Reboot and Try Again “Past and Present I know well; each is a friend and sometimes an enemy to me. But it is the quiet, beckoning Future, an absolute stranger, with whom I have fallen madly in love.” - Richelle E. Goodrich

D

id you make a New Year’s resolution list? No? Me either. And my reason for not doing so is pretty simple; the only pressure I like is the kind that involves finishing off what’s on my plate and keeping up-to-date with HBO’s new TV series - that’s right, I’m a netflix and binge eat type of girl, so resolutions aren’t always the best way for me to get results. Instead, show me a good documentary on the Travel Channel and believe me when I say that the motivation to get up, do the daily grind and make plans is REAL. In fact, my travel bucket list is as long as a Victoria’s Secret model’s legs and, as far as 2017 goals are concerened, my mission is to tick off as many destinations as possible. Weirdly enough, there are so many places in the Gulf that I’ve yet to visit - something the whole FACT office had in common. And so, we put together a mini GCC Bucket List to inspire your life experiences in 2017. Turn to p25 and see what this beautiful region has to offer. From the skies to the land and the sea, there’s something to entice everyone who’s in search of excitement beyond the brunch and nightlife scene. Bahrain’s fashion, food, entertainment and tech scene is bursting with amazing street style, world-class cuisine and the latest must-have gadgets - we’ve got it all in this issue: Gap’s Fall ‘16 collection (p73); a Culinary Spotlight on Le Bateau (p87); a revisit of the menu at Royal Thai (p93); our popular Venue Review at the dazzling yet casual Cavalli Caffè (p97); the Foodie Corner at one of our favourite Friday Brunches in town, Flavours on 2 (p101); and the very cool Snapchat Spectacles (p70). Starting the year off in true celebratory trend, expect brand new food venues, awesome dining deals and plenty of shopping and cultural activities. If you haven’t been already - take advantage of this gorgeous weather and get outside - walk, run, stargaze, find a sunset spot - just enjoy this winter weather. Until the month of love... time for a Westworld marathon.☺ Shabana Adam Editor-in-Chief shabana@fact-magazine.com 4

New Year, New Dining Deals BUSHIDO RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE IS CONTINUING TO PLEASE THE PALATES OF ALL JAPANESE FOOD LOVERS WITH AMAZING NEW GASTRONOMY OFFERS FOR THE NEW YEAR!

Nabe Menu – available throughout January

There’s nothing better to warm you up this winter than a delicious hot pot dish - and throughout January, Bushido has your taste buds covered! Experience a range of hearty Japanese winter dishes, most widely known as nabemono (nabe is a cooking pot; mono are the things in the pot), with an exciting variety of healthy comfort food in the form of mixed broths and stews. Often referred to as simply nabe, the ingredients are lightly cooked in a broth to ensure that most of the vitamins are retained. In keeping with traditional Japanese cooking methods, the wide selection of nabemono dishes at Bushido will be served in authentic clay pots called donabe. Much like you’ll find in a Japanese home, the nabemono dish is perfect for sharing and is considered an enjoyable and social dining experience with family and friends.

Izakaya Sundays

When the Japanese want to keep their dining casual, they opt for the style of eating called “izakaya”. This informal food gathering sees a constant stream of shared dishes being brought to the table; the aim is to try out as many different menu items as you please, over good conversation! Food is served in small portions, similar to Spanish tapas, and is normally ordered slowly over several courses rather than all at once. Izakaya dining at Bushido includes a wide variety of signature dishes like the fiery-famous Rock Shrimp Tempura, the succulent 10

Sashimi Sea Bass, the citrusy Tuna Wakame, as well as the warm-to-the-touch Volcano Roll and the melt-in-your-mouth Beef Tenderloin with teriyaki sauce. Guests can re-order dishes as many times as they like. Now, what’s better than an invitation to impressive, unlimited Japanese cuisine? Available every Sunday from 7pm to 11.30pm for BD14.5++.

Teppan Tuesday

The word teppanyaki is derived from teppan (iron plate) and yaki (grilled, pan-fried or broiled). What makes this cooking and eating experience so special is not only the fresh, flavourful ingredients, but the performance artistry of the teppanyaki chefs. In the blink of an eye, you’ll witness some of the most sophisticated skills as Bushido’s teppanyaki chefs masterfully chop, dice and season food with their simple tools of the trade: a knife, fork and two metal spatulas. As you watch the magnificent display of dexterity, the chefs will set the grill aflame to cook your meal and divide each diner’s portion from the teppan to the plate. Watching the chefs prepare your food is only half the treat; the rest comes from the leisurely time spent eating your mouthwatering teppanyaki dishes. This oneof-a-kind meal is fun for all, whether couples, groups, or those celebrating a special occasion, like a birthday. Available every Tuesday from 7pm to 11.30pm for BD9.5++. ✤ GO: Call 1758 3555 for reservations and more information.

Seawings has fast become the word in adventure and luxury sightseeing in the UAE, taking tourists up on breathtaking aerial tours of the Emirates, from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas, Ras Al Khaimah and all the stunning landscape in between. Arrange a trip into the clouds on a Cessna Caravan 208 Amphibious aircraft, which operates on both land and water and seats up to nine passengers and one pilot. A trip on one of Seawings’ light passenger aircrafts is far from a luxury jet experience; the roar of the turboprop engines and the white spray of the water as you barrel down Yas Marina’s yacht channel for take-off is an allencompassing sensation. Once airborne, you’ll feel every wind, breeze and air current whilst onboard the seaplane, making for a truly exhilarating experience. However, it’s the spectacular aerial views of the mangroves, coves, islets, landmarks and city skylines that will dominate your memories of the flight. GO: Book the Abu Dhabi ‘Scenic’ or ‘Aerial’ tour with Seawings today. Visit www. seawings.ae or call +971 4 807 0708 for more information.

