Summer, I Sea You! “Every Summer Has Its Own Story” - Puji Eka Lestari

W

hen you’ve grown up in the North West of England, summer very quickly becomes the luxury that you love (that’s until it gets TOO hot and everyone in the house wants to sit in front of the fan). In the Gulf, however, summer means hot and humid days, when even walking to the car can be a sweat-inducing chore. So, naturally, many of us escape the heat to more pleasant climes. But, for those who choose to stay and live out the sunny days in Bahrain, there’s no need to fret, for summer brings with it many more leisurely opps than any other season. Not only have you got pool and beach days galore, nationwide events, activities and promotions are also stepped up to keep the crowds cool. Starting p21, read all about what Bahrain Summer Festival has planned for families to enjoy; and when you need some inspiration in the kitchen for your next summer soiree, pick one of the yummy Beat the Heat Recipes shared by top chefs to help you and your guests stay refreshed (p29). There’s nothing better than a long weekend spent indulging in one of the region’s top resorts, and this month’s Hotel Hotspot shines a spotlight on the picturesque Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah (p43). If you’re looking for a wardrobe overhaul, American Eagle Outfitters’ summer collection will tick the box in July’s Fashion Focus (p75). If you’re excited for what has long-been one of the most talked-about events in Bahrain’s annual calendar - the Red Bull BC One Bahrain Cyper - only the biggest b-boy competition ever - then turn to p57 for a little reminder of just how prominent the comp has become. Now that the food scene is operating as per normal times, you’ve got SO MANY great places to perch and tuck in. Our Culinary Spotlight is the one-of-a-king Nereus Bakery & Café, a recently-opened Greek eatery in Argan Village (p87). The fun is set to be limitless and I can’t think of a better time of the year during which you can make new memories and stories (not the insta kind – the REAL kind). So, drink those mocktails (or your choice of liquid concoction), spend lazy days by the pool, get all the tan lines you can and simply LIVE, LOVE and ENJOY summer 2017 in all its scorching glory!☺ Shabana Adam Editor-in-Chief shabana@fact-magazine.com

Chakra Massage Collection FALL INTO THE LAIDBACK SUMMER MOOD AT THE SPA IN THE GLORIOUS FOUR SEASONS HOTEL BAHRAIN BAY. JULY IS THE MONTH OF BALANCING THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL!

Based on the Ayurvedic principles of chakra or energy meridians in the body, the Chakra Massage Collection is a combination of specialised massage techniques, subtle energy work and acupressure points that aim to balance these chakras to promote a deeper sense of connection and well-being. Serenity Massage – 75 minutes | BD80 Muladhara, meaning “root place” is the first of the main seven chakras. It governs base instincts, mental stability and sensuality. A special technique called Ku Nye is used during this treatment – a Tibetan style massage that concentrate on the energy meridians, muscular ache and lower back tension to help ground energy within the core roots. Peaceful Massage – 75 minutes | BD80 This nurturing massage focuses on Swadisthana, the sacral chakra located in the lower abdomen. Associated with emotional

balance, desire, self-worth and creativity. Using long fluid strokes, gentle acupressure techniques and flowing massage. Balancing this Chakra helps in letting go and finding a balanced healthy life. Vitality Massage – 75 minutes | BD80 The navel chakra located in the solar plexus targets the Manipura. This chakra is the center of health and vitality and governs the capacity to grow and develop. Manipura means beautiful shining jewel in Sanskrit and is governed by the element of fire. When it’s open and balanced, it helps shine from within. The full body massage uses warmed Himalayan salt poultices and incorporates a specific technique focusing on marma points and the energy flow of the body to restore vitality, inner radiance and positive feelings. Awakening Massage – 75 minutes | BD80 This restorative full back massage focuses on Kundalini – a female goddess of awareness in the form of a coiled snake - a dormant energy in the base of the spine which when awakened travels up to the spine and to the third eye promoting increased energy and enlightenment. Deeply relaxing and soothing, the back massage techniques in combination with warmed Himalayan salt poultices and a scalp massage helps in releasing physical tension and stress, balancing the nervous system to stimulate clarity. ✤ GO: Call 1711 5000 for reservations and more information.

WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT

The brilliant white exterior of the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah gives little away, yet the lobby of this 319-room property marks a great introduction to the very nature of the brand. Natural tones embrace guests as they make their way beneath dazzling light fittings and across plush rugs to the reception, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide remarkable views out to the sea. Waldorf’s inaugural property in New York was seen as the world’s greatest hotel at the time of its construction and has left a lasting legacy for the brand to measure the standard of others. Over a century later, this quality and consistency remain in place, with the check-in process undertaken with startling efficiency. A central clock is a fixture of Waldorf lobbies worldwide and the presence of a timepiece in the Dubai property takes prominence over a sweeping staircase of gleaming marble, leading out towards the beach. REFINED LIVING We get a feeling of desert chic as we traverse the communal corridors leading to the rooms, for the desert has quite literally been brought indoors. Sand and palm trees fill the corridors, leaving little doubt of our Arabian location. Our first-floor room is spacious and offers glorious views of the Dubai skyline over the flat waters of the Arabian Gulf. The iconic Burj Al Arab stands strong on the horizon, as the sunlight refracts off the Burj Khalifa in the distance. Our two-queen bed Deluxe Room is without a doubt one of the nicest we’ve stayed in. Awash with tones of ivory, beige and hints of turquoise, it’s tastefully decorated and features all the modern comforts you’d expect from a brand such as the Waldorf. A large 42inch HD television, a media hub for all your devices and an espresso maker (none of that

powdered stuff here) all add to the attention to detail which is astounding. Even the crockery is similar to something you would expect to find at a wedding. A specialr mention must be given to the signature Waldorf Astoria beds (complete with pillow menu) and what are easily the most comfortable slippers and robes in the Emirates - period! The bathroom continues the lavish feeling of the room, finished in marble and complete with double vanity units, a powerful rainfall shower (with seating ledge for those too lazy to stand) and a tub that features a television. It’s almost too difficult to leave the room when the levels of comfort are so high. HOLIDAY HAVEN The hotel’s location on The Palm Jumeirah means that it’s a little far from the tourist attractions of Dubai but it’s unlikely that guests will notice with so much on offer within the hotel’s manicured grounds. Amenities include the Waldorf Astoria Spa, featuring a sauna, steam-room, ice fountain, 12 treatment rooms and extensive hydrotherapy facilities. With over 50 treatments available in a serene and tranquil environment, it’s worth booking yourself in for some extensive pampering. Often, spas can feel a little clinical, but here, relaxation is at the forefront. For those with fitness in mind, the state-of-the-art gym is open 24-hours-a-day. Outside, amongst grassy lawns and rows of fragrant frangipani trees, is the private beach. A 200m swathe of golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see and leading down to tranquil azure waters that are shallow and ideal for young children and less competent swimmers. If relaxing on the sand isn’t your thing, the onsite water sports centre offers snorkelling, kayaking and water skiing, against the backdrop of the Palm’s residential fronds and the towers of Dubai Marina. Tennis courts and two temperature-controlled swimming pools are also available for guests. The lagoon-like family pool would be our choice, offering different depths of water and spacious cabanas, including some that are well-placed over the water for a special dining experience. An adults-only pool is provided for those looking for additional peace and quiet and even in the intense summer heat, the attentive lifeguards are on hand with bags of chilled water and ample shade to ensure comfort is maintained for all guests poolside. fact magazine

WEEKEND SPOTLIGHT

FOOD GOALS Six distinct dining destinations are available to take you on a worldwide culinary journey. Having heard wonderful things about Social by 3-star Michelin Chef Heinz Beck we were a little disappointed to find the restaurant closed for Ramadan. However, things were quickly redeemed with a dinner reservation at Lao. With so few Vietnamese fine-dining restaurants in the Emirates, it’s a refreshing choice of cuisine for the Waldorf and one that certainly pays off. Indulging in a set menu of Lao’s signature dishes, we’re taken on a sensory epicurean adventure from the coastal waters of Vietnam’s Halong Bay to the mountainous rice terraces of Sapa. With Vietnamese cuisine renowned for its aromatic flavours, these are evident in every dish throughout the meal. From the tender beef wrapped in a King Henry leaf and served with peanut and tamarind sauces, to the stir-fried chicken breast with aromatic lemongrass – every dish is as tasty as the next. Breakfast at Mezzerie offers guests a vast spread of freshly baked breads and pastries, artisanal yoghurts, dim sum, a gluten free corner and not one but TWO varieties of pancakes. It’s one of the most expansive breakfast buffets we’ve encountered with a focus on quality to match. The Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah is a property that offers sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Dubai. The location is perfectly suited to a distinguished brand that exudes luxury and exclusivity. Set amidst tranquil gardens and the gently lapping waves of the Arabian Gulf, it’s a property that is instantly memorable for its quality of service and pristine accommodation. With personalised and professional service to match, a staycation-worthy resort like this is where you should be spending your summer weekends! ✤ GO: Call +971 4 818 2222 or visit waldorfastoria3.hilton.com for reservations and more information. 46

HOTEL HOTSPOT

Considering that we’re in a part of the world where five-star means the utmost luxury, a brand like the Four Seasons fits right in. High expectations, attention to detail and a sense of local is what this hospitality giant is out to achieve. And we can now attest that it does just that! The Four Seasons Hotel Doha is completely unique in comparison to other top hotels in the Qatari capital. Located in the most perfect place – both close to the heart of West Bay and the ample things to see and do along the Corniche and neighbouring areas, it’s no wonder that both business and leisure travellers use it as a base from which to conduct work as well as explore Doha. We check in to the incredible Ambassador Suite to indulge in tourist-cum-trade life (hoping to attend some meetings during the trip and get some much-needed relaxation time in, too).

