A

nything CAN happen during F1 weekend and that’s the whole excitement. It’s now my fourth year in Bahrain to experience the Grand Prix race and all the adrenaline-packed entertainment that takes place on and off the track - and it never gets old. Yes, this is the 13th year that Bahrain is hosting a Formula 1 race, and some might not be so interested, but it’s just impossible to not feel the thrill that ripples throughout the country when the stars behind the wheel, celebrities from far and wide, and crowds of thousands upon thousands of visitors come to our charming island to join in the revelry. 2017 is no exception when it comes to going all-out for F1; turn to p35 and get your calendar at the ready, there’s SO MUCH cool stuff happening down at the Bahrain International Circuit as well as the hotels, restaurants, clubs and more for residents and out of towners to look forward to. We may see some of you around for the biggest parties, namely at Coral Bay and Klub360 or at the mega concerts at BIC - enjoy! Easter is a big deal in Bahrain for April, and there’s so much to check out for the celebrations. We’ve picked our favourite places to gather, so choose one and make your reservations today! In Fashion Focus, the uber cool and sophisticated Ted Baker gets a shout out for its unusual and extraordinary trends for SS’17 (p71) – there’s something for everyone to get wardrobe envy and with the new store now open in City Centre Bahrain, you can shop the collection at leisure. From the Chef ’s Table at Furn Bistro, The Westin Bahrain City Centre (p83) to the Foodie Corner in Links, Royal Golf Club (p87), and the Culinary Spotlight at Teatro, Downtown Rotana (p91) plus more of the best yummy hotspots in town, we’re satisfying all those taste bud cravings, too! Fact Finds

Say Yes to YaSalam! After the success of its debut in Uptown Village, Budaiya Road, fast casual diner YaSalam! is now open at Hamala Hills.

You fell head over heels for their shawarma, salads and juicy burgers so, now, YaSalam! is giving you more of what you love! Head to Hamala Hills and be prepared for your taste buds to rejoice. The family-friendly hangout also caters to youngsters, with exclusive vintage arcade games such as Street Fighter 2 and Pac-Man to keep them entertained and add a touch of retro to the décor. The eatery, which is a part of Al Abraaj Restaurants Group, has successfully grown its reach locally and regionally. YaSalam! first debuted four years ago in Al Aali Shopping Complex, and then went on to establish its first branch in Dubai last year. While the menu boasts a wide selection of unique shawarmas, salads and sides, newly added burgers and kids’ meals are also proving popular. Healthier options, aside from multi-grain bread, include halloumi or falafel wraps. Dishes come with an unusual twist on traditional fast-food favourites and are value for money, with an inspiring range of high-quality ingredients including vegetables and meat, all prepared fresh in Bahrain. Customisation is key when it comes to the food, and the possibilities are truly endless. The restaurant’s concept of traditional Arabian and Western street food with a dash of adventure is inspired by the Arabic expression ‘Ya Salam’, used when one is extremely impressed. It is characterised by funky, action-packed pop art featuring Middle Eastern elements that reflect its authentic core. With plenty of colour to lend an attractive vibe, this eatery promises to be not just a feast for the taste buds but also for the senses. Customers can either choose their fare directly off the menu or build their own dish with the restaurant’s distinctive checklist menu of toppings, meats, breads and more. With up to six delicious hot or cold fillings, the customised combination is sure to satisfy even the biggest palates. The menu features everything from a variety of beef, pulled lamb, chicken breast, grills and Arabic saj dishes alongside the healthy Superfood Shawarma, the street food staple that is malghoom and an entire new burger meal selection, suited for meat lovers and vegetarian diners, too. In addition, YaSalam! now delivers to more areas too. Aside from Seef and Saar, new places include Madinat Hamad, Hamala, Al Jasra, A’ali, Janabiya, Boori, Dumaistan, and many more. Y.U.M.M.Y! ✤ GO: Call 1743 4317 for more information. YaSalam is also now on Talabat. 10

