Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” ―- Gustave Flaubert
FACT Magazine Bahrain Edition • JUNE 2018 VOLUME 11, ISSUE 10
DIRECTOR OMAR SHAHEEN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES EDITOR-IN-CHIEF SHABANA ADAM (shabana@fact-magazine.com) ASSISTANT EDITOR
I
t’s no secret at all that this is my favourite issue of the year. Just speak the word “travel” around me and I’ll happily sit with you for hours to talk about why taking off to see the world is high up on my list of priorities. And it seems that travel is also of huge importance to the people of the Gulf. Be it the local or expat community, the chances are that some of your best conversations in Bahrain have revolved around a mutual love of travelling. There’s just something beautifully liberating about being plucked out of your everyday comfort zone and landing in a completely foreign place to see how different cultures live. With undiscovered destinations now opening up for tourism, we’ve rounded up some of the world’s best destinations that are seeing a travel revival and others that are newbies on the bucket list. Turn to p31 for #Hashtag# Travel Inspo and start your adventure today - be it solo, with family or a group of friends - there’s plenty of leisure, food, activities, beaches and more waiting! Of course, there’s just as much intrepid inspiration to awaken the travel bug as there is luxury vacays that blend the best of both worlds, seamlessly. If it’s this perfect balance of exploration and relaxation that you’re looking for, take note of our Eid Escapes (p44) where everything from island living to UNESCO sites and safari vibes can make for the perfect getaway during the Eid Al Fitr break. June is also the start of the most-anticipated sporting event of the year - the 2018 FIFA World Cup - and you can believe that Bahrain’s venues are going all out to make sure that you catch all the action live from Russia on the biggest screens, accompanied with the best food and beverages. Turn to World Cup Watch on p27 where we round up some of the social spots to get your footie fix. We’ve got your monthly dose of fashion, tech, dining and all the need-to-know events, openings and foodie deals for the next 30 days. Whilst planning my own summer abroad, I was constantly reminded that the freedom to hop on a plane and venture to somewhere new is a privilege that many people around the world still don’t have. So, let’s be cultural ambassadors and share travel stories as often as possible! As the meme says: catch flights, not feelings - and I’m all about that life. Happy wanderlusting!☺

BAHRAIN’S NEWEST 5-STAR RESORT Pristine beaches and a full range of entertainment, retail and conference facilities on offer, this will be the first 5-star retreat in Southwest Bahrain… AL SAHEL RESORT HAS ANNOUNCED the development of a new five-star resort on the southwest coast of Bahrain. The resort is the first phase of the Al Sahel development, to be complete within two years. This unique destination boasts 1.25 km of pristine coastline and will be nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while being within easy reach of all of the Kingdom’s major tourism destinations and transport links. Furthermore, its out-of-city location makes it Bahrain’s first ‘retreat’ style venue. Khalid Al Rumaihi, Chairman of Al Sahel Resorts, said: “The unique location, as well as high degree of privacy, enable us to serve regional audiences looking for exclusivity. Being the first of its kind in Bahrain, coupled with the high quality and variety of services and amenities on offer, it will allow us to capture the ‘longer-stay’ segment of visitors. “Tourism is one of the highest potential growth sectors for foreign investment, accounting for 10% of the total investment flows into the Kingdom last year,” he added. “In addition to Al Sahel, we are expecting 15 new four- and five-star hotels and resorts to open across Bahrain in the next two years, joining a wide range of existing luxury brands.” The five-star resort will offer an unrivalled level of seclusion and feature both room and villa-based accommodation, and a comprehensive range of entertainment and leisure components for the whole family including restaurants, water features and sports, cinema, teen smart room, kids club, meeting and conference services, sports and spa facilities. The wider destination will complement the resort and include leisure, retail 10

and entertainment options to provide a complete offering away from the city centre. Jumeirah Group, the global hospitality company and a member of Dubai Holding, has already signed a hotel management agreement to operate a luxury Jumeirah hotel and spa within the first phase of the development. Bahrain’s tourism sector witnessed rapid growth in 2017, with the total number of tourists visiting the Kingdom increasing by 11.9%. The Kingdom is seeing further enhancement to its tourism infrastructure to support this growth, which is set to play a significant role in Bahrain’s economic diversification and contributing 6.3% to the GDP. The Al Sahel Resort will continue to add new facilities, helping to drive tourism to the southwest coastal region of the Kingdom. ✤

