Precious moments spent with her mother in her child hood, when her mother wove magic with her dexterous fingers, and sowed purses and artifacts out of bandhani to gift to friends and family gave rise to MOMENTS. Riona Biyani runs a thriving business where she freely expresses her creativity making beautiful and intriguing items that you can buy to gift your loved ones, or buy to decorate your home to make it look prettier. The ambitious Riona started earning her living at the age of 13. Success always met all that she did. “There are no short cuts. You really have to make sure you have to work hard and then nobody stops you. Ambitious she may be;
Face Mag | 23
Face Mag | 24
however, it does not blind her to the needs of her family. Riona has created a beautiful work life balance for herself. Her passion for her work remains at MOMENTS when done with the day at work, only to spend marvelous Moments at home with her 2 children and her very accommodating husband. She is all praise for them. “I am lucky to have a great partner, extremely lucky to have great family support. My kids are very understanding. I cut off from everything when I am at home. One of the reasons I have 2 phones. My kids are the future of tomorrow. I need to give them the right culture now.” Although an independent and strong individual that she is, woman’s liberation or feminism as an ideology is not what she lives by. When at work Riona is unstoppable. I wondered what she further saw for herself. “Well I intend doing some good work for the next 4 or 5 years, and then go and settle down
somewhere in a quiet and tranquil place. And yes go back to studying and learning.” Deeply Spiritual, the lovely Riona has a terrific regime for herself. She wakes up at 3.20 and prays for an hour and a half. Goes to the gym. Has her vegan protein shake. Then ofcourse spends time with her family before she starts her day at MOMENTS. After a hard day’s work Riona wants only to go back home, put her feet up on the couch, be surrounded by her husband and 2 delightful children and soak it all in. This rejuvenates those tired muscles and she is all set the next day to spend meaningful Moments at MOMENTS. Face Mag | 25

ndian Architecture and style is rooted in history and culture, not forgetting religion. The style is bewitching, and leaves you enthralled. We Indians have carried on this saga till date with the multitude of designers who have left us awestruck with their flow of creativity. The interior designers and decorators today have an innate flair for color, architecture, arrangements and textiles. Akash Mehta and Poonam Mehta have won the hearts of their clients by understanding their needs, and steering them to a favorable outcome Face Mag | 26
Face Mag | 27
They have brought to their work dynamism and inventiveness with great assiduity. Poonam with her astounding sense of designing, and Akash with his expertise in Lighting Design give birth to exceptional and wondrous designs. Poonam hails from Chennai. She knew from young that she had a penchant for designing. With time, and education her designs blossomed. Face Mag | 28
A graduate of the Prestigious University of Arts, London, Poonam has worked with well acclaimed and esteemed names such as Talati & Panthaky, where she garnered valuable and precious experience. Akash and Poonam met whilst building the mall on the lines of a small town called Burgamo in Italy and decided to tie the knot. AMPM is their brainchild. They launched Gauri Khan’s Design store.
Face Mag | 29
Face Mag | 30
Moving to Poona was a big step and starting AMPM even bigger. They took the leap of faith which yielded results. Both realized that there was a need to create unique, custom made designs that reflect the personalities and desires of their clients. AMPM has created some very breathtaking, visually appealing, and intriguing projects that range from luxury boutiques, corporate offices to residential bungalows and commercial spaces. "Good lighting is a gift to any space - it can uplift the elements and highlight the right character of the space," says Akash. Akash has been on various high scale projects.
Face Mag | 31
Akash with his experience creates a great visual impact to give us a fully realized experience. In short he creates Magic!
I was now browsing through their coffee table book. The book is used mostly as a presentation to the clients.
They come across different types of customers and I wished to know how do they work with them? Poonam Mehta says, “We are truly service providers. We give the client exactly what he wants. There is no pattern, no concept etc. We do minimalistic, dramatic, we do classic and that is what keeps us excited. We look at a home that stays at least 30 years. We don’t follow a trend.”
I liked the idea and what I saw in the book. Firstly, the book was tastefully done. ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ holds true here. One needed no explanation nor an assurance of what AMPM can offer its clients as interior decorators. The AMPM team blend creativity with pragmatism to provide a design that is both sustainable and manageable.
“The home project should reflect the client's personality and not the designing style. That’s probably the reason every project of ours looks so different from each other… the reason being every client is different!!”
Poonam and Akash are going back to the days of aristocracy where every item in your home has your mark! From tapestry to crockery to clothes etc.
Face Mag | 32
Face Mag | 33
“So we create a crest for the house, and every crest goes on the furniture, on your tapestry etc. You become a brand.” A lot of thought goes into this process. It is the experience that counts. This is Uber Luxury for you leaving you with a signature style and character. Detailing is their strength. It is this effort that they put into all that they do that establishes Face Mag | 34
a long term relationship with their clients. “Your showroom must make the sale before you do.” says Poonam about designing Retail Spaces. In Hospitality they designed a restaurant in Norway. Rustic and flirtatious with comfortable chairs and lighting that makes you want to linger on.
Akash Mehta states, “We are a very young team of designers, the AMPM family striving hard to make a mark in luxury interiors – giving bespoke interior lighting, and also each project we style with the right art artifacts, personlising beddings, curated sculptures that enhance the house and also talks about the client’s personality.” Akash and Poonam Mehta are very approachable. It is their ingrained culture. And it is this culture that keeps them ticking round the clock! Some of the awards they have earned: AMPM Designs is accredited with a number of accolades and awards. • Architecture & Interior Excellence Award for luxury residence • Savvy Women Achievement Award- interiors • Multiple appreciation in print media. • Foaid Excellence in Architecture and Design • International lighting Design awards Face Mag | 35

