ime flies when you’re living on the North Coast, right? I know that’s not quite the expression but this month marks 20 years since we moved back down to the North Coast, and what an incredible season it has been, but it really has flown by in the blink of an eye.

Lorinda and I are both Durban ‘born and raised’. We did a 10 year stint in Pretoria, which was really good for us, but we found ourselves deciding that a return to the coast to be close to family and friends, along with a lifestyle that seemed better for the kids. Perhaps we were part of the early semigration crowd, but that wasn’t a thing back then, and it was simply the appeal of coastal life that drew us back.

The North Coast was a different place to what it is today. When we arrived in town, development on the Ridge was one third of the size it is now, the new business centre was just developed and was a collection of mostly empty plots while Izinga Estate was only just a concept.

It really was much smaller but with a local Woolworths (Lorinda’s benchmark for places she can stay) just around the corner we saw potential and opportunity in bucket loads. It seemed like loads of other families saw the same and were deciding to relocate. We bought some ‘dirt’, built our family home, raised our kids, and started a business. Friends came easily and we got involved in community projects, giving

back as much as we received. It’s been an exceptional 20 years.

We’ve watched the North Coast grow over our time here. We believe the changes, for the most part, have been great for the people and the district and I can only imagine how young families, considering the move here, must feel when they take it all in. That ‘something special’ is still tangible and the lifestyle on offer today is even better than it was 20 years ago. The ongoing developments and investments in the area continue to position us as one of the top nodes in the country but more than anything else I still find the people and the ethos of the North Coast the most compelling.

I hope you enjoy this edition which highlights many of the current, and new, developments happening on the North Coast. I’d also love to hear from you if you have an interesting story about your journey or relocation to Umhlanga.

Until our Christmas Edition (yep, I said it! We’ve already started planning the bumper edition), enjoy the read and God Bless.

A Grounding Start

Morning is a golden opportunity to set the tone for the hours ahead. By adopting a grounding ritual, you can transform your start into a meaningful and invigorating experience. Here's a guide to help you create a morning routine that will leave you feeling centred and ready to embrace the day ahead.

Set Your Intention

Tonight, before you drift off, decide how you want to wake up tomorrow, set an intention. Whether you write it down or share it with someone, putting your intention into words makes it more tangible and achievable. Set your alarm to ensure you have a full hour before your day begins. This small commitment can make a significant difference in how you start your day.

Mindful Awakening

When your alarm goes off, resist the urge to hit snooze or dive straight on to your phone. Instead, take a moment to notice how your body feels. Stretch gently and breathe deeply. This practise of mindful awakening helps you ease into the day, rather than shocking your system with immediate digital stimulation.

Energising Tunes

Music has the power to uplift and energise. Create a morning playlist with songs that inspire and motivate you. Whether you prefer something calming or upbeat, choose tracks that will influence your mood and energise your spirit.

Move Your Body

only boosts your energy but also helps you become more aware of how your body feels, encouraging mindful observation of your body for the rest of the day.

Cultivate Gratitude

Before diving into your day, take a moment to reflect on what you’re grateful for and identify one thing you’re looking forward to. Gratitude shifts your focus to the positive aspects of your life and creates a sense of anticipation for something enjoyable. Whether it’s a quiet cup of tea or a catch-up with a friend, having something to look forward to makes each day feel more fulfilling.

Nourish Your Body

Feed yourself with a nourishing breakfast or prepare a wholesome meal to take with you. Ensuring your body receives quality nutrition at the start of the day helps you to continue feeding yourself well for the rest of the day, sustaining your energy, focus and mood.

Prepare with Purpose

Finish your morning by getting dressed and ready for the day. By simply taking care of your appearance in a way that makes you feel good, you can elevate your mood and boost your self-esteem. Choose comfortable, well-fitting clothing that makes you feel confident. By integrating these steps into your morning routine, you’ll find yourself starting each day with greater purpose and positivity. Your mornings can become a time of rejuvenation and inspiration— ready to set the stage for a fulfilling day.

Incorporate some form of movement into your morning routine. This doesn’t have to be an intense workout; even gentle stretching, tidying up, or a bit of dancing while you prepare your coffee counts. The goal is to awaken your body and mind through mindful movement. This practise not ANNIE is a wife and mother of two daughters. She supports women by practising online as an Integrative Holistic Counsellor.

