HELLO SUMMER
“
You can feel it in the streets. On a day like this, the heat. It feel like summer." – Childish Gambino.
FACT Magazine Abu Dhabi Edition • JULY 2020 VOLUME 06, ISSUE 12
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES PUBLISHERS EDWARD SMITH RAMI KHALIL
I
n the Gulf, summer means hot and humid days, when even walking to the car can be a sweat-inducing chore. Naturally, many of us would usually escape the heat to more pleasant climates. Still, considering the current circumstances, a lot of us will choose to stay and live out the sunny days in Abu Dhabi this summer. There's no need to fret though, for summer brings with it many more leisurely opportunities for relaxation than any other season. Not only have you got beach days, staycations and daycations galore but also summer dining and plenty of brunches to partake in. Starting p16, we have a selection of Summer Recipes shared by top chefs to help you stay refreshed. We've also got an extensive guide on various ways to Beat The Heat and make the most of summer in Abu Dhabi on p25. There's nothing better than a long weekend spent indulging at one of the UAE's top resorts, and this month's Staycation Spotlight shines a light on the picturesque Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa (p41), as well as the striking Jumeirah at Etihad Towers (p47). If you're looking for a wardrobe overhaul, the Weekend Max Mara - Summer Breeze collection will tick all the boxes in July's Fashion Focus (p63). Now that the Abu Dhabi food scene is back in business, you've got SO MANY great places to dine in the capital. Our Culinary Spotlight is the fantastic Butcher & Still (p73) and the Foodie Corner takes us to Cipriani Yas Island (p77). We've also got your monthly fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment fix. This summer the fun is set to be limitless and I can't think of a better time of the year during which you can make new memories and stories (not the Insta kind – the REAL kind). So, why not spend lazy days by the pool, read a new novel or book that special staycation. I wish you all a wonderful summer ahead and I'll catch up with you in September! ☺

CHEF ANTONIO CHIRIELEISON: POLIPO ARROSTITO
“As a kid, I watched my grandmother and mother wake up early every Sunday to prepare our infamous feasts. Sunday to us was a big gathering of all the loved ones to enjoy each other’s company and the genuine flavours of homemade recipes. I watched as my mum put on her white cooking outfit and covered her hair to start the art of making pasta from scratch. I watched as she made the dough, stretched and cut it into identical sizes and rolled it into perfection. On the other side of the kitchen, my grandmother was always busy making her traditional three meat sauce with tomatoes. My grandmother chose the meat personally piece by piece and marinated it with fresh tomatoes, basil, oregano and bay leaves, from our little garden at the back of the house. The meat was cooked upon our original “Economic Oven” as we called it, which was fired with wood. The meat and sauce were cooked for five to six hours on a steady fire to ensure that it is tender and the meat absorbs the flavour of the tomato and the herbs.”
METHOD: 1. To make the puree di patate, boil the potatoes, peel them and pass them through a strainer while still hot. Then add the salt, pepper, butter, milk and mix thoroughly.
INGREDIENTS (PUREE DI PATATE):

3. Place the octopus in a bowl and cool it down with ice water. 4. Cut the octopus into portions of 140g each and season with olive oil and pepper.
5. Heat a pan, add the octopus and sear it on all sides. 6. Reheat the mashed potatoes and arrange it on a plate. Place the octopus on top and garnish with breadcrumbs roasted with a little bit of garlic oil, salt, pepper, sun-dried tomatoes and some basil on top.

octopus in hot water with the celery, black pepper, white onion and a bit of white vinegar for one hour and 40 minutes.

CHEF EMAD ZALLOUM: FATTOUSH SALAD
"Being from the high mountains of Lebanon, I grew up enjoying the freshness of the Hasbaya Valley and its simplicity, yet it has a magical feel and I'll always remember the smell of olive and pine trees. I fell in love with cooking while I was helping my mum pick herbs and vegetables from our garden, which is surrounded by thyme, oregano, mint, Rocca leaves and many other species. In October 2012, I decided to move to the beautiful city of Abu Dhabi and I've been based at Rosewood Abu Dhabi since. I have successfully launched Sambusek, the hotels' signature Lebanese restaurant, and overlook the Arabic cuisines all over the hotel, from in-room dining dishes, outdoor catering, meetings and events or even brunch. It's a passion; it's a challenge, its creativity, more than a job."
METHOD: 1. Open up the pita bread and spread za'atar powder and a bit of olive oil on the inside.
2. Roll the bread and cut it into rings, then bake it in the oven for 25 minutes at 180 degrees.
3. Cut
the lettuce, tomato and cucumber into medium size cubes.
4. Slice the radish and onion. 5. In
a bowl, add the cut vegetables and mix them with mint leaves, za'atar leaves and watercress leaves.
INGREDIENTS 1pc heart of Romaine lettuce 3 pcs local tomatoes 4pcs cucumbers 1pc head of white onion 4pcs red radishes 1 cup of fresh mint leaves 1 cup of watercress 1 cup of za'atar leaves 1 cup of lemon juice 1 cup of olive oil 1 cup of pomegranate molasses 1 spoon of sumac powder 1 spoon of za'atar powder 1 small spoon of salt 2 loaves of pita bread
6. Add
the sumac powder, za'atar powder, lemon juice, pomegranate molasses and olive oil and then mix it all together.
7. Serve the salad in a deep bowl, and add the baked pita bread on the top.

