its beautiful beach-facing location at Al Muneera Plaza on Al Raha Beach. Inspired by founder Reem Al Shemari’s passion for great tasting, honest food, Tawa Bakery is a guaranteed 100 per cent gluten free zone and has a menu which focuses
on flavoursome and inventive continental dishes – how awesome does that sound? Reem always wanted to share her love for food with the world and a couple of years ago, after being diagnosed with celiac disease, her mission was to raise awareness that gluten free goodness does not mean a compromise on taste or quality. The name Tawa means a flat frying pan, very commonly used in the UAE to make Arabic bread, and was chosen to reflect the Reem’s Emirati roots. The cuisine, however, is inspired by Reem’s love for continental flavours. Tawa Bakery’s menu reflects current culinary trends and combines wholesome food favourites with premium ingredients and techniques to produce outstandingly tasty dishes. Freshly baked breads, scrumptious burgers and gourmet sandwiches like the signature Tuna Melt, and gourmet pizzas topped with premium Italian cheese, and traditional Arabic dishes such as Manaeesh, are served alongside beautifully crafted beverages and tempting desserts. The creativity doesn’t stop at the kitchen; Tawa Bakery’s convivial stylish atmosphere has a relaxed neighbourhood charm, tinged with a European sensibility. Every décor element has been carefully selected and takes inspiration from Reem’s travels around the world. Yes, SO MUCH yes! With it’s varied menu and beautiful venue, Tawa Bakery is the idyllic spot for friends and family to enjoy gorgeous surroundings, excellent fare and refreshing drinks. ✤ GO: Tawa Bakery is open daily from 7.30am to 11pm at Al Muneera Plaza, Al Raha Beach. If you’re eating raw, choose and buy sushi-grade fish and seafood to avoid risk from parasite illness or any bacterial contamination. • Once the rice is cooked add the sushi vinegar right away to absorb the flavour well.

Steak-a-licious Chef Gerardo Recabarren - The Forge Steakhouse, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal
Tips & Tricks The Perfect Steak • One of the most important things is your source of heat - the kind of charcoal you use - as it makes a great difference to the taste. I prefer pure natural lump charcoal because it gets scorching hot in around 10 to 15 minutes and your steak will absorb pure wood smoke aromas. Usually the smokiness emanates from one kind of wood only, such as mesquite or oak.
• Another important point is seasoning. I prefer to use sea salt flakes and first I let the meat rest for about 10 to 20 minutes before sprinkling both sides with salt flakes pressing them lightly into the meat, keeping in mind that I will add another pinch right before serving the steak. For me, black pepper has to be freshly grounded once the steak is ready to be served. • Preheating your grill is essential. Once your lump charcoal is lit, it will take about 30 minutes to make your grill very hot. Make sure you clean your grill with help from a set of long tongs and some paper towel dipped in cooking oil and water, to prevent the paper from sticking to the grill. • My favorite steak is Wagyu Tomahawk - a rib eye cut with the entire rib bone intact. I prefer a thick steak with a high density of marbling, which adds great flavor to the steak. Usually, for my guests, I recommend Wagyu Tomahawk for sharing due to its 1.2 kg weight, but personally, I don’t like to share mine! Tips & Tricks A Lavish Buffet • Ingredients: Understanding what type of food you want to prepare, and acknowledging which ingredients are suitable for a live counter, are the most important factors of a buffet. Another is knowing which dishes can offer interaction between the chef and the guest - what can you offer the guest as part of the culinary experience? The overall focus will always be on the flavour of the food and to ensure this, you need to work backwards. Choose your four key ingredients….protein, accompaniment, sauce and garnish which need to work when put together. • Equipment: For buffet style food it’s extremely important to work with proper equipment. For example a cast iron skillet, which is versatile, easy to cook with and can maintain being cooked on over and over again. At CuiScene we have introduced a Flambé trolley as a new experience. The live entertainment from it, as well as the flexibility it offers the chef, in terms of temperature control, means we can provide the very best dishes that you wouldn’t normally get if it was left out on the buffet station. Another important aspect is how the food is stored on the stations. It’s important that cold foods are cold, and hot foods should be hot – and if you don’t have the right equipment to do this, the whole experience of the food is ruined.

