Summer Daze

The summer night is like a perfection of thought.” - Wallace Stevens

M

aking a summer playlist is one of life’s simple highlights for me. Picking out the songs that are essentially going to be the anthems that you make new memories to whilst having fun in the sun, this is the most exciting part of getting ready for summer travel, visits home, lazy pool days with friends and leisurely gatherings. But, in Bahrain, summer can also mean other things - like trying to survive the scorching heat, running from one A/C spot to another and, most of all, choosing to do things that will stop you from melting in the sun. Not to mention the burning hot steering wheel and sauna-like car conditions. Fear not. As usual, the FACT team is on-hand to bring you the only Summer Survival guide you need for 2018. We’ve packed it with the island’s top brunches, lunches, dinners, and spa offers so you know exactly where to go to beat the heat with your loved ones. Turn to p25 and start jotting down all your favourite spots to check out over the next few months. Highly recommended is one of the many fabulous staycays where there’s plenty to while away the sluggish summer days. Talking of staycations, if you’re not jetting away too far then a quick summer escape to neighbouring UAE might just be what you need. Check out our recommendation for a home-away-from-home hotel that will make you feel like you went on a mini holiday. This month we shine the spotlight on the green wonder of Melia Desert Palm Dubai (p38) where city life fades away to be replaced by a realm of tranquility - you'll get the best of both world here! If you pick up FACT’s monthly issue for a fashion, beauty and interior’s fix, you’ll be happy to see that the summer survival edition has more for your wardrobe and makeup/grooming kits. To top this off, our tech pages have something for everyone to envy and we even got the exclusive with a couple of cool hospitality leaders - check out the Q&As with Bahrain's who's who throughout the issue! I think this summer I’m going old-school. It’s time for a throwback playlist of all the 90’s and early 00’s - and there’s too many good tunes waiting to be turned up! Wishing you all a bright and beautiful season ahead (and happy survival). Until next month, keep calm and get your summer on. ☺

FROM SILICON VALLEY TO BAHRAIN NARMO CAPITAL WLL HOSTED a unique event “Bringing the Silicon Valley ecosystem to the MENA region” at the Capital Club in the Bahrain Financial Harbour. Narmo Capital Founder & CEO Fahad AlOmran was the official host of the event, with guest speakers from Golden Gate Ventures (Singapore) including Vinnie Lauria (Founding Partner), Paul Bragiel (Co-Partner) Justin Hall (Principal) as well as Narmo Capital’s CIO Werner Braunock. In attendance were 35 distinguished individuals from finance, entrepreneurship, heads of telecoms, senior advisors, and high net worth individuals, family offices, bankers and press. Topics at panel discussions included the history of the Singapore Venture Capital (VC) ecosystem and what lessons can be learned that can be applied to the MENA region and other hot emerging VC markets. An important lesson was government support (either direct or indirect) towards furthering startups, as well as integrating industry, universities and government into a comprehensive VC strategy. Another hot topic was the more mature Silicon Valley ecosystem and how overcrowded the field is versus the underdeveloped/more promising emerging VC markets like the MENA region. Discussed was the rise of the “unicorns” and how some locally launched startups have proven to be a match for international competitors (Careem vs. Uber) or have actually beaten their international competitors (Didi and Grab vs. Uber). During the Q&A afterwards, the topic of startups staying private for longer (versus going public via an IPO) came up and how entrepreneurs value the longer-term focus and lower reporting requirements of the VC ecosystem. The event successfully closed out with a group picture and one-on-one meetings, as well as further networking. ✤

DON’T SWEAT IT HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN BE DOING TO KEEP COOL IN THE SCORCHING SUN...

WHAT TO EAT IN THE HEAT?

POPSICLE PARTY Though you might be tempted, stop yourself from reaching for that super-cold tub of ice cream in the freezer. A healthy and more delicious alternative is fruit popsicles – they’re just as cooling and contain half the calories.

TWO EASY & YUMMY POPSICLE RECIPES

Virgin Piña Colada Pops (Serves 8) Ingredients: 1/2 large pineapple, chopped (about 4 cups), One 15-ounce can cream of coconut Three tablespoons fresh lime juice, Pinch fine salt Method: Puree the pineapple, cream of coconut, lime juice, and salt in a blender until smooth. - Pour the mixture into 10 3-ounce or eight 4-ounce ice-pop molds, dividing evenly. Insert ice-pop sticks and freeze until firm, at least four hours and up to four days. Banana Nutella Fudgesicles (Serves 10) Ingredients: Six large overripe bananas, peeled 1/2 cup nutella Method: Blend the overripe bananas until completely pureed. - Add nutella, and blend until completely mixed in. - Pour into popsicle molds with sticks and freeze for three to four hours. 36

fact magazine

Fruit with Yogurt – As fruit has high water content, it will help maintain your body fluid, by making you sweat – this is the body’s method for cooling down in the heat. Yogurts contain friendly bacteria which can help protect against food poisoning – something that is more of a frequent occurrence in hot temperatures. Rice, Baked Potato & Pasta Salad – Eat regular, small, starch carbohydrate snacks or enjoy a weekend roast with ample potatoes or a pasta dinner, and how about a yummy risotto? Why? Well, carb-rich foods keep the body’s blood sugar and energy levels even, helping to combat heat exhaustion. Onions – Really? Especially red ones! Red onions contain a chemical called quercetin which is believed to have an antihistamine effect. So for those people who suffer from irritants like heat rash or bad reactions to insect bites and stings, eating onions daily could be the answer to these summer complaints. Eat Spicy Food – A vindaloo in the summer might sound crazy, but chillies and spicy curries can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, all of which cools the body down. Eat Small, Eat Often – The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates breaking down the food. Eat small portions but eat regularly!