SUITE LOVE Walking into the Ambassador Suite is like finding your perfect home on the first viewing. It’s big, bright, spacious and has ALL the luxuries that you’d expect from a room type of this prominence. The hotel describes the suite as “a balance of privacy and luxury” and that couldn’t be more accurate. Open up the doors to the two step-out balconies (one off the living room and the other in the bedroom) whilst you’re going about your holiday. Sprawl across the mega-comfy king bed and catch up on emails whilst admiring serene views of the Arabian Gulf, all from the comfort of the fluffy duvet. For more blissful moments, make yourself an espresso – or other beverage of choice – from the private bar and sip on a warm cuppa as you take in the homely vibes of this amazing suite.

It was the blend of practicality, space and comfort that really had us in awe every time we’d gone out and come back to our little sanctuary. There’s space for EVERYTHING. Literally, bring as many suitcases full of clothes, shoes and accessories as you want because this place has some seriously good storage! The French Empire-style furniture is utter elegance, further enhanced by the Marte chandelier in bronze fusion with 24-karat gold plating (yes, you heard right!). There’s a dining table with cushy sofa-style seating and a lovely desk area for those who prefer to keep work life and sleep time separate. The marble bathroom is a whole different ball game. A deepsoaking tub is all the insta-worthy goals you’ll need, alongside the double vanity and the standalone shower, which was refreshing every time! Luxury amenities add to the already wonderful service. For those who are into their music and entertainment, there’s a DVD/CD player, iPod docking station, flat screen TV with a number of channels, and you can even get game consoles on request. So, tell us, why would you even want to leave the suite life? We certainly didn’t!

FOOD ENVY You shouldn’t be surprised to hear that we almost immediately fell in love with the dining venues at Four Seasons Hotel Doha. After all, most of them are highly-acclaimed and award-winning, and our high standards were met from the get-go. Breakfast in Elements was a sensory affair; eat every type of egg concoction, delve into dim sum, gorge on pastries and pancakes galore, go for healthy cereals, fruit juices and SO MANY more yummy treats. fact magazine

The REAL life-changing food experience, however, came in the evening at the one and only Nobu Doha. It’s the largest Nobu restaurant in the world; the brainchild of celebrity Chef Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa, serving up his signature new-style Japanese cuisine. Start your evening at the beautiful bar where every liquid potion is a blend of flavour and skill unlike anything you’ve tasted before. In the cooler climes, the stunning rooftop lounge is ideal for after-work and weekend catch-ups, whilst the main dining room is a breath-taking centrepiece of lively chatter, excellent food and on-point service. In total, there are seven stylish entertaining spaces, and you’ll get the best glittering views of the West Bay skyline from most of them – SO MANY selfie opps! Some of the standouts included the Spicy Tuna from the Nobu Bites menu; Beef Tenderloin with Dry Miso and Salmon Spicy Ponzu from the Cold Dishes; Mixed Seafood Ceviche; King Crab with Tomato Salsa Tacos; the signature Black Cod Yuzu Miso from the Hot Dishes; Rock Shrimp Tempura and a pretty much every single Sushi Roll on the menu. If your inner foodie was sleeping a while, this exquisite fare at Nobu Doha will awaken them, SO fast. Service at the restaurant was one of the best we’ve ever experienced, in any restaurant – and we’ve been to our fair share of classy fine-dining joints. Even though it’s an upscale place, the atmosphere is super friendly and welcoming, with staff being completely knowledgeable on food and drinks. No sign of stuffiness here!

LEISURELY LIFE We can testify that the Four Seasons Hotel Doha is the only place we’ve ever stayed at that has motivated us to get up and go to the gym every day of our trip. Why? Because the fitness facility is out INSANE! INDUSTRY Q&A

Hi Pasquale, welcome to the country! How are you finding the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain so far?

In terms of the property, you can say that this Mövenpick is positioned as a boutique resort, airport hotel. You have the resort feeling with the gardens and the pool and the spa, but you are also next to the airport so it ticks many boxes. It’s an extremely well kept property and you don’t have a feeling of being in an older hotel. The material is nice because it’s marble, and marble doesn’t age – it’s a very nice hotel.

