Reboot and Try Again “Past and Present I know well; each is a friend and sometimes an enemy to me. But it is the quiet, beckoning Future, an absolute stranger, with whom I have fallen madly in love.” - Richelle E. Goodrich

id you make a New Year’s resolution list? No? Me either. And my reason for not doing so is pretty simple; the only pressure I like is the kind that involves finishing off what’s on my plate and keeping up-to-date with HBO’s new TV series - that’s right, I’m a netflix and binge eat type of girl, so resolutions aren’t always the best way for me to get results. Instead, show me a good documentary on the Travel Channel and believe me when I say that the motivation to get up, do the daily grind and make plans is REAL. In fact, my travel bucket list is as long as a Victoria’s Secret model’s legs and, as far as 2017 goals are concerened, my mission is to tick off as many destinations as possible. Weirdly enough, there are so many places in the Gulf that I’ve yet to visit - something the whole FACT office had in common. And so, we put together a mini GCC Bucket List to inspire your life experiences in 2017. Turn to p21 and see what this beautiful region has to offer. From the skies to the land and the sea, there’s something to entice everyone who’s in search of excitement beyond the brunch and nightlife scene. Abu Dhabi’s fashion, food, entertainment and tech scene is bursting with amazing street style, world-class cuisine and the latest must-have gadgets - we’ve got it all in this issue: Gap’s Fall ‘16 collection (p63); a special Chef ’s Q&A for an exciting event at Emirates Palace (p79); Culinary Spotlight on Tamba (p84); a revisit of the menu at 18 Degrees (p88); and the very cool Snapchat Spectacles (p60). Starting the year off in true celebratory trend, expect brand new happenings, awesome dining deals and plenty of cultural activities. If you haven’t been already - take advantage of this gorgeous weather and get outside - walk, run, stargaze, find a sunset spot - just enjoy this winter weather. Here’s to making 2017 way better than the last! Until the month of love... time for a Westworld marathon.☺

Deliveroo Abu Dhabi Taking the stress out of ordering in, is the br and new Deliveroo service. It celebr ated its first anniversa ry in the UAE with a l aunch in Abu Dhab i.

Deliveroo, the premium food delivery service offering food orders direct to your door in 32 minutes or less, celebrated its one-year anniversary in the UAE with the official launch of its second regional outpost in Abu Dhabi. The premium location-based service offers users the ability to pay and track the order’s progress from purchase to delivery, via both webbased and mobile app technology. After launching in Dubai, in December 2015, Deliveroo has quickly became a popular choice for premium food delivery services in the region and has shaken up the way UAE residents think about ordering in. In the GCC region, Deliveroo is rapidly filling the market gap for premium food delivery from some of the best restaurants around. Deliveroo originally launched in 2013 in London with the aim of offering the best food delivery experience in the world. Unlike the majority of food delivery businesses that are purely online marketplaces for takeaway restaurants, Deliveroo 8

TriYAS 2017 The seventh edition of the region’s favourite first timer triathlon will take place at Yas Marina Circuit in February. A total capacity of 1,500 people of different ages and abilities are set to take up the annual TriYAS challenge which will take place at Yas Marina Circuit for the seventh time. The hugely popular swim, cycle and run challenge will see people from all over the UAE participate in the region’s biggest entry-level triathlon – with more than a third of the 1,500 racers in TriYAS 2016 being first-time triathletes. Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, said: “Our mission every year is to help competitors get in the best possible shape so they can focus on setting and achieving their personal goals. That goal can be everything from standing on the winners’ podium to beating your previous best to simply completing a hugely rewarding physical challenge and picking up your medal. “This year we are making a considerable effort to encourage children to take part in KidsTRI by refunding the registration fee for any child who participates, as well as having dedicated youth ambassadors, youth training groups and bikes available for use,” he added. “The young generation has a safe, traffic-free facility at their disposal – we want to encourage them to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.” Every effort is taken to ensure racers are prepared for their big day, from a dedicated 12-week, pre-event triathlon fitness programme and a series of instructional videos by former champions, to detailed race briefings and a night before pasta party.

“TriYAS provides hundreds of members of the UAE community with the opportunity to channel their health and fitness goals into a single event,” said Dr. Michael Bitzer, CEO of Daman. “This in turn we hope will encourage them on to continue with a healthier, more active lifestyle, as we continue to change mindsets towards health, fitness and nutrition, leading us to our goal of creating healthy communities across the country. Last year we saw increased

numbers of Emiratis and expatriates alike compete in the triathlon; we’re hopeful to see numbers increase once again for all nationalities in the 2017 edition.” TriYAS by Daman’s ActiveLife includes two distances for adults: the Olympic category, with a 1,500-metre swim, 40-kilometre bike race and 10-kilometre run and the shorter Sprint category, involving a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike course and five-kilometre run. TriYAS will include KidsTRI for children aged between nine and 16-years-old to test themselves over a 50-metre swim, six-kilometre cycle and a 1.5-kilometre run. The UAE’s only twilight triathlon also includes a female-only category and a star-studded pro field. Entrants will be encouraged to share their own personal stories of their experiences across social media, using the hashtag #TriYAS in a bid to spur others on. ✤ GO: Visit www.yasmarinacircuit.com for more information. fact magazine

New Year, New Museum Modern 21st Century Museum to welcome visitors from January. Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated entity for culture, arts and heritage, announced that the Etihad Museum will open its doors to the general public from January 7 onwards. This follows the recent official inauguration of the museum in early December, 2016 during the UAE’s 45th National Day, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Members of the Federal Supreme Council. The Museum’s management has completed the programming and the operation plan to welcome visitors all week long from 10am to 8pm and will present educational exhibits and programmes that show the chronological events of the agreement signing and Union declaration in 1971. His Excellency Saeed Al Nabouda, Acting Director General of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: “This landmark heritage initiative is an important manifestation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to create an important national UAE cultural and tourist landmark. It will 10

