Artistic Endeavours

The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul." - Dieter F. Uchtdorf

R

emember, remember the 5th of November… how many of you celebrate the infamous “Bonfire Night” or “Guy Fawkes Night” as tradition from the place you call home? Though it’s not a big part of the culture here, November brings with it more creative and cultural institutions that the Abu Dhabi community thrives on every year. First on the list is Abu Dhabi Art on p26, taking place at Manarat Al Saadiyat from November 21 to 23, packed with over 40 incredible leading and emerging galleries highlighting the artistic identity of the UAE, the wider region and international works too. Exhibitions, performances, talks and so much more will draw art fans from across the world to our shores. At FACT, we're all about supporting local talent and community initiatives, and this month we go to catch up with one of the Arab world's most revered artists - eL Seed - who has teamed up with UAE-based social enterprise 81 Designs to present their latest project ‘The Journey’ at abu dhabi art. depicting an indepth perspective of coexistence, humanity and peace, we learn more about how their work is a force of hope, strength and social change (p28). If you picked up this issue of FACT for the very nostaligic cover, it’s the Arts Spotlight on p34 that you need to read. Just one more talented young lady harnessing her love of digital art through vibrant portraits that channel the pop art movement to its core. You can even contact Sara on Instagram – the main platform used for sharing her artwork – and request a drawing in a style that suits your character, for as little as AED50 – a side hustle that truly pays off for the artist and the audience. We also celebrated the second annual FACT Spa & Wellness Awards 2019 at the beautiful Saadiyat Beach Club where 150 guests gathered for a social evening of food and drinks. Turn to p86 and check out the list of all the winners and pictures from the lovely ceremony. Huge congrats to all the nominees and winners! Food, fashion, tech, motoring and the most prominent dining and society news is all jam-packed into an issue that is bursting with creative pride. As we head into the festive season and I press play on Jingle Bell Rock, it’s hard to believe that 2020 is just around the corner. In true UAE spirit, let’s make the most of the month ahead and keep living our best lives. See you in 30.☺

ABU DHABI ART 2019

The annual art fair’s 11th edition returns to Manarat Al Saadiyat from November 21 to 23. Presenting Modern and Contemporary art from more than 40 leading and emerging galleries, Abu Dhabi Art fair will also feature a curatorially driven programme of exhibitions, commissions, performances and talks throughout the week.

T

he 2019 edition will include Dubaibased artists Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian, who will be leading the Beyond: Emerging Artists programme; Paolo Colombo, the internationally renowned curator of Gateway programme; Dr Omar Kholeif, who will return to Abu Dhabi Art to curate the Focus sector for the third year; Jerome Sans who will curate a new section called New Horizons China, as well as gallerist Ashwin Thadani who will introduce new galleries from India to Abu Dhabi for the first time, in New Horizons: India. “Abu Dhabi Art continues to grow each year, as we strive to make each edition more innovative and dynamic than the last,” said HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Undersecretary, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). “The fair has expanded from an annual art fair to become a permanent platform, offering a yearround programme which includes solo gallery shows and public art commissions. This is testament to the growth of the thriving creative community in the UAE, and to the vibrant global forum that the fair has now become. I hope that everyone enjoys the engaging programme of exhibitions and events, along with all the artistic and cultural experiences Abu Dhabi Art has to offer.” Abu Dhabi Art’s agenda goes beyond the annual four-day fair, with 2019 welcoming a number of exhibitions and commissions that will continue beyond the show. Featured programmes, including Gateway and Beyond in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, will remain open until 25 January 2020. The annual programme Beyond will see large-scale sculptures and installations displayed across the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The commissioned 2019 artists for Beyond: 26

Artist Commissions programme are Leandro Erlich and Oliver Beer, whose work will be unveiled during the art fair and exhibited for two months afterwards. The three selected artists for the Beyond: Emerging Artists programme this year are Ayesha Hadhir, Rawdha Khalifa Al Ketbi and Shaikha Fahad Al Ketbi. The artists are currently undertaking a year-long programme with the curators which will culminate in the realisation of a new art work or project which will be unveiled during the fair. The works will then remain on display until 25 January 2020. Gateway, Abu Dhabi Art’s annual visual art exhibition, invites a unique curatorial perspective from a guest curator each year, with the 2019 edition curated by internationally renowned curator Colombo. This year’s exhibition will explore the relevance that everyday objects from archaeological finds may have on stories that artists narrate in their practice today. In a first for Abu Dhabi Art, Al Ain Museum has generously loaned a number of objects that function as keystones for this exhibition. Al Ain Museum holdings constitute a history of the region made visible, and have been curated alongside contemporary works included in the show. “Thanks to the wonderful opportunity to include artefacts from the Al Ain Museum, I was able to look at work by contemporary artists in relation to their holdings,” said Colombo. “The generosity of the museum made it possible to approach the history of the region in a most privileged way. In close contact with the artefacts, one can see the usage and formal connections that are still valid across time, and that I hope the visitor to the exhibition will recognise with ease and appreciate.”

Abu Dhabi Art includes the Focus sector, which will see the return on of Dr. Omar Kholeif, who will curate the show for the third year running. Dr Kholeif stated: “The UAE has played a pivotal role in the broader region of the Middle East and South Asia. It has become a meeting point, a central node that links and binds citizens of these cultures in unison through the lens of the visual arts. Abu Dhabi Art 2019 will also feature New Horizons, curated gallery sectors, which explores Asian Contemporary art curated by Jerome Sans and also includes a focus on galleries from India invited by gallerist Ashwin Thadani. ✤

figurines, each named after the refugee women and children who participated in The Journey. Each individual figurine is hand-stitched in a modernised form of Tatreez and represents an interpretation of their dreams. Abu Dhabi Art visitors can immerse into the lives of these women and children at 81 Designs’ booth that will feature 3D elements reflecting life inside the camp. Through this short-lived experience, the social enterprise aims to provide more insight and a deeper understanding on the living situation of camp residents. FACT caught up with eL Seed himself to learn more about the project and how art is all about human experience…

