Eat,Pray, Give

“Always have a willing hand to help someone, you might be the only one that does.” - Roy T. Bennett,

I

can hardly believe that it’s already time for Ramadan. May will mark the start of the Holy Month when Muslims all over the world observe fast from surise to sunset. As I try and get ready for my own Ramadan journey with changing my sleeping pattern, eating consciously and general mental prep for the 30 days of fasting, I’m learning more and more that this special time is one of celebration, reflection and, most of all, sharing and giving. With that said, I’m constantly appreciative for calling the Gulf home, where Ramadan is the most spiritual and beautiful occasion of coming together with family, friends and neighbours to be thankful for all the great things we have in life. And if you keep up with me on instagram, you’ll see that food is absolutely on top of my list of things to be grateful for, so isn’t it a coincidence that some of the best dining experiences, whether at home or in a restaurant, are served up in Ramadan? The delicious spread at the end of the day is really the most humbling part for someone who fasts - and a lovely feast for those who are joining in the festivities for a taste of what it’s all about. Turn to p21 for Ramadan 101, our extensive round up of Abu Dhabi’s top tents, iftars, and sohours to check out from mid-May onwards. Tag us (@factmagazine) on instagram when you’re posting from any of the gorgeous offerings - we’d love to see where our recommendations have taken you! Last month, we held the ceremony for the 4th annual FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi at the stunning BU! in The Hub at The Mall, World Trade Centre. Over 65 winners were announced in what was a lively affair attended by the who’s who of the hospitality and food and beverage industry. A full list of the winners and pictures from the event can be found starting p41 - did your favourites walk away with a plaque? Though I’ll do my best to behave with bad eating habits before (and during) Ramadan, I can’t promise that I won’t be on the hunt for the best Kunafa in town. If you think you’ve found it, just holler. Wishing all of our readers who are celebrating, Ramadan Kareem. See you next month to talk Eid escapes, World Cup and more...☺

R&B/SOUL R&B/SOUL

Dirty Computer

By Janelle Monae

A scintillating amalgamation of synthladen soul, rubbery funk and sugary R&B, Janelle Monae is a true musical treasure. Adding a distinct festive Southern bounce to the music scene, Monae has successfully secured her position as a true icon in music, fashion and film. Her fourth album and first “emotion picture”, Dirty Computer is an artistic progression we have been so excited to witness. Deep, personal and straight from the heart, the album sheds light on Monae’s story like never before. Evoking the style and flair of Kiss, Make Me Feel might be the strongest Prince tribute we’ve heard since his death. Packing a ton of 1980s nostalgia, the liberated jam carries a feeling of raw sensual energy all throughout the song. With personal liberation as the key theme of the album, it is all about the celebration of one’s self as well as strength and unity. A diss record aimed at haters, Django Jane is a bold step away from her previous work. The perfect balance of grace and reverence, Dirty Computer is definitely one of our favourite records of the year!

Electric Light By James Bay

James Bay’s stellar rise to pop stardom has been the subject of fascination for fans and critics alike. Attempting a major creative reinvention, Bay embraces electronic beats and woozy atmospherics while citing Prince and Frank Ocean as his inspirations. A world away from his signature guitar driven sound, Wild Love sees the Hitchin-born singer-songwriter experiment with warped synths and subtle guitar lines. Combining carnality and gospel music, the futuristic track takes his sound to a new place. Armed with a brand new image and sound, this audacious change of direction marks a significant turning point in the singer’s musical journey. Pink Lemonade continues his bold transformation with pulsating rock breakup ballad you need to soothe your lovelorn heart! Playing with different styles of production of delivery, James Bay offers a new and improved sound while still sticking close to his roots. We can hardly wait for what’s next!