The hospitality market has been going through a challenging time in terms of occupancy. What are your strategies to tackle this?

am I? Well, I like a working environment where people do their jobs and meet the expectations and I also believe that in the end, it’s not the quantity of time that you work, but it’s the quality. You can be in the office all day and achieve very little or you can come and be in the office half day and deliver more than what is expected. I like to be around, I go to the staff canteen when they’re having breakfast. I like to walk through the corridors, we have a lot of information for staff so I like to read up on this and keep them updated and making sure that the staff themselves can deliver accurate, up-to-date information. At the end – you have to be close to the people.

We’re all facing problems and no matter how well you’re doing, you’re never doing good enough. I believe the hotel here is a bit privileged, meaning, for example, if you have a 300 rooms then you really need a lot of different segments to keep up the occupancy. In our case, the hotel is 106 rooms so it is not a size where you would normally have a problem to get a healthy occupancy. We also manage to keep the rates reasonable, so the focus at our hotel is to maintain the quality to justify for the people who pay a premium rate to stay with us that they are making the right choice. It’s more about keeping up the quality of service and nice atmosphere so that people get a good return and value for their money.

You’ve been with the Mövenpick for four years now. What has kept you loyal to this hospitality brand?

What kind of approach do you take to the role of General Manager? Are you a more stay behind the desk type or walk around the hotel type?

What are your biggest day-to-day challenges as a General Manager in the Gulf?

I try to have a balance (laughs). At the end of the day, the reality is that we do have a lot of administration work, especially being new to the hotel. In my case, I’m still in the absorbing information stage. Normally, my typical day when I come down starts with going to the back of the house, the front office to meet the people and see the reservations, and then the different department offices. Then I do some admin work before going back out and doing the rounds around the middle of the day. But what kind of General Manager

What I like about the brand is that it’s not too small and it’s not too big either. It’s not 5000 hotels where in the end you might end up being just a P&L report for your boss. The Mövenpick brand is still a size where you can have a human relationship with the people around you. Especially now because of consolidation; more and more companies are becoming giants, and then you end up whereby your email is not a name but just a number. It can also be a little challenging in terms of opportunities and resources, but it’s a family atmosphere here, focused on quality, the guest and people – a healthy balance.

Having worked in Europe, I believe in the Middle East, in my opinion, we are still privileged. We can still have people around us in positions that you couldn’t have in Europe, for the simple reason that the cost would be too high. We have in our hotel 180 employees, which makes it almost two employees per room. I would say that in an average European capital, probably the ratio is 0.70 – not even one employee – per room. So, of course, in terms of the service and the guest experience that you can deliver, there’s a big difference. The reality is that we can keep up a high

standard because it’s still financially sustainable, but it is definitely related to the expectations of the guests in this part of the world too. A typical businessman in Europe doesn't want a bellman to carry his luggage because they normally travel for a couple of days with hand luggage, but here that is a basic guest expectation. I don’t think we have less or more challenges here, we just have different challenges.

On the other hand, what are the biggest rewards of your position?

As a General Manager I find that one of the biggest rewards is that you can still deliver high quality service and good hospitality, and be close to the people because you have enough time to dedicate to the guest, which is the key to our job. Personally, you get to live in a place with a nice climate – generally speaking – the warmth and welcome of the people who are very friendly in this part of the world – everything is quality.

Tell us some of the important things that you’ll be working to improve or build on at the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain for the rest of the year? I want to get to know the people who are working with me and meet the regular guests who come in – I believe in this size of hotel they should know the General Manager. The biggest project will be to finalise the renovation plans which are ongoing – the restaurants, the rooms and the public areas. This is really the main focus. The hotel is running very well, it’s a successful property; it’s very professional so I think it would be a bit arrogant to say “I came here and this is what I’m going to do until the end of the year” – first of all, I haven’t been here long enough to have a full picture. If I see something that can be done differently, not necessarily because it wasn’t done properly – but we all have our own point of view or you want to contribute – then I will do it. But, as we speak the focus will be to finalise the renovation project so that we can proceed with it in early 2018 or even earlier. ✤ GO: Call 1746 0000 for more information. fact magazine

The next year saw a complete shift in gears, with many leading B-Boys stepping out and many newcomers stepping in. BIG SCREEN Spider-Man: Homecoming

Highlights

What’s it about:

What’s it about? After a thrilling experience with the Avengers, a young Peter Parker returns to live with his Aunt May. Under the guidance of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man while trying to balance his ordinary high school life in Queens. His powers are soon put to test as a new villain in town, the Vulture.

