Feel the Love

"Without Valentine's Day, February would be… well, January." - Jim Gaffigan

A

nd just like that, the month of love – and the year’s most divisive holiday – is upon us. But how many of us have actually paused to consider how we’ll celebrate? The start of the new year has been complicated, to say the least, leaving little room to debate the merits of flowers over chocolates. At FACT, however, we’re dubbing present day the perfect opportunity to journey back to the '90s. Why? I’m glad you asked. The year 1992 brought the term ‘love languages’ into our lives, courtesy of a book entitled The Five Love Languages. At last count, more than 12 million copies of the New York Times bestseller by Gary Chapman had been sold, prompting over 12 million people to discover their primary love language i.e. not only how they show affection, but also prefer to receive it. Now, a manual on love written by a Southern Baptist pastor is admittedly unexpected, but what few realise is that he was also a marriage counsellor for 40 years. And because you don’t have the time to sift through 208 pages, we're revealing the five love languages, what they mean, and how you can speak them in this month's cover story (p16). You're welcome. Elsewhere in the issue, we're uncovering new stores (p14), beauty launches (p76), and culinary offerings (p60 around town before taking a spin in the new Kodiaq (p38). Not enough people are familiar with Czech marque Škoda in this part of the world – and that's where we come in. We've also dined around the island in the name of research, sampling everything from sashimi and mochi at Maison Sushi (p52) to bruschetta and arancini at Primavera (p48). Because good food makes everything better, right?

Pieces of a Woman

BIG SCREEN Bridgerton Need to Know:

A Netflix original set against the backdrop of Regencyera England, where securing a husband is the most noteworthy thing a woman can do.

Creator: Chris Van Dusen Cast: Adjoa Andoh, Jonathan Bailey, Phoebe Dynevor, Ruby Barker

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Pause your promenading through the gardens as you press play on London's 19th century "marriage market". Bridgerton, based on the eight-novel series by Julia Quinn, is a world of beautiful dresses, dreamy balls, delicious gossip, and tug of war between women as they secure their future husbands as if it were a matter of life or death. Think of it as Gossip Girl circa Regency era, as the newsletters of unknown gossip columnist Lady Whistledown (narrated by none other than Julie Andrews) become the talk of the town. Although no one knows who Whistledown is, her words become gospel as she fixates on the season's debutantes. One particular debutante is Daphne, the eldest daughter of the Bridgerton family, whom the queen herself remarks as flawless. In the hopes to find her true love, we embark on a tale rife with romance, scandal, and betrayal. What more do we need? Well, a dashing duke to steal our protagonist's heart, for starters. Another family also steals the spotlight, the Featheringtons, with their beautiful distant cousin Marina Thompson holding onto a secret – and who better to uncover that secret than Lady Whistledown? This whirlwind affair does so much more than tug at our heartstrings; it leaves us with a rollercoaster of emotions, a happy ending, and the identity of Lady Whistledown, which alone should prompt a second season.

Need to Know:

This is a tale of grief told via the most grappling narrative, with emotions ranging from happiness to sorrow, anger, loneliness, and detachment.

A couple’s life takes an immediate turn after a tragic homebirth, thus beginning a year-long odyssey for the mother as she struggles with her relationships and the realities of life.

Director: Kornél Mundruczó Cast: Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, Ellen

Burstyn, Molly Parker

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Motherhood is never easy, especially when the notion is taken away before it can even fully begin. Starring as Martha, Vanessa Kirby gives us a chilling performance in this mournful melodrama. The first 30 minutes of this Netflix film alone are noteworthy, featuring a brilliantly filmed birth sequence that was captured in one take and spans both the anticipation of joy and horror of reality. Martha goes into labour and with the help of her husband, Sean (Shia LaBeouf), secures an alternate midwife (Molly Parker) since her first choice was preoccupied with another birth. We follow the uninterrupted clip from start to finish, witnessing the many emotions a person can go through in one moment in time, ending in dismay upon the death of the newborn child. This is where the real story begins. We follow the couple's fallout as they both grieve in their own ways, and making matters worse is Martha’s meddling mother, who insists on taking legal action against the midwife for negligence. If the storyline doesn’t convince you, then Kirby’s performance should. She comes in like the calm before the storm – even when she’s doing nothing at all, it’s like waiting for a volcano to erupt.

