Would You Risk it For a Chocolate Biscuit?

Food is our common ground, a universal experience. – James Beard

R

emember being a kid and walking up to a vending machine? Your change was precious, so your decision to choose what to eat was a serious one. Crisps, chocolates, your favourite bottle of pop, and at some vending machines, you might even find gum and candy that was considered a REAL treat. My decision making process always came down to two things: what flavour is it? and is it packaged compact enough to not get stuck on the way down? This was it. In the pennies went and down dropped the bar of crunchie (my default choice). Much like this juvenile experience, as an adult, your palate is opened up to SO many choices. World cuisines from as far as Latin America to the exotic corners of Asia continue to infiltrate the dining scene in Abu Dhabi, and in this issue we wanted to spotlight some of the best. Turn to p25 for Epicurean Expedition, and check out some of the globe's most renowned dishes and types of food that play a major role in the UAE capital. Moreover, we tell you exactly where to go and try each one for yourself. There's everything from tacos to bbq, pizza and biryani - all that's left to do is take your pick! Back for its 5th edition, we announce the the final list of nominees for the annual FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi 2019. Hundreds of venues have made the cut and you can check out if your favourites are on the list from p53 onwards. The online voting form is now live and you have until the end of the month to cast your vote and make it count! Go to www.fact-magazine.com for all the details, and keep an eye on our social media platforms for exclusive foodie competitions in the lead up to the April ceremony. Staying on the delicious track to all things tasty, this month’s foodie features are an absolute treat. Our Culinary Spotlight takes place at the regal Shang Palace at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al-Beri, Abu Dhabi (p83), whilst the Venue Review takes an elegant turn at Sontaya, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort (p87). We've also rounded up some of the city's hottest dining deals and happenings for Mother's Day, International Women's Day and just a regular evening out - find all the info throughout the issue! Take it from me, every day is a new chance to tick off one more venue and one more cuisine from the long list of must-visit venues in Abu Dhabi. Go on, get started today...☺

The Misfits IN ANOTHER BIG REVEAL FOR ABU DHABI, JUMEIRAH AT ETIHAD TOWERS WAS ANNOUNCED AS THE FILM SHOOT LOCATION FOR HEIST MOVIE - THE MISFITS.

P

ierce Brosnan has signed on to star in the upcoming gold heist thriller The Misfits. Directed by action veteran Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Skip Trace), the project will begin shooting later this month in Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi. Brosnan has already been spotted out and about, enjoying the city's many cultural offerings such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi. "We are extremely excited to have him on board,” said Harlin. “Pierce and I have been friends for many years and have been looking for a project to collaborate on for some time. I could not have hoped for a better actor to play our lead.” Set mostly in the Middle East, The Misfits, scripted by Robert Henny, follows the story of renowned criminal Richard Pace, 8

who finds himself caught up in an elaborate gold heist that promises to have far-reaching implications. Jamie Chung and British actress Hermione Corfield will also appear in the film. The Misfits will be produced by Kia Jam (Sin City 2: A Dame to Die For) and Dean Altit (Realms) and executive produced by Prince Rami Al Husseini. Jam's Los Angeles-based film company K Jam Media is the lead production banner behind the project. "After visiting and scouting Abu Dhabi, we were blown away," said Jam. "We all agreed in order to do the film justice, production would have to take place primarily on location in Abu Dhabi rather than L.A., and we set up our base at the spectacular Jumeirah at Etihad Towers." Italian – Pizza Margherita

Japanese – Sushi

The margherita is a humble combination of dough, tomato sauce and cheese, and if cooked with good, fresh ingredients, it can prove a highly satisfying meal. Though the pizza all over Italy would be more than palate-pleasing, it’s actually the birthplace of the margherita – Naples – where you’ll find the most appetising choices. It was in 1889 when Chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi, created a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil), for Queen Margherita of Savoy, when she visited Naples. Since then, the modest pizza has grown into one of the most recognisable symbols of Italian food culture.

Sushi looks so simple and pretty, but it is in fact an intricate dish in terms of presentation and knowing which flavours work well together. One thing’s for sure though, sushi is causing a dramatic shift in dining habits the world-over. The nigiri and tuna rolls we eat today are a far cry from the pungent, rice-less, barrel-fermented stuff that originated in 3rd century B.C. Now we have pinwheel-shaped rainbow rolls and sushi masters trading their raw fish skills with culinary connoisseurs. Trying sushi in Japan is a must, but we have to say, this city does sushi and maki rolls, excellently.

British – Fish & Chips

Indian – Biryani

Definitely the most famous of all dishes in England. This great comfort food can be enjoyed as a greasy takeaway, traditionally wrapped in white paper, or in a more upscale environment at restaurants too. We recommend a trip up north to English counties like Lancashire or Yorkshire, where fish and chips is still the go-to dish and mostly enjoyed with a side of mushy peas, and this is also where you’ll find some of the best ‘chippies’ in the country to pick up your own bag of the hearty, hot dish. Here’s a tip – sprinkle a generous helping of salt and malt vinegar all over and tuck in!