Chronicling the rise of the female show runner, this book is about how the role of women has radically transformed the television industry. From Shonda Rhimes and Lena Dunham to Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling, the Press examines how these extraordinary women have revolutionised the entertainment landscape.

ven before we walked into The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City, we leave our luggage at the concierge and stroll across the road to a walkway fronting the Dubai Canal. It’s evening and the water is lit up, and small boats, mediumsized yachts and even larger vessels are casually floating up and down the canal, enjoying the breeze. It’s a postcard-perfect sight and we proceed to take at least 20 images, later picking which one to post on the ‘gram! Back across the road and we’re ready to check in. A friendly front-desk member of staff ensures a smooth process, handing over the room key and showing us to the lifts. The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City, is a fairly new hotel, taking a grand stand at 44 floors tall. Just off Sheikh Zayed Road and on the banks of Dubai Water Canal, the hotel offers you a vibrant stay, with every aspect of your visit transformed into a revitalising experience. Thanks to the unique Westin Wellness programme where each area of hospitality is heightened; from your peaceful guestroom with Westin Heavenly Bed and Westin Heavenly Bath to Feel Well at the energising Heavenly Spa and Eat Well with the eight delicious restaurants offering cuisines from around the world – everything is designed to ensure an enlivening stay.

KEEP IT DELUXE As we open the door to a large Deluxe King Room, the view of Dubai Canal catches our gaze once more. The 45sqm accommodation is a retreat after a day ful of meetings or sightseeing. With a king56

sized Westin Heavenly® Bed, we can assure you that a good night’s sleep is on the cards when you stay here. If you’re mixing business and pleasure, unwind in the restful corner seating or stay productive at the writing desk with complimentary Wi-Fi. Refresh in the Westin Heavenly® Bath featuring a free-standing bathtub, separate rain shower and dual-sink vanity. The beautiful see-through screen between the bathtub and room is a gorgeous addition – and for those who need privacy, there’s a blind that comes down when you want a nice soak and some tranquiity. The room is what we like to call “totally cushy” – meaning everything feels soft and bouncy – we feel like the first people to step on to the indulgent carpet (and we love it!). For anyone who wants to add that extra touch of luxury to their stay, opt for the Club Floor Deluxe guestroom with access to The Westin Club. Here you’ll get complimentary food and drinks throughout the day and personalised check-in as well as many other benefits to make your time at The Westin Dubai even more convenient.

EAT RIGHT With eight delectable venues and the signature SuperFoods RX menu, you can indulge in the very best of the world’s cuisine. Of the great variety on offer, we would highly recommend checking out Cook Hall Dubai. A unique and modern take on an American gastropub, serving regional US fare, this place is one that blends casual, classy dining with upscale grub and a bar atmosphere. Promoting itself as a bar-centric food hall where handcrafted cocktails are stirred, brews are drawn and small plates are passed, it’s the kind of place where you can grab lunch or hangout for after-work drinks, or socialise for dinner with your friends and colleagues.

The Forty Four Sports Bar is also another hotspot with a more lively ambience, ready to welcome you every day from 12noon to 2am at Level 44. The recently opened pub features luxurious interior decor, a generous terrace with amazing views, BBQ and Shisha station, two bars, pool tables, dart boards, HD screens, pinball machine and a bowling area. It’s the perfect place to gather and watch the upcoming World Cup games alongside really yummy food and drinks. And when you’re in the mood for something a little more elegant, head to Babiole and indulge in decadent courses surrounded by mesmerising scenery. The recently-opened restaurant features a lavish terrace boasting unbelievable views of the majestic Burj Khalifa. The hotel offers a range of monthly food promotions that are worth knowing about. The City Brunch at Seasonal Tastes, for example, is a foodie affair with live cooking galore and a DJ spinning all-time favourites. The kids are covered with fun activities where they can even learn to cook! And the fun doesn’t end there either as the after party continues at Cook Hall with the first few drinks on The Westin!

RELAXATION REFINED Heavenly Spa spans a massive 4,000sqm, the length of the 6th floor of The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City! It’s safe to say that you’ll quickly forget the city bustle when you step inside here. Being one of the largest spas in Dubai, it offers a range of renewal experiences within 20 treatment rooms across separate male and female areas. Think high ceilings, natural elements, revealing views of the city skyline and iconic downtown area, including Burj Khalifa. Relaxation facilities include sauna, steam, dedicated couples section with generously sized suites for sidefact magazine

Before a relaxing treatment, the beautiful pool area that fulfills both the swimming and tanning needs of adults alongside the fun and super safe elements of being child-friendly, is totally worth a visit. Hop on a sun lounger and let the staff take good care of you as the sun shines high above! Not only is The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City so ideally located – just 10 minutes from Downtown and the Burj Khalifa as well as being around the corner from Dubai’s new aquatic theatre show, La Perle, you can even spoil yourself with calming walks down by the canal. Although this is a city hotel, its facilities wouldn’t go amiss in any luxury 5-star resort. BEAUTY AND BUSTLE IN BAKU