HAUTE CUISINE ROBERTO’S, ABU DHABI There’s plenty of street food and quirk out there to curb your cravings, but what about when all you want is a mind-blowing, luxury dining experience? Abu Dhabi’s newest highend venue has to be on your list of places to try for 2017! Why? Well, Roberto’s is a classic and polished indoor and outdoor venue offering up Italian gastronomy like nothing you’ve tasted before (trust us, the food is IN-SANE). The absolute top dish to try is the creative Polpo, Cacio E Pepe, E Carciofi, which is slow-cooked, roasted octopus. It’s a tribute to Abu Dhabi, mingling modern techniques with Ancient Roman ingredients: artichoke and cacio e pepe sauce, made of Pecorino cheese, milk and black pepper. Hands down, it’s the best octopus dish we’ve tried in the entire GCC. And for those who shy away from anything that says octopus – THIS is going to be your bucket list best!

STARGAZING IF YOU HAVEN’T GONE CAMPING, DUNE BASHING OR ON THE FAMOUS EVENING SAFARI IN TO THE DESERT, YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON ONE OF THE GULF’S MOST POPULAR AND FAVOURITE PASTIMES. LET US TELL YOU WHY 2017 SHOULD BE A SANDY ONE…

34

fact magazine

For thousands of years, camping was a way of life for the Bedouin of the Gulf, as tribes kept on a constant move across the vast desert, setting up tents and following herds of camel and sheep to greener pastures. Today, there is very little left of that world, and like most long-established traditions, camping has matured with time. Taking a trip into the desert is more of a must-have experience or a result of the need to escape mundane daily tasks and the city bustle, and to seek solace in the vast emptiness. And there are many different ways to go about planning and visiting the desert. Tour companies offer some of the best and safest packages, customdesigned to suit specific time frames and budgets. Desert safaris are most popular; where people are whisked away in a 4x4 for a thrilling ride over massive sand dunes, followed by dinner, dance, and activities in the desert, or an overnight stay. The UAE and Qatari deserts are some of the best in the region, housing a number of camping options.

BUCKET LIST

WHERE TO SET UP CAMP UAE

WHERE TO SET UP CAMP QATAR Located north of Dukhan, the Ras Abrouq peninsula is a favourite spot for weekend campers who come to enjoy the golden sands and pretty limestone scenery. The place is full of wildlife with plenty of animal sightings including hedgehogs, kangaroo mice, and the sand gazelle. An hour’s drive from Mesaieed is Inland Sea (Khor al Adaid), Qatar’s most famous and popular camping destination. The country’s southernmost point, the area is only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles. The scenery there is breathtaking with towering sand dunes soaring from the water’s edge. At the opposite side of Qatar is Umm Tais National Park which has some the most beautiful sandy beaches, and is where Doha’s kite surfers can be found on the weekend. Offshore, a few small islands surrounded by mudflats can be reached by vehicle when the tide is low, where you can find nesting turtles and stunning mangroves. While you’re in Umm Tais don’t forget to check out the pearling city of Al Zubara, which is only a few kilometers away.

The UAE desert is full of wonderful places to pitch your tent and gaze the stars. Don’t expect great facilities in many of these spots but do get ready for space and freedom, and for an experience that will give you a real taste of the country’s outdoors. A two and a half hour journey will get you to the Ras Al Khaimah desert. Here, the true nature of camping comes to life as you can set up near one of the small farms (be sure not too disturb the locals!) surrounded by sand dunes, little oasis farms and camel pens. Take an early morning drive and you might just see some Arabian Oryx, wild birds and pretty banyan trees too. Make sure to take everything, including lots of food and drink, because there are no everyday facilities in the area. The epic slice of Rub Al Khali (the empty quarter) deserves at least a two or three day trip! Liwa is 200km southwest of Abu Dhabi and though it might seem quite a trek, it’d the world’s biggest sand desert, so it’s well worth the drive. These sand mountains are relatively accessible by 4x4 and the whole region is scattered with curved sand dunes and dramatic plunges so if you’re there for a spot of dune bashing (you’d be crazy not to) make sure you’ve got an experienced driver at the wheel. There are plenty of great spots in this desert, dotted with freshwater pools and date plantations; all you have to do is take any road from Liwa oasis or follow the signs for Tal Mireb (Moreeb Hill). If you’re new to this whole desert camping thing then something a little closer to Abu Dhabi like Shwaib near Dubai would be the perfect choice. This is where you’ll find fairly easy access to hidden campsites where stargazing from the top of a dune will wipe away all your worries. It’s close enough to civilisation that you can get your friends to drop off a Starbucks coffee in the morning, but it’s faraway for you to you enjoy and appreciate the stunning scenery of mountains, flat plains and wadis! Shwaib borders Oman so it’s always a good idea to bring your passport! fact magazine

In his quest, Xander finds himself embroiled in a fatal conspiracy.

DIRECTOR: D.J. Caruso CAST: Vin Diesel, Deepika Padukone, Donnie Yen WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Vin Diesel and adrenaline-charged blockbusters seem to go hand in hand. After a 14-year-long hiatus, the actor returns as everyone’s favourite action-man Xander Cage and he doesn’t disappoint. Shot in the picturesque locations of Canada, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines, this film is cinematically pleasing and offers an exhilarating experience. Xander recruits his own cohort of thrill-seeking junkies who add their own charm and character to the plot. The stars of the movie not just wow us with their acting prowess but they’re also incredibly easy on the eyes! Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Augustus Eugene Gibbons along with newbies including Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev and Toni Collete. I, Daniel Blake

“What makes this film worth watching is not just its action-packed scenes but also its impressive cast. The stars of the movie not just wow us with their acting prowess but they’re also incredibly easy on the eyes!”

