NOTE EDITOR'S
recently had the pleasure of attending the official opening of Mike's Texas BBQ spot, Salt Slab, where my family and I indulged in the much-anticipated smoked brisket, ribs, and pulled pork, accompanied by traditional Texas sides. What a fantastic experience! (You can find a more detailed review by Lorinda on page 54.) What truly stood out was the incredible community support for Mike and his team.
The Midlands is known for its strong sense of community, but witnessing it first-hand was a heartwarming reminder of what makes this place so special. If you’re curious about Salt Slab, I encourage you to read the full review and then pay them a visit this weekend. Was it good? Let’s just say we went back the following weekend… but we’ll let you be the judge.
Our visit to Salt Slab also reminded me of the spirit of innovation, creativity, and courage that thrives here in the Midlands. Unlike town or city living, our businesses are spread out, and getting around often means navigating bumpy and dusty roads. It takes real grit and determination to launch new ventures or keep existing businesses running, yet, I am constantly impressed and inspired by the resilience of our local entrepreneurs. We never run out of great stories to share about these amazing entrepreneurs in the Midlands, which only reinforces my point, don’t you think? Speaking of people and places, I have a few personal highlights in this edition that
I’m excited to share with you. Your Ideal Community Awaits offers a glimpse into the future developments in our area, painting an exciting picture of what lies ahead for the Midlands. Tell Us “Moo”re features an insightful interview with James Kelly, the KZN chairman of the Angus Breeders Society, where he shares his passion for the Angus breed, sustainability practises, and future opportunities. I also thoroughly enjoyed the feature on The Bates Family and their enduring legacy at Fordoun. There are loads more packed into the magazine and I'm sure you'll enjoy it all!
Lastly, I can’t help but share how many times I smiled while reading through this edition. This edition really stood out because of the sheer number of dogs, cows, and horses gracing its pages—it might be a record number for the magazine. I love it! There’s something profound about a community living so closely with nature, as we do here in the Midlands. I’m grateful that the team and I get to share these stories about this wonderful place. Until the next edition, God Bless. Warm regards,

FENESTRA WHY with invest
A Once In A Lifetime Investment Opportunity
Ateam comprising of experienced and dedicated professionals with a passion for the stock market, Fenestra Asset Management’s investment philosophy considers both the growth and value styles of investing.
Fenestra structures and manages specialist share portfolios both locally and offshore. Their competitive fee structure also enhances client returns. Fenestra charges a fee that’s a percentage of assets under management, and that’s it.
The generation AI market size was estimated at US $13 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound rate (CAGR) of 36.5% from 2024 to 2030. AI companies are growing rapidly, several at over 100 per cent annually and there is a huge appetite for these stocks from investors. This is a very disruptive technology with so many opportunities.
It’s a game changer, offering investors a rare chance to capitalise on transformative technology and opportunities abound in the established AI giants, AI-centric ETFs, and innovative startups. Cloud computing giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are major players in AI and investing in cloud platforms is mission critical and many companies will benefit.
What exactly is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions. The goal for AI is to be able to do things such as recognise patterns, make decisions, and judge like humans.
What does it do?
It reduces human error, increases efficiency, performs advanced data analysis, makes new inventions, personalises your files, and organises workflow and much more.
Where to invest?
Nvidia (a key innovator of computer graphics and AI technology in California. Their invention of the GPU in 1999 sparked the growth of the PC gaming market, redefined computer graphics, and ignited the era of modern AI), which is up to 230% in the past year. Fenestra has identified other companies like SMCI (Super Micro Computer Inc) and ARM Holdings on the periphery and mainstream AI that are all set to profit from this trend.
The Mission
Fenestra strives to be a great South African and international specialist investment group. They are driven by a passion for outstanding performance and an unwavering commitment to their philosophies and core values.
Imagine a porcupine with its quills. When relaxed, the porcupine looks smooth and cute; but when under threat, the porcupine will extend their quills in a protective suit of armour and shoot them out in defence. Anxiety is like your quills. You can’t see it physically but it is your armour against anything that threatens to harm you. To see anxiety as an ally is to understand what vulnerability the anxiety is protecting.
This vulnerability could be about imbalance, drained energy, trauma, safety or health. Anxiety runs through the nervous system and the signals move at lightning speed. It is like a sixth sense and will pick up threats, danger from relationships, our environment, and toxicity faster than our mind can. It can scatter your thinking and make you feel overwhelmed like you have to rush and get things done— despite how exhausted you feel. The anxiety is, however, activated and tasked to protect you. The negative implications come from us not being able to switch it off and ground ourselves. The best way to tackle anxiety is to understand it and slow everything down.
Here are three suggestions to help you: 1. Get into the present Mindfulness is a powerful tool. Whether it is meditation, creativity, practices like yoga and breath work or whether you are using affirmations, mantras or visualisations—the goal is to suspend uncontrolled thought and tune into yourself and what is going on for you right now.
2. Heal and attend to your nervous system
We need to do things to soothe and calm ourselves. Relax in an Epsom salt bath, embrace nature, go for a massage, listen to music, take gentle walks, get creative, clean and declutter, journal, sleep, meditate, get therapy, stretch, or breathe deeply.
3. Actively create safety and space
We need to create a space where we can be alone, reduce outside stimulation, and tune into our thoughts and emotions in our own ways.
Anxiety has kept you safe more than you may realise. When we work with our anxiety, we stop fighting against ourselves, and we look after ourselves more. The more self-protective and self-loving we become, the less work anxiety has to do to keep us safe.
What if we changed the way we view anxiety? Instead of seeing it as an affliction or disorder, we start looking at it like a protective best friend