HOT TIPS FOR COOLING DOWN ◆ Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every

couple of hours. A main vein passes through this area, and it helps cool the blood. ◆ Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Light colours reflect the sun’s radiation and heat is trapped by synthetic fibres, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation causes you to feel cooler. ◆ Replace your usual body moisturiser with a cooling aloe vera aftersun product to use morning and night. This will help lower your skin temperature. ◆ While you’re out, keep the house blinds or curtains drawn to stop it heating up like a greenhouse. ✤

DARK HORSE OF

HOSPITALITY

WE ALL GET TIRED OF ‘HORSING-AROUND’ IN THE MIND-FIELD THAT IS DUBAI, AMIDST ITS TOWERING BUILDINGS AND FASTPACED LIFESTYLE, AND SO CAME THE IDEA TO SOURCE OUT A TRANQUIL ESCAPE CLOSE BY. FACT TROTTED TO THE LUSCIOUS SERENITY OF THE MELIA DESERT PALM DUBAI AND WE CERTAINLY DIDN’T HAVE A LONG FACE DURING THIS STAY!

T

he Melia Desert Palm Dubai is set amidst an expansive estate with 160 acres of polo fields, tree lined lanes and secluded, shady nooks housing residences and villas. The sprawling Metropolis of Dubai with its array of entertainment and frenzied business and shopping districts is a mere 20 minutes away. When approaching the property, you’d imagine that those who designed each space and vista simply looked to the high rise cacophony of the city and said “Shhh! Serenity reigns here.” Remove words such as hustle, bustle, overwhelming, frenetic and anxiety from your vocabulary and replace them with lush, vegetation, tranquil, relaxing, leisurely and inviting - the language of Melia Desert Palm Dubai guests. WATCH ME NEIGH NEIGH Visitors are greeted by a beautiful wooden sculpture depicting a horse drinking from a watering hole. Inspired, you might assume, by the old adage ‘You can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’. This illustrates how closely each element of the estate is intrinsically linked to the equestrian stables and prestigious Dubai Polo Club. Guests can indulge their interests in both polo and riding as much or as little as they desire. The Club which was founded by Ali Albwardy in 1994 houses over 250 ponies during the course of the season which runs from October to April with practice chukkas being held on Thursdays and Saturdays within sight of the hotel’s terrace. In addition, the beautiful Spanish-style stables, draped in bougainvillea, accommodate private livery horses and riding school horses which hotel guests may use. Saddle up and meander across the vast expanses of lush greenery or down tree-lined lanes. A visit to the stables is a must even for those who aren’t horse enthusiasts. THE SUITE LIFE If the thought of all that exertion is simply too much for those wishing to unwind and indulge then the hotel itself has just the ticket! The accommodation on offer, comprising 38 luxurious rooms along with additional private villas and residences is understated sophistication. The colour scheme boasts a spectrum of creams and browns which remove any hint of sterility whilst retaining clean lines and a contemporary vibe. The Palm Suite - our inviting home for three nights - had a superb layout which flowed effortlessly from the relaxed seating areas adorned with complimentary beverages and fruit platter to the expansive sleeping area with king size bed and modern amenities through to the stunning eggshaped bathtub which was the centre piece of the wet-room-style bathroom. 38

WEEKEND ESCAPE •

Floor-to-ceiling windows afforded us views of the paddocks and polo pitches. This was not just a space in which to sleep and leave hurriedly but rather a space in which to spend time enjoying the facilities. RARE FOOD GOALS By the time dinner came around, the delirium we had experienced whilst in the city was no more and we moseyed from the room feeling like we didn’t have a care or worry in the world. Due to the location of the hotel it is less likely that guests would venture back into the city to dine, therefore, we were overjoyed to find that this had not created a sense of complacency at having a ‘captive’ audience as we perused the menu at RARE. The setting itself was one of ‘fire and iron’ (which the menu refers to) with industrial inspired pendants of light crafted into various shapes from opaque glass. Flames soared in the open grilling station and could be seen ferociously heating the ovens above them. Beyond the cooking stations dishes were swiftly delivered to our table by knowledgeable hosts. Some of the platters mimicked distressed steel trays whilst others were equally interesting shapes and colours whilst drinks were delivered in perfectly mismatched pewter tumblers or exquisite long stemmed saucers. This all added to the panache. The plenteous variety of salads, soups, ceviches and appetisers bamboozled me in the most wonderful way. As my eyes continued onwards into the entrees we quite literally rubbed our hands together with delight. What could possibly follow poached Veal Loin Carpaccio, Seared Diver Scallop, Peruvian Fish soup or indeed Seared Lobster tail? Ordinarily, we would try something slightly more experimental or adventurous such as their Braised Beef Cheeks accompanied with smoked vegetables or Pumpkin Gnocchi with sautéed Mango Spinach and Tomato Concasse. However, we were completely smitten by the splendorous selection of beef steaks and ribs which began with the ‘baby’ 40-Day Aged Prime US Grass Fed Beef through to the ‘Godfather, the patriarch of

the family’ 450-Day aged Wagyu Beef from Ranger’s Valley. If the flavour profile wasn’t already outrageous enough, diners can opt to add Foie Gras or Blue Cheese or one of seven sauces. In addition the 12-hour double cooked beef short ribs served with in-house barbeque sauce brought this carnivorous escapade to a crescendo. For those who prefer to opt for something more heart healthy or who have removed meat from their diet completely, RARE offers mouth-watering options such as Roasted Vegetable Ravioli and Baked Provolone with vegetable compote. We challenge anyone to visit RARE and leave feeling anything other than mind blown... and extremely satisfied. The resident chef is also available for those staying in villas and residences for bespoke private BBQs. AN EPIC FEAST Epicure – Gourmet, Gastronome, Gourmand. With breakfast being prepared in an establishment with such a title we had no doubt that quality would be guaranteed. The Epicurious Breakfast menu boasted 14 tea choices and Melia Desert Palm Dubai’s signature Arabica coffee blend as well as juices and homemade smoothies. Traditional Arabic breakfasts along with the best of the ‘Hen House’ or ‘Heart Healthy’ dishes once again provided something for everyone. For those with a big day ahead the ‘Big Breakfast’ would set you up to tackle anything. The menus have been skillfully crafted in order to ensure that even guests staying for weeks at a time need not grow tired of the dishes on offer and could probably eat something different every day of their stay. Brilliant! AND RELAX… Samana Spa was our final destination. Although we might suggest that the best was saved for last, that would be an injustice as my time at Melia Desert Palm Dubai was phenomenal from the moment I arrived. Nevertheless, the jewel in the crown is undoubtedly their spa and the treatments it offers. The healing qualities of crystals are renowned the world over and therefore Samana has sourced crystal-infused waters which each hold special properties. fact magazine

