Editor From The

In the arid deserts of Africa, where life seems impossible, a small, unassuming plant performs a remarkable feat. The resurrection plant, also known as Selaginella lepidophylla or the Rose of Jericho, appears to be nothing more than a withered ball of lifeless twigs. But when rain finally graces the parched land, this plant springs back to life, unfurling its fronds in a vivid display of green vitality.

The resurrection plant’s story mirrors the challenges we face in our own lives. Just as the plant endures long periods of drought, we too encounter seasons of difficulty—times when hope seems distant, and growth feels impossible. Yet, like the resurrection plant, we have the capacity to survive, adapt, and flourish once again. We are reminded that resilience is not about avoiding hardship, but about enduring it with the knowledge that better days will come. The plant’s revival after seemingly insurmountable odds serves as a powerful metaphor for our ability to bounce back from setbacks, and to reawaken our potential.

The plant doesn’t merely come back to life; it thrives, turning green and vibrant after being seemingly lifeless. In the same way, we have the ability to not just

endure challenges but to emerge from them stronger, more vibrant, and ready to embrace the opportunities that follow. As winter gives way to spring, we are reminded of the cyclical nature of life. Spring is a season of renewal, where new life bursts forth from the earth, echoing this Rose of Jericho’s revival. The buds on trees, the blooming flowers, and the fresh green leaves all symbolise the end of a dormant period and the beginning of growth and renewal. Like this remarkable plant, we possess an innate ability to endure hardship, adapt to change, and emerge stronger on the other side. Read about our real-life examples on our doorstep, such as Liz and Rob Garroch on page 11, and Daryl Williams on page 20.

As we move through the seasons of our lives, let us remember the lessons of the resurrection plant, drawing inspiration from its ability to flourish despite the most challenging conditions. And as spring brings new life and growth, may we embrace the promise of renewal, and the opportunity to thrive in the face of adversity.

Happy spring, Le Domaine family!

Yours in recreation,

From The Estate Manager

Hello Le Domaine family, spring has sprung, and it’s my favourite time of the year! Let’s welcome the season of renewal and growth with open arms! I am pleased to announce that earlier this year, I celebrated my 15th year of service with the Body Corporate of Le Domaine. My 15 years as your Estate Manager have not been without challenges, but it is truly an honour to serve this wonderful community. I am grateful for my good health and for each and every day that I can be of service to you all.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed the growth and development of our Estate, and it fills me with pride to see how far we’ve come together. Your support and cooperation have been invaluable, and I look forward to many more years of working alongside you to make our community even better. I share this 15-year milestone with the following loyal employees: Truman Mkhize, Ntombi Khumalo, Jacob Kokoana, Peter Dzuro, and Thomas Zulu.

Thank you, Le Domaine family, for having us, and a special thank you to these team members for their dedicated service to our community over so many years. Below is a photo of the six of us.

Generous donations keep pouring in for the SPCA and other animal organisations. These organisations express their heartfelt gratitude for your support and kindness as the contributions make a significant impact for the animals in need.

Smiths Event

The live entertainment provided by Smiths Property Group to celebrate Mother’s Day was a successful event. There was a short and informative presentation by Craig Brigg followed by our usual enticing dinner from Mode de Vie. We were then blown away by the most amazing Karaoke style repertoire of popular songs presented by the members of Smiths themselves, and a debut performance of ABBA songs by their young admin manager.

North vs South

The North vs South Annual Bowls Tournament and Burger Braai, sponsored by Warwick Wealth, was held on Father’s Day this year. The friendly competitive spirit was clear to see as Red vs Blue battled it out on all rinks.

Spring Day

Blossoms dance in the breeze, sunlight warms the waking trees, birds sing songs of life anew, springtime paints the world in hues. Hope and joy in every bloom, nature sheds its winter gloom. How lucky we are to live on this estate, where beauty and peace always await.

Know Your

Neighbours

Acouple who teaches us that fulfilment and happiness can flourish even in the face of tragedy. Childhood sweethearts who met when Liz was only 14-years-old and have been married for 56 years tell us of their two-year honeymoon around the world.

