Located within the state-of-the-art SAYACORP Tower in downtown Manama, the hotel boasts 98 meticulously designed rooms, including one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, as well as four-bedroom penthouses featuring private outdoor swimming pools. Each apartment offers stunning views with floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as a fully equipped kitchen and a dedicated Conrad concierge.

“We are delighted to start welcoming guests to Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour, our third Hilton property and a first for the Conrad brand in the country,” said Guy Hutchinson, President, Middle East and Africa, Hilton. “Each room in the hotel is a suite, providing guests with the comforts of home alongside intuitive service and luxurious leisure facilities.”

Diners can enjoy delicious dishes while listening to DJ beats and taking in the skyline views from the stylish poolside restaurant. In the lobby, Café Tomo offers a variety of hot beverages, finger sandwiches, cakes and pastries, while Trade Room on the mezzanine floor is an elegant, librarystyle bar inspired by the hotel's location in Bahrain Financial Harbour and the country’s rich financial history.

Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour is not just a luxury hotel, it also strives to connect guests with the local community by featuring a carefully curated collection of contemporary Bahraini art. A JOURNEY OF ARTISTIC EXPLORATION

Explore the creative world of contemporary art at Al Riwaq Art Space with their latest exhibition, engaging/ circumstance, which promises a truly unique and enriching experience.

Get a glimpse into the mindset of an artist as Al Riwaq Art Space showcase the culminating works of their ‘Application 003’ Art Residency programme. The ongoing exhibition, titled engaging/circumstance, will run until July 18 at their premises in Gufool.

The exhibit will feature the exploratory artworks of seven distinguished artists: Waheeda Malullah, Virginie Dreyer, Aziz Jamal, Shaden Al Mutlaq, Hayat Hasan, Ahmed Al Kuwaiti and Ahmed Al Asad. The theme, Engaging with Circumstance, means facing and accepting the dynamic of a situation. The collection of installations invites viewers to immerse into the multi-layered stories that each artist presents. Through their thought-provoking pieces, these artists challenge us to confront and embrace the realities of our diverse cultures, values, upbringing and personal histories. This offers a profound insight and reflects the complexities and richness of our shared existence, urging us to acknowledge and accept circumstances as they are, rather than as we wish them to be.

Application 003 was an intensive 12-week residency, which took a critical approach to art making, research and production. The participating artists engaged in a rigorous

process that combined mentorship, collaborative projects and individual artistic exploration. They had access to a variety of learning opportunities, including workshops, talks and courses.

These sessions facilitated research into contemporary art and explored constructive critique. The artists benefited from both formal and informal group discussions, where they shared ideas and received feedback. The residency not only helped them to advance their careers and broaden their horizons but also fostered a sense of community and shared experiences.

With support from Al Riwaq, the programme also provided individual studio spaces in their residency studio compound, enabling the artists to focus on research, discussion, project development and production.

Al Riwaq is open from Saturday to Thursday, 10am to 3pm and 8pm to 11pm. ✤

The new restaurant, an appealing sea-to-table dining concept named Dawa by Roaya Saleh, is set to open its doors at Bahrain Harbour, the vibrant new downtown development with world-class amenities. Dawa will be located in the iconic waterfront destination of Bahrain Harbour's Harbour Heights, which has been developed by Infracorp. DIVE INTO THRILLS

With its warm climate and crystal-clear waters, Bahrain is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, offering a variety of fun and thrilling activities, including jet skiing, kitesurfing and wakeboarding.

Jet Skiing

One of the most popular activities in the Kingdom, jet skiing is a must-try for an adrenaline hit. With the wind in your hair and the spray of the sea, jet skiing offers a sense of freedom and excitement. The island’s numerous marinas and beaches, including those at Water Garden City Beach, Amwaj Islands, Marassi Beach and Durrat Al Bahrain, provide ample opportunities to explore the coastline. Whether a novice or an experienced rider, everyone can enjoy this sport and there are plenty of professional jet ski rental services available, as well as tour operators and hotel beach clubs where sessions can be booked.

Kitesurfing

This extreme sport has been rapidly gaining popularity on the island, thanks to consistent winds and shallow waters. Kitesurfing combines elements of surfing, paragliding, windsurfing and skateboarding, all in one, for a unique and challenging experience. Places like Amwaj Kite Beach, Bahrain Bay, Budaiya Beach, Nurana and the beaches near the Bahrain Yacht Club, are popular hotspots. Skate Shack have been the pioneers of kitesurfing on the island and they offer everything you need for the sport. They provide free lessons to anyone purchasing kitesurfing gear from them and you can also book individual lessons. Those wanting to try their hand at this exciting sport should note that the kitesurfing season usually ends in July and restarts in September when the wind picks up.

Wakeboarding

This is another exhilarating sport that has found a home in Bahrain. The calm waters around the island, particularly near Al Dar Islands, are ideal for this activity. Combining the skills of snowboarding, surfing and water skiing, wakeboarding involves riding a board over the surface of the water, while being towed by a motorboat. With local operators providing top-notch equipment and lessons, both beginners and seasoned wakeboarders can enjoy the thrill of carving through the water and catching some air. For an even more stimulating experience, book a wakeboarding session at Bahrain Wake, the island's first cable wake park, located at Durrat Al Bahrain. Providing a unique setup where wakeboarders are pulled by an overhead cable system, they offer lessons for beginners, as well as options for single and double sessions and a full day pass, with equipment included.

KEEP CALM AND COOL ON

The Kingdom offers an array of water sports that blend excitement with tranquillity. For those seeking more serene experiences, here are some must-try activities that promise both enjoyment and relaxation.

Kayaking

A favourite for many in Bahrain, Kayaking is perfect for solo adventurers or groups looking for an enjoyable outing, with calm waters around the island providing the perfect setting for this activity. Whether you are paddling through the peaceful mangroves at Tubli or exploring the sandy shores at Al Dar, kayaking allows you to connect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Various spots, such as Amwaj Islands, Marassi Beach, Water Garden City Beach and Bahrain Bay, all offer kayak rentals and guided tours suitable for all skill levels

Doughnut Boat Rides

For a unique and fun-filled experience, the Doughnut Boat Ride in Bahrain Bay is a must-try. Operated by Dough Bahrain, these circular inflatable boats with a centre table, resemble giant donuts. Powered by a small engine, they allow you to cruise at a leisurely pace and socialise with friends over a New York-style pizza, all while soaking in the surroundings.

Pedal Boat Rides

For a more laid-back water experience, pedal boat rides offer a leisurely pace to explore Bahrain’s waterways. Easy to operate and ideal for families and couples, these boats allow you to pedal at your own pace while taking in the views. Bahrain Bay, Water Garden City Beach and the Marassi Beach are popular spots for pedal boating, where you can enjoy the striking skyline and gentle breezes in a relaxed, fun-filled environment.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)

This is another popular sport in the Kingdom. Standing atop a large, stable board, you can paddle your way across the tranquil waters, enjoying the gentle rhythm of the waves. A wonderful way to unwind, SUP is also a fantastic workout and even great for practising your yoga poses. Several locations provide excellent conditions for this, including Bahrain Bay, Water Garden City Beach, Amwaj Islands and Marassi Beach.

