ith all that’s going on in the world, isn’t it lovely to have a place amidst all the noise to call home? Right in the centre of the globe, the Gulf has become a sanctuary for many expats and travellers. So it gives me immense pleasure to see Bahrain's hospitality scene growing and thriving. We're lucky to have some of the world's best hotel brands take up residence on the beautiful island we call home. To give our favourite properties a shoutout, we rounded up the best instagram accounts to follow for your very own wanderlust inspo right here in Bahrain. Turn to p23 for #HotelGoals and check out the list of places you need to be following for all the latest room deals, foodie promos, competitions and daily reminders of the stunning hotels we're surrounded by for quick escapes, leisurely lunches, pool days and so much more. Whose insta game are you loving at the moment? We also shine a spotlight on one of the most talented Bahrain-based photographers - Jody Peck - whose work, a special series captured in Nepal, alongside previous striking images, are all on display at InTouch Gallery. Starting p35 learn more about Jody's skills, though-process and advice for budding photographers as he presents to you the exhibition: Family in the Mountains. For many, the summer is a time to escape to more satisfying climates, so this month’s Globetrotter comes straight from Madrid (p44) whilst those who want to keep things close enough should consider the simple modernity of the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai for a weekend escape that will blow you away (p51). Dining goes full on top notch this month with our food features highlighting the brand new Indian venue, Jashan (p77), a Chinese favourite, Sato (p81), a Friday brunch must at ART Rotana (p85) and authentic eats at Cucina Italiana (p89). You’ll also find a host of new dining deals, activities and experiences to tick off the list before the back-to-school rush begins. Who says that August has to be the month of the summer slump? Not here. As long as you’ve got your copy of FACT, there’s something new to do every day! ☺

ICONIC TEAROOM TRADITION The first Angelina patisserie and tearoom opens in Adliya’s Block 338, and our sweet tooth couldn’t be more excited. THE ICONIC PATISSERIE AND tearoom, Angelina Paris, is now open for all dessert and beverage fans in Adliya. The venue has seating for over 50 people and offers diners signature pastries, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the day. Speaking at the opening of Angelina, Isabelle de Bardies CEO of Angelina worldwide, said: “Generations have gone by since the launch of the first Angelina, and the elegant establishment has retained its fame over the years. Many luminaries have crossed paths in its rooms, including Proust and Coco Chanel. Today, Angelina represents a brand of timeless luxury and symbolises the French art of living around the world, which we are proud to be bringing to Bahrain in collaboration with Kingdom Gourmet.” The Bahrain outpost of Angelina is a welcome addition to the famed Parisian tearoom’s footprint, with H.E. Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance, officially opening the restaurant at the ribbon cutting. Founded in 1903, Angelina’s history dates back to the early 20th century, when Paris was still imbued with the spirit of the Belle Époque. It was then that tea rooms were born and adopted by Parisians as their new meeting places, more comfortable than traditional cafés and more fashionable than pastry shops. During this period, the Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer arrived in the South of France, where he opened several shops and forged himself an excellent reputation. As the story goes, the Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary fell in love with his pastries and confectionaries during a visit to France. 10
fact magazine
Encouraged by his success, Mr Rumpelmayer decided to conquer the French capital. In 1903, he founded a tearoom at 226 rue de Rivoli, where the former Hôtel Windsor used to be. He entrusted its management to his son, René, whose wife was named Angeline. A few years later, they decided to call the tearoom Angelina. The Rumpelmayer family’s expertise and passion for delicate confectionaries seduced Parisians, and Angelina quickly became the essential gathering place for high society. ✤