SMALL SCREEN, BIG FILM ‘Lost’ by Hassan Abdulla Hasan Ali Ebrahim and ‘The Black Circle’ by Adullah Mohsen Abdullah – both from Bahrain are two of the three winners who took home the grand prize at the first ever Small Screen, Big Film festival after voting by the public and acclaimed jury members from across the globe. RUNNING ON THE BRITISH COUNCIL’S YouTube channel, film fans from across the globe were given the opportunity to watch 12 shortlisted films created by young people from the Gulf, and vote for their favourite. The three winning shorts were selected through a combination of audience voting and scores from the acclaimed jury. Rehana Mughal, Senior Programme Manager, Culture and Sport at British Council, said: “This is the inaugural edition of the festival, and so we are thrilled to have seen such a positive response from audiences around the globe, with more than 175,000 film views across the course of the festival. The strength of the entries we received was impressive, and I’d like to congratulate Hassan, Abdullah and Azza for their standout short films. “We also extend our thanks to partners Intofilm, the London Film School and our jury for their exceptional support throughout this project,” she added. “We look forward to watching them continue to pursue their filmmaking goals, and hope Small Screen, Big Film has given all those who submitted work an opportunity and confidence to take their skills forward.” A new platform for young and aspiring filmmakers in the Gulf, Small Screen, Big Film is one of several initiatives under the British Council’s Culture and Sports programme, a three-year initiative aimed at promoting active participation in culture and 12

sports to encourage greater youth engagement, team work, volunteering, female participation and leadership, diversity and inclusion. Abdullah Mohsen Abdullah, winner of the 18-25 category, said: “It feels great to see your hard work appreciated! Shooting a movie through a phone was both difficult and fun at the same time. I usually use professional cameras and equipment but for this one, only used a smart phone and natural lighting which was a unique experience that I learned a lot from. This award is a huge achievement and a great boost for us to keep developing our skills and create more films, be it locally or internationally.” Hassan Abdulla Hasan Ali Ebrahim, winner of the under 18s category, said: “Regardless of the limitations of filming using a smartphone, it was a great experience and an exciting challenge to break the routine. The competition is unique, as it gives creative young people an opportunity to explore the world of filmmaking and to develop their talents in the field.” Year-round grab a smartphone and tell your story with the short film guide, produced in collaboration with IntoFilm. ✤

N
othing quite prepares you for your first time in the Maldives. No matter how many times we had Google searched Niyama Private Islands, coming faceto-face with the resort’s sandy shores hugged by clear blue waters was a sight that far exceeded all of our real life expectations. We’re greeted by Niyama staff at Male airport and taken for light refreshments at the property’s arrivals lounge. It’s packed with delicious snacks and drinks, a large, cosy seating area and showers for those who may have come off a long flight and need a relaxing rinse. The best bit? You look right onto the docking area for the seaplanes – and soon, we’re hopping onto one for our 45-minute journey to the picture-perfect Niyama Private Islands. For those who may have a fear of small planes, you can rest-assured that safety is paramount before departing and, surprisingly, the seaplane ride is one of the best naps we’ve ever had in the air! On arrival, staff wait with cool drinks and cold towels, and we’re assigned our very own Thakuru – a member of the Niyama team who acts as our very own personal guide for the trip. In fact, this is the Maldivian Butler Service that’s offered with every room at Niyama. Always on hand (just a phone call away), our Thakuru is Camille, a polite and friendly lady who makes everything from needing a buggy to booking a spa treatment and arranging our excursions an absolutely easy request. We’re impressed from start to finish!
BEACHFRONT LIVIN’ When it comes to accommodation, Niyama Private Islands is the embodiment of what you imagine the Maldives has to offer. From beach suites to ocean pavilions and the very exclusive over water seclusion of The Crescent (ideal for large groups and families – 14 adults and eight children to be precise), the resort ticks all the boxes of room type, making sure that guests have an abundance of choice. We check into the lavish Beach Studio with direct beach access and sunrise views (how Maldives does that sound?). There’s too much to take in, but we’re especially BLOWN AWAY by the open-air bathroom which takes up the space of an entire garden. The outdoor rain shower and huge bathtub are literally made for those instagrammable posts to garner all the FOMO and likes from your followers. Tropical plants line the walls of this heavenly space, easily transporting you to a faraway destination, where it feels like you have access to your very own waterfall. I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E. There’s a covered shower option too for any rainy days! Our next favourite area is on the private deck which leads right onto the beach. Sun loungers have got our names written all over them – we spend much time here relaxing and topping up the tan. Whilst a Dhoni-

