THE EDITOR
Hello, Summer!
“Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.” – Regina Brett
N
ow, we may not have much greenery to lie in and branches to hang off, but what we do have more of in the summer is free time. I love the sleepy days and laid back pace of life that ensues in the GCC through the hot months, and though the temperature outside can get way too uncomfortable for more than an hour of tanning (hats off to anyone who can do a whole day by the pool in 50°C) we’re only steps away from a/c to help cool us down. But, perhaps, the thing I enjoy most about the Bahrain summer is the amount of things to do indoors – many places and activities that are left undiscovered until the heat kicks in. Turn to p33 and get out those diaries because we’ve got the ultimate Summer Survival guide for everyone who’s staying in the country over the next few months. Brunches, lunches, themed nights, spa days, and indoor entertainment – trust me when I say, there’s no need to stop having fun just because it’s too hot outside! For the culture vultures out there, Bahrain Summer Festival is back with a full programme of events and entertainment for all ages. As official media sponsors of the 2016 edition, we have the full line-up of what’s coming up (p25), so pencil in all the happenings that you like the sound of - I’m sure you’ll find something that peaks your interest! Style-savvy readers can turn to our fashion, beauty and home pages for inspiration in all areas of a perfect summer lifestyle, whilst art fans will be happy to know that creativity never sleeps, with fantastic exhibitions and art initiatives worth checking out throughout the summer months. And when the “beat the heat” mantra just isn’t working, you can always get your favourite box set out and binge-watch your way through summer; GoT, season one to six, here I come!☺ Shabana Adam, Editor-in-Chief shabana@fact-magazine.com 4

Spitfire at the Museum A new exhibition is on display at the Bahrain National Museum, celebrating the strong civil and military aviation heritage between Bahrain and the UK.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the iconic Supermarine Spitfire, probably the most famous fighter aircraft in history, which first flew 80 years ago. This is the aircraft that defended the skies during the Second World War, including the defence of Bahrain. This Spitfire is on loan to the Bahrain National Museum from the RAF Museum, in partnership with BAE Systems. At the opening of the exhibition, HE Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Culture for the Kingdom of Bahrain, said: “We are delighted that today, as we celebrate the 200 years of friendship with the United Kingdom, we are launching such a distinguished exhibition that displays glimpses of a long and solid relationship with the United 12
fact magazine
Kingdom in the field of military and civil aviation. “Spitfire, a collaboration between BAE Systems and Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, offers an opportunity for the audience to be able to learn more about the different aircrafts that represent the important cooperation between the two countries,” she added. The Supermarine Spitfire remains the iconic British fighter of the Second World War, and Britain was not alone in its fight. The Gulf Fighter Fund, which included Bahrain, financed the purchase of 11 Spitfires to aid the war effort. These were funded by all sections of the community in the Arabian Gulf. In total, the Fighter Fund raised £50,000 (BD31,000) and six Spitfires bore the name Bahrain. ✤
Other aircrafts on display include: The Anson - designed and built in the North West of England by Avro, was used to establish the Gulf Aviation Company in 1950 which today has become Gulf Air, the national airline of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Vickers VC-10 - used for commercial flights into Bahrain by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) from 1964 and by Gulf Air in the 1970s. More recently RAF VC-10s were based in Bahrain during the 1991 Gulf War. The Blackburn Buccaneer - based at RAF Muharraq. This aircraft was designed and build in Brough in the UK, a factory that would eventually build a fleet of Hawk training aircraft for the RBAF some 40 years later. Concorde, which in January celebrated the 40th anniversary of its inaugural flight into Bahrain on 21 January 1976 when the aircraft made the world’s first supersonic commercial flight, is an iconic symbol of progress, with the ability to fly at 22 miles a minute. This milestone in aviation history only took Concorde three hours and 17 minutes to reach Bahrain from London Heathrow. These aircraft all demonstrate the fantastic story of aerospace development and innovation in the UK and the way that the Kingdom of Bahrain has been a constant supporter and adopter of new technologies. The exhibition runs until October 23 at Bahrain National Museum.