he sense of tranquility is almost immediate as we pull up the cobbled driveway and enter into the lobby of The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa. Bathed in natural light, our eyes slowly rise skywards taking in the focal atrium and the verdant greens of the golf course that is visible through the large glass windows. Off to the left lies a quaint and relaxing cafe called The Lounge and to the right is the reception and check-in area. Westin Abu Dhabi is a picturesque five-star golf and spa resort located in Abu Dhabi, and despite it's proximity to the city centre, the expansive property feels like an escape from the city. A place that provides beautiful views to match the exciting hotel amenities such as the championship golf course upon which the hotel is situated. Health and safety precautions were a priority throughout our stay. Aside from the expected mask and gloves the procedures that have been put in place include self-parking, protective screens and sterilised pens at the reception counters, and safety seals on hotel room doors to indicate that the rooms have been thoroughly sterilised and that no one has entered since the cleaning process was undertaken. We felt extremely confident with the efforts put in place by Marriott and the entire team at the Westin Abu Dhabi and it's evident that the safety of both customers and guests is of paramount importance for the operation at this time.
THE SUITE LIFE: A summer escape amongst the vibrant fairways of Abu Dhabi Golf Club provides the perfect respite from the heat and the sounds of bird song and chirping insects make us immediately forget that we are mere minutes from the city. This notion of an 'oasis of calm' extends into the bedrooms, which are very spacious, peaceful and abound with natural light. We check-in to a one-bedroom Executive Suite with 1.5 bathrooms, sweeping golf course views and a large balcony which is the perfect spot for a midmorning coffee or as a place to top up the tan. The spot was so delightful in fact that we opted to forego our breakfast in Fairways and instead dine on the balcony, watching the golfers tee off while enjoying the early morning atmosphere. The 95 SQM suite is separated into living and dining areas which put comfort and convince first. A refrigerator, flat-screen television, small sink and ample storage space means that guests can unpack quickly and enjoy all of the benefits of such an appealing space. The suite is beautifully appointed with a comfortable king bed that provided us with admittedly the deepest nights sleep we'd had for 42

some time (we think it may have been due to the buoyant pillows and super comfortable mattress and duvet combination). The suite also featured tea and coffee making facilities (hooray for morning caffeination), a dressing room and a free-standing bathtub that we may have soaked in for a little longer than we'd care to admit! A control panel next to the bed allows for seamless control of lighting and temperature settings, as well as the ability to place the do not disturb and the make-up room signage. If you want to lock yourself away in complete privacy, then this goal is easily attainable. Boasting a dining repertoire of six food and beverage outlets, The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa has long been a popular haunt for residents of Khalifa City and the neighbourhoods along Al Raha Beach. It's easy to see why, as not only are there a variety of cuisines represented, but the service is exemplary. Throughout our 24 hours in the property, we were continually greeted with smiles, laughter and genuine empathy from the team.
DEBONAIRE DINING: An early dinner reservation at Sacci results in an almost full restaurant, which is bursting with atmosphere as families venture out for a post-pandemic weekend meal. The familystyle trattoria is a venue that channels childhood nostalgia and the aroma and flavours of traditional Italian dishes. We indulge in several classically prepared dishes including the Tartare di Tonno Agli Agrumi, a perfect summer dish of tuna tartare, citrus fruits and candied walnuts that hits the perfect balance between sweet and tart, and the Risotto con Pere, Radicchio e Gorgonzola - a risotto with a striking purple colouration, enhanced by the inclusion of pear pieces and Gorgonzola cheese. Unable to resist the classically prepared Italian desserts, we gleefully save room for the signature Sacci Tiramisu with its lashing of cream and generous proportions of chocolate. We couldn't resist the quintessentially British tradition of afternoon tea before we departed the luxurious property and found ourselves in an inspiring setting, surrounded by views of the lush Abu Dhabi Golf course. The multi-tiered afternoon tea stand featured a specially curated savoury selection of sandwiches with exciting flavours such as cucumber and cumin cream and the classic smoked salmon on rye. For those with a sweet tooth, there is opera cake, lemon crèmeux with pineapple caviar, a matcha tea tartlet with banana and passionfruit and our personal favourite, the freshly baked scones with jam and clotted cream. Accompanied by unlimited hot beverages, this is the perfect way to while away a few hours on a warm summer day with friends. The hotel is also home to The Retreat, a good choice for pub grub and to watch the latest sporting fixtures. Fairways is the hotel's all-day dining restaurant with culinary influences from Arabia, Asia and the Mediterranean's northern shore. Lemon & Lime offers dinner and drinks in a laid-back, luxurious setting and Shades Pool Bar is a tropical-themed bar at the hotel pool area.

