Unleash The Artist Within...

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. - Neale Donald Walsch

W

hen I first moved to the Gulf, a friend gifted me with a phone case that had the exact quote above boldly written on the back. So, every time I picked up my phone, it was a reminder that leaving my comfort zone of small-town life in the northwest of England was a move that catapulted me towards more chances for learning, growing, and being creative in my career and experiences. I've been able to do things I had only dreamed of and THIS, is the exact reason why I love Bahrain. It’s the country of opportunity and encouragement. With so many cool, creative initiatives to get both local and expat communities involved, Bahrain is a nurturing place for talented individuals who want to get out there are pursue their passion. Arts is definitely an area that Bahrain invests a lot of time, effort and resources in, so we're absolutely ecstatic to give you the country's very first street art innovators - the Dirty Hands Crew. Taking over our April issue, they're bringing positivity and colour to our pages, and you can get up close and personal with the fab five on p33. This group of street artists is paving the way for future generations who want to leave their comfort zones and follow their artistic dreams - not to mention that their work is some of the coolest we've ever seen in Bahrain. If you pick up FACT for your monthly fix of food, fashion, tech and dining, you won’t be dissapointed. Check out our Culinary Spotlight at Meisei (p81); the Fashion Focus on American Eagle Outfitters (p69); a look at the trendiest pair of headphones on the market right now (p67) and, of course, our Foodie Corner at the island favourite JJ's Irish Restaurant (p85) and an Indian Indulgence at Mewar on p89. There’s something for everyone! I hope you all had a chance to pull your favourite (and funniest) April Fools’ jokes. Remember, 2018 could very well be your year of creative change! In the words of my favourite Mean Girls’ quote: “The limit does not exist.”☺

rom painted murals in 1950’s Latin America to the subways of 1960’s New York, and Paris’ Blek le Rat using stencil art for political messages in the 80s, street art has been around long before city-wide festivals were being held to celebrate this style of creative discourse. In fact, it’s only within the last two decades that street art has gone legal – in a majority of places, at least. As an artistic discipline, street art has evolved into a form of beautiful expression. Graffiti, stencils, prints and murals, large-scale paintings and projects of artistic collaboration, to street installations, as well as performance and video art, it’s clear as day that street art has worked its way into the core of the contemporary art world. And, it’s finally getting the attention and recognition that is so deserves. For those who may need a little recap on what constitutes as “street art” – here’s a fast refresher: street art is visual art created in public spaces, usually outdoors and usually unsanctioned artwork, that is executed beyond the context of traditional art venues. Now, in 2018, there seems to be a shift. Street art has taken on a life of its own – it’s 34

fact magazine

trendy, instagrammable and, often, pure genius. The tables have indeed turned and many places around the world are now commissioning, or at the very least encouraging, street artists to fill the sides of desolate buildings, walkways, and neighbourhood walls with a vibrant image. And, though it may not be some cool, concrete highrise in a gritty part of Vienna or an artsy district in Colorado, this island that we all call home is packing its own adventurous facades that now act as a canvas for anyone who’s gifted with a spray can. Even the famous eLSeed has covered the curving walls around Bahrain Bay in his signature graffiti. Being huge supporters of local talent, and individuals and groups who are out here representing a new wave of creativity, there was excitement in the air when we came across the Dirty Hands Crew (DHC). A strong unit of five friends and street artists, the crew is the first-of-its-kind in Bahrain and is openly sharing their love of creating big-scale, wow-worthy work with the public. The members of DHC are: Mustafa Halwachi (El Khal), Sarah Ridha (Monkey Grip), Arnaud (Pure *ork), Kojak (The Lazy Panda), and Marylou (The Deadly Chick). Together, their styles combine everything from realistic potraits and Arabic calligraphy to street graffiti and cartoon characters. They are as diverse as they are passionate, which no doubt makes for a very exciting experience every time the crew gets to work on a project. “Street art is the cave drawings of our age,” Mustafa says. “It is a pure and bold art form that puts the artist to the real test - mentally and physically. It is very liberating to work on such a large format. It changes everything,” he continues. “Soon the little details don’t matter much when viewed from a certain distance. It’s about the big picture, all pun intended!” Often a challenge for the artist and a total pleasure for the viewer, we’re intrigued to find out what the DHC are hoping to achieve with their murals. “We are the very first street art collective on the island and we are honoured that our work has been well received and applauded,” Mustafa tells us. “Bahrain does not lack creative people, and I hope that we will inspire the next generation of street artists and for those already in the field to start appreciating the street art movement and even start their own wall art initiative,” he adds. “I hope people start seeing what street art is really all about and its ability to promote positivity and change. Or at the very least, take that fabulous selfie with friends and create an ever-lasting memory with our artwork in the background.” fact magazine

