can hardly get over how fast this summer has gone by. For all of us at FACT, it was filled with plenty of travelling, eating and good ol’ down time with family and friends. But, now that the sun has settled to pave way for pleasant temperatures, we thought it only right to get you excited about the cooler months ahead. From al fresco dining to pool and beach days, the city is packed with SO MUCH to see and do when the weather permits. Turn to p25 and start planning your time outside – bye bye a/c, hello breezy days! Also, check out the very first Sunset Festival, a massive music event happening at Zayed Sports City (p8), set to take fans on a nostalgic ride back to the 90s. Some of the biggest artists from everyone’s favourite decade of music will be coming out to Abu Dhabi for a full day of entertainment. We caught up with the one and only Gabrielle ahead of her big performance (p21). Arts takes centre stage this month too, as NYUAD lines up an incredible programme of free events for the public. From exhibitions to music, film, theatre and more, you’re likely to find a number of happenings to peak your interest. Turn to p42 and mark your diaries with the all-important dates. This is also the month where your style change can really shine through. Our fashion pages are packed with new collections and pieces to inspire your autumn looks and there’s something for everyone. Begin your wardrobe overhaul starting p65. Whilst it’s cooling down outside, Abu Dhabi’s hospitality scene is turning up the heat with a slew of new dining deals and promotions to enjoy throughout October. Head to p81 and get to turning the pages for your ideal lunch or dinner spot this month. There’s plenty more on Oktoberfest, Pinktober, Halloween and other happenings throughout the magazine – take your pick! One more thing - we went a bit pun-crazy this issue - after all, there’s nothing better than a good food pun - how many can you spot? Winter is definitely coming and I wish you all an amazing one!☺

Q&A: Gabrielle FACT caught up with 90’s music icon Gabrielle, ahead of her performance at Abu Dhabi’s first ever Sunset Festival this month…
H
i Gabrielle! How excited are you to be performing in Abu Dhabi? I’m so excited to come out and do the show! Last time I was there, I did pretty much everything; camel riding, dune bashing in the desert, I had a blast. My band are really excited too and we’ll be playing all the hits from the archives and throwing in a couple of new ones. On twitter some of the fans made suggestions of songs they haven’t heard me sing in such a long time, so I can’t wait! Are international audiences different from the UK crowd? When I’m abroad, you never know what to expect but I always have a lot of fun. The audience has a lot of love, and I’m more surprised to see people you wouldn’t ever think to have heard of you, singing your songs and telling you when they first heard your music – it’s incredible! To me, love is love, no matter where in the world I go. How has performing on stage changed since the 90s? For me, it doesn’t feel that different but what is different is the audience interaction. In the old days, you didn’t have phones facing you or before you’ve even finished your show, somebody’s tweeting about it with pictures – and it’s all done in real time. All of that is so much fun and you just have to go with the changes. It’s not fan mail anymore, it’s Twitter and meet and greets, but I’m enjoying and embracing it all and how the industry has moved on.
Has your music changed alongside the industry? I stick to what I know. For example, when you look at Adele – she’s a classic singer – her music is original which can be made faster with a mix if it wants to be. We had so many different bands using that dance element and now it feels like we’ve almost come full circle. You’ve got to remember that taking songs and rehashing them, or sampling and covering them has always happened. For me, it just goes around, everybody is still taking a little bit of something from someone. Even Oasis were like a modern day Beatles!
when you meet people like that it’s a ‘wow’ moment. They have talent beyond belief and he was somebody I really admired and loved, and to get to meet him was amazing.
And who has a bit of Gabrielle in them? OMG! I don’t want to insult anybody [laughs]. In terms of when people talk about me, they mention Adele, but I just think she’s far more superior that I ever could have been! She’s just Adele through and through - the most amazing singer/songwriter. There’s no gimmicks, she just has to stand there and sing.
What’s the secret to your longstanding success? Just staying true to myself. The moment you lose sight or faith in what you’re about and trying to achieve, that’s when it becomes less enjoyable. As long as you stay true to you and true to your craft, you’re going to have a blast. Plus my family too, they’re great! It’s been a healthy career and I’ve definitely found a good balance. The other big thing I would have to say is the people who come out and watch my shows, and the fans who buy my records. They’re the ones who sustain me and allow me to maintain this level. I’m just happy that as long as I can write songs and make music that people can connect to, we’re all in a good space. I couldn’t do it without those people! ✤
Do you get star struck? All the time! I remember meeting Prince, in Abu Dhabi actually. It was incredible –

