Summertime Fine
“
Smell the sea, and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly." - Van Morrison
I
t’s my sixth summer here in the Gulf and, let me get straight to the facts: it doesn’t get easier to handle the heat. There’s nothing like the scorchin’ sun and dry heat of a UAE summer, where the a/c is your best friend and you could easily consume a year’s worth of your favourite Baskin Robbins flavoured ice cream in a matter of days (side confession: I’ve never been to Baskin Robbins so it’s probably a Pinkberry summer for me). Regardless, if you’re not travelling during the summer months, the Gulf can become a challenging place to be. That is, of course, until we tell you why summer in Abu Dhabi could actually be a blessing in disguise. Aside from the fact that school’s out and traffic is basically non-existent (yay!), there are so many amazing deals to take advantage of courtesy of the local hospitality scene. Turn to p23 and get ready to be wowed by the best in the game as they bring you pocket-friendly rates and offers with all the extra-added benefits. From staycations to foodie fixes and the best rooms and suites in town to check yourself into, you can make summer less about boredom and more about getting that insta-worthy shot to showcase the Capital and those all-important "do not disturb" moments! To top that off, the city's arts and culture is really stepping up this summer with excellent exhibitions and showcases taking place at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Warehouse421 - we've got all the info in our Listen Up pages! And if you REALLY do want to get away but not too far from home, we’ve got just the choice of places you're looking for. Starting p46, read all about what makes the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal as special as ever before; and why a staycation at the beautiful Abu Dhabi Edition will make your summer a memorable one; or maybe you want the enticing shores of The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort? Three fabulous choices to add some luxury and relaxation to your summer! As always, food is our main bae this month and Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene forever impresses us. We’ve got new menu items and classic faves from some of our favourite spots in town: revolving success at Stratos in Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi (p81); dietary requirements are satisfied at Hakkasan Abu Dhabi (p85); and BarFly by Buddha Bar proves its worth on p89. Staying summertime fine on your own terms is the best way to make it through the Gulf heat. Mine will be filled with family, friends, sun, sand, and sea… what are your plans going to be? Until September, live your best life, friends… ☺

CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS A formative new exhibition that explores the commonalities in unrelated family photographs from across the globe is set to open at Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi’s home-grown arts and design centre. Lest We Forget: The Universality of Family Photographs opened on June 12 will run until July 28. CURATED BY THE GRASSROOTS arts and heritage initiative Lest We Forget, in collaboration with Spanish artist María José Rodríguez Escolar, the collection brings together disparate photographs taken by unrelated families living worlds apart —in the UAE and Spain—during the final decades of the 20th century. Viewed side by side, an unexpected synergy springs forth, revealing commonalities that resonate deeply in the diverse family photographs. Faisal Al Hassan, Manager at Warehouse421 said: “We are proud of our continuous collaboration with the Lest We Forget team on what will be a captivating exploration into our region’s history and the humanity that unites us. This sentiment fits seamlessly with Warehouse421’s own values and we look forward to engaging our community in the UAE’s storied past told through pictorial form.” By showing the heritage of the UAE in an international context, the exhibition and book underpins Warehouse421’s ambition to drive locally-relevant narratives through thought-provoking works, and using it to bridge the UAE to the rest of the world. Dr. Michele Bambling, Creative Director of Lest We Forget, said: “Family photographs express interest in, and affection for, the people, places, activities and moments that are closest and dear. Those who took the photographs, appeared in the photographs, kept the photographs and viewed the photographs represent circles of human connectivity. “In the context of this exhibition and book, these family photographs have been removed from the privacy of their albums and displayed publicly, in juxtaposition, to reveal commonalities of human experience, thought and feeling,” she continued. “In the intimacy of the photographs we recognise similitudes between different people and cultures – a fitting tribute to the UAE’s Year of Tolerance.” 14
fact magazine
The Year of Tolerance in the UAE also coincides with the fifth anniversary since the establishment of Lest We Forget under the auspices of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. Over the past several years the initiative has worked tirelessly to create a robust series of exhibitions and books that delve into salient aspects of Emirati cultural identity. In 2015/6, it staged the seminal exhibition, Lest We Forget: Emirati Family Photographs 1950-1999 at Warehouse421, a living archive of amateur photographs and films taken by Emirati citizens at a time when film reached the mass market and ends when digital cameras replaced analog technology. The collection showed life and social history in the UAE from an unprecedented viewpoint, and it was this artist-book that caught the attention of Spanish artist María José Rodríguez Escolar, who noticed the resemblance of those to her own family photo albums. ✤

SIR BANI YAS CHURCH AND MONASTERY The first Christian site discovered in the UAE is unveiled following the implementation of new conservation measures. THE CHURCH AND MONASTERY on Sir Bani Yas Island, the first Christian site discovered in the UAE, has reopened its doors to visitors following the implementation of conservation measures and site enhancements by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). The Sir Bani Yas Church and Monastery dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries CE. It continued flourish well after Islam spread throughout the region. The excavation of the site took place in several stages, starting with the discovery of the buildings in 1992. Later digs that unveiled the eastern and northern quarters, the surrounding wall, and courtyard houses provided an outline of the site plan which, along with plaster crosses unearthed in 1994, proved the existence of a church. Artefacts found at the site show how the inhabitants of the settlement used the sea, in addition to cattle, sheep and goats, as food sources, while glass and ceramic objects indicate that they traded widely across the Arabian Gulf. The inauguration ceremony for the site was conducted by HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Cabinet Member, Minister of Tolerance, with the opening event attended by HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi and HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, as 16

well as conservators, archaeologists, heritage experts, media professionals and clerics. “The Sir Bani Yas Church and Monastery site received special attention from the founding father of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, due to the great significance and value it holds as a historic part of the UAE’s cultural heritage,” said HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan. “The late Sheikh Zayed played a key role in supporting archaeological excavations, studies and research related to history and heritage. He welcomed archaeological expeditions in the emirate and established the Al Ain Museum to display the archaeological discoveries and artefacts from these missions and provide insight into the lifestyle of those communities residing in the region before us,” he added. In 2018, DCT Abu Dhabi began the design and implementation of a new sheltering solution that would ensure optimum protection of the site’s archaeological remains from current environmental threats, minimise visual and physical impact on the archaeological remains, and enhance the visitor experience. The dignitaries who attended the opening enjoyed a guided tour, which included a briefing on its historical significance, features, and the facilities and services available at the site. ✤

