THE EDITOR
Ramadan Kareem “Empty your stomach to feed your soul.”
E
xactly three years ago, I packed up my life, jumped on a plane and moved to Bahrain. My very first issue with FACT was for Ramadan and, let’s just say, I was not prepared for the lavish Iftars, the late-night Ghabgas, and the heat! That said, I was absolutely blown away by the celebrations of the Holy Month here, which is not only a time to fast, reflect and gather with family and friends, but also a time when the whole country, and region, comes alive! Of course, many people decide to jet off on their travels during Ramadan, however, most will stay and revel in the more peaceful and sleepy pace of everyday life. Personally, I LOVE the quieter roads and next to no traffic, and, of course, the chance to experience so many amazing Ramadan set-ups across the island. If you need inspiration for where to go with family and friends during this special month, check out our Ultimate Ramadan Rundown, starting p21 – there’s everything from big buffets to traditional majlis’, places to watch the UEFA cup matches, and the perfect spots for late-evening shisha and catch up with your loved ones. What makes Ramadan a special time in Bahrain? This is the question we asked some of our top industry friends to answer, and here’s what they had to say (p37). My favourite feature this month has to be A Cultural Canvas (p48); an interview with the super talented Zahra Gulraiz, whose personal experiences and interests have inspired a vibrant form of Arabic calligraphy. She also drew this month’s cover for us ❤ beautiful, isn’t it? FACT also brings you an exclusive feature with none other than Celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck. If you follow FACT on Instagram (@factmagazine), you’ll have seen all the great pics we took on our #WolfgangLovesBahrain tour when the world-renowned chef and his team came to town last month. We really gave them a taste of local culture through some great food and heritage stops. Read all about our day out on p59! Remember to reflect on life, respect the traditions, give to the less fortunate and, above all, make the most of this blessed month with your nearest and dearest. Ramadan Kareem, everyone!☺

Travel in Class: Lounge Life If you’re a frequent flyer on Gulf Air, you’ll know just how great the airline’s Falcon Gold Lounges are. They’re distinct in many ways – specifically, the architectural designs which combine the traditional Arabian theme with modern amenities, giving guests a sense of space and freedom.
With dedicated Gulf Air Falcon Gold Lounges in Bahrain International Airport, Heathrow Terminal 4 and the newest addition at Concourse D, Dubai International Airport, passengers are well taken care of with comfortably laid-out business, dining, and lounging facilities alongside TV areas in addition to the added facilities of the Quiet Lounge which holds private sleeping rooms with cosy beds, dimming lights and the Do Not Disturb option to rest in complete privacy. The sleeping rooms are also equipped with hi-definition TVs, with wireless headphones for those who want to watch their favourite programmes or listen to music in private. Additional facilities include a cigar lounge and shower rooms with hotel-style towels and luxury brand toiletries and amenities. There are separate prayer rooms and secure lockers for those who want to use these services, as well as a modern, self-service buffet area offering a wide variety of snacks and meals, including an Italian coffee corner with the world famous LavAzza brand coffee varieties. Passengers can stay connected with free Wi-Fi throughout the lounges, discreet power sockets at every seat and a business centre that includes PCs, fax machines and printers. For families, the lounge offers a spacious family room with the SkyNannies in attendance, and a gaming room equipped with Xbox and PlayStation units. In fact, the lounge is so appealing you may find yourself hoping for a flight delay. However, there’s not much chance of that happening as Gulf Air’s strong ontime-punctuality is becoming yet another trademark of the airline, with an average annual on-time-performance of 89 per cent in 2015, further facilitating the carrier’s seamless operations across its network. Gulf Air’s Falcon Gold Lounges seamlessly integrate contemporary design and 10

New Look, New Dishes
Tiramisu Sushi anyone? Yes you heard it right. Maki’s newest creation! Inspired by a winning dish at Horeca Kuwait, 2016, this dish is prepared by assistant group executive chef Iskandar Abdullah. Sushi rice, red quinoa, and caramalised almond, topped with Nutella cream, tiramisu (lady finger) biscuit, shiso cress, edible flower, raspberry sauce, and cocoa powder. Add all these wonderful ingredients, and you have yourself a truly mouthwatering dish. In the Spring of 2010, Maki Bahrain opened its doors to acclaim from both foodies and critics. Winning the best Newcomer, then best Japanese restaurant - Maki solidified its position in the market as a leading culinary establishment. So how did all of this happen? “It took passion, imagination, and commitment,” 12
fact magazine
explains co-founder Amer Zeitoun. “When we opened our first restaurant in Kuwait, we wanted it to be something special. We wanted to hear our guests’ compliment our food. We simply wanted to see happy faces, and we did!” The brothers Zeitoun started by presenting new ingredients to traditional Japanese cuisine, items that were otherwise unknown to this very refined and vibrant cuisine. Extra virgin olive oil, wild thyme, balsamic vinegar, truffles, foie gras, exotic cress, red and brown rice, these are just a few of the ingredients that formed Maki’s menu which was simply second to none. To this day, Maki chefs and founders continue to collaborate in presenting the most original dishes and ingredients. One recent delectable dish was the Jaber Maki. Made with tempura prawns, avocado and
sushi rice, wrapped in soy bean paper, then topped with chopped salmon, fresh wasabi, shiso cress, jalapeno, and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil – it has become a new guest favourite. Since Maki’s management is centered on attention to detail in both food and ambience, Maki Bahrain will soon undergo an extensive facelift in June 2016 which will enhance the already elegant setting of the restaurant. Book your table from now in order to sample Maki’s innovations and bask in the new look which should be ready by the end of June! ✤