What’s it about: After losing his job due to his debilitating medical condition, Daniel Blake finds himself in a seemingly inescapable situation. The film walks us through his fight against the authorities along with a single mother stuck in a similar situation.

– xXx: Return of Xander Cage

“The confronting nature of the film may not be for everyone but it’s definitely worth your attention. ”

DIRECTOR: Ken Loach CAST: Dave Johns, Hayley Squires, Dylan Mckiernan, Briana Shann

– I, Daniel Blake

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Every once in a while we need a film that shakes us to our very core and makes us question the way of the world. I, Daniel Blake does just that. The amalgamation of Paul Laverty’s eloquent writing and Ken Loach’s realistic screenplay gives you a lot to think about. This movie won’t leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy but will engulf you with the hard-hitting reality of modern-day struggles. It unearths the raw reality of the British Benefits System and how it feeds off the vulnerable. We follow Daniel and Katie who are brought together by circumstances no one should have to endure. The system that was meant to protect them becomes the source of conflict and pain. The confronting nature of the film may not be for everyone but it’s definitely worth your attention.

Scrappy Little Nobody By Anna Kendrick

HIP-HOP/RAP

Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ By Kid Cudi

After venturing into alternative rock, Kid Cudi does a 360 by returning to rapping in his sixth studio album. The hotly-awaited track list is split into acts akin to his Man on the Moon album series. Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ is a stark departure from his last album and is definitely what we, as his fans, want to see more of. It includes the singles Frequency, Surfin’ and Baptized in Fire. Frequency oscillates between muted croons and staccato raps. The track is a direct product of Cudi’s original style with a more subdued hip-hop ballad sound. Surfin’ featuring Pharrell has a more upbeat electronic brass – a little bit of experimenting that we love. Cudi’s idiosyncratic style featuring the union of hip-hop, rock and dance is what makes his music so distinct. From writing his own songs to directing them, Cudi does it all and he seems to know what he’s doing. His unique vocals and contagious beats are a staple in his latest offering as well. While his previous album had left some fans disappointed, Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin’ could be his saving grace. 48

Night People

We all need a little pick-me-up every now and then to lift our spirits and to make sailing through life a little bit easier. Who better to provide us with much-needed words of wisdom than the super witty Anna Kendrick? The funny-woman has compiled all her life’s memorable moments in her autobiographical collection of essays while being as entertaining and quirky as ever. The essays feature moments from her New England upbringing to being one of Hollywood’s most loved actresses. Scrappy Little Nobody is the perfect companion to snuggle up with this winter.

By You Me At Six

Rock lovers rejoice! You Me At Six are coming out with their fifth studio album, Night People and it surpasses everything they have done before. There’s a clear shift from their former sound towards a more rock-influenced style. While keeping their signature edgy, pop-punk persona intact, they dabble in a more guitardriven and drum-heavy technique. The English rockers seem to have come a long way since their last release, Cavalier Youth, which was considerably tamer. Through Night People they try to move away from their preferred pop-rock vibe to a more rock heavy production. Josh Franceschi’s seductive vocals entwined with the captivating beats are enough to push you into a rock induced trance. While not everyone might be up for the change You Me At Six are introducing, it’s surely a change for the better and could very well reintroduce them into the rock realm. If their lead single is any indication of how the album is going to be, then it’s definitely one to watch out for!

Over the past 200 years, the nature of the British-Bahraini relationship has evolved and the ties between the two nations were strengthened. Above all, this relationship was shaped by varied explorations, encounters and personal stories. This exhibition draws on the first explorations of Bahrain and its archaeological landscape. It celebrates a few of those who have played a major role in bringing global attention to Bahrain by shifting the focus from artefacts to people and their documented encounters with local Bahrainis. The exhibition, which is organised in collaboration between the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and the British Council in Bahrain, attempts to shed light on different perspectives of the bicentenarylong British-Bahraini relationship. Mr. Alan Rutt, British Council Country Director, said: “The British Council is keen to always promote the friendly relationship between Bahrain and the UK and has launched many initiatives this year surrounding this theme; as we celebrate 200 years of Bahrain-UK relations. “The photography exhibition that the British Council, in partnership with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, is organising is a wonderful way to conclude this year’s celebration,” he added. Art enthusiasts, this one’s for you! ✤

MALJA - A RED BULL SPACE BY NOOR NOORUDDIN

I

t was just a warehouse, a big white space. Every week, the construction and design team met with us, a group of creative minds, to go over the birth of Malja. I remember the overpowering smell of paint and having to slowly walk over the rubble to say hi to the mixture of talent in the building, from music producers, visual artists, and comedians, to art curators, DJs, and photographers. It was the same construction and conversation every week, but it was robust with an undertone of apprehension, a sense of disbelief that this place was actually going to exist: Malja Bahrain. When opening day finally came, there was no coming out of its surreal energy. The team had invited all kinds of artists from 56

all over the region to check out the space before the ceremony that night, and it was an overwhelming realisation of how much energy the region has been harboring for so long. There were graffiti artists working together outside to create Malja’s firstever graffiti piece, while Saudi rappers make conversation with an Omani painter in the gallery space. The curators were finalising Malja’s maiden exhibition, while interviews were being conducted at the QTF Sound Space for the first time ever. The possibilities were endless, and we were all bursting at the seams with emotion. Now, almost two years in, everything is different and yet still the same. The space’s vision has taken shape, and we know now the real potential here. We have our regulars: a new art exhibition every

few weeks, major annual events like the BC One Bahrain Cypher, and the newly added Open Mic nights. These are the events we’ve developed a groove for, and look forward to throughout the year to celebrate the showcase of art, music, dance, and raw talent. Underneath the major showcases, we focus on development, so we leave a lot of wiggle room for the strange and the creative, like workshops that haven’t been offered in the kingdom before, including music production, fashion, visual art portfolios, jewellery-making and songwriting. In the quiet moments in between showcases and the hands-on development, artists just need to connect and share their stories. This is where all the intimate info sessions come in, where we get to learn

