Summer, I Sea You! “Every Summer Has Its Own Story” - Puji Eka Lestari

W

hen you’ve grown up in the North West of England, summer very quickly becomes the luxury that you love (that’s until it gets TOO hot and everyone in the house wants to sit in front of the fan). In the Gulf, however, summer means hot and humid days, when even walking to the car can be a sweat-inducing chore. So, naturally, many of us escape the heat to more pleasant climes. But, for those who choose to stay and live out the sunny days in Abu Dhabi, there’s no need to fret, for summer brings with it many more leisurely opps than any other season. Not only have you got pool and beach days galore, nationwide events, activities and promotions are also stepped up to keep the crowds cool. Starting p21, read all about what Abu Dhabi Summer Season has planned for families to enjoy; and when you need some inspiration in the kitchen for your next summer soiree, pick one of the yummy Beat the Heat Recipes shared by top chefs to help you and your guests stay refreshed (p29). There’s nothing better than a long weekend spent indulging at one of the UAE’s top resorts, and this month’s Weekend Staycay shines a light on the sprawling Marriott Al Forsan (p41), as well as the Hotel Hotspot at the picturesque Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah (p47). If you’re looking for a wardrobe overhaul, American Eagle Outfitters’ summer collection will tick the box in July’s Fashion Focus (p75). Now that the food scene is operating as per normal times, you’ve got SO MANY great places to perch and tuck in. Our Culinary Spotlight is the beautiful Li Jiang restaurant (p89) and the Foodie Corner takes us to Market Kitchen (p93). The fun is set to be limitless and I can’t think of a better time of the year during which you can make new memories and stories (not the insta kind – the REAL kind). So, drink those mocktails (or your choice of liquid concoction), spend lazy days by the pool, get all the tan lines you can and simply LIVE, LOVE and ENJOY summer 2017 in all its scorching glory!☺

Azkadenya’s Trademark Twist Popular restaurant Azkadenya is now open in Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall, introducing a new audience to its much-loved MiddleEastern dishes with a creative twist. Hailing from Jordan, where the modernretro, casual dining concept was an instant hit in the cosmopolitan capital Amman, this is the group’s third outlet in the UAE and the first in Abu Dhabi. A one-of-a-kind dining experience, Azkadenya blends a modern approach to traditional Arabic dishes with quirky interiors. Drawing inspiration from the Middle East back in the 1950s right through to the early 90s – eccentric design elements are thrown together with humour to create a feast for the eyes, stomach and soul (no, really!). Open daily from 10am to 12am, start the day with Azkadenya’s breakfast menu offering a selection of delicious manaeesh and ‘signature eggs’ such as chakchouka, alongside fresh fruit juices and smoothies. For lunch or dinner, appetisers range from home-style fried kibbeh to modern falafel sliders, with a variety of soups, salads and sawani or ‘trays’. Try a shawarma enchilada with beef or chicken, for a signature twist on a classic or go ‘al fahem’ – a shawarma stick served at the table over charcoal for a serious conversation starter. The menu also includes a selection of fakkharat (traditional Arabic cooking pots), sandwiches such as chicken tawook and shawarma beef served with spiced French fries and grilled corn, plus homecooked favourites like traditional Jordanian dish mansaf. Popular Arabic desserts also get a sprinkle of contemporary flair; highlights include Sticky Date Pudding, Nutella Banana Monousheh and Umm Ali – all prepared and served the Azkadenya way. ✤ GO: Call (0)2 697 0272 for reservations and more information. 14

SUMMER BERRIES CHEF LOOSHY RISHIKESHAN, THE WESTIN ABU DHABI GOLF R E S O RT & S PA

INGREDIENTS BERRIES • 150g Fresh Mix Berries RED FRUIT CONSOMMÉ • 1l Sparkling badoit • 240g Sugar • 150g Frozen strawberry • 150g Strawberry puree • 150g Raspberry puree • 150g Frozen cranberry • 1 Orange Zest • 1 Lemon Zest • 1 Vanilla Pod • 2 Branches Fresh mint

METHOD • Put all ingredients together in a bowl and cover with cling film wrap and aluminum foil; place the bowl over a gentle pan of simmering water for two hours. • Strain through a sieve and let it cool down.

APPLE – ELDERFLOWER SORBET • 925g Granny smith apple • 100ml Lemon juice • 750ml Green apple juice • 150g Sugar • 75g Liquid glucose • 62.5ml Elderflower syrup

METHOD • Boil the liquid ingredients and bring to cool down at 38*C. • Pour the liquid mixture onto the cut apples, then blitz in a blender until smooth. • Transfer to a covered container and place in the freezer for a couple of hours.

ITALIAN MERINGUE • 200g Granulated Sugar • 100ml Water • 4 Egg Whites • ½ Vanilla Pod

METHOD • Heat the oven to 140C/gas mark 1. Line two large baking sheets with non-stick baking parchment. • To make the meringue, put the sugar and water into a small, heavybased saucepan. Dissolve over a very low heat, stirring gently without splashing up the sides of the pan. • When the sugar has dissolved, brush down the sides of the pan with a pastry brush dipped in water, then increase the heat. Do not stir the syrup once the sugar has dissolved. • Using a sugar thermometer to check, boil the syrup until it reaches 120C. • Meanwhile, whisk the egg whites in a medium bowl to stiff peaks: continue to whisk and the whites will become very stiff. • When tested the peak will hold its vertical position. This is the stiff peak consistency required for meringue. • At this stage there is still some elasticity in the whites. Avoid overwhisking, or they will lose this and break on the whisk. • As soon as the syrup reaches 120C, pour it steadily onto the egg whites with the beaters running. Try not to pour it onto the actual beaters as the syrup can solidify on them. • Continue whisking until the mixture is cool and stiff.