35

Speaking of positivity, we must address the elephant in the room. It’s no hidden secret, but with street art also being used to depict messages and agendas for social and political reasons, there are still many that view its different forms in a negative way. Take graffiti for example, throughout history its association with disenfranchised youth or stigma of links to criminal activity makes it harder for some generations to encourage and accept it on their streets. What is the crew’s opinion on those who still view “street art” as an undesirable form of expression? Mustafa explains: “Graffiti and street art has been given a bad rep, and been stigmatised as the work of hoodlums and good for nothing lost young folk. To some extent that is true - I am absolutely against vandalism and destruction of personal property. “That being said, it is only a very small percentage. Most artists that work in the public domain are geniuses when it comes to choosing their spots, and creating a dialogue of visual rhythm,” Mustafa says. “In most countries now, especially parts of Europe, they have realised the importance of bringing life to a dead and bleak environment. So, they’ve assigned "free walls" for artists to come and paint as they please. “As an artist working out in the street and being a part of this amazing crew, THAT is exactly what we are after. We promote beauty, creativity, togetherness and the love for our diverse community through our work. The work speaks for itself and the energy attracts the positivity,” he adds. Now, let’s take it back to the beginning, how did the DHC come to be and where did that all-too-catchy name come from? It turns out that this group of passionate individuals were already friends and artists in their own rights. They did solo projects and always talked about how awesome it would be to work together on some collaborative projects, all the while carrying a mutual respect and admiration for each others’ talents. “I do believe it is all about timing,” Mustafa recalls. “A big project came along that could accommodate the five of us and we had the chance to blend our different styles together. It was a 120-metre 36

fact magazine

long hoarding of a construction site that we were commissioned to paint. “We started the project and the buzz soon grew and since it was on a main street the work got noticed quite quickly by the media,” he smiles. “One day we were talking and saying how we are amazing as a crew working together and supporting each other. And the idea just exploded that we started thinking of names right away. I read a proverb that said, "dirty hands is a sign of clean money", which reflected us quite naturally as our hands were always dirty." And so, the Dirty Hands Crew came to be. If we had to choose a group of cultural ambassadors or community role models to take note of, this would be the crew that makes the cut. What’s their advice for young, budding street artists or anyone who needs encouragement to step out of their comfort zone? “Practice, practice, practice,” Mustafa says. “Invest in your talent with effort, time and money. Sponsor yourself and create your first wall. And don’t stop there, keep pushing, “Visit art spaces and join the community, help existing artists for free, so you can learn those techniques you will need later to do great things. Also, listen and observe more than you speak, sketch everyday, embrace criticism – actually, seek it,” he advises. “And remember everyone doubts themselves at some point, I know I still do. That wouldn’t stop me from going out there and busting a huge wall!” Hot off their success creating their first street art pavilion for none other than ArtBab 2018, a 30-metre wall inside the art exhibition, the Dirty Hands Crew’s main goal for 2018 is to keep pushing the street art movement, and a dream for a more colourful Bahrain. They also hope to gain the financial support of private entities that can help them to achieve this vision. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from getting to know more about these cool creators, it’s this: the crew that sprays together, stays together, and we're sure that they will succeed together too. ✤

Q. What’s the most challenging aspect of being a street art crew in Bahrain – and how do you overcome these? A: Time management is one of the most challenging aspects of working as a crew. It is hard for all of us to arrange our schedules to work at the same time, because of job and family commitments. We do the best we can. BLACK BOOK A graffiti artist’s sketchbook – doesn’t have to be black. Often used to sketch out and plan potential graffiti, and to collect tags from other writers.

PIECE Short for “masterpiece.” A large and labour-intensive graffiti painting, usually with at least three colours.

WILDSTYLE It’s all about interlocking letters and elaborate symbols, almost threedimensional type. Basically, it’s graffiti with text so stylised, only experts or practitioners can read the name.

TAG A stylised name or signature, usually done in one colour with various materials, such as a marker or an aerosol spray can,

46

fact magazine

often freehand. A tag is often done in a colour that contrasts the background; a person who tags is known as a writer or bomber and they will tag on or beside their pieces – like a sign on the artwork.

STRAIGHT LETTERS Pretty much the opposite of wildstyle, this is a direct, blocky, more readable and simpler style of graffiti, often with only two colours, and can be read by anyone.

INSTALLATION Can be temporary or permanent work, usually commissioned, which means the piece is sitespecific, and often 3D or sculptural. An installation can combine various techniques, some could have political agendas, be part of a big event and

usually include something innovative for the people to see.

CHARACTER When graffiti brings to life an animated, cartoonish, cute or creepy character that serves as a signature or visual shorthand. Many artists invent a wholly new being that can be out up on its own or as part of a bigger narrative.