VENUE: Ayyam Gallery DATE: Until September 20 you + topia touches on cultural, social, and geo-political problems of contemporary Middle- Eastern artists. These artists use art as a battleground to reflect on anxiety and optimism, while offering a place of resistance in a climate where we co-exist between war and terror. In order to maintain identity within the ever-changing landscape between real and ideal, the artists depict their true tones through images of collapsing worlds and places of tension. In the meanwhile, the desire and expectations of a true ‘utopia’ reside on the borderline; a place of obstruction. www.ayyamgallery.com
EXHIBITION: Each Day An Artist ARTIST: Various VENUE: Lawrie Shabibi DATE: Until September 1 The exhibition opened on May 12 with the work of one artist, and every day a new artist was added. Over the run of the exhibition, a total of 30 artists are being showcased. The list of invited artists will reflect the gallery’s personal interests – the directors and other members of the gallery. The exhibition includes artists from the gallery’s roster as well as artists working with other galleries in Dubai. Many have never exhibited in the gallery or alongside the other artists being shown. EXHIBITION: Inner and Outer Space ARTIST: Kenny Scharf VENUE: Leila Heller Gallery DATE: Until August 31 The first solo exhibition in the UAE by Kenny Scharf (b. 1958), muralist, painter, sculptor, and installation artist, best known for his fantastical, large-scale paintings of anthropomorphic animals and imagined creatures. The exhibition features a selection of large-scale works on canvas as well as relief sculptures comprised of oil painted televisions and small assemblages of found objects. His new body of work is a reaction to what he perceives as our ‘increasingly out-of-control situation’, depicted by the melting faces in his paintings. After almost five years of work, the new hall has been fully remodelled and designed to keep up with the latest developments in the museum field, update the latest archaeological research and to provide a new enhanced and engaging museum experience while respecting the Bahrain National Museum mission statement. The goals of the remodelling were threefold; to significantly enhance the exhibition space, allow the museum to exhibit its latest collection in more interdisciplinary ways and include the latest archaeological research, and to engage a wider audience. Designed by French architect Didier Blin, the new Hall of Dilmun Graves preserved the original reconstitution of Dilmun burial mounds that were the focus of the first exhibition, while enhancing the presentation and interpretation of the collection and introducing new multimedia installations. Moreover, the new exhibition has been curated to create a clear itinerary that focuses on the burial traditions from the Dilmun period and that allows the visitor to understand the historic value and uniqueness of the iconic Burial Mounds of Bahrain - currently listed on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list. ody and a friend were out venturing in nearby mountains as they came across this very steep and unstable looking road. This is how they found the way to the place he would call home for nearly a month - the small sleepy village of Pachbaya. Pachbaya's high altitude and location gives it the most amazing view of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Jody quickly fell into the family's daily routine and started documenting their life. The grandmother feeding the chickens and pruning the surrounding vegetation. The Mother and Father organising their kids for school, then unlocking their cabinet to sell sweets and crisps to the local kids and passers by; and the Grandfather wondering off every morning in his aged suit jacket to see his friends down the hill. Hi Jody, congratulations on the exhibition! How does it feel to have your photographs showcased for a wider audience to see? It’s always nice to be able to display your work to a wider audience, especially as Bahrain has quite a following of people who appreciate photography. We read about your experience in Nepal. Can you describe for us what it is that you resonated with most and why you fell in love with this place in particular?. Well I think once you visit a place that really is so different and has a very different way of life to what you are used to, it’s very plain to see and hard to actually miss what’s going on around you. Appreciating the fact that you don’t need all of life’s luxuries to be happy. It was such a great and humbling experience to see how the Nepalese live. I hope you enjoy the photos and one day visit Nepal as well. Is there a difference in approach when you’re photographing people as opposed to just places and landscapes – what sort of style do you adopt with both? The great thing about travel photography is that you are not limited to any one style. I tend to stick with four types: street photography, landscape, architectural and portraits. Portrait and street photography both involve people and capturing a moment of activity and getting the shot that describes what they do day to day. Ideally. landscape and architectural photography involve no people. Can you tell us about some of the tools and techniques of photography that you apply to your work and why these specifically? I tend to travel with one DSLR and three lenses, a tripod and a go pro. Plus either enough memory cards to last the trip or a laptop to transfer images to. Depending on the location that I'm heading to I may just take the one lens most likely a 24 to 70 f2.8 or maybe a second (either a wide 16 to 30 f4 or a 70 to 200 f2.8). Carrying three lenses the whole day while you are bouncing from tuk-tuk to busses to hiking up Adam’s peak can become pretty tiring as together it’s all pretty heavy. I learnt this the hard way when I was in China carrying five lenses on a hiking trip.

As a photographer, do you set out with a “vision” to capture something very precise or do you just see where the road leads and go with the flow? From the moment I land in a different country, I have my camera with me strapped to my backpack so if I see something I want to shoot, it’s accessible straight away. If it takes time to get your gear ready, you have likely missed the shot. It can be cumbersome at times but that's what it’s all about - either you are there to shoot or to have a good time. For myself, the two never really mix. I tend to see what comes my way when travelling and take advantage of the situation. If I go to a wildlife reserve, for example, then I will be sure to take a telephoto lens to get up close to the subject I'm shooting and likely a wide for the open landscape of the reserve. If I’m in the jungle, I tend to use a medium 24 to 70 or a 70 to 200 to get up close to smaller creatures that you pass by. Explain what goes through your mind when you’re photographing a series like the one you will have on display at InTouch Gallery – do you feel connected to your subject from behind the lens? The strange thing is, when shooting, I somewhat feel detached because you are also concentrating on the tech side of taking an image. Making sure the horizon is straight and the exposure is good. Every time you move the lighting around, it changes. So you have to be on top of that so your images are exposed correctly. If you blow out an image then you simply can't use it.

