All The Small Things
“
The heart that gives, gathers." - Marianne Moore
W
hat’s your favourite thing about Ramadan in the Gulf? Is it the opportunity for intimate dinner gatherings to eat all the cheese sambusek you could dream of, or maybe it’s the calmness that falls over the city where a slower pace of life sets in, and how about those shorter working hours (admit it, it’s a bonus) and more time to do the things you love? Personally, Ramadan in this region has become one of my favourite times of the year. For those who find themselves soul searching or in need of a break from the superficial pressures of society, this time of year really allows people to put things into perspective. Whether you’re fasting or not, this is a great chance to get back to basics with everything from your nutrition to giving in the community and also reflecting on what’s important around you. For me, the simplicity of this time and observing fast is a true test of willpower and one that I thoroughly enjoy. But, do you know what else I enjoy? Eating. And with that in mind, it’s amazing to see the huge variety of Iftar and Suhour experiences on offer for Ramadan 2019. Turn to p23 and let us help you to start making those all-important plans with family, friends and colleagues – there’s everything from sprawling buffets to private settings, set menus and so much more. The choice is yours. Staying on the culinary path, FACT hosted its fifth annual dining awards at the palatial Hakkasan Abu Dhabi last month – and it was certainly a night to remember. Turn to p56 and check out all the winners and photos from the evening. A huge thank you to the 350+ hospitality pros who came out and joined in the celebrations – you are the heart and soul of the capital! If you’ve done the Abu Dhabi – Dubai return trip anytime soon, you might have seen the tall structures on the side of the road, resembling giant works of art. And you’ve been tuned into a specific radio station when passing by them, you may have even heard a voice tell you a little bit about each one. This, readers, is one of the most innovative art exhibitions created by none other than the team over at Louvre Abu Dhabi. Turn to p50 and see if you can spot the art along the highway! As always, your monthly dose of fashion, beauty, tech, travel and more is packed in our pages. And whilst I can’t believe I made it to the end of this note without mentioning the three most famous words in the world right now – here goes: GAME.OF.THRONES. I’m Ramadan ready but definitely not ready for season 8 to end. HELP. Until the next one… make good choices!☺

Breakfast Brunch Goals
RENOWNED ITALIAN RESTAURANT, ROBERTO’S HAS LAUNCHED ITS BRAND NEW ALL-DAY-BREAKFAST BRUNCH AVAILABLE EVERY FRIDAY AT ROBERTO’S ABU DHABI.
T
he new concept has been introduced to offer diners in Abu Dhabi an alternative option to a traditional ‘brunch’, providing a more relaxed and flexible experience for guests looking to enjoy delicious high-quality food without restrictions and pressures often found at traditional brunches in the city. Inspired by Italian and European breakfasts, the brunch is served every Friday from 12pm to 4pm – meaning that guests can treat themselves to their favourite meal at any time of the day, whether that be scrambled eggs with burrata and datterino at 12noon or the tastiest French toast with coffee and mascarpone cream at 4pm. Additional dish options include a traditional Roberto’s English breakfast, egg royale and smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs, to name a few. The family-friendly restaurant will also be offering a menu for the kids, meaning those under six can dine for free with a separate kids’ area keeping them entertained all day long. 8
fact magazine
Chef Francesco, Group Head Chef of Roberto’s explained: “We wanted to bring something new to the market that offers the same great value of brunch but with more choice, over a longer period and a less rigid package price and selection. “We believe what we created is much better suited to the relaxed Abu Dhabi market and will introduce a new market to Roberto’s who will be hooked when they realize the standard of our dishes and the overall experience,” he added. Perfectly located on the waterfront of Al Maryah Island, with the magnificent skyline of Abu Dhabi in full view, Roberto’s guests enjoy the very best authentic Italian experience from classic contemporary dishes to the signature service and stylish ambiance. Prices start from AED35, children aged under six eat for free. ✤

