THE LOUNGE OPENED AGAIN in mid-October, bringing its beautiful hotel courtyard to life after taking a cool break over the summer months. Following the successful Oktoberfest celebrations, a yearly tradition since the hotel’s opening 25 years ago, the courtyard will be transformed into the contemporary outdoor lounge serving up delicious bites and drinks, alongside shisha and fun games. HUNGRY FOR HOI AN With a whole-new selection of sharing appetisers, signature mains, zingy curries and citrusinfused flavours, the new menu at Hoi An is perfect for Abu Dhabi’s discerning diners. HOI AN IS THE Vietnamese restaurant that is known for its authenticity, particularly for the stocks that form the base of the traditional pho noodle soup, concocted for several hours. For this season, Ta Van Ninh, chef de cuisine at Hoi An, has introduced a variety of new dishes including the classic wagyu beef and vegetable stew, lotus-leaf wrapped ginger seabass and spicy curry noodles with fragrant chicken. Shellfish fanatics can opt for the coconut prawns served with fruit salsa, baked oysters or fresh whole Canadian lobster with lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. Those looking to sample the diversity offered in Vietnamese cuisine can enjoy a five-course set menu with the chef’s favourites for AED340. For an additional AED240, the Chef’s Creation menu includes wine pairing. Reiner Lupfer, executive chef at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, said: “We believe that the elements of wellbeing and healthy living are easily incorporated into Vietnamese cuisine, which strikes the fine balance between hot, spicy, sweet, sour and exotic flavours. This is an art, and to maintain this balance we use only the best ingredients. “At Shangri-La, we source fresh produce like lemongrass, lime, ginger, chilli, honey, coconut and seafood from Asian markets and local farmers to support sustainability,” he added. “With our new menu, we want to give our guest dishes that are great in 16

flavour and texture and can be easily shared. Vietnamese dishes can be consumed daily as they are light and easy digestible.” A highlight of the new menu at Hoi An is the sharing plates selection, which features fresh rice paper rolls, duck sausages wrapped in betel leaves, grilled shrimp skewers and pan-fried scallops. Showcasing the calibre of the kitchen team are the crispy lobster ravioli, duo of crab with pomelo salad, wok-fried foie gras and yellow fin tuna tartare. The sharing options are available at AED208 for a selection of three, AED318 for five dishes and AED388 for seven dishes. For mains, Ta Van Ninh recommends signature dishes like the tiger prawns in red curry served in a pineapple shell, steamed whole seabass wrapped in a banana leaf and the orange blossom duck breast. Hoi An is also home to a wide selection of traditional soups, rice and noodle dishes as well as its choice of desserts. The fruit spring roll served with ice cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce acts is a perfect end to the meal at this popular dining destination. ✤

HELLO, WAGAMAMA! Popular eatery and global brand Wagamama has opened its first restaurant in the capital at Abu Dhabi Mall, one of city’s most-loved shopping centres, bringing the eatery’s number of locations across the UAE to eight. THE OPENING OF WAGAMAMA marks a new chapter in the wider expansion plans for the restaurant brand across the UAE and a growing presence in neighbouring GCC countries. PHOTOGRAPHY HAVEN The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Manarat Al Saadiyat have launched a new Photography Studio that will contribute to enhancing the creative scene and fostering talent within the emirate’s photography community. BASED AT MANARAT AL SAADIYAT, in Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District, the Photography Studio will offer an essential platform for photography enthusiasts, professionals and artists to improve their skills, expose them to new techniques and the latest approaches in the field, and assist them in maintaining a steady and professional growth of their talent. The facilities will include a studio available for rent, a large workspace including a makeup room and dressing room, and digital lab. The launch of the studio will be accompanied with the opening of a solo exhibition displaying the works of Emirati photographer Jassim Al Awadhi, who has received a lifetime appreciation award for this photography from HH Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE, for his photography work. The opening will also feature a talk by Al Awadhi about his journey as a pioneer photographer in the UAE. YEAR OF ZAYED ART EXHIBIT Park Rotana Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Abu-Dhabi based renowned artist Annabelle Smith Bigno, will showcase the Year of Zayed Art Exhibition until December 8. STANDING TALL UAE-based social enterprise 81 Designs, best-known for its embroidered artworks, will showcase commemorative pieces through a special collaboration with Bokja at the 10th edition of Abu Dhabi Art.

