A Food Chronicle: The Story of my Life...
“
First we eat, then we do everything else. - M.F.K. Fisher
I
f I was to ever write a book, you’d better believe that there would be an entire chapter dedicated to food. It’s the one common factor in the world that can bring people from all walks of life, cultures and backgrounds together - no matter the language barrier, the unfamiliar ingredients and the complete lack of being in your culinary comfort zone. This is what I love about a good plate of food - it’s a universal language and a great ice breaker. With that said, and as our team prepares for (and recovers from) the 4th annual FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi, we thought it only fitting to take you on an Epicurean Expedition around the world. How? Turn to p27 and begin your voyage with our pick of some of the world’s best cuisines and dishes to have gone viral on the gastronomy scene and, more importantly, we tell you where to try out these fabulous offerings in Abu Dhabi. This is also the month that you’ve all been waiting for - we’ll be hosting the 4th annual FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi in early April with hundreds of hospitality and food and beverage players in attendance. Here’s a final reminder of all the nominees (p39) and we’ll be revealing the winners online in April, and in the next issue of FACT too! Staying on the delicious track to all things tasty, this month’s dining features are an absolute treat. Our Culinary Spotlight takes place at the most flavourpacked restaurant in town, Teatro, Park Rotana Abu Dhabi (p81), whilst the Foodie Corner takes a sophisticated turn at Ray’s Grill, Jumeirah at Etihad Toers (p85), and On the Menu unwinds to a casual spot with beautiful tea traditions at Leopold’s of London, Nation Galleria (p89). There’s no excuse to be staying in every night! As usual, we bring you the best in fashion, tech, motoring and local staycations to name but a few of the fun pages you can find in our April issue. There’s something for everyone! I hope you all had a chance to pull your favourite (and funniest) April Fools’ jokes. Now, before the month slips away - get planning and happy reading! ☺

Sweet Symphony THE NSO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IS TAKING ITS FINAL PUBLIC BOW WITH A GALA EVENING ‘A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES…THE FINAL CURTAIN’, ON APRIL 27 AT THE EMIRATES PALACE HOTEL AUDITORIUM.
THE ULTIMATE IN ORCHESTRAL performances awaits music fans in the city. Music Director Andrew Berryman has created a stylish and exciting programme for the orchestra and chorus: the iconic Star Wars title theme, the swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean, Offenbach’s toe-tapping Can-Can from Moulin Rouge, the tear-jerker Ladies in Lavender theme, Strauss’ hilarious Die Fledermaus opera overture used in Tom & Jerry’s A Night at the Hollywood Bowl, Orff’s epic O Fortuna from Carmina Burana, and Tchaikovsky’s powerful 1812 Overture. With its mission to nurture Emirati talent, the gala evening will be enhanced by original orchestral music by two Emirati Composers: Hamad Altaee, an Etihad Airways pilot, and UAE’s first Emirati female Composer, Eman Alhashimi. Both have performed with NSO under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture. NSO will also perform pieces by up-andcoming Italian Composer Federico Torri. NSO Founder & Executive Director, Mrs Janet Hassouneh, said: “Over the past seven years, every concert NSO Symphony Orchestra has performed has been a musical tour de force, but as the UAE evolves into the cultural capital of the Middle East, more and more orchestras from other countries are being invited to perform. “However, there will always be a need for a UAE-based orchestra of excellence and, as many of NSO’s musicians have played in these world-class orchestras and their own national orchestras, NSO will continue to perform for government, corporate and private events across the emirates,” she added. Over the past seven years, NSO has performed superb 8

orchestral pieces in concert, such as, Tchaikovsky’s 4th and 5th symphonies, Bernstein’s West Side Story Symphonic Dances, and a full production of the opera Hansel & Gretel. The orchestra has also been contracted to accompany Andrea Bocelli when he sang for some 10,000 people at du Arena in 2016, and to perform live at the screening of Disney’s animated film, Frozen, in 2016, as well as many other great world sporting events. Although NSO Orchestra & Chorus will perform publicly for the last time on April 27, the NSO Music Agency will continue to supply the NSO Symphony Orchestra, classical and contemporary music ensembles and soloists for government, corporate and private events, as well as commercial brand launches. The evening gala on April 27 is at 7.30pm; younger adults may like to attend the matinee at 4.30pm, which is also an ‘open rehearsal’, a fascinating opportunity to watch the orchestra and chorus at work, and see how a piece of music is shaped and polished by Maestro Berryman and the musicians as they prepare for the gala evening. ✤

THE REBRANDED LEVEL LOUNGE is an urban space that boasts contemporary and minimalist interior design. The pure lines of the glass house, the nude lighting effects, the essential colours of white, grey and blue, all set the stage for an elegant evening rendezvous. Surrounding glass partitions and ceilings mean Level Lounge will be open even during the hot summer months, giving guests a fresh, crisp, year-round experience to enjoy 360° views over the shimmering skyline, with the pool stretching into blazing Abu Dhabi sunsets. Italian – Pizza Margherita
Japanese – Sushi
The margherita is a humble combination of dough, tomato sauce and cheese, and if cooked with good, fresh ingredients, it can prove a highly satisfying meal. Though the pizza all over Italy would be more than palate-pleasing, it’s actually the birthplace of the margherita – Naples – where you’ll find the most appetising choices. It was in 1889 when chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi, created a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil), for Queen Margherita of Savoy, when she visited Naples. Since then, the modest pizza has grown into one of the most recognisable symbols of Italian food culture.
Sushi looks so simple and pretty, but it is in fact an intricate dish in terms of presentation and knowing which flavours work well together. One thing’s for sure though, sushi is causing a dramatic shift in dining habits the world-over. The nigiri and tuna rolls we eat today are a far cry from the pungent, rice-less, barrel-fermented stuff that originated in the 3rd century B.C. Now we have pinwheel-shaped rainbow rolls and sushi masters trading their raw fish skills with culinary connoisseurs. Trying sushi in Japan is a must, but we have to say, this region does sushi and maki rolls, excellently. WHERE TO TRY:

British – Fish & Chips
Thai – Pad Thai
Definitely the most famous of all food in England. This great comfort food can be enjoyed as a greasy takeaway, traditionally wrapped in white paper, or in a more upscale environment at restaurants too. We recommend a trip up north to English counties like Lancashire or Yorkshire, where fish and chips is still the go-to dish and mostly enjoyed with a side of mushy peas, and this is also where you’ll find some of the best ‘chippies’ in the country to pick up your own bag of this hearty, hot dish. Here’s a tip – sprinkle loads of salt and malt vinegar all over and tuck in!
Some might consider this nothing more than a regular noodle dish – even its origins come from China, not Thailand. However, the popularisation of the dish is credited to Thai authorities and in particular the late Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who introduced and promoted pad thai in his campaign to establish Thai nationalism and modernise the country. Well, if Thai restaurants and food vendors worldwide are any indication, the campaign definitely worked. Pad Thai is made with chewy, stirfried rice noodles, vegetables, bean sprouts, peanuts, and egg, among other things like dried shrimp, garlic, red chilli pepper, and even more unusual ingredients like banana flowers. In Thailand it’s the most commonly served street food, packed full of flavour and a great option for a fast and filling meal. . WHERE TO TRY:

Latin American – Ceviche
Mexican – Fajita
Latin American food seems to be going through a resurgence in the UAE and although you can find some excellent fare from the continent in Abu Dhabi, there’s one dish that can make or break a place; the ceviche. The newest “in” dish is actually an old-world recipe and possibly South America’s best-kept foodie secret. Ceviche is seafood prepared in a centuries-old method of cooking by contact between any acidic concoction of citrus juice and your choice of fish and seafood. Often, there might be avocado, mango or another “fresh” component. The history of ceviche is somewhat disputed between Peru and Ecuador. There’s as many varieties of ceviche as the people who eat it, and the beauty of this dish is simple flavours which can be enjoyed as an appetiser or a bigger main course.
The fajita is no doubt the product of the ethnic melting pot that makes up the American table. Fajitas appear to have made the quantum leap from campfire and backyard grill to commercial sales in 1969, putting Tex-Mex cuisine (a blending of Texas cowboy and Mexican panchero foods) on the world map. Back in the day, it was skirt steak that was a prime ingredient for the delicious fajita but nowadays – anything goes. You can fill up a fajita with pulled beef, tasty chicken strips, black beans, grilled shrimps and so much more – the choice is yours and the combo is heavenly.

Chinese – Dim Sum
English – Afternoon Tea
Thank the Cantonese people for introducing the world to dim sum which has a rich history and tracks back to the days of ancient China when travellers along the Silk Road broke their journey by stopping at tea houses. It was discovered that drinking tea helps digestion, so small pieces of food were offered with the tea. And so, the tradition of dim sum or yam cha (drinking tea) began. Dim Sum refers to small bite-sized dishes which can be savoury or sweet and prepared steamed, baked or fried. Tastes, flavours and fillings are of a great variety – from Shrimp dumplings (siu mai) to bbq chicken buns (char siu bao) and even veggie gyoza – this has to be one of the best food exports to come out of China.
Ok, so it’s not a type of cuisine but it’s definitely one of the most popular food trends in Abu Dhabi, and the world. Afternoon Tea dates back to 1840 England when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. What we love about this tradition is the mix of sweet and savoury servings – from finger sandwiches packed with cream cheese and salmon, to delicious cakes and pastries, and, of course, mouth-watering scones adorned with clotted cream and jam. In this part of the world, Afternoon Tea comes in all forms – Arabian, Oriental and British too.

South East Asian
BBQ
Probably the most diverse of all cuisines – the term South East Asian is applied to everything from noodles to bento boxes, curries and stir-frys so if you find a place that does it all – take a seat and tuck in. There are many staples of Asian cuisine – rice, noodles, spices, herbs, exotic vegetables and even meat. In Thailand, you’ll find lemongrass is a widely-used ingredient, whilst in Malaysia coconut rice is a popular serving and Indonesia is known for its Sambal Kecap (Chili and Soy Sauce). Flavour and palate-pleasing textures define this variety-filled cuisine.
This feast needs no introduction especially as we’re currently enjoying the last of what’s left of the BBQ season. Though it’s not clear where the term BBQ, or barbeque/barbecue originated – according to Time magazine, the conventional wisdom is that the Spanish, upon landing in the Caribbean, used the word barbacoa to refer to the natives’ method of slow-cooking meat over a wooden platform. Whether it’s over an outdoor pit, in the oven or sizzling on a grill, the popular method of slowly-cooked meat is as patriotic as it gets when it comes to throwing a true summer party or garden soiree!