MODERN ARCHITECTURE, OLD CITY WALLS AND THE WARMEST PEOPLE ARE WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN AZERBAIJAN’S CAPITAL, BAKU. FACT CHECKS INTO THE CITY’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER ADDRESS, THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL BAKU TO EXPLORE A DESTINATION THAT STILL REMAINS LITTLE-VISITED BUT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON EVERY TRAVELLER’S BUCKET LIST…

fact magazine

61

F

or GCC residents, Baku is an east-meets-west destination that offers the best of both worlds. Its historical core firmly keeps a foothold in the orient whilst its beautifully refreshing promenades and sky-high Flame Towers take one step towards picturesque European life. With a visa on arrival for Gulf nationals, and a brand new ASAN e-visa system for citizens of 81 countries, including the UK, Australia, and US (making it quick to apply and receive a visa via email), visitors can now take full advantage of a place that blends cosmopolitan living with old-world charm. As with every trip we embark on for the first time, location is key to getting the most out of your break. And so, the Beaux-Arts style luxury hotel that we chose was everything – and more – than what we’d hoped for (and seen online). Enter, Four Seasons Hotel Baku…

ALL THE CHARACTER

There’s a reason why we love the Four Seasons as a hospitality brand. They go above and beyond to embrace the essence of every destination in which they open a hotel. Here, there couldn’t be a more picture-perfect property to showcase the distinct sides to Baku. Its exterior is classic, reminiscent of luxury neighbourhoods in cities like London and Paris, with a white-washed stone front that quickly adds a palatial elegance to the façade. Inside, we’re greeted by marble everything with sophisticated flower arrangements, cosy sofas, and stylish chandeliers – and that’s just the lobby. We’re soon 62

fact magazine

taking note of the décor because it’s every interior maven’s dream, and all the things that we’d want in our own home. The feeling is one of being in a large living room with all your friends from all over the world gathered in one place, for the staff and guests that we came across had at the very least a friendly smile to share, if not, great conversation about Baku and their visit. If the hotel’s goal is to make your surroundings comfortable on a homely level, they’re doing things just right!

PREMIER LIVING

You have to pinch yourself when the hotel room you’re staying in is bigger than your entire apartment. Not only is the Premier Room a huge space, it has THREE balconies; one looking directly into the Old City, the second with an instagram-worthy shot of the famous Flame Towers and the third boasting far-reaching views of the promenade along the shores of the Caspian Sea. Yes, it was hard to tear ourselves away to go out and explore the city every morning when seeing all its different sides from our room was a beautiful cultural experience in itself. With the option of either a king-sized or twin beds, our accommodation is filled with light. It’s airy, neutral tones and indulgent décor reminds us that Four Seasons is truly a tasteful brand. The beds can only be described as what we imagine it would be like to sleep on a fluffy cloud, and the ottoman-style furniture means there’s a place to do everything.

Large arm chaired seating is perfect to sink into after a day of walking, the work desk with executive leather office chair is a laid-back space to catch up on emails without compromising on relaxation, and the huge bedside table means that aside from the very large walk-in closet, you’ve also got plenty of room to store things in the bedroom. The highlight of the room, however, had to be the mind-blowing bathroom which extends to reveal a set up that wouldn’t go out of place in a 5-star spa. We’re talking one very BIG marble bathroom that includes double vanities; mirror embedded television, a deep soaking tub, separate rain shower room and a separate toilet with bidet. When you’re ready for full-on luxury downtime, slip into a sumptuous terry cloth bathrobe and enjoy the high-speed internet access for multiple devices, fully stocked private bar, in-room movies on the 42-inch LCD television with a Blu-ray player, iHome for your iPod and iPhone, and a room service menu of the most delicious food. Do you even need to leave?

