ABDULLA MUIJRERS
AHMED AL NOOH
Founder, Motör Militia Jiu-Jitsu Champion
Motör Militia, formed in 2001 by drummer Abdulla Muijrers, has been rocking Bahrain's heavy metal scene for more than 20 years. What started as a high school band quickly turned into a lifelong passion with the band growing under Abdulla's leadership, alongside longtime member and lead guitarist Hisham Alawadhi, lead guitarist Ahmed Janahi, Australian vocalist John Baker and bass guitarist Mohammed Alkhuzaie.
As early pioneers of the thrash genre in the region, they were one of the first metal bands in the Arabian Gulf and Middle East to release a full-length album of original material on an independent label in 2004. Since then, they've been instrumental in nurturing a sense of community among Bahrain's hard rock enthusiasts, inspiring and helping other bands to get their start.
From playing at the 2011 Deccan Rock Festival in India to sharing the stage with legends from Machine Head, Exodus, Lamb of God and Megadeth, Motör Militia has had numerous milestones over the years. But perhaps their most significant achievement came in 2018 with the release of their album World in Flames
Showcasing the band's growth and maturity, it featured fan favourite tracks Supremacy and Reckoning
The group shows no signs of slowing down – with new songs in the pipeline and plans for an end-of-year rock festival, Abdulla remains dedicated to elevating Bahrain’s metal scene. His vision also includes establishing a GCC touring circuit to unite local and regional metal bands. Rock on, Motör Militia!

Ahmed Al Nooh, a dedicated lecturer and soft skills trainer from Noaim, Bahrain, is making waves not just in the classroom but also on the jiu-jitsu mat. Despite starting in the sport just three years ago, he has already achieved remarkable success, recently winning double gold at the AJP Tour Doha International Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
Ahmed’s journey into jiu-jitsu began in late 2020, sparked by a trial class at Reza's Martial Art Center. Captivated by its focus and meditative qualities, he quickly found himself immersed in the sport, seeking solace in its disciplined practice. "I like the way that you get disconnected from the world and focus only on yourself and your opponent," he says. "It's like another way of meditation and releasing negative energy."
Having quickly risen to the rank of blue belt with three stripes, Ahmed has already secured an impressive collection of six gold medals in various competitions. Among his proudest moments is winning his first gold against a formidable opponent at the Saudi Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championship in Riyadh in 2020 and again in 2023, within a month of receiving his blue belt, bolstering his status as a rising star in the sport.
The future looks bright for Ahmed as he aims to continue his winning streak, setting his sights on the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship (Abu Dhabi World Pro), hoping to raise the Bahraini flag on the global stage. His journey, however, is not just about personal triumphs but also about inspiring others, particularly the younger generation, who he feels will have a big impact on society and the future of Bahrain. You go, champ!

AHMED AL-SHARAF & NATALIE YOUNG
Co-Founders, Raptor Rehab
Co-founded by Ahmed, a Bahraini ICT professional with a love for natural sciences, and Natalie, an environmental educator, Raptor Rehab Bahrain is an organisation dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of birds of prey.
With a shared passion for falconry, their journey began eight years ago with the recognition of the need to help injured raptors return to the wild, especially with Bahrain serving as a vital migratory route. This vision led to the establishment of Raptor Rehab, which aims to not only rehabilitate these incredible birds of prey but also raise awareness about the importance of protecting them and their natural habitats.
Through school visits and collaborations with local organisations and government agencies, Raptor Rehab has rescued countless birds and initiated projects like Owl Alternative Housing and the relocation of non-native birds. Ahmed and Natalie have also proudly represented Bahrain at local and international events, presenting their achievements, success stories and sharing their findings and techniques.
With exciting projects in the pipeline, they plan to expand their efforts by collaborating with regional organisations to establish a safe passage for all migrating species. They are also launching a tagging and tracking initiative, on a not-for-profit basis, that will provide valuable data for scientific research and conservation efforts.
Through education and collective action, Ahmed and Natalie are not only rehabilitating birds of prey but also inspiring the community to safeguard Bahrain’s biodiversity. Through their ongoing efforts, they hope to create a sustainable and harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife in the region. Fly high, Ahmed & Natalie!

HUDA AHMED
Founder, Unknotted
Ahmed, a remarkable Bahraini woman and mathematics major at an American university, is not only passionate about numbers but also mental health advocacy. She has turned her own struggles into a mission to support others and founded Unknotted, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming mental health care in Bahrain.
Huda’s personal battle with Health Anxiety Disorder went undiagnosed until 2018 and intensified during the pandemic, leading to depression. The isolation she felt highlighted the need for mental health resources in Bahrain. Determined to make a change, Huda was inspired by a support network in Jeddah and the music video When I Am Gone by Eminem, depicting the power of sharing stories. The tragic loss of a barista to mental illness further fuelled her resolve to take the next step and, in 2021, she founded Unknotted, a support group aimed at reducing mental health stigma, spreading awareness and providing free, high-quality services, including group sessions and therapy.
Unknotted has already made significant strides, partnering with Sulwan Psychiatric Hospital to run a focus group therapy programme. Calling for corporate sponsorship, Huda hopes to expand this and introduce a financial-aid initiative for subsidised individual mental health care at partner hospitals and clinics.
Her vision is for Unknotted to tackle mental health reform in Bahrain and shape national policy by advocating for disability pensions, increased psychiatric resources and updated hospital facilities. Huda’s extraordinary commitment to mental well-being is transforming lives in Bahrain, making her a true local hero!

meaningful for Isa. Winning first place in the prestigious Francesco Forno 2012 competition in Italy was a major milestone, validating his artistic approach and technique. The Al Thani Award in Qatar, which he won three times, alongside seven medals from the Austrian International Competition, highlights the consistency and quality of his work. His recent solo exhibition at Katara Cultural Village in Doha further demonstrates his commitment to sharing his vision with a wider audience.

He has also founded Amakin Trips, a travel photography team specialising in immersive experiences, making photography a tool for cultural exploration. Isa envisions a vibrant future for the island's photography scene, with more support structures and a dedicated ‘incubator’ programme specifically designed to nurture and refine the local talent. Shamsaha was born from MJ’s professional expertise and personal experiences, along with her understanding of how such initiatives work. “When I came to Bahrain [in 2013], I realised that this would be a perfect place to begin the region’s first and full-scale domestic and violence crisis response programme because of the progressive and compassionate nature of the community. But also, because, like everywhere, there was a need,” said MJ. In the last 10 years, Shamsaha has assisted more than 90,000 women across the Arabian Gulf (including Bahrain), Egypt, Palestine and Sudan, offering crisis advocacy support and psychosocial first aid through its 24/7 mobile application and in-person care. With 100-plus trained volunteers, the project ensures that no woman needs to face abuse alone.
Having scaled its operations throughout the region, using Bahrain’s successful programme as its model, MJ plans to expand Shamsaha with additional service partners, including lawyers, therapists, doctors and emergency food and shelter providers. Her work showcases how compassion and determination can spark change in society, bringing hope to countless lives and paving the way for a future where every woman feels safe and supported. Founder, A Box of Goodness
Meet Miro Dole, the heart behind A Box of Goodness, a local initiative spreading kindness in Bahrain. Originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka, Miro has been in the Kingdom since 2015, working in the real estate industry, and has always been an advocate of charity.
A Box of Goodness began in 2016 as Miro's way of giving back to the community. Inspired by the idea of sharing blessings with the less fortunate, she introduced the concept of collecting daily items in a box, to be given to those in need at the end of each month. Now, eight years on, what started as a simple act of kindness has evolved into a multi-faceted organisation with several projects.
As an unregistered charity, A Box of Goodness does not receive financial assistance and relies solely on the generosity of local and expat donors and volunteers. Yet, despite these challenges, it has thrived, supporting individuals and families both locally and internationally. With initiatives like responding to earthquake victims in Türkiye and Syria and annual Ramadan and Christmas drives, the charity continues to support the less fortunate. Looking ahead, Miro envisions even greater involvement from corporates and schools, particularly engaging students in hands-on charitable activities. Collaborations with schools like St Christopher’s School and Nadeen School Bahrain have already proven impactful, allowing pupils to actively participate in distributing donations during Ramadan. Miro believes that engaging youth in charitable work not only benefits the community but also nurtures a future generation of compassionate global citizens. A true gift to society that keeps on giving!

