2020: Get Tight and Get Right...

Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over.” - Guy Finley

A

whole new decade… who’s ready for 2020? Not only are we in a leap year – there’s something rather fun about that extra day in February, right? – but this is also the year of so many incredible happenings here in Bahrain. But before we delve into the seasonal excitement, let’s talk about memes. In the lead up to NYE, our Instagram feeds here at FACT were filled with all kinds of inspirational, motivational and down-right laughable memes, all expressing new life mottos and renewed positive thinking to catapult us all into a better New Year. Personally, I don’t mind these small bites of mantra: “Your Life is Beautiful, Even When it’s Not Perfect” – or how about “Where’s my Oscar For Acting Like Everything is Fine” – and my very favourite that shows Jerry the cartoon mouse relaxing with his feet up and the very straight-to-the-point words “Bad Vibes, Get Off Me” sprawled across the picture. Surely, you’ve double tapped and saved some of these for a future rainy day when you might need a little reminder or boost to breathe and take a moment for yourself. So, in true meme style, we’re setting ourselves up for the best year yet. After plenty of conversations in the office and with friends, we’ve come to realise that a lot of us still haven’t experienced so many of the cool events, cultural sites, hidden nooks, and insta-worthy activities in Bahrain. I’ve never been winter camping or on the pearling path – two things that are on our list of 20 for 2020 starting on p25. Call it a mini Bahrain bucket list, or call it 20 new ideas for a more entertaining year ahead. Let us know if we missed any of your favourite things to see and do! The food scene in Bahrain is a continuous whirlwind of innovative concepts and yummy cuisines – our January issue is dedicated to just some of these places. From brunches to special menus and everything in between, you’ll find all the culinary inspo you need to make sure that 2020 starts off on an epicurean high. The next 12 months are going to be filled with ALL the fun - awards season, competition campaigns, fabulous events and some of Bahrain's best happenings to date. We're ready for it! And if you find yourself slipping off into unproductive mode, just open up instagram and find that one meme that speaks to you - even if it is a cartoon mouse with his feet up! Happy New Year all. ☺

t Fusions by Tala, the culinary team go beyond blending flavors of Middle Eastern cuisine and fine dining. The menu is about story-telling and weaving with the delicate strands of culture and memory.

They start at the market, the very inspiration of the restaurant’s dishes. They speak with local farmers to adapt their dishes based on seasonality. Their signature dishes are your portal into the past and the future of Bahrain. With delicious concoctions like Golden Goose, a Middle Eastern twist on chicken liver pate, and the as well as the Leek Ravioli which promotes root-to-stem cooking. Event: Beyond Silence By Rashid Diab – A Retrospective Date: Current – February 15 Time: 10am to 8pm (closed on Tuesdays) Venue: Bahrain National Museum Genre: Exhibition Sudanese artist, Dr. Rashid Diab, carries the obsession of an artist and the questions of a curious mind, both of which are only satisfied by color, form and shadow. His secrets and his identity rely in colors, and he is very realistic as far as he is abstract and emotional and flowing like the river Nile, which is his main inspiration. In this retrospective, we discover his artistic identity, which has been founded on the principle of converting and transforming one of the cultural or social elements into a subject matter, and then turn this subject into a vision through imagination and beauty. Event: The 46th Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition Date: January 15 to February 15 Time: 10am to 8pm (closed on Tuesdays) Venue: Bahrain National Museum & Bahrain National Theatre Genre: Exhibition The 46th Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, the first, biggest and longest-running platform for Bahraini artists to showcase and exhibit the outcome of their creative minds. Since its inception in 1972, the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition has now evolved into an important yearly gathering of artists, all eager to display their talents and works. Every year, the fine arts exhibition acts as an innovative forum for debate in which the different artistic monologues have an exclusive opportunity to communicate, converse and compete. From abstract to surrealism, from modernist representations to more traditional cultural expressions, this exhibition represents an opportunity to highlight different schools of thought, artists’ perceptions and ideological backgrounds. Held annually under the patronage of HRH the Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition has hosted more than 2,600 artists over the years, showing more than 5,500 works of art. Those who were once young and enthusiastic art students hoping to take part in the 22

