NOTE
There are a series of moments that are pivotal in our lives. Sometimes these moments are chosen, sometimes divine, and oftentimes consequential. Irrespective of how they unfold, we seldom appreciate or recognise them when they happen, but rather need time to distil them to better understand them.
I recall a few of mine. My first conversation with God, my first love that fashioned a lifetime of love, our wedding day that forged a clan, the birth of each of the kids that grew that clan, and a handful of adventures we’ve taken together that added spice and zest to our lives.
Those are the moments past, but what about those yet to come? For us, our clan, we’ve got one of the few visible, predictable moments coming, and it’s a big one. One that we’ve been waiting for and the first of three that are guaranteed to change our lives. This month, the Scott clan celebrates our first wedding! This is really big for us. The clan expands and we welcome a son-in-law who is a very, very special man. Not only does he bring so much to our clan but, most
importantly, he loves our precious daughter in ways greater than we could have ever hoped for. As for Roxy, well, there aren’t enough words or pages in this magazine to express how proud we are of her and how much we love her.
The moments I've shared have all been expressions of love, in one way or another, but, for me, Roxy and Warren’s wedding feels like a culmination of all of that coming together in one big celebration.
On that day, I’ll be a collection of different roles. I’ll be a proud, loving and excited father. I’ll be a husband reflecting on my own journey with an amazing wife. I’ll be a son missing a mom, wishing she was around to celebrate with us all. I’ll be a son-in-law grateful to have a dad around to share the moment. I’ll be a brother celebrating with another brother. I’ll be just me, emotional, grateful for a well-lived life filled with amazing people all around me. I’ll be a man made up of a lifetime of moments, remembering those past, celebrating those happening and looking forward to those to come.
I hope you enjoy our latest edition. Thank you for allowing me to share my personal reflection… It’s a simple reflection of the journey of a man made up of moments.
Til the next edition, God bless.

Navigating the Dance of Boundaries
WORDS CANDICE KING
Have you ever found yourself saying yes when every fiber of your being screamed no? Perhaps you've spent countless nights tossing and turning, replaying conversations in your head, wondering if expressing your true feelings would lead to conflict or rejection. Boundaries and difficult conversations are terms we've all heard of but are still fuelled and tainted with negativity. I often find my clients avoiding this conversation or needing to know what these terms mean.
Reflect for a moment on the last time you felt resentful or exhausted from always being the 'go-to' person. Can you recall the emotion tied to always saying yes? It begs the question: How can we step into the courage to set boundaries and the vulnerability to have those tough conversations that seem to loom over us?
The journey begins with reflection. Have you noticed that sharing how you feel often gets postponed until emotions boil over, leaving conversations more explosive than productive? Why do we wait until we're at our breaking point to express our needs and desires?
Setting boundaries and engaging in difficult conversations is about being brave in the moment; however, it's also about the groundwork laid before these moments arise. Consider this: When was the last time you took a moment to reflect before diving into a tough talk? It's in this reflection that we find clarity - not just about what we need to communicate but also about understanding our part in the dance of relationships.
Here are some actionable steps to guide you through setting boundaries and navigating difficult conversations:
• Before approaching the conversation, take a moment to reflect. What exactly do you need to communicate, and why is it important to you? Understanding your feelings and motivations provides a clear base from which to start.
• Clarity is your ally. Think about how you can express your needs and feelings succinctly and clearly. Remember, it's not just about what you say but how you say it.
• Approach the conversation with an open heart and mind. Be ready to listen as much as you speak, and stay curious about the other person's perspective.
• Remind yourself that you can't control the outcome. What you can control is your approach and your willingness to engage in a meaningful exchange.
If the thought of setting boundaries or having difficult conversations feels overwhelming, consider seeking support from a friend, family member or professional who can offer guidance and perspective.
I encourage you to take one small step today. Identify one boundary you've struggled to set or one conversation you've been putting off. Use the steps outlined above to approach it with a new mindset. The dance of boundaries doesn't have to be full of fear and anxiety. As we build the courage to speak up, it will get easier as we do it.
Setting boundaries and engaging in difficult conversations is about being brave in the moment

Dental Studio Owner
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS
I am a graduate of the esteemed dental faculty at the University of the Western Cape. After I completed my degree, I landed a job as a military dentist with the South African National Defence Force, an experience that truly humbled me. Years later, an opportunity presented itself when I was offered the position of Head Dentist at PearlsMED. I seized the opportunity and opened my dental studio in 2021.
At Pearly Whites Dental Studio, we provide a wide range of treatments, including general dentistry, cosmetic procedures and paediatric dentistry.
My passion for dental care drives me to provide every patient with exceptional service in a relaxing and enjoyable environment, with my specialisations including implant and aesthetic dentistry. My goal is to create a space where modernised dental treatment can
improve patients' health, appearance and overall quality of life.
HOW DO YOU ADAPT TO CHANGES IN THE DENTISTRY INDUSTRY?
Flexibility is key in responding to changes within the dental profession. This field is constantly evolving with new techniques, technologies and research findings. I try my best to keep up by adopting a culture of continuous learning by attending seminars, and conferences, utilising technology, collaborating with peers and prioritising patient-centred care.