T

he Journey, a symbolic tribute to the Year of Tolerance, is a result of an immersive trip to Ain El-Hilweh refugee camp in Southern Lebanon, where eL Seed created seven murals leaving his distinct style to spread messages of peace and unity. Each mural that is exclusively designed for this project will be translated into an artwork created in the medium of Tatreez on canvas, a traditional Palestinian embroidery that has become a symbol of women's resistance, identity and heritage. The pieces will be presented at Abu Dhabi Art alongside a limited edition of

Hi eL Seed! Let’s jump right in… did you ever imagine that your art work would lead you to be a part of such unique communities as Ain El-Hilweh refugee camp? When I started my work at the beginning, it was really about the art and the challenge that I was giving myself. But the more I got involved into my practice, the more I painted on the street, I realised that it was not about the artistic challenge which is a big part of my artwork, but was more about the human experience. I'm grateful that I've been able to travel the world and to go to places that people don't usually go and Ain El-Hilweh is one of them. The experience was amazing and overwhelming in a positive way. I was not expecting to be greeted the way we

were. I was not expecting to get such a rich connection with the women and the project went really well. Everybody was so happy. What are some of the reasons that you were drawn towards this project with 81 Designs? Usually I’d refuse to this kind of project but the circumstances in 2016 made me speak directly with Nadine, co-founder of 81 Designs, who explained to me what the project is about. After spending 30 minutes on the phone, she convinced me and so we did our first collaboration in 2017 where I sent my designs for the ladies in the refugee camp to reproduce, and I felt I wanted to have a more indepth story. I think the idea of trying to modernise the tradition of Palestinian Tatreez was, first of all, something that I appreciated. I love the fact that someone is trying to carry a tradition. And I also like the social part of it, being able to help for a certain cause. Not out of pity, but making good and being part of something that would allow these women to generate some income. That's why I think the project is great, that's why I accepted. How does it feel to leave such an impactful artistic imprint in some of the most remote and diverse areas of the world - including the camp in South Lebanon? Art is made for everybody. When you're fact magazine

painting on the streets, in a certain way, you democratise it. So, bringing art to places where people don't expect it, for me, is a tool of societal change; like how I painted the Garbage City of Cairo or one of the slums in Cape Town. But this camp in South Lebanon is a different experience for me because nobody was allowed to get there, even the army don't go there, the police don’t go there; and we were there painting. It was amazing to see how art speaks to everyone. You should have seen the excitement of not only the women but all the people in the neighborhood from the first day when people saw what we were doing. Everybody was asking, “Oh, please paint my house” and “What are you going to paint next, are you going to paint my house?” It just shows the humanity of everybody. Is there a particular message that you were conveying through the murals created for this project - tell us a little more about them… I actually proposed to the women that we’d use some poetry from Mahmoud Darwish. The central theme of his work is “al watan” or homeland. For me, it was a way for them to reconnect in a certain way with their Palestinian heritage. He wrote messages of hope like all the poetry that we use. That's what I try to convey with this project as, you know, their situation is not easy. I want to carry this message of hope and show one side of the culture because I think a lot of people forget about the deep Palestinian culture and I think that working with Tatreez and these women was a way for me to highlight this. What was it like working so closely with the women at the camp and have you seen the murals translated into Tatreez yet? How does it make you feel to see your art adapted into unique, symbolic mediums? Yes, I've seen it. I'm in touch with Um Mahmoud (the head artisan at 81 Designs) by WhatsApp and she sent me some pictures and it's amazing. I'm satisfied and happy about this collaboration, also because my wife is Palestinian, so in a certain way, it is for her. She wrote a thesis on Palestinian Tatreez a few years ago, so I would say I had already acquired certain knowledge about the subject because she taught me a lot about it. So, for me, it 30

was an important project on a human level, on a personal level, and on a social level as well. Seeing how they would interpret this mural into Tatreez, for me, is an achievement and I am really happy about it. As an artist, how important is it for you to give back and share your talent - but also to inspire the younger generation? I think it is all about inspiration. If you've been inspired by something or somebody, then you try to inspire somebody as well. That’s the way I see it and that’s how my journey goes. I meet people who help me, to make a step ahead, and I also try to direct or help in any way that I can. During my camp visit, we also had some support from some of the youth and so I feel like we were helping kids as well when we're doing the project. Do you believe that art has the power to create change - or at least promote hope? In what ways have you contributed to this? I try to contribute to it. The reason why we called it ‘The Journey’ is because one of the women said that they felt it was a journey. When we were working on this, they felt like they left the camp, that they have travelled out of the camp because it was a different ambiance. And that’s how you give hope, when you give a purpose. I think for them, knowing that all the pieces will be sold will be a great purpose because they will be able to figure out how to feed their families for many months or years, I don't know how many times. But that's definitely a way to bring hope to people. And in a way you create a certain change because you give hope to people. You have achieved some truly great feats in the art world and within the global community, what is your most memorable accomplishment or recognition to date? Oh, wow! Accomplishment? I don't know but I do enjoy each project that has its own story. It's not about being recognised or anything, but it's about being able to leave something, to leave a mark in this world. In every place I've been, I've left my trace in a certain way. It's about the memories that I share with people but also the trace that people have left in my life. And I think that made me what I am today. So, I don't think I'm prouder of anything. There are some projects such as Egypt which is a big project that I am part of, but each one has its own story, one taste. It's a beautiful thing. Why do you think it’s important for events like Abu Dhabi Art to showcase such projects as The Journey - what message or viewpoints do you hope that people will walk away with after hearing this story and seeing the art work? I think what 81 Designs is doing, through Abu Dhabi Art, is giving a platform and voice to those women and showing the world that even in 2019, there are people still living in an unfortunate situation. I find it difficult to accept that there are more than one hundred thousand people living in a two square kilometer space. I think what Nadine and her mom Nesrine are doing, bringing such a great project to such an amazing platform, is a way to give voice and that's what I find amazing. And I hope people will not feel pity but I hope that the people who come fact magazine

here will feel the strength, the courage, and the pride that these women have. And I hope that's what we're going to inspire through this project, with everybody that was involved in it. Any words of advice for young, budding artists? As an artist, I’d say just believe in your dreams. Being an artist is not an easy thing, this is the craziest thing to me but I think we need artists in this world. If you want to be an artist, just believe in it. Don't be scared. Don't listen to people who don’t seem to believe. Listen to your heart and that’s the most important part. Heading into the end of 2019, what’s coming up for you soon any big projects? During Abu Dhabi Art, in addition to the presentation of my latest project with 81 Designs, I will also have a solo show with Ayyam Gallery. I'm having a show in Miami as well. As for the outdoor project, I'd like to surprise people. It's the most enjoyable feeling when they finally see what I’m up to. There are a few things going on in 2020 and I cannot wait to surprise everyone. ✤