Free, public performances at The Arts Centre, nyuad, include Disco Manila, a celebration of the late 70’s Philippines through Filipino popular music and live karaoke; Yellow Brick Road, a modern take on The Wizard of Oz with the NYUAD Theatre Programme; and Driss El Maloumi & Debashish Bhattacharya come together in collaborative debut as the string virtuosos play the Moroccan Oud and Hindustani slide guitar together.
What: Disco Manila When: October 6, 8pm (concert), October 7, 4pm (live band karaoke) Where: East Plaza, The Arts Centre Get down to the disco sounds of the late 70’s Philippines in a celebration of Filipino popular music as Spanky Rigor and Roger Rigor, co-founders of VST & Company, and The Union [featuring Jet Montelibano, Jessica Casas, Nino de Jesus, Jo-ann Visitacion, Fulton Montoya] lead a celebration of Filipino Disco. Rooted in an amalgam of American soul, funk, and disco origins, this euphoric dance music mixed with Filipino melodic traditions, filtered through the warm glow of the Manila Sound. After the stars come out on Thursday night, the audience takes center stage on Friday afternoon, singing choice dance tunes from the rich and groovy Disco Manila catalogue in a special live band karaoke.
What: Yellow Brick Road When: October 12 to 15, 8pm (matinee performance on Oct 15, 2pm) Where: Black Box, The Arts Center Yellow Brick Road is a bold theatrical adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, under the direction of Tomi Tsunoda. This devised theater project uses Baum’s classic novel as a launch pad for exploring contemporary conversations around climate crisis, displacement, bureaucracy, survival, and dependency. Combining conventions of traditional Japanese performance forms with both found texts and original performance material developed by NYU Abu Dhabi students, Yellow Brick Road aims to fracture this iconic American fairytale and reimagine it as a prism for examining the narratives of global crisis. For guests aged 14+.

Invisible Threads What: Invisible Threads: Technology and Its Discontents When: October to December 31 Where: NYUAD Art Gallery This exhibition explores the tensions that emerge in our everyday relationships with technology, looking at such issues as isolation vs. connectedness, and privacy vs. social media. Invisible Threads will present a nuanced discussion of a global topic, framed by the region’s complex relationship to the benefits and pitfalls that accompany technological advances. The artworks expose these institutional and aesthetic frameworks of control, pulling back the curtain on a part of our lives that we have come to take for granted. The curators hope to generate dialog and reflection around our use of these everyday tools. Created by Tony Award- and Obie Award-winning playwright/singer-songwriter Stew (Passing Strange) and co-composed with his Obie Award-winning, Tony-nominated longtime collaborator Heidi Rodewald, Native Song is spirited and engaging a “concert novel” exploring Baldwin’s life and work that is already acclaimed by audiences in Harlem and San Francisco. What: Holoscenes When: November 16, 17, 18, 4pm to 9pm Where: Welcome Center, The Arts Centre Lars Jan’s Holoscenes is a large-scale performance-installation that embodies the trauma of flooding. It is a visceral, cross-disciplinary project born out of the widely-shared concern that our troubled relationship to water will become the central issue of the 21st century. The project directly connects the everyday actions of individuals to global climate change, while contemplating the evolution of our capacities for empathy and longterm thinking. Presented in public space, the centerpiece of Holoscenes is a large aquarium that floods, drains, and floods again. The flooding aquarium is inhabited by a rotating cast of performers conducting everyday behaviors sourced from collaborators across the planet. Lars Jan is a director, writer, visual artist, and the founding artistic director of Early Morning Opera (EMO), a genre-bending performance + art lab whose works explore emerging technologies, live audiences, and unclassifiable experience.

What: Arab Voices: Here/There/Then/Now When: November 26, 2pm and 7pm; November 27, 7pm; November 28, 7pm Where: Black Box, The Arts Centre Arab Voices: here/there/then/now is a festival of staged readings featuring plays by Arab and Arab-American writers and their diverse stories of life in Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Lebanon — as well as in their characters’ adopted countries — and illuminates lives behind the headlines with candor, generosity and humor.
THE HOUR OF FEELING Written and directed by Mona Mansour It’s 1967 and the map of the Middle East is about to change drastically. Fueled by a love of English Romantic poetry, Adham journeys from Palestine to London with his new wife, Abir, to deliver a career-defining lecture. As the young couple’s marriage is tested, Adham struggles to reconcile his ambitions with the pull of family and home. But what if seizing the moment means letting go of everything he knows?
FOOD AND FADWA Written by Lameece Issaq and Jacob Kader Directed by Shana Gold
OH MY SWEET LAND Written and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi Written in response to a journey taken by Zuabi and Corinne Jaber to the Syrian refugee camps in Jordan, where they met people “in the harshest moments of their life, yet still they were generous, full of grace, hope and even humour… this piece is inspired by their stories, but more than anything it is inspired by their spirit — that elastic rubber-like ability man has to adapt and weather the storm.”
Meet Fadwa Faranesh, an unmarried, 30-something Palestinian woman living in Bethlehem in the politically volatile West Bank. Known for her delectable cooking and deepseated sense of duty to her family and aging father, our kitchen maven insists on continuing the preparations for the wedding of her younger sister, despite constraints of daily life under occupation. Politics blend with family tensions to create a sometimes humorous and sometimes heartbreaking meal. This new play melds the fight a Palestinian family wages to hold onto its traditional culture with its need to celebrate love, joy and hope. ✤ fact magazine

