It turns out that, after an entire month of typing the word Valentine’s hundreds of times, I’m still no closer to figuring out how I really feel about this annual and very “official” celebration of love. On one hand, February 14 in all its candy, card and flowers glory is a commercially-driven, pressure-imposing day, and on the other it’s when love-budding wild hearts, both young and old, get to do something special for one another. Who wants to get bitter about that? Not me. For all the right reasons, Valentine’s Day in Bahrain can be your most memorable yet. Spring of Culture: The Spring of Culture is back with a jam-packed calendar of exciting shows as top artists in the field of dance, theatre, art, and music as well as other cultural activities, are all set to take place across the country. These happenings highlight the Kingdom of Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage and unique historic and civil landmarks, while at the same time presenting to residents and visitors, boundless opportunities for education, exploration, and entertainment! Spring of Culture is organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, the Economic Development Board, and Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research, in collaboration with Albareh Art Gallery, Al Riwaq Art Space, and La Fontaine Art Centre. This year’s programme coincides with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities’ new slogan, under the theme of “Our Year of Archaeology”, highlighting the 12

The exhibition runs for eight weeks, extending itself to the time of spring of culture. This year, the exhibition has opened its doors to welcome artists from all around the world residing in the country, for the

organisers believe that art has no country or boundaries. There is also a competition; international jury members evaluate the works and three prizes are offered! Gazing at the Contemporary World: Japanese Photography from 1970s to the Present: This outstanding exhibition at Bahrain National Museum presents the essence of contemporary Japanese photography, which reflects unique Japanese concepts and approaches while honestly dealing with issues of contemporary photographic expression shared throughout the world. The collection focuses on two main concepts; Changing Society and Changing Landscapes, through the works of 24 Japanese artists. This Exhibition is held in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy in Bahrain and runs until February 25. ✤

here is no doubt that the Lincoln Brand has gone above and beyond when it comes to providing luxury vehicles. With the MKX, the company has firmly established itself as a contender in the midsize luxury SUV division. Upon our initial external inspection, we were impressed by what greeted us. All of the vehicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lines and curves blend together for a smooth finish. Proud, wide shoulders, dynamic side undercuts and belt lines, and clever touches such as the integrated antenna, all underscore a sophisticated and powerful appearance. This vehicle has a real presence, one which cannot be ignored, especially on the road. The interior was next on our list of scrutiny and once inside the vehicle, we were shortly singing its praises. High quality materials is what we find. Special mention has to go to the door panels with their soft surfaces complimented by metal and wooden accents. The designers have included a push button gear select, which opens up space, allowing for a small cubby hole with a USB port inside. Another great feature is the drive and reverse buttons positioned close to the steering wheel, allowing for easy manoeuvring especially during three-point turns.

In fact, the more we looked, the more remarkable technology we observed. The MKX includes a 360-degree camera. The system uses the camera in the front, back and sides of the vehicle to create a top down view of what’s around the car for easier parking. Our favourite feature however was the amazing sound system! The MKX’s 19 speaker Revel Ultima System is complete with QuantumLogic surround sound. Even the toughest audio critic would battle not to appreciate the quality of this offering. Both the front and rear areas of this Lincoln are very comfortable, complete with soft and supple leather. Amenities in the back include heated seats and two USB charger ports. The front seats have the same warming abilities, along with the steering wheel. The boot has a very useful automatic liftgate. You merely have to kick your foot gently under the rear of the vehicle for the boot to open, very handy with two hands full of children, groceries or both. Once open, the 37.2 cubic feet of space is ample, a space made all-the-more generous once the back seats are down, a process completed by a simple push of a button. This extends the

cargo area to 68.8 cubic feet of space. The comfort found within extends to the driving experience itself. The MX5’s suspension is adjustable and there are various driving modes on offer including normal, comfort (our favourite) and sport. We found the handling to be superb, with controllable weight transfer on the bends. This Lincoln is not short of power either as we managed 0-100kph in around seven seconds. The breaking was very responsive and effective. The car’s creators have included autonomous breaking, which is very reliable in the prevention of, or huge reduction in, the severity of frontal impacts. This is a very quiet ride. The kilometres seem to effortlessly roll by in this metal cocoon of sheer driving pleasure. Being stuck in traffic is far less of an annoyance when spent in this type of luxury. In truth, there is a long list of other special features which set this SUV apart from the rest. To truly appreciate what is on offer here, one needs to book a test drive to experience it in all of its engineering glory. A safe, effortless, comfortable and luxurious ride. ✤ fact magazine