I am grateful to have my dad, Dr Sundrum (a respected orthodontist), and my mom, Professor M. Chetty (an oral pathologist), who have helped me navigate this journey. With their support, I am updated on all the latest research and technology in the field.
WHAT VISION DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR PRACTICE?
WHAT MAJOR SETBACKS HAVE YOU FACED? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Transitioning from a public service, where all administrative tasks, accounts and booking patients are done for you, to private practice was challenging. However, I was fortunate to have a competent team to support me. My assistant, with her years of experience in the industry, knows the
I see my dental practice growing in both scope and reputation. While my practice has a repute for aesthetics, I aim to expand my services to meet the evolving needs of my patients, integrating complete orthodontics and expanding my team all while maintaining a commitment to excellence, compassion and integrity.

Wesley Singh
PEOPLE Beauty Entrepreneur
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS
I'm the founder of Makeup by Wes and the owner of MBW Exuberance Studio. Makeup by Wes was born from firsthand experiences in the makeup industry. Having worked as a makeup artist since 2019, I identified a significant gap in the market for inclusive, high-quality beauty products and services. This insight led me to establish not only a cosmetics line but also a beauty studio.
Our offerings encompass a wide range of cosmetics, including foundations with an extensive shade range, vibrant eyeshadows and long-lasting lip products, as well as professional hair, makeup and beauty services. I'm deeply immersed in the beauty industry. My passion is to empower people to express themselves through our diverse offerings.
HOW DO YOU STAY INNOVATIVE IN THE BEAUTY MARKET?
Staying innovative in the beauty industry means continuously researching and adapting to new trends while deeply engaging with our customers. We actively incorporate their feedback into our product development. Recognising the need to diversify our offerings, we expanded our focus to include a comprehensive makeup range. This strategic expansion was driven by the desire to ensure that our products could reach our customers effectively, even when in-person services were less feasible. This shift has allowed us to broaden our impact and meet our customers' needs more fully, wherever they are.
HAVE YOU FACED ANY MAJOR SETBACKS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Like any business, we've faced challenges, especially when COVID-19 disrupted our face-toface services. Initially, we encountered hurdles with product formulation and finding the right manufacturing partners who could meet our standards for quality and ethical production. We overcame these obstacles by steadfastly adhering to our values and by cultivating strong, transparent relationships with our customers and stakeholders.
WHAT VISION DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR BUSINESSES?
I envision Makeup by Wes expanding into international markets and extending our product lines to include more skincare products. Building on the success of our skincare-infused cosmetics, we plan to delve deeper into products catering to both beauty and skin health. In the next few years, I see us becoming a leading
name in inclusive and skin-friendly cosmetics, continuously innovating to meet diverse beauty needs. We aim to grow in size and lead the way in sustainability within the beauty industry, reinforcing our commitment to ethical and environmentally conscious practices.

THE ANDERSON FAMILY & SPAR GROUP
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
The SPAR Group is synonymous with quality, affordability and convenience. KWIKSPAR offers shoppers the convenience of grabbing your everyday essentials, snacks and other items quickly and easily. Especially in the bustling community of Umhlanga, a quick in-and-out to the grocer can save people a world of time.
The Anderson family, known for their dedication to the retail industry and strong values, upholds the high quality of what you would expect from a SPAR store. At the head is Mark Anderson, who found
his passion and purpose in retail when he purchased his first SPAR store in 1997. “Having worked in the corporate industry for 20 years, I realised I had no real influence over my career. After I purchased my first SPAR, I felt like I had regained that sense of control over my future,” he explains. “What I put in, I could get out.”
Working alongside him are his sons, Travis, Keegan and Tyrone, who joined the family business and bring fresh ideas and energy to the team. Director Chris Von Allerman, with 14 years of experience within the SPAR group, takes the role of leading
operations. He is unmatched in managing the services that ensure superior customer experiences. Customers remember and return to the Anderson family’s stores for their cleanliness, high caliber and diversity of products and services. “We have an extensive range of gifting, decor, imported items and health products. These aspects make our store a destination shopping experience.”
“The core values of our family are based on trust, family, commitment and having ownership of our future and growth,” Mark elaborates. The Andersons strive to
26 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA
leave a legacy in the retail sector that will be remembered for being the best in the industry. “The rewarding aspect is receiving recognition for our hard work from our customers and SPAR itself.”
When running businesses with your family, it’s important to allocate time to being business partners and time to being a parent for your kids. “We are fortunate that we have a great team in place, with appropriate management and departmental heads, which allows us time to spend quality time with our families,” he says. All the Andersons contribute to the business within their areas of expertise, from design and marketing to execution and more. “I am blessed to have a creative, committed family who are all involved in all three stores.” When it comes to customer service, their standard is to exceed expectations. “We have four directors who have the same vision and values which we drive on a daily basis. We work exceptionally well together,” Mark expresses. The businesses are run with enthusiasm and hands-on management.
The Ridge KWIKSPAR has recently joined the family under the Anderson management, where they are focusing on training, securing the best ready-to-eat meals and finding the finest cuts for the butchery and fresh produce for the deli. They have also given the store a revamped design to match their other stores and make customers feel at home. Since parking can be difficult to secure, especially in Umhlanga, they are proud to share that they have 102 secure, undercover parking bays for your convenience. “When it comes to taking over Ridge KWIKSPAR, I’ve always had the philosophy that I will never fail,” adds Mark. “The store was not performing and in a period of six months we have managed to turn the store into a successful business.”
See for yourself! Umhlanga SUPERSPAR will be working on a new campaign in the next few months where you can save 50% off your purchases. There are exciting things coming for the Anderson family and their SPAR customers!