• ARTS Let’s take it back to the beginning. How did you get into photography and is it something you had always wanted to pursue professionally? From a young age, I was always using my dad's camera and taking photos. I didn't really have any idea on what I was doing but the composition in the pictures seemed to be pretty good looking back. Then my brother handed down a Fuji Bridge camera that I used to learn on how to shoot manually. I then started using it for architectural photography when I used to work in real estate. From then on I moved on through the ranks of Canon DSLRs as was needed for professional grade images. Did you face any challenges whilst photographing this series in Nepal? If so, how did you overcome them? Yes, one week after being in Nepal my DSLR failed, and I have my studio camera but it was in Bahrain. After a quick search on social media, amazingly, a friend was travelling from Bahrain to Nepal later that week. He saved the day and picked it up and then we met. I am very much an outdoors person and quite happy to bag up some basic stuff and go out to the country or the desert and rough it or camp. Oman was the time when I learnt to drive and soon ventured out and learnt how to navigate mountain roads and deserts; Wahiba sands and Jebel Shams for example so, as far as challenges go, I feel I'm pretty flexible with most situations regarding travelling, but find waiting for flights and flying is a tedious process. Have you got any tips and advice for young budding photographers? Travel light. Know what you need. Think about the shot. Try and get the shot you want in three or four exposures so when it comes to editing you don't have to go through loads of the same images to choose the best. Understand composition and follow the rule of thirds. That being said, rules are a guide and if it works for you then go for it. Try and be consistent and keep to the same style. Style will come with time. Always ask permission before shooting a portrait, most of the time locals love having their picture taken. Keep your equipment secure over your head and shoulder and if need be, cover your camera when you feel the need to as you never know when someone could try and snatch it. I have never had an issue before in any country but I have always been aware of my surroundings. Buy yourself a good tripod; it will pay off when you need it most. And it's a great tool to use while learning the fine adjustments from changing your aperture and understanding the difference from f2.8 to f11. Learn to shoot in manual then you can be specific in what you want and be more creative while at the same time getting the best possible image quality out of the camera. Don’t be afraid of using a high ISO if you need to. A noisy image is better than a blurred one.

What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2018? I will be spending more time on photography. The last year has been more about filming and getting up to speed with editing film. It’s a process and a learning curve that I’m now pretty comfortable with. I have missed the creative side of photography and would like to spend a bit more time on light painting and long exposure shoots again. ✤

BIG SCREEN A Prayer Before Dawn WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
When Billy Moore is sent to two of Thailand’s most notorious prisons, he is immediately thrown into a terrifying world of drugs and gang violence. With fighting tournaments being his only ticket to freedom, he embarks on a non-stop, action packed journey from one savage fight to next in order to finally regain the life he lost.
DIRECTOR: Jean-Stephane Sauvaire CAST: Joe Cole, Nicolas Shake, Somluck Kamsing
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
A grueling insight into one of the world’s most harrowing prisons, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Thai prison memoir is going to leave you with a lot of feelings. Based on a true story about English boxer Billy Moore, the movie fuses the world of boxing with the unforgiving world of violence and drugs. While keeping the sordid details of Moore’s past including his heroin addiction and 15 years spent in different prisons to a bare minimum, the film focuses on his life inside the nightmarish lock up. When a young English boxer is incarcerated in two notorious Thai prisons, he realises that taking part in Muay Thai boxing tournaments might be his only way out. Stopping at nothing, he moves from competition to competition to do whatever it takes to preserve his life and win back his independence. Shot in an actual Thai prison with a cast of primarily real inmates, A Prayer Before Dawn offers a raw and realistic look into Moore’s journey through a haunting hell on earth.

DINING HEIGHTS
If you’re a bit of a food and drinks connoisseur, you are well and truly in your element at Gran Meliá Fenix Hotel Madrid. The restaurant Burgundy and the DRY Martini Bar by Javier de las Muelas offer two unique and innovative experiences that won’t be forgotten quickly. The first is fine-dining perfection; a distinctive restaurant offering modern cuisine using the freshest and best possible products. Behind all the work in the kitchen is Chef David Marcano, and in the bodega they have the “En Copa de Balón” sommelier team. These are just two things that give the restaurant its unique personality and offer visitors a complete dining experience. Delicious flavours and aromas, matching food and vino flawlessly, and making our evening dinner one of the most delightful gastronomic and oenological experiences in the city – that’s what Burgundy did for us. We highly recommend trying the ceviche of wild corvina with sweet potato and corn field and the tiger prawn salad in tempura accompanied by Japanese mayonnaise for starters, whilst the fried tuna loin grilled with demi-glace seasonal vegetables and the braised sirloin with salt flakes and chiantarella are both meticulously cooked and presented mains that satisfied every taste bud. For desert, the mouthwatering homemade cheese flan with seasonal fruit alongside the moreish torrija de pan brioche are the impeccable ending to our very satiating meal. Considered the “epicenter” of the cocktail scene in Madrid, the famous DRY Martini Bar by Javier de las Muelas has rapidly become the best way to start or end an evening in the city. It’s got a fantastic atmosphere and a sophisticated spirit that truly represents the emblem of the Gran Meliá Fénix Hotel.Of course, the drinks are pretty good too! If you’re looking for something a little more casual and with w view, try Aduana Restaurant. Located on the seventh floor of the hotel, it provides diners with spectacular views of Madrid. You’ll take a seat right above the heart of the Milla de Oro (Golden Mile) in the district of Salamanca, and you’ll be nibbling on modern Mediterranean and fusion cuisine. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT Entering the lobby of the hotel, you’ll be greeted by a super chic space with art installations and modern décor. The hotel’s design is inspired by the fluidity of Dubai’s iconic sand dunes, with tones of black and gold present throughout the public spaces and guestrooms. The fit out is different to any other hotel in the city, there are impressive lighting features, exposed ironwork beams, floorto-ceiling golden chains and an industrial feel in parts. A lot of time and thought has gone into the design of this property. It’s very warm and relaxed and you can feel this from the moment you enter the hotel. Staff are super professional, yet laid back and chatty. There is no pomposity here. FUNKY MEETS ELEGANCE The 298-room property in located on the cusp of fact magazine