UAE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE 81 DESIGNS and Lebanese fabrication studio Bokja, hope to inspire and empower women through a commemorative artwork titled ‘Standing Tall,’ scheduled to be exhibited at the 10th edition of Abu Dhabi Art from November 14 to 17. Through the installation, the two women-led organisations take their stance on peace, openness and respect. The sculptural piece speaks about the story of the remarkable women who contributed to the project which aims to support women, particularly refugees who are in need, by giving them hope and renewed sense of purpose in life. ‘Standing Tall’ comprises five female sculptures made up of stacked poufs (cylindrical cushioned seats) each representing a female attribute: independent, empathic, compassionate, nurturant, and strong. Adorning the sculptures that make up the installation are 100 fabric works featuring words from a poem written by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. Each hanging fabric is an intricately crafted scarf with heartfelt expressions of hope, love, and unity. ‘Standing Tall’ salutes the greatness of women and celebrates the Year of Zayed. It features fabric works that were 30

handmade by female refugees living inside the Palestinian refugee camp Ein Al-Helweh in South Lebanon using a timehonoured Palestinian embroidery technique ‘Tatreez.’ The project is a tribute to the Founding Father of the Nation who celebrates 100th birth anniversary this year and was known as an advocate of equal rights and opportunities for women, a vision shared by 81 Designs and Bokja. Nadine Y Maalouf, co-founder of 81 Designs, said: “Known to be a leader who valued and respected people regardless of nationality, status, religion and gender, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan advocated strongly for the rights of women. “His wisdom in recognising the equal contribution of women to society resonates with our endeavors toward the empowerment of women, our new project “Standing Tall” aims to celebrate and give tribute to women,” she added. Each individual composition/sculpture is retailed at USD 8000, while each fragment that can be worn as a scarf is retailed at USD 600. The commemorative work will be presented at 81 Designs’ booth located at the community section - Gallery S during Abu Dhabi Art, taking place at Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. Bokja is a Lebanon-based surface fabrication studio well known for its quirky assemblage surfaces transformed into carefully curated objects, which range from furniture to oneoff art pieces. Bokja art pieces aim to edit and filter a chaotic amalgamation of designs, colours and cultures to craft meaningful messages relevant to today’s needs. “It has been our team’s honour to work with and witness the astounding craftsmanship of the talented women of 81 Designs. It has been Bokja’s aim to amplify voices to be heard in today’s world by means of intriguing art pieces,” said Huda Baroudi of Bokja Designs. “Allowing these women from Palestine to ‘stand tall’ through their pieces has been an incredible experience.” ✤

festive charm engulfs this small mountain enclave with its narrow winding streets piled high with freshly fallen snow, fir trees strung with twinkling fairy lights and the vast peaks and pistes of the Alpes all around, with Mont Blanc the highest peak in Europe front and centre on the horizon. Named after the elevation at which it sits, Courchevel 1850 forms part of the world’s largest ski resort, encompassing three valleys, 600km of ski runs and over 160 ski lifts. A haven for winter sports enthusiasts and luxury jet setters, the focus of this quaint mountain retreat is the Les Grandes Alpes Private Hotel; a property which over the years has taken on many roles, beginning as a post office, before transitioning into a bank and ski school, and then opening as the very first hotel in Courchevel back in 1948, the same year as the resort’s first ever ski lift. Located in the very heart of upmarket Courchevel 1850, the Les Grandes Alpes is an upscale mountain property benefitting from a prime position on the piste and making for one of the only ski in/ski out hotels in town. Sitting alongside the likes of luxury brands such as Bulgari, Louis Vuitton and Chanel, the stone facade of the building makes for the stereotypical representation of a luxury alpine retreat, complete with wooden balconies and rooftops heaving under the weight of freshly fallen snow. As if stuck in a state of eternal Christmas, Les Grand Alpes is the perfect marriage of chalet and luxury hotel that leans heavily into the high-end market. A whimsical winter wonderland awaits guests from the moment they arrive at the property, with a festive staircase aligned with foliage and wicker creations.