In spectacular displays of dexterity, chefs cut, stir, season, and divide each diner’s portion onto plates on the teppan. As the food is prepared on the same surface that keeps it warm, meals are served as soon as they are ready. Teppanyaki has to be eaten leisurely. t Le Méridien Bahrain City Centre you’ll find timeless design that pays homage to the brand’s Parisian heritage of locally inspired art, inviting the curious and open-minded to unlock a series of rewarding discoveries at the hotel about Bahrain and local culture. The initiative is dubbed Unlock Art - which gives unique access to an array of forward-thinking galleries and institutions for the culturally curious traveller, in partnership with Al Bareh Art Gallery. During a recent visit to the hotel, we discovered a number of the culturally-inspired artworks that take this hospitality brand above and beyond.
THE DHOW A beautiful, large Dhow sculpture by Syrian artist Lutfi Al Romhein takes prime position in the hotel lobby, by the entrance to the hotel’s Baharat restaurant. Titled Sky Ship, and measuring 400 x 333 x 75cm, the artwork is inspired by the traditional dhows that have been used by the Bahraini population for fishing and pearling for hundreds of years. The dhow sculpture’s contours and curved areas are reminiscent of the mellowness of the sea and the excursion of the fish within. The illustration of this work’s element, “Inox”, was used to describe the boat taking the light around it, opposing to all directions, as if dancing with the lot around it, viewing it as fixed yet mobile. This creates movement within the work.

THE PEARL WORLD MAP You’ll see this stunning piece as you enter the lobby, located behind the check-in desks. It was produced by Thaer Hilal and is called The Silk Road. A staggering 40,000 acrylic pearls were used on canvas, on wood, for the piece to be complete. The artwork, which measure 300 x 600cm, illustrates the abstract path of The Silk Road as a way to emphasise the importance of this historical path for the exchange of culture and trading. It exhibits a pattern of the Silk path, from Far East Asia, all the way to “Delmon” Bahrain, where the world recognised this divine beauty. The white pearl refers to the harmony that covers the water area within the map, showing its purity and source of happiness and prosperity. The green pearl composes a semblance of the world’s fields as it refers to occupied areas, since human interactions underlay hidden secrets, with rich contradictions. The red pearls represent the land silk road that cuts across ancient Persia, through Europe, heading towards the Eastern Mediterranean. The blue pearls refer to the Asian marine tracks, East to South India, and across the Arabian Gulf, Oman and Bahrain “Delmon”, then towards the South of Iraq, South of Yemen, the red sea and the coast of South Africa.
ART LINK MAPPING BAHRAIN Discover Bahrain in over 24 hours - the Art Link has been unveiled featuring 1440 series of time lapse photography of the island to ignite the curiosity of
what this destination is like as you walk through the hotel corridor. Artist Roberto Leopardo took the first photograph on the beach at sunrise, proceeding to capture a photography every minute, continuously, for a 24-hour period, moving through the country. A collection of 1,440 images are presented here in sequential order.
BURNING RIVERS
By nature, all streams are linked, El Baz makes these connections visible by giving us fragments of the global aquatic mapping. He then turns these pathways into abstract and precious lines through the artificial act of the golden embroidery, questioning the notion of cartographic convention created by humans. The embroidery reflects the Kurar Embroidery – an important cultural aspect of Bahrain’s heritage.
Moroccan artist Mohamed El Baz’s creation, The Rivers are Burning, is intricate golden thread embroidery on velvet, with six artworks at 100 x100cm, depicting the Mississippi, Danube, Tigre & Euphrates, Amazon, Congo, and Indus rivers. The artist questions the notions of borders, territories, belonging and difference, as many labels that create barriers between individuals.
The hotel also has unique, handembroidered calligraphy art as well as the one-of-a-kind shadow art in guest bedrooms, with each piece depicting a Middle-Eastern scene. With so many creative and innovative artworks being championed at Le Méridien Bahrain City Centre, you’ve got more than one reason to visit for your next cultural fix! ✤

