2020: Get Tight and Get Right...
“
Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over.” - Guy Finley
A
whole new decade… who’s ready for 2020? Not only are we in a leap year – there’s something rather fun about that extra day in February, right? – but this is also the year of so many incredible happenings here in the UAE. But before we delve into the Expo 2020 excitement, let’s talk about memes. In the lead up to NYE, our Instagram feeds here at FACT were filled with all kinds of inspirational, motivational and down-right laughable memes, all expressing new life mottos and renewed positive thinking to catapult us all into a better New Year. Personally, I don’t mind these small bites of mantra: “Your Life is Beautiful, Even When it’s Not Perfect” – or how about “Where’s my Oscar For Acting Like Everything is Fine” – and my very favourite that shows Jerry the cartoon mouse relaxing with his feet up and the very straight-to-the-point words “Bad Vibes, Get Off Me” sprawled across the picture. Surely, you’ve double tapped and saved some of these for a future rainy day when you might need a little reminder or boost to breathe and take a moment for yourself. So, in true meme style, we’re setting ourselves up for the best year yet. After plenty of conversations in the office and with friends, we’ve come to realise that a lot of us still haven’t experienced so many of the cool events, cultural sites, hidden nooks, and insta-worthy activities in the UAE. I’ve never been to Hatta, or spent the weekend in a desert resort – two things that are on our list of 20 for 2020 starting on p29. Call it a UAE bucket list, or call it 20 new ideas for a more entertaining year ahead. Let us know if we missed any of your favourite places! The food scene in Abu Dhabi is a continuous whirlwind of innovative concepts and yummy cuisines – our January issue is dedicated to just some of these places. From brunches to ladies' nights, special menus and everything in between, you’ll find all the culinary inspo you need to make sure that 2020 starts off on an epicurean high. The next 12 months are going to be filled with ALL the fun - awards season, competition campaigns, fabulous events and some of the UAE's upcoming feats. We're ready for it! And if you find yourself slipping off into unproductive mode, just open up instagram and find that one meme that speaks to you - even if it is a cartoon mouse. Happy New Year all! ☺

FROM PROVENCE: LA SALLE La Salle, an intimate 42-seat restaurant, opened its doors on NYE 2019 on Saadiyat Island… LOCATED BY THE SHORES of Saadiyat Island and inspired by its cultural district, La Salle accentuates a multi-sensory showcase of Provençal cuisine. An exclusive destination that combines a unique blend of art, striking interiors and shimmering views of Saadiyat Beach – known to be the most beautiful coastline in the UAE. The venue and decor alone set the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. Meaning ‘the room’ in French, fine dining venue La Salle, takes inspiration from the artistic hub surrounding it. With its luxurious yet stripped back interior, the elegant room itself is a piece of art. The combination of old and new, works harmoniously together. Distressed vertical pillars and wood slats are accentuated by a stunning Carrara marble bar, and the antique wall-filling mirrors reflect the stunning panoramic views from outside. The floor-to-ceiling windows allow the afternoon light to flood the room, creating a magical golden hue. When the sun sets and darkness takes over, the room transforms, creating a dramatic, intimate space. The focal point of the room is the striking vintage chandelier, centrally hung over a hand-carved, eight-seater master-chef wooden table, which comes to life at night and plays a pivotal role in the spacious room. The menu is a theatrical voyage through Provençe and its coastal cities, passionately headed by Chef Sergio Cabrera and his acclaimed and highly experienced international Front of House – with team members originating from Europe, America and South Africa. The Argentinian born chef has had stints at Michelin-star restaurants around the world and has been requested on numerous occasions to cook for royalty and famous international guests. Chef Sergio Cabrera has ensured that only the best produce is in his kitchen, from the Arbequina olive oil to the extremely fine 100-Year-Old Balsamic Vinegar and unique Alba White truffles, the authenticity of La Salle’s specially sourced ingredients is 10

showcased in the finished dishes. The menu showcases the very best of Provençal cuisine, full of vibrant colours and rich textures. Signature dishes include a dish that originates from Nice La Pissaladière Niçoise (caramelised onions, black anchovies and olives), La Bouillabaisse de Marseille (seafood broth, monk fish, blue mussel cuttlefish, rock shrimps, garlic crouton, piquillo aioli), 30 day dry aged Wagyu Côte de Boeuf to be shared between two (wild mushrooms, béarnaise sauce, truffle mash), Black Cod (Lyonnaise potatoes, caponata and beurre blanc sauce), Crêpes Suzette (flambéed with Grand Marnier, orange butter, served with cottage cheese ice cream and Bordeaux soaked pears), La Fraise (Champagne marinated strawberries, sherry jelly and lemon sorbet). La Salle’s elegant bar - which is affectionately known as “Le Bar” - is a must for oenophiles and cocktail enthusiasts. ✤