The property, which was remodeled in 2012 comprises of nine apartments and a total of 30 bedrooms and suites, with the unique layout of Les Grandes Alpes allowing for complete customisation when it comes to room configuration. The four-bedroom Emerald Suite occupies the entire fourth floor of the property and clocks in at an impressive 300m2, offering remarkable views over the tree-lined slopes and numerous ski lifts. South facing dining and living rooms represent the ultimate in comfort, with a circular glass fireplace representing the heart of this particular penthouse. Curled up on the sofas with a mug of hot chocolate and fur blankets while watching the falling snow makes for a truly memorable evening and one of the (many) highlights of a stay at Les Grand Alpes. These spacious suites have more to offer than the view. A professional kitchen, where private chefs can create culinary marvels is just the tip of the iceberg. Similarly, the children’s play room is not necessarily what you might expect, but offers the perfect solution/excuse for adults to venture into the suite’s very own miniature spa, complete with massage and steam rooms that complement the luxury values of a property where it would appear nothing is too much trouble! Les Grand Alpes offers an undeniably luxury experience wrapped up in a contemporary and quirky charm thanks to French interior designer Jean-Marc Mouchet, where Arctic and Antarctic animals are utilised in both artworks and decorative touches throughout - from bold polar bear prints to the plastic penguins that line the lobby. Much like the property and its facilities, service is premium, taking the notion of fivestar luxury and raising the bar that bit further. guest experience at all times, one where no request is too much or too little, resulting in Les Grand Alpes feeling like a genuine home away from home (with lots of snow!). The bedrooms are particularly impressive, with their wooden cladding helping to create a feeling of alpine adventure. Insanely comfortable beds are laden with pillows and fur blankets and skylights cleverly positioned above, ensure guests can marvel at a star-filled sky through a funnel of snow as they drift off to sleep. Luxury touches are noted and appreciated from the fur-lined slippers and bathrobes through to the heated toilet seats and Hermes toiletries.

LUXURY DINING

Catering to the elite clientele of Couchevel 1850, the dining destinations at Les Grandes Alpes are expectedly high-end. For the après-ski experience, many guests will flock to Bellini’s, a lounge bar situated adjacent to the hotel’s reception area. As the namesake suggests, the peach Bellini reigns supreme at this late night establishment and comes served in ornate crystal glassware using freshly imported peaches representative of French decadence at its finest. There’s also Le Bizan a small sushi restaurant situated at the rear of the bar, with minimal seating. A sushi spot is perhaps the last thing diners might expect high in the Alpes but the new style cuisine which fuses together both Japanese and Mediterranean elements, astounds in both flavour and presentation, headed up by the Executive Chef of Zuma in Rome.

SKI AND SPA

When it comes to recreation, guests have the opportunity to ski or spa. Zooming down the mountainside certainly offers a thrill and even beginners are catered for via the in-house team of friendly and encouraging ski instructors. Getting kitted up while sat upon Hermes leather upholstery and slotting our feet into pre-heated ski boots has got to be the ultimate way to start an alpine adventure and we fear that there

