“
"It's the most wonderful time of the year." - Edward Pola and George Wyle
FACT Magazine Bahrain Edition • DECEMBER 2020 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 03
DIRECTOR OMAR SHAHEEN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES PUBLISHER RAMI KHALIL (rami@fact-magazine.com) EDITOR SAMIA QAIYUM (samia@fact-magazine.com)
I
t's the most wonderful time of the year, yes, but it arrives after months and months that can best be described as 'complicated'. We've never needed a little holiday cheer more than right now. Here in Bahrain, we're lucky in the sense that life is slowly returning to normal(ish). There's Independence Day celebrations, Christmas brunches, and New Year's festivities to look forward to – all of which you'll find in the pages ahead. But before we get ahead of ourselves, you have a gift list to tackle, right? We know you have no desire to dodge past crowds in a crowded mall, so we've curated a gift guide (p14) that covers heaps of picks that can be bought online – we've even categorised it by personality type. Elsewhere in the issue, we (virtually) travel to Germany to attend #NEXTGen 2020 (p54), explore an extended-stay hotel with a side of soul (p34), celebrate the return of a beloved Friday brunch (p64), and take the 2021 Audi Q7 out for a spin (p48). And because FACT Bahrain is feeling particularly generous, we're giving away 25 days worth of festive treats (p32) that span food dining, beauty, hospitality, and more. As for any parents amongst us? We tried and tested two Christmas-centric apps (p44) to keep any restless children entertained as 2020 draws to a close. Here's to a wonderful 2021 ahead!

BRAGGING RIGHTS Consistency and hard work pays off for the original five-star hotel of Bahrain. Guess what? One of our very own has just been awarded in recognition of its sustained commitment to excellence in the luxury hospitality industry: The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. Known for its incredible foyer, panoramic views, exclusive services, and beloved eateries, the longstanding icon of luxury was recently presented a 2020 World Luxury Hotel Award in the Luxury Gourmet Hotel category for the MENA region. Officially sponsored by France 24, the awards stand as a great achievement – even for those that have only been nominated! But here at FACT Bahrain, we're well-versed on this outstanding property. at this year's edition, Gulf Hotel has been a pinnacle of great achievements since its opening back in 1969. Undoubtedly one of the island’s largest hotels, it has been known for its wide variety of facilities and services that cater to both business and leisure travellers throughout the year. After recently undergoing an extensive refurbishment, Gulf Hotel continues to uphold its cosmopolitan look and feel, thus making it a firm favourite all over again. Not only does the World Luxury Hotel Award give recognition to the hotel for its standards, but it also works directly to encourage and stimulate the growth of the hotel, making us – its loyal patrons – even more excited for what’s to come! FACT Bahrain extends its congratulations to the hotel on its well-deserved success. ✤

LA DOLCE VITA Casa Nespresso's new range is the perfect accompaniment to all those warm and fuzzy moments we spend with loved ones over the holidays. The holidays are all about bringing people together, so what better way to bond than with coffee influenced by Italian traditions and sweet treats? Launched by Nespresso, just in time for the festive season, the limited-edition Variations Italia range looks to the likes of hazelnut cake, pecan biscotti, and even amaretti for inspiration. Between four flavoured coffees, two non-flavoured coffees, and a range of accessories, Nespresso promises to warm and delight as the days get chilly. There's Variations Italia Amaretti Flavour that layers almond and vanilla notes with South American Arabica’s lingering cereal character, giving it a zesty fruit note, while the Variations Italia Torta di Nocciole Flavour fills out that cereal taste with notes of toasted hazelnut and vanilla. The Variations Italia Pecan Biscotti Flavour, meanwhile, is based on twice-baked biscotti. It marries a velvety texture and nutty notes from Latin American and African Arabicas, creating a smooth cereal taste. Also noteworthy is Variations Italia Amaretti Flavour – coffee connoisseurs can expect to experience cereal notes and a smooth texture when sipping this variety. Layered onto this Latin American and African 12

Arabica base is the Amaretti flavour, with its warming notes of bittersweet almond and vanilla. Nespresso thinks this marriage of sweetness and a rich nuttiness is the perfect complement to the company of loved ones. And we agree. As for those unwilling to experiment with different coffee flavours? Firstly, but why? Secondly, Nespresso has also released coffee and homeware accessories that elevate both your regular cup of joe and make for delightful gifts this holiday season. Whether it's an advent calendar, a luxe take on a coffee cup set, a centrepiece bowl co-created by iconic design brand Alessi, a high-tech travel mug, or even a candle scented with hints of coffee, cocoa, and lingering vanilla, these are no ordinary extras. Feeling the festive spirit? There’s plenty more where that came from in the pages ahead. ✤

Home Suite Home On a quest for an extended-stay hotel with a side of soul, FACT's Samia Qaiyum checks into Elite Seef Residence & Hotel.

L
et me be the first to tell you this: moving to a new country in the midst of a pandemic is downright daunting. But as I've quickly learnt, the friendly faces at Elite Seef Residence & Hotel help compensate for the absence of friends and family, my countless questions about life in Bahrain, and that general sensation of always feeling lost. Yes, the property hosts guests who are just in town for the weekend, but it's especially popular amongst those in need of a medium- to long-term stay. Here's why.
Need to Know Elite Seef is a part of leading hospitality group Elite Hospitality, which boasts five different properties across Bahrain, each with a distinct personality of its own. Whether you're looking to check in for a few days or a couple of years, there's a hotel on offer. Oh, and there's something to suit just about every budget. Enrol in the Elite Rewards membership programme, and you can enjoy member benefits like priority check-in, late checkout, and deluxe room amenities. My home away from home offers everything from spacious studios to three-bedroom suites, each fully equipped – but more on that later.
Location, Location, Location The all-suite property is centrally located in Manama, so you're a walk away from trendy cafés at The Courtyard and a handful of fantastic restaurants at The Flagship. Both Seef Mall and Al Aali Mall are a six-minute drive away, while Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre, Seef Mall, and the stunning Qal'at al-Bahrain – a.k.a. – Bahrain Fort – are all in the vicinity. 36
fact magazine
There's also a complimentary shuttle bus service between the hotel and City Centre Bahrain. Driving? There’s free on-site parking at Elite Seef.
Get a Room So back to those fully equipped suites, which make for the perfect alternative to hotel rooms if a little more independence is what you're after. Personally, I'd rather cook on a frequent basis and have a place to entertain friends, so the well-stocked modular kitchen (complete with pots, pans, cutlery, crockery, and all manner of appliances) suits me perfectly. As for the Indesit washer-dryer and Sharp microwave oven? Both there to help the time-pressed guest, like me. Not only does the spacious living room provide ample space to work when I need a break from the sizable dining table or the writing desk in my bedroom, but it also doubles as my personal yoga studio when the urge strikes. It also hosts the usual suspects: a home theatre system with surround sound, in-house DVD channels, and satellite television with a wide choice of channels. Yet, a stay at Elite Seef brings with it the conveniences of a conventional hotel. There's daily housekeeping, but if you hang up the "Do Not Disturb" sign, you'll be asked if you're in need of tissue paper, bathroom amenities, or anything else. It really is the little details and level of attention that make this property so special. The blackout curtains and absurdly comfortable bed guarantee a great night's sleep, a discount is offered every time you do your laundry in bulk, and you'll never struggle with the speed nor quality of the WiFi. Meanwhile, the 24hour room service ensures that your whims are catered to almost

