All is Calm, All is Bright...

Every end is a new beginning...

H

ow did this happen? Is it me or is time escaping us like it literally doesn’t exist? December 2019 is geared up to be packed with all kinds of lovely treats, but before you rush onto the next one, pause for a second and think about all the things you’ve been able to achieve and experience this year. If, like me, the year seems to be a blur, just scroll through the photo gallery on your phone (or instagram profile – guilty!) and remind yourself of all the amazing memories you’ve made. At FACT, it’s been a rollercoaster with awards seasons, lots of cool trips and events, and another successful year of publishing. This month is, hands down, the most lively and special in Bahrain. We’ll be getting into the celebratory mood with many of you this holiday season. When I’m not in the office or at home playing all the Christmas songs on YouTube, you can find me at one of the many festive happenings around the town. Turn to p29 and start your merry journey with the ultimate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gatherings worth looking into for your celebrations. Following on from this, you’ll find a list of our favourite NYE Hotspots (p45) in Bahrain and what they’re all offering for the eve of December 31. Choose one, send out the whatsapp group message and BOOK your table, fast! Last month saw FACT mark the 10th - that's right, a whole decade - annual dining awards here in Bahrain and what a night it was; I’m talking winter breeze, a beautiful 400-strong crowd and great food and drinks. More importantly, the winners were announced and you can check them out again on p86 alongside all the pictures from the glamorous night. As always, food, fashion, tech and lots of festive inspo is waiting to be discovered - just make sure that you get plenty of time in for some carolling and gingerbread-making at every opportunity - I know I will - #noregrets. For me, family, food and travel were once again at the forefront of my 2019, and they’re all things that will continue into the next year! In fact, a new bucket list is due, so as I sit down with Lonely Planet at my disposal, 2020 doesn’t seem that scary after all! If Bahraini’s entertainment calendar has anything to do with it, we’re looking at another incredible year ahead. See you on the flip side… Happy New Year, friends. ☺

DINING DELIGHTS With cooler temperatures setting in, the rooftop terrace at The Merchant House, Bahrain is the perfect destination to relax and unwind. Adding even more reasons to visit, the hotel has just launched a Friday Brunch with a difference as well as a traditional Afternoon T. THE AFTERNOON T IS inspired by the tradition of the English afternoon tea and borrows some of Gordon Campbell Gray’s grandmother’s traditional recipes such as the thinly sliced mini sandwiches and freshly baked scones served with homemade strawberry preserve and clotted cream. The Afternoon T also draws influences from the silk route history of Bahrain as a trading hub connecting East to West and so features spices and flavours of the region such as fresh ginger, fruits, dates and nuts. The Afternoon T will be served in The Library, a beautiful, elegant space with a modern classic atmosphere. The Afternoon T will be available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5.30pm. Indigo Rooftop Restaurant offers a distinctive ambiance for a refreshingly different Friday Brunch on its beautiful rooftop garden terrace. The much-acclaimed Chef Robert Shipman has created an exciting menu, pairing interesting flavours and ingredients that are authentic to both Mediterranean and Asian cuisines such as Poached Eggs served with Salsa Verde and 10

Grilled Halloumi to Salmon Avocado Roll and Seabass Sashimi. The brunch also features signature mocktails and beverages, all served at the table. The hotel made its debut in February this year and has already scooped two coveted awards including the Boutique Hotel of the Year at the Leaders in Hospitality Awards 2019 by Hotel & Catering News Middle East, and the Luxury Boutique Hotel of the Year at the LTG Africa and Middle East Awards. The Merchant House is also a part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. With its warm and colorful aesthetics, world-class international and Bahraini art collection, impressive library with over a thousand books and the spectacular rooftop garden terrace, The Merchant House is the jewel in the crown of Bahrain’s hotel scene. ✤

Highlights

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Four sisters, Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg are living in 1860s New England, in the aftermath of the Civil War in America. Despite the difficult and changing times, the March sisters manage to overcome their differences and stand by each other as they leave their family home and step into adult life.

DIRECTOR: Greta Gerwig CAST: Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Presenting the beloved story of the March sisters, Little Women captures the timeless tale in a whole new light. Bringing the writings of Louisa May Alcott to life, Greta Gerwig’s latest offering is definitely one of the most anticipated adaptations of 2019. Focusing more on the sisters’ adult lives, the film follows their journey as they leave their family home and support each other during challenging times. Unlike its previous retellings, the film delves deeper into themes rather than the traditional narrative, and shifts back and forth in time. Following the American Civil War, the March sisters come together as they navigate love, loss and forgiveness. After being retold generation after generation, the newest offering presents a kind of literary investigation of the characters. Writer-Director Greta Gerwig’s reworking of this timeless classic is simply breathtaking.