Before diving into your day, take a moment to reflect on what you’re grateful for and identify one thing you’re looking forward to

Recently named one of South Africa’s top five affluent suburbs by Lightstone, this suburb has experienced a 40% increase in property values over the past three years. According to Carol Reynolds of Pam Golding Properties, the current market sentiment is positive with already great demand and excitement expressed by investors who attended the private networking event in July.

Westown

About Westown

It’s the new City of the West—a brandnew destination in the making. One that connects people with spaces and experiences, bringing new opportunities to live, work and thrive. A mixed-use property and lifestyle development perfectly positioned off the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, Westown is an active construction site, with the first phase of the development, the retail hub of Westown Square, planned for opening on 27 March 2025.

What inspired the design and choice of amenities?

Westown is designed around the highstreet retail experience of Westown Square which is supported by several interconnected precincts, spaces, and experiences that together form the 100ha Westown Urban Core. Planned as a managed urban environment, Westown will not only integrate with existing outdoor and lifestyle activities and facilities in the area, but enhance them with the rehabilitation of the sugarcane into an active, indigenous green belt.

What can homeowners and prospective buyers expect?

Designed by MDS Architecture in a joint venture with Boogertman + Partners KZN, Westown Square will ‘prioritise the movement of people, social spaces and lifestyle as part of the shopping experience. There’s a strong focus on open spaces, with densely planted walkways, pergola-covered seating, large trees and planter boxes, celebrating the outdoors and setting the tone for Westown as a whole. Key features of Westown Square include the Town Centre and Gardens, the Amphitheatre, children’s play areas and The Barn, will house an eclectic selection of artisanal homeware, art, beauty, fashion, food and beverage outlets, alongside quality restaurants and niche concept eateries. Positioned as the spatial heart of Westown, it provides a permanent niche space for local traders and reflects the high-street design approach that makes Westown unique.

What are the advantages of living in Westown?

Westown’s position on the N3 is a strategic

logistics advantage. The N3, known as the SIP 2, is a logistics and industrial corridor between Durban, Free State and Gauteng that offers investment and development opportunities in easily accessible nodes along it. Keystone and Cato Ridge are two such developing nodes, leaving Shongweni (and Westown) as the next logical, and closest, new development node to the Durban Port. Westown promises opportunities beyond and in support of the logistics landscape, including for new residents, businesses, shops, and recreational activities.

To cater for the 3 000 new residential units being built and occupied in the Westown urban core over the next five to eight years, Westown Square, The Barn, Shongweni Eco Park, Farrier Business Park, The West Private Hospital and the infrastructure upgrades and provisions in and around Westown, pave the way for the next precincts within the New City of the West.

an ongoing commitment to research and education, the Sharks Board offers visitors a chance to dive deeper into the world of one of the ocean's most misunderstood creatures—while keeping our coastlines safe for everyone. The very first shark nets were first deployed in Durban during 1952 with the aim to reduce the risk of shark attacks, this method was later extended to

many of the popular beaches along the KZN coastline during the 1960s.

The KZN Sharks Board (formerly known as the Natal Anti-Shark Measures Board) came into existence in 1964, due to a decline in tourism that was caused by continuous shark attack related incidents occurring in most popular beaches in the province.

FOLLOW THESE TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON:

ALWAYS:

• Swim at protected beaches

• Wear bright coloured swim wear

• Obey lifeguards

• Swim with a crowd/group

DO NOT SWIM:

• During dawn and dusk

• When bleeding

• Under the influence of alcohol or after a big meal

• Alone

• At a beach where swimming is banned

• When and where the water is dirty

They aim to educate members of the public and international visitors about the activities of the organisation, and promote both beach and marine tourism along the coastline of KZN. Some of the education awareness programmes, open to all, include a few comprehensive interactive shows and boat tours. The dynamic audio-visual presentation provides information on subjects such as the sensory biology of sharks and their role as top predators in the marine environment. The show is followed by a shark dissection where you can see the internal

anatomy of one of the ocean’s most feared predators. The early morning Boat Tours show visitors the staff from Operations Department servicing the shark safety gear off Durban’s Golden Mile beaches. The visitors experience and enjoy the sights of Durban which includes the beautiful Moses Mabhida Stadium as you travel through the harbour and out to sea into the rising sun.