Bob worked as a radio tower engineer which required him to travel extensively around the world, Liz had the privilege of travelling with him for the first two years of their marriage, the two of them have explored places like the Persian Gulf, Australia,

New Zealand, Singapore, Russia, Greece, Sub-Saharan Africa, Persia, Turkey, and many more. They have three grown sons who live in South Africa, Cyprus, and Australia. Amidst Ron and Liz’s beautiful smiles as they proudly speak of their children and travels, lies a very tragic and harrowing story.

In 2002, Liz and her 16-yearold son were running a charity marathon, when a minibus taxi ploughed into Liz (three other runners were killed and several others injured). Paramedics had left Liz for dead, stating that she was beyond help, and decided to

focus on the other injured runners. Bob recalls how an off-duty doctor appeared as if out of nowhere and began to work on Liz, cutting her chest open right there on the roadside. While in hospital, the doctors had called Bob, and told him to come and say goodbye to her. Liz was in a coma for four weeks, had her left leg amputated, and had already been resuscitated three times. The doctors suggested amputating her right leg and both her arms, Bob simply refused. Together, Bob and Liz fought for her life and her recovery.

Two years in hospital, 36 operations later, and learning how to walk and talk all over again, Liz is here to tell the story with the most beautiful smile and wonderful attitude to life. Liz is the epitome of a positive attitude, not only did she have to relearn basic activities (she lost over 40 years of memory and development), but she also learned to draw, and what beautiful, joyful drawings she creates. You will see the cards in the library, given to residents, drawn with love by Liz. Beth Porter, our senior library volunteer, relates with such pride to how Liz’s drawings get better and better. Here are two delightful drawings of Liz’s. Namely Beth Porter and Mark Trollip whom Bob and Liz are especially fond of, as someone who always assists where he can. Bob has known Mark since he was about 18years-old.

Bob and Liz, we are privileged to have such graceful, beautiful, and determined residents living with us on the Estate. When I asked Liz what she loved most about life, she said, “just being alive.” And that surely is a reminder for all of us. Thank you for teaching us about resilience, determination, and love.

A joyful

spring walk

The Estate came alive on Friday 30 August 2024 as residents gathered for the much-anticipated Annual Spring Day Walk. This event, has become a staple in the Le Domaine calendar, bringing residents together to celebrate health, wellness, and community spirit.

The walk started and finished at the picturesque Wetlands deck,

with participants laughing and socialising eagerly together, even pets joined in the fun, creating a lively and light-hearted atmosphere. The walk was not just about “walking”, it was about fostering connections and enjoying the beauty of our Estate.

As the morning came to a close, there was a palpable sense of friendship and camaraderie among the residents.

In a world where it’s easy to feel disconnected, events like this remind us of the blessings of friendship and community. Whether you’re a seasoned estate walker or just looking for a fun morning outdoors, the spring walk has something for everyone.

Mark your calendars for Friday 5 September 2025 and join in the celebration of community spirit and healthy living!

Scavenger Hunt

The Le Domaine Scavenger Hunt was re-introduced after three years of dormancy to an enthusiastic response from our residents. The Estate was littered with collectables from a treasure chest in a Fairy Glen to a tank in a bed of stones and even lacy bows on a horse’s head! Residents meandered through our roadways and pathways following directions, answering questions and searching for the treasures hidden.

The afternoon culminated in refreshments at our wetlands at Club de Vie followed by prize giving. Thanks to our very generous sponsors, namely AdRenewables, Pam Golding Properties, Mode de Vie, Smiths Property Group, and Mr Anonymous the prizes and lucky draws were amazing.

Much fun was had by all and even those who presented a raw egg in their collectables bag were not disappointed.

Women’s Day Brunch

“I would like to thank the Body Corporate Le Domaine (BCLD) for a fabulous Women’s Day brunch. It was a fun morning and compliments to Malcolm and Fiona, Mode De Vie owners, and their team for the delicious food. You all did not hold back on the décor of the restaurant’s entrance, nor the tables and the fantastic buffet spread— the hot meal choices were absolutely delicious, and Norma produced a lovely floral display for the centre of the tables which proved quite a talking point!“

“Every detail done in excellence; entertainment, food, table décor, and above all—shared with friends and neighbours.”