Jumanji: The Next Level

After being retold generation after generation, the newest offering presents a kind of literary investigation of the characters.

Unbeknownst to his friends, Spencer hid some pieces of the Jumanji video game and repaired the system in his grandfather’s basement. When his friends find Spencer missing and the game running, they decide to re-enter Jumanji to save him and to exit the game once and for all.

– Little Women

DIRECTOR: Jake Kasdan CAST: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart,

Karen Gillan

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

The perfect blend of an epic plot and an amazing star cast, Jumanji: The Next Level is bringing back our favourite video game universe! The same gang with a different game, the latest offering in the series puts a clever twist on the world’s most dangerous game. When Spencer goes missing after trying to re-enter the Jumanji world, his friends decide to go and find him and escape the game forever. As they get trapped inside the malfunctioning video game and explore uncharted territory, they realise that nothing is as they expected. Cooking with Mary Berry By Mary Berry

ALT-INDIE/POP COUNTRY/ROCK

Ocean

Everyday Life By Coldplay

By Lady Antebellum

Brimming with breathtaking storytelling and raw emotions, Lady Antebellum’s latest album sees them stepping into a new musical chapter. A warm welcome back for the country group, the 13-song record maintains their catchy laid-back vibe and reintroduces it with a touch of vulnerability. Putting emotions at the forefront, this is the trio’s first full-length EP since their 2017’s Heart Break. Written by singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd with Sam Ellis, Laura Veltz, and Jon Green, the track talks about eternal heartbreak and the inability to truly move on. Reminiscent of the rich and smooth sounds of the group’s earlier hits, the song brings them back to their true roots. Revealing a new and more personal side of the trio, Ocean encapsulates everything the band has been through in the past couple years. Ocean, the emotionally charged title track is an absolute tearjerker. Packed with minimal instrumental elements, the song features somber piano, gauzy guitar and Scott’s mesmerising vocals. A cinematic and theatrical harmony with a message, you’ll be belting out this track for days to come. Immersed in their life stories, the album is all about returning to the core of who the band really is. 56

fact magazine

New music is on the way from Coldplay! Armed with their harmonious melodies and soothing lyrics, the British band is back with its eighth studio album. Set to be a double album (we’re shrieking!) the record is divided into two parts, Sunrise and Sunset. A beautiful return to form for the band, Everyday Life is rooted in nostalgia and is very sensitive and earthy, unlike anything the band has done before. Featuring vocals by Belgian singer Stromae and horn sections by Femi Kuti, Arabesque sees Coldplay treading unfamiliar soil. Jazzier and better than ever, it is definitely one of the most amazing chart-ready songs released this year. Trying to make sense of things and expressing what they see and feel, Coldplay aims to shift away from all the negativity in the world and celebrate all that is good. T

here is a long-standing history attached to the 5-star Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain. Some of its staff have been there since the very beginning whilst loyal clients will tell you stories of how weekend family dinners became a ritual here and others who have been visiting Bahrain for years, feel a sentiment that is indescribable for how much the hotel means to them. After all, isn’t good hospitality about making memories? And I have some of those of my own. The well-reputed Friday Brunch at the Mövenpick is where I celebrated my very first birthday in the Gulf, my last staycation at the hotel led me to making a life-long friend in the PR & Communications Manager, and let’s not forget the many Christmas tree lightings, pool days and spa visits that have been nothing but magical every time. Yes, the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain really does have a special place in many people’s hearts. Being one of those myself, I was excited for the property to open its doors following their mammoth renovations. Ready to move with the times, the Mövenpick brand’s story of inspired thinking, seeped its way into the minds of the Bahrain team who have worked tirelessly to take the new-look hotel out of the shadows and into the spotlight. I was more than ready to witness this on a recent visit… WELCOME HOME Pulling up at the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain feels like parking up in old stomping grounds. At reception, I’m greeted by the very same bubbly and friendly gentleman who welcomed me two years ago. It feels like walking into an old friend’s house, but one look around the lobby and you’ll see that this friend’s home has been given a huge facelift. The lobby is bright, airy

• STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT and elegant in every way that represents the Mövenpick brand. Accentuated by beautifully-placed indoor plants and an aviary-inspired lounge, there is a real greenhouse feel where the sun shining in through the tall glass windows gives the illusion of being under the open skies. Already, the whole set up feels more open and fresher. Being back at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain evokes all the warm feelings I associate with this hotel, however, this time, it feels more bespoke, classy yet still very inclusive. I like it. Up to the room we go… SWEET SUITE LIFE Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts around the world is known to many as a modern, upscale hospitality company that is passionate about ‘making moments’, recognising that small gestures make a big difference to guests, and they certainly do ordinary things in an extraordinary way here at the Bahrain hotel. Stepping into our one-bedroom suite is like closing the doors on a bustling party and sinking into a personal sanctuary. Wow. Where do I start? The neutral tones of plum and beige is a total upgrade from the previous rooms. The king-size bed is comfier, the pillows and cushions are plusher, there’s a separate work desk and a marble-clad bathroom with deep-sinking tub, that I couldn’t wait to have a soak and amenities galore. Most of all, as is key to the brand’s approach, the small details make the biggest difference. There are plug sockets and USB ports on BOTH sides of the bed, enough storage for a family of four, water bottles to last you a week, and a mini-bar packed with all our favourites – crisps, chocolates, nuts, and more, with an excellent choice of drinks and hot beverages too. Do I even need to leave the room? That’s not all… wait for it. There’s a connecting door – and is it just me or do you also give connecting doors a little nudge when at a hotel? Thinking that it wouldn’t open, I confidently push down on the handle and to my utter surprise, the door opens up onto a whole new room which is part of the suite – speechless. This space features a full-out living room with a couch that also turns into a bed, a whole new storage wardrobe, an entire bathroom with walk-in rain shower, a second mini bar and, my favourite part, sliding doors out onto a massive balcony-cum-terrace where you can hear the cool breeze, birds chirping and breathe in the fresh winter air. The views are also something to behold as the city’s skyscrapers align in the distant as a backdrop to the cultural surroundings of Muharraq. This would be the perfect spot to capture all the best insta-worthy pictures. There is a noticeable change in the functionality of the rooms too. Technological features include iPod docks, free WiFi, air conditioning, light dimmers, IDD telephone, voicemail and a LCD TV with satellite 62

channels, however, everything is controlled via strategically-placed buttons by the bedside – something I can really appreciate. I have some of the best night’s sleeps and wake up refreshed, only to jump into a shower that has so many cool settings that you may not want to actually get out! This is the perfect room type for up to two adults and two children to stay in comfortably. FOOD GAME, STRONG I’ve always enjoyed the food at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, however, the dining venues themselves were a little outdated. Not anymore. Walking into Silk’s Restaurant is like walking into a European manor house in the countryside – it’s laid-back, sophisticated and absolutely stunning. There is an entire forest wall which adds a woodlands vibe to the eatery, which stretches into a bright conservatory with cosy seating. It feels intimate yet inviting, and the service is impeccable as usual. The lunch buffet is an ever-changing affair of delicious food. Fresh salads, yummy sushi, flavourful mains and a la minute dishes like pasta and shawarma are made to order. It’s interactive, friendly and very much feels like being at home in the kitchen with your family. The chefs have also revamped the a la carte menu which blew us away. I’m talking Szechwan Spiced Scallops which came with a creamy

vanilla-scented cauliflower puree that left our taste buds positively dancing. The Avocado and Quinoa sees grilled avo meet with roasted pumpkin and orange and chickpea salad – a wonderful concoction of ingredients. The Goats Cheese Ravioli is, simply, a revelation. Pockets of pasta generously filled with roasted pears and goats cheese, sitting on a bed of spinach and drizzled in hazelnut butter – it’s like something from the Food Network and tastes light and creamy. Just order it! From the Grill is my favourite section of the menu. I ordered New Zealand Prime Grass Fed Beef Tenderloin 180gr with a side of potato gratin and peppercorn sauce. Cooked medium-well, the steak was glazing when it arrived and juicy with every bite. The surprises and interaction surrounding dinner is what left us amazed. You get to