Indian – Biryani
Taiwanese – Bao
By far India’s ultimate rice dish! Be it with chicken, lamb, prawns, or vegetables, this is a lavish dish that visitors to India absolutely need to try. It’s speculated that the Mughals introduced the modern biryani to India, which is made up of rice, a number of spices and your chosen meat and/or vegetables. This is a rather sophisticated and skilled dish to prepare; you can make it pakki, meaning cooked, where the cooked meat and cooked rice are layered, or you can prepare biryani the kacchi way, where raw marinated meat is layered with raw rice before being cooked together. Our favourites include the mouthwatering Hyderabadi biryani and the super spicy Memoni biryani.
The Baozi, or more informally called the “Bao” originates in Taiwan – much to the surprise of food fans who often mistaken its origins in China. Though there are a number of different styles of Bao eaten all over Asia, it’s on the streets of Taiwan that the Bao was born. Here, the Gua Bao is made by folding over the flat steamed dough and is thus open, showcasing the yummy fillings. In many Chinese cultures, these pocket buns are often eaten for breakfast. Due to the long history of Chinese immigrants in Malaysia, the Malays have also adopted their own way of making baos. It seems that this little doughy snack has transcended all cultures and is now gaining popularity in Abu Dhabi as well.

The Artists Amira Al Awadhi Amira Al Awadhi was born in Dubai and currently lives in Sharjah. Through her analog photography, she deals with personal insecurities, social judgment and ways in which she deals and overcomes. Al Awadhi’s practice began with graphite portrait drawings and acrylic paintings. She only started photography in 2014. She was never a photographer but she fell in love with the process of developing film and printing it. She came to adore the intimacy of the darkroom where it was only her, her art and her music. Her first series, ICEBERG, won the photography category of the 2016 International Emerging Artist Award. In the same year, she was shortlisted for The Gulf Capital- ADMAF Creativity Award. In February 2016, her work was exhibited at the Greenville Museum of Fine Art, Greenville, NC, USA. Alaa Mahmoud Alqedra Alaa Mahmoud Alqedra is a Palestinian-Swedish artist born in Dubai, UAE. She graduated with honors from University of Sharjah’s College of Fine Arts and Design. She creates sculpture, installation, and drawing using household materials. Alqedra’s work playfully invites us to view our relationship with utilitarian objects. Alaa uses the material of concrete to recreate images that she remembers from her childhood — the dollhouse, Lego bricks, teddy bears, kitchen objects and other figurines of animals and dolls — and is now lost to her because the place that she now lives in and works is all about concrete. Her fondness for objects stems from her experience as a displaced Palestinian who is searching for familiarity in the foreign spaces that she passes through, creating a sense of belonging through these activated moments of asylum. n the outskirts of Abu Dhabi is one of the most wellknown hospitality brands – The Westin. Only here, it’s fringed by swaying palm trees and far-reaching dunes of green grass where golfers meet for a round of putting. Unlike the high-rises of the city, The Westin feels like it was made for that all-important need to get away from it all. Just the drive up to the hotel lobby sets the scene – a very country-style stone structure awaits to be discovered. In fact, the hotel’s website proudly states “City close, country quiet” and we couldn’t think of a more fitting description. The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is the hospitality heart of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, a 27-hole championship course, home to the PGA European Tour Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. And it’s this laidback setting that immediately has us at ease. The front desk staff are very pleasant to deal with and check-in is as smooth as can be. From the lobby, you can see out onto the golf
course and in the afternoon or at sunset, it’s a great place to be for beautiful dusk views.
COSY COMFORTS Our Twin Deluxe Room is a spacious size at 45sqm. The beds look good enough to jump on (but, first we Snapchat!). There’s a private balcony through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, overlooking refreshing views of the golf course surrounded by the resort’s landscaped gardens. The décor is kept neutral for a tranquil vibe – they really want this to be your very own sanctuary. Ideal for visitors who might want to nip to the city for shopping and sightseeing, or laze by the pool all day, but want a quiet lair to come back to after a long day. A min-bar, in-room safe, flat screen TV and good WiFi connection means that you get all your usual mod-cons. We love the mood-lit, tiled bathroom. It’s big enough for two people to share and though our shower head was broken (very promptly
FOOD ON POINT If there’s one thing that The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is known for in the city, it’s the Bubbalicious Friday Brunch. The buzz at brunch, as soon as you walk into Fairways restaurant, is what will instantly put you in a great mood. The place is packed and we love people watching as colourful food stations of fresh salads, sushi, appetisers, meat and seafood, stir-fry, dim sum, wontons, satay and the most lavish dessert section, are all devoured by families, friends and those celebrating a special occasion! It’s one of the most interactive brunches we’ve visited in Abu Dhabi, with a spread of international cuisines and a range of live cooking stations. We loved the freshness of the ingredients and the dishes on offer – the grilled sausages and carvery station in general were a huge palatepleaser, as were the Arabic-inspired starters and the Chinese New Year specials (The Westin changes things up to celebrate any specific world events to reflect this at brunch!). fact magazine