instantly. In the past week alone, my empty water dispenser was replaced in a matter of minutes, and a box of three different types of sugar showed up when I requested a few sachets.
Staying Put In an era when staying home is considering the equivalent of saving lives, indulging in room service is more justifiable than ever before. I've already taken several cracks at the extensive in-room dining menu, and have a few favourites at this point. The Mixed Grill brings together sheesh taouk, lamb kabab, lamb chops, and beef tikka that is marinated and charcoal-grilled to perfection. Pair this platter with one of the many, many mezze options – the garlicky Moutabal and bite-size Spinach Fatayer are winners – and you have a feast fit for a king in the comfort of your own room. But if you like your meals with a hint of spice, the tender and aromatic Tandoori Chicken is a must-try.
Venturing Out Cabin fever feels like a very real thing in 2020, but luckily, the various public spaces across Elite Seef offer plenty to do. The bright and airy Kinetix health club is located on the top floor (as is the sauna and rooftop sundeck), boasting both views of Seef and the latest Technogym equipment. Not only are there personal trainers available in case you need a helping hand, but it's also open till midnight, catering to those who tend to work late. And five floors below awaits one of the property's most popular features: the temperature-controlled swimming pool, which spans 19 metres in length. It’s always inviting owing to the towering palm trees and loungers aplenty in the vicinity, especially now, with the return of cooler weather. There’s even a
dedicated children’s pool so that everyone’s taken care of.
Here and Now Open for all-day dining is Mario’s Restaurant where, prepandemic, international dishes were served across various formats – à la carte and buffet included. Today, as traditional brunches are still off-limits, there’s a diverse menu to choose from. As for the dishes that deserve a special mention? The Chickamole is one of the more interesting salads I’ve had in a while as the addition of nuts and pomegranate seeds is both delicious and unexpected, while the Sesame Prawn Toast features cheese, which is always a welcome addition to any classic. Oh, and a shout-out goes to the Elite Club Sandwich – because is a hotel stay even complete without giving its signature club sandwich a try? The menu at Mario’s also boasts an entire section dedicated to Asian flavours spanning South Asia and Southeast Asia. Win-win. Also on the first floor is the recently opened Captain Jack’s, a poolside bar offering an extensive choice of signature drinks alongside shisha and finger bites. On the menu? Classics like jacket potatoes, chicken wings, onions rings, and bruschetta as well as lesser-seen options such as Coconut Shrimps and Crusty Corn Dogs. The indoor lounge screams laidback, courtesy of its tiki décor details – think: coconut shell panels, seashell curtains, rope accents, pirate figurines, and even a handcrafted paddle. Bonus: Captain Jack’s is open until 2am, making it the perfect casual spot at which to catch up with friends. Step outside, and the poolside seating has the added attraction of live screenings of football matches on a LED screen that clocks in at a whopping five by six metres.

• STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT
With a Smile Between the concierge service that can assist with everything from car rental to travel services and the 24-hour front desk, the guest comes first at Elite Seef. I even spotted a little table tent with a QR Code in my living room. Scan it, and it will take you to a customer-satisfaction survey that allows you to comment on your suite’s size, level of cleanliness, and more. Most hotels promise customer service with a smile, yet few deliver quite like Elite Seef. On a Zoom call for work? Someone will bring your food delivery up to your room. In need of a water bottle? Four will show up at your doorstep in no time. Dealing with a noisy neighbour or lost package? They'll step in to help – always with a smile (behind a face mask, of course). Also noteworthy is the fact that the pandemic has changed the way we view a lot of things, and what we look for in a hotel is no exception. Gone are the days of us prioritising stylish, Insta-worthy properties that don't offer much substance. Now, I look around at the many safety measures in place in my surroundings, and feel a sense of relief. Temperature checks take place upon entry, a plexiglass barrier keeps both guests and front desk staff safe, stickers in the lifts remind guests to keep a safe distance, and hand sanitiser is available at every turn. It's no wonder that the hotel has won countless awards in the past, most recently the 2020 Travelers’ Choice award by Tripadvisor. Here's to many more. ✤

BIG SCREEN Social Distance Need to Know:
A Netflix anthology series filmed entirely in isolation and capturing quarantine life to a T.
Creator: Hilary Weisman Graham Cast: Oscar Nuñez, Danielle Brooks, Heather Burns, Mike Colter
Why is It Worth Watching?
The pandemic made pants, daily showers, and face-toface meetings optional, but harsh realities such as single parenting, funerals, and break-ups didn't go anywhere. Enter: Social Distance, an anthology series that captures the unprecedented nuances of quarantine life. We see a working mother watching over her young daughter via webcam, a newly single barber attempting to stay sober with the help of an online support system, a family gathering to grieve the loss of a loved one over Zoom, and a frazzled man tending to his sick wife though regular check-ins on FaceTime. Behind Social Distance is a handful of familiar names like Hilary Weisman Graham, Jenji Kohan, and Danielle Brooks – all of Orange Is the New Black fame – which explains the show's ability to see both the hilarity and darkness of social isolation. Admittedly, a commentary on the pandemic feels premature and some plotlines are weaker than others, but what remains impressive is the fact that all eight episodes were produced remotely.

Holidate Need to Know:
Sick of being alone on holidays, two single people make a pact to navigate family gatherings as each other’s platonic plus-one.
Director: John Whitesell Cast: Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey, Kristin
Chenoweth, Jessica Capshaw
Why is It Worth Watching?
It feels like the holiday season rolled around a little earlier this year thanks to the release of Netflix original Holidate – not that we’re
complaining. Yes, it’s a typical romcom (read: predictable and unrealistic), but it makes for a decent 103-minute escape. The story revolves around Sloane and her family's constant pressure for her to find right person and, after yet another nightmarish Christmas at home, she crosses paths with the solution: Jackson. Bonding over their mutual hatred for being single over major holidays, they agree to become each other’s “holidate” sans romance. The movie makes stops at every holiday ranging from New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day to Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, and more until we’re back at Christmas. And despite the main characters being adamant that they’re not looking to settle down, they end up finding just what they need (spoiler alert: each other). Holidate may be formulaic in nature, but all those awkward family moments make it worth watching.

ON THE RECORD
FULLY BOOKED
MEMOIR
A Promised Land By Barack Obama
POP
INDIE
Confetti By Little Mix
Wilted By Paris Jackson
This all-girl musical sensation gave us a teaser of what’s next with an explosion of confetti at the end of the "Wasabi" music video back in 2018 – and we’ve been waiting ever since. Two years later, it’s here: their sixth studio album, Confetti. Little Mix has a new record label and, apparently, a new sound. Their new R&B/ pop vibe features the best of both worlds, with feisty musings on everything from relationships to gender equality based upon their newfound creative liberty and control. For example, the track “Sweet Melody” serves us real talk on toxic relationships and warns fellow females with words like, "Every time we go dancing, I see his straying eyes/Gave him too many chances, push my gears too many times." Their new sound is a fierce, mercifully coherent statement and anthem of independence. And we approve.
Stepping away from her father’s footsteps, Paris Jackson makes her musical debut with haunting vocals, gleaming electric-guitar licks, and a sultry fire in her album. Without a single Michael-esque moment, she steps into her own sound and has us hooked onto her languid voice. Paris co-wrote nine of the 11 tracks – writing the remaining herself – with Andy Hull, leader of indie-rock band Manchester Orchestra. Incidentally, Andy also supplied vocals on the song “Eyelids”. The alluring and moody sounds on this album let you lose yourself in its alt-folk atmosphere, one track seamlessly leading to the next. The album offers intimate songs from ballads to spoken word that will fit you like your favourite sweater on a chilly winter evening. The album is far from sunny; it’s a compilation of romantic tragedy delivered with sweet vocal perfection.