• Split the half vanilla pod lengthways, scrape out the seeds and whisk them into the meringue. • Pipe or spread the meringue on to the baking parchment as desired. Bake the meringues in the lower third of the oven for 45–50 minutes, or until they will lift off

the parchment cleanly and have completely dried out. • To serve, place one of the meringues in a bowl, add some of the mixed berries, add one scoop of the apple sorbet and pour over some of the red fruit consommé. Garnish with a crisp baton or biscuit. fact magazine

WEEKEND STAYCAY

eing one of the only five star hotels in the country to sit within the grounds of a sports resort, the Marriott Al Forsan Abu Dhabi is an impressive structure, home to 400 rooms and six distinct food and beverage outlets that look set to inject a new lease of life into the otherwise sleepy residential community of Khalifa City. Service is of the utmost importance when it comes to the opening of a new property and first impressions are key. At the Marriott Al Forsan, all service is on point - from the valet, to the security team and the front desk staff – all offer engaging hospitality far above the expected norm. A floral bouquet and ample soft furnishings greet guests in a lobby bathed in natural light. While the open-plan nature of the building’s design provides a sense of seamless space that would remain unchallenged were it not for the cubic glass elevators that whisk guests upwards towards the comfort of the rooms.

ROOM ENVY Our 48sqm Superior Room is designed with comfort and functionality in mind. Keeping with the theme of the property, the room showcases a contemporary vibe with a transparent writing desk and a headboard splashed with vibrant colours, resembling an artist’s canvas. A small seating area is ideal for relaxation, as are the beds, with their plump pillows and thick duvets. 42

WEEKEND STAYCAY

The bathroom is encased in glass, as if an extension to the living area (don’t worry, a remote controlled privacy screen can be lowered) and features a sleek curvature throughout the design. From the egg shaped sink, to the deep and appealing tub to a curved walk-in shower tiled in exquisite mosaics – you’ll have plenty to admire. The property emanates a distinct newness, providing an appealing feeling that you’re the first person to visit. Whether staying for business or leisure, the Marriott Al Forsan is a good choice and one that pushes technology and ease to the forefront. All rooms contain a media hub (for all your connectivity needs), 32-inch television, plenty of sockets and super fast Wi-Fi that connects seamlessly and without issue throughout the entire hotel. In the summer months, the focus of the room will be the private balconies, offering views over the Al Forsan International Sports Resort and the hotel’s expansive pool (it’s, honestly, your most insta-perfect shot of the entire stay).

FOOD FOR DAYS Six new dining destinations accompany the arrival of this new hotel, each unique and looking to bring something distinct to the city. We’re in love with Khayal, the hotel’s allday dining restaurant which adds a personal touch via tours of the buffet and a multitude of seating options. We suggest you try and bag one of the raised tables that appear to be ‘floating’ amongst the water features. The

buffet spread is large and offers everything from dim sum and sushi, to Arabic favourites and Indian specialties. The versatility of the restaurant is remarkable, as the buffet adapts for the various meals while rarely repeating dishes. Breakfast was our favourite for its abundance of fresh fruits, thick slabs of French toast and some unique inclusions such as noodle soup and baked flapjacks. Sitting in the centre of the hotel is the Lobby Lounge, a great spot to gratify that caffeine fix or indulge in afternoon tea. Couture Lounge is the place for happy hour sundowners while Appaloosa is a hybrid of casual sports bar and shisha lounge, serving up some interesting dishes. Amongst the usual salads, sandwiches and pub grub, we suggest the seared tuna burger with its fiery wasabi mayonnaise and black squid ink bun (a food/social media maven’s dream). The Grill is the Marriott Al Forsan’s crowning glory, a steakhouse that looks to differentiate from the numerous other steakhouses in Abu Dhabi. Forgoing the usual masculine connotations of dark wood and leather furnishings, The Grill is a sleeker affair with a modern and light design drawing attention to the central show kitchen. Service throughout the restaurant is engaging with a number of interactive dishes such as the Prime Fox River Certified American USDA Beef and the Grill Specialist Dessert (a twist on traditional Arabic Kunafa) prepared tableside. This element of dinner theatre not only provides insight into how the dishes are prepared, but also allows diners the opportunity to interact with the chef before enjoying some of the best cuts of meat that the capital has to offer.

