Let Yourself Rest

I

Self care means giving yourself permission to pause." - Cecilia Tran

t seems rather pointless writing about stress and self-care, wellness and looking after yourself in 2019. Haven’t we already been there, done that? Surely, every single person reading this has had a wake-up call where you realise that taking time out for yourself isn’t something to feel guilty about – after all, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so recharging your batteries in whatever way you see fit is definitely a priority. It’s a surprise how many of us need to be reminded of this, and how often too. Without sounding like we’re preaching (let’s say it louder for the people in the back though), taking care of yourself is not something to be considered as a luxury, rather it’s a necessity. FACT is bringing that all-important reminder this month with a special feature that looks at the idea of burning out through the lens of my new favourite term of the moment – JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). Turn to p25 and join the discussion. Maybe it’s exactly what you need right now – maybe you don’t agree with what we have to say – or, maybe, all you needed was a friendly reminder that saying no to plans, staying off social media for an evening or booking yourself in for a spa day, are all things you shouldn’t feel guilty about doing – especially if they benefit your emotional and mental wellbeing. We stay on the track of tackling stress on p30 at The Smash Room – one of Dubai’s most innovative yet simple and effective leisure concepts that help visitors release and tackle their frustrations through smashing appliances, bottles and other objects – all within a safe environment. And once you’ve smashed things up, check out our round up of some of the city’s best spa venues, starting p34. See what takes your fancy, pick a treatment and get yourself booked in. No excuses! For those looking to escape the Dubai bustle as a way of achieving their balance in mind, body and soul, our wellness trip just an hour away to Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara (p43) is just the calling you’ve been waiting for. Imagine, otherworldly surroundings that promote positivity and peace from the moment you step off the plane. This is the place to get your detox fix in the most healthy way. With direct flights to Salalah running from June onwards, now would be the ideal time to look into booking a visit at this stunning resort. You’ll find all our regular monthly recommendations from food to fashion, tech and travel, plus all the best local hotspots and happenings to keep you all occupied throughout April. Of course, if you haven’t been living under a rock the past eight years, you’ll know that there is only ONE thing the rest of the world is waiting for this month: April 14, Season 8, Game of Thrones. Need I say more? Until next month, up your self-care game and smash that stress away! ☺

BURNED OUT:

IS THIS THE YEAR OF JOMO? What brings you inner peace? Are you REALLY happy? These seem to be the questions of the moment. In 2019, we’re being encouraged to declutter and get back to basics, but is this even possible for a generation that is driven by motivational speakers, busy calendars and 24/7 digital connections? FACT’s Shabana Adam digs deeper…

J

oy. A small three-letter word. It’s been weighing heavy on my mind for a while now. It also seems to be creeping into every conversation these days. Fact: it’s becoming harder to avoid the current angst surrounding the “do what makes you happy” wave of inspirational memes and quotes that fill up our social feeds every day. The buzzword of the moment, “joy” has a direct link to the one pursuit we’re all secretly – or not so secretly – going on: “how I can fix my life?” – followed by a trail of thoughts that involve decluttering socially, professionally, emotionally and existentially. In other words, remove those things that don’t spark joy in your life and you’re good to go. Sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong. And I don’t think you’ll be surprised to ready why. In his book, The Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) – philosopher and psychologist Svend Brinkmann, who coined the term JOMO in response to the popular hashtag #FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), talks about the forceful pressures of living in modern day society. The idea that you always need to be doing more: going out more, being invited to more events, getting involved in more activities, acquiring more possessions, and overall just being more. In a world of TED Talks and life coaches, social media influencers and creative advertising, these growing burdens have become an extension of our own minds. “We are constantly invited to do something, think something, experience something, buy something… it is sometimes difficult to distinguish what is important from what is not,” Brinkmann writes. In the Gulf, especially, life clutter builds up when we fill our calendars with social events that we don’t really want to go, too many sale items that take up unnecessary space in our closets, toxic relationships with negative thoughts and feelings, or work tasks that we say yes to when they’re not actually our responsibility (you know where I’m going with this). You see, the idea of decluttering to feel joy could indeed lead us to freedom and contentment – at least, this is what Brinkmann is proposing. But all of this comes from being able to say another very important word – no. YOU CAN DO IT: SAYING NO After reading his book, I felt a sense of validation for something that doesn’t actually require society’s permission: the ability to say “no”. No, I don’t want to go for dinner with you on Friday night, I’d rather sink into my rarely-used couch and read a book. No, that party sounds too rowdy for me, let’s see each other another day for a more intimate coffee or lunch, and, for the sake of my tired eyes and sanity: no, I can’t make it to your last-minute event even if there’s free food and a gift bag because, honestly, I just don’t care enough to dress to impress on a Tuesday night after a 12-hour work day. Sound familiar? Brinkmann’s book has taught me something that a lot of us have forgotten, or pushed to the side because it might be considered “rude” or “too honest” – that is, if you don’t want to do it, JUST SAY NO. It seems like the most logical response to any feelings of being overwhelmed, overworked, and overstressed. Saying no means you’re actually putting yourself first. Giving yourself time to take a break from all the disorder of the world that is made up of insta-stories or online shopping, or simply, too many uninteresting, meaningless conversations. Surely, it sounds like a mantra that should be ingrained into human nature, so why is the idea of JOMO and in particular the act of saying “no” such a difficult concept to grasp? You might struggle to say no in various situations for a number of reasons – the underlying fear that people will think you’re lazy or not trying hard enough, that saying “no” will make you unlikeable so, instead, we form a compulsive pattern of “yes” to erase self-doubt and to keep those around us happy. Subconsciously, this is the lifestyle many of us live here in the Gulf and, in my opinion, saying “no” is one of the realest forms of holding onto the genuine in a society that’s filled with privileges, convenience and, sometimes, tunnel vision, where it’s easy to lose yourself. 26