Doom Days
Africa Speaks By Santana
By Bastille
An album entrenched in the concept of urban nihilism; Bastille’s newest offering is worlds apart from their previous fulllengths. Displaying an array of characters and recurrent themes, the album offers a breathtaking mixture of emotion and energy. An opening scene-setter, Quarter Past Midnight is all about escapism and carries a very distinct sound. A further step away from their debut album, the track offers a more electronic vibe, while heavy use of guitar gives the single a rock feel. While the band is aiming to achieve a complete 180 on their politically aware predecessor, reality does seem to make its existence known every now and then. Joy featuring great vocals and an awesome production, talks about the little things that bring us joy when no one is looking. Far more uplifting and hopeful than most of their work, the British alt band has a winner on their hands. A vivid illustration of humanity, adventure and imagination, Bastille’s Doom Days has turned out to be a treat that was definitely more than worth the wait. The band is truly leveling up!
Half a century after everyone’s favourite Mexican American rockers mesmerised us with their interpretation of a song by a Nigerian percussionist, the band’s latest album is their very own love letter to Africa. Infused with African rhythms and a unique freedom that in inherent in all Santana songs, Africa Speaks manages to stay close to their roots while still venturing into uncharted territory. Featuring fiery guitar work by Carlos Santana, Breaking Down the Doors has an upbeat sound that distracts from its dark lyrics. Interspersed with Carlos playing guitar and Buika singing, it makes for a danceable tune. Unfolding more Jazz tunes and finding their way as they go, Yo Me Lo Merezco conjures up early band sounds and melodies. A tribute to Carlos’ overriding humility, the track features electric guitar chords that melt in and out. A unique infusion of rock, Latin and Jazz, it’s the raw inspiration that makes Africa Speaks compelling. Salute to good music!

LUXURY FACT’S ANGELA BEITZ CHECKS INTO THE THE RITZ-CARLTON ABU DHABI, GRAND CANAL TO DISCOVER AN AMAZING PROPERTY WITH SO MUCH TO OFFER.
L
uxury and opulence are often words that can be described for many hotel properties in the capital but The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal is the true essence of five-star hospitality. The hotel wows for the start as you enter the large arches of the expansive driveway to reveal a truly stunning resort. Set amidst beautifully landscaped gardens, loads of fountains and Venetian-inspired buildings, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal offers a luxury beach resort experience minutes away from the city centre. The varieties of cultures are represented throughout, from the Bedouininspired spa to the array of dining experiences. Located just across the road from the beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the hotel is somewhat of a dream destination that could easily resemble a grand resort found on the canal shores of Venice – with all the charm and elegance of Arabian hospitality. The hotel also features a large al fresco dining space, aptly named Venetian Village that features over six restaurants. We stayed in an Executive Room with a large balcony that overlooked truly amazing views of the beach, the lush gardens and pool area. The rooms here are absolutely gorgeous and very spacious with a king size bed, a great desk area for work and leisure, and a full marble bathroom with a large tub, separate rain shower and luxury amenities. Then there’s all the five star features such as the 42” LCD TV, fully stocked mini bar, tea and coffee-making facilities (with Nespresso machine), a safe, iron and ironing board, hairdryer and complimentary shoeshine and newspaper, to name but a few of the things that will make for an even more comfortable stay. Every thought and detail has gone into these rooms and you'd easily spend the entire stay here just relaxing in your room. If you are a spa lover, a visit to ESPA is a must while staying here. Equipped with a hammam, sauna, steam room, plunge pool, and treatments that embody the very meaning of relaxation and decadence. Located at the back of the hotel, this gorgeous spa offers super soothing and relaxing treatments and boasts its own ESPA range of products. The spa offers a serene setting and is large and luxurious but still has a friendly and welcoming feeling. The décor consists of muted sand and beige tones, high ceilings and traditional Arabic archways that give off a relaxing ambiance. We are shown to the changing rooms and once we change into a plush robe and comfy slippers we opt for half an hour in the steam room and sauna as our therapist says this will help us unwind before our massage to also sweat out some of the toxins in our body. We were then treated to the Advanced Skin Radiance Facial which uses ESPA’s own brand of products. This facial works to target uneven pigmentation and skin-tone and to really breathe life back into dull