shaped swing is the most tranquil spot to curl up in, with a good book. Inside, it’s space galore! Aside from storage, you’ve got a massive king bed as well as a beautiful chaise longue to lounge on. However, the standouts of this room were in the little details. These included an array of high-tech toys and gourmet treats, creating an indoor playground that we reveled in to the max. We’re talking popcorn machine – YES – a full-sized fridge housing homemade ice cream – DOUBLE YES – and a fabulous selection of hot and cold beverages as well as snacks like our favourite, cassava chips – SO MUCH YES! It’s, hands down, the best mini bar of any hotel we’ve ever stayed in. To top this off, alongside your standard amenities like cosy slippers and bath robes, you’re given mosquito repellent, extra adapters, a night light and more to make sure that every single one of your needs is met during the stay. It’s this attention to detail and pleasant surprises that further elevated our stay at Niyama. SPA GOALS There are spas and then there’s Drift Spa, a labyrinth of tranquil walkways and greenery that winds all the way to the beach where six over water treatment rooms with lagoon views stand beautifully. There are two further treatment sanctuaries with private gardens, outdoor bath, rain shower and daybed as well as a relaxation area with lime tree garden, sauna, steam baths, plunge pools, Jacuzzis and Vitality juice bar. As far as world-class spas go, this place offers rituals from around the globe and bespoke therapies with products by Anne Semonin, Intraceuticals, Aromatherapy Associates and Margaret Dabbs. A Signature Niyama Massage is just what we need to take our holiday mood to all new levels of serene. A blissful coconut oil soothes our tired muscles, helping us fall into a deep slumber. Afterwards, we’re reenergised with hot ginger tea, completely refreshed and ready to do some more exploring! fact magazine