TAKE NOTE: SELF CARE How much longer can we really continue to live at the pace we’re living at? Feelings of living detached, unsustainable lives have become prevalent in the region. A number of scattered data reveals that anxiety and depression is rife in this part of the world, according to a 2018 article on Al-Fanar Media: “A 2009 study screened 1,552 adolescents in Saudi Arabia and found the most common mental-health problem was anxiety. A 2005 study concluded that 16 percent of Lebanese adolescents had suicidal thoughts.” According to other global studies, the Middle Eastern region suffers from the highest rates of depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and suicide. It’s challenging to find any accurate and reliable data that monitors

growth, decline, overall progression, patterns and possible triggers about mental health in the region, but many issues have been talked about before: stigmatisation, lack of physical activity, work pressures, environmental factors, biological causes – all of which are mirrored in most parts of the world amongst youth and young professionals. Therefore, it’s so important, now more than ever, to take care of your inner and outer wellbeing - with equal attention. “Overwhelmed is pretty much my middle name,” says Amal Absiye, a full-time English teacher living and working in Abu Dhabi. “I often feel as though I'm swimming both at work and home. My job requires a lot of my time. My days are often long and exhausting ones. As a teacher, I'm sure many can relate when I say that I often feel as though I'm losing ground every day and I'm forever trying to make it up the next day. It’s a never-ending cycle,” she continues. “I don't have the kind of job where I clock in and clock out each day. My work follows me home and so much of my intended me-time turns into having to invest extra time into my work.” So, how does she cope with creating a work-life balance? “Ever since I started eating well and going to the gym, I feel as though this has really helped me cope with stress,” Amal shares. “That one hour to 90 minutes I put in, allows me to truly focus on me and almost kind of escape. mental), my mood, and my overall productivity at work.” For Amal, she’s found her “thing” – a hobby, an activity, that one part of her routine that’s purely dedicated to herself. No strings attached, just simple metime. And this is something she has come to understand as a result of many years of juggling life’s clutter. “I feel as though I've found that work-life balance that I've craved for so long,” she says. “Having felt burnt out for so long, I've found that happy medium between work life and personal life. Work never ends, and I've learned that what doesn't get finished today can be completed tomorrow,” she smiles. “This has proven beneficial for not just my physical health, but my mental health too.” DEVIL IN DISGUISE: SOCIAL MEDIA Need a virtual talking to, what about some motivation for the gym, or how about your daily dose of lols with memes – there’s an app for it all. A while back, we had a dig at trying to unravel the challenges of a digital detox: what are the signs for when we need a break from the digital world? Whether we like it or not, we are creatures of social media; the Arab Social Media Report 2017 found that 90 per cent of the online population in most Middle East countries use social networking sites, daily. 28

PEP TALK •

This might be for personal use to stay in touch with family and friends or for business purposes to build a brand’s reputation, either way it’s clear that we have been well and truly infected with the social media bug. And there’s no rush for a cure anytime soon. But what happens when all the noise gets a bit too much? Sometimes, there’s nothing more soothing than reading a motivational post just when you need it. Other times, there’s nothing more therapeutic than unfollowing that person who adds nothing of value to your timeline. Dare I say it – social media has become the number one reason for unwanted clutter in many of our lives. Whether it’s for positive reasons like following your favourite entrepreneur or getting tips from a bona fide mommy blogger, or if you’re stalking your high school lab partner’s other half, whatever the reason may be – a life before hashtags and IGTV and subscribe buttons seems like a million years ago. The key, like most of the things that could lead to joy, is balance. Juan Jimenez, a Data Analyst living in Abu Dhabi, says: I believe social media is shaping many aspects of our lives; self-care and stress management are perhaps among the main topics. In regard to self-care, I follow people that share tips about gym routines, skin care, healthy eating and fashion,” he continues. “Some of their tips are helpful and easy to add to my daily routine. In terms of stress, yoga and optimising your time when you have a super busy agenda, these are all topics that are usually promoted by “self-made” business people or famous celebrities. Even though this may be a source of motivation, I do believe stress management should be based on realistic lifestyles,” he admits.” Social media is a portal that allows people to portray the life they want the world to see but not the life they actually live. So, I try my best to keep it real," Juan adds.

stay in, adopt JOMO like it’s your new best friend, self-care like you’ve never done before – spa, gym, therapy, alternative medicine – find YOUR thing, and, most of all, disconnect and recharge those batteries as often as you need to. For me, admittedly, I do find my joy in JOMO. Or at least being in control of when to say yes and when to say no. But, mostly, I find joy in the places I’m not looking for it: spontaneous hugs from my friend’s beautiful children, laughter in coffeeshops with loved ones that I don’t get to see as much as I’d like to, a surprise text from family members announcing a wedding or a birth, or when a really interesting podcast episode helps to get me through an hour’s workout every day. Henri J.M Nouwen says: “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” Seems like something fleeting, you feel it and then it disappears, you aspire it like a solid state of mind but, joy, much like the hashtagged acronym it inspired, is either momentary or an entirely self-made way of life. To that I say: raise the bar, put joy on a pedestal, be honest and real about what brings you joy and, for the sake of your emotional, physical and mental wellbeing, please feel free to say NO. ✤

BURNOUT: WHAT TO DO Y3NY? If you feel yourself going from bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to seriously burnt out, it’s time for a hard look in the mirror. • THE SMASH ROOM

SMASH

THINGS UP! AT A TIME WHEN HOLISTIC THERAPIES ARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF CALMING DOWN, SOMETIMES, YOU JUST NEED TO GEAR UP, HAMMER IN HAND, AND DESTROY THINGS – NO BOUNDARIES, NO JUDGMENT! WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING TO GET A QUICK ADRENALIN RUSH OR TO BLOW OFF SOME STEAM, THE SMASH ROOM IS THE PLACE TO DO IT. FACT CHATS WITH THE CO-FOUNDERS OF THE HOMEGROWN LEISURE CONCEPT; SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR, IBRAHIM ABUDYAK, AND PSYCHOLOGIST, HIBA BALFAQIH TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS SAFE SPACE TO UNLEASH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS…

Hi guys! Let’s jump right in… for someone who has never heard of The Smash Room, sum up the experience in one sentence? Hiba: A massage for your inner stress and pent up emotions! Ibrahim: Your Sanctuary; what happens at The Smash Room stays there! So, how does it work – you come with your friends and smash things up? Hiba: Yup! As simple as that. You grab your pals and a weapon of choice, get into a room and smash your stress away. Do you remember where and when you first thought of the idea for The Smash Room – tell us a little bit about its back story… Hiba: The idea for Smash Room was inspired by a difficult time in my life. My grandma passed away and the traditional, more peaceful mechanisms of coping with grief just weren't cutting it. So I took old junk into the backyard and smashed it to bits, and it made me feel massively better. Right then, came that light bulb moment. This is a freaking good idea! Would you say that a trip to The Smash Room is a good stress reliever? Hiba: Good is an understatement. As Trump would say, it’s HUGEEEEEE! Our customers would agree with Trump too! Ibrahim: I am pretty sure that’s the only thing our customers will agree on with Trump! You recycle all the items that are “smashed” – tell us more about how this process works… Ibrahim: We work with partners to make this happen, simply the process starts by segregating the items, metals from electronics then being collected and sent to recycling on a weekly schedule. Who/which type of clientele is The Smash Room most popular with, or do you get visitors from all walks of life? Hiba: Women. Viva Girl Power! We get a lot of women but from all walks of life. Women are comfortable expressing all their emotions. There’s still this taboo around men “expressing” themselves. We are trying to break that stereotype. No pun intended. 30