The memoir promises a detailed glimpse into his personal and professional life before, during, and after the White House, so expect life stories, history-making moments, and inspiration aplenty.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Letter to Santa
Join the grouchy Grinch from the perennial Christmas classic in this interactive book app that’s perfect for parents this time for year. Playfully bringing the Dr. Seuss character to life, it’s packed with animations, narration, sound effects, and background music, thereby creating a wonderfully atmospheric educational experience for children. They can tap and drag to find surprises throughout the online book and find hidden stars to reveal fun activities. The app also gives multiple options for reading. You may read yourself, read along with narration, or enjoy auto play – all while the Grinch attempts to steal Christmas.
Today’s children are practically born with iPads in their hands, so why not also digitise their experience of writing a letter to Santa Claus? Thanks to this user-friendly app, your kids can write letters to the North Pole, detailing if they’ve been naughty or nice and what they’d like for Christmas. The best part? Actual replies from the man in red himself. The app also has step-by-step instructions for children, making it easy for them to construct their letters, regardless of age. Parents can then compose Santa’s reply themselves or let the app send an automated one. WATCH, LISTEN, LEARN Huawei has launched not one, but two gadgets that have caught our eye just in time for the holiday season. Pair them together for the ultimate gift to the technophile in your life.
A
lways one to keep techies on their toes, Huawei has officially launched its Watch GT 2 Pro. Available in both Classic and Sport editions, this stylish wrist piece comes equipped with a warranty card, quick start guide, USB-C charging cable, and magnetic dock. There’s also a rubber strap for both editions, and an extra leather strap for the Classic. The high-end design of the GT 2 Pro incudes a lightweight titanium body, a scratchproof sapphire glass surface, and a ceramic finish on the back. The design of this impressive device is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also allows for it to go up to 50 metres underwater. In order to connect to your smartwatch, merely download the Huawei Health app from either Google Play, Apple App Store, or HUAWEI AppGallery on your smartphone. Log in with your Huawei ID, go to devices, hit add, and select GT 2 Pro. Et voilà – you will have full notification support and can select which apps are allowed to notify you through your new smartwatch. The GT 2 Pro houses a 1.39-inch AMOLED display that is super crisp, thanks to its 454x454 pixel resolution. The colours are vibrant, and the text is very clear. There is an assortment of 46

standard watch screens to select from, and around 200 extra options waiting to be downloaded from the Huawei Health app. A built-in microphone and speaker enable you to make calls on the GT 2 Pro. Further gadget highlights include updated fitness tracking features that support over 100 types of exercise and an updated, more power-efficient sensor that ensures heart monitoring is now more accurate than it was with the original GT 2. This watch not only monitors your blood oxygen levels, but also your sleep patterns and stress levels – how 2020 of it! The Route Back feature is another useful attribute of this smartwatch, helping you to retrace your steps should you lose your bearings. You can also store around 500 songs on the device if you’d like to leave your phone at home. Other useful outdoor features include a compass and a barometer that can warn you of any impending severe weather. Perhaps the best feature? Its unequalled battery life, which allows you to use the watch for 10 to 14 days between charges. When it’s time to recharge, place the device on the provided dock or use a new Huawei smartphone that supports reverse wireless charging. A marked improvement on its predecessor, the sleek new GT 2 Pro is officially our frontrunner in the smartwatch market.

B
u t there’s more. Huawei has also launched the world’s first intelligent dynamic noise-cancelling earphones: the FreeBuds Pro. Since their release into the market, they have been met with positive reviews. And for good reason. The FreeBuds Pro have smaller stems than their predecessor – the FreeBuds 3 – and sport a boxy design that is unique when compared to the curvier shapes of their competitors. Most significant is their ergonomic design, which allows for them to be worn for long periods of time without causing any discomfort. Combined with the selection of three different sizes of silicone tips, this ensures that your FreeBuds will stay firmly in place – even during moderate exercise. As for how this level of comfort and convenience was achieved? Huawei’s Audio Lab collected and analysed ear canal data from over 1,000 real users across the globe. Pairing these earphones with your smartphone is very straightforward. Simply flip the lid of the earphone case open and hold down the button on the side. The light inside will begin to flash white, which will then allow you to pair them with your smartphone through the Bluetooth menu. The connectivity is both stable and strong, even when you venture a fair distance away from your phone. On the outer edge of the stems is a force centre that allows you to control all media and phone calls with a series of squeezes and swipes. For example, one quick squeeze pauses your music, and one more resumes it again. A doublesqueeze skips forward a music track, while a triple-squeeze skips back a track. Swiping your finger up or down the stem raises or decreases the volume – admittedly, this takes a little getting used to, but it’s a good system that works effectively. The sound quality of the Freebuds Pro is fantastic, with great clarity and sound stabilisation. In fact, they boast the best noise cancellation on the market, neutralising up to 40 decibels of sound as a result of Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation Technology that detects out-of-ear and in-ear residual noise. Also designed to read their surroundings, they recognise ambient sounds intelligently and switch noise-cancellation mode accordingly. Noteworthy is the
unique Voice Mode that reduces ambient sounds to make human voices stand out, which means you’ll never miss an airport announcement again. You can make the most of your FreeBuds Pro with the HUAWEI AI Life app – just a few taps and you can choose from different noise-control modes, track their location, and more. Like the aforementioned GT 2 Pro, the Freebuds Pro’s battery life is also very impressive, with Huawei claiming you will get up to 30 hours of battery life between the earbuds and the case. Available in Carbon Black, Silver Frost, and Ceramic White, the new Huawei Freebuds Pro are sure to impress all those lucky enough to purchase a pair. ✤