RAMADAN TALK
What are your favourite things about the month of Ramadan in Bahrain? Definitely the family spirit and how the community comes together; it is so unique to this part of the world and in Bahrain, being such a small place one feels this unity even more; and this is especially true for expats. You get invited to peoples’ homes to spend time with local families, and it really allows you to embrace the spirit of Ramadan and discover new things about the local culture and traditions. It is definitely worth experiencing the Holy Month in Bahrain, the entire country comes together, everything comes to life and the feeling is mesmerising.
Where will you most likely spend your Iftar and Ramadan evenings? I look forward to enjoying the Iftars and Ghabgas we have planned at ART Rotana, we have a great set-up and ambience which is extremely popular. I also plan to visit other hotels, as this is a time when the industry comes together to celebrate. We don’t get much of a chance to mingle during the year due to busy schedules, but Ramadan is different, everyone makes an effort.
Patrice Cornee Resident Manager, ART Rotana Amwaj Island
Have you got any tips for enjoying the month of Ramadan to its fullest? I am relatively new to the island; just coming up to two years and this will be my second Ramadan in Bahrain. It is worth taking a stroll in the Muharraq and Manama souqs, there is a buzz in the air as people move about, to and from each others’ houses to celebrate in the evenings. The traditions are beautiful to see, especially Gargaoun when the children are all dressed up and they dance and exchange gifts. And the evening ghabgas in hotels are a mustdo – from the decorations to the traditional foods, the atmosphere and the entertainment, Ramadan is a magical season.
What are your favourite things about the month of Ramadan in Bahrain? My favourite thing about Ramadan is the atmosphere. I enjoy the various gatherings and ghabgas that happen throughout the month. Feeling closer to family as I always have Iftar with them and help cook meals, especially my favourite which is making dessert.
Have you got any tips for enjoying the month of Ramadan? The best tip is to minimise distractions, and try to foster mental clarity. Focus your thoughts on helping others, improving yourself and reading the Quran. Be gracious and charitable.
What are some of your favourite traditional food items to eat in Ramadan? To start off, my favourite appetiser would be cheese samboosa; the main dish would be Thareed and to end a meal it would be the yummiest dessert made by my Aunt which is L’gaimat.

What are your favourite things about the month of Ramadan in Bahrain? I love the beautiful spirit of Ramadan in Bahrain, and how the whole family gathers almost every day for Iftar. I like how the streets are decorated with lights and are always hyped ‘til dawn. The ghabgas and outings have a different taste in Ramadan that I truly look forward to from year to year.
Have you got any tips for celebrating Ramadan? Charity and generosity is especially urged during the Holy Month. The deprivation of fasting makes us sympathise with the suffering of others, and longing for of alleviating it; and it makes us remember the blessings of life which we normally take for granted. On the other hand, Iftar gatherings and ghabgas are always a fun way to enjoy Ramadan with friends and family!

From all the amazing food that Ramadan offers- what are your favourites to try? I would always say that it’s Ouzi, a traditional dish that should always be on the Iftar buffet.
Have you got any tips for enjoying the month of Ramadan to its fullest? There’s a lot of traditional gatherings in Bahrain, especially the Ghabgas in the night, that I think everyone should attend – they are not to be missed. Independence Day: Resurgence
What’s it about: Having barely survived an alien attack once before, Earth has strengthened its defences using superior technology. But trying to evade attack only tempt fate when the planet is plunged into battle with the alien race, again.
Director: Roland Emmerich cast: Maika Monroe, Joey King, Liam Hemsworth Why it’s worth watching? Once Independence Day: Resurgence had been announced, there was no doubt it had plenty of obstacles to face. Not only was there speculation that it would fall foul to the bad sequel curse, the first film’s biggest cast member, Will Smith, said that he wouldn‘t be taking part. Despite this stumbling block, Roland Emmerich has pulled out all the stops to make this film an epic blockbuster. There is talented cast aplenty with originals such as Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, combined with the fresh faces of Liam Hemsworth and Maika Monroe, and although it’s not enough to erase Will from your mind completely, you’ll definitely find yourself enjoying the cast change-ups more than you thought. When it comes to the visuals, this movie is a treat. Despite being heavy in CGI, it’s absolutely breathtaking and will leave you in awe of the insanely creative team behind it all. Whether you’re watching this film for the nostalgia, or simply the love of the genre, it’s guaranteed to take you back to the drama of the 1997 classic and put a smile back on your face.

Who played the lead male role in the 1997 film Independence Day? Send your answers to shabana@fact-magazine.com
Director: Jon M. Chu cast: Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg Why it’s worth watching? If you’re anything like us, you’ll agree that the best part of the illusion is finding out how it was done, and this is exactly what Now You See Me 2, rather like it’s predecessor, does. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this takes away from the ‘wow’ element though, this film will still have you wide-eyed with excitement at what The Four Horsemen may pull off next, but it also gives you a peek through the window of illusion, without completely shattering the glass. The majority of the cast has returned for round two, but the introduction of Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan definitely ups the comedic value and makes this film a must-see.

The Getaway By Red Hot Chili Peppers
Having been making music for over three decades you’d think these guys might have put down their instruments and called it a day, and considering it’s been five years since they last released a record, we were just as surprised (and a little excited) with their return. Thankfully, the band has made a long awaited comeback that pulls sounds reminiscent of their earlier musical cache. Despite having had multiple members since starting up way back in 1983, there has always been one consistency that they’ve failed to stray from: funk. It’s been a repeated theme in their music and one that we’re happy to say is packed into this album. Whether it’s combined with dreamy vocals, psychedelic riffs or electric guitar solos, it’s the defining sound of this album and is undoubtedly the genre that has given them their success. In true Chili Peppers’ fashion, there’s plenty of genrecrossover, something that keeps this record fresh and provides a song for every Chili’s fan, old or new. All these elements combined make The Getaway exactly what we wanted to hear. 48

alligraphy has been a part of the Islamic art world for many centuries, however, this sophisticated form of art has also appeared in other cultures, including Roman, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mayan and more, with many incorporating it in their scriptures and books. Still, calligraphy remains an intricate artistic style that has been used to a much greater extent in the Arab world, in wonderfully diverse and imaginative ways that have taken the written word from pen to paper, to canvas, to the streets, the city walls, and beyond. For these and many other reasons, calligraphy has become somewhat of a symbolic feature of Islamic art. Its premise often lies within Arabic writing, whereby the end result is the balance between transmitting a text and expressing its meaning through a formal visual code. This is also the very reason why calligraphy is both a most beautiful and powerful art form, having been developed and adopted by traditional and modern-day artists to share their views, messages and interests. For us, 27-year-old Zahra Gulraiz is one such artist. Her childhood with family as well as her religious background and deep connection with the Arabic language has inspired Zahra in her artistic pursuits.