ELEGANT EVERYTHING

It’s often the case when you stay at a hotel that at least one area is in need of improvement or attention. Not here. Down we go to Zafferano, the signature all-day dining restaurant, which is named from the Italian word for “saffron,” the spice that grows abundantly in Azerbaijan. The Italian-themed menu highlights delicacies from Central Italy (we find that Italian cuisine has a stronghold in the city’s food scene). fact magazine

In warmer weather, the restaurant opens to an outdoor terrace at the edge of the new Philharmonic Park. What convinces us almost immediately about the restaurant is our first foray down to breakfast. Having just ordered our beverages, a gentlemen on the table next to us bids good morning and proceeds to say “this is the best hotel breakfast in Baku” and with lots of nodding and smiles, we get up to explore. Think pastries galore, an Azeri breakfast station, eggs cooked to order, healthy juices, an extensive cereal counter, hot foods like sausages, sautéed mushrooms, beans and more, plus all the beverages you need for a wake up call or morning boost. The hotel’s version of the local egg with tomatoes breakfast main is definitely worth a try – you might even go for seconds like us! On our last day, we enjoy a leisurely breakfast followed by a quick nap and then a visit to what I can only describe as the most sophisticated spa of any city hotel we’ve every visited. It’s the only spa in Baku with a view of the sea and for that alone it’s worth a visit. The luxurious Jaleh Spa and Health club has treatments dedicated to advanced skin care and body therapies with ancient traditions of Turkey and Persia. There are nine relaxing treatment rooms as well as the sensual bathing retreats known as hammams. Separate changing rooms for men and women offer showers, saunas, steam rooms, ice fountains and heated loungers. The indoor pool is unlike anything we’ve seen before and it takes we can’t stop taking pictures of it – though no phone screen can do this grand space justice. Most of all, it was the small touches by the staff who replenished our water and offered complimentary tea and dry fruits and nuts as relaxation snacks, regardless of not having a treatment booked – and this is just some of the finer benefits you get to experience as an hotel guest.

SEND ME YOUR LOCATION

You’ll be that annoying person on your insta and Facebook feeds who spams everyone with all their checkins because the Four Seasons Hotel Baku is the most ideally-located hotel you’ll find. It’s just seconds from the Old City where trinket treasures, local vendors, quaint homes, and the most incredible authentic Azeri food await (highly recommend lunch at Tandir – a small tavern with the best Azeri bread, ever). This means that souvenir shopping is right on your doorstep. On the other side, you can cross the road and tackle the stairs up to the Flame Towers and Marty’s Lane where the best views of the entire city will give you real hashtag travel goals. Turn left out of the hotel and cross over to the promenade or keep going until you reach the bustling Nizami Street where a more modern approach to shopping, cafés and monuments is evident. Also, just across the road is the stunning Carpet Museum. 64

We’d recommend taking a food break at the Cookshop Baku where our request for a non-menu item (the local kuku – eggs with herbs) was fulfilled by a friendly waiter and a happy chef! In simple terms – we couldn’t have picked a better hotel as the base for our very first trip to this mesmerising city! There are very few traits left of the country’s soviet past, bar the odd old-school car – which actually adds a sense of nostalgia and realness to the place. Azerbaijan makes most of its money from oil and gas, though grains, grapes, cotton and livestock are also a good contribution to its economy. You will learn more about the country’s many different revenue streams as well as its familyoriented culture just by talking to locals around the city. They are a gracious people – men carry a gallant attitude, holding doors open and addressing passers-by politely, whilst the women will stop to have conversations about everything from your outfit to your beauty regime and, as we encountered, to offer you fresh baked local desserts straight out of their grocery bags. As Baku is in the early stages of becoming a tourist hotspot, we found that the local people welcomed us with genuine intrigue and an eagerness to learn and share stories. With a cup of Azeri black tea soaking in the lemon slice flavours, which is served at every seated spot, we happily obliged and made new friends and memories of our own! ✤

EVOLUTION OF THE SUV:

2018 BMW X2

fact magazine

69

• CITY RIDES

Hate it or love it, the SUV holds top spot here in the UAE, and car manufacturers are well aware of the easily-bored crowd who constantly crave the next best thing. Raising the stakes is BMW’s newest entry, the sleek X2…

