Driving innovation in both classic and contemporary interior design, AMERICAN shutter’s product range includes a comprehensive selection of wooden and aluminium security shutters, and blinds. Shutters are panels, wooden or metal, that are fitted to the inside or outside of windows and doors. They offer multiple benefits: blocking out light, adding privacy, protecting windows from bad weather, controlling air flow, security and enhancing the look of a building.

As South Africa’s leading security shutter specialist with a proven track record in excellent customer service and reliability, there are many reasons why you should choose AMERICAN shutters for your next installation.

Reputation: Ask to see a portfolio of previous installations and customer references. AMERICAN shutters was established in 1985 as the first company to manufacture shutters in South Africa.

Since then, they have manufactured and installed shutters in thousands of homes across South Africa.

Competitive pricing: Cost matters, but not at the expense of quality. When comparing quotes, look critically at all aspects of the products quoted on. AMERICAN shutters have remained competitive in an ever-changing industry for more than three decades.

Product quality: Visit a showroom to view and operate the shutters and ask to see proof of any certifications, accreditations and ratings. Insist on seeing detailed technical specs on material, features and finishes to get a full picture. AMERICAN shutters have the widest range of shutter styles, finishes and features, and can manufacture most ranges to fit unusually-shaped openings.

Design advice: Value-add services such as interior design and product advice is critical to a successful installation. The

right advice results in the right choice. AMERICAN shutters have a wealth of experience and expertise, and use this to offer the best advice on the market.

Skilled artisans: A company’s reputation is built on the expertise and experience of its skilled staff, from sales to manufacture to installation. Look into how long a company has been in operation and the testimonials of previous customers.

AMERICAN shutters has a world-class manufacturing facility operated by technically skilled staff, and installation teams often complimented for their respectful behaviour and quality work.

Peace of mind: Carefully compare the guarantees and warranties offered to ascertain what is covered and for how long, paying attention to singled out or excluded components. AMERICAN shutters offer up to 15 years comprehensive warranty on their Security Shutter range and 7 years comprehensive warranty on their other shutter ranges.

Nestled along the breathtaking coastline, north of Tinley Manor, the upcoming Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari Resort is set to redefine luxury and innovation in South Africa. This first-of-itskind destination promises not only an exceptional all-inclusive experience but also advanced designs and technology that blends with the natural beauty of the Dolphin Coast seamlessly. In an exclusive Q&A, with Club Med South Africa's CEO, Olivier Perillat-Piratoine, we delve into the visionary elements behind this resort, from its eco-conscious architecture to the unique opportunities it offers for both guests and the local community.

Are there any cutting-edge technologies or innovations being integrated into the resort's design or operations that guests can look forward to?

The resort has been designed with a customercentric focus, featuring a variety of unique spaces and experiences. Its state-of-the-art

Our goal is to provide a holiday that is not only relaxing but also culturally enriching, offering something for everyone, from families to adventure seekers and nature lovers

architecture maximises views while using superior building materials that blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the site. The vibrant design mixes local and international influences thanks to a partnership between French architects, Studio MHNA and South African architects, Craft of Architecture. Each space and room category features a distinctive identity, with a keen attention to detail throughout the resort.

As a first for South Africa, the resort offers a premium allinclusive experience, including childcare for children as young as four-months-old. The international staff, known as Gentle Organizers (GOs), hail from around the world and embody the Club Med spirit, with a team of 500 representing diverse backgrounds and nationalities. There are 66 suites from the Club Med Exclusive Collection

which will soon be available for purchase, offering a unique ownership model that combines the benefits of Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari's all-inclusive experience with ownership perks.

With the north coast boasting the best climate and no jet lag for European visitors, how do you plan to leverage these advantages to attract international tourists?

The site, north of Ballito is perfectly is uniquely positioned to appeal to international tourists, particularly from Europe, where the minimal time difference means no jet lag, allowing visitors to fully enjoy their holiday from the moment they arrive. Leveraging the region’s unbeatable climate, we are offering a world-class combination of beach and safari experiences, a "dream" duo that only a few destinations can

match. The resort will feature South Africa’s first Club Med surf school, giving visitors an exclusive opportunity to engage in this thrilling sport in a pristine environment. Beyond surfing, our guests will have access to a wide range of immersive experiences that showcase the unique beauty of the area, such as whale and dolphin watching, hiking, and biking trails that explore the stunning coastal views.