“While my peers in kindergarten chased each other, rode their bikes, played with barbie dolls or read their books, you would find me wandering the halls looking at the paintings on the walls,” Zahra reminisces. “As I grew older, my father inspired me a great deal. We would spend our free time painting my furniture pink or making 3D art installations. I think my Dad was one of the biggest reasons why I have always been inclined towards art,” she adds. Zahra’s other significant guidance came from Arabic writing, which is also the main influence for calligraphy too. Many Muslim communities and cultures hold the Arabic language in great esteem for it was the language in which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. “As we lived in a practicing family, the Quran was a vital part of my life,” Zahra says. “After years of learning and getting accustomed to the Arabic text in the Quran, I gained a strong connection
with the Arabic language. “I fell in love with the structure of each alphabet. As I made my way through college, I found myself drifting away from the norm of creating portraits and landscapes, and more towards the beauty that lay within the Arabic text,” she explains.

solid, vivid colours against the curves and edges of calligraphy to create an illusion of abstract art. Each painting signifies a certain theme or has a meaning to it, even though it might only look like a bright painting.” So, what is it about art that grips her? “Oh gosh, everything!” she says. “I

who don’t necessarily enjoy viewing art, but they all have something to say about it. Art has its way to make people talk, and I love that,” she adds Aside from calligraphy, Zahra also ventures into pop art style and geometry, with a great level of enthusiasm for symmetry. More recently, she has been
fascinated by the art of mandala (a spiritual pattern and ritual symbol found in India, representing the universe). “I joined Instagram and saw some amazing artists posting some of the most intricate mandalas I have ever seen,” Zahra recalls. “My first mandala was inspired by the fact that I had a compass, pencil, and some time to kill. It started as a doodle but ended up being so much more. The aspect that I love most about Mandalas’ is the freedom you have with your designs. It’s quite therapeutic too!” Zahra’s art has been featured on Eid greeting cards, and she’s currently looking to create a colouring book for adults, alongside putting her designs on handbags and stationery too. “This looks like a promising year for me,” she says, excitedly. “I would like to have more gallery shows, gain more exposure, and maybe even launch my own clothing line… Bring it on, 2016!” When your enthusiasm and artwork speaks for itself, in the way that Zahra’s does, there really is no limit to what can be achieved. fact magazine

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MATERIALS, TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES USED IN YOUR WORK… I am forever in love with acrylic paints. I love the texture and how I am able to mould the paintings to have rough and jagged surfaces. If I want an even texture, acrylics give me that too. I was introduced to a number of mediums in University, but somehow I would always lean towards acrylics. I have a habit of keeping all my old paintbrushes (some of them are over 10 years old!) and I’m a massive fan of Winsor and Newton products. As for my techniques, it’s a secret! YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUND BUDDING ARTISTS… The most important advice I can give, no matter how generic it sounds, is to be true to who you are. You don’t need to change your artistic style to what is “in” at the moment. Similarly, if you see an artist who is getting recognition for a certain style of work, you don’t need to copy them in order to gain the same recognition. Art is about a feeling, a moment, it’s about you. And if you manage to stay true to yourself, the satisfaction you will feel will triumph over the approval of a thousand people. ✤ GO: Follow Zahra on instagram (@zahragulraiz) to view more artwork and connect with the young artist.

Little did Chef WP know that FACT had arranged to give him a little taste of local life in Bahrain, with a day trip to visit some of the island’s best foodie and cultural hotspots; here’s all the fun from behind the scenes of our #WolfgangLovesBahrain tour! fact magazine

8.30am – Morning Meet-Up
We meet Chef WP and his team at the hotel, where our rides are ready to whisk us away! From the get-go, he is on his A-game, even posing for numerous selfies before we set off (because, you know, one selfie just isn’t enough!).
9am – Central Market
We’re driving to the lively central market and Chef WP is all smiles, taking in the surroundings through the car window. Before we arrive at the bustling market, he tells us: “Bahrain is different. Everything is more liberal here and people are so nice and welcoming.” Out we hop for our first stop; the fish market. Chef WP and his team get stuck right in, coming face-to-face with more than just hammour, as the market offers them an insight into the many different species of fish found in the waters around Bahrain, as well as a look at local tradesmen and the art of getting a good deal! One memorable find has to be the baby shark, which fascinated Chef WP, too. It was great to see a world-renowned chef sharing some of his tips, and picking up new knowledge, of different seafood from the local fish market! We then move out and onto the fresh fruit and vegetable stalls, where everything from exotic produce to locally-grown groceries is sold. We love that Chef WP and his team are very interested in the more unusual products and happy to try things as they go along! After all, discovering new ingredients and flavours is one of the best things about being a chef, right?!
9.45am – Spice Souq
A short drive down the road and we’re at the bottom end of Manama Souq, an area which is packed with spice shops selling a huge variety of powdery condiments to liven up your cooking. Chef WP mingles around the many pyramid mountains of different spices, casually smelling and tasting the ones that peak his interest. In the end, we get a bag of turmeric, red chilli powder, and garam masala – all of which Chef WP makes use of in his restaurants back at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Winner! It’s already hot outside, so we decide to take a pit stop at Kasab Restaurant. Its walls are covered in black and white pictures of Bahrain’s past. We show Chef WP what Bab Al Bahrain looked like in the early 1900s, as he waits for fresh bread and daal, which he savours with a cup of karak chai. He’s eager to meet and greet the locals and regulars at the café, and we take this opportunity to snap some more pictures (for social media, of course!). 62