Family Bates The
We look at the close-knit family members behind one of our most luxurious local hotels and how they serve their community and each other with passion and heartfelt commitment.
For any Midlands locals, even those who visit from far away, you’ll probably be familiar with Fordoun Hotel and Spa in Nottingham Road. It’s one of the cosiest, most picturesque places in our countryside, and did you know the Fordoun farm itself is nearly 200 years old?
It was named after a village and parish in Kincardineshire, Scotland and registered by
one of the Byrne Settlers, William Taylor, in the early 1850s as a land allotment.
The farm has been home to several families over the years, and most recently to Jon and Micheline Bates; their two sons, Richard and Andrew; and daughter, Georgina. We caught up with them to hear more about how they found their home in Fordoun, their respective roles with a focus on the Bates men, and their vision moving forward.
The farm was purchased in 1949 by industrialist Sir George Usher and his wife Lady Nora who moved from England and found the Midlands countryside a perfect climate to make their home and develop their dairy farm. Lady Usher didn’t have children of her own and had a close relationship with Jon; she was his aunt, who eventually took over Fordoun at her request in 1990. After she passed on in 1993, the Bates inherited the farm.
WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS
Jon successfully ran the dairy farm for years, however, he faced a similar challenge to many smaller farmers and that was the inability to increase cattle numbers due to not having enough irrigable water on the property. This prompted him to sell off a large hectare of the farm and use the funds to create a viable hospitality business on the now smaller farm. Jon engaged renowned architect Nick Grice and converted 1848 stone buildings, the homestead, barn, and stables into the stunning rooms they are today. Combining modern with historical aspects, Fordoun Hotel and Spa has, since opening in 2005, received numerous international and local hospitality awards.
Over the years, the Bates children joined their parents in managing the farm and hotel. Micheline mainly oversaw the interior aspects of Fordoun, which Georgina took over from her. Georgina is also a talented artist; her paintings can be spotted adorning the Fordoun walls. While Jon is not involved in the operational aspects of running Fordoun, he is involved with social and environmental projects, sustainability, and biodiversity initiatives such as the Bill Barnes Crane and Oribi Nature Reserve, and organic beef, sheep, vegetables, chickens and bees. He also oversees the maintenance of some of the 30 kilometres hiking paths.
Younger son Andrew joined around 10 years ago after he left his banking career in the UK and moved back to South Africa to provide a better life for his family, and to be closer to his parents and siblings. He manages the overall estate and the maintenance of the buildings, plants, and grounds. His portfolio includes capital projects such as solar and new additions and buildings. Before Andrew joined his father, his brother, Richard, had played professional rugby in Japan and the UK for over seven years. He gained valuable hospitality training at Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa in Cape Town before joining Fordoun as the General Manager.
PHOTO ANTOINETTE MCDONALD
While the Bates brothers mainly hold up the Fordoun fort, they always strive to maintain a work-life balance with one another. They shared with us how they manage the dynamics that come with family business, “We set clear boundaries between work and family time, ensuring that we dedicate moments to relax and enjoy each others’ company without discussing business. Having separate living spaces and taking regular breaks also helps us to recharge and avoid burnout.”
The successes and challenges unite the Bates men, especially when navigating their father-son relationships. They understand
"Our legacy is rooted in sustainability, community engagement, and exceptional hospitality."
each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which allows them to complement each other effectively. “We truly get to know one another and our ability to work through difficulties. These moments test our resilience and commitment to the business and each other, ultimately strengthening our relationship and the operation of Fordoun,” explained Richard.
Running a family business is no easy feat, it comes with its ups and downs, especially when there are differences of opinion, but the shared passion, values, and commitment to Fordoun is the glue that keeps the Bates family so close-knit.
This includes the staff members, who feel like extended family. Their collective focus also motivates everyone to maintain high standards and create a luxury experience for their guests, which is consistently developed through active involvement in the day-to-day operations, regular training sessions, and establishing open lines of communication.
Fordoun is a large part of the Bates’ heritage, “Our legacy is rooted in sustainability, community engagement, and exceptional hospitality. As the family grows, we hope to pass down these values and ensure that Fordoun remains a cherished sanctuary for generations to come,” shared Richard. With a focus on steady growth and expanding their offerings to create memorable experiences for their guests, the Bates family keeps their vision on the future.
Family Heirlooms
We celebrate one of our countryside businesses, Tiny Acorn, which prides itself on crafting functional furniture for the little ones while paying homage to heritage and family heirlooms.
WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS PHOTOS KRISTI NICOLE SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY
It all started with a tiny chair from 1933, hand-crafted by William John David Todd for his son, which inspired Tiny Acorn. Since the end of September 2023, Tammaryn McCathie, Todd’s great-granddaughter, continues the legacy today by crafting only quality pieces for little ones, who can eventually pass them on through their families. She fondly remembers the chair when she visited her grandparents' home. She would sit on it and enjoy her meals and TV shows as a little girl, “When my grandparents passed away, my mom placed the chair in our living room, where it was then used by my nephews. Despite having grown up, I found myself sitting on it frequently because of its enduring comfort,” she recalled. The name “Tiny Acorn” comes from a necklace with a tiny silver acorn pendant Tammaryn used to wear, which held sentimental value to her, and also came to symbolise the tiny hearts that inspired her to create the brand. Her mom later discovered a picture of her greatgrandfather and noticed that the frame was intricately carved with tiny acorns. “This serves as a beautiful reminder that our ancestors are forever etched into our lives, often without our awareness,” shared Tammaryn.
The first piece, the Learning Tower, was sold to a customer in Cape Town, which Tammaryn designed as a more secure alternative to a model she purchased several years prior that proved to be less sturdy. A part of what makes the Tiny Acorn pieces stand out is their functionality, perfectly suited to accommodate children's natural comings and goings at home. “All the other items
were designed around the needs I had at home that would help with day-to-day activities and help my little ones with selfassistance, comfort, and independence,” Tammaryn shared. While it’s not only about functionality, aesthetics also play a part, for example, one of the standout Tiny Acorn pieces is the Table and Chairs set, which consists of a square table and four highback chairs. It serves several purposes, from encouraging healthy eating habits to enjoying creative craft time, and importantly, cultivating shared family experiences as parents can easily interact with their little ones around the table. Furthermore, it has become one of the most utilised items on the product list and one that even Tammaryn and her family adores, “We find ourselves sitting with the kids enjoying meals with them all the time, and you will see my fatherin-law on a chair every time he visits us,” she shared. Other pieces include a Toy Box, Pull Cart, Swing, and Steps for when the little one needs an added boost around the house.
All the pieces are crafted from locally sourced poplar wood planks, which are characterised by their lightweight nature and light colour, and manufactured on Tammaryn’s farm. The end products are coated with a Woodoc Water-Borne sealer
leaving a non-yellowing finish. The items are easy to clean and will suit almost any interior décor style. Tammaryn plans to expand Tiny Acorn with an emphasis on her existing items and those with a proven record of functionality and practicality for other families, an approach she believes will build a strong foundation based on quality and reliability. While she also doesn’t offer custom units, she has an exciting project up her sleeve and shared with us about the dollhouse she constructed for her daughter as a Christmas gift, “Seeing the delight and engagement that this handmade gift has brought to my daughter has inspired me to consider adding it to my product line, spreading the joy to other families who may benefit from such a cherished toy,” she explained.
Our childhood memories can leave lasting impacts on us that we carry into adulthood. Some can also plant powerful seeds of inspiration and when left to grow, become lasting legacies. This is at the heart of Tiny Acorn, it’s not just a business, but a commitment to timelessness; creating quality handcrafted furniture and a cherished heritage. www.tinyacorn.co.za
Remembrance A Colourful
We share more about the recently established Ribbon Tree Initiative at The Old Mushroom Farm and how to dedicate a ribbon to your loved ones.
If you've been to The Old Mushroom Farm, you may have noticed several ribbons strung up in the passageway. These ribbons will form a permanent art installation, but there’s more to them than just for the show. They are part of a charity-based Memory Ribbon initiative, named Ribbon Tree, symbolising remembrance and dedication to loved ones. The idea was started and sponsored by Karin McGee from Nude Natural Products in March this year.
As an artist, Karin loves art installations, these are often permanent, large-scale, mixed-media constructions. It’s an art form that inspired her to create a similarly styled installation, but something that could be shared with meaning and value. She coupled her inspiration from the hospice’s annual Christmas tree of lights, in memory of loved ones, and aimed to recreate a similar sentiment with “Memory Ribbons”.
The ribbons would be installed where people could easily visit, and spend a few minutes remembering their loved ones— pets included, and The Old Mushroom Farm’s passageway provided the perfect spot. Participants can write whatever dedication they wish on the ribbon or they can leave it blank. The ribbon will then be hung on a paracord, which, when full, will eventually be hung from the roof, beautifully decorating the passage ceiling
It's a blessing to be able to help people remember their loved ones in such a beautiful way whilst also aiding those in need
with a rainbow of colours. While the initiative has had a slow start, the first string is nearly ready for the rafters.
It’s been a heartwarming experience up to this point with one participant sharing her dreams about coloured ribbons after her husband’s passing. “It's a blessing to be able to help people remember their loved ones in such a beautiful way whilst also aiding those in need.
I am so grateful to be able to give back and share my abundance,” shared Karin. Participants can purchase a ribbon, or several, from the Nude factory shop on The Old Mushroom Farm premises or online via email and the ribbon (s) will then be hung on their behalf.
The funds raised from the ribbon sales will be donated to various local charities. Whilst this is the only installation, Karin looks forward to introducing more at other locations in the future.

