CULTURE VULTURE “ “You have to taste a culture to understand it.” - Deborah Cater
I
n true September fashion, the return to reality after a lingering summer was definitely something that we’ve been feeling at FACT. So many new and cool happenings and events were announced last month and, perhaps the biggest and most anticipated of them all is the opening date for the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Mark November 11 in your diary and get your tickets asap; for a sneak peek into what awaits on the other side, turn to p21 and check out the upcoming exhibitions and all the different spaces that you’ll encounter. Set to elevate Abu Dhabi’s position on the global art scene, the opening of the Louvre isn’t only a major architectural feat but also a proud moment for local and expat communities who have witnessed the making of this stunning museum city over the years. Just a month to go so get your cameras at the ready! Staying on the cultural route, every corner of the city is bursting with artistic creativity and we’ve got the lowdown on it all. We speak to Emirati artist Maisoon Al Saleh about her incredible talents on p31; whilst Abu Dhabi Art 2017 takes centre stage starting p37; and we explore some of the pieces on show at the exhibition Hajj: Memories of a Journey (p47). Of course, a huge part of UAE culture is hotel hopping and we’ve got you covered this month. Read all about our staycations at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri (p48) and just next door, the Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri (p52), alongside the urban metropolis that is the Four Seasons Hotel DIFC just a short drive away (p56). Dive into all your favourite regular pages including the latest in entertainment reviews, motoring, fashion, beauty, tech, home and, best of all, our pick of the best dining deals for October. If you haven’t already, go and check out Eat Greek Kouzina at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island (p91) - it’ll be some of the best moussaka you’ve ever tried - promise! With the cooler climate setting in, there’s never really been a better time than now to make your to-do list, get out of the house and discover the city. Much like us, you’ll be surprised at how much creativity hides behind the skyscrapers, sandy beaches and shopping malls. Until next month, happy exploring.☺

THE MUSIC PROGRAMME, which includes Abu Dhabi Classics (running from October 2017 to May 2018), Umsiyat (January 2018), a Bait Al Oud Concert Series and the Emirati Music Series (both year-round music programmes), is an integral part of TCA Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision for the emirate and attracts some of the world’s best musicians and orchestras into Abu Dhabi. Alongside the concerts, performances and renditions from world-renowned musicians in prestigious venues across the emirate, there will also be a vibrant public programme that will include talks, masterclasses and lectures to be organised across Abu Dhabi. HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General, TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “Music has played an essential role in Emirati life for centuries, binding people together and leaving a legacy that we have a duty to preserve long into the future. Our Music Programme blends classical and contemporary, spans different continents and cultures, and has a central theme of unifying different age groups and nationalities through a collective passion for music.” 8

Abu Dhabi Classics, which is for the first time being organised in cooperation with the region’s premier live events company Flash Entertainment, begins a new season on October 12 with a concert by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra from Switzerland in the stunning setting of Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain for an evening of Grieg, Wagner and Beethoven. The following night, the orchestra, which was established in 1806, will perform repertoires from Rossini, Rachmaninoff and Brahms in Abu Dhabi. Both nights will feature US piano maestro Nicholas Angelich. Complementing the Music Programme will be the Emirati Music Series which includes a series of concerts starring prominent Emirati singers and musicians including Ahmed Al Hosani, Said Al Salem and Oud master Faisal Al Saari. Bait Al Oud, the leading musical academy in the UAE under the artistic direction of Oud Legend Naseer Shamma, will again hold a series of concerts and performances as part of the Music Programme. A new series of Umsiyat begins in January 2018 with a programme of outdoor performances combining spiritual music and poetry which celebrate heritage. EXCITING ART AT NYUAD The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is ready for its third season, with all performance spaces now open and ready to host an adventurous schedule of music, dance, theater, poetry, and film. THE ARTS CENTER ANNOUNCED several exciting additions to the line-up for its spring season. Amongst these is Angélique Kidjo’s Remain in Light, which sees the three-time Grammy winner, and one of the African continent’s most influential figures, perform for the first time in the UAE. Kidjo reimagines Talking Heads’ classic 1980 album in a performance full of electrifying rhythms, African guitars, layered backing vocals and more. Making its Middle East debut is Noura by award-winning playwright Heather Raffo, a show produced by Shakespeare Theatre Company that harnesses themes of inclusion and empathy as it challenges our notions of belonging, shame, and sacrifice through the eyes of Iraqi immigrants in New York. In addition to the previously announced artists for the Barzakh festival, 47SOUL, RAM, and The Ex + Fendika, the festival sees two additions: Pedro Coquenão, better known as Batida (March 1, 2018), who brings his combination of old 1970s Angolan sounds with modern electronic dance music; and Dubai’s Al Nuban Folklore Troupe (March 2), with its entourage of 20 dancers and instrumentalists, as they display the hypnotic Afro-Emirati call and response tradition. Aakash Odedra Company returns to present the world premiere of #JeSuis, co-commissioned by The Arts Center. This new ensemble work choreographed by Aakash Odedra explores the 14

theme of empathy that runs across performances this season, by considering the relevance of a life in conflict. #JeSuis will be performed in The Black Box. Kronos Quartet, often referred to as the bravest chamber ensemble in the world, return to perform three programmes in The Red Theater in February next year. These include a concert of new works from their Fifty for the Future initiative, a family programme; as well as a live cinema collaboration with Academy Award-nominated documentarian Sam Green, A Thousand Thoughts, in its regional premiere which was co-commissioned by The Arts Center. Making its Middle East premiere is another Arts Center cocommission, Written in Water by returning artists Ragamala Dance Company and featuring music composed and performed by Amir elSaffar. This multidisciplinary performance at The Red Theater will explore the Indian board game Paramapadam – an early version of Snakes and Ladders that has previously been described as “a feast for the eyes, ears and heart.” ✤