offer the public a valuable opportunity to discover year-round the events before, during and after the Union agreement’s signing in 1971. “In doing so, the museum will enhance visitor understanding of the rights, privileges and responsibilities bestowed upon the nation’s citizens through the UAE constitution.” As part of Dubai Culture’s wider role in establishing a regulatory framework for the Emirate’s heritage sector, Etihad Museum will contribute to the realisation of the Dubai Plan 2021 objectives - to consolidate the Emirate’s position as a home for creative individuals who are proud of their cultural identity. Visitors will be able to enjoy reading books at the Dubai Public Library branch within the museum, which will hold three thousand different titles on the UAE’s national and social history. Pictures, movies and documents from 1968 to 1974 will be on display to provide numerous points of interest throughout the nation building process of the nation, all of which is captured in the Etihad Museum. The museum complex extends across the Union House building, a 123-metre flag pole, a parking building with a 100-car capacity, with an additional 100 outdoor parking spots. The Etihad Museum’s new permanent pavilion is inspired by the shape of a manuscript, with seven columns which emulate the pens used to sign the 1971 Union agreement, while the museum’s identity is inspired from the colours of the UAE flag, the Union’s identity and the seven emirates. ✤ GO: Visit www.dubaiculture.gov.ae for more information.

Butcher & Still With its classic design and glamorous vibe, Butcher & Still anchors Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island as the new destination in the capital’s dining and nightlife scene. The modern interpretation of a 1920s Chicago steakhouse, serving American prime-cuts, great sides and classic cocktails, the restaurant’s sleek contemporary design contrasts the retro décor elements, featuring rich dark woods and distressed leather banquettes. Eclectic details continue right into the bathrooms, where unique accents line the tile work. Located off the lobby level, this restaurant has a capacity for over 250 guests, with both indoor and outdoor seating. H

i Chef Nobu! When did you first realise that you wanted to work in the food industry? After a couple of year’s following my father’s death, my brother took me to a sushi restaurant. The experience turned out to be incredible. I remember the sliding doors and the energy of the place. I also remember vividly sitting on the sushi counter with my brother and ordering a couple of things from the menu. I could see the Chef preparing the dishes, cutting the ingredients, making the rolls the whole atmosphere was beyond anything I have ever experienced. You have to understand that back in my days, sushi was a very high end food - expensive, not everybody could afford it. So, after I saw all that, I was wowed and I wanted to have that lifestyle. What was the most important lesson you learned on your first job in the culinary world? I started working when I was 18-years-old. I worked at a sushi restaurant in Tokyo for three years. During my time there I did everything except cooking. I used to go to the fish market with my mentor, early in the morning, to pick up fresh fish; I washed the dishes, ran errands, and, basically, I started from the bottom. I would wake up at 5am and go to sleep around midnight, working the entire day. I never complained because I was determined to become a chef, I wanted to do this more than anything else. After three years I earned my place in the kitchen, learned how to slice fish, and clean it. Now there are sushi schools everywhere, but back then the only way to become a sushi chef was learning on your own and looking at what others were doing. Having a mentor and working your way up. What made you take that trip from Japan to Peru? When I was a kid, I had two dreams in my life, one was to become a chef and the other one was to be like my father. My father travelled outside of Japan, so I wanted to do the same and see something different from Japan and experience a life in other countries. Every single time I would miss my father I used to look at pictures of him. One of the photos that always made a big impact on me was my father with the native people of Parao. I was always fascinated by this image. After six or seven years working in Tokyo, I met a man of Japanese and Peruvian origin. He was coming from Peru every year to Japan, and he would always tell me about the variety of

You have to understand that back in my days, sushi was a very high end food - expensive, not everybody could afford it. fresh fish that Lima has. Lima is very close to the Pacific Ocean, so there are many varieties of fresh fish. For me, that was very interesting, and besides there are many Japanese immigrants there. Then he offered me to open a restaurant in Peru. For me, Peru was the amazon so I could relate to this place thanks to that picture of my father. What was your first impression of Peru? Well, before I moved there to live and work, I went to check the place out, so I knew what I was getting myself into. At first it was kind of shocking because Peru was like 30 or 40 years behind Japan in terms of technology and other aspects. But the people were so nice. All the locals were very welcoming and warm and the country was so beautiful. It is funny because back in the day sushi wasn’t popular at all, people didn’t eat it, because it was so expensive. But lots of big companies from Japan were located there, so I used to get a lot of business from them. You also worked and lived in Anchorage, Alaska - that must have been a total adventure. Tell us about your experience there… It was a challenge indeed, a culture shock. I helped build the restaurant and put money into the project. Finally we did the grand opening night, it was a great party, a very big success. Everything was going well. After 15 days from the opening night, I was having my first day off and I was celebrating with the crew; we were so happy about what we had accomplished. Then, I received a phone call from my business partner telling me to get down to the restaurant because there was a fire. I told him that this was not a good time for jokes; today is my first day off since the opening. I realised that he was telling the truth, so I actually bolted out of the house - it was very scary. Alaska is a very small city, and in the winter time the nights are so cold and it is very dangerous. All of a sudden, I can see my restaurant burning down, my dream, my money, my efforts - it was absolutely devastating. This actually happened on Thanksgiving Day, which crazily and coincidentally is today (we nod in disbelief !). For a long period of time I was besides myself, I felt so depressed and destroyed. But, eventually, I got back up again, thanks to my family. fact magazine

CELEBRITY EXCLUSIVE

How much of your time do you put into the management side of the business, on a global scale? Maybe, for the last 10 years, I have travelled nine to 10 months a year my home at the moment is in L.A. I go as much as possible to all the Nobu restaurants around the world, actually my CEO travels with me everywhere, so I’m focused on talking to the chefs, to see our signature dishes and make sure they are all meet brand expectations. And to try out new dishes too. I also check the quality of the fish and how the team is working together, that’s very important to me, to know every single person of the team and make sure everything runs well. That’s my job while my C.E.O deals with the investors, partners, buyers and so on. So, would are you a businessman or chef ? (Laughs) Definitely Chef ! Finally, what do you like cooking and eating at home? I don’t care about gorgeous, over-thetop meals. I actually like when my wife cooks for me, anything that she cooks for me like meat and fish, I love it. But, the most important thing about home cooked meals is the love that you put in. Just the love. ✤ GO Visit Nobu Doha at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha. Go to www.noburestaurants.com/doha or call +974 4494 8600 for reservations and more information.