Always active, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board is constantly working on projects that focus on both conservation and marine safety. One of their major initiatives aims to reduce the number of shark nets at individual beaches. Since these nets are essentially fishing devices, fewer nets mean fewer animals getting caught. This effort was sparked by a comparison with similar operations in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, where far less shark fishing equipment is used per protected

beach than in KwaZulu-Natal. To further minimise environmental impact, the Sharks Board has introduced drumlines in place of some of the remaining nets. These drumlines, which consist of a shark hook attached to a large anchored float, help protect beaches while reducing the catch of non-threatening marine life, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional nets.

In preparation for the upcoming holiday season, the Shark’s Board is preparing awareness campaigns and urging all beach goers to adhere to the lifeguards instructions by swimming at protected beaches along the KZN coastline. There are 37 protected beaches all the way from Richards Bay in the North down to Port Edward on the South.

Looking at La Lucia Mall's Legacy of Style & Shopping

WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER PHOTOS GRANT PITCHER

Then

When you see the metal monument depicting the birds and fish, you know you’ve arrived at La Lucia Mall. Every visit from my childhood started with me seeing that monument first and I knew we’d be entering the mall next. These memories have stayed with me all these years later and, even though I’m just one person, it is a testament to the lasting impression the mall has had on the community.

La Lucia Mall first opened its doors in 1974 with 45 stores and is a stone’s throw from the Umhlanga beachfront. The mall endeavours to offer a convenient shopping experience for the discerning public. La Lucia Mall now houses 124 retailers and attracts approximately 4.7 million shoppers with 925 free open and 674 paid undercover parking bays including parking facilities dedicated to disabled shoppers and parents with infants and toddlers.

The mall has excellent access from major arterial routes and is close to King Shaka International Airport and major CBD nodes. There are also over 50 schools in this area, and the Virgin Active gym is right on the doorstep, providing the essential services and products to support a live, work, play and learn community. It remains a firm favourite with devoted shoppers from all the East Coast, winning its 13th PMR Diamond Arrow award, coming first place out of all Shopping Centres in KwaZulu-Natal. Notable developments at the mall include the prestigious Kent apartment block, and

the McDonald’s drive-thru last year. This year, the introduction of a new Starbucks and the Africa Padel courts has proven to be a huge hit in this community. The La Lucia courts are the second busiest padel courts in the country. Really worth noting are two of its stores: Silver Cage and Elizabeth's Florist—they have been trading at the mall since opening in October 1974.

Confident and highly experienced, La Lucia Mall’s Centre Manager Vanessa Blevins has been at the helm of La Lucia Mall for over 21 years. Having a great combination of retailers and team which keep up with the ever-changing trends and market demands isn’t an easy feat to accomplish. In fact, it takes a great deal of planning, years of restructuring, a hard-working team and a leader determined to see the mall be the very best it can be. “To retain the loyalty of shoppers a mall’s retailers have to be relevant to the market it serves,” Vanessa explains. “We have a great team and we work very closely to ensure things run smoothly most of the time.”

Fifty years is a significant milestone for any person, business or organisation, especially for a commercial shopping centre in this dynamic economy, “We hope that La Lucia Mall continues to

Nownurture the spirit of our shoppers from all the generations we have been been serving for the past 50 years, from Baby Boomers to Gen X to Millenials and Gen Z’s, one shopping experience at a time,” Vanessa adds.

To celebrate this great achievement, the mall will be giving away R50 000 in gift cards and other prizes. From 19 September to 8 November, you can find a commemorative activation in Centre Court and the first 50 shoppers who spend R500 daily in the mall and enter the competition will have a 100% chance to win one of 50 daily giveaways. The Grand Draw announcing the Gift Card prize winners and the Main Event to celebrate the mall’s milestone birthday, will take place on Saturday 9 November at 10:00 a.m. in Centre Court. The MC for the event is media personality, radio and TV presenter and actress, Vanessa Marawa, there will be additional giveaways on the day for those who attend, so make sure you’re present!

The mall also invites the community to share their memories of La Lucia Mall, and stand a chance of winning one of five R1000 gift cards. Stay tuned to the mall’s Facebook and Instagram pages for more information.

Grant Pitcher takes us through his steps, tips and tricks on how to make your home shine through photography.

WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER PHOTOS GRANT PITCHER

This edition, we’re doing our home feature a little differently. Instead of dissecting the architecture and interior design of a home, we’re looking at how you actually capture these details through photography with renowned photographer Grant Pitcher. I always use the images of a home to inspire the articles and describe the details I write about, so it’s interesting to go beyond and see what goes into capturing the best home photos.

Getting to work happens before you even get to the location, “There’s actually a lot of pre-

planning required. Setting up the timing is a factor as we need to work around my schedule, the client being available as well as the homeowner being ready to allow us into their home,” Grant explains. While on-site, he assesses the location to determine key elevations, unique features, and lighting conditions to plan the shoot around. He then opens up all of the doors, curtains, blinds, and switches on all of the lights. “If it’s a complete home showcase, the weather is key as well as knowing on which side of home the sun will rise or set. This is important to have key architectural features illuminated by the sun at the right time of day,” he outlines.

He tries to avoid photographing residences in grey weather, but if he can’t, Grant makes the most out of it with his equipment and catching that five‑minute window where even clouds can give a blue background for the photos! “I end up with a magical textural backdrop of cloud detail—to me it’s far more favourable than a plain blue sky!” he exclaims. Each room in a house

is unique, and you have to change the way you see each one to capture their different details. Also, depending on the client and the purpose of the shoot, some characteristics may take precedence over others, “For example, an architect wants to have the flow and wide open spaces shown, but an interior decorator would need to show how the furniture and soft finishes come together cohesively and show off the beauty of the home,” Grant elaborates.

Where possible, he tries to capture the whole room, which includes complete pictures of furniture, all of that rug beneath the coffee table, the entire breakfast nook in the kitchen and that bulkhead above the dining table.

Achieving this can prove difficult in smaller spaces, “So then I intentionally zoom in a bit to show more detail and how different elements tie together,” he clarifies. “This also depends on the client. So, if it's a flooring company the tripod is low to the ground, and high as possible for ceiling installers.”

ones that work best. “Shooting coastal homes with sea views, I like to be able to get this in the early afternoon as the sun is at the appropriate angle to bring the blue out of the ocean and there is still plenty of sunlight in the foreground.”

Even when we take selfies, lighting and angles play a huge part in capturing the desired image. With a home, you got to go as bright as possible, “It is important to always have all the lights on... even in broad daylight. I feel that when something has a function it must perform that function. Similarly, I turn on ceiling fans too,” he explains.

Having all the lights on gets the home ready for ‘blue hour’. “This is a photography term for that 20 minutes of twilight where everything outside goes deep blue and the interior equates in the same quality of beautiful light and results in a pleasing and often dramatic image for the viewer.” When we’re talking angles, Grant finds that when photographing architecture, 90 and 45 degrees are the

A top tip for capturing all those shots where you want to get as much as possible into your photos is using a wide angle lens, “Having the right equipment is key,” he states. “Then make sure the home is well-dressed by putting away personal items as much as possible, declutter kitchens and bathrooms, and remove the pool cleaner!”

We have some gorgeous homes on the East Coast and Grant agrees that shooting these homes are special, “There is a uniqueness about them and we have a number of residential estates along the coast so to tie in the ocean views within the landscapes really enhances the imagery. I do enjoy the contemporary, modern and linear architecture that we're seeing in our region these days too,” he expresses fondly.

excellent quality of life on offer that is driving investors in their droves to look seriously at Cyprus.

Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries—especially homes right on or near to The Med. As an expat, you are not restricted to buying only in Special Designated Areas (SDAs), nor prescribed to stay in the country every year to retain your residency. Not only will your asset generate income for you, but you have complete peace of mind that the property purchase is legitimate and your ownership is guaranteed.

Welcome to The HotBox, one of the latest editions to uMhlanga's short-term rental scene! Launched in 2022, by owners Kirsten Brann and Shaun Botsis, the four-sleeper unit boasts the latest modern finishes and a private rooftop offering breathtaking views from eMdloti to the City. It’s a five minute walk to The Village, an Uber to the Arch, and a 15-minute drive to King Shaka International Airport.

The centralised location, proximity to businesses and compact space surprises and is a delight for guests!