Y

ou know those charts that depict human evolution, beginning in the days of the Australopithecus who grow and morph into the Homo habilis, the Neanderthals and hey presto, the Homo sapiens of modern day movement – who agreed that walking is so last millennium and decided to build four-wheel machines that would carry them to places? The development of SUVs could inspire its very own chart, starting with sturdy army-issued Dodges, to the primeval post-war Utility Wagon with Jeep mechanics and the metal-top Land Rovers that soon transformed into family-friendly Explorers, hustling Hummers and time-travelling crossovers from manufacturers like Lexus, Porsche and Jaguar to name but a few. In other words, if an SUV wants to draw attention in 2018, it had better bring its A-game… and then some. As the BMW X2 came around the corner for us to test drive, its extrovert exterior had us intrigued. Oozing understated confidence; this 2018 model cuts a sublime figure from any angle – like a finely-tuned athlete taking position at the starting line. There’s an essence of rugged refinement that gives the X2 extra pep with a touch of BMW’s signature sporting grace of a coupe. With a sporty suspension set-up, the BMW X2 pushes back boundaries, puts a firework under old habits and brings previously uncharted levels of driving pleasure to this vehicle segment. 70

fact magazine

If there’s one thing that we are absolutely sure of at first glance, it’s that the BMW X2 was made for the young, urban crowd. Social butterflies who make their car a second home and live for all things digital – this is the car that’s going to keep them connected in all aspects of life, especially with the cool kids of instagram. That’s not to say that the BMW X2 wouldn’t appeal to any motoring fan who is young at heart! Let’s begin with details, the BMW X2 has wheel arches with a squared-off look, striking exhaust tailpipes and accentuated side skirts, not to mention an elegant roofline, slick lines and slim window graphic. If you’re looking for a car with its very own unique character that still stays true to its maker’s roots, the BMW X2 won’t betray this. Two design features, in particular, catch the eye. The X2 turns BMW’s familiar trapezoidal kidney grille form on its head, and it now broadens as it heads south; this is the first time a modern BMW has gone about things this way and it certainly works to emphasise the car’s width and sporty stance. And the additional BMW roundel on the C-pillars references a much-loved detail of classical BMW coupes, such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL, further highlighting the sporting DNA of the BMW X2. It’s all well and good to please the eyes, but what about the thrill-seekers looking for extra oomph? BMW TwinTurbo engines transfer the X2’s attractive genes to the road in suitably dynamic style. Three variants are available from launch; the BMW X2 sDrive20i petrol model, the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant, and the X2 xDrive25d diesel. Both diesel cars come as standard with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while the petrol model is fitted with the sporty seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. All combinations turn every journey – on any terrain – into an adventure.

CITY RIDES •

Some of the best drives in this car, and journeys that really played into the strengths of the BMW X2 included the leisurely treks between Dubai and Abu Dhabi – or any open road for that matter. The handling of the car is smooth and enjoyable, and with the right playlist on repeat – you’ll be in automobile heaven. The sporty suspension of the BMW X2 transfers the fine agility and dynamics of the BMW drivetrain to the road. The M Sport und M Sport X models come as standard with M Sport suspension with firmer spring and damper settings and a lowered ride height. This feature is available as an option on the basic BMW X2 – bonus! Moving inside, the interior of the M Sport and M Sport X models is trimmed in an enticing Micro Hexagon fabric/Alcantara Anthracite combination with contrast stitching for the instrument panel and centre console. And the instrument cluster and large displays bring added flourishes to the interior, acting as visual pointers to BMW’s digital expertise. However, if you’re anything like us and eager to get going in the driver’s seat – a.k.a you know exactly where to plug in your USB for Spotify listening pleasure – then you don’t need a reminder to take advantage of the features such as BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive Services – both available as an option for the BMW X2. Of course, on-road safety is a concern as with all vehicles and the BMW X2 doesn’t do things by half. It offers customers cutting-edge technologies when it comes to driver assistance systems. For example, the Traffic Jam Assistant eases the driver’s workload in tedious stop/ start traffic on congested motorways. This system is part of the optional Driving Assistant Plus, which comprises a series of camera-based driver assistance systems. The optional Parking Assistant is likewise designed to make life easier for the BMW X2 driver, automatically identifying suitable parking spaces and, if desired, taking over steering duties for the parking manoeuvre. For old-school SUV lovers, the BMW X2 is a prime example of what happens when a brand strives to move with the times whilst staying dedicated to its origins. For new SUV enthusiasts, the BMW X2 is the bold, uncompromising choice that mum and dad will praise for its safety features (and iconic name), that friends will be happy to jump in and on that will sway classic SUV fans to either hate it or love it. Whichever it is, the BMW X2 breaks conventions to lead the way for the new SUV generation – this is going to be their year! ✤

