I

t’s my sixth summer here in the Gulf and, let me get straight to the facts: it doesn’t get easier to handle the heat. There’s nothing like the scorchin’ sun and dry heat of a Bahrain summer, where the a/c is your best friend and you could easily consume a year’s worth of your favourite Baskin Robbins flavoured ice cream in just a few weeks (side confession: I’ve never been to Baskin Robbins so it’s probably a Pinkberry summer for me!). Regardless, if you’re not travelling during the summer months, the Gulf can become an unpleasant place to be. That is, of course, until we tell you why summer in Bahrain could actually be a blessing in disguise. Aside from the fact that school’s out and traffic is (hopefully) more manageable, there are so many amazing deals to take advantage of courtesy of the local hospitality scene. Turn to p17 and get ready to be wowed by the best in the game as they bring you pocket-friendly rates and offers with all the extra-added benefits. MUDDLE CLASS TOUR One of the UK’s biggest comedy superstars, Jason Manford, is returning to the Gulf with his hilarious stand up show Muddle Class.

THE TOUR, WHICH HAS BROUGHT laughter to audiences at over 200 shows in the United Kingdom, will visit Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain later this month.

Jason said: “I always love playing the Laughter Factory, it’s a cracking comedy club and full of proper comedy fans. I know it’s going to be a good crowd.

“I’m coming in July because in 50 degree heat, we all need a good laugh,” he added.

The Gulf will see Jason head back on the road for his Muddle Class tour, which explores Jason’s life growing up ‘working class’, then finding that as he’s got older, part of him has become ‘middle class’, causing much confusion.

His likeable charm and teasing, intelligent wit has won him an army of fans since he shot to stardom on TV as team Captain on Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats in 2007. Jason is thriving off the relentless schedule and the gifted star took to the stage in February 2016 to star as Caractacus Potts in the UK critically acclaimed tour of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ for a 12-month run.

Jason hosts a live three hour show on Absolute Radio each Sunday morning with celebrity guests and his own comedic take on the topics of the week. His show receives huge ratings 10

and is very popular with audiences across the UK. In what spare time he has, Jason runs Manford’s Comedy Club with his brother Colin. Since the launch over two years ago, Manford’s Comedy Club has gone from strength to strength and have booked over 260 comedians to entertain more than 40,000 people in 57 different locations across the country.

From Holiday Parks to Art Centres and from bustling City Centre Nightclubs to quiet out of town theatres, Manford’s Comedy Club has delivered a lot of laughs to a lot of people.

Jason supports Manchester City FC and has a season ticket with his dad and three brothers. He cites Billy Connolly as the first comedian he saw when he was nine years old, and as the first inspiration for him to become a comedian. CAREEM CAPTAINAHS On the historic day that women begin driving in Saudi Arabia, Careem revealed their new fleet of female drivers.

The drivers - referred to as Captainahs – began working with Careem as part of the company’s ongoing mission to simplify and improve lives in the region. This service started in the three major cities (Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam) in the first phase to be expanded to include all cities within a short period.

Careem recognises that up until now, the industry has largely ignored women and the potential they might have to earn an income through our platform. It’s been a wake-up call and we are now investing our time and focus into deep diving into this issue.

Careem has been organising a Women’s Captain Committee to tackle their issues and better understand what barriers might exist for a woman wanting to come and drive for us, and to understand what it takes for us to provide a conducive environment for them to flourish.

Currently around 70% of Careem’s passengers across the region are females, and Careem has been particularly beneficial for females who did not have safe and reliable transport before the introduction of the service in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and many more. Please tell us a little more about your career so far within Bahrain's hospitality industry...

I started my career in hospitality in 1999 as a chef in Phoenicia Hotel back in Beruit, for two years from 1999 to 2001. Later I moved to Dubai with Grand Hyatt Hotel and in 2004 I did a career change to management in media from 2004 to 2018. In 2019 I have rejoined the hotel sector as owner representative for Ramada by Wyndham Manama City Centre.

