I

f my jumbo passport is anything to go by, then you might want to take a seat for an entire week whilst we share all of our travel stories. For me, wanderlust is the one addiction that keeps life healthy. There’s just no better feeling than flying, being in the sky and peeking out at the world below, before landing in a place that’s completely new and exciting. Plus, how lucky are we to live in the Gulf ? From here, it’s made possible for us to visit some of the most incredible places in the world with the region’s top airlines. So, if you’re spending June planning your summer vacay or early autumn escape, let us help you out! Turn to p27 and begin your Wanderlust 101 journey. Start discovering all the destinations that need to be on your radar. From adventure and wildlife to history and hidden cities, all of our travel picks have something special to offer every type of holidaymaker. Of course, one of the other advantages of being in the GCC is having amazing places close by to visit for a long weekend or much-deserved staycay. Our June spotlight is cast on the majestic Bab Al Qasr (p37); the iconic InterContinental Doha The City (p43); and the beachfront haven that is the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach (p49) – where will you choose to go? Before summer well and truly shows its hot and humid self, there’s an entire month of Iftar and Sohour gatherings to enjoy with your loved ones. Ramadan marks a beautiful time in Abu Dhabi and as a friendly reminder, we’ve got a round up of all the best dining offers to experience around the country from p14 onwards. Art enthusiasts, rush to p55 and read all about the talented Zahraa Al-Saffar who we discovered on instagram. NAMIBIA, AFRICA

KENYA, AFRICA

For most travelers, the majestic scenery and diverse wildlife of Namibia remains hidden while vacationing in Africa. In this era of immense globalisation and technology, Namibia remains untouched and unspoiled, still deeply entrenched in its culture and traditions. Namibia and its strikingly clear skies and abundant wildlife make it the perfect getaway you need and deserve. The country offers respite to your tired eyes with rust-red sand dunes and sprawling golden deserts. Make sure to visit the Namib-Naukluft National Park to experience the world’s highest sand dunes of Sossusvlei. The burnt-orange dunes change colour with the sun’s movements and make you fall in love with nature all over again! For some incredible game viewing, head over to Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s best game reserves. See elephants, blue wildebeests as well as Damara dik-dik, Etosha’s smallest antelope! If you’re craving some recreational fun, the coastal town of Swakopmund offers a range of outdoor activities as well as a buzzing nightlife. Or if you’re looking for something a bit more low-key, spend the night stargazing into Namibia’s cloudless night skies with a number of astronomy-related activities on offer at the country’s various lodges.

Offering breathtaking natural beauty and unique wildlife, Kenya is the sensory treat we all need to experience at least once in our lives. Home to The Big Five, Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of the most popular safari destinations on earth. See lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and many more animals during the Great Migration in the summer and early autumn months. Kenya’s gorgeous beaches are unlike any you have ever seen before; they serve as meeting points for socialising with friends and family and are generally not crowded – the beautiful white sand is a definite plus! If adrenaline is your thing, opt for a climb up Mount Kenya, Africa’s second tallest peak. Choose from a total of three different summits, depending on your difficulty level and get your heart pumping. Or if you’re more of a water baby, go snorkelling and diving in the warm waters off the Kenyan coast. If you do visit Kenya, take some time out to visit the capital, Nairobi. CREATIVE CUISINE We’d imagine nothing less than top-notch quality food at a 5-star hotel of this calibre, and to our pleasant surprise, Bab Al Qasr went beyond expectations. At Artisan Kitchen you’ll find international dining through a lavish buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Feast on fresh juice, yummy pastries and more to start the day; dine on oven-cooked Italian pizza and fresh salads for lunch and a tasty grilled fish or meat dish for dinner, amongst the many delicacies on offer throughout the day. You can also request dishes to be prepared a la minute using locally farmed ingredients. It’s at Limo Restaurant where we’re really faced with food to talk about. Its urban atmosphere and decor reflects the modern menu offering grilled fish and meat infused with Peruvian and South American flavours.