In fact, our biggest surprise was the kids’ corner. We found ourselves (willingly) passing by for the delicious prawns and the fish fingers. Of course, we kept things sophisticated and tried ALL the cheese from the cheese counter too – a heaven send for those who prefer a savoury end to their meal. Dessert is just on another level – it’s a trip down memory lane as jars and jars full of penny sweets and rainbow candy remind us of our childhood days – what a great idea! The relaxing but lively Friday afternoon feast is accompanied by live music which adds a nice soothing touch to the surroundings. The good quality food continues throughout the outlets as we find when dining at the Shades Pool Bar. Our lights snacks include a fresh Caesar salad and a Grilled Shrimp Fajita – all are generous portions packed with flavour. In the evening, we’d highly recommend dining at the hotel’s Italian restaurant: Sacci. It serves up one of the yummiest and most authentic Parmigiana’s that we’ve tasted, followed by a liplicking Four Cheese Pizza, Asparagus and Prawns Risotto and, of course, the very traditional Affogato - Vanilla Ice-cream with Hot Moka Coffee and Whipped Cream- and the unusual, but tasty, Basil Pannacotta, Passion Fruit Compote, and Mandarin Jelly. Word of advice: leave room for dessert!
RECREATION GOALS The Westin is all about revitalised living and the facilities at this hotel represent that notion very well. Set some time aside to experience the Heavenly Spa which embodies their healthenhancing philosophy, enabling guests to immerse themselves in a unique world of physical and mental renewal. Signature techniques are offered in one of six treatment rooms as natural materials and sleek modern textures create an organic, luxurious and stylish setting for sublime serenity. It’s like bringing the outdoors inside for an earthy feel. If you’re looking to wind down or a pre-dinner pamper, the massages, facials and body treatments on offer are simply breath-taking. During the day, you can workout at the well-equipped gym followed by a tan session by the lagoon-shaped pool. The familyfriendly environment of the 700m2 main pool, with its adjoining children’s area, is perfect for a refreshing swim or a rest by the water’s edge. The 250m2 lap pool, meanwhile, flanked by palm trees and featuring a unique wet deck area, is sure to leave swimmers reinvigorated and recharged. And, if you’re up to it, a round of golf is easily accessed – right on the hotel’s doorstep! The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is one of those hotels that transports you away from city life, but is still very much close to and within reach of everything the city bustle has to offer. We’d say it’s the perfect choice for a weekend staycay because you get the best of both worlds! ✤

As far as 5-star hotel brands go, The St. Regis is one of the world’s most renowned and opulent hospitality choices. The brand’s regal interiors and destination-specific exterior makes The St. Regis stand out in what has become a crowded market. The Dubai property is no exception. Resembling a majestic French country manor house or a faraway imperial palace, The St. Regis Dubai, Al Habtoor City extends the legacy of the Astor straight from New York to the UAE. Located on the arterial Sheikh Zayed Road, the hotel’s interiors are influenced by the city’s beaux-arts architecture of the original St. Regis in New York, and accentuated by bespoke elements such as the grand staircase and carefully selected artworks dotted around the hotel. And what a GRAND staircase it is. The second we walk into the lobby, it’s phone’s out because this is one for the ‘gram. We could happily lounge about in this lobby all day long, drinking tea and coffee, and casually doing some work on the laptop. Alas, the room awaits us. We’re greeted with a warm smile and the check-in staff make a great first impression. They’re very efficient, fast and friendly, and before you know it, we’re up and in our Deluxe Room.
DELUXE LIVING The hotel boasts a variety of rooms and suites – all decked out in the most sumptuous furnishings. We’re talking the kind of classic charm that you’d find in a sprawling apartment on the Upper East Side of NYC. fact magazine

With contemporary residential style and subtle aesthetic refinements, the Deluxe Room greets guests with a soothing colour palette of delightfully merged pastel tones. At 55m2 it’s a large space that has a very cosy, suburban feel. We could imagine having this as our bedroom layout should we ever happen to live in one of said apartments in any affluent areas of NYC. The walls are covered in elegant paper, whilst everything from the chaise longue to the work desk, the chic blackout curtains and the soft carpet too are all the kind of choices that only a high-end interior designer could make. To put it simply, whatever you vision when someone utters “tasteful” or “classy” – that’s what you’ll find in this accommodation. A huge King Bed is so neatly done that we almost don’t want to even touch it. But when sleep calls, we slip in between the plush sheets and have a wellrested night. All the rooms and suites at The St. Regis Dubai come with complimentary Wi-Fi as well as Butler Service – bonus! You’ll find all your usual comforts in the room including a well-stocked mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, plenty of water bottles, lush bathroom amenities and lots of storage – in fact, the walk-in closet is a beautiful surprise, as is the Manhattan-ready double-vanity bathroom with a deep-soaking, traditional white bathtub and marble all around. There’s no fighting here for sink time, and even the separate shower has a marble seat inside for a more leisurely start or end to the day.
FOOD FINESSE When it comes to food at The St. Regis Dubai, you’ll be spoilt for choice with eight restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from. Tempt your palate with haute cuisine, unwind at one of the exclusive lounges, and spend time with friends at the courtyard café or sample gourmet beverages by the pool. The food and beverage options here embrace simple aromas and the buzz of the fashionable society of Dubai. Hot off its win as the Best Steakhouse in Dubai at the 2017 FACT Dining Awards, we decide to check out the one and only J&G Steakhouse for dinner. Again, from the second you enter, there is a mood-lit, jazz bar vibe straight out of New York. The venue is the kind of sophisticated that you’d expect in a top-notch 5-star hotel that prides itself on refinement. Offering a collection of steakhouse classics, you’ll be greeted with an interior of natural dark wood, glamorous light fixtures and leather upholstered furniture; this is American steakhouse favourites presented with a modern flair. With premium meats, a variety of seafood and a comprehensive beverage list of robust vino and handcrafted cocktails, J&G Steakhouse is every fine-dining lover’s dream. fact magazine