is no going back now we know just how opulent a ski experience can be. By comparison, the Bellefontaine Spa offers a more subdued experience via a variety of bespoke treatments undertaken by expert therapists, utilising ingredients from the Alps including glacial water. While our suite had a mini spa, it doesn’t quite compare to what the Bellefontaine offers guests at Les Grand Alpes. An indoor heated swimming pool takes on the appearance of a luxury boathouse offering views of the ski lifts and snow-capped peaks from the comfort of regal chaise longues, while solace from the cold can be found in the sauna and steam bath. Though the resort is a 2.5 hour drive from Geneva along precarious mountain roads hugging close to the limestone mountainside, the demand for luxury prevails. With this specific clientele in mind and a money-is-no-object attitude, private helicopter charters can transport guests over the Alpes to Switzerland and Lake Geneva in less than half an hour. A breathtaking experience on its own! Winter sports enthusiasts flock to Courchevel for the skiing, mountains and mesmerising natural beauty. With the crisp mountain air providing a brisk revitalisation, it’s the cold that is most noticeable and at minus 18 degrees it feels as though your heart is being grasped by jack frost, or perhaps it’s just the magnificent views that leave us in a state of perpetual awe. But the beauty is that you don’t have to ski or snowboard, for the wealth of activities available in this compact mountain village is quite remarkable. From spa days to dog sledging and even the high-speed toboggan run which hurtles the brave down a 3km trail through alpine forests and snow drifts – there’s snow boredom here (see what we did there). ✤

On-road keeps things gliding as efficiently as can be for day-to-day driving, especially if you’re cruising down the E11 between the Emirates. What impressed us the most is the Patrol’s remarkable capability in sand mode, which enables you to drive safely, quickly and skillfully in a desert environment and, in fact, on the rolling dunes. If you’re comfortable enough to do so, just like the professional rally drivers and those who take herds of tourists on their chosen dune bashing escapades, then you’re going to feel right at home in the Nissan Patrol V6, especially in the desert. One of the toughest aspects of driving in the desert is the fear of getting stuck. Not in the Patrol. The car’s Rear Differential Lock allows you to pull out of mud or loose sand easily by distributing torque evenly to the rear wheels. To top that off, and with potential winter rains forecast, the driving force transferred by the Active Brake Limited Slip from a slipping wheel to a wheel with more traction is amplified by Helical LSD. In the Patrol, you can start safely and smoothly even on slippery slopes or roads, and drive powerfully in style. As if Nissan hasn’t been breaking enough records, in a world-first, the new Patrol employs the advanced Hydraulic Body Motion Control System with 4-wheel independent suspension. rugged and sandy terrain, while delivering a comfortable ride in the city too. synchronisation and the LED puddle lamp set the tone at the very outset. Inside the cockpit, it’s equipped with a Bluetooth hands-free phone system and Navigation System synchronised with Nissan Intelligent Key and a Push Button ignition. We’ve all been on Sheikh Zayed Road at peak time when traffic is unpredictable – it slows down, there’s congestion, it picks back up, only to then slow down instantly and have you stuck at an exit for what seems like days. The Nissan Patrol V6’s Intelligent Cruise Control slows your vehicle to maintain the desired distance between you and slow traffic, and re-accelerates to your preset speed and distance as the traffic flow picks up. The Intelligent Distance Control helps the driver release the throttle and applies the brakes as needed in slowing traffic – making wait time on the roads a complete breeze. The Intelligent Around View Monitor uses four cameras; the monitor displays a bird’s eye view of the vehicle to help you park the Patrol in even the tightest spots. With a parking assist guide displayed on the monitor, supported by Back up Collision Intervention, any moving object is detected from behind the vehicle. Off-road Monitor is another Nissan first, as it provides real-time information such as tyre conditions - steer angle, slip, pressure - and compass, to ensure you’re always in control. When it comes to safety, the Patrol is something else in comparison to many other SUVs we’ve tested. It incorporates the most advanced Nissan Intelligent Mobility features such as the world-renowned Safety Shield concept that ‘vehicles help protect people’. The revised brake system, along with state-ofthe-art safety technologies makes it one of the safest-ever SUVs in its class, promising a trustworthy driving environment. Forward Collision Warning uses the system’s laser range finder, it alerts the driver of a potential collision by providing a visual and audible warning, which is just as smart as both the Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention and the Intelligent Lane Intervention. The first uses sensors to alert you to vehicles detected in your blind spots and helps you avoid them if your vehicle approaches the lane markers, whilst the latter helps avoid unintended lane departure in bringing the vehicle back to the lane by applying the brakes.