Mega SUP

For a social twist on paddle boarding, try the Mega SUP. This oversized board can accommodate multiple people, making it ideal for groups looking for a shared adventure. Paddling together on the Mega SUP encourages teamwork and adds an element of fun. Available at Bahrain Bay, this activity is ideal for families, friends and even corporate team-building events.

AN IMPRESSIVE DUAL LAUNCH

FACT spent five days in the captivating Korean city of Seoul to witness the unveiling of two exceptional Genesis luxury SUVs.

• BEHIND THE WHEEL
BEHIND THE WHEEL •

In recent years, we have been keeping a close eye on the rise of the highly impressive Genesis brand, a car manufacturer seeming to improve with every new offering produced. As the luxury vehicle brand of the Hyundai Motor Company, they have firmly established themselves as global contenders in the upmarket segment, having produced some of the finest high-end saloons, coupes, convertibles and SUVs on the roads today.

FACT recently travelled as guests to the home of Genesis in Seoul, South Korea, to attend the global launch of the GV80 Coupe and the unveiling of the new redesigned GV80, We want to take this opportunity to give a big thank you to Genesis Bahrain for making this first-class adventure a reality.

Seoul, South Korea

From the moment we touched down, we found South Korea to be a beautiful and efficient country filled with friendly and respectful people, including our gracious hosts at Genesis, who ensured we felt welcome and comfortable throughout our stay. Immediately apparent was the huge number of Genesis vehicles driving on the city streets. There is no doubt that locals and visitors alike have warmly embraced this homegrown brand.

Launch Night

After a quick unpack at the magnificent Grand Walkerhill Hotel, Seoul, we were chauffeured around the city, enjoying activities such as the fascinating Genesis Experience Centre Suji Tour. On our first evening in South Korea, we attended the highly anticipated launch of the GV80 Coupe and the reveal of the new redesigned GV80, held at the prestigious Seoul Wave Art Centre in the city’s famed Hangang Park.

Redesigned GV80

As fans of the original GV80, we were intrigued to discover what the manufacturers had accomplished with the redesign.

Updated Exterior Design

The improved GV80 features numerous exterior upgrades, including a freshly designed Two-Line Crest Grille complemented by the signature Two-Line headlamps. We appreciated how the master crafters at Genesis have refined the overall elegance of this luxury SUV through the now smoother corner lines of the Crest Grille, along with the sleek look of the headlamps – made possible with MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology.

Striking design elements, like the larger air intakes and a wide skid plate on the front bumper, enhance the refined and robust persona of the updated GV80. One of our favourite external features has to be the guilloché-patterned emblem that adds a graceful finishing touch to an already alluring SUV.

We took in the new chrome trim that extends seamlessly through the sides, helping the car exude a powerful presence from bumper to bumper. Noise-absorbing 22-inch, multi-spoke dark grey matte wheels contribute to the SUV’s solid stance and ensure best-in-class ride tranquillity.

The impressive nature of the vehicle continues at the back end, where muffler tips integrated into the bumper further elevate the car’s sophisticated design. A distinctive V-shaped chrome trim adds to the futuristic look of the model, while the lower part of the bumper makes a statement with its bold body-coloured line.

Enhanced Interior Design

The beauty of the GV80’s exterior flows effortlessly into the firstclass cabin, where we were welcomed by comfortable seating,

an impressive array of modern features, quality materials and various design enhancements. It became obvious the GV80 has been designed to elevate the daily lives of owners through an all-encompassing, in-car luxury experience.

The two-tone-coloured steering wheel has been immaculately designed and feels faultless in hand. We also admired the new elevated pedal design, the improved crash pads and the wellcrafted centre console featuring Nappa leather and genuine wood. Standing out amongst the extensive list of advanced tech features are the 14.6-inch rear seat smart entertainment system, the Bang & Olufsen sound system and the impressive 27-inchwide OLED display that smoothly integrates the cluster and the Audio, Video, Navigation (AVN) screen.

Other must-mention internal features include the seamless design of the centre facia, the wide-angle digital centre mirror, the redesigned crystal-like Shift By Wire (SBW), the improved wireless smartphone charging tray and the touch-based Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system that gifts the driver with extreme ease of control.

Improved Performance

On our second day in South Korea, we took the upgraded GV80 out for a spin.

Our model was equipped with the potent 3.5-litre turbo engine, complemented by near-perfect suspension, handling and braking capabilities. This enables the new GV80 to deliver 380hp and 54.0kgf·m of torque.

To us, however, the most impressive performance upgrade was the overall smoothness of the ride, made possible by the Preview Electronic Control Suspension System (Preview ECS), which optimises control of the suspension by anticipating road conditions, and the Engine Mounting Control Unit (EMCU), which detects road surfaces to reduce driving vibrations.

In our opinion, these inclusions, complemented by the vehicle’s numerous advanced safety and assistance features, ensure the

GV80 is now in contention for the best mid-sized luxury SUV in the market today.

GV80 Coupe Launch

For this special launch, one luxury SUV reveal was not enough. We also had the absolute pleasure of witnessing the unveiling of the ultra-stylish, new GV80 Coupe.

Eye-Catching Exterior

We have to say that Genesis have outdone themselves with these two new editions – the coupe adding a new facet to the Genesis brand.

As with the GV80, we became absorbed by the doublelayered G-Matrix Grille and MLA-powered LED headlamps that announced the arrival of this coupe in style.

At the front end, we also admired the expanded air intake, Active Air Flap and four air vents that improve engine cooling while contributing to the vehicle’s bold demeanour.

Shifting to the flanks, we found the arch-shaped parabolic line spanning the body and the low, sloping roofline to achieve a perfect balance, providing an excellent finish to the dynamic and powerful look of the exterior. Further enhancing this bold presence are the coupe-exclusive 22-inch dark grey matte wheels with distinctive spokes.

We also recognised the unique design of the back end, complete with LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps, along with a wide integrated auxiliary brake light on the tailgate. A centrally descending rear spoiler adds a sporty touch, finishing the exterior design with a flourish.

Sporty Interior

Our first impression of the roomy GV80 Coupe’s interior was that it exudes a sporty sensibility.

The two-tone D-cut steering wheel reinforces this feeling while maintaining an essence of elegance. We loved the unique carbon garnish patterns and seats with the coupe-exclusive patterns and stitching, accentuating the refined nature of the design.

We noted the practical metal accents on the brake and accelerator pedals, included to minimise the risk of foot slippage during operation.

Furthermore, thanks to the optimisation of the engine room layout and chassis, along with the incorporation of rear seat reclining functionality, the interior of the GV80 Coupe proved to be very spacious. An optimised trunk package and a foldable luggage shelf ensure plenty of storage room.

As in the GV80, the coupe model houses an array of advanced technical features, including the 27-inch-wide OLED display, the 14.6-inch rear seat smart entertainment system, the wide-angle digital centre mirror and the before mentioned Bang & Olufsen sound system. These and numerous other convenient features ensure an efficient and leisurely driving experience.

Exhilarating Performance

During the second day of our stay in Seoul, we were also privileged to get behind the wheel of the GV80 Coupe. Powered by a 3.5-litre turbo 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C) that delivers 415hp and 56.0kgf·m of torque, we soon realised the coupe model is as impressive on the tarmac as the GV80.