MAKE IT POP The digital art movement has seen quite the evolution in the past decade and with the rise of social media, more talented individuals have a platform to share their work with the world. Bahrain-based Sara Rajab, who goes by the handle @popcorn.nose.art on Instagram, is one such artist utilising modern-day technology to hone and share her skills. Here, she talks to FACT’s Shabana Adam about her artistic style and growing a grassroots following…

I

n second grade, Sara Rajab drew a policeman for a homework project and her mother’s proud reaction sparked an artistic journey that has turned from a cool hobby into a bona fide side hustle. Creating digital art under the pseudonym @popcorn.nose.art (Sara’s best friend has always compared her nose to a perfect popcorn shape, hence the Instagram handle), the 24-year-old stumbled upon turning her drawings into life-like animations after she graduated. “I started to draw in my free time,” Sara recalls. “Then one of my friends told me to try digital art. After that day, I was amazed to learn how I could turn a simple sketch into a fascinating form of digital art just with one touch, anywhere and anytime I felt like it.” Digital Art encompasses a wide-range of work. In Sara’s case, her images are digitally-created reproductions of artworks that already exist in another form – she sketches in a book and translates these drawings onto the Stylus app. Sometimes, she draws directly onto the app, in pursuit of trying new things. You only need to take one look at Sara’s Instagram page to see the impact her artwork has made. Portraits of real people and pop culture characters appear in vibrant digital form, praised through hundreds of likes and comments. Everything from the lines to the vivid colours is in keeping with the Pop Art movement which utilises the imagery and techniques of consumerism and popular culture. Pop art was originally developed in the late 1950s as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and flourished in the sixties and early seventies. Pop Art favoured figural imagery and 34

the reproduction of everyday objects, such as Campbell Soup cans, comic strips and advertisements. The movement eliminated distinctions between "good" and "bad" taste and between fine art and commercial art techniques. Sara takes requests from friends and followers as well as drawing some of her favourite celebrity icons such as Frank Ocean, Donald Glover, Jaden Smith and, more recent drawings depicting the late Hollywood actor Luke Perry as well as her take on the blockbuster hit, Joker. Sara is gripped by the artistic process. She loves to learn new techniques and change up her style when the drawing permits. “I make different art for everyone,” she explains. “Some people request cartoony, and some want super-hero style, it depends on each individual.” For the moment, Sara’s tools are simple; she uses her iPhone 7 and various apps including Stylus and, more recently, Procreate Pocket to create digital art. She hopes to upgrade this to an iPad and iPen soon. Unlike a traditional canvas and watercolour paintings, digital pieces carry their own flair and finesse. However, the practice of producing the art remains the same. For Sara, pondering on a finished artwork is part of her routine. “I know I’m almost done with my piece when I add the small details that make my art come to life, like dots or stars, or freckles” she tells us. “Sometimes, after I finish a piece, I leave it to sit for an hour or more, just to look back at it and make sure it is exactly how I want it to be.” There is no rush when it comes to digital art. Much like its conventional counterparts, Sara’s work is, simply, an outcome of modern-day creativity and passion. “The vision of the final piece keeps me consistent till the end,” Sara says. “What inspires my work is the people I share my art with. They give me really good feedback and it makes me want to do more.” Helping to dispel the idea that digital art is something of a casual pastime, and not to be taken seriously, Sara’s work is the perfect example of moving with the times.

• ARTS SPOTLIGHT “I have studied a little bit about what each colour can make you feel,” Sara shares. “So, I like to post art with these specific colors to grab people’s attention. Other times, I just pick a colour according to how I feel or what I think will look better with the main art piece.” Sara is forever grateful to the online world and the wider community in Bahrain for the love and support she has received so far – a testament to the country and its people for their encouragement and acceptance of all creative practices. “Most artists that I know in Bahrain are really supportive with my art and I can ask them anything in terms of getting advice,” she smiles. “The only challenge really is me challenging myself to improve.” With almost 4k followers on Instagram, Sara’s talent is proof that artistic boundaries are nonexistent in today’s social media landscape. Being able to share her art with such a wide audience online has been a blessing in disguise for Sara. “Social media has really helped me grow as an artist,” she says. “All the comments have been positive and I also get random messages from people telling me they like my work. Also, a lot of people share my art on their stories which has really helped me to grow my followers and also helped me to make some money from my skills,” she adds.

Two of the artists that Sara looks to for inspiration can be found on Instagram: @Bluesssatan and @By_nick – both with different styles. In fact, Sara’s advice for standing out in a market that is so saturated with talent is to find your own style. “Keep practicing and think about what your art would be according to your personality or if it was the other way around would you consider buying art from yourself,” Sara advices. “Also, don’t be afraid to try new things. Your art doesn’t have to look like other people’s art, draw what you want, and that’s what will make you a unique artist.” Sara’s artworks are also very family friendly, so people of all ages can visit her account on Instagram and request what they would like. Her future plans include designing stickers and t-shirts with her artwork, showing a penchant for entrepreneurial chase with what could well and truly be a fully-fledged merch line. And that is something we can definitely get behind! ✤ 38

YEARS OF LUXURY LOUVRE ABU DHABI WILL PRESENT A GROUND-BREAKING EXHIBITION THAT EXPLORES THE HISTORY OF LUXURY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

