Forever Fed

Brunch is breakfast without an alarm clock.

Y

ou know what I absolutely adore? Brunches that start 1pm onwards. Why? Because, let’s be honest, weekends were made for lie-ins and if I’m going to feast, I want to do it with a fresh face and with a real mood for good food. Thankfully, weekend brunch culture is given a whole new meaning in Abu Dhabi – and I’m here for it. Brunches are such a great way to take a peek into what a restaurant has to offer. Whether it’s sprawling buffets, big enough to feed an entire street or sharing-style portions that come straight to your table, rest-assured that this city has got it all… and then some. With that in mind and your brunch checklist at hand, turn to p25 and let our Best of the Brunch delight you with nothing but choices galore. Let us know where your favourite weekend brunches are – tag us on Instagram @factmagazine. When we’re not talking about food, we’re usually already sat nice and comfy at another yummy place in town, waiting to devour our next plate of "the best ever" dish. This month is no exception. Check out the homely and indulgent new menu at Pappagallo, an Italian institution that just gets better (p79); take a detour for something a little more casual and comforting at the brand new 90 Centigrade (p83); and visit an old favourite where delicacies like camel tongue and shark reign supreme - it's, of course, Emirati delights at Mezlai (p87). If you’re bored of the usual food joints – fear not. We’ve rounded up some amazing pastimes to enjoy - from cool new arts exhibitions in NYUAD Art Gallery and Warehouse 421 to our entertainment picks of film and books, and even the return of the much-loved Club Social. Boredom is something the UAE capital knows nothing about! Hospitality is, of course, what it’s all about in the UAE. There is no other place in the world where I’ve experienced service quite like here. From food to hotels, the high standards carry into all sectors and areas of life. So, when you’ve had your fill of dining, there’s plenty more to discover in our March issue; fashion, beauty, tech, motoring, arts, culture and so many cool events and promotions for the month ahead. For now, I’m very grateful to be forever fed and living vicariously through every plate of food that comes my way. Happy indulging!☺

Fouquet’s Iconic Food

FOUQUET’S, ONE OF PARIS’ MOST ICONIC RESTAURANTS, MAKES ITS MIDDLE EASTERN DEBUT AT LOUVRE ABU DHABI.

A

symbol of French hospitality, the classic Parisian brasserie has found the perfect home at the art museum on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island. A true meeting of minds, Fouquet’s and Louvre Abu Dhabi represent the pinnacle of both cultural and culinary excellence. Today, with eight locations across the world, including Paris, Cannes, Toulouse, Marrakech, La Baule, Enghien-les-Bains, Courchevel and Montreux, Fouquet’s Abu Dhabi marks a welcome ninth addition to the family. Nestled in the heart of the museum, which houses artistic masterpieces across cultures and time periods, Fouquet’s Abu Dhabi offers a menu created in collaboration with French Michelin Star Chef, Pierre Gagnaire. Testament to his unparalleled creativity and flair, the imaginative menu features French classics injected with an inimitable Gagnaire twist. With spectacular flavours and flawless presentation, dishes remain faithful to the restaurant’s modern French heritage, with particular attention paid to sourcing only the finest ingredients. To begin, tuna tataki is dressed in Champs-Elysées sauce and Burgundy snails are cooked to garlicky perfection. The main courses are studded with French gastronomic delights like sole meunière, cooked in lightly browned butter and zesty lemon with a hint of parsley. The shoulder of lamb, served with green lentil hummus and grilled kale, is the pièce de résistance. The melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu beef, which is exquisitely-plated, also steals the show. With desserts to rival the savoury dishes, Fouquet's traditional millefeuille is its coup-de-grâce, though the glorious twinning of raspberry shortbread with basil and sorbet is also exquisite. Fouquet’s Abu Dhabi remains true to the brand’s aesthetic codes with its unique ambiance and distinctive red leather armchairs. Black and white celebrity portraits from renowned Studio

Harcourt and silver napkin rings with celebrities’ names engraved immerse guests in a “red carpet” atmosphere. Overhead, avantgarde chandeliers float effortlessly above linen-clad tables. The atmosphere of old-fashioned, understated elegance is given a contemporary twist with gallery-white walls, a nod to Louvre Abu Dhabi’s magnificent design by French architect Jean Nouvel. Colossal windows draw the eye outwards, to where the glistening Arabian Gulf kisses the horizon. Just above Fouquet’s, marrying effortless elegance with laidback luxe, is Marta, a picture of Parisian perfection. During the day, afternoon tea is served alongside classic apéritifs. Come nightfall, a sophisticated menu of cocktails and mocktails, dreamed up by its powerhouse mixologists, are served to pumping beats, courtesy of Marta’s resident DJ. Guests can visit for an intimate catch-up over cocktails or opt for private hire and invite their most discerning pals. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.FOUQUETSABUDHABI.COM AND FOLLOW @FOUQUETSABUDHABI ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

COLOURS OF LIFE Austrian contemporary painter Thomas Salamonski returns to the UAE capital with his solo exhibition being displayed at Coya Abu Dhabi. THE PERUVIAN VENUE WILL welcome Salamonski’s vibrant artworks from his “Squared Faces” series which was first successfully presented in Vienna as part of a vernissage and subsequent event for a broad audience of art enthusiasts. Since then, more new paintings have been born and artworks of animals now complement the colourful portraits – hence the change of name. “Colours of Life” will feature portraits with a colour style that reminds the viewer of the graffiti and pop culture in the 80s, but at the same time makes the viewer think of sacral stained glass with the use of a gold leaf layer. These contrasts run through each painting, and the corners and edges continue in round lines, and through the use of light and shadow they reveal a face in all its dimensions. Using these techniques gives the audience the choice on how deeply they want to immerse themselves in the consideration of these layers and forms. It’s seen as a reflection on everyday life in terms of how far we want to look behind the facade of a human being. “Colours of Life” showcases 13 pieces, one of which has never been exhibited before. The artwork will be hung throughout the COYA Abu Dhabi venue so guests can experience the art whether dining on the delicious Peruvian cuisine or enjoying the 12

speciality drinks at the bar. Thomas Salamonski is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He was born into an artistic family – his mother, uncle and grandfather painted – and as such he played and worked with pencil and paper at a very young age. He attended a school for art and fashion in Vienna where he learned to work with different techniques and materials, his preference being oil and acrylic paint. During this time, he also discovered his passion for gold and learned to work with different types of metals. He first considered becoming a goldsmith but with time his passion for painting and photography grew stronger. After finishing school, he continued learning and developing further techniques through self-study. Some years later he chose to continue his education with a degree in photography and graduated with honors. ✤