By Jennifer Robson Jennifer Robson’s Our Darkest Night is a tale of love, sacrifice, and survival as she vividly evokes the most perilous days of World War II. Set across the backdrop of the Holocaust, an intelligent young Jewish woman named Nina must pose as the wife of a Christian farmer to save her life. Together, they must appear as a happily wedded couple to their neighbours and a local Nazi official. As the charade continues, their feelings deepen with time, with the looming fear of being torn apart at any moment. Both heartbreaking and heartfelt, this stunningly intimate prose creates a haunting story that will linger in the reader's mind long after the last page is turned.

Speak the Language The term ‘love languages’ comes from the book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate by Gary Chapman, first published in 1992. These five languages of love are five different ways of expressing and receiving love: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Here, we dive deep into each language and show you the little things you can do to make your relationship stronger. And remember — this isn’t about your love language, it’s about your partner’s.

Words of Affirmation

Words speak louder than actions for those whose love language is highly concentrated in this section. These people love spontaneous compliments and pet names, and cherish the simple three words “I love you” more than most – even more if they’re told the reasons why they’re loved. 26

I

f you or your loved one fall in this category, then kind words mean the world to you or them. Getting a compliment automatically boosts their day and giving appreciation for all they do will fall like rain on parched soil. Before long, you’ll see the seeds of your love sprouting up in your relationship as your better half responds with positivity. This includes compliments, words of appreciation, and verbal encouragement. A concept in psychology suggests that using affirmative words increases our brain functions, resulting in an increase in cognitive reasoning and strengthened frontal lobes. But be wary; hateful comments make just as big of an impact – or even more – as loving statements. Now, this doesn’t mean that you constantly need to express your love, reinforce your appreciation, or praise them like a child for washing their hands or brushing their teeth. Instead, your words need to be meaningful and used in situations where work was done, or when you feel they need a little pick-me-up. This love language doesn’t require you to go out of your way – just a little attention. These words of affirmation are not to boost their pride. Trust us, these words do not go to their head. It’s not even about using flattery to win the other person over. “The object of love is not getting something you want, but doing something for the wellbeing of the one you love,” notes Chapman in his book. This love language builds up the confidence of your partner and lets them know that their actions and presence do not go unnoticed. Here are some simple ways and tips on how to be fluent in this language.

your emotions through words. We suggest being yourself. Be witty, be funny, be romantic – it’s up to you. All you need to be sure about is speaking from the heart. Love is not one size fits all, so do what you can and see what they respond to. This also brings us to recognising your partner’s emotions. Think about what it would be like to walk in their shoes and show them that you empathise with them through your words, no matter how big or small the situation.

Post a Note/Letter There’s something special about hand-written words – they add a touch of romance. Place Post-it notes on the bathroom mirror, send them a sweet message out of the blue, or write them a silly poem. For even more romance in your life, extend that Post-it into a letter (no, not an e-mail). This can be a great way to commemorate special occasions and will create a memento to help remember the day forever. ✤

Physical Touch Not only are people of this love language happy when they see you around, but they also need physical confirmation that you’re there. It is the non-verbal love language that focuses more on physical intimacy.

28

fact magazine

COVER STORY •

T

ouch is one of the strongest and earliest sensory languages, and one that we’re introduced to immediately upon birth. As an infant, we understand who our mother is and her love just by the warmth of her skin. A baby, when crying or bothered, will seek its mother’s touch – and we’re not much different as adults. “When you reach out with tender touch, you create emotional closeness,” says Chapman in his book. Physical touch doesn’t have to be very intimate, and there is way more to the notion of physical touch than what we think. Expressions of physical touch don’t necessarily have to lead to intimacy. It can be as simple as a hand squeeze when your partner is anxious, a brush on the arm as you pass by, or just holding hands while walking around a supermarket. It can even be sitting side by side with your arms touching. For those who understand physical touch, this sounds like a no-brainer, but if you don’t, doing this unconsciously is hard. Basically, having touch as a love language means that all physical gestures matter more than gifts or saying, “I love you.” This person can be taken on the most extravagant date, but still only feel butterflies when cuddled up in bed together. Your constant physical contact assures them that you are there, you are present, and they are cherished. And that is enough. Here are some simple ways and tips on how to be fluent in this language.