“What a lovely idea and a real treat from the Body Corporate. We residents can be justly proud of Le Domaine! Everything was well organised with a lovely festive ambience, and we were thoroughly spoilt. Thank you all for blessing the ladies of our wonderful estate with a fantastic Women’s Day celebration!”

Dave Monks:

The Irishman and his story

Dave Monks' remarkable journey as an Irish performer and musician reached its pinnacle when he was invited to join The Miami Showband, a famous Irish pop group from Dublin renowned for numerous chart-topping hits. The band's widespread accolades and hits firmly positioned them among the 60s and 70s leading showbands. Nevertheless, Dave's decision to depart from The Miami Showband and pursue a fresh musical expedition that involved touring South Africa marked a profound turning point in his career.

Tragically, upon his arrival at Durban Airport on August 1,

1975, Dave was met with heartwrenching news delivered by Special Branch Policemen. He learned that three members of The Miami Showband had been brutally murdered in an ambush in their homeland just after bidding him farewell on July 31, 1975. The full documentary is currently on NETFLIX (ReMastered: The Miami Showband Massacre).

This deeply harrowing experience undeniably impacted Dave's musical odyssey, shaping the trajectory that propelled him to become the well-loved and celebrated Irish vocalist and multi-instrumentalist adored by audiences today. His resilience and unwavering commitment to his art

bear testament to the profound influence of his life experiences, and his performances continue to deeply resonate with audiences, infusing his music with a depth that transcends mere entertainment. Having embarked on a career that includes years of captivating live performances across South Africa and a multitude of other countries, including Ireland, England, South Korea, the USA, Portugal, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland, and Abu Dhabi, Dave Monks has rightfully earned his place as a distinguished figure in the South African music domain. His global escapades have only enriched his performances, rendering them even more unforgettable.

At Le Domaine, Dave has captured the hearts of audiences for over 17 years with an eclectic assortment of shows such as Irish Party Night, British Pub Night, Rock & Roll Evenings, New Year's Eve extravaganzas, Music Bingo, and Traditional Bingo. His recent Christmas in July event was a resounding triumph, further cementing his reputation as an exceptional entertainer.

Take advantage of the opportunity to partake in an evening with Dave Monks. Whether revisiting cherished classics or discovering new favourites, his performance guarantees a night infused with spirited revelry and musical brilliance, leaving you yearning for more.

Get to Know Your Birds

The African hoopoe is a monogamous bird that can be found alone or in pairs. They build their nests in cavities. The Hoopoe’s striking ‘crown’ or ‘crest’ of feathers, as well as their rich chestnut colouring contrasted by the black and white stripes on their wings and tail, makes them easily recognisable. When a hoopoe is startled or upset, they raise their crest. The bill of the Hoopoe is long, black, thin, and somewhat de-curved.

The Climb

An extraordinary woman’s journey.

Would you climb a mountain after having both knees and hips replaced? One extraordinary woman teaches us how nothing should stop you from achieving your goals. We spoke with Daryl Williams, mother of Le Domaine Care’s gem, Calem, and asked her how and why she climbed Kilimanjaro at the age of 57.

What led to your decision to climb kilimanjaro?

“I have lived with physical limitations since I was a child due to having one knock-knee and my hip sockets being shallower than normal. These contributed to the cartilage in my hips and knees wearing out and developing osteoarthritis, chronic discomfort, and joint inflammation at a

young age. I had my first hip replacement in 2005 at the age of 39, and had the second one replaced, along with both knees, between 2018 and 2022. These procedures increased my mobility and decreased the daily pain and inflammation. Despite these physical challenges, I have an adventurous spirit, love travelling, and will try most activities at least once—I have not bungee jumped or skydived yet, but maybe in the future! The desire to climb Kilimanjaro has been with me for many years but was far out of reach.