THE CUP AND THE SAUCER Warehouse421’s newest exhibition, The Cup and The Saucer, explores the concepts of unity, separation and individualism. CURATED BY MUNIRA AL Sayegh, the commissioned exhibition is the first solo show of Hashel Al Lakmi, the largest exhibition for both artist and curator, and the culmination of a two-year collaboration between the Emirati pair. The exhibition tackles questions that underpin the notion of the individual separating from its unit. As its inspiration, it seeks to discuss the metaphoric and momentary divorce that takes place when a cup parts from its saucer, and how within that moment, and within that movement of distancing, a single item, breaks into two. Separation allows for the once whole object to become two separate individuals. Within that spectrum of separation and unity, a compass of opposite extremes is set. There is a clear left and a clear right, a beginning, and an end. The exhibition is anchored around transformation, which cannot exist within the paradigms of something that is immovable. It is within these ideals and principals of a wider unit that collective identity is established. A transformation process cannot occur until individual separation is made. The Cup and the Saucer came about from conversations which revolved around investigating the meaning of the self. The core question is one that asks how we understand ourselves in the context of the past, present, and the future in the notion of thoughts and ideas. And what controls our experience? This exhibition constitutes an exercise in challenging and undersetting of meanings, which are subjective. Curator Munira Al Sayegh, said: “The title of the exhibition, The Cup and The Saucer, borrows the metaphorical stance of two objects created for one another, which only exist as separates when they are pulled away from one another by another factor. “This creation of two into one is very symbolic to Hashel Al Lamki and I. Through our collaboration we explored this sense of two separates coming together to form a unit. The exhibition is a culmination of open ended questions that surfaced during our ritualistic Monday meetings that we had. The framework of this exhibition is the direct translation of the chaotic order of the meeting of two minds into a single space,” she added. The exhibition draws together nine subthemes – nine representing the final of all cardinal numbers – and each is simultaneously dependent on and independent of the others, reflecting the complexities of individualism within a community. Birth and Earth defines the notion of beginnings. It frames the start of time through the act of birth, whilst Versailles mitigates the study of the self through showcasing the presentation of the self’s highest achievements. Linger and Departure, evaluates the fluctuations inflicted by the pull of desire; First Glance invites a study of intimacy through the safety of privacy; Control and Guilt 22

is the emotional equivalence of Newton’s Third Law of Motion, which states “every action has an equal and opposite reaction”; and Screen Savers is the analysis of an alternative reality which is claimed fully until a disruption takes place. Sprinkles is the invisible bind that ties chaos to the order and is the framing of the wild as the tamed; Rejection and reflection, are both moments of internal turmoil that lead to the creation of reconstruction and redefinition and finally, The Curated Room, is a palate cleanser. It is the change of scenery required in instances of mass density. It is the full embodiment of a single subject only understood after the act of distancing from it in order to comprehend its scale in full view. The contemporary pieces work with a wide range of mediums, from a striking variety of paintings including one that measures 10 meters by 2.75 meters in size, and an installation made-up of 52 paintings as one body of work; to sculptures, video works, and a sound piece. TH E SOVERE IG N FOR E S T IN A GROUNDBREAKING COLLABORATION ACROSS ABU DHABI AND DUBAI, THE NYU ABU DHABI (NYUAD) ART GALLERY AND ISHARA ART FOUNDATION HAVE OPENED SOLO PROJECTS IN SPRING 2020 BY AMAR KANWAR, ONE OF INDIA’S MOST CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED AND INTERNATIONALLY-EXHIBITED CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS.

T

he award-winning artist, Amar Kanwar, explores the politics and intricacies of power, violence, and justice, through poetic films and comprehensive multimedia works. The Ishara Art Foundation, a non-profit institution dedicated to contemporary South Asian art and artists in West Asia, will host Such a Morning (2017) until May 20, while The NYUAD Art Gallery, the University’s academic museum-gallery, will show The Sovereign Forest until May 30. The Sovereign Forest at The NYUAD Art Gallery is an ongoing multimedia installation that is a creative response to crime, politics, human rights, and ecological crisis. It evolved out of the political and environmental conflict in the resource-rich, and largely tribal Indian state of Odisha. Kanwar has been observing and documenting the industrial interventions that have irrevocably altered Odisha’s landscape for more than a decade. The Sovereign Forest is a long-term commitment of the artist with media activist Sudhir Pattnaik, and designer and filmmaker Sherna Dastur. The Sovereign Forest is inspired by a search for the possible answers to the following questions: How to understand crime and the conflict around us? Who defines evidence? Can "poetry" be used as "evidence" in a trial? How do we see, know, understand, and remember disappearances? How to look again? fact magazine

Maya Allison, Chief Curator at NYU Abu Dhabi and Executive Director of The NYUAD Art Gallery, said: “This is an exceptionally exciting exhibition and collaboration for The NYUAD Art Gallery. I’m delighted that our collaboration will enable audiences here to have the rare experience of seeing two such major Amar Kanwar projects in proximity. “It is a unique privilege to host his thoughtprovoking and critically important work,” she continued. “The Sovereign Forest is, in many ways, a ‘living’ art work, one that continues to grow and shift with each installation, as do the questions it brings to light. The opening of the Ishara Art Foundation earlier this year marks an important new chapter for South Asian art in the UAE. “When we opened our doors five years ago, I hoped we would one day see such a trans-institutional collaboration – one that benefits our university faculty and students, as well as our broader UAE audiences,” Maya added. Multiple works make up The Sovereign Forest, which has appeared in different iterations. At its core are two films: The Scene of the Crime (2011), a film that documents landscapes selected for industrial development prior to their obliteration, and A Love Story (2010), about the experience of that loss. The installation will include three large handmade books, The Counting Sisters and Other Stories (2011), The Prediction (1991–2012), and The Constitution (2012) with their own films projected on its pages. Containing local fables, stories of the incarcerated, and pieces of “evidence” such as a fishing net, a cloth garment, rice seeds, a betel leaf, and newspaper embedded inside the paper, visitors are encouraged to turn the pages and read these stories. In an adjacent gallery, an edition of The Listening Bench (2013) will also be presented, where visitors can hear an audio track from the project. In many ways, The Sovereign Forest expands upon a theme that has become central to The NYUAD Art Gallery’s program offering: that of landscape as a frame for reflection and examination of where we are, both culturally and physically. The Sovereign Forest’s two films, The Scene of Crime and A Love Story, were edited by 38