Added to this, the location allows easy access to some of the country's most iconic cultural and leisure destinations, enhancing its appeal to international tourists seeking an authentic South African adventure. Our goal is to provide a holiday that is not only relaxing but also culturally enriching, offering something for everyone, from families to adventure seekers and nature lovers.

The Dolphin Coast is known for its rich biodiversity. How is the resort contributing to the conservation of local flora and fauna, and are there any partnerships with environmental organisations to support these efforts?

Environmental respect is at the core of Club Med's resort development in South Africa, aligning with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Key measures include noise prevention strategies to minimise disruptions to local wildlife, the use of eco-friendly materials in the resort's construction, and a strong emphasis on acoustic and thermal comfort. We have designed the resort’s layout to be in harmony with the surrounding environment, protecting key areas of biodiversity, large trees, and green spaces. Water usage will be managed efficiently, with an on-site water treatment plant, and energysaving lighting will be employed to minimise the impact on local fauna.

In terms of construction, we are committed to using sustainable materials and implementing effective waste management systems to reduce our environmental footprint. Once operational, the resort will adhere

to strict waste sorting and recycling processes, further reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.

To ensure that our efforts meet international standards, the resort will be Green Star certified for ecobuilding and Green Globe certified for the ongoing operation of the resort. Our partnership with Solid Green Consulting ensures that both the design and construction of the resort adhere to these high environmental standards. Club Med also upholds internal policies, such as our 'Bye Bye Plastic' initiative, which aims to eliminate single-use plastics from our resorts.

Through these efforts, Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari is dedicated to not only offering a luxurious experience for guests but also ensuring that the local ecosystem is protected for future generations.

Beyond job creation, how do you plan to ensure that the local communities benefit from the resort in the long term? Are there specific programmes or initiatives aimed at community development and upliftment?

We are dedicated to supporting local communities through several initiatives. Our focus includes sourcing products and services from local partners and farmers, creating significant job opportunities with an emphasis on hiring from the local community. We also offer development programmes that promote internal growth and international mobility for staff members.

Looking ahead, what legacy do you hope the Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari will leave in the region, and how do you see the resort evolving over the next decade to continue attracting visitors and benefitting the local area?

Our goal is to leave a legacy of successful collaboration between an international player and local partners, boosting the attractiveness of the North Coast, KwaZulu-Natal, and South Africa as a whole. We envision the resort continuing to draw international visitors while positively impacting the local economy and contributing to the region's long-term growth and development.

Inside

As we look toward 2025, design experts from Inside Out Home Boutique predict a bold shift in home aesthetics. Gone are the days of minimalistic neutrals and plain, open spaces. The future of home design leans towards rounded shapes, rich textures, and creative play with hues to create a well-balanced, visually stimulating space. Here's how you can incorporate these emerging trends into your home, with tips and tricks on accessorising for a fresh, modern look.

One of the standout trends for 2025 is the move towards softer shapes in home structures. Arches, curved doorways, and rounded windows create a sense of sophistication, while also adding a timeless architectural element. Whether you're renovating or designing a new space, consider incorporating spherical shaped edges and silhouettes to your doorways, cabinetry, or even ceiling details to soften the overall feel of your interior, giving your space an elegant and cohesive flow.

Forget florals - 2025 is all about geometric prints and heavy textures. From upholstery to feature walls, geometric patterns can transform a room into a statement. These bold designs give structure to your space, creating an artistic and engaging look that moves away from the delicate, floral patterns of past seasons. Don’t be afraid to mix materials and layer

textures; consider textured wall coverings, heavy woven throws, or even chunky rugs underfoot.

Colours are taking a turn toward the warmer spectrum in 2025. Burnt orange, mustard yellow, terracotta, and soft gold, all blending to create a pleasant and comfortable space. Balance these hues by playing with a mix of light and dark shades to give the room depth. Inside Out Home Boutique advises using colour not just on walls but also in your choice of furniture, cabinetry, and even wooden accents. As wood tones also shift to richer, mellow hues or even playful, colourful finishes, neutral tones will step back, allowing bold colours to set the tone.