RELAXATION GAME STRONG Speaking of the pool, it has to be one of the biggest in Abu Dhabi. A generous body of water provides a definite wow factor, punctuated with palm trees and small alcoves to provide privacy. Shallow ledges situated underneath the tranquil waters are perfect for sunbathing and reading books, while a swim-up bar is located at the far end of the pool. fact magazine

WEEKEND STAYCAY

Beneath a shaded canopy is a splash park for younger guests, an aqua playground full of fountains and water jets bound to keep the little ones occupied for hours, as is the kids playground with climbing structures and a poolside sandpit. The Marriott Al Forsan may not be located near the beach but there is little doubt that this is a resort, offering a number of leisure activities including horse riding, a state of the art fitness centre and a luxurious spa. Saray Spa would be our pick, offering a number of treatments in a tranquil environment, bound to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. This spa promotes an all-encompassing experience where guests are encouraged to linger in the relaxation room long after their treatments are finished. We indulged in a 60-minute Swedish Massage in what ranks as one of our favourite spa experiences in Abu Dhabi, where electronicallycontrolled heated massage beds provide an additional level of comfort. The current buzz surrounding Marriott Al Forsan is due to a culmination of factors; the location, the high service levels, the quality of product and the leisure activities available. Whether it’s shooting, archery, wake-boarding or something more relaxing (like the spa or swimming pool), Marriott Al Forsan has filled a gap in the market by striking a balance between relaxation and a oneof-a-kind experience. It’s a fantastic new addition to Abu Dhabi and the ideal spot for a weekend staycation. ✤ GO: CALL (0)2 201 4000 OR V I S I T W W W. M A R R I O T T. HOTEL HOTSPOT

The brilliant white exterior of the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah gives little away, yet the lobby of this 319-room property marks a great introduction to the very nature of the brand. Natural tones embrace guests as they make their way beneath dazzling light fittings and across plush rugs to the reception, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide remarkable views out to the sea. Waldorf’s inaugural property in New York was seen as the world’s greatest hotel at the time of its construction and has left a lasting legacy for the brand to measure the standard of others. Over a century later, this quality and consistency remain in place, with the check-in process undertaken with startling efficiency. A central clock is a fixture of Waldorf lobbies worldwide and the presence of a timepiece in the Dubai property takes prominence over a sweeping staircase of gleaming marble, leading out towards the beach. REFINED LIVING We get a feeling of desert chic as we traverse the communal corridors leading to the rooms, for the desert has quite literally been brought indoors. Sand and palm trees fill the corridors, leaving little doubt of our Arabian location. Our first-floor room is spacious and offers glorious views of the Dubai skyline over the flat waters of the Arabian Gulf. The iconic Burj Al Arab stands strong on the horizon, as the sunlight refracts off the Burj Khalifa in the distance. Our two-queen bed Deluxe Room is without a doubt one of the nicest we’ve stayed in. Awash with tones of ivory, beige and hints of turquoise, it’s tastefully decorated and features all the modern comforts you’d expect from a brand such as the Waldorf. A large 42inch HD television, a media hub for all your devices and an espresso maker (none of that

powdered stuff here) all add to the attention to detail which is astounding. Even the crockery is similar to something you would expect to find at a wedding. A specialr mention must be given to the signature Waldorf Astoria beds (complete with pillow menu) and what are easily the most comfortable slippers and robes in the Emirates - period! The bathroom continues the lavish feeling of the room, finished in marble and complete with double vanity units, a powerful rainfall shower (with seating ledge for those too lazy to stand) and a tub that features a television. It’s almost too difficult to leave the room when the levels of comfort are so high. HOLIDAY HAVEN The hotel’s location on The Palm Jumeirah means that it’s a little far from the tourist attractions of Dubai but it’s unlikely that guests will notice with so much on offer within the hotel’s manicured grounds. Amenities include the Waldorf Astoria Spa, featuring a sauna, steam-room, ice fountain, 12 treatment rooms and extensive hydrotherapy facilities. With over 50 treatments available in a serene and tranquil environment, it’s worth booking yourself in for some extensive pampering. Often, spas can feel a little clinical, but here, relaxation is at the forefront. For those with fitness in mind, the state-of-the-art gym is open 24-hours-a-day. Outside, amongst grassy lawns and rows of fragrant frangipani trees, is the private beach. A 200m swathe of golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see and leading down to tranquil azure waters that are shallow and ideal for young children and less competent swimmers. If relaxing on the sand isn’t your thing, the onsite water sports centre offers snorkelling, kayaking and water skiing, against the backdrop of the Palm’s residential fronds and the towers of Dubai Marina. Tennis courts and two temperature-controlled swimming pools are also available for guests. The lagoon-like family pool would be our choice, offering different depths of water and spacious cabanas, including some that are well-placed over the water for a special dining experience. An adults-only pool is provided for those looking for additional peace and quiet and even in the intense summer heat, the attentive lifeguards are on hand with bags of chilled water and ample shade to ensure comfort is maintained for all guests poolside. fact magazine