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh SUBJECT: HELLO ISTANBUL! My trip to Istanbul was nothing short of magic. It is a fantastic city, very pleasant to the eye, with serious traffic but which city with over 15 million inhabitants doesn’t suffer from a little commotion on the roads? Everything runs in an organised chaos, and that gives Istanbul its charm. I spent 10 days with my hubby discovering its rich history, architecture, food, and shopping in local boutiques and charming markets. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, so we planned our trip in October to enjoy the breezy weather. The people and the food are what makes Istanbul extra special and you will be surrounded by street food kiosks for a bite or three during your strolls. The beginning of our stay was in the Sultanhamet area that is home to the most renowned cultural attractions, a mere walking distance from each other. Hagia Sophia, once a church turned to a mosque and now a museum, and Basilica Cistren, an ancient underground water reserve which was used as a set location for the 1963 James Bond film From Russia With Love. Topkapı Palace, which served as the main residences and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans and the enchanting Blue Mosque known for its bluish interior decoration also take prime position here. So this is your ideal base for sightseeing in Istanbul – just don’t forget to pack your walking shoes! After exploring the cultural retreat lined with cobblestone streets, we walk to the Grand Bazaar, the largest covered market in the world featuring goods and fine crafts from all over Turkey and beyond. After three nights of exploring old Istanbul, we check out and head to our next hotel on the European side located in Nişantaşı, which is a popular shopping and residential district and one of Istanbul’s most exclusive neighborhoods that includes fashion houses, cafés and restaurants. Another perk of the hotel location is that it is only 300 meters away from the metro station which was our main mode of transportation to avoid traffic congestion. Besides the metro, we were walking nonstop which was ideal given the amount of baklavas and kunafas we were consuming throughout our trip – I highly recommend Hafiz Mustafa and Mado for a truly Turkish sugar fix. TOP 5: VISIT ISTANBUL Turkish Breakfast A traditional Turkish breakfast is better known as 'kahvaltı' and the star of the breakfast is the Simit which is their traditional doughy, sesame-seed coated bread bagel and the ideal canvas for the array of fresh cheeses such as feta and kashkaval served with sides of jam, olives, eggs, veggies, and sucuk (spicy Turkish sausage). I tried the one served in Bazlama Kahvalti café in Nişantaşı and it comes with unlimited Turkish Tea. IG: @bazlama.kahvalti

Shopping in Istanbul Turkish brands are my favourite. For high end, you must check Beyman and Vakko, which you can find in their upscale malls Istinya Park and Zorlu Centre. Both these malls are a great place for people watching too. For high street Turkish brands, there is Ipekyol, Perspective, Roman and ADL that you can find in malls and on Nişantaşı street.

Prince Islands One of our trip highlights was our 90-minute ferry ride to Prince Islands, which was visually stunning. The island is an oasis of peace and silence, which is also known for having no cars. You can rent a bicycle to explore upon arrival or opt for hopping on a horse drawn carriage for a tour. Along the shoreline, you can find seafood restaurants lined up with a pristine view of the ocean.

Dolmabahçe Palace A landmark that goes back to the Ottoman empire and is the largest palace in Turkey with 285 rooms, 46 halls, six baths (hammam) and 68 toilets. No pictures are allowed inside however it is worth the almost two-hour tour as its opulent and lavish décor is awe-inspiring. The structure of the palace from the outside and open gate overlooking the Bosphorus will have you take more than a dozen snaps. A café is also right next to the palace which is a great option for resting the legs and savouring Turkish cusine.