• Technique: Some foods still have to go on the buffet stations, not everything can be on a live station. The technique used here is to make sure there is enough moisture on the dish itself (if it needs it). For example, if you are choosing to put a fish on the buffet choose one with high fat so that it can still be juicy after an hour on the buffet. Black cod or halibut are good examples of this. When it comes to meat – braised meat is better like short ribs or brisket as they stay delicious even after a few hours. Dishes that require slow cooking but can still be eaten, like a goulash or beef stew, are also great to have on a buffet. Remember before putting a dish on the buffet, this dish may need to stay out for over an hour. GO: Visit CuiScene at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. Call (0)2 654 3238.

from amman to the world: A New Superhero Sensation If you were at the 2016 Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) in Dubai, you will have heard the buzz surrounding the Arab world’s newest superhero – Wayl. A collaborative effort between creator and writer Zaid Adham and artist Yasser Alireza, the comic book garnered much attention before its unveiling and an already growing fan base after a successful debut at MEFCC. I
t’s not often that you hear of a superhero comic book that is created and set in the Middle East, in fact, pop culture in the Arab world isn’t really famed for offering up strong, heroic protagonists to capture the minds and hearts of readers and viewers… yet. Well, that’s all about to change. Enter Wayl (meaning Woe), a story about Sufyan El-Taher, a man who has recently returned to his hometown of Amman, the capital city of Jordan, from a long life abroad, only to find the city in ruins with crime and corruption at the taking over. Sufyan, who ultimately becomes Wayl, is tasked with saving his city from this bleak reality. It’s a refreshing concept, one that the Middle East and international audiences are ready for, and it’s made all the more authentic as we learn that Zaid Adham, Arab-Canadian writer, producer and director, and the man behind the storytelling of this comic, was actually born in Amman – where Wayl is set. “There were many inspirations behind Wayl,” he says. “You see, the spiritual atmosphere that I had intended to showcase stemmed from the visions I had in my head of my hometown of Amman, which I had always felt had a unique aura to it. If there was one place in the Middle East that could truly be

home to a comic book superhero, regardless of the medium, it would be Amman. “Writing the stories came from different places, but the underlying bond between them all, I guess, would be that atmosphere and the need to distinguish Arab comic art as something more than just derivative or stereotypical - sword-wielding nomads in the desert or genies fighting demons in the sky,” he continues. “I wanted this to be a pure form of entertainment, and set out to write this way.” The foundation of Wayl’s incredibly powerful plot is one that resonates, deeply, now more than ever before, as talented people from the Middle East region strive to break into a competitive regional and and global creative market. And, though the comic book will not intend to enter into political or religious realms of the region, its message of ethics, morals and the pursuit of justice will, to a certain extent, also help to eliminate any negative stereotypes of Middle Eastern culture.
wayl: need to know! - Wayl is an adult-targeted series with a psycho-thriller theme and 16+ rating. - Wayl’s superpower stems from his ability to channel his neuroelectricity to create any object or weapon of his desire. - Zaid and Yasser met at Kinokuniya, whilst browsing comics, in Dubai Mall. - Yasser’s part in Wayl, the artistic side, took one year to complete. - The development of the comic from concept to publication took five years.
arts & culture With its many characters, Wayl helps to educate, inspire, and prepare, as well as entertain, a whole generation of young Arabs on the truths of the “real” world, including the kind of people you might encounter on a daily basis. Saudi illustrator and writer, Yasser Alireza, who makes up the second half of the creative team behind Wayl, explains: “It [Wayl] is very real and relatable. This is the whole point of the comic. The story, the atmosphere and the art draws on insights that are local but told from a worldly point of view both in terms of story and art. “Most people who read our comic will see the characters and find equivalents in their daily life. These characters may not behave in such exaggerated ways, but the essence of each character will be recognisable to readers, especially those who are active in the work force and are exposed to life’s challenges,” he adds. “Like most story tellers, we do have an objective with readers: we want the late teens who are heading off to college or 20-somethings joining the workforce to understand the complex types of people they will be dealing with and how every decision is not black or white, and that mistakes will happen with long-lasting impact.”
“The city of Amman as set fictionally in this story has become dystopian, corrupt and overrun with crime, with even the forces of law apathetic to do anything about it. The protagonist’s proactivity towards the events that he witnesses sets him on the path to becoming the woe to the city’s crime, exemplified in his motto, Woe unto the wicked.”- Zaid Adham on choosing to call the comic Wayl. fact magazine