choose your very own steak knife from an exclusive selection, and there’s even a “Salt Box” (I went for a grating of the Pink Himalayan Salt) and a very cool “Mustard Bar” (Dijon all the way). These elements add a sense of excitement and “newness” to the menu and remind me that the hotel’s renovations have gone beyond aesthetics – it’s all about enhancing the guest experience and the staff really do make it memorable. There are plenty of themed nights and culinary events to try at Silk’s, but in all honesty, we would highly recommend stopping by for a casual dinner and tucking into the a la carte menu – it’s on par with some of the biggest and best names in the business TIME TO RELAX Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that the gym at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is one of the best we’ve experienced in the whole country. Every machine was chosen to give you a head-to-toe workout where you’ll feel like you’ve undertaken a more vigorous workout in a shorter amount of time. Even if you’re not a gym buff, this could be the ideal place to start. Of course, after the gym, there’s only one thing to do – relax. The hotel’s Rimal Spa features 12 treatment rooms, including single treatment suites, one double female suite and two traditional Turkish hammam suites with their own steam rooms and heated wet tables. All treatment rooms are designed to the highest standards and have private showers. To ensure privacy, the wellness facility offers segregated male and female wings with relaxation waiting areas where organic herbal infusions and fruit water are served. I’m here to try one of the revolutionary CACI (Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument) Synergy facials. CACI is a system that uses the series of electrical pulses to stimulate muscles, with microcurrent facial techniques in conjunction with faradic slimming and toning applications. The CACI Quantum and Synergy redefines facial muscles, reduces lines and wrinkles and tightens and tones sagging body muscles. Firstly, I’m a little bit in love with the spa bed which is adjusted to lift up my knees for extra comfort and is also heat controlled so get ready to fall into a deep slumber. My therapist is super knowledgeable. She identifies that

my skin is a little dehydrated and tired, especially around the eyes. She cleans the face with a hot towel before cleansing the skin gently to remove any lingering dirt. First, what feels like a blunt blade is in fact the Ultrasonic Skin Peeling device which feels strange but relaxing. Its benefits are abundant, including: destroying bacteria, cleansing, readying the skin to enhance the absorption of skincare formulations, stimulating and improving circulation and overall revealing more youthful looking skin. Next up is Orbital Microdermabrasion which deeply cleanses and exfoliates, removes imperfections and impurities and leaves your complexion clearer and smoother. Results are visible immediately. My favourite part of the facial had to be the use of S.P.E.D (simultaneous photo electrical delivery) Microcurrent LED Technology. It combines antibacterial and anti-inflammatory red and blue LED light therapy to help heal the skin and trigger tissue repair. By the end of my treatment, after the application of a cooling eye gel, I am radiantly glowing. My face feels tighter and looks sharper. My complexion tone looks brighter and refreshed – something which lasts for days to come. Is this worth the time and money? One hundred per cent yes! I mean, you’ll also get the chance to have a little nap and there’s a very soothing face and head massage to accompany. Highly recommended! SAME BUT DIFFERENT Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain’s resounding success in the market is more than just because of its location (which is VERY convenient, of course) – it’s located a mere few seconds from the airport. The team combines the brand’s celebrated Swiss roots with the embodiment of Bahraini hospitality, which is completely unmatched elsewhere. Rich culinary offerings, home-away-from-home accommodation, caring for local and global communities through various initiatives and protecting the environment, are all factors that make this hotel the shining star that it is. What makes it even better now are the mindblowing changes after the renovation which will surely impress all returning and first-time guests. For me, I literally felt the same values of the old building etched into the new design and décor; this has always been a place with character and charm, and now it has a new lease of life to compliment it. Excellent job, Mövenpick team. ✤