hen I reach the top of the lovely spiral staircase that leads to the lavish CUT By Wolfgang Puck, I’m immediately drawn to the fabulous décor; elegant lighting fixtures hang from the ceiling whilst floorto-ceiling panoramic windows give a whole new perspective to views in Bahrain (phones out, it’s time to put this on our insta story). Today, the FACT team has the pleasure of sampling Executive Chef Brian Becher’s new CUT on the Hour business lunch menu. We’re set and ready to go, a.k.a to eat everything that comes out of the kitchen! I’ve always believed any good restaurant will first wow you with their breads. There were two different homemade starter breads presented and it was the pretzel rolls that quietly satisfied my carb cravings - the butter was perfectly creamy too! Word of warning: don’t go too wild on the breads, SAVE SPACE. Afterall, this is an award-winning steakhouse and what you’ll really want is the meat. The business lunch menu has been designed to give you an out-of-this-world dining experience in the middle of the day, and fast. Served in an hour, you’ll get to devour three courses with a choice of starter, main and dessert. For my starter I opted for freshness to prepare my palate for the main act of the show. Out came the Heirloom Apple and Endive Salad with Shropshire cheese, spiced marcona almonds and pomegranate. Beautifullypresented, you’ll get a generous-sized pretty tower of shaved apple and endive topped with crumbled, chalky Shropshire cheese, sweet dates, slightly-spiced almonds and sharp pomegranate. The vibrant and tasty combination of flavours and textures was a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds and I barely realised how quickly it was gone. A great choice for fruit and veg lovers! Other members of the team tried the U.S.D.A Hand Cut Steak Tartare probably the most wonderfully mighty piece of steak tartare that I’ve ever seen. The feedback saw comments like “this is 80

There's an outstanding Cauliflower Soup on the day of our visit (soups are changed every now and then) and judging by the almost dishwasher-clean bowls, this starter was also a huge hit at our table. Ok, onto the real reason why I’m (and everybody else is) here. My one true friend… steak. To be precise, the U.S.D.A Petite Filet Mignon ‘Au Poivre’ with a black peppercorn-mustard sauce. Let me begin, the perfect piece of medium rare steak arrived at the table and it was love at first bite. Not that I expected any less, but the sensation of seeing that this piece of steak could have been cut with a plastic knife, sent my food brain into overdrive. Every bite was heavenly and I only got more excited for the next mouthful. Tender as butter and slightly-charred on the outside, this steak was seasoned beautifully with a coat of pepper and a pool of sauce around, which added a rich layer of delicious flavour. Judging by the amount of “mmmhs” and the silence that followed, it’s safe to say that I wasn’t alone in my current steak affair. Happy days! fact magazine

You’ll be glad to know that all (yes, there was more than one) of my side dishes were the ideal traditional pairings for steak and definitely large enough to share. Though the Yukon Gold Potato purée, a stunning creamy mash, is something I would strongly consider having all to myself next time. It was THAT GOOD. I teamed it with sautéed spinach and toasted garlic. The spinach was so fresh, I’m sure I started to get more energy with every spoonful - great for counteracting any signs of the food coma that was about to hit us all. This entire main course is a meal that you’ll dream about for days 82

afterwards. I can guarantee that much! Stay with me. There’s more. Trouser button ready to pop, I finished my CUT on the hour journey with a plate of sweet magic; Banana Cream Pie, with Madagascar vanilla crème brûlée, caramel sauce, and a picture-ready scoop of banana sorbet. Just superb. I loved the creativity that went into this dessert. Layers, that’s what this incredible treat was all about. Feather-light pastry layered with a silken pastry cream with an intense banana flavour, which went graciously with the creamy banana sorbet on the side. Oh, and a smear of salted caramel

rendered this meal the most calorific I’ve had this year. Any regrets? ZERO! Considering this is a business lunch, there is absolutely no skimping on portions here. The menu has fantastic seafood options too, and vegetarian diners can also be catered to on request. The pace of the lunch is great with waiters appearing like magic to clear your last dish and make way for the next, effortlessly. They also knew the answer to every single one of my queries so that’s another tick in the service box. The million-dollar question: is CUT on the Hour worth leaving the office for? The answer is the easiest YES I’ve ever given. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that CUT By Wolfgang Puck, for me, is definitely deserving of its Best Restaurant in Bahrain award at the 2016 Citi FACT Awards. In fact, it’s a sharp CUT above the rest (it had to be said!). hen something is crafted out of real love and passion, it shows. This is exactly the vibe you get when you dine at the bright and airy La Med, located in The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. The sunshine seeping into the venue beautifully contrasts the incredible views of the hotel gardens and pool area. Not only do you feel like you’re in 5-star surroundings, this visual bliss transports you far away from the outside world. Word of advice: make sure you’re sitting comfortably, because the food is about to take your breath away. The restaurant provides an exotic blend of Mediterranean and Arabic cuisine, offering an array of choices in its a la carte menu. Handpicked from a range of over 40 to 50 dishes, the new menu is designed to ensure the excitement of your taste buds from appetiser all the way to dessert. Chef De Cuisine Mohamed Abdou introduced us to La Med’s casual dining experience. Hailing from Alexandria, Egypt, Chef Mohamed credits his childhood roots for the fresh and light flavours in his cooking. “Taste is the most important part of the dish for me,” he says. “Second it’s the presentation, but the taste can never be compromised. You have to love everything you cook, but I mostly love cooking with vegetables and seafood, it’s what I do best,” he adds. The sea and its bounties are an important