While open-plan living has been a popular trend for years, 2025 sees a shift toward creating more distinct spaces within the home. Think of it as zoning - each area of the home should have its own identity and function, while still maintaining cohesion. To achieve this, use furniture placement, rugs, and even partial walls or screens to create clear but harmonious divisions.

Accessorising your home in 2025 means getting creative and, yes, a little adventurous. Inside Out Home Boutique encourages playing with different heights when decorating shelves, tables, or consoles. Layer taller pieces like vases or sculptures with shorter, complementary items to

with the local team from Inside Out Home Boutique info@insideouthb.co.za

create visual interest. Symmetry also takes centre stage - use duplicate accessories, like matching vases or identical candles, to create balance in your décor. But perhaps the most significant tip for accessorising your home? Start with one piece you absolutely love. Whether it's a bold sculpture, a unique piece of artwork, or a beautiful indoor plant, allow this item to anchor the room and build the rest of your space around it.

Speaking of plants, greenery will continue to thrive in 2025. Bringing the outdoors in through large, leafy plants adds not only natural beauty but also a sense of tranquillity. Place plants in oversized planters, hanging baskets, or even integrate greenery into the structure of your home for a fresh and organic touch. One of the easiest ways to embrace new trends is through maximising natural light. Big windows and open skylights invite the outdoors into your home, making your space feel brighter and more expansive. Large panes of glass paired with airy curtains in warm tones will blend seamlessly with the bolder, balmy colours and textures of 2025.

With these tips from Inside Out Home Boutique, you’ll not only stay ahead of 2025’s biggest design trends but also create a home that reflects your unique style while feeling fresh, balanced, and warm.

Crafting Nature’s Story

Redefining Home Décor with Josh’s Creations

For those looking to add a unique, nature-inspired touch to their homes, Josh’s Wood Designs offers a wide range of custom-made wood products that bring both functionality and beauty into any space. Founder Josh’s love for woodworking began as a child growing up on a farm in Durban, and this early connection with nature has evolved into a flourishing business that creates bespoke, one-of-a-

kind wood pieces. "I was always fascinated by the trees around our farm," Josh recalls. “I spent hours playing in their branches, building forts and treehouses. As I grew older, I became captivated by their bark, the age of the trees, and the endless possibilities of what I could create from their wood." This passion for nature’s raw beauty is evident in the stunning pieces that now come out of Josh’s workshop.

Josh’s father, Mike, plays a significant role in the process, lending his expertise as a toolmaker and millwright to create custom metal bases and legs for many of the tables; and his mother, Carol, is responsible for adding a creative twist to the designs, specialising in resin art that complements his woodwork. Together, they make a dynamic team that produces items ranging from elegant resin river tables to intricately designed charcuterie boards.

Among Josh’s most popular and personal favourite pieces are his live edge wood tables. These large, organic slabs are carefully shaped to maintain the natural edge of the tree, making each one a unique masterpiece. "These massive pieces, sliced from trees that have fallen due to storms or lightning, are like nature’s own artwork."

One of the standout elements of Josh’s Wood Designs is the craftsmanship that goes into each creation. Josh blends his love for nature with innovative techniques to produce pieces that are not only practical but also works of art. Everything he makes has its own story and character. “I believe that doing something you love, that enhances someone’s space, isn’t work at all. It’s passion.”

Wood is more than just a material to Josh - it’s a medium through which nature continues to live and breathe. The type

of wood used is crucial to the durability and aesthetic of each design, particularly when dealing with different environments. Josh favours locally sourced wood, such as monkey thorn, plain tree, cedar, and cypress, but also works with more exotic types for special projects. Wood is susceptible to climate. Coastal wood reacts differently to humidity and moisture compared to inland wood, which faces dryness and cold. Some hardwoods may shift, leading to cracks.