DINING FOR DAYS Just because you’re in the Maldives, at a 5-star resort in one of the most secluded spots in the Indian Ocean, doesn’t mean that the gastronomy is slacking. It’s very much the opposite at Niyama, where the food game is, literally, STRONG. World cuisines are represented through the resort’s nine dining outlets, and as true food connoisseurs, we can testify to the amazing dishes being plated up at each venue. EDGE Honeymooners, families who want a treat and anyone with a taste for the finer things in life, Edge is going to be THE place for you (and your Snapchat!). Whisked five minutes away by speedboat and you’ll arrive at the exclusive overwater restaurant, Edge. Focusing on fresh local seafood, including only local Maldivian reef fish, prepare your palates for a culinary tour. Not only are dishes intricately presented, the combination of ingredients is sophisticated and high-quality fine dining at its best. During our visit, a set degustation menu reveals distinct tastes to choose from. The creamy Asparagus Soup and the top-notch Fresh Tortellini, Crusted Scallops are taste-bud-stealers at the table. We can’t get enough! TRIBAL Our absolute favourite food experience at Niyama had to be the venue that whipped up the most exotic flavours and unusual dishes. A menu of African, Central and South American cuisines amidst blazing fires is what you’ll find here. A genuine feeling of being in the Masai takes over when you enter the venue. Our waiter, Lucas, is an absolute joy. He explains the dishes that we enquire about and makes some good recommendations. Try more unusual concoctions like Warm Ostrich Bobotie with a heavenly nectar of peach chutney, sweet peri peri sauce, and tomatillo confit or the Ox Tongue Berbere; spicy tender ox tongue, berbere sauce, cucumber, anchovy relish, parsley, micro herbs, pickled onion. Our highlights were the Shrimp and Sweet Lobster Ceviche – super fresh, the Jerked Jumbo Prawns, with sugarcane, tortilla, pimento, habanero, lime, and hibiscus, and the Brahman Beef, which is braised beef cheek, sweet potatoes, heirloom carrots, and fermented dosa – deliciously tender. Venezuelan Moist Chocolate Cake with ginger, honey, caramelised banana, lemon, lime and alfajores sorbet, is the star of the desserts and a sweet ending to a memorable meal. NEST As far as dining experiences go, this place takes the prize for most beautiful and intriguing design. Climb up the stairs and into the tree house that is Nest, to navigate the jungle on a walkway of wooden paths amongst the treetops. Avant-garde presentations by Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian chefs will grace your table in what we truly believe is one of the most spectacular restaurants in the Maldives, or dare we say, the world. Our Asian feast began with gorgeous sushi and sashimi alongside Lobster Spring Roll and Chicken Flower Dumplings. The Som Tam Poo Nim - green papaya salad, carrot caviar, chilli, peanut, dried shrimp, and tamarind sauce is everything that we wanted it to be. Light, fresh and packed with all the goodness of carefully-selected ingredients. 56

Massaman Nua is slow-cooked beef cheeks, potato, shallots, and roasted peanuts, in a mouthwatering curry. We haven’t tasted meat as tender as this in a long time – highly recommended. For a theatrical meal, the teppanyaki table is a must-visit spot at lunch time – watch the chef play with fire as your choice of meat, seafood and veggies are grilled to perfection. Whenever you visit Nest, make sure to order the roasted banana ice cream – we’ve never tasted anything like it. So yummy! EPICURE If you live for hotel breakfasts, you’d better believe that Niyama knows how to do a good, delectable spread. Flaky pastries, tantalising egg dishes, a cereal bar, fresh fruit counter, healthy juices and SO much more open the morning to a simply divine start. You can follow with fruit salads made to order from the familiar to the tropical, or an omelette embracing fine cheese and a chiffonade of garden-fresh herbs. The coffee is freshly brewed whilst the juices provide a muchneeded a.m. boost. The restaurant overlooks the hotel’s pool and powdery beach, right onto the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean. From the extensive breakfast buffet to a la carte lunches and dinners, Epicure is infinity poolside indulgence at its best. SUBSIX A complete underwater playground, Subsix will take your breath away. Six metres below the water, you’ll witness everything from Parrotfish swim past shoals of Moorish Idols, Moray eels slide through the lagoon, Groupers make goliath appearances amidst the rainbow of butterflyfish and damselfish, while the resident Hawksbill turtle glides in for rare visit. Walk down a three-tier staircase to find a restaurant designed to make you feel like you’re in the ocean. Chandeliers hang to give the illusion of shining coral whilst mixologists concoct all kinds of liquid creations at the clam-inspired bar. Take a seat on the soft anemone chairs and tuck into a champagne breakfast, a subaquatic lunch, or a gourmet dinner followed by the popular glow party illuminating the night alongside the theatre of the reef. fact magazine