By far India’s ultimate rice dish! Be it with chicken, lamb, prawns, or vegetables, this is a lavish dish that visitors to India absolutely need to try. It’s speculated that the Mughals introduced the modern biryani to India, which is made up of rice, a number of spices and condiments, and your chosen meat and/or vegetables. This is a rather sophisticated and skilled dish to prepare; you can make it pakki, meaning cooked, where the cooked meat and cooked rice are layered, or you can prepare biryani the kacchi way, where raw marinated meat is layered with raw rice before being cooked together. Our favourites include the mouthwatering Hyderabadi biryani and the super spicy Memoni biryani.

WHERE TO TRY IT:

COOPER’S BAR & RESTAURANT Park Rotana Abu Dhabi One of the most popular British bars in town, offering everything you need for a great night out. Live DJ entertainment, longest happy hour in town, daily ladies’ night, a live band and live broadcast of major games — Cooper’s has it all! Something else they do really well is a fine plate of fish and chips: crispy battered cod fillet with crushed peas and delicious tartare sauce – this is hearty pub-grub at its best. Traditionally styled with brass trimmed wooden panels, cobblestone walls and chequered floor tiles, Cooper’s is quintessentially British. An outdoor terrace is also available. Spanish – Paella

Tex-Mex – Fajita

Paella is to Spain as Elvis is to Rock and Roll; they were meant to be. Pronounced pah-yay-ah, this vibrant dish originates from the Valencia region and is traditionally prepared with rabbit and chicken, or seafood. The trick to a good paella is letting the base crisp into a luscious black crust called socarrat, which contrasts beautifully with the textures of yellow saffron rice and various meaty ingredients. Paella was originally farmers’ and farm labourers’ food, cooked by the workers over a wood fire for lunchtime. It was made with rice, plus whatever was to hand around the countryside like simple veggies and, occasionally, rabbit or duck, and on special occasions, chicken. Make sure you eat it straight out of the pan.

The fajita is no doubt the product of the ethnic melting pot that makes up the American table. Fajitas appear to have made the quantum leap from campfire and backyard grill to commercial sales in 1969, putting Tex-Mex cuisine (a blending of Texas cowboy and Mexican panchero foods) on the world map. Back in the day, it was skirt steak that was a prime ingredient for the delicious fajita but nowadays – anything goes. You can fill up a fajita with pulled beef, tasty chicken strips, black beans, grilled shrimps and so much more – the choice is yours..

Chinese – Dim Sum

Thai – Pad Thai

Thank the Cantonese people for introducing the world to dim sum which has a rich history and tracks back to the days of ancient China when travellers along the Silk Road broke their journey by stopping at tea houses. It was discovered that drinking tea helps digestion, so small pieces of food were offered with the tea. And so, the tradition of dim sum or yam cha (drinking tea) began. Dim Sum refers to small bite-sized dishes which can be savoury or sweet and prepared steamed, baked or fried. Tastes, flavours and fillings are of a great variety – from Shrimp dumplings (siu mai) to bbq chicken buns (char siu bao) and even veggie gyoza – this has to be one of the best food exports to come out of China – and Doha has a brilliant share of places where you can get your dim sum fix.

Some might consider this nothing more than a regular noodle dish – even its origins come from China, not Thailand. However, the popularisation of the dish is credited to Thai authorities and in particular the late Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who introduced and promoted pad thai in his campaign to establish Thai nationalism and modernise the country. Well, if Thai restaurants and food vendors worldwide are any indication, the campaign definitely worked. Pad Thai is made with chewy, stir-fried rice noodles, vegetables, bean sprouts, peanuts, and egg, among other things like dried shrimp, garlic, shallots, red chilli pepper, and even more unusual ingredients like banana flowers. In Thailand, it’s the most commonly served street food, and even in many world cities you’ll find it in a number of Asian neighbourhoods. It’s packed full of flavour and a great option for a fast and filling meal.

South East Asian

BBQ

Probably the most diverse of all cuisines – the term South East Asian is applied to everything from noodles to bento boxes, curries and stir-frys so if you find a place that does a good variety of South East Asian food – take a seat and tuck in. There are many staples of Asian cuisine – rice, noodles, spices, herbs, exotic vegetables and even meat. In Thailand, you’ll find that lemongrass is a widely-used ingredient, whilst in Malaysia coconut rice is a popular serving and Indonesia is known for its Sambal Kecap (chilli and soy sauce). Flavour and palate-pleasing textures is what defines this variety-filled cuisine – and it’s one that rarely disappoints.