41

The crystals are displayed, suspended within the dispensers. An invigorating yet thoroughly relaxing one hour massage was concluded with time in the relaxation zone which boasts heated tiled loungers, beautifully ornate day beds and a selection of teas and preserved fruits including apricots and dates. Despite our best efforts to remain, our time here had ended and we grudgingly left to face the loud, brash, reality of the world outside. Melia Desert Palm Dubai is the epitome of a hidden gem. It’s the kind of secret you feel you want to share but are too afraid to because it’s just so wonderful. The proximity to the city means that it’s both a perfect getaway for residents or businessmen and a superb location for those hoping to discover the delights of Dubai by dipping in and out as they see fit. ✤

HOSPITALITY Q&A •

Mr. Mehdi With Sofitel Bahrain's Marketing Manager Mr. Ali Chachar

Congratulations on your new role as General Manager! The Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa is one of the most renowned properties in the country. What’s your vision for the hotel during your management? Being a property filled with great cultural links, it is our main vision to further enhance the Bahraini hospitality with our French service, in order to deliver an experience of "Magnifique" cultural fusion to all our guests. With the vast amount of recreational facilities and the only Thalassa Spa in the country and region, another one of my visions is to make Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa the most preferred family hotel, not only on weekends, but any day and time of the year. Our guest's satisfaction is our top priority; therefore, it is my goal to ensure that each guest receives a bespoke tailored service in line with our Sofitel Brand promise. You were previously Director of Operations at the hotel. What has kept you so loyal and dedicated to the Sofitel brand? Ever since I graduated from my hotel School in Switzerland, I aspired to be part of AccorHotels Group and have never regretted aiming for it. AccorHotels Group together with all its brands, including Sofitel, provides so many opportunities especially to young talents. In order to help their young talents grow, Accor has some amazing development tools like the Online Learning platform with e-Cornell for example.

Thanks to Sofitel and the Accor Group, I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in several countries across the globe, enabling me to discover the beauty and complexity of linking cultures through the hospitality industry. It is definitely a great brand to be dedicated to and work with. In such an important role of responsibility where things can be overwhelming at times, how do you manage your expectations and the need for attention to detail? In the hospitality industry, it is all about having a strong relationship with your team. With such vast responsibilities, it is very important to work as a team together towards achieving common goals. The significance of your empowerment as a leader to your team is essential in order for trust to be in place, and with this, challenges can be overcome successfully. It is your team, your ambassadors, that will make you stand out from other 5* properties in the country. The team work closely together on a daily basis in order to anticipate and surprise our guests with "Cousu Main" (tailor-made) services and a "Heartist" approach. Describe your working style - are you the type of GM who does things from his office, or do you prefer to walk around the hotel and be more hands-on and interactive with staff and guests? With an operational background in Food & Beverage, I tend to enjoy being on the move so as to be able to support my team and fact magazine

its outlets, are under constant pressure to innovate their services and products to create a must-visit family destination for the new generation. Recently, we opened the property’s Indian Restaurant- Rivaaj and launched new products in our Thalassa Sea & Spa. And right now, we are in the process of having some key renovation done in our Recreational Facility, such as the Kids Club, water games and the Beach Bar over this year and the coming year. You have been in the hospitality industry for a decade now, can you share with us three important lessons you’ve learned along the way that helped to prepare you for the role of GM? Well first and first most I would like to mention TRUST. If I am here today it is thanks to my superiors trusting me through my career. Trusting people gives people the confidence and the motivation to do well and therefore succeed. Trust your team and they will show you that they can do it and even exceed your expectations. Hospitality is all about meeting guests needs, providing them with a faultless servie. This can only be achieved by listening to your guests’ comments, observing your guests and speaking to your team in touch with the guests throughout their stay. There is never any bad or silly feedback, we value all comments negative and positive as they allow us to improve our service. Within the current hospitality market where innovation and guest's expectations are growing at a great speed, one can not be content with what they have achieved, but must always be looking how to improve, do better so as to stay on top of the market as a hotel and Brand. be in touch with the everyday operational running of the property. Though I make sure that things are well done in the office, I believe that meeting the guests and working hand-in-hand with the team helps me to understand better the expectations of all our guests and ambassadors across the property. Tell us some of the ways in which you keep morale and motivation high at the Sofitel Bahrain - what’s your approach to making sure that people are happy and on the same page every day? At the Sofitel Bahrain, we believe it is of up most importance to keep all of our ambassadors informed of all operational activities in line with our targets, in order to them to feel valued and understand our common goal. Transparency is key in helping the property reach its objectives by having each and every ambassador know their role and importance. We also make sure that every effort is recognised by hosting a monthly Success Party during which we rewards all our outstanding team members that we call “ ambassadors”. And to keep the whole Sofitel Bahrain family happy even outside work, various social activities are also regularly held such as BBQ Nights, Ambassadors Parties, Sports Events, and many more. As Managing Director of Rahim Holdings, describe for us your day-to-day role and the tasks involved in this position… So I'll just give you a brief about Rahim Holdings. Established in 2015 as a family investment office we now operate in multiple sectors; F&B, Real Estate, Marine and Yachting alongside Active Entertainment and Sports. We've signed a few franchises under the F&B - Coffee Republic from the UK, Francesco's from UAE and also Shakespeare and Co. and we are working on our own local concept but we're trying to make them as international standards. We have Co Lab and Freej as a local Bahraini concept. As a Managing Director within three years our company has grown 70+ staff which is quite challenging but my main role is to manage the day-to-day operations and new business development and new investments that come to the company You have some very exciting things in the pipeline. Can you share with us more information about the first ever drive thru element for Coffee Republic that you will be bringing to Zallaq Springs? What can people expect and why Zallaq Springs? When we signed Coffee Republic in 2015 we wanted to compete against the major three players of the coffee house/coffee shop industry in Bahrain, so, we established our flagship location in Riffa next to Royal University for Women. That location is 650 square metres which is the largest coffee house/shop in Bahrain. We've revolved that location around students. We have a quiet room for whomever wants to study, library screens and projectors and a meeting room for anyone who wants to do talks, workshops or