Lean Back With Fat Joe @ Klub360

F1 weekend is going to be well and truly LIT as one of rap music’s greatest rolls through for a night of legendary lyricism and nostalgic hits. That’s right, Fat Joe is coming to KLUB360 at Elite Crystal Hotel and it’s going to be TURNT! Back in 2004, the radio and every party you went to was spinning one tune that had EVERY single person up on their feet – Terror Squad’s Lean Back – and the man at the helm of this now iconic rap song is coming to Bahrain for F1 weekend. Get ready for Fat Joe up close as he takes you back down memory lane to the good ol’ days or hip hop and rap. Joseph Antonio Cartagena, p.k.a. Fat Joe, is one of rap music’s most influential artists. He was born and raised in the South Bronx area of New York City by parents of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent. Growing up he was constantly influenced by his family’s diverse passion for music and surroundings. Fat Joe explained how powerfully impacted he was by expressing, “Latinos before us who had the opportunity to do it just didn’t know how to do it. They came in trying to do this black music, waving flags, but we’re trying to kick in the doors for other Latinos and represent our people, and it shows.” Under Relativity Records, Joe released his full-length debut, Represent, in 1993. Immediately, it catapulted the single, Flow Joe that soared to the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart. Two years later, he produced his sophomore effort, Jealous One’s Envy – the album peaked at number #7 on the Top R&B/ Hip Hop Albums. Fat Joe changed record labels by signing on with 48

Atlantic Records and created his own imprint - Terror Squad Records. In 1998, Joe released his RIAA certified platinum third album, Don Cartagena. His fourth album (2001) featured a star-studded troupe of Ashanti, Ja Rule, Busta Rhymes, Petey Pablo, Ludacris, R. Kelly and others alongside artists from his Terror Squad label - it produced the international hit What’s Luv? (remember this club banger?!). In 2004 Fat Joe released the debut Terror Squad album True Story which spawned one the most played Rap Records of 2004 in Lean Back. In 2007, he was featured on DJ Khaled’s singles, We Takin’ Over and the remix to Khaled’s I’m So Hood, and on the International anthem All I Do Is Win. In 2012, Fat Joe released The Darkside Volume 2, which ushered in his chart-topping R&B hit Another Round featuring Chris Brown. Recently, the world-famous rapper released his biggest record to date with Remy Ma and French Montana called All The Way Up which has hit Top 40 in five weeks and led to four different remixes including one with Jay Z - the first time in 20 years that the two artists have featured on a project together. ✤ GO: Fat Joe will perform at KLUB360, Elite Crystal Hotel on F1 Weekend. Dom betrays those closest to him while they try to bring home the man who made them a family. The crew faces trials that test them like never before while they trot the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world.

Director: F. Gary Gray cast: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham Why it’s worth watching? Get ready for a wild ride as the Fast and the Furious franchise returns with an explosive new installment. While the movie has all the makings of the ultimate Fast and Furious experience; big stars, cool cars, action-packed sequences, and great explosions, it also features unexpected twists and some fresh new faces. We see Dom (Vin Diesel), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and the crew leading a pretty peaceful life until a cyber terrorist named Cipher (Charlize Theron) lures Dom into a life of international crime. The fast family and federal agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) crisscross the globe to convince Dom to become the good guy again while saving the world from Cipher’s vicious motives. The Fate of the Furious is the first in the series to hit the streets of New York City along with insane action set in Berlin, Russia and Cuba. Fans will also get to see a surprising cameo by Helen Miller - a breath of fresh air for the 15-year-old franchise. Expect explosive sequences, a crazy-good cast and lots of car crashes.

The Lost City of Z What’s it about: Based on a true story, Percy Fawcett journeys into the Amazon and stumbles upon previously unknown evidence of an advanced civilisation. He keeps returning to the jungle in order to prove his theory which ultimately leads to his mysterious disappearance.