O

rganised by Louvre Abu Dhabi, Musée des Arts Décoratifs and Agence France-Muséums, the exhibition: 10,000 Years of Luxury, features approximately 350 objects including fashion, jewellery, visual art, furniture and design, and explores how luxury has been defined by diverse cultures from antiquity to the present day. Curated by Olivier Gabet, Director of Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the exhibition draws primarily from the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and other French, international and local institutions. It also displays works from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s collection and offers a rare chance to revel in and evaluate the audience’s ever-changing fascination with luxury. 10,000 Years of Luxury exemplifies Louvre Abu Dhabi’s 2019/2020 season, Changing Societies, which focuses on how culture and creativity reflect major shifts in civilisations. The exhibition considers luxury as a vehicle for understanding the social, economic and political circumstances of a specific time period, as well as how notions of value have evolved throughout history. The exhibition will present concepts of luxury from ancient civilisations and their worship of the gods, to the exquisite finery of the 18th century, to the Industrial Revolution and its impact on the mass consumption of luxury goods. Each piece offers a different viewpoint on what defines luxury – be it time, craftsmanship or rarity. Works range from a Mamluk carpet from Egypt dating back to the 15th century to an hourglass by Australian designer Marc Newson. The luxury of fashion is highlighted with both vintage and contemporary creations by iconic fashion designers: Balenciaga, CHANEL, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Karl Lagerfeld, Azzedine Alaïa, Maison Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermès and more. Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “In this exhibition, we are exploring humanity’s connection to luxury across time and cultures, taking a long lens on the subject from ancient treasures to present day haute couture. This approach is consistent with Louvre Abu Dhabi’s universal narrative, which is part of our DNA. “We are grateful to our main partner Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the many institutions, including haute couture icons, who have contributed exceptional pieces to this wonderful story of luxury,” he added. 10,000 Years of Luxury will unfold across 12 rooms, beginning in antiquity and ending in the present day. of the Middle East and the Mediterranean chart early forms of luxury, which derived value from the cost and rarity of materials and signified specific social beliefs and customs. In the Middle Ages, luxury spread around the globe due to expanding trade routes and the development of new techniques. The 17th and 18th centuries saw Paris take centre stage in the luxury market with the rise of decorative art dealers, known as marchandmercier. Visitors will experience a recreation of an 18th century Parisian boutique, displaying the ingenious work of the marchandmercier and the first forms of commercialised luxury. The paradox of luxury became particularly evident from the end of the 19th century with lavish objects from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, while in the 20th century luxury returns to a closer relationship with natural and simple materials and resources. The exhibition closes with the question: what is luxury in 2019? Moving away from the material and into the philosophical, the final section proposes that contemporary luxury is defined by time, space and freedom. Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “This one-of a-kind exhibition examines the multi-faceted aspects of luxury that have fascinated humans throughout time, with a focus on the materials and techniques that define precious objects. We aim to challenge preconceived notions of luxury and offer new perspectives on this everchanging concept.”

he Marriott Hotel Al Forsan brought a whole new luxury hotel scene to Abu Dhabi when it opened just over two years ago. A sleek glass building rising from between the well kempt polo fields of the equestrian centre at Al Forsan International Sports Resort, it's an impressive structure home to 400 rooms and a number of distinct food and beverage outlets that really inject life and character into the otherwise sleepy residential community of Khalifa City. Floral bouquets and ample soft furnishing greet guests in a lobby bathed in natural light. Beneath a shaded canopy is a splash park for younger guests, an aqua playground full of fountains and water jets that is bound to keep the little ones occupied for hours, as is the kids’ playground with climbing structures and a poolside sandpit. The Marriott Hotel Al Forsan may not be located near the beach but there is little doubt that this is a resort, offering a number of leisure activities including a state-of-the-art fitness centre and a luxurious spa.

FOOD COMES FIRST

Six new dining destinations accompany the arrival of this new hotel, each unique and looking to bring something distinct to the city. We're impressed by Khayal, the hotels all-day dining restaurant which adds a personal touch via tours of the buffet and a multitude of seating options. We suggest you try and bag one of the raised tables that appear to be 'floating' amongst the water features. The buffet spread is large and offers everything from dim sum and sushi, to Arabic favourites and Indian specialties. The versatility of the restaurant is remarkable, as the buffet adapts for the various meals while rarely repeating dishes. Breakfast was our favourite for its abundance of fresh fruits, thick 'slabs' of French toast and some unique inclusions such as noodle soup and baked flapjacks. Sitting in the centre of the hotel is the Lobby Lounge, a great spot to gratify that caffeine fix or indulge in afternoon tea. Couture Lounge is the place for happy hour sundowners while Appaloosa is a hybrid of casual sports bar and shisha lounge, serving up some interesting dishes. HOSPITALITY BUZZ

The Marriott Hotel Al Forsan’s location is in fact desirable. Out of the city – but close enough to tons of major attractions – the property is the true epitome of “getaway” due to a culmination of factors including the high level of service, the quality of product and the leisure activities available. Whether it's shooting, archery, wake-boarding or something more relaxing (like the spa or swimming pool), Marriott Hotel Al Forsan has filled a gap in the market by striking a balance between relaxation and active experiences. This is the kind of place we think about when recommending a weekend staycation spot for families, friends, couples and even solo visitors. ✤