Elevate your home décor with a touch of nature, Josh’s Wood Designs offers pieces that go beyond traditional furniture. Each item is handcrafted with love, attention to detail, and a deep respect for nature. Whether it’s a live edge table, a custom-made décor piece, or a resin-enhanced charcuterie board, Josh’s work turns wood into lasting, functional art that’s sure to be the centrepiece of any room.

This year marks a significant milestone for R&B Civils as the company proudly celebrates their 15th anniversary. From modest beginnings to managing multimillion-rand projects, R&B Civils is emerging as a leader in the civil engineering industry on the North Coast. When asked about the secret to this success, CEO Adheer Basudev offers a lighthearted yet poignant answer: "What some may call insanity, we call tenacity."

That tenacity, combined with an unwavering commitment to quality and excellence, has been the driving force behind R&B Civils’ enduring growth. Reflecting on the past 15 years, Adheer shared insights into the key factors behind the company's success, the obstacles they've overcome, and their vision for the future.

The 2020 lockdown was a particularly difficult time for the company. "It was a watershed moment for everyone," Adheer recalls, “Despite the financial strain, R&B Civils made the decision to support its staff, focusing on a post-lockdown recovery strategy that would ensure the company stayed afloat. "Our strong team spirit, loyal staff, and determination helped us recover. We zeroed in on getting our projects and finances back on track." Just as the company was regaining momentum, the April 2022 floods delivered another significant blow,

this time to their largest infrastructure project at Seaton. "Everything we had worked for was washed away," Adheer shared. But instead of accepting defeat, the R&B Civils team rose to the challenge, working around the clock to rebuild what had been lost. "What looked like a catastrophe became one of our proudest moments," he reflects. Remarkably, despite losing three months of work, the project was completed just one month past the original deadline, with no compromise on quality - a testament to the team’s resilience and determination.

“Resilience is a word that is used too causally, but Seaton showed us what it truly means. When our team delivered despite unprecedented disasters and financial setbacks, we realized we could push through anything and come out on the other side with a win. This is what will continue to drive us forward.”

Adheer is eager to steer the company toward continued growth and build on its diverse portfolio of large-scale infrastructure projects, such as Seaton, Club Med, and Coral Cove. R&B Civils' legacy of perseverance and exceptional project delivery uniquely positions the company for this exciting new chapter.

Climate-Responsive Design Trends

Resident expert architects, Julia Rutherfoord and Llewellyn Cronje talk about the design trends and standards they notice and incorporate into the homes being built in the area.

WORDS Cristina Govender

Looking at some of the beautiful and intricate houses which are popping up in the area, one has to wonder if there are some driving forces behind how these houses are being designed. Living by the coast, we have to consider the materials we use and the design to optimise ventilation, sun exposure and access to the surrounding views.

Julia Rutherfoord of Julia Rutherfoord Architect reports a strong push towards using sustainable and eco-friendly materials on the North Coast. There's a big move toward "off-the-grid" options like solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems. People are choosing local materials, which helps support our local economy and reduces pollution. This change is driven by a greater awareness of climate change and a desire to build a more sustainable and community-focused economy.

These are important changes and evolving trends, especially on the North Coast. They enable us to live more comfortably in our beautiful tropical climate while also benefitting our well-being and caring for the environment. By considering things like the orientation to the sun, direction of the wind and rain when designing a home, it can reduce energy use and save money over time.

Choosing natural, non-toxic materials for homes is just as important as eating well and exercising - it’s good for our physical and mental health. Living in homes that connect us to nature can make us feel calmer, happier, and healthier.

Looking at next year, Julia expects to see a focus on the luxury sustainability concept. Which means designing beautiful, high-end homes that also promote eco-friendly living. Other trends she outlines to watch for are:

The benefits of small houses are also becoming more apparent. Affordability, compact uncomplicated living, decluttering, more efficient use of land, less infrastructural cost, and the space for modular units as an answer to the housing crisis, all come to mind

Llewellyn Cronje of CA Architects gives us a general definition of what a trend is as “the general direction in which something is developing or changing”. One such observed trend is designing homes with a biophilic direction. This describes the connection between habitable spaces and the spatial experience with nature. Centred on wellness, wellbeing and mindfulness, while maintaining a relationship with the natural surroundings, biophilic design is trending in architecture this year.