FOOD GOALS Six distinct dining destinations are available to take you on a worldwide culinary journey. Having heard wonderful things about Social by 3-star Michelin Chef Heinz Beck we were a little disappointed to find the restaurant closed for Ramadan. However, things were quickly redeemed with a dinner reservation at Lao. With so few Vietnamese fine-dining restaurants in the Emirates, it’s a refreshing choice of cuisine for the Waldorf and one that certainly pays off. Indulging in a set menu of Lao’s signature dishes, we’re taken on a sensory epicurean adventure from the coastal waters of Vietnam’s Halong Bay to the mountainous rice terraces of Sapa. With Vietnamese cuisine renowned for its aromatic flavours, these are evident in every dish throughout the meal. From the tender beef wrapped in a King Henry leaf and served with peanut and tamarind sauces, to the stir-fried chicken breast with aromatic lemongrass – every dish is as tasty as the next. Breakfast at Mezzerie offers guests a vast spread of freshly baked breads and pastries, artisanal yoghurts, dim sum, a gluten free corner and not one but TWO varieties of pancakes. It’s one of the most expansive breakfast buffets we’ve encountered with a focus on quality to match. The Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah is a property that offers sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Dubai. The location is perfectly suited to a distinguished brand that exudes luxury and exclusivity. Set amidst tranquil gardens and the gently lapping waves of the Arabian Gulf, it’s a property that is instantly memorable for its quality of service and pristine accommodation. The works of Jean Tinguely and GĂźnther Uecker foregrounded contemporary reality through the use of materials, subject matter, and methods drawn from both daily life and mainstream culture. 52

REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT

Considering that we’re in a part of the world where five-star means the utmost luxury, a brand like the Four Seasons fits right in. High expectations, attention to detail and a sense of local is what this hospitality giant is out to achieve. And we can now attest that it does just that! The Four Seasons Hotel Doha is completely unique in comparison to other top hotels in the Qatari capital. Located in the most perfect place – both close to the heart of West Bay and the ample things to see and do along the Corniche and neighbouring areas, it’s no wonder that both business and leisure travellers use it as a base from which to conduct work as well as explore Doha. We check in to the incredible Ambassador Suite to indulge in tourist-cum-trade life (hoping to attend some meetings during the trip and get some much-needed relaxation time in, too).

SUITE LOVE Walking into the Ambassador Suite is like finding your perfect home on the first viewing. It’s big, bright, spacious and has ALL the luxuries that you’d expect from a room type of this prominence. The hotel describes the suite as “a balance of privacy and luxury” and that couldn’t be more accurate. Open up the doors to the two step-out balconies (one off the living room and the other in the bedroom) whilst you’re going about your holiday. Sprawl across the mega-comfy king bed and catch up on emails whilst admiring serene views of the Arabian Gulf, all from the comfort of the fluffy duvet. For more blissful moments, make yourself an espresso – or other beverage of choice – from the private bar and sip on a warm cuppa as you take in the homely vibes of this amazing suite.

It was the blend of practicality, space and comfort that really had us in awe every time we’d gone out and come back to our little sanctuary. There’s space for EVERYTHING. Literally, bring as many suitcases full of clothes, shoes and accessories as you want because this place has some seriously good storage! The French Empire-style furniture is utter elegance, further enhanced by the Marte chandelier in bronze fusion with 24-karat gold plating (yes, you heard right!). There’s a dining table with cushy sofa-style seating and a lovely desk area for those who prefer to keep work life and sleep time separate. The marble bathroom is a whole different ball game. A deepsoaking tub is all the insta-worthy goals you’ll need, alongside the double vanity and the standalone shower, which was refreshing every time! Luxury amenities add to the already wonderful service. For those who are into their music and entertainment, there’s a DVD/CD player, iPod docking station, flat screen TV with a number of channels, and you can even get game consoles on request. So, tell us, why would you even want to leave the suite life? We certainly didn’t!

FOOD ENVY You shouldn’t be surprised to hear that we almost immediately fell in love with the dining venues at Four Seasons Hotel Doha. After all, most of them are highly-acclaimed and award-winning, and our high standards were met from the get-go. Breakfast in Elements was a sensory affair; eat every type of egg concoction, delve into dim sum, gorge on pastries and pancakes galore, go for healthy cereals, fruit juices and SO MANY more yummy treats. fact magazine

“IF YOUR INNER FOODIE WAS SLEEPING A WHILE, THIS EXQUISITE FARE AT NOBU DOHA WILL AWAKEN THEM, SO FAST.”

The REAL life-changing food experience, however, came in the evening at the one and only Nobu Doha. It’s the largest Nobu restaurant in the world; the brainchild of celebrity Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa, serving up his signature new-style Japanese cuisine. Start your evening at the beautiful bar where every liquid potion is a blend of flavour and skill unlike anything you’ve tasted before. In the cooler climes, the stunning rooftop lounge is ideal for after-work and weekend catch-ups, whilst the main dining room is a breath-taking centrepiece of lively chatter, excellent food and on-point service. In total, there are seven stylish entertaining spaces, and you’ll get the best glittering views of the West Bay skyline from most of them – SO MANY selfie opps! Some of the standouts included the Spicy Tuna from the Nobu Bites menu; Beef Tenderloin with Dry Miso and Salmon Spicy Ponzu from the Cold Dishes; Mixed Seafood Ceviche; King Crab with Tomato Salsa Tacos; the signature Black Cod Yuzu Miso from the Hot Dishes; Rock Shrimp Tempura and a pretty much every single Sushi Roll on the menu. If your inner foodie was sleeping a while, this exquisite fare at Nobu Doha will awaken them, SO fast. Service at the restaurant was one of the best we’ve ever experienced, in any restaurant – and we’ve been to our fair share of classy fine-dining joints. Even though it’s an upscale place, the atmosphere is super friendly and welcoming, with staff being completely knowledgeable on food and drinks. No sign of stuffiness here!