• THE SMASH ROOM What has the feedback been like from visitors – any memorable stories you can share with us? Hiba: We had a guy come down three times in one day during his breakup. We actually kept The Smash Room open beyond working hours to accommodate him. The poor guy needed it. Dating in this tinder-era is stressful! Ibrahim: A Japanese tourist walked all the way from Mall of The Emirates to The Smash Room in peak summer to smash some s**t then went all the way back walking; his smile stayed longer than the sweat on his t-shirt. What’s next for The Smash Room – share with us some of the goals for 2019… Hiba: Franchising is part of our growth plans in 2019. We are also coming up with creative ideas for new things to smash. For our first year anniversary, we are releasing the EPIC SMASH where we are giving 10 people the opportunity to smash a car! Ibrahim: Yes, expanding around the world using our franchise system; and keep innovating around the concept. And, of course, a moving smash bus room-in-a-bus anyone? ✤

GO: VISIT WWW.THESMASHROOM.AE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

The Smash Room also gives back to charities such as Melltoo and Emirates Red Crescent. Why was it important to you to have this connection with a worthy cause? Ibrahim: I have wanted to do this since we started, and it took us a couple of months to make it happen. We started this in Ramadan last year and never looked back. It is simply who we are as individuals, a team and as a brand! In your opinion, what has made The Smash Room a success? Hiba: The idea! Dubai needed a new recreational idea - something unique and innovative. The Smash Room fits that gap. Ibrahim: Amen to that, and the execution too; The Smash Room is very unique. You can’t get the same vibe and feel anywhere else in Dubai. Any advice for budding entrepreneurs who want to start up small businesses but might be afraid of the risks? Hiba: Nothing in life comes without risk! In this economy, your job can also be at risk. If you are passionate about an idea, and your heart tells you to do it, just jump in. If you fail, you learn, if you succeed, you grow. WIN-WIN! Ibrahim: Choose carefully who you partner with; Hiba and I are so different yet our skill sets compliment each other hence the perfect match. And yes, the team; they either make it or break it so I would spend more time and effort into team selection and nurturing each one of them. 32

W

hen you hear the words ‘wellness retreat’ what comes to mind? Maybe you think of 6am yoga classes and intense daily workouts, interspersed with wheat grass shots and salads that are green enough to test your human limitations. Whatever your notion is, let it go and let’s start fresh. Forget about intermittent fasting, juicing, calorie counts and perfect flexibility. Instead, concentrate on your inner wellbeing – your mind and body connecting to come clean. This is exactly the soulful journey we embarked on during a visit to the luxury resort of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara. ARE WE STILL IN THE GCC? In a region where many seek the solace of wilderness for the sake of their human spirit and the necessity of their personal peace, Salalah is the kind of place that can help you put a true perspective on life. As a destination, it offers you the kind of landscapes that speak to your soul; silent, rocky wadis, turquoise waves lapping white sandy shores and plenty of mountainside moments – where you might just spot a tribe of goats moving over rugged ground, or a family of cheekylooking camels resting calmly as 4x4 vehicles whizz by. It is the Middle East after all, and Salalah offers raw, unfiltered surroundings without a single skyscraper in sight. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara has every luxury and comfort you could dream of; starting from personalised greetings to a kitchensized mini bar and even a soap menu. They’ve really thought of it all. There’s no compromise on convenience and you’ll quickly start to slow down and appreciate every little detail (we loved the complimentary beach bag, hat and frisbee in the room), something that is so easily lost in the hustle of life in the Gulf. BALANCE WELLNESS PROGRAMME Once we’re well acquainted with the stunning One-Bedroom Garden View Pool Villa, we head for a consultation with our Wellness Guru, Ratheesh, at Anantara Spa. After filling out a questionnaire that specifically asks questions related to your emotional, mental and physical wellbeing, including things like “how quickly do you get angry” and “do you have any particular pain in the body to target” – Ratheesh establishes our individual needs and goals of the three-day Balance Wellness Programme. We’re not weighed and our BMI isn’t checked – two things we were expecting to happen at consultation stage. However, it quickly becomes clear that this programme isn’t designed to be a military-style boot camp of regimented exercise and eating, instead you’re encouraged from the onset to choose light daily activities alongside nutritious dining options that will aid in really restoring your internal pipes, so to speak, to their purest form. All the while, you’ll be aiding your body’s natural way of working with three healthy meals a day, fresh juices to top up and stay hydrated, and, of course, a host of activities and treatments that go hand-in-hand with your selected diet. We were ready! DAY ONE If you’re someone who eats sporadically throughout the day or if you’re not used to eating the recommended daily intake specified for your age, gender, body type and so on, then day one is likely to be a little testing – but far from impossible. Breakfast at Sakalan is like walking into a bona fide food paradise; served in the stylish dining room or 44

on the terrace beside the infinity pool, there’s a full-to-the-brim buffet packed with pastries galore (the vanilla cruffs are well worth biting into), a fruit station, egg counter, cereal and bread for days, healthy smoothies and juices to kick-start your system, and all the indulgent favourites including brick-sized French Toast, Pancakes dripping in maple syrup, savoury classics like Eggs Florentine and even a host of Arabic, Chinese and more worldly options. What we’re saying is – be ready (and behave!). Day one of the programme remains our favourite, all thanks to the resort’s Salalah Guru, Hussain. Without exaggerating, Hussain may just be the best guide you could ask for on an excursion – in this case, a Mountain Hike. He shares with us stories about growing up in a mountain society, how life was as simple as a glass of milk and a piece of bread back then, and, probably the most endearing tale – the Salalah community has set up a WhatsApp group to help each other, and those less fortunate who reside there, with any financial and medical problems. If an issue arises on the group: “you can give even five or ten riyals each and people give something, whatever they can, to help the person,” Hussain says. This, we thought, was exactly the good-natured character we’d experienced of the Omani people and their ways. We drive deep into the wadi on the Dhofar Mountains which resembles something that is easily a cross between the worlds of Mad Max and Jurassic Park. Hussain tells us that in a few months, these empty spaces will be filled with water. We navigate a labyrinth of rocks; white, brown, craggy earth, working up a respectable sweat (for people who haven’t hiked in a LONG time) and admiring the sparse vegetation and wildlife when it appears. It’s windy when we visit, and the breeze helps to keep us going at a steady pace – however, we’d highly recommend wearing a hat and sunscreen. Hussain then drives us to one of his “secret” spots – a place that could easily bring a tear to the eye. Over the edge of a cliff, serene blue water glides onto white sand like something you would only expect to be conjured up on Photoshop – we were lost for words – even more so when Hussain takes just minutes to trek down to the beach and etch “Anantara” in the sand, all for the sake of our insta-stories – LEGEND. programme – Avocado Tartare (starter), Red Lentils and Tomato Casserole (main) and Carrot Cake with Dark Chocolate Frosting and Goji (dessert). The three-day package includes a three-course lunch and dinner, which you get to personally choose from the Wellness Cuisine menu. All meals and wellness drinks are brought straight to your room or villa, making it pretty smooth to stick with the agenda of the day. We expected the food to be quite basic and small-sized portions, but we were pleasantly surprised. Central to the success of the wellness programme, the specially-designed cuisine is the brainchild of expert vegan-vegetarian chef Valeria Agnelutto. This healthy, cleansing cuisine is designed to maintain your energy and levels during the entire programme while providing you with all the elements that your body needs to detox. We felt it almost immediately. Firstly, every course is oozing flavour – something that is often difficult to attain with vegan and vegetarian ingredients – but is achieved here, so perfectly. The portions are a good size – not excessive but definitely filling. And we notice that our bodies are digesting the food we’re eating with much more vigour and imminence. Before dinner, we head to the spa for a luxurious hammam treatment. Drawing on centuries of Arabian wellness – the ancient ritual starts with a muscle-relaxing steam bath in preparation for a black soap cleansing and kessa mitt exfoliation to sweep impurities. Once steamed 46