Adaptive re-use is a strong architectural trend of repurposing existing structures. By using this environmentally conscious approach, architects are repurposing buildings instead of demolishing. Abandoned factories, warehouses, churches, and derelict complexes are being transformed into vibrant

public and private residential and shared work precincts. There is also a move towards sustainable design that is an established necessity. Buildings are accommodating renewable energy sources and sustainable materials and construction techniques reducing waste and carbon emissions. When it comes to aesthetic trends specifically on the North Coast, the traditional Natal veranda farmhouse and its application in the tropical zone is evolving into a contemporary interpretation.

With the needs of our society changing, we are seeing more buildings that respond to the varied and unique individual requirements of our “diverse and vibrant society”. Designs are emerging that will celebrate and respect the cultural heritage and diversity of communities.

Then, we have modular construction. This involves the pre-fabrication of off-site modules for assembly on-site. This trend has shown to save time and money, and improves quality control and allows for easy expansion and reconfiguration. The use of sophisticated software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) will continue to aid the architectural design process and production. AI will serve to supplement but not replace intellectual human input.

There is more awareness of the needs of the handicapped and the value of an economically participating disabled population is prevalent when designing homes and public buildings. The benefits of small houses are also becoming more apparent. Affordability, compact uncomplicated living, decluttering, more efficient use of land, less infrastructural cost, and the space for modular units as an answer to the housing crisis, all come to mind.

When it comes to trend forecasting, “We don’t have a crystal ball, but CA Architects are committed to awareness of the changing and meaningful needs of the KZN North Coast community,” Llewellyn reports.

Meet Bayanda Cele, a local bodybuilder who uses his passion to help others reach their health goals.

Bayanda’s journey into the world of bodybuilding wasn’t one of instant recognition or overnight success. Like many, he began with a dream - a desire to stand among the names that people would instantly associate with greatness in the sport. "I started bodybuilding many years ago," he reflects. "Starting off, we always have that dream of at least being in the pack of being known and named when anyone talks about your discipline."

Competing in numerous events over the years, Bayanda experienced both triumphs and setbacks. His early days were marked by the voices of supporters who saw his potential long before he did. "I was always told that I have the potential to be someone and do something, yet I never really saw it right away," he admits. However, everything changed when he was given the opportunity to compete on the world stage, surrounded by elite athletes and top-tier coaches. "Having international athletes and coaches admire my physique was the most eye-opening realisation that I had potential, and it motivated me to work more fiercely at my dream."

Bayanda’s approach to mental preparation, especially when competing on a global level, is what sets him apart. "Mental preparation for the world stage, surprisingly, was the easiest because here there is no pressure - nobody

knows you," he shares. He didn’t feel the need to prove anyone wrong; instead, his mission was to validate the beliefs of those who supported him. "I was there to prove them right."

But beyond his success as a competitor, Bayanda’s greatest passion lies in his role as a coach. He believes that true transformation starts in the mind. "As much as I am a coach that transforms bodies, I like to think of myself

WORDS Kai Coates
If I can transform your mind, I can transform your body. Your physical outcome is the fruit or the byproduct of your state of mind

as a coach that transforms minds," he says. For Bayanda, the physical outcome is just a reflection of a person’s mental and emotional state. "If I can transform your mind, I can transform your body. Your physical outcome is the fruit or the byproduct of your state of mind."

Through his coaching, Bayanda has witnessed the profound changes that take place when people begin to take care of their health. He considers it the most rewarding aspect of his work: "The best reward as a coach has been to hear people talk, walk, and act differently after taking care of their bodies and health." When it comes to nutrition and performance, Bayanda is quick to dispel common misconceptions. "It’s no secret that to get in shape, you need to eat right. But the biggest misconception is that you need to starve. You can’t starve and gym because you won’t have enough energy for your set." He also emphasises the importance of having a healthy relationship with food: "If you hate the eating you are doing, you’re not going to last long doing it."

Bayanda’s advice to aspiring bodybuilders who may be struggling is simple but powerful: "Time is the keyword. Everything takes time, and everything comes together at the right time. Especially in the world of bodybuilding, you need to understand that this is a marathon, not a sprint."