AL RABI’A AT WAREHOUSE421 Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi’s creative hub for regional artists, has opened an experimental, process-led space for Al Rabi’a, meaning ‘The Fourth’, led by Emirati visual artist, Shaikha Al Ketbi. SHAIKHA AL KETBI WILL BE seeking to cover walls with paintings, add furniture pieces and undertake ritualistic performances. While audiences view her complete work displayed on the walls, Al Ketbi will at the same time produce new pieces in the space during installation. The space will feature walls, lined with static and moving paintings depicting scenes from the artist’s sub-consciousness and dreams, as she seeks to display fabricated recollections of her past, evoking times from her girlhood and her artistic life. While Al Ketbi has often previously shown her photography and installation work, this time she will focus on experimenting with her drawing/painting practice through activating this creative space. In this work, she looks to interrogate the nature of the human mind and human memory, and in particular she seeks to examine the ‘imposter syndrome’, in which individuals doubt their accomplishments and worry that they are a ‘fraud’. Shaikha Al Ketbi said: “This experimental artistic project is an intensely subjective, personal experience, as I seek to display the nature of my own subconscious thought. Through this effort, I hope to be able to profusely produce work that not only impacts those viewing, but also is impacted by them, and this experimental piece is reflective of a symbiotic approach that I 10

want to bring to my artistic practice.” Al Rabi’a is open until June 2. Visitors to Warehouse421 will be able to view this project, alongside Warehouse421’s most recent exhibition, Nomadic Traces: Journeys of Arabian Scripts, when visiting the project. Manager of Warehouse421, Faisal Al Hassan, said: “It is our pleasure to welcome Shaikha to experiment over the subsequent months in the space at Warehouse421. Her artistic practice is an exciting form of contemporary artistic expression, and we look forward to bearing witness to its construction over the next few months. “At Warehouse421, we seek to offer space for creative practitioners that facilitates their projects and generates conversations which leads to further artistic practice. Through working with emerging artists such as Shaikha, we hope to showcase local and regional talent which can be found here,” he added. ✤

Highlights
WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Fred Flarsky, a free-spirited journalist and Charlotte Field, one of the most influential women in the world, have nothing in common save for the fact that she was his babysitter and childhood crush. As Fred and Charlotte unexpectedly reconnect, he tries to charm her with his self-depreciating humour and the memories of her youth. Eventually sparks fly and lead to an exciting around-the-world romance.
DIRECTOR: Jonathan Levine CAST: Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
The rom-com to end all rom-coms, Jonathan Levine’s politically inclined Long Shot is bound to be this year’s definite crowd-pleaser. So much more than just your run-of-the-mill romantic comedy, the film touches upon gender dynamics as well as alludes to the election of 2016. Starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, their instant likability and immense star power definitely wins the film some well-deserved brownie points. After quitting his job, Fred Flarsky, an eclectic journalist runs into his old babysitter, who happens to be Secretary of State. With nothing in common except for their past, Fred and Charlotte get closer as she decides to give him a job punching up her speeches for her presidential run. He helps her loosen up and indulge in new experiences, while she teaches him how to care for something other than his own opinion. A wholesome narrative about two people helping each other and learning to love, Long Shot will warm your heart while leaving you in stitches with its witty humour. Escapism at its finest!

Aladdin
“
A wholesome narrative about two people helping each other and learning to love, Long Shot will warm your heart while leaving you in stitches with its witty humour.
As young Aladdin stumbles upon a lamp that releases a wisecracking genie, life as he knew it totally changes and he embarks on a magical adventure. What follows is a thrilling stand off with a power-hungry Grand Vizier, who also has his eyes on the lamp that makes your deepest wishes come true.
– Long Shot DIRECTOR: RGuy Ritchie CAST: Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Giving us major nostalgia and a muchneeded dose of magic, Disney’s Aladdin will hit you right in the feels. An exciting and vibrant live-action adaption of Disney’s animated classic, Aladdin brings Guy Ritchie’s flair for fast-paced action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah. The film tells the age-old tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Aladdin, who is smitten with the Sultan’s daughter, tries to protect the lamp from evil Jaffar, who is plotting to overthrow the Sultan with the help of the magic lamp. Jasmine’s multidimensional depiction as well as the introduction of a new suitor for the princess, definitely give the film a cinematic edge over its previous renditions. But what makes it stand out from the rest of the Aladdin remakes is Will Smith’s unique portrayal as Genie – are you onboard?