T
he opening celebrations of Louvre Abu Dhabi will include a wide range of public programmes, including symposiums, performances, concerts, dance, and visual arts by renowned contemporary and classical artists. Located on Saadiyat Island, Pritzker Prize winning French architect Jean Nouvel has designed a museum city (Arab medina) under a vast silvery dome. Visitors can walk through the promenades overlooking the sea beneath the museum’s 180-metre dome, comprised of almost 8,000 unique metal stars set in a complex geometric pattern. When sunlight filters through, it creates a moving ‘rain of light’ beneath the dome, reminiscent of the overlapping palm trees in the UAE’s oasis. On display will be the museum’s important collection of artworks, artefacts and loans from France’s top museums. These span the entirety of human existence: from prehistorical objects to commissioned contemporary artworks, highlighting universal themes and ideas and marking a departure from traditional museography that often separates according to origin. In addition to the galleries, the museum will include exhibitions, a Children’s Museum, a restaurant, a boutique and a café. His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) and Tourism 22

Development & Investment Company (TDIC), said: “Louvre Abu Dhabi embodies our belief that nations thrive on diversity and acceptance, with a curatorial narrative that emphasises how interconnected the world has always been. The museum represents the latest innovation in a longstanding tradition of cultural preservation nurtured by the founding leaders of the UAE. “Louvre Abu Dhabi forms one element of Abu Dhabi’s cultural strategy, which safeguards our rich heritage and catalyses creativity. Investment in a vibrant cultural ecosystem supports the UAE’s economic diversification and development as a modern, dynamic society,” he continued. “Louvre Abu Dhabi will inspire a new generation of cultural leaders and creative thinkers to contribute to our rapidly-changing and tolerant nation.” Louvre Abu Dhabi’s story will begin in the “Great Vestibule”, where visitors are introduced to important themes such as maternity and funerary rituals. The dialogue between works from different geographical territories, sometimes far apart, highlights similarities between the canons despite each having its own mode of expression. The galleries will be both chronological and thematic, and subdivided into 12 chapters. Displays include works from the earliest empires, including the first figurative representations, such as the Bactrian Princess created in Central Asia at the end of the 3rd Millennium BCE, funerary practices of ancient Egypt illustrated by a set sarcophagi of Princess Henuttawy, and the creation of new economies with a Decadrachm coin of Syracuse signed by the artist Euainetos. A gallery dedicated to universal religions will feature sacred texts: a Leaf from the “Blue Quran”, a Gothic Bible, a Pentateuch and texts from Buddhism and Taoism. The artistic exchanges on the trading routes during the Medieval and Modern periods are brought to the fore through an important number of ceramic works.

Between Asia and the Mediterranean and then between Europe and America, guests will appreciate how the world’s horizon gradually expanded. A set of screens from the Japanese Namban demonstrate the dialogue between the Far East and Europe. From the image of the Prince throughout the world, illustrated by an important Ottoman Turban Helmet to a more intimate vision of a new art of living, the museum presents an exceptional chest of drawers made in Red Chinese lacquer by Bernard II Van Risenburgh (BVRB, 1696–1766), created in France. In a section about Modernity are Edouard Manet’s (1832–1883) the Gypsy, Paul Gauguin’s (1848–1903) Children Wrestling, Piet Mondrian’s (1872–1944) Composition with Blue, Red, Yellow and Black. On show will be a monumental work by the artist Ai Weiwei (1957) and his questioning of globalisation. Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “With a unique global narrative and a vision to explore the history of art in a fresh context, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a place where visitors can come to understand their own and others’ cultures. Its groundbreaking architecture complements a presentation of exceptional treasures that represent a snapshot of humanity’s creativity, and paves the way for new discussions.” Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first site-specific works installed in the outdoor areas by renowned contemporary artists, interact with the spirit of the museum and the fabric of the architecture. American artist Jenny Holzer (1950) has created three engraved stone walls named For Louvre Abu Dhabi (2017). These cite important historical texts from Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah, the Mesopotamian bilingual (Akkadian / Sumerian) Creation Myth tablet, and the 1588 annotated edition of Michel de Montaigne’s Les Essais. Italian artist Giuseppe Penone (1947) has produced several works specifically for Louvre Abu Dhabi. Leaves of Light (2017) is a vast bronze tree with mirrors placed in its branches to reflect the ‘rain of light’. Propagation (2017) is a wall of porcelain tiles that depict hand-drawn concentric circles originating from the fingerprint of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s founding father. It was produced in collaboration with the workshops of Sèvres – Cité de la céramique in France. Jean Nouvel, the architect of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “After several years of studies and construction, guests will be able to enter this place of light, this revelatory meeting place of a number of planetary cultures beyond the seas and centuries,” he added. “It is an architecture that is protective of its treasures, it is a homage to the Arab city, to its poetry in geometry and light, and, under the large cupola, it is an evocation of the temporalities which inexorably punctuate the hours, days, and the passing of our lives.” fact magazine