DIRECTOR: Jon Watts CAST: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Calling all superhero junkies - drop everything and grab some popcorn as everyone’s favourite web-wielding man is back in action! Spiderman is all set to take centre stage and give the former Spider-men a run for their money. With Marvel taking over the franchise, there are bound to be some refreshing new changes. Thankfully for us, the plot doesn’t dwell on the origin story of Spider-Man and skips that part entirely. We witness Tom Holland as a young Peter Parker trying to make sense of his new identity and juggle regular high school drama while keeping his Spidey identity on the down low. The fresh faced Holland is the invigorating force this franchise needed and we’re certainly not complaining! Unlike its predecessors, the film focuses more on the man behind the mask and seamlessly blends the concept of a coming-of-age comedy with all the makings of a superhero blockbuster. With Robert Downey Jr. as Parker’s mentor along with a much younger Aunt May - there are less clichés. But can it live up to its comic legacy?

Lady Macbeth

“ Unlike its predecessors, the film focuses more on the man behind the mask and seamlessly blends the concept of a coming-of-age comedy with all the makings of a superhero blockbuster.”

Trapped in a loveless marriage with a man twice her age, Katherine is forced to adhere to a strict schedule and is prohibited from leaving the house. With her husband and his father away for work, Catherine starts a steamy affair with Sebastian. What follows is a twisted tale of love and gore.

– Spider-Man Homecoming

DIRECTOR: William Oldroyd CAST: Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? A stunning narrative of race, abuse, violence and class against the backdrop of Victorian aristocracy - Lady Macbeth is a dark and intriguing story of uninhibited love and callous cover-ups. An adaption of Nikolai Leskov’s novella, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, the film exhibits a Victorian noir air with increasingly feminist undertones. Katherine, a strong and willful young woman is married off to an older man, they’re sent to live in a grand but remote manor. Bored and alone, the stifling hold of the house encourages her to engage in a passionate affair with the young and brooding Sebastian. What follows will put every horror movie to shame! Florence Pugh is absolutely remarkable in her debut role as Katherine and truly makes the film her own. An intoxicating plot and climax!

ELECTRO/POP ALT/POP-ROCK

Evolve

By Imagine Dragons

Socially conscious lyrics and some purely dope music - Imagine Dragons’ newest offering is the album we all need and deserve! The Las Vegas band’s third LP, Evolve is here and ready to take the music world by storm. The album certainly displays a sonic shift and is much more scaled down than their previous works, but just as grand! Believer, a quickpaced track with a dash of hip-hop is quite possibly one of the best tracks on the album. The single floods with blues rock and grunge influences but still maintains the signature style of synth-heavy rock. Thunder, a track about not conforming to societal norms is oozing with energy and enthusiasm. The soothing style of the impactful single is sure to win the hearts of many! The Nevada natives take a more pop-rap approach for Whatever It Takes - further expanding their list of genre influences. Evolve certainly takes the band’s musical repertoire to a whole new level, adding to their already incredible legacy. We are totally on board this music train!

Something to Tell You

As the weather gets warmer, invite your loved ones over and cook up a storm with Mary Kay Andrews’ The Beach House Cookbook! By HAIM

Fans looking for a much needed HAIM fix can finally rejoice as the sisters are finally gracing us with their long-awaited musical comeback! After a four-year-long hiatus, the trio brings us Something to Tell You and it’s LIT! The album is the perfect blend of classic songwriting with a modern and exciting twist, a true testament of their sincere, enthusiastic selves. Carrying a summery 90’s pop vibe, Want You Back is a contrast of lyrics and productionwith the pop vibe transporting us back to the good old days! The album’s lyrics are a reflection of how their lives have changed in subtle ways and the soundtrack is much more organic than their previous work. Right Now, an understated and melodic track has all the makings of a HAIM song. The track may not be a summer hit but it certainly shows a more mature and calmer side of the band that we haven’t seen before- they totally get our kudos for that! Here’s hoping the sisters continue to amaze us with their musical genius. Final verdict: the wait was worth it!

FAMILY/DRAMA

The People We Hate at the Wedding By Grant Ginder

Alice and Paul’s half-sister Eloise is getting married in London and they are so not looking forward to it! Eloise, the product of their mother’s first marriage to a Frenchman, is as perfect as they come. Raised in the lap of luxury, she is nothing like her half-siblings and to top it off, she’s infuriatingly nice. Ginder employs intelligent and insightful writing with a dash of snark to bring to life the power of family. He delves into the complicated ways we hate the ones we love the most in a bitingly funny yet incredibly tender novel!

THE NEW VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI

fact magazine

65

THE GOLF GTI FAMILY HAS BEEN BLESSED WITH A NEW MEMBER SURE TO CONTINUE ITS BELOVED LEGACY.