Big Screen The Legend of Tarzan
What’s it about: The classic Disney film has been given a huge overhaul, seeing Tarzan return to the jungle in which he was born, at the hand of Parliament, to coerce those who live there into a peaceful union.
Director: David Yates cast: Margot Robbie, Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Waltz Why it’s worth watching? Everyone’s seen the 1999 Disney great, Tarzan, but it’s safe to say that although this film shares the same moniker, it’s a world of difference from the original. An action-packed storyline and a five-star cast bring this live action story to the forefront of 2016 reboots, ensuring that Disney’s oldtime classics are just as relevant and appealing to modern day cinema-goers. As well as the meaty storyline, there’s a ton of fantastic characters to sink your teeth into. Alexander with his tall, masculine form along with a brooding yet kind face makes him a perfect fit for our vine-hopping hero, whilst the beautiful Margot Robbie and her performance as the strong-willed, intelligent Jane will make you feel all the whirlwind emotions throughout. The standout performance, however, comes from Christoph Waltz in his role as Captain Rom. He’s the definition of bad guy and plays it so perfectly that you’ll have sparks of hate flying for him right from the start. Whether you’re here for the cast, the nostalgia or the beautiful cinematography, you’re sure to be blown away!
Highlights “As well as the meaty storyline, there’s a ton of fantastic characters to sink your teeth into. Alexander with his tall, masculine form along with a brooding yet kind face makes him a perfect fit for our vine-hopping hero...”
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates What’s it about: In a film true to our everyday reality, two brothers post an ad for wedding dates online which goes viral, but their dates aren’t exactly what they seem, seeing what was supposed to be a drama-free wedding take a turn for the worse.

Director: Jake Szymanski cast: Zac Efron, Adam DeVine, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza Why it’s worth watching? Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is one of those films that you watch and know for sure that you’ll feel good by the end of it. It’s silly and hilarious, which is what makes it so addictive. The fact that Zac Efron doesn’t take himself too seriously to pull off this roll makes him a pleasure to watch and if you were a fan of Pitch Perfect, then the inclusion of both Adam DeVine and Anna Kendrick will put a smile on your face. This film might not win any awards, but it’s sure to make its way back on your screens time and time again, with plenty of memorable dialogue and new convo one-liners!

Digital Distortion

By Iggy Azalea
Ellipsis
Their last album, Opposites, was a huge hit that catapulted Biffy Clyro onto a bigger music stage than ever before, and so, the band decided to take a break (naturally – it’s what we would do after all that fame and recognition), only to show up in 2016 to make a comeback with something completely different from their previous record something they insist sounds more like their earlier albums; raw and true. The first single from Ellipsis, Wolves of Winter was a sweet taste of what was to be expected. It, of course, has the raging guitar solos, but it’s also paired with beautiful vocals - something that is a common theme throughout the 14-track CD. It’s obvious that the influences have changed slightly on this album, with Hip Hop being one of the more present inspirations, almost giving this album a gritty sound. Biffy Clyro needed to do this, for both old fans and new; Ellipsis is constantly on the edge, ready to fall into the oblivion, yet teetering, remaining in that perfect limbo of chaotic calm.
After the success of her debut studio album, The New Classic, we’ve all been waiting patiently for a follow-up that would have us just as hyped about Iggy’s lyrical skills and beats. After plenty of struggles, Digital Distortion is finally here and, let’s just put it out there, Miss Azalea brought her A-game. With Team being the album’s lead single, she managed to send a powerful message, that she was back, and she didn’t need anyone’s help to smash it. This album is a lot less collab driven, something that made for a more passionate and stronger record; it still has the iconic Iggy sound, but it’s brought a lot more punch to the party, with the rap princess giving fans an insight into her much documented private life. On the other hand, it’ll also make you feel like a complete and utter bad ass whilst you’re pumping it in the car - now, that’s our kind of record!
Maya’s world is plunged into darkness when her father arranges for her to marry a King out of political convenience, something totally against her scholarly nature. However, this u-turn sees Maya going from an introverted girl, to a powerful Queen, finding her voice and pursuing her wants and desires. In an unexpected twist, we see the protagonist span reincarnated lives in order to solve an ancient mystery and take herself and loved ones away from the danger that she believes her husband’s secrets bring. With so many intricate details and discoveries at every turn, this book will take the rug right out from under you, just when you least expect it.

A HOSPITALITY MARRIAGE OF CONTEMPORARY AND CHARACTER, COMFORT AND CLASS, ALL BLENDED TOGETHER IN ONE HOTEL, YES, IT’S POSSIBLE. the rosewood abu dhabi is where you can relax and enjoy your next summer break in the gcc, if good accommodation, food, location and service is what you want. here are a few highlights from our recent stay in the uae capital...