ABOUT SUCH A MORNING AT ISHARA ART FOUNDATION Such a Morning (2017) is a feature-length film installation, which premiered internationally at documenta 14 in Athens, Greece, and Kassel, Germany. The fictional narrative which follows two central characters who grapple with a hallucinatory world is a parable for the complex challenges of our times. Kanwar asks: “What is it that lies beyond, when all arguments are done with? How to reconfigure and respond again?” The film follows an aging mathematics professor who retreats from his career, seeking isolation in an abandoned train carriage. Creating a zone of darkness so as to acclimatize himself before total darkness descends, the professor begins to live in a realm bereft of light. The many iterations and sensory possibilities of darkness and visibility are explored as he gradually screens out all the light and enters a subjective world. A parallel story about a woman emerges within the course of the film, providing a compelling, analogous narrative to the protagonist’s. Meanwhile, the professor records his epiphanies and visions in an almanac of the dark, an examination of 49 types of darkness that emerge as a series of letters which are exhibited alongside the film. Kanwar conceived a narrative that continues beyond the film – the professor continues to write his letters – towards a research project with diverse artistic, pedagogic, metaphysical, and political collaborations. These become the rubric for a continuing project, and are at the core of the series of Letters that accompany the film. The paper for Letters was hand-made by Sherna Dastur at the Nirupama Academy of Paper, Kolkata, India. The seven Letters contain texts, 17 video projections, and 45 light projections. The train coach built for the film remains in Delhi, a memorial for the teacher who refused to conform, who stepped off the tracks, and wandered into the wild. The themes of survival and perseverance are deep sources to draw on, resulting in a thought-provoking and compelling presentation. Such a Morning offers a rich lens for audiences to contemplate these core themes from a South Asian perspective, focusing on issues relevant to global audiences today. The Company has made 30 international tours to 45 countries in order to share American ballet with the world, and on many of these engagements ABT received sponsorship from the State Department of the United States government. Abu Dhabi Festival Youth Orchestra Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra Monday, 6 April 2020 The Arts Center, NYU Abu Dhabi Established in 1994 by Riad Kudsi, Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra has inspired and engaged artists through a series of classical and contemporary performances. He studied at the National Conservatory in Prague between 1970 and 1974, before continuing his studies at the Higher Academy of Music where he received a master’s degree with distinction. Since graduation, Kudsi has performed numerous violin concerts as a soloist, motivating him to open up a conservatory of his own in the UAE, where he relocated in 1986. Jazz at the Festival Gregory Porter Thursday, 9 April 2020 Emirates Palace Auditorium Known for his warm baritone vocals, Gregory Porter rose to acclaim in the 2010s with his earthy, cross-pollinated brand of jazz, soul, and gospel. He announced his arrival by picking up a Grammy nomination for his 2010 debut, Water. After signing to Blue Note, he gained even wider notice for his third album, 2013’s Liquid Spirit, which hit number two on the jazz charts, and won Porter the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. ✤

FACT CHECKED INTO THE GRAND HYATT ABU DHABI HOTEL & RESIDENCES EMIRATES PEARL, AND IN ALL ITS TOWERING GRANDEUR, THIS IS ONE PROPERTY THAT REALLY TICKS ALL THE BOXES ON OUR CHECKLIST FOR A STAYCATION IN THE FAST-PACED UAE CAPITAL…

ocated on the very tip of the Corniche, Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences Emirates Pearl is an elegant property made up of sleek interiors. Carefully curated artworks, flawless water features, and glowing lighting fixtures welcome guests to a warm, inviting and rather refined lobby where everyone from the valet to the concierge and the front desk staff are attentive and hospitable. The property is well integrated into the heart of the city and the decor is firmly embedded with influences drawn from local Emirati culture. Check-in desks surrounded by curtains provide the impression of bedouin tents and a feature wall takes on the curvature of rolling sand dunes. Instantly, all your woes will melt away once you’re through the doors of this 5-star hotel; it’s a reminder that Abu Dhabi is indeed a great place to de-stress and renew. Check in is very smooth and you’ll feel an immediate sense of serenity as the lift whisks you up to your room. We walk into the incredibly spacious and tastefullydesigned Pearl Suite, and it’s the far-reaching views of the grounds of Qasr Al Watan and Emirates Palace as well as the glistening azure sea that draws our attention at first gaze – we can’t wait to wake up to this view in the morning! SUITE ENVY As far as luxury goes, Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotels and Residences Emirates Pearl has got an option for everyone. It’s home to 428 rooms, including 332 spacious King and Twin rooms, 36 luxury suites including a Presidential Suite and a Royal Suite, all featuring private balconies, fabulous furnishings with specially-selected details that provide a taste of the culture of Abu Dhabi and – more importantly - those heart-stopping, utterly instagrammable views. We find ourselves in the sprawling Pearl Suite only to quickly realise that THIS is the accommodation for which the saying “where the magic happens” – can be applied in all its glory. And, of course, we mean the magic of the 100sqm of space; having a grand living room with its own family-sized dining table, huge 65” HDTV, and beautiful, comfy couches to curl up on; not one, but two large private balconies with the most awe-inspiring views over the iconic Corniche and surrounding buildings – you have to see it for yourself to believe it; and a gorgeous bedroom and bathroom layout that makes us wish we could just move in already and live here.