Non-Intimate Touch Despite what you may have learnt through movies or past experiences, there are different levels of intimacy – and intimacy isn’t everything. Learn what touch makes your partner feel most loved and remember, what works for you may not work for them. A hug or kiss seems to be the universal act of love, but everyone

still has their preferences. For some, it’s as simple as a touch on the shoulder.

PDA Level Even if your significant other basks in this love language, remember to make sure that it’s comfortable for both of you. If you’re not the touchy-feely or PDA type, then meet in the middle when you’re out on the town. Give their hand an affectionate squeeze if you’re not comfortable holding it throughout in public or sit on the same side of the table if you’re dining out. But remember that it’s a twoway street – you need to be mindful of their love language and they should be mindful of yours. ✤ fact magazine

Receiving Gifts This language has a bad reputation for being materialistic, but it’s more heartfelt than you might think. It’s more about the thought behind the present – which is symbolic of love and affection – than its value.

COVER STORY •

O

f all the love languages, the act of receiving gifts is undoubtedly the most misunderstood. While giftgiving in most circumstances is known to be more materialistic, it’s more symbolic as a love language. In his book, Chapman observes: “From early years, children are inclined to give gifts to their parents, which may be another indication that gift-giving is fundamental to love. Gifts are visual symbols of love.” Take a walk down memory lane to a time when you would hide in your room making birthday cards and macaroni necklaces for your parents – it was your way of showing them that you cared. And even though those handmade cards and gifts would be worth next to nothing in monetary value, they were still proudly displayed around the house, symbolising just how important you and your gesture were. This is further emphasised by Chapman as he refers to such gifts as “visual symbols of love”. Gift-giving is present in almost every culture in the world, especially in the love-then-marriage process, the most familiar symbols being the exchange of rings between a bride and groom. You will notice how many couples place a lot of importance on these rings, never taking them off. This is not because of their monetary value, but the meaning they carry. Here are some simple ways and tips on how to be fluent in this language.

More than Materialism At a time when many of us are trying to practice minimalism and disregarding objects that don’t ‘bring us joy’, the notion of receiving gifts can be thought of as materialistic and unnecessary.

Cynics also label this as ‘buying’ love. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. This love places the intangible aspects of gift-giving higher than the tangible ones. It’s not only about the action, but also the process. It shows a person that their partner is thinking about them and made the effort to show it. The monetary value of the present is rarely an issue; even a bar of their favourite chocolate or a single flower can be enough to make their day. After all, it’s the intention behind the gesture that matters.

Mark Your Calendar The people high in this love language tend to take birthdays and anniversaries seriously, which might put some pressure on partners who do not share the same celebratory ideals. However, these are prime gift-giving occasions that shouldn’t be missed. A word to the wise: setting reminders on the calendar in your phone can go a long way in case you tend to forget momentous dates. ✤

T

his expression of love has an emphasis on quality over quantity, revolving around togetherness without any interference from external factors. We suggest that you put down your phone, turn off the TV, and focus on them when you’re with your partner. Chapman explains, “Quality time is giving someone your undivided attention. I don’t mean sitting on the couch watching television. I mean sitting on the couch with the TV off, looking at each other and talking.” Of course, couples spend time together, but it’s the quality of time that matters to this group – no distractions, no other people, just you two. People in this group strive for focused attention. It’s not enough being in the same vicinity; they need you to give them your eyes and ears with full attentiveness. Quality time for someone with this love language means taking time to go on walks with one another, speak to one another, and just be there. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, not for everyone. The other languages, when assessed properly, are easy to figure out. And once you and your partner understand what each of you need – be it gifts or words of affirmation – it’s just about following through with the action. And quality time proves to be more tricky than most, just because it is literally that – time. And lots of it. The world is moving faster and our lives are engulfed in work, home chores, and social or family obligations, making the simplest act the hardest. Here are some simple ways and tips on how to be fluent in this language.

Beginning and Endings Make it a habit to begin and end your day together. Start your day off by making and eating breakfast before work, meditating, or just chatting for a couple of minutes in bed. The same can be done at the end of the day. Turn off all your devices and let the stress of the

day flow out in conversation. Chapman suggests, “After work, set aside 10 minutes to catch up – no phones allowed.” This way, you’ll be able to connect with your partner on a daily basis, making them feel fulfilled and appreciated. Now, not all routines will be able to allow this, but even the slightest effort to spend time with them will not go unnoticed.