grub, we suggest the seared tuna burger with its fiery wasabi mayonnaise and black squid ink bun (an Instagrammer’s dream). The venue’s BYOF Friday Brunch is a great choice for classic, comfort food and all-round good vibes. The Grill is the Marriott Hotel Al Forsan's crowning glory, a steakhouse that looks to differentiate from the numerous other steakhouses in Abu Dhabi. Forgoing the usual masculine connotations of dark wood and leather furnishings, The Grill is a sleeker affair with a modern and light design drawing attention to the central show kitchen. Service throughout the restaurant is engaging with a number of incredibly-tasting dishes including the Burratina and Baby Rucolla, delicious Pan Seared Scallops and mouthwatering Creole Lump Crab Cakes. The Grill selection is extensive and thoughtful. We opt for the USDA Ladies Cut Tenderloin which is an absolute delight at 170g of medium-well USDA "Fox River" Prime Grain Fed Beef. AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh A-LIST BEAUTY R&R: CELESTIAL BLACK DIAMOND NON-SURGICAL FACIAL LIFT The bags under my eyes are corporate. With a nine-five job and a life to run afterwards between masking and multitasking, my skin requires an instant fix which led me to book a lazy Saturday afternoon treat at the SPA, Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. Here, they carry an impressive range of premier skincare brands including 111SKIN; a highly coveted UK brand developed by renowned Harley Street cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yannis Alexandrides MD. And for the first time in the Middle East, the brand is the hero of the results-driven ‘SPA/ CLINIC by 111SKIN’ concept which is known for innovative formulas and engineered using the most sophisticated methods. With all this in mind, I was so eager to try one of their treatments which happens to be a celebrity favourite - the Celestial Black Diamond Non-Surgical Facial Lift – the likes of Kim Kardashian, Bella Hadid and Priyanka Chopra are amongst some of the high-profile Hollywood A-listers who turn to this nothing-short-of-magic remedy before hitting the red carpet. Now, I didn’t have a red carpet to get to, but my skin was in dire need of the benefits that this facial promises as it uses science-led formulas with diamond powder involving a ten-step treatment that utilises surgically-inspired masks and aesthetician-grade acids. The result? Skin appears smoother, lifted and brighter. Was I excited to try this? Yes! Would I recommend this facial to others? Y.E.S! It was 90 minutes of double cleansing, applying serum using a massage technique to aid in penetrating the serum to the deeper layers of the skin, and finished off with multi-masking of four hydrogel masks on from the Celestial Black Diamond firming and lifting collection to cover the whole face (including eyes and lips), neck and décolletage. After removing the masks and finishing things off with moisturising the face and eyes from the Celestial Black Diamond range, I go to the mirror and as cliché as this would sound and I am in awe! Yes, results are as instant as they allege, and my face is luminous and lifted especially my under-eye area which was lacking some luster from my insomnia. This facial is worth the celebrity hype and would be a great option for instant results if you are a bride, attending a major event or in my case, simply wanting to give your skin that extra TLC.

Yours fashionably, Amal 64

GET US TO THE GREEK! Mazi at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has cleverly leveraged the trend for all things Greek that has proven unequivocally popular in the UAE, in recent months. NEW IN TOWN •

S

aadiyat Island is the perfect fit for Mazi, which comes to us from husband and wife team Adrien Carré and Christina Mouratoglou who opened the original Mazi in West London in the summer of 2012. The concept takes in the full breadth of Greece and reinvents traditional dishes and flavours by incorporating a distinct contemporary streak to the food, which successfully elevates the dining experience into something altogether special. The restaurant space has undergone a complete transformation. Shedding the dark steakhouse origins in favour of a brighter space, embracing the turquoise and white colour palette of Santorini that’s perfectly in keeping with the beachfront location. Subtle touches such as a wall of ornate wooden doors, hung golden oars and a beached wooden boat brimming with sand all help to enhance the idea of coastal chic. The new levelled terrace, complete with potted olive trees, helps to complete the picture of Mediterranean vibes. A sleek bar serving up Ouzo-based mixology makes Mazi worth a visit just for this. Something that can’t be said about many restaurant bars in Abu Dhabi. The name Mazi, translated from Greek as “together”, summarises the sharing concept promoted via the restaurant’s concise menu. Dishes may be limited but the result is very much a case of quality over quantity and regular diners can expect the menu to be revamped every few months with new seasonal dishes being added frequently throughout the year. Those in search of traditional Greek dishes may not find exactly what they’re looking for as the menu at Mazi is Greek-inspired, taking many of the classics and investing them with a contemporary twist that focuses on flavour and impressive fact magazine

• NEW IN TOWN presentation. Our meal begins with a selection of jars which include an exciting take on taramasalata (AED35), adorning the popular fish roe mousse with lemon pearls. The grilled aubergine (AED 5) is a delight and similar to a Middle Eastern baba ghanoush. Presenting a mixture of charred aubergine, soy and thyme honey that is sweet and highly addictive. The spicy tiropita (AED35) takes the classic Greek cheese pie and transforms it into a cheese dip into which shards of crisp filo pastry are broken. The result is a textural marvel and one of Mazi’s ‘must-order’ dishes. The signature feta tempura (AED50) uses an interesting interplay between sweet and sour to enliven the palate thanks to a dollop of sweet lemon marmalade and a beautiful caper meringue which sit proudly upon the crisp golden cheese. It’s easy to see how this has become Mazi’s best-selling dish and we confess that this is perhaps one of the best dishes we have eaten in a restaurant this year. From the hot starters, plump round courgette cakes (AED 0) are served alongside a beautifully refreshing cucumber and mint dip, while the sea bream tartare (AED65) will please lovers of all things raw, presenting an interesting flavour profile thanks to a light avocado mousse and crispy squid ink rice puff. The prices rise considerably with the main courses and although the grilled octopus (AED175) is perhaps a little expensive considering the portion size, the dish is spectacular. The spiralled tentacle has been lightly charred, bringing a subtle flavour to the tender mollusc that is beautifully complemented by a garden herb potato salad and olive tapenade. The purpose of a signature dish is essentially to embody the essence of the restaurant in the best way possible and this is certainly the case with the shredded lamb shoulder stifado (AED120) with miso aubergine. The dish represents a dish of culinary bravado full of robust flavours and complementing textures that exemplify Mazi’s modern Greek stylings. Desserts provide all the expected favourites such as pistachio parfait, Galaktoboureko and Loukoumades. The latter, small Greek doughnuts (AED40) are served inside a quaint wooden box into which is placed a burning lavender stem that engulfs the dessert with a fragrant aroma. The loukoumades themselves are crisp on the outside and boast a soft interior that is lighter than expected. Slathered in lavender honey, crushed walnuts and served with dark chocolate sorbet, these are the perfect way to end the meal. Mazi makes for a pleasing place to dine, especially with the cooler winter months approaching. Service throughout our lunch at this fine-casual concept is fairly strong. The restaurant confidently fills a gap for Greek cuisine in the UAE capital that has been lacking from the marketplace and the current buzz surrounding the venue is one of resounding positivity. ✤