This model’s potent and innovative engine compresses air twice to maximise torque and improve acceleration, ensuring a performance that had us smiling from ear to ear throughout. As with the GV80, Genesis have ensured the smoothest of rides by including Preview ECS and EMCU.

The coupe is also jam-packed with the latest advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and safety features, including 10 airbags and powerful mono-block brake calipers, to ensure the well-being of all occupants.

Our Generous Hosts

Not content with spoiling us for two days, our gracious hosts from Genesis ensured we enjoyed many other fascinating experiences over the following days. Our highlights included a tour of the Hyundai Motor Studio, the breathtaking Seoul Sky Tour and scrumptious meals at several high-end restaurants.

Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow

All too soon, we were packing up with heavy hearts before being driven to Seoul Incheon International Airport. Despite our sadness at departing from this delightful city, we left feeling grateful for having such a magnificent experience.

We want to thank Genesis and the city of Seoul for making us feel so welcome and for sharing the launch of two exceptional vehicles. We know they will prove hugely successful in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment. ✤

EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMER

The MG 7 offers refinement and performance similar to leading brands at a stunningly attractive price.

• ISLAND RIDES
ISLAND RIDES •

MG Motor is a British-born automotive brand that is owned by the Shanghai-based carmaker SAIC Motor. Over the years, the company has steadily grown to become globally renowned for its premium automotive offerings and is once again making waves with the introduction of the first-ever large saloon, the 2024 MG 7, a model in the luxury category that boasts cuttingedge technology, performance and premium sophistication. This month, courtesy of the wonderful team at Zayani Motors, FACT magazine got the chance to get behind the wheel and thoroughly test the exciting new 2024 MG 7 in the 405 VTGI Trophy variant with a 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Dynamic Exterior

As the MG 7 came into view, the first thing we noticed was how well its appearance combines elements of power and elegance. The model boasts an eye-catching sleek fastback design that tastefully includes touches of British flair. In the front, the car has a wide stance with a sharply sculpted bonnet that gives off a confident and commanding presence. This is further accentuated by the large muscular looking front grille that’s framed by the aggressive but stylish looking Digital Hunting LED headlights, daytime running lights and front fog lamps. The well-defined flanks feature body-coloured power folding side mirrors that have integrated turn signals, supercar-style frameless doors that add a spiffy touch, trendy looking 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and a distinctive ‘Trophy’ badge on the left side that signifies the car’s premium performance capabilities. The model’s bodylines flow beautifully from the bonnet, across the precise flanks and to the streamlined fastback styling of the rear roof, which ultimately gives the MG 7 its appealing form. At the rear, the sporty aesthetic continues with a three-section active sport wing that not only adds a spectacular look to the vehicle but also helps in optimising downforce or reducing drag in different driving circumstances. The stylish LED taillights draw the width of the car and illuminate in a pleasing manner and framing the bottom edge is the sizeable chrome-tipped quadexhaust system. Finally, we noticed that the strikingly designed MG emblem, positioned aptly front and centre on the lip of the bonnet, is once again displayed prominently at the rear and just below that is the MG 7 badge exhibited boldly in a minimal but refined style.

Refined Interior

Switching our focus to the interior, once inside our attention was drawn to the Storm Eye integrated motorsport seats that have been meticulously designed for ergonomic support and ultimate comfort. The top trim model also features seats crafted with luxury silk Nappa leather, microfibre suede and European textured piping for added sophistication. To further improve convenience and personalised comfort, the driver’s seat includes six-way electric adjustment for easy manoeuvring. The multi-functional steering wheel feels sturdy in the hand and comes sensibly thought out with the crucial controls positioned conveniently. The centre console is well-designed with the ergonomicallyshaped gear selector conveniently placed slightly closer to the

driver. Space wise, there is sufficient leg, shoulder and head room for the front and rear row seats. There are reasonably sized bins and large cup holders, along with a spacious cubby hole. Also, we really liked how the panoramic sunroof let in plenty of natural light and added to the already spacious feel inside the vehicle. Finally, a sufficiently spacious luggage compartment adds to the practical nature of the MG 7.

Advanced Infotainment & Technology

The MG 7 features a singular large panel that’s split into two screens comprising a 10.25-inch instrument panel and a 12.3-inch main infotainment screen. We found the system to be intuitive and easy to navigate, thanks to its simple and responsive user interface. Also, just below the screen, are capacitive touch buttons for the climate control. There are rear AC vents conveniently placed for the passengers at the back, which are undeniably crucial during the hotter months, and the same panel also has two USB type C ports which are useful for those in the rear seats. The system provides full Bluetooth connectivity and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also a wireless phone charging port that was handy. Another notable feature was the in-car audio experience which was second to none owing to the premium Bose sound system that featured nine dynamic speakers.

Imposing Power & Performance

Then came our favourite part of the day as we finally took the MG 7 out on the road. Our ride was powered by a 2.0-litre turbo variant petrol engine that comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission which provided seamless smooth power delivery and responded effectively well even in the handling and braking department. The MG 7’s engine can capably generate maximum 261hp and a torque of 405Nm, which caught us by surprise and made a favourable impression. This saloon can also accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.5 seconds. When we switched to Sport mode there was a noticeable growl from the

engine that was immediately reflected in the bump in driving performance, which had us impressed. Additionally, there’s the conveniently located Super Sport Button on the steering wheel which we appreciated for quick switching purposes. Finally, the MG 7 also offers a wide range of active safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems like front collision warning, emergency lane keep system and adaptive cruise control to ensure occupants’ peace of mind.

Our Verdict

Taking everything into consideration within this price range, the MG 7 makes a great impression and sets a high standard from the luxurious details to the powerful and immersive driving experience. ✤

MODERN SOUNDS

Bose launches new premium earbuds boasting an innovative cuff-shaped design.

In an attempt to reimagine the future of wearable audio devices, Bose have introduced the new Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. Featuring an inventive cuff-shaped design, users can now clip the earbuds onto the side of their ears, instead of the conventional method where buds are technically placed at the edge of the ear canal or also inserted into the ear (in-ear headphones).

As a result, the new design is far more comfortable for use over long periods and simultaneously provides high-level audio performance with Bose’s proprietary OpenAudio technology.

The Ultra Open Earbuds have a special flex arm coated in supersoft silicone that connects the speaker to the battery barrel. This component rests gently on users’ skin for hours without causing any trouble and has a light-as-air grip to keep the earbuds secure on the ear. They’re perfect for use during activities such as walking your pet, working-out, completing work at a cafe and so much more. They also include the Bose Immersive Audio function that virtually places users right in the acoustic sweet spot and creates an impression that the music they are hearing is being played in the room around them instead of through the earbuds.

With a stunning design that has the appearance of a fashion accessory rather than a traditional audio wearable, the Ultra Open Earbuds feature polished, soft edges and a brushed metallic finish in colour options of black and White Smoke. ✤

The Cluster General Manager (GM) of Gulf Hotels Group shares insights into his complex role, what fulfils him in his career and his aspirations to fly high!

fact magazine 60
• 5 OVER 5

Firstly, congratulations on your new position. As Cluster GM, what unique challenges do you face in overseeing multiple properties and how do you ensure consistency and excellence across them all?