MANDARIN ORIENTAL TAKES OVER THE PALACE Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has signed a contract to manage, and ultimately brand, the iconic Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. The Group will take over management of the property from January 2020. EMIRATES PALACE WILL BE rebranded as a Mandarin Oriental property, following a phased renovation over two years, during which time the hotel will remain open. The work will encompass significant upgrades to guestrooms and recreational amenities, as well as new food and beverage facilities. James Riley, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, said: “This is a unique opportunity to manage one of the most high-profile properties in the Middle East and will be an excellent addition to our portfolio in the region. We look forward to bringing the Group’s exemplary service standards to Abu Dhabi and to introducing the brand to a new audience.” The hotel sits on a 1.3-kilometre private beachfront, featuring 394 guestrooms and suites, 12 restaurants and bars, 40 meeting rooms, a concert grade auditorium and a ballroom that can accommodate up to 2,500 people. Leisure facilities include a marina, two swimming pools, a spa and two fitness centres. “The partnership with Mandarin Oriental represents an important milestone and aims to propel the property’s profile into a new era,” said His Excellency Sultan Dhahi Sultan Al Humairi, Managing Director of Emirates Palace Company (EPCO). “We look forward to a mutually prosperous and fruitful relationship with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.” This will be Mandarin Oriental’s second hotel in the UAE, following the opening of Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai in early 2019. 26

CAMP UNDER THE STARS The UAE desert is full of wonderful places to pitch your tent and gaze the stars. Don’t expect great facilities in many of these spots but do get ready for space and freedom, and for an experience that will give you a real taste of the country’s outdoors. The Rub' al Khali desert is the largest continuous sand desert in the world and lies some 200km southwest of Abu Dhabi and though it might seem quite a trek, it’s well worth the drive. Relatively accessible by 4x4, the whole region is scattered with curved sand dunes and dramatic plunges so if you’re there for a spot of dune bashing (you’d be crazy not to) make sure you’ve got an experienced driver at the wheel. There are plenty of great spots in this desert, dotted with freshwater pools and date plantations; all you have to do is take any road from Liwa oasis or follow the signs for Tal Mireb (Moreeb Hill). If you’re new to this whole desert camping thing then something a little closer to Abu Dhabi like Shwaib would be the perfect choice. This is where you’ll find fairly easy access to hidden campsites where stargazing from the top of a dune will wipe away all your worries. It’s close enough to civilisation that you can get your friends to drop off a Starbucks coffee in the morning, but it’s faraway for you to enjoy and appreciate the stunning scenery. • 20 FOR 2020 BAIT AL GAHWA AT QASR AL HOSN Not only does it take place in the beautiful surroundings of Qasr Al Hosn, this demonstration is one of the most sought after yet low key experiences in Abu Dhabi. Bait Al Gahwa is a cultural experience involving the traditional preparation and presentation of gahwa, Arabic coffee. An in-depth exploration of the staple liquid concoction, Bait Al Gahwa presents each stage of preparing gahwa from roasting, cooling, grounding, to brewing the coffee. Each stage, including the serving phase, has a distinctive technique, traditional tools, and unique etiquette to the UAE. FOSSIL DUNES AL WATHBA Like a derelict desert film setting – in fact, this was the location for the opening scenes of ‘Star Wars: A Force Awakens’ - Al Wathba fossil dunes are formations of wind-swept sand, permeated with calcium carbonate and hence hardened to form distinct, varied and abstract natural desert sculptures. Around a 45-minute drive from Abu Dhabi, the fossil dunes of Al Wathba are one of the Emirates’ best-kept secrets. It is highly recommended to hop in a 4×4 to gain proximity and head over to these mesmerising natural creations. Located beyond Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, on the Abu Dhabi – Al Ain Truck Road, E30 and then south of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. The fossil dunes are approximately 70km southeast of Abu Dhabi. While you should take great care at the dunes in order to not disturb their structures, it is equally great a place to camp and explore the rest of the surrounding desert environment – including Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and some miles along the way, the Emirates National Auto Museum. • Q&A LEWIS HAMILTON
FOR THE WIN:
LEWIS HAMILTON Right before he took to the hot seat and raced his way to first place on the podium, Lewis Hamilton sat down for a quick chat with FACT’s Juan Jimenez to talk Formula 1, driving memories and all the reasons why he loves Abu Dhabi. Hi Lewis! Welcome back to Abu Dhabi. Define the three key elements of what success means to you… Self-belief, determination and work ethic are key to me in what I do. To have that belief that you can get to where you’re going, to believe in your ability and determination like no other; to keep going even when it gets tough and to keep pushing yourself. Work ethic is important too – how you apply yourself to the environment you’re in. Besides conquering the podium here in Abu Dhabi, what else do you enjoy when you visit the country? Have you developed a taste for the desert? Everyone loves the weather! The weather here is incredible at this time of year. I think the way of life here is laid back and I love the desert, I love the sand. The culture is just so different here compared to anywhere else in the world. I wouldn’t say that I’ve indulged much in the local food here but I can say that there’s no other place in the world where you get taken care of as much as you do here. I came here, to Dubai, for the first time in 2006. It was for Christmas with my family, and there weren’t many buildings at the time, but a lot was being built. To see how it’s developed and the hospitality is far greater than anywhere else in the world. You take many pitstops around the world during the Grand Prix season. But when do you get time for a pit stop for yourself, to relax and reflect? Mostly around December at Christmas time is when I usually get the biggest pause. The most time to really sit. For me, I’m always on the go and even if I sit down and relax for a minute, I’m still going – my mind is still going. So, it takes some days before I really release and relax and the festive time is generally when I get to do this. Even mid-season, I don’t really take a moment to sit back and relax – whether that’s a good thing or not – I can’t really say. I’m sure it’s not a good thing because it’s important that you take some time for yourself more often. I just find that once I’m in it, I just stay in it – work wise. Because what happens if you can’t get back into it? Let’s take it back… do you remember the very first time that you got behind the wheel of a car? I barely remember what happened last week (laughs). I remember the first time I drove a car around the track. It was an SLK in Bedford Autodrome in the UK, and my dad was in the passenger seat. I remember, as a kid, my dad would often put me on his lap and we would steer the car around – just around the car park or somewhere small. I was always with a wheel, even to the point when I was in a pram – I was always holding a wheel! I feel like I was always destined to have a steering wheel in my hands. That first time I drove with my dad around the track, they had these breaking markers that they put on for suggestions and I 48