When you think high-rise hotels, what comes to mind? Sleek, polished, designer? It’s no secret that tall, skyscraper-style accommodation is more often than not, super contemporary, and bordering on clinical. Though that’s not a bad thing, it’s always great to find a high-rise that has managed to find the right balance of modern meets classic. Enter, Rosewood Abu Dhabi, a beautiful 5-star hotel located on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi; this place is the epitome of luxury; with all the mod-cons you could want, yet maintains the character and charm of what you would find at a sophisticated boutique hotel. The iconic tower houses 154 guestrooms and 35 suites, 131 serviced residences, nine restaurants, and a stunning spa. The inspiration for the Handel Architects-designed tower comes from the glistening Arabian Gulf and the vast desert that surrounds Abu Dhabi city. As with every hotel in the Rosweood collection, the property embraces Rosewood’s A Sense of Place philosophy by reflecting the culture, history and geography of its location. The 34-storey tower is a dramatic modern structure covered with reflective glass, which was chosen for its daytime shimmer and its nighttime luminescence. The curvilinear architecture of the 470-foot-tall building is designed to suggest the movement in this vibrant city and the inspiration for the interiors of the hotel comes from the meeting of land and sea, desert and sky. With all the thought and care that’s gone into the construction and style of the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, it’s no surprise that from the moment we checked in, everything just seemed to fall into place, flawlessly…

contemporary tones and a high-tech, integrated iPad room management system (yes, you heard right!). The room is openplan, and is so thoughtfully designed that you can comfortably lay back and take a warm bath, whilst watching your favourite shows on the television, which is placed in a position that is easily viewable from the oversized tub – we tested it and it was spot on! The bathroom itself is set in fine Italian marble, featuring a private rain shower, double vanity, and luxury Roberto Cavalli amenities. There’s a sliding door partition between the bathroom and bedroom for privacy if necessary. The absolute standout, however, was the iPad in-room touch service. Now, you don’t have to be uber tech-savvy to enjoy the efficiency that it provides. Everything from drawing the curtains to dimming the lights, setting the temperature, changing the channels, and even checking out the inroom dining menu, is all cleverly available to adjust via the iPad. We were slightly skeptical about all the technology, because, usually, it means more room for glitches and problems. In this case, we were wrong!

ISLAND RIDES
A FACT received the keys to the latest model of the Porsche 911 991 Series, to put it through its paces. There have been some significant changes…
74
fact magazine
t first glance, there is very little difference to the new 911. There have been slight tweaks to the front air scoops, and new automatic cooling flaps, but that’s about it. However, despite the lack of visual updates, don’t for a second think that it’s the same as the previous model. There have been three major changes to the 911 Carreras that have made a real difference in terms of performance. On the previous range, all models except for the 911 Turbos were powered by naturally-aspirated 3.4 and 3.8 litre flatsix boxer engines. Now, the entire range is turbo-charged, with the Carrera and Carrera S models boasting a smaller twinturbo 3.0 litre engine that nevertheless puts out about 20hp more in both engines that their predecessors, with 365bhp on the Carrera, and 414bhp on the Carrera S. The BIG boost, however, comes in the torque, with the new models boasting an additional 60Nm each, with 450Nm on the Carrera, and 500Nm on the Carrera S. With the Sports Chrono package, this equates to a 0-100km/h time of 4.2 seconds for the Carrera, and 3.9 for the Carrera S, which makes it the first Carrera model to break the sub-four second barrier. The next major revolution on the new 911 is the introduction of rear-axle steering as an option. This technology was previously only seen on the 911 GT3 and Turbo, and the mighty 918. The rear-axle steering works by actually turning the wheels a couple of degrees. At low speeds, it turns in the opposite direction of the front wheels to improve the turning circle by effectively shortening the wheelbase. At high speeds, it turns in the same direction as the front wheels to effectively lengthen the wheelbase and improve traction and stability in the corners. The effect is incredible. In an exercise where we drove 911s with and without the system at track speeds, the rear-axle steering makes a massive difference. You have to drive each car differently, as the system allows you to turn into a corner so much more aggressively, and lay down the
ISLAND RIDES
power a lot more on the exit, making for massively quicker cornering. It’s hugely impressive. The last major change over the previous models is the introduction of the rotary ring drive mode selector with the Sports Chrono Package. From this you can select the ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’ settings we know from previous models. However, what it also features is the ‘Sport Response Button’. Once pushed, this button instantly adjusts the drive train for maximum acceleration for 20 seconds, for overtaking and so on. When you push it, the car instantly shifts down and throttle response is maximised, turning it into a lairy beast for a few seconds. You can either wait 20 seconds for it to time out, or press the button again to switch it off. So there you have it – despite minimal visual updates, the new 911 is a whole new machine, and takes the iconic Porsche into new realms of technological wizardry and general driving enjoyment. You’d expect nothing less from Porsche really! ✤ GO: Call the Porsche Centre Bahrain on 1745 9911 to book a test drive today. fact magazine