Speaking of exercise, the onsite WestinWorkout room offers a good selection of cardiovascular equipment and free weights for guest use. The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa is an essential part of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club experience which is home to the HSBC Golf Championship and the 27-hole championship golf course weaves through undulating terrain featuring pockets of palms, as well as seven spectacular saltwater lakes. E
tihad Towers should require very little introduction to residents and visitors to the UAE capital. The glass structures can be seen on fridge magnets, postcards and memorabilia throughout the city and the architectural marvel has become not only an iconic part of the Abu Dhabi skyline but a tourist attraction in its own right. Comprising of five slender towers rising from the ground like shards of glass, the majestic building penetrates the skyline for all to see. More than just a five-star hotel and residential complex, this lifestyle destination saw Hollywood superstars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker jump a Lykan HyperSport supercar between the towers in the 2015 movie Fast & Furious 7, cementing the structure into movie history. The stunt may be memorable but perhaps not as impressive as Jumeirah at Etihad Towers itself. The luxury hotel can be found within one of the glittering skyscrapers and is home to 382 rooms and suites, an elegant spa, private beach and a selection of 12 eclectic restaurants. The property is without a doubt one of the most luxurious hotels in Abu Dhabi. Situated on the upper level of a spiralled podium, the design is one that exudes elegance and class. Think deep carpets, gold embroidery and gurgling water features, though it's the five spherical lamps punctuating the lobby that are most likely to to be remembered. 48

A HAVEN OF REFINED LUXURY Our Deluxe King Room is located on the 44th floor of the hotel and we are immediately wowed by the impressive view from the floor-to-ceiling windows. All rooms at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers offer either cityscape or sea views and we were more than happy with the latter, as we could gaze along the Abu Dhabi Corniche, from Qasr Al Watan to the World Trade Centre. Taking in Marina Village, Al Lulu Island and the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf without having to get up from the bed. Rooms are comfortable and stylish, offering chic interiors to complement those majestic views. The spaces have clearly been designed for relaxation, whether that be after a business meeting or a day relaxing at the beach. Aside from the large king bed, with its fluffy pillows and a delightful duvet that made it hard for us to get out of bed each morning, the room also featured remotecontrolled curtains and lights, a 42-inch widescreen interactive HD LED TV and complimentary wi-fi access. Meaning we could stream Netflix and post on Instagram until our hearts were content. Clocking in a generous 50sqm the Deluxe Rooms at Jumeriah at Etihad Towers put convenience first. A handy connectivity hub allowed us to quickly hook up our various devices with ease, so we could play music via the in-room speakers and watch movies from our laptop on the TV. An inviting chaise longue made for the perfect reading and napping area, come late afternoon when the sunlight hits just right. A bathroom with a separate shower area is more luxurious than one might expect, clad in marble and featuring detailed mosaic tiling in gold and silver. It's this sense of luxury combined with attention to detail that makes a stay at any Jumeirah property memorable. With toiletry bottles shaped like the towers themselves and special bath products, toys and slippers for those travelling with little ones. It's as if no detail has been overlooked in planning the guest experience. All bathrooms contain double sinks and a deep tub that is perfect for a long soak. A set of draws marked with a moustache (for him) and a lipstick (for her) contain several products that you may have left at home, such as mouthwash, toothbrushes, cotton buds and nail files. Again, emphasising that convenience and comfort are key to a stay at Jumeirah. Just wait until you experience the turndown service! fact magazine

LOBBY LOUNGING The lobby lounge offers a meeting point in the centre of the hotel. Bathed in natural light, the space acts as a hub for both guests and visitors and offers picturesque views of the ocean and private beachfront. The comfortable leather seating makes for an excellent option to spend an afternoon, whether it's drinks, lunch or a light snack you're after. The lobby lounge has garnered quite the reputation for having one of the best afternoon teas in town and we're inclined to agree. A range of hot beverages are offered, accompanied by a pleasing selection of savoury sandwiches showcasing premium ingredients such as crab in the form of a tartine and a superb smoked salmon and avocado wrap. The cakes and pastries are just as dainty and help to add to that air of sophistication associated with the Jumeirah brand, known for providing high levels of luxury and bespoke experiences. Delights range from the classic Paris-Brest to the fruity Strawberry Tart and the decadently the moist Chocolate Cake. The presentation in a quaint pink box compliments the entire afternoon tea experience.
BACK AT BRUNCH BiCE is the hotel's Italian restaurant and is a dining destination in itself, combining the authenticity of Italian cuisine with comfortable family-friendly dining. Seating is available either inside the spacious dining room or out on the terrace. Our weekend stay conveniently coincided with the launch of a new brunch that was too good an opportunity to pass up. A succinct menu is presented to the table from which you can select several antipasti dishes, pasta, main courses and desserts. The result is a leisurely afternoon of Italian classics combined with a good selection of beverages. We urge you not to resist the Fresh Burrata, Trofie al Pesto Rosso pasta or the indulgent tiramisu, which had us almost rolling back to our room. 50