GETTING UP To paint and build up a reputation. When other writers see your work in multiple locations, you’re “getting up”.

STENCIL A phrase, image or both, designed and cut into heavy paper or cardboard, then spray-painted onto a wall. Stencils can be one-offs or can be used repeatedly to make the work of one artist

or writer recognisable.

MURAL A huge piece, usually on a legal wall. It could be done by one graffiti writer, a group or a whole crew, and it could depict one single scene or be part of a series of connected images.

LEGAL WALL Places where graffiti writers can legally put up pieces. This can be on houses, office blocks, apartment buildings etc. Legal walls have helped bring about the transformation of graffiti into public art.

ROLLER A work done with a roller brush. The brush’s long handle enables artists to paint in hard-to-reach or tricky spots. Most rollers consist of block-letter tags or phrases, sometimes with drop shadows or intentional drips.

This is exactly how we felt on our way to the towering JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai. Not only will we reside in the chilled-out Business Bay neighbourhood on Sheikh Zayed Road, there’s SO much at the property that unless you’re in the city for pure tourist hotspots, there’s absolutely no reason

why you need to leave the hotel until it’s check out time. The UAE is already renowned for its warm hospitality and this is no exception here. We step into a busy lobby area where check-in desks are crowded. However, looking around, the staff are super efficient with allowing guests to make use of the Marriott Rewards priority check-in desk too. This simple gesture is allthe-more reason for us to sign up to the loyalty programme, not to mention the lovely welcome drinks and cold towel presented on arrival. WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT •

This feeling runs right into the breathtaking Executive Suite that we’ll call home for a weekend. And as far as suites go, this is one special set-up. WHERE do we begin? Think snug meets fresh, meets minimalism with a dash of artistic flair. The living area is bigger than most actual rooms in high-rise apartments; it’s decked out with a lovely siting area and a HUGE round dining table which is completely ideal for ordering room service (which we absolutely did!). There extensive mini-bar area is one of the longest counter tops we’ve ever seen in any suite; it’s kitted out with plenty of bottled water, complimentary tea, coffee and nespresso making facilities and a mini-bar with all your usual drinks and snacks. The clever use of a privacy wall to separate the living and bedroom areas is great, especially as the flat screen TV slots in nicely on the living room side with a fully-equipped entertainment hub including DVD player and a crystal-clear sound system. There’s an iPod dock whilst the TV features premium film channels and both international satellite and cable programming – see, no need to leave! Walking into the gorgeous bedroom with floor-toceiling windows, boasting picture-perfect views of the Burj Khalifa, the king-size bed is UNREAL and we go on to make the most of its comfort by taking power naps, siestas and having lie-ins throughout the stay. The walk-in closet is an absolute treat – we wish there was one just like it waiting at home! That’s not even the best bit. Two words: BATHROOM GOALS. You have never seen a more perfect bathtub, double vanity, spacious shower and views for miles than in this bathroom. It’s bigger than most bedrooms we’ve stayed in and carries an airy atmosphere with neutral décor. If there’s one thing you need to do here, it’s taking the longest soak in the deep, oversized tub – we would have happily slept in it! It’s the practical, space and light-filled layout that we loved most about this suite – everything from the number of plug sockets to discreet yet visible amenity boxes was all very well thought out. Bravo for attention to detail. Adding onto that is the luxury of Executive Lounge access where you’re served breakfast, midday snacks, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks and late night snacks - all complimentary. Winner!

Kitchen6, the French eatery La Farine, Rang Mahal by Atul Kochhar for Indian food lovers, Tong Thai serving up exquisite Thai cuisine, Positano for an Italian culinary fix and the Garden with South American delicacie as well as Izakaya Japaznese restaurant. There’s a number of great bars and lounges for a more casual atmosphere too. GIRL’S DAY OUT

Next, you won’t be overwhelmed by the menu as the staff are greatly knowledgeable on the different cuts of meat and what sides and sauces would go well together. Prime68’s premium suppliers have been carefully selected for their artisan produce, cultivated with passion and consideration for the environment, featuring the finest heritage breed beef from farms around the globe. We go for the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Organic Baby Beets and Artisan Feta Salad, and the Wagyu Meat Balls for starters. The latter blows our taste buds away – covered in lip-licking Parmesan cream, it’s a must. For mains, it had to be the 250g Jack’s Creek Wagyu Tenderloin - grain fed for a minimum of 120 days and highly coveted because it produces a higher fat content with better marbling. We also opt for the Josper Grilled Line Caught Filet of Sea Bass, whilst our sides consist of Mac and Cheese, Sweet Potato Fries and Grilled Asparagus (there’s no such thing as too many sides!). Let us take a moment to reminisce the steak, which is cooked on-point to our preference of medium. It’s tender and tasty, and we take our time devouring this bad boy – HIGHLY recommended. As far as steakhouse experiences go, Prime68 is a fine contender for a spot in our top three in the UAE! Aside from Prime68, the hotel also offers an expansive international restaurant called