A New Way to Gym
We don't PLAY boxing
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
Stepping into the gym can be a formidable interaction with the equipment and people. You know you want to do something to lead a healthier and active lifestyle, but where do you begin? Taking these difficult steps into consideration, Fight Club has made it their mission to provide a reliable and structured training programme and professional trainers to ensure you get the most out of your time at the gym. This form of functional fitness combines purposeful movement and boxing techniques to create an inspiring and motivating atmosphere.
Established in 2014, Fight Club made its way to Umhlanga after the market showed the need for their expertise and training style. The name is inspired by the idea of having something important to you that’s worth fighting for. Catering for those in the corporate world, they aim to take away the anxiety and uncertainty that come with being a gym newbie. With an in-house developed application specifically made for Fight Club, you can track your sessions and book them easily to fit into your day!
Taking care of you are their professional trainers who oversee every part of your training regimen, from the planning to the execution. They have group classes and private sessions available, depending on which better suits your goals, schedule and personality. Even in group classes, you are given the attention you need. There’s no slacking off in the back, unfortunately. They promote a fun and relatively easy way to keep up those fitness levels, but you’ve got to put in the work, too. Business! Dad, Let’s Go into
WORDS JORDYN TROLLIP
The relationship between a father and their child is something special, especially when it leads to a successful business! We spoke to a few dynamic dad-and-kid duos about how they navigate family life and running a business together.
38 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA
Jewellery Duo
One local business steeped in familial history, and now run by a father-andson team, is Damjee Jewellers. “My great-grandfather and his sons opened a jewellery store in 1939 in Durban CBD,” says Yasheen Nathoo, the current owner of Damjee Jewellers. “When my grandfather passed away in 1968, my dad, Daulat, entered the business very young.”
The brand has only grown from there and is currently a fourth-generation familyrun jewellery business! Damjee Jewellers is involved in manufacturing, retail, wholesale and importing fine gold and diamond jewellery.
Yasheen has been involved in the business since he was 12 years old and spent most of his school holidays in the store. In 2001, Daulat was offered an opportunity to open a shop in Gateway Theatre of Shopping and asked Yasheen to join him. Over two decades later, Damjee Jewellers is a trusted, reputable brand with clients from across the globe.
Yasheen’s role is to source new product locally and internationally and, most importantly, grow the business. “I attend various jewellery fairs around the globe and have to keep afresh of new ideas.” Daulat has stepped back from the business a bit, but he still handles the administrative work. “It is important to split roles so you each have time to focus on tasks,” they add.
Although Yasheen admits that there will always be disagreements when running a business with family, the upside of working with his father is their shared values and common goal to keep the business successful and stable.
“When you start working with your parents, you follow the patterns and layouts that they set up, but as you become more involved and understand how things work, you make changes,” he shares. “A fatherand-son-run business is special because we share the same beliefs and trust each other. We are successful because both generations are open to change and
innovation.” To other dad-and-son duos who want to start a business together, Yasheen and Daulat advise that you have a shared vision, balance your personal and professional life and maintain a strong relationship.
“At the end of the day, we want to give customers insight and knowledge into their purchases. They have done their homework but want a personalised interaction, and that’s what they get with a family business.”

Film Fanatics
Newbie on the block, Outdoor Cinema 031 is a fun venture started by a dynamic father-and-daughter duo. They offer an exciting outdoor cinema experience with monthly screenings ranging from relatively new releases to classic films, enjoyed from your car or as a picnic.
Dudley Lambert had the idea to launch an outdoor cinema on the East Coast after seeing its success overseas. He started small, organising private backyard movie screenings alongside his foam party business. Word got around and soon he was hosting fundraising movie nights at schools. When the opportunity arose at two ideal locations, he took the plunge and decided to host public drive-in cinema events, inviting his daughter, Sansha, to join him in the business.
“I had just left my job and entered 2024 with a new perspective,” explains Sansha. “When my father shared his business idea with me, I was genuinely
intrigued. I felt deeply honoured when he offered me the chance to become his business partner. Undoubtedly, the journey hasn't been without its challenges, and I've had to make tough decisions along the way, but it's through these experiences that we learn, grow and evolve.”
Their first public screening in Durban North exceeded expectations, selling over 300 tickets, and their inaugural drive-in event was sold out!
Dudley and Sansha bring different skills to the table when running Outdoor Cinema 031. Sansha manages their social media presence and oversees the smooth running of operations on the day of events. Meanwhile, her father serves as the final approver, ensuring posts and entertainment choices align with their vision. He also oversees the movie choices and licensing and the event setup on the night of the screenings. “The benefits of collaborating include the
opportunity to spend significant time together and mutually learn and grow,” adds Sansha. “This shared experience fosters a deeper connection between us. While working with family presents its challenges, our collective efforts can yield significant achievements.”
The best advice the Dudley pair can offer to other dads and daughters who want to go into business together is to “keep your work out for your personal relations and keep your relationship out of your work”!