skin. It also helps to refresh tired skin and to leave your complexion bright and glowing. This treatment was incredible and was both an indulgent and satisfying spa experience. For a taste of five-star dining, The Forge Steakhouse is a must when staying at this beautiful property. If you’re serious about your steak, The Forge is the perfect venue for an intimate meal or a fun group dinner. The open kitchen allows you to watch the skilled chefs in action but if you want a quiet table, there are nooks scattered around the restaurant. While meat is high on the agenda with a plethora of options from the US, Australia, Canada and South America, their succulent seafood is also top notch. You’ll be in for an exciting dining experience with lovely staff who are all too happy to speak confidently about the menu. Li Jiang is another firm favourite among the FACT team, this Southeast Asian restaurant features an open kitchen where diners can watch as chefs prepare dim sum and traditional rice and noodle dishes with fabulous views of the Grand Mosque. Giornotte will also keep your appetite satfisted for breakfast lunch and dinner and their array of food offering is seriously impressive. FACT'S ANGELA BEITZ DISCOVERS THE MUCH TALKED-ABOUT ABU DHABI EDITION.
T
he Abu Dhabi Edition opened with rave reviews towards the end of last year and brought with it a new level of understated luxury to the capital. It's the first Edition hotel in the region and has been a very welcomed addition to Abu Dhabi. Not only is the hotel sleek and sophisticated with a boutique feel but also it's brought with it some fabulous dining concepts along with a beautiful spa. The hotel overlooks one of the pools and the Al Bateen Marina and the design of the hotel is very cool indeed. It features 198 guest rooms and 57 serviced residences. Unique food and beverage outlets are all signature venues by British Chef Tom Aikens and there is also the very chic Library Bar, a pool bar and three-storey club, Annex. The hotel also boasts two pools, two state-of-the-art fitness centres and a spa with seven treatment rooms and over 900 square metres of meeting and event space including several meeting studios, ballrooms and a boardroom. The lobby follows a more boutique feel with cosy corners and very modern furniture along with interesting pieces of art such as the installation that hangs from the ceiling that moves at different times throughout the day. The understated decor is a nice change with dark timber, soft beige marble and modern greenery which is unlike any hotel in the city. Dark wood-panelled walls, marble floors and luxe furnishings give the hotel a cool vibe. This sleek modern approach is continued into the rooms. We are staying in a Loft Room which is sophisticated and elegant in a very understated and minimalist way. There is grey oak timber flooring with solid pale khaki rugs in the main area and an off-white marble feel in the bathroom. This room is very spacious with a separate study area, private balcony with views of the marina and a spacious and elegant living room. The bathroom is huge with large soaking tub and rain shower along with custom-made Le Labo bathroom amenities with signature Edition scent. Such a nice touch. One of the main features of this hotel is the dining offering. Michelinstarred Chef Tom Aikens is all about local ingredients to ensure the highest quality dishes. All day dining concept Market focuses on imaginative, no waste, healthy lifestyle options in an open-kitchen setting. The breakfasts in particular here are phenomenal so be sure to check it out. Alba Terrace offers locally sourced coffee, Mediterranean style sharing plates and decadent dishes in an opportunity to dine al-fresco overlooking the Marina. 50

The standout restaurant though would have to be Oak Room. There is a lot to like about this restaurant before you’ve even sat down to eat. The hidden door reveals a sophisticated interior of dark timbre accented by low lighting. The venue plays classic British rock n roll which is the perfect touch to give the restaurant a fun vibe. Large, split pictures of British rock n roll stars of days gone by adorn the walls; and tables are simple with small vases of red roses. But the main focus at the Oak Room is the meat, the restaurant has its own expert meat sommelier, Charlie Grainger who will talk you through all the meat options, and there is a butchery display in the restaurant behind a cool glass room. The menu offers up loads of great steak options as you would expect but there are lots of good seafood options also and some tasty and interesting salads. Be sure to sit at the bar for a welcome drink with its beautiful crystal glassware and clever bartenders. This restaurant is a welcome treat to the Abu Dhabi dining scene with friendly and knowledgeable staff, fantastic food and chic surroundings. If you love a good spa treatment then the Edition offers a totally refined and modern spa experience. The spa space, simply named, Spa, is what you would expect from the brand; a soft, organic atmosphere welcomes guests to savour signature beverages, handblended tonics and light refreshments. Muted grey tones and low lighting follow the rest of the hotel's theme with small vases of pink roses and large orchids dotted around the spa. There are seven treatment suites where your experiences will be tailored to specific needs with customised treatments featuring bespoke scent, sound, and touch and premium products. The spa offers treatments such as facials and massages but also has unique options such as the Himalayan Sound Bowl Therapy and a special hammam experience using products from home-grown brand Hammamii. Add to that an excellent location and you’ve got a hotel that really does have it all. ✤

way from chaotic city life there’s a pristine beachfront location waiting for you in Abu Dhabi. We are, of course, talking about the pristine white-sand beach sitting right in front of The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. This popular Abu Dhabi hotel has become a true favourite whether it be for a weekend staycation, long break, brunch, spa or many of the popular dining options available. The hotel is what you would expect from a St Regis - elegant, eternal and super luxurious. It has an impressive resort feel that continues to wow you even when you've visited time and time again. The hotel has 377 tastefully designed rooms and suites, overlooking either the beautiful beach or the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. We’re staying in a St Regis Sea View Suite and this room has a serious wow factor. There is a large balcony visible through sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows, with chaise lounge and beautiful views of the incandescent turquoise Gulf. The room is large with an open-plan living area, with a mix of natural material and decor and a neutral palette of cool browns, creams, and sand complemented by nuanced coral, turquoise, and red accents. Pops of colour also appear in the modern, local artwork that adorns the walls. There is also a large workspace and a 42-inch flat screen television with cable channels, iPod docking station, and complimentary Wi-Fi, so should you be working while you are here, it is the perfect set up. Meanwhile, a fully equipped refreshment centre and around-the-clock St. Regis Butler ensure guests have everything they need. The huge white marble bathroom with completely separate his and her sink areas, a giant rain shower and freestanding bath is absolute decadence. The hotel also has its own branded bath and shower products and the big fluffy robes will have you feeling comfy in no time. The hotel also has a fantastic spa called Iridium which is located at the front of the hotel. As soon as you step into the venue you will feel tranquil and relaxed. The changing rooms are truly lovely with art deco style and large black chandeliers that are totally Instagrammable. Be sure to bring your bathers so that you can enjoy these facilities as they are super lush and will get you in the right frame of mind for your spa treatment. The whirlpool is a must. 54