and scrubbed, a Moroccan Rhassoul treatment richly nourishes and rehydrates, leaving the skin silky soft. It’s the complete opposite of our morning hike; just what our bodies needed. The robust scrubbing seems to have washed away any internal negative thoughts as well as the actual dead skin too. By the time dinner arrives, we’re in our robes, ready to eat up and get a good night’s sleep. One thing this wellness programme has triggered is our body clock – it’s getting back in tune with daylight and darkness, which means that we fall into a deep slumber with bellies full, prepared for more nourishment the next day. DAY TWO Day two takes a more chilled-out turn. After breakfast and the first wellness drink of the day, we head straight for the beach where the next few hours is spent shifting between a fair amount of beach walks and topping up the tan. This is one thing we really appreciated about the programme – it allows enough spare time for us to relax and do our own thing. Of course, we headed back into our impressive villa for both lunch and dinner, where the chickpea burger with rosemary and parsley with veggie mayo and the carrot and cashews smooth soup are both highlights. Ingredients are rich and the taste is what we’d easily call Michelin-standard. In between the two meals we opted for our second wellness therapy: the 60-minute Abhyanga Massage, which is designed to restore balance. The ancient healing massage uses herbinfused oils that are gently warmed and lightly massaged into the skin using soothing friction strokes. As the oils penetrate the skin, toxins and impurities are loosened, reducing muscle tension and calming the nervous system. The massage is a great choice for those looking to harmonise their mind and body. The therapists, including wellness guru Ratheesh, are both professional and thorough – we leave the room in a complete state of zen. DAY THREE By the time we arrive at day three, there’s a pep in our step that wasn’t there when we’d arrived to the resort. Although activity has been light, we’re full of energy and the nutritious food we’ve been eating really

seems to have done the trick with balancing out our inner workings. We’re sleeping better, our skin is glowing and overall we feel fresher – no sluggish periods in the middle of the afternoon and no lethargic moments of zoning out for impromptu naps. In fact, we start our day with a 9am yoga class in the spa garden and even manage to make it to the gym a little later on for a cardio hit. The food continues to impress with standouts being the special miso soup and the vegetables fettucine with spinach pesto and cherry tomatoes. The menu is serious foodie goals – even for die-hard carnivores, it’s a big change – but one that’s really worth it. PERSONAL WELLNESS GOALS Ask us again what we think of when the words ‘wellness retreat’ crop up, and we’ll answer: the active process of making better choices towards a healthier mind, body and soul – both inside and out. If there’s one thing you’ll find at the end of your Balance Wellness Programme at the serene Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, it’s that this could very well be the beginning of a constant, conscious pursuit of truly living your best life. ✤

coast of Antrim. However a highlight of the location would have to be The Dark Hedges, fringing the famous Kingsroad itself, which has been used as passage for many a Stark in the series. Prior to exploring, guests can indulge in a Games of Thrones® themed tea fit for a Karl and Khaleesi, and can come back to yet another themed banquet to feast upon after a thrilling day of sightseeing. TOP TIP - Go at dusk for the optimal “WOW!” photograph. Winterfell at Castle Ward, Down Can you really visit Northern Ireland and not visit the legendary home of the mighty Starks, Winterfell, … Erm? No! The majestic location exudes a sense of the pride of the North, as much of the surrounding scenery is seen over a number of episodes – including when Arya hones her archery skills, or when Catelyn Stark oversees the ‘going ons’ of her family. Visitors to Castle Ward can don authentic Westerosean apparel (trust me you look and feel awesome), tuck into themed banquets and even meet two of the fearsome direwolves. The secret shadow in the Stormlands The Cushendun Caves are over 400 million years old. Found along the Antrim coastline, near the cosy village of Cushendun, they look out over the stony beach and the turbulent sea. In Westeros, these caves are the site of a dark crime. This is where Melisandre summons her shadowy demon beneath Renly's Camp, in order to murder Stannis' brother in the name of the Lord of Light.

Featuring swirling yet delicate guitar tones, the heartwarming track has us deep in our feelings. Amidst the Chaos By Sara Bareilles

Following a long wait, Sara Bareilles is back with a bang with her upcoming sixth studio album. Her first imminent album in six years, the new music has a rootsy sound and touches on everything from love to politics. Blessing us with some really beautiful music with the hit musical Waitress, a full-fledged album was much awaited from the singer. Celebrating female strength, the groovy, jazz-infused Armor offers a fitting message about sisterhood and defiance. The femalecentric anthem celebrates women and girls of different colors, orientations, ages and sizes, while also showcasing Bareilles’s musical prowess. Speaking about the therapeutic quality of art right now, the song couldn’t have come out at a better time. Another testament of the songstress’ mesmerising vocals, Fire talks about the acceptance of an ending relationship that wasn’t thrilling to begin with. Backed by acoustic guitar and a quivering beat, the single spotlights the strength of Bareilles’s delectable voice. She has definitely grown as an artist and as a songwriter.

When two 18-year-old girls go missing on their gap year in Thailand, their family is desperate, frantic with worry and thrust into the spotlight. Journalist Kate Waters always does everything she can to be first to the story, first with the exclusive, first to discover the truth. This time it’s personal as she can’t stop thinking about her own son who she hasn’t seen in two years since he left home to go traveling. As the case of the missing girls unfolds, they all realise danger is sometimes closer than you expect.