If you’re staying at the hotel with a bestie, your mum, sister or any special lady who loves a bit of pampering followed by a delicious afternoon tea – this spa plus foodie deal is what you need to book during your stay. Choose a 30-minute treatment from the options – we went for the back, neck and shoulder massage – which is followed by a 15-minute foot massage. Arrive early at the peaceful Saray Spa and make use of the awesome facilities: sauna, steam room, ice fountain, Jacuzzi hot tub and relaxation area. What we loved about the spa is that everything from the dim-lit décor to the serene music and sensual scents make you forget that you’re in the heart of a bustling city – isn’t that what spa days are about – total escapism? This is followed by the most filling high tea at La Farine Café & Bakery, a gorgeous venue on the ground floor where you’ll be served unlimited hot beverages of your choice alongside a menu of delectable sandwiches and sweet delights – all prepared with the utmost creativity and flavours. Take your phone because this food journey is totally insta-worthy. Oh, and let’s not forget that when your tummies are full and you’re ready for a relaxing afternoon. Head to the breathtaking pool area where it’s sun loungers galore and a pool that we just LOVED dipping in and out of. It was hard to pack up and leave a place that very quickly felt like home and where we’d gotten used to seeing the same faces and exchanging greetings in the corridors. For the sheer amount of things to do and experience within its perfectly decorated walls and for the beyond amazing hospitality, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai should be right at the TOP of your next staycation choices. THE ALL-NEW 2018 TOYOTA CAMRY

fact magazine

59

• ISLAND RIDES

Toyota have delivered a completely new take on and old favourite.

T

he Toyota Camry has enjoyed great success in Bahrain and across the globe with a total of over 19-million units sold. First released in 1982, this make of vehicle is respected for its quality, durability and reliability. Now in its eighth generation and still going strong, it has unwaveringly established itself in the mid-sized sedan market. When we at fact magazine were offered the opportunity to see how Toyota decided to improve on their popular offering, we were most intrigued to experience what the designers had come up with. As our test vehicle came into view, we were immediately impressed by the Graphite colour. We were informed that the car is available in no less than ten distinctive exterior colours and four colour scheme options for the interior, which allows for one to express their individuality when purchasing this popular car. The shape and lines of the vehicle ensured a far sportier and sculpted shape than its predecessors and the overall presence was most

60

fact magazine

pleasing on the eye. Another distinctive change to the exterior is the inclusion of 17-inch alloy wheels that add to the bold new design. Slipping inside the spacious cabin, comfort immediately greeted us along with a sense of luxury and convenience. A range of new innovative features were instantly apparent including the 8-inch information display that we found to be very user friendly and efficient. A wireless charging system for smartphones was extremely useful as we did not have to scratch around for a charger or take eyes off the road to plug it in. The dual-zone automatic air condition system ensured a perfect driving climate at all times whilst the high quality six-speaker sound system coupled with our favourite road anthem mix, helped to provide the perfect soundtrack for the journey. The multi-adjustable power front seats as well as the reclining rear seats were both well designed, enabling us to relax and to focus on the road. As we pulled out onto the tarmac, we could feel the very capable 2.5-litre, four cylinder engine telling us that we had what was needed under the hood to really enjoy this experience. Producing 178 hp and boasting a six-speed automatic transmission, this all-new Toyota proved extremely fun to drive.

• ISLAND RIDES

“NOW IN ITS EIGHTH GENERATION AND STILL GOING STRONG, THE ALL-NEW TOYOTA CAMRY HAS UNWAVERINGLY ESTABLISHED ITSELF IN THE MID-SIZED SEDAN MARKET.”

Later we would be told that there is a SE grade version available for purchase that has a newly developed 3.5-litre V6 engine with a D-4S injection system that produces 298 hp coupled with an eightspeed automatic transmission. A new electrified hybrid system will also be introduced in May 2018 that combines two power sources consisting of a petrol engine and two electric motors that produces 176 hp and 118 hp, respectively. It is also combined with an Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT) that simulates a six-speed sequential shift transmission. Our vehicle however proved to be endless fun due to its responsive nature, great handling ability and a decent turn of speed. Yet another great feature of this car is its class-leading fuel efficiency. The designers have not forgotten about safety and have included a host of features to ensure the protection of both the driver and the passengers. These include six SRS airbags, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EDB), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). One can take great comfort in the fact that Toyota have approached the well-being of the car’s occupants as their top priority. All-in-all we were very impressed by the latest Camry’s design and performance capabilities. Although this vehicle is not a Maserati or a Porsche, it certainly ticks many of the right boxes when looking for a proficient vehicle. We found it to be a good looking, well-balanced machine that offered cutting-edge technology, abundant safety features, a pleasurable driving performance and an overall exciting experience. Why not take a test drive of your own and find out for yourself first hand. ✤