Service Synergy
Five years ago, Alistair Feuilherade opened Mega Serve, a small but professional specalised service provider concentrating on contract cleaning, waste services, waste skips, postfire and flood cleaning, pre-occupancy cleaning, waterproofing, roof painting, gutter cleaning, high-pressure cleaning and general maintenance to properties. After decades in the security industry, his father, Anthony, retired as the Director of Excellerate Services and decided to join his son in growing Mega Serve and helping to make it the most successful business it can be. Due to his extensive experience in offering excellent service to clients, Anthony has benefitted the business in many ways. He is involved in Mega Serve from a guidance and growth perspective, while Alistair focuses more on the day-to-day running of the business.
“Although we have different roles, Alistair and I are very much the same in the way we form working relationships with our clients and continually communicate with them. A lack of communication will destroy any business,” explains Anthony. The pair chat daily to ensure they are on the same page and are on schedule to complete jobs. They also have a very capable Manager, Celine, who does all the planning and administration.
Working too close together can be stressful at times, so Anthony and Alistair try not to interfere too much with each other’s responsibilities. “As long we don’t live in each other's pockets, and keep our discussions short and sweet without criticising each other, we can face any challenge together. There will be times when we disagree but that’s all part of running a business,” Anthony adds. Going into business with family is not always the easiest thing to do, but Anthony and Alistair know that with trust, respect and communication, everything will run smoothly. The great thing about working with your father is that you can benefit from amazing advice, and Alistair’s dad taught him the invaluable tip that any issue from a client needs to be resolved today - tomorrow is too late - as well as the key practice of never leaving the office before resolving an argument.

Umhlanga Rocks is a vibrant area, full of unique spots just as trendy and lively as the people who inhabit it.
This bustling hub is also home to RoxInk Bespoke Tattoo and Piercing Studio, situated across from the Beverly Hills Hotel. Their space has actually been a tattoo studio for over 20 years! So, when it became available, Darren Beitz decided to open an innovative space where anyone and everyone feels welcome, continuing the tattoo legacy. The studio has been open and trading since late 2023.
The team at RoxInk are professionals in their respective fields, with 45 years of experience between them, and absolutely love what they do. Even though owner Darren isn’t in the body art industry himself, his love for the field is evident in his personal pieces and the special place each one holds in his heart.
Darren is an ex-professional bodyboarder, surfer, yoga instructor and Umhlanga local. If he’s not doing any of those, he’s busy covering free space on his skin with tattoos. He incorporated his interests into the decor scheme of the studio with surfboards and
tropical elements scattered throughout the shop, breaking up the vintage decor to give the space a more laidback feel. “We enjoy meeting new people and swapping stories,” Darren says. “Peace of mind and being sensitive to the public’s needs is what we strive for.”
Tattoo artist Zane Revell is self-taught in the art and especially enjoys doing realism, fine line and traditional pieces. You can find him riding Harleys or spearfishing when he’s not creating unique works of art. Raj Ramnarain, the other artist, has had extensive experience with tattoo studios

Known for walking around barefoot and being strict with aftercare, Lesmeri Postma is the studio’s professional body piercer. She has been doing this for 24 years and makes every client feels special. Her consultation is in-depth and addresses any concerns a client may have. Her aftercare instructions are meticulous to ensure every piercing heals properly, to avoid infection and to get the best out of your piercing. Personally, her instructions haven’t led me astray 10 piercings later. Let’s not forget the mascot of RoxInk, Hannah May, who recently took over the role from her older sister, Mila. She is a French bulldog and the sweetest puppy you’ll ever meet!
Getting your first tattoo or piercing can be a daunting experience, but the RoxInk team is here to make sure everything goes smoothly and you’re comfortable at all times. They have a range of refreshments - hot, cold, bitter or sweet - available to sip on as you gaze at

Hygiene is of the utmost importance at the studio, so while children aren't allowed behind the counter, there is ample space for them to wait and large screen TVs to keep them, and other clients, entertained in the welcome area. They also have a screen available, should you prefer to experience your session in a more private setting. Merchandise is available if you want to show off your visit to RoxInk!