rom overland expeditions to family adventures, road trips to Jebel Jais or weekend camping in the desert, Land Rover has been designing vehicles with composure and capability at their heart for more than 71 years. For the last three decades, the Discovery family has combined contemporary SUV design, unrivalled versatility and advanced technology for drivers with a spirit of adventure. Terrain Response 2 enables you to easily access our 70-plus years of expertise, with the vehicle automatically selecting the most appropriate off-road driving mode – perfect for the UAE. The new Discovery Sport is the latest addition to the bloodline and pushes the boundaries of the premium compact SUV sector with an enhanced exterior design and transformed interior. New vehicle architecture ensures the fastest-selling Land Rover ever produced is now more efficient, technologically-advanced and versatile than ever, keeping its occupants safe and comfortable in all conditions. With new features and the very latest technology, the Discovery Sport delivers superior interior space and refinement, while its 5+2 interior features a new infotainment interface with the latest connectivity, plus a more flexible seating arrangement with up to 24 combinations for enhanced versatility. There’s a lot that we love about the HSE trim. The vehicle features 18” 5 split-spoke ‘Style 511’ alloy wheels where the Land Rover logo is also prominent. Inside, and especially great for the scorching summer heat, passengers have the advantage of high-level vents that ensure comfort during long car rides for those in the second row. You’re able to control the airflow direction to your liking – it’s all in the details. Under the skin, Land Rover’s new Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA) accommodates efficient new electrified engines, including a 48-volt mild hybrid from launch, to help reduce emissions and fuel consumption. The new body is 13 per cent stiffer than its predecessor, with rigidly-mounted subframes that reduce noise and vibration intrusion into the cabin, improving comfort and providing maximum safety in the event of a collision. Trademark Discovery design cues, including the clamshell bonnet, rising beltline and tapered roof remain, but the new model is a bold exterior evolution. The proportions have been optimised to project a more striking visual with new signature LED headlamps at the front and rear, alongside a new front grille and bumpers. On the HSE, the Xenon headlights provide greater visibility. They include signature Daytime Running Lights, rear LED taillights and headlight power wash. The moment you step inside Discovery Sport, you feel a sense of calm. The panoramic roof bathes the cabin in light, whilst bold horizontal and vertical lines complement the clean, uncluttered surfaces. Add to this the premium materials which have been responsibly sourced, and you’ll see why you and your passengers will always enjoy the drive – whether it’s on an open road or in the city. In the HSE, perforated grained leather seats are soft to the touch and pleasing to the eye, these seats come in a choice of colours that truly complement the cabin architecture. The arrival of the digital Touch Pro infotainment system and the introduction of more premium materials throughout transforms

the cabin to create a high quality yet practical space. New seats across each of the three rows provide improved comfort and versatility, thanks to the second row 40:20:40 split fold and slide functionality, boosting the possible number of seat combinations to 24 and covering every eventuality – be it the school run, a family or friends road trip, or a trip into the desert. If you’re all about the perfect playlist and carpool karaoke sessions, then the enhanced sounds from the 190W system with 10 speakers will be a huge plus. Your music sounds bright, rich and beautifully balanced – in fact, this is the one vehicle that you won’t mind waiting in if there’s traffic! The Discovery Sport makes the most of its compact exterior dimensions with a versatile interior that has been enhanced to optimise interior space, provide improved small item stowage across all three rows and a 20 per cent increase in fuel tank capacity (up to 65-litres). With the option of Land Rover’s Activity Key, a wearable waterproof wristband that allows customers to lock and unlock the vehicle without using the traditional keyfob, the compact SUV is more usable than ever and designed to take your driving experience further. Designed with electrification in mind, the new Premium Transverse Architecture allows for the introduction of a new 48volt mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) powertrain on Discovery Sport. First launched on the new Range Rover Evoque, the system uses an engine-mounted belt-integrated starter generator to harvest energy normally lost during deceleration and stores it in an under-floor battery. At speeds below 17km/h (11mph), the engine will shut off when the driver applies the brakes, before redeploying the stored energy to assist the engine under acceleration to reduce fuel consumption. The new engine and transmissions are refined, quiet and efficient to drive, ensuring that whether driving through busy Downtown, a drive into rockier territory, or sandy terrain, they offer notable efficiency savings. Designed to meet the digital demands of a modern family, the latest Discovery Sport is available with a ‘smart rear view mirror’ that transforms into a video screen at the flick of a switch to display what is behind the vehicle in crisp high definition.
CITY RIDES •
The digital transformation does not stop there. Wireless charging for compatible mobile devices is introduced for the first time within the lower centre console, while a 4G WiFi hotspot, alongside USB and 12-volt connectivity points on every row, ensure passengers remain charged and connected. Second and third row occupants also benefit from individual heating and ventilation controls to make the space more comfortable. For regular drivers of the new Discovery Sport, Smart Settings uses artificial intelligence algorithms to learn driver preferences, adjusting massage and seat positions, music and climate settings and steering column positioning to suit each driver. The latest Discovery Sport is every inch a Land Rover, combining assured all-terrain handling with all-weather capability, including a wading depth of 600mm, All-Wheel Drive and a secondgeneration Active Driveline system (engine output dependent). Refined capability, transformed interiors and a very cool composure, the HSE trim is packed with entertainment and technology upgrades alongside enhanced design – and though you can essentially accessorise and build your own Discovery Sport, the HSE already seems to tick all the right boxes, for both avid motorists as well as new Land Rover fans. Delivering superb agility and handling and even greater traction in off-road conditions, you might just want to drive the long way home. ✤