“James Gray truly cements his position as one of the most distinctive and laudable living filmmakers.” – The Lost City of Z

Director: James Gray cast: Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller Why it’s worth watching? A tale of extreme courage and passion for the knowledge of the unknown, The Lost City of Z tells the story of an explorer driven to the verge of obsession. Starring Charlie Hunnam as Percy Fawcett, the film is a compelling true story of a British military-man-turned-adventurer. Fawcett discovers evidence of a lost civilisation in the “green desert” of Amazonia and becomes fixated on proving his case right. His theories are dismissed by scientific organisations but he continues on his quest, determined. Also starring Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson, the film is an immediate classic and unlike anything we have ever seen before. James Gray truly cements his position as one of the most distinctive and laudable living filmmakers. It might not be for everyone but its delicate and methodical narration is definitely worth the trip to the cinema!

The Ride

By Nelly Furtado

From I’m like a bird to Maneater, Nelly Furtado’s music has always managed to move us, thanks to her non-traditional voice. Get ready to go ‘Whoa, Nelly’ all over again as her sixth studio album is LIT! While in the past she’s heavily collaborated with various artists including the likes of Timbaland, The Ride, surprisingly, features no collabos. The album follows a modern pop-alternative theme and definitely establishes a whole new niche. Islands of me is an offbeat synth-pop anthem while Cold hard truth is infused with punk and bounces along on a beat and is reminiscent of her iconic partnership with Timbaland. Pipe Dreams, a hazy, mellow song has a much more airier and lighter sound. The album solely focuses on Nelly’s own music and lyrics - which we LOVE. Fans looking for an extension of her previous chart pop odysseys might have to look elsewhere as her newest offering is a production of John Congleton with the tracks being a middle-ground between her Whoa, Nelly and radio-pop-centered days. 56

Automaton By Jamiroquai

It seems to be the season of comebacks as Jamiroquai, the British funk and acid jazz band is also gearing up to make waves in the music world with their eight studio album, Automaton. Adding new life to a dying music genre, the London-based band returns with a new electronic sound- a transition we certainly approve of! The title track, a sci-fi electronic number with an air of disco-funk, initially sounds very different from their previous work. The music goes into a heavily electronic direction with some cyber-rapping towards the end. Cloud 9 has a future funk sound accompanied with a disco groove and stunning vocals. According to the band, their latest music is meant to represent the rise of artificial intelligence and technology and forgetting to appreciate the simpler things in life. After a seven-year-long hiatus, our expectations were high and the musicians certainly hit the nail on the head. Go, give it a listen and tell us what you think!

Adele, the troubled wife of a local psychiatrist bumps into Louise, a single mum who also happens to be the mistress of Adele’s husband. Adele and David’s picture perfect marriage soon starts to unravel before Louise and it becomes very clear that something is very wrong with their relationship. Pinborough’s exquisite storytelling is addictive and consuming while nothing can prepare you for that explosive ending. The slow building suspense is beautifully written. The story will shock you and leave you in awe of the writer’s genius.

TT

he Boxster has often been referred to as the poor man’s 911 and perhaps in the past this may have been a fair reflection. Times have changed however and the masterminds at Porsche has pushed the Boxster experience to a new level. Keeping the old 918 Boxster in mind, the new design highlights of the 718 S are subtle yet easily recognisable. The front end is wider in appearance, with a more pronounced bonnet emphasising the iconic Porsche arches. A new spoiler angles back towards the wheels with deeper air dams and integrated LED indicators. Another upgraded feature is the newly designed bi-xenon headlight units with integrated daytime running lights. Viewing the sides, the mirrors are a new design and the air intakes have been enlarged. New 19-inch wheels are fitted as standard. The rear features a