Discovering Paradise Experiencing Luxury at Sala Beach House
Anyone who knows me knows that I love consistency and have therefore frequented a certain hotel in Umhlanga often over the years and it’s my happy place! Queue Sala Beach House in Salt Rock!
Wow wow wow!
I can’t believe we had not been here before this! One night was certainly not enough and I can’t give them
enough praise for their above-andbeyond service. All the rooms from the villa offer wide views of the Indian Ocean. The self-contained villa itself covered all our needs for what we wanted for the night and way more.
From the moment we arrived, it was top-class service! We held a small intimate high tea for a couple of ladies and then six of us stayed over in the three bedroom villa for the night. The high tea got high praise
from everyone, the menu was great, the actual food exceeded our expectations!
Later that night, we ordered dinner in the villa, so that we could relax in our PJ’s and just enjoy an intimate meal together, everything was impeccable! When they say “Our chefs craft exquisite dishes using locally sourced ingredients for a truly unforgettable meal”, it's true!
The 7 a.m. free yoga class while enjoying the ocean view was a highlight for sure, it started the day just right and then onto a spectacular breakfast, with all the bells and whistles, served on our villa deck just ended off the stay perfectly.
Sala is private and intimate with spectacular food, service, views, and an in-house spa. It covers all your wants and needs and feels like you are not just in Salt Rock, but like you are enjoying a tropical island holiday somewhere truly special. We loved all the special touches that made it even more perfect; the fresh milk in the fridges, the coffee stations in each room, and the high-quality comfy slippers. The en-suite bathrooms are nextlevel gorgeous too.
Lindiwe handled all our bookings and requests and Henk and the team handled all our food needs, they are guest-focused and it shows in every detail and in every sad farewell from guests leaving, but the overwhelming final words every time is “see you soon”. I totally get it! 100% we will be back!
Villa info: The self-contained three bedroom villa is an exclusive beachside home for groups of friends or families. Each of the double rooms has a beautiful ensuite bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower along with a veranda, air-conditioning, and mini-fridge. The main living area is a spacious open-plan design that features a dining and lounge area, a full kitchen, and a guest bathroom. There is also a sparkling private plunge pool and a large terrace from which to enjoy the views and sounds of the ocean.