Beauty Marks
By Ciara
Calling all Ciara fans! After taking some time off to focus on her personal life, the singer-songwriter is ready to introduce us to a whole new era. From seductive slow jams and hype dance tracks to delivering epic pop culture moments, Ciara always leaves us wanting for more. Thankfully, the Atlanta queen is back in full force! Dedicated to the love of her life, “Greatest Love” is completely adorable and sensuous at the same time. Offering a different energy yet staying loyal to her discography, the song sees Ciara going back to her slow-tempo roots. An absolute feast for the senses! Undertaking a new musical direction, Ciara aims to level up with her latest offering. Another absolute banger, “Dose”, is the vibrant motivational track you need in your life. A rhythmic, bassy backdrop and bright vocals will have you falling in love with Ciara all over again! Featuring artists like Kelly Rowland, Macklemore and Tekno, the album is on its way to becoming a surefire hit. Her most extensive and personal record ever, Beauty Marks introduces Ciara back into the music industry.
No Geography
By The Chemical Brothers Having stood the test of time with their enchanting sound, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons have been mesmerising us with their musical genius for 25 years now. Discovering new avenues and dimensions, the futuristic Manchester duo’s newest offering is another step in the right direction. “Gravity Drops”, a techno-laden contemplative single, is definitely one of their more downtempo numbers in a while. It’s infectious and catchy beat has us pressing repeat! The duo has been known for their savvy recruitment of various star vocalists over the years. Diverging a little from their usual formula, the album features only two relatively unknown vocalists. Retaining a playful bounce, the album is packed with their signature bass lines and hard-hitting beats. “Free Yourself” encourages listeners to get out of their box. The synth-fueled track creates a multidimensional odyssey of deep grooves and breathtaking vocals. Our new favourite dance track! Another hit soundtrack in the making, No Geography reminds fans and critics alike why The Chemical Brothers have managed to thrive and rise above their contemporaries.
After losing her entire family in a plane crash, a newborn baby is raised in wealthy isolation by her overprotective father. She knows nothing about the rumours of a beautiful young woman, hidden from the world. When a suitor comes to win her hand, he understands far more than he should. Forced to run for his life, he escapes aboard The Porpoise, an assassin on his tail. What follows is a wild adventure that shifts into different time periods, with strong fantastical elements.

TThe Source of Self Regard: Selected Essays, Speeches, and Meditations By Toni Morrison Toni Morrison’s signature elegant style and literary prowess offers a clever commentary on society, culture and art. The rich selection of essays is divided into three partsthe first is introduced by a powerful prayer for the dead of 9/11; the second by a searching meditation on Martin Luther King Jr., and the last by a heart-wrenching eulogy for James Baldwin. Talking about everything from contested social issues to human rights, the book is definitely food for thought.