MASERATI: TRIPLE THREAT

AL HADDAD AWARDED

Maserati unveiled the Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante in captivating “total black” at the 88th Geneva Motor Show. Black is synonymous with elegance, but also with extreme sportiness, so it perfectly captures the dual personality inherent in the Maserati DNA. From this concept, Nerissimo was born − a special edition of Maserati cars that emphasises their assertive sporting prowess and high-performance capabilities. Designed for the Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante − and available in GranSport trims − the Nerissimo Edition envelops each car in black. The exteriors of the three cars stand out thanks to seductive, deep black body paint. This is combined with a contrasting Black Chrome trim on the upper part of the grille frame and the Trident, the side air vents, the boot, and the iconic Maserati badging on the C-pillars and at the rear. The grille bars, door handles, exhaust tips and window trim, meanwhile, are in an exclusive black finish. ✤

t’s amazing to track the revolution of the headphone. Long before tech moguls like Steve Jobs created the white earbuds and Dr. Dre took over with his Beats, the humble headphone’s ancestors were used by everyone from 1881 telephone operators to 1910 US-navy issued devices, the widely popular AKG K120’s hit the market in 1949, and a decade later, the world’s first ever electrostatic pair of headphones by Stax debuted in Tokyo. Not to mention, the biggest drop in headphone history came with the Sony Walkman in the late 1970s – followed by progressive designs like Bose in 2000, earbuds to accompany the iPod in 2001, all the way through to the 00s with Beats by Dre and now with sophisticated tech advances and style revivals. Fast-forward to 2018 and you’ve got the H9i. Now, let’s be honest, not everyone is into your kind of music in the office and when you’re blasting your favourite tunes into the ear canals, you don’t want a screaming baby on the plane or the sound of traffic horns on the road to disrupt your listening time – this is where the H9i excels. Proving to be a supreme listening experience, the wireless Beoplay H9i has improved ANC; the hybrid Active Noise Cancellation performs even better between 300-800Hz, meaning that the cancellation of human voices and surrounding sounds is more effective than ever before. The sound quality is enhanced too with the introduction of a bass port that ensures optimal and more powerful bass. That means, more good music, and less distractions! Perhaps our most favourite feature, and one that every headphone junkie will appreciate is the Proximity Sensor. Imagine, you’re at your desk, walking along the street or even at the gym, enjoying

a great song or interesting podcast and you need to remove your headphones for a few minutes to make a call or to have a quick convo with someone - this smart feature will automatically pause your music or video streaming when you remove the headphones. When you put the headphones back on, the music or video starts playing again from where you left it - pretty impressive. Due to a more optimal circuit design, the Beoplay H9i achieves better performance with up to 18 hours - four hours extra playtime from Beoplay H9. On top of this, there’s an additional microphone dedicated to improving voice quality. However, what makes the H9i truly special is its modern, urban design with a slight retro twist. Beoplay H9i comes with an even slimmer ear cushion design, reshaped anodized mono arm and enlarged aluminium discs with mesmerising touch control to give the headphones an even more elegant appearance. Moreover, the ANC microphone grill on the housing has been upgraded for a cleaner design expression, and the battery removal solution is more secure with the removal of the aluminium disc from the left ear cup. In another century when the future generation looks at the history of headphones from the 00s – you can bet that the H9i will be amongst that audio conversation. ✤

GO: BEOPLAY H9I IS NOW AVAILABLE IN BANG & OLUFSEN STORES, ON WWW.BEOPLAY.COM/H9I AND AT HARVEY NICHOLS. PRICES START AT BD210. INCLUDED WITH THE HEADPHONES IS A COTTON CARRYING BAG, A 1.25M USB-C CHARGING CABLE AND AN AUDIO CABLE. fact magazine