Big Screen Inferno What’s it about: Robert Langdon’s morals are called into question when he becomes a suspect in a deadly plot that promises to end in global disaster. He must fight against the clock to solve his most intricate riddle yet in order to save millions and guarantee his freedom. Director: Ron Howard cast: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan Why it’s worth watching? Tom Hanks is back in the role of one of his most loved characters, Robert Langdon, after a seven-year hiatus. As always, his performance is somewhat in the range of near perfect, something we’ve come to expect from the actor – especially after his other current hit Sully – but, here, it’s the addition of Felicity Jones as Dr Sienna Brooks that has us excited. Her brilliance shone through in The Theory of Everything and her performance in Inferno has shown she isn’t just a one trick pony, pulling our every sense into the role and taking us along for the ride. The storyline, although similar to the previous films, is still just as thrilling and moving. The element of uncertainty throughout keeps you right on the edge of your seat and the vast historical references will keep any keen learner occupied and enlightened. The European scenery doesn’t disappoint either, beautifully captured throughout. This film really is one for all tastes, whether you love the tension of a fast-paced thriller, or you enjoy a good brain teaser, you’re guaranteed to be left wide-eyed and mentally enriched.
Highlights “The element of uncertainty throughout keeps you right on the edge of your seat and the vast historical references will keep any keen learner occupied and enlightened.”
Boo! A Madea Halloween What’s it about: Madea is given the duty of making sure a group of unruly teens behave on Halloween, however, things take an unexpected turn when mysterious events begin to occur. After running into a whole host of paranormal beings, Madea starts to realise that the teens are going to be the least of her problems.
– Inferno
“Humour is the hook of this movie and there’s plenty of LOL moments that will have you curled over. ” – Boo! A Madea Halloween
Director: Tyler Perry cast: Bella Thorne, Brock O’Hurn, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Tatro Why it’s worth watching? Halloween breeds plenty of classic horror, so it’s refreshing when something a little different comes along. Humour is the hook of this movie and there’s plenty of LOL moments that will have you curled over. Yes, it’s silly but that’s exactly what it wants to be; the typically ridiculous storyline, the intentionally unrealistic costumes and the unrelenting satire all make this film addictively enjoyable. We’ve seen this formula before and without Tyler Perry’s performances, this film would be comparable to them all. His characters make this film what it is; a childishly good Halloween comedy.

BIOGRAPHY
The Gratitude Diaries By Janice Kaplan
GARAGE/DANCE INDIE/POP
Gameshow By Two Door Cinema Club
The third album from the Irish indie band takes the best of their earlier music and throws in influences from some of the greatest musicians of this century. Before its release, Alex Trimble said that this album took inspiration from the likes of Prince and Bowie, and from what we’ve heard of the album, that claim has come to fruition. There’s plenty of pop, but it’s obvious that the band has broken all barriers to go outside a number od different genres in the most unusual way doing what they feel to be right, creatively. The high-pitched vocals, teamed with upbeat guitar riffs make this album undeniably catchy, whereas the psychedelic vibes give the tracks a dreamy feel that resembles the best of the Bowie era. We can’t help but think that the record missed out on becoming a summer anthem with its Fall release, but nonetheless, it’s bound to propel Two Door Cinema Club to new musical heights.
In our modern society, gratuity can be sparse and often at times we forget how effective it can be, in all aspects of our lives. This is the notion that Janice Kaplan decided to explore one New Year’s Eve after promising herself she would live gratuitously for a year to see if it had any lasting effects. This beautifully witty diary follows her journey, seeking advice and gaining insight from the most unlikely places and allowing us to be encouraged and empowered to go and live our best life.
Following My Intuition By Craig David
Craig David has become the unlikely comeback star of the year, rebranding himself and giving us some hard-hitting performances. Given that he was one of the biggest stars of the noughties, this new album has a lot to be beat. He’s moved away from the R&B and sunk into Garage and Dance, keeping his classic melodies but combining them with MCing and elements of Rap, something that has been well-received, even by longtime fans. The new album hosts a number of collaborations from some huge Grime names, ensuring that these new tracks will be massive across the dance scene and will no doubt fill the airwaves upon release. Craig David seems to have achieved the impossible, reboot a successful music career and still be as relevant now as he was back then; this is one album to be seriously excited about.