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey beneath the waves to meet the amazing creatures that inhabited the oceans 200 million years ago at a time when dinosaurs ruled the land. This exhibition has been generously supported by the British Council, DCMS and GREAT through the UK-Gulf Culture and Sport programme to support and encourage new partnerships and collaborative projects between institutions in the United Kingdom and the Gulf. Event: Food is Culture 5 Date: January 26 to January 30 Time: 7pm to 9pm Venue: Bahrain National Museum Food is Culture is a creative experimental project that aims to bridge together the mediums of art and food. Running in parallel with the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, this experiment sheds light on creative processes that take place when two individuals (from different creative disciplines) collaborate. Every year five artists and five chefs get together and work to produce a creative product; be it a painting, installation, video, cake, drink, all or something completely different. The result of their two months’ work, which is documented in a short film and a publication, will be presented during the course of the week, where they share and display their collective creations.✤

muscle in your body at some point in time. Cruising in an inner bay or blasting through waves, the unstable nature of water and the occasional challenge of gusting wind adds to the difficulty of balancing on a SUP board. This offers a complete body workout that activates the core. You work on conditioning your back, arms, legs and even your toes and feet while paddling. A good half hour on a paddle board will work out your quads and calves for sure. SUP is an excellent cardiovascular activity and a relaxing sport! If yoga is your way of exercising and keeping fit, do it with a little twist. Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga teaches you how to move on calm water using different paddling techniques and the importance of balance. A beautiful workout system that strengthens and lengthens all the major muscle groups, opening up the breath, calming the mind and moving into greater alignment with yourself and the natural beauty that surrounds you on the water. For beginners, there are a whole host of classes available with all the required safety measures you’ll need. The pros amongst us can enjoy riding sessions at quite a few places including the Dilmun Club Stables, Shakhoora Riding Centre and the Bahrain Riding School. You’ll love this sport for the close engagement with an animal and its relaxing benefits (even though it might seem quite a vigorous activity). Go on, put on your riding boots as you take a ride with the breeze flying through your saddle. GO: Visit Twin Palms Riding Centre for an unforgettable horseriding experience. TOUR THE FORTS Rich in culture and heritage, the forts in Bahrain are an absolute must-visit. These rich cultural sites including the likes of Qal’at al Bahrain, Arad Fort, Buhamer Fort and more are not only historically significant but also tell fascinating archaeological stories dating back centuries ago. Our favourite is the stunning representation of Bahrain’s rich history, Qal’at al Bahrain - or more popularly known as Bahrain Fort - was an important trading port throughout the centuries and is brimming with historical inventories. The site is especially gorgeous when it’s lit up in the evening and you’re likely to see everything from impromptu horse rides to locals getting their daily steps in. This time of year, the sites become a great place to explore, to go for a jog, or to take a casual stroll. GO: Visit www.culture.gov.bh for more information on these beautiful sites.

Reflecting a lot of Grime and hip-hop, “Vossi Bop” mixes things up by talking abut everything from recognition and confidence to taking shots at politicians. A super infectious bop, the track sees Stormzy experimenting with trap while also slipping in some social commentary. Another hit from the British rapper, “Crown” sees him exploring his vulnerable and more melodic side as a vocalist. The beautifully-sung hook and rapid-fire lyricism are definitely one of his best works yet. rom drawing square versions of prominent public figures to remaking Vincent Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night in just 10 minutes – Fatema has a way with art – and it was her imagination and belief in personalisation that led to the birth of Square People, around five years ago. “I was thinking of making my mother a birthday card,” Fatema recalls. “I’ve always loved the idea of creating personalised cards and gifts ever since I was young. I decided that I would draw myself, my sister and my brother but I wasn’t really sure how at first, so I started with a draft where I drew three squares representing the three of us,” she continues. “I knew that I wanted to draw in cartoon since I’m more familiar with that type of art and after a little brainstorming session, I chose The Three Musketeers as the theme of the card. I drew the same face for all three characters: button-like eyes, a small nose and a smile on the side as the mouth. Then I started personalising each character,” Fatema says. This included adding small details to reflect each of the siblings’ style and personality and resulted in a card that her mother absolutely adored. This was Fatema’s drive; she would then find herself drawing square faces on spare paper and even napkins at cafés, hence the formation of Square People. What started off as a personalised gift, turned into a project of passion which spawned a number of more cards for other family members on occasions such as birthdays, weddings, baby showers and even when someone got a promotion. “I found myself drawing them [square people] for no reason at all and it felt like this is what I’m meant to do,” Fatema explains. “Square people is a colourful world with endless possibilities and it has allowed me to express myself in a creative way while putting a smile on the faces of many.” Though her self-talent discovery of Square People happened by chance, Fatema has in fact been drawn to the art world from a young age. She always preferred drawing books and colouring over toys. “As a kid, my ultimate joy was going stationery shopping and getting lost within the aisles of pens, papers, paint and brushes,” she reminisces. “I grew up watching my mom doodle on notebooks and magazines and anything she could get her hands on. She inspired my love for doodling to the very last detail. “At the same time, I was inspired by landscapes and scenery painting as I’d watch my uncle spend hours painting and bringing a memory or a picture to life,” she adds. “That sense of pride when he’d hang his finished painting made me love art even more. Apart from that, my love for cartoons inspired my work with Square People.” Talking of cartoons, Fatema leans more towards drawing with a comic approach due to the clean black lines. Occasionally, she reverts to traditional pencil sketches because they help her to practice, especially when she’s hung up on a drawing – akin to writer’s block. When Fatema envisions an idea or a drawing, she always imagines it sketched and outlined with her 0.3 or 0.5 pen and that sets the tone for the drawing. “When I attempt to imitate a real-life image, I always end up adding a touch of cartoon to it and that’s when I accepted and embraced the fact fact magazine