Business Bay, just a 10-minute walk from the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, and a quick drive to DIFC. The concierge is replaced by a navigator who can suggest hidden places to explore which is an excellent unique selling point of the hotel as its essentially a business hotel but they want to offer customers exciting things to do once their work day is done as well as provide leisure visitors with added value. Our check in is quick and friendly and we’re shown to our room on the 20th floor which has breath-taking views of downtown and the Burj Khalifa. Other rooms have views of the Dubai Canal which is equally lovely. Each of the guest rooms and suites come with floor-toceiling windows, allowing natural light to flow through and makes said views even better. Again, the rooms are not like other hotels we’ve stayed in, they are spacious, funky but elegant with rich fabrics and beige accents. Besides the large and super comfy bed, there is a beautifully low-hanging copper pendant light which sets off the room along with Pablo Picasso’s famed camel sketch which has cleverly been reimagined and takes centre stage as a 3D iron sculpture above the bed. Super modern with a touch of Dubai. We love it. FOOD FOR DAYS As we love our food here at FACT, we enjoyed all the culinary delights that this hotel has to offer and certainly tried some of the most amazing dining options in the city. The gorgeous French farmhouse inspired restaurant Bleu Blanc and urban Italian themed BASTA! Are both concepts by Chef David 54

BASTA! is the perfect spot for modern Italian and has a fun and buzzing atmosphere. The hotel also has BHAR, from the Arabic word for spice, which offers Middle Eastern cuisine with a twist. The breakfasts here are excellent with a large range of cuisines on offer and daily made-to-order egg specials and freshly made juices. Morimoto, Japanese celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto’s 250-seat stunning restaurant is the real wow factor which has four outdoor terraces and a seriously cool bar serving up delicious cocktails all based on the Zodiacs of the Chinese Calendar. AWARD-WINNING WELLNESS If you do anything while staying here, take a trip to the Six Senses Spa at the hotel. The Six Senses Spa features six treatment suites and each is dedicated to a different sense, offering the perfect balance of calm and sensory experiences. The serene entrance features low lighting and timber décor then heads into the reception of the spa with lots of natural light and contemporary design enhanced by huge windows. The spa features a variety of holistic therapies, wellness activities and experiences such as hammam and sauna. We’d recommend one of the massages in the “TOUCH” therapy room which includes a pre treatment of the floatation pod (filled with 400kg of Epsom Salts) to really get you feeling relaxed for your massage. There is also a nail bar that provides complete hand and foot pampering and a yoga platform. Is there anything they didn’t think of? Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai is a unique property that has everything from cool, insta-worthy accommodation to brag-about food options and a spa that will leave you relaxed for days. I
t is always a pleasure for us at FACT to be offered the opportunity to test drive the latest that Porsche has to offer. A truly iconic brand, Porsche cars are famous for their exciting drivability and sense of style. Being handed the keys for the new 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS, we knew we were in for a treat and were most keen to flex our driving muscles. The Porsche Cayman originally went on the market in late 2005 and the brand has made countless improvements over the last 12 to 13 years, to perfect this model. But are these improvements enough to stand up to the likes of the Jaguar F-Type or the Audi TTS? Upon initial inspection, the love and attention put into the design and construction of the vehicle was immediately obvious and we could not wait to see all that the vehicle had to offer. The front end of the 718 features the new Sport Design apron that emphasises the vehicle’s sporty character. As is customary for GTS models, the front light clusters with the Bi-Xenon headlights are black-tinted and pleasing to the eye. The side profile is characterised by black GTS logos at the base of the doors and 20-inch wheels in a black satin finish. At the rear of the vehicle, the dark-tinted taillights, black logos, black rear apron and centrally positioned black tailpipes from the standard sports exhaust system, further intensify the sporty appearance and makes one want to reach for their camera. For a sports car of this size, it has a decent cargo capacity with storage spaces both under the hood and hatch. This makes the vehicle more plausible for everyday use. Sliding into the cabin area, class and comfort is what greeted us. The full leather sports seats are stock shaped and come complete with GTS logos on the headrests. They offer great support and comfortability at all speeds. The three spoke design steering wheel is wrapped in high quality leather and gives one a sense of full control. The centre console and armrests share the high quality leather finish and the overall look and feel of the cabin is what one would expect of a Porsche. The display consists of an analogue speedometer as well as another display on the right. Here one can change the display to navigation, music, smartphone integration and more. Enthusiasts with a passion for dynamic driving are assisted by the Porsche Track Precision App (PTPA), which enables one to automatically record, display and analyse driving data on a smartphone. A standard 7” touchscreen display is present on the centre console. We found the operating system to be extremely intuitive and responsive with clear graphics. When it comes to sports cars however, the truth is always told on the tarmac. As we put foot to pedal, the raspy sounding engine was music to our ears. The power output has been increased to 365 hp (269 kW) thanks to a newly developed air intake-duct and an optimised turbocharger for the 2.5-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine and believe us when we say, you can feel it! This GTS model has a maximum torque of 430 Nm, and when equipped with the PDK and Sport Chrono Package, can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds, achieving a top speed of 290 km/h! We were most relieved to feel how much control we had driving this car. The grip on the corners gave us a sense of driving