Offering a wider (50-degree) field of vision and superior visibility in low light conditions from a camera mounted above the rear window, the mirror ensures rear visibility is not compromised by second row passengers or bulky items in the boot. ClearSight Ground View technology has been introduced to help drivers navigate high city centre kerbs or tackle rough terrain by projecting camera imagery that offers a virtual 180-degree view beneath the vehicle onto the touchscreen. Effectively making the bonnet invisible, this is the realisation of Land Rover’s Transparent Bonnet technology, first previewed in 2014. There is a reversing camera as standard on all models, alongside a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, which centres the vehicle in the lane based on road markings as well as maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Other active safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Driver Condition Monitor. Improving your visibility when reversing, the rear traffic monitor and blind spot assist are features we particularly want to highlight. This produces static lines that represent the vehicle’s outer perimeter and predicted path; these lines are superimposed on the rearward image to make parking easier too – and we all know how helpful that is in a place where everything from mall to street parking can be a challenge at times. fact magazine

o, this is what it feels like to actually drive one of those nice cars you pass in a Careem on the way to meetings? Ok, we’re game. Let’s go. If you’re accustomed to driving SUVs, this is going to take some adjusting. Inside, the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe is as impressive as it is overwhelming. There is a control for literally everything you could think of; headrest, backrest, phonebook, driving mode, full seat regulators and two displays under one shared glass cover that blend into a Widescreen Cockpit – to name but a few of the functions. Once you’ve figured out all the different controllers (it’s not as intimidating as it looks), the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe quickly starts to become a car with not only class, but also tons of convenience. The interior of the new AMG 53 model welcomes passengers with model-specific, exclusive appointments, luxurious materials and significantly extended options. The innovative control and display concept with bright, high-resolution displays optionally with 12.3-inch screen diagonal in each case are a central element that emphasises the horizontal orientation of the interior design. We imagine that this is what a DJ feels like on the decks; comfortable and familiar with their trusted tools and everything they need for a smooth-riding gig.

• CITY RIDES On one of the days that we had this beautiful machine, the weather took an incredibly humid turn and we found that the windscreen was constantly rocking a stubborn spell of mist. The cause of your car windscreen misting up is actually down to water vapour in the atmosphere that occurs when your body heats the air inside the cabin – as does your breath – increasing the amount of moisture it can hold. This means that when it comes into contact with your windscreen it cools and condenses, forming a 'mist'. Usually not an issue as you can play around with the climate and a/c controls, however, the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe presented a trial and error situation that took numerous adjustments to get it right and mist be gone. On the plus side, we were still able to control the playlist and that helped to keep our cool. Also, by way of instrument cluster, the optional Widescreen Cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver, as well as a central display above the centre console. Because the cockpit is fully digital, drivers can choose the look from the three different display styles "Classic", "Sporty" and "Progressive" and also configure the information and views relevant to them at will. We particularly enjoyed “Classic” and really took advantage of the touch-sensitive Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel which respond to swiping movements. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. Bonus! Via the AMG menu, it is possible to display the engine and transmission, oil temperature, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, engine output and torque, boost (charge pressure), tyre temperatures and pressures as well as the current vehicle set-up. This is a really helpful feature for anyone who drives constant long distances between the Emirates and needs a reminder to give your car some TLC and keep it in the safest shape possible. One of the coolest features that all you tech-savvy drivers will appreciate is that the infotainment system can also be operated by Linguatronic voice control which has been extended to include vehicle functions. Now, the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lights and the optional head-up display can also be controlled by voice commands. It’s all in the details and Mercedes have got it just right. Let’s talk performance because it’s definitely powerful. With a sporty style and high efficiency, the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe is definitely made for a sophisticated drive. At the heart lies a new, electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twinturbocharging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm. It is characterised by top-of-the-range performance and intelligent electrification. The engine's EQ Boost starteralternator combines a starter motor and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is fitted between the engine and transmission. This innovation as well as the intelligent charging via an electric auxiliary compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger all have the same goal: to enhance the hallmark AMG performance and driving dynamics, while at the same time reducing fuel 64

consumption and emissions. Again, you might experience a few jolts until you’ve really sunk in and got your grip on the vehicle. We also found that when moving off, high charge pressure built up slower than expected and there was a little delay in torque for acceleration. Mercedes has stated that the 3.0-litre engine reacts extremely spontaneously and provides a highly dynamic response without turbo lag. Though this may be true, it feels like when you buy a new pair of shoes and really have to break them in. The same goes for this car, once you’ve found your groove, it’s smooth sailing from then on. Aesthetically, this car is a ten – both exterior and interior. The sense of exclusivity and sportiness is also underscored by the sports seats with AMG-specific seat upholstery layout and AMG badge, red seat belts plus trim elements in carbon fibre or glass fibre in matt silver. When you’re driving in the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe down Sheikh Zayed Road, it’s the equivalent of a supermodel walking a fashion week runway. This car is a definite head turner. One of the things that this car has going for it is the fully variable
CITY RIDES •
AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which also comes as standard. This intelligent system combines the advantages of different drive concepts: the fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear axle not only ensures optimal traction, but the driver is also able to rely on high handling stability and a high level of safety under all conditions, in the dry, in the wet or in the slippery. The transition from rearwheel to all-wheel drive and vice versa is seamless, because the intelligent control is integrated into the overall vehicle system architecture. With the five Dynamic Select drive modes "Eco", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+" and "Individual", the driver can tailor the characteristics of the new 53-series models even more to suit personal preferences at the press of a button. The available range extends from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. The Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe has a lot to offer the modern day young professional, the career-driven boss lady, a long-time Mercedes enthusiast looking for an upgrade, and largely anyone who can really appreciate all of its lustrous lines and intelligent intricacies. ✤