11am – Farm and Herb Garden Stop
On our drive to a small farm in Budaiya, Chef WP shares his everyday life with us. Did you know that despite being one of the most sought-after and hard-working chefs in the world, he doesn’t like to make plans! On any given day, Chef WP likes to keep things spontaneous; his next family vacay is due soon, but he’s yet to decide on a destination! “Life is too planned already, with my busy work schedule, so when I’m at home, I like to take the day as it comes,” he says. We make two quick stops – the first, a small farm of mainly homegrown rocca leaves and baby date palm trees, and the second was a beautiful herb garden called Pomegranate Nursery, in Jannusan. Here, we introduced Chef WP and his team to Reyhan – the famous aromatic basil of Bahrain.
11.30am – Budaiya Port
One of our absolute favourite spots in Bahrain is Budaiya Port. It’s quiet, picturesque and it’s where we frequently visit for the best tom yum soup in town. Today, we’re here for something that’s more of a delicacy – baby shark! It’s finely chopped and mixed with spices, and Chef WP adds a squeeze of lemon to it, before tucking in. His verdict – very good! The dhows docked in at the port make for a great backdrop for more photos, but IT’S HOT, so we’re back in the car and off to our next stop!
12noon – Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre
We had to show Chef WP some of Bahrain’s traditional crafts and industries that have become a legacy for the country; the collection of workshops at Al Jasra were a perfect introduction. We stopped by the basket weaving, mat making, artisan, textiles, woodwork and pottery workshops, where Chef WP was able to get a first-hand look at each practice. Perhaps the most memorable part of the visit was when he picked up an Oud and, honestly, played it like a pro. Everyone in the room was impressed! It’s safe to say that apart from learning more about Bahrain’s rich heritage, Chef WP picked up a great new skill in playing the Oud. It was on the way to our chosen lunch spot that we asked Chef WP what he’s loved most about Bahrain, so far. He says: “I like the markets a lot, we don’t have many in the US. I like that Bahrain is becoming self-sufficient with the many farms, for example. It keeps people working and they don’t have to rely on outside ingredients.” Spoken like a man who really appreciates quality, homegrown, products! fact magazine

1pm – Lunch at Freej Bin Rashdan, Muharraq
Where do you take a chef who has prepared the menu for the Oscars for more than 20 years now? (no pressure). You go local! We head to Muharraq and stop off at Freej Bin Rashdan where Chef WP and his team experience an authentic taste of Bahraini food and hospitality. From using rose water to clean their hands, to having a go at preparing khubz (bread) in a traditional clay oven, and trying a number of Bahraini breakfast and main course dishes, Chef WP and crew discuss flavours, ingredients and cooking methods around the dinner table. A couple of dishes that stood out for them included the Madhruba and the Khubz with Mehyawa (fermented fish sauce). So much so that after we sipped down our Gahwa (Arabic coffee), we made a quick pit stop at a local grocery store to pick up some Mehyawa, Khubz flour, Nakhy (chick peas) and Bajeela (parsley).
2.30pm – Return to Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay
We’re back in the CUT restaurant kitchen, and it’s been a long, hot day so far. Yet, Chef WP, is still full of energy and, much to our delight, he decides to whip up some Bahraini-inspired dishes using some of the ingredients we’ve picked up along the way. First though, we gift Chef WP with his very own traditional ghutra and egal, and in no time he’s got it on! As for the cooking, Chef WP makes khubz from scratch and fills it with mehyawa and his own twist of baby tomatoes and Parmesan cheese. He then cooks Hawamer fish using the local spices and some veggies we picked up earlier. Taste test: CRAZY DELICIOUS!
4pm - #WolfgangLovesBahrain
After spending the best part of a day with Chef WP, what we loved most was seeing his enthusiasm and interest in learning and trying new things, and also sharing his foodie stories along the way (like, showing us a picture of him just a week earlier where he was… wait for it… feeding risotto to Lady Gaga, literally!!!). A down-to-earth demeanor, a willingness to experience local culture, and an absolute genius at making great food, Chef WP is definitely worthy of being an honorary Bahraini! He even made a little joke after the tour, saying: “I feel like I could get offered a Bahraini passport after this.” And so, for showcasing the little treasures of local life in Bahrain, that’s a job well done! ✤ GO: Visit CUT by Wolfgang Puck, re Asian Cuisine and Blue Moon Lounge at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Sometimes, there’s nothing better than spending a long weekend at a resort that is pr actically on your doorstep and packed with facilities that will give you the holiday feeling. FACT finds out just how The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Gr and Canal fits the bill when it comes to summer tr avel in the GCC…
W
e had previously stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal and enjoyed the true essence of five-star hospitality. The second time around, we were looking for something a little different; facilities, fun and things to do in-resort which could keep guests entertained for a long weekend. Let’s just say, we were not disappointed! Much like the UAE capital itself, which is a blend of a laid-back and welcoming, traditional culture with lively happenings, modern amenities, and luxury offerings, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal is a clear representation of this. Located just across the road from the beautiful Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the hotel is somewhat of a dream destination that could easily resemble an opulent resort found on the canal shores of Venice – with all the charm and elegance of Arabian hospitality, of course. Luxury Accommodation Stay as a Club Level guest and revel in all the personalised service, attention to detail and extra benefits offered as part of this accommodation type. Firstly, the Club Level has both room and suite options that would suit all types of travellers including couples, groups of friends, families with children and even solo visitors. Private check-in at the Club Lounge is how you’ll start your stay. Staff will greet you with a friendly smile and share information about all the Club Level amenities and extras that you can enjoy, as well as addressing any other queries you might have. We stayed in a Twin Club Room with a balcony that overlooked truly amazing views of the beach and Grand Canal, the 70

lush gardens and pool area, and the city itself, as far as the eye could see. The room is very spacious with comfy beds (that made for some of the best night’s sleep we’ve had in a long time), a great desk area for work and leisure, and a full marble bathroom with a large tub, separate rainshower and luxury amenities. Then there’s the usual excellent features such as the 42” LCD TV, fully stocked mini bar, tea and coffee-making facilities (incl. Nespresso machine), a safe, iron and ironing board, hairdryer and complimentary shoeshine and newspaper, to name but a few of the things that will make for an even more comfortable stay. Having access to the Club Lounge is definitely a bonus. Here, you can enjoy complimentary food and beverage for breakfast, afternoon tea, and light snacks and drinks in the evening. We especially loved the breakfast with its huge variety of hot and cold food – the porridge, the pastries and the fresh fruits were the winners! The added value of having a place that offers you free foodie treats and drinks throughout the day is an absolute delight! So, whether you decide to spend all your days at the hotel, or if you’re venturing out to explore the city, a Club Room will be the perfect place to take respite after any activity or adventure! Weekend Hole Up The one thing that we really enjoyed during this stay at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, is having the luxury of not having to leave the resort to enjoy our home-away-from-home holiday. One of the reasons why the hotel makes for a good GCC staycation, for the whole family, is that it offers something for everyone! For