Be Present By now, we all know that technology is a big no-no when it comes to people whose primary love language is quality time. They know that time is always limited, and tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, therefore they see the concept of time as a priceless gift that needs to be cherished. Be present and interested in what they have to say, ask questions, ask follow-up questions, and let them know that you will prioritise them over everyone and everything else. ✤

Acts of Service They say actions speak louder than words and, for some people, that is particularly true when showing acts of love. It’s the non-verbal form of love that can be time-consuming, but if it’s what your partner needs, then that’s what they shall receive.

Go Beyond the House Not every act of service revolves around household chores, which is the biggest misconception around this language. Yes, it’s a labour of love, but the labour doesn’t need to be fatiguing. And sure, everyone appreciates coming back to a clean home and tidy bed, but this language can be as simple as grabbing them a bottle of water when you get one for yourself. Go beyond the daily chores of the house by filling up the car’s gas tank on your way home so they don’t have to in the morning.

Communicate

A

sk your spouse which of these three scenarios would fill their heart with love and joy if they were to come home after a weekend away:

You don’t need to be a mind reader; simply ask your partner what you can do to make their day a little easier. If you see they’re working late, ask them if they’d like to sleep in the next morning while you take the dog for a walk instead. According to Chapman, people who prefer acts of service appreciate nothing more than hearing, “Let me do that for you.” It’s the thought behind the action that counts – the action just affirms it. ✤

A. You immediately tell them that they were missed B. The house is clean and there’s a warm meal on the table C. You jump and embrace them in a big, squishy hug We’re pretty sure they’ll appreciate all of the above, but if they chose option B, then acts of service is likely their love language. For this demographic, saying “I love you” doesn’t guarantee that the speaker means it – they need to see actions to believe it. But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that your partner is lazy and wants you to do all the heavy lifting. In fact, they’re most likely selfsufficient and super motivated. This is actually why acts of service is their love language. They simply want you to step in a little to help and lighten their burden – to them, that is real love. It’s not about the deed itself, but working together to attain a goal. It’s important to note that acts of service aren’t about helping around the house or becoming a butler to your significant other. You need to work with them, not for them. It’s about creating an equal partnership. “Love is something you do for someone else, not something you do for yourself,” adds Chapman. So, make the bed even if they woke up after you or organise their laundry if you know they have a full day ahead. Here are some more simple ways and tips on how to be fluent in this language.

O

ver the years, we at FACT magazine have had the privilege of test driving an extensive array of vehicles produced by a large number of brands. In some cases, we’ve been lucky enough to experience several models from a single marque. However, every now and then, we get the opportunity to experience something completely new. This month, thanks to our friends at Behbehani Brothers, we got behind the wheel of the new Kodiaq, our foray into test driving a model by Czech automaker Škoda. The precise, sharp lines of the Kodiaq’s exterior design endow the vehicle with a muscular beauty, ensuring it radiates an essence of both power and prestige. This 4x4 SUV is as robust as it is beautiful and looks equally at home on the city streets as the mountain trails. The raised central strip of the bonnet draws the eyes down to its full LED headlights, whilst the sharply drawn fog lamps are located at the height of the radiator grille for protection during off-road adventures. At the sides, the sharp edges combined with smooth surfaces create an interplay of light and shadow, whilst the square wheel arches and protective sill covers add to the vehicle’s all-terrain capabilities. Also noteworthy are the 20-inch Xtreme anthracite alloy wheels that are fitted as standard. From the rear, the vertical black extensions merge with the roof spoiler and border the rear window, thereby improving the aerodynamics of the Kodiaq. Silver roof railings highlight the appeal of its exterior, whilst the LED crystalline rear lights are deep-seated into the fenders. Slipping inside the vehicle, we were greeted by a comfortable environment that felt organised and spacious. Ambient lights run along the inside of the car and, with 10 colour options available, the mood can be set for whatever journey lies ahead. A panoramic sunroof supplies the option of additional natural light as well as an abundance of fresh air. All of the materials used are of a good quality, the front seats offer plenty of support, and the multifunction sports steering in perforated leather wheel feels great in hand. We found the Škoda Connect infotainment system to be intuitive, user-friendly, and easy to navigate. The rear seating of the seven-seater model has plenty of head, leg, and shoulder room on offer, and up to seven people can comfortably travel in the three-row seven-seater Kodiaq. This vehicle has obviously been designed with road trips in mind as it provides a multitude of storage spaces – there’s a jumbo box storage compartment in the front armrest, an upper storage compartment by the front passenger seat, another storage compartment in the lower part of the dashboard, and a driver’s storage box located directly below the steering wheel. There are also front door compartments, a sunglasses compartment above the interior rear-view mirror, bottle and mobile phone holders as well as a removable unibag designed for transporting longer items. The boot itself is electronically operated and offers 835 litres of luggage space, which increases to 2065 litres with the rear seats folded down. This compartment also offers a variety of hooks and nets to secure goods, and sports a double floor that places the bottom of the luggage compartment on the loading edge level, allowing for easier handling of cargo. By the time we started up the Kodiaq’s sporty-sounding 2.0 TSI 40