This special culinary gem is one of the latest contributors to the rise of Latin American fare in the city. With palate-pleasing, unique flavours, wildly tasty pairings and eye-catching presentation – Limo is all about a sensory experience. We’d highly recommend the the fresh and tantalising Chalaco; seafood ceviche with crispy calamari, cancha, rocoto pepper and leche de tiger. Don’t be put off by the exoticsounding ingredients – it tastes SO good that we wish we didn’t have to share it! Another standout is the lime-infused Kadafi Nikkei Shrimps with whipped Peruvian potatoes and aji amarillo pepper and lime juice – to say it’s packed with flavour is an understatement – delicious. For dessert, opt for the unusual yet scrumptious Panna Cotta which comes with chicha meringue, kumquat puree, chicha sorbet and cashew nuts – H.E.A.V.E.N on a plate. WEEKEND STAYCAY

t’s hard not to say “wow” when you first see the impressive structure of InterContinental Doha The City. It’s contemporary, sleek and completely stands out from other buildings in the area. The lobby atrium is the first thing you’ll want to post on instagram, followed by the stunning suites and (when you want to relax) the openair rooftop pool. After a smooth check-in process – there’s a special desk for IHG members too – we whizz up to our suite on the 47th floor.

SUITE SLEEPS Views are incredible and go on for miles – in fact, we stand and stare out of the windows for some time before exploring the rest of this apartment-style room. What we really loved is the ample closet and storage space – there are enough hangers for all your clothes, places to pop your suitcase out of the way and all your in-room wants like shoe shine, safe, iron and ironing board, and lovely robes and slippers. As you’d expect with a suite, this sanctuary above the city is split into two areas – a large living room with cushy seating, a coffee table, work desk, television and all your tea/coffee, snacks and yummy amenities. THIS is the side to put up your feet and relax with a cuppa, or get comfy with your laptop to catch up on work. A short walkway separates the living area from a gorgeous bedroom space. With a 40

“WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW OF MY P I E C E S, I L I K E TO THINK THAT MOST OF MY WORK HAS EMOTIONAL UNDERTONES”

ahraa Al-Saffar’s love of art was first ignited on a trip to Barcelona. Like many who visit the stunning Spanish city, she was in awe of the incredible architectural works by Gaudi. So much so that his infamous Sagrada Familia went on to inspire Zahraa’s theme for a practice GCSE Art Project. “I chose Catalan Modernism and painted the Sagrada Familila whilst also incorporating the use of mosaics,” she recalls. “I definitely wouldn’t say it was a masterpiece. But, being given the freedom to run with my own ideas and not follow any rules was a game changer for me and that’s when I really grew to love creating art.” It’s in that very sentiment that Zahraa’s interest and passion for producing art comes alive. She’s captivated by Arabic and Islamic art – Iraqi in particular. “I love the strong use of colour, the intrinsic patterns and the use of characters to tell a story,” Zahraa explains. “I take a lot of inspiration from Iraqi Artists like Muayad Muhsin and Wassma Al-Agha.” From the sounds of things, you might be deceived into believing that Zahraa is a full-fledged, round-theclock artist – this is not the case. When we discovered her work through our favourite way of searching for hidden local talents – instagram hashtags (of course!), Zahraa humbly admitted that she’s always looked at art as a personal love and hobby – as something alongside her day job that gives her fulfillment as a creative outlet. She also hadn’t shared a lot of her pieces on social media - just with family and friends. In fact, when we (very quickly) decided to feature 52

Zahraa as the arts interview for our annual Ramadan issue, we learned that this talented lady is still spotlight shy when it comes to showcasing a lot of her work. Well, let’s crack that shell! For someone viewing Zahraa’s work for the first time, you’ll see that her pieces embody contemporary visuals, lots of colour and are open for interpretation. “With the exception of a few of my pieces, I like to think that most of my work has emotional undertones,” Zahraa shares. “I love painting characters with their eyes closed and letting the viewer decide the feeling themselves. Are her eyes closed because she’s sad? Thoughtful? In love? You choose. “I’ve had my friends look at my work and argue between themselves on how the characters in my paintings are feeling. My answer is always the same – it’s subjective,” she adds.

Many artists, both in a professional capacity and those who paint for fun or as a pastime, may refer to cultural references or at least a specific idea, person, tradition – anything – as their muse. We’re intrigued to learn about the different social influences in Zahraa’s work. She tells us: “My work is full of Middle Eastern cultural elements. From the ladies draped in the traditional abaya from head to toe, to the jewellery and use of colour – a lot of my friends joke about the the “voluptuous female form” and I incorporate this into a lot of my pieces – again, that all goes back to how a fuller figure is celebrated in the Arabic culture. I also paint a lot of palm trees, dates, and domes, and love to experiment with calligraphy,” she smiles Zahraa paints with acrylics because she loves the thick, textured brush strokes on a canvas. A lot of the time, she takes it further and thickens the paint with a medium, something that will allow her audience to really see and feel the texture of the paint. In terms of tools, aside from bushes, she also uses sponge, paint knives and what she calls the “most magical tool” – her fingers. “There are so many different ways you can use your hands to blend, smudge