wider appearance with the old strip spoiler being replaced by a modern panel with an integrated rear wing. The entirely redeveloped taillights are distinguishable by the threedimensional LED technology and fourpoint brake lights. The presence of two boots is another novel feature, 150 litres of space at the front and 130 litres at the back. Upon slipping inside, the cabin is a typical Porsche set-up with a low driver orientated seating position. The upgraded interior is complete with new elements, such as the instrument panel and all-new PCM unit, featuring mobile phone and audio interfaces, as well as Sound Package Plus with 110 watts of audio power. We found the new predicitve touchscreen to be very user friendly. Let’s focus on performance. The engine sits 30cms behind the driver. This positioning lowers the

island RIDES

Boxter’s center of gravity, a point made obvious when hitting the bendy roads. The car is well balanced with solid grip allowing for a lot of fun to be had on the tarmac. The steering is accurate and gives you great feedback when driving. One does not have to travel at high speeds to get the desired enjoyment out of the experience. With the weather being as glorious as it is in the Gulf Region at this time of year, many would prefer to drive with the top down, wind in hair and who could blame them? A great feature is the roof mechanism being operational at speeds of up to 50km/ph. The new chassis tuning and stronger brakes facilitate passionate and sporty driving. The brakes used are the same as those in the 911 Carerra. With regards to its driving dynamics, the new roadster emulates the original 718 sports cars. Its electromechanical steering system results in the 718 Boxster S becoming more agile and easier to steer, both on the race track and in everyday traffic. Models equipped with the Sports Chrono Package feature an optional selector on the steering wheel, which allows one to switch between the various modes. These include normal, sport, sport plus and individual. It also boasts a sport response button that when pressed allows for maximum sport response and maximum turbo boost pressure without having to engage full sport plus mode. The newly developed engine with

turbocharging results in the 718 Boxster S developing 350 hp (257 kW ) from 2.5 litres of engine displacement. This Boxster model features a considerable power gain of 35 hp (26 kW ) compared to its predecessors and this is obvious when opening up on the road. Thanks to the new turbo engines, efficiency has been improved, resulting in up to 13% lower fuel consumption. This sports car has a four-cylinder flat engine, which combined with turbocharging results in torque being significantly boosted. The 2.5-litre engine has a maximum torque of 420 Nm, available from 1900 rpm to 4500 rpm. When equipped with Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) and Sport Chrono Package, the 718 Boxster S sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, which is faster than a base 911 and holds a top speed of 285 km/h! So what’s the verdict? Porsche has once again showcased their never ending ability to improve on previous on-road offerings. The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster S is a capable and attractive sports car. It has both the look and the performance capabilities one would desire from a Porsche and it stands proud as a statement of acheivement for all those lucky enough to have one in their garage. ✤ GO: Visit the Porsche Centre Bahrain in Sitra or call 1745 9911 for more information. fact magazine

New Porsche 911 GT3

T

he Porsche 911 GT3 delivers motorsport-like performance, a systematic lightweight construction and an unfiltered driving experience. In the new generation of the radical two-seater, the connection between everyday driving and the racetrack is more intense. At the heart of the enhanced model is a four-litre flat, six-cylinder engine. The extremely high-revving naturally aspirated unit with 500 hp (368 kW) remains virtually unchanged from the thoroughbred 911 GT3 Cup racing car. A redesigned chassis with rear-axle steering and the systematic lightweight construction are specifically tuned to convert the engine power into superior driving dynamics. Developed on the same test track and manufactured on the same production line as the racing cars, Porsche’s motorsport technology has once again been incorporated into a road-approved sportscar. The design of 911 GT3 leaves little doubt as to its purpose. The dominant carbon rear wing emphasises the sportscar’s aerodynamic form. The lightweight front end and front spoiler have been optimised for an even better airflow. Further aerodynamic enhancements are evident on the lightweight rear end with exhaust air openings and on the new diffusor. The 911 GT3 is available to order now. It will be launched in Bahrain from mid-July, with a starting price of BD55,900.

