THE EDITOR
Retail Therapy “Because I bought it on sale, I actually made money.” – Anon
“
I have too many clothes and shoes,” said no woman ever. If you also felt like Confessions of a Shopaholic was more than just a film, but in fact the story of your life, then this issue is going to be right up your closet! Why? Because, guys and girls, we’ve rounded up the best malls and off-the-wall stores to unleash your inner summer shopaholic. Turn to p23 for Shopping 101 and let the list of musthaves begin. Hopefully, you’ve just had pay day come around and it’s time for a treat! It’s not news that August is a bit of a dead month in the GCC as temperatures soar above imagination and it’s just too hot to do anything fun during the day. It’s also the school holidays; so many local and expat families will be on their summer vacation, leaving Bahrain to bask in a calmer atmosphere. Personally, this time of the year can be delightful. I love the emptier malls, the quieter roads and the summer soirees – you can be both active and lazy at your own pace! When all’s said and done, we’ve come to realise that, even in heat, the one thing you can always rely on in Bahrain, is food. And, surprisingly, August brings with it a slew of awesome dining options. We check out the brand new Arabic restaurant Reem Al Bawadi at Ramada Manama City Centre (p81); the lavish lunch buffet at Lanterns Restaurant in Riffa (p85); and some of the different themed nights at The Domain Hotel & Spa. Plus, you’ll find what’s happening at various venues throughout the magazine. In other words, when it's too hot and all else fails, find a nice place to eat. One of my favourite stories in this issue begins on p47. I caught up with the creators of Wayl, a new comic book with an Arab superhero who makes it his mission to save the city he grew up in from crime and corruption. It’s a story that is so relevant now more than ever before and I’m sure you’re going to love reading about the creative process behind the project. Now, put down the Pokemon Go and remember to work hard so you can shop harder. ☺ Shabana Adam, Editor-in-Chief shabana@fact-magazine.com 4

Best of Bushido August is set to be a food-filled month at Bushido Restaurant & Lounge. Here’s what to expect…
Izakaya Sundays Izakaya is a type of informal Japanese food gathering. Food items are served in small portions, similar to Spanish Tapas. Izakaya dining includes a wide variety of Bushido’s signature dishes. Food is normally ordered slowly over several courses rather than all at once. Guests can re-order dishes as much as they like. Dishes on the menu include Bushido’s famous volcano roll, the scrumptious rock shrimp tempura and the mouth-watering beef tenderloin with teriyaki sauce. Limitless Signature Dishes for BD14.5++, from 7pm to 11.30pm.
SmartMenu Fine dining within your lunch-hour can be tricky, which is why Bushido has developed Smart Menu. All three courses are designed to be served within 30 minutes from the moment you order. Dishes on the menu are changed on a regular basis to ensure you never tire of the same choices. In the impressive surroundings of Bushido Restaurant, business lunches have never been smarter! From Sunday to Thursday lunchtime, for BD10 net.
The Teppanyaki Experience The best way to answer “What is Teppanyaki?” is to experience it for yourself! This interactive meal is fun for couples, large groups, and special celebrations like birthdays. In Japanese, teppan means an iron plate or a steel sheet, and yaki, stir-fried food or stir-frying. A large teppan, including the surrounding counter from which diners eat, can seat as many as 24 guests, allowing just enough elbowroom for diners to sit comfortably while the chef prepares their meal on the grill in front of them. Teppanyaki chefs have ample opportunity to demonstrate their skill. The flashing tools of their trade are a knife, a fork, and two metal spatulas. In spectacular displays of dexterity, chefs cut, stir, season, and divide each diner’s portion onto plates on the teppan. As the food is prepared on the same surface that keeps it warm, meals are served as soon as they are ready. Teppanyaki has to be eaten leisurely. Watching the chef prepare teppanyaki is an important part of the meal. The diners’ plates rest on the hot teppan, assuring their food will not get cold. Available daily for lunch and dinner. ✤ GO: Call 1758 3555 or email reservations@bushido.com.bh for more information.

Maki Restaurant Favourites If you happened to co-own one of the most coveted contemporary Japanese restaurants in the Middle East, how many nights a week would you dine there? Amer Zeitoun answers that question with gleaming eyes: “I literally dine at Maki every single night, unless I am invited somewhere else by a friend. Nevertheless, I have even had friends invite me to my own restaurant.” Founded by Amer and his brother Oliver, Maki restaurant first opened its doors in Kuwait in 2002 to scores of guests who lined up outside the 35-seater which offered a take on contemporary Japanese cuisine, never seen before in the Middle East. From house-grown extra virgin olive oil, to balsamic vinegar, to Moroccan truffles, to wild thyme, to house-made plum wrap, the list goes on with delicious, palatetantalising ingredients that the Zeitoun brothers introduced to the regional palate. Maki opened in the Spring of 2010 to acclaim from both critics and guests, thus winning ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Japanese’ consecutively. The passion and imagination which resulted in the inception, and later on, evolution of this wonderful concept produced several award-winning dishes such as the Sushi Jewels, which comprises an acrylic-glass tower of an Omakase sushi, garnished with delectable, delicate housemade sauces. The Tiramisu sushi recently won best sushi creation at Horeca Kuwait 2016. Combining the iconic Italian dessert with the sushi concept, this dish presents 14