LEISURELY LIFE We can testify that the Four Seasons Hotel Doha is the only place we’ve ever stayed at that has motivated us to get up and go to the gym every day of our trip. Why? Because the fitness facility is out INSANE! There’s every machine you could dream of, the views are picturesque (even the walk past the pool to the gym will inspire you to be healthier) and the team is very helpful and accommodating. The same goes for the impressive spa with its 11 treatment rooms and luxurious Sodashi facials and massages. For head-to-toe rejuvenation – it’s the most perfect icing on the cake to end our mind-blowing staycation on a HIGH! ✤ CALL +974 4494 8888 OR VISIT WWW.FOURSEASONS.COM/DOHA FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION. 56

pening on July 5, and running through to July 22, the duo show features modern contemporary installations expressing renewable themes in art by Dubai-based emerging artists, Stephanie Neville and Jeff Scofield. Scofield and Neville explore a subjective narrative with the environment in conjunction with society, where the individual is led through an adventure towards self-identity. Scofield says: “By weaving together natural materials and found objects, we construct visual narratives through a tactile process of collecting and assembling, thereby giving new meaning to materials.” The exhibition explores the interconnectedness that

binds us in the context of transience and flux, which define our shared experiences in the UAE, while sustaining one’s personal identity. Neville further explains: “This construction is likened to the essence of fabric— the warp and weft of individual threads combined to strengthen and unify, while also providing malleability and adaptability.” The visual investigation is made through various applications of woven materials. Attention is paid to expressing the intrinsic nature of these materials, such as the durability of textiles and the fragility of the separable threads; the delicateness of individual sheets of paper juxtaposed with the power of words; the mutual reinforcing of industrial materials such as metal wires and wooden blocks; as well as the organic expression of natural elements manifested in cotton, felt and threads. Having previously collaborated at an Artist in Residence program at the Liwa Art Hub, both artists investigate the use of salvaged and upcycled materials. A dialogue exists between their individual styles, highlighted by an interest in installation art and contrasting yet complimentary explorations of materials at large and small scales. ✤ GO: Visit www.nyuad-artgallery.org/en_US/artscenter-project-space for more information.

BIG SCREEN Spider-Man: Homecoming

Highlights

What’s it about:

What’s it about? After a thrilling experience with the Avengers, a young Peter Parker returns to live with his Aunt May. Under the guidance of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man while trying to balance his ordinary high school life in Queens. His powers are soon put to test as a new villain in town, the Vulture.

DIRECTOR: Jon Watts CAST: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Calling all superhero junkies - drop everything and grab some popcorn as everyone’s favourite web-wielding man is back in action! Spiderman is all set to take centre stage and give the former Spider-men a run for their money. With Marvel taking over the franchise, there are bound to be some refreshing new changes. Thankfully for us, the plot doesn’t dwell on the origin story of Spider-Man and skips that part entirely. We witness Tom Holland as a young Peter Parker trying to make sense of his new identity and juggle regular high school drama while keeping his Spidey identity on the down low. The fresh faced Holland is the invigorating force this franchise needed and we’re certainly not complaining! Unlike its predecessors, the film focuses more on the man behind the mask and seamlessly blends the concept of a coming-of-age comedy with all the makings of a superhero blockbuster. With Robert Downey Jr. as Parker’s mentor along with a much younger Aunt May - there are less clichés. But can it live up to its comic legacy?

Lady Macbeth

“ Unlike its predecessors, the film focuses more on the man behind the mask and seamlessly blends the concept of a coming-of-age comedy with all the makings of a superhero blockbuster.”

Trapped in a loveless marriage with a man twice her age, Katherine is forced to adhere to a strict schedule and is prohibited from leaving the house. With her husband and his father away for work, Catherine starts a steamy affair with Sebastian. What follows is a twisted tale of love and gore.

– Spider-Man Homecoming

DIRECTOR: William Oldroyd CAST: Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? A stunning narrative of race, abuse, violence and class against the backdrop of Victorian aristocracy - Lady Macbeth is a dark and intriguing story of uninhibited love and callous cover-ups. An adaption of Nikolai Leskov’s novella, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, the film exhibits a Victorian noir air with increasingly feminist undertones. Katherine, a strong and willful young woman is married off to an older man, they’re sent to live in a grand but remote manor. Bored and alone, the stifling hold of the house encourages her to engage in a passionate affair with the young and brooding Sebastian. What follows will put every horror movie to shame! Florence Pugh is absolutely remarkable in her debut role as Katherine and truly makes the film her own. An intoxicating plot and climax!

Evolve

By Imagine Dragons

Socially conscious lyrics and some purely dope music - Imagine Dragons’ newest offering is the album we all need and deserve! The Las Vegas band’s third LP, Evolve is here and ready to take the music world by storm. The album certainly displays a sonic shift and is much more scaled down than their previous works, but just as grand! Believer, a quickpaced track with a dash of hip-hop is quite possibly one of the best tracks on the album. The single floods with blues rock and grunge influences but still maintains the signature style of synth-heavy rock. Thunder, a track about not conforming to societal norms is oozing with energy and enthusiasm. The soothing style of the impactful single is sure to win the hearts of many! The Nevada natives take a more pop-rap approach for Whatever It Takes - further expanding their list of genre influences. Evolve certainly takes the band’s musical repertoire to a whole new level, adding to their already incredible legacy. We are totally on board this music train!