What is it about the commercial side of a business that draws your attention?

I love this job with Bokhowa Group, as they are into so many different sectors of work, like hospitality, health, restaurants, real estate, etc. They have all categories of business but the best part for me is the hospitality sector which is Ramada by Wyndham City Centre, as I started my career with it.

I have been working in Bahrain for a long time now, and with my working experience I have gained a lot of confidence. I am a team player with good communication skills, and I have a huge Public Relations background and I am a hard worker.

What are some of the challenges you face in your daily role and how do you overcome these?

The biggest challenge is time management, as I am the owner’s representative for the Bokhowa Group, so for me to handle all departments with going on projects and giving them time individually is a bit challenging. But this is exciting as I enjoy tackling hurdles in a way which I love to solve and overcome, and give the best results.

Tell us three important elements of success in the workplace, in your opinion...

I would say: time management, teamwork and communication skills.

What are some of your professional goals for the rest of 2019?

aving produced automobiles since 1937, Volkswagen is a car manufacturer with a great deal of experience as well as a history of producing a variety of popular automobiles.

The massive success of their vehicles led to Volkswagen being named amongst the top 25 largest companies in the world by 2011. This is not surprising when considering the popularity of VW models such at the VW Beetle, VW Golf, VW Passat VW Polo VW Touareg and more recently the VW Tiguan.

Thanks to the team at Volkswagen Bahrain, we were provided with an opportunity to test-drive the all-new Teramont 3.6 SEL SUV. Upon our initial exterior inspection, the Teramont proudly revealed its modern and muscular design complete with classic proportions and clean lines. This new look is bold without being overly aggressive and is accentuated by the vehicle’s external features including the stylish grille as well as the chrome and black matte finishes. The Teramont R-Line pays tribute to the signature style of Volkswagen and gives the car an unmistakable presence on the road. The sporty bumper and uniquely styled LED headlights draw the eyes to the front of the SUV, whilst the glossy black air inlets add panache to both ends. The 20-inch Mejorada alloy wheels are yet another head turning feature and only increase one’s desire to get this attractive model on the road.

The interior of the Teramont proved to be as impressive as the exterior, with the driver’s 10-way power seat providing an extremely comfortable welcome. Made out of Vienna leather, the front seats also come complete with active seat ventilation, perfect for those hot Summer days. The panoramic sunroof extends over almost three rows of seating and ensures ample natural light for all occupants. Perhaps the greatest feature of the Teramont is its fantastic interior design that allows for seven people to sit comfortably. This family-friendly SUV has been designed to ensure it can cater to your needs, with adjustable and collapsible seating throughout. The already generous boot space can be increased dramatically when one folds down either or both the second and third rows of seating. This design also allows for passengers to adjust their backrests, armrests and legroom to ensure maximum comfort. The presence of no less than 17 cup holders is yet another novel and convenient feature of this SUV. The technology in this vehicle proved to have an advanced touch with the updated media navigation system boasting a large and sleek 8-inch HD touchscreen display. This system is easy to operate with its voice control and proximity sensors. Much to our satisfaction, the Teramont’s multiple compatible phone pairing capabilities (Volkswagen App-Connect) allowed us to access music, mapping and various other apps on the dash, from our smartphones.

Once out on the road, we were again pleasantly surprised by what this SUV had to offer. The SEL model houses a 3.6L FSI V6 engine with a power output of 280 PS and 360 Nm of torque. The strength of this well-constructed engine, along with the 4Motion® AllWheel Drive system, allows the driver to handle any conditions that may arise, whilst ensuring optimum driving comfort and handling. The 8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® allows for maximum performance and efficiency, providing the

convenience of an automatic with the hands-on sportiness of a manual transmission. All this translates to a beautiful car with ample power that is easy to control and a whole lot of fun to drive.