FOR MEN Stake your claim to the good life in laidback menswear with a quietly competitive streak. Relaxed shapes sport striped trims and performance fabrics – such as neoprene and bonded jersey – to keep would-be rivals on their toes. Impressive details like rubberised zip cords and bungee-style pullers are pointedly placed in the spirit of one-upmanship. Raise a few eyebrows with offbeat, chalky tones. Cloudy petrol and dusky pink, accented with bright blues and outrageous reds will set curtains twitching all over town. Texture is highly sought-after this season, with a hankering for suede bomber jackets, nylon outerwear, mouliné, and link stitching on knitwear that borders on obsession. Printed linings attract jealous stares, with enviable depictions of meticulously trimmed gardens making for a cause célèbre. Bags fit right in with the sports luxe trend with their rubberised leather finish. New scuba fabric shapes are a tantalising addition, the branded webbing and orange contrast zip pullers the subject of fierce fascination. FOR WOMEN Ted’s womenswear causes a stir with brazen femininity and unabashed romanticism. Classic silhouettes boast pristine lines and architectural folds across pieces in which to see and be seen. Prints are unrivalled, with hand-drawn manicured gardens, enticing pearls and layered oriental blossoms – nothing short of sensational. Accessories demand attention, with Ted’s signature bow snatching the limelight on strappy stiletto sandals and structured handbags featuring daring statement clasps and timeless top handles. INDUSTRY Q&A

Hi Mr Hanna! Tell us about your day-today role as Executive Assistant Manager at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa? I oversee one of the largest food and beverage divisions in the country, outdoor catering, banquet facilities with 34 function halls and meeting rooms, 20 outlets to include 10 fine dining restaurants, three bars, four lounges, inroom dining and two coffee shops. Usually I start my day at 7am by checking the breakfast and conferences set up for the day. I meet with the General Manager to discuss the day ahead, as well as meeting with the Executive Chef and Executive Pastry Chef to discuss the operation for the day in the kitchens. It is during these meetings when we also talk about the food quality and presentation, and the possible improvements in order to ensure guest satisfaction in all of our restaurants. I meet with the Food & Beverage Managers to discuss the plan for the day and how to tackle and improve on any potential challenge. By noon, I make rounds in all our outlets, checking if everything is well. I interact with some guests, get their feedback and take their advice in case there is any room for improvement. In the afternoon, I work on the business development and strategies for the restaurants; finalising the future special events and activities calendar, attending some meetings with other colleagues related to hotel operation, and doing research about the new market trends in terms of innovation in order to keep ourselves ahead in the game. In the evenings, I go around the outlets once more to check the operation and events that are happening. I interact with the team and guests to check satisfaction, and then my day usually ends by 8 or 9pm – often, later! In your role, what are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of being an Executive Assistant Manager? Bahrain is an open country with different guest profiles in terms of nationalities, expectations, culture and taste. Therefore, the main contest is how to satisfy each and every individual and make them

come back again and again. Then, working with so many nationalities, different educational backgrounds, different languages and diverse cultural backgrounds, is also a challenge, however the most rewarding part is being able to bring each and every one together as one big team, working towards one goal.

Not only is everything cooked with authenticity in mind, it’s served with a contemporary touch. “We make traditional Khaleeji cuisine with our own western twist,” Chef Hany says. “With almost 20 years of experience in the industry now, it’s comfortable for us to play around with the ingredients and the presentation – the platters, the glassware – we experiment all the time.” We get straight to it, ready to devour every dish. Immediately, there are a number of winners at the table when the starters come out. The Smoked Moutabel - chargrilled eggplant mixed with tahina, labneh and pomegranate seeds smoked over apple wood - packs intense flavour and we can’t stop scooping it up with freshly baked bread. Similarly, the Muhammara - walnuts, tomatoes, chilli, roasted red capsicum with extra virgin olive oil - is rich in taste and another big palate pleaser. We enjoy bites of the Bahrain Greens (jarjeer, soft feta, dates and pomegranate with palm heart) and the 84