We would highly recommend the Grilled Black Pepper Octopus with Tarragon Purée, Onion and Lime - possibly the best version of Octopus we’ve tried in the city; and the Smoked Short Ribs with Parsnip Mousseline and Pickled Asian Pears – an innovative and tasty entrée. From the grill, we opt for the 180g Master Kobe Wagyu Fillet and the 320g Australian Black Onyx/Range Valley Striploin, with a side of Truffle Macaroni and Cheese, Potato Gratin and Creamed Spinach, and the Chimichurri and Peppercorn Sauce. There’s also an excellent choice of soups and salads as well as a “simply raw” section on the menu and, of course, delectable desserts like the mind-blowing Coconut Baked Alaska Rum Flambe. Satisfied is an understatement – you’ll be comparing every next meal to the one at J&G Steakhouse for a long time. For those who really want to get involved during their stay, the hotel also offers cooking classes and the must-try Caroline Astor Afternoon Tea – both will elevate your St. Regis experience.
you’re staying in the cooler months, take advantage of the walking weather and check out the neighbourhood! We have only four words to sum up our stay: we will be back! ✤
WELLNESS WIN Although the location of the hotel isn’t by a beach, you’ll instantly feel a very calming and serene vibe running throughout the property. The outdoor pool is flanked by lush greenery, making it feel like you’re on the rooftop of a stately New York building on a summer’s day! Refresh and unwind here while enjoying the personalised service of the pool butlers. Complimentary offerings are available throughout the day, including fruit sticks, smoothie tastings, sunscreen spritzing, refreshing cold towels and more. A 24-hour fitness centre and an impressive Iridium Spa are also at hand for those who want to keep up their workout and relaxation game! Part of Al Habtoor City, Dubai’s first-ever integrated urban resort, The St. Regis Dubai sits alongside two other hotels, three high-rise residential towers, and a Las Vegas-style theatre that are all collectively located on the banks of the breath-taking Dubai Water Canal. When Nissan unveiled the new 2017 Altima, it was clear that the motoring giant was ready to play in the big leagues. The much-loved mid-size sedan has had a total do over and FACT got behind the wheel to put the car through its paces…
T
he Altima is already a popular model in the UAE and the region. In fact, if we got 10 dirhams for every Altima we passed on the roads on a daily basis, let’s just say that we could probably quit our day job. Drivers love the Altima for its reliability, its no-fuss features, its ability to accommodate the family but also cater to the needs of the the every day businessman, and, of course, for its performance. When all’s said and done, the Altima is what we’d be inclined to call “The One” in the real world. So, it’s no surprise that Nissan wanted to raise their game and bring a new and improved model to its fleet. A fresh new appearance means that what we now face is a more aesthetically-pleasing body that isn’t just a beauty from the outside, but also comes packed with the goods under the bonnet and inside the car. Firstly, it’s the sleek exterior of the 2017 Altima that sees a noticeable change. The front end of the vehicle offers the most dramatic change with its energetic flow design, since all panels and pieces forward of the A-pillars are new – fascia, bumper, fenders, hood and lights. Many manufacturers have created cars that may resemble the front of the 2017 Altima (2017 Subaru Legacy, 2017 Mazda6 and even the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu), however, few have managed to execute the slick subtlety of design that Nissan has. 66

Two key elements are the redesigned V-Motion grille and boomerang-shaped headlights, similar to those found on the Maxima. The look is dramatically different from the 2016 Altima design, with a wide, deeply sculpted lower bumper, integrated fog lights (2.5SV, 2.5SL, and 3.5SL models) and prominent chrome-trimmed grille. The reshaped headlight units incorporate halogen high beam and projector low beam lights. LED projector low beam lights and LED signature Daytime Running Lights that sweep into the wide raised hood (available only on 3.5L SL grade). The rear of the 2017 Altima is marked by a new sculpted bumper with a dark lower accent, a new trunk lid and lower, wider boomerang-shaped combination lights that help provide a more expressive, higher quality appearance when approaching the vehicle from behind. The four-piece combination lights incorporate the tail and stop lights, turn lamps and backup lights. What makes the 2017 Altima more of a success is that Nissan took onboard customer feedback and added comfort features such as the standard Zero Gravity front seats which have been reshaped, and the woven cloth seating and door panel materials feature a more open weave pattern, providing a premium look and feel throughout the Altima interior. Luxury inside a mid-class vehicle – yes, please! Twin cup holders on the centre console now accommodate mug handles in response to customer input, so anyone who likes to take their morning coffee in a personalised travel mug, doesn’t need to worry about spills! What we loved about the interiors of this car is not only the amount of space and leg room for each passenger but the super functional seat adjustments

that could be easily adjusted and set to literally any position that was comfy for the driver. Yes, they have this feature in every car these days, but in the 2017 Altima, there was a sense of ease and efficiency and no “faffing” around – the seat does exactly what you want it to. It’s the little things that count, right? Along with the revised appearance, The X-Tronic D-Step CVT equipped in the 2017 Altima is among the quietest in its segment. This model has also improved in its coefficient of drag – to 0.26 Cd from the previous 0.29 Cd* (currently similar to the GT-R). The changes come from the addition of an active grille shutter (three percent gain), underfloor aero cover additions (three percent) and the new front and rear fascia and windshield designs (four percent). All of this defines into being best in class with standard fuel economy of 13.2 KM/L. And this is a feature that we can attest to – having done a few trips up and down the E11, stopping for petrol wasn’t a frequent occurrence and for that reason alone, we’d highly recommend the 2017 Altima. Nissan has also stepped up the safety technology by adding its First in Class Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), the Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The new steering has been reshaped and tuned to provide real time road input and precision (available only on SL grades). These have to be the features that REALLY went to work out on the UAE roads. If there was traffic, the PFCW was a great tool to have in giving the driver a safe prediction on how much distance to keep between themselves and the car in front of them, whilst the FEB was a good reminder of constantly paying attention to when other drivers come to a sudden stop or slow down. The 2017 Altima’s refined interior design follows the new Gliding Wing design language. Central to the new look is the revised C-stack with available 5.0-inch and 7.0-inch displays for the Navigation with Mobile Apps. When it came to the in-car system – we were able to connect faultlessly every time and had no issues with anything from music to navigation, radio frequency or making calls from the steering wheel. Traditionally, the Nissan Altima is a family-friendly sedan that has been around since the early 90s. It’s grown over the years as it’s gone through a number of redesigns. In our resident petrol head’s opinion, the 2017 Altima is a progressive vehicle that is just as ideal for the suit-and-tie executive as it is for the nine-to-five parent on play date duty. And as the saying goes: “get you a car that can do both” – this might just be THE ONE. ✤
GO: THE NISSAN ALTIMA 2017 IS OFFERED IN FIVE GRADE LEVELS INCLUDING 2.5 S, SV, SL AND 3.5 SV AND SL GRADES, RANGING BETWEEN $21,500 AND $28,900 IN THE GCC. VISIT WWW.NISSAN-ME.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