In February 2024, Illovo Sugar Africa partnered with the Imbumba Foundation in support of their Caring4Girls programme that addresses period poverty across South Africa by providing sanitary pads as well as menstrual hygiene education to indigent girls, and to sponsor a group of employees to take on the Trek4Mandela expedition up Mount Kilimanjaro. Employees from our businesses in eight African and two European countries were invited to apply, and I was one of the selected participants! As I gained a better understanding of period poverty

and its impact on school girls across our countries, I became more determined to prepare for the climb in July.

Preparing for the expedition:

I knew that the path to Mount Kilimanjaro would be a tough one for me. The muscles in my legs had never attempted anything like this before. I have always been more comfortable in water (regular Midmar Mile and Dolphin Mile swimmer) but needed a change. So, I started walking. I joined group hikes locally, cycled and worked out at the gym, and I walked on ALL the roads in our area on Sunday mornings; from Crestholme through the gorge to Kloof, along Inanda Road to Hillcrest, up the winding road from Inanda Dam to the Mall through Waterfall. The many hours of walking alone gave me time for personal reflection, prayer and strengthened my desire to make an impact in this area. I wanted the girls for whom I was taking on

“God-fi lled moments on that mountain will be remembered forever— the sunrise above the clouds, the majesty of the glaciers, the tiny fl owers growing under rocks in the alpine desert en route to base camp.”

this challenge to see that physical limitations do not need to hold us back from pursuing great challenges.

The climb:

Our group walked the Rongai Route up Mount Kilimanjaro: five days up and two days down. This is one of the tougher routes. We hiked between 7-15 km each day and camped at a different site each night. Without the assistance of our incredible support team, I don’t believe we would have made it! That was another huge lesson for me, I am often too self-reliant, and this climb showed me the power of leaning into the strength of others, of taking turns to be strong and resilient, and that it is okay to not be okay sometimes.

Lessons learned:

• Not giving in to how you feel— especially when you cannot see the end of the path, trusting your guide, and not stopping until you reach your goal.

• How important it is to keep showing up day after day.

• Do the work, the preparation, the boring or repetitive activities—it all makes you stronger.

• Do YOU! You do not have to have the same goals as everyone else, and no-one else has to believe in them either.

• You don’t do big things alone! My faith in God was strengthened enormously through this experience. Not because I made it, but knowing that family and friends were praying, and when I did not even have enough oxygen in my lungs to pray (at 5,800m + above sea level!), I leaned into their prayers. I knew God was with me, He had been with me through my preparation, and that He is still with me.

When relating her experience, Daryl quoted an African Proverb “If You Want to Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want to Go Far, Go Together”. Thank you, Daryl, for showing that we can go far if we are determined, have faith, and lean on others for help. Good luck with all your passion projects and community work in the future.

The Le Dom family is well aware of all the activities available to keep us healthy and active, in body and mind, and these are wonderful bonuses for living here.

But let’s not forget that someone once said, “ Fun is the secret ingredient of a happy life”. And this is where the abundance of entertainment comes into play. Take July as an example… there was a lively Greek Evening, with lots of plate smashing and cries of “Opa!”

Then we were treated to the musical talents and harmonies of local group B.A.M. who were a joy

to listen and dance to. Later, the inimitable Paul Spence and his team delighted us with music from the 60s-80s… from ballads to rock and everything in between.

A highlight of the month was the Christmas in July themed evening which was enjoyed by a full house! It was a triumph from the Christmas tree with dozens of gifts donated for the needy, the tasteful table décor and the amazing festive menu. All topped off with non stop entertainment by Dave Monks that had everyone singing along to well known favourites. A complete change of “culture” was provided one Sunday afternoon by a polished

performance by the Durban Symphonic Choir. Classics to music from the movies made up a very enjoyable programme.

As if these events weren’t enough to fill our social calendars, there were the monthly Quiz and Bingo evenings, rugby on the big screen, social evenings for the ballroom fanatics, Sokkie lovers, and DJ Brian’s special brand of “something for everyone”.

Thanks to Lydelle, Fiona, Malcolm, and their super teams for reminding us that “Variety is the Spice of Life”.

Care Le Domaine

Having said goodbye to 2023 and hello to 2024, I look forward to volunteering my time once again with our residents in the Care Centre.