41

• ARTS INTERVIEW that I’ll always want to draw in this comic way,” Fatema shares. “Cartoon has been a major part of our lives and has brought joy to the lives of many which is why everyone wants to see a cartoon version of themselves. It’s exciting and it makes sense to me and I love drawing and bringing joy through my art.” When it comes to describing her artistic style for someone who isn’t familiar with her work, Fatema refers to her favourite description, given by a friend who said: “After a first look at your work, a person would be able to recognise any of your drawings at first glance because it carries your essence; simple yet whimsical.” This has left a smile on Fatema’s face ever since. Infusing cartoon with mixed media, and different colours and textures – all outlined with semi-clean black lines, Fatema has created her very own niche on a very loud arts scene. Occasionally, she adds her signature henna/ arabesque doodles for an extra touch of something endearing. Square People’s charm also lies in the fact that Fatema is an advocate for shedding light on the importance of recycling and how little decisions can go a long way. Fatema started off using recycled items like cardboard boxes and menus, adding depth and dimension to her artwork. She would use them as props to dress up her square people which were mostly girls at first. She even used flowers, leaves, fruits, nuts and candy wrappers – anything that fit. By using a recycled item for her art, she manages to change its trajectory to something that will stay on our planet for a long time without causing any harm. “Ever since we were kids, my father taught my sisters and I the importance of recycling and preserving the environment, and I guess that value was subconsciously reflected into my art, especially with Square People” Fatema tells us. “I feel like there’s so much that can be done with recycled items; you just need to give them that second chance.” Now that’s a creative message that we can definitely support! Fatema’s art is centred on a contemporary concept through its use of uncommon, modern-day materials and themes. One of the greatest impacts on her work and how she navigates this saturated landscape is with social media. “The fact that I’m exposed to an endless sea of art and talented artists online has had a rather positive impact in motivating me to be more productive with my art,” she says. “I find that the artistic trends and initiatives that were introduced on social media such as “Inktober” have motivated so many to think outside the box and has exposed artists to people within the same community and beyond, bringing them together through their interests and passion for art,” she adds. “It’s humbling, and it’s refreshing but it can sometimes be a struggle to stay true to your own style without any influences from the outside.” Picasso is amongst one of Fatema’s biggest artistic influences. She also counts comic books from her childhood, including Majid and Archie comics, as well as nature and stories of strength, struggles, determination and fearlessness as a huge inspiration to strive on with her art and lead a life of gratitude. One of her most humble pieces of advice for young budding artists is to “never throw away something you consider an ‘unsuccessful’ or ‘failed’ attempt,” but instead to use everything you create to track your progress and second, you can always go back and fix or complete it another time. “We change and our perspectives change, so it’s always a good idea to give it another chance,” Fatema says. 42

resh and vibrant, Voco Dubai is an IHG hotel that introduces guests to another side of the hospitality giant. Located on Sheikh Zayed Road, taking prime position close to a number of tourist hotspots including the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall just a short drive away. From the moment we step through its doors, Voco exudes a sense of effortless comfort and convenience. On first impressions we find the staff at Voco to be warm and welcoming. We’re quickly taken up to the lounge for a private check-in, as is customary for all suite guests. We’re given a couple of packs with locally-made dates as a welcome – a sweet gesture that brings in a sense of place for guests in the yummiest way. Check-in is quick and simple, and we’re issued a key in mere minutes – efficiency is definitely at the forefront here.