Thank you, FACT magazine! Overseeing multiple properties as a Cluster General Manager comes with its unique set of challenges. Each property has its own distinct characteristics, team dynamics and customer base, which requires a tailored approach to management.

The primary challenge lies in ensuring consistency and excellence across all locations. To achieve this, I focus on three key areas: standardised processes, continuous training and strong communication. By implementing uniform operational standards and fostering a culture of excellence, we ensure that every guest experiences the same high level of service, regardless of the property they visit. Additionally, regular training programmes help our staff stay updated with the latest hospitality trends and best practices. Strong communication channels between properties allow for the sharing of successful strategies and innovations, creating a cohesive and high-performing group.

Over the years, what aspects of your career have brought you the most fulfilment or satisfaction?

The most fulfilling aspect of my career has been the opportunity to lead and develop diverse teams. Witnessing the growth and success of team members and knowing that I’ve played a part in their professional journey, brings me immense satisfaction. Additionally, being able to create memorable experiences for our guests and seeing their positive feedback motivates me every day.

The hospitality industry is all about making people feel valued and comfortable, and knowing that our efforts contribute to

their happiness is incredibly rewarding.

You’ve spent a few years working in the GCC, Levant and Russia. What did you enjoy the most about living and working in these different areas?

Each region has offered unique experiences and learning opportunities. In the GCC, I appreciated the dynamic and fast-paced business environment, coupled with the rich cultural heritage. The Levant region introduced me to its warm hospitality traditions and deep historical roots, which greatly enriched my understanding of the industry. In Russia, I enjoyed the challenge of adapting to a different climate and business culture, as well as the chance to explore its vast and diverse landscapes. Across all these regions, the common thread has been the wonderful people I’ve met and worked with, and the invaluable lessons I’ve learned from them.

What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?

After a long day, I find solace in a good book or spending quality time with my family. I also enjoy taking evening walks, which help me clear my mind and reflect on the day. These activities allow me to relax and recharge, ensuring that I am ready to tackle the challenges of the next day with a fresh perspective.

What's a skill or hobby you've always wanted to learn but haven't had the time to pursue yet?

I've always been fascinated by aviation. Aircraft are something I find incredibly intriguing and technologically advanced. Unfortunately, with the demands of my career, I haven't had the time to fully explore this hobby. I hope to eventually carve out some time to learn the intricacies of aviation and perhaps even take a few flying courses and simulator hours to hone my skills. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Amal AlNoaimi

Ambassador of Responsible Business, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa

Congratulations on being selected as the Ambassador of Responsible Business for the hotel. What does this role entail?

Thank you! I have several responsibilities in my new role. Firstly, to be consistent with developing and implementing responsible business practices throughout the hotel by ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for our guests and employees, actively contributing to the betterment of our communities and promoting sustainable practices within the hotel. The Radisson Hotel Group (RHG) has set a goal for all its hotels to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and that is precisely what we will strive for.

How do you feel about your new responsibilities and what do you hope to achieve?

I am driven by a genuine passion for making a positive impact wherever I go, so I am very motivated and deeply committed to driving meaningful and purposeful change. I believe that practising responsible business will not only contribute to the hotel's longterm success but, most importantly, also create a culture that benefits the hotel and contributes to a better world for future generations. By prioritising sustainability, ethical practices and social responsibility, I aim to foster a positive environment that aligns with these values.

When you're not championing responsible business, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

During my free time, I enjoy a variety of activities. The gym is my go-to for staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Abstract art enables me to express myself visually, drawing inspiration from sunsets and seascapes, allowing me to detach from reality and pour my energy into creating art. Working in marketing sparked a profound interest in videography, which I am eager to improve upon. Lastly, spending quality time with loved ones is of utmost importance to me, as these moments bring me happiness and fulfilment. Overall, my free time is a balance of fitness, creativity, relaxation and nurturing relationships with loved ones.

A TASTE OF EXCELLENCE

Chef Brian Becher, Executive Chef at CUT by Wolfgang Puck and re/Asian Cuisine, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, also a self-proclaimed sandwich enthusiast, talks about his culinary inspirations and his latest creation that’s catching fire!

fact magazine 64
VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

You've been with the Four Seasons brand for almost a decade and, apart from your current role, you're also the Regional Executive Chef for Wolfgang Puck. How has your journey been so far and what keeps your excitement going?

It has been an incredible journey, which began as a career opportunity and soon became my home. I have developed the most sincere and supportive personal relationships of my life here in Bahrain, both inside and outside the walls of our hotel. And that leads me to the easy and obvious (to me) answer of what keeps me excited and keeps me going… people! I love the longstanding and rewarding relationships I have developed with our guests here in Bahrain. This place is truly special and has a way of making one feel sincerely welcomed. And I get inspired by the growth and development of the dedicated people on my team. In my current regional role, I am privileged to support our restaurant, Spago, in Riyadh. Some of the chefs cooking there began their careers here at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. I find it incredibly rewarding to see them carrying our work culture and culinary ethos into a new market!

You've collaborated with various chefs from around the world. Which of these have you enjoyed the most and why?

That’s an incredibly tough choice to make. But I can unequivocally say that the most meaningful collaboration, in which I have had the pleasure to participate, is when Chef Aram Mardigian cooked with me here in Bahrain, earlier this year. Chef Aram mentored and developed me in a crucial time in my career and to have him here in my kitchens, cooking side-by-side with me again was nothing short of emotional and surreal. And for him, to see the

techniques and operational practices he taught me being utilised on the opposite side of the world, was quite meaningful.

You’ve probably cooked hundreds of dishes in your career. How do you draw inspiration for your new creations?

I find travelling to be my biggest source of inspiration. Recently, Chef Kiyoshi and I embarked on a self-guided street food tour of Bangkok. We enjoyed some of the most flavourful dumplings, seafood dishes and noodles on the streets of the city. There is a popular Thai raw prawn dish called Kung Chae Nam Pla which we used as a basis to develop our prawn ceviche in re/Asian Cuisine. And recently, I travelled to Amman, Jordan a few times. The mezze I had was absolutely packed with flavour and it inspired the Charcoal Roasted Eggplant dish we serve at CUT.

In the past you've joked that your Korean Fried Chicken on the CUT lounge menu has been so popular that you might lose your visa if you didn't keep it around. Is this still your signature dish or has a new creation taken its place?

It’s interesting that you ask that question. One of my sous chefs, Mikey Limon, and I developed a Bistek Cheesesteak a few months back that is really catching fire in the market. It is a play on traditional Filipino Bistek Tagalog, reimagined as a Philadelphia style sandwich. Chef Mikey and I joke that it’s a ‘Filidelphia’ sandwich. We marinate the meat in Kalamansi citrus and soy, then cook it with garlic and peppers. The beef gets topped with white cheddar cheese and served on our version of a Pandesal roll. It’s a complex and delicious bite with amazing texture. But worry not; the Korean Fried Chicken isn’t going anywhere. ✤

REGAL DELIGHTS

Reopened in grandeur, Rivaaj invites diners to indulge in the opulence of Awadhi and Rajasthani cuisine. Join Bushra Hakim as she savours a feast fit for royalty.

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Indian cuisine has always held a special place in my heart, thanks to its diverse array of flavours that never fail to captivate the palate. In a country as culturally rich as India, culinary diversity reigns supreme, promising endless discoveries for adventurous food enthusiasts.