Founder, Bahrain Stargazers Astronomy Club
MYRIAM ALQASSAB VOICELESS SOULS OF BAHRAIN
Born and raised in the Kingdom, Myriam is a mother and an astronomy educator with a passion for all things cosmic. As president of the Bahrain Stargazers Astronomy Club and National Outreach Coordinator for Bahrain at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Office of Astronomy Outreach, her dedication to exploring the universe is truly inspiring. Her journey began in 2016, when she founded the Bahrain Stargazers Astronomy Club. What started as a gathering of likeminded enthusiasts has now taken on a bigger role to ensure that IAU astronomy events are implemented in Bahrain. One example was its participation in the Name ExoWorlds competition in 2022, in collaboration with Ghazi Al-Gosaibi Secondary Girls' School and the Bahrain Astronomical Society, in which Bahrain named the exoplanet WASP-121 'Dilmun' and its associated planet WASP121b ‘Tylos’. The club's mission is to make astronomy outreach activities and education accessible to all by collaborating with organisations and schools across the Kingdom.
Myriam is also a DarkSky Delegate, having first-hand experience of the challenge of light pollution in Bahrain. Realising that the community in the region lacked awareness of its effects, not just on stargazing but also on healthy ecosystems, she joined DarkSky International to advocate for the importance of dark skies. With club members having already discovered three provisional asteroids and named an exostar and an exoplanet, Bahrain Stargazers are eager to make more discoveries in the future. They also hope to participate in international competitions to represent Bahrain and are working to establish an astronomy museum in the Kingdom. As for Myriam, she’s planning to publish her research on astronomy education in the Arab region. Reach for the stars!

Animal Welfare Group
An extraordinary group of local volunteers is making a meaningful difference to the welfare of the island’s neglected animals through the Voiceless Souls of Bahrain (VSOB) Group.
Founded in 2015 by the late Putri Aidawati Ahmad, VSOB is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the care and protection of the country's stray and abandoned animals. The devoted team, including members like Manoj, an animal-loving part-time driver, and passionate volunteers, Virmala, Lorraine and Linda, operates entirely on donations and community support.
VSOB's mission is to reduce the stray animal population through spaying, neutering and rehoming efforts. They also provide medical treatments and feed more than 100 dogs and countless cats across the country. With the number of animals in their care continually rising due to the influx of abandoned pets, VSOB collaborates closely with various groups dedicated to rescue efforts in Bahrain and is also assisted by veterinary clinics that offer discounted packages and treatments.
Envisioning a better future, VSOB seeks to educate the community about the importance of animal welfare. With the financial support of loyal donors, group members plan to continue their efforts, supporting other volunteers and groups and working to ensure Bahrain's voiceless souls are heard. We salute you!

THE EPITOME OF POWER AND PERFORMANCE
FACT spent some quality time with the latest generation Porsche Panamera, a truly phenomenal luxury saloon, offering everything one could possibly want in a high-performance sports car.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 14 years since Porsche launched the first generation Panamera. Fast-forward to 2024, and this world-renowned sports car manufacturer has released the G3 (third generation) model, a superbly designed luxury saloon that has car enthusiasts slow clapping all over the world.
As Porsche moves toward an all-electric future, it has included new E-Hybrid powertrain models along with a plug-in hybrid option. Fortunately, for those who prefer their sports cars to be petrol-powered, the Panamera 4 and standard Panamera models are also available in the G3 range.
Thanks to the team at Porsche Centre Bahrain, FACT spent time with the brand’s latest masterpiece in the form of the standard Panamera, an auto experience we won’t soon forget.
Updated Exterior
Let’s not beat around the bush. This new release from Porsche is a thing of exquisite beauty.
Although the G3 retains the characteristic lines and proportions of the model line we have come to know and love, several fresh features in the exterior design endow this new sports saloon with an even more expressive and athletic appearance.
Staring at the vehicle head-on, we instantly recognised the car’s sharpened lines and the inclusion of an extra air intake situated above the number plate. This add-on is part of a larger air intake system, securing the additional air required by the drive systems. We also noticed that the wings have been enlarged and are now reminiscent of the iconic 911, providing the vehicle with an even sportier, high-performance look and feel. The contours of the bonnet are now more pronounced, further adding to the car’s powerful persona.
Porsche has also equipped its latest release with standard, steeper-looking, newly developed matrix LED headlights. The appearance of this new inclusion is characterised by four, threedimensional light modules that generate the characteristic Porsche four-point daytime driving lights. They have been arranged around the central bi-matrix module for dipped beam and matrix high beam. This means the headlights automatically control illumination of the road based on camera and navigation data, as well as vehicle speed. The system also uses the camera function to detect cars ahead and oncoming traffic.
Shifting to the flanks, we appreciated the redesigned window line that reinforces the saloon-like character of this four-door sports car. The outer edges are now flush with the contour of the body, creating a harmonious line at the rear of the vehicle. The 21-inch 911 Turbo Design wheels have also been included in the setup, enhancing the car’s sporty prowess.
From the back end, we appreciated the three-dimensional rear light, as well as the integrated Porsche logo that further accentuates the car’s dynamic look. A continuous light strip spans the entire rear, with two filigree arcs producing a distinctive light display. The frameless rear window provides a fresh, elegant look, while the sharper tearoff edges on the roof and adaptive extending spoiler endow the Panamera with a decisively cleaner and more athletic appearance.
Refined Interior Layout
The moment we entered the cabin, we were in awe of what
the masterminds at Porsche managed to accomplish in the new Panamera. The interior exudes a sense of absolute style, consisting of premium materials, delicate décor and a wealth of modern technical details. All this has been accomplished while placing the primary focus on operating efficiency and a dynamic driving experience.
We found the freshly designed seat surfaces to add to the high-quality, clean and sporty feel of the Panamera, with the front comfort seats providing 14-way electric adjustment and memory functionality.
From the front seating, we could take in the now steeply rising console and the decorative elements of the wide black panel that seamlessly combines the central display with the optional passenger display, into a single elegant unit. Another first in the G3 Panamera is the implemented ambient lighting present across the entire width of the dashboard.
Along with the attractive and comfortable nature of the Panamera, we had nothing but admiration for the Porsche Driver Experience Interior Concept of this latest generation. The designers have attained a perfect balance between digital and analogue controls, achieving optimum placement of primary controls and touchpoints for maximum efficiency and convenience.
Firstly, the gear selector has been moved away from the centre console and is now positioned to the right of the steering wheel, meaning both quicker access and more storage space in the cockpit. To add to the convenient layout, an easy access mode switch for the various driving options is within effortless reach. We also loved how the dual digital displays have been positioned. These include the 19.9-inch gauge cluster, complete with traditional Porsche dials and the centre touchscreen. A little lower down on the centre console, we discovered numerous touch-sensitive buttons allowing for simple access to the climate control functions. Additionally, our G3 Panamera test-drive model housed the optional 10.9-inch passenger-side display screen interface. This allowed easy access to the car’s infotainment system, as well as video streaming. We soon realised this high-quality display is not visible to the driver, meaning no dangerous distractions while on the road.
Highly Advanced Technology & Performance
As always, our favourite moment of the day was engaging the ignition. The roar that escaped the new Panamera as we revved the powerful 2.9-litre V6, twin-turbo engine was exactly what one wants to hear from a sports car. Grinning from ear to ear like little children, we made our way tentatively onto the tarmac.
Coupled with an eight-speed Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox, we knew we were operating an extremely potent machine. The expert engineers at Porsche have upgraded several elements, including the boost pressure, fuel injection rate and ignition timing to optimise the G3 Panamera’s performance. Generating 260kW of power and up to 500Nm of torque, the slightest touch of the accelerator launched us forward at an almost unsettling rate, leaving us hard-pressed against our seats.
The standard Panamera is capable of surging from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds and from 0-200km/h in 20.1 seconds. Add an electronically capped top speed of 272km/h to the equation and you have one beast of a car. These acceleration times are even quicker when Launch Control is engaged.
Knowing full well the power of their latest creation, the masterminds at Porsche have included a hugely impressive hydraulic dual-circuit brake system to ensure the driver has the means to tame this beautiful monster. Combined with an electric brake booster, an electric duo-servo parking brake (EPB), an auto hold function and a multi-collision brake, these highly effective additions meant we always felt we held the reigns over this abundance of horsepower.
As we put the G3 Panamera through its paces, we became keenly aware of the standard adaptive two-valve air suspension that includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and two-valve dampers. We found this inclusion ensured more body stability and handling – characteristics enhanced through the optional all-wheel steering.
The interior exudes a sense of absolute style, consisting of premium materials, delicate décor and a wealth of modern technical details.”
Superior Driver Assistance & Safety
As is expected from a Porsche, the new Panamera has been equipped with numerous driver assistance and safety systems to aid in the control of the vehicle and maximise the safety of occupants at all times.
The brand has included as standard, the Park Assist system, a reversing camera and a Lane Keeping Assist system. A host of additional assistance systems with an increased range of functions are also available as optional extras.
Our Verdict
The G3 Panamera is nothing less than a motor vehicle masterpiece. Effortlessly combining beauty, comfort, functionality, power and performance, Porsche has accomplished near perfection with this latest offering. ✤