ANGAR: FIRE IT UP As the only hotel in the world to span a Formula 1 Circuit, Abu Dhabi’s Yas Viceroy makes quite the first impression. Once inside, a plethora of food options take over your senses. FACT’s David Tapley takes a seat at Angar for real Indian indulgence…

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

O

ur most recent visit to Yas Viceroy brought us to the acclaimed Indian restaurant Angar. The venue’s name derives from the Hindi word for ‘ember’ and the connotations with fire as a cooking method are immediately evident. A colour scheme of vibrant reds guides diners’ attention towards an openshow kitchen with the focal feature being the tandoori oven (but more on that later). Service is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable and comes from a predominantly male team, dressed in traditional tunics that keep with the colour scheme of fiery reds, burnt orange and earthy browns. While the menu is an expansive two-page affair, the team is more than happy to lead the way towards suitable dishes with no sign of upselling. Broken into distinct sections for breads, soups, starters, tandoor, vegetarian and non-vegetarian (there’s even a vegan menu) the selection gears towards the more traditional choices such as butter chicken while sensibly including a handful of more obscure options. Our Duck Galouti represents one of Angar’s surprises and brings a sense of fine dining modernity to a cuisine usually associated with comfort food. A duo of minced duck patties are particularly well seasoned, sat upon a fragrant saffron bread and topped with generous pieces of foie gras making for an audacious blend of texture and flavour. As expected flavours take prominence throughout the meal and the starter of Saffron Coconut Scallops comes served in a sweet and velvety sauce that works to complement the delicate flesh of the poached scallops. These intricate sauces are likely to be the element we’ll remember most about our visit to Angar and the signature main course of Lemon Chili Lobster Curry represents another strong dish. Two pieces of poached lobster take prominence within a gravy of coconut and kaffir lime that’s seductively aromatic without taking away from the crustacean as the focus of the dish. The curry had us reaching for the light and fluffy naan breads, which straight from the tandoor are easy contenders for the best in the city. We actually order extra to mop up the gravy (it’s that good)! Yet the tandoor remains the focus of any meal at Angar and the Kebab Platter shouldn’t be

missed. Presented on a sleek black slate the chargrilled taste is achieved via the intense heat of the clay oven, sealing in the meats natural fats. Made up of tandoori prawns, tandoori chicken tikka, salmon tikka and a lamp chop, the cookery method may be the same but the unique spice blends ensure each item achieves a unique and prominent composition of flavour. With many of the dishes presented on red crockery, the name of the restaurant is carried into the culinary journey, with the presentation of each menu item well thought out and executed with precision to emphasise the notion of tandoor cookery. The desserts retain a modern flair on a handful of Indian classics of which we’d recommend the rich and decadent Chocolate Cardamom Cake and the warm Gulab Jaman served with an interesting fig and ginger ice cream. Through the addition of a vegan menu and weekly curry club, Angar is at the forefront of catering to customer interest and dietary requirements in a city where these factors are so often lacking. With molecular gastronomy and flamboyant presentation increasingly becoming the norm when it comes to Indian food in the UAE, it’s pleasing to see Angar sticking with a more traditional interpretation of the subcontinent’s cuisine and it’s this representation of such a diverse country that makes dining at Angar so special. As the winner of best Indian restaurant for the past two years at the FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi, there’s no better time to experience the vibrancy of India right here in the capital. ✤

Take Me To Nolu’s

Nolu’s Downtown is somewhat of an Abu Dhabi institution, a homegrown concept that fuses together Californian-style cooking with a unique Afghani twist – we’ve never heard or tasted anything like it. Intrigued by the concept, FACT’s David Tapley went to check out the menu…