lectures etc. Our Zallaq Springs location has the mantra of health and wellbeing which isn't the typical retail location in Bahrain where your usual is one of a car parking area, whereas, you can enjoy a view of a zen garden with flamingos walking around here. We have very high windows. ceilings and spacious seating areas. The main feature that we are introducing in Coffee Republic beside the drive-thru - which will serve the community - is the cycling stations we've created where you would come indoors with your own bicycle and spin it with resistance and be able to drink your cup of coffee whilst watching a screen. It is the first time that a Bahraini coffee shop has this concept especially now that Zallaq Springs is creating 10 triathlon areas which supports the health and wellbeing focus. You are also bringing the first ever Shakespeare & Co branch to Bahrain. This whimsical eatery has grown really popular in the region – do you think it will have the same effect in Bahrain? I definitely think it will have a similar effect, if not more. Bahrain is a very unique f&b destination in the sense that it is very competitive and market trends change on a quarterly basis. Shakespeare & Co. fits the Bahraini demographic perfectly; from a price perspective, its truly charming atmosphere and the design itself is timeless alongside a wide menu variety. Also, it is situated in the unique location of Zallaq Springs which will certainly drive traffic there. Why Shakespeare & Co. in particular, what attracted you to say yes to bring this food concept to Bahrain? It is very difficult to choose an F&B franchise to bring to Bahrain. fact magazine

There are a lot of hip or trendy new concepts that you can bring but probably after six months that trend is fading away. Shakespeare has been a very well established brand in the UAE and around the region, I believe they have 39 locations in the UAE and 22 worldwide so it has already surpassed or survived the stress of time in terms of logistical growth within its own concept. The concept itself has a lot of unique offerings that a lot of other F&B outlets do not offer. Other than a very big menu as they serve shisha, decorative cakes and a big catering element alongside ready made chocolates available. It is a very well rounded concept I believe it can definitely compete in Bahrain as a smart casual concept. Rahim Holdings operates in the hospitality, real estate, and marine and yachting sectors – share with us some of the challenges you may deal with as a Managing Director and how do you overcome these? Staying relevant with new trends happening. There are a lot of local concepts trying to compete at an international level alongside a selection of already established franchises. You need to figure out how to 'zig' when everybody else is 'zagging' when it comes to marketing and remain relevant. The other component that I find very challenging is how cosmopolitan Bahrain is and how this effects recruitment. The restaurant team are one of the main components that make a concept successful, we have to always strive to recruit, train and manage our multinational team for each concept we operate 56

fact magazine

The company was formed based on three principles; vibrancy, creativity and innovative outlook – can you expand on this for us and tell us more about your vision? We try not to be that typical 'family office; so we tend to break from the norm. We have a very diverse veteran team of experiences staff and a very young, energetic and 'new blood' team here in our company to come up with creative approaches and new ideas to keep up with the market trends and the best acquisition for our products. We try to empower both sides as much as possible so that they come up with a new conceptual approach. Bahrain is an incredibly special place for its many communities; tell us your three favourite cultural hotspots in the country and why they are special to you… Usually people would mention certain f&b areas as their favourite cultural hotspots, but, for me it would be the two UNESCO World heritage site and Bahrain Fort which I feel are overlooked and also the Tree of Life. Bahrain Fort for instance has ample parking etc, but, it doesn't have all the services around it to support staying in that area for it to thrive to be a tourist hotspot. As the man at the top of a busy and fast-moving company, how do you stay motivated and passionate about your work? The pace of the company and employees depends on my pace so it is important for me to remain focused to ensure that everyone is motivated. I'm Bahraini and I want to benefit my country as much

as possible by employing Bahrainis and also bringing in new innovative concepts. When Rahim Holdings creates new brands with international standards then they can compete in a global market which makes me extremely proud as we are giving back to the community. Are there any unique elements that you’ll be adding to your locations at Zallaq Springs? In Coffee Republic we are offering the cycling element, the library and opening up a lot of communal areas for people to be able to be productive. We are not focused specifically on students in that location but we are offering elements that will appeal to them also. Shakespeare & Co. is very much the flagship location regarding its design as it will be the most updated in the region. Other areas are offering limited menus but we will produce an extended menu alongside opening up a selection of catering services including their bakery services at a later stage. For Coffee Republic we usually keep our locations very busy with events such as our Riffa premise with comedy nights, lectures and workshops - there is always something happening there and we're bringing this policy to Zallaq Springs. Highlight some of your future goals for Rahim Holdings over the next year. What’s your foresight for the company going ahead? We have a lot of new projects coming next year! They're all operating businesses we have the family of Air Cube which is an adventure park that we are looking to bring to Bahrain which would have trampoline park, rock-climbing, obstacle courses and a ninja-course etc . The first of its siblings would be Adventure Cube which will be in Wadi al Sail Mal in Riffa. It will offer rockclimbing, obstacle courses and caving within the unit in the mall, Air Cube is focused on active entertainment and instead of going to a typical arcade you can go here where it actually requires physical participation. The first element that we have opened is VR Cube which we recently opened at The Avenues - it is a virtual reality gaming centre and it also requires physical activity. There are two modes 'fight' or 'flight' that requires you to move the simulator with a series of different movements and is highly interactive - you should definitely try it! We have Ride Nation that will be Bahrain's first indoor cycling studio. We're creating a very high-end luxury service! Our consultant is from the US that has done the majority of 'Soul Cycle' and 'Fly Wheels' around the world. We're trying to create our own brand that fits Bahrain need but our goal is to be the leading cycling studio provider in the region. For Coffee Republic we are hoping to open Seef Mall within a month in addition to Zallaq Springs and sign a third location by the end of the year as well as opening up a second premise of Shakespeare & Co. Finally we have COLAB which is a new dual concept of a coworking space/cafe so it isn't your typical business centre or coffee shop but rather something in between. It is a very popular global trend for freelancers to allow for a flexible and adaptable working space that everyone can benefit from with additional facilities. ✤ fact magazine