The mini bar is stacked with all of our favourite snacks and drinks, and plenty of water bottles which is always a good sign. There’s a Nespresso machine and kettle with a lovely selection of tea and coffee, whilst the individually controlled heat and a/c for the different rooms within your suite is a thoughtful and much appreciated touch. Talking of details, we love the double vanity in the bathroom and how the closet is designed within this space – meaning you don’t have to keep going out of the bathroom to try on different outfits (it’s the small things that count!). The standalone bathtub is also another feature that ties in the easy, elegant living and elevated vibe of the hotel. It’s more than ideal for a long, warm soak after a day of exploring or lounging, just before bed! There’s even a separate work space in the bedroom which makes for a nice place to get cosy with your laptop – that is if work even comes to mind! It’s great to see that there’s an abundant of plug sockets dotted around the room – enough to put all our devices on charge at the same time. We’re especially struck by how convenient and contemporary the fixings and features are in the suite; I’m talking curtains that will open and close and the push of a button and an array of lighting options to suit every mood. All of this can be controlled from your bedside – what better reason to have a lie-in? And if – that’s a big if – you actually manage to leave this sanctuary, suite guests can also enjoy Grand Club access with complimentary breakfast, all day tea and coffee and complimentary drinks and appetisers (between 6pm and 8pm). Italy. The team at Verso deliver an authentic experience through the food and culture of what is undoubtedly in our top three Italian restaurants in Abu Dhabi. From the moment we enter, we're engulfed by the aroma of the Italian kitchen. Hints of freshly baked bread, cheese and basil (from Verso's very own herb garden) can all be identified as we meander our way past display cases stuffed full of Italian goodies. This feast for the eyes continues throughout the restaurant space with shelves stacked high with cookery books, olive oil bottles and ornaments. Wooden tables are laden with a selection of cheeses and the setting has been meticulously designed with even the smallest of details - the tiled floors, the ceramic drinking cups - and an expansive outside terrace overlooking a glorious cabanaflanked infinity pool. The trick here is to order and enjoy your meal – slowly and socially. Special lunch and dinner menus mean that food is kept interesting and exciting but, more importantly, authentic. Insalata mista, noci e formaggio di capra is a plate of juicy heirloom tomatoes, artichokes, walnuts and fresh goat’s cheese that will satisfy all your salad cravings. The traditional staple of Parmigiana di melanzane - baked eggplant parmigiana – is exactly what we hoped it would be – cheesy and comforting with a simple tomato sauce. The Arancini al sugo, Sicilian rice balls with meat sauce filling, is another quality starter made with ingredients sourced directly from Italy. It was, however, the Risotto ai funghi di bosco, made up of Wild forest mushrooms, thyme and parmesan that managed to silence us as we scooped up spoonfuls with gusto. Cooked in the wood fired oven visible across the gleaming marble counter tops of the open show kitchen, a half and half pizza (margherita and diavola) is perfection. It's the sourdough which is key and the flavours of the crisp base leave a lasting impression over the delicious toppings. The Torta della Nonna is a superb concoction of ricotta lemon tart, pine seeds, and forest berries sherbet – highly recommended. Verso is all about homely Italian cooking at good value-for-money – plus, a special shout out to the staff, who are some of the most professional, knowledgeable, and friendly that we’ve encountered in a hotel eatery. In the evening, we head to Pearl Lounge, where elegance exudes from every corner of the room. It is a lobby lounge, a café, a shop, a creperie, and a bar all in one – and we’re here for it. It’s a place to meet and talk, eat or wait, think or drink. Or simply to pause by yourself to relax. The menu is a gracious offering of filling international cuisine, where salads and sandwiches reign supreme. It’s the live crepe station and sophisticated desserts display that stops us in our tracks. We stock up on baked goods and Turkish delight to enjoy with our signature tea blend. Again, it is the lovely ladies who serve us that really light up this place with their earnest presence. You’ll also find a silk-route culinary journey in Sahha – open for breakfast and dinner, as well as a classy bar meets lounge in Lexx – great for pre-dinner drinks. 46

BIG SCREEN Bloodshot

Highlights

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Bloodshot alias Ray Garrison is a superhuman-soldier who was killed and brought back to life by a group of scientists. Using advanced technology, the scientists transformed him into a human killing machine that is able to heal from injuries quickly and interface with technology. Initially Bloodshot doesn’t remember anything from his former life, but when this changes, he has only one thing in mind: Revenge.

DIRECTOR: Dave Wilson CAST: Vin Diesel, Toby Kebbel, Eiza González, Sam Heughan, Guy Pearce

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Based on the bestselling comic book, this upcoming American superhero movie is set to make its big screen debut in March and promises us 100+ minutes of action at its finest. It’s none other than Vin Diesel who brings the comic character Bloodshot to life ― and this alone guarantees a movie worth watching. When elite-solider Ray Garrison and his wife get killed, a group of scientists bring Ray back to life, stronger than ever before. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s now an unstoppable human killing machine. But to be able to control him, the scientists have deleted Ray’s memories completely. When Ray regains the memories of his old life, he hunts down the man who killed him and his wife, and uncovers a larger conspiracy. As Valiant comics’ first movie, Bloodshot will be something very different compared to Marvel or DC movies and promises all superhero fans a new character to celebrate.

My Spy

As Valiant comics’ first movie, Bloodshot will be something very different compared to Marvel or DC movies and promises all superhero fans a new character to celebrate. – Bloodshot

The tough CIA agent JJ gets demoted and assigned to surveil a family’s home. But nine-year-old Sophie spots the cameras in her apartment and manages to follow the clues to JJ’s hideout. She makes a deal with him: she won’t blow his cover if he teaches her how to be a spy.

DIRECTOR: Peter Segal CAST: Dave Bautista, Kristen Schaal, Chloe Coleman

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Packed with different tones and genres, My Spy is a movie that adults AND kids will enjoy to the fullest. Entertainment specialist Peter Segal, whose career has to date brought him within sniffing distance at the Oscars, created a formulaic yet eccentric family action-comedy. His star in My Spy is the former Wrester, Bautista, who’s in the role of the CIA agent JJ. It seems like Bautista is picking up the reins from Dwayne Johnson as the lovable tough guy with a heart of gold and we love how his character develops over the story from the tough guy to the caring one. With plenty of laugh out loud moments, expect some rude humor, crude jokes, and dangerous explosions, gunfire and fist fights.

Changes

Supervision

By Justin Bieber After a musical hiatus of four years, Justin Bieber’s latest album Changes was released on Valentine’s Day and while we can consider it as a present to all the ‘Beliebers’ out there, we can also be sure about it being a Valentine’s present for his wife Hailey, as the album is all about Justin’s love for her. Talking about his marriage with Hailey, the lyrics of all 17 tracks give an insight into the superstar’s matured and emotional psyche, and the personal growth that he has experienced over the last few years. Especially Intentions, featuring Quavo, which serves the many praises of Hailey and proclaims Justin’s intentions to marry her. He compliments her looks, her kindness, her cooking, and her parents for the way that she was raised. While Intentions has a romantic vibe, Yummy is more fun and funkier and has definitely taken over the radio waves. So, whether you’re looking for a melodic backdrop to an intimate dinner or you’re just wanting to shake your hips on the dance floor, there’s really something for everyone on Changes. Guest appearances include Post Malone, Travis Scott, Kehlani and more, and we couldn’t agree more with Bieber, when he said that this is the music he loves the most out of anything he’s created to date.