Back in time when the older generation used to say, “how time flies as one gets older” I used to mutter under my breath, “there they go again”, not realising that in the years to come I would be

repeating the same lines. That is what goes through my mind as I have now reached that stage in my life. When I do my “HAPPY HOUR” or my “CHOCOLATE RUN”, especially the chocolate run which I normally do on an occasional Saturday morning at about 9:30 a.m. I have more time to chat with the individual residents and am always taken aback at the reaction I get from them. They seem to welcome me with such joy and

smiles. One resident asked me if it was my birthday on a Saturday morning while handing out chocolates. My reply was “No, I am actually trying to pave my way to Heaven.” Her reply to me was very touching, “Don’t worry, my dear, I will get there before you and keep you a seat.” Their lives have been so interesting with the stories I’ve heard. They often comment on the younger generation of today who have no idea what it’s like to ride a bike up and down the street or to kick a ball to one another in front of houses. They know nothing about coming home as the sun is setting to a dinner table set for the family or most importantly having manners and respect for their elders. ‘Hello’ and ‘goodbye’, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are words lost and forgotten.

I would imagine the average age must be around 80 and I am sure most of them remember some of their paths in life and look back and wonder if this world has become a better place. I am perfectly happy not being 30-years-old again or a child growing up with some 30-year-old parents. But that’s me and who I am. Just another human enjoying my days to the fullest. My last happy hour was during Christmas, 2023, and a couple of the Le Domaine residents came as well. They helped pour the wine and sherry, served the mince pies and chocolates, and

WORDS NOELLE MUNDY

were very impressed with the friendliness of the crowd. I have now done my “Easter Happy Hour” and how great it was to see most of the familiar faces. Easter eggs all around, drinks all around, and most importantly the smiles and greetings that melts my heart. My name is remembered by quite a few of the residents which is more than I can say for my memory. Mind you, they only have to remember one, I have to remember about 60. But never mind about that.

As long as I can chat and ask about their health, what more does one want? Showing interest in each

one of them makes them feel important; it shows them that I care. We come into this world knowing absolutely nothing. Our lives take us on an adventure that will either control us or let others control for us. Some of us become responsible human beings and others just plod through thinking the world owes them. Well, if that is the case then life can only surprise them with heartache and misery. Some become successful and others become miserable. Then we arrive in the so-called “waiting room”. We wait and with all the knowledge and experience that we have, we realise that we cannot really change or do much

with my little eye...

Taking care of your eyes is essential for maintaining good vision and overall health. Here are some tips to help you keep your eyes healthy:

1. Get Regular Eye Exams: Even if your eyes feel fine, regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial. Many eye diseases don't have noticeable symptoms, so early detection is essential.

2. Know Your Risk Factors: Factors like age, family history, and health conditions (such as diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure) can increase your risk of eye diseases. Be aware of this and take preventive measures.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Choices:

• Diet: Include dark, leafy greens such as spinach and kale), orange coloured fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots and omega-3-rich fish such as salmon in your diet.

• Physical Activity: Staying active helps reduce the risk

of health conditions that can affect your eyes.

• Quit Smoking: Smoking harms your eyes and increases the risk of conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts. Cigarette smoke has toxic effects on the retina.

4. Protect Your Eyes Daily:

• Wear Sunglasses: Even on cloudy days, protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

• Keep screen time to a minimal and take breaks from the computer.

• Ensure your room is well-lit when reading, sewing, and doing prolonged work.

• Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep your eyes moist and comfortable.

“Remember, healthy eyes contribute to a better quality of life”

Just how often should I get my eyes checked?

• It depends on your age, on your eyes condition, and family history.

• If you're younger than 40 years and have no eye problems, we might suggest you get routine tests every two years.

• If you're 40 years or older, you should get your eyes checked every year.

• If you've had eye trouble in the past, or if you're at risk for developing it (if someone in your family had it), you should see an eye doctor every year.

You need to check to see if you have serious, sometimes "silent" problems that can affect your vision, like:

• Glaucoma

• Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

• Cataracts

• Diabetic retinopathy