W

e at Fact Magazine would never complain about test driving quality motor vehicles for a living. However, it is always a welcome surprise to be presented with something different for us to put through its paces. This month, the generous people at Al Haddad Motors provided us with just that, a Mercedes-Benz experience with a difference. Being an avid road trip enthusiast, the appeal of the V-Class was instantly apparent. The space available is obvious, even when viewing the exterior of the vehicle. For a car of this size, the master craftsmen at Mercedes have done exceptionally well to give it a balance of elegance and sportiness. Smooth surfaces and clean lines elevate the appearance of this car above the grouping of mere people carrier, and into a league of its own. The sporty look is enhanced by the upward rising lines and striking wheel arches of the sides, whilst the design of both the headlamps and the dynamic shape of the radiator trim ensure a powerful impact is delivered from the front. It was agreed upon before we even viewed the interior that this was the finest vehicle of its size we had ever laid our eyes upon. An impressive cockpit awaited us inside the vehicle and as you would expect from a Mercedes-Benz, everything looked immaculate. A stylish dashboard with a tablet like display, complete with an Audio 20 USB multimedia system was well positioned and easy to operate. The quality of the leather seats was obvious and made for a very comfortable driving position. The ambient lighting and all of the finer details and trims were a pleasure to look at, especially the cockpit’s elegant piano lacquer finish. It was easy to see that only the very best materials have been used throughout the interior. There is more than enough head, feet and knee room in this car for the driver and all passengers and it was instantly obvious how much fun it would be for a family to take a long trip in this Mercedes. Convenience is key in this motor vehicle’s design and all of this Mercedes’ doors can be opened individually by pressing a button on the dashboard. The V-Class is extremely versatile and can be fitted as a 6, 7 or 8-seater, depending on your personalised needs and desires. This allows for you to customise their vehicle to suit their lifestyle. The boot is a good size to hold a family’s suitcases and has a space-saving opening system with two loading levels and two baskets. It can be opened and closed electronically using the EASY-Pack tailgate, by simply pressing a button. We were most intrigued to discover how this large vehicle performed on the roads. For a car of this size, we were half expecting a sluggish performance when compared to the average saloon car and for obvious reasons. We were however; in for the pleasant surprise we are always seeking. This car performed like a champion! The V-Class boasts a 4-cylinder 2.0 L petrol engine complimented by a 7-speed automatic 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission. You have 211hp at their 60

fact magazine

disposal and 350Nm of torque. This allows for this beast of a car to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 9.4 seconds and to reach a top speed of 210km/h. Not bad for a vehicle weighing in at just over 2 tonnes! As we powered our way along the roads, listening to the high-quality Burmester surround sound system, the car dominated the hills and corners with power and precision. We were very impressed with the suspension, handling and the overall command of this automobile, never feeling like we were carrying a large weight around with us, a true pleasure to drive. As you would expect with a Mercedes, important safety features such as airbags have been included as standard. These features also include the Collision Prevention System as well as the radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise control, both designed with your and surrounding vehicles’ safety in mind. We have to say that we thoroughly enjoyed this plus sized experience and were certainly surprised by its good looks and strong capabilities. We encourage you to book a test drive and experience it for yourself. ✤

MCLAREN 675LT: A BESPOKE MACHINE Any McLaren 675LT is a very special car that already stands out from the crowd, although if a customer desires something even more dramatic – and even more exclusive – McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is on hand to ensure that bespoke requirements are met, no matter how complex. Challenged to produce a road-going homage to the McLaren F1 GTRs that performed so strongly in endurance racing in the 1990s, winning the 1996 BPR Global Endurance Series and the GT1 Class at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1997, MSO has created a McLaren 675LT that combines a famous racing livery with personalised and bespoke features to the customer’s brief. The project, which was undertaken with agreement from Gulf Oil International Ltd that its famous racing livery colours could be used, occupied more than 1,000 hours of MSO time. The paintwork – including airbrushing – accounted for 800 hours of that total. “Creating a car like this unique McLaren 675LT, crafted to individual customer specification, is exactly the type of demanding commission that MSO Bespoke was formed to embrace,” explained Ansar Ali, Managing Director, McLaren Special Operations. “Transforming the existing car from its original single colour paintwork to a tribute to the McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ in Gulf Racing livery was incredibly demanding in its own right, but was

only part of the brief; we also replaced numerous standard 675LT components with MSO parts and further personalised the car to clearly identify it with its owner, a service that an increasing number of MSO customers request.” ✤ fact magazine