REST, RELAXATION AND RECREATION One of the advantages of a summer staycation in the UAE is the ability to relax at the beach without having to hop on a flight. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers boasts pristine pools and a pleasant section of private beachfront. We spent much of our stay lazing by the water's edge and topping up our tan on a swathe of golden sand that wraps around the base of the glistening glass towers. Even with social distancing measures in place, there are still more than enough sun loungers to go around and the warm shallow waters are perfect for little ones. There's a small pontoon that you can swim out to and plenty of opportunities for splashing about in the water. Whether you're an in-house guest or just looking for some relaxation time using one of the day passes for the beach, the private beachfront offers intimacy and exclusivity, unlike anywhere else in the capital. At the time of writing the three swimming pools, spa and a number of restaurants remain closed in line with government measures pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, with things changing almost daily, we hope that the remainder of the facilities will be up and running again soon. Even with things in a constantly changing state of flux, the team at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers are excited to welcome guests and continue to display their standard-setting levels of service. Whether visiting for business, leisure or familytime, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers has all of the bases covered. Chromatica
By Lady Gaga
Her past work already earned 11 Grammys and three nominations for “Album of the Year”. Now Lady Gaga’s sixth album returns to the dance floor and although we are currently living in a post-nightclub world, the fusion of electro dance-funk and pop is just perfect for kitchen-floor dance parties. Chromatica offers furious earworms like Alice, liberating bangers like Free Woman, and truly unexpected guest appearances like Elton John on Sine From Above. Speaking of guest appearances, album hit Rain on Me is a perfect example of a collaboration gone extremely right. Although already the incredible dance-disco production and uplifting songwriting make the song great, it’s the unmatched chemistry between Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga that makes it one of Gaga's best. In Chromatica, Lady Gaga not only embraces the dance pop that once made her a global superstar overnight, but twists it, splits it, and reforms it as something else entirely. With thrilling production throughout and some exceedingly personal songwriting, Chromatica is designed to leave the listener wanting more.

Being a young man who has recently moved from New York to Los Angeles in search of a fresh start, Sam considers how this shaman could help to cure his anxiety and depression. When Sam is pushed to confront the ghosts that lurk in his memory, he realizes that the shaman is digging deeper than he originally anticipated. A powerful story about owning who you are, finding the ability to fully love yourself, and unraveling all the reasons you do what you do to sabotage your life, consciously and unconsciously.

• Q&A
THE PERFECT CANDIDATE FACT talks to Haifaa Al Mansour, the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia, about her inspirations, work ethic and her Oscar nominated film The Perfect Candidate. How does it feel to have directed your debut film Wadjda, the first-ever film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first made by a Saudi woman? My main motivation in making Wadjda was to make an inspiring film that was not about how women in Saudi Arabia are victims as much as how they can be leaders of change. That is still my goal as I continue to make movies about strong women around the world. I hope it had that impact, and I hope that films from the region continue to encourage positive development in the society. Cinema will have a huge impact on public life in Saudi Arabia. The shared experience of watching a film in a public place, of feeling the story along with a theatre full of people, is such a positive and joyous experience that Saudis will finally get to enjoy in their home country. It is an important step for the country and lays the groundwork for so much positive change. Cinema is an incredible platform for a society, to ease in ideas of tolerance and acceptance, and allow local audiences to connect with the outside world and better understand us. What was it about the story of The Perfect Candidate that encouraged your return to Saudi Arabia, to make the film? There are incredible changes taking place right now at home in Saudi Arabia, and I felt like I really wanted to contribute to the positive changes taking place there. We went through such a long period of time where nothing changed, where it seemed like even the slightest openings or relaxations of the cultural restraints, we lived under seemed impossible. But now the pace of change is so fast that it is hard to keep up with, and the challenge now is to encourage people to go out and make the most of the opportunities they have. Especially for women, it will take a huge shift in thinking to fully understand and embrace the freedoms they now have the chance to explore. The narrative is a deeply human one and one that we can all relate to, how important was it for you to tell this particular story? For this film in particular, I wanted to tell a story about a culturally conservative, traditional woman who decides to embrace the changes that are taking place and go out there and seize the moment in public. The reality of her journey, of stepping out of this very private world and into the public sphere, is that it will be difficult, and lots of people will be critical of her choices, but it will ultimately open up a whole new world for her. I want to stress to the women how important it is to go out there and take a chance, even if you don't have any experience in doing so. I also wanted to take a moment to celebrate the strong artistic and cultural legacy of Saudi Arabia and tell a story that stresses how important it is that we build upon those traditions as the foundation for our societies development. So much of our music, theatre, 56