Tell Us 'Moo're
Meet James Kelly, the chairman of KZN for the Angus Breeders Society. He let us into the world of Angus farming and the role the society plays in the industry.
WORDS KAI COATES
Personal Journey
James Kelly's involvement with the Angus Breeders Society of South Africa began through a family connection. "My father-in-law was a breeder, and I used to help manage the farm. Here, I learned a lot about the breeding process," he recalls. In 2017, he officially joined the Angus Breeders Society, finding camaraderie and shared passion among fellow members. James notes the positive changes over the years, attributing much of the society's progress to the influx of younger members. "As a club, we have improved over the years as us 'youngsters' have joined on board and brought new, fresh ideas. This has brought more recognition to the society, especially on social media," he explains.
Passion for Angus
As the KZN Chairman, James' enthusiasm for the Angus breed is formed both through the exceptional breed and also the community of farmers. "The Angus are all-round good and very versatile breeds, holding the title of biggest breed in the world," he says.
Market Demand
"Being a meat that has good marbling, tenderness, and flavour, the market demand can fluctuate. However, Angus has a greater marketing value purely based on looks and good genetics that helps many herds of other breeds in traits they lack," James explains. He emphasises that the primary demand for Angus cattle is for breeding, which subsequently fuels the food market demand.
Breeders Society's Role
The Angus Breeders Society of South Africa plays a crucial role in supporting and promoting breeders nationwide. "Our society, nationally and in KZN, is about supporting farmers to be able to sell cattle, as well as supporting small retailers," James notes. In KZN, this support extends to businesses like Wozza Meat Co. and The Salt Slab, among others.
Future Opportunities
The rewarding nature of working with these cattle, for James, lies in the impact he can make. "It’s really rewarding to work with these cattle and help strengthen other herds around KZN and South Africa," he shares.
Looking ahead, James sees significant opportunities for the Angus breed in South Africa and globally. "Although the rest of the world is further evolving in this industry, South Africa is slowly growing in this area. The biggest opportunity for the breed in South Africa is the improvement of commercial herds," he predicts.
He highlights the role of composite breeds in enhancing farming and production across various herds, given Angus cattle's superior traits.
Sustainability Practises
Sustainability is a key focus for Angus breeders in South Africa. "A few breeders in South Africa are part of Woolworth’s beef programme that requires them to raise and breed hormone-free Angus; this includes hormone-free feed," James explains.
Such practises ensure the long-term health of their herds and the environment.
Community Involvement
Engaging with local communities and farmers is a vital aspect of promoting the Angus breed. "Our biggest engagement with our community here in KZN is through our annual July sale and social media," James shares. Additionally, local retailers contribute to the promotion of Angus, thereby creating more demand for farmers. James Kelly's journey with the Angus Breeders Society of South Africa is a testament to his dedication and passion for the breed.
Through innovative ideas, sustainable practises, and community engagement,
Did You Know?
• South Africa has 90% red Angus, whereas other breeding countries around the world have 90% black Angus.

AlignRT
A revolutionary approach to breast cancer treatment
IntelliRad Cancer Unit at St Anne's Hospital, Pietermaritzburg, offers the most advanced technology to provide the best possible cancer care. One year after its opening, IntelliRad reflects on their decision to adopt Vision RT’s state-ofthe-art Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) solution, AlignRT InBore™, and how it has significantly enhanced the safety and accuracy of their radiation treatments.
Why AlignRT?
AlignRT is a non-invasive, contactless technology that tracks a patient’s position before and during radiation therapy with sub-millimetric accuracy. This ensures that radiation is delivered exactly as planned, which is crucial for both maximising treatment effectiveness and minimising potential side effects.
The Evolving Landscape of Breast Cancer
Dr Hasinah Asmal, a Clinical Oncologist at IntelliRad, discusses the shifting landscape of breast cancer, “The prevalence of breast cancer is changing. We're seeing an
increasing number of young women (even in their 20s, 30s, and 40s) being diagnosed. As our patients are living longer, we’re also seeing older women with significant comorbidities, such as cardiac risk factors,
diabetes, and hypertension. We treat these patients aggressively with curative intent, and understand that external beam radiotherapy remains one of the most common and effective techniques for breast cancer."
Our High Standard of Treatment
Dr Cullis, a Clinical Oncologist at IntelliRad with over 20 years’ experience
shared, “For most of our breast cancer patients we utilise the new standard of hypofractionated radiation treatment. This is where the total dose of radiation is delivered in larger doses per treatment, resulting in fewer treatments, and shorter overall treatment times. Ensuring accurate delivery during this process is critical, which is one of the reasons we have invested in the AlignRT patient monitoring technology.”
The Importance of Reducing Radiotherapy-Induced Toxicities
Dr Asmal emphasises the importance of precision in radiotherapy, particularly for left-sided breast cancers, which are at greater risk of causing heart-related complications. "With Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH), we can increase the distance between the chest wall or breast and the heart, significantly reducing cardiac toxicity by nearly 26 to 45%. This presents a major advantage, particularly in young women in whom we envisage a long survival, and also in older women with cardiac risk factors where reducing the incidence of late cardiac toxicities becomes critical.”
The Power of AlignRT in Breast Cancer Treatment
Traditionally, radiotherapy required permanent tattoo markings to ensure treatment accuracy. However, these tattoos can be a painful reminder of the patient’s cancer journey. AlignRT’s SGRT technology can eliminate the need for tattoos or additional markings and has been shown in several studies to be at least as accurate as either marks or tattoos for positioning patients prior to treatment. As IntelliRad cancer unit prepares to implement AlignRT, the team is optimistic about the potential benefits this technology will bring. By adopting AlignRT, IntelliRad reaffirms its commitment to providing safer, more precise treatments and improving outcomes for all cancer patients.