ASIAN SOUL FOOD Li Jiang at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal should require little introduction. The Asian restaurant with stunning views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was voted ‘Favourite South East Asian Restaurant’ at the 2019 FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi and continues to set the bar high when it comes to Asian food in the capital. DINING FOCUS •

L

ocated at the bottom of The Ritz Carlton’s grand staircase that sweeps down from the lobby level, Li Jiang takes diners on a culinary journey into the heart of Asia via a sensory experience that starts from the moment you enter the restaurant space. Anchored around a central show kitchen which is full of life, as chefs whizz between steaming baskets of dim sum and dashes of flame that lick at the bottom of woks. It’s an exciting environment in which to dine and one that is further accentuated by the deep red tones of the decor. Saturday evenings at Li Jiang have been transformed with the introduction of the new ‘street food late brunch.’ An interesting concept in which an extensive buffet is laid out to resemble a street food market. The concept immediately reminds us of Bangkok’s busy Khao San Road or the bustling night market of Luang Prabang in Laos. Several cuisines are represented, taking in the breadth of Asia and include Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian and Korean (to name a few). The beauty of this particular brunch is the timing which runs from 5pm to 11pm each Saturday evening. Guests are encouraged to enjoy brunch during a three-hour window at a time that suits them during this period and this provides a more relaxed approach to brunching that certainly suits the end of the weekend timing. We’re pleased to find a number of families dining during the earlier part of the evening. A trip around the open buffet begins with many fragrant mixed drinks (both the shiso sensation and lychee and mint cooler are not to be missed) before segueing into prawn crackers and succulent chicken balls. Skewered on wooden sticks just as they would be found in the marketplace. Following the horseshoe shape of the open kitchen, guests are invited to graze the food displays that include appealing salad options such as the Thai beef and seafood options. Next is the sushi station which features a selection of enticing maki rolls (both cooked and raw) that are accompanied by an array of condiments which include the expected soy sauce and wasabi amongst wakame and kimchi. The maki rolls we sample are excellent. Though we must admit the cool slithers of salmon and tuna sashimi get our vote. The street food brunch is as much a treat for the eyes as it is for the stomach and we would highly recommend perusing all that is offered before filling your plates, as there is a lot to choose from. Plentiful portions of Li Jiang's signature Peking duck are served upon a vibrant banana leaf and boast the crisp skin and rich tender meat that goes all too well with the accompanying hoisin or ginger sauces. For lovers of dim sum, there are so many steamed bamboo baskets chock-full of the delightful Chinese parcels. From a beautiful green coloured jade vegetable dumpling through to the steamed chicken bun that is undeniably addictive. Variety is provided for regular visitors to the Li Jiang evening brunch via four signature hot dishes which are changed weekly. On the evening we visit there’s a fiery Gong Bao chicken, black pepper beef and fried frogs legs - a dish that is notoriously difficult to find in Abu Dhabi. Venturing outside onto the terrace offers low slung seating

and a pleasant al fresco dining area looking out across verdant lawns. A small bar and several live stations can be discovered in this area and are home to hot and sour tom yum soup, lamb and chicken satay sticks with a moreish peanut sauce and the barbeque. The barbecue is probably the highlight of the evening thanks to a variety of meat and seafood options, most of which features Korean marination. Wagyu beef, lamb chops, short ribs and tiger prawns are flame-grilled to your liking and taste absolutely fantastic. Dine outside (weather permitting) and you’ll be rewarded with what is easily the best view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. We dare you not to be hypnotised as the pink hues of sunset give way to the purple illumination of the landmark as day turns into night. A small dessert buffet rounds out the evening’s festivities and replaces the brunch staple of a chocolate fountain with a matcha variation that can be used to cover marshmallows, rich brownie chunks and dragon fruit slices. You’ll also find tapioca balls generously stuffed with red bean paste, sticky rice and spicy chocolate pots that have an undeniable kick of chilli that helps to open the palate at the end of a meal that is already bursting with flavour. Curated by Chef Chung, Li Jiang’s street food late brunch does a marvellous job of encapsulating the flavours of South East fact magazine

• DINING FOCUS Asia and offers diners a broad range of dishes. The culinary team are more than happy to whip up bespoke dishes upon request and to suit dietary requirements which is really appreciated. With very few Saturday evening brunches in Abu Dhabi, Li Jiang offers a casual and relaxed means of winding down the weekend and in the process celebrates the culture and vibrancy of Asian street food. It’s extremely busy on the evening we visit with a mix of hotel guests and residents, so ensure you book ahead - this is one you do not want to miss. ✤

ITALIAN INDULGENCE

When Roberto’s Abu Dhabi opened at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, it changed the entire landscape of high-end dining. Where few venues have managed to capture the ultra-lavish package of setting, service and quality of food, Roberto’s showed real promise in ticking all of these boxes. Three years on, FACT’s Shabana Adam revisits the restaurant to put all of this to the test… 74

R

oberto’s Abu Dhabi is one of the city’s most exciting dining destinations that well and truly epitomises the concept of fine-dining and high standards. Presenting itself as a luxury hotspot, Roberto’s is the result of a contemporary concept meets polished interiors. With both indoor and outdoor seating – making Roberto’s ready for each season – even when the place is full, it feels comfortable and discreet. Located on the ground floor of The Galleria, the best way to reach Roberto’s is via the Rosewood hotel’s lobby and an elevator going down. On approach, you’ll never guess that the inside is a sprawling area with a lovely, large dining room dubbed Il Ristorante, a long marble Crudo Bar (where live seafood preparations can be seen), the climate-controlled outdoor terrace and a modern bar-cum-lounge called Salotto where the crowds gather for inventive mixology and sophisticated nights out. It’s basically for revelers who want to keep their food and the party in one place. Start off with a fruity mocktail (or whatever happens to be your liquid kryptonite) at Salotto. The mood-lit area creates an intimate setting, ideal for evening dates or more private gatherings. Take a seat at one of the elegant tables in Il Ristorante and get ready to be wowed by the menu. With 2 Michelin star Chef Enrico Bartolini as the dedicated Chief Culinary Advisor to Roberto’s, the menu here has remained a classic tribute to Italy with creative cooking methods and modern-day presentation. Il Ristorante’s signature white marble Crudo Bar can be found artfully displaying a hand selected array of seafood, to be prepared before your eyes. Being the complete food connoisseurs that we are, we got straight to it. During this tasting of signature menu items, we begin with some familiar dishes – which turned out to be far from simple. The Carpaccio Di Manzo is beef carpaccio with wild rocket and fact magazine