and create interesting patterns and I love experimenting with my fingers,” she says. “I’d say most of my paintings have involved an element of finger work. Even my charcoal and pencil pieces heavily rely on blending using my hands to get the effect of shadows and shades.” Zahraa instinctively gravitates towards brighter colours, and when she’s looking

for inspiration, she finds herself searching for Arabic and Islamic history and traditions. “With everything that’s going on in the world today, I like to think that my work brings a sense of positivity and optimism by combining the two,” she says. Living in Dubai, Zahraa is surrounded by a wealth of artistic knowledge, talent and events. She believes the UAE is definitely a place with great opportunities for the creative community. “It seems like there’s an art event or festival every week - I love it,” she exclaims. “There are so many opportunities here for artists and I definitely think the UAE is championing artistic talents in a huge way at the moment. In addition to the galleries and artistic hubs like DIFC and Al Serkal Avenue, there are countless cafés, hotels and restaurants that allow artists to showcase their pieces and I love how budding artists’ works are increasingly being used to shape the décor for all these wonderful venues,” Zahraa says. “In my opinion, there’s no better way to decorate.” Probably one of the most challenging things to encounter as an artist is knowing when to stop, when to put down the brush or the pencil and say “it’s done” – what’s this process like for Zahraa? fact magazine

“That’s a tough one,” she admits. “A while ago I finished one of my pieces, hung it up on the wall and then six months later I took it down and added a few elements to it before hanging it back up. I think it’s done now, but ask me again in six months – you never know! “When I get immersed in a project, I’ll often dream of the brush strokes and colours I’m using then wake up with a new idea or direction to take the piece,” Zahraa explains. “I always give myself that window for a few months at least before I officially declare a piece as ready to add to my website.” The ultimate dream for Zahraa is for her art to become such a priority where she could leave her day job and unleash the creativity full time. Her most important piece of advice for young budding artists is “consistence is key” – even if you only paint for your own pleasure, Zahraa encourages you to keep at it as that’s how you improve. She says: “Go to art galleries, get inspired, get out of your comfort zone and don’t be hard on yourself – the beauty of art is that there are no rules.” On that note, look out for the name Zahraa Al-Saffar at an exhibition near you. ✤ GO: Follow Zahraa Al-Saffar on instagram @zahraadxb for more information.

One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter By Scaachi Koul

ELECTRO/POP

ALT/INDIE

Relaxer By Alt-J

Get ready to snap out of your summertime blues with Alt-J’s upcoming third album Relaxer - presenting the indie rock band in all its wonderful, upbeat glory! After the success of their previous album, they’re continuing in the same tone with their newest record features choirs, haunting vocals and gritty beats. 3WW, an experimentally abstract song opens as a blurry soundtrack but grows into a striking, ever changing banger. The band utilises their simplistic lyrical genius to create a romantic and intense atmosphere. In Cold Blood is powerful and dramatic with brass elements that redefine the band’s former minimal sound, while also retaining their classic playfulness and absurdity. Alt-J’s trippy sounds have the ability to make you feel disoriented and deeply aware all at the same time. While Alt-J have never been ones to go by the book, they continue their tradition of creating beautifully-bizarre music. They’ve claimed this to be their best work till date, and you know what? We just might believe them!

Truth is a Beautiful Thing

From recounting a trip to her parent’s homeland in India to reliving a mortifying experience in a women’s dressing room, Scaachi Koul’s confessional essays as a child of an immigrant will make you laugh out loud. The collection of essays takes the writer’s personal encounters and transforms them into an entertaining and witty review of modern times. She applies her life experiences to understand broader themes like racism, sexism, prejudice and girlhood while being both fun and moving.

By London Grammar

If you can’t get enough of London Grammar’s achingly sweet single Truth Is a Beautiful Thing, get ready to be swept up in a tide of emotions because there’s a lot more where that came from! While their first album focused more on shared relationships, their sophomore album is all about your relationship with yourself. Truth Is a Beautiful Thing features a comparatively varied collection. Oh Woman Oh Man is much more upbeat than the title track and features singer Hannah Reid’s sumptuous vocals over a subdued guitar line. Rooting For You, a stirring, delicate track also focuses on lead singer Hannah Reid’s voice accompanied with sparse and echoing instrumentation in the background. While there’s no denying Dan Rothman and Dominic Major’s production prowess, Hannah Reid’s vocals are certainly the band’s unique selling point. After staying unnervingly quite after their first album, the trio have returned with the sound we know and love to remind us all of what made fans fall in love with them in the first place!