The first issue of Wayl develops the introductory story of Sufyan’s return to Amman and begins developing the series of events that led to the creation of the superbeing Wayl. Zaid tells us: “The Wayl character as an Arab superhero and the supporting characters who are with him in the story were inspired by the evident reality many Arab people live today: bi-lingual, dual-nationality, dual identity. “There is a large palette of characters to choose from that can be rooted in the city of Amman, but the fact that Sufyan is the son returning from abroad, who can be described as a Third Culture Kid, is a reflection of the sort of culture shock many people experience when going back to their hometowns if they haven’t lived there most of their lives,” Zaid adds. “I certainly have that culture shock, and it’s easy to draw inspiration from that.” One of the interesting things that strikes us about Wayl, is its looming storyline and the way in which Zaid and Yasser have worked to create something that can be relatable to a wide spectrum of audiences. Zaid’s background as a writer-director of psychological thrillers will, no doubt, have been a big influence in this. But, also, the way in which Yasser has visually developed the world of Wayl, adds to the darkness created in the comic book. “Wayl’s unique positioning is that, it is an adult-targeted series framed as a caper story with a psycho-thriller theme - one of the few, if not the only in the region, hence the 16+ rating on the cover,” Yasser explains. “With that in mind, it became important for Zaid and I to portray this series in a manner that would appeal to an older audience. “Visually, the comic is filled with dark tones,
rigid lines and breaks from conventional drawing styles seen in most superhero comics. Panel layouts shift from simple to complex depending on story tension as we took liberty with adding a surreal feel to the comic, intending an eerie atmosphere. Keeping in mind that Wayl is a superhero comic at heart, we maintained some basic elements seen in superhero comics to keep it recognisable and relatable to readers,” he says. Both Zaid and Yasser make it a point to note that, even though Wayl has an edgier side, it doesn’t, in any way, champion hopelessness. Actually, it’s the very opposite. Wayl addresses some of the dark realities about the world we live in, as an importance to build the foundations for a hopeful outcome and a better future. After hearing about the work process behind Wayl, it’s no secret that Zaid and Yasser’s working relationship is based on trust, respect and mutual understanding for one another’s craft. Add to this their personal friendship and you’ve got a recipe for creative success. Two things set Wayl apart from other comics: it’s a superhero story with a completely localised angle and with sophisticated design. But, it’s winning factor has to be the two incredibly passionate creators at the helm. We can't wait to see what the future holds for this talented duo and their comic baby! ✤ fact magazine

Captain America: Civil War
What’s it about: This third Captain America film adapts the Civil War storyline from Marvel Comics as political interference in the Avengers’ activities pits two teams, and former allies, Captain America and Iron Man, against one another.
Director: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen Why it’s worth watching? Marvel has been churning out its biggest superhero stories for the big screen at an astonishingly fast pace, and this month sees the return of the first avenger – Captain America. Now, we know that the Marvel superhero ensemble can be quite hard to get your head around – and if they’re all meant to be on the same side, what’s up with the fighting here? Word of advice; a memory refresher is definitely due with a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) binge weekend before going to watch Civil War. That said, those of you who are clued up will know that after witnessing Superman and Batman battle it out, this is definitely the next highly anticipated superhero feud, and you can expect almost every other Avenger who’s already part of the MCU – and some newcomers – to put on the biggest and most badass display in what has been called a war movie, an action-thriller, and even a love story (the fraternal kind, that is, between Cap and his longtime friend Bucky). Here’s hoping that director duo Joe and Anthony Russo can live up to the buzz created by the Marvel fandom.
Highlights “Now, we know that the Marvel superhero ensemble can be quite hard to get your head around – and if they’re all meant to be on the same side, what’s up with the fighting here?”
The Lobster What’s it about: A dystopian drama about a near future where single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they must find a romantic partner in 45 days or be transformed into a wild animal and sent off into The Woods.
– Captain America: Civil War
“Either you’ll get all of it, or none of it. Either you’ll find it hilarious or completely bizarre.” – The Lobster
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos cast: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly Why it’s worth watching? The Lobster, which was shown to festival crowds late last year, ridicules modern society’s date-or-die mentality where everyone puts a clock on your love life. The premise of the film is that monogamous relationships are what distinguish us from beasts, and those who fail to find a partner are therefore unworthy of the human race (obvs, not! What happened to the simplicity of Tinder?). It’s strange, wickedly funny and director Yorgos Lanthimos’ ingeniously quirky satires. Either you’ll get all of it, or none of it. Either you’ll find it hilarious or completely bizarre. And if that sounds like your kind of entertainment then The Lobster will be right up your film alley.