S

ince 1951, the Nissan Patrol has been embraced across the globe by SUV enthusiasts, establishing itself as one of the most capable, durable and reliable vehicles in the full-size SUV segment. Over 1.9 million units have been sold and this figure is set to sharply increase with the arrival of the new and improved 2020 model. When Fact Magazine was invited by the team at Y K Al-Moayyed Motors to experience this latest generation, we jumped at the opportunity and soon found ourselves standing in front of an imposing motor vehicle. This updated model features a striking new design that looks to have elevated the Patrol to a higher status of vehicle. The most obvious changes from its predecessors include its increased width, the Nissan V-motion grille that accentuates this model’s powerful, angular front end, as well as the new boomerang-shaped LED headlights. At the rear, the new taillights also sport the modern boomerang shape. These, along with a large chrome nameplate and sequential rear turn indicators, are flawlessly integrated into the exterior design. All-in-all, we were most impressed by the appearance of this refreshed SUV and were drawn into the interior by its sheer presence. Slipping inside the cabin, we were immediately greeted by the stylish, diamond-stitched quilted leather seats. These luxurious seats, along with the hand-stitched steering wheel, come complete with added padding to ensure an exceptionally comfortable and deluxe driving experience. The designers at Nissan have incorporated top notch finishes including wooden trims to give the cabin a premium quality feel. There is plenty of space in the front two rows of seating with ample head, knee, hip and leg room on offer for all occupants. The third row of seating consists of two seats and is more suitable for children. The dual-zone climate control fitted as standard greatly enhances the comfortability factor, whilst the decent sized luggage compartment, made all the larger when folding down the rear rows of seating, ensures this model has a strong practical and family orientated quality to it. A new centre console has been included in the 2020 Patrol that incorporates dual touchscreen displays. The top screen is used for the map display, whilst the lower screen allows you to access all vehicle information. This system is user-friendly and compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Over the years, the Nissan Patrol has become well known for its exceptional on and off-road handling capabilities. The 2020 model has continued this proud tradition and is more capable than ever of tackling any and all types of terrain. As soon as we started the 4.0 litre V6 engine, the sound alone let us know we were in for a treat. This beast houses the strongest V6 in its segment and produces 275 hp and 394 Nm of torque, allowing this large vehicle to move around at a surprisingly nimble pace. The All-Mode 4x4 system allows the driver to switch between various vehicle modes to provide the greatest amount of control and performance in any conditions. This high-performance vehicle delivers a smooth ride thanks to its improved suspension and vibration reduction. The overall handling, breaking and cornering capabilities of this model also proved to be of a high standard, adding to the enjoyment of the driving experience.

fact magazine

It is important to note that an array of safety features have been included in the 2020 model, including Intelligent Emergency Breaking with pedestrian detection and the Intelligent Forward Collision Warning system. These features, amongst others, help to ensure a safe journey for you and your family. By the time we arrived back at the showroom, we were definitely fans of this revitalised SUV and agreed that the Patrol has definitely levelled up to an almost premium status. With all of the exterior, interior, performance and safety improvements, the Patrol is sure to go from strength to strength and continue its remarkable run of popularity and success. ✤

WOMEN Cool minimalism may be your go-to look, but, for the holiday season, you might want to try a decadent dose of glamour – which is where the H&M womenswear Holiday 2019 collection comes in. And, whether you plan to lounge in front of an open fire or take to the dancefloor, it’s the textural touches that will raise your style game. Cream and oatmeal ribbed knits, layered upon one another, will make winter white feel utterly luxurious. When nightfall comes, it’s time to embrace the joy of dressing up: from plush velvet and jacquard suiting to glittering green sequined mini dresses, all served with dazzling rhinestones and elegant pearls. The collection’s key pieces invite considered clashes and an effortless attitude. A gently-oversized coat in cream or a chunky check has the power to entice all day long. A lightweight patterned high- neck dress works with a chunky ribbed knit by day, and with instantly energising rhinestone drop earrings come night. Similarly, a velvet tuxedo jacket works as well for a working lunch as for a last- minute party invite with matching wide-leg trousers (and for extra glamour points, pair it with a glittering sequined body-suit). Wear natural pearl hair-slides with everything – you’ll find them an energising update to any outfit. ✤ 78

Take a moment to relax in the warm embrace of luxurious heritage knits, cosy parkas and traditional checked flannel PJs. Then, as the celebration season gets underway, give party- dressing its groove back courtesy of super-slick suiting and considered flashes of animal print and paisley. Chase away wintry chills with the collection’s key pieces: a vintage-hued, denim trucker jacket with a cosy collar makes a neat match with a traditional buffalo checked shirt for outdoor days. As darkness falls, a slim-cut, inky black tuxedo jacket over an opulent paisley-printed shirt will pack a visual punch, while patterned loafers promise attitudinal after-dark allure – consider them an accent piece that will enliven a polished leather biker jacket or add edge to a charcoal checked suit. ✤