HOTEL HOTSPOT
The name Four Seasons is synonymous with 5-star service and impressive surroundings so when we walked into the brand’s newest property in Abu Dhabi, located on the vibrant waterfront of Al Maryah Island, let’s just say that the word “wow” was uttered many times. Did we expect anything less? Absolutely not! You’ll be greeted by some of the warmest and friendliest staff as well as being offered a hot or cold towel (depending on the weather) and a welcome drink at check in. As far as first impressions go, this was pretty spectacular. The lobby is HUGE – it’s home to the beautiful Al Meylas lounge where one of the best afternoon teas in the city is served up. Stylishly decorated, for a lobby venue it’s an incredibly sophisticated and comfortable space
with natural light coming in through the tall windows. Dubbed the “living room of Abu Dhabi” where comfortable sofas and armchairs will make you feel as though you’re lounging at home, in a modern majlis setting, Al Meylas is the ideal place to marvel a sunset whilst sipping on a variety of flavourful hand-selected teas, artful coffees and non-alcoholic cocktails accompanied by sweet and savoury delicacies of Emirati cuisine with an innovative twist. We would highly recommend trying the superb Arabic afternoon tea, featuring yummy local specialties including hummus, mutabal, whole-wheat pitta and mini zaatar manakish alongside an array of sweet treats including kustawi date, almond brownies, muhallabia, rice pudding and saffron sago panna cotta – the latter was definitely our favourite! But hold on, that’s not all that makes this dining experience a special one. As an authentic gesture of hospitality, guests gathering are offered a scent from the lounge’s partner, Tola Perfumery. Tola showcases eight evocative fragrances to capture the hearts of aficionados looking for excellence, craftsmanship and genuineness. Each scent tells a story of its own. Inspired by Qahwah (Arabic coffee) and Bukhoor (incense) which remains to be the symbol of Middle Eastern hospitality and rich tradition, the Tola smelling cups, found on each Al Meylas table, have been developed to combine and capture the Gulf-ingrained customs introducing them in a unique way. If, like us, you can’t choose just the one fragrance, you can blend two together and create your very own unique Tola scent! And all of this is even before we tell you about the room!
DELIGHTFULLY DELUXE When we walk into what is to be home for the next few nights, we find the Deluxe Room to be not only practically designed, but surprisingly spacious too. There’s a lovely living area complete with a comfy sofa and a large, adjustable table for dining. A separate work area has everything you could ask for, and more, in terms of enough sockets to charge all your gadgets and devices and plenty of space to lay out important papers or books. And when you need to catch up on emails, finish a presentation or meet a deadline, just look up and out of the window at the breathtaking water views, which should help to ease any stressful situation! Everything is controlled via an iPad which really is the height of hi-tech living, and throughout our stay the controls for everything worked flawlessly (even the powered curtains). Furnishings of soothing blue and grey created a relaxing atmosphere teamed with the white and grey marble bathroom that boasts a separate deep soaking tub and shower – THIS is exactly what you need after a day of sightseeing or shopping. If that’s not enough, the bathroom also has Ferragamo amenities (generously stocked daily) and an in-mirror TV which we were enthralled by. In the room, a well-stocked refrigerated private bar and a complimentary espresso and tea maker, a 55-inch HD TV, in-room safe, bedside charging stations, and probably the most amazing thing of all, the customisable King Size Four Seasons Bed – with your choice of mattress topper, and down duvets and pillows – this made for some of the best sleeps we’ve ever had when travelling! fact magazine

SPA SENSATION
When relaxation calls, Dahlia Spa celebrates the water with abundant fountains and views of the Arabian Gulf. The eight spacious luxury spa suites – including one exclusive couples’ suite – all feature private showers and most offer windows, giving the option of natural light or soothing darkness. Here is where we experienced the innovative Signature Dahlia Massage, a customised blend of individually chosen oils and massage techniques – you’ll receive a unique treatment to suit your wellness needs. Add to that the incredible heated sand beds (with sand that is speciallyimported from Pakistan for its healing properties) and you’re in for a one-of-a-kind treatment unlike anything you’ve tried before. Afterwards make sure to check out the facilities or kickback in the relaxation lounge on the heated beds – it’s the best feeling!