fact magazine

turbocharged petrol engine, we were more than ready to hit the tarmac. This capable engine produces 132KW 180 horsepower. and 320Nm of torque. This – coupled with an automatic sevenspeed DSG transmission – enables the 4x4 to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds and reach a respectable top speed of 212km/h. The Kodiaq handles very well, even on the sharpest of bends. Its responsiveness ensures that the driver always feels in complete control of the driving experience, a feeling enhanced by the solid braking system. Although we spent only a little time in an off-road environment, the all-terrain capabilities of this SUV were obvious. We couldn’t help but wish we had more time and a mountain dirt road to play with. The Kodiaq has also been equipped with an array of drive and safety assist features to keep passengers safe on the roads. These include the Travel Assist system, predictive adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane assist, traffic sign recognition, rear traffic alert, park assist, crew protect assist, and multi-collision brake as well as a multitude of airbags throughout the cabin. You can rest easy knowing that the expert craftsmen at Škoda have kept the well-being of you and your family at the forefront of the vehicle’s design. ✤

5 OVER 5 •

Please tell us a bit about your educational and business background? I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Westminster, London. After completing my studies in 2006, I returned to Bahrain and joined the family business, which is predominantly in the real estate and hospitality sectors. Are you involved with any other businesses and, if so, what are they and how – if at all – do they synergise with the app? I remain involved with the family business, but during the past two years, my focus has shifted to the creation and development of the HomeX App. My background in real estate management gave me valuable insight into the world of property maintenance and improvement. This experience helped me realise the importance of the proper upkeep of properties to ensure their longevity, appeal, and value retention. How did the idea for the app come about? I needed some emergency maintenance work to be done at my house on a weekend. The service provider that I usually deal with was unavailable at the time, so I ended up having to ask friends and search online. Out of all the companies I called, only two responded! The first was not interested in the job and the second was not available until after the weekend. I found the process extremely outdated and inefficient, especially in this day and age. This frustrating experience inspired me to create an app that would instantly connect people looking for any kind of property maintenance and improvement service with willing and qualified service professionals.

What are the features that make HomeX better than the conventional alternatives? HomeX provides customers with a platform that connects them with 60-plus specialised and professional service providers who can offer more than 50 different kinds of maintenance and improvement services that specifically match their requirements. These range from electrical and plumbing to painting and wallpapering services as well as cleaning and sanitation, handymen, and locksmiths. Users can also benefit from the 24/7 emergency services that are available on the app. No upfront membership fees are required to use the app. Additionally, customers are not charged any service fees by HomeX. Users simply have to pay for the service they need when they need it. Up to three quotes can be requested from three different service providers for any given job. This gives users the flexibility to select the most suitable option for them. How long has the app been operational and do you have any further developments planned for the future? We launched the app in October 2020 and will soon be adding some new features and updates that will make the user experience even more streamlined. Additionally, we are soon going to roll out a web portal that will cater to property owners/managers for leased properties. Our short-term plan is to gain more market awareness and build an active user base in Bahrain and our long-term plan is to scale HomeX regionally by penetrating other GCC markets and beyond. ✤ fact magazine