W
e at FACT love all things Audi and, yet, we have not had the privilege of test driving one of this celebrated brand’s creations in the past. Fortunately, thanks to the great team at Audi Centre Bahrain, this changed as we were recently offered the opportunity to meticulously inspect and test drive the new Audi Q7 – an offer we readily accepted. As soon as the Q7 came into view, we were struck by the robust yet effortlessly stylish design of the exterior. This luxury, midsize SUV has a large octagon-shaped Singleframe with six upright slats that delivers a powerful-looking framework. From the front, both the polygon grille and blade in the newly designed front bumper add to the aggressive look of the car, whilst the optional HD Matrix LED technology headlights, with Audi laser light, amplify its width. The two-part, side-air inlets underscore its ground clearance that, in turn hint at its off-road capabilities. At the flanks, the Q7 has a lifted hatchback look with large wheel fenders housing the standard 19-inch wheels. At the rear, a spoiler, shark fin antenna, LED taillights, a striking aluminium strip, and accentuated underbody protection all contribute towards the modern and classy look of this SUV. The Q7 is available in both a seven-seater and five-seater versions. Slipping inside the seven-seater model, we were immediately struck by the ample space on offer. This – combined with the use of high-quality materials throughout the vehicle and the optional four-zone climate control – ensures a very pleasant interior experience. The leather-wrap steering wheel looks great and feels extremely comfortable in hand. The leather upholstery comes as standard, and there is plenty of legroom in the front two rows of seating. The legroom in the third row is a little tighter, but fortunately, you are able to shift the second row forward to accommodate larger individuals. With a host of storage compartments throughout the vehicle and a generous cargo area, you will not have difficulty in storing all necessary goods. In fact, the five-seater version offers between 865 and 2050 litres of capacity, the latter with the rear seats folded down. This can be achieved through electronic switches located in the boot. All Q7s come with a handsfree power liftgate and soft closing doors. The operating system of the new Q7 is impressive – to say the least – and includes two large, high-resolution touchscreen displays. The upper display is used for controlling infotainment and navigation, while the lower display is used to manage climate control, text input, and convenience functions. The screens are bright, the graphics are clear, and we found the set-up to be responsive and very user-friendly. There is also an optional headup display for displaying important functions in your immediate field of vision whilst driving. Impressed by both the interior and exterior of the vehicle, it was time to get this beauty out onto the tarmac. The Q7 comes with several engine options, all of which are coupled with an eightspeed Tiptronic and permanent all-wheel drive. Our Q7 55 TFSI Quattro comes equipped with the most powerful engine in the range. It houses a high-tech 3.0 TFSI, Turbocharged V6 petrol unit that generates 250 kW and 500 Nm or torque. This enables our 50
fact magazine
Q7 model to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The overall makeup of the 2021 Q7 ensures a sporty performance on-road and a powerful performance off-road. In the urban environment, we found the manoeuvrability of this agile vehicle to be very precise. The Q7 is responsive, features an impressive braking system, and grips perfectly on the bends. In the little time we spent off-road, this mid-size SUV’s optional adaptive air suspension handled any terrain we directed underneath it, and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the journey. The fact that the master designers at Audi have kept the safety of you and your loved ones in mind with the inclusion of an array of safety and driver-assist features adds to the feeling of comfort throughout the driving experience. ✤

WOW FACTOR The BMW Group impressed all those in attendance at #NEXTGen 2020 with the unveiling of three outstanding creations.
“
“This global digital launch proved to be a phenomenal success, one filled with exciting new technologies and innovations.”
I
n 2019, the BMW Group introduced the #NEXTGen experience to the world. Created as the group’s own format to support the company’s claim in innovation leadership, this event proved to be an overwhelming success, paving the way for a future annual occurrence. With the radical changes taking place across the globe in current times, this year’s event – #NEXTGen 2020 – was presented in a purely digital format, with all communication and information being shared online. Regardless of these restrictions, the global digital launch proved to be a phenomenal success, one filled with exciting new technologies and innovations.
BMW: Shaping the Future At #NEXTGen 2020, the BMW Group gifted all virtual attendees a rare glimpse into areas of its technological and vehicle development, areas that are usually shrouded in secrecy. The BMW Group is the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, and has been 54

producing innovative vehicles since 1928. Its long-standing goal has been to continue spearheading technological development through the setting of trends and shaping of future mobility. BMW is constantly striving to reinvent itself, and this year’s event focussed on topic areas such as connectivity, artificial intelligence, electric drive systems, international alliances as well as BMW’s new Driving Simulation Centre. In its own words, “The BMW Group isn’t ready for the future – it is helping to actively shape it.” As you may know, the BMW Group owns the BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and BMW Motorrad brands. #NEXTGen 2020 was used as a platform to exclusively unveil three new vehicle models. This unveiling included two world premieres: the BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 and the MINI Vision Urbanaut. The event also focussed on the seriesproduction version of the BMW iNext, which will be badged as the BMW iX when it goes on sale in late November 2021. All three of these outstanding creations were greeted with excitement and high praise.

“The BMW iX reflects BMW’s mission to lead the driving experience into the future.”
The BMW iX With a year still to go before its market launch, the future BMW iX is still in the series development stage. However, the first model is based on a new modular, extensible future toolkit developed by the BMW Group. The focus is on a fresh interpretation of design, sustainability, versatility, luxury, and sheer driving enjoyment. Harnessing the latest innovations in the fields of electrification, automated driving, and connectivity, the BMW iX reflects BMW’s mission to lead the driving experience into the future. The game-changing character of this new approach is distinctly expressed in the iX’s design. The combination of the conservative use of crisp character lines, large shapely surfaces, and the sharper contours of the wheel arches give the iX a commanding presence. At the front end, the gigantic, vertically structured, kidney grille adds a striking component to the body, but gone are the days when this feature was merely a showpiece. Radar functions, camera technology, and other sensors are now flawlessly integrated into the grille behind a transparent surface. This reinvented grille now has the purpose of housing an innovative and multifunctional high-tech interface necessary for the advanced driver assistance systems. This technology is currently paving the way for automated driving. The BMW iX also features the slimmest headlight units ever fitted on a series-produced model as well as exceptionally slim rear lights. Frameless side windows, flush-fitted door openers, and a tailgate that has no separation joints are all visual highlights of the iX. A final
example of discreetly integrated technology in this model is the rear-view camera that has been incorporated into the BMW logo on the tailgate. Inside the vehicle, the iX has ample space on offer, ensuring you are welcomed by a feeling of comfort as soon as you enter the cabin. High-end materials have been used throughout this SUV, and it is obvious that no expense was spared when this car was created. The novel steering wheel is hexagonally shaped, whilst the inclusion of a rocker switch for gear selection and the BMW Curved Display contribute toward its innovative theme. Adding to the sense of openness is the grand panoramic glass roof that sits above all five of the seats. Complementing the premium feel of the car is the functional and user-friendly layout of the interior that creates a sense of organised ambience. With the absence of a centre tunnel, the space feels even more open and allows for extra legroom in both the front and the rear seating. The centre console looks like a high-quality display piece and further adds to the exclusive nature of the interior. With plenty of storage space throughout this SUV, it’s easy to store all necessary goods, thereby preventing clutter. A minimalistic approach has been taken towards the operating system’s layout in the vehicle. A curved one-piece display is central to the controlling of the vehicle’s functions, whilst a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and central 14.9-inch infotainment screen are perfectly positioned for use by the driver. As for performance, the iX is operated by the fifth generation BMW eDrive technology. This includes two electric motors, fact magazine

power electronics charging technology, and a high-voltage battery. The power unit used in this SUV has a maximum output of more than 370kW or 500 hp. This enables the iX to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds. This model also boasts an exceptionally low combined electric power consumption figure of 21 kWh per 100 kilometres. This provides the vehicle with a range of 600 kilometres in the WLPT cycle. The iX is also capable of exceptionally fast charging as the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent of its full capacity in under 40 minutes. Furthermore, a mere 10 minutes of charging can increase this SUV’s range by more than 120 kilometres. All in all, the BMW iX has shown itself to be a functional and aesthetically pleasing motor vehicle.
MINI Vision Urbanaut #NEXTGen 2020 was used as the platform for the world premiere of the MINI Vision Urbanaut. This new design concept focuses on the ideas of ample space, versatility, and a minimum footprint. The intention behind this approach is to display a versatile array of extended uses for this vehicle type and instil a sense of wanderlust in those who encounter it. This model is meant to be more than just a means to travel from A to B – it has been designed to create a retreat within your vehicle, a place where you can not only go to travel, but also relax or get work done whenever the need arises. This shape-shifting, driverless, electric vehicle feels like the best of the past and future combined together to form something truly unique. 56