R

yuichi Sakamoto remains to this day one of the people who sparks a myriad of ideas in everything Kenzo does. Starting off as one third of pioneering electro group, ‘yellow magic orchestra’ and then a solo composer, activist and dancer, over the course of his career, he has epitomised progress and reform, enlightenment and enrichment. Sayoko Yamaguchi, one of the world’s original supermodels, was one of Kenzo Takada’s muses. Her originality lay in her capacity to offer chameleonlike qualities to endless inspirations. Upon looking through the many images in the house’s archives of her and Kenzo, the brand’s creative team was inspired by her transformative character. For both collections, Kenzo aims to capture the duality of the two figures. It looks to the era when they both ruled on two distant continents; to Ryuichi’s personal flair when questioning the norm, and to Sayoko’s ability to mix patterns, prints, silhouettes, and colours. For the women’s collection, Kenzo worked with clashing stripes and florals. Paisley skirts meet racing tees. Ruffled dresses in crepe appear with floral jacquard coats. Men’s tailored elements contrast with boldly-feminine metallic silks or memory satin in dusty pinks. Reversible raincoats offer the option of a classic trench or high gloss. Trouser shapes are the meeting of ski pants and bikers. Baby blue, vivid yellow and fuchsia transparent organzas are worn over graphic skirts and tops. Women’s accessories pack a floral punch with especially conceived flower appliqués on belts, chokers and materially mélanged sandals. The new ‘gyoza’ tote with a ball clasp fastening makes its debut in vivid neon, stripes or patent leather. The men’s collection’s style is reminiscent of Ryuichi’s individualism. A collage of British tailoring and Japanese baseball, shapes are strong shouldered and high-waisted. 50’s baseball trousers are matched with graphic album cover tees. Prints exclusively supplied by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself are worn alongside paisley and striped trousers and tops. Men’s trench belts are worn affixed to trousers or extra-long. The micro gym bags come in a leather nylon mix. Flat soled boots or sandals complement the cropped finish trousers. ✤

MEATY BUSINESS

The global brand that is The Butcher Shop and Grill has aimed to ‘Raise the Steaks’ since the early 1990s. It was conceived in Johannesburg, South Africa and rapidly became recognised as one of the standout dining venues which lead by example in the real meat business. • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

I

n each venue of The Butcher Shop & Grill, quality has been transposed throughout the globe in every carnivorous canteen. The team pride themselves on the way they embrace the ageing process of the meat in order to amplify flavour and tenderness. Prime cuts are combined with bold marinades, a dazzling array of sides and house made ‘saucy’ creations - buckle up for a mouth watering ride. The clever use of wooden panelling and retro 1950’s furniture creates the illusion of being in a stockyard diner. ‘Americana’ rather than ‘Afrikaaner’ dominates the décor and exudes what can only be described as ‘contemporary vintage.’ The aromas which drifted, in a tantalising fashion, from the kitchen did more than whet our appetites, however, the team at The Butcher’s Shop and Grill had pre-empted this! Biltong was developed by settlers in South Africa in response to the searing heat and lack of refrigeration on the veldt. Prime strips of beef are pickled and dried and in the case of Butcher Shop, served in abundance as a complementary appetiser. The peppery, pickling of the Biltong teased our palates and made us eager to peruse the menu. Executive Chef Ajith Ransinhe has been with the company for thirteen years, three of which have been spent in Bahrain ensuring that standards are high and the quality of the ingredients and produce is given priority. Brilliance is all too often created by the simplest of details, from the simplest ingredient such the spices to the highest quality piece of meat a careful ageing process to the meat in order to create good food. The appetisers were punctuated with influences from the many different settlers who made South Africa their home including Beef Carpaccio, Greek Salad, Baby Calamari and traditional Afrikaans dishes such as Beef Tongue or Boerewars Sausages. I would defy any diner not to struggle with narrowing down their selection. When pressed to, I opted for the salty, tangy and delicately dressed Goats cheese salad. Having caught a glimpse of the bounteous platters of meat which would soon be winging their way to our table I felt it wise to err on the side of caution with a light appetiser. For diners wanting to opt for a convivial experience with friends, family or a companion then the Espetada, chunks of lamb, chicken or beef seared and suspended on a large skewer, are a must. Should your companion be a seafood lover then they will not be disappointed by the Seafood Skillets, Platters and Pots. My companion and I decided to stick with much loved staples and signature dishes. The Butcher Burger formed from minced Wagyu Beef layered with bacon, cheese and a fried egg is not for the faint hearted. Its size

does not detract from the phenomenal quality of the beef and the wafer thin, milk washed onion rings add an extra level of texture. As I mentioned earlier. the philosophy here is good food not fast food. The arrival of the Tomahawk Steak further exemplified this. Sitting resplendently upon a wooden board garnished with golden skinny fries and grilled corn, it was not just a meal but a beautiful piece of food art. Out of respect we sat taking in its full glory for a moment, before devouring it. The sides included every possible take on potatoes, perfectly grilled vegetables and tantalising dips and sauces. As I began to wish that I had chosen to wear a slightly looser waistband dessert arrived. The selection offers as light or decadent a conclusion as you desire. Butcher’s Chocolate Fondant, Mango Mousse or traditional Pavlova are but a few of the surprisingly inventive selection. Superb quality combined with inspired sauces and sides reigns supreme at The Butcher Shop and Grill where flawlessly fantastic food, not fast food is served. ✤

ringing together grand Italian and French innovative cuisine, Marzipan takes fusion cooking to a whole new level. Located in the heart of Galleria Mall, Marzipan combines the freshest of ingredients with the most inventive recipes to offer you an array of choices. As we made our way into its grandiose interiors, we knew we were in for a good time. Decked up in gorgeous gold fixtures and vibrant ornaments, the restaurant offers a unique amalgamation of Parisian fine dining and a trendy café bistro with a lounge on the first floor. As we sat down for our culinary expedition, we were immediately treated to some of the fluffiest bread ever along with an assortment of heavenly spreads. We couldn’t get enough! A refreshingly light and creamy concoction, our first dish of Salmon Chowder was the perfect start to our meal. Creamed salmon soup served with rye croutons, drizzled with prawn oil, it is packed with aromatic flavours while being distinctly light on the palate. Comfort food at its finest. Offering a menu that captures the true essence of European cuisine with an Arabic influence, Marzipan is all about delectable food in luxurious and hospitable surroundings. With the hot summer months upon us, their refreshing appetiser of Seafood Melon Exo is unlike anything we have ever had before. Truffle scented melon balls served with seafood and mango salad, ranch dressing and basil oil, the dish offers a marvellous blend of tastes and textures all in one plate. The delicious contrast of the sweet mango and melon along with the fresh sea food is something you just have to try yourself!