ntering the revolving doors of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain will forever be as exciting as the first time simply because you know what awaits: pure joy. Amidst the many dining options offering Italian flavours around the island, Primavera will always be a crown jewel. Casual yet classy with a familial and warm atmosphere, its indoor space features dim lighting and multiple seating choices, while the inviting terrace offers privacy amongst olive trees. As for the open kitchen? It allows sporadic glimpses into the non-stop action, which you can learn more about with the help of the welcoming and extremely friendly staff. Not only can they make menu recommendations and guide you on ingredient specifics, but they’re also well-informed on any new dishes and weekend specials on offer. And if our last jaunt to Primavera is any indication, loyal patrons can frequently look forward to both. In what felt like a ‘special’ corner, we were seated on a large table that can comfortably accommodate eight people, the opulence of light and a great deal of privacy only adding to its appeal. A basket of warm bread soon gave company to the candlelight, making for the perfect start to a perfect meal. Add some extravirgin olive oil and a little bit of balsamic vinegar, and it’s a starter that we’ll never tire of. The Mamma Mia platter is perfect if you’re dining out as a group and looking to try a bit of everything. balls are a guaranteed crowdpleaser, and the prosciutto is always predictably delicate. Meanwhile, the trio of sides – sundried tomatoes, black olives, and parmesan cheese – is the perfect complement to practically every other dish on the table. Personally, I couldn’t get enough of the quinoa and baby spinach salad – that dressing alone proves not all salads are boring. It also pairs perfectly with the rich pumpkin risotto that’s accented with burrata and tomato confit. Next came the ravioli stuffed with beef and served with sage and a creamy, cheesy white sauce. Depending on when you end up at Primavera, the weekly menu may call for ravioli with a mascarpone cheese filling and slowcooked tomato sauce. I’d be stumped if you asked me which I prefer more! One of the special main courses is the stuffed calamari with avocado purée and beetroot sauce, a veritable must-try for the pescatarians amongst us. If you prefer fish, the seabass platter that entails a perfectly pan-fried piece of fish served on a generous bed of creamy polenta is a satisfying choice. But regardless of how well-rounded the mains are, you must leave room for dessert. After all, sharing the decadent trio of tiramisu, panna cotta, and chocolate tart is an act of love. This pleasing array of flavours and textures has it all – notes of coffee, a touch of citrus, and dark chocolate aplenty. My advice? Order an espresso to enhance your overall dessert experience. Primavera ought to reside on the culinary radar of singles, couples, and families alike. It really does offer it all: authentic

We start with the Hummus Beiruti and Fattoush Salad, our tastebuds secretly screaming in ecstasy, courtesy of all those rich umami flavours. Beautifully presented with the freshest house-made pita bread, the starters alone have stolen our hearts. After eagerly awaiting the next surprise, we find it far from surprising that Beach Deck continues to outdo itself. Out come a couple of lemon-marinated lamb skewers that are charcoalgrilled to perfection and accompanied by a kachumber salad. Even the plating is extra, but we’re not complaining! We also delve into the Chicken Shawarma Rolls – another crowd favourite – that are stuffed to the brim with perfectly spiced chicken, pickles, garlic, and tahini sauce. Are we stuffed? Yes. Are we happy to carry on? Hell yes! Perfect for the setting at Beach Deck, the casual fare served here is appropriately portioned and ideal for the location, making it a great locale for guests to enjoy the weather, and take in the sparkling skyline. Not to forget the selection of refreshing mocktails that pair beautifully with the food, which is hardly a coincidence. In fact, we might just return for a second round of the Coco Passion mocktail. Somewhere between super sweet and sort of tart, it is made with passion fruit juice, coconut, and orgeat syrup, and has us really feeling like a real island stereotype – but in the best way. Ending the evening on a sweet and smoky note is practically obligatory in Bahrain and if you opt for the disposable shisha, you get to take it home after. Genius. Pipe in hand, we dive into the Kunafa that’s drenched in honey and served with a side of pistachio ice cream. A series of strong winds comes and goes and, through it all, the staff keep us warm with heaters and shawls – now that’s service. ✤