By HAIM

Fans looking for a much needed HAIM fix can finally rejoice as the sisters are finally gracing us with their long-awaited musical comeback! After a four-year-long hiatus, the trio brings us Something to Tell You and it’s LIT! The album is the perfect blend of classic songwriting with a modern and exciting twist, a true testament of their sincere, enthusiastic selves. Carrying a summery 90’s pop vibe, Want You Back is a contrast of lyrics and productionwith the pop vibe transporting us back to the good old days! The album’s lyrics are a reflection of how their lives have changed in subtle ways and the soundtrack is much more organic than their previous work. Right Now, an understated and melodic track has all the makings of a HAIM song. The track may not be a summer hit but it certainly shows a more mature and calmer side of the band that we haven’t seen before- they totally get our kudos for that! Here’s hoping the sisters continue to amaze us with their musical genius. Final verdict: the wait was worth it!

Eloise, the product of their mother’s first marriage to a Frenchman, is as perfect as they come. Raised in the lap of luxury, she is nothing like her half-siblings and to top it off, she’s infuriatingly nice. Ginder employs intelligent and insightful writing with a dash of snark to bring to life the power of family. He delves into the complicated ways we hate the ones we love the most in a bitingly funny yet incredibly tender novel!

e all know just how huge the SUV market has become in recent years. With the massive success BMW found in the market, it was only a matter of time before the car giant that is Mercedes Benz, entered into the lucrative 4x4 coupé fray. The AMG-GLE 43 is the latest model designed in the segment by the automobile giants, in a bid to secure their continued success. This Mercedes machine is a new model delivered forth by the geniuses responsible for decades of top class motor vehicles. But just because a brand decides to try something new, doesn‘t mean it will necessarily work. We decided to take Al Haddad Motors up on their generous invitation for a test drive to see for ourselves what this car has to offer. Approaching the Mercedes, one is immediately struck by the unconventional coupé lines. From many angles, this car

ISLAND RIDES

looks mean and aggressive, like it‘s telling you to keep quiet and to give the dealership your money. Its shape is rather long and wide giving it a bulky look on the outside, but offering more than enough space within. It certainly has a sporty essence to it and feels as if it’s bragging about the experience which awaits you. Complete with 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG 5-twinspoke light-alloy wheels, aluminium-look illuminated running boards with rubber studs and a two-pipe exhaust system, its exterior simply demands attention. Slipping inside the cabin, one is instantly impressed by the classy layout and quality of the materials. The seats are wide and comfortable, providing an enjoyable base for the operating of the vehicle. The operating system has an 8.4” screen and comes complete with voice controlled navigation. This is a very handy feature when it comes to safe driving practices. We found the system as a whole to be very user friendly

and easy to navigate. There are a variety of other special features to be found in the cabin, including an eco-start/stop system, heated and ventilated seats, dual climate control and even heated and cooled cup holders. Spacious door bins, a reasonably sized glove box and a large central cubby hole take care of one’s storage needs. One of our favourite features was the panoramic sunroof. The back of the vehicle is large enough to seat three adults comfortably with adequate head and leg room. Although the boot itself has 38.3 cubic feet of storage room, one can fold the back seats down to extend the area to 80.3 cubic feet. For convenience, an automatic tailgate is fitted as standard. It was however when we got her on the road that this car really began to impress. For a vehicle that weights well over two tonnes, it has plenty of power and acceleration. The Bi-Turbo V6, 362hp Engine is ample to propel a beast of this weight and size.

“IT CERTAINLY HAS A SPORTY ESSENCE TO IT AND FEELS AS IF IT’S BRAGGING ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE WHICH AWAITS YOU. “

In fact it races from 0 – 100kph in only 5.4 seconds. The engine is paired with a nine speed automatic transmission, which shifts seamlessly through the gears. With multiple modes on offer namely, comfort, sport, sport plus and individual, we were spoilt for choice. It is however the sport plus mode which really shows off the 4x4’s capabilities. We found the suspension system to be brilliant and there is a huge amount of traction and grip on offer. Although the breaks are very efficient, one must remember the weight of the car when calculating breaking distance. On the subject of safety, the vehicle contains a host of predictive and preventative measures due to its cameras, sensors and electronics. These include blind spot assist, lane keeping assist and active break assist. A 360 degree parking system is present to help you when required. The overall result is a smooth ride in a comfortable vehicle, in which one feels both safe and in complete control. In truth, there are too many great features both internally and externally on this vehicle for them all to be mentioned here. What we can tell you, is the designers at Mercedes continue to produce worthy adversaries to their BMW counterparts and we strongly recommend you book a test drive. Do not deny yourself the experience. ✤ 66