here was no way I was going to do a telephonic, or send a questionnaire to Sameer Belvalkar. One of the best fashion photographers in the country; and yes worthy of his work, Sameer Belvalkar and I met at the J.W Marriot late afternoon. We broke the ice over a cup of coffee. I rattled on letting him know who I am. 16 years in the profession here was a man completely down to earth, unabashed as he spoke without mincing words, and honestly. He traversed the path to be where he is.
Face Mag | 66
Sameer Belvalkar
Face Mag | 67
A wasted year in commerce, a degree in organic chemistry, a failed attempt at an entrance exam for Mass Communication, and then an MBA, he followed his heart and most importantly his friends to finally realize his dreams of being one of the best photographers. Photography happened when his little sister picked up a DSLR lying at home and went up to the ‘tekdi’ a hillock
Face Mag | 68
with her dog to click photos. Extreme criticism from Sameer of how bad her pictures were (there was an ulterior motive) led her to giving up the DSLR which he happily took for himself to prove to her how much better he is than her.
....
‘ ‘S i b l i n g R i v a l r y m a d e h i m o n e of the best Potographers in the country’’
Winning over the little sister was not the goal. The camera became his best friend. It travelled with him where ever he went. Sameer Belvalkar clicked relentlessly. He had neither the time nor the money to go through a formal training. He selftaught himself by reading, watching tutorials, and assisting a photographer for 6 months. He became a press photographer shooting page 3 parties, open man holes, trees that have fallen down etc. He never lost an opportunity to click pictures. His passion ruled. He became his own best critic.
“I love the medium, the process of shooting, adding creativity to it. Then getting it developed, printed and not even knowing what I am going to get. The whole thrill of the entire process is far more than what I actually shoot. An artistic bent of mind, and love for photography led him to leave a job paying Rs.13,000 at a time when he really needed the money. Face Mag | 69
Face Mag | 70
He took a leap of faith! “Everything I have done has been via my gut feeling. My whole career is gut feeling, and also the ability to take the risk even if it was giving up Rs.13,000. Giving that up for a middle class family was a big thing. I had to take this leap of faith and let go of one thing for the other thing to work out for me. I still had my academics in place, and am a street survivor; so let’s take a chance, I told myself! The crucial question now played on my mind. I wanted to know more about the media world, the many young ones aching to become models and actors, especially young girls; the many boys who are trying their hands at photography. What did he have to say of the existing culture? “It’s a world of deception!” “With everyone wanting to look beautiful, that is how lots of my business runs; I take great pride in the fact that I can make them look good.” What about you? Do you edit a lot? “NO! I edit the least! Say 5 percent! 90 percent of my work is minimalistic.
Face Mag | 71
It is about using less light, less makeup, hairstyling and the place where I shoot. 90 percent of the job is done on the screen. One has to decide whether you want to be a photographer, or a photo editor.” “As a photographer I work with my client’s psyche, confidence and selfesteem. I flatter a little. I flirt a little. So when they start feeling good about themselves the photographs are only a by-product.” Face Mag | 72
It is the digital age and most of the so called photographers take to editing the photos. What do you have to say to that?
“My message to the young aspiring photographers is decide whether you want to be a photographer or a photo editor. There is nothing wrong in being photo editors; however, as mentioned 90 percent of your job is done on the screen.”
I instinctively felt he is one who loves the wild life and so asked him…Has not the wilderness beckoned? You seem like one who loves the outdoors! “My first instinct was to become a wild life photographer. In touch with nature and animals. I also realized I need to earn money. Wild life photography does not pay you much. It is my retirement plan. I had gone with my pictures to Nat Geo; however, they said their photographers come with 50 years of experience.” To satisfy his creative side Sameer packs up on and off and goes off to the jungles to absorb the wild life on his very expensive lenses bought specially for this event. It was nearing his meeting time. It was a wrap up for us also!