Eager to embark on a gastronomic adventure, my colleague and I recently found ourselves at Rivaaj, located on the ground floor of the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Rivaaj has long been cherished by Bahrain's food enthusiasts for Mughlai delicacies. However, since its recent reopening, it has shifted its focus more onto the regal traditions of Awadhi and Rajasthani cuisine under the guidance of Chef Ranjit Mishra. As avid lovers of Indian food, the anticipation surrounding the relaunch was palpable, and we were eager to experience what the newly revamped establishment had to offer.

On entering, we were warmly greeted by Aayush Aggarwal, the Assistant Director of Food & Beverage, who graciously guided us through our dining experience. The ambience was enhanced by enchanting live music performed by traditional Indian musicians, filling the air with soulful melodies of Hindustani tunes played on tabla and santoor – the first of its kind in Bahrain. It felt like we’d been teleported to India, which is exactly what the management intended – to bring a piece of the sub-continent right here to Bahrain. The restaurant exudes traditional charm with warm lighting, intricate woodwork and opulent furnishings. Every detail has been meticulously crafted to create an atmosphere that is both inviting and luxurious.

We were seated by the welcoming staff who offered us refreshing towels – just what we needed on this particularly hot afternoon. Our hostess then personally laid napkins on our laps and presented us with a beautiful gold box of chutneys and pickles, accompanied by crispy papadums to whet our appetites. The garlic pickle was our absolute favourite, along with the mint, tamarind and pineapple chutneys. Refreshing drinks that perfectly blended Eastern and Western flavours arrived and I absolutely loved my mango mocktail with a little surprise of popping bubbles. Our journey began with the cold appetisers, a selection inspired by Indian street food. We started with Pani Puri – bite-sized fried semolina shells filled with spicy potato, pomegranate, tangy tamarind water and mildly spiced mint water – offering an explosion of flavours in each bite. Next, we tried the Raj Kachori, a crispy, hollow puri stuffed with diced potatoes, chickpeas, sev (crispy gram flour noodles), yoghurt, tamarind and mint chutneys, delivering a symphony of textures and tastes. Finally, the Dahi Bhalla, soft lentil dumplings soaked in creamy yoghurt, topped with similar chutneys, provided a refreshing and indulgent snack. The hot appetisers stole the spotlight, their enticing aromas ignited our senses with anticipation. A sizzling skewer of Doodhiya Murgh Ka Boota arrived first, tender chicken marinated in a creamy blend of yogurt, grilled to perfection, melting in our mouths with each bite. Following suit was the Ajmeri Dhungaar Seekh, a succulent lamb kabab, delicately smoked with cardamom and infused with spices, delivering tender texture and impeccable flavour. Adding to the spectacle were the Jhinga Dum Nisha, jumbo prawns marinated in yogurt and dill, then charcoal cooked to perfection, extending a delightful burst of seafood excellence. The Chaap

Ke Sule, lamb chops marinated in Mathania chilli, and charcoalcooked to juicy succulence, provided a fiery and flavourful indulgence that left our taste buds tingling with satisfaction. Finally, the Mathania Paneer showcased a bold vegetarian option, with cottage cheese infused with the rich taste of Mathania chilli, offering a delectable alternative to meat-centric dishes. Unlike many other cuisines, Indian cooking places a strong emphasis on communal dining, where the main course is meant to be shared among family and friends rather than eaten individually. Staying true to this tradition, our main course arrived, presenting a delightful medley of gravies, rice and breads ready to be shared. Our plates were adorned with Ajmeri Nihari, a lamb shank slowcooked for hours with an exotic blend of spices, rendering it so tender it effortlessly fell off the bone. Alongside it was the Chilgoza Aur Palak Kofta, a vegetarian delight crafted from melon seeds, cottage cheese and spinach and my personal favourite, Junglee Maas, a Rajasthani speciality of lamb slow-cooked in an aromatic fusion of local flavourings. These dishes paired pleasantly with the assorted breads.

Among the array of dishes, a standout experience was the Dal Baati Churma, a trio that harmoniously combined Dal (yellow lentils), Baati (whole wheat dumplings soaked in ghee) and the sweet counterpart Churma (sweet crumbled wheat). This trio offered an intriguing interplay of savoury and sweet flavours on our palates. Easy to confuse with dessert, this is actually a traditional three-part main course meant to be enjoyed together. Lastly, we indulged in the aromatic Chicken Biryani, a culinary masterpiece layered with fragrant basmati rice and tenderised chicken, perfectly paired with

raita, concluding our main course feast.

As our journey drew to a close, dessert awaited with a sweet temptation. A trio of Gulab Jamun, Kala Jamun and Rasgulla, different types of syrupy dough balls, floated delicately in a pool of Rabdi (thickened sweetened milk). Each bite a delightful balance of sweetness and velvety creaminess. With each spoonful, we savoured the perfect conclusion to our feast at Rivaaj, leaving us with lingering memories of indulgence and satisfaction, and a desire to return for more.✤

• DINING DELIGHT
MAMMA MIA!
For an evening of culinary exploration, Apple Sharma headed to Together & Co. restaurant at Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay to experience its Italian Night.
DINING DELIGHT •

Italian food is renowned worldwide for its simplicity, deliciousness and health benefits. This popular cuisine is also one my favourites, especially when I’m craving something comforting. So, the re-introduced Italian Night, which takes place every Thursday at Together & Co., was just what the doctor ordered at the end of a long work week.

Located at The Avenues – Bahrain, the Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay offers breathtaking views of Bahrain Bay, making it an ideal backdrop for a pleasant evening out. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Mostafa Zakaria, the Head of Sales, who took us to the bistro-style eatery. He introduced us to the charming Head Chef Enrico Morselli, whose passion for Italian cuisine was evident in the spread he had prepared. The attentive Susan and courteous Amar ensured we were well taken care of throughout the evening, providing impeccable service with a smile. The restaurant’s décor complemented the Italian theme beautifully. One half of the venue was specially transformed for the night, featuring tables adorned with red and white checkered tablecloths, vases filled with spaghetti and decorative glasses overflowing with citrus fruits and grapes. The setting was both elegant and fun – a cardboard photo frame in the colours of the Italian flag added a playful touch, inviting guests to capture sweet memories. Adding to the lively atmosphere was Alphonso, an accordionist, who also played the synthesiser and sang a melodious mix of Italian and English songs. His music, ranging from upbeat tunes to the mellow theme of The Godfather, created a joyful and welcoming environment that set the tone for the evening. The venue's large floor-to-ceiling windows provided stunning

views of the water and city skyline. The beige colour scheme, accented by blue and green hues, presented a cohesive wooden theme, from large columns to slatted ceiling and seating. The restaurant’s warmly lit interior featured downlighters and modern round glass pendant lights embellished with ropes. This cosy décor created an inviting atmosphere perfect for a relaxing evening.

We were ready for The Italian Night, as Chef Enrico talked us through the buffet concept that showcased some of the most beloved Italian dishes, with some exciting variations introduced by the chef.

We began with a hearty white bean soup served with crunchy croutons – ideal for whetting our appetite.