Flavours of SUCCESS
Explore the inspiring journeys of two dynamic restauranteurs.
WORDS KAI COATES
Jono Dempster OWNER OF CHUNKY’S BURGER COMPANY
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR RESTAURANT.
Howzit. My name is Jono Dempster (a.k.a. Chunky) which is what everyone calls me. Durban boy educated right here at DHS, after which I did a degree in Fine Arts at Natal Technikon. Chunky’s Burger Co. is a concept that was born out of the challenges presented by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns as a way to take advantage of restrictions on dine-in service as a way to focus on takeaways. What started as a dark kitchen has evolved into its own store in Glenashley. The idea was to create a small awesome space which not only made great chow but also had an awesome brand culture which for me is so important.
WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY, AND WHAT INITIALLY SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN THIS TYPE OF CAREER?
So I started work as a waiter at a small Mexican spot called El Bandido at 17. From there I worked my first bartending job at The Monkey Bar on Florida Road before moving across to the Durban legend that was Billy The Bums on Windermere Road. I worked as a bartender for a couple of years before taking on a management role and then eventually buying a stake in the business until we sold in 2014 some 12 years later.
HOW DOES YOUR OWN PERSONALITY/BRAND SHAPE THE STYLE OF YOUR FOOD AND THE ATMOSPHERE IN YOUR RESTAURANT?
Well, I like to keep things relaxed and casual and to be honest do not take myself that seriously most of the time. I really just like to be around cool people and make some great burgers while doing that. If we can provide an awesome dynamic and culture at a store level, it will always transfer to the customer.
ARE THERE ANY CHEFS OR RESTAURATEURS WHO INSPIRE OR HAVE INSPIRED YOUR WORK?
So in this game, you are always learning and as a result, you will draw inspiration from many people who you meet and work with. If I had to mention names it would have to be Derryck Myers and Alan Laz as well as the other partners from my time at Billy’s and Guy Cluver who owns Bellvue Café and co-founded the Lupa brand. Each of these guys (as well as a few others) has added to my development over the years, which has set the framework for how I operate today.

Sandesh Rampersad
OWNER OF ROTI & CHAI
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR RESTAURANT.
I am a father of two teenage daughters and a passionate animal lover, having rescued a few flurry furball Persians. My professional endeavours revolve around a demanding schedule that encompasses the roles of a dedicated father, a successful restaurateur, a culinary entrepreneur, and a spice mixologist. I am the proud custodian of the renowned Roti & Chai brand, which boasts three branches and a fully equipped tandoor on wheels food truck. Our culinary expertise lies in the realm of Indian street food, complemented by an enticing array of aromatic chai flavours.
WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY, AND WHAT INITIALLY SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN THIS TYPE OF CAREER?
I lack formal culinary training or hospitality experience, and I previously lacked basic cooking skills. However, after a tumultuous and challenging period in my life, which resulted in the loss of most of my possessions and employment, I found myself in a state of homelessness and unemployment. In order to generate income, I improvised and experienced a profound spiritual moment that inspired me to create something special for my children to enjoy, as dining out was no longer an affordable option. This marked the beginning of our culinary journey.
CAN YOU SHARE A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER THAT SOLIDIFIED YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE A PATH IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY?
We had set up a temporary gazebo to sell our Tandoori Chicken Naan wrap at the Durban Street Food Festival. A customer purchased our wrap and after the first bite, exclaimed with great enthusiasm that it was the most delectable culinary experience they had ever encountered. This positive feedback has been echoed by numerous customers since, fueling our determination to expand our business and share our exceptional product with a wider audience.
ARE THERE ANY CHEFS OR RESTAURATEURS WHO INSPIRE OR HAVE INSPIRED YOUR WORK?
Remy, the protagonist of Disney/Pixar's animated film Ratatouille, exemplifies the notion that anyone can achieve culinary greatness. Drawing inspiration from my late grandmother and mother, I have developed a deep passion for cooking. Furthermore, I greatly admire the pioneers of the American fast-food industry, as well as the success of local restaurants such as Spur and Steers. Today, we operate side by side and are even neighbours at the Suncoast location.

Male Wellness
Evolving beyond the stereotypes, embracing skincare and self-care as essential components of overall well-being.
WORDS KAI COATES
Typically, men’s health and wellness regimes might comprise of hitting the gym, supplements, and owning the 3-in-1 Head and Shoulders that apparently “does it all”. But, nowadays men are slowly getting rid of that 3-in-1 method as they acknowledge how they take care of their health, and their body's overall wellness is just as important. The tables are turning and there are so many options for men to invest in self-care to improve their wellbeing.
Did you know that our skin is our largest organ? Yeah, skin is an organ and just as we, and society, fixate on internal organ health, why aren’t we as conscious about our skin? As a female, I guess it is easier to assess, take care of my skin and have a routine as it has been marketed to us for years, but now the spotlight is widening to shine on men as well.
Skin Renewal Umhlanga highlights that changes to the face happen to men too, even if they often overlook the signs of ageing. The key to maintaining a youthful and cool appearance lies in consulting an Aesthetic Doctor for a male facial treatment assessment and a personalised treatment plan. This can effectively turn back the clock by 6 to 24 months.
Oh, and men's facial skin, just like women's, suffers from sun damage, becoming thinner and prone to age spots, lines, and wrinkles. For men with darker skin tones, loss of elasticity is a particular concern, leading to sagging skin that needs vigilant care. It's not just a facial issue either; it's about overall wellness. This is where sunscreen becomes your best ally.
Even if sunscreen shopping isn't your thing, it's never too late to start using SPF. Don't be part of the group that finds applying sun protection a chore and skips it. It's undoubtedly easier than resorting to a facelift, and no man wants to look prematurely aged. Incorporating