Bistro Tabouleh too, which is made up of kale, quinoa and tomatoes dressed with zesty lemon - yummy! Moving onto the mains, Chef Hany tells us about the Prawn Fie Qataath. “The Fie Qataath for example, it’s traditional Bahraini food,” he says. “My grandma would cook this dish and it’s all about whatever ingredients you have in the kitchen, you cook them all and cover the top with rice, ready to be flipped over and served to guests who are visiting your home.” The dish is brought to the table on a trolley and flipped over in front of the guests so you can admire the process and skill before indulging on delicious rice and juicy prawns cooked in all the right spices - D.I.V.I.N.E. The Lamb Rump is delightfully juicy and tender whilst the Quinoa Madrooba is every vegetarian diner’s dream with roasted pumpkin, sautéed vegetables, dried onions and almonds. The Furn Burger with mouthwatering shredded beef brisket as well as the delicate Gulf King Prawns and the tantalising Mixed Grill all give us the happy feels with every bite we take! The moment we’ve all been waiting for - the heavenly Kunafa - YES! Gloriously stretchy sweet cheese encased in kataif pastry studded with almonds doused in rose and orange blossom syrup - our hearts (and our bellies) couldn’t handle the perfection! “My message to everyone would be; come and try the food – you’ll find something you love – we have a dish for every single person,” Chef Hany says. We 100 per cent agree! ✤ GO: GO: Visit Furn Bistro & Bakery at The Westin Bahrain City Centre. Call 1717 4441 for reservations and more information.

R

estaurants work really hard to master all kinds of cuisines from every corner of the globe in order to satisfy diverse palates. Teatro, located in the outstanding Downtown Rotana is one of these crowd pleasers. Very elegant yet gracefully humble; the dÊcor is creatively minimal but with such great presence. When the elevator stops at the fourth floor, your eyes meet the bar where a wide variety of brilliant handcrafted cocktails that are artistically served. The lounge has a few tables and a beautiful entertainer whose saxophone and flute playing is as charming as her singing. On the other side of the tables, the sushi bar is a pleasant scene with a variety of sushi rolls and sashimi as well as other fresh fish is displayed. A glass floor-to-ceiling vino cellar makes a creative partition between the lounge and the first dining area. Tables for four are set to the right, with a view on the lively Manama streets. To the left, a big high table with bar style stools and a view of the open kitchen will delight those who want to grab a drink before dinner. Another vin cellar separates us from the second dining area where the restaurant ends with a mirror wall glamorously decorated with silver chains and small red lamps – simply mesmerising. The overall atmosphere is a romantic, laid back one and the olive green that dominates the appliances spreads a peaceful vibe, whilst the the dreamy music sets the mood for a great night. A plate of prawn crackers and homemade tamarind sauce prepared our taste buds for what was coming our way, and a glass of Lychili Martini gave it all a great deal of balance. We were honestly spoiled with a huge variety of amazing dishes. We started with the house Crab Cakes with cocktail sauce, and Wasabi Prawn Tempura. A Special Combo of Sushi, Sashimi, and California Maki was up next and we LOVED it – so fresh and flavourful, just unbelievably yum! The Seared Scallops was perfectly cooked and we liked the creamy and tangy sauce. We just had to try some Indian and Thai dishes to believe that all the different cuisines at Teatro were equally masterful. So, the chef chose to give us a taste of the 92

Thai Green Chicken Curry with Jasmine Rice, and that was packed with authentic Thai flavours – one of the best we’ve tasted in Bahrain. The Chicken Tikka cooked in the Tandoor oven was extremely moist and tasty without the overdose of spices, and the Naan Bread was the perfect companion. And the last of the main course dishes was a speciality noodles called Buddha’s Delight with prawns, mussels, scallops, and calamari – what a festival of ingredinets, it was utterly perfect! The star of this gastronomic extravaganza was the ginormous plate of sweet creations

that combined almost every treat on Teatro’s dessert menu. Fresh fruits, chocolate lollipops, a brilliant Lemon Grass Creme Brulée, and coconut ice-cream, with much more. But the best of all was the exquisite fried Banana Rolls. If you’re looking for the ideal venue that offers all kinds of mouthwatering Asian cuisines, take our advice and visit Teatro you won’t regret it! ✤ GO: Visit Teatro at Downtown Rotana. cafe