The Bruschetta Corner was a standout and one we haven’t seen elsewhere. It offered a variety of toppings, such as olive paste, caponata (eggplant relish), baked cherry tomatoes, basil and Sicilian tomato pesto and garlic confit. The toasting station and assorted bread allowed us to create our own bruschetta, making for a fun and interactive start to the meal.

The Salad Bar had a wide selection on display, from classic Chicken Caesar and Pantesca (potato and tomato medley) to pasta and seafood salads. The Caprese, with its fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and balsamic vinegar, was a hit, along with the roasted aubergine medallions, which packed a flavourful garlic punch.

The Pizza Corner’s Pepperoni and Margherita options – both outstanding and surprisingly light – featured thin crispy crusts with gooey cheese and just the right amount of tomato base. My favourite, the Margherita, with its simple yet exquisite combination

fact magazine 72

of fresh basil, mozzarella and tomato, was so delicious that it alone could have sufficed as a meal.

The live pasta station with its open kitchen view was popular amongst the guests, allowing diners to choose from a variety of pastas, sauces and condiments. I opted for a white sauce with rigatoni and a mix of vegetables. It was cooked al dente, coated in luscious silky sauce and seasoned with a hint of chilli – just the way I like it. Chef Enrico also prepared a simple yet delectable spaghetti with a medley of vegetables in a tomato sauce, showcasing the beauty of fresh ingredients and expert preparation. There’s something special about an Italian dish prepared live by an Italian chef – mamma mia!

At the Hot Corner, an enticing array of dishes awaited us, from Mushroom Arancini (crispy golden Italian rice balls) and Pollo Alla Cacciatora (a flavoursome traditional dish with pan-fried chicken in a tomato base) to Meat Balls and Seafood Stew. The fragrant Pesce in Crosta Aromatica (bread-crusted fish) was particularly memorable – soft, flaky and bursting with flavours of aromatic herbs. The Beef Lasagna hit the spot with its rustic, familiar taste, while the Broccoli Gratinati, with its creamy béchamel and parmesan topping, was a satisfying cheesy delight. Other noteworthy dishes included the Fried Calamari, crispy, crunchy and ever so moreish and the Eggplant Parmigiana, layered with rich tomato sauce and melted cheese.

Rounding off the feast, we headed for the desserts. Of course, no Italian meal is complete without the classic Tiramisù, which stood out with the perfect balance of creamy mascarpone and espresso-soaked ladyfingers. The banana and white chocolate cake was moist and delicious, while the Salame di Cioccolato, with a biscotti crunch and a decadent rich dark chocolate flavour, was my personal favourite. For a lighter finish, the Macedonia di Frutta (fresh fruit platter) provided a refreshing end to the meal. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening, which was complemented with a couple of glasses of Italian grape for a truly authentic dining experience. Together & Co.’s Italian Night is a delightful journey, celebrating the country’s rich gastronomy. We left completely satisfied, eagerly anticipating our next visit. Buon appetito! ✤

A MEATY EUPHORIA!

Lawson Misquitta indulged in a phenomenal fare at the Royal Golf Club’s impressive Steak Night.

• ON THE MENU
ON THE MENU •

Nestled in Riffa Views is the Kingdom’s premium destination for golf and hospitality – the Royal Golf Club. It would be amiss not to note that this wonderful property very recently achieved a significant milestone by hosting the prestigious DP World Tour (Bahrain Championship) at its spectacular 18-hole championship course. Though I’d love to try my hand at the sport, even if just for the excuse to walk around the meticulously manicured greens, my visit on this particular evening leaned more towards an experience a bit less active but nevertheless still quite exciting on the gastronomic front.

Located on the mezzanine floor of the Club House is Links, one of Royal Golf Club’s main dining destinations that hosts a fantastic Steak Night every Wednesday.

As my dining companions and I stepped into the restaurant, we were soon welcomed by the warm and friendly greetings from the staff members who helped guide us to our seats. Washed in a soothing golden light, the décor here is sleek and stylish with a touch of elegance that creates a very pleasant and charming ambience. On one side is the wonderful cocktail bar as well as the kitchen and the other is an expanse of glass from floor to ceiling that provides guests with arguably one of the best views from any restaurant on the island, courtesy of the stunningly beautiful golf course on display.

While we perused the menu and made our choices from the specially curated Steak Night menu, our kind server brought us a complimentary bread platter along with accompanying spreads. Among them, the warm and soft mini-cheese-buns were surprisingly enjoyable.

From the appetiser section, we first opted for the Beetroot, Feta and Rocket Salad to swiftly kick things off. Bite-sized oven roasted beetroot chunks and sunflower seeds lay delicately spread over a bed of fresh rocket leaves and frisée lettuce, all tossed in a vibrantly zesty orange Dijon cider vinegar dressing. I must note that roasting the beetroot truly does give it the best texture and effectively brings out its natural sweetness which is elegantly juxtaposed against the sharp and intense feta.

Next came the Prawn Cocktail, here each prawn was perfectly blanched and doused in a creamy Marie Rose sauce. That was soon followed by the Crispy Calamari which was a big hit at our table. Slices of baby squid, often attributed with a more tender and better taste compared to their larger counterparts, are covered in tempura batter and deep fried to golden-brown perfection. Every deliciously crunchy bite was further enhanced when combined with the accompanying delectable, sweetchilli and soy sauce dips.

As we finished our appetisers, the waitress served us a round of mocktails prepared by the talented bar staff. From a refreshing Watermelon Cooler to the citrusy Lemon Mint and the aromatic Pineapple Ginger concoction, every sip was satisfyingly refreshing.

Then it came time for the mains! We were truly impressed with the high-quality cuts available on the menu as the wellinformed servers helped us make the perfect choice from the superb selection. First to arrive at our table was the Certified

Angus Beef Espetada Sirloin. Espetada is the Portuguese term for food that’s cooked on skewers and originally hails from the island of Madeira, Portugal. Tender uniform cubes of juicy beef are rubbed with a mild mix of herbs and spices, skewered with bell peppers and onions and chargrilled to perfection. Served spectacularly on a skewer hung vertically from a hook, the presentation itself made a notable impression and was improved upon once we got to devouring it. Beefy, succulent and full of flavour, it was served along with a side of roast potatoes, greens and grilled mushrooms. Every bite was impressively delicious.

Next up was a terrific Scottish Salmon Steak, seasoned with spices and garlic and grilled to an impeccable delicate texture. Every buttery, flaky bite rejoiced on our palates and required no additional accoutrements or adornments.

Finally, an exquisitely large wooden platter carrying a hearty chunk of Certified Angus Beef rib-eye, an accompaniment of sauces and a sizzling hot stone, announced the arrival of our final main course. The hot stone served a dual purpose of creating a rousing spectacle at the table and, more importantly, letting us perfectly sear the meat to the ideal temperature as per our preference, while sealing in all those delicious juices. We very much enjoyed cutting sections of our generously marbled steak with plenty of flavourful fat and giving it a quick sizzling sear before pleasurably relishing every mouth-watering forkful. Immensely satisfying!

Bringing our delightful dining experience to its conclusion with dessert was the Choco Lovers Cake – a decadent serving of chocolate cake served with salted caramel, hazelnuts and a luscious accompaniment of mango sorbet that perfectly cut through the richness. We also tried the Royal Gulf Pleasure, which was a lip-smacking serving of vanilla cheesecake that genuinely hit the spot!