gourmands with an amalgamation of red quinoa, caramelised almond, topped with Nutella cream, tiramisu biscuit, shiso cress, edible flower, raspberry sauce, and cocoa powder. So what does Amer order when he dines at Maki, we wonder? Maki’s menu is extremely versatile, but Amer opts for the dishes that combine ‘tasty’ with ‘healthy’. He says: “Some of my favourites include the Chuka Salad, the Amorous Salad, the Azayaka Chili Shake Sashimi, the Oliver Temaki, the Tuna Rocket Man Maki, the Green Shake Maki, and the Akagome (red rice) Salmon Teppanyaki.”
If you’re searching for some healthful, delicious choices on your next Maki visit, we have given you the ‘lowdown’ on Amer’s favourites, but feel free to ask the knowledgeable staff for recommendations as well. ✤ GO: Visit Maki at Bahrain World Trade Centre. Work the Quirk Bahrain is buzzing with tons of weird, wonderful and interesting shops, entertainment spots and much more – and you’ll f ind these places in some of the less mainstream malls that are great for shopping and fun, and for avoiding the crowds! Here are some of our favourites…
RAMLI MALL A hidden gem on the mall scene, this place is fantastic for oud, shoes, food and amusements. From Asgharali to Junaid Perfumes, Rasasi Perfumes and more, there’s so much choice for all things that smell good! Hush Puppies and Payless are two of our favourite footwear stores, whilst Lulu Hypermarket stocks everything from food, homeware, kitchen products, luggage, fashion and loads more, becoming a one-stop shop for all your everyday needs. The food court at Ramli Mall is big, bright and packed with all your faves like Yum Yum Tree and Mcdonald’s, plus the arcade area is fabulous for young kids and grown-ups alike. But, the absolute standout is the completely awesome Daiso Japan #1 Value Store. This is the kind of place you go into and think “yes, I need chair socks, and I need teddy-bear-shaped candle holders, and absolutely yes, I need wooden memorabilia boxes, glass jars, garden furniture, wrapping paper, and…” – whether or not you ACTUALLY need all these things is debateable, but the fact that so many useful and unusual items are in one place, at amazing prices, means you’ll want to pick up as much as you can just because it’s there. Window shoppers will love walking around the store and browsing the aisles – we’re sure that something cool and wacky will get your attention! GO: Visit www.ramlimall.com for more information. 32

RIYADAT MALL
SAAR MALL
Ok, let’s get straight to the point. No one will ever say, “let’s go and hang out at Riyadat Mall” because the place has a very big office-style feel rather than a shopping mall vibe, however, when you do venture into the mall, you’ll be surprised to find some seriously cool boutique-like shops. Our favourite find was Her Art; a truly unique and beautiful store, selling products that embody both a traditional and modern feel. You can get gahwa tea cups and sets, frames, paintings on canvas, cushions, souvenirs and other bits with a touch of Bahraini culture and heritage. What we loved most about this shop is that prices are incredibly reasonable for the quality of the product! Just around the corner, you’ll find Jump Kids Gym. After taking a small tour of the place, we found that there’s loads of fun mini-size equipment along with scheduled games, classes, dancing and more, as well as a summer camp running throughout the month of August which also offers water sports days at Lagoona Beach. If you’re in the area and in need of a pretty gift or bouquet of flowers, pop into Joojoo Flowers for funky party favours, graduation presents and other items for special occasions.
Priding itself on catering to all your needs under one roof, Saar Mall is definitely one of the best alternative shopping destinations; from The Bookcase to Art’s Corner, Innovation, Peak A Boo Kids, and many other specialty stores, not only does the mall house great shops, it has many banking and telecoms services as well as a good variety of dining venues. In fact, many people visit Saar Mall specifically to grab a coffee at Costa or a light meal at Le Chocolat – it’s all delicious food without the long waits and crazy crowds. Yellow Submarine and Kid’s Toys Palace provide a safe and fun environment for children to learn, play and party with friends too. ✤