At the core of Bayanda’s philosophy is his unwavering faith. His personal mantra? "Put God first. When you put Him first, you will undoubtedly succeed."

Bayanda’s story is a testament to perseverance, belief, and the power of mindset. His journey from an aspiring athlete to a world-class competitor and transformative coach is proof that with the right attitude, time, and faith, anything is possible.

WITNESS THE OCEAN'S GREAT RETURN

Between October and March, the secluded beaches of Maputaland become the stage for an ancient, awe-inspiring ritual. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles, after decades of journeying the vast oceans, return to the very shores where they were born to nest. These endangered giants dig deep into the sand to lay their eggs—a mesmerising and emotional process that offers an extraordinary connection to nature.

Maputaland, stretching between St Lucia and Ponta do Ouro, is a haven for these rare turtles, and their nesting beaches are protected within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Witnessing this migration is a rare privilege, and visitors can experience it first-hand through guided tours led by expert conservationists who have dedicated their lives to studying and protecting these ancient creatures.

The turtle nesting season is best experienced from the Big Skies collection of intimate camps, perfectly positioned within the iSimangaliso buffer zone. These serene retreats combine the untamed beauty of the wilderness with the comforts of modern living, offering an unparalleled experience for nature lovers and those curious to visit this unique phenomenon.

FASCINATING TURTLE FACTS

• They've survived millions of years relatively unchanged - they predate the dinosaurs and have crossed the oceans for 100 million years.

• They're engineered for the sea; leatherbacks can withstand pressure at depths of 1.2 kilometres.

• Both loggerheads and leatherbacks will return to the same exact spot where they hatched decades earlier to lay their eggs.

There’s something so magical about walking into a venue and seeing all of the different activations and grand stages, hearing the music and feeling the buzz in the air. Seeing everyone so happy to be there and sharing the same excitement makes it feel like you’re part of something bigger, something unforgettable. You’ve got to wonder about what it takes to put these spectacular events and festivals together.

Founded in 2010, Extreme Events is a family-owned business and has steadily grown into one of South Africa’s top event infrastructure specialists. Working toward being the first choice when it comes to event planning, coordination and infrastructure, they pride themselves on providing a service that is affordable, reliable, efficient and innovative. Their hands-on dedicated team takes an involved approach to

take care of every detail, down to the smallest components and consistently strives to exceed expectations and safety standards, with an impressive success record. Planning events sometimes requires long amounts of time and effort, especially ones as big as ZAFest, which was a huge hit earlier this year. “An event of this size and magnitude requires months of planning, in this case specifically, we almost start shortly after the last event ended while things are still fresh in our minds and we can execute on things we think did or didn’t work for the current event,” they reflect.

Deciding where would be the best place to allocate the many factors involved in the event takes careful consideration. You have to create a flow of a sort, which starts even outside the venue and the parking lot. Attendees should be able to walk through and navigate the grounds easily to find what attraction they are

most interested in. “The customer experience starts from the time they arrive on-site, before they have even parked their car,” they explain. “The flow of traffic into the event, the experience of parking your vehicle, and the access into the show area and ticketing office, sufficient signage and lighting if guests will be leaving after dark – all of this makes an impact before they have even gone through the gate into the event.” Working with local and national service providers and enforcers, they ensure that traffic control, safety and security is always present and efficient. Each event is a team effort, and everyone does their part to make it a success.

communication is key to make sure everything functions without a hitch and nothing is missed, “At every event, we have a back office full of people ensuring the event runs smoothly at all times – this engine room is never seen by the event guests, but it is a critical part to any event!”

When you have a large crowd of people, there are always health, safety and security precautions to take. Extreme Events believe that the safety of the guests are paramount, whether it’s the weather, security checks or structural integrity. “We work with an engineer who ensures all of our structures are compliant when installed, and we have a full time maintenance team who ensure that all of our equipment is maintained to a very high standard.” They don’t compromise on any part of a production.

“We work with an engineer who ensures all of our structures are compliant when installed, and we have a full time maintenance team who ensure that all of our equipment is maintained to a very high standard.”

we have made allowances for every possible eventuality and that our guests are safe when attending our event.”