Discover the perfect blend of modern luxury and creative flair at The Merchant House, where Apple Sharma experienced a dream escape in the heart of the city.

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT •

In bustling downtown Manama, where the old Bab

Al Bahrain souq tells tales of the past, stands The Merchant House, the Kingdom’s first five-star luxury boutique hotel.

As an avid traveller, I’ve spent a lot of time in hotels and I can trade home comforts for a luxury stay in a heartbeat. So, I was excited at the prospect of enjoying this quaint little gem and experiencing first-hand all that the hotel had to offer.

The Welcome

Upon arrival, my partner and I were warmly welcomed by the friendly reception staff, who ensured our check in was swift and seamless.

The moment we stepped into the lobby, we were immediately struck by the vibrant and eclectic design of the space. I adore boutique hotels, especially when they have a story to tell, and this area alone had a lot to say.

The Art

The Merchant House brings the lively spirit of Manama to life with its mix of concrete columns, bold colours and diverse fabric patterns. The centrepiece of the lobby is a striking graffiti pillar created by local artist Mustafa Al Halwachi, which sets the tone for the hotel's impressive art collection. As an art lover, I found myself in paradise here. Throughout the property, the walls and corridors are adorned with more than 300 carefully curated artworks by local and international artists – it’s like walking through a contemporary art museum. Striking works from the likes of British artist Sacha Jafri and Bahrainis Jamal Abdul Rahim and Aysha Almoayyed, are featured alongside iconic pieces by French painter Toulouse-Lautrec and even an original from the legendary Picasso (yes, you heard it right)!

The Décor

The reception area stands out with its blue and white floralpatterned wall, accented with touches of gold. Nearby, the lobby's alcoves are adorned with elegant blue and white floral sofas, complemented by tasteful table and floor lamps, creating a welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. There’s also a vintage-looking balance scale – a nod to the hotel’s logo – a thoughtful, creative touch. The adjacent Café Gray, with its inviting charm, adds to the lobby’s vibrant character.

The Suites

With only 46 rooms, The Merchant House offers an intimate and exclusive experience with five types of suites: Urban, Urban Plus, Executive, Corner and Signature Suite. Each one feels residential, complete with a kitchenette, dining and sitting areas, a master bedroom and an en suite bathroom. We stayed in the Signature Suite, which is the largest and has the possibility to interconnect with another to create a two-bedroom space. Our spacious living area featured a small round dining

table and a cosy seating area with a large comfortable white sofa. It was tastefully decorated with a mix of floral and solid-coloured cushions, an orange swivel chair and a blue leather stool, all centred around a stylish glass coffee table. Our room also had a complimentary fruit platter – a thoughtful touch – as well as two TVs, a full mini bar and a coffee machine that grinds fresh beans – we love our brew, so this was a very welcome amenity.

The open-plan living room transitioned into the bedroom, separated by a partial wall and an artistic metal screen, for some added privacy. The bedroom featured a super-king bed with large, European lounge pillows, a small writing desk, wardrobes with a safe and two bedside tables with large lamps. The round windows with slatted shutters, reminiscent of a ship’s portholes, added a nautical charm.

The bathroom, the longest of all the hotel’s suites, featured natural lighting, double sinks and a large rain shower with an underwater fish scene glass panel, an apt addition to the space. We loved the feel of the plush bathrobes and the REN Clean Skincare products, which added another level of luxury to our morning routine.

The Library

Once settled, we ventured to The Library on the mezzanine floor for an English Afternoon Tea. This premium lounge, overlooking the lobby, is a treasure trove of more than

1,000 books curated by The Ultimate Library of Oxford. This cosy sanctuary exuded warmth and featured a mix of vintage-style sofas and printed single seaters, which contrasted perfectly with the open bookshelves and cherry blossom painted walls.

We took our seats in a comfy corner and were presented with the afternoon tea menu, inspired by Bahrain’s historical role as a trading hub connecting East and West.

As we flipped through a couple of interesting books, our afternoon tea was beautifully presented on a tiered platter, featuring a delightful selection of sandwiches, scones and sweets, offered with our choice of traditional English Breakfast tea. The highlights for us were the smoked salmon sandwich on rye bread and the carrot galangal and date cake. The Afternoon Tea experience caters to all preferences and includes a fixed set menu with an extensive tea selection, which can be upgraded to include a variety of flowering teas or sparkling grape.

The Facilities

The mezzanine level also houses The Merchant Room, a meeting space ideal for private or VIP board meetings with a 10-seater table setting and a small business centre with computer and printer facilities.

As we wandered around the hotel, we looked in on the other amenities, which included the tranquil PURESPA,

as well as a fully equipped gym with the latest Technogym fitness equipment and a serene emerald rooftop pool.

The Dinner

For dinner, we ascended to the rooftop, home to the hotel’s restaurant – Indigo Terrace – our absolute favourite part of the property. This chic eatery offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The terrace, with its British-garden inspired design, provides a stylish downtown entertainment spot, featuring an elegant setting with a beautifully designed bar and more contemporary art adorning the walls.

The menu fuses Mediterranean and Asian flavours, creating a unique culinary experience. We began our meal with a selection of starters, including Roasted Sweet & Sour Eggplant, Seabass Spiced Tacos and Beetroot and Buffalo Mozzarella – all delicious and bursting with flavour. For the mains, we tried the delicious Saffron Risotto, a sure winner, and slow-cooked Corn-fed Chicken with Roasted Cauliflower and cauliflower mousse, a hearty and satisfying dish.

We finished our meal with the decadent Chocolate Fondant served with homemade vanilla ice cream. The beautifully presented dishes, accompanied with exceptional ‘service with a smile’ made for an exquisite dining experience and one that we will most definitely be revisiting.

The Breakfast

The next morning, after a restful night’s sleep in our comfy bed, we returned to Indigo for breakfast. The à la carte menu offered a variety of enticing options and we began with a lovely fruit platter, followed by freshly baked croissants from the pastry basket. From the Healthy section of the menu, we couldn’t resist the Super Spinach Pancake, which came with fried eggs, avocado, spinach, cherry tomato and halloumi. From the Classic Eggs section, we tried the Kashmiri Hash with Miso Hollandaise and the Egg Royale with smoked salmon. Accompanied with a big glass of orange juice and coffee, our breakfast set us up for a perfect start to the day.

The Goodbye

We completed our stay with a visit to Café Gray. Located in the quiet lobby with a clear view of the bustling street, this café is ideal for a casual bite or a quick business meeting. Offering light sandwiches, homemade cakes, fresh coffee and juices, it also serves enticing chocolate delights from its ChocoLAB menu, including chocolate fondues and hot chocolate, all made with speciality AURO chocolate. We indulged in the delicious signature dessert, Coffee Milk Chocolate Tiramisu, ending our experience on a sweet note.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this exquisite property. Boutique hotels hold a special charm and The Merchant House lived up to its reputation as a luxurious, intimate space with contemporary design and impeccable service to match. So, whether you’re looking for a tranquil escape or a luxurious spot to explore Bahrain, The Merchant House is the perfect choice. ✤

BIG SCREEN Fallout Ripley

Need to Know:

Fallout is an American futuristic drama series based on the highly successful role-playing video game franchise created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. Set in a postapocalyptic Los Angeles after a horrendous nuclear event, some citizens now live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants, bandits and whatever else now roams the surface above.