The books a person reads can tell you a lot about them - what inspires them, what stories they enjoy and the ideas that have influenced their thinking. Join businessman, motivational speaker and author Grant Gavin as he takes us through his history of reads and recent favourites.
WHICH BOOK HAS INSPIRED YOU THE MOST IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?
The Power of Now by Eckardt Tolle. Like most people, I tend to live in my own head and always place myself in some future situation, good or bad, either preparing myself or dreaming. The two biggest lessons from this book for me are (1) the more you resist something, the more you give it friction and the worse it gets, and (2) the future does not exist - only the present is real. Your choices and
behaviours right now impact the future you will create. So focus on the now.
WHICH BOOK HAS INSPIRED YOU THE MOST IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?
Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. It was the first business book I read, and it was given to me by my father when I was 18. It stimulated an interest in property and I immediately set myself the goal to buy a property in my early
20s, which I did, in London, at age 22. The main lesson in the book is about generating passive income streams.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC AUTHORS OR MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS WHOSE WORK RESONATES WITH YOU?
There are a few, but I am a big Simon Sinek fan. I watch his video content online more than I read his books, but his thoughts on business, relationships, personal growth and leadership are always insightful.
56 | WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA
AUTHOR OF THOUGHTONOMY, GRANT GAVIN
Reading is my passion and my escape since I was 5 years old. Overall, children don't realize the magic that can live inside their own heads. Better even then any movie.
- Eckhart Tolle
WHICH BUSINESS-RELATED BOOKS HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED YOUR DECISIONMAKING PROCESS?
Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss is one of my favourite books. It was given to me as a thankyou gift by a friend. It’s a book on negotiating, written by the former head of FBI Hostage Negotiation.
The stories, lessons and tips are so practical and can relate to business, sales and relationships. Another impactful book is The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni, which is an amazing book about
trusting the power of conflict in team dynamics.
BEING IN REAL ESTATE, ARE THERE ANY INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC BOOKS OR JOURNALS YOU REGULARLY REFER TO FOR STAYING UPDATED?
In today's world, everything comes to you online so I don’t use any books or journals. We have industry bodies and attorneys who make sure we are up to date with industry-related compliance and regulation. With regards to training, motivation and growth, I prefer to follow other industry-specific thought leaders and coaches (especially international names) on social media to bring a different perspective and creative edge and confirm if I am on the right track with trends and coaching.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE READING FOR PERSONAL GROWTH WITH READING FOR BUSINESS PURPOSES?
Reading for business is usually done during the early mornings over coffee. I set aside this time for content creation, creativity and learning. Reading for personal growth will be in the evenings. I haven’t picked up a book since I wrote my own, Thoughtonomy, although I have reread this one a few times to remind myself of some of the key concepts. I’ve just bought The Art of War by Sun Tzu, which I have been meaning to read for some time.

PEOPLE
MY STORY
We get to know Bruce Rowe, a resident of Umhlanga and a business entrepreneur. He talks a bit about his business journey and the sources of his inspiration.
I make many key life decisions based on this vision, and I measure my success based on the extent to which I am achieving my vision
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
After graduating from university, I worked in the financial services industry in Jersey and London which afforded me the opportunity to travel extensively. I met my wife, Tracey, in London and we moved back to SA together where we got married and had two boys. Most of our work career was in Johannesburg, and after a four-year stint in Dubai, we moved to Umhlanga in 2018.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO EMBARK ON YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY?
When I was 18 years old, my mum bought the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and I’m sure that gave me some inspiration! Now, my 18-year-old son is going to one of his conferences next month! When I was growing up, I had some exposure to entrepreneurs and knew I would embark on an entrepreneurial journey at some stage. After equipping myself with an MBL and some failed side hustles, I knew it was time to give my all to a life of entrepreneurship.
CAN YOU SHARE AN EXPERIENCE THAT SHAPED YOUR PATH AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?
In 2005, I met the founder of Mpowered and acquired the business. At that stage, we provided
B-BBEE consulting services, but there were two things that interested me. First, I saw potential in some software we had developed. The other was the Enterprise Development component of the B-BBEE Codes as I felt it would expose us to a world of business opportunities within the SMME sector.
After building up a book of corporate advisory clients, my key priority was to pivot the business from selling hours to selling recurring annual software licence fees. We invested all earnings into building a software development team. Fortunately, the pivot was a success and we transitioned from a consulting business to a software business.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACED? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
By 2014, with revenue doubling year-on-year, we made some bad decisions around scaling our sales team. We also made an ill-informed decision about changing our tech stack, the technology used to create applications. From 2015 to 2018, I was living in Dubai with an objective to expand our business outside of SA. I came up with great new product ideas that I imposed on a team that didn’t have the capacity to execute. I also hadn’t established a robust operating system for the business before leaving so we were operating on autopilot. I learnt the importance of building a business with annual recurring income, a saving grace for us.
WWW.THEUMHLANGAMAGAZINE.CO.ZA | 59 PEOPLE
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? WHAT MILESTONES HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR?
Through my involvement in Entrepreneurs Organisation (EO), I attended a course on Personal Purpose and an EO leadership conference in Turkey where I learnt about the importance of having, and hence established, a clear vision of my successful self. I make many key life decisions based on this vision, and I measure my success based on the extent to which I am achieving my vision.
I am now helping established entrepreneurs implement our operating system of choice, EOS. I am also the founder of Fred, an AI and techenabled solution that seeks to give over one million high school students the opportunity to learn about and experience entrepreneurship.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS?
Business and personal decisions should be made based on vision, purpose and values. Commit to keeping your business as simple as possible and stay in your lane as much as possible. Establish an environment of accountability immediately. You are not the only person who can run your business well - make sure you have more trust in what your team is capable of. Finally, don’t retain mediocre people in your business.
It can be lonely out there, so surround yourself with entrepreneurs you can learn from. Your most important asset isn’t going to be your balance sheet - it’s going to be your health and those around you.