aisoon Al Saleh’s talent was first noticed at a young age, when she was in kindergarten and her teacher mentioned to her parents that she was extremely talented, especially in comparison to her peers. This artistic license runs deep through her veins as her Aunt is indeed a fine artist, alongside her Father who is passionate about photography and her Mother who is into fashion designing. As a child, Maisoon was obsessed with her Ghostbusters colouring book and proudly carried it everywhere alongside her crayons. She continued to watch the TV series when she lived in the United States. We love her refreshingly honest answers – who doesn’t like Ghostbusters? Being an Interior Design graduate from Zayed University taught Maisoon the skill set to be able to use any material in constructing anything, from 3D printing using various machines, sculpture, installation, and interactive art which expanded her previous flair for painting,

mixed media, and digital art. “I became not limited working on 2D works, but the whole room turned into my canvas,” she explains. She’s a self-proclaimed surrealist artist who mixes reality with her imagination. Each of Maisoon’s artworks is based on a true story that has either happened to her directly, something that she has heard from a friend or indeed something that she has simply read in a newspaper. For example, in her second solo show, The Dara Chronicles, she produced a set of mixed media images that explore stories and documented accounts of the Dubai-based M.V. Dara, a passenger

liner that exploded in the Gulf on April 8th, 1961. “I grew up hearing stories from my grandfather about that night on the vessel where he was one of the survivors,” she recalls. Newspaper articles and other reports at the time only describe an explosion in the middle of the ship and suggest that the cause was likely sabotage. Beginning with an exploratory dive at the Dara gravesite itself, she exhaustively researched the event, seeking out experiences retold from different personal perspectives. The resulting art works were inspired by letters about the incident written by the shipping company and police investigators, news articles, and stories told by survivors or family members of those who perished in the shipwreck. She further juxtaposed different cultural viewpoints through the presence of three suitcases, symbolising the different nationalities on board—British, Indian and GCC passengers. Portraits of passengers, stories of the explosion and the events that followed illuminate personal narratives versus media accounts. Through these strategies, Maisoon brings viewers into a discussion about the importance of Emirati history and forces
us to challenge how we think about the UAE’s past, memory and its representation in mainstream media. When asked simply, “Why art?” her response is just as thought provoking as her artworks: “Art is part of me, it’s an addiction,” she says. “I can’t even allow one day to pass by without creating something. It gives me the freedom to express myself with no restrictions!” Maisoon’s mother often revels in seeing the mural paintings that her daughter has created. One such visual is the 4 level building located on the 2nd of December Street adjacent to the Etihad Museum in Dubai. Her mum links this back to a childhood memory where she bore witness to Maisoon scribbling merrily on their living room walls.

Always one to step outside the realms of normality, Maisoon told us of how she started to experiment with the medium of underwater painting using the bathtub as her initial starting point. This evolved into her gaining a scuba diving license in 2010: “This is when I started to create some artworks underwater using waterproof, heatproof, and against UV light materials to create part of The Dara Chronicles.” We’re impressed! Even more so when she recalls the time that she was being trained to deal with sharks underwater whilst scuba diving, when a clown fish (y’know, Finding Nemo?) was, well… ‘clowning’ around and wouldn’t let go of her as she was painting underwater. An apprentice in the making! In her work, the focus is on telling true stories about what is happening in the UAE, for example in the series titled The Bright Side of the Bones you can see skeletal figures and different nationalities painted using acrylic on canvas. “Having those skeletal figure represents equality in the UAE as there’s no differentiation here in age, gender, and nationality, we are all equal,” she explains. Due to this method of documentation of the UAE history it’s easy to see why her artworks have been recognised on

an international level. They focus on shedding light on specific topics that haven’t really been discussed in depth or even at all. Maisoon’s perception of the current art scene, and whether or not she is faced with any challenges, is a positive one. “The scene has been growing rapidly in the Gulf and in particular in the UAE,” she says. “Dubai for example has been investing in the culture and arts by hosting exhibitions, therefore it’s attracting collectors to invest in art, either through auction houses or art fairs. Those activities resulted towards a rapid growth in the art market.” This is clearly a lady who knows her stuff and is evidently ‘switched on’ when further interrogated questioned about how she deals with said challenges. “Having such an active, supportive, and growing art scene hasn’t been challenging for me as an artist as you also have the government support in supporting local talents, not just for Emirati artists but also for various nationalities for example, Dubai Culture (Sikka Art Fair) , and Dubai Media Office (Dubai Canvas 3D Art Festival and Dubai Open Museum initiative).” Any encouraging last words, Maisoon? “Do what your passionate about the most, and success will follow you.” ✤