Safety has been another major consideration of the Teramont’s designers with a multitude of safety features having been incorporated. These features include the safety cage design of the chassis, Park Distance Control & Park Assist, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Traffic Alert, an automatic post-collision braking system as well as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go. But wait, there’s more. Three-point safety belts have been included for all seats, whilst side-curtain head-protection airbags that cover all three rows are also present. Additionally, the space for three child seats in the second row is one of the most unique and intresting features of this vehicle. There is little doubt that Volkswagen have taken the safety of your family very seriously indeed.

By the time we found ourselves back at Volkswagen Bahrain, we had to agree that it was difficult to fault any aspect of the Teramont. In fact, we felt that the designers of this respectable SUV had managed to impress in all areas of design, comfort, safety and performance. ✤

evealed at a special event held by Porsche Centre Bahrain, at The Royal Golf Club, Riffa Views, the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera S, highlighted the design and performance evolution of the brand’s most iconic sports car. The rear-engine model range has been redesigned and now showcases a more muscular look that pays tribute to its past, while also embracing the future with technology woven into its DNA. Colin Sattar, General Manager of Porsche Centre Bahrain, said: “Just like the first generation, the latest 911 is a sports car for the new era. Our icon has once again evolved and is now more powerful, more emotional, and more efficient than its predecessors.

“It is the best 911 Porsche has ever produced and this eighth generation maintains the 911’s status as a pure driver's car that also offers everyday usability and unique design,” he added. “As such, I am delighted to announce that the 911 Carrera S and the 911 Carrera 4S are now available here in Bahrain.”

The turbocharged flat-six engine of both models now produces 450 hp. This corresponds to an increase of 30 hp compared with the previous generation. The two 911 variants beat the four-second mark for acceleration from zero to 100 km/h: the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera S needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S, with all-wheel drive, just 3.6 seconds. This makes both models 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors. The optional Sport Chrono Package reduces the sprint by a further 0.2 seconds. Power in the new models is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dualclutch transmission. Top speeds are now measured at 308 km/h for the 911 Carrera S and 306 km/h for the all-wheel drive version. The fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) of the 911 Carrera S is 8.9 l/100 km, while the 911 Carrera 4S records this figure as 9.0 l/100 km.

The new 911’s silhouette remains iconic with an exterior design that draws on its earlier generations, making it familiar and yet undoubtedly new. This eighth incarnation is more assertive, with significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. The rear end is now the same width across all models, highlighting the slimline centre section. At the front, the body is 45 mm wider. Electrical popout handles in the doors emphasise the tapered and smooth side contour, while a bonnet with a pronounced recess evokes the design of the first 911 generations. At the rear, all models feature a rear significantly wider, variable-position rear spoiler and the seamless, elegant light strip. Apart from the front and rear sections, the entire outer shell is now made from aluminium.

The new 911 advances driving dynamics with the new mixed size tyre configuration, with 20-inch wheels on the front axle and 21-inch wheels on the rear axle. At the same time, the tyres on the rear drive-axle are significantly wider than on the front wheels.

The combination results in increased stability, traction and balance while reduced understeer and oversteer improve safety.

The refined chassis design is completed by the next generation of Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which has been extensively developed for the new 911.

The Carrera Cabriolet S and 4S use innovative technology to achieve a previously unattainable coupé-like roof curvature of the closed fabric panel bow roof, something that also offers aerodynamic benefits. A new and lighter hydraulic roof drive allows the convertible top to be opened and closed in around 12 seconds in each case – like on the previous model, this is possible at speeds up to 50 km/h. The integrated, electrically operated wind deflector ensures increased comfort in the 911 Carrera Cabriolet at higher speeds.

In a world first, Porsche has developed the Wet mode, included as standard. This function detects water on the road, preconditions the control systems accordingly and warns the driver, who can then set up the vehicle for enhanced safety, by simply pushing a button or using the mode switch on the steering wheel (Sport Chrono Package).