This carnivorous feast needs no introduction especially as we’re currently enjoying what’s left of the BBQ season. Though it’s not clear where the term BBQ, or barbeque/barbecue originated – according to Time magazine, the conventional wisdom is that the Spanish, upon landing in the Caribbean, used the word barbacoa to refer to the natives' method of slow-cooking meat over a wooden platform. Whether it’s over an outdoor pit, in the oven or sizzling on a grill, the popular method of slowly cooked meat is as patriotic as it gets when it comes to throwing a true beach or garden soiree. And don’t forget to slather your choice of meat in sauce – and keep room for seconds!

International – Brunch

English – Afternoon Tea

It doesn’t belong to a specific nation, and the origins of the concept of brunch have many tales attached to it. However, the most popular explanation is that “brunch” is a combining of breakfast and lunch that originated in late 19th century England, and went on to become popular in 1930’s USA. Food historians aren't in complete agreement on what the exact brunch spread would look like, with everything from eggs to fruits, stews and sweets making an appearance. One thing is for sure; the brunch of the 21st century (and the brunch of Abu Dhabi) is largely an extravagant set up where variety of food, drinks and some sort of entertainment is expected. Both adults and kids should be catered to, and quantity should not trump quality. The more live cooking stations and creative food offerings – the better.

Ok, so it’s not a type of cuisine but it’s definitely one of the most popular food trends in Abu Dhabi, and the world. Afternoon Tea dates back to 1840 England when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. What we love about this tradition is the mix of sweet and savoury servings – from finger sandwiches packed with cream cheese and salmon, to delicious cakes and pastries, and, of course, mouth-watering scones adorned with clotted cream and jam. In this part of the world, Afternoon Tea comes in all forms – Arabian, Japanese and British too – so you’ve got plenty of choices. WHERE TO TRY:

T

his extraordinary assemblage of 95 paintings, drawings, and objects including more than 20 works from across Rembrandt van Rijn’s career and by his workshop - surveys Rembrandt’s artistic journey in 17th-century Leiden and Amsterdam, as well as his relationships with rivals and peers including Jan Lievens, Ferdinand Bol, Carel Fabritius, Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer. Among the many highlights in the exhibition are two works by Vermeer—The Lacemaker (Musée du Louvre) and Young Woman Seated at a Virginal (The Leiden Collection)— that were painted on canvas cut from the same bolt. In the exhibition, these have been hung side by side for what is thought to be the first time in 300 years. Also of special note are: the first display at Louvre Abu Dhabi of the museum’s most recent acquisition, Rembrandt’s oil sketch Head of a Young Man, with Clasped Hands: Study of the Figure of Christ, ca. 1648-56; and the first-ever combined display of Rembrandt’s Bust of a Bearded Old Man (The Leiden Collection) with the special carrying case commissioned for it by a previous owner of the painting, Andrew W. Mellon, the eminent early 20th-century financier and philanthropist. Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: Both the exhibition and the accompanying cultural programme highlight Louvre Abu Dhabi’s commitment to bringing key moments in art and history to a new global audience, and further cement the museum’s mission to become a centre for cultural exchange. “I would like to express our immense gratitude to our partners, the Musée du Louvre and The Leiden Collection, for their constant support and cooperation around this exhibition,” he added. The Dutch Golden Age was a brief period during the 17th century when the Dutch Republic, newly independent from the Spanish Crown, established itself as a world leader in trade, science, and the arts, and was regarded as the most prosperous state in Europe. Worldwide trade, driven by the Dutch East India Company and Dutch West India Company, gave the Netherlands (the coastal region of northwest Europe) an important advantage throughout Europe and the world. Rembrandt and Vermeer established themselves at the forefront of a new artistic movement characterised by a deep interest in humanity and daily life. In this context, the exhibition explores the evolution of Rembrandt’s career starting in his native Leiden where he created his early famed series of allegorical paintings of the Senses. These works demonstrate the artist’s youthful ingenuity

and experimentation with expression, composition and colour. Paintings created later in Amsterdam are also on display, including sensitively rendered portraits, the renowned Self-Portrait with Shaded Eyes, and Minerva in Her Study, his monumental history painting of the goddess (both from The Leiden Collection). These works are displayed alongside paintings by other masters from Rembrandt’s artistic circle, illustrating the influence that this remarkable group of artists had on each other’s work. HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism— Abu Dhabi, said: “The very inception and early success of Louvre Abu Dhabi was founded on our close friendship with France and our multilayered partnerships with global museums and art institutions. In 2019, the UAE is celebrating the Year of Tolerance, which is testament to our long-standing tradition of nurturing a culture of openness and exchange,” he continued. “The exhibition Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age illustrates not only the importance of cross-border cultural collaborations, but also how artistic creativity has always been at the heart of great historic moments.” The exhibition is drawn primarily from The Leiden Collection, one of the largest and most significant private collections of artworks from the Dutch Golden Age, interspersed with masterpieces from the Musée du Louvre’s exceptional Dutch collection. Loans from the Rijksmuseum and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France complete the presentation. The exhibition also features a very rare and beautifully crafted 17th-century ship model from the Rijksmuseum. It is the first time such an object has travelled to the UAE. ✤ 44