little ones, the pool and children’s water play area will be a haven for fun, plus the Ritz Kids Club which offers safe, friendly and super fun recreational activities, will provide mum and dad with some ‘me time’ to chill out on the beach and take a dip in the canal waters. Couples, friends and solo guests will also relish in the outdoor facilities, as well as the beachfront, Bedouin-inspired ESPA with a hammam, sauna, steam room, plunge pool, and treatments that embody the very meaning of relaxation. On top of all this, you have,
literally, every kind of cuisine to satisfy all those cravings! For a taste of five-star dining, head to The Forge Steakhouse and opt for the deliciously creamy Burrata Salad, followed by your choice of main with mouthwatering sides and a glass of vino or one of the thirst-quenching mocktails. The venue is elegant yet inviting and the staff is incredibly attentive. This one’s for those who want a more refined dining experience with quality ingredients but without the pretentiousness of the usual upmarket restaurants. Also, make sure to
try the gelato from Dolce, and do spend an evening on the Li Jiang terrace which boasts some of the most stunning night views of the Grand Mosque. We must also commend the in-room dining service, for having fallen sick with a tummy bug, the Ritz team was able to specially-prepare food for us that wasn’t on the menu – big tick for guest satisfaction! Now, do you see why there’s no need to leave the resort? In true staycation style, we spent three whole days at the hotel, experiencing ALL that it has to offer. ✤ fact magazine

e take a ride in the Chrysler 200, the entry point for Chrysler’s product offering. It sits alongside top-trim, mid-size family sedans like the Mazda 6, Kia Optima or Toyota Camry, although premium materials, a stylish interior and great driving experience set it apart in a competitive field. While the initial impression of the car’s exterior won’t take your breath away, the lines are smooth and clean, and there’s absolutely nothing to dislike about it. It doesn’t take long for the sporty stance and sloping roofline to really grow on you. However, it’s on the inside that the 200 really impresses. It’s the little things, like the unique and innovative dividable centre console storage, which has a gap in it for the USB/MP3/ charging cables to pass through, so that you can charge your phone without annoying wires trailing all over the dashboard. Chrysler’s UConnect infotainment
ISLAND RIDES
system is well thought out and easy to use, and boasts just about everything you’d expect from a high-spec family sedan, such as Sat-Nav, Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, and so on. On the steering wheel you’d find the cruise control and audio functions, and the snazzy blue glow surrounding the instrument cluster is a really nice touch, especially at night. The comfortable leather seats and premium feel to everything makes for a very inviting interior, and a smooth quiet ride means a relaxing drive both in the city and on the highway. Unfortunately, that sloping roofline does mean that the back seat is slightly cramped, and anyone six foot tall or more would not enjoy a long journey in the back of this car. Once again, the 295hp from the 3.6l Pentastar V6 engine won’t take your breath away, but it does pull the 200 along at a decent pace. 0-100km/h is managed in six seconds, and it has a top speed of 195km/h. In terms of safety the 200 also stands out, with ESC, ABS, side impact beams, front and rear curtain airbags, driver and passenger two stage airbags and knee airbags. Overall, the Chrysler 200 is the kind of inoffensive, comfortable, safe and easy-onthe-eye family sedan that will appeal to middle-class, white-collar types and rental companies. After three days driving it, from Manama to Durrat, and back, there was absolutely nothing that we didn’t like about this car. In fact, the easy-to-use audio and Bluetooth system, the intelligent storage spaces and clean dash and centre console, really impressed. ✤ GO: Visit www.ahmedzayani.com or call Ahmed Zayani & Sons on 1723 8822 for more information on Chrysler models.

LotusGrill
Portable, Convenient, Safe
Everyone loves a BBQ, but unless you’re in your comfortable back garden with your big multi-hob gas BBQ, you’re looking at a rather useless disposable tinfoil tray with a grill the size of an A4 sheet. That is, until now. Enter, Loutusgrill... The LotusGrill is probably the world’s most convenient and safe portable BBQ. These unique, compact BBQ units, which weigh less than 4kg, boast an innovative design that is not only very efficient, but also very safe. This is because if they are accidentally tipped over, the smouldering coals won’t be spilled all over your boat, creating a potential fire hazard. Around the size of a very large salad bowl, the LotusGrill is basically a central mesh cylinder of hot coals in a metallic reflective tub that sends all the cooking heat upwards. It also boasts a built-in speed-adjustable fan powered by three AA batteries that helps to ignite the coals, as well as boosting heat during cooking if desired. Because of the reflective tub, less coal is required, as more of the heat is being sent upwards to the grill, instead of down into the BBQ itself as with conventional types. A bonus is that, because of the way that the coals are kept 80
fact magazine
safely inside the cylinder, they won’t spill out even if the unit rolls over. It can also be picked up even whilst it’s cooking, as the heat doesn’t escape and heat the outside casing of the unit. You can literally pick it up by hand and turn it upside down without disaster. Although you might want to take the steaks off first… The LotusGrill comes in two sizes – standard, for up to five people, and large, for up to ten people, although with the long cooking time, you can realistically just keep cooking meat for an hour and feed many more. There is also a range of accessories including a lid for covered grilling, a Teppanyaki plate, and a pizza stone set! If you use the recommended hardwood small-sized briquettes, you can have it up to cooking temperature in less than five minutes, and you can enjoy up to an hour of cooking time! It’s really smart stuff, and we want one… LotusGrill BBQs are available from Tavola stores in the Gulf, or from their online shop at www.tavolashop.com. It’’ll be the best investment you make for summer! ✤