66

fact magazine

Originating as far back as 1937, Volkswagen is a well-established German automobile brand, who produce popular cars for the general public. Amongst their numerous offerings, the popularity of the VW Golf in current times stands out. The GTI has enjoyed a sought after status due to its great handling, turn of speed and general driving pleasure. We at FACT were excited to be offered the opportunity to test drive the new Volkswagen Golf GTI, Seeming as members of our staff had personally owned various members of the Golf range in the past, we were all keen to find out how far this great brand of motorcar has progressed. Starting with the exterior, we were please to notice the iconic shape of the GTI still stands strong, however, the design has become considerably sleeker and sportier in appearance over the years. The latest look includes a newly shaped, crisper front end with LED daytime

ISLAND RIDES

running lights. Slight modifications to the rear end add to the proud stature of this hatchback on the road, highlighted by the LED, dark red tail lamp assemblies. This little beauty holds the distinctive look we have come to love whilst showcasing improvements on the overall aesthetics and functionality of the design. 18” Milton Keynes tires are fitted as standard, adding to the sporty finish. Another great feature of the Golf GTI is its size. At a glance one can see how much easier it is to find parking and to maneuverer around busy city centres than sedans and 4x4’s. Upon opening and closing the vehicle’s doors, the solid feel of the car was apparent. For a smaller sized vehicle, it is not delicate in nature, instead one feels as if they are climbing inside a sturdy and well-built machine. The neat and classy layout of the interior is a pleasant sight to be greeted with and one can tell love

and effort were invested in its design and construction. The space on offer was surprising considering the car’s apparent size and five people could sit comfortable inside. The boot offered ample space for luggage, certainly enough to pick up an international traveller at the airport. Everything seemed to be placed with practicality in mind and improvements on previous models were obvious. Beside from the great trims and finishes to be found throughout the vehicle, we were most impressed by the new state-of-the art fitted systems. To begin, this model contains the Discover Pro infotainment system complete with gesture control. This is a first in the compact class vehicle segment. A 9.2” touchscreen in a buttonfree tablet style takes pride of place on the dashboard whilst a 12.3” Active Info Display replaces the conventional speedometer. We found the functionality of this system to be very user friendly.

“THIS LITTLE BEAUTY HOLDS THE DISTINCTIVE LOOK WE HAVE COME TO LOVE WHILE SHOWCASING IMPROVEMENTS ON THE OVERALL AESTHETICS AND FUNCTIONALITY OF THE DESIGN.”

ISLAND RIDES As much as we loved the look and feel of the car, the real joy of owning a GTI is in the performance on the road. The BlueMotion did not disappoint! The acceleration alone had us giggling from the word go. The power in this motorcar is extremely obvious. With a 2.0L, 230hp engine we could immediately tell this car does not want for speed. With a 6-speed DSG transmission, the shifting through gears seemed seamless. But with great power, one needs to have great handling and this GTI has so in abundance. Cornering was a breeze and we always felt in complete control throughout the exhilarating ride. Perhaps the most impressive aspects of this new Golf were the safety systems, which set the benchmark in its class. The BlueMotion enjoys a five star Euro NCAP safety rating thanks to its numerous innovative safety features. These include pedestrian monitoring of the Front Assist emergency breaking system, blind spot sensors with rear traffic alert, and a revised occupant system that closes all windows when sensing an imminent collision. All this helps to ensure you and your family always arrive safely at your destination. By the time we had to hand back the keys, we knew we had only scratched the surface of the joy on offer with the new Golf GTI and we can only hope to relive the experience in the near future. ✤ GO: Call Volkswagen Centre Bahrain on 1745 9977 or visit www.volkwagen-bahrain.com for more information.

Greek cuisine is all about balance”, says Chef Thanasis Roussos. “It’s all about measure and variety at the same time,” he adds. Hailing from the vibrant and colourful land of Greece, Chef Roussos has been in Bahrain for one year now, but he’s already shaking things up on the dining scene with his modern interpretation of traditional Greek flavours. As we entered the quaint and incredibly chic Nereus Bakery & Café, we’re instantly reminded of the beautiful shores of Greece with its stunning blue and white accents. Nestled in the popular Argan Village, Nereus is the perfect place to relax and unwind whilst indulging on seriously delectable dishes. The café serves an array of scrumptious breakfast-style food and freshly baked bread products all day long. It’s, hands down, every breakfast lovers’ paradise! With a no-fuss approach to authentic Greek cooking, Chef Roussos aims to inject Greece’s lively culture and ancient culinary masterpieces into Bahrain’s flourishing food market. If you’re looking for a wholesome meal with all the trappings of a dish well done - Nereus is where you should be headed. It was time to dig in and we certainly wasted no time! Our first dish was a plate straight out of Greece (literally) – Dakos – a Cretan classic, it’s a medley of fresh tomato, crumbled white cheese, oil and fresh herbs on a bed of special handmade Cretan rusks, with all the ingredients specially sourced