Boxes
Not only are the Goo Goo Dolls still a thing, but this month sees the release of the band’s 11th studio album, Boxes. We’ve had a little taster of what to expect with the release of their infectious singles Over and Over and So Alive, which have both cemented a more sunny outlook from the alt-rockers’ often moody canon. So Alive is definitely our favourite, with a breezy piano melody and upbeat drum line, alongside a catchy hook. The band moved away from their garage-rock roots that drove a once adolescent fan base, to a more wishy-washy side of adult contemporary rock back in the mid-90s – this was the time when listeners weren’t afraid to leave their Goo Goo Dolls CD around for parents to find, because the songs were recognisable from the radio and nothing too rebellious! Now that fans are all grown up, the band has returned with indelible melodies, intimate, heartfelt lyrics, and an anthemic, uplifting vibe. With Johnny Rzeznick’s raspy voice belting out some possible mega hits, we’re excited to hear the rest of Boxes.
She blew the music world away with her powerful vocals and bold performance at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, and now Ariana Grande is out to prove that she’s a Dangerous Woman. Smokey, soulful and everything you’d expect from a modern-day pop album with R&B influences, Ariana’s third studio album meshes together her 90’s throwback style with her sultry, slowburning vibe - the result is a final product that finally feels like a real sound of her own. The title track sets the tone for what’s to come with a distorted guitar line and the singer’s passionate, soaring vocals adding a sense of texture and modernity that makes Dangerous Woman feel as powerful as it could be. Expect roaring rockinfluenced ballads, snazzy hip-hop beats, and all the mainstream music mayhem that Ariana has given us so far. Her fandom will love it, and it’s likely she’ll gain some new listeners too!
Linked by the exquisitely winding prose of the author’s ensemble cast of characters, What is Not Yours is Not Yours invites readers into a world of lost libraries and locked gardens, of marshlands where the drowned dead live and a city where all the clocks have stopped. Here, students hone their skills at puppet school, the Homely Wench Society commits a guerrilla book-swap, and lovers exchange books and roses on St Jordi’s Day. This collection sees characters slip from the pages of their own story only to resurface in another. A book that hits the very top of the tower of imagination.

The first novel since his Booker-winning The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes introduces readers to a story about the collision of Art and Power, about human compromise, human cowardice and human courage. It’s May 1937 and a man in his early thirties waits by the lift of a Leningrad apartment block. He waits all through the night, expecting to be taken away to the Big House. Any celebrity he has known in the previous decade is no use to him now. And few who are taken to the Big House ever return. If you loved his last book, this one will blow you away.

n a recent trip to Bahrain, we noticed that our flight was full. It was packed with families, groups of friends, couples, business people, and even solo travellers from the UAE, taking a break from the fast-pace of Abu Dhabi to opt for the more sleepy ways of our neighbouring nation. Much like the country itself, which is a blend of a welcoming, traditional culture with lively happenings and modern amenities, our choice of hotel was a clear representation of this. The Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, located just across the road from Bahrain International Airport (quite, literally), offers everything you’d expect from a five-star resort, plus so much more. At check-in we met Abdel Salaam, the happiest man with the biggest smile, who has been a part of the Mövenpick team for years. He brought out a welcome drink and a cold towel for us which was followed by a smooth check-in process, after which we went off to explore. First impressions – very good!
The Suite Life
The Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain isn’t your average high rise. Its exterior is reminiscent of the old-world charm of lavish Middle Eastern houses, while its interiors boast contemporary furnishings with classy touches. We loved the central pillar of the hotel; located in The Gallery Lobby Lounge – a magnificent indoor tree, with a large base that doubles as a dessert station during the hotel’s brunch happenings. With 106 beautifully-decorated guest rooms including 10 suites, smoking and non-smoking options, and a room that is disabled-friendly, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain quickly stands out for its variety of accommodation types. We had the pleasure of experiencing a Deluxe Room, decked out in all things luxury. Let us start off with our favourite aspects; number one has to be the bed. A HUGE king size awaits with your choice of pillow – yes, that’s right, you can select your pillow preference based on allergens and softness – how cool is that, especially if you have an allergy! 56