Hotel Mumbai WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

There’s amazing action sequences with a hint of comedy. Sidestepping from the traditional origin story concept, this allnew energetic adventure definitely gets a yes from us. – Captain Marvel

After a series of terrifying terror attacks take place all over the city of Mumbai, things will never be the same for the people of India. The film follows the heartbreaking story about the victims and survivors of the 2008 Mumbai attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

DIRECTOR: Anthony Maras CAST: Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

A chilling look inside the true events of 26/11, Hotel Mumbai is an unlikely crowd pleaser. An event that changed India’s approach towards terrorism forever, Anthony Maras does a great job of depicting the events sensitively while also keeping it very raw. Hotel Mumbai aims to present a reliable narrative of what happened during the three-day ordeal. Based on interviews of survivors and witnesses, the film introduces the viewers to the overwhelming terror and tension that everyone involved experienced. Showing the impact of the attacks on locals and visitors in equal measure, Maras gives much of the narrative space to the four gunmen. Straying away from the traditional notions of heroism, Hotel Mumbai puts no one in the heroic spotlight. Stunningly framed and photographed, the film is the perfect tribute to everyone affected by the terrible tragedy.

Opening with a series of instruments, Tell Me It’s Over gives us very old school and vintage vibes. Offering a very soul type feel, we see Avril taking a refreshingly different direction with her music for the very first time. Chronicling the singer’s battle with Lyme disease, Head Above Water is a powerful, spiritual epiphany that takes a highly personal note. The emotionally charged ballad features dramatic Christian rock vibes and is an open letter to her fans. Emerging from a physically and emotionally debilitating time, Head Above Water introduces us to a whole new side of Avril – one that we love to see in her music.

The restaurant features a separate semi-private dining area, several cosy seating booths and large communal tables for bigger groups. We were obsessed with the fresh warm bread, which was mouthwatering when accompanied with the beautiful kashk-e-badenjan, made up of Persian ripe white cheese, grilled eggplants and seasoned with Iranian spices; as well as the famous dish of esfenaj-nargesi which was a concoction of fresh spinach, sautéed onion and fried egg – drool factor on high! The mains followed suit as we tucked into juicy kofta kebab, saffron-marinated chicken taouk and plump shrimp that had us fighting over the last piece – it was just SO good. The grills were accompanied by traditional rice mixtures that wouldn’t go amiss in any genuine Persian restaurant. The desserts were the highlight of the whole meal. A trio of three neat scoops graced the table – faloudeh (Persian icy noodles flavoured with rosewater), bastani-zaferani (Iranian saffron ice cream with pistachio), and makhlut (a mixture of Persian icy noodles and ice cream). The second was a taste-bud pleaser – we could eat this for dessert EVERY day. All washed down with some traditional red tea – the entire meal was one filled with depth and texture and many talking points. The service was impeccable too. The Swissotel Al Ghurair is within walking distance of famous landmarks and cultural locations such as the city's colourful souqs, Dubai Creek, Al Seef and other historical districts. It is in close proximity to Dubai International Airport and Dubai Union Station. There’s also a shuttle bus that connects the hotel to La Mer Beach. They’ve thought of it all! Charles & Keith invited selected media to a gathering where the brand presented its Spring Summer 2019 campaign titled 'Summer Daze'. The collection draws inspiration from the eccentric '80s Memphis design aesthetic as it brings the season¹s most desirable fashion pieces to life through vibrant colours, quirky graphic patterns and bold shapes. The campaign’s creative concept was artfully captured as the camera lens followed two young women spending an exquisite summer vacation on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. Offering the perfect summer vibes, Charles & Keith’s new-season standouts, which include derby shoes, sandals, slip-ons, pumps, mules, roomy totes, plexi block heels, loafers and clutches, are all you will need for your next sun-soaked getaway.

CLEAN, MEAN MACHINE With driving power to give the UAE’s recent breezy days a run for their money, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible is a car that commands attention. FACT was happy to oblige…