was always going way past the breaking points – and I would see my dad holding on for dear life – he would see us pass the breaking mark and he would say “are you going to break”. I think he was shocked at how well I could handle a car. It was no surprise to me because that’s my comfort zone! ✤

resh and vibrant, Voco Dubai is an IHG hotel that introduces guests to another side of the hospitality giant. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, taking prime position close to a number of tourist hotspots including the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall just a short drive away. From the moment we step through its doors, Voco exudes a sense of effortless comfort and convenience. On first impressions we find the staff at Voco to be warm and welcoming. We’re quickly taken up to the lounge for a private check-in, as is customary for all suite guests. We’re given a couple of packs with locallymade dates as a welcome – a sweet gesture that brings in a sense of place for guests in the yummiest way. Checkin is quick and simple, and we’re issued a key in mere minutes – efficiency is definitely at the forefront here.
BEST NIGHT’S SLEEP
What makes the accommodation at Voco Dubai stand out is all the little playful touches and thoughtful details. All of the 471 guestrooms have been recently refurbished with modern décor and considerate extras that make for a comfortable stay. The one-bedroom suite is designed with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the hotel’s location in the heart of the city. Sweeping views over Dubai are a fabulous sight especially at sunset. The suite is all about space. Divided into two separate parts, what we really love is the number of different nooks that you can settle into. Whether you’re here on business, leaisure, or a personal staycation, there is ample space to spread out. A huge and very cosy chaise longue is the exact place to curl up with a hot cuppa and Netflix, whilst a practical workspace makes for the ideal spot to check emails and get a little bit of work done. Enjoy a deep soak in the sunken bath tub, surrounded by an invigorating aerated shower accompanied by Aveda amenities, right before you hit the couch and put your feet up with room service and a film on the large-screen smart TV to chill in front of. Now, we’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels, but never have we experienced the most restful night’s sleep as we did at Voco Dubai. The super comfy new beds are covered in crisp white linens, perfectly plumped duvets and pillows that guarantee (and we can vouch for this) a refreshing night’s sleep. There’s even a walk-in wardrobe with plenty of room for several outfits if you’re heading for a night out in the city! The elegant suite with its lounge vibe is perfect for couples, small families and groups of friends. Choose your favourite outfit from the walk-in wardrobe before heading for a night out in the city that never sleeps.