YATEEM CENTRE Who hasn’t been to or at least heard of this place? It’s famously known as the first mall to open in Bahrain and it still offers all the charm of local shopping, with the addition of new facilities too. Yateem Centre has been located in the Souq, the heart of Manama, for more than 25 years now, becoming a shoppers’ jewel for both old school and new visitors. Electronics, watches, men’s and women’s fashion, perfume and cosmetics, jewellery, gifts and handicrafts, shoes, sports and other services like printing, travel, salon, arts and more, are all housed in this complex. Secret Spots Ok, so maybe they’re not so secret (well, not anymore), but there are a few places that still remain underrated for all that they offer in terms of shopping, entertainment and dining. Let us highlight a few that are def initely worth a visit…
SEEF MALL MUHARRAQ
AL RAYA MALL
THE JAWAD DOME
Perfectly located for residents of Amwaj, Hidd, Muharraq and surrounding areas, this home of high-street brands was a much welcomed addition to the shopping scene when it opened up. Some of our favourite stores include Call it Spring, Aldo Accessories, The Children Place, and Splash. But, most of all, we LOVE the near hidden Segafredo Zanetti coffee shop. It’s in a fantastic quiet location on the first floor, with great views, excellent coffee, and most of all, a fast WiFi connection – it’s where to go if you want some peace and quiet to do some work, with a good cuppa and snacks on hand.
Not only is there a fantastic Alosra Supermarket in this mall, you’ve got seriously amazing dining outlets including Starbucks, Round Table Pizza, Esquires Coffee House, Pomodorini, Bluefield Burger Company, Purple Swirl and Kojo Japanese Restaurant. The 4000sqm building boasts 30 shops, along with entertainment venues and children’s recreational areas. We absolutely adore the recently-opened international concept-store Troufa Bread & Chocolate. Combining the aroma of a French bakery, the buzz of an Italian espresso bar and the look of a Manhattan cafe, diners can enjoy a selection of coffee, all time favourite desserts like éclairs, lemon tarts, apple pies, gianduja cakes, and profiteroles, and gluten-free sandwiches, petites feuilles, quiches, croque-monsieur and lots of other savoury pastries. However, it’s the delicious raw chocolate that has us hooked!
A fab one-stop shopping centre, The Jawad Dome in Barbar caters to all areas of your lifestyle making shopping fun and convenient. Pick up groceries in Jawad Supermarket, browse in stores like Artikel and Galleria Sophia looking for that perfect knick-knack for your home, or pick up some fashion musts at Accessorize, Hush Puppies and more branded stores. Enjoy great food at Tilly’s and savour the joys of a traditional English Afternoon Tea. Whet your appetite at the food court and choose from a range of cuisines from around the world – Thai, Chinese or American, which includes Chili’s, Papa John’s, Dairy Queen and Deli France. For those who have a playful side, walk into Game On and discover a world of console games, blue ray movies – buy them or play there in front of big screens. There’s free WiFi and ample parking too!

WADI AL SAIL MALL This place is definitely on our one to watch out radar, and though it’s quite empty at the moment, what IS there, actually makes it worthwhile to visit. There’s a really good Bossini store, alongside a Geant hypermarket, but above all, there’s a BD2 million, and Cineco’s most technologicallyadvanced, Cineplex, showing all the latest films. A fantastic choice for avoiding the crowds of movie buffs, especially during the week. ✤ GO: Visit Wadi Al Sail Mall in Riffa. Go to www.kmcholding.com for more information. 38

Big Screen Suicide Squad What’s it about: U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller comes up with the idea to recruit imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency. Once this dangerous group realises they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability, will they resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Director: David Ayer cast: Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Cara Delevinge
Highlights “It’s almost like an anti-hero film where the bad guys are shockingly bad, but together they’re doing good.”
Sausage Party What’s it about: An R-rated animation about one sausage and his food friends’ quest to discover the truth about their existence.
– Suicide Squad
Why it’s worth watching? It’s been a crazy busy year for fans of superhero films and things aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice proved to be a disappointment for Warner Bros. Pictures at the box office, the studio is really banking on the success of Suicide Squad to help turn things around. And we think it’s absolutely possible! Here’s how it goes down; assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated super villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, unbeatable entity. Errr, what’s not to love? It’s almost like an anti-hero film where the bad guys are shockingly bad, but together they’re doing good. Being huge fans of the growing DC movie universe, we can’t wait to see the beautiful Margot Robbie take on the role of Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as The Joker – from early screening reactions, the hype is REAL. Let’s hope director David Ayer has created something that was worth the wait this summer.

Name two superhero films that have been released in 2016? Send your answers to shabana@fact-magazine.com
Director: Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon cast: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, James Franco, Johan Hill, Salma Hayek Why it’s worth watching? We’re going to be completely honest here; it’s rude, it’s crude, it plays on stereotypes and there’s an f-bomb dropped pretty much every few seconds. Some will find it hilarious, others might say it’s moronic, either way, there’s never been anything like it before; raunchy, rowdy and nearly utterly insane. As you might expect, the film traffics heavily in food-related puns – some amusing, and others eye-rolling. Sausage Party gamely tries to discuss at least one larger idea, introducing a theological debate about whether believing in something you can’t prove is sensible or stupid. We’ll let you give the verdict on this one!

BIOGRAPHY/MEMOIR
In Order to Live By Yeonmi Park
HIP-HOP/RAP INDIE/FOLK
And Then Like Lions By Blind Pilot
These guys are one of our absolute favourite folk-pop bands. They’re charming, their sound is mellow and they like to take their time. It’s been almost five years since the Portland-based group released its second album, We Are The Tide, which gave them relatively great success in the charts but also helped them to gain the love and respect of music fans the world over. And Then Like Lions gives a nod to having that feeling of the past not being finished with us yet. Tracks like Don’t Doubt and It Was Enough open up a conversation about different kinds of loss and the courage we find when we face loss honestly. The soft and dreamy opening track, Umpqua Rushing with its hazy, quiet melody that builds slowly but insistently, befitting the band’s long balanced rising star status. The song is about the Umpqua Forest in Oregon and the lost coast of Northern California, and how these places echo memories and stories back to the band, when they visit. It’s this kind of pure and original approach that keeps Blind Pilot at the top of their music game.