SMALL BUT MIGHTY
FACT spent the day in Volvo’s new small electric SUV – EX30, that offers cutting-edge technology and Volvo quality at a great price.
Since their founding in 1927, Volvo have gone on to become one of the most well-known and respected automotive brands in the world and they are highly regarded for their competence in safety, design (incorporating their Swedish heritage) and performance.
This month, thanks to the team at Volvo Bahrain, FACT got behind the wheel of the brand’s first fully electric small premium SUV, the 2025 Volvo EX30.
Dynamic Exterior
The first thing we noticed as the car came into our view was that despite it being the smallest SUV in Volvo’s lineup, the EX30 is a unique creation that exudes performance-inspired styling from every angle. Designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo to date, the EX30 efficiently uses renewable and recycled materials for around 25% of all aluminium and 17% of all steel and plastics components of the exterior. The car follows a Scandinavian design language with clean bold lines that’re complemented by a robust stance. At the front, the deftly sculpted bonnet flows neatly into the large blank grille that is strikingly punctuated with the Volvo emblem. While other familiar Volvo design elements, such as the Thor’s Hammer shaped LED headlights, help frame the confident face of the car. At the flanks, the athletic stance of the vehicle is underscored by bold lines and 19-inch wheels with a stylish glossy black finish. A wide panoramic glass sunroof interlocks with the compact SUV’s pillars contributing to the EX30’s eye-catching appearance. The
well-balanced proportions continue at the back with C-shaped, stacked LED tail lights completing the rear look.
Progressive Interior
Shifting our collective attention to the interior, as we got inside the EX30, we were immediately struck by the elegant, minimal but very modern design of the cabin, which takes its inspiration from Scandinavian nature. Additionally, the model’s interior also uses recycled materials such as woven flax, upcycled denim, ground plastic and blended wool in various aspects like the doors, dashboard, seats, etc., for a greener footprint and a unique look. The front seats were uber comfortable, electrically adjustable sport seats with four-way lumbar support and a convenient memory function, the upholstery was in Nordico –a technically advanced material created from recycled textiles. There was sufficient head, shoulder and leg room for both front and rear seats. Once seated, we appreciated the ergonomic squared design of the steering wheel which had plenty of switches for driver controls and also housed the gear selector. Adding to the practical storage solutions and further using the cabin’s space effectively – the glovebox is relocated to the centre of the dashboard under the main screen, and the centre armrest now also houses the window controls and a sleek sliding cup holder. The large panoramic glass roof allowed for sunlight to stream into the cabin making the interior feel bright and spacious and the luggage compartment offers 318 litres of space, that’s large enough for a few carry-on suitcases, this can be increased when the split rear seats are folded.
Advanced Infotainment & Technology
For the first time in our experience and as a bold choice, the EX30 opts to forgo the instrument cluster from behind the steering wheel and instead combines it into the main central display. The single vertically oriented 12.3-inch screen serves as both the infotainment and gauge display. It manages to proficiently display at-a-glance driver information and all control features on one screen, which took some getting used to but eventually proved convenient. This intentional setup plays into the minimal and elegant aesthetic of the overall space, which is enhanced by the five wonderful ambient lighting and sound themes that evoke different moods from Scandinavian landscapes. Also, the touchscreen delivers highdefinition visuals and, most importantly, has a highly customisable fuss-free interface. Adding another layer of convenience were the Google apps and services that were built-in for the EX30. We were able to download apps from Google Play and use them alongside various other functions hands-free thanks to Google Voice Assistant. The system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay. Additionally, Volvo installed a Harman Kardon premium soundbar across the base of the dashboard rather than individual speakers throughout the vehicle, which was a nice touch.
Power, Performance & Safety
As with every vehicle we inspect, getting out on the road was our favourite part of the experience. First off, the EX30 has a convenient keyless entry and was ready to go once seated without having to press any buttons. We were fortunate enough to drive the EX30 Single Motor Extended Range variant. Its capable rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup produces 200kW of power with 343Nm of torque, allowing us to surge from 0-100km/h in a quick 3.6 seconds, that translates into a top speed of around 180km/h. As we further tested the nuances of the vehicle, we were left impressed with its great handling, proficient cornering and the keenly responsive braking that complements the powerful acceleration. Volvo have also stated that this EX30 variant, when fully charged, delivers a range of around 476km. The fast-charging public stations can charge 10% to 80% in a little over 25 minutes.
Like every Volvo, the EX30 is big on safety and in turn is properly fashioned with a full suite of safety and driver assistance features. It’s equipped with a door opening alert – one of several features of the Safe Space Technology – a new advanced driver alert system and much more.
Our Verdict
The Volvo EX30 is a superb compact electric SUV with impressive range and strong cutting-edge tech features combined with Volvo quality, safety and design, that’s provided at an accessible price. ✤