• CITY RIDES

T

he MINI John Cooper Works Convertible may look like a small fish in a very big pond, but contrary to popular belief – size doesn’t always matter – however, performance does. The top player in the model range of the British premium brand for the small car segment deliver their thrilling on-road show not only with exemplary efficiency, but also with further improved emissions behaviour. And we are here for it! First thing’s first, you’ll hear the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible long before you see it. The car has a fuel consumption combined: 7.1 – 7.0 l/100 km with 6-speed gearbox, 6.5 – 6.4 l/100 km with eight-speed Steptronic transmission; combined CO2 emissions: 162 – 161 g/km with six-speed gearbox, 148 – 145 g/km with eight-speed Steptronic gearbox – equipped as standard with petrol engine particulate filter to reduce particulate emissions. Simple: reduce CO2 emissions while improving torque and power output. The petrol engine particulate filter is now an integral component of the exhaust emissions purification technology on all petrol engine models of the MINI brand in the small car segment. The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible’s petrol engine particulate filter is integrated into the standard sports exhaust emissions system. This ensures that the dynamic power delivery of the 2.0 litre, 170 kW/231 hp four-cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology generates a distinctively sporty sound while ensuring exemplary exhaust emissions. In a region full of all kinds of environmental factors, if you’re someone who wants to watch their carbon footprint when it comes to vehicle choice, but don’t want to compromise on performance – the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible has got your back. The vehicle also meets the especially stringent Euro 6d TEMP emissions standard. If it’s good enough for official standards – it’s great for us. The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible completes the standard sprint of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds from standstill and the interim sprint of 80 to 120 km/h takes a mere 6.1 seconds. You’ll feel this power every time you’re taking off when the traffic lights go green, and even when you’re pulling out onto the open road – it’s a car, and sound, that won’t go unnoticed. The eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission is also optionally available. During the days when we had the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible to test drive, the UAE was experiencing a schizophrenic weather forecast where sweeping winds were crashing through the country. On one particular day, when visibility was low due to swirling clumps of sand circling on the roads, we drove from Dubai to Abu Dhabi not knowing what to expect. To our surprise, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible handled itself like a pro – more so than some of the huge tanks of steel that were (trying) to whizz past this unpredicted underdog. There was little to no swaying, the rigid exterior and structure felt sturdy enough to hit the top end of the speed limit (135km-140km) with overall sprightly

movement, making it one of the most agile small-segment cars we’ve ever driven in the UAE. If that doesn’t satisfy any of nitpickers out there, the car also comes with maximum occupant protection; boasting a complete set of standard safety features with front airbags, head-thorax airbags integrated in the backrests, three-point automatic belts on all seats, ISOFIX child seat mountings for the front passenger seat and at the rear, tyre pressure display and partially active engine compartment lid for optimum pedestrian protection; needs-based control of the restraint systems and rollover protection by means of centralised safety electronics. In laments term, don’t underestimate the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible, it comes packing to face every realistic weather and on-road hazard that you might face in the UAE. The purist, race-feel oriented overall package of the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible consists of the powerful turbocharged engine, the sports suspension with 17-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels, a sports brake system, the John Cooper Works aerodynamics kit and the John Cooper Works sports seats. Of course, if there’s one thing that the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible does well, it’s the car’s powerfully expressive design underlining its manufacturer’s British origin. It carries a dynamically stretched silhouette, strong surface shaping and optimised air routing in the style of John Cooper Works; large cooling air outlets in the front apron which also occupy the space provided for the parking lights and fog lamps in the convertible; distinctively designed side sills and rear apron; LED headlights with white turn indicators and LED rear lights as standard; radiator grille, side scuttles and tailgate with John Cooper Works logo; optional body finish in the variant Rebel Green exclusively available for John Cooper Works’ models. Our biggest surprise was the amount of “approvals” the car received from valet drivers, who, despite getting into the hot seat of Patrol’s and Range Rover’s all day long – still handed the keys back to us with glowing reviews of this humble vehicle. The textile top of the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible is fully electrically powered, especially low-noise operation for the first time; with fully automatic opening and closing of the soft top at the press of a button in 18 seconds, also during travel at speeds up to 30 km/h (trust us, we tried it) and the sliding roof function is available at any road speed. High-quality interior with refined premium ambience, modern display and operating concept of the latest MINI generation and the sports car cockpit typical of John Cooper Works models will greet you on the inside. Now, the MINI is indeed a very special car when you’re sat inside; fully integrated rollover protection bars behind the rear seats; John Cooper Works sports seats in Dinamica/fabric Carbon Black with integrated headrests; John Cooper Works door sill cover strips; John Cooper Works leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles; John Cooper Works gearshift or selector lever; cockpit displays and central instrument surround in model-specific design; pedals and

driver footrest in stainless steel. Dare we say it – it’s playful yet sporty and classy all in one. If you love the sound of personal playlists and belting out the tunes, car karaoke style, the complete MINI Connected incar infotainment programme will tick all the boxes. There’s a constantly updated selection of apps for integration in the car via smartphone; exclusive MINI functions such as MINI Streetwise, online search, Sports Instruments and Force Meter; MINI Connected XL Journey Mate with real time traffic radar and weather warning function; online-based services for the use of social networks as well as entertainment offers such as Spotify, AUPEO!, Stitcher, Deezer, Audible, Napster/Rhapsody, TuneIn and GoPro. New customisation options are the interior equipment feature MINI Yours Interior Style Piano Black illuminated including the back-lit trim area on the front passenger side and the Piano Black Exterior option with high-gloss black surrounds for the headlamps, the rear lights and the radiator grille. The latest additions to the range of options and accessories include the telephony option with wireless charging, the MINI logo projection on the driver’s side, the customisable products of the MINI Yours Customised range as well as numerous MINI Connected digital services. Basically, it’s a playground for techies and car enthusiasts. When passion for motor racing is the driving force and intense open-air pleasure the goal, the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible has more flair and purpose than Queen Dany trying to reach Westeros in Game of Thrones. fact magazine