• ON THE MENU parmesan shavings. In a dish as modest as this, high quality (ideally grass-fed) beef tenderloin is a must for its fresh, pure, meaty flavour. At Roberto’s, it’s sliced paper thin and practically melts in your mouth. The Tartara Mista Di Pesce is an amalgamation of tuna, salmon and sea bass tartare with pomelo and grapefruit, and sesame carta musica crisps. Not only is the plating made for an insta-worthy shot, the taste is everything we could have hoped for. Our favourite seafood coated in citrus excellence makes for a refined choice indeed. The most pleasant surprise of the evening came from a dish that is present on countless menus across the city. However, it is simply outstanding at Roberto’s. We’re talking about the humble golden fried calamari with its incredible crispy texture. We’d happily eat this like popcorn at the cinema. SO good. The creativity continues into the Polpo, Cacio E Pepe, E Carciofi, which is slow-cooked, roasted octopus. Our waiter tells us that it’s a tribute to Abu Dhabi, mingling modern techniques with Ancient Roman ingredients: artichoke and cacio e pepe sauce, made of Pecorino cheese, milk and black pepper. Hands down, it’s the best octopus dish we’ve tried in the entire region. With a charred smokiness on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside – it’s a revelation. The Marinated Black Cod is unlike anything we’ve ever come across. Cooked in a banana leaf, the smoky smell it emanates hits our senses before we even see the fish. Unwrapped at the table, our knives cut through it like butter. Retaining a nice silky bite, the only thing you’ll be left saying is HELLO. THANK YOU. GOODBYE. The Ossobuco Tradizionale Con Risotto Allo Zafferano is the dish of the night. The saffron risotto is a nod to the local palate, whilst the slow-cooked veal is like a warm hug from a loved one – rich and flavour-packed, complementing the risotto flawlessly. When it comes to dessert, there’s plenty to please every stomach. Chocolate fondant with raspberry lemon thyme sorbet and yuzu jelly is a reliable and delicious option whilst Roberto’s Ciocco Colato is a plate of warm 72% dark chocolate foam with hazelnut ice-cream – magic for those with a genuine sweet tooth. The menu here is a match for its dining counterparts in terms of quality for your money’s worth. Service, attentiveness and the knowledge demonstrated by staff also adds to the wholesome experience. The experiment, intrigue, and passion for good food and drinks is what has helped to keep Roberto’s Abu Dhabi at the top of its game. ✤

RAISING THE STEAKS

In a city full of lavish Friday brunches, it takes something rather simple and special to get our attention. FACT’s Shabana Adam visits the much-talked about Raising the Steaks Brunch at Southern Sun Abu Dhabi… fact magazine

tep out of the elevators onto the floor where The Foundry is located and you’ll feel like you’ve found a real hidden gem. With astonishingly high ceilings, sophisticated water features, big sliding doors and a variety of comfortable seating options, the whole floor is dedicated to this incredible eatery. By day, The Foundry serves up breakfast and lunch, both buffet and a la carte style, and at night, it quite literally transforms into a chic and elegant steakhouse restaurant plating up some of the finest cuts of meat in Abu Dhabi. We love that there are several seating options from private dining to comfy sofa seats, and even high pod-style tables, perfect for a more intimate dinner experience. Every guest is catered for; from families to couples, groups of friends and even solo diners. Our favourite seating choice is a huge round table with throne-inspired, cushioned chairs, surrounded by free-flowing water – it’s possibly the cosiest brunch setting in the middle of the city. On Fridays, The Foundry plays host to the popular Raising the Steaks Brunch – a shindig that has been accredited as the epitome of bespoke brunch experiences in the UAE capital. Widely acknowledged for its personalised culinary craftsmanship and wizardry-level mixology, the brunch features a sumptuous array of tableside gastronomy, live artisan theatrics and quirky drink stations honed to perfection by a very talented team. They don’t do things by halves here. There is definitely an element of exclusivity at this steak brunch, which comprises of premium cuts of meat from a select list of chosen partners and suppliers from around the globe. Start your journey with some of the finest, freshly shucked oysters, delectable hors d'oeuvres, antipasti and the freshest seafood smorgasbord. The sensational make your own Burrata Bar sets the mood for a never-ending epicurean journey – it’s like nothing we’ve ever experienced before. Ingredients range from red and yellow cherry tomatoes to basil pesto, balsamic vinegar, and bocconcini mozzarella as well as smoked duck, figs, turkey chorizo, marinated artichoke, and

fresh basil to name but a few of the tasty concoctions you can tailormake. Queue for the Poke Raw Bar and indulge in the classic Hawaiian dish of fresh seafood enjoyed with a variety of mouthwatering toppings. We’d highly recommend the scallops or the octopus with rice or kale, topped with the most flavourful condiments such as cilantro, seaweed, pineapple and more. The wasabi mayo dressing has a memorable punch too! Gourmet Mexican takes center stage and is a good pit stop to enjoy your classic filledto-the-brim tacos, citrusy ceviche, moreish nachos and tasty quesadillas. The Foundry’s signature Foie Gras Gallery is for the true food connoisseur wanting to explore the nuances of fine dining; enjoy the delicacy seared or as a crème brulee, and how about chocolate chilli foie gras pops? There’s even foie gras ice cream – they’ve really thought of it all. The famed carpaccio and tartare small plates stand tall with quality ingredients like the quail egg and truffle olive oil – need we say more? We’re only half way there. The eloquent tasting plates of hand-crafted mains showcase the gastronomic flair and artistry of the chefs. Slow cooked lamb shank, with polenta and rosemary jus leaves everyone at the table astounded whilst the duck confit adorned in orange glaze and braised purple cabbage is a savoury hit that you never knew you needed. Salmon meuniere with confit potato, lemon caper and balsamic dressing alongside the seafood thermidor are also palate pleasers. Of course, the selection of meat with delectable sides like truffle mash potato are a big talking point – job well done, team. There’s a bona fide cheese and grape