With so many moving parts, the logistics behind them need to be precise and well-timed since gates will have to open on time, “Absolutely everything we do is planned according to what needs to be delivered and installed with timelines for each structure,” they elaborate. “We have an amazing team working tirelessly behind the scenes to deliver on our client's vision, ensuring it's done safely and on time.” Of course, with multiple processes and components, @extremeevents_za

They also have a designated Health and Safety plan and are enforced, working with IGS Security, SAPS and the fire departments, nothing is left to chance. “Months in advance, we consult with SAPS, Fire, Disaster Management, Traffic Management, Liquors Authorities, and IPSS Medical to ensure that

After being in the business for over a decade, Extreme Events have racked up an impressive track record, and have met performers, artists and world leaders, but their highlight lies in a slightly different sector of infrastructure, “Probably one of our greatest achievements though, were the two COVID hospitals we built during the pandemic,” they recall. “In 10 weeks we built two 120 bed medical facilities for patients and this was a standout achievement for us and the entire team.”

Amphitheatre, children’s play areas and The Barn, will house an eclectic selection of artisanal homeware, art, beauty, fashion, food and beverage outlets, alongside quality restaurants and niche concept eateries. Positioned as the spatial heart of Westown, it provides a permanent niche space for local traders and reflects the high-street design approach that makes Westown unique.

Westown’s mixed-use development is perfectly situated and will become a perfect destination for businesses and residents!

Westown is the new City of the West-a brandnew destination in the making. One that connects people with spaces and experiences, bringing new opportunities to live, work and thrive. A mixed-use property and lifestyle development perfectly positioned off the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, Westown is an active construction site, with the first phase of the development, the retail hub of Westown Square, planned for opening on 27th March 2025.

Westown is designed around the highstreet retail experience of Westown Square which is supported by several interconnected precincts, spaces, and experiences that together form the 100ha Westown Urban Core. Planned as a managed urban environment, Westown will not only integrate with existing outdoor and lifestyle activities and facilities in the area, but enhance them

with the rehabilitation of the sugar cane into an active, indigenous green belt.

The development of Westown broke ground in October 2022. Since then, nearly 75% of phase 1, including Westown Square and the surrounding road upgrades have been completed. The project now enters a critical stage, focusing on the extensive landscaping and construction of parking areas.

Designed by MDS Architecture in a joint venture with Boogertman + Partners KZN, Westown Square will ‘prioritise the movement of people, social spaces and lifestyle as part of the shopping experience. There’s a strong focus on open spaces, with densely planted walkways, pergola-covered seating, large trees and planter boxes, celebrating the outdoors and setting the tone for Westown as a whole. Key features of Westown Square include the Town Centre and Gardens, the

Westown’s position on the N3 is a strategic logistics advantage. The N3, known as the SIP 2, is a logistics and industrial corridor between Durban, Free State and Gauteng that offers investment and development opportunities in easily accessible nodes along it. Keystone and Cato Ridge are two such developing nodes, leaving Shongweni (and Westown) as the next logical, and closest, new development node to the Durban Port. Westown promises opportunities beyond and in support of the logistics landscape, including for new residents, businesses, shops, and recreational activities.

To cater for the 3,000 new residential units being built and occupied in the Westown urban core over the next 5-8 years, Westown Square, The Barn, Shongweni Eco Park, Farrier Business Park, The West Private Hospital and the infrastructure upgrades and provisions in and around Westown, pave the way for the next precincts within the New City of the West.

Huizemark, a proudly South African real estate brand, has been a symbol of honesty, vibrancy, and professionalism since its establishment in 1962. With a national footprint and a strong commitment to simplicity and collaboration, Huizemark’s approach has allowed it to thrive in the competitive real estate market. This success story extended to KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast when the franchise opened its doors just two weeks before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

What started as a simple idea - to do real estate better and become their own bosses - quickly evolved into a mission of hard work, determination, and innovation. While many might enjoy the initial excitement of setting up a new venture, the team at Huizemark knew the true test would be in their ability to execute that vision with