New Urban Spaces
BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT YOUR DEVELOPMENT.
Westown is a brand-new destination in the making, one that connects people with spaces and experiences, bringing new opportunities to live, work and thrive. Since the first sod was turned in October 2022, nearly 75% of Phase 1, including Westown Square and road upgrades, has been completed.
We are now entering a critical phase focusing on landscaping, parking, and installing essential infrastructure like bulk water mains and treatment works. Westown is set to become a major commercial, tourism, and retail hub with an expected R15 billion investment over the next 10 to 15 years, and we have already seen R2.5 billion committed.
WHAT AMENITIES AND SERVICES DOES THE ESTATE OFFER THAT CATER TO RESIDENTS' NEEDS AND PREFERENCES?
Designed by MDS Architecture in a joint venture with Boogertman
+ Partners KZN, Westown Square will prioritise the movement of people, social spaces and lifestyle as part of the shopping experience. There’s a strong focus on open spaces, with densely planted walkways, pergola-covered seating, large trees and
planter boxes, celebrating the outdoors and setting the tone for Westown as a whole. Key features of Westown Square include the Town Centre and Gardens, the Amphitheatre, children’s play areas and The Barn, that will house an eclectic selection
of artisanal homeware, art, beauty, fashion, food and beverage outlets, alongside quality restaurants and niche concept eateries. Positioned as the spatial heart of Westown, it provides a permanent niche space for local traders and reflects the high-street design approach that makes Westown unique.
WHAT SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE ESTATE TO ENSURE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND RESIDENTS' WELL-BEING?
Sustainability is at the core of Westown. Shongweni Eco Park, for example, is a 6-star Greenstar-rated lifestyle estate
that incorporates sustainable features such as energyefficient designs, green spaces, and walking/running tracks that promote outdoor activity. Furthermore, Westown Square will prioritise open and green spaces with densely planted walkways and large trees, celebrating the outdoors. These elements ensure a positive environmental impact while enhancing the well-being of residents.

Furthermore, the development is creating job opportunities, improving infrastructure, and providing long-needed services to the community, such as the upcoming West Private Hospital. To cater for the 3 000 new residential units being built and occupied in the Westown urban core over the next 5-8 years, medical services are a must and The West Private Hospital will have a 100 beds available for patients.
Westown Square, The Barn, Shongweni Eco Park, Farrier Business Park, The West Private Hospital and the infrastructure upgrades and provisions in and around Westown, pave the way for the next precincts within the New City of the West. The Estate integrates green spaces, wetland areas, parks, and expansive gardens to create a tranquil and enriched lifestyle for its residents. A defining feature is the vibrant "pocket villages" with agriculturally-themed names, such as The Meadows, The Vineyards, The Orchards, and The Arboretum, which are connected by tree-lined, pedestrian-friendly streets designed to foster social interaction and physical activity.
WHAT TYPE OF POTENTIAL HOMEOWNERS IS YOUR DEVELOPMENT TARGETING?
St John’s Village is ideal for both younger and older generations, offering a multigenerational living environment where residents can enjoy modern homes with easy
access to amenities. The Estate is designed to suit homeowners looking for a simplified, sustainable lifestyle with a strong sense of community and connection to nature.
WHAT SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE ESTATE TO ENSURE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND RESIDENTS' WELL-BEING?
Sustainability is at the core of St John's Village. Residents are encouraged to adopt ecofriendly practises such as solar

energy, rainwater harvesting, and organic gardening in community allotments. These practices not only reduce the environmental footprint but also foster a deeper connection with nature, enhancing residents' quality of life
HOW DOES THE ESTATE ANTICIPATE AND ADAPT TO POTENTIAL CHANGES IN RESIDENTS' NEEDS OVER THE YEARS?
St John's Village is designed with the future in mind. Its mixed-use approach ensures that homes are located near essential services, shops, and communal spaces, making it convenient for residents as their mobility or needs change.

The Dairy at Hilton is the second development to be undertaken on the Hilton College Estate by Gwens Stream Estates (Pty) Ltd.
The company was established specifically for this purpose, to help build the Hilton College Endowment Foundation which funds bursaries to Hilton College. The first development was The Gates at Hilton which has earned a reputation as an outstanding place to live in the Midlands.
Set on a gently-sloping, northfacing site with views of the Karkloof to the north and the Drakensberg to the west, The Dairy offers residents the advantages of gracious country living in a safe, rural setting, adjacent to the Hilton College Estate, yet close to the amenities of Hilton Village, Pietermaritzburg, and the Midlands.
WHAT TYPE OF POTENTIAL HOMEOWNERS IS YOUR DEVELOPMENT TARGETING?
It is clear that, like The Gates, The Dairy appeals to people with young families as well as older people. As a generalisation, they appreciate the natural environment and the opportunities to embrace it, like cycling, walking, birding or simply living in a beautiful and safe rural home.
We have seen at The Gates the advantages of living in a relatively small estate, where relationships are important and there is a sense of community
WHAT IMPACT DOES THIS DEVELOPMENT HAVE ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
The economic advantages of this project to the area are significant. The development stage will provide considerable work opportunities as will the Estate once the homes are occupied. Hilton is booming and there is a demonstrable need for this kind of development. The Dairy will certainly contribute to the continuing growth.
DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR DEVELOPMENT A COMMUNITYCENTRIC ENVIRONMENT, AND IF SO, HOW WILL RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM LIVING IN THIS ENVIRONMENT?
We have seen at The Gates the advantages of living in a relatively small estate, where relationships are important and there is a sense of community. There is every reason to expect that The Dairy, which is very similar, will also deliver a wonderful lifestyle.