menu, and the soon-to-be-opened Butcher & Still and Café Milano, you’re going to be spoilt for choice with quality cuisines. Perhaps one of the most noticeable things we picked up on during our stay is the great attention to detail and care that has gone into the design, planning and running of this hotel. Like the number of plug sockets in rooms, the Middle Eastern touch throughout the hotel, and the incredibly helpful staff for whom nothing is too much of an ask. Perfectly embodying the luxury that is associated with
the Four Seasons, this Abu Dhabi hotel has elegantly married a trusted brand ethos with local elements – like displaying over 2,000 pieces of culturally connected artwork from local and international artists – to pay homage to the capital’s Arabic culture with a warm welcome and generous hospitality. ✤ GO: Visit www.qatarairways.com to book your direct flight from Doha to ABU DHABI. and Rover are truly four-wheel-drive specialists. Since 1948, they’ve been wheeling out a variety of models from their workshop, including the world famous Range Rover. Almost 70 years later, the masterminds behind these top quality vehicles are still breaking the barriers with their everimproving and advanced offerings. Enter the Range Rover Sport. The forward-thinking approach to this design makes it difficult to know where to start when describing this SUV’s components. But here goes. When looking at the design, the enhanced boldness of the exterior is obvious. Power and class is what it exudes, shouting out its improved capabilities before the ignition is even engaged. The body is both modern and sleek in nature. Slightly longer than its predecessor, this 7-seater SUV is still shorter than its would-be competitors, allowing it to be manoeuvred with relative ease. The longer wheelbase ensures additional comfort for those riding in the back. Aerodynamics have been another major consideration of the creators, with many features receiving an upgrade to ensure an eight percent improvement in this area on the previous model. The profile has been rounded and streamlined, the angle of the

windscreen adjusted and the roofline carefully sloped. A trimming of 144mm on length, 55mm on height and 45kg on weight all contribute to the success of this undertaking. So what other features does this sporty SUV boast for motoring fans? The Range Rover Sport’s on-road capabilities have been hugely improved. This is obvious when experiencing its enhanced handling capabilities and general dexterity of the vehicle. Wheel-travel is in a class of it own (260mm front and 272mm rear), providing the excellent wheel articulation of 546mm which in turn, allows for maximum control in the most challenging of environments. The re-engineered air suspension system with its new +35mm intermediate setting means the off-road mode can remain available at much higher speeds (80km/h up from 50km/h) than previously possible. This is ideal for scarred dirt road conditions. A recent addition is the electric power steering, characterised by a lighter, more direct steering feel. fact magazine

The default front-rear torque split of 42/58 percent is designed to provide a rear-wheel drive bias for optimum driving dynamics. Here, leather, studs, laser-cut denim, checked details and aggressive prints are combined with bomber jackets, camouflage, military greens and technical fabrics. And on the more active side, with parkas, reversible down coats, neoprene, acetate, maxi zips and thermo-taping. Expressed in hues which are powdery rather than full, with a vintage feel. On a more glamorous side, tailoring is reviewed towards a definition of new casual – smarter, urban, and more relaxed. Tones of black, grey and royal blue is also present. HER It’s all about volumes, fabric mixes and luxury processes, marking out the oscillations between glam sport and urban biker, boho and sartorial androgyny, smart athleisure and galaxy projections. According to the tenets of sport luxury, active-wear shapes and designs are matched with glamorous materials and processes. Thus sweatshirts, t-shirts and maxi dresses are combined with lace, matelassé faux leather patches, sequins, maxi zips, fringes, lurex and passementerie. Fabrics are lightweight and semi-transparent, while faux leather is seen in jogging and basketball trousers. The heritage biker is synonymous with leather, laser-cut denim and aggressive tees. A more bohemian spirit is seen in faux-sheepskin outerwear, woollen ponchos, long fringes and jacquard alpaca knitwear. Meanwhile the appeal of androgynous tailoring shows in low-crotch chinos, overcoats, dresses and shirts in light fabrics, while not forgetting the heritage check proposed in overcoats, maxi skirts, dresses and blouses: from crêpe to wool. All About The Grill “Using fresh products that have just been delivered makes such a big difference and helps me as a chef to make our guests’ dining experience unforgettable.” - Chef Christian Rosse fact magazine
81
CHEF’S TABLE
IT WAS A COMBINATION OF FASCINATION, SKILL AND THE RIGHT CHALLENGE THAT BROUGHT CHEF CHRISTIAN ROSSE TO BEACH ROTANA ABU DHABI’S RODEO GRILL. We had a FABULOUS time AT this Chef’s Table, GETTING TO KNOW THE MAN BEHIND THE FOOD...
Chef Christian Rosse started his career in 1997 as an apprentice in Germany. After finishing his apprenticeship, he packed his bag and worked throughout Europe and joined many kitchens of Michelin starred restaurants to get the ultimate cooking experience and to see as many different styles and techniques of preparing food, as possible. Eventually, in January 2015, he joined the Beach Rotana family. After working in Europe for several years, Chef Christian felt too young to settle down. He had a friend working at the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi who told him about the re-opening of Finz, the fabulous seafood restaurant at the hotel. Following a visit to his friend and taking a look at the project, he met the hotel’s Executive Chef to learn more about the exciting renovation. Electrified by the venue and the idea, he applied for the position as Specialty Outlet Chef and became part of the team. Since March 2016, Chef Christian has also been tasked with taking charge of the hotel’s steakhouse, Rodeo Grill. He talks us through his food philosophy: “To me, cooking is like celebrating our environment,” Chef Christian says. “Using fresh products that have just been delivered makes such a big difference and helps me as a chef to make our guests’ dining experience unforgettable. “In my opinion, having a fantastic meal is pure joy. Eating great food lets me forget daily troubles for a moment, and it turns any celebration into a truly special occasion - or even a regular day into a memorable experience,” he adds. When talking about the love for his job, Chef Christian explains it’s all about his team. “I enjoy working with 82

