THE EDITOR
Celebrate Good Times “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice.” - T.S. Eliot
I
t’s December 2016 and all I keep asking myself is: how did this happen? Time is moving faster than I can ever remember. But, before you rush onto the next one, pause for a second and think about all the things you’ve been able to achieve and experience this year. If, like me, the year seems to be a blur, just scroll through the photo gallery on your phone (or instagram profile) and remind yourself of all the amazing memories you’ve made. At FACT, it’s been a rollercoaster; dining awards, local events, seasonal campaigns and now the festive period; we’ve seen and done it all! This month is, hands down, one of the most lively and special in Abu Dhabi. We’ll be getting into the celebratory mood with many of you during the Festive Fun (p31) and with plenty of awesome New Year’s Eve happenings (p45). If you’ve been following FACT for the past few years, you’ll know that December not only means Christmas and New Year, it’s also the time when we bring back our holiday favourite for our readers; FACT’S FESTIVE GIVEAWAY! This year, we had such an overwhelming response that it’s going to be a prize every day until January 6, 2017! Yes, you heard! Turn to p18 and find out what you can WIN every day, and don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ FactAbuDhabi) and follow us on instagram (@factmagazine) to enter the daily competitions! It’s no secret that 2016 has been a difficult one. We lost some of the world’s biggest icons; Prince, David Bowie, Alan Rickman (Snape for life), Harper Lee and so many more great personalities, not to mention some of the world’s biggest and most shocking turn of events (*cough* brexit, *cough* US election). On the other hand, it’s also the year that gave us Insta-stories, Deadpool, a new Gaga album, the eerily-addictive Stranger Things and, of course, the Mannequin Challenge. Alas, there’s still some hope left! As always, family, food and travel were at the forefront of my 2016, and they’re all things that will continue into the next! Surely, the only way is up? Wishing you all a merry holiday season and a Happy New Year.☺

distinctive contributions,” he added. The Creative Act exhibition will feature more than 25 works in a variety of media— installation, painting, photography, sculpture, video, and works on paper, representing more than 18 artists. The exhibition will focus on the related themes of performance, process, and presence, which frame the exhibition’s curatorial narrative: Performance Performances can unfold in a given time and place, remaining afterward as recordings and documentations, and they can serve primarily as the means for creating discrete objects. Since the 1960s, many artists have adopted performative practices, sometimes serving as the central protagonist and undertaking carefully choreographed or spontaneous actions, and other times functioning as directors by providing instructions to participants. fact magazine

local ARTS
These aspects will be explored in The Creative Act, through works by artists such as Rasheed Araeen and Mohammed Kazem. Process The exhibition will bring together artworks that emphasise the act of creation and will feature photographs, films, videos, and archival documentation that will animate the methodology, inspiration, and innovation of the included artists. Many of the artists stress the importance of process, producing works that reveal how they were made, that forefront materiality, and that allow for transformation over time or in response to viewer interaction. Their art and related archival materials will bring to life the dynamic working methods of artists such as Shiraga Kazuo and Tanaka Atsuko, who were associated with the Gutai Art Association ( Japan, 1954–1972). The Creative Act also will feature another group of 1960s pioneers, among them Niki de Saint Phalle and Günther Uecker, who are known for their development of experimental approaches that involve the use of ostensibly destructive techniques and everyday materials to comment on contemporary society. The section will also feature an artwork by Anish Kapoor who is known for his large-scale geometric and biomorphic sculptures reminiscent of nature and living organisms. Presence The Creative Act also will delve into the theme of human presence, manifested by the appearance of the artist or others in the artworks as well as visible traces of the physical acts undertaken to realise them. Three immersive installations particularly exemplify this aspect. Works on paper and a video installation by Susan Hefuna examine similarities between the choreography of dance and people’s everyday movements as they traverse city streets. ✤ GO: The Creative Act: Performance, Process, Presence, will run from March 8, 2017 at Manarat Al Saadiyat. ARTS SPOTLIGHT
It’s not only going to be one of the region’s greatest openings in 2017, but probably the most exciting for the art world too. Here’s all the important needto-know about the stunning Louvre Abu Dhabi…
What is it? Only the BIGGEST news for art lovers in the GCC and beyond. Born out of an intergovernmental agreement between Abu Dhabi and France in 2007, Louvre Abu Dhabi and its universal story embodies the spirit of openness and dialogue among cultures, displaying works of historical, cultural and sociological significance from different times and civilisations. Once open, the museum’s permanent collection, as well as important loaned artworks from prestigious French institutions, will form an art historical narrative taking the visitor from ancient times to the contemporary through 23 permanent galleries in 12 sequences.
The Design Pritzker-prize winning architect Jean Nouvel has sought inspiration for the concept of Louvre Abu Dhabi in traditional Arabic architectural culture. Applying a contextual approach to the site, the Louvre Abu Dhabi has been designed as a ‘museum city’ in the sea, with its contrasting series of white buildings inspired by the medina and low-lying Arab settlements. In total there are approximately 55 individual buildings making up this museum city. The 180 meter-wide dome covers the majority of the museum city and becomes 64