ARTS & CULTURE

by listening to the stories of icons like Run D.M.C.’s Darryl McDaniels, and regional artistic revolutionaries like Big Hass, Outlaw Productions, Essa Al Essa, and House of Nomad. I can’t even begin to describe everything that Malja has gone through, all the magic that has passed through with every artist, every musician, and every idea in the space. With another year coming to a close, Malja once again feels like a blank space, an open canvas ready to take on whatever’s coming. With our anniversary just around the corner and a new artistic experiment called CoLab coming to life, it feels like 2017 is going to be a big year, and I personally cannot wait to find out what’s next. ✤ GO: Visit http://malja.redbull.com/ for more information. fact magazine

Large stained-glass windows adorn the inside – making it a worth while visit if you’re a fan of old-school architecture. Because this is the queu that leads to a small two-window, hole-in-the-wall that serves up Milan’s most favourite food – the legendary panzerotti - a fried pastry triangle stuffed with tomato and trickling mozzarella – it’s the stuff of dreams. It’s originally from Puglia but has become one of Milan’s most recognisable treats.

Hop off and visit the bohemian canals’ shores, lined with cool cafes and vintage shops. he phrase “this place has real history” couldn’t be more fitting for the beautiful ME Milan Il Duca. The hotel is situated in the former building of Hotel Duca di Milan, which was redesigned and extended between 1988 and 1991 by the late, globally-renowned architect Aldo Rossi. The new facade unveiled a striking red brick and stone Lombard exterior, with four large Carrara marble columns and linear windows framing the entrance in a simple and cultured design. Today, the building stands as a masterpiece of modern Italian architecture. Location wise, ME Milan Il Duca is in the centre of Milan, in one of the largest Italian squares named Piazza della Repubblica, which was built in 1865 to house Milano’s central railway station. Just minutes from the fashion district and the new vibrant Porta Garibaldi area, which boasts the hottest nightclubs, innovative concept stores and design showrooms, ME Milan Il Duca is a sought-after spot for visitors. The hotel is also close to Porta Venezia, the oldest Milanese park dating back to 1780, 60

I

t seems there are models of SUV styled vehicles making their way onto our roads from so many car manufacturers these days, which is not surprising when considering how in demand the SUV currently is. That is why trying something new in the mid-range SUV segment was a pleasure for us at fact. Introducing the MG GS. Brought back to life by the Chinese a few years ago, we agree, the revived MG brand has produced its best offering thus far in this stylish model. Firstly, the MG GS’s closet rival is the award winning Nissan Qashqai, which it easily beats in price. It also costs a lot less than the Mazda CX5. The vehicle’s outer appearance has combined sporty elegance with sharp, smooth body lines. With the MG’s iconic octagon at the front and its overall trendy shape, it targets young, fashion conscious people who are looking for a new way to express themselves on the roads.

ISLAND RIDES

When examining the specs, we were pretty impressed. Explore has 17” wheels, USB input, aircon, cruise control, electric mirrors and automatic lighting. When moving up to the Excite model, Bluetooth, a leather covered steering wheel, DAB Radio, rear parking sensors and a parking camera are added. Then there is the top of the range Explore, which boasts full leather upholstery, 18” wheels, sidesteps, electric and front seats and roof bars. Needless to say, all three models make for a comfortable and driver friendly experience. Additional features include an intelligent Start-Stop feature which cuts fuel consumption, a FSF high-tensile integrated lightweight body structure and reverse camera with dynamic guideline, which all work together to offer the public a vehicle that provides a safe, exciting and exhilarating ride. The interior has been neatly styled and conventionally laid out for your