an international team and sharing the passion for food with so many different cultures,” he says. “In Rodeo Grill, I am able to only use specifically selected products; for example lobster, foie gras, scallops or our fantastic meat cuts, such as Tomahawk Steak from the US or Iberico Cattle from Spain. “That simply makes my job so much fun, and I really get to enjoy what I do. On top of that, we prepare most of our dishes in our Josper oven. This cooking method underlines the extraordinary flavours of our ingredients even more so, and makes every dish extra special,” he continues. “When I started to create the new menu, the main focus was to source exclusive products and use them in the best possible way, all the while keeping their natural characteristics and flavours. When I look at the menu now, I can proudly say we have achieved that mission.” Rodeo Grill is an impressive venue with sleek, dark timber décor making the space cool and contemporary with a slight masculine vibe. We start with the Scottish smoked salmon, which is fresh and delicious, served with potato chive salad and honey mustard dressing.
Menu Scottish Smoked Salmon Ahi Tuna Sashimi Stack 300g Tenderloin Steak 50g wagyu rib eye
CHEF’S TABLE
We also sample the ahi tuna sashimi stack which is equally fresh and light, served with layered avocado and citrus soy – just imagine the flavours - divine. It would be a crime not to choose a steak and there are so many tasty options including cuts of tenderloin, sirloin, rib eye, T-bone and wagyu. We are partial to the tenderloin so we go for the 300g cut served with mushroom sauce and baked potato. The steak is perfectly cooked and it’s the exact cut of meat that we had been craving. We also try the 250g wagyu rib eye that has been grain fed for 450 days. This is a seriously exquisite steak and melts in your mouth like butter. We opt for it to be cooked rare with Chimmichuri sauce - just perfection. When at home Chef Christian is happy with simple but well chosen food. “I enjoy sliced sun-ripe tomatoes from my terrace, on an oven-warm sourdough bread with curd cheese, chopped onions and chives, drizzled with an extraordinary olive oil and salt and pepper,” he tells us. “That makes my evening every time. Even more important than what I eat at home is with whom am I eating. I enjoy a meal in great company, with my family or friends the most. To me, dining at home is the time to chat, relax and rest after a busy working day.” We couldn’t agree more! ✤ GO: Visit Rodeo Grill at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi. Fine Dining For The Win When was the last time you visited a restaurant that served up high-quality, classic French cuisine, good enough to shout about? VENUE REVIEW
I
n a place like Abu Dhabi where a new restaurant with another new concept pops up every other week, it’s getting increasingly challenging to bring freshness, creativity and, more importantly, consistency, to the food scene. However, our recent visit to the French fine dining restaurant Bord Eau made for a culinary experience that ticked all the boxes. You’ll enter a chic and elegant dining room, the kind that
86
fact magazine
you’d expect to find in a grand manor house, decorated in opulent fabrics and furniture with large, comfortable chairs and warm mood-lighting to keep the ambience intimate and relaxed. Bord Eau also gets two other crucial things right: the food and the service. Sophisticated French cuisine is prepared by passionate chefs who use seasonal fresh produce and serve each dish with an artistic expression. The dishes on the menu come with just the right amount of intrigue; you’ll recognise a lot of
ingredients, but many unusual pairings will have you excited for what’s to come. Take our entrées: Green Vegetables Homemade Pie with slightly acid whipped cream and young shoot; and Seared Foie Gras with cherry marmalade. Our first thoughts were “whipped cream with vegetables… hmmm” and “foie gras with cherry… really?” – but, very quickly, our doubts were put to rest. Not only did both the dishes look beautiful, the whipped cream added richness and a silky texture to the golden-crust