How Effective CEOs Shape Their Organisation's Success
The most vital task of a CEO is to become the facilitator to enable others to perform. This often means that the most challenging thing for them is to let go of the day-to-day running of the business.
The CEO needs to do what only the CEO can do, which is:
1. To envision the future, clarify the organisation’s purpose and create the conditions for people to connect passionately with the business.
2. To build an organisation of psychological safety, to enable learning and avoid preventable failures.
3. To ensure all stakeholders are receiving the right message in a consistent way.
The CEOs need to deliver shareholder return on investment, driving growth and profitability. This starts with clearly defined goals backed by:
1. A financial plan which includes the seven levers of growth – Selling Price, Sales Volumes, Cost of Sale, Expenses, Debtor Days, Creditor Days, Work in Progress.
2. The strategic focus and a plan to deliver on the goal commitment. This requires an allocation of finite and often competing resources.
• Time – where will you, your team and the organisation spend most of your time?
• People – what are people's capacity and capability needed?
• Money – growth drains cash flow. How should the organisation's money be allocated?
3. Building capacity. What technological processes will be needed to build and develop organisational capacity like products, systems and technology?
The strategic plan needs to focus on and be clear about these competencies and the seven levers of financial growth.
Leader lead thy self
1. Be clear on your own sense of purpose. It’s difficult to build your presence in an organisation unless you stand for something meaningful yourself.
2. Unlearn some of the stuff that served you well in the past. For example, being the subject matter expert. You will need to let go of the need to control outcomes. As a CEO, it’s no longer your job to have all the answers.
3. Become curious, you don’t know what you don’t know. Have a real thirst, be inquisitive and have a passion for the business and customer experience.
4. Be comfortable making decisions even when they will not be popular. Have the courage to trust your instinct and do what is right.
5. Do less and be more. Your ability to influence is not driven by what you do, it is driven by your presence, the way you engage, how you show up and the environment you create around you.
6. It's lonely at the top, don’t surround yourself with “yes men”. You are going to have to be able to perform in the storm. Hire a coach. Have people available to you who challenge you and force you out of your own comfort zone and narrative.
Understand that the reputation and brand of the organisation is pinned on visible leadership. The CEO is the heart centre of the brand - the culture, the energy and the company’s performance.

Refreshed & Re-Styled Transform your tresses with Hair on Edge
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
Sometimes, a change is just what you need. A new hairstyle can do wonders for your self-esteem and confidence, and the team at Hair on Edge knows just how to make you feel like a brand-new person. Amy and I, needing a change, got to spend the day with and be pampered by this amazing team.
Seeking to refresh and lighten the blonde highlights in her hair, Amy and Alex got started with a consultation. They planned out the sections to be lightened and how much of a trim Amy needed. While they were busy, Odelle and I got started with figuring out what we were doing with my hair. I love red hair so, together, we came up with lighting a section of my hair to create a contrast of light and dark red tones.
She began by sectioning my hair in front and applying foils, ensuring there was no bleach applied to my scalp. The plan was to pre-lighten the hair and then add colour to
give me a more vibrant shade of red, while the rest of my hair was a deep red. After the foils were applied, I was left to process under heat with a delicious cappuccino to sip on. In the chair next to me, Alex was going to work on Amy’s hair.
Then, it was time to rinse. Seeing my hair a whole different colour was a fabulous shock - I was quite blonde! Endy got to work on meticulously sectioning the lightened area from my darker hair and applied colour to the latter. She then began applying different shades to my roots, while the prelightened hair came last so that the colour would be brighter. As her brush moved, saturating the colour in my hair, I felt the excitement build. Meanwhile, Amy was all done and got an amazing wash at the basin accompanied by a wonderful massage at the end. Alex did a quick trim, cutting away the dead ends and giving Amy’s hair a few layers to complement the colours. Her blonde hair looks brighter, elegant and healthier!
When it was time for my turn at the basin, Endy washed out my hair carefully with an Eleven shampoo and massaged in a miracle hair mask from the same brand. The final reveal - my hair was a vibrant red in the front with the back looking like a slice of red velvet cake! Odelle styled my hair in beautiful waves to show off how the different colours melt into each other.
It was wonderful to spend time with this talented and welcoming team. Both Amy and I felt transformed as we stepped out of the salon.