Seawings has fast become the word in adventure and luxury sightseeing in the UAE, taking tourists up on breathtaking aerial tours of the Emirates, from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas, Ras Al Khaimah and all the stunning landscape in between. Arrange a trip into the clouds on a Cessna Caravan 208 Amphibious aircraft, which operates on both land and water and seats up to nine passengers and one pilot. A trip on one of Seawings’ light passenger aircrafts is far from a luxury jet experience; the roar of the turboprop engines and the white spray of the water as you barrel down Yas Marina’s yacht channel for take-off is an allencompassing sensation. Once airborne, you’ll feel every wind, breeze and air current whilst onboard the seaplane, making for a truly exhilarating experience. However, it’s the spectacular aerial views of the mangroves, coves, islets, landmarks and city skylines that will dominate your memories of the flight. GO: Book the Abu Dhabi ‘Scenic’ or ‘Aerial’ tour with Seawings today. Visit www. seawings.ae or call (0)4 807 0708 for more information.

Go Hard or Go Home Skydive, Dubai Of course! Haute Cuisine Roberto’s, Abu Dhabi There’s plenty of street food and quirk out there to curb your cravings, but what about when all you want is a mind-blowing, luxury dining experience? Abu Dhabi’s newest highend venue has to be on your list of places to try for 2017! Why? Well, Roberto’s is a classic and polished indoor and outdoor venue offering up Italian gastronomy like nothing you’ve tasted before (trust us, the food is IN-SANE). The absolute top dish to try is the creative Polpo, Cacio E Pepe, E Carciofi, which is slow-cooked, roasted octopus. It’s a tribute to Abu Dhabi, mingling modern techniques with Ancient Roman ingredients: artichoke and cacio e pepe sauce, made of Pecorino cheese, milk and black pepper. Hands down, it’s the best octopus dish we’ve tried in the entire GCC. And for those who shy away from anything that says octopus – THIS is going to be your bucket list best!

Epic Eats

No doubt, one of the best reasons to travel around the GCC is the limitless food options. This year, think (or rather eat) out of the box and head to some of these cool restaurants for out-of-thisworld cuisine.

Stargazing If you haven’t gone camping, dune bashing or on the famous evening safari in to the desert, you’re missing out on one of the Gulf’s most popular and favourite pastimes. Let us tell you why 2017 should be a sandy one…

28

fact magazine

For thousands of years, camping was a way of life for the Bedouin of the Gulf, as tribes kept on a constant move across the vast desert, setting up tents and following herds of camel and sheep to greener pastures. Today, there is very little left of that world, and like most long-established traditions, camping has matured with time. Taking a trip into the desert is more of a must-have experience or a result of the need to escape mundane daily tasks and the city bustle, and to seek solace in the vast emptiness. And there are many different ways to go about planning and visiting the desert. Tour companies offer some of the best and safest packages, customdesigned to suit specific time frames and budgets. Desert safaris are most popular; where people are whisked away in a 4x4 for a thrilling ride over massive sand dunes, followed by dinner, dance, and activities in the desert, or an overnight stay. The UAE and Qatari deserts are some of the best in the region, housing a number of camping options.

bucket list

WHERE TO SET UP CAMP UAE

WHERE TO SET UP CAMP QATAR Located north of Dukhan, the Ras Abrouq peninsula is a favourite spot for weekend campers who come to enjoy the golden sands and pretty limestone scenery. The place is full of wildlife with plenty of animal sightings including hedgehogs, kangaroo mice, and the sand gazelle. An hour’s drive from Mesaieed is Inland Sea (Khor al Adaid), Qatar’s most famous and popular camping destination. The country’s southernmost point, the area is only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles. The scenery there is breathtaking with towering sand dunes soaring from the water’s edge. At the opposite side of Qatar is Umm Tais National Park which has some the most beautiful sandy beaches, and is where Doha’s kite surfers can be found on the weekend. Offshore, a few small islands surrounded by mudflats can be reached by vehicle when the tide is low, where you can find nesting turtles and stunning mangroves. While you’re in Umm Tais don’t forget to check out the pearling city of Al Zubara, which is only a few kilometers away.

The UAE desert is full of wonderful places to pitch your tent and gaze the stars. Don’t expect great facilities in many of these spots but do get ready for space and freedom, and for an experience that will give you a real taste of the country’s outdoors. A two and a half hour journey will get you to the Ras Al Khaimah desert. Here, the true nature of camping comes to life as you can set up near one of the small farms (be sure not too disturb the locals!) surrounded by sand dunes, little oasis farms and camel pens. Take an early morning drive and you might just see some Arabian Oryx, wild birds and pretty banyan trees too. Make sure to take everything, including lots of food and drink, because there are no everyday facilities in the area. The epic slice of Rub Al Khali (the empty quarter) deserves at least a two or three day trip! Liwa is 200km southwest of Abu Dhabi and though it might seem quite a trek, it’d the world’s biggest sand desert, so it’s well worth the drive. These sand mountains are relatively accessible by 4x4 and the whole region is scattered with curved sand dunes and dramatic plunges so if you’re there for a spot of dune bashing (you’d be crazy not to) make sure you’ve got an experienced driver at the wheel. There are plenty of great spots in this desert, dotted with freshwater pools and date plantations; all you have to do is take any road from Liwa oasis or follow the signs for Tal Mireb (Moreeb Hill). If you’re new to this whole desert camping thing then something a little closer to Abu Dhabi like Shwaib near Dubai would be the perfect choice. This is where you’ll find fairly easy access to hidden campsites where stargazing from the top of a dune will wipe away all your worries. It’s close enough to civilisation that you can get your friends to drop off a Starbucks coffee in the morning, but it’s faraway for you to you enjoy and appreciate the stunning scenery of mountains, flat plains and wadis! Shwaib borders Oman so it’s always a good idea to bring your passport! fact magazine

Periodical Reincarnation Andrea Ignacio’s artwork has a big influence from magazines and the idea of personal evolution. Interested and intrigued to learn more, FACT’s Shabana Adam caught up with the Bahrain-based artist to find out what sparks her creativity and artistic style.

arts interview

As much as I want people to like what I’ve created, and it would be a bonus if the pieces sell, I’ll admit that I create this work entirely for myself – because I find it beautiful, because it gives me a sense of pride, and because it’s entirely autonomous and unhampered by outside influence or obligation. As long as that remains true, I hope to keep making art.