Celsius Restaurant is the hotel’s all-day dining joint, showcasing the finest and freshest cuisine and friendly service. The bistro style set up is perfect for a leisurely meal. The renowned international buffet, features seasonal European cuisine, highlighted with Middle Eastern culinary touches and the chef’s signature dishes. Breakfast is a must with a range of dishes to kickstart you day the right way. If you’re a club or suite guest, you’ll have access to the Club Lounge. The bustle of the city slips away, replaced by an atmosphere of comfy sophistication and unsurpassed service. The perfect balance of warmth and serenity, the Club Lounge is a private base for business and a space for pleasure. he interior of The Westin City Centre Bahrain is sumptuous and modern with lavish crushed velvet fabrics adorning cushions and an array of carefully crafted furniture. Throughout the hotel different levels and styles of illumination create an air of extravagance in the entertaining spaces and tranquillity and intimacy in the lounge areas. The décor is a clever blend of polished woods, tiles, panelling and ornate chandeliers. The cutting-edge contemporary design is executed perfectly to create a sense of luxuriant escapism. This sense of splendour struck us immediately as our car was whisked away by valet. We entered and were offered a refreshingly fruity trio of welcome drinks which resembled a heavenly elixir to kick start our staycation experience. The hotel takes a holistic, bespoke approach towards guests’ wellbeing which was evident as we checked in smoothly and sashayed to our Executive Room. The platter of treats presented to us reflected the attention to detail and personal knowledge of every guest. Chocolates of all kinds satisfy our sweet tooth! The in-room amenities ensure that no two stays are alike but are customised to indulge the cravings, style and eccentricities of guests from arrival to departure. Generously designed, the room features modern furnishings, rich textures and subtle hues and is available with twin or king size beds. Promising a high degree of subtle sophistication, the rooms here are a perfect retreat for the business or leisure traveller. Warm colour schemes and understated decorative accents help soothe mind, body and soul. The highlight of any visit to The Westin is the Heavenly Bed which has a reputation that truly proceeds it. Aside from this, the ambient lighting, crisp tiled edges in the heavenly bathroom and thoughtfully selected accessories from the signature White Tea range are designed to create a sense of mindfulness and bodhi whilst ensuring that all necessary links with the outside world are at hand should you require them. The team at The Westin make a conscious effort to create a home away from home. Our reluctance to leave such a haven drew us to ordering room service for dinner – and what a meal it was. The Beef Bresaola was thin juicy slices of meat, topped with fresh salad faves like tomato, lettuce and arugula. Delicious! The Tom Yum soup was one of the best we’ve tasted in a long time, with no skimping on the prawns. Whilst the seafood mixed grill was a smoky, tender affair that we couldn’t get enough of. All of the menus at The Westin are filled with superfoods which creates vitality and wellbeing through their philosophy of food synergy – pairing certain foods to increase their health-giving benefits. estled amongst the exotic Kaafu Atoll and Embood Hoo Lagoon, taking pride of place on a remote island, lays a multi-island leisure and entertainment project, Crossroads Maldives. Accessible in just 15 minutes by speedboat from Velna International Airport in Malé, the destination boasts not one but two incredible resorts that provide travellers with individuality and excitement. HARD ROCK HOTEL MALDIVES First up, we check into the stunning Hard Rock Hotel for two nights. Our expectations were high as the brand carries such a strong reputation all over the world, and it’s safe to say that every expectation was exceeded. Stepping off the speedboat, we received a very warm welcome by the Hard Rock team. Refreshing drinks and relaxed backdrops set the tone for our mini break. Hard Rock Hotel focuses on the little things, so you can be sure of a memorable and unique stay. Inspired by local culture, tropical architecture is infused with contemporary design features. Our favourite touch is the tailoring that can be done to suit every guest’s musical tastes. You can enjoy exclusive brand offerings and amenities including The Sound of Stay music programme, offering complimentary use of Fender guitars and amps, and Crosely record players for in-room jam sessions. It’s no surprise that there is a big focus on music here. After all, the brand is known for its oneof-a-kind blend of music, entertainment, iconic merchandise and authentic, American fare. Of course, accommodation is subtle but stunning. We stay in a gorgeous beach villa, which offers modern decor with breath-taking beach views. Each of the beach villas comes with its own private butler and 24-hour hotel services – adding a real sense of escape and luxury to the stay. Outside of the villa there is plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool at the front of the property, state-of-the-art fitness centre and the signature Rock Spa. Our days were planned perfectly with a mixture of both relaxing on sandy beaches, spa time and fitness and self-defence classes. Our favourite, however, was the music-infused yoga programme, aptly named Rock Om. It’s everything a yogi and a music-lover will appreciate – and if you’re into both then this is one activity that should be high up on your list of things to do here. The Rock Spa offered an extensive menu of treatments and massages to suit every wellbeing wish. We opted for the signature deluxe massage in the Rock Spa. Traditional techniques are

Focus is placed on the reflexology points on the face, scalp and feet to help rebalance energy and deliver you with a renewed state of mind. It’s exactly what you need in the Maldives and was easily one of the highlights of the trip. The evenings at Hard Rock Hotel are certainly memorable; sunset drinks followed by delicious seafood and grilled meat bbq, and live music on the beach. We’d highly recommend taking a buggy or a short cycle to the iconic Hard Rock Cafè for more live entertainment. The stateof-the-art Café highlights Hard Rock’s new design style and latest technology. The vibrant Cafe features bright, eclectically designed interiors, offering 225 colourful seats and 13 pieces of iconic memorabilia that shines the spotlight on icons such as The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Imagine Dragons, along with other legendary artists. Hard Rock Cafe Maldives also features a unique chandelier comprised of 600 glass bottles, displayed above the bar. It’s truly a sight for sore eyes and we couldn’t stop instagramming it! The Maldives’ Cafe’s Rock Shop also offers musicinspired items as well as collectible Hard Rock Cafe merchandise. Fans can acquire exclusive Maldivesspecific merchandise and much-coveted signature pins at this retail location. It’s worth visiting alone just for this if you’re a devoted Hard Rock admirer. The hotel is packed with show stopping, family-friendly activities to suit all age groups. There’s even a very cool Hard Rock Roxity Kid's Club especially designed to keep younger guests entertained. Carefully-curated using simple geometrical shapes and natural materials, Bang & Olufsen has created a meaningful product that integrates beautifully into the home. Ensuring an optimum listening experience, Beosound Stage comes with eleven speaker drivers, each driven by its own 50watt amplifier, resulting in a 3-channel, fully active, DSP-based loudspeaker that satisfies even the most discerning listener. The soundbar comes equipped with woofers that cover a greater portion of the lower frequency range, in order to deliver a rich and superbly deep bass. The centre channel drivers include four of those 4-inch woofers, which are designed to reduce distortion and allow greater movement, which provides an improved bass performance. Dolby Atmos, the latest evolution in multichannel audio, works by heightening the soundstage, giving the audio a
three-dimensional effect. Apart from some amazing sound quality, the Beosound Stage also comes with different listening modes, which are optimized for the material you are listening to. You can take your pick from five different listening modes including TV, Music, Movie, Night Listening or None. After selecting the listening mode, you can then fine-tune the sound precisely to your taste using ToneTouch, Bang & Olufsen’s playful and intuitive equalizer that allows you to feel your way through the sound settings and find the one that best suits the situation. The Bang & Olufsen soundbar can be used as a perfect companion to the TV, or as a music system in its own right. The gadget is compatible with the leading streaming technologies including Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth, which can be used when the TV is inactive, offering multi-room functionality. Offering ease of use and maximum performance with a gorgeous display, the Bang & Olfusen Beosound Stage is the perfect way to upgrade from your TV’s built-in speakers. ✤