from Greece. The traditional mezze was a beautiful explosion of contrasting flavours and textures with the tanginess of the tomato complimenting the creamy cheese, just perfectly. An incredibly light yet hearty dish for anytime of the day! For Chef Roussos, food is so much more than just nutrition. It’s knowledge, an effective way of knowing everything about a culture and its people. The dishes are meant to replicate exactly what you’ll get in any Greek household, both in flavour and presentation. Our next dish represented just that; a yummy Omelette. This morning delicacy is packed with beautiful French mushrooms and a variety of vegetables, taking this breakfast classic to an insanely tasty level. The omelette is fluffy and the filling of French mushrooms add juicy little bursts of sweetness to the mix. Ideal for not just breaky, but any time of the day! Out came the humble-looking Tahina with Thyme Honey on freshly baked bread – it certainly stole our inner foodies’ hearts! The divine combination

of honey and sesame paste is super delicate yet incredibly addictive – one won’t be enough – in fact, you might not want to share! The beloved honey made its way into our next dish too; Honey Cheese with Sweet Mushrooms, Strawberry and Pomegranate Marmalades. Need we say more?! The unique blend of the honey cheese with the fruity sauces is downright UH-MAZING. We were instantly transported to cheese heaven! Next up is Rice Pudding with Caramelised Crust, guaranteed to tingle everybody’s sweet tooth. The homely and comforting pudding consists of rice simmered in sweet milk, infused with vanilla bean and topped with a caramelised sugar crust. BABIES, TODDLERS AND SCREEN TIME… A SIGHT THAT’S BECOMING ALL TOO FREQUENT – TODDLERS GLUED TO IPADS AND OTHER DEVICES FOR ENTERTAINMENT. IS THIS HEALTHY FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES? BAHRAIN-BASED MAMA OF ONE ALLY MAC IS A CERTIFIED NUTRITIONIST, RAISING HER BABY GIRL BELLA ON OUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND. HERE, SHE EXPLORES THE ISSUE OF TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME AND HOW THIS COULD AFFECT THE DIET AND WELLBEING OF YOUNG CHILDREN.

T

oday, on average, little people spend five to six hours a day staring at screens. And they’re often on two or more screens at once, for example watching TV while playing on an iPad and because technology moves so incredibly fast, these little people have embraced it so quickly, it’s been difficult for parents to control it. This is where excessive screen time can lead to obesity; sleep disorders aggression and academic under-achievement. Sadly, we’re seeing the rise of the ‘techno-tot’ for whom iPads have become the modernday equivalent of a comfort blanket. I noticed my little lady Bella eyeing up my mobile phone from three-months-old. I kept screens away from her as much as possible but like most mamas that do at least five jobs at once, the TV/screen can be a saviour at times like preparing the milk bottle, brushing your hair (oh, what a luxury) and remembering to eat! I’ve seen many tiny children barely able to toddle yet expertly swiping an iPad or a phone. I ‘ve made a new rule and it’s a personal rule after researching a LOT into screen time for young kids. It’s not healthy for development and I will discourage screen time until after Bella turns two-years-old. If I think about my childhood, a lot of these things didn’t exist. It was all about beach or park time. Obviously, my parents didn’t have to think about what the exposure of screens might do to me. Babies are born with an intense desire to learn about their world, so they’re highly motivated

to interact with people and objects around them. That’s why they love it when we play silly games with them, such as peekaboo, or Bella’s current favourite; a wooden spoon and tin! Musical bliss? Maybe not. This is what helps babies develop physical co-ordination and social skills. When little ones can get instant rewards from high-tech devices, they don’t need to bother with real play. Images on a screen can be just as fascinating as the real world, and even babies can learn to control the images with a clumsy swish of chubby fingers. If the neural pathways that control social and imaginative responses aren’t developed in early childhood, it’s difficult to revive them later. A whole generation could grow up without the mental ability to create their own fun, devise their own games and enjoy real friendships all because of endless screen time. REAL play is a biological necessity. A psychologist told me it was ‘as vital for healthy development as food or sleep’ The earlier children are hooked on screens, the more difficult it is to wean them off. Don’t park your children in front of screens and expect them to develop a long attention span. Aim for a balanced approach for you and your baby. We need to help build healthy bodies and healthy brains! ✤ GO: For more tips, tricks and healthy recipes for your baby, keep up with Ally on instagram @allyskitchenstories and online at www.allyskitchenstories.com. fact magazine

Read The Labels

It’s Getting Hot Out Here

YVONNE COLE IS A PERSONAL TRAINER AND BELIEVES THAT WHEN YOU EAT CLEAN, TRAIN HARD AND TRUST THE PROCESS, YOUR CONSISTENCY AND PATIENCE PAYS OFF.