Goat Simulator MMO
This extremely useful app is your all-in-one tool for the Holy Month of Ramadan, helping you to keep track of timings for daily prayers, Sehri and Iftar. It also boasts 114 Quran Surah for reading, as well as the complete Holy Quran in eight different languages, as well as audio versions for those with poor sight. The calendar shows both Islamic and Western calendar dates to avoid any confusion, and there is even a Qibla compass that can point towards Mecca wherever you are. This works via GPS, so does not require data or WiFi connection. This app is free, and was developed purely to aid Muslims through the Holy Month, and as a result the developers offer four different ways to get in touch with them for problems or feedback, via email, Facebook, Google+ or Twitter.
In the beginning, there was… Goat Simulator. People around the world rejoiced as their wildest dreams of experiencing life as ‘the goat’ were realised. Capricorns no longer had the monopoly on the goat experience. ANYONE could be a goat! But soon, boredom began to set in. Just being a goat wasn’t enough. A goat needs a quest. A goat needs enemies to vanquish, and worlds to conquer. But fear not, because now there is… Goat Simulator MMO! It simulates being a goat. But it doesn’t end there my friends. There are five different goat classes – Warrior, Rogue, Magician, Hunter and… Microwave. Yes. Microwave. There are dozens of quests to complete across an expansive open world environment populated by fortresses, heroes and monsters of ancient lore, and a hundred levels to achieve. There are even elves and dwarves and stuff. And always… the goats.
The Best Part The App shows daily prayer times and Suhoor/Iftar times, and you can set alarms for all of them, and it works offline too, so you won’t miss anything without an internet connection, as long as you’ve set your location correctly.

From lightweight and crinkle-cut Italian chiffons to intricate lace and black satin crepe, the fabrics play with a mix of matte and glossy textures. The women’s offering further includes a black leather heeled sandal with a gold turn-lock, and a shoulder bag with the same closure and a gold chain strap. The collection for girls of five dresses features a white pleated A-line dress with a metallic gold sequin collar; a deep cranberry floral jacquard dress with an oversized bow on the waist; a black lace party dress with a silk bow on the waist; a nautical navy and white striped dress with a red bow on the waist; and a black party dress with capped lace sleeves. RAMADAN REVIEW
E
very year in Bahrain, you’ll see families, friends, colleagues and corporate partners, and all those looking to enjoy the true spirit of Ramadan, gather at Elite Resort & Spa’s now famous Al Noor Ramadan Tent. It’s a beautiful setting, with an elegant and welcoming atmosphere that boasts a capacity of up to 500 people and an extravagant buffet that will not disappoint. This year, you can expect a great selection of Arabic dishes, including all the classic hot and cold mezze, such as creamy hummous, fresh tabbouleh and fattoush, tasty falafel and so much more, alongside Bahraini and regional-style specialities like the mouthwatering ouzi (our favourite dish on the buffet), which is served in a huge, round, silver dish, capable of serving a crowd of diners. Then there’s machboos and succulent grills too, for all those with an appetite! There’s also going to be a fusion of continental and Indian food, giving visitors nothing but variety when it comes to Iftar and Ghabga. If you’ve got a sweet tooth then get ready to indulge. Al Noor’s culinary team will be setting up two dedicated stations, one for around 20 different delectable desserts and another for 15 types of Arabic sweets. On top of this, there’s going to be a Date display with more than 12 kinds of dates, alongside dried fruits, nuts and sugar candy. How yummy does that sound? We were curious to know exactly how much prep goes into making this food feast every day. Chef Redha and Chef Anthony, the main duo behind the culinary team for Al Noor, tell us that the preparation of the buffet starts at least six hours beforehand. We also like the fact that although the food served at Al Noor is abundant; the chefs take great care in not overindulging by making copious amounts. They order quality meat, and depending on reservations and walk-in covers, they control the cooking so that there’s enough fresh and delicious fare for diners to enjoy and less wastage! The chefs are eager for us to know that they like to play with the tastes but still keep the dishes recognisable. One 118 fact magazine