PREMIUM POWER:
MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS CLUBMAN The British premium car manufacturer MINI presents what is by some measure one of the most powerful models ever approved for public road use in the brand’s 60-year history. FACT takes the brand-new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman out on the UAE roads to put the vehicle through its paces…

C
elebrating 60 years of car production, 2019 was a noteworthy year for MINI; six decades of manufacturing youthful, energetic cars for nostalgia-enthused car buyers across the world. If we look back at the original MINI, the car was designed to bring compact car transportation to the masses. Now, the current iteration of the iconic British make is more of a niche brand that caters to particular tastes in terms of design, comfort, and functioning. And while MINI’s 21st century models may not be for everyone, performance remains key and plays a vital role in the brand's success story. That is no exception for their latest offering. The MINI John Cooper Works Clubman is dubbed the most powerful ever, but does its 306 hp 4-cylinder turbo engine produce the thrills you might expect from driving a worthy contender in the compact premium segment? The Clubman’s extraordinarily powerful engine is combined as standard with a new 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, including mechanical differential lock on the front axle, an ALL4 all-wheel drive system, a specifically engineered chassis, and additional reinforcement modifications for the body structure, engine connection and chassis fastenings. This enables the John Cooper Works racing sensation to attain a completely new dimension of performance – and where better than the UAE roads to put this to the test? The Clubman generates a maximum torque of 450 Nm in the broad engine speed range between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm, which is around 28 per cent higher than that of the previous engine. The maximum output of the new 4-cylinder engine has been increased by approximately 32 per cent. The resulting pulling

power, according to MINI, enables the new engine of the Clubman to produce an acceleration performance of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds - more than a second quicker than the old model. If you’re a regular on the highways between the Emirates, the Clubman ensures an impressive level of elasticity during spontaneous speed bursts – smoothly picking up speed and sprinting you forward powerfully and gracefully. For the first time with MINI vehicles, the maximum speed of the new top sports performer is now electronically limited to 250 km/h. A bigger turbocharger helps achieve the extra output, and further changes to the 2.0-litre engine encompass the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, main bearing, and fuel injectors. The engine cooling system has been enhanced and the transmission has its own oil cooler. The more powerful turbo 4-cylinder exhales through a redesigned Sport exhaust system. As before, MINI's ALL4 all-wheel drive is standard, although components have been beefed up to handle the additional torque. So, too, have the brakes, which now include 4-piston fixed-caliper disc brakes on the rear wheels to ensure constantly high braking values even under intensive use. The large brake discs of 360 × 30 millimetres at the front and 330 × 20 millimetres at the rear combined with optimised coolant duct geometry also play their part in achieving the high level of stability. The red-coated brake calipers at the front bear the John Cooper Works logo – adding a detailed touch for MINI enthusiasts. After multiple trips between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we find that the additional horsepower is welcomed and having the ALL4 allwheel drive system does a great job in getting the power down to the tarmac without inducing torque steer. is the flat cornering stance of the Clubman, it remains true to MINI's goal of making its vehicles handle like go-karts. In this case, a go-kart with 300 horses and a smooth shifting 8-speed dual clutch automatic. Progressing up into Sport and Sport+ modes, the biggest difference you feel is in the quickness of the throttle response and greater feedback from the steering. The Clubman is so utterly composed, that there was little to feel in the way of decreased body roll or higher suspension firmness from the sportier drive modes. The Clubman tackles both long empty roads and swift corners with reassuring confidence, which thanks to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), is able to calculate and apportion power to the front and rear wheels as required to ensure maximum dynamic ability in relation to the driving situation. Furthermore, the steering is communicative and the car's front-end bites into turns with precision. It feels suave and spirited, just like a MINI should feel. If power is a secondary notion for you, the body on the Clubman will be sure to impress. The Clubman has a sleeker look and a lower ride height, diverging from its hardtop and convertible JCW siblings. And we quite like that. The aesthetic changes to the Clubman are subtle. A keen eye would notice the newly-designed grille flanked by revised LED Matrix headlights as well as the unique Union Jack taillight design, which are the key identifiers 74