L
ouvre Abu Dhabi’s globally acclaimed Highway Gallery has returned for its second edition this spring. Ten new artworks from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection, reproduced as giant 3D sculptures or 10-metre high billboards, will appear alongside the E11 Sheikh Zayed Road from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. As drivers tune into one of the partner radio stations and approach the display, they will automatically hear a 30-second story about each artwork as part of a collaboration with Abu Dhabi Media via Radio 1 FM (100.5FM), Classic FM (91.6 FM) and Emarat FM (95.8 FM). The campaign offers visitors a comprehensive experience of discovering art, beginning on the road on their way to the museum, and continuing inside Louvre Abu Dhabi via a dedicated tour around the Highway Gallery in the museum’s multimedia guide, featuring video interviews with seven of the participating influencers. The 2019 edition of the project also features several new elements. Three of the ten masterpieces will, for the first time, be reproduced as three-dimensional sculptures. In addition, a select group of renowned personalities that represent the multicultural voices of the UAE have recorded the script for each artwork. They include entrepreneur Anas Bukhash, Fatima Al Kaabi, the UAE’s youngest inventor, chef Khaled Alsaadi, TV host Sherif Fayed, writer and producer Yasser Hareb, Zahra Lari, the first figure skater from the UAE to compete internationally, as well as Lowi Sahi, a UAE-based YouTuber. They will be joined by journalists and presenters Andrew Hosie (Classic FM), Bedoor Al Marzooqi, Mazyoon Al Hamiri and Rashid Ateeq (Emarat FM), Chiara Glorioso (Radio 1) and Rose Balston (BBC). Reflecting Louvre Abu Dhabi’s universal narrative, Highway Gallery 2.0 will include works from different moments of history and a variety of cultures, including ancient masterpieces such a vase from circa 5500 BCE, found on the UAE island of Marawah; a 4,000-year-old statuette of an ancient Bactrian Princess; as well as a 11th or 12th century statue from China representing Guanyin, a divinity of compassion. Other historic artefacts include a 15th century Islamic helmet, a 17th-century Hindu

manuscript depicting a huntress, and a Japanese suit of armour from the early 18th century. The 19th century is represented with James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s Arrangement in Grey and Black N˚1 (1871), Édouard Manet’s The Bohemian (1867) and Vincent Van Gogh’s The Dance Hall in Arles (1888), alongside a surrealist work by 20th century painter Joan Miró. On the inauguration of Highway Gallery 2.0, His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said: “The Highway Gallery is a flagship project for both the UAE and the international museum landscape, being the first initiative of its kind. “Last year’s launch was hugely successful and reaffirmed Louvre Abu Dhabi’s position as a global cultural innovator. Now it returns, to once again offer a pioneering way to engage residents and visitors alike with the museum’s collection, outside of its walls,” he continued. “The Highway Gallery is a prime example of our efforts to make art and culture an integral part of everyday life in the UAE, further enriching the lives of those who reside, work, and visit here. As the UAE celebrates the Year of Tolerance in 2019, we see the Highway Gallery as an extension of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s physical galleries, bringing its universal collection of works from different geographies and cultures, and its celebration of humanity, to the widest possible audience,” he added. The museum includes a Highway Gallery tour in its multimedia guide, featuring video interviews with the influencers participating in the campaign. The tour will be available in English, Arabic and French. Visitors can rent the guides at the museum during their visits, or they can download the tour onto their own devices through the Louvre Abu Dhabi App (available in the App Store and on Google Play). ✤ 54

LONDON
CALLING ANGELA BEITZ DISCOVERS TRUE GRAND LUXURY RIGHT IN THE HEART OF THE BRITISH CAPITAL AT THE RENOWNED
A
CORINTHIA LONDON…
s Samuel Johnson once quoted: "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is to London all that life can afford.” Apart from the great city itself, London offers so much in the way of hotels that it's hard to make a choice that you know is going to be just right. There are just so many options to choose from and so many great areas to pick that it ,can be quite the dilemma in knowing where to stay. The Corinthia London in Whitehall Place is the perfect choice and captures both style and substance for its guests. Built in the late nineteenth century and situated at the end of Northumberland Avenue directly across the Thames and from the London Eye, this hotel is the perfect location to discover all of this vibrant city. Everything is well within reach with Oxford and Regent Streets just a short walk away and and even shorter walk to Trafalgar Square and The National Gallery. Whilst staying here, all the must-visit spots are literally on your doorstep yet inside the hotel you feel relaxed and a world away from all the hustle and bustle of the busy city. While the hotel is truly opulent, it also manages to mix elegance and character giving off the vibe of a stylish boutique hotel with both warmth and history. You won't be able to avoid the stunning Baccarat chandelier in the lobby lounge with its 1,001 crystals sparkling overhead in the Crystal Moon Lounge where traditional afternoon tea is served. This area is buzzing with both hotel guests and people here for meetings and high tea and it boasts a great atmosphere. This is a truly beautiful part of the hotel with a quaint florist off to one side of the entrance selling the exact floral arrangements that are dotted around the hotel. Staff are sophisticated and welcoming and nothing seems too much trouble; our check in and baggage was handled brilliantly and they were very helpful in giving us any directions or help necessary. The Corinthia’s 294 rooms, including 40 suites and seven two-storey penthouses, are decorated in gorgeous, contemporary hues with high ceilings and large windows and are simply some of the smartest looking hotel rooms we've seen. There is so much attention to detail put into the rooms and the décor; we especially love the small touches. The rooms are tastefully styled in warm tones mixed with bold hints and provide the perfect balance between the history of the hotel and the modern feel of today. Space is abundant in even the smallest room which is a novelty for a London hotel. The marble bathrooms are a real feature of the hotel and are spacious and luxurious with a built-in TV at the foot of the bath and high-end ESPA branded toiletries are replenished daily. There is also a huge rain shower, and heated floor and towel rack for the chillier months.