an iconic structure visible from the sea, the surrounding areas and Abu Dhabi city. The dome will primarily act as a shading canopy to protect the outdoor plaza and the buildings below from the heat of the sun, providing local comfort and reducing building energy consumption. This strategy allows visitors to circulate outdoors between the Museum Galleries, Exhibitions, Children’s Museum, open plaza, café and restaurant.
between different cultures throughout history. The museum trail, highlighting universal themes and common influences, transcending geography, nationality and history, begins with prehistory, the birth of civilisations and the first great empires. It explores concepts such as religion, exchange across trade routes, voyages and discoveries, the role of the individual in history and contemporary themes related to the modern period and globalisation.
Museum Galleries Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection spans human history, emphasising exchange and shared human experience. The dialogue between artworks, manuscripts and objects in Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection, from the most ancient to the most contemporary enables visitors to discover shared influences and intriguing connections
Exhibitions & External Works Temporary exhibitions will be presented throughout the year in a separate space, ensuring that returning visitors will always find something new to discover. These present the opportunity to stage original and innovative exhibitions that will be developed in collaboration

with partner French museums, in some cases encompassing works from several institutions. An external artwork programme has also been integrated into the museum environment, extending the museum experience beyond the museum walls. The external artwork programme will include commissions from renowned contemporary artists who have been inspired by the museum environment to create unique in situ artworks and in some cases will be positioned in dialogue with other non-contemporary external artworks.
What’s coming up? Two internationally acclaimed artists have been commissioned to create sitespecific artworks that will be displayed in the museum when opening in 2017. Jean
Nouvel’s ‘museum city’ with its streets, plazas and waterways will feature artworks exhibited both inside the galleries as well as outside. Giuseppe Penone and Jenny Holzer have worked closely with the Louvre Abu Dhabi team to develop sculptures and installations reflecting the universal stories of the museum and in harmony with the iconic building. These are the first of a number of commissions for Louvre Abu Dhabi which will, through a diversity of artists, reflect the universal nature of the museum. Works from the permanent collection will be displayed alongside these commissions in the outdoor areas of the museum. Recreating the atmosphere of an Islamic courtyard, an Ottoman octagonal fountain and pavement (18th Century, Damascus, Syria) will be integrated in a contemporary scenography flooded with light. ✤

Big Screen Collateral Beauty What’s it about? A man who has lost all hope after losing his daughter retreats from life, questioning the universe by writing to Time, Love and Death. He receives some unexpected answers to help him work through all the heartbreak and bitterness. But is this really the cosmos reaching out to him, or is there something more logical at work here?
Director: David Frankel cast: Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Naomie Harris
Highlights “This film takes on an almost other-worldly narrative of directing your feelings and frustrations at the universe...”
Office Christmas Party What’s it about: Clay’s uptight CEO sister threatens to shut down his branch for underperforming, so he decides to throw an epic Christmas party in order to land a big client and save everyone’s jobs. It’s not long until the party gets out of control.
– Collateral Beauty
Why it’s worth watching? After all the US election drama and (disappointing) result, this is perhaps the uplifting boost we all need this holiday season. The seemingly fantastical drama Collateral Beauty will speak volumes to many viewers, and it’s all thanks to the magical writing and Will Smith pouring his heart and soul into the dramatic role of New York Ad Exec Howard Inlet. How would you face losing a child? Would all your success in life matter without them? This film takes on an almost other-worldly narrative of directing your feelings and frustrations at the universe – and so, Howard writes letters to Time ( Jacob Latimore), Death (Helen Mirren) and Love (Keira Knightley) as a therapeutic ruse until, one day, they start to show up. At the same time, his concerned friends are desperate to reconnect with him, so you’re constantly wondering which, if any, of Howard’s encounters are real. What you’re left with is an emotional holiday film that aims to decipher life’s constant interlocks and how even the deepest loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.
“Office Christmas Party is just that, but far from the mundane festive banter and best-behaviour around colleagues, this party is on a whole ‘nother level…” – Office Christmas Party
Director: Josh Gordon, Will Speck cast: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, T.J. Miller Why it’s worth watching? You always need that ONE film at Christmas that just breaks all the rules of holiday season cinema; in 2016, this is it. Office Christmas Party is just that, but far from the mundane festive banter and bestbehaviour around colleagues, this party is on a whole ‘nother level – think full-on open bar, bob sledging down the stairs, swinging off Christmas lights, an ice slide, things being thrown out of the window and Christmas trees on fire – and that’s just the tame side. If you want to know what NOT to do at the office Christmas party (or maybe how to spice things up!) this film is your one-stop idea shop! Plus, Jennifer Aniston is pretty bad a** in it too!