convenience. A range of centrally mounted screens and a center console housing numerous control buttons have been logically positioned for easy viewing and access. The driver’s seat is six-way adjustable, with the passenger seat being four-way, ensuring comfortability for all. The interior storage available can be described as adequate. The boot has a 355L capacity which can be greatly increased when the back seats are laid completely flat, a feature not common in the midrange SUV sector. There is leg and head room aplenty for both the driver and front passenger, whilst the three people in the back have sufficient space in both areas. Rear passengers are able to slide their seats back and forth, as well as recline the seat backs. But what is under the shapely hood? Unlike other SUVs in its class segment, the MG GS is powered by a 2.0L turbo engine and delivers an impressive 220hp. It completes 0-100km/hr in 8 seconds, which rivals many luxury models. With an All-wheel Drive and a four differential locks system (optional), combined with a platform dedicated specifically for SUV vehicles, this complete package represents a major asset to the end customers. The driver has the ability to completely surpass a 2.5L engine performance and approach that of 3.0L. A high-precision electric power steering system ensures you are always in control of all this muscle. We found the MG GS to be a smooth drive. With great traction on the roads, it corners well and one always feels in charge of the journey. We found it compact enough to easily move around a busy town and the positioning of the driver’s seat gave us a commanding view of the roads. This combined with great visibility made us feel very relaxed. It is not always easy to find something new in an already saturated market. The MG GS has not only managed to offer everything one would look for in a mid-range SUV, but has given people the chance to express their stylish and individual character on the roads. ✤ GO: Get in touch with Zayani Motors today. hen we first meet Kevin McIntyre, the General Manager at Le Bateau, we’re greeted by a firm handshake, an enthusiastic smile and someone who has a clear passion for motivating his team to produce the best sweet and savoury treats in Bahrain. Kevin has been with the famous bakery, café and restaurant brand for almost three years now, building on the strength and quality of Le Bateau; a sister company of Qatar’s Bateel, under Al Mana Gourmet & Food C.O. As a result, Le Bateau has become one of Bahrain’s most-recognised names for a wide variety of Breads, Viennosseries, Savories, Cakes and Pastries. From celebration cakes to personalised delights, cotton-candysoft breads and baguettes, hand crafted chocolates and special creations for seasonal holidays, Le Bateau is taking dessert and pastry production to a whole new level. Le Bateau’s home of operation in Tubli is made up of a number of floors with clean, airy space for baking, mixing, rolling, decorating and all the fun behind-thescenes action and hard work that goes into its much-loved foodie inventions. After walking around and coming face-to-face with the man power and the machines that help to produce large amounts of daily orders, we’re notably impressed. This place thrives off inspiration and imagination, and these are two things that clearly trickle down from the management, which in this case is General Manger, Kevin. “If I get a brainwave, I go for it,” he says. “When it comes to new ideas, I’ll go down and talk to the staff. I’ll tell them what we’ve got coming up and ask them ‘what can we do?’ And then the guys start inventing and playing around and we get to some new products. “It also depends on the staff,” Kevin adds. “If they motivate you and you motivate them, then crazy ideas can work. I always say ‘show me what you want to do’ – you 88

have to trust and let them do what they want.” And that is one of his main philosophies to keep Le Bateau ahead in the food game, to “not have too many rules.” We’re intrigued to learn more. “In the art of pastry and bakery, you shouldn’t have many rules,” Kevin tells us. “You have your recipe standards and you have your flavouring standards, but rules in the world of desserts don’t work, why? Because, sometimes, the best desserts in the world are made by mistake.” Some of Le Bateau’s most-selling favourites include the stunningly flavourful Mango Cake and the freshlypacked, humble chapatti. The latter is sold in supermarkets and selected cold stores all around Bahrain, and the team at Le Bateau produces around 12,000 chapattis a day, with the dough being mixed in a separate area and the chapattis being cooked by a cool machine – it’s equal man and machine power – and it runs like clockwork. Kevin is a general manager who doesn’t really like being sat in the office – it’s just not his style and approach to growing the Le Bateau business. He explains: “I like to go and see where our products are. I go and check my outlets, I go and meet customers, I do sales and meeting calls, I go down to the kitchens, see what’s being done and give my ideas of what I’d like. When I give crazy ideas – I get the staff to start practicing and come up with new products.” One such creation, which came as a result of Kevin’s out-of-the-box thinking, is the picture-perfect Rainbow Bagel that people just can’t seem to get enough of. It’s made for specialty restaurants and also sold at Le Bateau’s three Bahrain outlets in Bukuwarah, Enma Mall in Riffa, and Tubli. “At the end of the day, you’ll never know how something works unless you try it,” Kevin says. “One thing I must admit about the Bahraini market is that the more new things you put out there, the more they’re willing to try.”

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

Le Bateau currently works with 18 four and five-star hotels as well as supermarkets, restaurants and cafés, alongside exporting to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, to meet customer demands. This is something that Kevin hopes to expand on over the next year. “My 2017 goals are to have progression and new ideas,” he says. “I would love to bring Le Bateau to other GCC countries; I’d like to go to Dubai in the UAE, because the one thing that the GCC forgets is that there’s so many good production units here, you don’t need to order what you need from America and Europe,” Kevin continues. “Come to us and get it – we’re here in Bahrain, in the centre of it all – what do you want? I’m the little guy that can produce big – and that’s what I’m looking at for 2017.” Much like his friendly and talented team, Kevin’s job satisfaction comes from happy customers. If the beautiful Christmas hampers, tasty variety of breads and pastries, and fine selection of mouthwatering chocolate (including mocha, hazelnut, caramel, coconut and more), that we saw – and tasted – is anything to go by, Kevin and the Le Bateau team are headed in the right direction; onwards and upwards! ✤ GO: Visit www.lebateau.me for more information.

ON THE MENU

W

hen you walk into Royal Thai restaurant, expect to be transported to the grand pagodas of Thailand. A beautiful large venue takes prime position amidst The Gulf Hotel’s tropical gardens and provides scenic views overlooking the turquoise waters of the outdoor swimming pool. Inside, generous-sized tables are spread out with warm, wooden interiors giving a nod to true Asian décor elements. There are house plants bringing the tropics indoors, Thai-inspired ornaments and wall coverings, a mesmerising fish tank and two stunning private dining rooms in addition to the main seating area. But its enchanting set up is no mask for what we’re really there for; the food. The menu is home to all the favourites, chicken satay skewers and a tangy peanut sauce, fish cakes, spring rolls and other such delights on the starters, followed by the mighty Tom Yum Goong, crispy duck, wok-fried prawns and authentically Thai desserts like sweetened sticky rice – so why fix something if it’s not broken? The difference here is, Thai master chef, Tawatchai Chuto adds his own modern-day influence through certain ingredients and vibrant presentation. The dishes start to come out and the first thing that strikes us is our waiter’s knowledge of each one. From the ingredients to the way it’s cooked and why it gives off a particular taste, he knows the answers to our questions like a dictionary. It’s even more impressive because he’s Nepalese – but very passionately proclaims his love for Thai food and, especially, the food at Royal Thai. Big thumbs up for service and guest engagement! After browsing the various sections (and admittedly being very grateful for the translations) we begin with the Spicy Rice Balls and the Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce. The latter is definitely the standout – the key is to dunk the chicken and cover it with this silky peanut sauce and savour every bite. Deviating from heavier choices, we opt for the Pomelo Chicken Prawn Salad, followed by the legendary spicy Tom Yum Goong and the unusually brilliant Tom Kha Gai – a sour coconut soup with chicken, 94