And The Anonymous Nobody
She was born in one of the world’s darkest, closed-off and most repressive countries, and Yeonmi Park was running for her life with her family to escape the wicked clutches of North Korea. This book is the story of Park’s struggle to survive on her way to freedom; a harrowing escape through China’s underworld of smugglers and human traffickers; and then her escape from China across the Gobi desert to Mongolia, with only the stars to guide her way, and from there to South Korea and at last to freedom; and finally her emergence as a leading human rights activist - all before her 21st birthday.
By De La Soul
Where do we begin with this trio? They’ve been on the scene since 1989 and even back then, De La Soul was hailed as the future of hip-hop and rightly so. In the chaos of the Kanye, Meek Mill and Tyga-types, you’ve got a hip-hop group with colourful, low-key, and very clever rhymes, mixed with a neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles. Not only was And The Anonymous Nobody funded by a Kickstarter campaign (raising over $600,000), it also features an eclectic mix of special guests like Damon Albarn, Usher, Pete Rock, Jill Scott and Snoop Dogg to name but a few music heavy weights. We already adore the track Trainwreck, a funky tune about patience and perseverance, and we’re hoping that the album follows suit. If there’s a little bit of funk, soul, pop, jazz, reggae and psychedelia – we’ll be throwing our hands up in praise for the De La Soul that we know and love!
MODERN FICTION
My Name is Leon By Kit De Waal
Leon is a nine-year-old boy and has a perfect baby brother called Jake. They have gone to live with Maureen, who has fuzzy red hair like a halo, and a belly like Father Christmas. But the adults are speaking in low voices, and wearing Pretend faces. They are threatening to give Jake to strangers. Since Jake is white and Leon is not. Evoking a Britain of the early eighties, this book is both heartbreaking and hopeful drawing on love, identity, the fierce bond between siblings and how - just when we least expect it we manage to find our way home.

from amman to the world: A New Superhero Sensation If you were at the 2016 Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) in Dubai, you will have heard the buzz surrounding the Arab world’s newest superhero – Wayl. A collaborative effort between creator and writer Zaid Adham and artist Yasser Alireza, the comic book garnered much attention before its unveiling and an already growing fan base after a successful debut at MEFCC. I
t’s not often that you hear of a superhero comic book that is created and set in the Middle East, in fact, pop culture in the Arab world isn’t really famed for offering up strong, heroic protagonists to capture the minds and hearts of readers and viewers… yet. Well, that’s all about to change. Enter Wayl (meaning Woe), a story about Sufyan El-Taher, a man who has recently returned to his hometown of Amman, the capital city of Jordan, from a long life abroad, only to find the city in ruins with crime and corruption taking over. Sufyan, who ultimately becomes Wayl, is tasked with saving his city from this bleak reality. It’s a refreshing concept, one that the Middle East and international audiences are ready for, and it’s made all the more authentic as we learn that Zaid Adham, Arab-Canadian writer, producer and director, and the man behind the storytelling of this comic, was actually born in Amman – where Wayl is set. “There were many inspirations behind Wayl,” he says. “You see, the spiritual atmosphere that I had intended to showcase stemmed from the visions I had in my head of my hometown of Amman, which I had always felt had a unique aura to it. If there was one place in the Middle East that could truly be
48
fact magazine
home to a comic book superhero, regardless of the medium, it would be Amman. “Writing the stories came from different places, but the underlying bond between them all, I guess, would be that atmosphere and the need to distinguish Arab comic art as something more than just derivative or stereotypical - sword-wielding nomads in the desert or genies fighting demons in the sky,” he continues. “I wanted this to be a pure form of entertainment, and set out to write this way.” The foundation of Wayl’s incredibly powerful plot is one that resonates, deeply, now more than ever before, as talented people from the Middle East region strive to break into a competitive regional and and global creative market. And, though the comic book will not intend to enter into political or religious realms of the region, its message of ethics, morals and the pursuit of justice will, to a certain extent, also help to eliminate any negative stereotypes of Middle Eastern culture.
wayl: need to know! - Wayl is an adult-targeted series with a psycho-thriller theme and 16+ rating. - Wayl’s superpower stems from his ability to channel his neuroelectricity to create any object or weapon of his desire. - Zaid and Yasser met at Kinokuniya, whilst browsing comics, in Dubai Mall. - Yasser’s part in Wayl, the artistic side, took one year to complete. - The development of the comic from concept to publication took five years.
arts & culture With its many characters, Wayl helps to educate, inspire, and prepare, as well as entertain, a whole generation of young Arabs on the truths of the “real” world, including the kind of people you might encounter on a daily basis. Saudi illustrator and writer, Yasser Alireza, who makes up the second half of the creative team behind Wayl, explains: “It [Wayl] is very real and relatable. This is the whole point of the comic. The story, the atmosphere and the art draws on insights that are local but told from a worldly point of view both in terms of story and art. “Most people who read our comic will see the characters and find equivalents in their daily life. These characters may not behave in such exaggerated ways, but the essence of each character will be recognisable to readers, especially those who are active in the work force and are exposed to life’s challenges,” he adds. “Like most story tellers, we do have an objective with readers: we want the late teens who are heading off to college or 20-somethings joining the workforce to understand the complex types of people they will be dealing with and how every decision is not black or white, and that mistakes will happen with long-lasting impact.”
“The city of Amman as set fictionally in this story has become dystopian, corrupt and overrun with crime, with even the forces of law apathetic to do anything about it. The protagonist’s proactivity towards the events that he witnesses sets him on the path to becoming the woe to the city’s crime, exemplified in his motto, Woe unto the wicked.”- Zaid Adham on choosing to call the comic Wayl. fact magazine