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh FRIDAY BRUNCHIN’ AT FAIRMONT BAB AL BAHR In general, firsts tend to be important: First impressions and first trips—and when it comes to food, this rule is no exception. Hence, the importance of a good brunch which can be considered the most luxurious meal of the week. Whether you’re looking for a family place, or a buzzing hangout to catch up with friends, the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr is a go-to spot for a weekend brunch. Here is a fun fact for my non-Arabic speakers: Bab Al Bahr means “gate to the sea” which literally is also referring to the location of the hotel in Abu Dhabi which is most commonly known as “Between the Bridges”. For this Friday brunch, it was a special treat as it was for my husband’s birthday and another good excuse for me to not step in the kitchen on a weekend. Upon arrival, we are welcomed with freshly made cocktails before entering the spacious passageway that is a spread of food stations from right to left – and it is a long corridor serving you flavourful cuisines from Europe, Arabia, Asia and the Mediterranean. The highlights for us at the brunch was finding a meat carvery station from Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse & Grill and a freshly made, onthe-counter pasta station by Frankie’s Italian Restaurant which are two of my favourite (and award-winning) dining outlets at the Fairmont. So, you get a taste of both at the brunch! The only downside was I decided to wear jeans on that day so that kept me a bit grounded from going back for seconds and thirds – however probably a blessing in disguise for keeping my waistline under control. Besides the top-notch food, the best part of the brunch was the entertainment from the live DJ and singer who both took turns on the deck and what’s better than having the singer serenade my husband with a happy birthday song? Totally caught him off guard, made him slightly awkward but the smile on his face was beaming and made it jolly by the round of applause from our brunch neighbours. With cake and a customised Nutella crepe from the very inviting dessert station, we stayed till the very end of the brunch enjoying the live singer’s tunes and fine weather of the afternoon – birthday brunch goals.

Yours fashionably, Amal 80

TOP 3: COMFORT FOOD & WHERE TO TRY IT!

Keeping in mind that this issue we’re celebrating famous cuisines from all over the world and where to try them in Abu Dhabi, I wanted to share my top three go-to hotspots that need to be on every foodie’s radar. Levantine Cuisine – in my culture, sharing is caring and this applies to our food as well. Most Levantine food is rarely served as one large meal. Instead, it is served as mezze – many small dishes that allow you to share and taste each option. Do you struggle to find an option for eating out as a vegetarian? A Lebanese restaurant is a great choice and you’re bound to find flavours that please any discerning palate. *TRY IT: DAHAB RESTAURANT & LOUNGE, HILTON CAPITAL GRAND HOTEL. IG: @DAHABABUDHABI Italian Cuisine – have you ever met anyone who really doesn’t like Italian food? I bet you haven’t. But why is it that Italian food has such a universal appeal? Perhaps it’s because it tends to emphasise fresh, simple ingredients yet it’s more than just spaghetti and pizza. Abu Dhabi does Italian food REALLY well and though there’s many choices from trattoria-style eateries to the high-end venues, I always tend to go back to one in particular. *TRY IT: ROBERTO’S RESTAURANT & LOUNGE, THE GALLERIA AT AL MARYAH ISLAND IG: @ROBETOSAE Mexican Cuisine – from the tacos and enchiladas to the churros and fajitas, Mexican food is the most colourful and vibrant of cuisines and you’ll find a wide range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes to please. One of the most important reasons that Mexican cuisine is so popular, is the use of healthy ingredients – I mean, how good is a simple black bean salad? Plus, who doesn’t love freshlyprepared guacamole at their table? I’m THERE for it. *TRY IT: LOCA RESTAURANT & BAR, THE GALLERIA AT AL MARYAH ISLAND IG: @LOCAUAE