By La Roux

The Grammy-winning and BRIT and Mercury-Prize nominated artist who gained worldwide fame with her debut album is back on the scene. After the generation-defining hits ‘In For the Kill’ and ‘Bulletproof’, La Roux releases her third album Supervision and delivers, once again, a throwback to a retro 80’s world - one that we find ourselves rather fond of. The Album highlight is Do You Feel, a track that reminds us of Janet Jackson’s 1986 smash hit record ‘Control’. Automatic Driver has a sweet and poppy beat and International Woman of Leisure is reminiscent of ‘Bulletproof’, with icy vocal tones and stabbing synth beats. In general, Supervision is a bit samey and repetitive compared to La Roux’s second album ‘Trouble In Paradise’, but she has still created something remindful of an era of music that we truly love whilst her unique overall sound remains intact and that’s why we love it!

As Vesta walks through the forest, she stumbles upon a handwritten note that says, “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body”. Determined to figure out the murder, Vesta searches for answers that eventually lead her to more questions. A novel that serves a truly twisted reality, suspense and dark humour.

THE 2019 GMC TERRAIN DENALI Featuring an enhanced exterior, luxury interior, functionality, practicality and significantly upgraded safety features, the 2019 Terrain Denali deserves your attention. FACT thoroughly inspects GMC’s latest offering to see what all the fuss is about…

W

ith almost 120 years of vehicle manufacturing experience, the renowned General Motors Company (GMC) brand has designed everything from trucks to military vehicles to vans and of course, SUVs. Founded in 1902, this USA-based motor company has had many decades to hone their craft, producing ever more impressive and popular on-road vehicles. GMC first began to grab the attention of the American public back in 1916 when a GMC truck crossed the country from Seattle to New York City in thirty days. This was a major achievement at the time. Then in 1926, a two-ton GMC truck was driven from New York to San Francisco in five days and 30 minutes. These accomplishments, along with the brand producing over half a million trucks for the US Armed Forces during the Second World War, ensured GMC’s respected reputation as a wellestablished American motoring institution. During the years that followed, the brand began to place ever-increasing value on designing vehicles for public use. These included pickup trucks, motorhomes and eventually, SUVs. These vehicles have since gained huge popularity and enjoyed success across the globe. Recently, the arrival of their second-generation 2019 Terrain Denali to the Middle East has caught many driving enthusiasts’ attention and we could not have been more excited. This month, FACT seized the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the latest Terrain Denali as well as to take it out on the roads to see what it was capable of. The first time we laid eyes on the Terrain’s updated exterior,

56

fact magazine

we were taken by its bold and modern design. The master craftsmen at GMC have evolved the brand’s signature cues with stronger and more sculpted elements. Quality features on the latest model will include the signature satin chrome grille, along with Denali-specific accents. Amongst these are the body-colour facias, lower trim, bright roof-mounted side rails, chrome outside mirrors and body-side moulding. As standard, the Denali will also sport LED headlights as well as 19-inch, ultra-bright, machined aluminium wheels. Other models including the Terrain SLE and SLT will feature signature LED running lamps and tail lamps along with bi-functional HID headlamps. The SLE sits on 17-inch wheels whilst the SLE AWD and SLT models are fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard. It was also clear to us that the small, luxury, four-door SUV has been crafted with aerodynamics in mind as can been seen by its clean lines and streamlined appearance. This wind tunnel tested vehicle’s distinctive profile has been designed to slice through the air with the utmost efficiency, minimising drag and aiding fuel consumption. To add to the already striking appearance of the new Terrain, is the availability of eleven exterior colours including the new Emerald Metallic, Sedona Metallic and Smokey Quartz Metallic. Thoroughly impressed by the exterior of the Denali, we turned our collective gaze to the interior. Like the exterior, the 2019 Terrain’s purposeful interior makes a statement and serves as a fundamental component of the vehicle’s heightened emphasis on refinement and

functionality. Premium internal features include an authentic aluminium trim, soft-touch materials on the instrument panel and doors, as well as active noise cancellation. These have all been seamlessly integrated into the interior design to ensure a luxurious experience. A unique trim tint colour is present throughout the vehicle and Denali-specific logos and piping has been included on the ventilated front seats. Additional standard features include a Skyscape power sunroof, Bose premium 7-speaker sound system and a hands-free programmable liftgate. The centre console has been expanded and houses a pass-through storage compartment underneath. A flat-folding front passenger seat and flat-folding, heated rear seats allow for easier cargo loading as well as the stowing of longer items. This adds greater versatility and functionality to the Terrain, especially for those who may be used to road trips, camping or time away that requires packing a small family and all their luggage into the vehicle. There are also under-floor compartments in the cargo area for secure storage. The new GMC Terrain range keeps occupants connected with a seveninch and available eight-inch-diagonal infotainment system. This system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As impressed with the interior as we were with the exterior, it was time to engage the ignition to see what this new-generation Terrain was truly capable of on the roads. Two petrol engines are available for the Terrain range including a 1.5-liter as well as the Terrain-Denali’s 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with stop/start technology. This piece of machinery can produce 252 hp @ 5500 rpm and 260 lbft of torque @ 2500 – 4500 rpm. It also houses a nine-speed automatic 9T50, electronically-controlled transmission with overdrive as standard. All of this combined with the Denali’s 58