“
“This shape-shifting, driverless, electric vehicle feels like the best of the past and future combined together to form something truly unique.”
The exterior design of the Urbanaut is extraordinary in both its pure simplicity and functional capacity. Its form allows for the maximisation of the internal space and creation of something completely individual in nature. The front end of this MINI exhibits the evolution of the iconic headlights and radiator grille. The prominent matrix design of the headlights and rear lights displays various multicoloured graphics, further expressing the individual quality of this remarkable vehicle. Its Ocean Wave-coloured “skateboard wheels” are transparent and illuminated from the inside, once again exhibiting its unique character. The C-pillar showcases a series of MINI charms, reminiscent of the collecting of stickers and pins from festivals and other far-flung adventures. In truth, one could spend all day taking in the creative design of this remarkable exterior. The interior of the Urbanaut provides the perfect environment in which to go on an adventure, proving that it’s not the destination, but the journey that counts. Once you have arrived at your destination, the interior of this vehicle can be transformed into a living room in a few simple steps. This transformation includes the driver’s area turning into a seating corner, and the dashboard being lowered into a “daybed”. The design of the one-of-a-kind windscreen allows for it to be opened upwards to create something reminiscent of a “street balcony”, opening up the interior space even more. The rear of the car has been designed to house the “cosy corner”, an area where a textile-covered “Loop” extends over the seat bench and features the option of LED backlighting. The central section
of the vehicle retains an open design, serving as a place to sit when the car is stationary. There’s only one way to enter the back of this vehicle, and that is through the one big sliding door on the passenger side. A small integrated table, complete with a plant, is situated opposite this entry point and finishes off the interior design with a flourish. The table in the centre of the car houses the familiar MINI circular instrument, the MINI “Token”, which serves as the digital-analogue interface for MINI moments. This placement ensures that the information area is located where it is accessible to all. This intuitive user interface creates a minimalist, spatial experience whilst retaining full connectivity. The MINI “Token” is the centrepiece of the MINI Vision Urbanaut experience and activates the three pre-configured MINI moments – Chill, Wanderlust, Vibe – when placed in purpose-designed slots in the table at the centre of the vehicle. These moments affect how the car behaves. The Chill moment allows you catch your breath and appreciate the present moment. The rear seat bench is folded down, the LEDs embedded in the Loop archway above light up to reveal a pattern reminiscent of a forest canopy, and the central table folds down to become a lamp. Wanderlust is designed for when the vehicle is in motion and is the only MINI moment when the Urbanaut is operating on automated driving function. The central screen displays ‘50s and ‘60s inspired visuals and in driverless mode, the Loop mimics the car movement, simulating the blur of passing scenery. The Vibe moment is fact magazine

centred around interaction with others. The Loop surface projects images of graphic equalisers that move in time to the music on the MINI’s front exterior as well as on all of the wheels. The “Token” also allows for additional “My Mini moments” through the configuration of preferred ambient lighting, music, fragrances, and more that can be activated at any time. There’s no doubt that the MINI Vision Urbanaut is a showpiece for the innovative and creative capabilities of the BMW Group.
BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 The BMW Group’s second world premiere at #NEXTGen 2020 was the BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04. Once again, a truly original design concept was unveiled, this time with two wheels. The near-series version of the Motorrad concept has been developed to offer both a means of transport as well as communication for the urban commuter. Equipping this vehicle with electric drive, a cutting-edge design, and innovative connectivity solutions ensures this scooter will redefine its segment. The Motorrad boasts a genuinely innovative design, complete with revolutionary architecture. It breaks the traditional scooter mould and gifts the public with a glimpse into the future. This scooter has not been designed for off-road journeys into the mountains. Instead, the designers focused solely on the needs of those commuting in an urban environment. An elongated, low vehicle body and diagonally rising front end creates a modern and clear silhouette, whilst generous surfaces complete with acutely defined edges and crisp lines blend the Motorrad effortlessly into its contemporary surroundings. Its location also bestows the CE 04 with an excellent centre of gravity, strengthening its handling capabilities and increasing the rider’s level of fun. This scooter’s balanced proportions are further enhanced through the use of two colours. Highlighted by the surrounding Mineral White metallic of the surface finish, matt black forms the core of the vehicle, stretching from front to rear and covering both the tyres and front light as well as integrating the drive unit and suspension elements. The positioning of the side panels allows views of the drive unit, single-sided swing arm, cooling ribs, tooth belt, and spring strut, giving onlookers a glimpse at the inner workings of this novel creation. The distinct layout and slim contours of the modern and reduced U-shaped LED front lights accentuate the game-changing design of the front end, whilst the rear lights form two C-shaped elements integrated into the rear side panels. What is perhaps the most impressive quality of this scooter is its digital capabilities. The rider is connected to the vehicle through their smartphone via the BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04. It houses a 10.25-inch display, the largest in the scooter segment. This acts as an interface between the digital and analogue worlds of the rider. The BMW Group has also designed a range of rider equipment to ensure your safety as

Innovative features of this equipment include integrated light guides in the sleeves of the parka that can be switched on and changed in colour via sensors. To ensure the rider never runs out of battery life, the inside pocket of the parka has an inductive charging field for smartphones. In the future, the graphic designers of the Motorrad see the scooter itself as a moving screen with which the rider can express his or her personality through the use of graphics and colours. The BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 is a testament to the groundbreaking approach to motor vehicle design by its progressive creators.
Embracing a New Age With all of the innovative technology and newly conceived creations displayed at #NEXTGen 2020, one thing became abundantly clear to all those in attendance. We are experiencing the dawn of a new age. The days of hands on the wheel and feet on the pedals are numbered, rapidly being replaced by an age of electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and automated driving. It is BMW that perhaps has the best attitude towards this inevitable transformation, deciding to be an active participant in the shaping of this future instead of taking a backseat, waiting for it to happen. ✤ fact magazine

In Conversation with… Emre Kirazci As 2020 draws to a close and many of the year’s norms follow us into 2021, we take five minutes to chat about the world of hospitality with Emre Kirazci, Director of Sales and Marketing at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. The pandemic is still dominating conversations worldwide. What can you tell us about how Sofitel Bahrain handled the situation? Welcoming, safeguarding, and taking care of others is at the very heart of what we do and who we are. As part of Sofitel Bahrain’s mission to continue providing its guests with top-of-the-line services during these challenging times, we have fully adopted all safety measures directed by local authorities and integrated Accor’s ALL SAFE Cleanliness and Preventions Label procedures into all of our processes to ensure our guests’ safety. These safety processes were developed by the world leader in testing, inspections, and certifications: Bureau Veritas. Sofitel Bahrain was among the first hotels in Bahrain to receive the ALL SAFE certification after being audited by Bureau Veritas for the implementation of various safety measures. This allowed us to confidently welcome our guests back, and we are ready to take on any future challenges to ensure the safety of our valued guests and team members. A surge in staycations and domestic tourism has emerged as a trend worldwide for obvious reasons. Are there any ongoing offers at the hotel that cater to Bahrain residents? We’ve extended our popular Escapade de Luxe offers, providing all Bahraini residents a chance to experience true luxury and the pinnacle of prestige with their families, starting from only BD55 net for an exquisite Luxury Room with a glorious sea view. Alternatively, they can discover curated family retreats with Prestige Suite offers starting from BD85 net plus complimentary breakfast for two and direct access to our glittering private beach. The recent resumption of indoor dining in Bahrain has given people something to look forward to. Are there any unique F&B offerings at Sofitel Bahrain that our readers should know about? Remaining true to its chic gastronomic offerings, the hotel is packed with exciting promotions throughout December. We know how much our guests missed Bahrain’s favourite brunch scene, so we reintroduced our Grand Friday Brunch with its full glory! Furthermore, we’ve recently opened Japanese outlet Maison Sushi, which as the name implies, serves authentic Japanese cuisine with a wide range of sushi next to picturesque views of the Arabian Gulf. 60