Starboy
By The Weeknd
There’s hardly a day that goes by in the FACT office where someone doesn’t play his music, so we’re glad to see Abel Tesfaye a.k.a The Weeknd continue to grow and turn corners. From vocals to production, he can literally do no wrong. Though Starboy – both the hit track and what we’ve heard of the album – sound light years away from when he first hit the music scene with his House of Balloons mixtape, The Weeknd’s latest offering is a little bit older and less inflated but with the same simple yet clever lyricism and stunning vocals that give us chills every time. In the first single of the same name as the 18-track record, not only is Daft Punk’s immaculate piano-framed production mind-blowing, The Weeknd’s voice is as frenetic and contagious as the beat, and it’s getting fans completely lit from the first chord. It’s that creepily distinctive, vampiric falsetto that we want him to show off in Starboy. Let’s hope he continues to stay in his own unique musical realm instead of falling to the world of commercial R&B-pop.

I See You
Oh how we remember our love for Enid Blyton’s Famous Five. Cleverly, Bruno Vincent has taken The Famous Five and turned this into a series of Enid Blyton books for grown-ups. We’re talking parenting, strategy days and even a visit to Brexit island (how much lol is that?) – and this particular story sees George, Dick, Anne, Julian and Timmy confront a new challenge: is it possible to get a good gluten-free cream tea? It’s the perfect story for any partners or friends who are reluctantly spiralising courgettes for dinner and thinking of as many new eggplant dishes as they can on a daily basis.
By The xx
Another of our music loves, The xx haven’t released an album since Coexist in 2012, and even though we’ve been getting regular bursts of the trio through Jamie xx’s In Colour, an album from the trio together has been long overdue and, from what we gather, a real labour of love! It was recorded in London, Reykjavik, New York, Los Angeles and Marfa, Texas and, going off the spotify snippets as well as the first single On Hold, The xx has had a slight revamp of sound. On Hold, which samples Hall & Oates’ I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do) doesn’t have that peak shivering, signature xx arrangement. Instead, it steps away from the dark atmospherics and into a more casually upbeat aesthetic. This is definitely a more open and expansive approach, and though the single is pleasant enough, we just hope that The xx haven’t change what they are known for, too much. Hopefully, there are still a few beautifully haunting tracks on there to give us our muchanticipated The xx fix.

The Chemist
By Stephanie Meyer The author who penned Twilight tries her hand (and imagination) at something new; The Chemist is the story of an ex-agent on the run from her former employers. She must take one more case to clear her name and save her life. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn’t even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. It is once again Meyer’s ability to create a world where the reader loses themselves in fiction that makes you really believe in this fierce and fascinating new heroine. Winner!

Quadrilatero d’Oro If you’re all about the shopping, this is the place to go. The area is made up of picturesque cobbled streets, lined with top designer boutiques like Chanel, Versace, Gucci, Fendi, Prada, Cartier and so many more luxury stores. The heart of the neighborhood lies in Via Monte Napoleone, where Italian culture is alive in terms of museums, cafes and historic palazzi can be found amongst the modernday swag of glossy brands. This is where to take a minute, stop, and people watch!
Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper Possibly one of the world’s most famous murals, The Last Supper is a joy to seek and adore. It’s hidden away on a wall of the refectory adjoining the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie. When you do find it, you’ll see a depiction of Christ and his disciples, one of the most iconic and dramatic moments events in history. You’ll have to book in advance to be astonished by its beauty, which you will get to marvel for an entire 15-minutes on a guided tour. 68

Cathedral in Duomo This 600-year-old Gothic cathedral is a great reflection of the city’s creative ambitions and extravagance. The pink Candoglia structure stands with a staggering 135 spires and 3400 statues, rising high like something from a fairytale. Large stained-glass windows adorn the inside – making it a worth while visit if you’re a fan of old-school architecture. Don’t forget your camera, this is one of the best spots to capture an instagram-worthy photo.
Castello Sforzesco Made up of 12 mini-museums and archives running all the way from Palaeolithic history through to 1950s furniture, this place was home to the noble Visconti family from 1368, and restored to its original splendour by the equally
aristocratic Sforzas in the 1450s. Coming to a spindly point above the façade is an early 20th-century recreation of a tower originally built by the 15th-century architect Antonio Averlino, dubbed Il Filarete. There’s a stunning courtyard, beautiful sculptures and the best of Renaissance style.
Teatro alla Scala A trip to Milan would be incomplete without an opera, ballet or theatre stop, and this is just the place to do it. Dedicated to one of the most exclusive temples of music and performing arts, Teatro alla Scala puts on some of the world’s best operas, ballets, concerts and cultural events. When rehearsals are not in session, you can get a glimpse of the gilt-encrusted interior, or visit the museum next door for beautiful exhibitions.