BEACHFRONT BLISS IF IT’S A GLORIOUS SANDY BEACH, A STUNNING POOL AREA AND A HOME AWAY FROM HOME THAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR DURING A STAYCATION IN ABU DHABI, THERE’S ONE 5-STAR PROPERTY THAT OFFERS YOU ALL THE NEEDED COMFORTS AND TOP-NOTCH SERVICE OF A HOTEL! W

e’ve visited hotels up and down Abu Dhabi’s glittering Corniche and we’ve even stayed ay Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana previously, but little did we expect this hospitality gem to have upped its game so much since the last time we checked in. The 5-star property is located on the tip of the Corniche, opposite Emirates Palace and right next door to the Presidential Palace (both great for sightseeing) – and hugged by a lovely beach and turquoise water on the other side. You know what that means – beautiful views for miles no matter which direction you’re facing. That’s a pretty unique position to be in! Be prepared for the most friendly welcome as the staff, from the bellboy to the front office, the lobby lounge waiters and housekeeping, all cast a lasting first impression within just a few hours of checking in. We experienced warm smiles and a real can-do approach, something that could have been easily lost considering that the hotel was having a busy week with guests visiting on holiday, for business and to dine at the restaurants. We’re greeted with a cup of Gahwa – traditional Arabic coffee, and dates. Check in is smooth and we’re already feeling comfortable with having a little wander around the hotel We’re off to a great start!

ROOM GOALS

The hotel boasts 443 rooms and suites, many overlooking the Arabian Sea and the picturesque grounds. There’s an option for every type of traveller; couples, solo, business and culture trips, but it’s especially great for families. We stayed in a Premium Room Plus – a HUGE space that is ideal for up to three people or families with small children who want optimum luxury and facilities for their staycay. It’s the size and the sea view that we’re in awe of – there’s a big bathroom with a bathtub and walk-in shower, there’s a lovely open plan dining and sitting area, and lo’ and behold, there’s a well-equipped kitchenette with plenty of storage space, a washing machine, fridge, hob, and all the cutlery and utensils you need to whip up an evening meal (for those days where all you want to do is come back from the pool, cook something yummy and relax). We love that the room is designed to give guests the experience of being in a house but also manages to separate where you eat, lounge, work, and sleep in a practical way. To top that off, imagine waking up to breathtaking, far-reaching views of turquoise waters – that’s exactly what you’ll get from this amazing room. We were overlooking the pool onto the back of Al Bateen, it really is a glorious sight to marvel whilst sipping your morning coffee on the balcony. For us, nothing beats a good night’s sleep during a staycay – you want to relax but also keep fresh-faced. No need to worry here because the bed is one of the 58

comfiest, we’ve ever slept on. We also loved that housekeeping were generous with water top up and room service was fast and efficient – all adding to the convenience of a great staycation in the capital.

FOODIE FAVES

When you’re having a long weekend stay, dining options are key to choosing where to spend your days. Luckily, for guests at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan, there’s nothing but variety. Breakfast at Horizon is a lavish affair of abundant variety and plenty of filling and lighter options to start your day off. Switch it up for lunch and order yourself a charming afternoon tea at The Lounge. Three-tiers packed with sweet and savoury delights; the scones are incredible and the tuna sandwich is delish (it’s the simple things that matter!). You might be surprised to learn that Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan By Rotana is the only “dry” 5-star hotel in Abu Dhabi, in that it doesn’t serve alcohol. While this might deter some guests, we found it to be one of the best and most unique appeals of the hotel. It means that you’re not going to get rowdy guests or unwanted smells in certain areas – bonus! In the evening, Kamoon is the place to be. It’s an award-winning, authentic Arabic restaurant that serves up some of the best wholesome and hearty Arabic dishes alongside some of the best shisha we’ve tried. Some of the highlights of our meal included the lip-licking muhammara – just divine – then there

was the batata hara, a simple dish that was cooked with the most amazing flavours and texture. We’d highly recommend getting the Turkish Kebab for two – a platter longer than our arms adorns the table, with juicy kebab and lamb chops to feast on. For dessert, try the Mango Muhallabia – it’s beautifully silky and packed with a lovely mango taste. The staff are friendly and attentive, and happy to answer all of our questions – again, we feel right at home. For the cooler season, the terrace here is THE place to be with your loved ones for a guaranteed great dining experience.

RECREATION HEAVEN

Now, facilities is one of the main reasons why this hotel is just ideal for every member of the family. The 200-metre pristine beach, the massive outdoor pool (there’s a kids pool, crèche and playground too), the tennis and squash courts, excellent gym and fitness centre, exciting watersports activities and, most of all, the Wellness and Massage services at the spa, all of these provide guests with enough options for a laid back but occupied getaway. We tried the absolutely incredible Thai Herbal Compress, a 90-minute massage that couldn’t have been more perfect if it tried. The therapist shows leads the way to a very serene treatment room where the bed is one of the coziest we’ve ever laid on in a spa. Using a combination of oil and hot poultices with herbal inside, the massage is designed for pain relief from aching muscles, especially good for people who work out, and to relax and soothe tired souls. I drift off into a sweet slumber and just don’t want it to end! Finishing off with a cup of hot ginger tea, the experience is just as impressive, if not better than some of the more lavish hotel spas we’ve encountered. This treatment is seriously everything that the doctor ordered! Not only was the entire experience professional and beyond relaxing, the effects of the massage lasted for days afterwards. Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana offers hospitality with an Arabian touch. It celebrates local culture whilst retaining the high standards of the Rotana brand. It’s in just the right location for a complete escape, especially now that Qasr Al Watan is open for tours – it’s close to enoughmalls and other attractions if you do fancy getting out to explore. With so many key features ticked, what more could you ask for? Warning: it will be difficult to check out and return back to reality! ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh

SELFCARE BEYOND FACE MASKS There are zillions of products and brands across beauty, skincare and wellness out on shelves or on our Instagram feed to help us achieve a zen state of mind, but let’s be honest - there is much more to self-care than face masks and motivational quotes to get us through our days. While I do very much enjoy an occasional trip to the spa and am not above treating myself to a nice, calming face mask at home – my self-care mission is more about bringing myself back to a state of balance and being in-sync. With the #selfcare hashtag trending across various social media platforms, I would like to highlight that care of ourselves is not a trend. It’s an act of social responsibility. With our busy agendas – shoutout to the working mamas, stay at home mamas, savvy women entrepreneurs and ladies who punch in from nint o five, we are all busy with different priorities so it’s vital to divide our limited time and attention to things that matter to us because we deserve it. Cancelling plans when not feeling okay IS okay and learning how to say no when you do not want to do something can raise some eyebrows but do not call it being selfish. Everything else can wait and be rescheduled if it is taking a toll on your own wellness. Sometimes we get caught up with taking care of others that we tend to forget to take care of ourselves. Know that self-care is an everyday practice for living your best life and the goal is to build a life that we don’t feel the need to escape from and to live in a way that supports the strongest, most aware version of ourselves.