W

hen we found out that Bahrain’s latest arts exhibition is somewhat inspired by the life of a magazine, we just had to meet the lady behind the striking work. Andrea Ignacio is just like you and me; when she’s finished reading and holding onto a copy of a magazine for so long, she’s overcome with a little guilt every time she has to throw one away. That’s all of us, right? This is what led to Andrea’s current exhibition, Periodical Reincarnation, on display at InTouch Gallery in Bahrain. “The idea of Periodical Reincarnation, literally reflected in the title, stems from the odd sense of guilt I feel every time I throw away a magazine,” Andrea says. “It seems like their value, and the lifetime of the images within, is so short lived and I wanted to find a way to give longer life to what I loved most in magazines rather than simply moving on to the next one,” she continues. “I’m also constantly in the process of personal evolution, as many people are, so the title reflects where I am now too.” Visitors will be met initially, from a distance, by abstract swathes of colours. Up close they’ll find a tsunami of individual images culled from dozens of magazines, including a jello hand grenade, an antique electric chair, dozens of animals and hundreds of patterns. “My hope is that there is at least one piece for every viewer that brings up a feeling, memory or emotion, without them necessarily being able to say why,” Andrea explains. Surprisingly, Andrea has never strived to be an artist. Instead, she loves looking at, learning about and collecting art. She believes that everybody learns things differently, and that the arts is a fundamental part of rounding out how we teach and how we learn. “I had just accepted decades ago that I wasn’t actively artistic and that my talents were more cerebral or written, than visual,” she tells us. “This entire thing is as surprising to me as can be. That said, I believe the arts in general are as fundamental to wellbeing as science and math are judged to be, in fact, more so. “Languages and math are easier if you have studied music. Choir and playing an instrument, something I did throughout childhood, and other performing arts teach discipline, cooperation and confidence,” she adds. “Art inspires expression, consciously and unconsciously, when we’re simply letting it come out, and being able to have that outlet is healthier for our wellbeing than simply pouring over reading, writing, andarithmetic textbooks and rigidly being required to memorise facts.” Andrea’s work, particularly in this exhibition, is definitely not your typical piece of art. Far from a beautiful canvas painting, this exhibition takes on a rather edgy and unusual use of materials to achieve an interesting finish that will intrigue viewers to think, feel and react. fact magazine

41

arts interview

“The work is mostly monochromatic, single-medium collage,” Andrea says. “I use only canvas, decoupage/collage glue and images from magazines. I come from a very artistic and creative family and my mother taught art before she was married, but out of six kids I’ve always been the one who cannot draw, didn’t create anything as a child and does not have any artistic practice,” she admits. “I’ve always had the imagination, but only in recent years have I started experimenting with manifesting my own ideas. Doing decoupage is something I learned about from my late sister and a few years ago I made jewellery boxes, frames and other small items as gifts. Collage is just an extension of this,” Andrea says. Andrea’s artistic style is one that is hugely inspired by colours, with her original intention for Periodical Reincarnation to simply showcase a gorgeous flow of light to dark, and patterns. But the pieces turned into something entirely different after they were assembled. She also limits herself intentionally and doesn’t customcut or manipulate any of the pieces unless absolutely necessary. “I want the art to become what it is supposed to be, rather than trying to make the images conform to my ideas,” she explains. “The only exception is The Green Man, where each image I used was cut in half.” As a bit of an underdog artist turned firsttime exhibitor, Andrea’s advise for other budding creatives is, simply, “just start”. She says: “Sit down, grab the macaroni or water paint or clay and start playing around with what you see in your head. Most of the obstacle to creating is that first step and once that is over the possibilities grow drastically,” Andrea adds. “There’s no need to spend a lot of money, take a class, or even be perfect. All you need to do is start creating, and your path will reveal itself.” We can definitely get onboard the freespirited, spontaneous art train; you should get a ticket too and find your way to new, imaginative places! ✤ GO: Curated by Stafford & Sharabi Art Consultants, Periodical Reincarnation is on display at InTouch Gallery, InTouch Integrated Chiropractic Spine Centre, Bahrain. 42

.A.E Unlimited’s mission is to nurture and develop emerging artists in the UAE. Munira Al Sayegh, an emerging curator from the Emirates, is currently working with eight commissioned conceptual artists and a ninth internationally established acclaimed guest artist from Saudia Arabia, Manal Al Dowayan. Bayn: the In-Between is a collaboration between U.A.E. Unlimited and a number of UAE-based artists, curators, and institutions, highlighting the collective nature of the creative community in the UAE today. Hosted at Warehouse421 in Abu Dhabi, the exhibition is being developed with the support of Maraya Productions in Sharjah. Maya Allison, Founding Director of NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, is the Senior Curatorial Adviser to the project, and mentoring the exhibition’s curator Munira Al Sayegh. The participating artists represent a wide range of creative practices that explore the various reactions to the transformations happening today in our society. These include Emirati installation and multi-media artist Asma Al Ahmed, Iraqi architect & designer Hatem Hatem, Emirati musician & sound artist Maytha Al Shamsi, Jordanian portrait artist Saif Mhaisen, Emirati textile artist Sara Al Haddad, Syrian landscape artist & designer Talin Hazbar, Bahraini-American documentary artist Nasser Al Zayani and Emirati architect & illustrator Talal Al Ansari. The annual exhibition centres on new commissioned works, which will explore the divide between the selves that dwelled in the recent past and their contemporaries, examining what lies in-between to deconstruct and reconstruct labels, boundaries, and identities assigned. The artists are currently developing their commissioned pieces while undertaking monthly reading and discussion sessions with Munira Al Sayegh. Shobha Pia Shamdsani, Executive Director of U.A.E. Unlimited, said: “Through U.A.E. Unlimited’s partnerships with local initiatives in the UAE, we are able to offer emerging artists the advantage of working directly with experienced creative professionals whose insights are invaluable to the development of these young artists. We are delighted to have Maya Allison as Senior Adviser for this exhibition, who can offer keen insights into the arts and culture landscape of the UAE through her role as Director and Curator of NYUAD Art Gallery.” ✤

Big Screen xXx: Return of Xander Cage What’s it about? Xander Cage, after having been left for dead emerges out of a self-imposed exile to retrieve the seemingly destructive Pandora’s Box, a powerful weapon with the ability to control all the military satellites in the world. In his quest, Xander finds himself embroiled in a fatal conspiracy.