arts & culture
The first issue of Wayl develops the introductory story of Sufyan’s return to Amman and begins developing the series of events that led to the creation of the superbeing Wayl. Zaid tells us: “The Wayl character as an Arab superhero and the supporting characters who are with him in the story were inspired by the evident reality many Arab people live today: bi-lingual, dual-nationality, dual identity. “There is a large palette of characters to choose from that can be rooted in the city of Amman, but the fact that Sufyan is the son returning from abroad, who can be described as a Third Culture Kid, is a reflection of the sort of culture shock many people experience when going back to their hometowns if they haven’t lived there most of their lives,” Zaid adds. “I certainly have that culture shock, and it’s easy to draw inspiration from that.” One of the interesting things that strikes us about Wayl, is its looming storyline and the way in which Zaid and Yasser have worked to create something that can be relatable to a wide spectrum of audiences. Zaid’s background as a writer-director of psychological thrillers will, no doubt, have been a big influence in this. But, also, the way in which Yasser has visually developed the world of Wayl, adds to the darkness created in the comic book. “Wayl’s unique positioning is that, it is an adult-targeted series framed as a caper story with a psycho-thriller theme - one of the few, if not the only in the region, hence the 16+ rating on the cover,” Yasser explains. “With that in mind, it became important for Zaid and I to portray this series in a manner that would appeal to an older audience. “Visually, the comic is filled with dark tones,
rigid lines and breaks from conventional drawing styles seen in most superhero comics. Panel layouts shift from simple to complex depending on story tension as we took liberty with adding a surreal feel to the comic, intending an eerie atmosphere. Keeping in mind that Wayl is a superhero comic at heart, we maintained some basic elements seen in superhero comics to keep it recognisable and relatable to readers,” he says. Both Zaid and Yasser make it a point to note that, even though Wayl has an edgier side, it doesn’t, in any way, champion hopelessness. Actually, it’s the very opposite. Wayl addresses some of the dark realities about the world we live in, as an importance to build the foundations for a hopeful outcome and a better future. After hearing about the work process behind Wayl, it’s no secret that Zaid and Yasser’s working relationship is based on trust, respect and mutual understanding for one another’s craft. Add to this their personal friendship and you’ve got a recipe for creative success. Two things set Wayl apart from other comics: it’s a superhero story with a completely localised angle and with sophisticated design. But, it’s winning factor has to be the two incredibly passionate creators at the helm. We can't wait to see what the future holds for this talented duo and their comic baby! ✤ fact magazine

Smile Bright Orthodontic Packages at Royal Bahr ain Hospital

one are the embarrassing days of unsightly braces. Now with invisible ones, your secret is safe and you can smile with confidence. The general perception of dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces, is that they are only used to align or straighten teeth. However, they also help to improve your bite and dental health at the same time. Braces are often used to correct malocclusions like under bites, over bites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. Royal Bahrain Hospital’s Orthodontist, Dr Rajeesh Radhakrishnan, says: “Braces are required to correct the position of the teeth, aiding in achieving a better smile, reducing food impactions and gum infections. They are also often used in the correction of jaw positions,” he adds. “If left untreated, these problems can result in tooth decay, gum disease, headaches and earaches as well as speaking, biting or chewing problems.” Patients with orthodontic problems can benefit from treatment at nearly any age. An ideal age for getting braces is between 10 and 14 years but braces aren’t just for kids as more and more adults are opting to use them to correct minor problems and improve their smiles. The variety of orthodontic treatments available are aimed to maximise your teeth’s effectiveness in performing their functions in addition to creating a well-aligned smile. Some of the benefits include repositioning of the teeth and underlying roots, better support for the crown of the tooth, aesthetic improvements and overall comfort in a reduced treatment time. “Now at the Royal Dental Studio, we offer concealed or invisible braces that are well hidden from the sight of others,” Dr Radhakrishnan explains. Then, you can catch them. And it’s as simple as that. BTW, Pokemon is short for “pocket monster.” They’re tiny monsters that have been around for 20 years now, and growing in popularity more and more each day. So let us break it down for you. The premise of Pokemon Go is that these cute-ish pocket monsters are hidden around the real world - literally. You need to go look for them; when they get close enough, they’ll appear on your in-game radar and then you can try to catch them. It’s a time-honored tradition that, to catch a Pokemon, you throw a ball at it. The ball slurps it up like a vacuum cleaner and that Pokemon now belongs to you. How do you move? You walk. Like, with your body. You walk around the mall, your office (preferably not in front of the boss), Souq Waqif, and everywhere else, until you find a Pokemon. Then, you try to catch it. It’s a completely interactive concept and will really keep you on your toes. The flaws? The game’s developer, Niantic, didn’t anticipate this much demand and have had some major issues with their internet servers. As a result, the game’s launch in certain countries is delayed until they can fix the problems. Plus, people have become so addicted, they’re playing the game whilst driving, riding a bike, or doing something that needs greater attention than a mobile phone game (read the safety rules, guys). As far as augmented reality goes, Pokemon Go takes things to a whole new level – c’mon, what’s not cool about seeing tiny cartoon animals as if they’re in the real world? ✤ fact magazine