ON THE MENU

lemongrass and galanga. The salad blows us away; it’s almost like a fresh version of a leftover Thai red curry, whilst the Tom Yum, as predicted, fails to disappoint. But it’s the distinctive galangal – an immensely pungent and fiery rhizome, related to the common ginger – that really speaks to our taste buds. Talk about winter warmer soup and this is our new favourite! For mains, the Wok-fried Prawns with Black Pepper Sauce and the completely one-of-akind Steamed Snow Fish in fresh Chilli and Lime Sauce are both beyond palate pleasing. The jumbo-sized prawns are jubilantly juicy, whilst the snow fish is unlike anything

we’ve ever tasted, tender white fish engulfed in a fine stock that is bursting with flavours. Chef Tawatchai tells us that his trick is to use lime instead of lemon, as the zesty, tangy tastes from the lime sticks to food more easily than its sour yellow friend. If you live for desserts, you’re going to get exquisite experimental choices at Royal Thai. The Yellow Mango Cheescake and the Homemade Rich Coconut Ice Cream are both devoured in mere minutes at our table. The cheesecake is light, almost creamy and complemented well by the light crunch of the delicate base, whilst the coconut ice cream sits in between that blissful area of half icy and half way to sorbet – it’s divine. In all avenues of the Royal Thai menu, seafood and fish lovers have nothing but unlimited choice; there’s crab, lobster, hammour, prawns and so much more that can be fried, steamed, curried and spiced to perfection. Bringing that much-loved taste of Thailand to Bahrain with a welcomed contemporary touch is exactly what Chef Tawatchai and his team will deliver! ✤ GO: Visit Royal Thai at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. VENUE REVIEW

F

or a start, you can’t miss this venue. The signature Zebra print, so symbolic of Roberto Cavalli bathes the stylish and comfy seating. The décor is opulence personified and makes you feel like you’re somewhere special. The walls pay tribute to the designer’s celebrity track record, where there are framed photos of him with a string of red carpet greats, posing in glamourous and tongue-in-cheek ways. But this is not a place for snooty posers, you genuinely get amazing food here. You can tell just by the menus. You don’t get just one, nope. You get (at the moment) a FW16 menu – this we loved – because it refers to the fashion season we’re currently in (Fall/Winter 2016), clever and appropriate, right? On this menu you have a solid selection of main meal options. You then also have the regular menu which has all your usual appetisers and mains – again, an impressive variety. We started off with a silky Burrata San Marzano which was served over the Chef ’s black tomato coulis and was lovingly doused in balsamic vinegar, making the dish authentically Italian. We paired this with the Salmon Tartare – the lavish 98

VENUE REVIEW

presentation alone was appetising enough. This saw swimmingly fresh salmon sit alongside wild fennel, beetroot, fresh dill with tahini dressing mixed together over an ice dome to keep it as cool and fresh as possible. Top marks for innovation and style. And when it comes to the most boxticking Italian food, you can’t possibly skip a juicy, crowd-pleasing pizza. Keeping it traditional and a firm-favourite, we opted for the Truffolosa pizza; made up of four lipsmacking cheese, baby mozzarella, truffle and garnished with leafy baby spinach. This warmed us with the feel-good factor and confirmed that even the simplest of pizzas can win us over in a big way. From the Cavalli Seasonal Menu (FW16) we got an elegant Pan Seared Salmon served over lime risotto with garlic sauce. The sea of risotto was creamy-soft and terrifically satisfying, it perfectly added filling weight to the lean salmon. For our highly anticipated dolce, being the chocolate fiends that we are, we got two desserts of equally rich ingredients. The Nerona, Nocciolina choco mousse wrapped in dark coverture, spicy banana wafers and poached pear. If death by chocolate means anything to you, dear readers, you’ll definitely have your fix of it with this divine dessert. It’s moussy where you want it to be and spongy elsewhere – the latter less so, but we’re not complaining! All the goodness lies in the liberal quantities of mousse. Then we went for something closer to our Gulf shores, La Palma. This is a Sukary date pudding served with two scoops of saccharine vanilla bean ice cream with heavenly toffee sauce. The dipping and diving offerings of this dessert are plenty and SO, SO ADDICTIVE – the pudding is moist as anything and made our tummies very happy. Overall, as our first entry into the Cavalli Caffé goes, it’s not an intimidating venue and the food is as down-to-earth as you want it and as luxurious, too. To top that off, the menu prices are as similar to what you might pay at one of the neigbouring cafés in the Seef area – except, here you’re getting the same high-quality, creative food with a designer touch. How’s that for the perfect balance of pocket-friendly, elegant eating? ✤