The new optional LED matrix headlights with PDLS Plus are an eye-catching development. The energy centre of the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System matrix headlights is made up of 84 individual LEDs. The new Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are now available at Porsche Centre Bahrain. ✤

s I entered Fiamma Italian within the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa it was both everything I hoped it would be and would expect from an Italian Trattoria. The décor was reminiscent of an Italian Farmhouse with wrought iron chandeliers hanging from exposed beams and wooden flooring giving a homely, comforting feeling. Combine this with plush, upholstered chairs and marble topped tables, terracotta, azure blue and a complement of other earthy tones and you have the perfect setting. The terrace garden also provides the option of sunny lunches or evenings enjoying the cuisine and a cooling breeze.

Chef Marco Terranova is a native of Sicily meaning that pure traditional, Italian food has formed the foundation of his innovative style. The countries in which he has lived and worked have all left an imprint and influenced his repertoire. Each and every experience and challenge has developed his range as a Chef. Diners are given an insight into his philosophy and the importance for the team at Fiamma to source the finest authentic products and ingredients. This may mean having to import Olive Oil from Liguria or Sicily or tomatoes kissed by the bright Mediterranean sunshine.

It’s probably advisable that I warn you that as you read on you are likely to become very hungry and develop a craving for Italian food. The details of each dish are enough to make you salivate imminently, The Cannelloni with Black Olive, Ricotta and Buffalo Mozzarella was a very fitting place to start. The flavours were laden with Italian tradition yet the presentation was inspired. The cannelloni forming a cylinder, perfectly housing the rich creamy filling and a swipe of the most glossy black olive puree alongside looked both voguish and delicious. This was followed by the Baby Hammour Tartar served with a jug of Green tea and miso emulsion encouraging diners to take an interactive approach and pour the emulsion themselves. Again presentation was sharp and precise although the flavours were rustic Italian.

This was carried throughout each course.

The fish course, Sea Bass with parsley crumb, charcoaled artichoke and potato écrasé; 'smashed' rather than 'mashed' potatoes – was vibrant and fresh . Droplets of parsley infused cream added another element to presentation and taste. In order to elevate the levels of decadence the Beef Fillet comes complete with a slice of the most perfectly seared foie gras and a single potato tower. The baby asparagus added colour and crunch to the dish. One was full after such a gastronomic affair, but for those of you with a sweet tooth you can

expect their dessert selection to be indulgent and brimming with flavours which typify Italian cuisine. The Layers of Chocolate and Hazelnut crème in the Diplomatio Nocciola e Cioccolato are told to be both intense and moreish. Gelato is an iconic Italian creation and their homemade Pistachio Gelato with Almond Caramel Tuille is renowned for being unrivalled!

Visiting Fiamma will be a treat for your senses.

The aroma of woodsmoke from the pizza oven, the Mediterranean tones and hues and the intense Italian flavours alongside their striking presentation will transport you, for a few hours at least, to the hills of Tuscany or the wave lapped beaches of Sicily. This is undoubtedly the place to explore authentic Italian recipes which are treated respectfully

by Chef Terranova whilst also infusing modern and global elements. ✤

resenting timeless classics in a way never introduced before, Furn Bistro and Bakery offers a unique dining experience celebrating the heart and soul of pure Khaleeji cuisine. Combining both local and Western influences, the restaurant stays true to authentic ingredients while still being super innovative in their approach. Never one to miss an opportunity to dine at this amazing venue, we decided to go and indulge in their new menu.