VENUE REVIEW
I
f you ask anyone in Dubai about their go-to recommendation for delicious Middle-Eastern cuisine, there’s one name that will come up more often than others; Reem Al Bawadi. This award-winning restaurant has become popular for its warm Arabic hospitality and traditional ambience as well as the excellent menu items. The Bahrain branch is located at Ramada Manama City Centre. It’s a HUGE venue with two main dining areas, separated by a wall and grand wooden doors – one side being non-smoking and the other offering shisha alongside food and drinks. There’s an expansive outdoor terrace too, which was on its way to completion during our visit – an area that is sure to be a popular evening hotspot in the cooler months. What we noticed immediately about Reem Al Bawadi is that all the interiors reminded us of a recent trip to Beirut. After all, much of the dishes on the menu are traditionally Lebanese. The stained glass windows, the ceramic plates, the classic paintings, the pretty lanterns and the feature stone bricks, all used to decorate the walls, the booths and different seating areas, were all components that you could find in every corner of Lebanon. The seating is comfy, with plenty of room on the tables for all the amount of food you wish to order! The restaurant is headed by Executive Chef Hossam Jabban, who has decades of culinary experience, having worked for big-name brands such as Sheraton, Radisson Blu, Sofitel and more recently Bahrain Airport Services. With the aim of offering the same consistently great taste of all the Reem Al Bawadi restaurants, Chef Hossam spent one month training and perfecting the menu to match the high expectations of Middle-Eastern food lovers in Bahrain. Our culinary journey started with a range of hot and cold mezza. From hummus, to eggplant moutabal, baba ghannouj, yalange (vine leaves), tabouleh, fatoush, fried calamari, cheese sambousek, grilled chicken wings and fried cheese sticks, plus other appetising items, arrived at the table in true Arabic-style portions. In fact, mezza is created to encourage sharing and conversation between diners – and, lo and 82

behold, all that we savoured was definitely a talking point. Our highlight was definitely the flavourpacked mohammarah – an exotically rich combination of chilli and walnuts, with texturising breadcrumbs and a touch of pomegranate molasses to balance. Scoop it up in a piece of warm bread and your tummy will soon be doing the happy dance – just delicious. If there’s a number of you at the table, order the Reem Al Bawadi Mezzah Mix – it’s perfect for sharing and getting a little taste of everything. The Iranian Kabab, made up of succulent chargrilled lamb kabab and chicken tikka, served with saffron rice and grilled tomato is a palate-pleaser, especially for meatlovers. Whilst the Chef ’s Fresh Seafood Selection will be paradise on a plate for all the seafood eaters out there; you get fresh hamour fillet, lobster, sea bass, salmon fillet and prawns, all grilled to perfection on the open coal grill, giving a delicious smokey BBQ taste, served with tartar sauce. One word: exquisite! The menu also boasts an International Flavours section, from which we would recommend the Chicken Cordon Bleu, especially if you like the combo of mushroom and Swiss cheese – yummy! There are pastas and pizzas, burgers and sandwiches, and, perhaps the most indulgent of all, a From the Bakery section with a range of bread, cheese, zaatar and chocolate infused options. For dessert, the Halawat Al Jiben – sweet cheese pastries stuffed with fresh ashta cream and topped with honey and pistachio – we just couldn’t get enough! The umm ali and rice pudding are both sensational too. At the end of our meal, we learned one important lesson; if you’re going to come to Reem Al Bawadi for food, come on an empty stomach, because there’s SO MUCH variety for friends, families and all the curious foodies and cultural explorers in town. Expect nothing less than authentic flavours and friendly service. ✤ GO: Visit Reem Al Bawadi at Ramada Manama City Centre. Call 1710 4000 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