freedom as the vehicle hugged the road, never showing any signs of strain. The ride was smooth and powerful, just as one would expect from a Porsche. This new mid-engine Cayman is available with a manual six-speed transmission or optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). A range of features also come as standard, including the Sport Chrono Package, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear differential lock and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the ride height by ten millimetres, adding to the cornering control. Our conclusion: Porsche has once again produced a highquality, visually beautiful and exciting vehicle that can compete with all rivals in the segment. In fact, it may be the most fun of all to drive. ✤

MCLAREN’S AUTOMOTIVE AMBITIONS At Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018, luxury British sportscar and supercar maker McLaren Automotive announced its ambitious, wide-ranging business plan that will take the company to its 15th anniversary. Track25 is an evolution of the Track22 plan that was first launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016 and the updated plan now includes significant new milestones. Track25 sets out a clear roadmap for future vehicles, production and technology that will allow the brand to continue to position itself as a major global player in the sportscar and supercar market. McLaren is committed to ensuring that its sportscar and supercar range will be hybrid within seven years. The company will also continue its drive to win the new supercar ‘weight race’ by ensuring, as it does today, that each of its products is the lightest in their segment. This complements a £50m investment in developing and manufacturing the future of light weighting technology with the soon to-open McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC). Once fully operational, the MCTC will mean around 57 per cent of vehicle content by value will be UK sourced. ✤ fact magazine

HYBRID STYLE The game-changing Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is the crossover of laptops that any tech fiend on-the-go needs in their life…
F
rom endless Netflix sessions to keeping up with work deadlines, our trusty laptops have become one of the most important gadgets in our lives. Whether you’re looking for a simple budget PC, a gaming machine or a productivity powerhouse, finding the perfect laptop for your needs can be tricky. Making your selection process a little bit easier, we decided to take the new Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 for a spin. Setting a new bar for hybrid laptops, Dell has completely reinvented the Dell XPS 15 into a sleek 2-in-1 laptop. Perfect for people who need power and portability, the laptop offers build quality, great attention to detail as well as flexibility for a truly highend experience. Decked up in a similar design as its predecessors, the laptop offers one of the most comfortable palm rests ever along with some really excellent build quality. While the Dell XPS 2-in-1 isn’t quite a lightweight, the 360-degree hinge allows you to use the XPS in an easel or movie-watching mode. But what impressed us the most is the device’s selection of ports and the brand-new keyboard maglev technology. The maglev keyboard is more rigid and requires a firmer press but it is still very enjoyable to type on. When it comes to performance, the new Intel-meets-
AMD processor is a force to be reckoned with. Achieving better CineBench and GeekBench scores than any of its rivals, the laptop possesses an impressive new sensor hub that helps liberally boost frequencies. The sensor hub works along with the software to help monitor the device’s cooling and power for an automatic performance boost. No more overheating! The screen on the laptop measures 15.6 inches with thin bezels and supports Dell’s included stylus. It offers gorgeous bright colours with tons of pop and contrast without a lot of image sharpening. While the included pen has 4,096 levels of pressure as well as good weighing and draws with precision. If a good battery life is what you’re after, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 may not be a good option. While Dell claims the laptop can last up to 15 hours, the XPS 2-in1 definitely runs on the shorter side of the available battery life. The ‘smallest and thinnest 2-in-1 device of its size’, the laptop manages to get most things right. One of the most innovatively engineered and powerful laptops in the market right now, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 definitely deserves your attention. We won’t be putting it down anytime soon! ✤ fact magazine