The K Hotel’s newly appointed Director of Operations talks about navigating the ever-changing hospitality landscape, the property’s new offerings and his management style.
Congratulations on your exciting new position at The K Hotel. What does the role entail and what are you looking forward to the most?
I am thrilled to take on this exciting new role. My responsibilities will encompass the overall management of the hotel's key departments, including rooms, food and beverage (F&B), health and wellness facilities and daily property maintenance. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to lead a talented team of passionate hospitality professionals and work towards enhancing the hotel's position as a premier destination in Bahrain. My primary focus will be on driving operational efficiency, fostering a collaborative work culture and ensuring our guests receive an unparalleled experience during their stay.
You're a seasoned hotelier and have more than 18 years of experience in the hospitality industry. What unique expertise do you bring to your new role?
I have had the privilege of working in diverse markets, including India, the UAE and Bahrain. This extensive global exposure has given me a deep, nuanced understanding of the hospitality industry, particularly in the realm of F&B operations. I am confident that this expertise will be instrumental in my new role, as I work to align the various departments and cultivate a servicedriven work culture. In addition, my focus on developing robust systems and processes will be invaluable in ensuring the hotel's operations remain consistent and adaptable, positioning The K Hotel as a leading hospitality destination in the Kingdom.
How do you feel the hospitality industry has changed over the years and how have you adapted to it?
As the saying goes, ‘Change is the only constant’ and this is particularly true in the hospitality industry. I have witnessed it undergo significant transformation in recent years, driven by evolving consumer expectations and technological advancements. There has been a clear shift towards personalised, immersive guest experiences. Today's travellers seek more than just a room – they desire tailored, memorable encounters that cater to their individual preferences. To adapt, we have had to become more agile, data-driven and digitally focused. Leveraging technology, we can now anticipate and exceed guest needs, offering seamless service and enhanced convenience. At the same time, we have had to balance innovation with maintaining the personal touch that defines great hospitality. By empowering our teams, embracing sustainable practices and constantly innovating, we have been able to deliver exceptional experiences that keep guests coming back.
You have an impressive food and beverage background. Can we expect to see some changes in The K Hotel's culinary offerings?
Absolutely. I am eager to leverage my expertise to elevate the hotel’s culinary offerings. While maintaining the excellence of our existing outlets, I'm excited to introduce new concepts.
We are developing a Grab-and-Go option at K Cafe, featuring artisanal snacks and ready-to-eat meals to cater to evolving guest preferences. Additionally, we are revamping our banquet and outdoor catering menus to offer an even wider array of culinary experiences. We also have exciting poolside events in the pipeline that will diversify our F&B portfolio and cement the hotel’s reputation as a premier dining destination. I am thrilled to work with our talented culinary team to create unforgettable gastronomic experiences.
Your motto is 'Be the change that you want to see'. How do you incorporate this in your operational management style?
My management style is guided by the principle of being the change I wish to see in my team and the organisation. I firmly believe in fostering an inclusive work environment where open communication, cultural intelligence and bias awareness are prioritised. Through leading by example and establishing a social connection with both internal and external stakeholders, I aim to inspire my team to adopt a similar mindset, ultimately creating a cohesive and efficient workforce where everyone feels empowered to contribute and excel. After all, a leader's effectiveness is directly tied to the team they've cultivated and empowered. Through this approach, I strive to drive positive change within the organisation and set the tone for a collaborative, high-performing culture at The K Hotel. ✤
Antoine Doumet
Director of Food and Beverage, Royal Golf Club Bahrain
How have you adapted your management style from hospitality food and beverage (F&B) operations to a sporting facility like the Royal Golf Club?
Transitioning from hospitality F&B operations to a sporting facility required adapting my management style while maintaining core principles. While the focus remains on exceptional customer service and unique culinary experiences, the key shift lies in understanding the specific needs and dynamics of a sporting environment. At the Royal Golf Club, I have tailored my approach to cater to the preferences of golf enthusiasts, ensuring that our offerings enhance their overall experience. Emphasising personalised services for our members and guests and innovative dining options have been instrumental in creating a seamless transition.
Can you share a specific achievement or award that you are particularly proud of in your career?
I’m proud to share that the Royal Golf Club hosted the DP World Tour (Bahrain Championship) this February. The event was held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and was significant as it marked the DP World Tour's return to the Kingdom for the first time since 2011. Additionally, hosting the 7th BNP Paribas Bahrain Jazz Fest at the Royal Golf Club was a memorable moment. It was an honour for the club to be the chosen venue for this beloved international music festival and a proud addition to the national events calendar of the Kingdom. The attendance of thousands of people made it a truly special and rewarding experience for us.
What advice would you give to someone new to Bahrain who wants to explore its culinary scene?
As a newcomer to Bahrain eager to explore its culinary scene, my advice would be to embrace the diverse flavours and cultural influences that make up the local cuisine. Start by sampling traditional Bahraini dishes. Be sure to also indulge in the tantalising array of Middle Eastern and international cuisine available throughout the country. Explore local markets and food festivals to discover hidden gems and engage with the vibrant food culture. Above all, be openminded, adventurous and willing to try new flavours and experiences to fully immerse yourself in Bahrain's rich culinary landscape.
CULINARY BALANCING ACT
The Westin and Le Méridien City Centre Bahrain’s Complex Executive Chef, Mohammad Issa Ibrahim Ali, gives a glimpse into his busy daily routine and shares his culinary accomplishments and his favourite ingredient.
Welcome to Bahrain and congratulations on your new position. You have an all-encompassing role of overseeing various outlets and leading a team of 60 chefs. Can you tell us what your average day looks like?
As Complex Executive Chef of two hotels, my day is dynamic and demanding. I need to balance my creative, managerial and operational tasks to ensure a seamless and high-quality dining experience. My day often starts early, around 7am or 8am. I review all the daily orders and deliver them to ensure everything has arrived and is of good quality, as well as conduct a morning briefing with the kitchen staff, outlining the day's tasks, specials and any important information. I also participate in the cooking process, especially for complex or signature dishes, and ensure they meet the restaurant's standards. Then at 6pm, I start planning for the next day's service, including any special orders or events.
You've won several accolades, including hospitality awards and international culinary competitions. Which of these are you most proud of and what makes it special?
Yes, I’ve received many medals from Gulfood, UAE, and I won the Best Chef of the Year 2019 at the Hospitality Excellence Awards in the UAE. In 2019, I also participated in a halal food competition in Istanbul and won two gold medals. I was very proud of this achievement because I was representing my country, Jordan, at the event.
What's your favourite ingredient to work with and why?
I like fresh produce; it gives a strong flavour to any dish. I like fish as well – it always tastes good when it is fresh.
What is your signature dish and what makes it special?
My signature dish is Beef Cheek with Scalloped Potatoes. It’s special because the dish requires a unique cooking technique and takes more than eight hours to cook in a sous vide machine. ✤
FLAVOURS OF THE ORIENT
Indulging in authentic Asian cuisine, Apple Sharma embarked on a culinary journey to rediscover popular favourites and try out new dishes on the menu at BO.SABI.
Afirm favourite of many on the island, BO.SABI at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa is the award-winning restaurant famed for its Pan-Asian cuisine. It had been a while since my last visit, so I was only too eager to re-experience it with my colleague, as we headed over for a mid-week lunch. As we walked in, a sense of serenity washed over me – perhaps it was the ambience or the warm greetings of the lovely Restaurant Assistant Manager, Jeno Pandit, and the ever-friendly Khyrul, who attended to us.
The interior, boasting a vibrant setting, immediately transported me to the heart of East and Southeast Asia. The décor is a blend of traditional and contemporary elements, featuring high-pointed ceilings made of wooden beams and thatched reed panels, evoking the essence of Asian architecture.
Bamboo accents are everywhere, with simple yet comfortable seating imparting a rustic, cosy feel. The large, dome-shaped ceiling lights and under-lighting on the steps cast a warm glow, creating an inviting atmosphere perfect for casual lunches, dinners or special celebrations.
The spacious main area houses a well-stocked bar in one corner, with the opposite wall depicting a typical Asian city scene, while a striking BO.SABI sign shines brightly on the main wall behind a raised platform for live music.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pool, combined with the relaxed vibe and Oriental background music, made us feel we were on a mini-vacation. As soon as we took our seats, Khyrul presented us with a couple of refreshing mocktails, just what we needed to quench our thirst on a scorching hot afternoon. The Fish Berry – a blend of ginger beverage and fresh mixed berries – was a standout. The classic Pina Colada, with its creamy coconut and pineapple concoction, was equally delightful and set a refreshing tone for our meal.
Our dishes were prepared by Sous Chef Mohan Gurung and Executive Chef Younis Ramadhan. A quick glance at the menu and we knew we were in for a treat with the huge variety of dishes on offer, from classic favourites to signature creations and new additions. Our journey began with the Salmon Crab Salad, a light medley of crab meat, salmon, avocado, cucumber and lettuce, topped with vine tomato and green scallion. The flavours were perfectly balanced, providing a refreshing start. The Crispy Dynamite Roll, one our favourites, was visually stunning. The chilli on top had my colleague cautious of the spice level but also adventurous to try something new. Surprisingly, its crunchy exterior, combined with tuna, avocado and spicy sriracha mayo, delivered a gradual, lingering heat that tantalised the palate.
Equally impressive was the Crispy Crazy Crab Roll. Coated in crispy tanuki and filled with crab meat, smoked salmon and avocado, each bite offered a satisfying crunch, with the spicy mayo providing a subtle kick. The Philadelphia Ebi Mango Roll was a colourful combination of smoked salmon, shrimp and Alfonso mango, creating a unique blend of salty and sweet tastes that we had never tried before.
Moving on to soups and starters, the Laksa Soup, featuring egg noodles, poached lobster and a comforting coconut broth, felt like a warm hug – an ideal dish for any season. The Takoyaki, traditional
shrimp and octopus stuffed balls, brought back memories of a fun-filled trip to Dubai, while the signature Steamed Crystal Dumpling Prawn offered a simple yet flavourful experience with its trio of dipping sauces. Next up was Szechuan Shrimp, featuring perfectly textured shrimp wontons that came with a bold, hot and sour vinegar and a hint of spice. Meanwhile, the classic Peking Duck was beautifully presented with perfectly tender carved duck slices, served with hoisin sauce, cucumber, leek, plum sauce and wrapped in flaky pancakes, ideal for sharing.
The main courses continued to impress, starting with the Korean Spicy Short Ribs. These tender beef ribs, marinated in a gingersoy barbecue sauce, were a meat lover’s dream, perfectly complemented by subtle fried rice. The Lobster Chow Fun, with its visually stunning presentation, was as much ‘fun’ to eat as it was to look at, combining stir-fried lobster with scallions, shiitake mushrooms and a spicy XO sauce.
The Malaysian Fish Curry, served with fragrant steamed rice, was a highlight with its creamy coconut sauce, tangy tamarind and tender hamour, staying true to the exotic flavours of Malaysian cuisine. I also tried the vegetarian version, which was equally delicious. The Nasi Goreng, a signature dish, was a meal in itself – a delightful combination of wok-fried rice, shrimp, chicken and sweet soy tamarind, topped with a perfectly round fried egg and accompanied by chicken satay and prawn crackers. Lastly, we were treated to two exquisite desserts. The Mango Rice Pudding, a clean and humble dish, featured fresh, juicy mango pieces that wonderfully complemented the mildly sweet rice pudding. Meanwhile, the Japanese Cheesecake with Plum
Sauce was light and indulgent. Its sponge-like cake base, circled in a thin white chocolate shell and topped with silky smooth coconut cream, was perfectly balanced by the fresh plum sauce – a decadent ending to our feast.
If I had to choose one of the few Asian restaurants in Bahrain that evoke an authentic experience, BO.SABI would have to be among my top picks, excelling in every area, from ambience to flavour to service. If you want to truly savour traditional Pan-Asian cuisine in an elegant and vibrant setting, then BO.SABI is a must-visit. ✤