Navigli Waterways A network of canals, partly designed by Leonardo da Vinci, once stretched right across Milan, now confined to two long waterways – the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese – in the city’s south. If you fancy spending an hour cruising the canals, book yourself an organised tour that takes in the ancient washhouses of vicolo dei Lavandai and San Cristoforo, the Scodellino bridge and the old Darsena port. Hop off and visit the bohemian canals’ shores, lined with cool cafes and vintage shops. It’s a great way of taking in a less touristy part of the city, and doing it from the water shows Milan in a completely different light.
Lunch at Luini Panzerotti If you walk to the Dom and you see a long queue coming out of one of the side streets of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, then you’d better stop straight away and join it. Why? Because this is the queu
that leads to a small two-window, holein-the-wall that serves up Milan’s most favourite food – the legendary panzerotti - a fried pastry triangle stuffed with tomato and trickling mozzarella – it’s the stuff of dreams. It’s originally from Puglia but has become one of Milan’s most recognisable treats.

There’s no doubt that you’ll see Milan’s original yellow and orange 1920s and 1950s trams driving around the city. The vehicles have varnished wooden seats and iconic fluted glass lampshades. To get a real taste of tram life, hop onboard the number one which will let you take in some of Milan’s most symbolic monuments. The hotel is situated in the former building of Hotel Duca di Milan, which was redesigned and extended between 1988 and 1991 by the late, globally-renowned architect Aldo Rossi. The new facade unveiled a striking red brick and stone Lombard exterior, with four large Carrara marble columns and linear windows framing the entrance in a simple and cultured design. Today, the building stands as a masterpiece of modern Italian architecture. Location wise, ME Milan Il Duca is in the centre of Milan, in one of the largest Italian squares named Piazza della Repubblica, which was built in 1865 to house Milano’s central railway station. Just minutes from the fashion district and the new vibrant Porta Garibaldi area, which boasts the hottest nightclubs, innovative concept stores and design showrooms, ME Milan Il Duca is a sought-after spot for visitors. The hotel is also close to Porta Venezia, the oldest Milanese park dating back to 1780,

The main metro lines, tram lines, a railway station and the central line are all close by, so when you’ve had your share of walking, hopping on the public transport is as easy as can be! Upon arrival, it’s the real sense of local that we see in the building, the staff, their service and their welcome, which makes us feel comfortable and relaxed to begin our stay. Even the plant-lined archway at the entrance reminds us of an old-school Italian garden or courtyard. After a smooth check-in, it’s up to the Aura Room! Where to Rest ME Milan Il Duca has 132 rooms, including 34 suites, 32 of which are Chic suites, plus the Personality Suite, and Presidential Suite, which can be combined to form the Suite ME. We stayed in the gorgeous Aura Room. Located on the 1st to 9th floors, these rooms are super spacious with chic neutral décor and all the amenities you could ask for. smoked mirrors allow guests to look around them. With the main attraction being the USDA meat, that’s what we go for, cooked medium – it’s exquisite. Plus, the signature Parmesan Truffle Fries and Shrimp Rice Krispies are a great addition to the meal. Taste and presentation both score huge points and we polish off the food in no time! After a filling dinner, head to the popular Radio Rooftop Bar Milan, located on the 10th floor. WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT
W
e’ve visited hotels up and down Abu Dhabi’s glittering Corniche but never had we stayed at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana. The 5-star property is located on the tip of the Corniche, opposite Emirates Palace (great for sightseeing). Be prepared for the most friendly welcome as the staff, from the bellboy to the front office, the lobby lounge waiters and housekeeping, all cast a lasting first impression within just a few hours of checking in. We experienced warm smiles and a real can-do approach, something that could have been easily lost considering that the hotel was having a busy week with guests visiting on holiday, for business and to dine at the restaurants. We’re off to a great start!
IMPRESSIVE ROOMS The hotel boasts 443 rooms and suites, many overlooking the Arabian Sea and the picturesque grounds. There’s an option for every type of traveller; couples, solo, business and culture trips, but it’s especially great for families. We stayed in a Premium Room Plus – a HUGE space that is ideal for up to three people or families with small children who want optimum space and facilities for their staycay. It’s the size and the sea view that we’re in awe of – there’s a big bathroom with a bathtub 76