So, whether you’re in Bahrain for the nightlife, for work, or for complete relaxation – you’re guaranteed a great night’s sleep. Next up has to be the equally HUGE balcony (you could probably fit two more king size beds on it!). We had the most gorgeous views of the city’s skyline and surrounding waters from this lovely balcony. On top of this, there was a warm and regal feeling in this room, with dark wood wardrobes and a cosy bathroom. The L’Occitane amenities were a great bonus, while the minibar was fully stocked, the wifi was fast, and the LCD TV had a good number of channels – again, the perfect room type to combine work and play!
Foodie Feasts Ask anyone in Bahrain about food and it’s likely that the Mövenpick Friday Brunch will come up in conversation, and, rightly so. The hotel’s award-winning Friday Brunch has become somewhat of an institution with locals, expats and visitors who want good food and drinks, a lively atmosphere and plenty of choice. Variety is an understatement here; we would put money on it that every diner will find something they love at this brunch. From delicious salads, to mouthwatering meats, succulent seafood, sushi, hearty mains, a fruit station and dessert roundtable, as well as a whole room dedicated to just cheese, all your cravings can be easily satisfied in one place. You must try your choice of wok-fried or grilled meat and seafood – the shrimp is especially good – plus the exotic fruits, the yummy crepes, and the one-and-only Mövenpick ice cream. During our stay, we ordered in-room breakfast and dinner, both of which were abundantly scrumptious - especially the buttermilk pancakes and health booster drink to start the day, and the olive oil pasta to end the day. Mövenpick also allows guests to navigate their stay through a personalised space on their website, which is linked to the room. From here, you can order food, book spa appointments and so much more!
Spa Sensation
The Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is home to one of the best relaxation havens in the country; Rimal Spa. A space dedicated to the wellbeing of its guests, the spa has separate male and female areas with a variety of large therapy suites to cater for different treatments. We decided to try the Turkish Hammam and the Ocean Fresh Facial. The first took place in a beautiful hammam suite with a heated wet table. Black olive soap helps to remove dead skin cells followed by Alep soap which cleanses the skin, restoring moisture. The Kassa glove is then used to manually remove dead skin cells, before a foaming gel is used as a massage medium to deeply cleanse the skin using various techniques such as effleurage, petrisage, gliding and kneading that helps to relieve muscular tension. Application of rose perfume oil closes the hammam ritual. A shout out goes to our lovely therapist who was welcoming, professional and incredibly well-versed in the benefits of this treatment as well as being able to make recommendations on how to relax on a normal day. For the facial, the therapist uses organic and chemical-free Voya products, with the Get Glowing Face Mask being our favourite product of the treatment, due to its deeply detoxifying properties. We’re left in a state of bliss, ready to catch some zzz’s! This is the ultimate place for ‘me-time’ and to forget about all your daily stresses. Oh, and anyone who, unlike us, doesn’t want to slack on their workout routine, there’ an excellent gym to keep you motivated during your stay!
regional spotlight
The Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is far from the stiff, clinical buildings that often make up airport hotels. It has character, it’s fun and the people who work there really make it a success – every single person we encountered was helpful and informative – bravo team! Families will have a hard time tearing themselves away from the stunning pool area, friends will while away the hours at Flamingo Bar and Lounge, whilst business and solo travellers have all the comfort and facilities they could ask for, in their rooms! Adding to this, you’re only a 15-minute drive away from the bustle of Manama Souq, so discovering Bahrain is made convenient too. An all-round victory of Swiss hospitality meeting Arabian tradition, it’s no wonder the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain was awarded Best Airport Hotel Middle East by Skytrax - now, we can vouch for that! ✤ GO: Visit www.movenpick.com or call +973 1746 0000 to book your stay at the Movenpick Hotel Bahrain and for more information. fact magazine

he very first thing I remember noticing as the image of the new R8 popped up in the pre-event presentation was the absence of the instantly recognisable top-to-bottom side blades that were a hallmark of the original model. They’ve been broken up into two separate panels, one behind the b pillar and one behind the side air vent. At first I thought this was a shame, but then I let it sink in and moved past it, and was able to look at the new R8 objectively. Despite being a decade old, the outgoing R8 still looked like a car of the future, which is testament to the pioneering design of the car. And yet the design of the new 2017 R8 is sharper and more angular, and the front fascia more aggressive, which all combines to make it look leaner, meaner and even more futuristic than the outgoing model, which is no small feat! With regards to the performance, the first thing you should know about the new R8 is 62
fact magazine
that it was developed side by side with the R8 LMS customer racing car, instead of the road car coming first and the racing model being developed from that. It therefore shares a lot of technology and components with the racing version – around 50% in fact. This includes the super lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre Audi Space Frame (ASF) chassis (weighing in at only 200kg), and the 5.2 litre V10 engine. This is a smart move on Audi’s part, because it results in a road car with the power and performance of a racing car, and a racing car with the usability required for their gentleman racing drivers. What does all this mean for the road car? Well, it means a mind-blowing combination of comfort and performance in a car that feels equally at home on a track and on the road. In normal driving conditions, the ride is smooth and comfortable, with plenty of interior space and headroom, and comfortable leather sports seats. Most of the vehicle’s functions can be operated from