SIGNATURE SOUND One brand that has well and truly cemented itself as a leader in the audio game is B&O Play. Thoughtful, forward-thinking and innovative when it comes to giving customers what they want, B&O Play’s newest market entry – the H9i headphones – brings new features to complement the way we live with sound, teamed with the latest Bang & Olufsen Signature Sound designed to overwhelm you with precision, power, and detail.
I
t’s amazing to track the revolution of the headphone. Long before tech moguls like Steve Jobs created the white earbuds and Dr. Dre took over with his Beats, the humble headphone’s ancestors were used by everyone from 1881 telephone operators to 1910 US-navy issued devices, the widely popular AKG K120’s hit the market in 1949, and a decade later, the world’s first ever electrostatic pair of headphones by Stax debuted in Tokyo. Not to mention, the biggest drop in headphone history came with the Sony Walkman in the late 1970s – followed by progressive designs like Bose in 2000, earbuds to accompany the iPod in 2001, all the way through to the 00s with Beats by Dre and now with sophisticated tech advances and style revivals. Fast-forward to 2018 and you’ve got the H9i. Now, let’s be honest, not everyone is into your kind of music in the office and when you’re blasting your favourite tunes into the ear canals, you don’t want a screaming baby on the plane or the sound of traffic horns on the road to disrupt your listening time – this is where the H9i excels. Proving to be a supreme listening experience, the wireless Beoplay H9i has improved ANC; the hybrid Active Noise Cancellation performs even better between 300-800Hz, meaning that the cancellation of human voices and surrounding sounds is more effective than ever before. The sound quality is enhanced too with the introduction of a bass port that ensures optimal and more powerful bass. That means, more good music, and less distractions! Perhaps our most favourite feature, and one that every headphone junkie will appreciate is the Proximity Sensor. Imagine, you’re at your desk, walking along the street or even at the gym, enjoying a great song or interesting podcast and you
need to remove your headphones for a few minutes to make a call or to have a quick convo with someone - this smart feature will automatically pause your music or video streaming when you remove the headphones. When you put the headphones back on, the music or video starts playing again from where you left it - pretty impressive. Due to a more optimal circuit design, the Beoplay H9i achieves better performance with up to 18 hours - four hours extra playtime from Beoplay H9. On top of this, there’s an additional microphone dedicated to improving voice quality. However, what makes the H9i truly special is its modern, urban design with a slight retro twist. Beoplay H9i comes with an even slimmer ear cushion design, reshaped anodized mono arm and enlarged aluminium discs with mesmerising touch control to give the headphones an even more elegant appearance. Moreover, the ANC microphone grill on the housing has been upgraded for a cleaner design expression, and the battery removal solution is more secure with the removal of the aluminium disc from the left ear cup. In another century when the future generation looks at the history of headphones from the 00s – you can bet that the H9i will be amongst that audio conversation. ✤
GO: BEOPLAY H9I IS NOW AVAILABLE IN BANG & OLUFSEN STORES, ON WWW.BEOPLAY.COM/H9I AND AT HARVEY NICHOLS. PRICES START AT AED2,199. INCLUDED WITH THE HEADPHONES IS A COTTON CARRYING BAG, A 1.25M USB-C CHARGING CABLE AND AN AUDIO CABLE. fact magazine

SURPRISES Teatro at Park Rotana Abu Dhabi is a surprising find. T
eatro has a bold theme inside; with a large portion of the restaurant given over to a glass wine cellar and a small but inviting bar. Over in the dining room, guests will discover both a show kitchen and livesushi counter. The decor comprising of deep red curtains, Venetian masks and chunky chandeliers make for a space that is part West End theatre and part boudoir, leaving team Fact feeling as if we’ve stepped into a sequence from Baz Luhrmann’s epic musical Moulin Rouge. At first the concept feels a little jarring, and we’re unsure exactly how the theatrical setting (complete with posters from famous musicals The Phantom Of The Opera, Evita and The King & I) fits in with a menu featuring multiple international cuisines. Thankfully, Teatro’s diverse menu of Thai. Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Italian flavours, under the pretense of “East meets West” works remarkably well and much like the Venetian play masks that cover the wall, the food offers the same illusion of subtle fusion done exceptionally. Much like the stage curtains draped from the ceiling, dining at Teatro represents dinner as a ‘show.’ Take the cocktails for example, presented in truly unique ways – think metal vats, clay cups and quaint wooden boxes overflowing with ice. Our favourite has to be the Downtown Tokyo, a beguiling blend of sake, spirit and ginger. Dinner begins with a pleasant mix of appetisers that included Wasabi Coated Prawn Tempura. A great dish presented in an Asian-style wooden box and home to some of the biggest prawns we’ve had the pleasure of eating. With a light batter and just a hint of wasabi the intricate flavours are really given the opportunity to shine. The sushi selection is also exceptional with the thinly sliced salmon and tuna sashimi making for a particular highlight. Yet it was the Yellowtail Samba that really stood out. A remarkable fusion of Japanese sushi and Mexican soft-shell taco, which in theory shouldn’t work, but with two very different textures, it’s a wellexecuted dish that diners are unlikely to find elsewhere in the capital. As we fully embraced the concept of 82