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND It’s clear why Niyama’s motto is: Welcome to Nature’s Playground. The resort is has a plethora of activities on both land and sea, and for all ages – enough to keep even the fussiest of travellers entertained. Here are just some of the best excursions and pastimes that we’d recommend: - SNORKELLING WITH TURTLES What lies beneath the surface? Go deeper into the mysteries and secrets with the Marine Biologist as your personal guide. Immerse yourself in the house reef and speedboat to spectacular sites. On our morning ride out to sea, our instructor and the boat’s captain go over safety procedures and reassure us that this is going to be one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Little did we know how true this was until hopping over the edge of the boat and starting our soothing snorkel session. We spot intricate bouquets of coral and groups of colourful fish as well as the stars of the underwater world here; the elegant Hawksbill turtle who glide effortlessly just beneath us. If you’ve got a waterproof camera, TAKE IT WITH YOU! - ADOPT A CORAL You would think that being in the Maldives means miles and miles of sea that’s home to the most striking coral – think again. Thanks to Niyama’s coral regeneration programme, life under the ocean is kept alive and well cared for – and you’re encouraged to be a part of it. Snorkel to the coral nursery and select your ‘baby’. Give your chosen little coral a name and help cultivate it. Together, you lend a hand in maintaining the rich but fragile ecosystem for which the Maldives is so famous. Receive a certificate and follow up images to watch your adoptee grow and thrive. It’s a forever souvenir! - SUNSET CRUISE Possibly one of the best excursions we embarked on at Niyama. Whether you go for a Dream Dhoni (an exotic curved sailing vessel) or a sophisticated yacht, get ready for an unforgettable evening. Bubbly and canapés accompany the trip alongside friendly and expert staff who will keep an eye out for the dolphins at sea. You’ll sail the blue waters and pass small deserted islands all while watching the dramatic sunset and how the Maldives does day to night – it’s a spectacular view that you’ll surely want to capture on camera. - WATER SPORTS Now, when we say that Niyama is a haven for on-water activities, we’re not exaggerating. You name it and they’ve got it! The resort’s FLOAT programme has an adrenaline-surged array of water sports: jet skiing, water skiing, mono-skiing, wakeboarding, knee boarding, catamarans, windsurfing, kitesurfing, parasailing, fun tubes and so much more. Surfers can catch the most glorious waves whilst those who want to take things a little slow can hop in a glass kayak or get their adrenalin going with the 20km/ph underwater rocket. The choice is yours! ✤ 58

Look Alive Out There By Sloane Crosley
SYNTH-POP
DANCE-POP/ GRIME
No Shame
No Shame
By Chvrches
Coming at us with a whole lot of energy and an unmatched intensity, Chvrches’ newest album is here to shake things up! In their third full-length effort, the Glasgow trio gets real about the world we live in and they have a lot to say. An album about growing up and coming to terms with the great as well as awful things in the world, Love Is Dead takes you on an unfiltered musical journey. Catchy pop and a typically powerful performance from primary vocalist Lauren Mayberry, Get Out sticks to what Chvrches know best. While the song fails to push any boundaries that the band hasn’t pushed before, it’s definitely one for the weekend party playlist. Featuring the most pop they’ve ever produced and a collabo with Grammy award-winning producer Greg Kurstin, the band is definitely treading uncharted territory. Commencing with an enigmatic intro, My Enemy makes perfect use of space and contrast, both vocally and instrumentally. The youthful and vibrant collaboration of Chvrches and Matt Berninger is bound to tickle every listener’s fancy. Taking risks and producing brand new sounds, the band has come a long way since their huge first studio album. This is a pleasant listen!
By Lily Allen
Featuring confessional pop on her own terms, Allen’s latest release is a far cry from her spiky first two albums. With contemporary, minimal dancepop that references Drake, Jamie xx and dancehall, she covers everything from the breakdown of her marriage, her depression as well as fears about her children. Offering a dark, real look at British party culture, Trigger Bang is a weird mix of nostalgia, liberation and exhaustion. Also featuring London rapper Giggs, the languid, worldweary pop song is going to give you all the feels! Away from her trademark wordplay, the album features a whole lot of introspective new lyrics and a refreshing new sound. Laying down her grievances in plain, heartfelt language, Higher sees Allen condemning a tainted relationship. Featuring stunning verses and heavenly vocals, the track is our new favourite heartbreak anthem! While fans had to be patient for her big comeback, Allen has definitely delivered with her fourth studio album.
Filled with a number of relatable but eccentric misadventures, Sloane Crosley’s brand-new collection of essays is exactly what you need to read after a long day at work. Featuring her trademark hilarity, wit and charm, Look Alive Out There talks about everything from scaling active volcanoes and befriending strangers to staring down the barrel of the fertility gun and playing herself on Gossip Girl.