er calling started at the age of 12 when she began playing basketball in class 7. It took her to the Nationals. Netball happened later in college at the camp of CWG 2010. Prachi Tehlan was the captain of the team for 4 years where the team won their first medal in the South Asian Beach Games 2011. This certainly was an achievement that left her feeling proud and worthy. Her Nani and mother were both active in sports and they were her inspiration. Priyanka chopra she says with her terrific journey in the film industry has left a lasting impress. Prachi Tehlan started her journey with Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus which was followed by Ikyawaan. Television is close to her heart as it gave her a learning curve.

I wanted to know which of the cultures did she prefer, the television or the film industry? She said, “The Film industry is more creative. Every scene is practiced and rehearsed, beautifully designed, created and framed.”
Her roots she says she will never forget. However, she sees herself doing films and web series. So was she working on any films presently? “The focus now is on the promotions of the film Mamangam, one of the biggest projects done by me, which is releasing on the 21st of November 2019. Preparation for the release of my Telugu film Trishanku is also on.”
Face Mag | 78
In all her busy schedule Prachi Tehlan makes time to play basketball whenever she gets the time. Must say it is very commendable. “I love playing sports- Basketball, swimming, squash and badminton. Functional training and a good work out is a part of my regime. I love dancing … I think I need to dance more often.” Being an athlete she feels it is necessary for all to keep a regime to stay fit through out.

“One hour of any physical workout of your interest is very important in a day. It will keep you happy, make you feel more positive thus being more productive at work. Have 2 glasses of hot water waking up and 7-8 glasses in a day. It will help your skin glow.” Every actor brings his/her style to the screen. I was curious to know hers! “Hands on experience,” she said. Prachis is a director’s actor and has learnt along the way in front of the camera. Roles in Aarzoo in Diya aur Baaati Hum, Susheel in Ikyawann and Unnimaya in Mamankam are responsible for her growth as an individual and as an actor. Any challenging role, adrenaline pumping is what she is waiting for to experiment with.

“I don't feel I am an actor who is very restrictive. I am fairly versatile and the advantage of being a director's actor helps too!” According to her a Positive Attitude in all situations always works the best to achieve your goals. At a very young age Prachi Tehlan has achieved much success. I wanted to know her success mantra. HOW! Hardwork, Opportunity, Willpower. “My hardwork, sincerity, and talent have yielded fruits. I am a product of hardwork, will power and destiny.” “There are absolutely no shortcuts in life. Follow your passion, work towards it. What life offers you is for the best! There is nothing known as overnight success. Just stay strong, focus on yourself, groom yourself and remember you are your best friend.” Is Prachi Tehlan’s message to the youth of today.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus Station, in Mumbai, is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in India, blended with themes deriving from Indian traditional architecture. The building, designed by the British architect F. W. Stevens, became the symbol of Bombay as the ‘Gothic City’ and the major international mercantile port of India. The terminal was built over 10 years, starting in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms thus forging a new style unique to Bombay.