All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) capabilities, translates to a powerful and fun-filled driving experience. The 2019 Terrain comes standard with GMC’s driver-controllable Traction Select system, which offers a selection of choices for different driving conditions. Elements such as the throttle responses are optimised for the selected driving mode. AWD models include a FWD mode that disconnects the AWD system to minimise drag and optimise fuel economy, while the AWD mode offers all the benefits of an active AWD system. We found the handling, acceleration, cornering and breaking of the Terrain to be smooth and of a very high standard - thoroughly enjoying our time on the roads, whether on the highway or inner-city streets, in this exceptional vehicle. The range of safety features for the 2019 Terrain have been significantly expanded. These now include a HD Rear Vision Camera, Surround Vision, Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator, Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Safety Alert Driver Seat, Following Distance Indicator and Front Pedestrian Braking. Additionally, six airbags are fitted as standard. If safety is one of your top requirements for choosing the right SUV, we can guarantee that GMC has thought of, and implemented, it all. We found the new-generation 2019 Terrain Denali to be a most gallant and remarkable vehicle indeed. In fact, it was very hard for us to identify any serious flaws in this luxury car’s makeup. We can only highly recommend that anyone looking to purchase an attractive, functional, safe and performance-orientated SUV to seriously consider this GMC gem. AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh SPA-CATION AT RIXOS PREMIUM SAADIYAT ISLAND I always look forward to weekend plans that involve Saadiyat Island, whether for a staycation, a dinner or a spa visit – it just never disappoints and puts you on vacay mode when you are only a mere 15 minutes away from the city life. One of the gems you can spend your weekend at is the Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island which is the first all-inclusive all-exclusive luxury resort in Abu Dhabi. Whether your looking for a staycation or just a day visit, its’ one that should be on your weekend itinerary for a premium experience of their vast offering in the uber luxe property. My Friday getaway with the husband was kicked off with a blissful spa date at the Anjana Spa. The Turkish inspired Anjana spa is one of the biggest in the capital and specialises in traditional Hammam treatments in addition to having the only Snow Room in Abu Dhabi plus a private swimming pool area to bask in the sun after any spa treatment. We were booked in for the Anjana Signature Massage which is one of their spa signature experiences in the couple’s room that has its own private jacuzzi and sauna to indulge in after the treatment. You can opt for a 60 or 90-minute massage and expect to feel rejuvenated with their therapists who work their way with aromatherapy oils to ease the tension yet make you feel relaxed enough to take a snooze. Once over, we head off to complete our day for lunch at their all-day dining venue, Turquoise, serving international cuisine with an open buffet concept serving up endless flavours from your favourite cuisines. The highlights for us were finding seats in the shaded terrace with live music entertainment and stations of freshly made risotto and ceviche. You can also find kiosks outdoors serving Japanese Mochi ice cream, Turkish ice cream (of course), Turkish baked potatoes, and a hot dog station – this is every foodie’s dream. After indulging in far too much food than I usually do, our day ended at the beach which comes with its own beach library to keep you company while working on that all-important tan. And… relax. ✤

Yours fashionably, Amal 68

If Italian food makes your world go around, let Pappagallo’s new menu spin you around a little more. FACT’s Shabana Adam visits the legendary restaurant for an unforgettable dinner… fact magazine

T

he 5-star Le Meridien Abu Dhabi is somewhat of an institution in the capital. Known for its famous outdoor walkway flanked by a number of restaurants and bars, The Village is where you’ll find the Italian gem that is Pappagallo. We head inside the restaurant to find a quiet and quaint set up where a few diners have taken a seat for an intimate dinner. With the weather being so pleasant right now, a number of Pappagallo’s guests opted to sit outside (we just couldn’t brave the brisk breeze). Inside, you’ll find a two-level restaurant, reminiscent of the corte (courtyard) style houses of Italy with exposed brick walls and lush, rustic interiors that we wouldn’t mind having in our own kitchen at home. Pappagallo has undergone a menu change – which is a welcomed move for those of us who like authentic flavours with a little bit of creativity and excitement. We scan the room and see the wood-fired oven taking prime position – is it even a bona fide Italian eatery if there’s no woodfired oven? We’re happy to see one here. The new menu is vibrant if anything. It makes us smile as some of the dishes offered are pictured right on paper and we now have a good idea of what we could potentially be feasting on. The Caprese di bufala is a vivacious plating of buffalo mozzarella, colourful heirloom tomato, fresh basil and balsamic reduction. Super light and tasty, this dish is an excellent intro into the simplicity and focus of Pappagallo’s new menu. It is, however, the Focaccia rucola, pomodoro e Stracciatella – focaccia bread topped with rocket, tomato and stracciatella cheese that has us mmmh-ing and aaah-ing. The bread is stunning – soft, yet crispy where it needs to be. We imagine that this is exactly how the Italians eat this particular savoury delight in their own homes. Pasta is to Italy as Elvis is to rock’n’roll; they were meant to be. We like that the new menu has a focused and concise number of dishes with carby goodness. We opted for the beautifully-presented Ravioli di ricotta e spinaci – made up of ricotta and spinach ravioli, tomato sauce, fresh basil, and parmesan cheese. An elegant dish, all the flavours come together flawlessly and if you want a filling vegetarian dish, this will 80

tick all the right boxes for your taste buds. The Orata al cartoccio is an absolutely stunning dish. Made for seafood lovers, you’ll get foil-cooked sea bream, mussels, clams, and shrimps in garlic and vino sauce. The meaty white fish is distinctive in taste, and with all the accompanying ingredients it’s BIG flavour in one compact delicious package. Risotto is a plate of heaven here. The Risotto de mare is made with mussels, scallop, shrimps, calamari, lobster bisque, and lemon preserve. It’s creamy and perfectly al dente with a gorgeous velvety texture and subtle fresh seafood taste. If there’s one pizza to order, it’s the one with a little Indian twist; the Pollo tikka pizza is a remarkable home-made base topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, chicken tikka, mint, onion and chilly flakes. The essence of it is truly Italian – a fluffy yet light base with quality ingredients – and the aromas bridge a gap with Indian cuisine through a spicy kick that we really enjoyed. Dessert is a traditional affair with so many Italian classics on the sweet’s menu, but it’s the heady and soft Baba con crema al limone – a typical Italian baba served with

lemon Chantilly and fresh wild berries. The texture is spongey yet firm and the dessert itself is an amalgamation of the richest flavours.. Highly recommended! Pappagallo’s new menu is sophisticated to say the least. Dishes are much more focused on quality and authenticity rather than abundance. Freshness is evident in the palate-pleasing flavours, all of which is matched by a genuine Italian ambience and excellent, attentive service. Would we go back? One hundred per cent YES. ✤