BEST NIGHT’S SLEEP

What makes the accommodation at Voco Dubai stand out is all the little playful touches and thoughtful details. All of the 471 guestrooms have been recently refurbished with modern décor and considerate extras that make for a comfortable stay. The one-bedroom suite is designed with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the hotel’s location in the heart of the city. Sweeping views over Dubai are a fabulous sight especially at sunset. The suite is all about space. Divided into two separate parts, what we really love is the number of different nooks that you can settle into. Whether you’re here on business, leaisure, or a personal staycation, there is ample space to spread out. A huge and very cosy chaise longue is the exact place to curl up with a hot cuppa and Netflix, whilst a practical workspace makes for the ideal spot to check emails and get a little bit of work done. Enjoy a deep soak in the sunken bath tub, surrounded by an invigorating aerated shower accompanied by Aveda amenities, right before you hit the couch and put your feet up with room service and a film on the large-screen smart TV to chill in front of. Now, we’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels, but never have we experienced the most restful night’s sleep as we did at Voco Dubai. The super comfy new beds are covered in crisp white linens, perfectly plumped duvets and pillows that guarantee (and we can vouch for this) a refreshing night’s sleep. There’s even a walk-in wardrobe with plenty of room for several outfits if you’re heading for a night out in the city! The elegant suite with its lounge vibe is perfect for couples, small families and groups of friends. Choose your favourite outfit from the walk-in wardrobe before heading for a night out in the city that never sleeps.

estled amongst the exotic Kaafu Atoll and Embood Hoo Lagoon, taking pride of place on a remote island, lays a multi-island leisure and entertainment project, Crossroads Maldives. Accessible in just 15 minutes by speedboat from Velna International Airport in Malé, the destination boasts not one but two incredible resorts that provide travellers with individuality and excitement. HARD ROCK HOTEL MALDIVES First up, we check into the stunning Hard Rock Hotel for two nights. Our expectations were high as the brand carries such a strong reputation all over the world, and it’s safe to say that every expectation was exceeded. Stepping off the speedboat, we received a very warm welcome by the Hard Rock team. Refreshing drinks and relaxed backdrops set the tone for our mini break. Hard Rock Hotel focuses on the little things, so you can be sure of a memorable and unique stay. Inspired by local culture, tropical architecture is infused with contemporary design features. Our favourite touch is the tailoring that can be done to suit every guest’s musical tastes. You can enjoy exclusive brand offerings and amenities including The Sound of Stay music programme, offering complimentary use of Fender guitars and amps, and Crosely record players for in-room jam sessions. It’s no surprise that there is a big focus on music here. After all, the brand is known for its oneof-a-kind blend of music, entertainment, iconic merchandise and authentic, American fare. Of course, accommodation is subtle but stunning. We stay in a gorgeous beach villa, which offers modern decor with breath-taking beach views. Each of the beach villas comes with its own private butler and 24-hour hotel services – adding a real sense of escape and luxury to the stay. Outside of the villa there is plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool at the front of the property, state-of-the-art fitness centre and the signature Rock Spa. Our days were planned perfectly with a mixture of both relaxing on sandy beaches, spa time and fitness and self-defence classes. Our favourite, however, was the music-infused yoga programme, aptly named Rock Om. It’s everything a yogi and a music-lover will appreciate – and if you’re into both then this is one activity that should be high up on your list of things to do here. The Rock Spa offered an extensive menu of treatments and massages to suit every wellbeing wish. We opted for the signature deluxe massage in the Rock Spa. Traditional techniques are

Focus is placed on the reflexology points on the face, scalp and feet to help rebalance energy and deliver you with a renewed state of mind. The vibrant Cafe features bright, eclectically designed interiors, offering 225 colourful seats and 13 pieces of iconic memorabilia that shines the spotlight on icons such as The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Imagine Dragons, along with other legendary artists. Hard Rock Cafe Maldives also features a unique chandelier comprised of 600 glass bottles, displayed above the bar. It’s truly a sight for sore eyes and we couldn’t stop instagramming it! The Maldives’ Cafe’s Rock Shop also offers musicinspired items as well as collectible Hard Rock Cafe merchandise. Fans can acquire exclusive Maldivesspecific merchandise and much-coveted signature pins at this retail location. It’s worth visiting alone just for this if you’re a devoted Hard Rock admirer. T