hat we love so much about our test driving here at Fact Magazine (besides from getting to go fast!), is that we get to experience such a diverse range of automobile offerings. It is interesting to see how all classes and calibres of vehicle are developing and what they have to show us inside, outside and on the tarmac. It is also always great to see the gains that are being made towards a more eco-friendly motorcar future. With all this in mind, the latest vehicle to be put through its paces was the 2018 Toyota Prius and we have to say, it gave us a few pleasant surprises. Upon first inspection, we were immediately surprised by the presence of this fourth generation Prius. The body is sculpted in a manner that effortlessly enhances the numerous aerodynamic features of the vehicle, including its active front grille shutter that closes at higher speeds. This allows for minimal drag and contributes to the car’s efficiency, making for a comfortable and quiet ride. Shapely LED headlights, taillights and running lights are sported around the vehicle, ensuring a well-lit journey after dark. Complete with aggressive yet flowing lines and an overall sleek appearance, this car looks like it has real purpose. Taking a look inside, the spacious cabin boasts a modern style and premium materials that have been used throughout. The front leather seats are both heated and comfortable, featuring deep bolsters, whilst the rear seats come complete with a 60/40 split folding system, which greatly increases the already roomy storage capacity of the boot. The leather-clad steering wheel is also heated and the shape feels just right in the hands. Dual 4.2” multi-information displays can be operated from the steering wheel and allow for easy access of information throughout the driving experience. Complete with air-conditioning enhanced with temperature control, power windows, three 12V DC power connections and many other great functions ensure this car’s convenience, allowing one to relax and focus on the roads. Voted the World Green Car at the 2017 New York International Auto Show, the Toyota Prius comes equipped with an Eco drive monitor that helps to maximise fuel efficiency. It reaches an outstanding 26.1 km/litre which makes it superior to any other hybrid vehicle in its class. This car lets drivers travel more than 1,000 kilometres on a single tank of gas with a full battery charge. The Prius can also be operated for up to 40km in pure Electric Vehicle mode, which means, most of your daily running around can be accomplished without a single drop of petrol. On top of all this, it is extremely fun to drive! The swift and seamless acceleration and the smooth, quiet and powerful nature of the new Prius is surprising to anyone experiencing it for the first time. Toyota unveiled a new hybrid system design for the use of a dual motor-generator drive system, with this car. This system boosts acceleration

It comes available with safety systems including lane departure alert with steering assist function, pre-collisions system with pedestrian detection function, forward collision warning, automatic emergency breaking, a backup camera, direct tire pressure monitoring and seven airbags, amongst other features. These safety aspects of the vehicle combined with its great looks, convenient and tasteful layout, eco-friendly nature as well as a super exciting driving experience, makes the Prius the complete package. VOLVO’S NEXT GENERATION INFOTAINMENT Volvo Cars has announced it is working with Google to embed the voice-controlled Google Assistant, Google Play Store, Google Maps and other Google services into its next-generation Sensus infotainment system, based on Google’s Android operating system. Volvo Cars’ partnership with Google will further enhance the way Volvo customers engage with and interact with their cars. Apps and services developed by Google and Volvo Cars are embedded in the car, plus thousands of additional apps are available through the Google Play Store that is optimised and adapted for Android-based car infotainment systems. Since the next generation of Sensus will run on Android, new apps and software updates will be available in real-time and can be automatically applied. This allows future Volvo cars to react to customer needs and offer drivers up-to-date information and predictive services. “Bringing Google services into Volvo cars will accelerate innovation in connectivity and boost our development in applications and connected services,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President of research and development at Volvo Cars. “Soon, Volvo drivers will have direct access to thousands of incar apps that make daily life easier and the connected in-car experience more enjoyable.”
The Google Assistant provides a central voice interface for the car that allows drivers to control in-car functions such as air conditioning, and use apps to play music and send messages even when the car is not connected to the internet. This integration contributes to reducing driver distraction, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road at all times. Google Maps will also enable the next generation of Sensus to provide refreshed map and traffic data in real time, keeping drivers informed about upcoming traffic situations and proactively suggesting alternative routes. The company also continues to develop its own apps, software and connected services within the Volvo Car Group, using its growing force of software engineers. ✤