Director: D.J. Caruso cast: Vin Diesel, Deepika Padukone, Donnie Yen Why it’s worth watching? Vin Diesel and adrenaline-charged blockbusters seem to go hand in hand. After a 14-year-long hiatus, the actor returns as everyone’s favourite action-man Xander Cage and he doesn’t disappoint. Shot in the picturesque locations of Canada, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines, this film is cinematically pleasing and offers an exhilarating experience. Xander recruits his own cohort of thrill-seeking junkies who add their own charm and character to the plot. What makes this film worth watching is not just its action-packed scenes but also its impressive cast. The stars of the movie not just wow us with their acting prowess but they’re also incredibly easy on the eyes! Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Augustus Eugene Gibbons along with newbies including Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev and Toni Collete. While Deepika Padukone marks her Hollywood debut and is someone to really watch out for! If all this isn’t enough to get you pumped up, a cameo from Barca hunk Neymar is sure to do the trick. Just go and watch it – then tweet us your verdict!

I, Daniel Blake

“What makes this film worth watching is not just its action-packed scenes but also its impressive cast. The stars of the movie not just wow us with their acting prowess but they’re also incredibly easy on the eyes!”

What’s it about: After losing his job due to his debilitating medical condition, Daniel Blake finds himself in a seemingly inescapable situation. The film walks us through his fight against the authorities along with a single mother stuck in a similar situation.

– xXx: Return of Xander Cage

“The confronting nature of the film may not be for everyone but it’s definitely worth your attention. ”

Director: Ken Loach cast: Dave Johns, Hayley Squires, Dylan Mckiernan, Briana Shann

– I, Daniel Blake

Why it’s worth watching? Every once in a while we need a film that shakes us to our very core and makes us question the way of the world. I, Daniel Blake does just that. The amalgamation of Paul Laverty’s eloquent writing and Ken Loach’s realistic screenplay gives you a lot to think about. This movie won’t leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy but will engulf you with the hard-hitting reality of modern-day struggles. It unearths the raw reality of the British Benefits System and how it feeds off the vulnerable. We follow Daniel and Katie who are brought together by circumstances no one should have to endure. The system that was meant to protect them becomes the source of conflict and pain. The confronting nature of the film may not be for everyone but it’s definitely worth your attention.

Scrappy Little Nobody By Anna Kendrick

Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ By Kid Cudi

After venturing into alternative rock, Kid Cudi does a 360 by returning to rapping in his sixth studio album. The hotly-awaited track list is split into acts akin to his Man on the Moon album series. Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ is a stark departure from his last album and is definitely what we, as his fans, want to see more of. It includes the singles Frequency, Surfin’ and Baptized in Fire. Frequency oscillates between muted croons and staccato raps. The track is a direct product of Cudi’s original style with a more subdued hip-hop ballad sound. Surfin’ featuring Pharrell has a more upbeat electronic brass – a little bit of experimenting that we love. Cudi’s idiosyncratic style featuring the union of hip-hop, rock and dance is what makes his music so distinct. From writing his own songs to directing them, Cudi does it all and he seems to know what he’s doing. His unique vocals and contagious beats are a staple in his latest offering as well. While his previous album had left some fans disappointed, Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ could be his saving grace.

Night People

We all need a little pick-me-up every now and then to lift our spirits and to make sailing through life a little bit easier. Who better to provide us with much-needed words of wisdom than the super witty Anna Kendrick? The funny-woman has compiled all her life’s memorable moments in her autobiographical collection of essays while being as entertaining and quirky as ever. The essays feature moments from her New England upbringing to being one of Hollywood’s most loved actresses. Scrappy Little Nobody is the perfect companion to snuggle up with this winter.

By You Me At Six

Rock lovers rejoice! You Me At Six are coming out with their fifth studio album, Night People and it surpasses everything they have done before. There’s a clear shift from their former sound towards a more rock-influenced style. While keeping their signature edgy, pop-punk persona intact, they dabble in a more guitardriven and drum-heavy technique. The English rockers seem to have come a long way since their last release, Cavalier Youth, which was considerably tamer. Through Night People they try to move away from their preferred pop-rock vibe to a more rock heavy production. Josh Franceschi’s seductive vocals entwined with the captivating beats are enough to push you into a rock induced trance. While not everyone might be up for the change You Me At Six are introducing, it’s surely a change for the better and could very well reintroduce them into the rock realm. If their lead single is any indication of how the album is going to be, then it’s definitely one to watch out for!

E

ven if you’re not a travel junkie we’re still pretty sure that you’ll have come across one W hotel or another (but seriously, what are you doing with your life?) – not least through its energetic neon logo that just screams hotel cool. The W Dubai Al Habtoor City fulfils everything the brand stands for and more - how could it not, being in Dubai?

The Style So, if you like the combo of hot pink and jet black, you’re in luck. The W is all about creating colour contrasts that stand out like a sore thumb and creates a real powerhouse of slick hospitality that is so fun to be a part of. The décor is stimulating in every way and amps up your energy from the outset. Everywhere you turn, there’s bold design – the hotel’s exterior is flashy (in a way that suits Dubai, to be honest) with neon lighting, outlining the 33-storey building. Even the lifts are super swanky and decadent with fabric walls in the way that a James Bond movie set would look like. Overall, the hotel’s style is a full-on sensory experience.