This is the perfect place to rejuvenate and to take a long hot bath after walking around the city all day. The hotel has many great dining venues and there are four bars and two restaurants in total. The Northall celebrates the Great British kitchen showcasing the breadth of Britain’s culinary strengths. Breakfast is served here also and it is a real treat with excellent service. The menu focuses on seasonality, sustainability and traceability through close relationships with artisan producers. The breathtaking dining room is adorned with glittering mirrored panels and expansive picture windows, while two private dining areas offer ultimate seclusion for special celebrations and corporate events. The Northall Bar is the home of chic socialising in London. It's the ideal place to meet for a glass of bubbly or classic cocktail, and it offers a lunch and dinner menu for casual occasions. Bassoon Bar is also an excellent venue, designed by David Collins Studio, Bassoon is a London destination bar with attitude. Combining a relaxed and intimate ambience with a stimulating dash of theatre, Bassoon pays homage to the arts of the finest bartenders in the capital. The absolute must-try is the high tea at Crystal Moon Lounge; illuminated by the spectacular Baccarat chandelier and decorated with effortless flair, the Crystal Moon Lounge is the perfect venue for afternoon tea. Tantalising cakes and fancies are inspired by each season, served alongside a selection of teas and the finest bubbly. AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh
EMBRACING MODEST FASHION With Ramadan around the corner, we usually shift our outfit choices to more modest wear in respect of the Holy Month and, of course, retailers are taking note of this by dedicating sections or whole collections on their store rails and shopping apps especially for Ramadan. Brands such as ASOS, NAMSHI, and Ounass to name but a few have become go-to platforms to find all the attire you need for a modest look. Now, shopping online for modest fashion is just a click away. This trend has found its way into mainstream fashion too, as we have witnessed a growing interest between women from all walks of life who are keen on dressing modestly and, thankfully, the market is tapping into this drift to cater to what women want. Stemming from the sartorial needs of women from different faiths or even just personal preferences, modest wear gained recognition in the narrative of contemporary fashion. Not all women are fans of short hemlines and bare midriffs (and I am one of these women) so with the versatility of options now available in the market, it’s a sigh of relief to find a wide range of modest yet fashion-forward options – no matter the occasion. An exciting addition to online shopping is the e-luxury website The Modist which is home to all high-end luxury brands for the fashion-savvy woman of today. It’s the go-to platform for all things modest which is gaining international exposure in the media due to high demand in the market. Modest is definitely the new black.
Yours fashionably, Amal 82

SIMPLY PERFECT Amici which roughly translates as “friends” in Italian couldn’t be a more apt name for the intimate and somewhat quaint restaurant at Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi. FACT’s David Tapley visits the beautiful venue for a reminder of what Italian cuisine can be when approached with simplicity. fact magazine