After being ushered in and welcomed by their super friendly staff, we were introduced to our first dish of the day, Beetroot Salad. Packed with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, the refreshing medley of beetroot, feta cheese, arugula, tomato, orange dressing and almond is a pleasing mix of complementing textures and tastes. The feta cheese is light, while the orange dressing offers the perfect amount of zing. It tastes so good; you’ll forget it’s healthy! A true Middle Eastern favourite, our next dish of Baked Eggs felt like a warm hug on the inside. Baked eggs in Oriental tomato sauce and served with Arabic bread, the comforting taste and unique flavours are the best companions on a day when you’re trying to beat the heat. The tomato sauce is fragrant and tangy, while the eggs are done just right and taste oh-so-good! Embracing the true essence of Khaleeji cuisine, Furn marries traditional recipes with modern influences to offer its diners truly distinctive culinary masterpieces. Our next dish of Wagyu Pockets is a genuine representation of what Furn is all about. Three mini kofta with akawi cheese, harissa and onion relish in a sumac bun is heaven in every bite. The meat is super flavourful and tender, while the smooth akawi cheese enhances the taste with just the slightest bit of saltiness. We can’t recommend it enough!

As we were busy diving deep into a food coma, our next dish of Gulf King Prawns was brought out. Prawns with braised fennel, orange, pommery mustard and citrus rice is a treat for all seafood lovers. Brimming with natural flavour, the prawns are done just right and seasoned beautifully, as the citrus rice truly brings the dish together. If you’re someone who loves a good indulgence, their Grilled Lamb Rack should be right up your foodie alley.

Grilled Lamb Rack with potato fondue, Mediterranean vegetable and pepper coulis, the balancing flavours feel like a party in our mouths. The uber succulent lamb is all you need to feel like everything is right in the world. Showcasing Furn’s mesmerising display of the true art of the oven, their Traditional Chicken Tajine has to be one of our favourite dishes of the day. Chicken stew with saffron and dry fruits served with white rice, the dish is an absolute treat to our senses. A delightful blend of sweet and savoury, it is pure bliss in every bite!

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, our desserts for the day had us drooling from the get-go with our forks and cameras at the ready. Oozing with cheese, nuts and sugar syrup, their Kunafa has to be one of the best things we have had in a while. The creamy cheese and perfectly done pastry are happiness on a plate. If ice cream is your thing, their Arabic ice cream selection will have you craving for more. Take your pick from Saffron, Rose, Date or Walnut - so smooth and luscious, they’ll be starring in your dessert dreams for days to come!

e step off the lift and into Indigo to be pleasantly surprised. Not because we saw something extremely extraordinary, but for the sight was really beautiful and unexpected. Indigo at Manama's newly-opened boutique hotel The Merchant House, embraces a fresh summery set up that is utterly inviting. An abundance of greenery that marries well with the solid wood tables in light muted tones, and comfortable furniture adorned in flowery prints of white, green, and pink, all recalls a nostalgic scene at a quaint country home or a cosy dining room in any elegant grandmother’s house. It has a very charming Mediterranean town vibe.

A cosy space that fits about a dozen tables with the ceiling decorated in wood meets brass chandeliers, alongside a glass wall with a wide door that opens up to a welcoming homely terrace; something that looks straight out of a Country Living magazine editorial with a very warm and inviting atmosphere. Oh, we cannot wait for the weather to be right again.

A waiter with a warm smile greets us and helps us to a table of our liking, and we notice a simply designed bar to the right of the main entrance, with a few high chairs dressed in attractive rose leather and an energetic barman ready to amaze you with the intriguing sounds of cocktail shakers.

Soon after, Executive Chef Robert Shipman comes out of the kitchen for a quick hello and we cannot be more excited listening to him passionately explain the additional love that has been poured into the restaurant's food menu. "Revamped, Revised, Revisited... our menu has just got injected with a spot of love" he said.

Not to keep us waiting for too long, Chef Robert heads back to the kitchen leaving us with a growing appetite.

We busy ourselves with a glass of water and a chat about the beauty of the hotel with its original paintings and artistic touches, but mostly, the amazing mezzanine floor dedicated to those who appreciate a good book.

And here comes plate number one: Goat Cheese Salad, lovely and nutty with a touch of sweet from drops of marinated figs. We specifically liked the way the goat cheese was presented warm on crispy bread boats.