Inspired by the property’s unique location and elevation, the idea of a private rooftop experience was born. In a property market defined by windows, balconies and sliding doors; this is a space designed to be free from the intrusion of neighbouring guests, yet close enough to the action was

envisaged. Building commenced in March 2020, days before lockdown, a risky time financially given the unknown future of the hospitality industry. After many sleepless nights, they committed to throwing all effort behind the project based on our belief in this unique offering! Four home-loan extensions, multiple lockdowns, floods, and a baby later, The HotBox was launched in early 2022. “The sheer relief we felt when receiving our first booking enquiry was

They cater for a discerning traveller, looking to escape the traditional hotel experience

indescribable; understanding that likeminded people found the space just as beautiful as we did brought us much joy!” they recall.

When someone leaves the comfort of their own home, it should be for the promise of something better and more exciting than their traditional comfort zone!

With that mantra in mind, no costs were spared in finishing, furnishing, and convenience; knowing full well that they would realise that investment was worth it through repeat business. “Once we had identified our primary guest, choosing our

materials and furnishings became easy!” they explain. They cater for a discerning traveller, looking to escape the traditional hotel experience. Whether that be through business travel, or a weekend getaway, they cater for people looking for an experience, not just a bed to sleep in.

They invested in high thread count bedding, luxury wallpapers and modern appliances. Understanding the growing trend in remote work, there is a large workspace with multiplugs that include USB chargers. All the small details add up, leaving guests feeling relaxed in their “home away from home”. Don’t believe

everything you read on the Internet. Running a successful AirBNB is not a form of passive income, it’s hard work and requires large upfront investment! Problems arise that are expensive to fix, as is the nature of property ownership.

“Recent water availability issues resulted in us investing in tanks and pumps to ensure our guests were not negatively

impacted,” they elaborate. They also switched to solar power to maintain guests’ comfort. Going the extra mile secured them Guest Favourite status on AirBNB (on top of a Superhost accolade!).

“Our top decorating tip—abandon Pinterest! The content is mostly American, which is very frustrating when sourcing products locally,” they advise. Instead, you

can go into a store and work with what is available to save yourself disappointment. And most importantly, have a very clear idea of WHOM it is you are trying to attract. Design with the guest in mind, not the location! “Guests can visit the Lighthouse, they don’t need photos of it in their lounge,” they state.

MY STORY

From growing a firm from a kitchen desk, Annabella Da Costa is an accomplished attorney, conveyancer, and notary public, who founded Da Costa Inc. She continues to inspire others with her commitment to excellence and personal growth.

You can do anything you set your mind to. Be thirsty for knowledge and experience.

Can you share a bit about yourself and what led you to a career in law?

I had a friend whose father was a lawyer and used to hear all the interesting cases he was handling. I must say, law is a fascinating although stressful career to pursue, for sure. Law was actually the second thing I ended up studying as I didn’t trust my academic ability when I finished school. A person changes a lot when they finish school so I finally ended up pursuing law as a career when I was about 20-years-old.

What inspired you to pursue property law and conveyancing?

When I was about 24-years-old, my career path came to a T-junction. I was offered a position in a large firm to handle divorce and family law matters and I was offered a position in a conveyancing department in another firm. Given I wanted to be a working mum and wanted to work with happy clients, conveyancing seemed like the best

option. I quickly found that I loved the opportunity to have a positive impact on my clients and my efficiency really helped them.

Starting as a legal secretary and later founding Da Costa Inc. must have had its challenges, how did you overcome them?

Funnily enough, being a legal secretary and bookkeeper actually assisted me greatly when I qualified

and some years later opened up my firm. It was as if everything I had done in my career previously was done so that I could get to this point. Sure, it was still very stressful opening up a firm and hoping that people would support but I was truly blessed in that regard and was busy from day one. Now, 15 years on, I simply love my work and the team I have built but never forget that I started working out of my kitchen.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life and career, and how have they shaped your approach in your field?

I think that Rory Ashton, who works in my team, has been one of the biggest influences in my career. He is the most amazing human whose outlook on life and work ethic is incredible. He treats everyone with the same respect and kindness, nothing is ever too much of a hassle.

What key lessons from your property law career continue to guide you today?

Be honest, kind, and understanding, and efficient to clients and colleagues. These four traits will draw people to you. They will respect you and they will feel secure that you are helping them in a very stressful process.

Looking back, what are you most proud of in your career and business?

I'm proud of a few things. One is the culture of the business where we are a very authentic firm full of kind yet ambitious people and secondly, I have grown it from a single desk in my kitchen to four branches with around 30 staff members.