Teatro putting on a show, we begin to connect more with the food. Admittedly it was a struggle to pick a main course from a seemingly endless list of Asian treats, Western signatures and monthly specials. With everything from Miso Seabass to Roast Duck, Butter Chicken and Risotto Funghi on offer, the variety is certainly good, though we did require a little guidance in whittling down our selection. After sampling Japanese during the appetisers, we decided to go for Indian and Chinese for the main courses. Selecting Buddha’s Delight (stir fried prawns, mussels, scallops, calamari and udon noodles) and the Chicken Tikka (tender chicken marinated in Tandoori Masala). Both dishes hit the mark with the wok-fried noodles providing a nice hint of chilli amongst its mix of Asian-inspired ingredients.
An operatic showmanship comes to fruition in the final act with the presentation of the dessert course offering diners ‘The Big Show.’ A sharing platter showcasing taster portions of every dessert from Teatro’s menu! Presented on a lazy Suzan piled with ice and adorned with exotic fruits, the Big Show feels like a Russian roulette of desserts! Rotation of the platter allows diners to appreciate the desserts’ full spectacle and is visually one of the more impressive that we’ve witnessed in some time. There’s mochi, lemongrass creme brûlée, chocolate truffles, coconut gelato, matcha cake, watermelon snow and banana fritters completed with a delectable dulce de leche dipping sauce. Give into Teatro’s charms and you’ll be rewarded with an innovative dining experience. From immaculate

A
bu Dhabi boasts a plethora of top-notch steak restaurants with new eateries opening every year. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is well known for its excellent array of fantastic restaurants and Ray’s Grill certainly impresses. This restaurant is located on the 63rd floor and has some of the best views in the capital. The space is very low lit with small, intimate private dining rooms or seats in the main restaurant. There’s lots of chrome, pendant lighting and everything you’d expect from a stylish restaurant at this hotel. The kitchen is open and buzzing with chefs turning out excellent cuts of meat and tasty entrees. On the evening that we visit the restaurant is packed and somehow it manages to create a high-end vibe that is also relaxed. Service is excellent but not stuffy. We are warmly welcomed and shown to our table and offered an aperitif from the well stocked bar cart (offering bubbly and all sorts of drinks) but mainly focusing on spirits. We choose a boutique gin with soda and the waiter crushed up some botanicals in the large glass. This is an excellent idea and sets the mood for the evening. We peruse the menu which is large and offers up cuts of beef from Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Ireland to name but a few places. The entrees also look very enticing and we settle on the prawn cocktail and beef carpaccio. The prawn cocktail is very inventive (almost like a deconstructed version of the classic). Large juicy prawns are placed atop crunchy romaine lettuce with slices of orange and cucumber and roasted nuts. There’s also a citrus dressing which adds a nice touch. This is a fabulous dish and we were suitably impressed with it. The beef carpaccio was also a hit, with fresh and butter soft beef served with fried goats cheese. When it comes to choosing a good steak it comes down to preference and the great thing about this menu is that the offering is large and varied so it will suit any meat eater. We opt for the 300g Australian Wagyu and the 600g Irish T-Bone. We order mac and cheese, sautéed mushrooms and creamed 86

spinach for sides. Another great touch at Ray’s Grill is the amazing variety of different salts, peppers and mustards that are on offer. Again, it comes around to your table on a trolley and if you aren’t quite sure which ones you would like the helpful staff will give you a nice choice based on the cuts of meat you have chosen. We have a rare white pepper from India and a classic sea salt from The Murray River in Australia along with a few French mustards which are strong in flavour but still nice and smooth. Both cuts of meat are absolutely delicious. The sides add beautifully to the steak. We’d highly recommend ordering the Mac and Cheese for an indulgent treat! The restaurant is upscale and contemporary, a great place for a group or an intimate dinner should you want to amaze someone. ✤

TEA Traditions Coffee culture is definitely at its peak in the UAE, just wander through any mall or busy city street and it’s the coffee shops that are heaving with customers in search of their daily caffeine fix. ith a number of branches located throughout the Emirates, all of Leopold’s of London’s locations have been well planned, situated in upmarket areas and desirable locations - the Beach at JBR, Riverland at Dubai Parks and Resorts, and the flagship branch in Abu Dhabi’s Nation Towers overlooking the corniche and Marina Village. Consistency is the key and aside from the reliable food, coffee and tea, each of Leopold’s interiors follows the same format of sleek blacks contrasted against white marble and f an abundance of leafy green vegetation. Fresh pastries vie for attention, amongst the chemistrylab coffee brewing contraptions and a vast tea library home to more than 75 different varieties of tea, many of which can be found exclusively in the UAE at Leopold’s of London. Like many cafes in the region, Leopold’s is about more than just coffee and cake. With the markets demand for more substantial food taking precedence, the menu at Leopold’s features something for everyone via an extensive list of sandwiches, salads, pizza, pasta, grills and of course… the desserts. We enjoy the Bresaola Caprese, taking the traditional Italian salad of tomato, basil and mozzarella and adding thinly sliced beef bresaola to proceedings. Yet, it’s the sweet pesto that makes the dish, representing simplicity at its best. Similarly, the health conscious slant and focus on trending superfoods make both the Pearl Barley with Eggplant and the Kale and Broccoli salads, exciting choices for those in search of something lighter. Our main courses focus on Leopold’s signature dishes and we cannot resist the charms of the restaurants bestselling Harissa Chicken, a juicy 90