Ortakoy Ortakoy Square and the historical heritage of the Ortakoy Mosque is the heart of the Ortakoy which is flocked with tourists due to its beautiful views of the Bosphorus and its bridge. Expect to walk around and find numerous small shops selling fashion and home accessories along with souveniors and their baked potatoes known as kumpir. f you’re craving Italian fare but don’t want to pay through the roof, then we’ve got the perfect night out for you. The Sofitel Abu Dhabi’s Parmigiana restaurant has just kicked off its Thursday night Buon Cibo evening again; this contemporary venue offers classic Italian dining in a relaxed yet lovely atmosphere with gorgeous views over Abu Dhabi Corniche. The restaurant offers a wide array of Italian classics from bruschetta, pasta, pizza and parmigiana dishes. The theme night is cleverly thought out with delicious options including unlimited offerings of antipasti and pizza. The restaurant is casual but has a homely feel with black and white chequered table cloths and a few small private dining enclaves. The evening starts with an impressive spread of antipasti, served buffet style with everything from bruschetta, salads, cold cuts, seafood, cheese and bread. Be sure to try the carpaccio with its perfectly cold, thin slices of beef tenderloin, drizzled with lemon and finished with a sprinkling of parmesan. This dish will whet your appetite for what's to come. Next is the pizza which is served to your table with lots of different toppings to choose from. The pepperoni pizza is a must try along with the vegetarian which is loaded with grilled veggies and has lots of flavour. The traditional Margherita hits the spot nicely too – with cheese oozing onto our palates. They will keep coming with the pizza until you ask them to stop and you could easily spend a night alone just eating this carby goodness. Even though we’ve given the pizza a nudge, it’s time to order our main dish. There are risotto and pasta options alongside other hearty mains to choose from. While the pasta options look very tempting, we opt to go with the Tagliata Di Filetto Con Rucola Scaglie Balsamico and the Chicken Parmigiana. The parmigiana is a real hit and also comes with a side of al dente tomato spaghetti. The large piece of crumbed chicken is so moreish topped off with marinara sauce and lots of cheese – uncomplicated and delicious. The Tagliata is also one to order with smoky Angus beef on a bed of rocket salad with a balsamic dressing. Mouth-watering to say the least! We finish off with the Tiramisu and some gelato and we’re feeling very satisfied. The theme night is excellent value for money with the soft drinks package at AED169 net per person and the premium drinks package at AED189 net per person, you will be hard pressed to find something of similar quality and price. The service is friendly and helpful and Buon Cibo is the perfect way to start your weekend with bellies full and a smile on your face! ✤

The new a la carte offering is set in the beautiful homely interiors of the restaurant with large murals, elegant décor and comfy seating rounding off the rustic atmosphere. Inspired by a Tuscan villa, the venue creates the feel of visiting the home of an Italian noble at his summer residence where family and friends meet, welcomed by the chef-patron. The food complements the design, bridging tradition and elegance. You’ll feel at ease from the moment you enter; it’s like walking into your aunt’s house for a family meal where everyone is pitching in, in the kitchen! Serving hand-crafted, regional Italian specialities from Tuscany, Umbria, and Emilia-Romagna, the menu is composed to orchestrate the best recipes from these areas. Special imports of cheese, prosciutto, cold cuts, and salamis emphasise the thoughtful approach and quality level of the brunch. All pasta is made in-house with raw ingredients sourced freshly from Italy. The cuisine certainly takes centre stage with the friendly team welcoming you to start with a glorious table of all the bread goals you could imagine. Grab a plate and take your pick of the freshest loaves, baguettes, rolls and, our favourite Italian staple, the fluffy focaccia. Make sure to pour yourself some artesian olive oil and balsamic for the all-important bread dipping ceremony at the start of every meal! 88

Once you’re sat with your beverage of choice in hand, take the time to really explore the menu; it’s full of everything from light starters to filling mains and a whole host of dishes that cater to dietary requirements too. There’s homemade lobster and prawns ravioli, grilled rosemary and mint lamb rack or salmon fillet with a mascarpone and parmesan sauce, cooked with passion and flair in true Italian style by Chef Rosario and his team, and served piping hot to the table. We opted for two Italian classics to begin with; the mozzarella tomato salad where the pesto really shines, and the exquisite