BMW M1 Hommage (2008) BMW Group Design presented the first in the line of Hommage vehicles – the BMW M1 Hommage – at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008 to mark the 30th birthday of the BMW M1. BMW 328 Hommage (2011) The BMW 328 Hommage was unveiled to the global public for the first time in 2011 to celebrate the 75th birthday of the legendary BMW 328 racing car. mazon has responded to its new product and service growth with devices of its own, one of those being this, the Amazon Echo. It is a portable smart speaker which works with Amazon’s Alexis, similar to Apple’s Siri, a voice activated software that can respond a wide range of commands, and learns to recognise your voice with more efficiency the more you use it. The speaker acts as its own Wifi network, with which all of your devices can link through the device’s software. This includes phones, tablets, laptops, and your house. Yes, your house. The Echo can link up with smart houses to give you voice control over things like lighting, curtains, alarms and so on, provided you have the right systems in place. You wake it up by saying “Alexa”, and then give your voice command. You can set timers, play a range of online audio streaming services like Spotify, Pandore or TuneIn radio, listen to the news headlines, order a cab from Uber and much, much more, and the list of services grows constantly.
The Amazon Echo
Verdict After using it for a while, we just grew increasingly impressed with every new thing we learned it could do. It recognises voice commands incredibly well, even from across a large room with a TV on in the background, and once you get used to using it, it seamlessly becomes part of your life without you even thinking about it. Truly awesome stuff. However, the one solitary down side we discovered was high-volume bass, which really lacks punch. It’s an area that is so easy to improve, and it is something that shouldn’t have let the speaker down. Expect premium audio-branded versions of the same technology soon. ✤

Khaki King Men are already making a case for khaki with the summer festival season coming up. Camo print tees are set to become THE staple, and looks great under a dark denim jacket for all things utility. Khaki lends itself perfectly to the laid back look of sportswear, as bomber jackets, hoodies, caps and dark green chinos or denim shorts take your style above the norm. What sets it apart from other gourmet destinations is its ability to successfully introduce fresh experiences for Bahrain’s foodies. We headed over to Bushido on a warm Sunday evening, to enjoy their brand new, and exciting food concept of Izakaya; an informal Japanese food gathering where small portions of the restaurant’s signature dishes are ordered from an a la carte menu, and savoured over several courses. take things up a notch to Sushi, Sashimi and Rolls – yes, what we know and love about Bushido! Amongst these familiar favourites was the novel, warm-to-thetouch Volcano Roll, the Scottish Salmon Sake Sushi and the succulent Sashimi Sea Bass Suzuki. It was however, the New Style Sashimi that got us properly excited. We promptly ordered all four options and were pleasantly surprised by the fusion of flavours each had to offer. The Escolar (butterfish) and the Tuna Wakame were served with a citrus and wasabi sauce, the Salmon Tataki with creamy apple and the Chili Yellowtail with spicy ponzu. All outstanding! These delectable new flavourings aside, it was the tenderness of the melt-in-yourmouth fish cuts, which really highlighted just how amazing, inivative and delectable the cusine was, that tantalised our taste buds. It was so good, our moreish palates would not let us move onto the dessert menu without another round of deliciousness! ASIAN FLAVOURS ON FLEEK
If you’re a fan of Pan-Asian cuisine, there’s a good chance that you rank Nu Asia as one of your favourite dining destinations in Bahrain. The restaurant has given its already popular menu a delicious boost of new flavours and we went to check out what’s on offer… fact magazine