et us break it down for you; there’s a 5-star hotel with a beautiful, light-filled venue inside, the atmosphere is buzzing with the sounds of a talented trumpet player who is full of surprises and just as entertaining when she plays a festive holiday song and then a Calvis Harris hit. In fact, her musical repertoire is as eclectic and diverse as the unbelievable food options at this stunning brunch; it’s a cheerful affair at Flavours on 2 when we visit on a festive Friday afternoon. There’s a great mixed crowd with company employees celebrating their end of year party, families with children who are sat comfortably with their iPads in-hand, couples enjoying an intimate yet lively afternoon together, and groups of friends conversing over good food. Aah, food; the very thing that made us answer yes to this epicurean calling. Firstly, let us start by saying, this brunch is in no way a stadium-sized shindig – and it’s not trying to be. It’s a cosy yet limitless dining display of just how good a brunch can be when real creativity and attention to detail has gone into its concept. Even with the venue full, we never felt like we had to tackle through people to get to any of the buffet or live cooking stations. In fact, it was quite the opposite; everyone just seemed so happy to be there and ecstatic that their plates were filled with high102 fact magazine

quality ingredients and super tasty cuisines. This made for a very warm and friendly atmosphere where you could relax and have fun at the same time. You’ll notice an abundance of colours – there’s vibrant sushi, a variety-filled salad bar, a sprawling seafood ice display, an interactive stir-fry, tempura and grills station as well as a fabulous buffet of Indian delights, Arabic appetisers, a massive cheese selection and, of course, heavenly desserts. tender veal cheek. We loved it because, for one, it’s not a common choice of meat at a brunch and, two, it was cooked exquisitely – we went back for seconds! Other must-haves at this divine brunch include: the creamy burrata salad, deliciously-filling quiche, golden prawn tempura, succulent lamb chops and the mouthwatering chicken biryani. The maki rolls and fresh tuna and salmon sashimi also had us doing a happy dance. There is, literally, something for every single palate. You know the food is good when people around you at brunch are more interested in what’s on their plates than what’s in their glass. At this brunch, diners were enjoying the different cuisines just as much as the vino, cocktail and mocktail selections – a flawless pairing! For dessert, make sure you try the red velvet cake and the hot pudding, which is occasionally changed up but is frequently the sinful sticky date pudding

– H.E.L.L.O! The choco fountain and extensive ice cream bar is a major hit too! Downtown Rotana’s flawless brunch is ideal for the entire family, as kids aren’t forgotten; there’s a huge room especially dedicated to little ones, filled with toys and games to keep them entertained. Afterwards, brunch guests have complimentary pool access until 7pm – so why not make a day of it? e’re not short of luxurious spas in Bahrain, but what we do lack is facilities outside of a 5-star hotel that provides the same high-quality treatments, in a professional environment with a range of exciting services. That is until now; enter Hydro Spa & Salon. This beautiful space is home to a tranquil spa, a stylish salon catering for both grown-ups and younger clients, 104 fact magazine

an extensive studio for exercise classes, a generous pool and a lovely Moroccan Bath. It’s basically the kind of place to go for a spa day with your mum, sister or best friend, but also where your fitness needs can be fulfilled too. I’m visiting to try out two of the spa’s most unique treatments; the Signature Sea Salt Hammam (45 minutes) and the Signature Hydro Massage (75 minutes). On arrival, I’m greeted by warm smiles and friendly

faces, and it’s not just the staff that give a good first impression. Inside, there’s a fully fledged, stunning spa with high ceilings, a tranquil reception area and walls lined with top-of-the-range spa products like Elemis, Dr. Dennis Gross, OPI, Essie and others. I’m notably impressed. After filling out all the regular pretreatment forms, I’m ushered into a lovely changing area – in fact, it’s just as good, if not better, than some 5-star hotel spas that I’ve experienced – it’s a large space with plenty of lockers, restrooms, separate showers and private changing areas. Once I’ve slipped into the comfy robe and slippers, I head straight to the Moroccan Bath. Firstly, I love the fact that the therapist is a Moroccan lady; she gives a brief explanation of the treatment and how the products used will eliminate all the dead skin cells on your body whilst ridding your skin of toxins, allowing your pores to fully open and breathe. Sounds just like what I needed! The treatment is a process; you lie on a giant,

rock-solid slab, on top of a towel, resting your head on a comfy makeshift pillow. It starts off with the scrubbing of the skin using a traditional Moroccan Exfoliating Kessa Glove which is quintessential to the Moroccan Hammam spa ritual. The benefits are abundant – the scrub down helps to reduce in-grown hair (hallelujah for the ladies who know what that struggle is all about), it exfoliates and cleanses the entire body leaving skin smooth and silky, its texture sloughs dead cells from the surface of the skin and it helps in eliminating uneven skin texture, discoloration, dullness, and acne. This is followed by a coating of olive soap and deep relaxation time with steam, then comes the sea salt body mask application and more time to relax in the steam, finishing off with a warm shower. You’re left with gorgeously-smoother, brighter and healthier skin all the way from the roots of your hair down to the tips of your toes. Things only get better as I dry off and make my way to the massage room. The therapist lets me choose an essential oil – I go for the lavender as she explains that it helps to reduce anxiety and stress and improves sleep – perfect for a deeply relaxing massage. The techniques used to work out the tight knots in the back is something I loved every second of. With firm yet gentle-to-the-touch pressure, my aching muscles are given a new lease of life after this wonderful full body massage – heaven! Hydro Salon & Spa also provides aerobics, zumba, swimming and aqua zumba classes alongside innovative and stylish hair treatments, waxing, mani-pedi services and state-of-the-art facials. A pretty pink Teen Salon is the ideal place for young ladies to take a seat and get pampered whilst mum and her friends are getting their hair and other beauty treats done. It’s the ideal location for ladies in the Riffa area who don’t want to go all the way to Manama and beyond for a spa day, but it’s also the perfect place for those who want to get out of the city bustle for some muchneeded me-time. CHRISTAL DENNIS, PERSONAL PERFORMANCE COACH AND HYPNOTHERAPIST, IS DEDICATED TO HELPING PEOPLE OVERCOME LIFE’S HURDLES AND TAPPING INTO THEIR DEEPEST POTENTIAL...