he BMW brand is synonymous with luxury, style and superior performance. They have been producing outstanding vehicles for almost a century and do not show any signs of slowing down. When FACT was invited by Euro Motors to test drive the new 8 Series M850i xDrive Convertible, we happily obliged. Our first impression of this convertible was that it is aesthetically stunning – a BMW whose body work lives up to its powerful performance – yes, we’re here for it. The master designers at BMW have created a truly magnificent vehicle that turns heads at every corner. This state-of-the-art sports car has a character all of its own, one that radiates high-performance and modern extravagance. Strong yet light-weight materials including aluminium, magnesium and carbon fibre reinforced plastic have been extensively used to reduce the weight of the vehicle, adding to its performance capabilities. The anthracite soft top with silver effects blends effortlessly into the dynamic lines of the vehicle and we could not wait to get out on the open road with the top down. Despite its elegant curves, there is no mistaking that this car has been built with power and speed in mind. The wide, lowslung front end, complete with standard LED headlights, exudes sporting intent and gives the vehicle a confident presence. Powerfully flared wheel arches housing 20-inch M light alloy wheels, slim all-LED rear light clusters and twin exhaust tail pipes all add to this car’s already striking appearance. The competent nature of the 8 Series Convertible continues in the design of the interior. Ambient lighting greeted us as soon as we slipped into the cabin, illuminating the lavish layout. At the simple push of a button located on the centre console, the soft top folded away in approximately 15 seconds, which is possible to do even at speeds of up to 50 km/h. At this point, the full splendour of the car revealed itself to us in all of its glory. The materials used throughout the interior are of premium quality and the overall design is both beautiful and functional. The electronically operated sports seats with built in head restraints feature a Merino leather trim and are possibly the most comfortable seats we have experienced to date. Passengers still have plenty of head room when the top is up as well as leg and shoulder room, ensuring everyone a comfortable ride. The rear seats provide excellent lateral support and integral head restraints, allowing all occupants to share in the sportscar feel. The boot of this convertible has a capacity of 440-litres which is big enough to accommodate three golf bags. This model is equipped with The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation function that includes a high-quality display network, consisting of a high-resolution 10.25-inch touchscreen Control Display, along with a fully digital, 12.3-inch screen instrument display. We soon managed to find our way around this system and were impressed by how functional and practical it was. Remember that power we talked about? The M850i xDrive Convertible boasts a supreme 4.4-litre, V8 engine that produces an exnihilating sound that is amplified by the M Sport exhaust system. We could not help but smile from ear-to-ear as pressure 64

fact magazine

was applied to the accelerator and we feltthe wind through our hair. With a maximum output of 390kW/530hp and a peak torque of 750Nm, we were soon pressed hard against our seats, suddenly grateful for the support they provided. This absolute monster of an engine allows this vehicle to surge from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds! The engine links up with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission which comes with shift paddles on the steering wheel as standard, for a manual gear changing option. The latest generation of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, ensures the drive power on offer is efficiently channelled onto the road, supplying unapparelled performance on the tarmac. This car’s power is complimented by its’ highly responsive breaking and traction control systems. In order to ensure the safety of the driver and the passengers, this convertible houses an array of cutting-edge safety systems. These include Head-Up display, Driving Assistant, Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Breaking Function and Lane Departure Warning, amongst many others. We cannot speak highly enough of the 8 Series Convertible. It was definitely one of our most exciting test drives to date and we can only encourage all those hunting for an exceptional new sports vehicle to contact Euro Motors and book a test drive today. ✤

MASTER OF FLAVOURS

On our recent visit to the award-winning re/ Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, a whole new dining experience was brought to the table; one that highlighted the restaurant’s innovative collaborations and enthusiasm for keeping things varied and exciting for guests. O

n the 50th floor of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, a dimly-lit venue is warm and intimate, filled with the subdued chatter and laughter of diners who are here for one thing only – a speciallycurated menu by visiting Chef, Moeen Abuzaid in conjunction with the culinary flair of the restaurant’s very own Executive Chef, Brian Becher. The two food virtuosos spent time traipsing through Bahrain’s fish markets and farms to pick up ingredients and inspiration for this extraordinary dinner. “This invitation to Four Seasons in Bahrain is a very special and unique one for me,” Chef Moeen told us. “First and foremost, the hospitality and welcome has been overwhelming. Chef Brian has been a great friend and I'm happy to have been invited. It's a beautiful place with incredibly kind people.” Chef Moeen is a New York-based culinarian known for his pioneering techniques to re-imagine and elevate classic Arabic food. The celebrated Jordanian chef hosted two dinners at both Wolfgang Puck eateries in the hotel. Bringing together traditional Arabic flavours to the restaurant’s Asian cuisine, the menu paid homage to classic Arabic ingredients, amped up by the unique additions of South East Asian tastes. “I remain true to Arabian cuisine,” Chef Moeen said. “What changes with my cuisine are the techniques I use to elevate already familiar dishes and flavours. The food I create may be familiar to your palate except you have never seen it presented in this way and the flavours are completely elevated through technique.” We were SO ready for this. We began the epicurean adventure with a salad made up of kale, papaya, bulgur and basil. The result is an amalgamation of deep greens that taste even better than they look. The slight crunch of the kale adds a wonderful texture to the fresh concoction which sees the use of a major grain – bulgur – in Middle Eastern cuisine. Its nuttiness perfectly complements the sweetand-sour tinge of the papaya which