THE ALL NEW 2017 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY A VAST IMPROVEMENT ON THE PREVIOUS MODEL, THE NEW DISCOVERY OFFERS AN UNFORGETTABLE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. FACT TOOK IT OUT FOR A SPIN AND HERE’S THE VERDICT...

T

here are some cars that are just exciting to experience. Cars which are designed to help you express the adventurer within. Land Rover have been producing top quality off-road SUVs for several decades and the Discovery range for 27 years. This has ensured their continued solid footing in the world SUV market. When we discovered we were to test drive the brand new Land Rover, we knew we were in for an exhilarating journey. At first glance, the change in the overall design of the new Land Rover’s exterior shape is obvious. Gone is the box shape of precious models, replaced by a far more aesthetically pleasing design, with sleek lines and smoother contours. Despite the drastic change, this vehicle is still all Land Rover and pays homage to previous models with its sloping roofline and stadium-styled seating within. We have to say the design is an improvement, not just in looks, but it also

CITY RIDES

ensures less wind resistance, allowing for better aerodynamics and a quieter ride. Slipping into the cabin, the feeling of space and comfort were immediately prominent. The leg room in all three rows of seating is ample as well as the headspace. Quality materials have been used in the creation of the interior and there is storage space everywhere! Although the layout could be considered minimalistic, it is very practical and we found the entertainment system easy to operate. The second row of seating has a flat floor in front of it, allowing for three people to sit comfortably abreast. These seats can recline and slide backwards and forwards to ensure your comfort. To enter the final row of two seats, one merely has to press a button on the second row seat and it will fold forward automatically. One must then slide the seat forward to gain access. We can say without doubt, this SUV was well designed to seat seven adults comfortably. Features

include storage space, charging points and electrically heated seats, which are all found throughout the vehicle. The boot boasts a huge amount of space as the option to automatically lower either the last row or both back rows of seats is on offer. All seats are equipped with weight sensors, so they will not fold down if someone is sitting on them. This massive loading bay is fully flat allowing for the efficient and stable packing of goods. A thin sitting shelf folds out of the boot, allowing for one to sit and admire the view. This shelf can hold up to 300kgs of weight, so don’t be scared of breaking it. The fact the new Land Rover is 450kgs lighter than the previous model is obvious as soon as you get on the road. This is partially due to the chassis and body of the car being one unit as opposed to previous generations fitting two separate parts together. It is also due to much of the body now being constructed from lightweight aluminium.

CITY RIDES

The height and position of the driver’s seat makes one feel like they are driving on a thrown, surveying the surrounding kingdom as it quietly rolls by. The electro powered assisted steering is responsive and combined with the vehicle’s surefootedness, one always feels in complete control. The new Land Rover comes with air suspension as standard which contributes greatly to a smooth ride. The overall drivability is a marked improvement on the previous model. This high performance SUV is powered by Jaguar Land Rover’s efficient range of six cylinder engines, all paired with a smooth and responsive ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Discovery consists of a comprehensive suite of off-road driving technologies that ensures the vehicle’s supreme allterrain capability is easy to access for even inexperienced drivers. Land Rover’s multimode Terrain Response two system optimises a range of settings, from throttle sensitivity to gear change characteristics, to suit the driving conditions at the turn of a rotary controller. We found the overall experience of the new Discovery to be relaxing and comfortable. It is an absolute pleasure to drive a responsive vehicle capable of handling any terrain or conditions. The fact it is very easy on the eye does not hurt either. ✤ fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

STILLS AT THE CROWNE PLAZA YAS ISLAND IS ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST POPULAR SOCIAL SPOTS AND IT’S NOT HARD TO SEE WHY. WITH ITS LAID BACK VIBE AND LOVELY VIEWS, THE MAIN FOCUS HERE IS THE FABULOUS FOOD WHICH TAKES TRADITIONAL PUB DINING TO THE NEXT LEVEL, THANKS TO CHEF DE CUISINE SHIBOJYOTI BASAK. Chef Shibojyoti boasts almost 14 years of experience in fine dining restaurants around the world. He began his career at the prestigious Oberoi Group in India, before moving on to work for Michelin-starred chefs Georges Blanc in his restaurant aboard a cruise liner, and Raymond Blanc in the UK, and then moving to the Middle East. In the Gulf, he spent time at the Movenpick Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, before bringing his considerable experience to this amazing venue. Chef Shibojyoti revamped the menu at Stills around eight months ago, taking all the old menu’s favourites and adding his own elements and style to it. “In each dish I create, I try to showcase my passion and creativity and most importantly I feel it should be a culinary experience and not just a meal,” he explains. We’re no strangers to trying our body weight in food and this is exactly what awaits. The first dish was the Prawn Vampino, which is prawns prepared tempura style, but stuffed with crabmeat and wrapped in Nori, served with Cholula sauce and salsa verde. Unlike anything we’ve tasted before – you HAVE to order this delicious starter to taste what we mean! Going 82