and walk-in shower, there’s a lovely open plan dining and sitting area, and lo’ and behold, there’s a well-equipped kitchenette with plenty of storage space, a washing machine, fridge, hob, and all the cutlery and utensils you need to whip up an evening meal (for those days where all you want to do is come back from the pool, cook something yummy and relax). We love that the room is designed to give guests the experience of being in a house but also manages to separate where you eat, lounge, work, and sleep in a practical way. To top that off, imagine waking up to breathtaking, far-reaching views of the Arabian Gulf – that’s exactly what you’ll get from this amazing room.
WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT
FOODIE FAVES When you’re having a long weekend stay, dining options are key to choosing where to spend your days. Luckily, for guests at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan, there’s nothing but variety. Breakfast at Horizon is a lavish affair of abundant variety and plenty of filling and lighter options to start your day off. Switch it up for lunch and order yourself a charming afternoon tea at The Lounge. Three-tiers packed with sweet and savoury delights; the scones are incredible and the tuna sandwich is delish (it’s the simple things that matter!). You might be surprised to learn that Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan By Rotana is the only “dry” 5-star hotel in Abu Dhabi, in that it doesn’t serve alcohol. While this might deter some guests, we found it to be one of the best and most unique appeals of the hotel. It means that you’re not going to get rowdy guests or unwanted smells in certain areas – bonus! In the evening, Kamoon
is the place to be. It’s an authentic Arabic restaurant that serves up some of the best wholesome and lip-licking Arabic dishes alongside some of the best shisha we’ve tried. The mixed grill, hummous and muhammara is just divine! For the cooler season, the terrace here is THE place to be with your loved ones for a guaranteed great dining experience.
recommend booking in for a massage – we tried the massage treatment that’s designed for pain relief from aching muscles, especially good for people who work out. Not only was the entire experience professional and beyond relaxing, the effects of the massage lasted for days afterwards, something which we enjoyed throughout the stay.
RECREATION HEAVEN
Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana offers hospitality with an Arabian touch. It celebrates local culture whilst retaining the high standards of the Rotana brand. It’s in just the right location for a complete escape but close enough to malls and other attractions if you do fancy getting out to explore. With so many key features ticked, what more could you ask for? ✤
Now, facilities is one of the main reasons why this hotel is just ideal for every member of the family. The 200-metre pristine beach, the massive outdoor pool (there’s a kids pool, crèche and playground too), the tennis and squash courts, excellent gym and fitness centre, exciting watersports activities and, most of all, the Wellness and Massage services at the spa, all of these provide guests with enough options for a laid back but occupied getaway. he Inf initi Q30 active compact is a new type of premium vehicle for a new type of consumer. Representing Infiniti’s first entry into the fast-growing premium compact segment, the Q30 will play an important role in continuing to drive the growth of the brand here in the region. Firstly, let’s talk about the way this car looks. The Q30 takes Infiniti’s signature design cues and evolves them into new dynamic shapes. Eye-catching design is one of the Q30’s cornerstones, including the expressive ‘Human-Eye’ headlights and double-arch grille with 3D mesh treatment up front, where the dramatic curves and turbulent lines flow up the bonnet, over the fenders and across the bodyline into the strong shoulder of the car. The signature swept C-pillar arcs at the rear, forward in a dynamic crescent shape that emphasises motion,
even when stationary. The contrast of the long, low-slung roofline, conjuring an image of a rakish shooting brake in silhouette, and elevated stance add to the visual impact. This also adds to a sleek look that gives the impression of the car being in motion even when standing still. The balance of sculptural shapes moving past one another creates a harmonious design that can be appreciated at a glance. How’s that for head-turning? And when we were done admiring the outside of the car, we got in the driver’s seat and took a moment to appreciate the interior of the Q30. Inside, the car is certainly striking. Even the entry-level Q30 GT features deep padded dash sections, contrast stitching, and gloss black accent trims. Then there’s the manual climate controls and the 7.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, cruise control with speed limiter, auto lights and wipers, and a Nappa leather
CITY RIDES
wrapped steering wheel, which offers a good grip for drivers. An important, differentiating characteristic of the Q30’s design is its combination of elevated stance with an overall height that is comparable with models in the traditional compact segment. The Q30’s height (1,495mm) allows for a higher hip point (531mm), which aids ingress and egress. The A-pillar design is intentionally slim, contributing to a more enhanced visibility for a confident driving experience. In other words, more front seat space and a raised driving position will make for the utmost comfort when you’re behind the wheel (we can vouch for that!). Under the bonnet of the Q30 range is a line-up of three engines: Q30 GT is powered by a 115kW/250 turbocharged 1.6 litre petrol four-cylinder, while Q30 Sport and Sport Premium offer a choice of either a 155kW/350Nm 2.0 litre turbo petrol, or 125kW/350Nm 2.2 litre turbo diesel. The Q30 Sport stands a little lower (1,475mm), accentuating the already distinctive, coupe-like silhouette, which is emphasised by a shallow side glass area, while also providing for agile ride and handling. Driving performance will also be differentiated, thanks to individual suspensions settings and distinctive ride and handling characteristics – offering premium compact buyers a choice that is specific to their personal needs and preferences.
The Q30 Premium includes LED front fog lamps, body-coloured and heated door mirrors, as well as chrome dual rectangular exhaust finishers. Its striking appearance is enhanced with 18-inch alloy wheels – you’ve got to see them to appreciate just how good they look! On the technology front, the Q30 delivers in spades as the best equipped with the highest level of assistive technology in the segment. This includes: Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Intelligent Parking Assist, Forward Collision Warning with Forward Emergency Braking and Blind Sport Warning. A first for Infiniti and this category, the Intelligent Parking Assist is designed to work in the three most common parking situations, tight parallel parking, 90-degree backingin and heading – in parking. Using 12 sensors in the front and rear, the system automatically steers the vehicle into place with the additional help or audio and visual warnings whilst the driver controls the brake and accelerator. Is the Inf initi Q30 good? Absolutely. In fact the Q30 might be one of the best and most appealing vehicles in the current Infiniti range. With bold styling, plenty of premium equipment, guaranteed reliability, and pricing that represents great value, the Q30 will definitely lift the Infiniti brand into the eye-line of buyers looking for something fresh to take on the roads. ✤ fact magazine