A
nyone who has been observing the Holy Month of Ramadan knows that when Iftar time arrives, all the cravings set in. Be it for hot oozing cheese samboosa, tender ouzi or melt-inthe-mouth kunafa, chances are that only good food will satisfy your appetite. There’s one such place that understands this simple need down to a tee. Of course, we’re talking about none other than Köşebaşı. A Turkish delight of its own, the restaurant is PACKED on the day that we decide to visit for Iftar. We’re talking every single table is taken up by families and friends, eagerly awaiting the Maghrib call to prayer. This must be a good sign, right? Correct! The tables are already adorned in dates and dried apricot as well as bottles of water – so you’ve got everything that you need to begin the soon-to-be culinary journey. We opt for the Iftar Set Menu for two and – to our pleasant surprise – the food just keeps on coming. Begin with your choice of soup which is either the soup of the day or the Ezo Gelin – traditional Turkish red lentil soup. We can literally feel the soup swim it’s way down our throats – it’s like a warm hug from the inside. Delish! The cold starters are next up and it’s a visual feast for the senses. Imagine: dolma (vine leaves stuffed with rice and vegetables), the Turkish take on baba ganoush (grilled eggplant mixed roasted red capsicum, Turkish spices and sautéed with garlic olive oil), and what was by far our favourite of them all – the Kisir which is made up of soaked bulgar wheat mixed with capsicum, parsley and green onion – served with a lush pomegranate sauce. The bread is fresh, hot and fluffy – and we scoop up the kisir many times in glee. Like a child obsessed with candy – this dish had the palates at the table doing cartwheels – SO GOOD! Hot starters are equally pleasing. The meat is every carnivore’s treat, served with a light yogurt and cucumber. Whilst the filo pastry stuffed with cheese and a number of Turkish spices is a texture trove with a crispy exterior and gooey centre – we loved it! With no exaggeration, the fattoush salad is one of the freshest we’ve had in a long time. Every ingredient is crisp and the fact that it’s tossed in lemon, olive oil and pomegranate dressing, gives a whole new meaning to salads being healthy but also VERY delicious. Your mains are an amalgamation of Köşebaşı bestsellers – there’s tender chicken cubes, special lamb kebap and marinated chicken slices. There’s also a dish of the day which can be anything from a succulent mixed grill to a hearty rice and meat dish. All we know is that this day the meat was tasty beyond words and we felt incredibly satisfied by the time dessert rolled around. Stealing the entire show is the two fabulous desserts: 90

ftar at Ramada Manama City Centre is held at the beautiful Reem Al Bawadi restaurant. Walk into what could easily be a cosy living room in a welcoming Lebanese home and you’ll find a lovely spread of authentic Arabic-inspired food and international favourites waiting to be indulged. After all, this family-friendly Levantine restaurant is renowned for authentic Middle Eastern food, warm Arabic hospitality and its shisha experience. It’s a big venue with two main dining areas, separated by a wall and grand wooden doors – one side being non-smoking. There’s an expansive outdoor terrace too, which is a popular evening hotspot in the cooler months. What we noticed immediately about Reem Al Bawadi is that all the interiors reminded us of a previous trip to Beirut. The stained glass windows, the ceramic plates, the classic paintings, the pretty lanterns and the feature stone bricks are all components that you would find in every corner of Lebanon. The seating is comfy, with plenty of room on the tables for all the amount of food you wish to consume. At iftar, this is a bonus! A central buffet station is decorated in gorgeous Middle Eastern-patterned cloth and holds fresh salads and cold mezze on one end. Our culinary iftar journey starts with hummus, baba ghanoush, vine leaves, fattoush, a lush yogurt and cucumber mix and a side of leafy greens. Ingredients are fresh and filling, and we enjoy a healthy beginning to breaking our fast. From the hot mezze, we try samboosa and kibbeh, the first is stuffed with a veggie filling whilst the latter boasts a delish meaty centre. In fact, mezze is created to encourage sharing and conversation between diners – and, lo and behold, all that we savoured was definitely a talking point. Particular standouts included the super fresh watermelon and feta salad and the decadent chickpea salad, both of which were palate-pleasing appetisers after a long day of fasting. The buffet transcends into the mains with a huge variety of everything from mouthwatering beef lasagna, tender lamb ouzi, stuffed vegetables, mixed grill items including kebab and chicken as well as many more carnivorous concoctions. We especially enjoyed the chicken drumsticks, the chicken piccata and the grilled fish with garlic lemon sauce – there is something 94