he Hajj: Memories of a Journey exhibition documents the legacy of the arduous and challenging routes that pilgrims travelled across continents, through its largest section dedicated to ‘Journeys’. This section comprises the largest portion of the exhibition, reflecting on the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s personal Hajj journey which he made in 1979. Amongst early television news reports that were aired to give updates on the progress of the Hajj pilgrims, a rare interview from Abu Dhabi Media Company will be shown in the exhibition, showing Sheikh Zayed discussing the purposes of Hajj and addressing political issues of the time from ‘Mina’. HE Yousif Al Obaidli, Director General of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, said: “The Mosque is a unique example of
Islamic architecture, and it plays a key role in representing the universal values that characterise Islam. The Centre has succeeded in attracting five million visitors every year from across the globe to the Mosque and it was named the world’s second favourite landmark by Trip Advisor in 2016,” he continued. “By shedding light on the fifth pillar of Islam and the importance of Hajj, visitors will be able to witness the values of cultural communication that are intrinsic to this practice.” The ‘Journeys’ section will also display a very precise historical account of the evolution of the Hajj routes from the era of ships, and then on to before the invention of aircraft, when the journey to Mecca used to be undertaken by foot, to the present day, where the most common mode of transport is by air. fact magazine

Among the rare photographs in the exhibition are some from the archives of the renowned late photographer Noor Ali Rashid that go back to the age of steamboats, first used to reach the holy land in the mid-20th century, with an image of a ship sinking off the coast of Dubai in 1968 on its way to Pakistan. Tracing the ancient art of determining routes to Mecca by use of astronomical instruments that located guiding stars and the direction of the Qibla, the exhibition will display original tools from the Zayed National Museum permanent collection, such as the copper astrolabe, invented by Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim, in Morocco, around the year 1123 AH (1711/1712 AD). Also featured are devices that indicate the direction of the Qibla from the Nasser Daoud Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, dating back to different periods of Islam. HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General of TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “The exhibition draws attention to the relationship of our Emirati community with this spiritual journey, something which reflects the key values of our beliefs. The most important of these values are equality, tolerance, humility, good character, forgiveness, charity and loyalty to principles.

f you love a good comic book character or you’re a fan of sci-fi and computer animation, this exhibition will be right up your alley! Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) has spearheaded this exciting and innovative exhibition celebrating comic arts and animation. Comic Craze showcases examples of different techniques and materials from fabricated portraits to animated films. Highlighting the flourishing community of comic artists in the UAE, the exhibition highlights the artistic expressions of established and emerging comic artists who depict scenes from society and government. Among the artists featured in the exhibition, Khalid Bin Hamad’s sci-fi animation series, Empire of N, aims to generate a new form of media in the UAE. Empire of N is a mix between action and science fiction with an Emirati twist, where Khalid uses Japanese animated style to reflect on the Emirati identity. The series has a unique element as it presents the audience with an artwork that represents local society in an international style. Sumayya Al Suwaidi, Community Events Manager at TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “The Comic Craze exhibition represents our 46

We experienced the glorious new Vegan Facial. Using only the cleanest products, this facial is like a breath of fresh air for your skin. Much like taking a wheatgrass shot in the morning – the Vegan Facial is great for stripping away dull, tired skin and bringing a natural glow to the surface – all with non-aggressive products. The knowledgeable therapist is attentive and informative throughout the treatment, we love that the facial incorporates a neck, shoulder and upper back massage too – so in between the different stages of the facial, you’ll get a chance to completely relax! This is just one of the great therapeutic treatments available. The spa menu is packed with authentic natural healing methods found in many Asian cultures. We’d highly recommended this facial for busy-bodies who aren’t up to scratch with taking care of their skin. It’s a gentle but effective treatment that left our skin soft, supple and renewed. Put down your phone, tablet and any other tech device; switch off and get your relaxation fix pronto – this is the PERFECT place for it. 50

FINE DINING PERFECTION As far as food goes, the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri has so much to offer with variety and quality being the top priorities. Diners can indulge in a range of international cuisines; pamper your palate with authentic Chinese food at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Shang Palace, or award-winning Vietnamese restaurant, Hoi An, whilst the all-day dining restaurant Sofra bld, and the elegant p&c by Sergi Arola with its traditional Spanish favourites, are also two great foodie spots. Enjoy preand post-dinner drinks at Al Hanah Bar or the informal Lobby Lounge, or relax by the pool deck with a fragrant shisha. For the ultimate in fine dining, we went to experience superb French cuisine at the glamorous restaurant, Bord Eau. You’ll enter a chic and elegant dining room, the kind that you’d expect to find in a grand manor house, decorated in opulent fabrics and furniture with large, comfortable chairs and warm mood-lighting to keep the ambience intimate and relaxed. Bord Eau also gets two other crucial things right: the food and the service. Sophisticated French cuisine is prepared by passionate chefs who use seasonal fresh produce and serve each dish with an artistic expression. We visited during the From Paris With Love night, which consists of a special three-course set menu with your choice of bubbly. There are rose petals on the table, a Paris-themed photo wall to have your picture taken, and even a caricature artist to hand you a memorabilia of the evening. Standout dishes included the super-fresh Grilled Tiger Prawns with avocado, cabbage salad and crushed hazelnut as well as the mouthwatering Slow-cooked veal cheek with onion jam, wild mushrooms and fresh herb pasta. Never have we tasted meat so tender and tasty – the food is definitely a talking point throughout the evening. This beautiful dining deal is ideal for a date night, anniversary, birthday dinner or couple’s treat. The Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi is exactly what you would want from a lavish and quality hotel that will impress on every level. ✤