On top of that, it also finds out Santa’s estimated arrival time to your place, with a countdown timer. FOR HER
This autumn the identity of the Massimo Dutti woman is more feminine and elegant than ever. As of the very beginning of the season, in which touches of colour from a subtle palette of pinks or fresh cornflower blue are still with us, we encounter garments with delicate shapes until we are immersed full on in the season, when the combination of classic pieces with basic sports garments come into play, along with a palette of autumn colours, in a variety of fabrics such as silk, leather and nylon. Classic, elegant and very feminine pieces are rounded off in cashmere and light-weight wools. Massimo Dutti also includes a slight preppy nod this season, inspired by the marvellous French style. Garments of impeccable quality, such as the essential camel coat or the iconic navy blue wool peacoat are must-haves. Tailored Corner renews classic tailoring and combines it with pieces made of high quality Italian fabric with other more casual work-wear pieces, such as waistcoats, pencil skirts, dresses or capes. Minimalist, clean-cut and refined lines that inspire comfortable garments are suffused in navy blues, greys and ecru palette.
FOR HIM
This season a certain eclectic style seems to arise, and this is because men’s fashion is complemented with a wink and a nod to other creative universes such as that of sports, industrial design, music or even feminine fashion. This autumn we will find garments and accessories that adopt and adapt to all the fashion codes. This season’s Massimo Dutti man is not a conventional man, he is in search for the counterpoint between professional and private life, intermixing the structure of the work days with moments of leisure, dressing in a more vanguard style. The palette of colours in blacks, greys, tobacco, navy blues and touches of white are the one that predominate this season. Autumn absolutely demands that nod to the preppy style, which in this case combines the most intense colours such as green and fuchsia with navy blue and light grey, including a range of oranges, earthy tones and royal blue mixed together with natural colours. Finally, jeans are taking over in all their cuts and textures, combined with leather jackets or printed shirts. Winners of the prestigious Middle East “Watch of the Year” Awards were announced last month during a private gala event held at the RitzCarlton DIFC. The awards, now in their 12th year, are designed to recognise watchmaking excellence; winners are judged by an independent group of regional watch connoisseurs. Rounding up the third annual edition of Salon des Grandes Complications, the exclusive gala and awards - sponsored by Maserati - was attended by over 300 of the region’s most prominent watch companies, collectors, retailers and industry leaders. Guests enjoyed a red carpet cocktail reception followed by a sumptuous dinner served during the ceremony. 102 fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE
Cho Gao has long been a favourite in Abu Dhabi with its buzzing vibe and relaxed atmosphere. fact sat down with Chef Sonthaya Sinphoothon to try a variety of much-loved, signature dishes and learn more about his food philosphy, love of cooking and just what makes this venue at the crowne plaza abu dhabi so popular. Food at Cho Gao is labelled with its country of origin and you’ll find dishes from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines on the menu - so you’ll never tire of their many great options. Everything from tasty salads, an array of appetisers, soups, stir-fry items and main dishes all await to please your palate. Chef Sonthaya is very passionate about his job and loves seeing guests trying new dishes. He explains that his cooking philosophy is all about using fresh ingredients. “It’s all about enjoying the experience of cooking for other people and making healthy and tasty food for all my guests using the freshest ingredients,” he says. This really shows in the menu at Cho Gao which boasts delicious, colourful dishes from all over Asia. When creating the menu for Cho Gao, Chef Sonthaya tried his best to use pure Asian ingredients. “I tried to take a new and different approach to ensure the diner will have a truly authentic experience,” he tells us. “All too often here, restaurants try to make too much impact on presentation but don’t focus enough of the correct flavours. I enjoy making all Asian dishes because of the combination of fresh herbs and spices that gives each dish bursting flavor.” The chef ’s passion for his job really shows when you’re talking to him about the restaurant and it’s so refreshing to meet 104 fact magazine
a pro-cook who is so genuinely excited and in love with their job! “I can explore my creativity in the kitchen and educate our guests about real Asian cuisine,” Chef Sonthaya says. “I also love seeing how people enjoy eating my food.” All this talk of delicious Asian fare has our taste buds at peak point and we waste no time ordering several dishes from the menu. We start with the Raw Papaya Salad, Mango Salad and Wasbai Prawns (one of the restaurant’s signature dishes). The Raw Papaya Salad comes with green papaya, tofu, spring onions, fresh beans and carrots and is simply fresh and tasty. Much like the Mango Salad, every ingredient tastes like it only just sprouted and was washed and plated especially for you to savour – a great start. The standout was the Wasabi Prawns; these tasty morsels of crispy Gulffried prawns with spicy chilli and coriander sauce, topped with wasabi dressing and mango salsa are, honestly, the thing of foodie dreams. Crunchy, packed with flavour and hot on the table, this was the dish that had us all fighting out for the last piece! Word of advice: get one portion to yourself, because they’re just TOO good to share. We’re already suitably impressed when we move onto the mains of Braised Beef Rendang and Choo Chee Salmon. The Braised Beef Rendang is a fantastic dish with slow cooked beef in coconut milk, infused