delicious to satisfy every taste bud. More importantly, an element that’s missing at a number of iftars in the country – this place has a live cooking station where pasta dishes are whipped up and made-to-order – a nice hot main that every diner can appreciate. If you’re there with a sweet tooth, you can rest assured that there are plenty of dessert options to fulfill the cravings. Think comfort food like hot Umm Ali and chocolate and red velvet cake, as well as Arabic favourites like basbousa and kunafa, and more worldly classics like crème caramel and chocolate chip cookies. There’s fresh fruit including various melon, orange, and more. With a nice cup of coffee or green tea, you can end your iftar meal on a memorable note. Though service lacked enthusiasm and could be more efficient, the food made up for it. We also loved seeing a number of families gathered at the table to break fast together – a lovely embodiment of what iftar should be, and exactly the homely vibe that Ramada City Centre Manama has to offer this Ramadan. ✤ GO: IFTAR IS SERVED FROM SUNSET TO 8PM. PRICED AT BD10.500. CALL 1710 4000 FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION.

No Fried Samosas!
Summer Holiday Ready!
Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.
Georgina Jennsen is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. a social media influencer who loves all things luxurious.
Oh, the weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth as I say to my clients: “No fried samosas to break your fast”. Yes, Ramadan has been well under way, and the unhealthy eating begins. So once again I get from my clients, but Yvonne this, but Yvonne that; I just smile, and they know that no matter what they say I will not change my mind as there are plenty of healthy ways to break your fast and fried samosas isn’t one of them. The look of disappointment when I suggest dates with a big glass of water followed by fruit and Harira soup… Today I had a conversation with one of my clients who tried to persuade me that having a burger to break her fast wasn’t too bad, she could tell by the look on my face that this wasn’t going to fly with me. If you must have samosas, find a healthy version, which is not fried but cooked in the oven. If you must have a burger try a black bean burger – yummy and good for you. Unfortunately, a lot of people gain weight at this time of year as they over indulge on unhealthy foods and make really bad diet choices; don’t be one of them. Don’t forget to continue working out but remember this is not the time to try something new. Do enough to preserve your fitness level. You may find doing cardio feels hard so cut down and do more body weight and resistance training. A belated Ramadan Mubarak! ✤
I’ve heard it said that much of the delight we derive from taking a holiday actually happens before we’ve even set foot on a plane. Studies show that the act of simply planning our travels and imagining ourselves in our dream destination can bring us more pleasure than any other part of the trip. And when you’re as organisationally-OCD as both my hubby and I are, this pre-trip happiness can really reach new heights. With this in mind, our summer holiday this year is shaping up to be a corker. London’s calling, for a few days on either side, and it seems we’ve got a theme happening there. So far we’re booked into London’s oldest restaurant, Rules (circa 1798), as well as the first Indian restaurant in the U.K., Veeraswamy. From London we head to Catalonia, and up to the northern coastal town of Roses. Our apartment enjoys sweeping sea views from the terrace, and I can already hear the ice cubes clinking in my long cool sundowner as I take in the stunning scenery. Roses is followed by Girona. It’s a magical walled city with medieval architecture and teenytiny winding city streets, surrounded by some of the very finest restaurants. Barcelona is next, and we’re heading there armed with a VERY long list of eateries we simply must visit. I can almost hear my tummy rumbling already. Happy summer holidays! xx ✤