ituated on the upper level of Abu Dhabi’s Galleria Mall, Nolu’s makes for a welcome change from the glitzy retail outlets and fine-dining restaurants this particular shopping arcade is renowned for. It would seem the secret is well and truly out, for on the Friday afternoon we visit (when much of the population are brunching) Nolu’s is heaving with families enjoying the food and beautiful waterfront views. Much of the attraction comes from a versatile menu traversing everything from breakfast favourites, through to burgers, sandwiches and traditional Afghani dishes. Yet Nolu’s offers more than just good food, with a firm focus on healthy eating, those in search of personal wellbeing will be pleased to find everything from cold pressed juices, superfood bowls and bone broth, on a menu that literally offers something for everyone. Flipping the UAE’s insatiable appetite for cafe-culture on its head, the team at Nolu’s look to diversify the country’s beverage requirements and this relates to more than just excellent coffee and tea. Smoothies (we highly recommend the Amazonian Hero blending together acai, banana, blueberries, pineapple, chia seeds and almond milk), freshly squeezed juices and a number of ‘supercharged remedies’ make for some truly interesting 88

choices with an emphasis on health as opposed to the usual gimmickry — with turmeric, beetroot and charcoal matcha lattes proving incredibly popular - as the menu clearly states “there’s a little love in everything you drink.” Marking an entirely new approach to dining in the capital, this emphasis on fresh ingredients and simplicity combined with complex flavours, also translates into the food. We can’t resist the Mantoo Dumplings a staple of Afghani cuisine comprising of steamed parcels stuffed with minced beef, onion and coriander and served within an intricately seasoned tomato sauce. The result lies somewhere between a Nepalese momo and Italian lasagne while promoting a subtle blend of spices and seasoning that really helps to elevate the dish. The Qabili Pallow is easily the most popular dish on the menu and actually represents the national dish of Afghanistan. Hailing from the Northern part of the country, this fragrant ricebased dish presents brown rice cooked in an aromatic stock and served with carrots and raisins which add a vibrancy and sweetness to the dish. Yet it’s the lamb shank which is the real star of the show. Slow cooked and beautifully tender the perfectly seasoned meet glides easily from the bone at the mere touch of the fork. The Kebob is often associated with

street-side vendors and small restaurants in Afghanistan and here at Nolu’s the skewered meat is skillfully prepared with a nice charred flavour while still retaining the moisture of the meat, with a more than generous portion lying upon a bed of aromatic Afghani brown rice. The menu at Nolu’s also features an abundance of pastas, grills, burgers and salads and despite the overwhelming choice, we would thoroughly recommend saving a little room for dessert. A glass display case showcases a variety of cakes and pastries including tiramisu, cardamom cheesecake and thick wedges of exceptionally moist carrot and red velvet cakes. Housed within a bright and open space, immaculately tiled, strung with exposed light bulbs and featuring plenty of vegetation, Nolu’s Downtown exudes a hipster-like vibe that’s rare to find in the capital and one that complements the concept with such gusto that it’s easy to see why Abu Dhabi residents flock here. With locations in Al Bandar and the new Raw by Nolu’s at Al Seef, rest assured that team Fact is looking forward to checking out Nolu’s third opening very soon and it goes to show how much this homegrown brand is changing the way in which we think about food in Abu Dhabi. As the winner of Best Café at the FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi 2018, there’s no better time to see what all the fuss is about. ✤

f you’re in need of some serious pampering in luxury surroundings, then Emirates Palace Spa is the answer. The spa is large but has a lovely, relaxed feel with low lighting and Moroccan décor. We love the pathway leading to the spa with symmetrical lines of Moroccan lamps on either side. We fill in our consultation form while refreshing ourselves with a cold towel and a zingy cranberry juice with mint. We’re ushered upstairs to our treatment room and again we marvel at the décor. The whole spa has a beautiful Arabic vibe with gorgeous Mosaic tiling in bright colours. We’re booked in for a 60-minute Oxygen Facial from Linda Meredith which is new to the spa and is already proving very popular. The use of oxygen in facial treatments is popping up more regularly Oxygen is nature’s most powerful healing element and has been used in the medical industry on various skin conditions for many years. It was introduced into the beauty industry in the 1990’s and Linda Meredith was the first to introduce it in the UK as part of a beauty regime. The unique difference of their Oxygen treatment, apart from the oxygen being medical grade (therefore more effective), is the serum they have developed. A vitamin enriched formula with high percentages of important ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and beta glucan. These ingredients