fact magazine

with traditional pub fare, we also try the huge portion of Nachos; corn chips stacked with guacamole, salsa, beans and cheese. SO good! If you’re a seafood lover another tasty option is the Pacif ic Crab Cakes. “We have a great kitchen and service team, it’s my second family,” Chef Shibojyoti says. “The guests in here are mostly the regulars who stay in an around the place or in Staybridge Suites next door. It’s really great to meet them, understand them, and serve them. I feel lucky that not only do we have great food and drinks, or probably the longest bar in Abu Dhabi, we have great outdoor sitting with mesmerising views, which creates a great environment,” he adds. For mains we opt for the Stills Wagyu Beef Burger and the Braised Beef Brisket which is a signature dish of the restaurant. It’s not hard to see why the Beef Brisket is a favourite. It comes served with creamed sweetcorn and sweet potato fritters, and a rich, liplicking gravy. “We cook it for around 16 hours, because the brisket is from the front quarter, near the belly,” Chef Shibojyoti explains. “The fibres of the meat are

“WHEN IT CAME TO MAKING THE MENU HERE, I USED A C O M B I N AT I O N O F H E A LT H Y AND HEARTY FOOD AND ALSO I DIDN’T FEEL SHY TO ADD DISHES LIKE THE WAGYU BURGER WITH HOMEMADE PA R M E S A N B U N.”

really tough, but there is also a lot of flavour in it, so the best way to cook a brisket is slow, so that it breaks down the fibres and makes it tender, and keeps in all the flavour. It’s marinated overnight, and cooked at 100 degrees for 16 hours.” The Wagyu Beef Burger is also excellent, beautifully presented with a juicy piece of wagyu accompanied by lettuce, onions, tomato, mushrooms and cheddar cheese, all packed into a homemade parmesan bun. The burger is served with fries and coleslaw and it’s a real hit at the table. Chef Shibojyoti tells us: “When it came to making the menu here, I used a

combination of healthy and hearty food and also I didn’t feel shy to add dishes like the Wagyu burger with homemade Parmesan bun. As adults we always crave for food our Mum’s used to make like sundaes or fried chicken. “Those are the flavours I’ve tried to create in Stills with our own twist and style,” he smiles. Judging by the food we tasted and the in-depth knowledge and cooking techniques of Chef Shibojyiti, you’re in for a mouth-watering time at Stills! ✤ GO: VISIT STILLS AT CROWNE PLAZA YAS ISLAND. CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

W

hen you walk out of a restaurant and claim to have just eaten one of the top three meals of your entire life, how do you move onto the next plate of food? This is the exact statement we made, and the very dilemma we faced after test driving (or rather, eating) our way through the brand new menu items at BU!. Now, we’ve been to this urban eatery many times and it never disappoints. But, the particular dishes that happened to pass our lips and hit our taste buds on a lively Friday afternoon, were, to simply put it, mind blowing. What we LOVE about BU! is the distinct yet effortless way in which it blends a sophisticated atmosphere with a social vibe and, more importantly, impeccable food. Its elegant aura emanates Latin American sensuality and style with the most tasteful touches in both its interior and what’s served up on the mouthwatering menu. This energetic pan-Latin restaurant prepares food in a modern style with innovative cooking methods and beautifully-presented dishes, which ties

86

fact magazine

up nicely with BU!’s effortlessly chic and worn-in industrial surroundings. We began our epicurean adventure with zesty Salmon Ceviche mixed with sweet soy, rocoto and mango. If you’re an avid ceviche eater – this is going to impress – and if you’re new to the appetiser, prepare for an explosion of flavours and freshness – just divine. This was followed by the most simple yet powerful plate of Truffled Huachinango made up of red snapper, black truffle, lime and fried quinoa. It’s the intense smell of the truffle that sends our inner foodie into overdrive. One bite and we’ve tipped over the edge – HOW can something so light, taste SO good?! There’s no skimping on the truffle, which is a massive bonus for anyone who wants a food awakening! Another starter worthy of a standing ovation is the Gyozas Tacu Tacu A Lo Macho. Not only is it a pretty dish, every dumpling is packed with the taste and aroma of mixed seafood, rice, beans, aji amarillo and coriander. It’s the deeporange sauce that makes this dish a bona fide winner; with a hint of spice, this is when Latin American fare gets fiery (in the most pleasant, palate-pleasing way!).