Heat & Pain
WORDS DR CALEB NAIR
Have you ever suffered from back pain, and the first thing you did was grab your heat pack? As the winter chill sets in, it's natural to want to grab the heat packs, hit the saunas, and crank up the heat. While warmth is comforting and relieving, becoming too cosy and using too much heat on the painful area may negatively affect your muscles and joints.
Heat therapy is a fantastic treatment for minor aches and pains. It opens up your blood vessels, resulting in increased blood circulation. Why do we need this? Well, this effectively decreases the inflammation in the muscle and assists the muscle to heal simultaneously.
So, these are great benefits, but prolonged use of heat can impose some risks and may even result in the adverse effect of relieving your back pain.
POTENTIAL RISKS OF PROLONGED HEAT THERAPY
• Increased Swelling and Inflammation: Heat therapy is not advisable immediately after physical activity, following an injury or during an infection. In such cases, heat can exacerbate pain and impede the healing process when tissues are damaged or infected.
• Decreased Blood Pressure: After a single session of high-temperature environments (saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, etc.), blood pressure drops. People who experience hypotension will feel extreme dizziness upon standing.
• Skin Rash or Burn: Application of a heat source for prolonged periods directly over the skin, without a barrier (cloth, towel, etc.), may cause contact burns. A red/dark, web-like pattern will appear.
HOW TO CORRECTLY UTILISE HEAT THERAPY
In any circumstance of heat application, heat is meant to be used in 10 to 20-minute cycles. By placing heat for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, you achieve the best results of easing muscular back pain. Very limited evidence supports the idea of using heat for more than 30 minutes.
Taking a hot shower and allowing the water or steam to penetrate the skin is far more effective and allows heat to get deeper into muscle tissue. Alternatively, using a towel soaked in hot water is also effective. Always be careful that there is no excess water on your skin’s surface when done.
There are various alternatives to assist your back pain this winter:
1. While it can be challenging to exercise during winter, movement improves blood circulation and reduces the risk of muscle spasms.
2. Avoid long hours on the couch or behind the computer. This will directly affect your posture which will result in tight muscles. Set alarms for every 60 minutes to remind you to get up and move.
3. Use comfortable clothing. Tight clothing may restrict your movement and impede blood circulation. This has a huge impact on your muscles.
The bottom line is that heat therapy is far more effective and cost-friendly than over-the-counter medications. Moderation and listening to your body is key. If the pain persists, and you've exhausted home treatments, visit a healthcare practitioner that will understand your pain and provide holistic solutions to help you.
Never let your pain stop you from being you. Embrace less pain and more living.

THE POWER OF LANDSCAPING
WORDS GRANT GAVIN
When placing your home on the market, first impressions count. A well-landscaped garden can play a big part in creating a lasting first impression with buyers looking at your home.
Landscaping is more than just looking after your garden. It’s a way of extending your home into the outdoors. Deciding what to do will depend on your lifestyle and how you’d like to “use” your outside space.
Here are some essential landscaping tips that add value:
THE LAWN
The increasing need for water-wise gardening has seen a move away from large tracts of green towards “wild” gardens. Sometimes, though, this can be a trade-off if you want to create a green space for children to play or to entertain. If a lawn is a non-negotiable, plant indigenous grasses specific to your area.
A greywater system is a great way to both maintain a lawn and conserve water. On this note, sinking a borehole could be a major benefit that would certainly make your property more attractive to buyers and may even bolster your home’s value.
TREES AND SHRUBS
Trees and shrubs are essential for shade and privacy. In addition, carefully selected shrubs will give you seasonal colour and can separate one garden space from another. Shade trees are essential. When you select trees, bear www.grantgavin.com
in mind that their root systems are an underground mirror of their above-ground shape and size. Don’t plant trees too close to the house as it is highly likely that the roots will, at some point, interfere with the foundations, paving and even the plumbing.
HARD LANDSCAPING
This refers to outdoor features like braais, fire pits and deck areas. Attractive lighting used efficiently in these spaces can be solar-powered and/or connected to your security system. This has the benefit of not just increasing the value of your property but also potentially adding to your home’s security.
Other examples include the fencing you choose to secure your property, pathways, a pool or water feature and other structures like retaining or decorative walls. Because these features are more permanent in nature and more expensive to add or replace, they tend to have more of a direct impact on your home’s value than planting would.
As with everything about owning a property, there will be a cost related to ensuring your landscaped garden is well-maintained. Swimming pools require year-round maintenance, trees and shrubs require trimming, flower beds should be kept neat and weed-free, and large trees must be managed so that branches don’t fall during stormy seasons. It will all be worth it though, especially when it’s time to sell.
Landscaping is more than just looking after your garden. It’s a way of extending your home into the outdoors