BUSINESS MEETS FLAVOUR

Shang Palace, the signature restaurant at 5-star Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, has long been one of our go-to spots in the capital to satisfy our dim sum cravings. The exotic restaurant is guarded by a pair of Chinese lions who stand protectively in front of a set of ornately carved wooden doors. nside Shang Palace, the decor is heavily Chinese-influenced with red paper lanterns hanging over a collection of dark wood furniture. Cute panda themed condiment holders add a sense of frivolity to the dining room and the collection of large round tables are perfectly suited to large groups, with the ‘Lazy Susan’ accommodating easy access to the plethora of dishes which soon overwhelm the tabletop following the completion of a check-list from which we select our dishes. The dim sum lunch that is currently offered at Shang Palace is much more than your standard business lunch and is available every day of the week (weekends included). Whereas many all-you-can-eat dim sum restaurants in the capital certainly bring the flavours of the Far East to the table, here at Shang Palace guests are treated to a selection of 28 dishes which can be enjoyed in unlimited capacities between the hours of 12pm and 2.30pm for the very reasonable price of AED115 per person. Accompanied by friendly and efficient service, the wealth of dishes is quite remarkable and the calibre is strong. Shang Palace is renowned for its representation of Cantonese culinary innovation and despite being marketed as a dim sum lunch, the dishes represent more than just steamed parcels of joy. With soups, noodles, rice and a collection of the chefs signature creations available, in addition to the popular range of dumplings. Beginning with the dim sum, we were impressed by the texture of the dumplings and the way in which they had been constructed. The cases are not too thick and hold the generous selection of fillings well and whether it was the crystal scallop with baby spinach or the roasted duck pot sticker, they certainly live up to their name. For the word dim sum directly translates as “to touch your heart.” The concept of dim sum originated in Southern China as an accompaniment to yum cha (tea drinking), where travellers on the ancient Silk Road would stop at roadside tea houses and consume dim sum as a snack to accompany their tea. Things may have progressed somewhat since then, but the essence at Shang Palace remains the same. In addition to the dim sum, we enjoy a selection of signature dishes which includes the sticky and sweet honey sea bass fillet - a successful combination of texture and flavour and a dish we would certainly order from the a la carte menu on a repeat visit. Similarly, the pan-fried chicken thigh with eggplant and the steamed mussel with Sichuan chilli, offer up tantalising additions to the table which are inhaled almost as soon as they arrive. Yet it’s the bite-sized morsels of crispy shrimp toast that we order again, and again, and again… The lunch menu culminates with a number of small desserts that bring a variety of Asian flavours to the table in the form of matcha and exotic fruits. If you’re not too full from dim sum over indulgence (as we were), we 84

would suggest the fresh mango and herb jelly in coconut milk. Making for a lighter alternative that bursts with sweet notes from the mango. The intricacies involved in creating the Cantonese dishes at Shang Palace is certainly to be admired and for a menu described as being “rooted in nature” by Shang Palace’s Head Chef He Jia. We’re certainly impressed by the commitment to locally-sourced ingredients and the way in which they are utilised in a bid to bring the best of Cantonese cuisine to Abu Dhabi. The jasmine blooming tea is not to be missed; with a dried bud placed into the water that blooms upon interaction with the heat and emanates flavour as it brews. At a time when Abu Dhabi residents are becoming more money conscious, this lunchtime promotion offers both excellent value for money and a varied selection of authentic, high-quality dishes. ✤

M

any of you will be familiar with Sontaya, the beautiful Thai restaurant at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort that boasts an impressive menu and a romantic setting. This restaurant is always popular for a special evening to romance a loved one or for any other special occasion. The restaurant is down near the front of the hotel looking over the pool, beach and palm trees. Its set amongst a series of floating pavilions, which gives a feeling of calm and a sense of holiday. The large floating pathway that leads to the restaurants front door gives a good treat of the decor to come. Large stone walls against smooth pools of water set the scene for a memorable dining experience. The inside area of the restaurant is just as pretty with lots of light and cute, booth-like seating areas and sleek, contemporary decor. Sontaya means 'sunset' in Thai and trust us, there is not better place to watch the sunset than the terrace here. The beautiful outdoor space is relaxed and ambient with picturesque views. Sontaya offers Southeast Asian cuisine, and the menu has classics on offer as well as a choice of other interesting dishes to choose from. We are brought prawn crackers to nibble on that are served with a light curry coconut sauce. To start with, we choose the papaya salad and the chargrilled prawn satay. The papaya salad is fresh and light and served with long beans, dried shrimp, chestnuts, cherry tomatoes and chicken. It's a great starter packed with flavour but is still very light. The tiger prawn satay dish was absolutely delicious with big plump prawns marinated in traditional herbs and spices, grilled to perfection, served with cucumber salad and homemade peanut sauce. Yum. You can also choose the chicken option with this dish but we love the satay sauce with the prize prawns and eat the entire dish with gusto. Choosing the mains was tough as there were so many good things on offer but we ended up going for the Red Curry and the Pad Thai. The red curry was an excellent choice (we went with chicken) in a delicious red curry sauce with lychee, eggplant, cherry tomato and Thai basil. While Pad Thai can be a bit of a cliché order, this was no ordinary Pad Thai. We chose the dish to come as a combination of chicken and prawn with stir fried noodles in tamarind sauce with egg, beansprout, chives, fried tofu, wrapped in a super impressive egg net, accompanied with lime wedge and crushed peanut. Can you say wow? Both dishes really were stand out and it’s clear that Sontaya prides itself on presentation. 88

Sontaya really delivers an extraordinary charm and the staff are super sweet and attentive. You will not be disappointed with the food and the views and, of course, the food. Be sure to also check out their Saturday brunch – which is a fab option for an introduction to the venue and to Thai cuisine. ✤

RELAX AND REJUVENATE FACT’s Angela Beitz discovers a world full of rest and pampering at Eden Spa, Le Méridien Abu Dhabi.