stories, and all forms of artistic expression were almost erased from our culture entirely, so I felt like we needed a story that reminded people of the strong artistic traditions we have, and how they can help us as we move forward into an exciting future. Are there any autobiographical elements in The Perfect Candidate? I share a lot of Mariam's determination, and a desire to just do my job the best I can. I guess I am kind of crazy in the same way, in that I just go after the things I believe are right and push on the best I can. But I also feel very close to the father's character in the film, as I feel strongly that now is the time to honour the sacrifices and commitment that artists and musicians made to keep our artistic culture alive over the past few decades. They faced a lot of criticism and very limited opportunities for so long, so I really felt proud to honour all of the musicians in the film and give them a platform for their music to be heard. It was really amazing to shoot the concert scenes and to see all of the extras dancing and enjoying the music. It was very special for me. From the lack of resources at her clinic to her surprise run for office at the local elections. The character of Maryam shows unwavering resilience throughout the film. How important was it for you to have a strong female lead? Through my films, I always focus on female protagonists who want to work hard and do their job to the best of their abilities. For this film, I wanted to create a character that is very much representative of the mainstream mentality of Saudi women. She covers her face and follows the cultural norms of the society, but ends up pushing boundaries because she wants to do her job well. The restrictions that keep her from performing her work in the ways that would best benefit the society frustrate her and force her to think
Q&A • To be recognised by my peers here at home and celebrated as a representative of artists from the Kingdom, is incredibly important to me. I am also very proud that The Perfect Candidate was selected into the main competition at the Venice Film Festival. It is so validating to have the film placed in the same category as the most prestigious films from across the world. It is definitely one of my favourite festivals in the world! It's also very exciting that audiences in the Middle East can now watch the film from the comfort of their own home through OSN Store and OSN streaming. You are seen as a trailblazer for Saudi cinema. Do you see the potential for a thriving film scene in the Kingdom and is a new wave of Saudi films on the way? Absolutely! I am very confident that we will build up our own, vibrant local film industry, and that we will have local audiences eager to see and consume our work. But I also hope that we see our films start to travel more around the world so that international audiences get to hear from us and get a better sense of our perspective. We have had so few chances to present our work and our point of view to the rest of the world, so I think film, and the arts in general, will become a very valuable tool for us in telling our side of the story.
outside the box. She is not a rebel for the sake of rebellion, she is someone that knows that her work can make the country a better place and simply wants to remove the barriers that keep her from accomplishing her mission. I believe strongly that this is the way that true change comes to a society, through hard-working people who simply want to be able to reach their highest potential. The film presents an almost documentary style in the way it was shot, drawing the viewer into the life of Maryam and her family. Was this a purposeful decision, or was it based more upon budgetary constraints? I definitely wanted to make the film feel "real" and present a realistic look into Saudi life. It is rare that we get to see ourselves on screen in a documentary-like way, so I work hard to make it as authentic as possible. Showing this story in this way is the key to getting that message across. The Perfect Candidate was selected as the Saudi Arabian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. What was your reaction to the news? It was incredibly moving and important for me. It's a huge honour!
What are the challenges of filming in Saudi Arabia? Well, a lot has changed since I made my first Saudi film! It was incredibly difficult to make a film in 2011, and people were still very hesitant to embrace any public form of artistic expression at that time. Film was especially seen as taboo, and the idea of opening theatre's had become a red line that most of us thought would never be crossed. Of course, now everything is different, and we have cinemas going up all across the Kingdom. But the larger issue of a lack of infrastructure in the film industry remains. We have a lot of work to do in building up the tools and resources necessary to make quality films. We don't have many people with experience in the field yet so putting together a crew and getting the right equipment is very difficult. Getting the proper training and education necessary to help craft and shape our stories is another key area that we need to develop. It is still a very challenging place to work, and a very closed, insular society, so it was a tough but worthwhile journey. And it was really great to be out of the van! Being allowed to fully mix with my crew and be fully immersed in the production was amazing. It was also very exciting to have so many enthusiastic young Saudis working on the set. They are the future of the industry, and to see them giving their all to contribute and be a part of making the film was very special for me. We still have a long way to go in building our local crews and expertise, but the enthusiasm is there to build upon. It is an exciting time to be a filmmaker from Saudi Arabia! ✤

O
If there is one really good thing happening this year, then it’s the launch of the new PlayStation 5. From design to confirmed features, here’s everything you can expect…
k, where shall we begin? First up, the PS5 is rocking an AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom RDNA 2 AMD GPU that puts out 10.28 TFLOPs of processing power. But for everyone who does not speak the language, here are some juicier key facts: The next-generation console actually comes with two versions: one with an optical disc drive and one 'Digital Edition' that does without it. As for the design, it’s safe to say that the 5th generation console really stands out with a completely different look and space-age black-and-white colour scheme. Also, a number of new accessories have been revealed: A new Pulse 3D wireless headset, a DualSense Charging Station in which you can dock two controllers at once, and a HD Camera that mimics the look of the console itself. The PS5 will also be compatible with current PSVR hardware, and there are also rumours of PSVR 2, so get ready for PS5 to have a VR option! If you’re wondering which games you can play on the new PS5, let us tell you that there are a lot of options! They include a new