In December, we’re inviting all residents to embrace the celebratory vibes at Sofitel Bahrain on the Kingdom’s 49th National Day with a 25 percent discount on food and beverage. Take your palates on a wonderful international culinary journey at any one of our award-winning restaurants and discover flavour-packed dining experiences exclusively on December 16. Moreover, the hotel is packed with festive season promotions, from our Christmas Tree Lighting Brunch on December 10 to the hallmark Grand Christmas Day Brunch. And last but not the least, our New Year’s Eve celebration will delight everyone. Toast to 2021 with style at our supercharged beach dinner event – New Year’s Eve Fusion Bonfire Night – featuring an extraordinary line-up of live entertainment and decadent meals. With Bahrain added to the UK's quarantine-free corridor list, travel is slowly becoming a reality. How equipped is the property once international travel resumes? Transparency had always been the key to our success and is more important than ever, so communicating directly with our guests has been critical in raising awareness about our new hygienic protocols and procedures. The tourism industry needs to gain back the trust of clients with transparency to ensure a smooth recovery over the upcoming period. This will also allow it to play its important role of developing collaborative opportunities and improve solidarity between nations around the world. Due to the pandemic, there has been an observable shift towards digital meetings and events. Touchless travel has become a norm, and the rise of contactless services is quite evident all around. There is a conscious shift at Sofitel Bahrain towards digital technologies as a tool for communication during this current crisis. Due to social
distancing measures, we will continue to offer exceptional services with minimum contact whilst opting for digital communication tools as a means of having a constant connection. We’re ready to witness a prominent rise of digital meetings and events as travel, hotel stays, and business dealings undergo transformations in 2021. This has put contactless services in the forefront when it comes to an individual’s priorities while choosing between travel destinations, hotels, and other service-focused businesses. Therefore, our plans focus on these key points to ensure the peace of mind of our guests. Lastly, what's on the agenda this month and beyond? Despite a challenging 2020, we’re keen to change its course and end the year on a high note. Throughout December, join us as we spread Christmas joy with the arrival of Sofitel Bahrain’s Art de Noël Festive Season, guaranteed to deliver memorable experiences that will uplift everyone’s holiday spirit. Immerse yourselves in festive cheer as we host spectacular celebrations from indulgent Christmas brunches to our iconic Tree Lighting ceremony. Come New Year’s Eve, our celebrations will ensure you welcome the new year with a grand beach dinner featuring fusion entertainment and plenty of surprises. As for 2021, we will continue to offer attractive staycation packages for all Bahraini residents with exciting food and beverage promotions. Stay tuned for alluring Valentine’s Day rooms and dinner offers, themed Grand Friday Brunches, award-winning Layali Al Zallaq Ramadan Tent experiences, Eid retreats, La Plage Beach Festivals, and hopefully the return of the hotel’s live concerts and gala dinners very soon. We also miss and hope to start hosting big fat Indian weddings as well! ✤ fact magazine

ocial isolation was the order of the day through most of 2020, and with it came the end of our favourite weekend tradition: brunch. But things are looking up! The Friday brunch at Jumeirah Royal Saray Bahrain is back, taking place again at Brasserie Royale. Now, unless you were living under a rock pre-pandemic, you know this is a spot that frequent brunchers swear by – and not just for all those palate pleasers. Dining companions in tow, I arrive famished, yet still take a moment to take in the luxe interiors that greet me upon arrival. Glossy marble flooring, glittering chandeliers, a fountain accented with rose petals and reminiscent of an Andalusian palace – it never ceases to amaze. Our destination, Brasserie Royale, is an all-day dining restaurant located on the ground floor right by the reception. That's convenient. Here, the dominance of white marble contrasted by Arabesque décor elements results in a setting that is minimalist yet majestic. Beautiful arches stand tall, serving as partition replacements between the different areas of Brasserie Royale's vast dining space. The crisp white tablecloths, meanwhile, bring out the cheeriness of the yellow leather chairs – I'm in love with that shade of canary yellow. As we walk towards our table, a plate piled high with seafood darts past, whetting our appetites instantly. We're welcomed by both Executive Chef Claudio Dieli and our waiter, the friendliness of the staff palpable in the air. And in line with adapting to the new normal, we're told that unlike the brunches of our past, the buffet will come to us in order to minimise the movement of diners and avoid those all-too-familiar crowds around live cooking stations. Genius. It's not long before the carb loading begins as a bread basket packed with freshly baked loaves and rolls arrives, reminding us that calories don't count on the weekend. As we slowly start to butter one, we soak up the atmosphere, marvelling mid-sway at the Cuban performer who can best be described as a one-woman band. Senses heightened, we're ready to kick off this culinary journey with appetisers from far and wide. Greek salad, a platter of sushi, a selection of hot and cold mezze, and the star of this round: clams, mussels, jumbo shrimps, crab, and lobster on a bed of ice. We're excitedly attempting to navigate this spread when a chef passes by with slices of authentic Italian pizza straight out of the oven. Yes, please! Once we've taken a breather and braced ourselves for the mains, we find ourselves at the crossroads of India and Italy – only the countries responsible for the two most popular cuisines on the planet. On the agenda? Pasta and mushroom risotto alongside chicken tikka masala, dal, and white rice followed by a whole host of skewered meats – think: chicken, lamb 66

chops, fish, kebab, and kofta – coming straight off the charcoal grill that is stationed on the terrace outside. And, of course, all you have to do is ask for seconds (or thirds) when something is particularly appealing. We choose to wash it all down with a refreshing passion fruit mojito and vow to try and recreate it at home. It's that good. But if its slightly tart flavour is not your thing, there's a rainbow of soft drinks, fresh juices, and cocktails to choose from. Our culinary extravaganza is nearing its end, but not quite. We give our waiter the green light for dessert, and we perk right up. Served in a manner similar to a traditional afternoon tea, the sweet finish comprises a selection of Arabic sweets (yes, baklava and bird's nest kunafa included) on a wooden plate topped with a glass dome. This is one classy affair – and a far cry from the days of long, achingly slow buffet lines. Another selection soon shows up, this time a range of miniature tarts, cakes, and macarons on a two-tiered stand with a wonderfully whimsical touch. So here we are: out of the house, out on the town, satiated, and wrapping up Friday brunch on an unexpectedly Instagrammable note. What's not to like? ✤