pastry and mix of tasty vegetables, whilst the sweetness of the cherry gave an enhanced flavour to the perfectly crispy foie gras – amazing! Sous Chef, Jimmy De Almeida, who recently joined the Bord Eau team, is now responsible for the menu at the restaurant. He tells us that the biggest element of French fine dining lies in the quality of the ingredients and how you treat them – something that he learned from cooking in his grandmother’s kitchen. Chef Jimmy
is currently in the process of changing up and adding new and revived dishes to the menu, all incorporating seasonal ingredients that are mostly brought in from France. For seafood lovers, we’d highly recommend the Line Caught Sea Bass from “Concarneau” Bay – it’s slow cooked and comes with baby beetroot and fennel, topped with citrus vinaigrette. It’s the combination of flavours and textures that make this main dish a hit. Take the sweet, gentle and tender beets with the subtle taste and buttery chew of the sea bass, and the incredible citrus vinaigrette, which was simply divine. Meat eaters should go for the Milk-Fed Veal Rack on a bed of delicious crispy chickpeas with a variety of fresh vegetables. The meat will be cooked to preference and is rosy with
a clean, delicate beef taste – we loved it! Dessert blew us away! The “Gariguette” Strawberry Soup – a yogurt sorbet perfumed with basil and mint on a make-shift strawberry pastry, hugged by a lip-licking strawberry soup. Trust us when we say – it will change the way you look at fine dining sweet treats (and strawberries), for the better, of course! Bord Eau offers a superb a la carte menu and daily specials, but for anyone who wants a fine dining fix, go for the blind tasting menu, which will give you the ultimate Bord Eau experience. To maintain a peaceful environment, children under 12 years old are not permitted in the restaurant – which makes this a great place for a date night, anniversary meal, or intimate gathering. It also means that service is more attentive and personalised too, something we witnessed through all the great staff at the restaurant. We can’t wait to go back and check out the new dishes that Chef Jimmy introduces for diners – make sure you get in on this food gem too! ✤

FOODIE CORNER
A
re you a foodie with a love for cool restaurant concepts? Well, you’re in for a treat as the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island presents a modern interpretation of a 1920’s prohibition-era, Chicago-inspired steakhouse with the opening of Butcher & Still. Butcher & Still is a contemporary steakhouse, serving prime-cut American meats, great sides and classic cocktails. Sleek contemporary design contrasts the retro décor elements, featuring rich dark woods and distressed leather banquettes. Eclectic details continue right into the bathrooms, where bullet casings accent the tile work, echoing the glory days of Chicago’s gangster era. Located off the lobby, this vibrant restaurantbar has a capacity for over 250 guests, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The main dining room features a retractable wall opening onto the terrace – providing abundant sunlight and spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf and the city skyline. The menu showcases prime cuts of highquality American meats, featuring USDA natural Black Angus from Creekstone Farms in Kansas. There’s a 1,800-degreefahrenheit oven for searing alongside a charcoal grill and a smoker. An antique bread oven is a showpiece, baking fresh, aromatic Parker House rolls. Traditional American desserts include cheesecake, pecan pie and lemon meringue tart – how yummy does that sound? Sam Ioannidis, General Manager, at Four Seasons Hotel said: “Butcher & Still is a detailed project of passion, our very own retro-modern Chicago steakhouse. From authentic Aga style ovens, distressed leather seating to the most exclusive private dining experience in the city, the restaurant presents a truly distinctive and remarkable concept.” The focal point of the bar is the world’s 90