racetrack with all of the 610hp available. You can throw it into corners – turn in is sharp and precise with practically no understeer, and you can control any oversteer with light corrections, so balanced is the chassis. In dynamic mode, the traction control isn’t too invasive – it interferes just enough to stop you heading backwards into a wall, but not enough to feel like it’s killing the power and, as a result, all your fun. The grip and handling is spectacular, and you can confidently explore the limits of not only the car’s capabilities, but also your own, without those moments of terror that shift things from fun to not so much. There is not nearly enough space on these pages to explain all the pioneering technological wizardry that has gone into creating such a result, but we can tell you it’s a masterpiece. It’s two-in-one – a track monster, and a luxury coupe - a car that will make you feel like a hero on a circuit, and then let you wind down and relax on the drive home. ✤
the steering wheel, including stereo controls, customising the digital instrument display, and selecting drive mode. However, it’s under extreme driving conditions that the R8 truly impresses. The naturally-aspirated 5.2 litre V8 puts out 610hp on the V10 Plus we drove (25hp more than the R8 LMS version’s 585hp!) and 560Nm of torque. This equates to a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds, a 0-200km/ h time of just 9.9 seconds, and a top speed of 330km/h, making it the fastest and most powerful production Audi ever built. In addition, because of the ASF chassis and lightweight materials, the V10 Plus boasts a dry weight of only 1,454kg, which because of the mid-engine layout, is balanced almost equally between the front and rear chassis. The new all-wheel drive system can distribute torque freely between the axles, rather than the 60/40 power split of the outgoing R8, meaning that the full range of power can be sent to either the front or the rear of the car as required. This is done through the superb and lightning-quick S tronic seven-speed transmission and the intelligent Quattro drive system. The result is mesmerising. SPORTS interview
I
t looks like next season is going to be tough against Audi and Toyota – do you feel under more pressure? In motorsport there is always pressure and you always have high expectations. In 2014 we were the new kids on the block and everyone was watching us under the microscope so there was a lot of pressure. I think we did quite well in our first year, and in 2015 we won. Because we were a great team last year, I’d say there is certainly pressure because after completing two years you feel more confident and the whole team is working well together. It is a different kind of pressure now because we have such high expectations of ourselves. You’ve gone from top shelf LMP1 to GT and back to LMP1 in what was quite a short period of time. Do you see quite a big difference in terms of the LMP1 prototypes in your time of endurance racing? I started in prototypes 10 years ago with the Porsche RS Spyder in LMP2. It was a pretty simple car compared to what we have now and after the Audi era with LMP1 there was a lot of power but without the hybrid element. It was a very 66

good team back then with good success. As a driver you always want to drive and you always want to be competitive. With the transition from prototype back to GT with the 911 RSR you notice the car is a lot more alive, there’s down force, the car is a bit calmer and you can react. These LMP1 cars are quite stable until a certain point and then you have to wrestle the car back into place. It is a completely different driving style. For sure I’ve seen a difference over time between LMP2 and LMP1. LMP1 is more complex but going out to a full hybrid car like this is very different. Not only is the driving very challenging but the whole team working together means you have so many possibilities and changes, so many things you can test and things you can tweak so you need to be focussed on the main areas. Were you frustrated knowing that you had done LMP1 and then you went back to GT racing with Porsche? I wanted to be a part of the return of the
LMP1 programme with Porsche and therefore joined the GT-programme for a while. I came to Porsche 17 years ago back in 1999 and that was the first time I signed a contract with Porsche as a junior driver. I had just turned 18 and my boss back then told me that if I do well, I would a factory driver one day and I would go to Le Mans. That was back in 1999 and nobody told me it would take so long! But I always remembered that. I had this idea in my head that I wanted to fulfil that dream and achieve that goal of going to Le Mans with Porsche. Does your LMP2 experience with the RSSpyder have any importance in rebuilding the Porsche LMP programme? I think so yes. They were quite different cars but what me and Romain [Dumas] learnt in the Spyder era, such as driver economics or seat position, we could use in the LMP1. We had some guys from our Spyder time that are still with us now and I think the success we had during that time

iXOOST iPod Speaker The ultimate petrolhead’s collectible, these awesome iPod speakers are the second coolest thing to come out of Modena after supercars, but are intrinsically linked to them…
iXOOST iPod speakers are high-quality audio speakers that are made from the actual exhaust systems from famous racing cars and supercars. The concept is the brainchild of Matteo Panini and Mirco Pecorari, both natives of Modena, who have backgrounds in design and mechanics. Made in Modena (also the famous birthplace of Ferrari, Maserati, and other Italian automotive exotica), the manufacturers source authentic exhaust parts from racing teams and exotic cars and incorporate speakers, a subwoofer and electronics to make these wonderful finished products. They claim that the unique design of the speakers incorporating the metallic tubes adds a distinct quality to the audio produced by the speakers. We can’t personally attest to that, but having heard the speakers do their thing, we can definitely confirm that the audio is of a very high-quality, with a richness and volume easily on a par with other well-known premium audio speaker docks. The speakers can also be connected via lightning cable 70
fact magazine
and via Bluetooth, so you can stream from your laptop or keep your phone on you when you move around. The speakers finished with silver and green (F1 fans will recognise the colours), as you see on this page, are made using an exhaust pipe from the Mercedes AMG W04 F1 car from the 2013 season, although this one, unfortunately, is now sold. There are silver and red four-speakers too, from the OTTO (eight, for eight-cylinder) range, and this particular one is made from the exhaust pipes of an actual Ferrari 056 2.4l V8 engine from the 248 F1 car raced in the 2007 season. And the silver on silver speakers are made using a part from a Williams FW32 F1 car from 2010. Such specialised products will, unfortunately, come at a price. These speakers can set you back by anything from 6000 to 9000 Euros, depending on configuration and personalisation. If we could afford it though, we’d have one… ✤ Visit www.ixoost.it for more information.