brings in the exotic element. A fine start. The next dish follows suit; duck khubz, avocado tahini, bok choy and daqoos. The khubz is by far the most pleasant revelation of the evening. A thin roti style bread topped with delicious shreds of duck whilst the side of bok choy covers rich meaty slices of the same. So far, both presentation and taste have equally matched up. But does one matter more than the other? “There can't be one or the other for me,” Chef Moeen shares. “But, taste triumphs always. A pretty dish is useless without a flavour profile, which is important for all aspiring chefs to know.” A dish that had us all in awe was the Sikken, grape leaf, black lime, Baharat dashi. One of the most used ingredients in Arabic cuisine, the vine leaf here is used wonderfully to conceal a juicy piece of sikken – a buttery white fish that, admittedly, we’d never heard of before this dinner. Cooked to perfection, the silky-smooth fish slides onto our forks like velvet whilst the subtle pungency from black lime adds a lovely thrill. For the carnivorous amongst us, the 18-hour Wagyu Beef Short Rib is an utterly brilliant amalgamation of tender meat and familiar flavours. Grilled on the binchotan with pomegranate molasses, the root vegetable salsify and the spicy kick of the shatta and coconut emulsion round out another fantastic plating. Chef Moeen told us that the biggest compliment he could receive as a chef is when diners say that his food reminds them of home – and this meaty dish certainly had us reminiscing Sunday dinners with the family. We end a pretty perfect meal with a strong dessert contender. It’s the one dish that Chef Moeen said received the most surprising reaction from guests. “The tapioca pudding definitely. There are so many layers and flavours one wouldn't expect,” he explained. “The rose water emulsion, using Jordanian spices with hwayej and mango. As well as adding the candied pistachios and baked caramelised sugar. All these combined made this the hit of the night.” Chef Moeen’s idea of Fine Arabian Dining is something that definitely translates from idea to plate to palate. “I believe the community this menu was created for is a perfect fit for my style of cooking,” he said. “I believe the menu was received well. I'm happy there was such a great reaction to the food, I couldn't have asked for more.” This special collaboration is also proof of the originality and willingness of Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay team who value thoughtful and endearing food partnerships to keep their culinary game, strong. This, we can definitely applaud. ✤

S

amawar Restaurant at Ramada by Wyndham Manama City Centre is a beautiful surprise. The sprawling venue takes up space that we were pleasantly amazed to see. The event hall is basked in natural light with a greenhousestyle design that reflects a large elegant glasshouse – we can see this as the perfect spot for both an intimate and a large-scale wedding – the space is gorgeous. There’s a stage at one end of the room and comfy tables dotted around with a capacity of up to 200. The rings lights add a lovely sophisticated touch to the whole relaxed ambience. In the restaurant, there’s plenty of casual seating areas. The venue is divided into a smoking and nonsmoking area, to cater to families with children. On the terrace, shisha is served to patrons who wish to lounge with their favourite flavour at hand. Samawar had its grand opening last month and was welcomed to roaring success. After trying out their food, we can see just why! Our culinary tour started with a mountain of Fattoush Salad. Super fresh, every ingredient was to the best of its quality. Crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, cool cucumbers, sliced radish and, what we loved the most, a literal tower of fried pieces of pita bread. The portion size is incredibly generous and can easily fil three to four people, happily. Next up was the Kibbeh be Seniya, our standout dish of the entire meal. Traditionally, kibbeh is simple, moreish bulgur cracked wheat croquettes stuffed with minced onions, lean ground beef, pine nuts and Middle Eastern spices. At Samawar, there’s a creative spin. The idea of a kibbeh is deconstructed and presented as a layered sphere – the taste is exquisite. Who knew that the real magic in a kibbeh was to take it apart? With a side of yogurt sauce, this is one dish that we will be ordering again. If you love tender meat, the Lamb Ghoozi will satisfy all your cravings. The huge piece of lamb shank falls off the fork like butter, we glide through the meat with such enthusiasm. To accompany is yellow rice and a sauce that adds rich flavour to every bite. The Maghrabiya Risotto Salmon is one of the best dishes we’ve tried in a long time. The much-loved traditional Lebanese couscous is infused with pine nuts, whilst the succulent salmon is wonderfullycharred and accompanied by a pesto sauce that was mouth-watering. It’s a stunning dish to photograph for the ‘gram, but more importantly, each ingredient complements the other tastefully. Highly recommended for seafood lovers. The Chicken Freekeh Roll is what we end with – and it’s a lovely finale. A very homely dish that has the subtly strong earthy textures of freekeh with the deeply nourishing bites of chicken. 86