The next year saw a complete shift in gears, with many leading B-Boys stepping out and many newcomers stepping in. The third Bahrain Cypher took place without its first champion, B-Boy Zilla and without the reigning champion, B-Boy Huey Flava. With the winner’s slot open for the taking, the country’s B-Boys took The Alumni Club stage with everything they had, and boy did we see some funky moves! In a heated and polarising final battle, B-Boy Twist defeated fan-favorite, B-Boy Triple X, to become the Red Bull BC One Bahrain Cypher 2014 champion! But champions are never gone for too long, and both B-Boy Zilla and B-Boy Huey Flava made an explosive return during Bahrain’s fourth cypher to challenge B-Boy Twist for the title, not to mention, B-Boy Triple X, who came so close just the year before. With a fire under their bellies, the country’s best B-Boys took on the Malja Bahrain stage with an outdoor set-up packed with supporters to throw it down again. B-Boy Triple X got his chance at redemption during the semi-final battle, but it was B-Boy Huey Flava who knocked the crown off B-Boy Twist’s head during an intense finale, marking B-Boy Huey Flava the returning champion of Red Bull BC One Bahrain Cypher 2015. Last year, Red Bull BC One added a new change to the competition format: there will no longer be any regional qualifiers, and all cypher winners will head straight to the

Red Bull BC One World Final in Nagoya, Japan. The competition reverted back to its roots, using an invitationonly format to create the World Final top 15 line-up, while the local cypher winners battle it out at the Last Chance Cypher for the last open spot in Nagoya, two days before the World Final. The chance to head straight to Japan was not taken lightly, and Bahrain’s B-Boys were ready to throw down once again. Despite the increased calibre of the local B-Boy scene, B-Boy Huey Flava battled his way through newcomers and past champions to become the three-time winner and longest-running Red Bull BC One Bahrain Cypher champion. With the sixth cypher coming up in July, tensions are running high in the B-Boy scene and with the fans; is it going to be another notch on the belt of B-Boy Huey, will B-Boy Zilla or B-Boy Twist fight back to regain the crown, or will we witness the rise of an entirely new champion like B-Boy Triple X? legant and low-lit, Li Jiang has an outlandish bright red decor designed to replicate a traditional high-end Asian eatery. Clearly no expense has been spared on the interior; striking glass chandeliers and statement lighting offset the dark wood, your eyes are constantly drawn to the feature wall with piles of red-hued fabrics stacked on top of one another. Alongside the stunning decor you can’t help but notice the distinctive aromas wafting from the glass kitchen. The sights and sounds of the busy chefs make for great viewing, pots and pans are flying in all directions and flamboyant flaming woks make for quite the show. Chef de Cuisine at Li Jiang, Chef Tran Thanh Chung and his culinary team have created a mouth-watering Southeast Asian menu that offers diners a modern interpretation of authentic oriental cuisine and regional specialities. We dined on a busy Friday evening

and the atmosphere was lively, tables of animated guests provided a background of constant chatter. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable - making many good recommendations for both food and drinks, including a rather tangy lychee martini. Complimentary rice crackers with dipping sauces will start you off. We begin with a selection of appetisers, including: classic vegetable spring rolls with a sweet chilli sauce, bright green jade vegetable dumplings served in an authentic bamboo basket and a seared salmon salad with shiso, seaweed and avocado dressing. For mains, it’s a tangy, creamy-coconut vegetable green curry served with Cantonese Fried Rice and the tender 48-hour, slow-cooked Rendang Wagyu Beef Short Rib, which literally falls off the bone. Sides of steamed broccoli and steamed vegetables were the perfect accompaniment; both mains were equally delicious, pleasing both the vegetarian diner and the carnivorous

eater at the table! Other notable dishes on the menu include a selection of spicy soups, succulent crispy duck, honey-glazed Black Cod and the steamed Chilean Sea Bass. Dim Sum lovers are spoilt for choice with a whole section of the menu dedicated to the appealing steamed and pan-fried dumplings. There’s seafood, chicken, and awesome veg options too. It’s choices galore! Speaking of vegetarians, there’s a lot on the menu for non-meat eaters as well, which is always gratifying. All the dishes we sampled were flavoursome and beautifully presented. Dessert is a different ball game. We go for the Fried Raspberry Ice Cream out of sheer curiosity – as we’re never sure of what to expect with traditional Chinese sweet treats. The ice cream itself was tasty with the outer shell being thick and doughy rather than crispy, however the saving grace was the godly fresh strawberries and warm Valrhona chocolate sauce - delicious. Fans of traditional Mango Sticky Rice will be pleased by its inclusion on the menu, and Li Jiang also has a well-stocked cellar and a range of teas. Alongside the plush indoor dining area, Li Jiang, which means ‘beautiful river’ in Chinese, has an outdoor terrace tucked away in the hotel’s olive grove with eye-catching

views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. A separate bar set behind a corridor of bottles at the restaurant’s entrance offers Asian inspired mixology and the perfect spot to enjoy a pre and post dinner beverage. For its central location, innovative menu and interactive elements, Li Jiang has secured it a consistent stream of accolades, awards and a loyal crowd. Fine-tune your use of chopsticks and treat yourself to a tasty feast while enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of Asian cuisine. ✤ GO: Visit Li Jiang at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. hen arriving at Market Kitchen, a warmth and cosiness is evident. The venue is designed to give diners a sense of feeling at home and being comfortable – and it works beautifully. The wooden flooring, warm lighting, benchtop counters and trinkets dotted around, plus an olive tree in the middle of the room, combine to create a cottage-kitchen feel. Simplicity is key here, from the logo and décor to the menus and the dishes themselves. It’s simple in the stateliest of ways and feels intimate. The food is understated; the meals work with a base ingredient and moderate flavours. At first glance, the dishes on the menu seem quite simple, but there are loads of amazing options. From the starters, the crispy calamari is definitely one to try with its citrus chilli dip while the salmon tartare is also really impressive with a layer of creamy avocado that sits below the salmon and is surrounded by a pool of zingy soy and ginger dressing. That punchy sauce cuts through the richness of the other