Ready. Set. Let’s Jet. But wait, why not make your beauty glam more express and instant for your vacay selfies by booking in some treatments first? At least that’s what I do! As the only revolving lounge in Abu Dhabi, Stratos Revolving Lounge & Bar at the Le Royal Meridien has quite the reputation to match it’s stratospheric name. H
aving first arrived in the UAE in 2013 we can vividly remember Stratos as THE place to see and be seen. Admittedly, it’s been a number of years since we last visited but the arrival of a new menu brings Stratos back onto our radar after a five-year absence. Exiting the elevator on the 26th floor we immediately regret having been away for so long as the views are rather impressive, even for long-term residents of the city! Passing through the bar area that forms the crux of the restaurant, we are soon seated in a comfortable leather backed chair and greeted with genuine warmth by new restaurant manager Shane. With each rotation of the restaurant taking approximately 90 minutes, we’re able to experience a 360-degree view of the UAE capital as we dine. Moving from the waters of the Corniche dotted with wooden dhow boats, through the busy intersections of downtown and past the new CBD of Al Maryah Island, before culminating in the illuminated canopy of Abu Dhabi’s newest cultural attraction, The Louvre. Because the restaurant rotates at such a leisurely pace, diners will barely notice the ‘spin’ (so those with motion sickness need not worry)! That is, unless you leave your possessions on the table-side ledge, then you might notice your bag/phone slowly inching away. While the menu has always been international, it’s easiest to categorise Stratos as a steakhouse due to the sheer amount of grills offered. A number of promotions such as ladies night and a ‘love in motion’ set menu result in an unexpectedly busy Tuesday night when we dine and a refreshing rarity in a city of often-empty restaurants! We begin with a generous portion of Seared Scallops (AED135) served upon a swathe of smoky Romesco sauce and topped with beef bresaola and a Taleggio crisp. The result is a dish full of complementing textures, though it’s the tomato based Romesco which helps to bring depth to the perfectly cooked shellfish. The Seared Tuna (AED78) is another interesting choice, prepared with a delightful charred corn salad and olive cracker. Though we’re still undecided about the accompanying avocado pudding. The fish is prepared well but doesn’t quite reach the heady heights of the Aji Tuna steak served at Market Kitchen, 26 floors below – perhaps Chef Martinez should share his recipe. Conveniently, we rotate past the open kitchen just as our main courses are served. Amongst the choices of miso eggplant, braised short ribs and confit duck we are most excited to discover a varied selection of beef cuts, some of which are unavailable elsewhere in the city, including the rump cap and the flank steak. We order the latter. A sharing portion that two of us struggle to finish (AED355) despite the inevitable quality. The meat is rubbed in paprika and cooked sous-vide so as to remain remarkably tender. Sides of thick cuts chips, creamed spinach and lobster mac and cheese also impress, though the lobster is a little scarce. The Grilled Seabass (AED165) served with freekeh salad, micro greens and a saffron aioli which zig-zags across the plate like a lightening bolt, help bring a touch of the Middle East to the eclectic menu which takes influence from Asia, Europe and the Americas. 82

Having been defeated by the flank steak we wisely decided to split dessert. The options are fairly interesting and include Baked Alaska, Lemon Posset and a Kaffir Lime Creme Brulee. The Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart (AED42) however, has our full attention, with its thick biscuit base filled with chocolate ganache, chocolate Chantilly and served with a white chocolate sorbet which maintains the artistic plating displayed throughout the meal. Much like our recent visit to Market Kitchen, it’s exciting to see a new F&B team reviving a venue which once represented the peak of Abu Dhabi dining with its afternoon tea courtesy of celebrity chef Eric Lanlard. As a special occasion restaurant Stratos ticks many boxes when it comes to atmosphere, food and drinks but we’re left a little confounded by the service which is rather on the busy side when we visit. Thankfully, the energetic Motown soundtrack makes up for some of the pacing issues and we’re happy to see Stratos making strides towards regaining its former glory. ✤

DINING REFINED Hakkasan Abu Dhabi has stood proud at the majestic Emirates Palace for the last nine years with little change to the award-winning formula, aside from the addition of an expansive outdoor terrace and the annual reinvention of the menu. H
akkasan has now introduced a number of menus and dishes that have been created to cater towards those with certain dietary requirements. Vegetarian, nut free, gluten free and shellfish free options have been launched, catering to those with specific intolerances and those in search of healthier menu choices. Dining at Hakkasan often feels like eating within an upmarket nightclub, thanks to the modish lighting and amped up soundtrack and much like previous visits to the acclaimed restaurant, we find ourselves seated within the stylish dining room. Illuminated in electric blue hues and constructed from ornately carved screens that weave through labyrinth passageways towards one of the most striking bars in the city. Backed in slate and home to an extensive collection of premium spirits. A visit to Hakkasan isn’t complete without sampling the dim sum which are hands down some of the best in the capital. We opt for both the vegetarian dim sum platter (AED98) and the grilled vegetarian Shanghai dumplings (AED55) and are delighted by the steamed and fried parcels that we receive, which are flecked with gold and contain some particularly interesting flavour combinations such as yambean carrot and king oyster mushrooms. It’s these new vegetarian options and their showcase of quality ingredients without the need for intervention that make dining at Hakkasan such a pleasure and the dim sum are devoured before we know it! We leave the remainder of the order in the hands of our capable waiter who makes some interesting recommendations without trying to up-sell the more expensive items. From the allergen-focused, nut-free menu we thoroughly enjoy the Jasmine tea smoked Wagyu beef ribs (AED158) which may have surpassed the Peking Duck as our favourite item on the Hakkasan menu. The meat is beautifully tender and full of robust flavours from the beef and the subtle yet aromatic nuances of the tea. For those with shellfish free requirements, we would recommend the moreish sweet and sour chicken with pomegranate (AED118). The dish is everything you would expect given the name, with the lightly battered chicken pieces presented in a sweet and sticky sauce that we would love to be able to replicate at home. The roasted silver cod (AED238) represents a beautifully prepared piece of fish that breaks away at the touch of our fork. Swimming in a sauce of honey and champagne that is slightly gelatinous, but perfectly complements the delicate fish to a sweet and startling effect. Hakkasan’s dessert selection remains unchanged 86