The perfect combination of elegant presentation and unprecedented flavour is what gives Marzipan its culinary edge. Our next dish of Roccaberry Salad came with a beautiful presentation that was only surpassed by its taste. Serving up intense flavour and Instagram-worthy gorgeousness, the crisp roca leaves along with an assortment of berries and strawberry dressing is all kinds of delicious. If you thought salads can’t be fun, you definitely need to try this! It was finally time to dig into some meaty delights. Our next dish of hearty Crust Lamb Chops is indulgence at its best. Oven baked nut and mint tea crusted lamb chops served with eggplant zucchini ragout, fondant potato and pomegranate sauce, the meat is incredibly soft and succulent and is bursting with tantalising flavour. The baked nut and mint tea crust is definitely what makes this dish a winner. Following this epic explosion of taste, our next dish

CAFÉ ARABICA FOR THE WIN!

It’s funny that every time we go out we look for the place that offers us the comfort of our homes! At least, FACT’s Layal Mahmoud does. Who wants to sit on a rigid chair like a toddler punished for saying a bad word? She went to check out the lush Café Arabica on Amwaj Islands…

M

y mission gets a little bit more complicated if I decide to meet my friends in the beautiful lagoon at Amwaj Island; just too many choices that put you at bewilderment. Well, no more. I have found the perfect spot for all, a Shisha lover or health enthusiast; it’s Café Arabica on the first floor between gates 3 and 4 – The Lagoon, Amwaj. Needless to say that when the weather is right the outdoor setup is great! Indoors, the area is divided into smoking and non-smoking areas. Comfortable bamboo-like sofas, warm colours featuring Arabic patterns and plenty of premium quality screens both indoors and outdoors (exactly what you need with your shisha to cheer for your favourite team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup). We reached our targeted destination at around 2pm carrying our hopes for Tunisia to win her fateful match and to be treated with satisfying dishes at the same time. Even at this hour it wasn’t overwhelmingly sunny at the tables by the window, which I thought was a bonus at this lovely place. The menu is quite rich with a wide variety of international choices leaving no taste bud without something to be pleased with. The Chicken Coxinhas is definitely a well-balanced appetiser to start your meal, four creamy chicken balls served with a mayo based sauce. Boomerang lovers and Instagram fanatics will be more than happy to try the Beef Chocho; a generous plate of six skewers of tender beef smothered in sweet tamarind sauce but served with a flame to never have a cold bite. Many more dishes are equally exciting such as the delicious Dynamite Prawns. Indian, Mediterranean, Italian, all at your service when it comes to choosing a main course! We were lucky to be treated with four different creations. The chicken biryani was authentically moreish and tastyl. The elevated beef steak is camera ready and delectable, served with mash potato and steamed vegetables and the famous mushroom sauce. If you’re on the preference of white meat, you can ask for the chicken tarragon; two pieces of tender chicken breast drizzled with creamy tarragon sauce and special basmati rice, or go even healthier with the seared salmon dish and the uplifting flavours of capers and red chilli accompanied by a refreshing green salad in balsamic dressing. All kinds of fresh juices and tea or coffee, and smoothies and soft drinks are available at convenient prices. Some specials are tempting to investigate just like the special watermelon we had, literally half a watermelon is served with an inch wide skin to dig into after the mouthwatering liquid concoction is over; a juice and a healthy snack for two all in one! For a sweet ending, you can choose from a range of supplied cakes and cheesecakes, or go for a house made dessert like the one we indulged in; deliciousness in a cup! Chocolate brownies topped with vanilla ice-cream and that mysterious flavour that I couldn’t figure out on my own (so, naturally, I’ll just have to come back and try it again!). Why don’t you go and try it out as well, the next time you’re in beautiful Amwaj? And if you have a child with you, not to worry; there is a play area right next door. How convenient! ✤ 90

s we look through our vast collection of lotions and potions in our beauty wardrobe we cannot help but query whether or not they really work and whether or not we have just succumbed to a life of nonsensical products. The saying prevention is better than cure is always prevalent in our minds when it comes to our anti-ageing regime, but, as we are busy ladies we want to be looking ‘on fleek’ all hours of the day - is that too big of an ask? This is where CACI rears its scientifically crafted magic wand… and pronto. Sitting down in the beautiful waiting area I was greeted by my lovely therapist who thankfully brought me a glass of water on account of my flushed face (this heat really isn’t doing me any favours) whilst I filled out their mandatory consultation form. She politely asked me what I wanted to achieve from said CACI treatment and I simply responded “a noticeable difference.” She gave me a smile that was all knowing and I couldn’t wait to see what her professional acumen would further result in. As I sashayed towards entering one of the 12 treatment rooms, I lingered at the amazing centrepiece relaxation zone enroute. This area is vertically cocooned with an illustrious array of Swarovski crystals adorning it and the elegant use of fluidity is nothing short of amazing as I felt myself transfixed by the twinkling dimensions. so many of my friends relishing of tales about their wonderful experiences at Rimal Spa - in particular their renowned Turkish Hammam Suites - that I hadn’t prepared myself for the overall aesthetically pleasing surroundings. Alas, my skin was crying out for this treatment, so, I didn’t want to wait a second longer therefore I allowed my therapist to distract my gaze and to start the process of reversing the effects of ageing. This electronic beauty treatment gives your face its very own workout as it firms your face by toning muscles, ironing out creases, fine lines with the added bonus of preventing skin from sagging - it sounds too good to be true, right? Actions speak louder than words and you could see similarities in this process as abdominal toning belts work because this nonsurgical apparatus sends tiny electrical impulses into your skin to stimulate the muscles on your behalf, so, you can sit back, relax and let the machine do all the hard work. There’s no pain and all the gain! We are all for retaining our youth and in this day-and-age where dermatologists are screaming out for you to do botox or indeed try out fillers, we are forever longing for non-invasive procedures that actually work. CACI is perfect for those needing high precision results as this treatment gently lifts, tightens and tones the facial muscles whilst smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles - I could see my cheekbones again for the first time in years. My skin was beautifully re-hydrated whilst the tone and texture were visibly improved, leaving my skin with a wonderful glow and a firmer, more supple appearance. A relaxing non-surgical face lift treatment with immediate and dramatic results… hey, it could even adorn itself as a possible lunch hour face lift! ✤