the world amid modern surroundings, this restaurant has a bistro vibe with all the casual necessities of an inviting city venue. We’re immediately drawn to the open-kitchen style setting, which allows us to peek in at the chefs as they whip up their masterpieces. The restaurant hosts a number of culinary evening throughout the week – keeping things fresh for visitors. Try the Italian night or even the mouth-watering pizzas on any given day – guaranteed food goals. Aside from Afyä, which has a beautiful outdoor dining area that’s ideal for the winter months, there’s also the Lobby Lounge – an enclave that’s popular for business meets or social catch-ups, and the lovely Poolbar where sipping on a cool mocktail became one of our favourite things to do.
TRANQUILITY
With the 301 well-appointed rooms and suites, there’s plenty of space for work and play here. Room types include Superior, Deluxe and Premier, each utilising space for maximum comfort. There are also two suite categories, catering well for small families. Our room is elegantly appointed with tons of space; the bed is HUGE and makes for a beautifully serene night’s sleep. There’s ample storage for those travelling with lots of luggage and the room is big enough to do some quick cardio sprints! What we loved most is the practical and handy design – an LCD television, a DVD player and satellite/cable TV take prime position. There’s a nice sofa chair to lounge on and even a small dining table topped with fruit and sweet treats. The full-size executive writing desk means that work needn’t be a chore, but more a comfy task. There’s even stationery in the drawers and, best of all, a balcony with exceptional views of the beach, canal and in the distant – the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. You’ll get a full-size bath with a lovely walk-in shower and bathtub that’s excellent for a full stretch and soak after a long day in the heat. Deluxe toiletries will also surprise you as will the tea and coffee making facilities, the well-stocked mini-bar and the complimentary drinking water – something that many people take for granted in hotels – not us, we notice, we drink, and we are thankful for the generous supply here!
The premier Abu Dhabi Health Club at Traders Hotel houses a wellequipped gymnasium with changing rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and a private beach. It’s no surprise why people like to stay at Traders Hotel; the beach is golden perfection whilst the pool and gardens are designed to provide hours of relaxation and enjoyment for the entire family – young and grown. In fact, you’re better off heading straight to the beach after breakfast to avoid disappointment in getting the sun lounger of your choice. The hotel provides the ideal outlet for guests to work away their fatigue and rejuvenate their bodies. Those staying at the hotel can also take advantage of spa facilities at the luxurious CHI, The Spa, at Shangri-La next door. There is a dedicated play area for children with swings and other outdoor activities as well – so whilst mum and dad top up the tan, the little ones can have their own fun! There’s very little that we would fault about this hotel. If you’re bringing your own car be prepared to wait a while for valet as the hotel’s location means that it doesn’t have ample parking within the grounds and cars have to be parked outside and across the roads. So, if your car has been valeted, just add another 15 minutes onto your journey. At times, there can be some congestion at the entrance so we’d advise to walk towards the exit and hop in your car once you see the valet bringing it around! With that said, it was nowhere near enough of an inconvenience to put us off staying here again! ✤

W
hile we adore our fair capital, sometimes there’s nothing better than a fun weekend in the bright lights of Dubai. Four Seasons Hotel Dubai International Financial Centre is a boutique-style sanctuary tucked away in one of the coolest areas of Dubai. This beautiful hotel is in the heart of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) district, so it’s handy for business trips but also great for an urban weekend stay. Unlike many of Dubai’s hotels, you don’t have to hop in a taxi to find additional restaurants, galleries and bars which here are within short walking distance, as is Emirates Towers metro station. The hotel has two separate entrances- one entrance goes straight into the DIFC district, where you will find art galleries and auctioneers such as Christie’s and eateries like Zuma and Roberto’s. The other is the hotel’s main entrance where some of the friendliest valet staff will welcome you with open arms. Check in is smooth and surprising as we’re greeted with a cold towel and special chocolate-themed drink (in celebration of chocolate week). This immediately sets the DIFC property apart as a Four Seasons – where we’ve always experienced that extra added attention! We were ushered up to our Four Seasons Room where it was nothing but SPACE! A beautiful fruit basket, healthy nutrition bar and a house made detox drink awaited. Again, a really nice touch that was greatly appreciated after a long, traffic-filled drive from Abu Dhabi.
The hotel has 106 bedrooms (of which 28 are suites) and there is a distinct boutique feel to the beautiful property. Lead-in rooms are a compact 34 square-metres but don’t seem small: space is used cleverly (each room has a chaise longue and work desk), with muted brown tones and clean lines. We loved the large curved sofa, art deco touches, a tree in the corner of the room, and very cool mood lighting which is a great industrial touch to a corporate-type room. The Four Seasons Room is quiet and peaceful with views of the surrounding area and the Burj Khalifa. We fell utterly in love with the luxurious marble bathroom, huge walk-in closet, cosy living area and customised Four Seasons Bed with your choice of mattress topper. The MASSIVE walk-in rain shower was just complete bliss after a hard day’s work, especially with the gorgeous products from Roja. The technologically forward-thinking hotel included modern amenities such as a personal iPad mini and motorised window drapery to further help you to relax and enjoy a convenient and comfortable stay. Be sure to look your best when heading to the rooftop pool. The raised, glass-sided pool allows for close analysis of your front crawl from those working on their tans. The pool is a work of art and to be able to create an area with different levels, plush trees, and a glass swimming pool is genius, making it feel a lot bigger than it actually is. The pool area overlooks other rooftops and buildings surrounding you, and even though you’re in the middle of it all the space felt very intimate and private. fact magazine