A

lto is enviably positioned on the 25th floor of the Downtown Rotana. It takes its name from the Italian word for ‘high’ which has a series of significance where this lounge is concerned. It’s lofty location, the condition of your general spirit and the level of expectation when you visit, as well as the standards maintained by the knowledgeable hosts. Alto’s essence is Arabian rather than Latin, with the décor, elixirs and menu reflecting its position globally and locally. Both the interior and exterior maximise the breathtaking views across the expanse of the city, whether viewed from inside or as a panorama from the outside terrace. The lounge draws inspiration from the Middle East, and the clever use of statement fabrics in bold and vivid shades add a sense of luxury, modernity and comfort. A variety of seating options allows you to perch or nestle and everything in between, making the setting as formal or relaxed as you would like it to be. Everything at Alto is elevated, there is nothing demure or low key about its mode of operation or its image. I defy you to visit Alto without being drawn outside by the enticing views. The vast terrace with its shady canopies and inviting booths are perfect for intimate al fresco rendezvous’ and an assemblage of your nearest and dearest or colleagues and clients. Whatever your motive or requirements, this setting will surpass your expectations. Each time of day offers an alternative version of the view, whether that be the warm hues of sunset against the skyline or the twinkling cityscape at night. The setting is perfectly complemented by the signature elixirs which are mixed and muddled to perfection. The Arabian Mojito is a revelation. It combines fresh dates, date syrup, lime, mint and ginger ale. The presentation adds another dimension to the experience, stimulating the senses in every way. Every other concoction references the location and surroundings of the lounge. For example, Saffron Mist is indicative of the aromas of the nearby souk and City Heat is evocative of the lounge’s vicinity in the heart of downtown Manama. This theme continues with Levantine Sparkle, Island Vibes and many more signature spritzers and fruity fusions. Whilst taking the opportunity to mix-and-mingle, Alto ensures there will be no need to venture further in order to satisfy your appetite. The menu is a marvellous mix of mezze staples such as hummus, mutable and muhammara and the best of casual dining favourites. The shrimp popcorn and jalapeño poppers afford the opportunity to graze and share with your companions. Pulled lamb sliders and lamb kofta or shish tawook wraps accompanied by 100 fact magazine

delicious, delicately spiced harra fries are sufficient to satisfy hunger pangs or equally turn your visit into a dining event. Alto’s aim is to take you to greater heights literally and metaphorically and this is achieved unequivocally in all aspects. Great sounds, sensational signature offerings and modish styling will not fail to impress with the most stunning backdrop for any event or occasion. ✤

G

eniality is intrinsic and seemingly congenital within Gaelic society and as we entered Irish Village, we felt a wave of warmth welcoming us. The interior is spacious and the décor blends rustic staircases, the joints bound with rope, cross sections of tree trunks and branches forming a feature wall and homely touches such as vintage photographs and crockery proudly displayed as they would be in the The Emerald Isle. Injections of colour in the form of floral fabrics and lighting add a contemporary vogueishness. A series of spaces, spread across different floors creates a relaxed atmosphere as groups gather, perched on stools around tables formed from barrels. An array of objects suspended on ropes and raffia from the ceiling further enhance the curiosity of each space. The epitome of good ‘craic’. Hearty, homely, tasty and satisfying are some of the qualities one might associate with Irish Fayre. They complement perfectly the traditional brews and beverages which are also immediately identifiable and familiar, and in abundance here. However, variety is the spice of life and is a principle that seems to have guided those who devised the menu. Should you crave something more spicy, healthy or from the smokehouse you won’t be disappointed. The chicken wings with chunky blue cheese dip were succulent and made the palate tingle. The crudites which accompanied the wings were a welcome addition providing freshness and an alternate vessel for the indulgent cheese dip. The Cobb Salad was a combination of lettuce, bell pepper, beans and corn all

topped with sour cream and guacamole. Colourful, vibrant and gratifying. Both were a taste of Americana whereas the Chicken Tikka Flatbread which we also opted for brought us firmly back to Asia. Delicately spiced and garnished and perfect for those wishing to share and dine more convivial. The traditional Irish Stew with tender pieces of lamb, root vegetables and soda bread has traditional, humble origins but the team at Irish Village have elevated it to a level which is both show and substance. Genuinely a taste of Ireland. For those wishing to stay with the theme of homely and satisfying the Smoked Pork Ribs presented on Lard Mash and accompanied by charred corn cobs is the obvious choice. Cooked to perfection so that the meat could be teased away from the bone without falling apart. Succulent and smoky. The chicken breast stuffed with bacon, sage and bread crumbs were elegantly presented, straddling honey glazed carrots, parsnips and garlic potatoes. Pan seared salmon with caper sauce and olive crushed potatoes provided a healthier, lighter option. Each retained elements of authenticity yet were drizzled and seasoned with sophistication. And so to dessert… Chocolate fondant, simple yet effective. We’re all about that additional carb life. Irish Village sits amidst varied and esteemed company on Block 338 although its unassuming confidence and homely, relaxed vibe makes it an attractive alternative to the other usual and established haunts. The menu typifies all things which are honest and outstandingly Irish as well as representing the best of the rest. A breath of fresh air, all the way from Eire. ✤