Spider-man entry, a Horizon Zero Dawn se-quel, a Demon’s Souls remake, Resident Evil 8 and many more to be announced. Now another important question PS-fans will have: Can we play PS4 games on the PS5? The answer is yes! The PS5 will definitely be backwards compatible with “almost all” PS4 games. However, just as exciting as the PS5 specs is the new controller. The Du-alSense PS5 controller comes with the same stylish look as the console. But beyond the design, it’s a slew of impressivesounding features that marks a significant depar-ture from its predecessors: Wireless controlling, adaptive shoulder button triggers with haptic feedback, and a built-in microphone — now you can talk to friends with-out having to wear a headset. All in all, it looks like the new-generation console will bring play with no limits, and Sony officially confirmed the rough release date to be Q4 2020 — so you better start saving. ✤

s fortunate as we at FACT magazine have been when it comes to test driving the finest motorcars on the market, we have not been fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a Subaru. That is, until now. Producing models since the 1950’s, this Japanese brand has not only proven itself on the roads but has excelled in the World Rally Championships, having won a total of five World Rally titles. As the streamlined figure of the WRX came into full view, we were immediately impressed by the sporty and sleek nature of the exterior. The most eye-catching of all external features has to be the large hood scoop that would make this car look at home on a racing track. This feature helps to cool down the engine and keep the car functioning at full performance. Additional noteworthy frontal features include the LED headlamps with Auto-leveliser as well as LED front fog lamps. Moving to the flanks, the lines and curves of the body seem to flow effortlessly from front to rear, with 18-inch aluminiumalloy wheels and side sill spoilers hinting at the WRX’s on road capabilities. At the back end, LED rear fog lamps, a twin dual exhaust system and a rear lip spoiler all add to the prowess of the vehicle. On the roof, a power-sliding, tilt-adjustable, glass sunroof, as well as carrier installation brackets, add to the comfort and functionality of this model. Slipping inside the cabin, we were greeted by the comfort of the front sport seats complete with fancy red stitching. The driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable with lumbar support and provides a commanding driving position. The striking red stitching continues on the tilt-adjustable, leather sports steering wheel that felt great in hand. All of the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout the vehicle are of a highquality and the overall space is well-designed and functional. With plenty of head, shoulder and legroom in both the front and the rear seating, five adults fit inside comfortably. The boot offers 460-litres of storage space, a capacity that is significantly increased when the rear seats are folded flat. The Infotainment apparatus includes a 7-inch display as well as a six-speaker audio system. This setup includes voice recognition and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Audio remote control switches are conveniently mounted on the steering wheel and both dual USB ports and auxiliary audio input jack are located on the centre panel. A dual gage layout is present on the dashboard with a 3.5inch full-colour LCD display. We found this setup to be both functional and user-friendly, adding to an already satisfying experience. Finally, it was time to get the WRX out onto the tarmac and we were all smiles as the horizontally opposed, 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, turbocharged, Boxer petrol engine roared to life. With a 1998 cc capacity, a maximum output of 197 kW at 5600 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 2400 to 5200 rpm, this automatic vehicle can shoot from 0 – 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and offers a top speed of 240 km/h. The WRX houses various systems and control features to improve driving performance, including Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive), a Variable Torque Distribution All-Wheel Drive System, a Multi-mode Vehicle

Dynamics Control System and Adaptive Cruise Control to name but a few. This translates to a car with great handling, cornering ability, acceleration and braking. In fact, we have to say that this Subaru model is amongst the most enjoyable vehicles we have ever had the privilege of test driving. When it comes to safety, the designers at Subaru have included a host of features to ensure you and your family’s wellbeing. These features include a multitude of SRS airbags throughout the vehicle, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, High Beam Assist, whiplash reducing front seats, a 4-wheel Antilock Braking System, a Brake Assist System, an Emergency Break Stop Signal, ISO-FIX Adapted Child Seat Anchors, Child-proof Rear Door Locks as well as an engine Immobiliser. In truth, the only feature we felt was missing from this impressive array was the frontal camera, a minor detail when considering everything else on offer. In closing, we found the Subaru WRX to be a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing, high-performance, safe and functional vehicle that was extremely fun to drive. ✤

T
he last few months have been a whirlwind of emotions and experiences with the world gripped by a global pandemic. While we're rightfully fed up with hearing phrases such as "unprecedented times" there is little doubt that these descriptors accurately summarise the current situation we find ourselves living in. After a two-month hiatus, the hospitality industry in the UAE capital is once again open for business, so armed with our masks and gloves and following all government precautions we ventured out for an early dinner to experience "the new normal." Butcher and Still represents a unique entity in a city that is bursting with restaurant options. The popular steakhouse has built its reputation on charismatic service, premium ingredients, and the ability to enamour guests from the moment they enter. Much of the restaurant's charm derives from how guests are transported into another era as soon as they cross the threshold, making them immediately forget they're in Abu Dhabi. Things are no different in a post-COVID world and the restaurant remains largely unchanged except for the social distancing stickers on the floor, which indicate that a distance of two meters must be maintained at all times. Hand sanitisers stand at the ready and the Butcher & Still team are fully kitted out in protective masks and gloves. It's an unusual feeling but one that soon passes. With reduced capacity meaning that only 30 percent of the restaurant space can be occupied at one time and no more than four guests can be seated at a table, dining has been restricted to just three hours per visit. Thankfully this is more than enough time to sink our teeth into some sumptuous steaks and signature dishes. Presenting a modern interpretation of the 1920s prohibition-era Chicago steakhouse, Butcher and Still is precisely what you'd expect from a haven to all things meat. An abundance of dark wood, retro-inspired decor and distressed leather banquettes, make for an intimate and inviting venue. Yet it's the small touches, such as the bullet casings embedded into the grout in the bathroom stalls or the meat cleavers included in the cutlery that add character and lasting appeal to this specific steakhouse. We begin in the bar, which offers impressive views across the water to the sparkling lights of downtown Abu Dhabi and is an ideal spot for sundowners. Even on a sleepy Sunday evening, a notoriously quiet night on the Abu Dhabi dining scene, Butcher & Still is buzzing with the after-work crowd. A concise menu focusing on quality cuts is the main draw and although the Ă la carte pricing is as expected, there are several promotions to entice those in search of value for money. All meals at Butcher & Still begin with a loaf of warm truffle bread that is as moreish and addictive as it sounds and leads the way for the appetisers. The selection comprises of several reinterpreted steakhouse classics, such as Prime Angus Steak Tartare and U-6 Gulf Prawns Cocktail. Under the guidance of the charismatic Chef Marshall Roth, we are enticed into trying the 99% Lump Crab Cake and the Bone Marrow, both of which transpire to be winning dishes. The crab cake comprises an abundance of crab meat and is not bulked out with the usual potato. Instead, the delicate and flavoursome crab is bound together with scallop, Remoulade sauce and lemon. The bone marrow is soft, rich and