ON THE MENU
“Innovation came in the form of the brand new Naan Pizza; a Nu Asia creation of naan topped with your favourite curries and cheese, then baked to a crispy edge and a soft centre.”
N
u Asia has become somewhat of a foodie institution amongst the local and expat communities who rely on the restaurant for hearty, flavour-packed fare, for a decent price tag. At FACT, we’re big fans of the sushi and Indian curries, but our favourite has to be the Chinese mixed chowmein – that dish never disappoints. Nu Asia promises to be an unparalleled casual dining destination with fantastic Asian food favourites, easily reachable locations (Seef, Budaiya, Juffair and Isa Town) and great value. Where many venues could get lost in the hype of different cuisines, Nu Asia has got it just right; four much-loved world foods, a variety-filled menu that equally represents each country’s delightful offerings, and ambient venues with good service. What else could you ask for? Well, we could always do with more of the same, right? Be prepared, because Nu Asia has polished up its menu and added some new items to the list. Alongside its already popular tandoori delicacies, colourful stir-frys, exotic curries, fresh sushi and more, you now have a whole host of vibrant, contemporary dishes, all with a tasty Asian twist. For appetisers, you have the Grilled Chicken Wings, Chicken Cheese Bombs and Beef Sutikku. The wings are mouthwateringly good with a smoky tandoor flavour, served with mint chutney, whilst the beef skewers satisfy the savoury side of our tastebuds with a delicious teriyaki sauce. We just had to order a plate of the Prawn Gyoza 118 fact magazine
ON THE MENU
Dumplings – a staple of the menu – lightly grilled and SO good with the Gyoza sauce. The sushi game at Nu Asia remains intact. That is to say – it’s very, very good! We opt for the Caterpillar Roll with unagi, crab, sliced avocado and unagi sauce. Fresh and light, the dish is excellent for vegetarian diners too. The Nu Asia Maki and Spider Rolls are a standout as well. Our star dish of the dinner was, hands down, the brand new Miso Salmon. A simple dish of Miso marinated baked salmon served with house salad. It’s the marinade that makes this dish. Super flavourful, melt-in-your-mouth salmon – we were impressed with every bite. Tip: try it with sticky rice! Another newbie that will please diners is the Thai Grilled Hammour with a lip-licking, tangy sauce. This dish goes really well with the Thai Vegetables Stir Fry. Innovation came in the form of the brand new Naan Pizza; a Nu Asia creation of naan topped with your favourite curries and cheese, then baked to a crispy edge and a soft centre. Finished with yogurt, coriander and crispy onions. How unbelievably tempting does that sound? Believe us when we say, it tasted just as yummy as we expected. This dish is perfect for sharing, with a light base and generous toppings! Other new menu items include the Thai Green Soup with Prawns or Chicken, Panko Chicken Salad, General Tso Chicken, Char Sui Beef, Rara Mutton Masala, Coriander Chicken Curry, and a whole host of new Indian Tandoori Grills such as Tandoori Chicken Legs, Saffron Hammour, and Black Pepper Chicken Tandoori – all of these are just some of the brand new flavours that you can experience at Nu Asia. Don’t forget to order your choice of mocktail – we LOVE the Moonlight and Melon-Pomegranate Mist – both are packing in freshness! Though Nu Asia was already bringing its A-game to the food scene, its new menu items have undoubtedly placed it well above its competitors in Bahrain. ✤ GO: Visit www.nuasia.net for information on the new menu and restaurant locations and timings. fact magazine