FOR SOME REASON, MOST PEOPLE that I’ve come across, and know, were so glad to see the back of 2016. So how can you make 2017 your year? Well, don’t sit there and wait for it, go out and make a change. When you start a journey of change you need positive people around you, so cutting off or unfollowing negative people from your life is sometimes necessary as they will only hold you back; don’t feel guilty about it. Try new things whether it be rock climbing, salsa dancing, HITT training or yoga - do something that’s going to challenge you. Make sure your nutrition is on point otherwise as the old saying goes “if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail”. Have all that good stuff in the house. There are farmers markets every weekend, so get up early and get those fresh fruit and vegetables. Each person’s version of a healthy and happy life is different which is why you should never envy anyone as you don’t know where they have come from and where they’re going. Being happy and healthy includes using your mind, heart and spirit. As I said before, for many people 2016 was not a good year but you have the power within you to make sure 2017 is fabulous and fierce. So, go to bed early, wake up early and be ready for any challenge that comes your way. Happy New Year. ✤

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Travelling to a faraway place, learning a foreign language, tandem skydiving into a field of flowers? Mine’s similarly diverse, but tends to sound as much as a shopping list as it does a bucket list. I’m not sure what this says about me but I’ll choose not to put it out there for psycho-analysis. A bucket list is a totally personal construct after all. One of the items fairly far up my shopping/bucket list is a car that’s large enough to wreak havoc on those cheeky drivers who cut me off, tailgate, hog the road etc. I’d like it to look something like a Range Rover Evoke (2door of course), white exterior, beige interior. But it would also have some cool custom features designed especially to take the aforementioned drivers by surprise. Rotating knives that pop out of the hubcaps and flames that shoot out of the exhaust, just to name a few. Something else that appeals to me (and this is pure bucket list stuff ), is living in Venice. I’d have my two little dogs with me as well, so they could join me on my daily jaunts around the cobbled streets. My days would be spent sipping coffee in tiny cafes, zipping around in a small motor boat, and just trying to soak in as much of this amazing little corner of the world as possible. Wishing you a wonderful month and much love. ✤

New Year, New Me?

#VINEET #BHATIA #BO OK #LAUNCH

AANCHAL DUGGAL, IS AN AVID BIBLIOPHILE AND FASHION ENTHUSIAST TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING OUT OF DOING WHAT SHE LOVES.

“NEW YEAR, NEW ME”- as cliché as it may sound, is something we all want for ourselves as we step into the New Year. Each year, a fresh list of resolutions is conjured up, borne out of our dire need of improvement. But its implementation is a whole different story. The failure to bring about the desired changes into your lifestyle is not a reflection of your unwillingness to commit. In fact, the notion that a change of calendar can force you to become a better person is flawed altogether. The stroke of midnight does not, in anyway, guarantee a whole ‘new you’. So, as I ring in the New Year, I won’t be scraping up any resolutions. I refuse to leave the change to tomorrow when I can easily start with it today. This New Year, instead of striving for specific goals, I’m going to aim for little changes every day. In lieu of trying to make it to the gym, a decent amount of times a week, I’m going to take the stairs instead and walk the distance wherever possible. For once, I’m going to ignore the carb-fanatic in me and ditch a side of fries for a salad (while keeping the burger, of course). I promise to not bite off more than I can chew (pun intented). Most of all, I promise to be kinder and more grateful, to myself and to everyone around me and I promise to start today! ✤ GO: Email aanchalduggal1@gmail.com for more information.

General Manager, Downtown Rotana – Bahrain

Island Insider WHAT MAKES THE HOSPITALITY AT DOWNTOWN ROTANA STAND OUT?

YOUR THREE FAVOURITE CULTURAL HOTSPOTS IN BAHRAIN AND WHY?

Without question, it is the genuine hospitality of each Downtown Rotana employee. We have one of the highest ratios of Bahraini colleagues and this has a great impact on the warmth and welcome experienced by our guests throughout their stay. Also, the quality of our service, facilities and the value for money for our hotel rooms and restaurants differentiates us, and has received very positive feedback and reviews on various digital platforms including social media. Downtown Rotana offers the comforts of one’s own home in the heart of the Kingdom.

Bahrain has plenty of historic, cultural and social hotspots to entertain both its residents and visitors. Bab Al Bahrain is definitely one of my favourites being only steps away from the hotel, it is the main entry point into Manama Souq and offers a traditional shopping experience. The Bahrain National Museum and Fort are also venues I like to visit with my family. Bahrain is unique in the variety of its cuisines and I like breakfast at Crust Crema and lunch at Lumee in Saar which is highly recommended for its Middle Eastern flavours.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GOALS WITH THE HOTEL FOR 2017? Our main focus for 2017 is to establish Downtown Rotana as the leading 5 star city hotel in Bahrain and continue to raise the bar in hospitality by investing in improving our services and facilities to surpass customer expectations. We also want to boost traffic to our food and beverage outlets, especially our signature restaurant Teatro Downtown, which is fast becoming a dining hotspot in this part of town. Finally, we will focus on attracting more MICE opportunities and making Downtown Rotana the first choice for events, meetings, and conferences.