O
ffering a tantalising variety of Indian flavours and dishes, Jashan combines mouthwatering cuisine with an opulent atmosphere for a truly exceptional culinary expedition. After being ushered into the gorgeous restaurant by some of the friendliest staff, it was time to tuck into some heavenly Indian fare! A true traditional delicacy, our first dish of Himayati Shorba is what comfort food dreams are made of. The fragrant soup was delightfully rich yet light on the palate, while the lamb chunks were perfectly seasoned and tender. As this flavourful concoction prepared us for what was to come, we couldn’t help but sway to the tunes of the mesmerising live band. A stunning display of old and new Bollywood hits, the extremely talented band is the perfect addition to our delectable meal. Next up in starters, the Vegetarian and NonVegetarian Kebab Platters were an instant hit for everyone at the table. Featuring delicious traditional favourites including Dahi Ke Kebab and Paneer Peshawari as well as Jhinga Kali Mirch and Seekh Kebab, these starters are perfect for anyone looking for a variety. We just couldn’t get enough! Showcasing the culinary spirit of Lucknowi, Awadhi and Hydrabadi cuisine, the restaurant offers an extensive variety of traditional recipes that reflect the diversity of the region. The ultimate local delicacy, our next dish of Dhaba Murgh is a delightful explosion of flavours. The chicken is done just right, while the aromatic gravy is packed full of palate-pleasing tastes and textures. Hands down one of the best curries we’ve had in Bahrain! Apart from a fixed menu featuring a number of intricately prepared dishes, guests also get to indulge in a new special every day. Our special for the day was Sunehari Nalli and it took our taste buds for a ride. A hearty medley of cashew nut paste, saffron, tomato puree and lamb shanks, the dish is bursting with amazing aromas. From the beautiful presentation to its unparalleled taste, this dish ticks all the right boxes! We were then invited to watch our meal being prepared by the speciality chefs in their glass enclosed show kitchen. The fun, interactive kitchen element definitely brings the whole culinary experience together and feels more alive. While biryanis have always been a constant presence on Indian menus, nothing had prepared us for this level of deliciousness! Nalli Gosht Biryani, a decadent pairing of basmati rice with lamb, the dish is all you could ever want from a biryani. The rice is perfectly cooked and oozes delectable flavour, while the lamb is so succulent that it falls off the bone, flawlessly. Why eat anything else? 78

The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa continues to push the envelope with every bite. And at the top of this list is renowned Japanese restaurant Sato, playfully mixing tradition with tastes that are simply inspirational.

S
ato isn’t your typical Japanese. Yes it is adorned with the fitout of black lacquered tables and chairs, white walls and cool pottery plates that you’d expect of such a culinary premise, plus a range of ancient-looking hibachi table-top grills for live cooking, yet, no-one could have prepared us for the gastronomic delight that we were about to encounter. Very authentic, extra promising. We were spoilt for choice from the second we opened up the vast menu but the kimonodressed waitresses were on hand to guide us through a selection of the various dishes in an informative yet unobtrusive manner. We decided to quench our thirst with their signature ‘Melon Ball Mocktail’ that proved a strong contender for becoming a new coveted choice of beverage. We were told that Sous Chef Kevin De Guzman was going to be looking after our taste buds and since he has been mentored by two star Michelin Chef Kazuo Takagi, well, we knew we were in reputable hands, especially since he received advanced training and knowledge from such an integral figure in the culinary industry. Now, of course we decided to indulge ourselves with probably the most typical Japanese cuisine appetiser - Prawn Tempura, but, like everything we sampled at Sato - nothing is ‘typical’. Tempura batter is normally very plain, but, the marriage of green tea powder and kosher salt infused into the dish alongside an oregano leaf and lotus root allowed for the perfect counterbalance integral with Japanese culture. Radish and ginger with tempura sauce (sweet non alcoholic wine, fish stock and soy) produces an alternative dimension to this dish. Bluefin Tuna made a star studded appearance at our table. Imported fresh from Malta this is the only restaurant in Bahrain who is providing such a showstopper. We devoured the sashimi and its seaweed support act. Now, this truly something that you need to experience for yourself. Chef Kevin states that there is one formula devised of three factors to ensure for the perfect dish; balance of taste, technique and timing. Mahotsukai Maki is what dreams are made of or rather should! Is it any wonder that this dish literally translates itself as ‘irresistible’ in english? This is served hot and truly plays homage to the whole melt-in-your-mouth concept consisting of salmon belly, avocado, crab stick and cream cheese. The burst of flavours is incredulous