Blazing the Steaks at Marco Pierre White “In Marco Pierre White, the brand focus is steak, but the main attention is paid to the quality of the food we put on the plates.”

CHEF’S TABLE
Marco Pierre White at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr is currently running a superb Great Steak Out promotion, so we went to have a sitdown with Chef de Partie Abhineet Ghimire, and try it out. Marco Pierre White is known for its supremely high quality and attention to detail, as well it should be, with such an illustrious name on the door. “In Marco Pierre White, the brand focus is steak, but the main attention is paid to the quality of the food we put on the plates,” Chef Abhineet explains. “We only use premium ingredients; we don’t compromise, because ultimately, the great taste of the food comes if you use the proper ingredients. Plus, we really focus on the service. As you can see, our outlet isn’t huge, but that helps us to give a personalised service to every diner, so a lower number of covers, but a higher level of service for each guest.” The Great Steak Out promotion, which takes place every Wednesday, is a meatlover’s dream: Take one of Abu Dhabi’s most prestigious steak houses – a concept created by one of the world’s most acclaimed Michelin-starred chefs – and add an allyou-can-eat steak promotion for reasonable prices in which you can order as many of the premium cuts of meat as you want, and enjoy ALL the sides along with them. You can choose between Angus Beef T-Bone, Black Angus Rib Eye, USDA Prime Striploin, and USDA Prime Rib Eye, and all are served with Italian veal sausage, delicious triple-cooked French fries, crispy Parmesan and herb onion rings, sautéed mushrooms, asparagus, baby carrots, sautéed spinach, potato dauphinoise, and tomato confit. And if you finish your steak, you can order another. BEFORE all of this, as you wait for your main, you’re presented with a delicious starter platter of Caesar salad lettuce cups, grilled vegetables, mini pizzas, mozzarella cheese and tomato, blue cheese and Wagyu salami. The standard package is AED195, the 86
fact magazine
normal ‘beverage’ package is AED250, and the premium ‘beverage’ package is just AED325. It’s an absolute bargain. “The main thought process behind the promotion is to let our guests try as many of our menu items as possible,” Chef Abhineet explains. “If a guest comes on a normal evening, they might only have one starter, one steak, and one side, but on the Steak Out they can try many things, so when the promotion is finished, they’re keen to come back for more.” However, we hadn’t come for the standard steak package. We had come for… (drumroll)… The Great Tomahawk Challenge. At the hotel’s insistence (with our offering only token resistance before “reluctantly” accepting), we made the attempt at this monstrous feat, which is just as epic as the name would suggest. To give you further indication as to how much so, you actually
CHEF’S TABLE
have to sign a waiver before attempting the challenge absolving the hotel of any liability. The words “personal injury or possible loss of life” feature in the document. The challenge is a monstrous 1kg Charcoal Grilled Tomahawk, coming with all the aforementioned sides, and a ONE LITRE beverage, all of which must be consumed within half an hour. Should you succeed, the AED650 bill will be waived by the hotel. Needless to say, we failed massively. Despite the fact that the bone alone weighs roughly 200g, that leaves an 800g steak with all the sides. Throw in the one litre of fluids, and you have a challenge that is nigh on impossible. Some have come close, but none have so far succeeded. “The Tomahawk Challenge is really just a bit of fun, an entertaining element to the evening,” Chef Abhineet tells us. “But noone has beaten the challenge yet!” Entertaining it truly is, as other diners can’t resist coming over to have a look, and have a bit of banter with the challenger. It creates quite a buzz in the restaurant, although none of the other diners, we have to say, dared to take the challenge themselves! Whether you attempt to conquer the Tomahawk or not, the Great Steak Out on Wednesday nights is a great night out for meat lovers, so we recommend you try it out whilst it’s running! ✤ GO: Call (0)2 654 3333 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

Seafood SENSATION It just walked away with the title of Best Seafood Restaurant in Abu Dhabi 2016, in the FACT Dining Awards; now, let us tell you why the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi’s super-stylish waterfront eatery, Finz, serves up something on a whole new level for seafood lovers! fact magazine