Forget hammertime, there’s a restaurant player in town that’s causing a shockwave with foodies and lounge-lovers all over Bahrain. FACT checks out the sprawling Ammar Time Café in Adliya and, to our surprise, there’s more to this place than meets thefacteye… magazine 95

local hotspot

W

e enter Ammar Time Café and our first words are “it’s huge” – the venue itself is spread over two floors and an outdoor garden area with private booth-style seating. Inside, there’s a restaurant area with a more traditional set up of where you’d sit to eat, and then there’s a number of different lounge areas with comfy sofas and chairs to sink into. Big screens are dotted around and we’re told that when any prominent sporting events are on, the place is lively with supporters and enthusiasts who gather for the hearty food, great shisha and the viewing – it’s a one-stop shop and we love that element it carries of bringing people together for a good time. One thing noticeably catches our attention; there’s art everywhere. On the walls and on canvases around the venue, everywhere you look a vibrant or moody creation stares back. Ammar himself tells us that when guests come to the café, they can get all the tools, paints and a canvas to create absolutely anything – the painting will then be auctioned off with the others at a later date and all the proceeds will go to helping a local charity or a specific case where someone is in need of a donation for medical purposes, for example. The warmth we get from this fun, humanitarian gesture makes us love this place even more. So as we wait for our food to arrive, Ammar brings out a blank canvas and a ton of paints. It’s our turn to get creative. Even though we’re super nervous, the key here is zero pressure – just let go and paint. Ammar’s encouraging words helped us to produce a painting that he said could fetch in no less than BD300 – wow! We’re feeling happier after this spontaneous burst of imagination and it’s all for a brilliant cause – what more could you want? Now, let’s talk food. Firstly, portions are super generous and perfect for sharing. Standouts included the juicy Shrimp Tempura, the Crispy Chicken Fingers and the Mozzarella Cheese Sticks. The delicious shrimp is sourced locally and you could tell – there was definitely more shrimp than batter – unlike many other tempura we’ve tried. A fantastic start! For mains, the Steak and Traditional Burger were both impressive, but it’s the dish that isn’t on the menu that blew us away. 96

A Wellness

Haven

When the Gulf Hotel Bahrain opened its spa last year, our inner Goddess of bliss was doing the happy dance. A few weeks ago, we finally got to tick it off our to-do list and, be prepared, it was the epitome of pure pampering…

F

or its Adliya location, The Gulf Spa both looks and feels like a tranquil space. There might be traffic on the roads outside, but inside this sprawling spa, it’s all about having a serene oasis experience. We’re greeted by friendly staff and moments after, we’re ushered to the changing area. First impression – O.M.G IT’S BIG. Unlike other spas we’ve visited around the country where changing areas are beautiful but cramped if it’s a busy day for the place, here you’ll find plenty of space to roam, lots of lockers, dedicated vanity areas with a mirror and all the usual grooming tools that a lady could want, plus a number of private changing rooms too. It seems that just like the rest of this meandering venue, the same attention to detail has gone into making the changing area as comfortable and practical as possible – something we really appreciated. Today’s treatment was going to be the 90-minute Precious Gemstone Massage. It’s in the pretty treatment room that I fill in a consultation card and hand back to the lovely therapist. It’s on this card that I’ve circled upper back and lower legs as main areas of concentration (blame it on a combo of the gym and sitting upright in front of a screen all day long). What makes this treatment special? Well, for one, you get to select your oil from four options; each luxurious oil is infused with a different healing gemstone – Sapphire, Diamond, Emerald or Ruby. I settle for the Calming Sapphire, after all, it’s known as the wisdom stone for its ability to help release mental tension and confusion. The stone quiets the mind and eases anxiety – and with deadlines looming like a dark grey cloud – inner clarity and stillness is what I absolutely needed. The massage itself is designed to promote tranquillity and healing through the use of these gem-infused oils combined with flower and herbal essences. My therapist was one of the best I’d ever encountered in Bahrain. She listened and advised and once the massage started, her palm-pressure and intricate technique made me quickly sink into the huge, cushy massage bed and I was soon catching zzzz’s in a deep state of relaxation. An hour and a half later and I just didn’t want to get up. My entire being had gone from go-go-go to balance and calm. I was then taken to the stunning relaxation lounge and given warm tea to end this incredible and rejuvenating experience. Aside from expert massages, The Gulf Spa also offers everything from cutting edge scientific skincare technology to Arabic healing therapies and luxury organic treatments that will pamper you head-totoe. It’s the perfect blend of science, nature, and all things indulgent – here, your spirit will be restored and ready to tackle every traffic light stop on the way home. ✤ GO: Visit The Gulf Spa at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. PEP TALK