BALANCE, TECHNIQUE, AND TIMING. 3 FACTORS I AM CONSIDERING TO CREATE A PERFECT DISH.” - CHEF KEVIN DE GUZMAN”
with the added naughtiness of it being deep fried and obscure on account of it coining itself as reverse maki as the rice is held captive inside the walls of the crisp salmon belly. Another hot favourite on said rotanial menu is the slow cooked beef ribs which has been heavily influence through the art of ‘street food’ in Japan. Chef Kevin studied the contrast of beef with an abundance of different sauces until it could give justice to said culinary practice and we will be forever grateful. An exquisite dish. The sushi platter made us literally gasp. It was beautiful. We were told that all of the unique toppings were to balance the flavour as it adapts the flavour of the fish and the sushi rice - to stop it being sour or indeed too sweet. Cleansing your palate with a slice of ginger is highly advisable to really honour the flavours transponding from each myriad of sushi - no need for wasabi as the sushi is already brimming with a collection of flavours. Fresh cucumber skin provided a mild contrast with the tuna, whereas the hammour partnered itself with the spring onion perfectly. The salmon paired itself with the infamous wasabi leaf. The red snapper proved an absolute game-changer with its skin intact was kept since it adds additional taste on account that it is a little fatty - for all the right reasons. The octopus was accompanied by yuzu which a native japanese citrus fruit which was executed perfectly. Now, we all speak about dedication which is none more apparent then that of Chef Kevin who found himself in hospital. This was on account of him knowing full well that he was allergic to squid and octopus, yet, still tasted it to appease his mentor to fully immerse himself in the knowledge of what was leaving the kitchen. He literally put his life on the line for his passion for japanese cuisine. Now, if that isn’t dedication to your job I don’t know what is. ✤

ncorporating Italy’s vibrant culture with effortless cooking, Cucina Italiana has always been everybody’s go-to for bona fide Italian cuisine. Representing an unshakable passion for the Italian lifestyle, the restaurant is all about authentic cuisine and beautiful décor that takes you back to the streets of rustic Italy. Prepared with only the freshest and finest hand-picked ingredients, Cucina Italiana takes great pride in delivering the highest quality dishes while maintaining traditional Italian cooking techniques. As we made our way into the laid-back restaurant, we were immediately in awe of the immense attention to detail as well as their genuine Italian passion. From their ever-attentive staff to the comfy and casual dining setting, we felt right at home. We started our delectable Italian culinary expedition with Zuppa Di Marre. A rich and delightful speciality seafood soup, the dish is brimming with incredible flavour while being super light on the taste buds - comfort food at its finest! With all the dishes made from fresh vegetables, succulent meat, handtossed dough and superior quality tomato sauces, the restaurant has always been a FACT favourite. Our next dish of Bresaola Con Rucola E Parmigiano is light and delicately flavoured. Thin sliced beef bresaola served with arugula salad and parmesan cheese splashed with extra virgin oil and lemon juice, it was the perfect start to a hearty meal. Delivering the freshest ingredients in a chilled-out setting, Cucina Italiana is all about giving its diners an authentic Italian experience. Our next dish of Penne Alla Norma truly reinforced that belief. Tube penne pasta with aubergines and cow milk mozzarella, cherry tomato in tomato sauce with a touch of basil pesto, it had us drooling from the get-go. A medley of melt-in-yourmouth flavours, the pasta is perfectly cooked, while the cow milk mozzarella and tomato sauce give the dish just the right amount of kick. Leaving us smitten from the very first bite, Ravioli Di Pesce is everything you could ever want from pasta. Spinach ravioli filled with hammour and prawns cooked together with creamy shrimp sauce and served with grilled prawn and mixed bell peppers, the dish is an intricate mix of delectable flavours.

The hammour and prawns are cooked just right and paired beautifully, while the creamy shrimp sauce truly brings the dish together. Since Italian cuisine is never complete without pizza, our next dish of Rustica 11” had our knives and forks at the ready. Featuring fresh lamb sausages, boiled mashed potatoes, mozzarella, tomato sauce and fresh rosemary, the pizza is unlike anything we have had on the island. An unparalleled combination of versatile ingredients, this delicacy is a definite must try.