Do you have any advice for women aspiring to enter the legal field?

You can do it. You can do anything you set your mind to. Be thirsty for knowledge and experience. Work hard, it will pay off. Be kind and be honest, even if that gets you into trouble. People will trust you.

Exploring Ireland

It’s easy to conjure up stereotypes when thinking about Ireland— leprechauns, brogues, rainbows and pints—but the country offers so much more than that, with something for every type of traveller.

I was lucky enough to visit Ireland for two weeks in July, and it was truly the best holiday I’ve ever had. It may not be a typical ‘Euro summer’ destination, but it’s

a beautiful, vibrant country with endless opportunities to create special memories.

Visas and Travel Tips

Fortunately, I was one of the last few South Africans who could enter Ireland without a visa. If you’re blessed with the infamous Green Mamba, you must apply for an Irish visa via VFS Global. It’s important to note that the Republic of Ireland (with Dublin as its capital) is part of the EU, while Northern

Ireland (with Belfast as its capital) is part of the UK.

I booked my flights roughly three months in advance. There are numerous airlines that will take you from Durban to Dublin (check if you require transit visas if you’re travelling through different countries to get there!). My total travel time was about 18 hours, which is manageable with lots of movies, reading and attempts to sleep.

Once I sat in my window seat, I was extremely excited to start my Irish frolic!

The Weather

Dublin welcomed me with its iconic grey skies and green parks. Ireland’s “summer” weather is… mild, with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 23°C during the day. It’s also volatile—one moment you’re sweating under the sun, the next you’re drenched from the rain—

“The one thing that really stuck out to me is how friendly and lively the Irish are there is always a good vibe wherever you go.”

so always have a raincoat on hand. With that being said, a little rain never hurt anyone and didn’t stop me from making the most of my time there.

Accommodation and Transport

I stayed with family during my holiday but Dublin has many great accommodation options (booking.com is your friend here!). Also, don’t be afraid to venture outside the city. I particularly loved the quaintness of Terenure and the seaside towns of Dún Laoghaire, Dalkey (Bono’s hometown) and Howth (the place for delicious fish and chips).

Dublin is very safe and extremely accessible. The transport system is fantastic, and there is always a bus or train to get you where you need to go (even across the whole country or into Northern Ireland). There is no need to rent a car, but if you plan to explore Dublin or other parts of the country, consider buying a Leap Card from your closest Contra to take full advantage of the efficient public transport.

Discovering Dublin

Whether you’re a history buff, castle lover or whiskey connoisseur, Dublin is a bubbly pot filled to the brim with unique things to do and see. A few classic attractions are Stephen’s Green (a large park with colourful flowers, ponds, and elegant swans), Grafton Street (one of Europe’s busiest streets, decorated with shops and enthusiastic buskers), St Patrick’s Cathedral, and Dublin Castle.

A sightseeing tour is a great way to learn more about a city, and what better way than in a double-decker vintage bus whilst enjoying afternoon tea? We spent a few hours on the ‘Vintage Tea Trip’ with a guide who shared lesser-known facts about Dublin as we drove through the busy streets. Did you know the lion featured in the original MGM Studios logo was from the Dublin Zoo?

Here are a few of my favourite activities and landmarks:

Temple Bar: This bustling area features pub after pub, but a stop at The Temple Bar Pub is a must. There’s live music, people dancing, and Guinness flowing!

Trinity College: The grand buildings of this university are a sight to behold. The college is home to the Book of Kells (a ninth-century gospel manuscript that is on display) and the Old Library (a high-ceiling room filled with bookshelves and a huge hanging globe).

Guinness Storehouse: You don’t need to love ‘the black stuff’ to appreciate the process and history behind creating the popular pint. If you book the STOUTie Experience, you can sip on a Guinness with your face ‘printed’ on it! The top level of the storehouse also has a bar with a panoramic view of Dublin.

A Taste of Irish Culture

With so much to do in Ireland, I focussed on experiencing traditional Irish culture, which led to my most cherished memories from the trip. Opened in 1798, Johnnie Fox’s is the highest pub in Ireland. The exterior, decorated with flowers, looks straight out of a storybook. Inside, you’ll find little trinkets, old newspaper articles, and a lively atmosphere with a band playing Irish folk music (this is also where I ate the most delicious meal of the holiday). Another experience I recommend is Taylors Irish Night at Taylors Three Rock. You’re served a three-course dinner complete with an Irish coffee, followed by a spectacular interactive performance. The traditional Irish dancing and singing blew me away. Seeing the professional dancers do their fast-paced jig on the tables right in front of us is a moment I will never forget!