CAFÉ CLASSICS

When it comes to cafe culture the Abu Dhabi dining landscape shows absolutely no signs of slowing down and the five-star Grand Millennium Al Wahda has joined the party with the launch of 90 Centigrade Cafe. FACT’s David Tapley went to savour the delights… fact magazine

he name 90 Centigrade comes from the premium water temperature at which to brew the perfect espresso, so it’s easy to see why the cafe has positioned itself as a hot spot for speciality coffee in the capital. Boasting a home away from home feeling thanks to an array of seating options that includes comfy sofas upholstered in a vibrant yellow fabric as if kissed by the morning sun. For those eating there is a more formal dining set-up and also a lovely terrace that acts as a sun-trap in the afternoon. Fans of the television shows ‘Friends’ will appreciate the Central Perk vibe at 90 Centigrade which feels like a buzzing neighbourhood coffee shop and already appears to have attracted a clientele of regular guests. A concise menu with a real focus on healthy eating and dietary requirements is a real winner and the cafe relies on fresh and locally sourced produce in the creation of its dishes. 90 Centigrade is a day to night venue suitable for a business breakfast, leisurely lunch or quick dinner and the menu is a reflection of this concept. Breakfast specialties include the Benedict Way (AED45), a plate of lightly toasted English muffins, free-range poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce which acts as the perfect start to the day. The ever-trending Avocado Goodness (AED45) is present and correct and represents a generous portion of crushed Hass avocados piled high upon toasted sour dough bread with grilled peppers and eggs. The all-time faves section of the menu is home to a selection of pancakes and waffles and includes perhaps the most interesting dish on the 90 Centigrade menu, the loaded Halloumi Pancakes (AED40). As the name suggests, this savoury take on the breakfast favourite stuffs a trio of light pancakes with halloumi cheese before topping them with a gloriously runny fried egg and a selection of black olive tapenade and saffron Hollandaise for dipping. The dish is a unique entity on an otherwise expected menu and is definitely the highlight of our recent visit, along with the power boost bowl (AED40) of Greek yogurt, chia seeds, cottage cheese and organic muesli. Away from the breakfast items, 90 Centigrade hones in on comfort food classics with a selection of dishes affectionally referred to on the menu as food for the soul. These items include the chicken cordon bleu, grilled salmon, steak and fries and the premium lobster tagliatelle al fredo. Conveniently, all dishes are labelled with a handy key to indicate dishes that contain certain allergens which is convenient and something we’ve not seen elsewhere in the city. 84

Away from the a la carte menu there are also a number of grab and go items such as croissants, muffins and cookies encased within bulbous glass bell jars, Taking pride of place is redfirdgerated canbint housing is all manner of sweet treats from opera cakes and eclairs, through to large slices of carrot cake and an enticing brownie cheesecake. or two home to eat later. The beverage list is also impressive and with the venue opening until 1am each evening, there is the option of licensed drinks available at very competitive prices. If visiting during the day you can’t go wrong with lychee iced tea (AED25) or spring lemonade (AED25), though it’s the coffee that will have us returning time and again. Expect your favourite mochaccino, cappuccino, macchiato, latte or Turkish coffee, or do as we did and order the signature 90 Centigrade (AED23) two shots of espresso that you can opt for is a variety of flavours such as vanilla, hazelnut or caramel. More than just a cafe, 90 Centigrade is also home to an impressive retail element with shelves stocked with premium items that can be difficult to track down in the city. Guests can purchase jams and preserves, coffee cups, Italian pastas or perhaps even a 10KG panettone depending upon your shopping requirements. 90 Centigrade provides a casual escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and with a menu that feeds into the on-going trends of healthy eating and veganism we can already envision this particular cafe becoming very busy as word of mouth spreads. For now, enjoy the peace, the terrace and a beautiful cup of coffee amidst a relaxed and welcoming environment. ✤

esigned to recall an airy Bedouin tent, the award-winning restaurant Mezlai pays homage to Abu Dhabi with its intricate décor and vast menu, which is steeped in the heritage and geography of the UAE. Arabian culture and hospitality is at the forefront of the dining experience in which guests are made to feel like royalty. With dishes deriving from the great Arabian landscapes, Mezlai is an eye-opening – and most of all, palate-awakening - experience, one to be shared with loved ones, under a beautiful starry night. Our sharing experience began with a variety of appetisers. The Rocca Salad was light with a hint of pomegranate to add some zing to the dish which drew us into our gastronomic journey. Mughrabia with Scallops proved incredibly tasty and took us on an external voyage of the evening to the surrounding Seas. The Chicken Liver with Hummus melted in the mouth, with both elements of the dish being the perfect complement to each other. Balance is everything here, including the elegant surroundings that complement the ambience to amplify the overall ambience. Our favourite starter however, was without a doubt the Camel Tongue. A true Emirati delicacy which was delectable, a must try for any budding foodies. If we had to replicate its unique taste, we would liken it to a slow-cooked beef brisket however it has an undoubted individualistic taste. One thing that really rings true at Mezlai is the impeccable service, providing wonderful assistance to make the experience all the more special. Add to this, the stunning surroundings, the water features amidst the gardens, the vast architectural heights and the fantastic food then you are in for an unforgettable evening. Our main courses then arrived at the table to much anticipation. The Lamb Medfoun is an amazing dish. Roasted following the old Emirati traditions with the meat wrapped in banana leaves and then slowly cooked in an earthen hole. Mezlai has a special oven, which replicates this cooking technique to bring historical Emirati food to the Palace, paying homage to traditional methods of a truly deeply-rooted past. We journeyed back to the Seas for our next two dishes of Grilled Jumbo Prawns and Jasheed. The prawns are caught locally and marinated in a marvellous marinade before being served with a side salad. The Jasheed was collectively our favourite dish of the evening. Boiled shark was a first for all of us and is definitely a dish we will be returning to. The shredded shark meat and onions combined to give a flavour explosion – taste buds tantalised to say the least. Everything about Mezlai draws you in and makes you feel at home as the charm of Emirates Palace envelops you whole. 88

Our journey around the Middle East was completed with the Bethitha. An enchanting dessert, which combined a date, saffron and cardamom dough with fresh whipped cream. It transported us to a state of bliss with everyone licking their plates for every last morsel just out of sheer denial that the meal was coming to a climax. Arabic coffee was served to conclude the evening and give a true fond farewell to our most memorable expedition. ✤