ON THE MENU •
following the menu re-vamp earlier this year and we’re once again excited by the milk chocolate and hazelnut parfait. A rich sphere of chocolate that has the dual purpose of being both a pleasing dessert and a piece of dinner theatre, where warm chocolate sauce is poured to melt the exterior and reveal the contents within. A recommended alternative would be the raspberry and jasmine tart, a light tart with a crisp base, served alongside an impressive raspberry sorbet that ends the meal on a lighter note. With the launch of these new dietary offerings Hakkasan has again raised the bar, catering to the developing needs of diners at a time when so many restaurants are turning a blind eye. One of the pleasures of dining at Hakkasan Abu Dhabi is how the restaurant, led by energetic manager Anthony Ma, manages to remain consistent in its food and beverage offering while impressing time and again thanks to the decor and unique location. The restaurant has long been a favourite place to wow out of town visitors and Hakkasan still represents the strongest culinary offering within Emirates Palace, blending palatial opulence with the distinct Asian ambience of a Chinese teahouse and replicating the design of the Michelin-starred London flagship in the process. ✤

raversing the narrow streets of the Venetian Village on a warm summer’s evening is always a pleasure and with the water on one side and the narrow buildings replicating the Venetian Gothic architecture, it immediately feels as though we’ve been transported away from Abu Dhabi and into the heart of a bustling Italian piazza. This feeling is further enhanced as we cross the threshold into a very busy BarFly. The lounge and nightlife concept comes to us from George V Entertainment, the owners of the world-renowned Buddha Bar which has locations in Mykonos, Monte Carlo, Marrakech and other exotic global spots. Split into bar and restaurant and private dining spaces, the bar area is ideal for pre-dinner drinks. Decked out in glass tiles that take on the appearance of a mythical mermaid’s tale. Overhead, large chandeliers are suspended precariously, while bold black and white portraits adorn the red coloured walls. While the interiors feel like something ripped straight from the screen of Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge, it’s this NeoBaroque style which creates BarFly’s sultry and somewhat Bohemian charm. The venue is modelled on the original Buddha Bar in Paris that opened in 1996 (and has since closed) and despite being modernised for the Middle Eastern market of 2019, many of the original elements remain intact. A Greek statue of a headless angel takes prominence against a colour palette of black and red, while a metal staircase embedded with LED illuminations leads the way upstairs to the private dining area. While visits to BarFly often revolve around the mixed beverages and aromatic shisha. The notion of a culinary journey should not be overlooked and while the menu has barely changed since the restaurant’s inception almost three years ago, there are a number of heavy-hitting dishes which present a distinct Asian slant that should not be missed! Revolving around sharing plates and a supper club feel, a vast array of sushi, sashimi and nigiri take precedence on the menu. We begin with a selection of maki rolls. The tropical roll (AED115) presents a burst of freshness to the palate thanks to slithers of fresh mango graciously draped over tempura prawns and drizzled with a tropical passion fruit sauce. In stark contrast, the blow torched roll (AED127) offers a more robust choice thanks to a seafood mix that has been blow-torched to add a crisp texture to the creamy filling. The simplistic double tuna roll (AED103) should not be overlooked. Sure it may not be as extravagant as some of the other choices but when it comes to flavour, the combination of tuna tartare, tuna tataki and ebi furai is hard to beat. Main courses include popular choices such as black cod pot and a black truffle risotto that sounds like an absolute delight, we however are swayed by our enigmatic waiter into selecting the grilled king tiger prawns (AED169) and grilled Angus beef tenderloin (AED210). Both dishes make their mark with the beef being particularly tender and complemented by a caramelised soya sauce and mushroom fricassee. The tiger prawns transpire to be gigantic, two large crustaceans 90

served within the shell alongside grilled asparagus and a citrus yuzu pepper sauce that surprisingly balances with the shellfish rather than overpowering. As creatures of habit, we find ourselves returning to a couple of old favourites when it comes to dessert. The chocolate fondant (AED67) with its dark chocolate cake represents a fondant that really oozes with sauce. Though slightly bitter, the flavour of the chocolate is offset with a sweet caramel croquette that when pierced, secretes a caramel sauce into the mix. Plated with edible flowers, a pear sphere and a chocolate crumb for texture, this is a great choice for chocolate lovers. The mochi (AED67) provides a lighter alternative to the fondant but one that is no less enjoyable. A rice based skin surrounds the light Japanese ice cream that comes in a variety of flavours that includes mango, coconut and yuzu. BarFly may have opened in the capital three years ago but this particular nightlife venue has made quite the impression on Abu Dhabi diners, judging by how busy it is on the Wednesday night we visit. The perfect day-to-night venue, it’s quite possible you’ll visit for a sundowner overlooking the water and end up staying for dinner. Believe us, you won’t regret it. ✤

The therapist also explains that the massage is also good for improving blood circulation and restoring the natural flow of energy in the body and that the heat from the salt stones will make you sweat to help get rid of toxins and excess water. My whole body is massaged (even the face) and at the end I drift off into a light slumber. It's a truly rejuvenating experience. The salt stones are warmed like they are with a hot stone massage except they are slightly rough in texture (due to the salt) so your skin is exfoliated while it’s massaged too. HI, The Spa has a plethora of fantastic treatments to cure all sorts of stress and ailments but this time I'm trying one of their signature treatments - The Revitalising Salt Stone Massage. Rather than your average massage, this treatment uses salt stones that are made of rock crystals to sooth tired muscles and get rid of tension. The spa draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, a place of personal peace, enchantment and wellbeing. All massages and treatments are based on authentic natural healing methods found in traditional well-being practices shared by many Asian cultures. CHI’s ancient healing philosophies and rituals are designed to relax and rejuvenate both your body and mind. The space is large and luxurious and super calm and serene and we sip a ginger tea while filling out our information and what we want to get out of the treatment. I'm shown to the beautiful treatment room with dark timber and modern Asian decor and slip into a robe and the treatment begins with a foot ritual using coconut milk to soften the skin. The massage then starts and since I have very tight shoulders and a lot of pain in my upper back and neck, the therapist uses deep pressure (targeting the areas that retain the greatest tension and pain, this deep tissue massage de-stresses and relaxes the muscles) with the hot salt stones which are used to unleash tension with gliding massage strokes fact magazine