Be sure to stop by the spa too. Upon arrival, you’ll get a specialty tea - a combination of aloe vera and subtle rose water, which tasted like a pure cleanse for the soul. The five spacious treatment rooms all have large windows and one with a private shower. After slipping into the most comfy robes, the therapist leads the way to the treatment room – RIGHT opposite the Burj Khalifa, literally. The eucalyptus oil is the standout and the aromatherapy massage gets started with a luxurious Rock Salt Foot Scrub and the depply relaxing massage continued for 60 minutes. Afterwards, with no exaggeration, we even told the staff in the spa that this was one of the best massages we’ve ever experienced – by far the best in Dubai. For a corporate-style hotel, the spa is sure in our top three in the city! Luna Sky Bar should be right at the top (pun intended!) of your dining agenda when staying at the Four Seasons DIFC. It’s a bar cum lounge with sensual décor and a sophisticated intimate atmosphere. Described as a smart, social destination, this place saw business meetings taking place after hours, groups of friends and colleagues enjoying post-work drinks, and diners enjoying gorgeous food as well as the rooftop views of the Burj Khalifa. Creative cocktails, small plates and yummy snacks is what you’ll find here! It wasn’t just the property that was a pleasant surprise but the attentiveness of all the staff from housekeeping to the front desk and bellboy, room service and valet workers, everyone had time for you. This took away the feeling of being in a fastpaced district and rather, when you returned to the hotel after a long day out, it felt like your very own secret haven. Ssssh, only share with the special people in your life!

An enticing cross between Liam Neeson’s Taken and Michael Winner’s Death Wish, the film is studded with some mind-blowing action and could be Campbell’s triumphant return to the big leagues. After the tragic demise of his daughter by a bomb set off by Irish terrorists, Quan (Jackie Chan) embarks on a revengefueled hunt to track down the names of the suspected bombers. Quan’s path to justice is marred with difficulties as British government official Hennessy (Pierce Brosnan), has some plans of his own. DOUBLE DUTCHESS
By Fergie
After what feels like forever, the London Bridge hitmaker is ready to bless us with her muchawaited album. Double Dutchess, featuring Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj was released to an incredibly eager audience and we can’t say we’re disappointed. Incorporating a bit of pop, hip-hop, reggae, R&B and a whole lotta throwback, the album offers a lot of contrasts while also hinting at the singer’s personal life. Carrying a killer concept, M.I.L.F.$ is hands down the most polarising track on the album. In this age of generic, cookie-cutter pop, Fergie rapping about being a super-hot mom is downright revolutionary. While the track is definitely bold and ballsy, it definitely lacks the oomph of Glamorous or Pump It. If you’re a fan of the original Fergie flavour, You Already Know should be right up your alley. The song is a gentle reminder of Fergie’s legit pipes and features a nice infectious flow. While it isn’t fundamentally different to Fergie’s previous work, it definitely carries a fresh new vibe.

With a number of guest stars in tow, the Seattle MC’s first standalone album in twelve years sees a brand new approach to his music. Showcasing a different palette of sounds, textures and vibes, the singer has tried to infuse his own personal happiness into the music. As the singer unveiled the celebratory new song, Glorious, there was no doubt in our minds that the album is a true labour of love. With guest vocals from Skylar Grey and production from longtime collaborator Josh “Budo” Karp and Tyler Dopps, the song sees a rapid percussion and an energising piano loop. Complimented by Grey’s gospel-tinged hook, the song oozes endless positivity and motivation and is the only feel-good anthem you need this season!

A compact crossover set to redefine its segment with style, practicality and innovative technology for every metropolitan motorist. FACT takes the all-new Nissan Kicks out onto the UAE roads for a test drive and here’s the verdict…
W
hen you’re choosing a vehicle to drive in the UAE, what do you look for? Is it the exterior design? Or is it interior comfort? Maybe you like technological features, or are you all about easy driving? Whatever it is that you look for in a car, pay attention because Nissan Middle East wants to give you ALL of this and then some with the brand new crossover, the Nissan Kicks. Launched a few months ago into the Middle East market, Nissan has now ticked more boxes for drivers who want a crossover that combines innovation and class with style and performance. Let us tell you all about what makes this model so special… The Nissan Kicks is solely aimed at urban driving environments – think everywhere from leafy suburbs to compound communities, the laid back Abu Dhabi Corniche and even rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road. It’s abundant features cater to the UAE driver’s every motoring need; on the few windy days we drove the car, its robust exterior was like a guard against the heavy breeze, whilst the car’s generous ground clearance (200mm) provides an elevated driving position and a high eye point for excellent all-round visibility something that you’ll appreciate at rush hour. 66