W
ith a penchant for over-sized restaurants in our capital city, the scaled back approach at Amici is greatly appreciated and allows for the easy creation of atmosphere within the dining room. This simplistic approach is also evident in the food and the decor, which remains modern and unoffensive without fully committing to a theme. An open kitchen offers some meal time theatrics and provides the majority of guests a vantage point to watch their pizzas and pastas being skillfully prepared. Glass wine casings line the back wall close to the bar and act as a showcase for the various wine reserves and bottles available. Amici's defining feature though, is undoubtedly the central light fitting made up of hanging green glass that sets the colour scheme for the restaurant. From the place mats to the etched cutlery and pristine napkins, everything is in sync. The menu at Amici is actually rather concise but this is by no means a bad thing; broken down into antipasti, zuppe, pasta, second and pizza. While not offering the most expansive selection of Italian dishes, what is available are rustic highlights that offer plenty of appeal. Gravitating towards a more causal dining experience when the majority of the city’s Italian restaurants are geared towards an upmarket and strictly fine dining mantra. In that sense, Amici is refreshing. From the antipasti we select the Fritto Misto (AED78), a classic Italian dish of lightly breaded calamari, prawns and sardines which is generously portioned and covered in a moreish Tabasco emulsion. The dish requires little more than a squeeze of lemon to really bring out the flavours of the seafood. We also enjoy a large portion of Burrata (AED95) served upon a bed of spinach salad and cherry tomatoes and drizzled with a particularly nice basil dressing which works in perfect conjunction with the creamy cheese. Of the pastas which include a beef lasagne, duck ragout fettuccine and a seafood risotto, we enjoy the Ravioli (AED85). Beautifully plated and stuffed full of burrata (there’s a pattern developing here) before being sprinkled with a Taggiasca olive crumb for texture. The six parcels of pasta are served with a rich tomato sauce that could be a condiment in itself. We’re too full to experience the likes of grilled spring chicken, rack of lamb or oven baked sea bass but can’t leave without sampling the pizza. The Burrata E Speck (AED82) offers a thin pizza base topped with tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, burrata cheese and beef speck and makes for a wholesome dish that we would happily order again. Of the six desserts available at Amici, the Tiramisu (AED40) is not to be missed! The dessert represents everything you would expect from the classic Italian dessert. The coffee isn’t too strong but soaks perfectly into the base of ladyfingers, while lashings of thick

cream is piped heavily on top with immaculate precision before being dusted generously with cocoa. Arriving at the table, the dish is then poured with warm chocolate sauce from a Moka pot and adorned with chocolate covered coffee beans. The indulgent tiramisu is more than enough for two people to share and represents a standout dish that has the potential to attract diners from all over the city. Amici left us entirely impressed and it’s easy to see why the venue has been gaining traction with Abu Dhabi diners in recent months thanks to their popular Thursday Aperitivo night. The simplistic nature of the restaurant and its focus on classic Italian dishes prepared well makes it a must visit for anyone looking for hearty dining on Yas Island. ✤