hen you enter Lanterns in Riffa, you’ll be transported to an ambience of genuine Indian charm. The deep terracotta colours with rustic brown and brass gold all add a regal yet relaxed atmosphere to what is a beautiful, lightfilled venue. In particular, we were in awe of all the thoughtful décor that really makes this place look and feel like an Indian restaurant. There’s a juice cart, decked out in all the funky colours with wonderful candies and and chips inside, just like you’d expect to find on any street in India where traditional drinks like masala soda, lassi and falooda would be served; there’s also a jewellery cupboard, with dazzling bangles and bracelets, chains, and different types of Indian jewellery like jhumkis and kundan, again adding to the authentic character of the restaurant. Our absolute favourite element of the venue is the makeshift matka house. This area is located in a 86

corner of the restaurant and, very cleverly, doubles as a private dining room; ideal for those who want a more secluded seating option (it’s great for families). There are ornate gold windows that resemble the imperial doors of India’s majestic architecture, and there are even copper Muglai matka glasses, imported from India, on the table. The restaurant’s seating is spacious and comfortable. If you’re anything like us, you’ll be so mesmerised by all the little touches that you’ll want to keep walking around and taking pictures for your Snapchat and Instagram! Once we get well acquainted with our surroundings, it’s time to get stuck into the food – here comes the real test. Firstly, let us say, for a lunch buffet, this is incredible. The variety of food on offer is both simple yet abundant. There’s just the right amount of options for every course, and everything just so happens to taste amazing. Let’s talk about the highlights; for starters the onion bhaji is a must. Tip: dip into the green chutney before taking a

bite – you’ll thank us for how happy your taste buds will feel. From the salad station, you’ve got to try the Lanterns House Special and the Quinoa Salads – both are packed with fresh ingredients that ensure you start off your meal in a light and tasty way. Next, head for the mains. We would highly recommend trying the Create Your Own Stir Fry station – we opted for noodles with prawns and mussels, cooked with our choice of vegetables in the mouthwatering hot garlic sauce. Saying that the dish was seriously good is a complete understatement – the seafood was juicy, the vegetables crunchy and the sauce fiery - you just need to try it to appreciate it. Two curries that stood out for us included the Prawns Masala and the Murgh Makhani. The first carried that exquisite coastal flavour of onion and tomato with mustard seeds and lemon, whilst the latter, being a signature of the restaurant, spoke in hearty volumes to our palates, as its Punjab origins were highlighted in a tomato butter sauce with succulent boneless chicken. Paired with hot naan, you’ll be in food heaven. Dessert should be about one thing only (in our humble opinion), what’s that you say? Two words: Gulab Jamun; soft, spongy dumplings served with ice cream. What an end to a truly fabulous lunch? There are a number of veggie options on the lunch buffet too (the Dal Makhani is a good choice) and there’s a pasta station as well as a number of other appetisers, mains and a few desserts. You’ll be spoilt for choice! Though Lanterns is a multi-cuisine venue, boasting an a la carte menu that offers Chinese and Japanese food too, its mostly renowned for its authentic Indian cuisine, and if you want a taste of just how good that is, the lunch buffet at the Riffa branch will serve as an excellent insight. ✤ GO: The lunch buffet at Lanterns Restaurant Riffa is BD5.9net on weekdays and BD9.9net on weekends. Stay Hydrated
#AL #RASHID #GROUP #ANNUAL #GHABGA
Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…
With this extremely hot weather setting in, keeping hydrated is very important. If your lips are chapped and dry you know you’re dehydrated. The consumption of water is necessary to keep your body’s systems functioning properly and being well hydrated is also an essential part of good health. Other than flushing out your kidneys, water plays many roles throughout your body, such as regulating the temperature of your body, dissolving minerals and acting as a lubricant and shock absorber. You should drink water throughout the day as even mild dehydration can lead to the following: headaches, feeling thirsty, fatigue or sleepiness, dark urine (yellow or amber), constipation, urinary tract infections and joint problems. When exercising in this hot weather it is especially important to stay hydrated as water regulates your body temperature and replaces the water you have lost during your activity. Hydration is vital to your overall health so add more to your daily consumption. Keep a jug of water next to your bed at night so if you wake up in the middle of the night it’s right there, and you can drink it first thing in the morning too. Keep a glass or bottle of water on your desk at work, exchange your soda, tea or coffee for water, and drink two litres of water every day. If you want to keep those lips nice and smooth, there’s only one rule this summer - STAY HYDRATED. ✤ GO: Email ymcfitness@gmail.com or call 3935 9105 for more information.