Next up, a staple that many have tried to recreate and failed to do so. Not BU! though. Here, the humble Pino Empanada holds its own from start to finish. Stuffed with Patagonian beef, caramelised onion, oregano and quail egg, we can guarantee that you’ve tasted nothing like this hot pastry sent straight from the food Gods a.k.a the chefs in the kitchen - all hail! The most surprising and creative dish on the menu had to be the Res Tataki Y Tuetano – Japanese beef, marrow, chimichurri, pecorino, and puffed rice. All the ingredients are neatly wrapped in the beautiful cuts of beef and each piece is placed on an actual arm-length marrow – YES. It’s different, delicious and delivers on all fronts. The mains took us to a whole new level. The Camaron Zarandeado was the most mmmh-inducing dish with tiger prawns, dried aji, lime, mushroom and pineapple all cooked in a colourful concoction with sweetness meets seafood flavours and textures – TO.DIE.FOR. Out came the chef with a table-friendly grill – this interactive dish was the Lomo Al Trapo; full blood wagyu tenderloin prepped in non-alcoholic red wine, roasted garlic and chimichurri. Meat lovers, you haven’t tasted anything as juicy, rich and smoky as this. It’ll leave you with all the happy feels! Dessert is show-stopping all by itself. The Cheesecake is delightfully light with its blackberry sorbet, lime and tapioca accompaniments, whilst the Churros are served in a round dish, with Mexican coffee ice cream and hot chocolate sauce

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

– it’s gorgeously moreish and complete culinary magic! There aren’t many venues in Abu Dhabi that talk the talk and when it comes down to business, can walk the walk, too. But when you’re craving for new flavours and you want something that’s consistently reliable and fun with excellent service; BU! can tick all those boxes… and then some! ✤ GO: Visit BU! at The Hub in The Mall, World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi. HIGH STEAKS RODEO GRILL LOCATED IN THE HEART OF ABU DHABI’S BEACH ROTANA HOTEL, HAS MADE QUITE A NAME FOR ITSELF IN LITTLE UNDER TWO DECADES. YOU SEE, RODEO GRILL WAS THE FIRST ALL AMERICAN STEAKHOUSE TO OPEN IN THE CAPITAL BACK IN 1998 AND IS STILL REGARDED AS ONE OF THE PREMIER CHOICES IN THE CITY. FACT SENT OUT & ABOUT UAE’S DAVID TAPLEY TO DINE AT THE FAMOUS STEAKHOUSE - DID IT INSATIATE HIS CARNIVOROUS DESIRES? LET’S FIND OUT…

89

ON THE MENU

A

s the name suggests, cattle is the focus of the dining experience at Rodeo Grill, but this is not just any ol’ steakhouse. What sets this established restaurant apart from its numerous com-petitors is the proficient service, high quality ingredients and a penchant for doing things a little differently. The steakhouse is generally associated with being a masculine environment, and while Rodeo Grill does feature an abundance of dark wood and upholstered leather, the feeling is less man-cave and more sophisticated lounge. Seating is designed with comfort in mind and walls are tastefully decorated with black and white prints depicting images of the American frontier. Copper accents accentuate the colour scheme and a subtle use of velvet provides additional textures. A small private dining area is available for those in search of privacy. Rodeo Grill offers a menu of steakhouse classics with a few wild card dishes thrown in for good measure. Diners can expect Burrata and Yellowfin Tuna amongst the usual foie gras, steak tartare and lobster cocktail. We were entirely surprised by the seared Seawater Prawns, arriving in a vibrantly coloured reduction of orange, carrot and mustard seeds, that’s decep-tively sweet but perfectly balanced. The Sea Scallops also deserve a mention for their delicate texture complemented by veal bacon, peas and pear. While those looking for something a little more indulgent should give serious consideration to the Truffle Fries, arriving at the table like a volcano, erupting with parmesan cheese and the distinct aroma of truffle. It’s easy to see how this has become somewhat of a signature dish for the restaurant. When it comes to steak, diners are in for a real treat. Each table is allocated a ‘meat master’ to talk you through the various cuts and guide you into selecting the right steak based upon your own personal preferences. With the raw meats displayed table-side, expect a crash course is marbling and butchery that acts as a good way to educate those slightly