VENUE REVIEW
T
he Beach Rotana is a famous Abu Dhabi dining destination with a host of popular eateries, from Trader Vic’s to Rodeo Grill, so for a venue to stand out from such an illustrious crowd it takes something a little special. However, stand out is what Finz most certainly does. The first reason is the venue itself, which instantly impresses before you’ve even walked through its doors. This is because the restaurant sits out over the water at the end of the hotel’s private beach, and boasts glitzy views of Al Maryah Island’s picturesque skyline. Finz is an enticing combination of wooden beams and modern, stylish surfaces finished in natural materials to give an elegant, yet comfortable and inviting ambiance. The second reason is the restaurant’s service, provided by the attractive, friendly and highly professional and knowledgeable staff. They greet you with a winning smile when you walk through the door, and boast intimate knowledge of the dishes on the menu, as well as which beverages would accompany them best. However, both of these reasons would

be useless without the most important ingredient – excellent food. In this respect, Finz most certainly delivers. The menu is an eclectic mix of influences from around the world, from South American to Asia, and everything in between. You’ll find everything from delicious tangy ceviche to rich, creamy bisque, delicate fish and hearty surf and turf. Our dining experience started with a deliciously crisp and tangy Baby Spinach and Chopped Kale Salad, which came with dates, feta cheese and crispy chickpeas in a lemon vinaigrette, and the Alaskan Crab Bisque, a rich and tasty crab broth with shredden Alaskan crab meat and harissa. In a unique twist, the crab meat and harissa is served in a bowl first, and the hot, steaming broth is poured over it, releasing a mouthwatering explosion of scent that has you keen to dive in! The salad was also excellent, with the sweetness of the dates offsetting the vinaigrette nicely, and nice texture provided by the crispy chickpeas. For mains, we had the Roasted Mediterranean Sea Bass, and the Roasted Halibut with Cured Air-Dried Beef. The Sea Bass is delectably tender and

marinated beautifully, served on a bed of sweet onions, and duck confit in a tasty gravy. The Halibut was also very good, coming on a bed of smoky roasted eggplant - innovative and tasty! Our experience at Finz is a memorable one. Each of its strengths – the venue, the service, and the menu – are individually excellent, but when combined, they create one of Abu Dhabi’s finest seafood restaurants, and a well-deserved winner at the FACT Dining Awards 2016! ✤ fact magazine

head of the official launch, selected press were invited along to sample some of the delights the restaurant’s menu has to offer. Mexican head chef, Humberto Canales, plies his expertise in a vast theatre-style kitchen where home and street-style recipes are injected with contemporary sophistication; succulent cuts of meat and fresh seafood are prepared to perfection using traditional grills and smoking ovens.
Foodie corner Diners will be taken on an epicurean adventure celebrating authentic Latin American cuisine via a sharing-style menu which features the heady flavours of everywhere from Mexico to Argentina, Peru to Brazil. Dishes we sampled included an excellent chunky guacamole with Serrano chilli and deliciously spicy chimichurri potato chunks for introductory nibbles, some gorgeously citrusy sea bass ceviche and shrimp ceviche from the ‘raw bar’, and some Wagyu beef tataki and dory fish tacos for snacks. Seafood came in the form of delicious lobster flavoured with Yuzu, some incredible tiger prawn camaron ajillo and black cod bacalad, and the meat was represented by a succulent Tomahawk steak, and some exquisitely marinated striploin. All of the food was absolutely superb, with an amazing journey through Latin cuisine that will certainly have us coming back for more. Of course, no Latin venue would be complete without a soundtrack of exhilarating and energetic beats. BU!’s resident DJ, David Wachtel (aka Bass Maze) will be encouraging guests to get their smooth Latin grooves on. He has been setting the mood at hotspots in cities like Barcelona, Chicago and Lima for the past 15 years. Hailing from Peru, he is a master curator of fine tunes from all eras and corners of the world and will create the perfect Latin vibe at BU!.
Additional DJs, artists and bands from South America, London, Miami and the Balearic will also be making guest appearances. Weekly themed evenings such as Monday’s Hola Ch!cas Ladies Night and Tuesday’s Destination night, which will see BU! pay homage to a dedicated Latin American country for the night, add to the energetic ambiance of this amazing new venue. BU! is set to shake up the culinary scene in Abu Dhabi, and boy are we ready to see what this lively venue and sizzling menu will acomplish! ✤ GO: BU! is located on the 4th floor of the capital’s new dining destination, The Hub, in the World Trade Centre Mall, Abu Dhabi.