A NEW CLIENT RECENTLY asked me what I think of artificial sweeteners because her mother was using them, as they have zero calories. Her mother just so happened to walk into the kitchen at the time so I told both of them that the brand she was using was once on the market before but under another name but because of the side effects they changed the name and put it back on the market and gave her the name of a few more natural sweeteners out there. What you need to remember is food manufactures are not your friend and they don’t have your best interest at heart. There are foods that you think are healthy but they aren’t and may in fact make it harder for you to lose weight; which is why you must read the labels. What you need to remember is healthy foods don’t come with labels and a list as long as your arm full of ingredients. So whenever you see any of these words step away from the product and run; Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Fructose, Ethyl Malitol, Fruit Juice Concentrate and anything else that’s a name for sugar. So, be careful of anything that says Organic, Fat Free, All Natural or Healthy as manufactures know these words will attract your attention. It’s time to become a smart consumer and start taking a little more time to read the back of the product. ✤

YES SIR, IT’S HOT OUT THERE. And like it or not it’s only going to get more un-comfy as we slide our sweaty bods into the peak of summer, thanks to the heightened humidity. If you’re one of the unlucky bunnies left behind in Bahrain over summer, here are a few tips to help you deal with that nasty summer heat. Hydrate as though your life depends on it (which it actually does). I find the easiest way to do this is to take a big ol’ bottle of water with you in the car, and make sure you finish it before you reach your destination. Make it a habit and you’ll increase your water intake significantly without even really trying. Ice ice baby. There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a great big drink of something icy cold. So you know that aforementioned big ol’ bottle of water you’ll be carrying around in your car? Pop it in the freezer first and feel your body temperature quickly cool. Schedule a siesta. This one’s a bit harder to do if you’re working for the man, but is at times the only way to get through a long hot July day in Bahrain. Try to use the cooler morning and evening times to do anything that needs to be done, and make sure that you’re safely tucked away under an a/c when the midday heat peaks. It’ll make your day just so much more bearable. Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen! ✤

Summer is Calling

Reactions to Tantrums

AANCHAL DUGGAL IS AN AVID BIBLIOPHILE AND FASHION ENTHUSIAST TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING OUT OF DOING WHAT SHE LOVES. AANCHAL IS NEW TO BAHRAIN & EXPLORING!

MARIETTE CARSTENS IS A HOLISTIC BEHAVIOUR THERAPIST AND NATURAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER WHO APPLIES A CONSCIOUS, EMPOWERING PARENTING MODEL TO GUIDE FAMILIES.

AS THE WEATHER GETS warmer and the days get longer, most people will be packing up their bags and embarking on their summer escapes. But if you’re like me and don’t have a destination to conquer this summer, there’s still tons to look forward to. This being my very first summer in Bahrain, the prospect of facing a massive heat wave did sound a bit daunting at first, but Delhi’s equally humid ways have certainly prepared me well! If you can get past the heat, there’s a lot more fun to be had. While the Middle East is synonymous with scorching hot temperatures, Bahrain goes above and beyond to make your summers memorable and eventful. Something that I really have my sights set on is the annual Bahrain Summer Festival - a month-long events programme showcasing exceptional local and international talent! If you’re anything like me and are on the road to understanding Bahraini culture a little bit better, the festival’s traditional musical and dance performances are something you shouldn’t miss. While there’s no denying that summer on the island is bound to get a bit oppressive at times, barbeques with your loved ones and evening strolls in leafy areas do make it a whole lot better - plus the lack of traffic doesn’t hurt either! So slather on some sunscreen, get those shades on and don’t be afraid to experience the warmer weather in all its glory! ✤

IN THE HEAT of the moment, we often get triggered when our children throw tantrums. When our buttons get pushed we may even feel under attack ourselves in these intensely reactive moments. Once you become consciously aware that you have been triggered into a reactive state, you must first acknowledge that you have stepped into the conscious parenting process. This first step is a vital shift in perception and awareness. It draws our focus away from the challenging behaviour patterns that manifest externally, and refocuses our attention on the internal process, where we have more control. It also allows us to identify the emotions that have been triggered within ourselves (embarrassment, anger, frustration, irritation, desperation or helplessness). With this deeper awareness you will find that it is easier to step out of the energetic role-play and the unconscious emotional reaction that is feeding back into destructive behaviour patterns. Now you are more empowered to choose the appropriate response and meet the challenge of the specific circumstance. It could be that the child is trying to meet a physical need (hunger, discomfort, tiredness, or the immediate gratification of a desire) or an energetic need (validation, attention, love and comfort). More importantly than meeting your child’s needs in this moment, is honouring the sacred process and recognising the potential to dissolve the energetic patterns that are the deeper cause of challenging behaviour in our children and the reactive state it triggers in us as parents. In future columns we will explore this link between the child’s behaviour and the parent’s reaction. ✤