Walking into the stunning Sense Spa at Rosewood Abu Dhabi to experience a brand that is exclusively available at only this wellness venue in the whole entire Middle East region, is definitely something to get excited about. Firstly, Sense Spa is a gorgeous space; exuding an understated luxurious vibe that is created using serene low lighting and neutral, modern décor. It relaxes me from the second I walk in. A hot towel and welcome drink accompany my consultation form, which I fill in with as much detail as possible to help my therapist to understand my skin’s needs. Having just come off a flight a mere four hours earlier, it’s safe to say that my skin was up in the air (pun intended); the t-zone was incredibly oily whilst other areas were dull and dry. Even the best concealer on the market couldn’t hide these dark circles, deep wrinkles and open pores. I was ready for a complete skin overhaul. Thanks to the team at Sense Spa, who work tirelessly to bring the most effective treatments to their guests in Abu Dhabi, I was going to try one of the four rituals designed by the very first Antiaging Skincare line formulated for all skin types – even the most sensitive ones. I’m talking about none other than EviDenS de Beauté (EDB). This is the brand with the perfect combination of two worlds: Japan - the secret for technical excellence, and France - an authentic source of inspiration. EDB uses The Triple Collagen, an exclusive breakthrough of Japanese origin for exceptional anti-aging effectiveness and 92

amazingly visible results in combination with the spring water of the legendary La Foux from the south of France, which has been known for its centuries-old curative powers. Because beauty is about scientific efficiency and personal emotions, EDB has created unique voluptuous face care spa rituals combining technical excellence and celebration of senses. These 60-minute facials are indeed the ultimate beauty experience as I was going to find out. I’m led to a calming en-suite treatment room where I slip into a comfy robe and sit down for a quick chat with my lovely therapist about my skin concerns – “a combination of everything” – I say. She’s thoroughly acquainted with my jet lag and tired complexion, and recommends The Essential Nurturing Ritual which is designed to Protect & Hydrate. This particular ritual provides a “Cellular Renewal Booster” for deep hydration, long lasting protection and a youthful glow. Dedicated to treating dehydrated skin to help restore optimal moisture levels, re-plump the skin and reduce fine lines. It is particularly effective after sun bathing and exposure to external aggressions such as wind, air conditioning, and pollution. Sounds perfect to tackle my needs. I hop up onto the spa bed which is heated to the perfect temperature and I get cosy under a warm blanket. I love that the spa does not compromise on providing a wholesome experience, even when you’re visiting for just a facial. My therapist begins with an in-depth yet gentle cleansing of the skin. By the time I feel the hot towels wiping away the cleanser, I’m already falling into a deep slumber. There is a great combination of more EDB products and steam to open up the pores, which is followed by a tingling mask. During the time that the mask stays on, a wonderful and much-needed massage of the head, neck, shoulders, and upper back is carried out. I’m so unbelievably warm and relaxed, and

quickly melt away into snooze mode. Once the mask is removed and the face is cleaned, my therapist applies a hydrating lip balm and voila, I’m good as new. EDB is not an on-the-spot results brand, it is more sophisticated and long term. If you return for their facial rituals on a regular basis, the effect is limitless. I walk out of the spa feeling reenergised and refreshed, vowing to talk about the beautifying success of EDB to my friends and anyone looking for a wellreputed facial. But, also, about the professional and welcoming service at Sense Spa, which absolutely never disappoints. ✤

here is something to be said about a wellness venue that REALLY believes in your own energy and aura. A true journey of beauty, health and wellbeing, Anahata Spa was born out of one woman’s own passion and persistence to overcome tragedy and seek peace of mind. Owner, Shamma Al Nowais is a warm and welcoming demeanour with a beautifully calm approach to the mind, body and soul. Anahata’s concept follows the Ayurvedic tradition recognising the seven chakras, which channel energy between the physical body and our metaphysical consciousness. Much like the Indian philosophy, guests are encouraged to dig deep and really find answers to a wider awakening, and ask all those questions that maybe you’ve been avoiding or kept locked away. Shamma has created Anahata on the concept of the seven chakras; energy centers connected to various organs and glands within the body that are responsible for distributing life’s energy. Anahata itself refers to the heart Chakra and, of course, health is at the heart of all we do. Here, the venue traverses the bridge between man and nature to discover a state of balance and harmony for your mind, body and soul with a selection of restorative and holistic treatments based around the sacred seven Chakras of the body. After all, blocked energy can lead to illness, so it is vitally important to allow this energy to flow freely. Focusing on this energy system helps maintain balance and promotes an all-round state of wellbeing. At Anahata, there 96

are treatments for both women and men, everything from body scrubs to hammam, massages, facials and even home service is available. Housed in a huge villa in Khalifa City, Anahata offers a genuine escape from the city bustle. The villa is beautiful with lots of different rooms including a hair salon, nail spa and treatment rooms upstairs. It's definitely a hidden gem and is well worth seeking out. Once you step inside, the team of lovely, professional staff will guide you throughout – offering enough information and attentiveness, yet remaining perfectly discreet. We visit for the 90-minute Anahata Seven Chakra Healing Massage. We’re really looking forward to sinking into a comfy spa bed and getting those tense muscles – and stress – eased out. The Chakra crystal massage incorporates the seven chakras through a variety of techniques to leave you completely relaxed, achieving the ultimate body and mind balance. Arrive early as the treatment begins with an eye-opening ritual – a personalised colour therapy consultation. After filling in the usual form where they ask about your lifestyle in order to understand your main areas of concern, we are then asked to select three colours from a swatch. It has to be instant and the colours that speak to you the most in the moment. Each colour coincides with a chakra to reveal any blockages you may be feeling. We chose colours that spoke to our root chakra, sacral chakra and third eye chakra. We then proceeded to have an in-depth chat with Shamma about recent and past life events that could explain why these specific colours stood out for us. What’s great is that the team will print out a chakra sheet for you, for the colours you chose; these have everything from a list of healing foods to healing exercises, physical and emotional symptoms and general information about how you can work to heal and repair this particular part of your energy from within. After we sip on their secret-ingredient welcome drink (it’s the most refreshing tasting concoction we’ve ever had in a spa), we’re led to a large treatment room to slip into comfy robes and lay on the spa bed. The therapist begins with placing stones on different chakra points down your body and begins with the massage which incorporates hot stones and varied techniques. The combination of heat and pressure is a welcomed one. We ease ourselves into a sweet sleep as the therapist works out tight knots and helps us to regain our head-to-toe equilibrium. Trusting the wisdom of the ancient practices of Anahata and Thai medicine, it’s easy to lose yourself in this beautiful space filled with an aromatic world of aromatherapy, derived from herbal remedies made from purely organic oils and spices. When it’s time to wake up and get dressed, we’re filled with a sense of calm and composure that was missing when we first got to Anahata. Ready to tackle the dusty weather and the realities of life outside, we were already counting down the days until our next visit to Anahata Spa for complete peace of mind. ✤