Getaway to Galway

About three hours from Dublin, on the west coast of Ireland, is Galway. We decided to spend a night in this charming city, although I wish we stayed longer! Galway is known for its old pubs, live music, various local stores and the ‘Galway Girl’ statue (cue Ed Sheeran…). It is also the home of the Claddagh ring—the true Celtic way of displaying your relationship status— which you can get custom-made at one of the various jewellery stores. While on the west, I had to tick off a bucket list item of mine: the Cliffs of Moher.

No images or words could do this landscape justice. Magnificent green cliffs rise over 120 metres from the perfectly blue Atlantic waters for almost 14 kilometres, creating a sight unlike any other. This is a busy attraction so try to get there early (and on a sunny day, if possible). You can also marvel at the Cliffs of Moher from the ocean on a boat cruise, or take a ferry to the nearby Aran Islands where local farmers still speak Gaelic.

With so much history, an electrifying atmosphere, friendly people and breathtaking scenery, Ireland’s unique concoction of attractions makes it a oneof-a-kind destination.

Healthy Skin with Beyond Skin & Emporiderm

Every lady out there loves her self-care routine, and even more so when she spoils herself and goes to the experts. Well, we were lucky enough to experience a luxurious treatment filled morning curated by dermatologist, Dr Bhavna Singh, founder of Beyond Skin and owner of the EmporiDerm Medical and Aesthetic practice. This establishment houses various professionals in different fields. All your self-care needs under one roof… yes, please!

As Natasha and I arrived, we were greeted by not only many friendly smiles from reception but also big windows offering gorgeous sea views. Before heading through to start any treatments, we were led to the big waiting area where we filled out extensive forms. After an initial skin analysis by Dr Bhavna Singh and Bibi Ayesha, it was determined that my skin would benefit more from a chemical peel and Natasha’s would benefit

from the microneedling due to having scarring. My morning comprised my very first underarm laser treatment and a much needed chemical peel facial. The therapist, Bibi Ayesha from Laser Skin Solutions, sat me down in her room gave me a very insightful introduction to the procedure and took me through the step-by-step to ensure I understood the treatment but also felt completely relaxed. Being my first time, I expected it to be a bit painful… but she uses the award-winning Soprano Ice machine which has a hot and cold sensation due to the laser gun head staying at a negative degree to keep the area cold. And just like that… I felt no pain at all, so no need for a few nerves at all.

While I got treatment one, Natasha had a private skin consultation with Specialist Dermatologist, Dr Bhavna Singh, which involved a very in-depth and lengthy discussion about Natasha's skin concerns. The thorough examination included a mole check, a treatment plan including

scripted medications, an appointment for further procedures, and a sunscreen to promote sun protection and skin cancer awareness. This consultation allowed Natasha to understand her skin and to start her personalised skin journey. Afterwards, Natasha was ready for her first microneedling procedure to help promote the healing of her face from acne scarring. While Natasha was under Bibi’s care, I gave my face some TLC with a chemical peel. This treatment helps to brighten the skin, and reduce pigmentation damage and active flare-ups… which I was experiencing.

Together, Natasha and I had a wonderful experience and we can’t thank Dr Bhavna Singh and the lovely ladies enough for taking great care of our skin.

A Taste of Coastal Sophistication Marbella Grand Cafe

Situated in The Pearls Mall, overlooking the Whalebone Pier and the Umhlanga Rocks promenade, Marbella Grand Cafe is a reflection of the area’s laid-back yet stylish and up-market coastal vibe. With spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas, and an events venue, the décor strikes a balance between modern elegance and casual beachside comfort, with natural textures and light tones that give the space a warm, welcoming feel. We were led to a cosy corner, where Bongani introduced himself and made us feel right at home.