here. Exterior colours, mirror cap choices, wheel designs, exterior trim packs and interior trim and leather options have also been revised and expanded to meet the needs of potential buyers. The long wheelbase, large track width and low centre of gravity displayed is ideal for a chassis design and tuning aimed at consistent sports performance. In addition, the systematic reinforcement of the body structure and extremely taut chassis connections in the new Clubman ensure maximum driving precision. The overall package put together by the John Cooper Works with its sheer dynamics, agility and precision, is completed by model-specific design features in the exterior, which serve to optimise the vehicles’ aerodynamic features and air duct design. The large air inlets on the front of the vehicle are designed to serve the cooling requirements of both the drive and the brake system. In addition, the outstanding performance characteristics are reflected in the model-specific design of the side skirts and the independent rear aprons with integrated diffuser elements. Model-specific roof spoilers play a role in reducing uplift at high travel speeds. Furthermore, the Clubman is equipped with aerodynamically optimised mirror caps. Aesthetically, the Clubman is a beauty. Accentuations in the contrast paintwork and the mirror caps, an individual design for the side scuttles by the additional indicators, and the John Cooper Works logo in the radiator grille and tailgate – are all design elements that have been integrated into the vehicle in a most tasteful way. A red crossmember subdivides the newly designed radiator grille of the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. Its headlamps, rear lights and rear apron also display the new design of the latest model revision for the MINI Clubman. The characteristic interior sports car flair is partly down to the John Cooper Works sports seats with integrated head rests, the John Cooper Works sport steering wheel with multifunction buttons, the John Cooper Works selector lever, and the anthracite headliner. The exclusive standard equipment of the top sports model in the MINI range also includes LED headlamps, keyless ride, the Radio MINI Visual Boost including 6.5 inch display with touchscreen function and a redesigned graphical display. The integrated Connected Media equipment is able to access numerous MINI Connected online services. Alternatively, there is also a choice of special equipment options, including Connected Navigation, with its easy-to-use routing function and additional infotainment options, as well as Connected Navigation Plus with an 8.8 inch touch display. In conjunction with these options, the Real Time Traffic Information service is also available, providing real-time data on the current traffic situation, a personal Concierge service and the MINI Online Internet portal, and it is also Apple CarPlay-ready. In addition, navigation map updates are automatically downloaded to the vehicle via the mobile network connection. Basically, the Clubman is HOOKED up when it comes to keeping you in-the-know about road and traffic conditions, and making sure that your favourite playlist of podcast is right on hand to save the day. The Clubman is fast – thanks to its extraordinary engine. The subtle drama with the refined and clear competency is a remarkable feat for MINI. It’s not as loud and rebellious as some of its brethren but it’s most certainly on the verge of slightly unhinged and unashamedly sporty. For staying true to its roots, the Clubman is dynamic, charming, very impressive, and full of surprises. ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh HELLO 2020 I pledge an unwritten oath to give up fast food and solemnly promise to join the gym and continue to attend even after January. It’s a new era, a fresh start, a beacon of hope and the time to be a little over ambitious when it comes to making New Year’s resolutions, a favorite pastime to self-reflect and get those pending dreams kicking, but are we really putting the plan into motion? I don’t mean to burst any bubbles but I’m here to remind myself, and you, that if there were plans in 2019 that failed or not even started yet – IT IS OKAY! What are you letting go of or welcoming in 2020? We all think of signing up at the gym, starting a new hobby or simply having a new outlook towards certain things in life but then we loose interest for some vague reason which brings me to my 2020 New Year’s resolution – Patience. People would keep to their long-term goals whether they receive an immediate reward which is why interest is thrown out of the window so soon. Let’s take that gym membership as an example – everyone swears they’re going to the gym for the health of their future self, but if they’re not enjoying it in the moment or seeing quick results, they tend to drop out as delayed gratification just wasn’t much of a motivator. And this applies to anything you have in mind, whether your goal is being more sustainable or wanting to start a blog, you need patience. So instead of curating a list of endless resolutions, keep the year’s promises small and specific. Opt for monthly resolutions and you’re much likely to stick to them and hopefully achieve them. Happy New Year all!
Yours fashionably, Amal 84