BUON APPETITO!
Explore Italy's vibrant flavours with Bushra Hakim at L'ORTO, discovering the extraordinary in every simple dish.
Italy's magnetic allure captivates anyone who has wandered its cobblestoned streets and relished its culinary treasures. Once tantalised by authentic Italian cuisine, the craving becomes insatiable. The secret lies in its simplicity — few but fresh ingredients. In my quest for authenticity, I discovered L’ORTO, an unmissable gem in Block 338, renowned for its exquisite Italian fare.
Stepping into the restaurant, I was greeted by a bright, spacious interior that catered to every preference. Whether you favour the airy courtyard or a snug family table, the contemporary design with its warm earthy tones and rustic wooden accents creates a cosy yet stylish setting. Classic Italian melodies softly playing in the background enhance the intimate ambience, setting the stage for a remarkable dining experience.
I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Antonio Camilli, the charismatic new Executive Chef, whose creations promised to captivate my senses. With over a decade of experience spanning London’s bustling kitchens and Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe and Australia, Chef Antonio brings a blend of innovation and tradition to Bahrain. His commitment to the finest ingredients and his creative spirit are set to usher L’ORTO into an exciting new chapter.
The journey began with the Asparagi, featuring grilled asparagus with earthy, smoky notes, complemented by the creamy tang of homemade ricotta and the rich, salty hint of cured egg yolk. The harmonious combination of textures and flavours was a great start to what was to come.
The Carpaccio di Filetto was a revelation. The chilled, thinly
sliced fillet was tender and succulent, perfectly balanced by the sharpness of mustard crema, the nutty, savoury essence of Parmigiano flakes and the peppery bite of wild rocket, all brought together with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. The dish was an elegant play on traditional carpaccio, yet elevated.
The Tuna Cutlet is what truly stood out — a departure from the classic, it boasted impeccably rare tuna encased in a crispy fried coating, offering a surprising juxtaposition of textures. Accompanying the cutlet was a delectable squid ink mayo. Its creaminess complemented the delicate taste of the tuna really well. The addition of sun-dried tomatoes lent a subtle sweetness, while the herbs infused the dish with fragrance. Whether savoured solo or shared, it's a plate of pure indulgence, simply meant to be enjoyed to the fullest.
For the mains, I began with Baccalà alla Mediterranea, a sublime blend of rich, savoury notes. The cod fish was tender and flaky, beautifully paired with the briny intensity of black olives, grated so finely over the top that I wondered what the intriguing taste could be. The aromatic freshness of mint and the subtle herbal notes of bay leaf added layers of complexity. All of this was enveloped in a robust Mediterranean sauce with olive oil, tying the dish together seamlessly.
Then arrived the star of the show: the Tagliolino e Bottarga, brought in proudly by the chef himself. This signature dish featured fresh tagliolini pasta, cooked to al dente perfection. The smoky butter lent a luxurious richness to the preparation, while the chives provided a subtle, refreshing note. However, it was the bottarga that stole the spotlight, imparting salty and savoury
umami flavours that lingered, enticing with each bite. A dish so simple yet bursting with a myriad of taste profiles.
To conclude the main course, I devoured the Burrata Pizza, a delightful fusion of tastes and textures. Its crispy sourdough crust added a satisfying crunch, complementing the creamy mozzarella and burrata perfectly. Tangy tomatoes and fragrant basil completed the ensemble, creating an irresistible medley of freshness and creaminess.
For dessert, the Torta Basca was a lovely surprise. This Basque cheesecake was a flawless creation, unlike any I've ever tasted. Its rich and luscious texture, coupled with a slight caramelised crust, was a testament to perfection, baked just right! The sauce of lacto-fermented strawberries and Moroccan lemon provided a unique tanginess and zesty finish. I highly recommend indulging in this masterpiece.
The Crêpes Suzette was a gastronomic marvel, a delicate dance of flavours that was both delightful and surprising. Each velvety crêpe was adorned with a decadent drizzle of caramel, infusing every mouthful with a buttery sweetness that lingered delightfully. The addition of fresh oranges lent a burst of citrus brightness, harmonising beautifully with the caramel sauce. Enhanced by luscious chocolate syrup and a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream, it concluded the meal on a high note.
As the feast came to a close, the impact of Chef Antonio's artistry became clear. Each dish told a story of passion and expertise, elevating my dining experience to new heights. The journey through L’ORTO’s menu was a celebration of Italian culinary heritage. Meticulously crafted for the modern palate, every
course redefined what this cuisine could be in Bahrain. Grazie mille Chef Antonio for a meal that transcended the ordinary and left a lasting impression! ✤