What maDE Ramadan a Special Time in Bahrain? We asked some of our top industry friends exactly what made Ramadan such a great time to be in Bahrain!
What are your three favourite things about the month of Ramadan in Bahrain? My three favourite things about Ramadan is that, one, all my family gathers every day at futoor time so we get to see everyone the whole month; the second thing would be my grandmother’s cooking; and the third thing would be seeing Ramadan festivities and the atmosphere in Bahrain which can be seen everywhere and every day.
Basma Alkhayer Audi, Marketing Manager
How have you most enjoyed the month of Ramadan this year? Inviting the whole family over for futoor everyday as it really makes the month different and more special.
Your favourite traditional food items to eat in Ramadan? Thareed and Gemat. want to be anywhere but at “home” - with Four Seasons attention and care.
Where did you spend most of your Iftar and Ramadan evenings? Last year was our first Ramadan tent experience here in Bahrain, although I was used to Ramadan from my Saudi Arabian days. This year our Ramadan tent was even more refined and provided a special place to enjoy both Iftar and Ghabga, so you would have found me most nights right here in our own Four Seasons Ramadan tent.
What is the best thing about spending Ramadan in Bahrain?
Greg Pirkle General Manager, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay 126 fact magazine
The warm and friendly Bahraini culture year round makes this an enjoyable place to live and work. During Ramadan, it is just as fun to be here and break fast with our good friends over Iftar and then enjoying a nice evening Ghabga with local Arabian music. Why would anyone
What you enjoyed most about this Ramadan in Bahrain... Enjoying the company of good friends and family during this time. Ramadan should be a time to also be thankful for what we have and to share our good fortune with those less fortunate. We shared our Ramadan tent with several groups this season as we did last year for our CSR partners.
INSIGHT
What are your favourite things about the month of Ramadan in Bahrain? Definitely the family spirit and how the community comes together; it is so unique to this part of the world and in Bahrain, being such a small place one feels this unity even more; and this is especially true for expats. You get invited to peoples’ homes to spend time with local families, and it really allows you to embrace the spirit of Ramadan and discover new things about the local culture and traditions. It is definitely worth experiencing the Holy Month in Bahrain, the entire country comes together, everything comes to life and the feeling is mesmerising.
Where have you spent most of your Iftar and Ramadan evenings? I have enjoyed the Iftars and Ghabgas we planned at ART Rotana, we have a great set-up and ambience which is extremely popular. I also visited other hotels, as this is a time when the industry comes together to celebrate. We don’t get much of a chance to mingle during the year due to busy schedules, but Ramadan is different, everyone makes an effort.
Have you got any tips for enjoying the month of Ramadan to its fullest?
Patrice Cornee Resident Manager, ART Rotana Amwaj Island
I am relatively new to the island; just coming up to two years and this will be my second Ramadan in Bahrain. It is worth taking a stroll in the Muharraq and Manama souqs, there is a buzz in the air as people move about, to and from each others’ houses to celebrate in the evenings. The traditions are beautiful to see, especially Gargaoun when the children are all dressed up and they dance and exchange gifts. And the evening ghabgas in hotels are a must-do – from the decorations to the traditional foods, the atmosphere and the entertainment, Ramadan is a magical season.
What are your favourite things about the month of Ramadan in Bahrain? My favourite thing about Ramadan is the atmosphere. I enjoy the various gatherings and ghabgas that happen throughout the month. Feeling closer to family as I always have Iftar with them and help cook meals, especially my favourite which is making dessert.
In what ways did you celebrate Ramadan this year? The best thing was to minimise distractions, and try to foster mental clarity. Focus your thoughts on helping others, improving yourself and reading the Quran. Be gracious and charitable.
What are some of your favourite traditional food items to eat in Ramadan? To start off, my favourite appetiser would be cheese samboosa; the main dish would be Thareed and to end a meal it would be the yummiest dessert made by my Aunt which is L’gaimat.

Summer Chillin’
Holiday Time
Georgina Jennsen is the LADY behind the popular lifestyle blog, Blonde in Bahrain. Georgina loves all things beautiful and luxurious.
Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…
If you’re anything like me, the long hot days of summer will, a) see me waking up really early; b) heading back to bed for a nana-nap around midday, and c) trying to do as little as possible in the hours inbetween. It’s just too stinking hot. So to avoid these it’s-so-hot-you-can-fry-an-egg-on-thepavement type days, my advice is to enjoy a long, leisurely breakfast, before heading back home to chill (literally). And if this sounds like something that’d float your boat, here are a few of my favourite brekkie spots in Bahrain: Traditional - Saffron by Jena (the smaller one in Muharraq) really is your best bet here. Around BD6 buys you four different dishes plus sweet tea and bread, in the beautifully unique setting of ye olde Bahrain. Firm favourite - You can’t talk about breakfast without mentioning Cafe Lilou, and if you’re looking to kick off your day with a complete sugar rush, try the Banofee Pancakes. Trust me, they’re the bomb. Luxe - Richly upholstered sofas, monogrammed silverware, waitresses adorned in frilled Parisian uniforms - welcome to the gorgeous Gourmet Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton. My favourite place to enjoy a crispy homemade croissant and cup of gourmet coffee, while enjoying the stunning views. New(ish) kid on the block - If anyone ever tells you that you shouldn’t eat pizza for breakfast, send them straight to My Cafe in Adliya. One bite of the mouthwatering Mehyawa Pizza and they’ll know just how wrong they were. Xx ✤
Now that Ramadan is over it’s time to look forward to your summer holidays and showing off all the hard work you’ve put in over the winter months, but while on holiday this doesn’t mean you should let yourself go and let all that hard work go to waste. Try and partake in some activities; most hotels have a gym and if you don’t want to go to the gym there are other activities you can participate in such as swimming, horse riding, hiking, aqua-aerobics or even golf. You should also take this opportunity to eat healthy, especially if you’ve gone to the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, where you can eat fresh fish, fruit and vegetables in abundance. Quite a number of my clients go to Europe during the summer and as I write this I’m in London with cloudy skies and heavy rain coming down (I just love summertime in London), you can still be active. Just get your rain coat, put your boots on and open your umbrella and you’re all set to go walking, taking in the sites. Visit museums and cultural hotspots, or the fabulous restaurants where you can eat healthy - and as I’ve found, most will have a vegan menu or options. Remember, if you have a long-haul flight, get up and stretch, and walk around so you don’t get stiff and cramped. Have an amazing holiday, show off that summer body and enjoy the fun. ✤