uch of the appeal of Stock Burger Co. lies in its casual approach and the feeling that you’re not dining within the confines of a hotel. It successfully manages to encapsulate the industrial feel of London’s Shoreditch or New York’s Williamsburg neighbourhood via the clever use of exposed brick walls emblazoned with logos and slogans, in addition to exposed ducting that feels part warehouse and part licensed diner. We pass through the open plan space and sink into a comfortable red leather booth which offers an excellent vantage point for sports viewing, with matches displayed on numerous screens dotted throughout the spacious venue. Staff maintain the casual and fun approach which is engrained into the Stock Burger Co. ethos, building a friendly rapport with diners and offering genuine recommendations from the menu which specialises in (you guessed it) burgers and craft hops. Refreshingly, the menu remains tightly focused on the burgers and grills while ensuring the quality of ingredients. All of the beef used by the kitchen is exclusively supplied by Springbok Butchery and served in the signature brioche buns for which the restaurant has fast become renowned. We begin with a generous portion of veggie nachos (AED47), piled high with melted cheddar cheese, a mild salsa, sour cream, jalapeños and guacamole. Fully-loaded doesn’t quite describe the sheer amount of toppings covering the crisp tortilla chips, meaning each mouthful provides a different flavour from the combination of ingredients. We also sample the buffalo wings (AED40) which continue the trend of ‘go big or go home’ with six large wings slathered in a fiery sauce and served with crudités. The wings with their crisp skin are tender and moist to the point of being addictive but, believe us, when we say that you will get messy devouring these. When it comes to the burgers there are ten options to choose from including the intriguing Nachos Burger (stuffed with guacamole and jalapeños) the 31st Street Burger (with its hopbattered fish and lemon caper mayo) or the signature Boss Burger (two charcoal grilled patties, veal bacon, Gruyère and cheddar cheese). With such ambitious flavour combinations on display, we feel inclined to embrace our Middle Eastern location by selecting the Camel Burger (AED65). Comprising a chargrilled camel patty, topped with Arabic pickles, tabbouleh, fried onion and halloumi cheese. There may be a lot going on with each mouthful but the soft brioche bun gives way to the camel meat which is almost gamey in flavour, before the taste of the tabbouleh comes through. There may be a lot of ingredients but they complement each other seamlessly without overpowering one another. Stock Burger Co. also offers the option to build your own burgers and with customisation and dietary requirement becoming such an integral part of the current dining landscape, it’s pleasing to see this taken into consideration. For those less enamoured with burgers the ‘no burger, no problem’ section of the menu includes slow-cooked beef rib, a giant prawn 90

skewer, meat lovers pizza and pub grub favourites such as fish and chips. A selection of milkshakes and sundaes are offered for dessert with the appeal being that they can be made ‘boozy’ upon request. These extravagant shakes come in a variety of flavours such as strawberry lime, double chocolate and marshmallow and look as though they have the potential to induce a diabetic coma. With so many burger and milkshake joints in Abu Dhabi, the advantages of Stock Burger Co. are obvious. Not only is it licensed but it also offers good value for money when compared to many similar venues around town. With a semi-circular bar at the far end of the venue, it manages to successfully blend bar and restaurant into one environment, making for a comfortable place for an after-work drink or an entire meal of comfort food. You’ll be pleased to learn that as of late April, Stock Burger Co. has launched its delicious Friday brunch which we look forward to experiencing very soon! ✤

HIGH-TECH SOLUTIONS Skin in need of some TLC? Iridium Spa at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has the perfect facial to really get your skin sorted out, as FACT’s Angela Beitz finds out…
I
t's hard to keep up with our busy schedules and sometimes our skincare regime falls by the wayside. If your complexion needs some pampering due to the change in the weather and generally needs a shake up then I can almost guarantee that you will love some time at Iridium Spa. This spa needs no introduction, it was a winner at our Fact Spa & Wellness Awards last year and is located off to the side with a separate entrance at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. This result-driven spa has also added in some new menu options over the last six months including exclusive wellness rituals that focus on the concept of ‘time dedicated to you’. As soon as you step into the venue you will feel tranquil and relaxed. The sound of water falling puts you in a zen mood almost instantly. I’m ushered to the changing rooms and would be happy to even just spend the afternoon here with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool at my disposal. The changing rooms are truly beautiful with art deco touches and large black chandeliers that are stunning. Be sure to bring your bathers so that you can enjoy these facilities as they are super lovely and will get you in the right frame of mind for your spa treatment. As my skin has been problematic of late, I am trying the Hydra Cure Facial. This is an effective treatment that deep-cleans and detoxifies skin while relieving stress that includes an innovative enzymatic detox and steam to open and purify pores as well as a meticulous extraction process, revealing extraordinarily soft and radiant skin. This triple enzymatic exfoliation system has a long lasting renewing and rejuvenating effect. I am shown to the tranquil treatment room and while my feet are being scrubbed, my therapist Ana suggests doing a full skin analysis to really get to the cause of what's happening with my skin. I lay on the lush treatment table and Ana uses a small hand held device which uses 3D imaging to show results for acne, pores, wrinkles, sun damage and texture. This then links back to a small iPad which shows the results based on the average of where you should be and where you actually are. My issues are my pores and sun damage which are both above average. I was a bit startled but Ana assures me that this is normal for people living here due to dry air, hot weather and sun exposure – and she tells me it can be prevented. The facial starts with a double cleanse to remove any make-up or impurities and surface dirt. Ana then gives my skin a really good looking over. My face is then lightly exfoliated and a toner is applied. The main USP of this facial is the triple enzymatic exfoliation using Glycolic Acid. It starts with a glycolic acid applied to my face and neck which tingles slightly but is normal. This is left on for ten minutes and then a glycolic powder is applied over it which again slightly tingles. What it is doing is deeply cleaning and resurfacing your pores right down to the deepest layers of your skin. The final step is Glycolic Gel that is applied on top and is meant to bubble to really get down to the the surface of the pores. This feels weird but you know it's really deep cleaning - it has the same feeling of bicarb soda and vinegar mixed together. This is then all rubbed off to reveal very clean and smooth skin. The next step is extracting stubborn dirt in pores, and then a beautiful mask that is left on for 20 minutes while Ana massages my arms. After this is done, the face is applied with serum, moisturiser, eye cream and spf. This facial gives immediate results and I cannot believe how much more balanced and hydrated my skin looks and feels. It's also such an amazing feeling to know you have very clean pores and I would definitely recommend doing this once a month. The Cure Facial really works to eliminates toxins, helps repair cellular damage and deeply hydrates, restoring your skin's radiance and the results were evident for a good week afterwards. ✤ 92