90

fact magazine

perturbed by the various choices. Whether you select the milk fed veal, Irish John Stone or the Argentinian Black Angus, it’s unlikely you’ll be disappointed, as the meat remains juicy. The Australian Blackmore M9+ is simply unmissable, offering 100 per cent Wagyu, grainfed for a minimum of 650 days (that’s almost two years) and it literally melts in the mouth. All steaks are served with a selection of potatoes, sides and sauces and although we’re partial to a béarnaise, it’s not entirely necessary as the flavours of the meat alone are exceptional. Complemented by refined plating that features a small stack of onions rings, a sprig of rosemary and cherry tomatoes to accompany the meat. Desserts maintain the same level of quality and if you have room we strongly suggest the Chocolate Souffle which is unbelievably light and accompanied by a vanilla ice cream to cut through the inevitable richness. Failing that, the Cheesecake Donuts are an interesting hybrid of two wonderful desserts that we’ve not experienced elsewhere. Rodeo Grill has some strong competition in the city but with a loyal following of regular din-ers, a relaxed and inviting environment and a real character in the form of manager Jomon John, who injects warmth and personality into dining, this place feels like a second home. Although steak reigns supreme, there are a number of other options available (black cod, chick-en, gnocchi and lobster)

but when the steak is this good, it’s hard to give anything else a chance. This is a steakhouse offering a competitive pricing structure reflective of Rotana’s reputation for good value for money and one that should definitely be on your radar. ✤ GO: Rodeo Grill is open from 12.30pm to 3.30pm for lunch and 7pm to 11.30pm for dinner. s far as Lebanese restaurants go, there are none quite so stylish as the upscale twostorey Byblos Sur Mer located at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi. No expense was spared in the design of this contemporary, 300-seat standalone waterfront venue where guests are transported to the coastal city of Byblos in Lebanon. This low-lit fine-dining eatery is undoubtedly the perfect place for a fullon Lebanese culinary journey. Creative Syrian Chef Raed has over 15 years experience indulging his passion for cooking Arabic food. Chef Raed and his team offer diners an award-winning menu encompassing a range of flavours with traditional hot and cold mezze, soups and salads, grills and marinades, Lebanese delicacies and desserts as well as freshly baked items from the on-site Lebanese baker. As well as heading up the Byblos Sur Mer kitchen, Chef Raed also oversees all the Arabic menus at the hotel. So, you’re in good hands! Warm bread straight from the oven,

LEBANESE MOUNTAIN salads and mezze dishes that are designed to share are always a good way to start a meal. While we may have omitted the usual favourites of hummuos, moutabal and kebbeh from our order, in a bid to widen our horizons and palates, we couldn’t resist some fresh Tabouleh. The Halloumi was grilled to perfection and not overly salty, the Kasbeh W Rouman - pan-fried chicken livers - were served with sweet pomegranate molasses and the main dish was Masshab, a large portion of flavoursome chargrilled chicken in vine leaves. On this occasion, we chose Raheb, tasty whole roasted eggplant with vegetables and apple cider vinegar, but we’d also highly recommend the usual favourite, Aljami. It’s an eggplant puree topped with fried eggplant, molasses and walnuts – utterly DIVINE, especially when eaten with some of the warm Arabic breads. Our special request of Cheese Manakish was fulfilled even though it wasn’t on the menu, we just had a little craving for this Arabic flat bread topped with cheese and lo’ and behold, it was YUM.