with spices and served with jasmine rice. We are equally happy with the Choo Chee Salmon where succulent salmon fillet sits on a large plate after being sautéed with chilli paste, coconut milk, sweet basil leaves and bell peppers. The latter is on the spicy side, which we happen to love, but if you can’t handle the heat, we suggest the tender beef or just request for mild chilli. We were feeling sufficiently full but there’s always room for dessert, right? We’re treated to an array of sweet delights such as sorbet and ice cream, Jasmine Tea Crème Brulee and exotic fruits on ice. Every spoonful will feel like a trip through Asia; even the fruit will have you doing the happy dance from its flavourful pieces, and next to the
intriguing crème brulee, you’re in for a fab end to a mouthwatering meal. When Chef Sonthaya is at home he likes to keep his cooking simple and authentic. “When I’m at home, I like to eat all kinds of Asian soups - mixing different flavours together gives me energy,” he shares. With such an honest approach to creating good food and a menu that stays true to its origins, it’s no wonder that Cho Gao continues to rise in Abu Dhabi’s culinary ranks. Make it your next epicurean eat and leave impressed, just as we did.✤ GO: Visit Cho Gao at Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi. Call (0)2 616 6149 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

Luxury Dining Abu Dhabi has long been the home of all things high-end, but when it comes to dining, few venues have managed to capture the lavishness that’s expected of luxury restaurants. That is, until Roberto’s Abu Dhabi opened its doors at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island. FACT went to check it out…

hat’s your definition of fine dining? Is it small portions with minimalistic presentation? Are you partial to a good bit of truffle or expensive caviar? Perhaps you like the idea of glossy décor and being served the most exclusive bottle of bubbly? What is it – ask yourself; now, hold that thought and let us take you inside Roberto’s Abu Dhabi. Presenting itself as a luxury dining destination, Roberto’s is a classic and polished indoor and outdoor venue offering up Italian gastronomy like nothing you’ve tasted before (trust us, the food is IN-SANE). On approach, you’ll never guess that the inside is a sprawling area with a lovely, large dining room-style area dubbed Il Ristorante, a long marble Crudo Bar (where live seafood preparations can be seen), the climate controlled outdoor terrace and a modern lounge called Salloto where the crowds gather for inventive mixology and sophisticated nights out. It’s basically for revelers who want to keep their food and the party in one place – bonus. So, let us break it down for you. Start off with a fruity mocktail (or whatever happens to be your liquid kryptonite) at Salloto lounge. The mood-lit area creates a dark, intimate setting, ideal for evening dates or more private gatherings. Take a seat at one

of the elegant tables in Il Ristorante and get ready to be wowed by the menu. With Two Michelin star Chef Enrico Bartolini as dedicated Chief Culinary Advisor to Roberto’s, the menu here is a classiccontemporary tribute to Italy. Il Ristorante’s signature white marble Crudo Bar can be found artfully displaying a hand selected array of seafood, to be prepared before your eyes. Being the complete food connoisseurs that we are, we got straight to it. During this tasting of signature menu items, there were some dishes that left a real lasting impression. Meat eaters, the Manzo In Tartare Tradizionale will blow you away. The classic preparation of the traditional tartare with the noble Japanese Wagyu beef, a mustard mayonnaise and truffle pearls brings a pleasant touch of acidity to the palate. For anyone who usually shies away from raw dishes, this is a fabulous introduction. Next up is the Melanzana Ieri Oggi E Domani, a trilogy of Parmigiana from yesterday, today and tomorrow… three ways of reinventing the oven-baked eggplant with mozzarella, parmesan, tomato sauce and basil. The biggest twist on a super traditional Italian dish – did we like it? YES! The creativity continues into the Polpo, Cacio E Pepe, E Carciofi, which is slowcooked, roasted octopus. Our waiter tells us that it’s a tribute to Abu Dhabi, mingling