aspect of Chef Mohamed’s life, since his younger days were spent growing up by the ocean and enjoying all of its wonderful offerings. So, there’s little surprise that our culinary journey begins with the Crab Remoulade Tradition. Made up of, possibly, the freshest crab meat we’ve ever tasted in Bahrain, we’re left mmmhing with every bite of this sensory dish. The tender crab meat which sits on a bed of avocado with cucumber, saffron aioli and a traditional dressing was a fresh explosion of tastes that everyone at the table fell in love with, immediately. Chef Mohamed’s love of seafood made an appearance in the second dish too; Grilled Tuna Babaganoush, made up of a perfectly-grilled tuna steak and chunky-charred eggplant – a spot-on example of blending Mediterranean and Lebanese flavours together as well as tuna done just right. The smokiness of the fish balances out the tanginess of the Babaganoush, beautifully. “Balance is the key,” Chef Mohamed says. “I believe in putting effort into the process of cooking as a whole rather than trying to perfect individual elements. Making sure that the guests are happy is my ultimate mission,” he smiles. Happy is what we were when the next dish was presented; Wagyu Short Ribs with truffle cauliflower, asparagus, baby carrot and black garlic sauce is the product of a long drawn cooking process (five hours to be precise!).

2017 is well and truly underway and I wonder how many of you may have already dropped those New Year’s resolutions? This is why I never make resolutions. I just make goals as I go along through the year. I’ve just come to the one-year anniversary with one of my clients and I’m happy to report she has achieved her number one goal which was to get under 60kg. But even before she reached that we had already discussed the next goals which were to drop another 4kg and enter the Colour Me 5k run which she has completed in 29 minutes – a fantastic first time effort for her debut marathon-style run. Her journey has been amazing as along the way she has seen her body change which has not only had a positive effect on her health and confidence but also with her family. Throughout the year set yourself goals; Short Term, Long Term, Primary and Secondary. As the year goes along and you start achieving your goals reward yourself with things like a spa pamper day, a short weekend break or a slap up meal - the choice is yours. Change will only happen if you get up and make it happen. Stop making other things a priority and make you a priority. This is your journey and the only person you’re doing it for is you; this is about you. Live for you and never lose sight of that again.✤

If there’s one day in the year that you’re allowed, even encouraged to wear your hopelessly romantic heart on your sleeve, it’s February 14, aka Valentine’s Day. And for those of you planning to use this day to show your special someone exactly how much they mean to you, here are a few different ways for you to do it that won’t break the bank. A couples massage - available at a wide range of salons and spas in Bahrain, this is a wonderful way for you to bond with bae without (you) having to lift a finger. Let your massage therapist’s hands do the talking, telling your partner how much they mean to you. A romantic movie - either in the cinema or in the comfort of your own home, it’s entirely up to you. Be sure to choose a flick in which a) nobody dies, including the dog, and b) the guy gets the girl, natch. If you decide to make it an at-home experience, pop a few scented candles around the place to add to the ambience. You can thank me later. A dessert picnic - and finally, you might wish to make the most of Bahrain’s natural beauty, and head out to the dessert. Pack a picnic hamper full of your partner’s fav foods and avoid the areas heavily populated by campers and noise-polluting 4-wheelers. For most people, the term ‘love’ evokes feelings of affection and admiration for their family, partner, favourite hobby or for some lucky ones, their job. What tends to get overlooked often is the love we have for ourselves, or its lack thereof. The term ‘self love’ has manifested itself as the ultimate buzzword of our times and has inevitably lost its true meaning. Self love goes deeper than taking time out for yourself and doing things that give you pleasure. For me and for many like me, the practice of putting my needs above others has often led to feelings of guilt and selfishness. That’s mainly because we don’t truly understand the idea behind self love. It isn’t all about having a quite night in, but all about making unapologetic decisions concerning your life. Self love is going against the popular opinion and holding your own, saying ‘no’ when you know it may upset someone, it’s all about knowing when to choose yourself over others. It doesn’t give you a free pass to be a jerk to others, but to own your life. Unfortunately, just when you think you love yourself enough, a bad breakup or life in general can knock you right off your makeshift pedestal. Understand that self love is a life-long process, a journey. Only you can offer yourself this love. Nothing will ever be good enough if you aren’t in love with yourself. What are your three favourite cultural hotspots in Bahrain and why?

With 15 years of experience in food and beverage management between 5-star hotels and top restaurants in Barcelona, I came to Bahrain looking for new challenges and to experience another culture. I wanted to work in Oliveto because it is one of the most sophisticated, fine dining venues on the island and I identify myself with Italian cuisine as well as the classy and chic atmosphere of the place.

The Nest in Adliya because the concept exposes and supports local artists. The Bahrain National Museum and the Bahrain National Theatre are both beautiful spaces to visit, housing a great variety of cultural events.