FLOWER POWER
It's that time again, spring is in the air, and we’re bringing you much ado about blossoms and blooms, identifying them, planting tips and care, and yes—eating them too! Bring your garden and kitchen to life this season.
There is power in making flowers a part of your everyday life. Not only does it elevate your garden and home, but it nourishes your spirit and senses. Maybe you always see the same flowers in your garden or neighbourhood, but don’t give them much thought beyond their beauty, or perhaps you would like to know more about how to start planting some in your garden.
What flowers do you choose and how can you identify them? We asked two of
our local garden nurseries, Blackwood’s Home of Gardening, with branches in Pietermaritzburg, Hilton, Howick, Assagay, Richards Bay; and the Midlands Garden Centre in Nottingham Road, for their expert knowledge of these questions and more!
Among some of the indigenous flowers you can expect to see during spring/summer are gazanias, Felicia amelloides (blue daisies), golden daisy bush (or Euryops pectinatus), certain pelargoniums, clivias,
osteospermum, nemesia, and more. The more exotic, non-indigenous flowers will include petunias, verbenas, marigolds, impatiens, brachyscome, pansies, columbine, iris, cherry blossoms, and more. Shrubs include azaleas, roses, English honeysuckle, hydrangeas, and brunfelsia.
What Flower is That?
If you want to start identifying some of these in and around your garden or neighbourhood, Blackwood’s suggests using apps like PlantSnap, iNaturalist, or
WORDS ALICIA DU PLESSIS

GAZANIAS

PictureThis. Simply take a snapshot of the flower and it will show you the relevant information. Google Lens is another option if you’re not a fan of using phone apps. You can also identify them the old-fashioned way by looking at the plant’s physical/visual qualities. The Midlands Garden Centre suggests a few ways you can do this; notice the shape and size of the leaves. What are the flowers’ colours, and do they have a scent? Does the plant have hard or soft wood stems? Does it have thorns? Does it produce fruit and what does it look like?
Before You Plant, Keep These Tips in Mind
Consider the climate in your area, its rainfall patterns and temperature ranges. Would you want annuals or perennials? While annuals provide continuous blooms throughout the season, they do need to be replanted each season, and often require regular maintenance. Perennials return year after year and won’t need to be replanted. Most perennials have lower maintenance requirements than annuals, but generally take longer to establish, and often have
shorter blooming periods. Choosing a combination of both can offer a more balanced approach, ensuring the immediate short-term annual blossoms and the more long-term structure offered by perennials. It will also depend on your preferences and gardening goals!
Keeping the Blooms Going All Season
To keep your gardens bright and colourful, choose long-blooming annuals like geraniums, marigolds, begonias, impatiens, and zinnias, and perennials such as pelargoniums, petunias, salvia, daylilies or coneflowers. Succession planting will give you a consistent yield from early, mid, to late-blooming flowers. Prune your plants regularly for a fresh look. Deadhead flowers, in other words, remove old blooms, and clear away weeds. Ensure effective pest control and that you have all the correct gardening tools.
Maintaining a Healthy Diet
The best nutrients are essential to keep your flowers looking fabulous. Blackwood’s recommends applying a
water-soluble fertiliser every two to four weeks during the growing season to boost your flowers' growth. Most plants require well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Adding mulch around your flowering plants will conserve moisture and reduces the growth of weeds.
The Midlands Garden Centre recommends a good-quality organic fertiliser with a higher percentage of phosphorus, which assists flower growth. Decomposed kraal manure is recommended for garden beds, but may not be suitable for very acidicloving plants or young seedlings. Always mix it into the soil well and allow it to age before applying to certain plants.
If you want more from your flowers, why not eat them? You can plant varieties of edible flowers and make your meals colourful and nutritious. Some examples include nasturtiums, which have a peppery flavour; calendula, which is mild and tangy; roses, which are sweeter; and chive blossoms, which have a mild onion flavour. Just remember to identify them properly, and that they are clean and free from any pesticides before you consume them.
We hope this will inspire you to add a few more flowers into your life, whether in your garden or home or simply to just stop and smell the roses! We leave you with a beautiful quote by the beloved Audrey Hepburn who said, “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