espite the ubiquitous face masks, my dining companion and I are greeted by smiling faces at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, which says something of the customer service that's about to follow at Silk's. We're directed through the luxurious, maze-like hotel, and arrive famished at the restaurant soon after. What greets us is a bright and airy space, and a sense of excitement kicks in as we're ushered to our designated table. With polished silverware patiently awaiting our arrival at the table, we're now moments away from our meal, so we take a moment or two to observe the set-up. Here, the ceilings are high, there's both indoor and outdoor seating areas to choose from, and the restaurant is structured strategically in order to give guests enough room to tread around while maintaining a safe distance. Outside of its à la carte menu, Silk's hosts two different themed nights each week – Monday's Seafood Night and Flaming Thursdays – and I'm about to try both. Buffet tables are set up at the front of the restaurant, and diners are escorted by a host so that they can select their desired dishes. These are then prepared accordingly, picked up, and served to you at your table, thereby minimising personal contact as well as any sort of contamination. How great is that? We start our culinary journey on a Thursday, and the buffet experience is a treat from start to end. We begin by piling up 70

our table with appetisers and side dishes as a warm-up for the main courses, and quickly realise that we should've saved a bit more space once we tuck into the greatest rib-eye steak we've ever tried. It's juicy, it's tender, it's loaded with flavour. Highly marbled and with almost no external fat, it is prepared to absolute perfection – according to your preference, of course! Something else that we can vouch for? Literally anything that comes off the barbecue at Silk's. A word to the wise: if it's sizzling and slow-cooked, try it. It's no wonder Flaming Thursdays is the stuff of carnivore dreams. But with my pescatarian side screaming for attention, I take a breather and brace myself for another feast, this time at Monday’s Seafood Night. It's an entirely different buffet experience, this one, with the freshest catch of the day starring in the lead role. It's hard to know where to start when I set my eyes on everything from sushi and sashimi to seafood dim sum, tempura, and the likes of grouper and red snapper cooked to order. As I make my way through lobsters, tiger prawns, and the sweetest oysters I've had on the island, the decadence of this meal isn't lost on me. And the best part? No one can stop you from getting seconds (or thirds). Desserts are a whole other thing at Silk's, but whatever you do, make sure you save some room for the banana split. The crown jewel is Mövenpick's special ice cream, and it takes this classic to a whole new level. Try it now, thank us later.
FOODIE CORNER •
Clearly, Silk's has figured out the secret to plastering a smile on the faces of foodies across the workweek. As for weekends? There's a popular Friday brunch on offer, but that's a story for another time. Even the name of this restaurant feels apt – the dining experiences here are smooth from start to finish, with enticing extras like Latin band performances or live DJ sets at the poolside terrace only adding to their appeal. If you're on a quest for a themed brunch that offers great value for money in a warm and welcoming ambience, your search ends here. ✤

W
hat is it about Lebanese food that keeps us coming back for more? Think about it. Bahrain’s dining scene has evolved to boast upscale steakhouses, ubercontemporary Indian restaurants, countless pizza joints, killer Nikkei cuisine, and more food trucks than we can keep track of. Yet we turn to Lebanese eateries time and time again. And on the agenda this month? Mandoleen. The lounge-restaurant hybrid located in Adliya may not have been around for very long – it opened its doors during the tail end of August – but is winning rave reviews already. And it's easy to see why. At a time when Bahrain residents are starved for more than just great food, it opens at 12pm, with daily live entertainment perking them right up. Head to Mandoleen in the evening, and you'll see crowds of people cheerfully singing along with the performers on stage, clearly nostalgic for a more carefree time. But we digress. We're here to sample the authentic Lebanese dishes we've heard so much about, and considering Mandoleen hails from Beirut, the bar is set pretty high. But first we reflect on its understated, creamy white interiors. The fuss-free décor feels like a cosy living room, almost like teta is getting ready to force-feed us into oblivion. We spot the usual suspects on the menu, delighted by the absence of any culinary pretentiousness. There's a vast amount of hot mezza options to choose from – and even more cold – so we quickly pile our table up with the tangy Tabouleh, smoky Mutabal, creamy Labneh Baladiyeh, and rice-stuffed Vine Leaves – and we're just getting started. 74

NEW IN TOWN •
We've obviously tried these dishes at several other restaurants, but we love how homely their essence is. Also capturing the heart and soul of Lebanese cuisine are the hot appetisers we can't help but order, so we now vouch for the Fried Meat Kebbe (stuffed with perfectly spiced minced meat), Maqaneq (the pomegranate molasses keeps the sausages interesting), and Spinach Fatayer (that pairs fresh spinach with onions and tomatoes). A close second: the Potato Harra Provencal. But is a meal at a Lebanese restaurant even complete without this herby, carb-loaded starter? We just about wipe our plates clean with the freshly baked bread that comes straight from the oven to us. And speaking of which, be sure to give the manakish a try if you manage to make space for it. The signature 'Thyme Mandoleen' is a winner. Onto the mains, where the charcoal grill reigns supreme. The Mandoleen Grills – another signature – is the one we opt for as it brings together a selection of kofta, shish tawook, kabab orfali, kabab eggplant, and lamb chops, making it a real crowd-pleaser (and ideal for a group of people with varying dietary preferences). It's the quintessential mixed grill, accenting tender meats with a beautifully potent garlic dip. The rather aptly named Chicken with Potato in Oven is one of the menu's more “special” dishes, as Mandoleen calls it, and feels like a Lebanese take on a Sunday roast – except we'd order this comforting combination any day of the week. Prefer red meat over white? The Kebeh Bel Laban comprises kibbeh cooked in yoghurt, and is easily one of the best mains at Mandoleen. Garlicky yoghurt pairs well with most savoury dishes from this part of the world, so why should kibbeh be
any different? Here, it's served with an aromatic vermicelli rice, as tradition dictates. It's at this point in the evening when our appetites are slowly giving up on us, but we can't fathom walking out without giving the legendary Kounafa a try. Not only is it classically prepared (thankfully, there's no Nutella nor corn flakes in sight), but it also transports us to Lebanon in a heartbeat. As we tap our feet to the beat of the tabla – and vow to stop after this bite of dessert – we temporarily forget just how far Beirut feels amidst this complicated year. ✤

uxury streetwear has been all the rage for the past few years, but just as we saw its popularity wane ever so slightly, it bounced back with a vengeance in 2020. Because, yes, coronavirus. The pandemic has changed a lot about our daily lives, and our shopping habits are no exception. We’ve swapped our suits for sweatshirts, our stilettos for sneakers. But these ups and downs in the realm of athleisure have nothing to do with Bunyamin Aydin. The founder and creative director of Les Benjamins started out humbly – with a project centred around 30 printed tees, to be specific – and quietly rose through the ranks, eventually showing at Milan Fashion Week and partnering up with the likes of Puma. Today, in the midst of a relentlessly complicated year, the luxury streetwear label has a lot to celebrate, the recent launch of its online store and unveiling of its Autumn/Winter 2020 collection included. Entitled Wild Wild East, it stays true to the Istanbulbased brand's interpretation of the East from a unique point of view. Here, subtle nods to Anatolian culture can be found via colours that range from icy grey and pale yellow to pomegranate and denim blue. As an ode to the red tulips of Istanbul, they are traced in thread embroidery across velvet or printed over cotton shirting, and the signature Les Benjamins carpet motif becomes jacquard knit dresses, scarves, and plush sweaters. Meanwhile, the contoured panels of sleeves and trousers in a collage of textiles recall the psychedelic graphics of 70s vinyl covers. And since Bunyamin reminisced on distant teen dreams of rock and roll stardom and reimagined the potent energy of youth to create the collection, rock tropes continue in archetypal details and silhouettes – think: smooth leather trench coats, fringed sleeve trims, appliqué crystal detailing, and shaggy faux fur. Like the talent behind it (Bunyamin has lived in Turkey, Germany, and Switzerland), Wild Wild East may have Turkish roots, but it seamlessly blurs the lines between East and West. ✤ SHOP THE STORY AT WWW.LESBENJAMINS.COM fact magazine