O

n a warm Friday afternoon, we took a seat at Indigo, the rooftop restaurant located at the luxury boutique hotel, The Merchant House. Situated in the heart of Manama, right next door to Bab al Bahrain, you would be hard-pressed to remember that you’re actually in the Gulf, let alone in the middle of a bustling market area. There is no noise; just the gentle breeze and the chatter of our fellow diners. Lovely! Indigo Rooftop Restaurant offers a distinctive ambiance for a refreshingly different Friday Brunch, one where the partition doors are wide open and you can choose to either sit inside on plush cushioned seats or dine al fresco on its beautiful rooftop garden terrace. Indigo is what we imagine exists in faraway Mediterranean homes where orange trees grow and the prettiest flowers bloom. Inspired by the travel experiences of Executive Chef Robert Shipman, the incredible Friday Brunch menu pairs interesting flavours and ingredients that are authentic to both Mediterranean and Asian cuisines. What strikes immediately about this place – aside from its chic floral décor and gorgeous artworks – is the high level of service. Staff are attentive without being intrusive, keeping our water topped up and recommending drinks (we’d urge you to order the very unique bubble gum mocktail), whilst informing us that the food is served sharing style, straight to the table, and if there’s a dish you really like, then you’re more than welcome to request it again. On top of that, any dietary requirements and allergies are enquired on from the serving staff and they will bring you alternative dishes to suit your needs. Firstly, this brunch concept has us feeling all warm and content. The idea that there is no buffet set up to traipse around actually helps us to relax. We sink further into our cushioned seats when we cast eyes on the menu items – it’s extensive (and we love that). Made up of “Breakfast”, “Bits & Bites”, “Main” and “Sweet” – expect to try around 12 dishes, each packed with innovative flavours, ranging from the classics to the more fusion interpretations. Our feast begins with a plate of Poached Egg with chopped avocado, smoked salmon and salsa verde; Grilled Halloumi topped with smoked chipotle jam and date syrup; and the fluffy Blueberry Pancake with vanilla cream and maple syrup. A strong start with the breakfast items, we were particularly impressed with the Poached Egg which had a firm white and a gooey-but-stillrunny yolk, and was complemented perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. Similarly, the pancakes 90

Next up was Bits & Bites – hands down our favourite selection. The Wafu Salad is crisp with a stunning sesame soy dressing – it’s the small things that count – whilst the Sea Bass Sashimi is the biggest, and most pleasant, surprise. Thin slices of the delicious fish are presented with black plum sauce, yuzu, basil, jalapeno and kizami wasabi. UNREAL. The taste is an explosion of the freshest flavours with the plum sauce adding a light sweetness and tartness, balanced by the richness of jalapeno and wasabi. The Salmon and

Avocado Rolls are scooped up in haste as each taste like they were literally just made. Both the tender Beef Rib Ssamjang with pipirrana salad and the 18-hour Lamb Shank Tartine with yuzu kosho salsa are every meat-lovers’ fantasy. Though served in small bites, you’ll taste enough to know that the cooking methods in the kitchen and the quality of the meat are top-notch. For mains, three dishes make their way to the table. Our favourite had to be the Seared Scallops and Prawns with Sicilian pesto, potato dauphinoise and roasted cherry tomatoes. A hearty plate, it’s the perfect winter warmer recipe that seafood lovers will appreciate. The scallops and buttery and delicate, just the way we like them! The Risotto Funghi is another knockout – packed with porcini mushroom risotto, Parmiggiano Reggiano and truffle oil – it’s everything you want from a risotto and more. It’s rich and creamy, and comes with zero warning about how quickly you’re going to eat it. By the time the Roast chicken Breast with sweet potatoes and green peppercorn jus comes out, we’re half way to a food coma – but as they say, there’s a different stomach for dessert. The Chocolate Fondant steals the show with its hot, melted centre paired with strawberry ice cream, alongside the Lime Panna Cotta with fresh mango sauce – think two very different, but equally pleasing desserts. Indigo sure does satisfy every palate. At just BD28 with soft drinks and BD38 with premium drinks, you’re definitely getting your money’s worth here. Children aged five to 10 get 50% off and children aged four and below dine for free, so there’s another reason why this could be a great family Friday afternoon. For the chilled-out vibes, excellent food and friendly service, we’ll be back sooner rather than later.✤ fact magazine