Innovative Asian Flavours

A splendid display of culinary artistry, dining at Meisei is always a multi-sensorial experience. Deeply rooted in the Wabi-sabi Asian aesthetic centered on the appreciation and acceptance of transience, Meisei has always been our go-to for delicious fusion food in a vibrant setting. S

howcasing a delectable blend of cultures through food, Meisei’s new seasonal menu combines the beautiful ingredients of Asia and Peru, taking intricate yet effortless flavours to a whole new level. Featuring specially-created dishes from the land and sea, the newest offerings present you with a never-seen-before interpretation of modern Japanese fusion food. As we sat down for an intense sesh of tasty eating, we were immediately greeted by some of the most helpful staff. A very special mention goes out to Jay who was incredibly knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive – and always had a smile! While being carefully informed about the workings of our menu for lunch, the first dish of Korean Seafood Pancake (Hameoul Pajeo) was brought out. A delightful medley of pan seared scallops, shrimps, calamari, mussels, spring onions and spicy sesame soy vinaigrette, the light and fluffy pancake is unlike anything we have ever had before. This savoury fix can replace the stodgy sweet pancake for us, any day! Another huge standout is the Japanese Curry Chicken Tiger Prawn Noodles which comes wrapped in a huge leaf packed with wok fried chicken, curried egg rice noodles, assorted vegetables and ancho chillies. We sense aromas that are reminiscent of walking past street food stalls in Asia and the amalgamation of these ingredients is, simply, divine. So much so that we gave this dish all of our attention until the last bit of noodle was savoured. Just perfect! Presented in the most authentic form, the new seasonal menu brings the exotic essences of Asia and Peru to Bahrain, and we can guarantee that no where else on the island is serving up food like Meisei. Our next dish of Matcha Fettuccini Shisho Leaf Pesto had our forks and cameras at the ready. Green tea noodles infused with perilla leaves and pine nuts – the dish is bursting with vibrant colour and fresh flavour. An absolute treat to our eyes and taste buds, we couldn’t get enough of this mouthwatering concoction which is actually a gorgeous choice for the health-conscious diners or anyone who 82

is vegetarian or vegan. Offering one of the world’s most tantalising cultural fusions, the menu exemplifies the ingredients and techniques of the South East Asian and Peruvian regions, beautifully. Taking our culinary journey up a notch, our next dish of Korean Crispy Chicken (Yangnyeom) is heaven on a plate. Crisp fried baby chicken with spicy Korean gojuchang and Japanese slaw, the chicken is done just right with pleasant hints of spiciness seeping through - a MUST TRY! Meat eaters will not be left disappointed, as the Spicy Serrano Beef Wild Mushroom Shisho Pesto Ravioli is our dish of the day. WOW! Not only is presentation stunning, the combination of matcha green tea ravioli stuffed with pulled spicy Serrano ginger beef, and wild mushrooms is a gift from the food Gods (in this case Chef Michael SangKyu Lee and his team) that we’ve all been waiting for.

Equally show-stopping is the tender and juicy Anticuchos Ribeye which consists of grilled black angus ribeye, Japanese Peruvian marinate and crispy garlic chips – we could eat it every day for the rest of our lives just for the zesty sauce. Featuring a mélange of new combinations and tastes, their seasonal menu is one of the most extensive in contemporary fusion fare on the island. We're secretly hoping that some of these dishes will stay beyond the season! From an impressive ambience and great hospitality to some of the most delicious food in Bahrain, Meisei has everything you need for a satisfying lunch or dinner. THIS is the place to expand and excite your taste buds with a true palate awakening. ✤

In the middle of the street our… JJ’s Irish Restaurant. Building an unparalleled reputation for quality - quality food, quality hops, quality service and, of course, quality entertainment is no mean feat but these guys have knocked it out the park, or rather Adliya. I

t all started with the building of JJ’s itself, back to July 1999 when The Spice Girls were doing their ‘thang’, well, we certainly have something that will ‘spice up your life’ … (see what we did there!?), and we aren’t merely referencing JJ’s selection of curries, no siree! With over 80 per cent of its contents being assembled in Ireland, shipped over and pieced back together, you get the level of authenticity this spot holds dear - regardless of the mammoth task in hand but we are sure you will agree it was worth every bit of effort. Great effort has also been placed into the selection of draught hops that they serve. We admonish you to sample a good variety, which have been cared for by their professionally trained staff and served at an ideal temperature. A cold draught always goes down well during the Bahrain summer heat or winter for that matter. Feeling hungry? Well, since the Irish have a saying for everything, remember this one, “Festa anocht agus gorta amarach” which means “a feast tonight and a famine tomorrow.” Whatever you choose, be their guest at JJ’s Irish Restaurant and have a feast. One of the quintessential parts to JJ’s continued success is their emphasis on atmosphere. As a traditional Irish venue they aim to entertain you in many different ways, be it watching your favourite sporting event, listening to great music from across the years or as the night birds will tell you, dancing the night away with their resident DJ’s, there’s one thing you’ll realise; there is no better place to spend your well-earned leisure time. Their menu has a fine choice of traditional Irish dishes complemented by the finest ingredients from across the globe perfect for that mixed night out when you cannot decide on a venue because there is too much input as to what cuisine people fancy. only place to have the authentic one. I for one truly enjoyed their fabulously battered Fish and Chips and their melt-inthe mouth Scotch Eggs. You can choose beef or you know what rhymes with fork - I chose both and I’m not even ashamed. My work colleagues saw a different side to me that day - I was quiet. I was too busy scoffing, or rather shoveling, the plentiful amounts of home-cooked food as if it was my last supper. My colleagues had settled on a selection of pastries that wouldn’t look out of place from your Granny’s kitchen, but alas, there is no pigeon pie being served here, rather a tasty helping of beef or chicken baked with buttery pastry, The whole table separated into a rather melodic song of “Mmms” and “Ahs” which is always a good sign. In the famous words of Arnie, “I’ll be back!” ✤