To start off the evening, we were guided to try some of their iconic, Umhlanga-inspired cocktails. The Tropical Margarita was a refreshing twist on the classic drink with coconut and sour tasting notes. A Junebug, which was a firm favourite of the night and the topic for a song search, was a drink that balanced the sweetness from the cherry liqueur with the bitterness from the vodka, gin, and tequila. The Marbellicious with non-alcoholic gin was a delicious mixture, the perfect alternative for those who don’t drink alcohol. To accompany the

cocktails were some of Marbella’s signature appetisers. We aimed to create a variation and the menu was accommodating; we ended up with the lemon pepper squid, chilli karaage chicken wings, and the stuffed champignon. The stuffed champignon really knocked our socks off—the deep fried button mushrooms were filled with sundried tomatoes, spinach, and feta cheese. The lemon pepper squid didn’t disappoint either, crunchy and full of flavour with the chicken wings bringing the spicy elements to the spread.

Before the main course, it was decided that it’s not really a night out in Umhlanga without sushi. Between the classic california rolls and their signature pieces like prawn avalanches, we each got to experience their fresh and delicious sushi selection. Then, it was time for the main course.

We opted for the lobster burger and the creamy piri-piri chicken pasta. Served with penne, red peppers, and spring onion, this dish had us endlessly complementing the kitchen. The dish certainly lived up to its name with a creamy, rich sauce with a coconut undercurrent, tender chicken and a kick of

a brioche bun with a crayfish tail filled centre, the lobster burger was a creative take on how to serve seafood, and the accompanying fresh fries rounded off the dish well.

Enjoying the ambience of the restaurant and present company, we didn’t even notice the sun going down. Of course, no night is over without some sweet treats either! The decadent chocolate brownie, served with smooth vanilla ice cream, and nuts; and the strawberry cheesecake, served with fresh berry coulis, and ice cream as well, provided a perfect ending for a spectacular evening.

Physiotherapy & Anti-ageing

Facial aesthetics are a key focus in anti-ageing, and physiotherapy can play a role in this area as well. Facial muscles, like those in the rest of the body, can weaken and lose tone over time, leading to sagging skin, wrinkles, and a tired appearance. Physiotherapy techniques such as facial exercises, manual lymphatic drainage, and myofascial release can help rejuvenate the face by improving muscle tone, enhancing circulation, and promoting lymphatic drainage. Facial exercises, for instance, target specific muscle groups to lift and tone the face, reducing the appearance of sagging and wrinkles. Manual lymphatic drainage can reduce puffiness and enhance the skin’s natural glow by promoting the removal of toxins and excess fluids. Additionally, myofascial release techniques can relax tense facial muscles, which can soften the appearance of fine lines and contribute to a more relaxed and youthful expression.

Healthy skin is a hallmark of youth, and physiotherapy can support skin health by improving circulation and lymphatic flow. Enhanced circulation ensures that skin cells receive adequate oxygen and nutrients, promoting a healthy complexion and supporting the skin’s natural repair processes. Improved lymphatic flow helps reduce fluid retention and eliminate toxins, leading to clearer and more vibrant skin. Physiotherapy modalities such as massage therapy, dry needling, and certain electrotherapy techniques can be used to stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow, providing

a natural boost to skin health. These treatments can complement other aesthetic procedures, enhancing their effectiveness and supporting longterm skin vitality.

Unlike some aesthetic treatments that rely on invasive procedures or synthetic products, physiotherapy offers a natural, non-invasive approach to anti-ageing. This makes it an attractive option for individuals seeking to maintain or enhance their appearance without the risks or side effects associated with more aggressive interventions. Physiotherapy’s focus on improving the body’s natural function— whether through posture correction, muscle toning, or enhancing circulation—aligns with the principles of holistic health. This approach not only targets the visible signs of ageing but also promotes overall well-being, contributing to a more youthful and vibrant appearance from the inside out. A key advantage of incorporating physiotherapy into an anti-ageing

routine is its ability to support the longevity of aesthetic results. For example, improving posture and muscle tone through physiotherapy can prolong the effects of cosmetic procedures such as Botox or dermal fillers. Moreover, regular physiotherapy sessions can prevent the recurrence of age-related issues such as poor posture or facial muscle sagging, helping individuals maintain a youthful appearance over time.

Physiotherapy is emerging as a valuable modality in the field of anti-ageing aesthetics. Its ability to improve posture, enhance muscle tone, support skin health, and promote a natural, non-invasive approach to maintaining a youthful appearance makes it an ideal complement to traditional aesthetic treatments. By integrating physiotherapy into their anti-ageing routine, individuals can achieve more holistic and sustainable results, supporting both their physical appearance and overall well-being.