addition to the buffet for 2016, which was a huge hit last year as well, is going to be the sushi – we can’t wait to tuck in! During our sneak preview of the Ramadan food, some of the standouts included the chicken and rice, the kousa mahshi (stuffed zucchini), the meat kibbeh, the crispy falafel, and the sweet treats. The dates were some of the best we’ve had, and will make for the perfect choice to break your fast and replenish your energy levels. Al Noor tent is divided into two parts, smoking and non-smoking. A henna artist will be present alongside an Arabic band playing traditional music on the Oud (during Ghabga) and TV screens showing all the popular Ramadan sitcoms, making this the ideal place for family Iftars, corporate Ghabgas and all other Ramadan celebrations. It’s a great value-for-money experience at just BD9.9++ for Iftar; inclusive of food and Ramadan juices. Children aged six to 12-years-old pay half price. Ghabga is BD12.5++ (from 8pm to 2am) and shisha is available too. Suhoor is BD5.5++, with kids under 12-years-old dining for free. A
bright, light-filled restaurant with vibrant décor is the location of the newest Friday Brunch on the island. That’s right, Flavours on 2 at Downtown Rotana is a beautiful venue with its funky, effervescent colour scheme and welcoming vibe. The openstyle kitchen and live cooking stations add a fun dynamic to the restaurant. Trendy tables and comfy chairs with varied seating means there’s plenty of room for different groups of diners. In fact, on our visit, there were families with children, couples, friends and even solo foodies, tucking into the abundant buffet. Talking of buffet, let’s get down to real business – the food. At first impression, we’re wowed by the variety on offer here. For starters you’ve got a HUGE selection of fresh, colourful salads, sushi, hot and cold Arabic mezze, crispy tempura and an awesome pastry stand. There’s even an extensive range of condiments, dressings, pickles, olives, cheese, and cured meats. 122 fact magazine
We’d recommend starting with a tasty salad – the Roasted Pumpkin with Pine Nuts and Rocket, and the Ripe Papaya with Shrimps – are both light and flavourful, setting your palate up for the next round. For mains, you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice so, word of advice, go slow and try a little bit of everything! Seafood lovers will be in food heaven as there is everything from oysters to lobster, calamari, shrimp and, our favourite, soft shell crab. You can eat the seafood selection cold, straight off the ice display, or have them grilled to perfection!
Foodie corner
Meat lovers will not be disappointed, too. Think succulent lamb chops, juicy beef and kebabs, and delicious chicken skewers and wings. Have them grilled to preference and served with your favourite veggies and sauces – simply mouthwatering! If that wasn’t enough, there’s an AMAZING roast turkey and ribs with all the trimmings and sides – it really feels like Christmas come early (we love it!). For all the vegetarian folks out there, you’ve got it good too! Indulge in the salad selection, the cheese station, the veggie tempura, stir-fried noodles, roast potato, and different cooked vegetables like corn on the cob, broccoli, carrots and more. Our ultimate meat-free dish was the luscious vegetarian biryani from the Indian food corner. In fact, the Indian food was some of the best we’ve had in Bahrain, with the shrimp curry coming out on top as everyone’s favourite. Shawarma, grilled sea bass, roasted duck, braised beef, and more savoury delights will keep you going back and forth from the buffet – just enjoy at your own pace! And, remember to leave a little room for dessert, for there’s SO much to relish. We ended the mighty feast with the most exquisite sticky date cake and ice cream – yummy doesn’t even begin to cover it! The Friday Brunch at Flavours on 2 is not over-the-top or too crowded with lots of random cuisines. It’s set up beautifully, it’s easy to walk around and see what’s on offer, and the staff is friendly and attentive to guests’ needs. The concept of a truly international selection of food will tantalise every taste bud, and where there’s something for everyone, you’re guaranteed great conversation and good times! ✤ GO: The Friday Brunch on Flavours on 2, Downtown Rotana takes place every Friday (excluding Ramadan) from 12.30pm to 4pm. ou’ve probably driven down THAT road in Hamala where takeaways, restaurants and small shops line a busy road. There’s The Grub Shack, Pizza Bella, and El Gringo to name but a few of the outlets along the colourful strip. One place that you may not have noticed (we didn’t until recently!) is the charming little Eat Café. A small venue downstairs, compared to many of its neighbours, Eat Café will transport you to the pleasant breakfast, lunch and coffee shop dining scenes in Europe or beyond. We’re also surprised to find that it has a considerable amount of space upstairs, where many students and young entrepreneurs come for a delicious beverage and snack when they want some peace and quiet to get their work done. With a neutral colour scheme of earthy tones, Eat Café will immediately give you a welcoming vibe, and if the décor doesn’t do the trick, then the friendly staff will certainly make you feel at home. There are sweet wall hangings with inspirational quotes and sayings, and wooden blocks with the word EAT across them, dotted in different places to give the café its unique character. We take a seat upstairs and decide to try a variety of items from the menu! Firstly, let us tell you about the huge assortment of hot and cold beverages offered. everyday favourites like cappuccino and latte, as well as the classic tastes of monte bianco and mocha, plus hot chocolate and various teas, there’s something to please every caffeine lover! If you prefer cold drinks, you’re also in for a treat as Eat Café offers creamy frappes, iced coffees and teas, and fresh carrot and orange juice, too. It’ll be easy to work your way through a few drinks if you’re meeting up with a friend, especially as the prices are also very appealing! If you love a good salad, then Eat Café has got you covered! We tried the grilled chicken, avocado, cherry tomato and crispy lettuce concoction – the portion is generous, the ingredients are fresh and with a touch of olive oil or your chosen dressing, this would make the perfect healthy pick. In addition to this, we also tucked into a main that the café has become famous for - its baked potatoes. A beautifully-soft potato is split down the middle and filled with the most delicious chicken, mushroom and cheese mix, which is then topped with broccoli and sweet corn. One word – exquisite! You can, of course, choose your fillings, and indulge in the foodie goodness! If you fancy something a little heavier but still with a healthy twist, go for the tasty brown pasta with sundried tomatoes and mushrooms in a creamy red sauce. Word of warning, the portion is big enough for two people! For dessert, you’ve got to try the signature lotus cheesecake or the mouthwatering carrot cake. The first is a gorgeous blend of a biscuit base, creamy centre and fingerlicking top layer; whilst the carrot cake goes perfectly with a hot drink. Either way, your taste buds will be at peak satisfaction! We fell in love with Eat Café for its simplicity and dedication to hearty food. If you want something fancy, this isn’t the place for that. But if you want a decent, fuss-free meal at a great price, with good service to go with, make sure you check this place out a.s.a.p! ✤ GO: Visit Eat Cafe in Hamala. PEP TALK: HEALTH
R amadan: The Digestive System The Holy Month of Ramadan is HERE. So, it is very important for us to understand the concept of fasting and how best to utilise it to improve our health. HERE’S AN INSIGHT FROM ROYAL BAHRAIN HOSPITAL...
T
o fast is good. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) has said more than a thousand years ago: “Do fast; you get better health”. Even in medical history, Hippocrates, one of the most outstanding figures in the field of medicine, had recommended fasting in order to foster a healthier body while, various religions incorporate fasting for spiritual cleansing. Recently, according to the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Science, fasting was found to have beneficial effects on heart health as well. It is thought that fasting causes our bodies to metabolise cholesterol and glucose in a better fashion while fasting. It was also shown that the level of LDL (bad) cholesterol would decrease and the level of HDL (good) cholesterol would increase while fasting. Additionally, it has been shown that our bodies have a higher number of circulating blood cells after fasting; thus, it is hypothesised that fasting increases healthier blood cells as well. Further, some of the illnesses of the digestive system are food related, so once you give rest to your stomach you will give more chance to increase the possibility of healing and improvement. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), which is one of the most common diseases, has a very positive outcome during Ramadan time, mainly if they have good and balanced meals in Iftar and Suhour times. However, it is important to eat the right foods so as to maximise the benefits. So, here are a few suggestions. First, try to avoid simple carbohydrates
and all “simple” starchy foods such as “sugary” foods including cookies, chocolates, ice creams, aerated drinks, etc. They result in early satiety but also sudden hunger afterwards. Second, maintain a good balance - a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, proteins and fibres. A plate of salads, small portion of rice/bread and a bowl of chicken/meat/ legumes (for vegetarians) is a must during Ramadan and year-round health. Third, drink plenty of water. Water washes away the excess nitrogen from the body found in protein-rich foods. But, avoid taking large quantities at a time. Try to space out to ensure your body is hydrated throughout the day. Fourth, add dairy products to your
routine, especially yogurt. Dairy products relax your digestive system, keep you satiated and will make you less thirsty. Yogurt also programmes your body for fasting by preventing dehydration and allowing your digestive system to be healthier. Lastly, stay away from salty, spicy and fried foods, especially if you suffer from acid reflux, as they will lead to excessive thirst. For Iftar, a bowl of yogurt, a small bowl of soup, maybe with a few dates should be enough to momentarily satisfy you before you go for the main meal about 30 minutes later. Similarly, in Suhour, keep your food simple, balanced and nutritious. Avoid over eating, which can lead to accumulation of fat. Ramadan Kareem. ✤ fact magazine