Yours fashionably, Amal

LEGENDARY DINING For a venue that is so new, Dahab Restaurant & Lounge has been causing quite the stir on the city’s dining scene; with its very eclectic and warm interiors, excelled only by the beautiful outdoor seating, the venue at Hilton Capital Grand Hotel, Abu Dhabi epitomises everything you’d expect from a bona fide Lebanese culinary experience, as FACT finds out… fact magazine

W

e’ve been to our fair share of Lebanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi and none has quite wowed us the way that Dahab Restaurant & Lounge has. Bridging the gap between authentic and contemporary, every dedicated dining area brings to life the culture, traditions and hospitality of Lebanon. The main dining room can only be described as a classy hall of fame dedicated to the best musicians and singing talents from Lebanon and the Gulf. Famous names including Nancy Ajram, Ragheb Alama, Myriam Fares and Wael Kfoury all adorn the walls of the restaurant whilst regal, velvet-coated chairs line the long tables that are frequently packed with diners and party-goers who have fallen hard for the excellent food and entertainment that Dahab has fast-become known for: something that is evident when we spot the decked-out stage area which hosts weekly events with well-known singers – a dinner and party done the Lebanese way! There’s a very stylish bar-cum-lounge area just off the main dining room and the outdoor terrace is every shisha-lover’s dream. If you don’t eat Lebanese food often then a visit to Dahab will be just the fix you’re searching for. Ingredients are rich and you can taste the quality in every dish. We begin with a generous helping of crispy bread and three different dips, of which the olive paste keeps us occupied until our starters arrive. We dig into creamy Hummus with soft, warm bread, followed by a deliciously smoky Moutabel which consists of the most perfect roasted eggplant that’s popping off with flavour from the seasame tahini, yogurt, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil. The Fattoush is super fresh whilst the Baba Ghannouj doesn’t disappoint. However, if you want to talk about the dish that really had us in awe; the humble Yalanji Warak Enab was a pleasant surprise. The traditional rolled vine leaves stuffed with mixed vegetables and rice was elevated with the tangy touch of pomegranate sauce – an ingredient that remains a staple of Lebanese cooking, and tastes incredible. The hot mezze follows suit with crispy Batata Harra coated in chilli, garlic, coriander and lemon juice – SO good. The Kebbeh Hamis has us fighting for the last piece, stuffed with lamb meat and pine nuts; it makes for the ideal snack to opt for as an appetiser. It’s the Sawdet Dajaj – pan fried chicken liver with mushroom, onion, sweet chilli and pomegranate molasses that blows our taste buds away. The flavours are reminiscent of just the way we used to eat chicken liver with the family in our childhood – a lovely nostalgic dish.

Mains roll out with the grandeur that can be expected at any good Lebanese restaurant. Of course, we’re presented with a juicy platter of various kebab straight off the charcoal grill. The minced lamb concoction is a standout – plump and mouthwatering, you can taste how good the quality of the meat is with every bite. Don’t forget to dip your French fries in the roasted garlic mayo for even more lip-licking satisfaction. Dahab’s menu is as diverse as the venue. There’s everything from grills to seafood, raw meat, soups, salads, pizza and all the mezzeh you could ask for at a Lebanese restaurant. Dessert is also a treat with everything from your classic Umm Ali and Kunafa to more palate-exciting options like Crispy Banana Tarlet and Ayesh Elsaraya, caramelised toasted bread, ishta and pistachio. Let’s just say that every foodie will be catered to. Presentation of the dishes is impeccable – and portion sizes are very generous which makes ordering fun for those who want to share and try a little bit of everything. The staff make you feel at home, being attentive without being intrusive – service is fast and efficient, yet you’re always given your privacy. We would highly recommend visiting one of Dahab’s many promotional dining offers for a real introduction to the vibrant venue and its superior food. ✤

STILL WINNING There are few venues in Abu Dhabi to have really stood the test of time, so when we visit an old favourite to find that it’s just as busy with patrons on weekday as it used to be years ago, and that the food has been amped up to match the quality atmosphere, it’s definitely worth talking about. And where might this unique place be? It’s none other than the iconic Stills Bar & Restaurant at the Crowne Plaza Yas Island… fact magazine

alking into Stills on a Monday evening is like walking into an old neighbour’s place for a weekend barbeque. You’re greeted by familiar surroundings, you immediately feel nostalgic about the great memories you have of being there, and you fall right back into the cool crowd, because this place feels like home. It’s true for many expats who discovered Stills and made it their regular spot upon first arriving in Abu Dhabi – before the plethora of big independent brands and 5-star hotels started popping up on and around Yas Island – Stills was the place to be. In fact, from the steady swathe of guests we see during our visit, it seems that not much has changed in the way of the after-work crowds who flock to this very easy-breezy hangout. There’s an air of cool and casual meets sophisticated at Stills. We would say that it blends together the best of laid-back pub vibes with the chic nature of an intimate bar-cum-lounge. There’s plenty of variation from the long bar where thirst-quenching liquid concoctions are served to the fairy-lightadorned outdoor terrace and the very beautifully-lit restaurant area with it’s comfy tables. We see groups of colleagues enjoying drinks, releasing their daily stresses, and we see couples stopping in for a bite to eat, friends catching up over their favourite sips whilst catching the lovely breeze outside and there’s an overall lively and welcoming ambiance. It doesn’t take long for us to choose a tasty passion fruit-infused mocktail that’s popping with flavour, followed by a plethora of food. The menu is packed with hearty dishes, everything you’d expect to find in a venue of this calibre, yet there are a few surprises which we’re looking forward to sinking our teeth into. We begin with one of the restaurant’s signature dishes – the Stills Flatbread – except this is no ordinary flatbread. Topped with pan-seared prawns, caramelised red onions, cherry tomatoes, feta, goat cheese, pesto, roquette, and balsamic glaze – the combination of flavours draws the most genuine “mmmhs” that we’ve expressed in a long while. For lovers of savoury appetisers, this dish has it all – the tangy feta, the tart earthy goat cheese, the natural sweetness of the tender onions and, of course, the plump prawns which are sized just perfectly and added with generosity (everyone at the table gets their fair share!). A great start to set the scene for what’s to come. Next, a dish that gets our heart racing – literally. If you’re a carnivorous diner, we’d highly recommend the Wagyu Pie with Puff Crust. Another signature main, it’s a rich and satisfying choice for anyone who wants to get their fill of quality meat. Packed with 12-hour slow braised Wagyu brisket, rich Guinness