visibly plump and firm the skin, and this can be seen with just one treatment. Incredible results are obtained with a course of six treatments close together so the effects remain over a period of months. We’re shown to the stunning and tranquil treatment room by the excellent therapist, Tiffany. We change into a fluffy robe and shuffle over to a large chair in our soft slippers to have our foot welcome ritual done. The feet are submerged in a warm bowl of water with white, pink and yellow rose petals and are cleaned with a scrub and milk. While we’re doing this we chat out Tiffany about the facial and our areas of concern. Lying on the treatment bed is beyond comfortable, with double duvets and lots of cushioning. Tiffany analyses the skin by feeling it, by touching and pushing the skin, by rubbing it and gently pinching it, to identify the key problems. Dehydration, a bit of congestion and some fine lines are our main concerns. Tiffany starts with a double cleanse, once to remove grime and make-up and then again to deep clean. The ultimate deep cleaning product is absorbed into the skin and begins to breakdown the sebum trapped under the surface. This cleansing treatment is thorough and different to the standard rub-on-rub-off process and post-treatment you can see the difference. A beautiful scrub

is then applied (with pineapple and papaya) with tiny granules to buff away dead skin. As dehydration is a problem for us, a lavender scented hydrating mist is sprayed next. This contains hyaluronic acid which helps the skin hold water and also allows products to sink into the skin and smells and feels amazing. Next, a layer of oxygen spray is used all over our face and neck. Once it is all absorbed, another layer is added followed by a sheet mask that is covered in hydrating serum. The richest most luxurious moisturiser called “Amazon” from the brand is lavished on the dehydrated skin. Our complexion is left feeling fresh, clean, glowing and totally plump. There is no redness and we walk out with glowing skin, seriously impressed by the facial. Emirates Palace Spa is what true spa dreams are made of. The treatments are fantastic, staff is friendly and super professional and the surroundings are stunning. Treat yourself and book in for a wonderful experience today. ✤

DRIPPIN’ IN FINESSE For all your head-to-toe beauty services, one brand has become synonymous with excellent service and lasting results. FACT let the team at Tips and Toes Abu Dhabi doll us up in time for the magazine’s dining awards last month, and we were surely impressed…

W

hen it comes to beauty salons in the UAE, ladies and gents everywhere are spoilt for choice. Thankfully, for all the women in the Emirates who need a little TLC, pick me up or pamper session, Tips & Toes offer a range of services to cater to your every beauty need. This awardwinning haven of serenity is a homegrown brand that offers every lady that comes through their doors, a complete feast for the mind, body and soul. With the belief that beauty is a way of being, not just a way of looking, Tips & Toes is your local go-to stop for all things hair, nails, and body! Whether it’s a blow dry, a mani/pedi or a full-on body scrub and massage, this place has it all. On our visit to the Khaleej Al Arabi branch in Abu Dhabi, we’re greeted by a courtyard entrance that immediately helps to fade away the busy city life and send us into a state of relaxation. The friendly receptionist confirms our treatment booking: a shellac manicure and pedicure followed by a wash, blow dry and hair styling. The therapists, Claire and Annie make sure that we’re comfortably seated in a cushy armchair, and begin with the service. To top that off, Berti is tasked with carrying out the 20-minute neck and shoulder massage that we opted for; an excellent addition to the already calming scenario. The nails are cleaned, buffed, filed and polished with precision as the massage sends us into a state of tranquility. What we loved most about the treatments is that each therapist was incredibly skilled in their talents. A heavy knot in the top right shoulder was vigorously eased, and we swore in that very moment that we’d be back for a full body massage with Berti. Furthermore, our shellac nails lasted perfectly for almost three weeks – helping to up the ante at work events, parties and general dayto-day meetings. When it comes to hair, Tips & Toes’ Pradnya is attentive and actually listens to exactly what we want; a wash, blow dry and styling with loose curls for an evening al fresco get-together. She’s professional and talkative without being intrusive, and all the while explaining the different stages of what was being done to the hair. She’s also happy to recommend products for your hair type, and isn’t pushy about expecting you to make a purchase – we appreciated this polite approach and friendly manner. In the end, with freshly painted nails, a bouncy hairdo and a renewed sense of energy, we walked out of Tips & Toes feeling rejuvenated. This is the brand that gives you more bang for your buck with amazing monthly special offers and a team of pros who can literally do it all, but more importantly, do it all well. ✤