here’s a lot of competition in Bahrain when it comes to Indian food – so to really make a statement, you have to stand out; Mewar Restaurant does this perfectly. The venue, located at Galleria Mall in Zinj, is a two-storey, elegantly decorated space with ornaments and furnishings that are reminiscent of India; there’s intricately carved mandala-style work etched in the walls, gorgeous gold hanging lights, cushy seating and even cutlery, tableware, glassware and crockery that has been specially selected to bring the essence of Indian culture to life, completing a truly authentic dining experience. Named after one of India’s historic Kingdoms, Mewar Restaurant guarantees a variety of spices, herbs and ingredients that are infused into every single dish. There’s a robust offering of food that complements and highlights traditional masterpieces with modern touches – a genuine royal Indian cuisine experience is what guests will get here. Open for lunch and dinner, Mewar’s menu pays homage to the royal “Rajwada” dishes from the “Rajputana” region, along with well-known food that has derived its connotations from around the region through various influences acquired via princely exchanges amongst the royals that ruled the area. The idea is that, as soon as you enter Mewar, you’ll be greeted and treated like a king or queen, to a memorable dining experience. In our opinion – this is exactly what you get! Our waiter is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable on the menu which helps us to make tasty decisions when placing our order. And, to our pleasant surprise, they really go the extra mile to elevate your senses from start to finish. We begin with a selection of taster size lassi that comes with a side of crispy crackers and a smooth hummous dip. The four lassi options include: rose, date and honey, pistachio, and berry. Unusual, yet innovative and utterly brilliant; the lassis each pack subtle yet lingering flavours and we’re in awe of their creative combinations. Our culinary journey continues with the palate-pleasing Chaat Selections. Now, for anyone who loves a taste of good Indian street food, allow Mewar to bring a sophisticated version straight to the table. Our favourites included Kurkura Palak Chaat – deep fried crunchy spinach leaves topped with chaat mix and “special chutney” as well as the Kurkura Murgh Chaat made up of mouthwatering crunchy chicken juliennes with a chaat mix, and the best of all had to be the Rajwadi Dahi Balle – Jaipur style lentil dumplings in a tongue tickling yogurt with tamarind mix – SO. MUCH. FLAVOUR! The starter style dishes to snack are abundant and much like the diners around us, we just wanted to try it all! A good option for this is the Mixed Snack Platter, an amalgamation of two pieces of za'atari jheenga, two pieces of shaami kabab shikampur, a mini serving of guntur chilli chicken and two pieces of meat samosa. It was the Guntur Chilli Chicken that stole our foodie hearts (and our taste buds) with the perfect amount of spice, this dish was finished instantly!

For vegetarian diners, the Kesari Paneer Tikka is a fabulous choice; cottage cheese chunks in a saffron yogurt and cooked in the tandoor, sprinkled with pine nuts. Expect fluffy, flavourful cubes with a slightly charred exterior – so delicious. For mains, it’s love at first bite with Murgh Tikka Masala and Jheenga Biryani. The first is a classic blend of tandoor barbequed chicken tikkas simmered in a tomato sauce perfumed with fenugreek and lives up to all of our expectations. Whilst the latter comes in a beautiful round dish – almost like being served at home – and packs a punch with a variety of herbs and spices hitting our palates with every spoonful. We believe that any Indian restaurant that can do tikka masala and biryani well, has truly made its mark, Mewar passes the test with flying colours! Don’t forget to order a lovely helping of roti and naan bread – here they are served hot and fresh glazed in butter (just as we like them). The desserts at Mewar are another round of surprises. We’d highly recommend the Gulab Jamun Flan – gulab jamun neatly tucked under crème brulee (a stunning marriage of flavours and textures) and the Gajrela Roll which takes the very traditional Gajar Ka Halwa and wraps it in crispy fried rolls, served with a silky rabri and ice cream. Even the Rasmalai Chocolate Mousse is a dreamy combo of luscious ingredients. Indian food is not easy to execute right when you’re trying to do too much. Mewar Restaurant is proof that with a well-focussed concept, a dedicated team and a menu that stays true to its roots – you CAN create a dining experience that is fit for royalty, right here in Bahrain. ✤

Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

Creativity in The Air

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Georgina Jennsen is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. a social media influencer who loves all things luxurious.