Full from our savoury selections we still, as always, had room for dessert. The obvious choice would be the Middle Eastern staple, Umm Ali (similar to bread pudding) but it’s good to branch out with some different choices. The rich and smooth giant Fig and Chocolate Fondant served with toasted marshmallows on sticks was very indulgent and worth the wait, whilst the oversized Baklava filled with cream was delicious too. It’s always worth trying the Halawat El Jibin Bil Assal too, a delightful combination of Ashta cream, berries, mint and cashew nuts. You can’t fault the stunning presentation and flavours of the food and as we’ve discovered with all Middle Eastern cuisine, the portion sizes are over generous - we had way too much food for two people even though we had ordered quite conservatively (as instagram would let us say, #noregrets). Reminiscent of a Lebanese mountain house, Byblos Sur Mer has a charming atmosphere and exudes character with little historic touches such as the stylish teal and gold menus that feature ancient Phoenician men. Luxurious gold decor and sumptuous furniture, gorgeous floor lanterns, elaborate hanging light fixtures, ornamental shisha pipes and a wall dedicated to famous Lebanese entertainers all add to the vibe. As do the live singers crooning a range of modern classics, on other evenings, the restaurant welcomes an Oud player who performs more traditional old-world style music. It may be an elegant fine dining establishment but it’s not in the least bit stuffy, everyone was friendly and accommodating. The ambiance was set by the smartlydressed servers, who are pleased to make recommendations and eager to encourage you to order many dishes as well as sample a selection of beverages. So what is Byblos Sur Mer’s secret? It has to be the passionate team who are proud of their heritage and cuisine, their enthusiasm to share their culture and give guests a memorable experience. This creates perfect harmony of the old world embracing the new. ✤ GO: Visit Byblos Sur Mer at InterContinental Abu Dhabi. Call (0)2 666 6888 for reservations and more information. his spa really needs no introduction. Tucked away in the beautiful Emirates Palace with a separate entrance, this space is impressive even before entering. Large fountains are surrounded by frangipani trees and the main pathway is decorated with symmetrical lines of Moroccan lamps. The spa is large but has a lovely, relaxed feel with low lighting and Moroccan décor. It feels like such a secret haven and you’ll find more water fountains inside covered with layers of white and red rose petals. I fill in a consultation form while freshening up with a cold towel and a delicious ginger tea. The therapist leads me to a treatment room and again I’m marvel at the décor. The treatment rooms here are really mind-blowingly beautiful. The whole spa has a gorgeous Arabic vibe with mosaic tiling in bright colours. Our treatment room is what you would expect of Emirates Palace with lots of beige and dark brown accented with gold touches. I’m booked in for a 60-minute Signature Palace Massage and the Forlle’d Customised Facial. After changing into a chic robe, I shuffle over to a large chair to begin with a foot ritual. My feet are submerged in a warm bowl of water with white, red and yellow rose petals and are cleaned with a delicious jasmine scrub and milk for softening. I lay on the treatment bed which is beyond comfortable with double duvets and lots of cushioning. The massage is tailored to focus on your individual needs and as I’m experiencing 96

a lot of tension (from too much deskwork) in my upper back, neck and shoulders, this is what I request to focus on. The massage aims to enhance muscle recovery and ease stress from daily life. The therapist starts on my upper back as this is the most troubled area. Her touch is strong, mostly using her elbows and forearms but this technique is used to really get down to the pain of the muscles. She then works on the lower back, legs and arms, finishing with a soothing head massage. This treatment is excellent and really works hard to relive deep-seated tension. It’s then time for the Forlle’d Customised Facial. This facial works in three phases to firstly extract impurities from the skin whilst maintaining hydration, followed by a microdermabrasion resurfacing procedure to remove lifeless skin cells. The facial uses Forlle’d laboratory patented low molecular Hyaluronic acid to intensively hydrates and restores the dermal structure of your dehydrated skin, combat free radicals, improve cellular respiration and microcirculation, and prevent redness. Essentially, the main focus is to get the products down to your deepest skin layers. The facial involves tools hooked up to a machine, placed over your skin to remove impurities and then to hydrate with the Hyaluronic acid. There is no pain involved - its actually very relaxing. The treatment finishes with a heave; think super hydrating mask and you’re left with glowing skin. The whole spa experience will leave you floating on air. The treatments are fantastic, staff are friendly and super professional and the surroundings are beyond stunning. ✤ GO: Visit Emirates Palace Spa at Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi. Robert Clark General Manager, Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi

City Insider WHAT MAKES HOLIDAY INN ABU DHABI STAND OUT FROM ITS COMPETITORS? With many fantastic hotels in Abu Dhabi, it may be difficult to identify at first glance what differentiates the Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi from its competitors. We have a great product, one that many would agree far exceeds the stereotypical Holiday Inn, but as soon as you step in it becomes clear that it’s not the bricks but the team that work there. I am very proud to be part of a team that is so focused on providing genuine and true hospitality to a very diverse range of guests.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE ATTRACTION IN ABU DHABI...

SHARE SOME OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL GOALS FOR 2017?

In Abu Dhabi, we are fortunate to have many attractions for visitors and residents alike. My personal favourite is the Emirates National Auto Museum. It’s a short 30-minute drive south on the way out to Liwa showcasing the Emirates fascination and passion for anything that can be driven both on and off road. You know you are approaching when the over sized Land Rover looms on the horizon. There is an amazing display of perhaps 200+ cars, from the very large to the very small and everything in between.

The key goal for Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi in 2017 is to build on the success and reputation the hotel has achieved within the market as a great hotel. In order to stay competitive, we recognise the importance of continuing to develop all elements of our service and product offering and creating an exciting food and beverage destination is an integral part of this. Having already opened SushiSan in September 2016, we will open another great restaurant in September this year along with an upgrade of an existing outlet likely.