SKIN DEEP Boost your skin and achieve a glowing complexion with Remède Spa’s personalised facials, as Angela Beitz discovers at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi…
T
here’s nothing I love more than a spa treatment but with the issue of super hot weather and not a lot of fresh air in the harsh summer months, sometimes you need a skin treatment that goes that one step further. This is where the Elemis Biotec Facial Treatments at Remède Spa come in. The Remède Spa brand is well known in the capital and is an awarded spa including two accolades at our first FACT Spa & Wellness Awards in Abu Dhabi last year. The stunning spa is a high-end sanctuary for guests looking to unwind in one of the 11 treatment rooms, the wet area or the relaxation lounge. The difference with these facials as opposed to a standard facial is with the Elemis Biotec revolutionary machine, which is an energising skincare system, giving skin a powerful wake-up call to combat the effects of aging and lifestyle changes by re-establishing effective cell communication to unresponsive skin cells. The Biotec approach is clinically proven to deliver immediate and long lasting results by combining three stimuli: the first is HiPotency Actives - expertly formulated, professional highconcentrated activators; each activator provides a catalytic power to target skin cells specific needs and deliver deep skin cell penetration. The second is Skin Lift Touch- hands-ontherapy which is used in the softening and preparation of the skin throughout treatments, this significantly improves cell functionally and optimises overall results. Finally, Technology - the machine’s five technologies include
ultrasonic peel, micro-current lift, galvanic rejuvenate, LED light therapy and oxygen infusion. I sip a cup of tea in the reception area and I’m then shown to the lovely changing room. The décor of the spa follows the same theme of the rest of the hotel with lots of beautiful white marble along with gold and art deco touches. I slip into a robe and slippers and am shown to the treatment room that is beautifully decorated and super spacious. After a skin assessment, the 60-minute Elemis Biotec Facial focusing on sensitive skin soothing and oxygen infusing is suggested for me. Other treatments dedicated to anti-aging, skin lifting, firming and strengthening and illuminating and brightening are also on offer depending on your concerns. The facial also focuses on my dry skin since it is personalised using products from Elemis which feel fresh and hydrating. My face is firstly triple-cleansed using a very rich creamy cleanser and then it is carefully exfoliated using very gentle hands as the skin in very fine and sensitive. Then some extractions are performed to make sure all pores are clean and then it’s time for an uplifting facial massage before applying a thick hydrating mask. To complete the treatment, LED light therapy and oxygen infusion are used on the complexion to really boost its vibrancy and to breathe some life back into my dull skin. I continue this state of bliss in the relaxation room with a cup of tea looking out over the Corniche. This treatment has instantly boosted my skin and it feels hydrated and fresh; exactly what you want from a facial. ✤

TARGETED SKIN SOLUTIONS Want great skin but don't have loads of time on your hands? Angela Beitz heads to Clinica Joelle for the perfect facial.
W
ith overbooked schedules and people working harder than ever, looking after your health and skincare can fall by the wayside. This is where the HydraFacial at Clinica Joelle has got you sorted. Clinica Joelle has collaborated with A-list doctors, surgeons, dentists, dermatologists, body image experts, laser technicians and beauty consultants in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, who are well known in their own field and have worked with an extraordinary number of regional celebrities. Along with facial services they also offer dentistry, hair transplants, and surgical and non-surgical treatments. The Abu Dhabi branch is located in a beautiful villa in Marina Village just behind Marina Mall. Clinica Joelle has now added the popular HydraFacial experience to their services. The great thing about the HydraFacial here is that it only takes 30 minutes but delivers the same results (or even better) than your normal facial. This is why it's so great for time-poor people as you are in and out in 30 minutes and could easily do this in your lunch hour as HydraFacials require no downtime. One of the main reasons that this facial has become super popular is that it combines the cleaning and detox approach of a deep cleanse facial mixed with hydration so you’re getting optimal results instantly. My skin is first double cleansed and then assessed to see areas of concern. The HydraFacial machine has many tools that are used throughout the facial for maximum results. My skin is firstly massaged with the suction part of the HydraFacial machine to help with lymphatic drainage and to get rid of toxins. Then it’s onto the main part of the facial where the pen of the machine is used (it works as a vacuuming action to exfoliate dead skin cells and rid the skin of excess oil while pumping back in a hydrating serum). A glycolic and salicylic acid is deposited onto the skin through the tip, the pore opening is widened, allowing the vacuum suction to dislodge and suck up any gunk from your pores from deep inside. A hydrating sheet mask is then applied and I sit with this on my skin for 10 minutes while I relax. Afterwards, my face was clear and hydrated from the deep cleaning, with absolutely no redness and it’s perfect for the climate here to combat dryness and congestion and works for both normal and sensitive skin types. Highly recommended and the perfect treatment for people on the go. ✤

Other hotspots not to be missed in Abu Dhabi, include the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan, which represent each in its own flair, the Arabian traits, luxury and identity, it gives them a feel of the local culture that distinguishes the UAE. Share with us some of your professional goals for the rest of 2019... A few of my professional goals with the new added responsibilities is to align all commercial and operating activities as one cluster to maximise revenues and drive costs efficiently, another goal is to make sure the complex is the first choice for business travellers and guests attending exhibitions and events in the Capital.