Saddle Up & Wind Down
We spent a weekend in the mountains, snuggling by a fire under the stars, and waking up to a true country living at Khotso Lodge & Horse Trails.
WORDS KAI COATES
As the year speeds to a close, faster than we care to admit, it’s worth taking a moment to escape and reflect on the months that have passed. A weekend getaway to the great outdoors offers the perfect opportunity, and I was fortunate enough to do just that in the picturesque mountains of the Southern Drakensberg.
Nestled in these scenic foothills is Khotso Lodge & Horse Trails, an adventurer’s dream founded by Steve Black. As the only operator running bespoke multi-day horseback expeditions across the Lesotho border, Khotso offers a chance to explore the untouched wilderness. But for those seeking a more laid-back escape, the lodge’s range of accommodation options is ideal for families, couples, or groups of friends. Our adventure began on Friday, with a leisure drive through rolling hills and gravel roads, leading us to Khotso’s rustic entrance. A sea of horses greeted us, along with Karoo, the resident cattle dog who
Did you know? Khotso means Peace
brought us a stick in the hope of a game of fetch—though only on his terms! After a few friendly pats, we were shown to our home for the weekend. The rondavel, one of three modernised self-catering units, was a cosy retreat equipped with everything we needed for our stay. With a double bedroom, a mezzanine with three single beds, a refurbished
kitchen, and a balcony offering stunning views of the gorge, it felt like the perfect blend of rustic charm and comfort. The internal heating stove and separate braai area promised warm, relaxing evenings under the stars. As we settled in, another unexpected host appeared—Pebbles, the farm’s fluffy grey cat and unofficial hiking guide. She proves that even a cat can be an excellent companion for outdoor adventures!
The evening was spent under a sky full of stars, as we enjoyed a homemade dinner, old-school tunes, and a crackling bonfire. The highlight? Toasting smores over the fire—because what’s a countryside escape without a sweet treat?
Saturday dawned bright and warm, a surprise for an August morning. We kicked off the day with a hike to the Balam River Deck nearby, a charming coffee shop owned by Khotso, located right on the riverbank. Sipping our coffees
while the sound of the river flowed around us was the perfect start to a leisurely day. Returning to our rondavel, we basked in the midday sun on the balcony, playing rounds of UNO (which I won, much to my partner’s dismay). But the real excitement was yet to come—a sunset horse ride through the mountains. We met our horses, Monty and Jet, who guided us with ease as we ascended to Elands Peak, a breathtaking 1720 metres above sea level.
This was our first-ever horse ride, and navigating the rocky terrain was thrilling.
At the summit, we paused to savour the view with cheese, crackers, and a drink as the sun dipped towards the horizon. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was everything we had hoped for, and our guide, Johannes, truly made it a memorable experience. We couldn't help but reminisce on our "cowboy moment" as we returned to the lodge for a hearty dinner. A delicious spread of chicken curry with Phutu (Pap) and fresh bread warmed us as we swapped stories with the owners and fellow guests, including travellers from Spain on a road trip through South Africa. The night ended with laughter,
music, and memories shared around the communal table.
As Sunday morning arrived, we packed up with mixed feelings— grateful for the experience but sad to leave. The drive home was filled with laughter and plans for our next adventure, already longing for another weekend at Khotso Lodge & Horse Trails. If you're looking for a sign to escape the everyday and reconnect with nature, this mountain retreat is it. Khotso offers the true country experience, from horseback adventures to peaceful nights under the stars—a perfect way to recharge and create unforgettable memories.

Bringing Hope to Hearing Loss
“Most people don’t know the challenges faced by those who are hard of hearing. They also don’t understand how to talk to the hard of hearing using spoken language,” explained Nomaza Malamlela Mei. This is at the heart of her new book, The Crowing Rooster, published on 22 June 2023. It is an inspirational and educational memoir about her journey with hearing loss, which was caused by meningitis when she was sevenyears-old, and how she learned to manage it and make a success of her life despite many hopeless moments that she endured. Nomaza spent most of her early childhood at her family farm and grew up at the Indawana location in Umzimkhulu.
She fell ill one day and her mother had to carry her on her back to a mobile clinic. The nurses assessed her and said she needed hospitalisation. With no available ambulances or transport other than the nurses’ vehicle, they decided to take her to a hospital where she was diagnosed with meningitis. If it weren’t for the nurses that day, she would have died. She followed in their footsteps and decided to become a nurse after matric. After completing her studies at the Transkei College of Nursing at Umtata General Hospital she became a professional nurse at St Apollinaris Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. She also specialised in child nursing science at King Edward
Hospital and studied nursing management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Nomaza wasn’t able to attend school for several years due to hearing loss and started using her first hearing aid when she was 13-years-old. The first sound she heard was a crowing rooster, “We know that when the dawn is nearer the roosters start to crow. To me, it was the dawn of a new chapter in my life as I was about to go back to school because of the hearing aid,” she explained. This inspired her book’s title, The Crowing Rooster. While she always wanted to share her story as a book, she also sought to raise awareness through it. It acts as a guide about hearing aids, their benefits, types of hearing loss, causes, and prevention.
She is driven to be an activist for hearing loss with a focus on teaching about its prevention, especially assisting children who struggle to cope at normal schools, “No child must stay at home due to a hearing problem when something can be done,” she shared.
Nomaza has been living in the Midlands since 2010, with her two kids and one grandchild, and loves being a part of the community here. She continues her journey through hearing loss with the hope of spreading her message about what she has learned to others in need, and to the rest of us about how we can better communicate and accommodate the hard of hearing. The Crowing Rooster is available through Takealot, Amazon, Draft2Digital, and the CFT Club e-commerce platform. You can also find them through Nomaza and Nuts About Books & Toys in Howick.

The Salt Slab
Texas Charm in the Midlands
WORDS LORINDA SCOTT
Alright alright alright! As Matthew McConaughey would say! The Salt Slab is a GREEN LIGHT! All the way!
Now having lived in Texas for almost two years on and off, and experienced some of the best authentic BBQ in Dallas and Austin, the Scott clan were super excited to experience Texas BBQ in the Midlands!
We arrived on opening day and as expected at any good BBQ joint, stood in line and waited to get our food! It’s all about the experience, yes, line waiting is something we are not used to in SA, but it’s the way BBQ is done! Also, quite authentically as we neared the beginning of the line, the brisket had run out! Oh well, there and then we planned to go back the next weekend!
It’s a Meat Lovers Paradise! The meat is sold by weight, so you can take as little or as much as you want! We decided to do a sharing platter and took a little bit (100g) of everything!
Their Meaty Lineup: from melt-in-your-mouth brisket (get in line early for this as it sells out first!) and juicy lamb, pork and beef ribs to tender pork belly and fabulous pulled lamb or pork, rack of lamb, and cheese and jalapeño sausages, they literally have something to satisfy every craving!
On the Side: Cold: the classic potato salad is a must with BBQ, it’s super good! We also enjoyed the coleslaw and they have a signature slab salad. Warm: you cannot NOT have creamy mac and cheese, (it’s a side with everything in the USA!) or try the baked scalloped potatoes, then the oh so good cowboy beans, or rich creamed corn.
Dessert: which you grab at the same time in line, (just do it! You won’t be sorry!). Texas classic banana pudding—we thoroughly enjoyed this! It’s rich but oh so worth it! And they also have cheesecake by the slice.
Now go find your tribe or table, order your drinks from the lovely waitresses and get ready to feast to your heart’s content, whether
you’re going big or just want a taste of everything! The food is exceptional, worth the wait and price! The cowboy look, feel, vibe and music allows for a really enjoyable afternoon! The forever view of the Midlands, the constant flow of people coming and going is lovely to see, it’s a true Texas BBQ experience! (And yes… we went back and got the brisket the next weekend!)
The Salt Slab team can’t wait to serve you up something special!