ren’t we just spoilt for pampering in Bahrain? Though this is true, there’s one place that has stood out for me since it opened – Rimal Spa at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain. What is it about this spa that I love? Well, a number of things; the infusion of European and Arabic influence, the friendly and professional service, and above all, the modern, effective treatment menu. On my recent visit, I opted for the 90-minute Deluxe Oxygenating Facial with Eye Treatment (AntiPollution). This treatment is especially good for anyone who is feeling fatigued with a dry and dull complexion. It uses the famous Voya products which are popular for their detoxing and skin moisturising properties. The brand is based on certified organic, hand-harvested seaweed which rejuvenates and repairs the skin. The raw seaweed extracts are rich in minerals and oils; in combination with the finest organic ingredients, such as shea butter, bee’s wax, Dead Sea salts and pure aloe vera – basically, EVERYTHING you need and want in a great facial treatment. My therapist Johanna begins with a thorough back scrub using the Time to Shine body scrub. This exfoliating seaweed based lotion is fabulous to rid the body of dead skin cells pre-holiday excursions. The dual action lathering body buff exfoliates with finely ground walnut shells and the formula is gentle yet effective in removing rough and limp looking skin, to reveal vividly refined softer, silky smooth skin – it’s SO good that I fell asleep just a few minutes in! Next, the Forget me Knot conditioner is applied

to the hair after which the Cast Away gentle face wash is used to cleanse the face. With extracts of green tea and ginger root, not only does it smell good, it leaves my skin supplely soft. The face is then gently scrubbed with the Love a Scrub product which exfoliates the skin to produce a fresh revitalised look. The super light blend of organic botanical herbs with spiny bamboo, sweet almond oil, vanilla and aloe vera, is a non-aggressive exfoliant which removes the dead skin cells to allow refreshed skin to breathe without causing damage. After a thorough extraction of blackheads, the face is toned using the Ritzy Spritzy; a cool and soothing luxurious toner that’s also great for use on flights and the beach, thanks to the botanical herb and essential oil ingredients. Then came my favourite part of the treatment; a face massage using the My Little Hero serum, containing seaweed, sunflower oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E and vanilla. This product is an intense blend of organic oils,
designed to give the skin a boost of its natural defenses. These oils are naturally packed with powerful antioxidants, offering nourishment to improve radiance and bring life to dull skin.Johanna’s technique is that of a pro – I’m so relaxed that I soon nod fall into a dream world once more. After this comes the first application of Eye Serum, followed by the most innovative part of the treatment; the Maskerade Face Mask. This moisturising face mask contains seaweed, pro-collagen extract and other antioxidants. Its rich organic extracts calm irritated skin and moisturise dry skin. The hydrating seaweed-based ingredients and soothing chamomile will leave your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated all day long. It feels like cooling gel on the skin – unlike any other face mask I’ve ever tried before. You’ll get a tingling but pleasant lift. Another round of a firming face mask and eye patch, followed by toning and application of the Bright Eye serum and Me Time moisturiser (with seaweed, pro collagen extract, marigold and aloe vera), and I’m good to go. I cannot begin to explain just HOW MUCH I needed this, and the chances are that after you’ve experienced the wonders of this facial, you’ll be in awe of its immediate restorative results, too. ✤ GO: Visit Rimal Spa at Movenpick Hotel Bahrain. If you live in Bahrain, chances are you love to partake in what has become our national pastime - shopping. The growth in the amount of retail outlets on the island over the past 10 years, has been eye-watering. Believe it or not, when I first arrived in Bahrain, I used to travel back home to Australia with empty suitcases, to bring back all of the items I couldn’t buy locally. Now it’s the other way round. Shopping in Bahrain offers good variety, reasonable prices, and (most importantly right now), a comfortable air-conditioned environment. The smartest way to shop - obvs - is to wait for the sales. Unless that is, you really have to have it RIGHT NOW. We’ve all been there right? Maybe you need it for the hot date you’ve got later that night, or you’ve been looking for something just like it for what seems like forever, or perhaps it just makes you look and feel a million bucks. Or all of the above. In that case, just buy that dress/bag/shoe. Life’s too stinking short. But if you can wait just a little, ask your friendly sales assistant when it’s likely to be reduced, and set a reminder in your phone. There’s nothing more satisfying than walking away with something you adore, for less than the original price. Just one last piece of advice - sales can be EXTREMELY seductive. It’s always tempting to buy an item you don’t need, just because it’s reduced. To avoid impulse-buying, try it on, and put it aside for 30 mins while you go and do a few others things. This will give you time to decide if a) you need it b) you love it, and c) it completes you. Happy shopping! ✤
…now that is a favourite phrase with many of us women. I sometimes think that shopping of any kind is part of our DNA. But I could be wrong of course. For me, personally, I don’t really have a big need to shop but what I’ve noticed is that once I start, I want some more. So I can understand how shopping can become an addiction to some. And just like all good things, it’s better done in moderation. Have you heard that it’s better to not go grocery shopping on an empty stomach? Well, with retail shopping it might be better to go prepared instead of just shopping on a whim. Know what is in your wardrobe. Know exactly which outfits need completing. This way you won’t buy more of the same of what you have already. Be aware of what your budget is and be resolute to not exceed it. It’s so easy to go over budget when it gets hard to choose between two lovely things that you feel that you have to have right now. When you find something that you’re not sure about, don’t buy it. Instead, go home and think about whether it’s something you really want and can afford. Don’t get pressured by sales people who may say all kinds of things to get you to buy. They’re just doing their jobs. All that awesome shopping is waiting for you ladies! It can be so much more fun when you go in prepared and empowered! ✤