The Nissan Kicks also handles very well – its agile and smooth maneuverability makes the car a joy to drive (turning something that can be a stressful task in the UAE, into an enjoyable one). If you’re all about looks, you should know that this car is VERY visually appealing. The Kicks features established Nissan design signatures such as the V-motion grille which dominates the car’s front end. Also present are the boomerang head and taillights, and the “floating” coupé-style roof with a wrap-around visor look to the windscreen and side glass. To put it simply, for us, as young professionals working between Abu Dhabi and Dubai – this is definitely a car that is perfect for getting you to important meetings as well as being the designated ride for an evening out with friends. The body features an advanced aerodynamic design, which optimises fuel consumption (we were impressed that a full tank cost was no more than AED70 dirhams) and minimises noise. The spacious interior too, is instantly recognisable as a Nissan design thanks to the gliding wing shape stretching the width of the dashboard – not to mention, seats are super spacious and comfortable, especially ideal for those leisurely drives between the two emirates, or weekend road trips further afield. The Kicks is packed with features to help the driver in every way.

THE NISSAN KICKS TARGETS YOUNG PEOPLE WHO
It’s the first model to utilise the concept of Nissan Intelligent Mobility which uses smart, relevant technology to make the driver’s life easier while also making advances towards Nissan’s long term goal of zero emission and zero fatality motoring. The Nissan Kicks targets young people who are early adopters of forward-thinking technology and those who appreciate and embrace the way it can both simplify urban driving and connect them more easily to what matters. In that regard, the Intelligent Mobility features within the Kicks aim to reduce stress for drivers through innovations such as the Around View Monitor (AVM) and the Moving Object Detection system (MOD). Parking is also a breeze; using four cameras, placed at the front and rear of the car and in both door mirrors, AVM creates a bird’s eye 360-degree view of the car which can be displayed on the central monitor and used as a parking aid. The cameras automatically get to work when you shift to R (reverse) mode, and in places like the UAE where street parking, general side stops and even tight spaces in the mall can be difficult to navigate, having the cameras is a HUGE help.

MOD is another great benefit of the Kicks: when the MOD system detects a moving object – a pedestrian, for example – a warning is sounded to alert the driver to the hazard and prevent a potential accident. This could help those drivers who may forget to check their blind spots when switching lanes or on those tricky corners with pedestrian crossings. Safety is the name of the game! The tech doesn’t stop there. Kicks owners will relish the convenience and simplicity of the suite of systems that are accessible via the centrally-mounted, 7-inch colour touchscreen. These functions include navigation, audio, and bluetooth phone connections. Complementing the touchscreen, and ideally located in front of the driver, a further screen in the main cluster of dials relays information from the on-board drive computer, audio system and navigation systems, as well as displaying warnings. Vehicle settings can be easily adjusted using the four-way selector on the steering wheel. We found that the UAE maps on the navigation system were not suited for manual input; there was limited recognition of streets, buildings and specific locations like hotel names. However, the way around this is to lock into the Sat Nav under “points of interest” – from big malls to apartment towers, your nearest petrol station and even street parking spots – the GPS system had a good amount of places to lead you to the right area. A great help for those who may not be so familiar with UAE roads, and for those times when you might run out of data on your phone! Among a host of comfort and safety technologies included in Kicks, its chassis control, supported by

advanced electronic systems known as Active Trace Control, Active Ride Control and Active Engine Brake, is a truly outstanding feature. Active Trace Control is an innovation that intervenes during driving through corners to ensure the intended trajectory is maintained by discreetly applying brakes to wheels individually. This has the effect of preventing a sudden loss of grip or stability. Similarly, Active Ride Control, applies the brakes for a split-second after the car has encountered large undulations in the road, to reduce the “bounce” effect on the suspension. This simple, effective solution is lighter and less complex than expensive and heavy adaptive damping systems. To counter the “coasting” effect often associated with automatic and CVT gearboxes, Kicks is equipped with Active Engine Brake. When the accelerator is released, typically approaching a corner, engine braking is applied to stabilise the speed. This range of tech will help on main roads to give you a smoother drive as well as tight corners in underground parking, for example, and every on-road situation that may require the your car to come to your rescue. Nissan Kicks has class-leading fuel efficiency thanks to its advanced 1.6-litre engine and lightweight platform. Power is rated at 88kW (118HP) and torque of 149Nm, so you’ll get the added benefit of superb performance too. Word of warning: there were some days when the automatic unlocking of the car took a while. Whether it was the key or another element, it took us around 10 minutes of circling the car and pressing the key for the it to respond. A malfunction that isn’t ideal, but nowhere near a good enough reason to put us off! This Kicks keeps things compact with the most tasteful design and technologically driven features. This is NOT a mum and dad car. It’s for the young professional who wants to be at the top of their game in both business and pleasure – a refined vehicle to safely and stylishly cruise the UAE roads. ✤ fact magazine