CALLING ALL CARNIVORES!
Located in Janabiya’s trendy District 1 Mall is one of the most popular steakhouses on the island, a well-known purveyor of high-quality prime cuts –
The Don Steak House.
On arrival, my dining partners and I were quickly taken with the restaurant’s charmingly casual and inviting ambience. Despite being quite busy, it didn’t take long before we were cordially greeted by Restaurant Manager Chelsea Salazar, who promptly helped us get seated and then enthusiastically gave us details about the impressive selection of meats on offer. While seated, I noticed that the wall on the right had stylishly blacked-out silhouettes of bulls that were cleverly backlit in a manner that made them seemingly pop out. But what truly caught my attention was the wall on the left, emblazoned in big bold letters were – MEAT, FIRE. Two simple words, but the only two that truly matter to any steakhouse worth its salt. The Don Steak House has its priorities right, and I confidently knew we were in good hands for the evening.
To start, we tried the Beetroot Carpaccio from the salad menu. Taking inspiration from the original meaty counterpart, here steamed beets are cut into delicate thin slices and dusted with crumbles of feta. The briny, tangy and salty cheese finely complemented the earthy sweetness of the beetroot, while the accompanying balsamic vinegar dressing provided the ideal final touch. Next up was the first delightful meat preparation of the meal, the Don Beef Chow Chow. Skewers of grilled tenderloin cubes seasoned fabulously and basted with the Don special sauce got us off the mark and put a smile on our faces. Served with a
flaming hibachi for us to further grill as per our own choosing, this came in handy and was more useful than just a table gimmick. Then came the Don Wagyu Kebab, seasoned Wagyu mince wrapped in a thin casing of lamb fat and grilled ever so perfectly. I’ve had plenty of kebabs in my time, few this lavish and full of flavour. It was served with a velvety sour cream and garlic dip that we thoroughly savoured.
For the final appetiser, our plates were graced with the Heaven Tenderloin Bites. Thick slices of soft baguette, lightly buttered and toasted to a nice golden brown, were smeared with a cream sauce and finally topped with even thicker slices of delicious Angus tenderloin, which was then covered in herbaceous chimichurri sauce with hints of spice. This one’s a must try, since soon after the final bite I was immediately tempted to order another round!
To complement the food, we called for a round of mocktails; I opted for a lovely Ginger Lime concoction that offered a refreshing and tangy kick.
The mains showed up shortly thereafter, kicking off this course with the Beef Cheek Wagyu. As the name suggests, this speciality cut involves the cheek muscle which is known for being very tough to prepare. But when plied with the right cooking method (in this case, patiently slow-cooked for hours), the tissue breaks down to reveal an exceedingly succulent and melt-in-your-mouth texture that we couldn’t get enough of. It was served with a dip of sweet, smoky and tangy barbecue sauce alongside fresh brioche buns. We next tried the Wagyu Skewer; thick-cut cubes of striploin were grilled to a stunning sizzle and served along with a side
of salad, garlic sauce and flatbreads to form the perfect morsel when rolled-up together.
Then came time for the final stretch comprising some of The Don’s best and most popular offerings. First up was the 220g of luxury cut tenderloin Wagyu (or filet mignon if we’re being all fancy about it). Offering a very minimal amount of fat, this cut has a firm texture with a lustrous red colour and some serious umami flavour. Each bite of our medium rare cut went down a satisfyingly tender treat, with the accompanying peppercorn sauce and mashed potatoes adding that little extra oomph.
This was closely followed by 300g of Ribeye Wagyu, a cut that’s densely marbled and highly rated on the grading scale. Seared and cooked to our preferred temperature of medium-rare, each bite boasted an abundance of succulence and flavour. It was served with a hearty portion of crisp French fries and a side of indulgent mushroom sauce.
Last but definitely not least, came the 1.2kg Wagyu Tomahawk, aptly titled ‘King of all Meats’. Impressively flambéed at our table for a ravishing visual spectacle, the massive serving was truly a magnificent sight to behold. Cooked to perfection, with an exquisitely seared char on the outside and a tender interior oozing with juices and buttery goodness, every bite we took melted in our mouths! On the side, the mushroom sauce, peppercorn sauce and baked potato were great accompaniments. To finish, we shared a decadent molten chocolate cake paired with a luscious velvety smooth vanilla ice cream that provided an exceedingly gratifying end to a fabulous meal. ✤