HOME COMFORTS Ask anyone in the FACT team about their go-to restaurant for quality local cuisine, where ingredients are fresh and service is always on point and they’re very likely going to say Foods at Home. F

oods at Home has become one of our ultimate local cuisine fixes and this seems to be the sentiment with diners in Bahrain; we have yet to meet anyone who feels any different. And it’s no surprise why. The restaurant’s location in a tucked away nook just off Budaiya highway is both the easiest place to reach but also the most low-key surroundings to be in. A beautiful residential villa is converted into a cosy restaurant with weaved baskets and old pictures on the wall, colourful cushions to get comfy on and tables made from antique doors – the entire set up embodies authentic vibes that you’re likely going to find in a local family’s home. Not only is it a cute place, but the food is also outstanding. What we love about the menu in Foods at Home is its consistency. It is packed with all of our favourite dishes – starters, grills, fresh salads, biryani, and every homely recipe you can dream of. Whether you’re a first-timer, a regular or someone looking to venture out and treat their palate to new flavours that represent Persian cooking and popular Bahraini dishes – Foods at Home is more than the perfect place for an introduction. Begin your experience with a range of traditional Persian dips such as Mast Khiyyar, a delicious infusion of creamy yogurt, cool cucumbers and fragrant herbs, alongside Mast Museer which literally translates to yogurt and shallots in Farsi – and is by far our favourite starter. Both dips are packed with unreal flavours and every scoop in a piece of freshly-made hot bread is a little piece of heaven. The Mirza Qasimi is an appetiser that wows us every single time. Made of aubergines seasoned with various spices, it is taste meets textural elegance on a plate. Another dish that showcases aubergines is Kashke Badenjan. Mixing the vegetable with kashk – a Persian yogurt product – this one is moreish and addictive with a more earthy penchant. The usual culprits of hummous, tabbouleh, vine leaves, fattoush salad, shirazi salad and other familiar dishes also take pride of place at Foods at Home, which serves each one to the highest standard of flavours – at least that’s how good they all taste with the fluffy bread. Foods at Home stays true to the recipes of a family matriarch who the restaurant’s menu was inspired by. It’s no wonder then that the succulent grills have become the talk of the town. Our all-time favourites include the Kabab Kubeedh served with three colour rice, the meat and chicken tikka with yogurt and Kabab Waziri which conquers the amalgamation of meat and chicken in one luscious skewer. There’s grilled fish and a whole menu of mains that can easily be the ideal choices for anyone having a family get-together or hosting visitors or friends 108 fact magazine

FOODIE CORNER •

for dinner. The Shoved Lubya can be conjured up with chicken, meat or fish and is a simple dish of green bean rice that tastes rather magical. It’s the Tahcheen that impresses us – a Persian rice cake primarily consisting of rice, yogurt, saffron, and eggs – here the dish is made elaborate by folding in your choice of prawns or chicken. There’s machboos, biryani, qouzi, and pilou items that tick all the boxes for your everyday rice cravings. In particular, the mighty Mahicheh Baqala Pilou is tender lamb shank that will leave any meat-lover speechless. You can also savour a range of curries, pasta and nawashef which all feature classics like korma sabzi, qeema, lentils, liver and more mouthwatering mains. The Khoresht Badenjan was a delightful curry that satisfied our cravings with a side of rice – highly recommended. The restaurant’s fresh juices range from the classic orange and watermelon to the more unique such as the saffron sherbet and Foods at Home cocktail. Hot drinks add a sense of café culture to the venue, and we would suggest ordering a pot of Iranian Tea to share after your meal. Not only is it a comforting sip, it’s great for digestion too. And if you’ve got room for dessert, the Ranginak with Ice Cream would be our first pick. A rich and energising Persian date and walnut cake, it’s textural bliss with every spoonful. The portions in Foods at Home are super generous. We’re talking enough to easily fill up three to four people in one sitting. This is exactly what makes things great; there is an encouraged sense of sharing and gives diners the opportunity to order a number of different dishes to try. A reliable team of waiters keeps the service and general good vibes flowing at a professional and friendly pace – we always feel like we’re at home in our own living rooms when we visit Foods at Home – and there really is no better feeling than this. The restaurant has recently expanded to include a greenhouseesque extension which gives the illusion of being outdoors – no doubt a result of its continuous growing popularity. At FACT, we’re proud to have been a part of the culinary journey and organic growth of Foods at Home, and as long as the food is fresh, hot and cooked with love, you’ll always find us seated at their table. ✤

Running Right Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidencebased management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