Creators: Graham Wagner, Geneva Robertson-Dworet Cast: Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Xelia Mendes-Jones

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The creators of the highly appreciated TV show Westworld are working together once again to present the ingenious story of the sprawling video game franchise – Fallout. The series opens in 1950s’ America, at the height of the cold war and other events. But before you know it, the story fast-forwards and places viewers in the aftermath of an apocalyptic nuclear war far into the future. In this present-day, many survivors take refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults, which are retro-futuristic societies that came about as a result of major resource wars.

In Vault 33, a young woman named Lucy (Ella Purnell) is set to marry a resident of Vault 32. But her big day is completely ruined when the wedding party is brutally raided by surface dwellers led by a woman called Moldaver. Things get worse, when she finds her father Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan) has been kidnapped by the invaders. Desperate for answers, Lucy (who has spent her whole life in the safety of the Vaults) decides to venture out into the dangerously unforgiving wasteland of Los Angeles and find her father with only the name Moldaver as a clue.

ON THE RECORD

ROCK

All Born Screaming

St. Vincent

Annie Clark – better known as the shapeshifting triple-Grammy winning artrock experimentalist St. Vincent – finds herself stepping away from alter egos and getting personal as she digs deeper searching for her own sonic vocabulary on the self-produced seventh studio album, All Born Screaming Consistently defying expectations and never known to run the same play twice, St. Vincent’s vocals and guitar playing (she is regularly listed among the top guitarists of the 21st century by multiple publications) are at their most expressive and distorted best throughout on what’s her heaviest sounding record yet.

On opener Hell Is Near and follow up Reckless, both sound raw and essential with sections that smoothly show off ethereally sparse and then decadently lavish production.

Her vocals are bold, self-assured but with a restless urgency on the sleazy and groove-heavy Broken Man and Flea, that sound effectually weighty thanks to Dave Grohl pummelling the drums on both tracks.

It’s hard not to imagine Violent Times scoring the background of an upcoming Bond movie with its orchestral grandness. While the dazed apocalyptic ballad The Power’s Out (a personal favourite) sounds like a spiritual successor to Bowie’s stunningly incandescent Five Years

ROCK

Can We Please Have Fun

Kings Of Leon

Kings of Leon are back and most definitely having fun again! Its discernibly heard all over their ninth studio album fittingly titled Can We Please Have Fun

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, the Followill brothers (cousin Matt included) have been on the rock scene for over two decades. Helping breathe new life on their latest showing is pop-leaning producer Kid Harpoon, a frequent collaborator with Harry Styles, Florence & The Machine and others.

Wind chimes ring softly in the distance on opener Ballerina Radio ; it's accompanied with synths and a propulsive bassline laid down by nifty bassist Jared. This smoothly transitions into next track – Rainbow Ball, where frontman Caleb sounds his ‘honey over gravel’ best while singing “only good vibrations at the rainbow ball, sweet vibration!” on the chorus.

On the groovy bop Nowhere to Run the entire band sound great over a bouncy funk bassline. They then switch gears into their classic garagerock finest for Mustang

The mellow country-tinged Ease Me

On oozes a tranquil and joyous feeling. While the outstanding closer Seen evokes feelings reminiscent to the end credits rolling post a really good movie.

ORAL HISTORY

When The Sea Came Alive

With the 80th anniversary of D-Day coming up, it seems a particularly poignant moment to highlight the latest release from the New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist which offers the most complete account of D-Day – the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The surprise landing of over 150,000 Allied troops on Normandy’s beaches on the morning of June 6, 1944, turned the tide of history in WWII and this book explores the full impact of this world-changing event. When the Sea Came Alive captures a human drama like no other and pays a fitting tribute to the men and women of the ‘Greatest Generation’.

MYSTERY THRILLER

Middle Of The Night

Another New York Times bestselling author, but this time it’s a thriller. The action, aptly, takes place in Hemlock Circle – now there’s a name to conjure spooky goings on – the former home of main character, Ethan Marsh, whose childhood best friend, Billy, disappeared during a back garden sleepover 30 years ago. On his reluctant return decades later, insomniac Ethan begins to notice strange things happening in the night and signs of Billy’s presence. His investigations lead to reunions with former friends, the discovery of a clandestine research institute in neighbouring woods and the realisation that nowhere is really safe.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Playing Chicken

As we go to press, a battle is raging in India’s courts over who invented the muchloved dish Butter Chicken. The dish’s history is not in doubt, it came to India from Pakistan via Partition. According to the BBC: “A man named Mokha Singh ran a restaurant in the city of Peshawar (now in Pakistan). After partition, Singh moved to Delhi, founding a restaurant with three employees he'd worked with in Peshawar: Kundan Lal Gujral, Kundan Lal Gujral's cousin Kundan Lal Jaggi and Thakur Das Mago. It was here, that they started serving a dish first thrown together

at their restaurant in Peshawar – one created by adding a tomato-based gravy, dollops of butter and spices common in Pakistan to leftover tandoori chicken.” So far, so good. But fast forward to the present day and the descendants of Gurjal and Jaggi, each of whom are restaurateurs and each claim their forefather was the original inventor. The disagreement has become so bitter that the rivals have taken it to court. Seems a bit mad to us but then, have you ever asked a Middle Easterner where hummus comes from?

Putting The Fun In F1

Monégasque Charles Leclerc had a very good Monaco Grand Prix chalking up his first ever win on home turf and garnering plenty of praise for keeping Max Verstappen well away from the podium – a result that delighted lots of F1 fans who had become weary of the Belgian-Dutchman’s somewhat boring track domination. However, Leclerc wasn’t just in winning form on the track, he and others were showing an admirable sense of humour. In the days leading up to the big race, Australian McLaren driver Oscar Piastri

mentioned that he too would like to be a citizen of the small French principality, prompting Leclerc to offer adoption which led to multiple jokes about their one-two podium placing ‘keeping it in the family’ – not to mention Oscar’s mum, Nicole, offering to adopt RB driver Yuki Tsunoda since she seemingly has a son vacancy.

If that wasn’t enough, the Ferrari team, including Principal Fred Vasseur, having managed a double podium with Carlos Sainz coming in third, decided to celebrate by diving into Monte Carlo Harbour. Now, that’s what we call fun!

Where’s Wally?

Now, we’ve heard it all. So, we all know emotional support animals are a thing, right? But we bet you’re thinking something cuddly like a dog, cat or rabbit – though we have heard of an emotional support cow and a chicken (though they’re generally not actually real animals).

But, Joie Henney, of Pennsylvania, USA, is the proud owner of an emotional support alligator – Wally, who even has a TikTok account with 143,000 followers – or at least he was. Mr Henney was visiting his holiday home in Georgia

when Wally went missing from his pen outside the property.

It seems pranksters grabbed Wally and authorities, unaware of his registered emotional support animal status, called a trapper who captured the tame reptile and released him into a remote swamp near others of his kind.

Now Joie is desperate to learn the location in the hope of being reunited with the animal who he says has helped alleviate his depression for the last 10 years.

All he wants to know is where’s Wally?