Next comes a Sea Bass Sashimi Platter served ceviche style – it’s the ideal antidote to hot summer days with its tangy and fresh taste-bud pleasing flavours. Then we’re wowed by the Beef Rib Samjang; delicious rib cubes nestled in Belgian endive lettuce served with pipirrana salad and sweet chili sauce, it’s a volcano of well-balanced tastes and we just can’t get enough.

At this point, we seek our waiter's help in search of a cooling drink. After some knowledgeable advice, we decided to go with his recommendation and ordered two of Indigo Bar's signature mocktails. Super refreshing!

We’re then faced with two plates of sushi; Salmon and Avocado and Crab and Mango, straight-forward fresh

and recognisable flavours grace our palate and the chopstick pro inside us comes out to play.

Following this, a plate of Seared Scallops sat in front of us – too beautiful to be eaten. Golden scallops scattered amongst colourful baby carrots and creamy dashes of sunchoke puree with a hot and citrusy punch from the amazing yuzu kosho salsa.

A lovely and light Asian touch that we wholly approve of.

Finally, a plate of pure greatness for all red meat lovers: Lamb Shank slowly cooked for 18 long hours, served gorgeously tender and falling off the bone. It stands firmly on an extraordinary bed of polenta and rosemary balsamic sauce. It is as perfect as the beauty of a grand finale; the final hurdle that is nothing but real pleasure. We were SO impressed.

Full and satisfied, we couldn’t, however, leave without a sweet ending! The amazing chef decided that we must try his special Yuzu Cheesecake – and special it is indeed! The bitterness of the yuzu cuts through the richness of the white chocolate all in a texture match made in heaven. Just the right dose of sweetness from a walnut crumble instead of the crust. The fruiti di bosco is equally light and berry delicious to perfectly conclude a delightful meal.

All we can say is that a revisit to Indigo will definitely remain on the cards, every single time we’re hungry and craving quality ingredients and lush flavours. We suggest you take note and do the same! ✤

ith dishes that are packed with rich flavour and a plethora of variations to choose from, it’s no wonder why Indian food is one of our all-time favourite cuisines. To satisfy our craving for some muchneeded curry, we decided to head over to Spices Restaurant. Needless to say, we gorged on so much more than just curry! One for our go-to for innovative and contemporary Indian cuisine, Spices Restaurant leaves us feeling happy and satiated each and every time. Introducing a modern, fine dining approach to traditional cuisine, the restaurant offers unparalleled taste and service in a super chic setting. Beginning our culinary expedition with an Indian classic, our Amuse Bouche for the day had us extremely excited. Pani Puri, a round hollow puri, fried crisp and filled with a mixture of tamarind chutney, mint chutney and potato, the dish was an explosion of aromas that took us back to the streets of Mumbai.

Adding to the commendable legacy of the restaurant, Chef Pramod Bijalwan aims to infuse the true and authentic flavours of India right into the heart of Bahrain. Breathing new life into timeless classics, Chef Pramod aims to bring Indian food to the island like never before. A delectable representation of his culinary prowess, our next dish of Kalgi Kebab is love at first bite. Chicken leg boneless marinated with curd, lemongrass and a mix of Chef’s special Indian spices, the dish had us oohing and aahing from the get-go. Staying true to its royal namesake, the chicken is super tender and cooked just right, with the special spices and lemongrass enhancing its flavour perfectly. We don’t mind coming back JUST for this!

Offering tastes from all over India, Spices Restaurant introduces the region’s complex yet delicious tastes in all its glory. Bringing to the fore the rich heritage of India’s culinary history, our next dish of Gosht Nihari could not have been any tastier. Slow cooked lamb shank served with Taftan bread flavoured with saffron, the dish is comfort food at its finest. The lamb shank is juicy, fall off the bone soft, while the saffron flavoured bread is super light and tastes luxurious - a match made in foodie heaven!

An excellent option for all the healthy food enthusiasts and vegans out there, our next dish of Shindi Kadi and Rajasthani Gatta should be right up your alley. Made with gram flour and tamarind, the dish delivers a unique mix of flavours and textures.