Dodging A New Year’s Injury Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidence-based management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

The combination of feeling ‘permanently full’ after weeks of festive food and the start of New Year often encourages us to do new exercise routines, but how to avoid causing yourself an injury? Be kind to yourself, if you are returning to your normal exercise routine after a few weeks. You will likely need to start at around 70% of what you were performing prior to your break. Exercise on alternate days, to assess the effect of your previous session and allow your body to recover. If you are starting a new kind of solo exercise, make sure you have the appropriate equipment – there is nothing like an ill-fitted bike or pair of running shoes to cause injury! Or if you are starting a group class, make sure to join a ‘beginners’ class, even if you feel it may be too easy – better to start a nice gentle class than not be able to walk for a week! Always take a friend with you, it can be a nice way to stay motivated and to feel less conspicuous as you are not the only ‘newbie’ in the class. If at any time during the start of your New Year’s get fit regime you feel anything that isn’t right or any pain that doesn’t resolve in a couple of days, it is always best to see your physiotherapist. ✤

New Beginnings

New Year, New Goals

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Aanchal Duggal is an avid bibliophile and fashion enthusiast trying to make a living out of doing what she loves. Aanchal is new to Bahrain & exploring!

2020 is here, wow we are truly living in the future with all manner of opportunities ahead of us. Will this be the decade you finally make the changes you’ve always wanted to in life? Will you be dedicated to take that first step? What is your number one goal? Without announcing it to the world for the next 90 days, dedicate yourself exclusively to that goal. Whether it be a complete lifestyle change when it comes to health and fitness, starting a new business or making plans to move to another country, just START. It’s time to tap into your potential and let go of the things that were holding you back and keeping you from living your best life. In my job I hear some sad stories of people being ridiculed just because they have decided that they no longer want to be unhappy living a lie just to make others feel comfortable. So along with detoxing your body, detox your life of all the toxic fake friends and family members that just love telling you you’re never going to make it. If you have 20kg or 5kg to lose, if you want to get totally ripped or run an Iron Man, it’s up to you. Will it be easy? No, but it will ABSOLUTELY be worth it. You may not be where you want to be in life now and that’s ok but doing nothing about it isn’t. If nobody encourages you, encourage yourself! ✤

With the New Year upon us, the need to be the best version of yourself is at an all time high. Swept up in this wave to be better, I have tried to improve and introduce new things into my life almost every year now. After = relentless trying and failing to keep up with my New Year’s Resolutions, I have realised that the only thing keeping me from reaching these goals is my mindset. Instead of practicing a growth mindset, my contentedness with failing to achieve these personal objectives was hampering my motivation and willingness. After missing the gym for the fifth time in a week, I decided to switch things up and create a positive mindset to increase the probability of me reaching my goals. By acquiring the right mindset for success, I will be able to look past the internal and external limitations to truly get where I want to be in life. Instead of focusing on the main objective, I will aim to focus on the little victories on my way to the finish line. By eliminating negativity created by others or me and staying true to my intentions, I’ll finally be able to keep my eyes on the prize. No matter how much you want to change and grow, your perspective and mindset can make all the difference. Visualising your goals, setting a time limit and finding your purpose behind it are critical to achieving all your hopes and dreams. Here’s wishing everyone a happy and productive New Year! ✤

Clare Bromilow Director of Public Relations and Communications at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay What have been your first impressions of Bahrain and the stunning Four Seasons property here? Having lived in various places around the world, from the middle of the Pacific Ocean to western Europe, I was looking for an entirely different experience and stumbled upon the opportunity to relocate to Bahrain and join the iconic and prestigious Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Four months in and I can truly say it has exceeded all expectations. What surprised (and continues to surprise) me about Bahrain is just how easy it’s been so far. The people here are friendly, down-toearth and welcoming beyond words, the Kingdom is beautiful, and the commute (compared to the likes of London or Bangkok) is probably the most welcome change! 98