parmigiana, a baked dish made up of sliced eggplant filling, layered with cheese and tomato sauce – it’s everything we wanted, and more. When they say “winter warmer” – this parmigiana is what we think of, simple yet so, so delicious. For mains, with one of the team being gluten free, we were ecstatic to find a number of appealing dishes designed to accommodate food intolerances and allergies. And so, the vegan pumpkin risotto made the cut alongside the seafood risotto, the crispy rice and mushrooms, and the tenderloin cooked medium with a side of yummy root vegetables. If we had to pick one, it was the pumpkin risotto that drew the most “mmmhs” and filling up spoons as fast as we could – the risotto was cooked beautifully and the flavour was subtle yet present, a perfect dish. A whole room is dedicated to the most indulgent, authentic Italian desserts. We’re talking cannoli, tarts, pies, cakes and everything in between. The presentation of each is utter insta beauty, reminiscent of any grandmother’s home following an afternoon of baking. To top that off, an entire corner is devoted to free flowing premium grapes and decadent Italian cheese, definitely one for the savoury dessert fans. There isn’t a single thing that the Villa Toscana team hasn’t thought of to make this Saturday feast stand out. Even the Restaurant Manager Giuseppe will be at hand to serve up, chat and share more information about the food – a lovely personable touch. The menu will change several times a year to enable Chef Rosario Martorana to utilise produce at its seasonal best ensuring the dishes develop and preserve the utmost aroma and traditions for peak brunch envy. ✤

SAVING FACE Emirates Palace Spa has always been a favourite and now they’ve stepped it up even more with a new facial that will take years off your skin as Angela Beitz discovers…

f you’re in need of some serious pampering in luxury surroundings, then Emirates Palace Spa is your answer. The spa is large but has a lovely, relaxed feel with low lighting and Moroccan décor. The small touches such as white and red rose petals in bubbling fountains and warm service make this spa enchanting. We love the entrance pathway leading to the spa with symmetrical lines of Moroccan lamps on either side. We fill in our consultation form while refreshing ourselves with a cold towel and a tasty cranberry concoction. After being ushered upstairs to the treatment room, we again marvel at the décor. The whole spa has a beautiful Arabic vibe with gorgeous mosaic tiling in bright colours. Our treatment room is what you would expect of Emirates Palace; follows the Arabic theme with dark timber and gold touches. We’re booked in for a 60-minute Active Haute Couture facial from the brand Linda Meredith which is new to the spa this year and is proving very popular. The Haute Couture facial has been designed to create a unique treatment for each client by addressing their individual requirements. Trends are showing that many clients prefer a combination of treatments and it’s excellent here in the UAE due to many skin concerns from the water and dryness of constant air-conditioning. Offering this facial allows you the benefits of a deep cleanse, extraction and gentle re-surfacing, followed by one or two additions, achieving the best results in a shorter time frame. We are shown to the beautiful and tranquil treatment room by our therapist and we change into a fluffy robe and shuffle over to a large chair in our soft slippers to have our foot ritual done. The feet are submerged in a warm bowl of water with white, pink and yellow rose petals and are

cleaned with a salt scrub and milk. While we are doing this we chat to our therapist about the facial and our areas of concern. She suggests a deep cleaning facial with a boost of anti-ageing. We lay on the treatment bed which is beyond comfortable with double duvets and lots of cushioning. Tiffany analyses the skin by feeling it, by holding her hands around the face, by touching and pushing the skin, by rubbing it and gently pinching it, to identify the key problems. Dehydration, a bit of congestion and some fine lines are the main concerns here. The skin is cleansed on the surface followed by a second deeper cleanse. Then a thorough consultation is carried out by Tiffany to assess any skin problems – she picks up on some small fine lines and some pigmentation that calls out for a deep cleanse. A gritty enzyme scrub is then applied to the face to kill dead skin cells and a boosting serum is applied to plump the skin, and then the skin is steamed to open the pores. This is followed by a natural micro-peel serum which removes dead cells and cleans deep beneath the surface. The serums can be applied in different strengths and areas of the face depending on the client’s skin. Its anti-bacterial effect helps with the reduction of everyday breakouts and softens fine lines and wrinkles. This is followed by a massage and mask with personalised products chosen by the therapist to produce the best possible results. Next a beautiful hydrating mask is applied to the complexion while the shoulder and arms are massaged. Pure bliss. Our complexion is left feeling fresh, clean, glowing and totally plump. There is no redness and we walk out of the treatment with glowing skin and are seriously impressed by the facial. Treat yourself and book in for a wonderful experience today. ✤