modern techniques with Ancient Roman ingredients: artichoke and cacio e pepe sauce, made of Pecorino cheese, milk and black pepper. Hands down, it’s the best octopus dish we’ve tried in the entire GCC. The Gamero Mezzo Fritto is unlike anything we’ve ever come across in an Italian restaurant. These Sicilian red prawns are half fried and half raw, served with a tamarind sauce and topinambour. Pick it up, dip in the sauce, and savour every bite. HELLO. THANK YOU. GOODBYE.
Risotto Alle Rape Rosse E Salsa Al Gorgonzola – this was the dish of the night. This risotto of beetroot and gorgonzola sauce is a historic dish created by Enrico Bartolini: the beetroot is cooked at low temperature for seven hours and united to the rice with a gorgonzola fondue. It tastes as exquisite as it sounds – just order it! Agnello is another main that wins us over; a very tender grilled Canadian lamb tenderloin served with polenta, black truffle and porcini mushroom sauce, grilled asparagus and breaded meatballs with thyme. Well, that’s the fine dining box ticked. When it comes to dessert, you’re in for a magnificent treat; Gelato that you won’t find on the menu; it’s made à la minute. Ask for the special premium Bronte pistachio ice cream, its sweetness balanced
with just a pinch of sea salt, served in a huge tower for sharing. Divine! Roberto’s Abu Dhabi is not the kind of place you can just rock up to after a full day at work or if you’re doing a mall run in your sweats – for this place, you’ve got to be dressed to the nines and looking your best. The menu is a little pricey BUT you’re getting so much quality for every dirham. And if it’s not a place you can make a regular hangout, head over on a special occasion and treat yourself; the experiment, intrigue, colour and passion of the food and drinks is what will make your dining experience SO worth it. ✤ GO: Visit Roberto’s Abu Dhabi at The Galleria Mall, Al Maryah Island. FOODIE CORNER

he past few years has seen Latin American cuisine work its way up the food chain and onto the dining scene faster than a kid chasing an ice cream truck. Whilst some places were quick to label themselves with the latest culinary fad, other serious contenders took their time and opened their doors when the concept, the menu, the staff and the venue, were all in sync. This place then quickly became the talk of the town, something that has gone from Chinese whispers to full-on megaphone madness in recent months – honestly, we can’t have a conversation about food in Abu Dhabi without someone raving about BU! So, naturally, off we went for a Pan-Latin lunch. BU!’s interior is as spirited as its food. The restaurant describes itself as “effortlessly chic with a worn-in industrial elegance” – well, that hits the nail on the head. This venue blends modern, urban and sensual elements with its huge loft-style space housing a long bar, high ceilings, stylish light fixtures, creative seating options and contemporary design. You have to see it to appreciate it. We open up the menu and see the words “invite you on a journey through Latin America with a sharing-style menu featuring authentic dishes from the vibrant continent” - amazing! So it’s not just Brazilian or just Argentinian, the menu features influences from regions throughout Latin America, something we can’t wait to try. Second, the concept of dishes being served to share is very reminiscent of South American culture, where food brings people together for a good time. But, this is also great for allowing diners to try a variety of dishes in one visit. Go for the Atun for starters; a mixture of tuna, soy, wasabi, lime, orange, green aji, sesame oil and red onion. Ok, big statement; this is the BEST ceviche we’ve ever had. It’s light, fresh and doesn’t feel like a raw dish, but more a palate112 fact magazine
pleasing plate of flavour – H.E.L.L.O. Next up is the Wan Tan; duck confit , peanuts, sesame, rocoto chilli from the Antojos (cravings) section. When this dish came out, our jaws literally hit the table. It was a steaming plate of the most vibrant colour and we got straight to it. The filling is exquisite and we almost regret having to share it! Beef Tacos and a dish that could only be described as a Mushroom-filled cross between ravioli and a won ton, also arrive at the table – both eaten with a lot of “mmmhs” and “this is SO good” said in between bites. The meat isn’t heavy – it’s tender and delicious, whilst the mushroom concoction will be a sure win for all the vegetarian diners out there. For dessert, it had to be the mindblowing Churros and the equally delightful Cheese Cake Alfajor – crispy nougat sandwich, dulce de leche cheesecake and crushed hazelnuts. If that doesn’t get your sweet tooth raving, we don’t know what will. We love that there’s a whole section at the

back which gives fun, short explanations of different dishes on the menu. You can pick up some trivia marks in between courses! Food is not the only stand out at BU! – there’s innovative drinks and even a cigar menu which promises an enhanced cigar and spirits pairing experience. It only took the first dish for us to join the BU! fan club, so much so that we returned two more days in a row to try more from the awesome menu! Don’t believe the hype? We dare you to go and try it… an advance welcome to the BU! appreciation crew to you all! ✤ GO: Visit BU! at Level 4 of The Hub in The Mall at World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi.