Once this is done my hair is blow-dried into soft, bouncy curls to reveal stylishly blonde hair and soft layers. This is the best haircut and blow-dry I have experienced in nearly eight years in the capital which may sound like a big call but it’s no exaggeration. f you’re not yet familiar with this brand, Rossano Ferretti is a huge name in Italy and he has now built a strong reputation worldwide. He has transformed the tresses of Kate Middleton, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence and more and now the celebrity hairdresser who is famous for his 'Method' technique, has two very popular salons in the UAE that have made a huge impression. I was lucky enough to visit the Abu Dhabi branch for the famous Method Cut and some fresh blonde colour. This salon is not like most in the capital; visiting the space gives an ultra chic vibe with the highest level of professionalism. The fully converted and reimagined villa houses the new hair spa which allows customers to enjoy the unique Rossano Ferretti experience from start to finish, with an extensive range of treatments from the signature cut, specialist colouring services to expertly executed manicures, pedicures, facials (including HydroPeptide), massages, waxing and more. In regards to hair care products, Rossano Ferretti has its own brand of products which just adds to his expertise in this field. The process starts with the colour and the hairdresser suggests some subtle blonde foils to enhance my already light natural shade of hair. Foils are done at Rossano Ferretti in a different way. They are carefully applied and then cotton wool and cling film is used to secure them so that you get a natural line, rather than a harsh stripe. Genius. What are some of your favourite hotspots in the city and why? Abu Dhabi has a lot of hotspots that are ideal to “recharge and refuel” - my weekends are reserved for “family time” with my husband, Abhi and my daughter, Panache who is four-yearsold. We spend some good quality time down on the Corniche, especially when the weather is good. It’s a great place to go for a walk, bike, eat or just chill out! In the past few years, there has also been a great growth when it comes to shops and restaurants and it has become such a lively city thanks to all the events that are organised here. What keeps you excited about working in the hospitality industry, especially in Abu Dhabi... Hospitality as we see today especially
in a luxury segment is evolving. Whereas in the past, luxury often felt prescribed, today it is defined by the guest and is therefore more personal and takes into account different tastes and cultural references. This basically means we as ‘Marketers’ have our work cut out for us! We need to curate content - tell a story that is worthwhile and which also sets us apart from our competitors. These are some exciting times to work in hospitality and especially in Abu Dhabi, which has reinforced its position as a global tourism destination. It’s an ideal destination for entertainment and family holidays, whether it’s the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. or the recent opening of Qasr Al Watan that you’re visiting.