You finally decided to take the leap and embark on getting into the best shape of your life. You’ve decided that enough is enough and that extra weight you’ve been carrying has got to go, you want to gain muscle, get rid of those love handles or get that hour glass figure; but there’s just one problem, you don’t want to change all the things that got you there in the first place. You joined a gym or got yourself a personal trainer. You only go to the gym twice a week and do a few classes and when you get home you go into the kitchen open a drawer and pull out a takeout menu. You keep doing this for months and then decide the gym is rubbish and not working for you as you haven’t seen any weight loss or change in your body. Those that got themselves a personal trainer work out with your trainer twice a week start to question why you haven’t seen any change even though your trainer has given you a programme of things to do on the days you don’t see them. You have chosen not to do these things; nor have you chosen to change to the meal plan they set out for you. It’s like that old saying “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink”. So, if you have the opportunity of people willing to help you change, take it. ✤

If there’s one thing I learnt from the last 6 years of blogging in Bahrain, it’s that this little island is full to bursting with creativity. I guess it’s in the desert DNA - the ability to find magic in the minimalist; beauty in the often-times bleak. If you need proof, just pop into Riyadat Mall in A’ali, tenanted by some of the most talented designers in town. Here you’ll find everything from locally-made jewellery to jalabiyas, t-shirts to totes. Head straight to the gorgeous ground floor Milk Concept Store to see exactly what I mean. Another one of my favourite creatives is Yalla Habibi - a simply divine home decor label that’s based upon collaborations between founder Natalie Yung with local and regional artists. Head over to @yallahabibi_bh to enjoy the most wonderfully-colourful cushions that are almost too lovely to sit on. I can never get enough of the joyful works by Egyptian-born artist Mohamed Sharkawy. Of course creativity comes in many forms, including those found at Sonder - a Sanad-based cafe that hosts poetry evenings, small acoustic gigs, and open mic nights. The works of local painters, photographers and illustrators are displayed upstairs, with a different artist being featured every month. And downstairs, not far from the freshlybaked brownies and delicious sambos, Sonder sells locallymade products such as t-shirts and prints. How very delicious! xx ✤

From its cross-cultural culinary palate to the gorgeous murals adorning the island’s walls, creativity in Bahrain can be seen and experienced in all walks of life. Understanding the importance of art in our everyday lives, the people of Bahrain add a little splash of innovation and creativity into everything they do. While the definition of creativity has always been a widely contested topic, there’s no denying Bahrain’s intrinsic artistic genius. The overlapping and coming together of numerous cultures and nationalities has created a vibrant mingling of creative talents. Home to one of the oldest cultural histories in the gulf region, the government’s consistent efforts at promoting artistic expression are one of the main reasons for its flourishing art scene. Be it the various government funded cultural events or the annual art festivals, there’s plenty in Bahrain to fuel your creative passion. An imperative part of the country’s artistic core, the unparalleled architecture, food, music and art make Bahrain what it is today. While the concept of creativity is constantly evolving and changing with the times, Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage will always manage to shine through. Creativity being a deeply individual notion, it will always mean something different to everyone. While some bring canvases to life through imagination and inventiveness, others might display it in the corporate realm. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to making art. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Mahmood Qannati Head of Marketing, Brand and Corporate Communication at BisB

Tell us three things that keep you excited about working in the banking sector with BisB? The work that I do here at a local bank will leave an immediate impact on the lives of my fellow citizens and will help promote the country inside out. Islamic Banking has a lot of hidden potential that needs to be brought out. Furthermore, BisB and its great leadership have a very clear and exciting strategy for the future of the bank and banking in general. I see the successful implementation of fintech every day at BisB. It feels great to be

part of such a bold move and lead its voice to the public. I have worked for international brand names all my life. However, I chose a local name like BisB because it has the ingredients for something big which is the ultimate dream for any marketeer. The flexibility, agility, speed to market and bravery of explorations are things that keep me going. What are your favourite cultural and dining hotspots in Bahrain and why? I am a family man and spend a lot of time around my family. However, I

enjoy walking down the tiny aisles of Manama souq every now and then. It reminds me of how simple life can be if we choose it to be. Share with us some of your goals with BisB for the rest of 2018... To create a think-tank of a team and centre of excellence for marketing and communication effectiveness and efficiency; there is limitless hard work behind the scenes to differentiate this bank by its people. All this will be translated and packaged into a bold brand promise which will be meaningful to you and us.