quite literally melts in the mouth. Butcher & Still's main course selection revolves around steaks, chops and some signature dishes but we can't help but be drawn to some of the more obscure choices. The Ice Burger offers a beautifully cooked patty of duck fat house-ground beef accompanied by shoestring fries. Still, as the name suggests, the bun has been replaced with chunks of iceberg lettuce which is both unique and visually appealing. The Bone-In New York Strip proves to be an excellent cut that is full flavoured, tender and moist, especially when cooked at our preferred medium-rare temperature. The prime cut is generously portioned at a weight of 550g and marks another advantage of dining at Butcher & Still, where the dishes are designed to be shared and appreciated. Desserts were probably not required on this occasion. Still, we couldn't resist the all-American choices such as the Cherry Pie La Mode and the Tribune Tower which has been classified as a 'master dish' by the Four Seasons brand. An impressive dessert comprising of 34 layers of chocolate cake and ganache that is inspired by the iconic Tribune Tower (Chicago's tallest skyscraper

in the 1920's). The cherry pie is a fruity delight and provides a real taste of Americana, using both fresh and canned cherries to give an undulating texture and a sweetness that is so hard to replicate. Even with mouths covered by masks and gloves making silver service tricky, the front of house team were outstanding and have adapted admirably to the new dining guidelines. Service is knowledgeable, friendly and engaging and each time we dine, it feels like we've returned home. Butcher & Still remains consistent and sets the bar for steakhouses in Abu Dhabi. The restaurant continues to impress on repeat visits and stands out as the leader of the pack in a repertoire of reliable food and beverage offerings at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island. No easy feat considering the hotel is also home to upmarket Italian eatery Cafe Milano, stylish pool bar Eclipse and sophisticated lounge Zsa Zsa. ✤

t has been some time since our last visit to Cipriani Yas Island, the expansive Italian restaurant perched above the picturesque waters of Yas Marina and a venue that is clearly one of the most admired in the UAE capital. Ascending the winding stairway that leads into the restaurant space we are greeted with a friendly "Ciao" before being led to a glorious table close to the floor to ceiling windows that flank the dining room and afford impressive views of the marina, where luxury yachts bob hypnotically on the water. Crisp white table linens and impeccably placed cutlery exemplify the grandeur of the Cipriani dining experience, representative of fine dining at its very best. The expansive dining room gives the impression of dining on a yacht thanks to an abundance of glossy wood, blue upholstery, leather seats and grand mirrors, providing the restaurant with a nautical theme and one that feels undeniably classic. The dining tables wrap effortlessly around the central bar area, while at the figurative helm lies a sushi counter where fresh fish is sliced and prepared with impeccable precision. Available year-round, Cipriani Yas Island's Ă la carte menu has been built upon the concept of simple Italian food executed to perfection by a team of Italian chefs. Using a combination of local ingredients and premium products imported directly from Italy; everything from the pasta to the impressive desserts is made fresh daily in the Cipriani kitchen, adding authenticity to the menu. Appealing to different tastes is key to the Cipriani experience and you'll notice that the menu is divided into two distinct cuisines, with the left page offering exquisite Japanese choices and the right page dedicated to the Italian fare for which Cipriani has become synonymous. No matter which cuisine you decide upon, you're unlikely to be disappointed or do as we did and try them both. We begin with a surprise amuse-bouche of Chicken Croquettes, which transpire to be the perfect precursor for the meal ahead. The golden parcels are beautifully rich in flavour and undeniably moreish, acting as the ideal accompaniment for one of the choices from the expansive beverage menu. While we wouldn't usually discuss the bread selection in one of our food reviews, the conical-shaped pastries that grace our side plate on this occasion deserve more than a passing mention. Light and buttery layers in the dough provide perfect lamination and are characteristic of a croissant, and we admirably resist the urge to devour more than one. The appetisers provide an appealing selection of Italian favourites. While our eyes are immediately drawn to the Burrata and the King Crab, we decide to stray from what would be our usual choices and explore the menu more thoroughly. Opting for the Asparagus "alla Parmigiana" and the Carpaccio "alla Cipriani" we are more than a little delighted with our choices. The asparagus dish is ideal for vegetarians and offers a generous portion of vibrant green asparagus spears adorned with Parmesan cheese. At the same time, the thin slices of carpaccio are complemented by a spicy mayonnaise and simple green salad that allow the quality of the produce to shine through. A plate of the Crunch Maki is also presented to the table so that we may indulge in the Asian side of the menu. The eight pieces of sushi comprise of crisp prawn tempura, yamagobo (a pickled 78