I

love a good massage and try to regularly get my aches and pains sorted out. I head to Eden Spa & Health Club at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi for a Deep Tissue Massage which I'm promised will sort out my tired and achy muscles. Eden Spa is one of the oldest in the city and has a unique design, which boasts 10 treatment rooms with 40 indulgent treatments to choose from, inspired from all around the world for the face and body. Therapies range from European to Asian massages and facials and the spa is referred to as the most admired onestop destination for the unique Ayurveda and oriental massages including Thai, Chinese, Shiatsu and Balinese remedies. There are also two swimming pools, a baby pool and a private beach and gym. The space is calm and relaxing and while it’s one of the older spas in the capital, it’s definitely one of the most popular with its professional staff and vast range of treatments on offer. I check into the spa and am shown to the locker room to change into a robe and slippers. I then sit in the waiting area and sip a relaxing ginger tea that soothes me and gets me ready for the treatment. The massage involves an intense deep tissue pressure to really get down to the base of the pain in the muscles and to relieve tension. I lay on the bed and the therapist starts by pressing her hands firmly all over my body from head to toe, to relax me. The deep tissue massage is then started on the upper back and shoulders where I’m the most tense and have some pain. It’s a super intense massage using a specific herbal oil to nourish and revitalise body tissues and allow toxins to be removed from the cells. Hard pressure is applied and my arms are moved and twisted to really target the pain in the shoulder blades - it's vigorous but a welcome feeling of relief at the same time. This treatment increases tissue strength, improves blood circulation, delays signs of ageing, induces sound sleep and promotes vitality. I leave with an instant relief, especially from the sore areas. The therapist did a lot of strong pressure point work that helped me around the base of my head and neck to alleviate very deep tension, and this coupled with the massage really made me feel so much better. I left super relaxed and I had the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a long time. The whole experience was wonderful and it was great to try a treatment that really gave results, immediately. ✤

SPA & WELLNESS • Grand Millennium Al Wahda is a long-standing hotel in the capital and tucked away inside is their excellent wellness retreat - Zayna Spa. I have been coming here for years and it is one of my favourites for consistency and for choice of treatments. The spa is large with over ten different treatment rooms for men and women, and is very relaxing from the moment you step in. It has everything from massages, facials and a host of other luxurious treatments to help you unwind. I'm here for a 90-minute facial and massage using Elemis products. At Zayna Spa, you get changed in the large treatment room which is a nice touch not having to mess around getting changed in the locker room - it feels more personal. As mentioned, the rooms are spacious and modern with a rain shower, large bathtub, lounge chair, changing area and treatment bed. I start with a foot scrub and then move to the massage bed. There are three different oils to choose from for the massage and since my body is very tight and stiff and I really need to unwind, I go for the muscle relaxation oil. Elemis do beautiful oils and this one smells like coconut and frangipani. I ask for deep pressure and my back is worked on to release tension. A great deal of attention is paid to my very sore upper back and neck where there is a lot of pain. By the end of the massage I feel totally relaxed and all the rigidity in my body has been released, which is a huge relief. I move onto the facial, which is personalised to suit my dry and tired skin, using fresh, hydrating products from Elemis. This is the Pro Collagen Facial which is great for anti-ageing. My skin is triple-cleansed using a very rich, creamy cleanser and then it’s exfoliated. My therapist is gentle but thorough with the exfoliation, as my skin is very fine and sensitive. Then comes the steam, followed by extractions to make sure all pores are clean. An uplifting facial massage is then done on the face and neck with a serum before the therapist applies a thick hydrating mask. To complete the treatment serums, eye cream and SPF is applied. My skin is now hydrated, clear and balanced. I head to the relaxation area to chill out with a tea. This is truly a great spa with an extensive menu and excellent staff. ✤

What are your favourite cultural hotspots in Abu Dhabi and why? Art has always been very close to my heart, so I like to spend my time at Manarat Al Saadiyat and Louvre Abu Dhabi which are home to beautiful art. The architecture and design of the museums are impressive, combining amazing arabesque details, and I do appreciate how much support the galleries give to both international

Share with us some of your professional goals for the rest of 2019 The world of hospitality is continuously evolving, which is exciting and challenging at the same time.