lashing prints, vibrant colour palettes, and bohemia aplenty are no strangers at Etro, their presence only reinforced by the pandemic. Spearheaded by menswear creative director Kean Etro, the Italian brand’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection for men has adopted a new attitude – one that is optimistic yet realistic about what makes the fashion house relevant for today’s consumers. Presented virtually at Milan Fashion Week, it’s a tribute to the calm and sun after the storm, the storm being the pandemic and the sun being the new collection. A sense of freedom runs through the lineup, where established rules are broken to create a fresh, immediate, and appealing vocabulary of iconic pieces to mix and match with a frisky approach. It blurs the line between daywear and eveningwear, blending function and aesthetics to take the street with a fierce, bold attitude. Impeccable blazers with cadet details and robe coats in rich fabrications are layered on colour-blocked sporty anoraks adorned with discreet paisley patterns. Recycled wool maxi sweaters find place next to shirts featuring collars made of archival silk linings, while the Pegaso logo pops up on bomber jackets and oversized hoodies. We also see the street-cool appeal of baggy utility denim pants splashed with cashmere motifs counterbalanced by the impeccable sartorial sophistication of camel coats and double-breasted suits featuring deconstructed fluid silhouettes. The label’s vintage upholstery textiles helped craft quilted jackets, while pyjamainspired piping details enrich shirts. Retro sport-inspired logo bands run down the legs of nylon track pants, giving way to the footwear selection, where clashing contrasts reside. Here, beautifully constructed brogues and loafers are punctuated by studs, juxtaposed to patchwork sneakers with neon laces. Elsewhere in accessories, mandalas and paisley patterns stand out on highly functional backpacks, pouches, and crossbody bags with multiple pockets on the straps to carry everyday essentials. Above all, these looks call for an attitude that no one wants to mess with – and we’re all for it. ✤ fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About Bernie Sanders Meme

COVID-19 Vaccine

Larry King

Despite numerous attempts from the previous administration to overturn a highly controversial election, Joe Biden was officially sworn in as the 46th president of the United States of America on January 20, becoming the oldest sitting president in history. However, between ongoing social unrest and over 25 million coronavirus infections, to say he has inherited a turbulent America is an understatement. In fact, President Biden signed over 30 executive orders in the first three days of his presidency alone, several of them merely hours

Nations around the globe have been scrambling to either procure, produce, or approve a vaccine since the beginning of the pandemic, with everyone wanting to get their (sanitised) hands on it. Now, nearly one year later, that struggle has finally yielded fruit in the form of vaccines like Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Oxford-AstraZeneca, and Sputnik V. While most (if not all) of us are anxiously awaiting a jab, it’s important to note that the vaccine is not a cure for COVID-19 – nor will it end the pandemic. It essentially trains the immune system to

There are only a handful of television hosts that can be dubbed TV legends, and the world is still mourning the loss of one of the best. Larry King passed away at age 87 on January 23 after a 25-year reign on CNN’s Larry King Live. Not only did he conduct over 50,000 interviews in his sixdecade career – speaking to the likes of athletes, celebrities, and everyday people – but he also interviewed every sitting US president from Gerald Ford to Barack Obama. King was a giant in an era of television's prime years with

after the inauguration. Comic relief, meanwhile, continues in the form of Bernie-Sanders-on-inauguration-day memes, with the US senator reacting with surprise at his photo going viral. “I was just sitting there, trying to keep warm, trying to pay attention to what was going on,” he told Seth Meyers when asked about becoming a meme. He also shared an anecdote about the woman who made his (now famous) mittens, revealing, "She is a school teacher and a very, very nice person, and she has been somewhat overwhelmed by the kind of attention that is being shown to her mittens."

fight the virus. Approximately 63 million vaccine doses have been administered in 56 countries worldwide at the time of writing, yet several low-income countries have yet to see a single dose, prompting the Director-General of WHO warning of a “catastrophic moral failure” if the inequitable distribution continues. “The price of this failure will be paid with lives and livelihoods in the world’s poorest countries. It’s not right that younger healthier adults in rich countries are vaccinated before health workers and older people in poorer countries,” he said of the ethical dilemma.

his prodding questions and easygoing demeanour. He passed away at CedarsSinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Ora Media, a production company that he co-founded. Reports show that he was recently treated for COVID-19, just after having faced severe health problems in recent years. Care for an interesting fact? He married eight times and had five children, two of whom passed away last year within weeks of each other. To quote how he signed off after the final Larry King Live episode: “Instead of goodbye, so long.”