The Digs Well, one thing’s for sure: you’ve never been in a more modern, high tech and aesthetically fun room before. It’s all about loud typographical messages 50

WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT

i.e. EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW (aka the in-room guide book to room- service, Dubai information and more), SO VAIN (nail kit and shower cap), BARE ALL (shaving kit) and FRESH MOUTH (dental kit). It’s all very tongue-in-cheek but don’t think they skimp on quality – the black-carpeted rooms are massive and very Jetson spaceage and you feel right at home when you walk in. Most hotel rooms come with an iPod dock but for iPhone 5 – hallelujah, the W is in with the times. iPhone 6 and 7ers, rejoice, you can charge your phones on the dock! The compartmentalised

rainshower and separate bathroom add to the whole ‘many dimensions’ effect while the standalone bathtub adds an element of luxury. But what got us jumping on the bed in total child-like excitement was discovering the secret but oh-so-lavish bar room. At first we thought it was simply a door leading into an interconnecting room – it wasn’t until the bell boy asked if we had gone through, to which we were slightly bemused. When he opened the door to yet another dimension, we were blown out the water. The fully equipped bar, the sprawling flat screen and the white leather seating is again, the stuff of a James Bond scene.

The Grub Epicurean pleasures, you say? Well, they’ve got all that and more at the W. We checked out NAMU, the Japanese-Korean outlet. Now, we’ve had more Japanese food to satisfy the most ardent Japanese, so we sidestepped a bit and took advantage of the Korean offerings. But of course, we started off with a Narita Maki Roll: Tempura Prawn, BBQ Eel, Avocado, Gobo, Cucumber – it was reassuringly good and packed lots of punch. We then had a Namu Steamed Bun (all-time favourite comfort food): Wagyu Short Ribs, White Kimchi, Ssam Jang, which was both fluffy, dense and covered in finger-licking sauce. fact magazine

51

And then, brace yourselves, came the Korean Seafood Pancake Hamul Pa Jeon: Scallop, Prawn, Cuttlefish, Spring Onion, Wakame Ponzu Salad. This was next-level fantastic and unusual. It was everything from soft, smooth, thick to screaming with flavours. We cannot recommend this dish enough. When it came to the mocktails, they were also, delightfully exotic in name and ingredients. We went for the Amaririsu which means Shy and is made up of Yuzu, Passionfruit, and Tonic Water which was prickly sweet and washed down our amazing food nicely.

The Edge Located within Al Habtoor City, the Emirate’s first fully-integrated urban resort, the hotel offers insider access to Dubai, with a full calendar of W Happenings showcasing what’s new and next in fashion, music and entertainment. 52

The whole vibe surrounding the property is buzzing. The staff too, are super cool. You can talk to them as if they were your friends, because they’re that open and approachable. The hotel’s club-like (but not offensively loud) party music adds to the fun and makes you feel like you’re part of the coolest community in town – if only for the weekend! ✤

The Porsche 718 Cayman

Recently we flew to the Black Forest in Germany to try out the new Porsche 718 Cayman, the latest generation of the brand’s scorching little compact sports coupe.

56

G

iven the popularity of recent generations of the Cayman, with its mesmerising balance, handling and bangfor-buck, the new Cayman has high expectations to live up to. Luckily, Porsche aren’t exactly known for failing in this regard… As with the Porsche 718 Boxster we reviewed a few months ago, the Cayman is also now part of the 718 family, so you’ll now refer to a Porsche 718 like you’d refer to a 911, adding the Boxster and Cayman monikers to differentiate between the cabrio and coupe versions respectively. The two cars are now far more closely related than the previous Boxster and Caymans were, with practically identical engine, chassis and interior setups and options, with the only major difference being the roof. And though everyone loves a cabrio,

CITY RIDES

once again we’re leaning slightly towards the Cayman in a choice between the two, and this really comes down to the looks. We love the ‘fastback’ shape of the Cayman, with the roofline gently sloping down towards the rear of the car giving the whole package a much more dynamic and athletic vibe. This is helped in no small part to a slightly lower, wider stance and more muscular rear haunches on the new 718s compared to the outgoing models. Perhaps the biggest news with the new 718 family was the demise of the much-loved naturally-aspirated flat-six in favour of turbocharged inline-fours. However, we said it before with the Boxster and we’ll say it again with the Cayman, the new engine is superb, still delivering that distinctive racy Porsche growl (though without the richer timbre of the flat-six), and a furious power delivery that just keeps on giving.

As expected, the 718 Cayman also boasts superb levels of agility and balance, making it a car you can drive the absolute hell out of without getting too out of shape, or worse. You can pretty much choose what you want a corner to look like, turning in hard and lifting off to kick the back end out, or playing it more sensibly with a nice apex line carrying some speed and laying on the power on the exit like a boss. Even amateurs like us felt like champions after a couple of hours in this car, as the level of confidence the Cayman inspires makes you feel safe in exploring the limits of your comfort zone, providing lots of excitement, but never any terror. Our only complaint was the steering, which though nicely weighted, lacked in feeling and feedback from the front wheels, which is something you really want when you’re driving a car with pinpoint precision and agility like the Cayman.

“Even amateurs like us felt like champions after a couple of hours in this car...”

CITY RIDES

However, we’re nitpicking here, desperately looking for at least one fault to balance out what is overwhelmingly a positive review. If you’re looking for a track-day offering, complete with more urgent steering and spine-jarringly stiff suspension, wait for the 718 Cayman GT4 which should be coming along at some point in the near future. But that’s not what the 718 Cayman and Cayman S are all about. They’re daily drivers and weekend road-trippers. They need to be fun, yes, but they also very much need to be comfortable. And few cars offer such high levels of both for this kind of money as the 718 Cayman. Despite the compact dimensions of the Cayman, there’s still plenty of legroom and headspace, and even places to put drinks, junk and so on. The seats are figure-hugging, holding you in place under brisk cornering, and yet remain yielding enough to keep you comfortable. After several hours of driving we had to return to the hotel, as Porsche wanted their car back at some point! We reluctantly handed back the keys feeling as fresh and energised as when we’d taken them. How many cars can do that? ✤ 58

CHEF’S Q&A

Real connoisseurs of all things epicurean will, no doubt, have had their fair share of Thai food. But, we can guarantee that you’ve never tasted anything like what Michelin Star Chef Henrik Yde-Andersen will serve up. This month, he’ll be cooking as Guest Chef in Emirates Palace’s beautiful seafood dining spot; Sayad restaurant. FACT caught up with the innovative Danish chef to learn just how someone with a background in classical French cooking develops a taste and passion for Thai cuisine…

C

hef Henrik Yde-Andersen is the founder and owner of Michelin-starred restaurant Kiin Kiin in Copenhagen (the first Thai restaurant outside of Thailand to receive a Michelin Star) and co-founder and consulting chef of Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin in Bangkok. His culinary journey began as a junior chef, training in traditional French cuisine and working in numerous European countries. Though he’s European by nationality, he was destined to the world of Thai and Asian cuisine. From January 14 to 19, Chef Henrik will be preparing a special menu for guests to indulge at Sayad restaurant in Emirates Palace. We caught up with him ahead of the gastronomy delight…

in Thailand, everything was culinary anarchy, sugar in the main course, salt into the dessert, and the ever present chili in all dishes. It took me months to put down my “French” background and truly try to understand the secret to Thai food.