e love nothing more here at FACT than a little bit of pampering and so we were excited to try the new in-chair pampering treatments at The Nail Spa. These treatments are designed to add on to your nail services to allow you to relax and make

the most of the time. The Nail Spa is well known throughout the UAE with over 13 locations across the country. We are trying two of the new in-chair treatments also known as “Therapeutic Treatments”. The first is the Light & Clay Therapy which is 35 minutes and is for your hands and feet and aims to brighten and boost your skin. We are shown to a comfortable chair and the therapists start work on our hands and feet with the treatment. First the hands and feet are washed and any nail polish is removed. The areas are then exfoliated and then smothered in white clay – the clay is an Ancient Multani clay used to brighten the skin. Then they wrap some cling film around our hands and feet allowing the clay to soak right in and do its job. Once this is done the clay is removed using warm towels to reveal super soft skin, but the treatment doesn't stop there. LED light therapy is then used on our hands, feet, wrists and ankles for skin rejuvenation and to heal and nourish the skin. Then the hands and feet are massaged with Hyaluronic Plus and Intensive Moisture Serum: Serum d'Hydration. Our skin has never looked better and soon it’s time for a manicure and pedicure (which isn’t included in the treatment) to finish off. This treatment is perfect for when you have a special occasion or just need a little boost. Then we try the Rose Gold Face Massage which is 35 minutes and is the perfect in chair facial to boost your complexion. Our skin is cleansed, exfoliated and massaged using a unique yoga face massage technique which also used cold stones to de-puff the skin. A Knesko Skin Nanogold Repair Mask with Hyaluronic Acid is then applied to our face which feels wonderful and then our shoulders and décolleté are massaged while the mask does its thing. Once this is done Farsali Rose Gold Elixir with 24K gold and Rose oil is massaged into our face along with Altearah Gold perfume and oil. This is a deeply relaxing treatment that firms, lifts and plumps the skin and we walk out floating on air. ✤

HI, The Spa has a plethora of fantastic treatments to cure all sorts of stress and ailments but this time we are here to try one of the new hammams therapies. The spa has recently undergone a menu change and while still keeping their popular treatments they have added in some fabulous new ones that we can highly recommend trying. Rather than your average hammam, this treatment combines local inspired products to give you the feel of the Emirates that is rooted in Arabian tradition. The products used are from Hammamii, an authentic spa range freshly made in the UAE using only the finest in local all-natural ingredients. There’s camel’s milk from the Dubai desert, hydrated lemons from Fujairah, dates from Ras Al Khaimah, solar salts drawn from the Arabian Sea and traditional spices like sumac and za’atar that provide you with an exquisite and memorable Arabian cleansing ritual. The spa draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, a place of personal peace, enchantment and wellbeing. All massages and treatments are based on authentic natural healing methods found in traditional well-being practices shared by many Asian cultures. CHI’s ancient healing philosophies and rituals are designed to relax and rejuvenate both your body and mind. The space is super calm and serene and we sip a ginger tea while filling out our information and what we want to get out of the treatment. We are shown to the changing rooms, decked out in dark timber and modern Asian décor and slip into a comfy robe. We then go into the large hammam room which is steamy and warm. Our therapist also explains that the hammam is also good for improving blood circulation and that the combination of the heat and products will make us sweat to help us get rid of toxins and excess water. We sit down on the large hammam stone and firstly we are dunked in warm water from head to toe. Our skin is cleansed with a special hammam soap using traditional neela minerals and then our body is covered in a Moroccan mud that feels super moisturising. We then lay down on the hammam stone and our skin is firstly exfoliated with solar sea salts from Abu Dhabi and then scrubbed again with a zaatar mixture that smells amazing. The final scrub down happens with a hammam mit to reveal extremely smooth skin. The hair is then washed and a mask is put on. From there we are washed down again, first with a cleanser, then the camels milk and then a divine oil is applied all over the body which is made from saffron – brilliant for boosting circulation. This is truly a traditional and local luxury experience and our skin has never felt better, we continue to see the results for the next days. Highly recommended. ✤