If you’re in the mood for delicious Italian food with spectacular views, Mare Mare at Jumeirah Saadiyat Island is the place to visit as Angela Beitz finds out… fact magazine

f you’re a fan of both Italian fare and seafood then Mare Mare at Jumeriah Saadiyat Island will be sure to please. The restaurant is tucked away at the right hand side of the hotel and the views here are so breathtaking looking out over the pool to the beach. Italian chef Simone Federici, has created a fantastic menu with so many delicious options to choose from. There is a great Crudi Bar and Carpaccio menu to indulge, including oysters, red prawns from Sicily and tuna and salmon tartare. The Carpaccio option ranges from octopus to sea bass and smoked swordfish too. To start, we opt to share the eggplant parmigiana; thin slices of eggplant with a rich marinara sauce and mozzarella topped with basil are served up to savour in a terra-cotta dish. This is such a simple dish but hits the spot perfectly and was a beautiful start to an Italian feast. The rest of the menu is made up of lots of other antipasti dishes like beef carpaccio, burrata salad, roasted tomato soup and seafood salad. The menu then moves onto pasta dishes, mains and pizza. For the main event we went for the black squid ink pasta 84

and the tomato and broccoli pizza. The pasta was a real hit, cooked al dente and definitely a dish we will be coming back for; again, so simple but packed with so much flavour. The pizza was also excellent, wood fired and cooked nicely with just the right amount of topping and cheese. The menu also has large main dishes for sharing so this is a great option for those dining with a group and those wanting to try a few different dishes. We couldn’t go past dessert and opted for the berry torta. The biscuit like cake comes served on a large board with berry coulis and cream and a small hammer so you can smash it open for sharing. The prefect end to a great meal. There are also other treats to choose from such as tiramisu, cannoli and gelato. On the night we visit, it’s nearly full and very buzzy. Mare Mare is equally great for a long relaxed meal or for a quick pizza and drink and it’s not hard to see why the venue has become a popular spot in just a year. ✤

ASIA MEETS ARABIA There are few spas in Abu Dhabi that manage to create a flawless marriage between brand identity and location. However, CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi happens to do this seamlessly as FACT’s Shabana Adam finds out‌ fact magazine

W

alk into the mood-lit reception area of CHI, The Spa and you’ll feel a sense of tranquillity. The neutral and deep-hued décor, low lighting, and aromatherapy smells give a calming illusion. On first impressions, you’ll see that Shangri-La has successfully managed to blend its signature Asian style with local Arabic influence and offer a Far East meets Middle East sanctuary. The friendly reception staff treat me to a cup of hot ginger tea and a cold towel to refresh whilst I fill out the consultation form. I like that there’s a picture of the body and I’m able to mark with an ‘x’ the areas of concern for my therapist to concentrate on. This limits explanation time when we get into the treatment room and leaves more time for me to go into zen mode. After slipping into a comfy robe in the cosy communal changing rooms (looking out over the water-surrounded Souq Qaryat Al Beri), I decided to prep my muscles in the sauna. There’s also a very inviting jacuzzi, steam room and experience shower – I would highly recommend arriving 30-45 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to make good use of the facilities. The treatment room where I get to unwind is beautiful, spacious and kitted out with everything you need. It has its own changing area, shower room, WC, a massive bath tub and a large comfy spa bed. Indeed, if you didn’t want to use the communal changing area, you could request to have this exclusive en-suite experience that is all about optimum relaxation. My lovely therapist guides me to a large cushy chair where we begin with a ritual foot scrub. She advises that every single treatment on the spa menu, except facials, start this way. It’s a great added touch! My main reason for the spa visit is to aid me in an overall lifestyle change. Having started to get involved in many different kinds of workouts and yoga classes, I was hoping for a natural remedy to help with tackling stubborn areas and aid in toning as well as loosening tired, tight muscles. I decided to begin my glorious spa time with a 60-minute Firming Arabic Coffee Scrub. Inspired by the ancient Bedouin rituals of the UAE, this treatment begins with dry body brushing to stimulate lymph drainage. It is followed with vigorous scrubbing using a blend of Arabic coffee and sumac which helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite while promoting circulation. The first step of dry brushing actually made me realise how beneficial this beauty trick is to not only helping with refreshing the skin but also for issues such as water retention and general motion. The coffee scrub itself was incredibly invigorating and left my skin silky smooth alongside visibly reducing the appearance of persistent problematic areas of cellulite and uneven skin. I take a nice hot shower, ready for the second part of my chosen treatment: a 60-minute Deep Tissue Sports massage. This is truly heaven sent. The intensive 96

deep-tissue massage focuses on the trigger points affected by stress and strain. Light stretching is performed to increase flexibility and to release tension. My therapist advises that this massage is perfectly suited for active individuals who lift weights and work out frequently, and on the other hand is also good for those whose job may entail sitting in front of a computer or slouched over a desk all day – it helps to ease the tension in stiff areas such as the shoulders and neck. She was correct! Applying medium to firm pressure, the massage is exactly what the doctor ordered and I fall into a sweet slumber for most of it, slipping off the spa bed feeling as light as a feather. The knowledgeable staff and therapists at CHI, The Spa are attentive and informative and the range of treatments are very therapeutic. The spa menu is packed with authentic natural healing methods found in many Asian cultures. This was two hours of pure rejuvenation for the mind and body which I’d highly recommended for busy-bodies. Lock away your phone; turn off the mental switch of to-do lists and get ready for a genuine energy boost whilst being pampered. CHI, The Spa is the perfect place for it. ✤