Japanese root) and cool avocado. Presented amongst flowers carved from carrots, the execution is just as impressive as the European specialities, and it's pleasing to see both cuisines represented so strongly at Cipriani. With main courses drawing inspiration from classic dishes such as lamb chops, grilled salmon, black cod, Wagyu ribeye and chicken teriyaki. We have our hearts set on pasta and opt for the Homemade Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli with Butter and Sage and Spaghetti with Seafood and "Datterino" Tomatoes. The artistry in the creation of the pasta is immediately evident and the portions more than generous, with the stuffed ravioli boasting beautiful aromatics from the daintily produced parcels. The spaghetti is a revelation that perfectly balances the sweetness of the Datterino tomatoes with a slight heat and an abundance of tender lobster, shrimp and fish pieces. The al dente nature of the pasta provides the ideal texture, and the dish exemplifies the ethos of Cipriani to provide simple Italian dishes made from premium produce. While the meal is undoubtedly hearty, there's always room for

dessert and espresso, and the desserts at Cipriani are not to be missed! All of the desserts are presented to the table in their entirety. Hence, you can feast your eyes upon the chocolate cake, mille feuilles and lemons tarts before making your selection. Having spotted the Vanilla Meringue on Instagram before visiting, we knew we had to order it, and upon recommendation from the Cipriani team we also select the Vanilla Ice Cream freshly whipped "a la minute." Both dishes live up the hype, with the Vanilla Meringue comprising of a light sponge slathered in Italian meringue that is glossy, marshmallow-like in texture and utterly indulgent. The ice cream, while far less restrained is no less delicious. Offering a smooth texture thanks to the fact that it was created mere moments before it's presentation to the table, add a sprinkling of chocolate sauce and candied nuts and you have dessert perfection. Dining at Cipriani Yas Island has always been a special occasion venue that ticks the boxes when it comes to food, drinks, atmosphere and service. The Cipriani team are well versed in the menu and become the "captains" of our meal. Dressed in white jackets, they are very dapper and profoundly proficient, helping us to navigate the menu and beverage list while accentuating the remarkable dining experience. With a stunning outdoor terrace that wraps around the building and provides elevated trackside views, there's no wonder Cipriani Yas Island is one of the most in-demand dining destinations in the city and one where guests feel welcome and at home. ✤

THE ULTIMATE AT-HOME FACIAL Five top tips from Skin Republic for a salon-worthy facial at home. While we are all home safe, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to an at-home facial. So, put on your fluffiest robe, light a scented candle and get ready for glowing bouncy skin.
Step 3: Skin the extractions Just don’t do it. Picking and squeezing can lead to permanent scars, so skip the extractions and consult a professional.
Step 1: Double Cleanse It’s essential to remove all traces of make-up so your skin can absorb ingredients more efficiently. If you’re skipping on makeup at the moment, you should still cleanse to remove any oil build up from the day. First, cleanse with an oil-based make-up remover followed by a cream (if your skin is dry) or a foam-based cleanser (if your skin is on the oily side). Focus on the areas where you experience breakouts and get into those nooks and crannies. Make sure you get a nice lather going and rinse off thoroughly.
Step 4: Mask it Now that your skin is squeaky clean and super-soft, it’s time to put back the moisture. Skin Republic Sheet Masks are saturated with 25ml of serum, making them super-hydrating. There is also enough serum to apply to your neck and décolletage – which we often forget to do. Apply the mask and relax for 15 minutes. To help ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin or to improve skin firmness, you can give yourself a facial massage. If your skin requires a little more hydration, you can apply your regular moisturiser after the mask.
Step 2: Exfoliate Too much and your skin can be left sore and inflamed, too little and your skin feels congested and dry. It’s best to exfoliate a maximum of twice per week. For serious exfoliation, try the Skin Republic 24K Gold Peel-Off Face Mask. This mask dries and becomes tight, removing dirt, oil and dead skin cells as it is peeled off. Many dry skin sufferers avoid exfoliants as they feel it will make their skin more dehydrated but skipping on exfoliating can make your skin drier. The dead, dry skin cells clog the upper layers of the skin, preventing ingredients from penetrating and hydrating. Exfoliation is also great for removing those rough, dry patches. 82

Step 5: The eye mask No facial would be complete without applying a hydrating undereye mask. Applied directly under the eye and worn for up to 20 minutes, eye masks provide a concentrated and continuous dose to the delicate under-eye area. ✤