two ingredients and ties the whole thing together rather nicely. It’s just SO good. Then we try the curious crispy sushi – slices of tuna on top of fried cubes of tofu. The chipotle mayo that binds both together adds another interesting element. It’s a very tasty bite of food and it’s the sort of moreish dish that you keep coming back for again and again. Market Kitchen is also well known for their pizzas and before we know it, the truffle pizza with Fontina cheese arrives. It’s thin, crispy, and generous with the cheese and fungus and is absolutely sensational. It’s dangerously addictive with its oozing cheese and subtle truffle flavour (and that’s why we love it!). The other pizza to try is the Beef Carpaccio with shaved mushrooms, parmesan and arugula. Super simple and fresh with great flavours. For the mains, we choose the Parmesancrusted chicken and the Beef Short Ribs. The Parmesan-crusted chicken is the perfect dish with basil-lemon butter underneath the crispy chicken – it’s perfectly cooked and not too dry. The beef

FOODIE CORNER

ribs are equally delicious in their soy glaze and with a touch of the fork they fall apart. The dish is served with an interesting apple puree and rosemary crumb; this is a really interesting food pairing and one that was impressive and delish with every bite. The sides of truffle mac and cheese, greens with parmesan and lime and enough mash and fries to feed a family are also spot on, and we’re left feeling content and very full. We’ve hit that stage where we don’t quite know how we’ll fit dessert in but are never ones to shy away from sweet treats, so we try the Salted Caramel Ice Cream Sundae (which the restaurant is famous for) and the Market Cheesecake. The first is an absolute knockout with generous amounts of ice cream along with peanuts, popcorn and chocolate fudge sauce and stunning presentation. The cheesecake is simple and classic, served with raspberry sorbet and port-glazed figs. This is the perfect end to a fantastic meal and we’re genuinely mesmerised with every dish along with the really fast and friendly service. We can’t recommend this restaurant enough! ✤ GO: Visit Market Kitchen at Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi. Call 800 101 101 for reservations and more information.

hen arriving at Bab Al Qasr you feel a sense of a modern Arabian fairy tale, tradition and timeless spirit. The hotel opened late last year with their Ayana Spa opening a few months ago. It’s a hotel that combines traditional artisanship with contemporary comforts to create a richly drawn experience. With iconic architecture and an exclusive address on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, Bab Al Qasr impresses on all levels. We’re excited to be visiting the spa as we’ve heard great things and will be experiencing a Moroccan Massage and a Cure Hydrating Facial. We are welcomed with a cool ginger water that we sipped while completing the pretreatment form in the reception lounge. The questionnaire will give your therapist some idea of your needs, expectations and any relevant medical conditions. The reception area is dimly lit and relaxed and it doesn’t take long for us to start to unwind and really get into the spa mood. We’re then escorted to through spa for a quick tour and the finishing’s and details are just beautiful. Chic and elegant, everything is designed to create the perfect atmosphere for relaxation. Dark wood and beige tiles accented with light blue towels and linen with very dimmed lights create the illusion of being tucked away in a serene space. Following the hotel’s Moroccan vibe, the spa feels very chic and exotic. After changing into a robe and slippers we are shown to our treatment room and while we’re having a foot soak, the therapist shows 96

us the different oils she’ll be using today for the Moroccan Massage. This massage is customised to individuals needs focusing on stresses of everyday life. The Les Sens De Marakech Argan Oil that’s used has healing properties for the skin and is also super hydrated so this is a great bonus. We lay down on the super comfortable treatment bed and our therapist starts with our legs and then moves up to really focus on tight areas around our upper back, neck and shoulders. This is then finished with our arms, stomach and a dreamy head massage. For our Cure Hydrating Facial products from the Natura Bisse range are used which are up there with some of our favourite spa brands. This advanced facial features a deep brush cleanse to purify and prep skin, before a concentrated peel that naturally polishes away complexion-dulling cells, radically refining skin’s texture. We’re shown our skin under a special light that highlights

factors such as dehydration with mild oiliness around the t-zone. Our therapist then aims to help these concerns. To deeply hydrate, boost cell regeneration and firm facial contours, the skin is covered with two different smoothing masks and then a rich serum is applied and an intense massage is performed to lift the skin. An eye gel is also applied followed by an SPF. We’re shown to the gorgeous relaxation room which has large windows overlooking the Corniche and Emirates Palace and we enjoy unwinding here with green tea, dates and dried apricots. The spa is really worth a visit with excellent staff and beautiful facilities. There are wonderful treatments to suit everyone’s needs and you’ll want to linger a little longer. ✤ GO: Visit Ayana Spa at Bab Al Qasr Hotel, Abu Dhabi.