Enjoying Ramadan Georgina Jennsen is the LADY behind the popular lifestyle blog, Blonde in Bahrain. Georgina loves all things beautiful and luxurious.
This year will mark my 18th Ramadan in Bahrain, and it’s a time of year I really enjoy. I love the deserted sunset streets, with driving time to almost anywhere on the island cut in half. I enjoy the colourful hotel ghabgas, with ladies adorned in lavish jalabiyas. And I always look forward to the sound of the canons, fired from Arad Fort, morning and evening. But I have to admit there are a few things that go on at this time that we all could do without. The excessive amounts of food offered at buffets night after night makes my eyes water, as does the thought of the waste. And then there’s the mad rush to get home from work, or worse still, to reach home before the sun sets. Add to this, the long hot summer days, and you’ve got levels of impatience that are seriously off the charts. Personal gripes aside, there’s so much we can all learn from the true spirit of Ramadan when applied to everyday life. Giving to those less fortunate than ourselves is an essential part of what it means to belong to humanity. And as you probably already know, it feels so good to give. Wishing you all a blessed month beautiful people! ✤ Elite Resort & Spa hosted a special preview evening for its popular Al Noor Ramadan Tent. Members of the media, corporate guests and VIP invitees enjoyed a sumptuous buffet and enjoyed the many delicious treats that are going to be available for Iftar and Ghabga throughout the Holy Month.

Ramadan Fitness
A Month to Remember
Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…
Christal Dennis, Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist, is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...
Ramadan is here and for those who will be fasting, here are a few tips to help keep your fitness on track: Continue Working Out You should continue working out but remember this is not the time to try something new but do enough to preserve your fitness level. Plan Ahead Make sure you have as many carbohydrates as possible as carbss give you energy. Once fast is broken start with lots of water and something like a banana and dates smoothie to start to bring your glycogen levels back up. Intensity During this time you should cut down the intensity of your workouts as you will not have the energy to do really intense workouts. Cut down on the cardio and do more body weight and resistance training. Change Your Workout Times Change the times you workout so that they are closer to when you’ve eaten or are about to eat. This way if you workout just before fast is broken you can replace your energy reserves. Be Conscious of What You Eat Many of my clients tell me they have things like samboosa, fried stuff and sweets - these things should be cut out as this is the time to choose foods with high nutritional values to fuel your body with all the nutrients it needs Make this Ramadan season happy, healthy and fit! ✤
The only thing between us and the summer holidays is the Holy Month of Ramadan. Well there is the time it will take for school to finish and all the exams to be done and dusted, but I digress. I was quite surprised when my daughter told me that she was excited for Ramadan. I was not born Muslim so I don’t have childhood memories to draw on about Ramadan. My daughter’s excitement however made me think of Ramadan in a different way. To kids, it’s a time when everyone gets together after a day of fasting to enjoy that togetherness into the wee hours. For children who are old enough to fast, completing a day of fasting gives them a sense of achievement. It’s very easy to turn Ramadan into a time of overindulgence and turning days into night. But Ramadan has quite a deep philosophical meaning. Stoic philosophers like Seneca actually highly encourage those who have comfortable lives to have days of fasting and living modestly because doing this not only helps you to face your fears of experiencing poverty but it also helps you to appreciate what you have. There are not many things that are sweeter than your soft cosy bed after having to rough it out for a while, for example. I myself am not too sure whether I will be able to resist the late nights during Ramadan, but I would like to set some goals, like eating moderately at iftar time. We can also choose to be really aware of the sensation of hunger and how it affects our behaviour. What a wonderful opportunity to gain some personal growth! A blessed Ramadan to all - I hope you enjoy the quiet and calm that comes during this Holy Month. ✤

Ayman Hammad
Director of Sales & Marketing, Gulf Residence Amwaj Hotel
island insider What sets this new property apart from its competitors? With so many new hotels and competition in Bahrain and three new hotels opened up in Amwaj, including the Gulf Residence Amwaj, I believe the main reason why a potential client would choose us over the competition is because of the new concept of “hotel and residential option” combined with five star service, plus it is managed by Gulf Hotels Group. The hotel location

is also great being a stone’s throw away from the Amwaj Lagoon, which has pretty much everything from coffee shops to restaurants and even a bank. The hotel is also a five-minute drive to the airport and the new Dragon City.
Tell us three dining hotspots you enjoy in Bahrain and why? Hevea Café at Al A’ali Mall for a lazy Friday breakfast. Sato restaurant at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, when
craving for sushi; and Golestan restaurant in Sheraton Bahrain for a unique Persian taste.
What’s coming up for you for the rest of 2016? Painting is still my number one passion and a hidden world I love to be in. I have planned over and over again for a small exhibition to showcase my work of art and I think I would push it through this year. My family and friends have been pushing me to do it for a long time and I think this is the perfect time to do so.