JAGUAR E-TYPE ZERO
J
aguar Land Rover Classic has recently presented an electric-powered Jaguar E-type at the Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest that took place at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, last month. The car, known as E-type Zero, has been restored and converted at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Coventry, not far from where the E-type was born. Tim Hannig, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: “E-type Zero combines the renowned E-type dynamic experience with enhanced performance through electrification. This unique combination creates a breathtaking driving sensation. “Our aim with E-type Zero is to future-proof classic car ownership. We’re looking forward to the reaction of our clients as we investigate bringing this concept to market,” he added. The Jaguar E-type Zero not only drives and looks like an E-type, it also offers outstanding performance. It’s quicker than an original E-type: 0-100km/h (62mph) takes only 5.5sec, about one second quicker than a Series 1 E-type. Tim added: “In order to seamlessly combine the new electric powertrain of E-type Zero with the dynamic set-up of the original E-type specification, we have limited the vehicle’s power output. We believe this provides the optimum driving experience.” The E-type Zero vehicle, displayed at Tech Fest, is a restored Series 1.5 Roadster. It’s totally original in specification, apart from its 21st century state-ofthe-art powertrain and modified instrumentation and facia – although these are also inspired by the original E-type. LED headlights are also used to achieve energy efficiency. Again, they adopt the styling theme of the original Series 1 E-type. The E-type, launched in 1961, has regularly been voted the best-looking car of all time. Even Enzo Ferrari called it “the most beautiful car ever made”. E-type Zero’s unique electric powertrain was developed by an electric powertrain specialist in conjunction with Jaguar Land Rover engineers and to a specific brief from Jaguar Land Rover
Classic. It uses some technology and components borrowed from the upcoming I-PACE, Jaguar Land Rover’s first production all-electric vehicle. The E-type Zero has a ‘real world’ range of 270km (about 170 miles), helped by the low weight and good aerodynamics. It uses a 40kWh battery, which can be recharged from home overnight (typically in six to seven hours, depending on power source). ✤

The lead ingredient has been sourced from Cape York, Australia – a remote, largely unexplored and unspoilt peninsula. The indigenous cypress oil known as ‘blue gold’ is the world’s only naturally blue essential oil distilled from a tree, which has then been unconventionally mingled with the salty breeze aromas of sea fennel, grown wild on the shoreline. This dynamic coastal fragrance makes the perfect gift for the adventurous spirit.

The restaurant serves Italian cuisine that is as impressive as the service, ambience, and the views it offers overlooking Yas Marina, Marina circuit and the bright lights of the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi. Cipriani is decked out into several parts; the main restaurant, the bar, the cigar lounge, a wine room, the private dining space, the banquet room, library and a sprawling outdoor terrace. The well-appointed restaurant has all the makings of a destination for special occasions and on the night we visit there are plenty of guests celebrating birthdays. The carpaccio is a real hit too and it’s not hard to see why it’s been on the menu for decades with it’s perfectly sliced beef and lemon mayonnaise. The fresh flavours of the beetroot, asparagus and goat cheese salad were also great and we couldn’t have been happier with these entrée choices that are perfect for sharing. We then move onto a main of mushroom risotto which is perfectly rich and creamy, the seabass that was such a beautifully piece of fish done with cherry tomatoes and capers and the veal chops which were so tender and moreish. FRESH FACED We try the perfect facial to hydrate our tired skin at Sense Spa, Rosewood Hotel Abu Dhabi.

SPA & WELLNESS •
T
he constant battle to achieve perfect skin in the UAE is no easy job but this is where high end facials that really give results come in. We are trying the Intraceuticals Facial at Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s Sense Spa which is high-tech facial which uses products from this popular Australian brand. The facial will work as a pick me up to refresh our lacklustre skin. We love this spa as they’ve managed to create a space which is luxurious yet understated and is run by super professional staff. We sip on our welcoming drink as we fill out a consultation form that will help our therapist to know our skin’s needs. We change into a robe and slippers and are ushered into the super chic treatment rooms that Sense Spa has to offer. We talk through our concerns with our therapist and she explains that there are two types of facials to choose from with the Intraceuticals products: the opulence package or rejuvenate package. Both have similar properties but they accommodate different needs. The opulence package is designed to brighten, balance and smooth skin, whereas the rejuvenate package is for skin that is in need of some restoration – it’s designed to hydrate, lift and tighten. Our skin needs the rejuvenate option so we go for this. The treatment begins with thorough cleansing the skin to boost circulation and to remove impurities then moves onto the key step which is the most important component of both Intraceuticals oxygen therapies. This is the step where cold air from an oxygen gun blasts a serum made up of hyaluronic acid and collagen onto the skin, forcing it deep into pores. Hyaluronic acid is a chemical that is found naturally in the body. It hydrates and plumps the skin, helping to keep it looking full and youthful. It also attracts fluid to the cells it is present in and helps the body produce collagen – the protein responsible for making the skin stretchy and firm. This is the real unique selling point of the facial and once this process is done to one side of our face, our therapist shows us the difference compared to the side that has not been done yet and the results are impressive. Clear, lifted and plump skin is revealed and we couldn’t be happier. To complete the treatment, a topical cream is applied to seal in the serum in a process known as hyaluronic layering. This is the perfect treatment should your skin need a real boost or if you have an important event for that requires a fresh, glowing complexion. This is definitely a spa worth trying, especially if you really want to treat yourself and escape the world for a few hours. Our skin is unbelievably smooth and super hydrated and we feel very relaxed. ✤

There are so many special things but my favourite has to be the views from the highest active helipad in the Middle East. Located at the top of the hotel, they are just breathtaking! Secondly, the grand staircase in the lobby makes you feel like you’ve just stepped onto the Titanic, it really is sensational. Lastly, the