It was finally time for the sweet finale! An Italian classic, our dessert for the day was all kinds of delicious. There was definitely some fighting for the last bite! While you’re there, do not forget to try their vibrant and refreshing range of cocktails and mocktails. We highly recommend their Bersagliere mocktail. A berrylicious concoction of mixed fresh strawberries and cranberry juice topped with icy cold soda, this drink is all you need to cool you down on a hot day! Back Seat Trainer Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.
Just like a back-seat driver, a back-seat trainer is simply annoying. So, what do I mean by back seat trainer? This is someone that gives unwanted advice to my clients which they then pass onto me. I can honestly say with hand on heart that this advice is for want of a better word 100% RUBBISH. I know that it comes from a well-meaning place but watching fitness videos on YouTube, watching your favourite celebrities’ workout show or reading a fitness magazine does NOT make you a fitness expert. Never give second hand unsolicited advice to your trainer as it can be deemed as disrespectful. Your trainer has taken their time to put together a workout plan for you, so for you to turn around and say “my husband, best friend or cat said you should do this you should do that” is just disrespectful. If this is the case, then they should be the person trying to help you reach your fitness goals. Your trainer doesn’t want to hear half-baked magazine quotes that say “you should eat this, or you should eat that” when you haven’t looked at the meal plan your trainer took time putting together for you. Remember you hired a trainer for a reason – for their knowledge and to help you achieve your health and fitness goals in a safe an effective way, so you will not injure yourself. Keep the relationship with your trainer sweet, listen to them, and reap the results. ✤

Staycation Goals Georgina Jennsen is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. a social media influencer who loves all things luxurious.
If you had to choose a staycation destination from one of Bahrain’s beautiful 5-star hotels, which one would it be? It’s a tough choice, right? Well I’m about to make deciding even more difficult - read on to find out what I love most about each of our local premier properties. Curb appeal - the hotel that packs the biggest punch in terms of initial impressions, is the Jumeirah Royal Saray. It’s the super high-gloss driveway tiles that do it. Somewhat treacherous if you’re teetering along in towering heels, but gorgeous nonetheless. The smartly-dressed team of porters that converge on your car upon arrival is also pretty swish, as are the white-washed marble vistas into the lobby and beyond. Lobby - the Four Seasons wins this one, with its stunning horse sculpture, orchard of olive trees and sumptuous private nooks that surround the central space. Don’t forget to head up to the 50th floor for sundowners in the Moroccan-style Blue Moon Lounge. Spa - oooh this one’s tough, but I’m going with the Sofitel’s sumptuous Thalassa Spa. Dinner - schedule your staycation dates in advance to coincide with a deliciously decadent Domain Bahrain Masters Dinner, and enjoy a glass for me. Bed - this one’s easy. I’d choose to rest my weary head on one of the RIDICULOUSLY large beds in a Ritz Carlton villa. With a living space almost large enough to move into, and your own private pool, these colonial-style spaces offer the ultimate overnight experience. Sweet dreams! Xx ✤

After calling Bahrain home for over two years, I have come to realise that the island shares a very special relationship with food. From its mouthwatering traditional delicacies to exotic fusion dishes, food is a central and ever-evolving part of Bahrain’s cultural scene. While the country has successfully adapted and embraced various cultural influences, traditional Bahraini fare still reigns supreme. A true reflection of the island nation’s cross-cultural social milieu, Bahrain’s foodie scene goes above and beyond to satiate all your cravings. Offering everything from exquisite fine dining to authentic street food, there is certainly no dearth of impeccable cuisine. In this golden age of food, the island is certainly winning with its gorgeous Insta-worthy dishes as well as endless culinary options. From some yummy plant-based choices and pre-made convenience food to fast food chains from around the globe, Bahrain ensures the excitement of your taste buds at all times. Be it the glorious Iftar and Ghabga celebrations or the amazing annual Bahrain Food Festival, the island takes its food very seriously. Featuring various culinary influences including Indian, Persian and European, Bahrain’s cuisine is bound to entice even the pickiest of pallets. Hi Sumaya! Share with us three things that make working at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain a complete joy… I honestly enjoy hosting events and meeting guests, media partners, editors and bloggers. Currently, I’m working on my hotel renovation plan and on branding the outlets. I enjoy executing the marketing plan and activities and adding my personal touch to the hotel. This hotel is like a home to me, and I love the food served, especially the Friday brunch. I guess most people would see me enjoying it and they’d be right as I do!

Where is your favourite cultural hotspot in Bahrain and why? Bab al Bahrain is my favourite historical spot in Bahrain. I enjoy the souq and roaming around that area. It is a great place especially if you are seeking tailored suits and buying beautiful Bahraini gold jewellery in the Gold City, which is right besides it.
What are some of your professional goals with the hotel for the rest of 2018? To execute the marketing and PR plan of the hotel during the renovation and to position the hotel amongst the top-ranked properties in Bahrain with elegant, upscale and state-ofthe-art facilities. I’d like to maintain the reputation of our Friday brunch and themed nights too. According to recognised hospitality software, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain offers the best 5-star hospitality service and is one of the few hotels awarded with the Green Globe certificate, so I’d like to keep this up as well.
A Better Get-Together Come together for summer swim and restorative relaxation at The Westin City Centre Bahrain. Enjoy day-use of the swimming pool facility at a discounted price. Call 17171122 for more information or visit www.heavenlyspabahrain.com