Extremely light on your palate yet brimming with delightful textures, the dish gives you the very best of both worlds.

the new is what makes it stand out from the rest. Giving us the true Spices experience, the Dum Murgh Biryani has got to be one of the most fantastic biryanis imaginable. A mouthwatering savoury rice dish loaded with spices, marinated chicken, caramelised onion and flavourful saffron rice, it had us drooling from start to finish. The caramelised onion was a lovely touch.

Bringing our meal to a sweet conclusion, the final dish and dessert for the day is true indulgence on a plate. Grated coconut dumpling served with rice pudding, the exquisite combination of Coconut Ladoo and Mawa Kheer is unlike anything we have ever had before. The dish is sweet without being too overwhelming, with the fresh and appetising flavour of the Coconut Ladoo complimenting the creaminess of the Mawa Kheer effortlessly.

Presenting the tastes of India on a stunning platter, Spices Restaurant understands that dining is so much more than just eating. Focusing on the dining experience as a whole, the restaurant goes above and beyond to give you the very best in hospitality, ambience and taste. The Myth of Spot Reduction

Summertime Fine, Your Way!

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Aanchal Duggal is an avid bibliophile and fashion enthusiast trying to make a living out of doing what she loves. Aanchal is new to Bahrain & exploring!

I recently measured the body fat percentage of a client.

The percentage of fat on the back of his arm (triceps) had gone up, so he then went to the gym and used every machine that’s meant to target the triceps. He came back and asked me to take the measurement again. I smiled and once again pointed out that fat loss doesn’t work this way.

The human body does what it wants and loses fat from wherever it wants so if you’re 20kg to 30kg overweight doing 1000 abs crunches isn’t going to give you a six pack in six weeks, neither will doing every tricep exercise you can think of for a week to give you fabulous looking arms.

To lose fat anywhere on your body you need to be in a calorie deficit, and this is done by weight training, cardiovascular work and good nutrition. This will decrease the fat stores throughout your whole body which includes your problem areas.

So, the truth is 1000 ab exercises will not get you that flat stomach, 100 squats will not lose fat from your legs and 50 tricep exercises will not get rid of the bingo wings, it’s a combination of everything.

Unfortunately, the order of which fat is burnt is down to genetics which is impossible to change so where you gain it first will be the place you lose it last. So, don’t focus on spot reduction and do as I said above, focus on the whole body. ✤

While the warmer weather is all about vacationing in exotic destinations, sunbathing and scrumptious barbeques, it also brings with it the need to look summertime fine. With cute travel instas and envyinducing bikini snaps doing the rounds on all your social media platforms, the need to look your very best is at an all time high. Since the pressure to achieve everything on your bucket list and making it the best summer ever can be overwhelming, it is important to take a step back and truly enjoy the sunshine-filled season. This summer, make it all about creating lasting memories and spending time with loved ones than capturing the most FOMO worthy Instagram shot. Do that one summer activity that reminds you of your childhood, finally read that book you have been putting off for a while now, call up a long-lost friend and meet them up for coffee, explore the Farmers’ Markets in your area or simply relax and unwind at home as you whip up a new recipe. Tackling an objective personal to you and taking pleasure in simple joys of summer are so much important than ensuring your summer is goals personified.

With the sun out and the weather breezier than ever, go easy on yourself and take it one day at a time. Don’t forget to keep hydrated and wear that new swimsuit with confidence! ✤

Qalát al-Bahrain – this fort was the first cultural landmark I shared with my family as a newcomer to the island. It was a gripping experience standing on such history, yet overlooking the modern architecture of the city of Bahrain Block 338 Adliya - Bahrain's bustling dining district. It holds the promise of a charming pedestrian quarter crammed with delightful little spots waiting to be discovered.

Manama Souk - I love taking a stroll at night through the vibrant merchant streets of Manama, indulging in the traditional aromas of Bahrain stemming from perfumes, spices, bukhoor and culinary delights.