NEW & NOW Charlotte Tilbury
Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray Considering party season is upon us, the launch of Charlotte Tilbury's first ever setting spray is cause for celebration – this one's a must for the beauty kit this time of year. Joining the best-selling AIRbrush range, the new Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray will prime and set your makeup for up to 16 hours, instantly locking in your look. It's also lightweight and hydrating (courtesy of aloe vera and Japanese green tea), which means your makeup won't melt, fade, not settle into fine lines as the night goes on. As for its delicate floral scent? Just the proverbial cherry on top.
CurrentBody CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Just in time for us emerging out of our apartments and facing the world again is the Middle East launch of CurrentBody, a leading expert in all things beauty devices. Start with this rather futuristic mask that celebrities – read: Suki Waterhouse, Zara Martin, and Adwoa Aboah – swear by. The latest generation in anti-ageing wearable technology, it has been clinically proven to reduce wrinkles by 35 percent in just four weeks by combining anti-ageing red and near infra-red light therapy to penetrate deep into the skin’s lower layers. The result? Plumper and smoother skin in the short term, a reduction in the appearance of fine lines as well as improved tone, texture, and firmness in the long.
Dolce&Gabbana Beauty Mysterious Baroque Palette East meets West in this new, limited-edition makeup palette inspired by the colours and motifs of the Middle East. But there's so much more to it than its glamorous gold-and-blue exterior. It houses all the essentials – four eyeshadows, two lip powders, highlighter, and bronzing powder complete with a double-ended brush – making it the perfect little addition to your clutch during festive season. We're obsessed with the lip powders in shades ‘Almond’ and ‘Dahlia’, both of which are highly pigmented and provide buildable colour, transforming from powder to luminous semi-matte lipstick.
Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Skin Finish Foundation Stick Exploring that elusive space between full coverage and a natural-looking finish, Huda Kattan's stick foundation is nothing short of genius, creating naturally flawless skin but with a high-filter finish. Not only is its buttery formula easily buildable, but the diamond-shaped bullet also makes for optimal precision. And because Huda understands the woes of mixing makeup with extreme weather conditions, it's noncomedogenic as well as sweat-, humidity-, and water-resistant. Bonus: there's a whopping 39 shades (nine of which are new) to choose from. Farewell, Facetune.
Christian Louboutin Loubiworld When the man behind those iconic red soles makes his first foray into fragrance, it makes headlines in the beauty world (and beyond). Enter: Loubiworld. But Christian Louboutin didn't just stop at a singular launch. Collaborating with the likes of Daphné Bugey and Christophe Raynaud, he created a series of seven scents, each unveiling a personal memory, a fantasy, or a dream of its creator. Whether you're seeking a perfume shrouded in mystery or brimming with magic, one thing's for sure: the faceted glass bottles that house the perfumes are nothing short of striking. They're lacquered in Louboutin’s signature red, and topped with varying silver caps that scream whimsy. 92

What We’re (Still) Talking About Formula 1
James Bond
Xbox x Apple
One of the most awaited events of the year is coming to Saudi Arabia, which will become the 33rd host country for Formula 1. The country is set to make its debut on the Formula 1 tracks as it joins the tail-end of the 2021 F1 calendar. The race, part of a longstanding union between Formula 1 and the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF), will be held in a street circuit in Jeddah, while the new purpose-built track at Qiddiyah is scheduled to be completed in 2023. This race will be hosted for
The James Bond franchise has made headlines many times this year, from the search for the next 007 to the death of Sean Connery, who was the first to portray the fictional British secret agent James Bond between 1962 and 1983. He laid out an empire and, since his Bond days, has lent the role to several talented actors. The actor “defined an era and style,” according to Daniel Craig, a successor in the James Bond role. And speaking of successors, if you haven’t heard the name Lashana Lynch, you will soon. Taking over the renowned
As comparisons between the Xbox Series X and PS5 – both selling out almost immediately upon launching – continue, Microsoft is giving gamers a reason to stay indoors as several countries worldwide face lockdowns for a second time. While the reviews and technology for its new gaming console might not serve the leap we experienced from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One, it's coming up with more reasons for us to travel deep into the virtual world. The company is currently collaborating with fellow tech giant Apple, with a statement on Apple's

The race is planned to take place at night under luminous lights, adding an extreme atmosphere that this event calls for and bringing the city to life with the ongoing events. As Daniel Craig bows out of the famous franchise, she is making history as the first black female 007 in the 26th Bond film. Lashana Lynch has been both attacked and abused in the face of the announcement, but this modern-day James Bond is taking the criticism in stride and says that she feels “grateful” to be in a position where she can confront stereotypes around race and gender.

Currently, these new controllers are not officially supported in iOS or iPadOS. These updates are still in the works and it isn’t clear when they will be available, but it’s only a matter of time.

ISLAND INSIDER
Eman AlMannai
Vice President - Sales and Marketing, Golden Gate - Bahrain Bay As an influential – and highly inspiring – woman in our society, what is your biggest wish for your fellow females in Bahrain? My biggest wish is for them to not underestimate education. Knowledge is the single most powerful tool because, as Bahraini women, we are all capable of holding high positions – and with that, helping other women shine. Not only can a woman in a high position accomplish so much, but she’s also ideal in setting an example for other women to follow. A very complicated year is finally coming to an end. What is the single biggest lesson you’ve learnt in 2020? That’s a tough question. I can’t summarise it in a single lesson as 2020 taught us so many. No one expected even two percent of what happened in terms of social isolation, in terms of the impact on the 98

economy and the aviation industry. Humans suffered, the government suffered, the world suffered – and so many ways of thinking have changed as a result. I think we should look at every crisis as a lesson, so this year taught me that every single thing that we are doing in life can be done more efficiently and more effectively. Humans often insist that things can only be done in one way, but the pandemic proved that is not the case. Everything can be done in a different and smarter way. Education has changed. E-commerce is booming. People are creating new businesses to cope with this situation, and resourceful people have come up with ideas that are smart, unique, and different. The biggest lesson here is to always think about how to open one door when another closes. Finding that exit might help you reach your dreams much faster.
New Year’s resolutions are made to be broken – true or false? Have you thought of yours for 2021? I agree and disagree because the most important thing is to have a plan. The new year will bring with it more surprises – after all, no one could’ve predicted everything that happened in 2020. But we should plan anyway. Some things will go right, others will go wrong, but what’s important is that you do whatever you can do, achieve whatever you can achieve, and keep adding bricks to build the walls of your dreams. Everyone must have a plan about how to end the year and start the new one. It’s been a tough year, but it trained us for 2021, so I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to building taller towers and educating more people on real estate. Maybe I’ll write my second book, maybe I’ll become a minister, so I have several dreams for 2021. InshAllah, a majority will come true.