BEAT THE HEAT!
As the temperature steadily rises, there’s only so much an air-conditioner can do for you. Sometimes it’s just best to do yourself a favour and leave the heat behind, even if just for a bit!
Whether seeking adventure, cultural exploration or just relaxation, a refreshing vacation to preferably a cooler place might just be your best bet for a much-needed escape from the excessive heat.
Here are a few places that we’d recommend:
Oslo, Norway
Whether cloaked in snow or bathed in midnight sun (the sun doesn’t actually set here from end of May until late July), there are few places across the globe that are as innately beautiful as Norway. From the soaring mountains to the bright blue glacier lakes, breathtaking fjords, large dense forests and more, the Norwegian landscape is uniquely unparalleled. And sitting on the southern coast at the head of the Oslo Fjord is the country’s capital and largest city, Oslo, which exceptionally combines forest landscapes with high-end architecture and landmarks. Although June, July and August are summer here, the temperatures average between 13°C and 25°C and it's the perfect time for travellers to pay a visit. The Oslo Opera House, one of Scandinavia’s most iconic modern buildings, has a structure resembling an iceberg rising from the water and its terrace
boasts fantastic views of the city and the fjord at sundown. Check out Vigeland Park – the world’s largest sculpture park showcasing works by a single artist. Then take a trip to the Bygdøy, a peninsula with some of Oslo’s most popular hiking trails, beaches and museums, including the Fram Museum and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. Make sure to visit a floating outdoor sauna along the harbour where you first heat up and then finish with a refreshing plunge right there in the fjord. And finally, you have to hit the water in a kayak or take a truly awe-inspiring cruise experience exploring the fjords.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Boasting a vibrant culture, rich history, an ingeniously elaborate canal system that’s stood the test of time and more, Amsterdam is truly one of the most beautiful and famous cities in the world. Rife with artistic heritage, gabled facades, canals criss-crossed by stone and steel arched bridges, Mediaeval churches and antiquated market squares, the Netherlands’ charming capital is among the best-preserved 17th-century cities in Europe and genuinely worth the visit. With the weather at its pleasant best between May and August, now would be an ideal time to book your tickets. Cycling is a way of life here and the best way to get around since the city is equipped with an elaborate network of cycle paths. So rent a bike and ride out exploring! Spend time at the world-class Rijksmuseum or get lost for hours appreciating the stunning works at the Van Gogh Museum. The city is home to 165 waterways, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Canal Ring Area that dates back to the 17th century; it would be amiss not to take a canal cruise and admire the city from a different laid-back perspective. Catch some of the best touring musical acts from around the world at massive Ziggo Dome or the iconic Paradiso. Then get tickets and catch the local football club AFC Ajax in action at the Johan Cruyff Arena. But most importantly, don’t forget to take timely breaks enjoying the vast variety of delicious food and just wandering through the city’s various parks, amongst which, the sprawling and lush Vondelpark is an absolute must-visit.
Salalah, Oman
Nestled in the southern region of Oman and offering a compelling retreat from the scorching desert heat and urban bustle typically associated with the Middle East, is Salalah, the third largest city in the Sultanate. Unlike the arid landscapes prevalent in much of Oman, Salalah presents a lush, green contrast, especially during Khareef (autumn in Arabic) – the monsoon season in Oman taking place from June to early September. This period, marked by cooler temperatures and gentle rains, transforms Salalah into a verdant paradise that attracts both regional travellers seeking respite from the heat and international tourists exploring the region. But Salalah’s appeal lies not only in its climatic anomaly but also in its diverse natural landscapes. Travellers can visit the long stretches of pristine
beaches flanked by rugged cliffs and tropical forests, where you’d be surprised to find plenty of tropical and subtropical fruits like coconuts, bananas, papayas and more. Nature lovers must visit the natural wonder that’s located in the Dhofar mountains – Wadi Darbat. Beautiful and scenic, it boasts lush greenery, tranquil pools and a stunning waterfall, yes you heard right, a waterfall in the Middle East! It flows heavily, especially during the monsoon season, so be sure to visit here. A diverse range of wildlife, including birds, mammals and reptiles can also be found. Without a doubt, the boat ride along the natural canal at Wadi Darbat is an absolute must-do activity. For history buffs, Salalah presents a treasure trove of archaeological wonders and cultural heritage sites. The ancient port city of Sumhuram and Al Baleed, with its well-preserved ruins, provide insights into Oman's maritime history. Frankincense was shipped to Africa, Europe, India, China and other parts of world from here. The Museum of the Frankincense Land chronicles the significance of this aromatic resin in the region’s historical trade routes. The grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque stands as a testament to contemporary Omani architecture and religious devotion. Also, take time to experience the local cuisine at vibrant souqs, rummage for traditional handicrafts or simply relax on the tranquil shores of the various beautiful beaches. The unique blend of temperate climate, stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage makes visiting any of the above mentioned places an ideal break.✤
SHARP STITCHING AND SUMMER HUES
The latest men’s and women’s collections from Italian house Brunello Cucinelli boast ethereal pieces in pale colours to catch the essence of summer, coupled with stand-out darker pieces that will take you effortlessly from day to night.
In the women’s collection, equilibrium is key, seen in the balance between opposing forces – minimal and ornate, aesthetics and functionality. Garments that are pure and simple and those that are special are brought together with a sense of timeless style.
Sartorial quality offers a fundamental reference point for contemporary balance, expressing an apparent simplicity, a refined effortlessness. Beyond the confines of blazers and suits that are at the heart of the collection, the sartorial interpretation also spreads to outerwear, where drawstrings and hoods give way to trench coats, raincoats and overcoats with a timeless flair. The tidy appeal of matching sets is extended to biker jackets, shirts and utility jackets combined with skirts, trousers and shorts.
Key colours are milky white, sand, rope and quartz greys, hay and concrete alongside interventions of dark brown and black.
The quest for elegance is at the heart of the menswear collection which features fresh colours, soft volumes, carefully balanced garments, paisley patterns and details inspired by the French Riviera.
Unique natural textures, délavé and slub effects enhance the summery colours, which pair with timeless neutrals to create a new and intense balance. Pink, raspberry, turquoise and mauve not only influence the patterns on shirts and tees but also add refined accents to chic elegance, always offset by the unique textural effects of the fabrics. Layered greys and blues in varied shades convey a sense of refinement and sophistication.
Fabrics and leathers have been chosen for their lightness
and comfort, while softer fits in tees and knits sit alongside slightly lengthened blazers and loose, fluid trenches for easy-to-wear style.
The quality of the materials and craftsmanship transfers the season's guiding principles to the accessories line, which aims to offer contemporary elegance at the service of a distinctive personality. ✤

Need to Know:
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama series that’s a prequel to Game of Thrones. The latest season continues the story of the civil war amongst House Targaryen.
Creators: George R. R. Martin, Ryan Condal Cast: Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Rhys Ifans, Olivia Cooke, Tom Glynn-Carney, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best
Why Is It Worth Watching?
Based on parts of George R. R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood, the series’ events take place around 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest and nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones
Following the death of King Viserys, the rightful heir, his daughter Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) from his first wife, is set to take the throne. But on his deathbed, his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), mishears his final words and chooses to believe the king had a change of heart and instead picked their first-born son to succeed the throne. Her misgivings are further emboldened by her megalomaniac father, Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans).
Any hopes of peacefully resolving the decision for the next rightful successor to the throne is thrown out of the window when Queen Rhaenyra’s son is brutally murdered by Queen Alicent’s son and his dragon. The lines are drawn, as various ruling houses are forced to pick sides and prepare to face off in a Targaryen civil war against the newly crowned Aegon II, Rhaenyra's halfbrother. Also, there are over a dozen dragons involved in this war!