You are a classically trained French chef. How does this coincide with you cooking Thai cuisine? It was quite a shock to me when I arrived

What was your “ah ha” moment with Thai cuisine that made you fall in love with it? The balance between sour, sweet, spicy and

fact magazine

What inspired you to start cooking Thai food? I was in Thailand on holiday and, on my first night, I went to the beach and had my first go with Thai food. I tried Kai Palo (Five Spice Meat and Egg Stew) from a roadside food stall, which left me speechless. It brought tears to my eyes - that’s how spicy it was - I loved every single bite. I went to the restaurant the following morning and asked to learn a few tricks. Five years passed before I returned to Denmark.

salty was phenomenal, and I realised that I had never tasted real Thai food before, at least not authentically spiced Thai food, so I was so surprised. I was also blown away by the atmosphere in the kitchen. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The chefs were not managed through fear. Instead, it was a nice group of chefs working like a family. I was fed up with the restaurant industry, the long hours, the screaming and yelling and, in Thailand, I found new energy and piece of mind. Was your take on Thai food inspired by any particular region of Thailand? I came to the southern part of Thailand first, and as you know your first love never dies. The variety of seafood there and the Indian sub-continent’s influence on the Thai cuisine creates a very unique flavour profile that I fell in love with and felt compelled to share with others.

CHEF’S Q&A

Thai food is a lot of people’s favourite cuisine, what do you think is its major appeal? Deep and well-rounded flavours strike every single taste bud and leaves diners feeling blessed. It’s not hard to understand why the Thai people seem so calm, charming and content— fantastic, freshly- cooked food with fresh ingredients is everywhere. Our Thai Ambassador in Denmark says that every restaurant should see them self as an ambassador of Thai food, culture, and the Thai people’s gentle ways. Thai cuisine is celebrated for its intense flavour explosions. As a chef, how would you describe that sensation? There is simply no holding back in Thai cuisine, and there is no being reserved with ingredients and flavours as we do in the West. As a Chef with a Nordic background, which everyone knows is characterized by bland flavours and even blander produce, such as cabbage and potatoes, Thai food is nirvana. What was it liking being a Danish chef introducing his deconstructed versions of Thai classics to Thai diners? What has the response been like in Bangkok? To say we were sleepless in Bangkok the first three months would be an understatement. We hurled a culinary bump right in the middle of Bangkok, and those who expected classic Thai dishes were utterly disappointed. We swiftly learned to be much better about explaining our concept, and the respect slowly grew and word of mouth spread. I am so proud today when I see young Thai chef finding inspiration in what we do and our modern spin on Thai cuisine. You refer to your cooking as “Thai-inspired cuisine with a modern twist” - What is Thai and what is modern about it? We serve the dishes one-by-one in a classic Thai way, which is to serve and share all dishes at the same time. I like to control the timing and make sure each dish hits the table when it is cooked perfectly and in the order where it shines most. “Modern” is a just a term we use to liberate ourselves from the norm and to open people’s minds 82

to flavours and textures they might not think possible. The battle against people’s expectations is what we wage most. What’s the story behind your signature dish? Our frozen curry came to be one morning when I had some leftover red curry in the refrigerator from the night before. For a moment, the coolness, sweetness and texture of the coconut milk reminded me of ice cream, and then I decided it needed to be served with lobster, and that is simply how frozen curry was born. What can diners in Abu Dhabi expect to try? I will bring an exact copy of the dishes we do in Denmark and Bangkok, and I hope UAE diners will love it. ✤ GO: Chef Henrik Yde-Andersen will prepare a set menu and a la carte menu items for diners at Sayad restaurant, Emirates Palace. Dine from January 14 to 19 to try his innovative Thai food creations. Call (0)2 690 9000 for reservations and more information.

Tamba Twist: Inspiring Indian Cuisine There isn’t another like it in the city; Tamba Abu Dhabi continues to impress guests with its traditional Indian food that comes with clever innovative elements…

T

amba made a huge impact on the culinary scene in Abu Dhabi last year and it’s not hard to see why; excellent food and smooth service are at the core of this place. The gorgeous Indian-inspired restaurant, on the 6th floor of The Hub at World Trade Centre Mall, introduced us to its sundowner sessions a couple of months ago and we were wowed. So, imagine our excitement when Tamba called to come and see if they’ve still got the “it” factor – we weren’t disappointed. The first thing you notice about the restaurant is the stylish décor and low lighting. The venue represents a skillful juxtaposition of innovation and tradition, with its sleek loft-style interior, floor to ceiling windows, exposed tandoor ovens representing the true roots of Indian cuisine and extensive copper bells dangling elegantly from above. We love the slick bar with its emphasis on bronze, copper and timber, and the large outdoor terrace views over the city. 84

The menu isn’t overwhelming but it offers excellent options with bites, salads, raw, vegetarian and meat (from fish and seafood, to chicken and duck or beef and lamb - they’ve got it all). We love the Watermelon, Rocket and Burrata Salad, which is oh-so-fresh and packed with flavour. Other standouts are the King Crab Puri (to-die-for), Spicy Tuna and Avocado, Seared Salmon with citrus explosion, Bombay Bahji rolls and sweet and sour pumpkin with Spinach Paratha. We love that every dish derives from true Indian eating, but is presented with a Tamba twist of modern cooking methods and outstanding presentation. These liplicking menu items are perfect for sharing with some of the excellent cocktails on offer, especially if you’re looking for some light bites rather than a large meal. When it comes to the main affair we opt for the 48-hour Slow-cooked Lamb Shank in Rogan Sauce which melts in your mouth for total taste bud seduction – exquisite. If you want a curry with a difference opt for the Smoked Chicken topped with some 86