There are many benefits when you keep yourself fit by running every day, but as all runners know, “No Pain, No Gain.” The components of a training programme should not only build up your running endurance, but also help prevent injuries from occurring. The most common mistake that I see made by athletes is a sudden change in their load or training pattern which causes excessive tissue breakdown and leads to injury. These are a few basic rules to ensure that your body has time to adapt, strengthen and also help prevent injuries from occurring: - Allow your body enough time to recover after a heavy running session. - Never increase your overall weekly running distance by more than 15% on the previous week. - The surface on which you run will likely have an effect on your running pattern. Try running 50% of your weekly kilometres on the race day surface, and the rest on a softer surface like grass or athletic tracks. - Find a comfortable, supportive and well-suited shoe for your foot-type. It is also really important that you gradually wear your shoes in. - Some careful lower body strengthen exercises can actually help you to achieve your goal and keep your injury-free in the process. A well-rounded workout and recovery programme is critical for you to properly prepare and enjoy your race. ✤

It’s Holiday Time Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

So, the festive season is once again upon us; and I’m sure some of you can’t wait to just kick off your shoes and have a nice rest. The shops are full of temptations, the Christmas trees are up, Christmas parties and New Year’s parties are everywhere, and the alcohol is flowing. But, don’t go overboard with alcohol just yet as you still need to fit into those fabulous holiday season outfits. “Scrooge” I hear you shout but I like to think of myself as more of a Fairy Godmother. I don’t want to be a killjoy; I just want you to be careful about what you’re putting into your body because the moment January 2 arrives, you’ll all be thinking of your summer holidays and how you’re going to reverse the damage you did over the festive season. Just don’t stop exercising. Go for the healthier versions if you’re going to a Christmas Brunch and drink plenty of water as it gives your body the illusion that it’s fuller than it really is. Try and stick to the turkey and stay away from red meats if you eat meat. Get as much exercise in as you can leading up to Christmas and try and stick to healthy snacks such as nuts, raisins, cucumber sticks, and healthy dips like hummus or guacamole. So, go shopping for your party clothes, party hard and see the New Year in with a fit and healthy body. Happy New Year everyone! ✤

‘Tis the Season Aanchal Duggal is an avid bibliophile and fashion enthusiast trying to make a living out of doing what she loves. Aanchal is new to Bahrain & exploring!

While food has always been one of my life’s greatest pleasures, I never knew what true decadence is until I tucked into an all-American traditional Thanksgiving feast. Brimming with flavour and home cooked goodness, people here love to go above and when it comes to their Thanksgiving meals. When I was very graciously invited by my friend to spend Thanksgiving with her family, I could have never imagined the deliciousness that awaited me. Featuring everything from perfectly cooked turkey and stuffing to pumpkin pie and double baked potato casserole, the extensive spread was reminiscent of all the Iftars and Ghabgas back home. Food truly is the great equaliser. As I was stuffing my face with a second helping of pie, my friend’s mother informed me that she had spent the past two days preparing and cooking everything from scratch. The importance of food and family during this festive time reminded me of my mom’s home cooked meals and all the good times I shared with my friends and family. Enveloped in warmth and togetherness in a foreign land, I was thankful to be indulging in this special meal, and grateful to be able to immerse myself in a whole another culture at my home away from home. ✤

Leslie Arlen Garduque Managing Director at Media Circuit Global

Tell us more about your day-to-day role and what keeps it challenging and exciting... Being an entrepreneur is a daily struggle. I may have a great team who handles office operations but at the end of the day, I still play different roles. I am not just the company's Managing Director, I am also the HR manager, the sales executive, the head of accounts, the project manager. The list goes on. The challenging part, I guess, is the decision-making. I make daily decisions, be it big or small, all in hope of pushing the company forward.

What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Bahrain and why? I am currently loving Water Garden City. Apart from its proximity to my office, the area has an adequate mix of infrastructures and water features - as well as several options of waterfront dining experiences. It's perfect for morning or afternoon coffee or late-night dinners. Plus, it has that relaxation vibe that I direly need after a very busy day at work. Most importantly, this development marks Bahrain's expanding economic and cultural growth, and a boost in the Kingdom's economy is always a good thing for entrepreneurs like myself.

Share with us some of your professional goals for 2020... I am looking into expanding the services that my company, Media Circuit, offers. We are currently very focused on Events Management and PR and the coming year might be a good time to delve into expansion. I won't say anything specific for now but there are a lot of plans in the pipeline for Year 2020.