X-Men '97 is an American animated series based on the Marvel Comics superhero team called the X-Men. The show is a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997) and continues the story of the X-Men who face new challenges following the loss of their leader, Professor X.
Creator: Beau DeMayo Cast : Matthew Waterson, George Buza, Cal Dodd, Ray Chase, Lenore Zann, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Isaac Robinson-Smith
Why Is It Worth Watching?
X-Men ‘97 is the direct continuation of the beloved animated series from the '90s, widely recognised as the spark that eventually set off the explosion of superhero movies from the early 2000s onwards.
In this universe, mutants are people born with superhuman abilities that do their best to coexist alongside humans in a highly hostile world. The X-Men are a team of mutant superheroes brought together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect themselves and humans alike. At the end of the original show, Professor Xavier is killed in an assassination, which leaves the X-Men in disarray.
X-Men ‘97 takes place a year later and sees the team facing new challenges and through unexpected circumstances falling under the leadership of their former adversary, Magneto. The show continues the action-packed sci-fi madness of the original offering in a brilliantly written new storyline that’s brought to life by the interesting, morally complex and deeply flawed characters that made us all fans of the show decades ago.
Also, familiar names from the original series reprise their voice acting roles. Nostalgia never looked so good!

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER, SUSPENSE
Like Mother, Like Daughter
By Kimberley McCreight
Why Lawd?
By Charli XCX
Charli XCX has been one of pop music’s leading innovators for over a decade now, and the English singer shows no signs of slowing down on her sixth studio album titled Brat
The album’s pop sound blends influences from her youthful rave music days and her recent ventures into experimental sounds. It interestingly juxtaposes a bold, assertive demeanour against sincerely tender and vulnerable moments.
On the opener, 360, the perfectly pitched synth bass jumpstarts the album with a driving melody that has Charli at her jubilant and braggadocious best.
The intense and vivid energy on the follow up, Club classics, is infectious and the sentiment is further boosted with Charli’s straightforward lyrics and recurrent refrain on the chorus. The piercing synth drum beat on the excellent Sympathy is a knife highlights Charli dealing with feelings of spiralling over an acquaintance who taps her insecurities. On I might say something stupid, she reveals her feelings of uncertainty in the music industry over soft piano chords but returns to her cheeky and bratty best on Von Dutch as she sings, “It’s okay to just admit that you’re jealous of me,” to whomever it may concern.
By NxWorries
Under the banner NxWorries the duo, Anderson .Paak and producer Knxwledge, coalesce forces once again for their latest studio album, Why Lawd?, a follow up to their 2016 debut, Yes Lawd!
Heartache, regret and hopefulness take centre stage as the overarching theme for the project, since it deals with Anderson’s separation from his wife of 13 years.
The album opens with Dave Chappelle narrating reflective anecdotes on ThankU Which then, ever so smoothly, transitions into one of the best tracks on the album with 86Sentra. Anderson flows confidently but composed over a thumping 90s’ G-funk beat that’s guaranteed to get your head-nodding.
Another tight transition into MoveOn keeps the ball rolling satisfyingly. The inimitable Thundercat guests on KeepHer, while Anderson is clearly in his feels (reminiscent, regretful and quick to pass the blame) on this one and the next track, Distractions. Where I Go (feat H.E.R) is another clear highpoint with both artists offering excellent vocal performances. Anderson shows up pensive, reflective and accepting of his faults.
Regardless, throughout the project Knxwledge keeps conjuring a heady mix of soulful harmonies over laid-back hip-hop beats and old funk samples that provide the perfect backdrop to Anderson’s intimate confessions.
The latest offering from this New York Times bestselling author tells of a daughter’s quest to uncover her mother’s secret life in the wake of her disappearance. When student Cleo arrives late for dinner at her childhood home, she finds food burning in the oven and no sign of her mother, Kat. Then Cleo finds her mum’s bloody shoe under the sofa. Something terrible has happened.
Kat is a corporate lawyer and Cleo soon realises that, prior to her disappearance, her mother had been making some disturbing discoveries.

What We’re (Still) Talking About
Heavenly Plot
There was much amusement in the FACT office when one of our colleagues got a notification about a church in Mexico (or Spain/Portugal depending on which version you read) selling plots of land in heaven at USD100 per square metre – cheap at twice the price if you ask us, especially since the average land price in Manhattan, New York, is several times that. One report even asserted that the pastor claimed to have spoken to God back in 2017 – presumably to confirm his appointment as celestial realtor. Another said the church had raked in millions of dollars!
Incredulity was the order of the day, followed by comments along the lines of “Well, I knew you could gain residency in some countries by buying a passport but…” and “So, now you can literally buy your way into heaven?” Swiftly followed by “Anyone that would fall for that deserves to lose their money.”
Alas, a quick Google search soon revealed that the news came from a satirical Evangelical church that mocks grifting pastors. Shame, we were looking forward to confidently climbing that much vaunted stairway.
That’s Fashion Equally Danish
The vagaries of fashion never cease to amaze. Just this week, colleagues on our sister mag OHLALA were jolly excited about a collaboration between a rather posh handbag brand and the makers of a certain popular sweetie – the result being production of a special pouch to hold said candy which can, of course, be attached to the handbag to show the world how trendy the wearer is. This news brought to mind a few other gems of fashion nonsense, such as the Balenciaga’s literal Trash Bag –made of calfskin leather, retailing at
more than USD2,000 and looking exactly like its namesake. (And don’t get us started on the brand’s IKEAalike tote or the jeans so filthy they look like they could walk the runway sans model.)
We kind of like our fashion colleague’s posited explanation that many of these ideas come about as the result of well-served designer dinners at which someone comes up with a bonkers idea, someone else takes it seriously and, before you know it, fashionistas are wearing tea cosies.
We love the story that came out of Denmark this month about the men’s national football team declining a pay rise in order for their female counterparts to receive equal basic pay.
It seems the Danish national football association had been looking for a way to level the playing field (pun totally intended) for quite some time but neither squad wanted to see money taken from the boys to pay the girls.
So, in a move, that’s gained both the teams and Danish football as a whole, much international kudos, when it came time to renegotiate their contracts, the
men’s national team literally took one for the (wider) team and didn’t ask for more cash – thus enabling their female counterparts to benefit. While the move has been widely praised, there are always those who decry women in football generally and assert that female teams should not be paid equally since they don’t bring in equal revenue. When you look at the English Lionesses’ triumphs compared to the current troubles being faced by the England men at the Euros, you have to wonder which game these naysayers have been watching.