gravy, onions, mushrooms, and presented with a side of green onion mash, veal bacon, savoy cabbage and Guinness taster – it’s the epitome of home cooking from the heart. The meat is beautifully tender and contrasts like a match made in heaven with the crusty puff pastry. It reminds us of cold winter days at home in the UK, where nothing would beat a home-made pie filled with hearty ingredients. If you’ve still got space for more, try one of the succulent grills, served with roquette, roasted vine tomatoes and grilled portobello mushroom. We opted for the 220g Prime CAB Tenderloin – a superior quality beef that is incredibly flavourful and juicy due to its generous marbling. It’s cooked just as we request – medium/well – and the sides of mash potato and vegetables are also a delightful accompaniment. With a dash of rosemary sauce, and you’re good to go – another near-perfect dish. Just when we thought things couldn’t get better, a plate of the iconic Sticky Toffee Pudding makes its way to the table. Gorgeous presentation and it tastes exactly how we like it, with the dates lending moistness and sweet depth but not overpowering the dessert. The ice cream and toffee sauce add an extra delicious dimension and we scoop up every last bit. Stills has managed to do something that many dining venues in Abu Dhabi struggle with – it has retained a sense of character without giving into gimmick and trends, and managed to stay relevant, innovative and true to its roots. More of the same please and we’ll be happy! ✤

hen arriving at Market Kitchen, a warmth and homeliness is evident. Market Kitchen is designed to give diners a sense of feeling at their comfiest and it works beautifully. The wooden flooring, warm lighting, bench-top counters and trinkets dotted around, plus a gorgeous olive tree in the middle of the room, combine to create a modern bistro feel. The venue is now led by Restaurant Manager Ismael Sielinou and Colombian Head Chef Jhon Faver Martinez who brings along his culinary expertise to create the new menu. Chef Jhon has been cooking in the hospitality industry since 2001 and his culinary knowledge comes from studying in France and Colombia. He won a culinary contest in Colombia which changed his life and allowed him to pursue an international culinary career. His experience includes working in global 5-star kitchens in Barcelona, Sao Paulo and Bogota with Michelin Star Chefs such as Albert Adria & Jean Georges. He's brought a new twist to the menu while still keeping all the favourite and popular dishes that the restaurant is known for. There are loads of tasty options available and this restaurant will have you coming back for more due to their focus on simple but flavoursome and fresh food. From the starters, one of the classics is the Tuna Sashimi which comes on top of crispy sushi rice, scallion, chipotle mayonnaise. It’s a very tasty bite and it’s the sort of moreish dish that you keep coming back for again and again. A new dish to try from Chef Jhon is the Red Snapper ceviche with jalapeno leche de tigre, and toasted quinoa. This dish is beautifully presented and the crisp, crunchy texture against the fresh snapper, lime and coriander is beyond delicious. This is a must-try dish and one of the best ceviches we've had in the city. Market Kitchen is also well known for its pizzas and before we know it, the truffle pizza with Fontina cheese arrives. It’s thin, crispy, generous with the cheese and mushroom, and is absolutely sensational - this is a must order – oozing cheese and subtle truffle flavour. The other pizza to try is the new Kale Pesto pizza which is packed full of great tastes and feels like a choice that is satisfying but without the guilt! For the mains, we choose the Parmesan-crusted chicken and the Tuna. The Parmesan-crusted chicken is the perfect dish with basil-lemon butter underneath the crispy chicken that is perfectly cooked and not too dry. We choose the jalapeno sauce to accompany the tuna loin which comes perfectly cooked with chargrilled peppers. The tuna is fresh and goes beautifully with the zesty jalapeno sauce. You can’t go past dessert at Market Kitchen so we opt for the Salted Caramel Ice Cream Sundae (which the restaurant is famous for) – it’s an absolute knockout with generous amounts of ice cream along with peanuts, popcorn and chocolate fudge sauce and stunning presentation. This restaurant continues to be strong in the capital due to its creative cuisine, excellent staff and gorgeous ambiance. ✤ 90

LIKE A DREAM If you've been feeling run down and are in need of some pampering, Heavenly Spa at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa is here to help out as FACT’s Angela Beitz discovers…

W

e all need time to totally shut off and indulge in some pampering due to busy lifestyles and not enough sleep. Heavenly Spa is a true sanctuary and they have loads of great treatments to get you feeling like brand new again. The spa is vast and airy and made up of six treatment rooms. There is an earthy atmosphere of nature unlike most spas that are usually dark and there is beautiful natural light from the outside that shines in. The interiors are simple and made of natural materials; stone, water and wood, paired with sleek and smooth finishes of glass tiles and polished surfaces, creating a soft, warm and welcoming space for a quiet and relaxing time at the spa. I’m welcomed with a cup of tea and hot towel. After filling in the treatment form, I head straight to the women’s changing area which houses a steam room and sauna as well as showers, lockers, and a comfortable changing area, with direct access to the treatment room area. I slip into the super soft robe and wait in the relaxation area for my therapist. I’m here for the Dream Experience which is an hour-long intense muscle massage to soothe away stress followed by an hour-long Elemis facial. I lay on the super soft table in the ambient room and my therapist thoughtfully places a large heat pad on my entire back as I have mentioned this is where most of my tension is. She then starts with my legs and tackles all the tight knots from toe to head. Specific attention is paid to my upper back and neck which feel particularly crunchy, but this is soon sorted out and by the end I feel like a new person. It’s then time for the facial using products from popular brand, Elemis. My therapist first asses my skin which she says needs evening out and hydrating. My face is double-cleansed using a very rich creamy cleanser and then it’s exfoliated. My therapist is gentle but thorough with the exfoliation as my skin is very fine and sensitive. Then comes the steam and that’s followed by the extractions which is a step in most good facials that is carried out to make sure all pores are clean. This is done in a very quick and efficient manner. An uplifting facial massage is then performed on the face and neck with a serum, before a thick hydrating mask is applied to complete the treatment serums. Finally, a moisturiser is applied to reveal glowing, healthy skin. Voila! I then retreat to the relaxation room for a ginger tea and some healthy cookies. This whole experience is utterly delightful and it’s perfect to get away from the stressors of the world for a few hours in beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended! ✤