Never has a tastier curry graced our palates – LOVE! All of this was leading up to the megapopular desserts; we, of course, went for The Break-Up and The Bride. FOODIE CORNER

I

t’s not every day you get to dine in a restaurant that leans at 18 degrees. The aptly named venue is on the 18th floor of the 5-star Hyatt Capital Gate, best known for its curved architecture. 18 Degrees is not new on the dining scene, but rather a chic and modern restaurant that continues to stand the test of time. This beautiful venue boasts both indoor and outdoor seating in a spacious setting with slick décor, pulling in the city’s food enthusiasts for dinner and a recently launched Friday Brunch. The restaurant has just changed concept from a super high-end venue to a more relaxed setting with the same impressive quality and service, but now there’s a lovely sharing concept menu. Using simple flavours, 18 Degrees offers specialty dishes inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. The open kitchens add a casual, friendly feel to the restaurant and it’s fun to watch the chefs at work. The new sharing concept reflects the Mediterranean lifestyle, serving high-quality and innovative cuisine in an elegant yet laidback atmosphere. The menu recommends three dishes per person and we start our meal with the Burrata Salad, Calamari Fritti, Ceviche and Prawn dishes. The Burrata Salad is simply divine with the creamy cheese taking centre stage, served with shredded basil and super fresh cherry tomatoes. The Calamari Fritti is equally good with a beautifully crisp texture, served with a spring onion mayonnaise, which compliments the seafood perfectly. The Ceviche is light, incredibly fresh and really tasty; it’s flavoured with lime, chilli, passionfruit and red onion – a one-of-akind ceviche combo that we haven’t tried before and loved every spoonful! The prawns have quickly become a favourite dish for diners and there’s no secret why; they’re submerged in mouthwatering 90

garlic, chilli and parsley – giving your taste buds a real treat. You could easily have a meal with just the tasty sharing options as they stand but since we really love food we order a main each, too. We opt for the Chuletas de Cordero and Seafood Risotto. The

Chuletas de Cordero is a delicious lamb short loin with a generous serving of aioli potato and mint sauce. This dish is so good that we practically begged for the recipe in the hopes of making it the main star of our next dinner party. With its pink centre and flawlessly cooked

foodie corner potatoes, we’d definitely order it again. The Seafood Risotto is also a hit with succulent prawns, clams and scallops in a creamy Arborio rice – just divine. We also accompany our dishes with a mixed green salad and mushrooms with lemon which work nicely as sides. If you can’t resist dessert (and why should you?) go for the Tiramisu and Almond Pear Tart. Two spoons for sharing (if you must) but we highly recommend having one sweet tooth satisfying dish all to yourself – they’re both THAT good. You’ll be wowed by the view from the restaurant when you visit, be it day or night with spectacular vistas over Abu Dhabi city for miles. The staff are also excellent; friendly and knowledgeable without the feeling of the in-your-face stuffy fine dining vibe. Whether you’re looking for an intimate dinner or a larger gathering with lots of options for sharing, the new menu at 18 Degrees is well worth trying and, we’re sure, will become a regular favourite amongst the capital’s true food fans. ✤ GO: Visit 18 Degrees at Hyatt Capital Gate. The Royal Treatment ESPA at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal fast-became a place for head-to-toe rejuvenation and a pamper treat to take some time out. Naturally when relaxation calls, FACT’s Angela Beitz happily answered…

L

ocated at the 5-star Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, the gorgeous ESPA offers super soothing treatments and boasts its own ESPA range of products. The spa has a serene setting like no other in the city; right on the cusp of the Venetian Village and besides a sandy beach and the canal waters. It’s large and luxurious with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The décor consists of muted sand and beige tones, high ceilings and traditional Arabic archways that create a palatial ambiance. I’m booked in for a Hot Stone Massage and an Advanced Skin Radiance Facial. The combo of these two treatments came at the perfect time – in the lead up to the festive season when end-of-year madness had worn out my body and made my skin very tired. 94

I’M seriously impressed with the staff, products and treatments at ESPA – everything flows and is effortless from start to finish. I’m shown to the changing rooms and quickly slip into a plush robe and comfy slippers. I’ve arrived early in order to make the most of my spa experience; half an hour in the steam room and sauna pre-treatment is what my therapist recommended and she was right. It helped me to unwind before the massage and to also sweat out some of the toxins that were resting in my body. We head to a lovely treatment room and the therapist starts with the Hot Stone Massage. This treatment targets right down to the root of the

pain in your muscles, more than an ordinary massage would. It’s the heat from the hot stones that expands your blood vessels which encourages blood flow through the body. The intense heat on my sore and tense muscles was a much welcomed feeling, especially around the shoulders and neck (great for anyone who is hunched over a computer all day). The therapist works hard to release every knot out of the body and once the massage is finished, I’m left feeling refreshed and my muscles feel much lighter, with movement being a joy rather than a nuisance. YES! I was then treated to the Advanced Skin Radiance Facial which uses ESPA’s own brand of products. This facial works to target uneven pigmentation and skin tone and to really breathe life back into a dull complexion. It also helps to refresh tired skin and to leave your appearance bright and glowing. After a soothing double cleanse, the skin is exfoliated with a Clarisonic Brush to remove dead cells. This is followed by a peeling mask, after which the skin is massaged with ESPA’s Optimal Skin Proserum which feels like a dream and soaks into my dry skin, beautifully. Another hydrating mask is then applied and while this is working its magic, the therapist gives us a scalp massage which is the perfect end to an utterly indulgent and satisfying spa experience. My complexion appears visibly boosted and brighter and I’m in love with the natural glow. Job.Well.Done! I’m seriously impressed with the staff, products and treatments at ESPA – everything flows and is effortless from start to finish. The amenities are also wonderful, with a private beach and a plunge pool; both ideal for pre or post treatment relaxation.