PEP TALK: HEALTH
RBH HomeCare at your doorstep! Royal Bahrain Hospital’s (RBH) HomeCare service is rising in popularity amongst the people of Bahrain. In an exclusive interview with Dr. Sheriff Sahadulla, Executive Director at RBH, we get an insight into how Bahrain’s leading premium hospital is changing the face of healthcare services within the country.
Q: Where do see HomeCare going in the next 5 years? A: HomeCare is the future of healthcare and technology will be instrumental in exponential growth of HomeCare services. Already, home monitoring is becoming so widely accessible. Mobiles can accurately track your heart rate and blood pressure. Plenty of wearable devices are available which can track various vital signs. All these gadgets can be linked to Hospital Information Management systems. In many cases, you don’t even need to go to the hospital. Video chats with doctors may soon be a reality.
Q: HomeCare service is making a lot of buzz in Bahrain. What exactly is it? A: Royal Bahrain Hospital’s HomeCare services aim to bring world-class healthcare to the comfort of your home. We have a range of services carefully designed to suit a wide variety of patient needs and ease their access to quality healthcare. Q: The healthcare sector is undergoing a transformation in Bahrain; in such an evolving landscape how does HomeCare enhance the service factor within this sector? A: Healthcare in the Kingdom as well as in the region is transforming – mainly driven by changing consumer behaviours and needs. At one level, with increasing per capita incomes, affordability is increasing and hence, the need for convenience and high end customer service. At another level, the rapid increase in lifestyle diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, hypertension, etc, as well as an ageing population, has put close monitoring of health at the forefront. Hence, the healthcare needs of the community are expected to rise significantly. But, at the same time, they seek it to be more convenient for them. That’s the segment which is catered by our HomeCare services. Our idea is to expand the continuum of care for the patients beyond the hospital boundaries and into their homes. Q: What types of services that are on offer with HomeCare? A: We extend a lot of services to the patients’ home which include, but are not limited to, doctors’ home visits, nursing home visits,
laboratory sample collection, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, post pregnancy care and pharmacy delivery services, to name a few. Broadly, these services can be broken down into two categories. First, services for which the patient doesn’t need to come to the hospital – this includes blood sample collections, physiotherapy and many types of nursing services. And second, when patients are unable to come to hospital, because of being bedridden or having decreased mobility, but face acute illnesses and require treatment. That’s when our team of doctors and nurses can visit patients and ensure they get right treatment at right time. Another thing to note is that this is not Emergency care. We already have an Emergency unit in the hospital, backed by 24x7 Ambulance services.
Q: How do you see HomeCare contributing effectively towards the Bahraini community? A: We are proud to be offering these unique services to the Bahraini community – it is our duty and great pleasure to provide quality healthcare services to our patients who unfortunately cannot reach us physically or are seeking convenience. We will continue to be at the forefront in this space and innovate to offer the best and latest services to people of Bahrain. The elderly population can especially benefit from these services. Q: What kind promotions are available with HomeCare? A: We offer a wide variety of packages – customised to suit patient’s requirements. We are currently running a promotion on Physiotherapy home visits – you can get 5 sessions for BD80 only - valid until July 31, 2016. Call RBH on 3941 9238 for more information. fact magazine

committed to raising Bahrain’s image, as it is important to give back and participate in reviving our economy.
What do you like about spending summer in Bahrain? I personally enjoy the summer in Bahrain; it is the time of the year that I can slow down. The fact that Bahrain is empty during the summer makes me feel almost like Bahrain is all to myself. Those who spend the summer in Bahrain enjoy better service in restaurants and shops, and no traffic to get to the office which makes Bahrain
even more attractive than it already is. It is a great period for me to spend more time with the kids and the family. I love going out dining and catching up on my reading.
What are some of your goals for the near future? My goals in 2017 is to participate in making Bin Faqeeh more solidly rooted to its market leader position in the real estate industry. On the personal side, my objective is to steadily gain more recognition in my field with the constant challenge of keeping a balanced professional and personal life.