Spring Clean Your Diet
WORDS STEPHANIE JOYNER
As the seasons change in South Africa, many people experience the familiar symptoms of seasonal allergies: sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. While medications like antihistamines and nasal sprays are commonly used, emerging evidence suggests that dietary changes can also help manage these symptoms effectively. Here's how incorporating specific foods into your diet can support your immune system and reduce allergy symptoms.
Embrace Anti-inflammatory Foods
Inflammation plays a significant role in allergic reactions. To combat this, include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish like snoek, sardines, and mackerel. Additionally, incorporating flax seeds and chia seeds into your diet can provide similar benefits. Local fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants, also help reduce inflammation. Berries, spinach, and avocados are excellent choices. When avocados are in season, try a slice of whole-grain toast topped with creamed avocado and a sprinkle of chia seeds for breakfast. Or how about a breakfast smoothie with spinach, frozen berries, yoghurt, and a drizzle of honey?
Boost Your Gut Health with Probiotics
A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for a well-functioning immune system. Fermented foods rich in probiotics, such as yoghurt, kefir, and sauerkraut, can enhance gut health. A South African favourite, maas (fermented milk) is a traditional and accessible source of probiotics. Studies indicate that a balanced gut microbiome can improve the body’s response to allergens, potentially reducing the severity of allergic reactions. Including these probioticrich foods in your daily diet can be a simple yet effective strategy to manage seasonal allergies.
Incorporate Quercetin-Rich Foods
Quercetin, a natural antihistamine found in various fruits and vegetables, helps stabilise mast cells and reduce the release of histamine. Apples, onions, and berries are all excellent sources of quercetin. Apples and onions are available all year round and when berries are not in season, consider using frozen berries.
Vitamin C: Nature’s Antihistamine
Vitamin C is known for its antihistamine and antioxidant properties. Regular consumption of citrus fruits like oranges, naartjies, and grapefruits, is a delicious way to increase your vitamin C intake and help lower histamine levels in your body. Bell peppers, broccoli, and strawberries are also excellent sources.
Consider Local Honey
While the evidence is mixed, some people believe that consuming local honey can help build tolerance to local pollen, potentially reducing allergy symptoms. Adding a spoonful of local honey in your tea or yoghurt will provide some relief, and it’s delicious.

Embrace the Unpredictable Path
WORDS TIM JOHNSON
If you’ve ever been the proud owner of a meticulously crafted multi-year business or life plan, you’re not alone. Having a long-term plan often gives people a sense of comfort and direction, but the truth is that life doesn’t follow a linear pathway, and to be fair it would be pretty boring if it did. This isn’t to say that setting goals for what you’d like the future to look like doesn’t have merit, it’s just that being too narrow could result in missing out on other opportunities that could lead to an even more fulfilling destination.
I always chuckle at how seriously we took our strategic business planning at the end of 2019, and then with absolute certainty and conviction presented our long-term roadmap, beautifully packaged into the subsequently obsolete PowerPoint Presentation entitled ‘Vision 20/20’. Needless to say, 2020 had other ideas and when we finally emerged from the other side of the pandemic, we had changed our Destination, Route, Mode of Transport, and Passengers. The moral is that sometimes if we think too far ahead, we might as well be using a vintage compass to guide us, rather than a GPS.
As if to highlight my point further, I am in my second year as the Executive Head of our school, Carlyle College, in Nottingham Road. Three years ago, the idea of taking this challenge on would have been unthinkable, a complete directional change. My experience, limited to the amount of time I spent in the headmaster's office as a youngster. Yet, here I am, forty-something but feeling like the new kid, and forging a path in a different sector that I am becoming more passionate about as each day goes by. I think it is this lived experience that also defines my feelings about some of the archaic and
unhelpful paradigms that exist in the educational landscape and the pressure that is being exerted on our kids from a young age. In particular, this is evident in the obsession many parents or schools seem to have with ‘making all the right decisions’ when it comes to their children's subject choices or career pathways. Remember when you were a teenager and adults would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It felt like a trick question because, honestly, most of us were still figuring out if we liked pineapple on pizza. Here’s the kicker. Being expected to choose a career pathway at a young age doesn’t just seem unrealistic, it’s downright out of touch with how careers and personal interests actually evolve.
At a young age, it’s tough to fully grasp what you’re good at or what skills and talents you’ll develop over time. Unless you are one of the lucky few to find your calling in your teens, forcing yourself into a specific career path too early on can limit your potential and prevent you from discovering what you’re truly capable of. I prefer the idea of allowing your skills and strengths to evolve naturally as you gain more experiences. You can take it from the son of a farmer, who wanted to be a pediatrician, studied industrial psychology, sold vacuum cleaners, ran an advertising agency, is the principal of his own estate agency and now runs a school in Nottingham Road. There is no clear pathway forward, only the one that has got us to where we are… for now.