Deal With Bad Fitness Advice

Why Bahrain loves F1

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

GEORGINA JENNSEN is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. A SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER WHO loves all things luxurious.

Recently one of my clients told me that a friend of hers was told by her doctor that as she is overweight she should go on a vegan diet and not do ANY exercise as she is too fat! (Yes, I rolled my eyes). Now this lady is 75kg and for her height this makes her about 15kg overweight, but this no way means that she shouldn’t do any exercise. It makes me angry when I hear rubbish like this. I really can’t understand why some people give out such unwise advice. When someone makes the decision to change their lifestyle, it’s a very important process to seek out the opinion and advice of people who should be able to help and guide you. Unfortunately in the health and fitness industry there is information overload and a lot that information is bad advice. Someone with no fitness knowledge at all can be viewed as vulnerable and become distracted by all the information coming their way telling you what to do. However, here are a lot of great people out there who do know what they’re talking about. But it’s very important to listen to one voice at a time. If you feel this is not the right fit for you or you don’t like what you hear, don’t be afraid to move on and not waste your time and money. Remember different things work for different people - it’s not one size fits all, find the right fit for you. ✤

Get your motor running peeps, the Formula One is heading our way - fast! The weekend of April 14-16 will see the testosterone-fueled teams battling it out in Bahrain for the 13th year, in the 3rd race of the season. And although I’m not a huge F1 fan as such, you can’t help but admire the beauty of the BIC track, the daring of the drivers, and of course the hotness of Hamilton. F1 is also pretty amazing for a few other reasons. For example, the cars can reach eye-watering speeds of 375kms. Drivers have been known to lose up to 5kgs of sweat after hurtling around the track for 2 hours and are potentially subjected to g-forces up to level 8, putting immense pressure on the drivers’ necks. But for Bahrain, the F1 is fabulous for reasons other than these. It’s our chance to welcome race-car lovers from all around the world. The island’s hotels and restaurants are full to bursting with foreign guests, giving the local economy a real lift. And it puts Bahrain exactly where it should be - both on the sporting map, and in the hearts of everyone who’s lucky enough to experience it. ✤

Is everyone all pumped up for F1 season? I certainly am! Delectable food, a vibrant culture scene and glamorous shopping sprees aside, Bahrain is most famous for its Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix and rightly so. This will be the 13th running of the race down at BIC and after years of just hearing about this epic event, I finally get to see what all the hype is about - excited is an understatement! What makes Formula One the biggest event of the year is the fact that it combines the Kingdom’s love of food, music and cars into one big incredible event that you just can’t afford to miss. Apart from this thrill-packed event, I’m really looking forward to more events for the Spring of Culture festival that features dance and musical performances, film festivals, street theatre and lots more! The event goes on to highlight everything I love about Bahrain, its ability to absorb every culture and belief while making it its own and sharing it with the world in its own beautiful way.