R
unning from 12.30pm to 8pm, diners can choose any three-hour slot to visit the All Day Brunch, during which a refined menu of delicious food is served to the table. Oh hello, we’ve been waiting for a concept like this! The sharing-style plates allow for more indulgence and interaction with family and friends, and the atmosphere equally matches the relaxed feels. Alba Terrace draws inspiration from Provence, reminiscent of the Mediterranean with its warm tones and romantic aesthetics accentuated by lanterns, candles, plants and a design that wouldn’t be out of place in any charming Southern European country. During the day, your experience is made livelier with music whilst in the evening (we took our seats at 5pm) the surroundings are illuminated with a sunset backdrop and mood lighting to set a more intimate yet inviting scene. We decide to sit outside and really make the most of the winter weather – they even have the cosiest pashmina shawls for you to sink under if you get chilly. The staff are friendly and attentive from the get-go, making sure that our glasses are kept full and the pacing between each course is perfectly-timed. Prepare to feast as the brunch boasts select dishes created by the youngest ever British two-starred Michelin Chef, Tom Aikens. A complimentary glass of bubbly is offered to guests as a welcome drink and the fluffiest focaccia bread is brought to the table with a side of olive oil and salt flakes – just what our carb dreams are made of. We’re informed that the daytime menu differs from the after-dusk dishes and upon viewing both, we’re more than happy with the selection on offer for the evening. For starters, we’re spoiled with the Signature Charcuterie Board, topped with smoked duck breast, beef coppa, truffle salami, and wagyu chorizo with a side of sour apple chutney, grape chutney and celeriac remoulade. Now, despite the elegant reputation that accompanies this French-derived platter, charcuterie actually has its origins as a humble peasant dish. But don't let the simplicity of the preparation deceive you – here, the successful charcuterie board is curated and composed with a thoughtful arrangement of textures and tastes. We top up the crispy bread with a chosen piece of meat and lather it in chutney – exquisite. The Burrata Cheese Trolley is another delight with a plate of eight-year aged balsamic vinegar, tomatoes and assorted condiments. It’s creamy and flavourful, just as any good burrata should be. The refreshing Mint and Cucumber Salad is the perfect accompaniment and packed with all of our favourite ingredients; feta, peas, broad beans and quinoa, whilst the Tuna Tartar is a starter that we scoop up with gusto and finish in record time. A very impressive beginning. Next, mains are chosen to please every palate and cater to a variety of dietary requirements. The Prawns Risotto with courgette and pistachio is an instant hit at the table. What we adore the most is the amount of juicy prawns added into the dish – unlike some places we’ve tried, there was no skimping on the good stuff at Alba Terrace. The Truffle Pizza was, hands down, the most-talked about plate at the table. Not only was the truffle aroma enticing our taste buds but the dough itself was divine. Topped with ricotta, mozzarella, button onions and 88

baby spinach, you’ll be diving in for more, just as we did with the constant “one more slice” approach! The Chicken Paillard with violet artichoke salad and parmesan is the type of dish that you want to be able to cook for your friends when inviting them around for dinner. It’s delicious and homely, and sure to please anyone with a poultry preference. Dessert was a whole different game. This is when you’ll want to whip out your phones and take a pic for the ‘gram (I mean, if it’s not on Instagram, did it even happen?). The Petit Sugared Brioche Bun steals the show with its raspberry crème mousseline filling, followed by the Coffee Overdose with coffee panna cotta, espresso ice cream and mocha foam – a real live wire way to end your meal. We were all utterly mesmerised by the creamy texture and intense flavours of the chocolate ice cream and the mango sorbet – U.N.R.E.A.L. Sharing-style brunches might not be everyone’s cup of tea, however, when done with consistent service and a high standard of quality ingredients, there’s nothing better than lounging on comfy chairs, catching up with your nearest and dearest whilst the food and drinks are well taken care of. Portion sizes are generous and you can request more of any one dish if you just can’t get enough. The All Day Brunch is another fine dining example at The Abu Dhabi EDITION Hotel of how successful a concept can be when it’s kept simple and gimmick-free. ✤

S
ituated on the third floor of the hotel close to the spa and fitness centre, Azura is accessed via a series of stairways that leads visitors past the shimmering waters of the hotel swimming pool and up onto a small terrace that offers some of the finest views in the capital. Thanks to a prominent corniche location, Azura is a great choice for impressing out of town guests with sweeping views taking in Emirates Palace, Marina Mall and a long sandy swathe of the corniche beach. We’d suggest an early reservation to catch the sunset over the Arabian Gulf and watch the city light up as day turns to night. Much of Azura’s charm comes from the compact nature of the venue which provides diners with an intimacy and a sense of exclusivity that is not found at many locations in Abu Dhabi. Sat beneath a canopy with the sea breeze on your face is certainly enjoyable and with comfortable seating and a varied bar menu, guests are encouraged to linger and enjoy the surroundings. This unhurried approach is refreshing and extends to the service-style which is amiable and comfortable with good recommendations for both food and beverages shared with assured confidence by the team on the floor. It’s been at least a year since we last visited and we’re excited by the new menu which sticks with the Mediterranean concept while offering a selection of exciting new dishes. The Azura signature table grills are a popular choice on the evening we dine, with the buckets of either meat or seafood served to the table amidst billows of smoke in an enticing show of dinner theatrics. These are certainly meant for sharing and we mark these down in memory for a future visit. Azura’s menu has wisely been kept short and succinct allowing the culinary team to focus on a smaller number of dishes executed to perfection. Expect a couple of soups (lentil or seafood gumbo) amongst the six additional appetisers. There’s something for everyone with mussels, king crab and baked oysters all represented. We, however, select the octopus carpaccio (AED105) which presents thin slices of octopus tendril with peach cubes, confit potato and a sweet tamarind dressing, the resulting plate is a flavour sensation and one that should not be missed. A salad of kale and berries (AED65) also impresses with a generous mix of strawberries, blackberries and grapes served amidst charred corn and almond, yet its the tropical mix of passion fruit dressing and pomelo that brings an unprecedented freshness to the plate. Being Mediterranean inspired, the main courses are mainly centred around seafood with whole rainbow trout or mahi mahi making for appealing