most impressive cocktail-making machine: a reproduction of an antique hand-operated cocktail shaker. Known as “Crawley’s Imperial Shaker,” it’s one of only a few in the world and the only one in the Middle East. Recreated from a 19th-century line drawing, the machine is the vision of spirits industry expert Jason Crawley, an Englishman now based in Sydney, Australia. He first came across the drawing while flipping through a book at a store in New Orleans, and then set about bringing the design to life. Made of brass, solid silver and cast iron, it’s a combination of old-fashioned quality and contemporary craftsmanship.
foodie corner Jason claims: “It’s the pinnacle of the whole idea of drinking in the fanciest possible way.” One look at the impressive contraption and you’ll agree! Operated by crank, the machine shakes cocktails in an unexpected elliptical motion – adding theatre and humour to the cocktail experience. It’s a piece of art that people visit Butcher & Still just to see. As Jason explains: “I didn’t want the machine just to be an ornament. I really want it to be used. I knew it would make people smile, laugh and connect.” To make the prohibition-era experience fully authentic, a secret passageway leads down two levels via private elevator to the ultra-exclusive “Hideaway” - a private venue reminiscent of a true speakeasy. Discreetly hidden, the venue is not publicly listed and there is no general access. It may only be booked by knowing a Four Seasons insider. This one-of-a-kind venue includes a dining area for up to 18 guests. The bar is designed as a replica of Al Capone’s prison cell, while the Cadillac Lounge is inspired by the interior of Capone’s legendary 1928 bulletproof Cadillac. Here guests can sample collectors’ edition vino and rare vintage cigars. It’s the ultimate in exclusivity in Abu Dhabi and it’s now open for the stylish crowd to try! ✤ GO: Visit Butcher & Still at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island. f you’re in need of the perfect spa treatment in luxury surroundings, then Emirates Palace Spa is your answer. This wellness haven is large with a lovely, relaxed vibe; low lighting and Moroccan décor help to create a mellow atmosphere. We love the pathway leading to the spa with symmetrical lines of Moroccan lamps on either side. We fill in our consultation form while refreshing ourselves with a cold towel and a zingy cranberry juice with mint. After being ushered upstairs to our treatment room, the décor is, again, a huge standout. The whole spa has a beautiful Arabic setting with gorgeous mosaic tiling in bright colours. Our treatment room is what you would expect of Emirates Palace – completely extravagant yet elegant with dark timber and gold touches. We’re here to try the 60-minute Deep Pressure Massage and the Hydra Renewal Facial. It begins with a soothing foot ritual; the feet are submerged in a warm bowl of water with white, red and
HEALTH & WELLNESS yellow rose petals and are cleaned with a delicious jasmine scrub. While we’re doing this we strike up a conversation with our friendly therapist about the areas of concern to be focused on during the massage. Following this, the journey to utter relaxation begins with choosing an essential oil – we opt for the sweet magnolia for its stress relieving properties. The treatment bed is beyond comfortable with double duvets and lots of cushioning – unlike anything we’ve experienced before in a spa. The deep pressure massage is tailored to focus on specific areas of the body to release pain and knots. The massage aims to enhance muscle recovery and reduce stress from daily life. Our therapist starts on the upper back, as this is our most troubled area (probably from hunching over a computer all day long).

it for all the busy bodies out there! It’s then time for the Hydra Renewal Facial which is new on the spa menu and we’re really excited to try it out. This facial works in three phases to, firstly, extract impurities from the skin whilst maintaining hydration, followed by a microdermabrasion resurfacing procedure to remove lifeless skin cells.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
“Emirates Palace Spa is the kind of place that will truly take you away from whatever is going on outside; once you’ve stepped foot through the doors, you’re in a safe sanctuary of calm and complete serenity.”
The final renewal stage combines LED therapy with an electroporation infusion of serums into the skin to restore the natural glow and radiance. Targeting to treat fine lines, wrinkles, oily and acne prone skin and hyper-pigmentation, this treatment is ideal for all skin types, especially if you have breakouts, blemishes and excess oil. WHAT ARE SOME OF Your favourite cultural hotspots in the city…
What’s coming up at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi for the rest of the year?
We are spoilt for choice in Abu Dhabi. I find the Mother of the Nation Park to be a local treasure; the botanical gardens and the many festivals held there are outstanding. The annual Qasr al Hosn Festival is a must do; it is quite possibly the best authentic Abu Dhabi edutainment on offer. And most Fridays, my family and I indulge in the Best of the Beach Friday Brunch, relaxing with our friends and enjoying the delicious innovations of our culinary teams.
Beach Rotana will proudly continue to work tirelessly as the flagship of the Rotana Brand. We look forward to a successful “peak season” here in Abu Dhabi. We continue to welcome new MICE and tourism markets to the destination. F1 looks to be strong this year. This festive season, we are launching some enticing new events, which I am sure will become popular attractions for residents and visitors alike. And of course, we have some very special things planned for New Year’s Eve.
Abu Dhabi’s Annual Tradition returns Opening October 5th, until October 14th Live music daily from 18.00 Advanced reservations for group bookings strongly suggested, minimum charge of AED 100 per person Food-Musik-Gemutlichkeit Only at the Beach Rotana...