piece of poultry, nicely charred on the outside and spiced beautifully. With the harissa used sparingly to add a little heat and precariously piled on top of a mountain of nutty cumin cous cous. Adorned with bejewelled pomegranate seeds it’s a dish perfectly reflective of our Middle Eastern location. The same can be said for the Sumac-rubbed Salmon fillet, which brings an abundance of flavour to the delicate fish. For those in search of comfort food Leopold’s makes a good stab at the traditional British fish and chips, utilising a light and crispy batter that retains the flavour and texture of the fish alongside chunky chip shop-style chips. A gourmet hint can be found in the mushroom and truffle pizza, presenting a thin and crispy base topped with portobello mushrooms, parmesan cheese and truffle puree. Leopold’s has become synonymous with gigantic meringues, slabs of cake and a colourful array of macaroons and we couldn’t leave without ordering dessert. Being big fans of fondant, we opt for the red velvet variety, an item that was a monthly special in August 2015 and became so popular it has been added to the full menu. Plated amidst ice cream, a splash of fresh red berries, chocolate cream and a beautiful raspberry crumb (almost sherbet like in texture). The oozing fondant offers a rich chocolate flavour and is a dish not to be missed, especially if paired with syphon coffee, chemex or a cup of freshly brewed tea with mystifying names like dragon pearls and imperial roses. Offering versatility, Leopold’s acts as a good choice for breakfast, a quick lunchtime snack or a full dinner. Portions are generous, the produce is fresh (with the pastries and breads all baked in-house) and the pricing very reasonable. Definitely one for the tea and coffee lovers. ✤

hang Palace, the signature restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi has revamped its menu with a new focus on the diversity in Chinese cuisine and cooking styles. Previously known for serving authentic Cantonese dishes, the award-winning Chinese restaurant now offers an exciting culinary experience by taking its guests through four major regions of China. Inspired by the Huaiyang, Cantonese, Sichuan and Lu cuisines, the new menu at Shang Palace takes its guests on gastronomic journey through the mainland of China. The dishes are not restricted to regions alone; they also follow themes represented by Beijing Opera masks. This brings elements of human emotions and ancient traditions to the plate and the palate. From delicate Cantonese cooking to fiery Sichuan delights and sharing-style dishes, Shang Palace guarantees the most authentic dining experience. First on its new menu is “Abundance”, a red mask indicating devotion, courage and bravery, which are all reflected in a selection of signature dishes and appetisers. This includes the popular roasted Beijing duck with pancakes and condiments as well as the wok-fried foie gras and deep-fried soft shell crab. “Generosity”, a purple mask, follows, resembling the sophistication of Chinese recipes as seen in soups and Dimsum varieties. This section also features a wide variety of claypot dishes, a Chinese specialty. “Inspiration”, which appears in yellow, represents fierceness and cool-headedness. This balance is evident in the choice of mains which included meat, poultry, seafood, vegetable and tofu options with noodles and rice dishes for sides. Finally, there is “Happiness” in black and gold which aptly stands for the dessert section. 92

W
hile we never need an excuse for a spa treatment, it’s super important to choose somewhere that the surroundings are beautiful and the therapists know what they’re doing. Case in point - Zen the Spa at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi. The spa’s concept derives from Holistic Asian Philosophies with an added contemporary twist and the aim of the spa team is to provide each guest with the opportunity to rebalance and rejuvenate - allowing you to be transported away from your busy life to a retreat of tranquillity and calm. The space is tucked away underneath the hotel and is a quiet haven away from the stresses of busy life. The spa consists of 10 treatment rooms, two tranquillity suites and a lovely relaxation area. The varied selection of treatments available includes relaxation, body, facial, hand, foot and massages. We’re booked in for a one-hour Aromatherapy Massage (one of the spa’s most popular treatments) which aims to relax your body and mind. We are ushered to the Couples Spa treatment room which is large and decadent. We start the treatment with a warm bath filled with rose petals and lots of bubbles. In our opinion, this is the perfect way to start a massage as it soothes your muscles and sets the tone for a relaxing experience. We then dry off and lay on the comfy massage tables. We’ve chosen the Jasmine body oil from Aromatherapy Associates which is going to lull our tired muscles and help us to de-stress. Our therapist starts with soothing strokes to our back which is very knotted and then she really starts to get into the sore areas with her forearm and elbow and using stretching techniques particularly around our arms to loosen the pain in between our shoulder blades. She then massages the rest of the body and we fall into a soft slumber. The massage is perfect as it can basically be designed to suit your own preferences and ailments and we feel totally refreshed and relaxed afterwards. It’s then time for our 30-minute Express Facial which is a great add on to the massage to revive and brighten your complexion. The facial also uses products form Aromatherapy Associates and the chosen products for our skin are from the Hydrating range. Our face and chest are cleansed and then exfoliated to remove make-up and impurities. It’s then toned and a light massage is performed on our face, followed by a super hydrating mask and a scalp and neck massage. Once the mask is removed, our skin feels plump and smooth. Two serums are applied along with a day cream and eye cream and to finish this wonderful treatment we sip on a freshly made ginger tea. This spa offers so much and the service is excellent. We leave feeling like totally new people and will definitely be back. ✤