choices. The black cod with miso (AED160) is executed well and offers an extremely tender piece of fish enhanced by an Asian dressing that boasts an unexpected fiery kick. For the carnivores amongst us, look no further than the short rib burger (AED165) which is not only visually impressive but a gigantic portion. A slow-cooked USDA short rib takes pride of place on the bone, sandwiched between a light bun and covered in Taleggio cheese. Slide the bone out and your left with a flavoursome piece of meat that cannot be contained by the burger buns, so we would highly recommend eating this one with a knife and fork. Desserts feature a rose and raspberry pavlova (AED65), a blueberry creme brulee (AED65) and our personal preference, the Galaktoboureko (AED65). The Greek dessert may be difficult to pronounce but is well worth the effort, for the reward is a semolina custard topped with a crisp filo crust that is as alluring as it is addictive. I
t’s not often that a busy-body like me gets the chance to completely shut off for a little while and get taken care of – but it sure feels like just what the doctor ordered. Heavenly Spa is to be the self-prescribed remedy. I’m greeted with a cup of cold hibiscus tea and a hot towel, great to warm up on Abu Dhabi’s chilly days. After filling in the treatment form, I head straight to the women’s changing area which houses a steam room and sauna as well as showers, lockers, and a comfortable changing area, with direct access to the treatment room area. The spa is a small and charming area made up of six treatment rooms. There is an earthy atmosphere of nature translating from outside to the inside, using impressive interiors like refined, natural materials of stone, water and wood, paired with sleek and smooth finishes of glass tiles and polished surfaces. The overall ambience is soft, warm and welcoming – just the respite needed for a quiet and relaxing time at the spa. Tip: arrive early so that you can make use of the facilities pre-treatment – after all, if you’re not using the sauna and steam room beforehand, are you even doing the whole spa thing right? A soft robe is provided for maximum comfort and privacy. As someone who regularly works out, I opted for the Westin Workout Massage – a 60-minute treatment that encompasses many different techniques from deep tissue to sports massage to Thai massage. It targets the muscles specifically to melt away pain, tension and inflexibility. The treatment begins with a casual chat as my therapist enquires for any areas of concern that need more attention – as usual, I point out the upper shoulders and back as well as the legs (blame it on the body pump classes!). She informs me that the massage will include gentle yet effective stretches for maximum impact. Requesting medium to firm pressure, I sink into the comfy spa bed and quickly stumble into a short snooze. What is most evident in this massage is that no muscle is left behind… every part of the body that you work on at the gym is given a chance to ease with long, much-needed stretches and target-specific techniques using the palms of the hand and even the elbows. Regular gym-goers will love it. I hit full slumber when a heated compress is placed over my back, inviting the muscles to further unravel and relax. Interestingly, the massage techniques during this treatment will leave you feeling physically rested yet mentally uplifted. Next up, I’m trying a treatment that for many has become life-changing. The 30-minute Elemis Targeted Toning Tightener. This is a powerful blend of massage and detoxification clay for targeted toning and tightening on hips, thighs, abdomen and back of the arm. Clinically proven to reduce appearance of cellulite after one treatment – I was intrigued to see if a technology-free treatment could work the wonders that it claims to. I choose the thigh area to be focused on and I’m warned that it’s “not the most comfortable” treatment – which piques my interest further. My therapist is an absolute pro – using tactical brush strokes to prep the skin. Nigari salt deeply cleanses, followed by a targeted sculpting massage to kick-start the micro-circulation, promoting a smoother silhouette and invigorating the body. A cooling rubberised mask, rich in super-detoxing caffeine and green clay is applied to the problem area, whilst clinically proven Red Algae redefines areas prone to sagging. The result is a body airbrush and skin that looks and feels intensely toned and refreshed. My instant feeling is one of seeing more of a desired shape of the thighs – they look toned and shapely, whilst the effects of lymphatic circulation are also visible in my need to visit the bathroom multiple times over the next few hours. Of course, a continuous repeat of the treatment – around twice a month – would definitely show greater results. Afterwards I was ushered to the relaxation lounge and told to take my time. Why is this important? Well, you might be all too familiar with the feeling of being rushed to get ready and leave a spa once your treatment is complete – something akin to being on a conveyor belt – but the good news is, at Heavenly Spa, you can sit back for as long as you like, enjoying healthy snacks and a cup of ginger and honey tea. Heavenly? I think so. ✤

What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Abu Dhabi and why? Abu Dhabi is a vibrant city bursting with culture and heritage. For a cultural morning, I recommend visiting Louvre Abu Dhabi that gleams with stunning architecture and provides direct access to firstclass art and an interesting insight into cultural diversity. As the sun sets, I advocate a stopover at the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Featuring marvellous interior design, it never fails to astonish visitors. Interestingly, our hotel was heavily influenced by the mosque and guests may notice that the acanthus flowers that decorate the mosque’s interiors adorn as well our resort’s own marble design. For unsurpassed views of the mosque, visit our property, particularly during the evening hours when the mosque illuminates beautifully as an icon over the sky.
Share with us some of your professional goals with the hotel for 2020.... I look forward to a successful year strengthening The Ritz-Carlton legacy in Abu Dhabi and fostering a culture of excellence at our property, all whilst maximizing financial performance and retaining profit leadership. We will reinforce our brand promise and create indelible memories for our guests through genuine care and unparalleled service. It is these unique and personalized experiences that bring our guests back. We will also inspire, energise and develop our Ladies and Gentlemen that are the heart of our operations.