SPA & WELLNESS •

T

he weather is heating up and this is the time when skin starts to take on a mind of its own and needs some extra TLC. If you’re in need of some serious pampering and a skin-sorting facial in luxury surroundings, then Emirates Palace Spa is your answer. The spa is large but has a lovely, relaxed feel with low lighting and Moroccan décor. The small touches such as white and red rose petals in bubbling fountains and warm service make this spa enchanting and relaxing. I fill in the consultation form while relaxing with a cold towel and a cup of tea. I am ushered upstairs to the treatment room and marvel at the décor. The whole spa has a beautiful Arabic vibe with gorgeous mosaic tiling in bright colours. I'm booked in for a 60-minute Active Haute Couture facial from the brand Linda Meredith, which is fairly new to the spa and is proving very popular for its instant results. The Haute Couture facial has been designed to create a unique treatment for each client by addressing their individual requirements. Trends are showing that many clients prefer a combination of treatments and it’s excellent here in the UAE due to many skin concerns from the water and dryness of constant air-conditioning. Offering this facial allows you the benefits of a deep cleanse, extraction and gentle re-surfacing, followed by one or two additions, achieving the best results in a shorter time frame. I am shown to the beautiful and tranquil treatment room by my therapist and I change into a fluffy robe and shuffle over to a large

chair in soft slippers to have my foot welcome ritual done. My feet are submerged in a warm bowl of water with white, pink and yellow rose petals and are cleaned with a salt scrub and milk. I chat to the therapist about the facial and my areas of concern. She suggests a deep cleaning facial with a boost of anti-ageing. I lay on the treatment bed which is beyond comfortable with double duvets and lots of cushioning. My therapist analyses my skin by feeling it, by holding her hands around my face, by touching and pushing the skin, by rubbing it and gently pinching it, to identify the key problems. Dehydration, a bit of congestion and some fine lines are my main concerns. As previously mentioned, The Active Haute Couture facial has been designed to create a unique treatment for each client by addressing their individual requirements. My skin is cleansed on the surface followed by a second deeper cleanse. Then a thorough consultation is carried out to assess any skin problems and it's evident I have some small fine lines and some pigmentation and that I also need a deep cleanse. A gritty enzyme scrub is then applied to kill dead skin cells and a boosting serum is applied to plump the skin and then my skin is steamed to open the pores. This is then followed by a natural micro-peel serum which removes dead cells and cleans deep beneath the surface. The serums can be applied in different strengths and areas of the face depending on the client’s skin. Its anti-bacterial properties helps with the reduction of everyday breakouts and softens fine lines and wrinkles. This is followed by a massage and mask with personalised products chosen by the therapist to produce the best possible results. Next a beautiful hydrating mask is applied to my face and neck while my shoulders and arms are massaged. My complexion is left feeling fresh, clean, glowing and totally plump. There is no redness and I walk out of the treatment with glowing skin, seriously impressed by the facial. ✤

SOUND AS A BELL FACT’s Angela Beitz heads to one of the city’s latest spots to try a new spa treatment at the popular Abu Dhabi EDITION. The Abu Dhabi EDITION has become a firm favourite in the capital with its chic selection of restaurants and modern hotel rooms. Sleek contemporary lines, a modern minimalist space, superb lighting and the harmonious feel of a pristine home away from home is what you will find here if you have not yet visited and, trust me, you should. This is the essence of the EDITION, and I never tire of the delicious decor and understated class of this hotel. FACT has been to all their dining outlets but it was time to check out their spa. The spa space is what you would expect from the brand; a soft, organic atmosphere welcomes guests to savour signature beverages, hand-blended tonics and light refreshments. Muted grey tones and low lighting follow the rest of the hotel's theme with small vases of pink roses and large orchids dotted around the spa. There are seven treatment suites where your experiences will be tailored to specific needs with customised treatments featuring bespoke scent, sound, touch and premium products. I'm shown into the lounge where you can sip on detox water and dried fruits while you get ready for the spa experience. I'm trying something very different on this visit, the 60-minute Himalayan Sound Healing therapy. I've not tried this before and it's the only spa in Abu Dhabi offering this treatment. To start this off, in the lounge area I’m asked to first take our shoes off and to step into one of the giant Himalayan bowls. I put my hand on the table and close my eyes as the therapist sounds the bowls and moves them around my body. It seems strange at first and you can feel the vibrations

of the bowls through your body but there is something super calming about it. I am shown by my lovely therapist to a contemporary spa suite where I change into a robe and get ready for the experience. I lay on the massage table face up and the idea is that the bowls help you to enter into a healing and harmonising zone and lull you into a deep meditative state of mind while promoting an increased sense of wellbeing. The bowls work because they offer so many different aspects in one: frequency, harmony and vibration. It starts with large bowls around the legs and again I feel the vibrations and then they are placed on my body and moved up the legs; it’s a feeling you really need to experience but it brings total relaxation and most people fall into a very deep sleep. This is then continued with smaller bowls for the arms and head and lastly the stomach. The deeply meditative and peaceful state created by the sound of singing bowls also creates the perfect environment for clarity and relaxation and it really works. While I didn't fall asleep, I finish the treatment completely rested and relaxed and feel calm. I'm told to lay on the bed for a good five to 10 minutes so I can slowly wake up a bit and adapt back to the surroundings. I am then shown to a very private lounge area to sip a ginger tea and to enjoy a few dates. This is a really different treatment and I personally really enjoyed it. It's great for when you are really stressed or have not been sleeping well and need some total me-time. Highly recommended. ✤

CITY INSIDER

Claus Burbat General Manager, Catch Abu Dhabi

Hi Claus! Tell us three things that set Catch Abu Dhabi apart from its competitors... There are many reasons that set Catch apart from its competitors. Mainly, Catch is a stunning venue, with a super-stylish dining room, an incredible outdoor terrace overlooking the sea and a swanky rooftop bar which leaves you instantly mesmerised. Second, the restaurant’s interior design is built around a coastal and maritime style that you usually see in decor magazines but never visit. With its open floor plan, and windows all around, it gives you a welcoming light and cosy theme and, of course, great views of the sea. Last but by no means the least, in the dining area it features a long communal wooden table that directly 98

overlooks the kitchen and chefs preparing sushi, not to mention that we have a gorgeous 20” x 46” inch screen that displays short videos of major cities around the world – guests absolutely love it and stay longer to watch the story unfold. What are your favourite cultural hotspots in Abu Dhabi and why? On my days off, I usually prefer to go to Saadiyat Beach for the daytime to get some sun and make sure to top up on my vitamin D. Other days I like to just have a long walk around Marassi, and the Corniche in Abu Dhabi. When it’s quiet, I have time and space to reflect on life and what my next steps will be professionally and personally. Most of my evenings, I spend with close friends and go around Abu Dhabi to try and test new places that

have opened up, making competitor analysis. For me, friends and family are very important. There’s nothing better in life for me than having a nice glass of wine, good food and talking about life. Share with us some of your professional goals for the rest of 2019… This is my first time working with the official title of GM, having worked the last two years in Dubai for Meraas as acting GM. So, it’s important for me to grow in my current position and perform at my best. I want to be not only a success at the role of manager, but also as a mentor, which is very important for me. My goal in regards to Catch is to maintain its leading position as best seafood restaurant and increase its current profitability and success.