Summertime Blues

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Georgina Jennsen is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. a social media influencer who loves all things luxurious.

Recently an old client sent me a message asking, “Is it ok if I use diet pills and supplements to help me with losing weight and if yes what would you recommend.” Before I could reply she already knew my answer which was to stay away from diet pills. This is a question Personal Trainers get asked quite frequently and hopefully most would tell their clients to stay away from diet pills and concentrate on your nutrition and make sure it’s on point. Diet Pills, Fat Burners, Slimming Pills, Fat Loss Supplements, Fat Blockers, Carb Blockers; they all do the same thing which is to suppress your appetite but unless they have been prescribed by your doctor, stay away. Some years ago, when I was training a client at a London club she nearly passed out and then she confessed that she had been taking diet pills which she had in fact bought over the counter. The label had made all kinds of fancy claims but feeling faint and passing out wasn’t one of them. You really MUST read the ingredients on these things if you make the mistake of buying them. Save your money and invest in some natural appetite suppressants such as Green Tea, Saffron Extracts, Grapefruit Essential Oil, High Fiber Foods and Spicy Foods. The results from eating healthy are the only side effects you want and this requires no prescriptions. For a healthy life make lifestyle changes; pills and potions don’t work. ✤

Are you suffering from island fever yet? You know - that uncomfortable feeling of claustrophobia that gets more intense as the mercury rises. Mine usually makes an appearance around early June, along with the knowledge that we have at least three seriously sweaty months ahead. But there are ways to deal with these summer time blues, and here are a few of my faves: This first one’s a no brainer. Travel, as far away and for as long as you can. Choose a destination with a milder climate, to allow you to spend time outdoors. Because there’s a good chance that once you return back to Bahrain, it’ll still be too steamy to do anything al fresco. Learn something new. Signing yourself up for a summer workshop could see you gaining a new skill, and meeting some fun new buds in the process. Be sure to select something that makes you happy, and that can be done in the comfort of the cool a/c. Don’t stop moving. While the mere thought of getting even sweatier during these summer months may make you cringe, exercising is one of the best ways to help you deal with the heat. Early morning is always a good time to get your workout on, before you’ve had a chance to talk yourself out of it. Happy summer! Xx ✤

With the best days of summer upon us, it is time to bust out the good ol’ sunscreen and your favourite sunnies! As the mercury continues to rise in our beloved sandbox, more and more people will be packing their bags and heading for somewhere cooler. But if Bahrain is where it’s at for you this summer, you have got tons to look forward to. Whether you’re planning to go out and enjoy the warm weather and sunny skies or are planning to stay in the air-conditioned indoors, Bahrain has got you covered. Out of all the things the island has to offer this summer, the annual Bahrain Summer Festival should definitely be at the top of your list. An exciting cultural extravaganza featuring various performances, artistic activities as well as creative workshops, the festival showcases the diversity and heritage of Bahrain in all its glory. While the annual festival is always a treat to the senses, what has me beyond hyped this summer is the 2018 FIFA World Cup! With various venues gearing up for live viewing parties all over the island; football season is going to be a very exciting time in Bahrain. If you’re looking for some fun in the sun, there is an array of amazing beach parties, events as well as mouthwatering barbeques to choose from. Whether you’re soaking up the summer sun, enjoying the brunch life or sipping on some refreshing Mai Tais- the summer fun has just begun! ✤

Sawsan Shaker Marketing Executive, Rubaiyat Bahrain

Hi Sawsan! Tell us some of the goals you're looking forward to achieving with Rubaiyat in 2018... Making such a move from hospitality to the retail industry allowed me to conduct marketing in new creative ways. My goals for Rubaiyat Bahrain revolve around stepping up the cloth industry from merely focusing on traditional marketing to exploring higher and different levels of marketing. A mixture of hospitality and retail, both being in luxury industries, will allow to better serve our customers by customising and enhancing their in-store journey. The shifts that the retail industry should consider are to invest heavily in digital marketing, conduct different collaborations with different industries ensuring a win-win future 98

and last but not least to make the in-store experience of customers memorable and long-lasting. These will be my ultimate goals for Rubaiyat Bahrain. What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Bahrain and why? One of my favourite places that I enjoy visiting is Bahrain fort. The fortress architecture and the low lights at night make the whole scene very magical. I go there every week as it is my peaceful spot that allows me to release stress and clear my mind. Another place that I love going to is Al-Aali Pottery, where I take my little brother and unleash my inner child with him by playing with clay. This place carries many childhood memories, and therefore I always like to relive those moments.

Share with us the best and the most challenging aspects of the marketing world... The best part of my field that keeps me passionate and excited is the dynamic nature of marketing and the constant need to be updated with new global trends. Additionally, the core of marketing is customer-oriented giving me the privilege to work and study in this field in order to better serve people. However, measuring the return on marketing investment has remained a top marketing challenge year-over-year, especially for the traditional marketing activities. It also continues to be a vital way for marketers to understand the effectiveness of each marketing campaign allowing us to reflect back on our activities and enhance our products /services for our customers.
