FROM THE EDITOR

A Month for the Arts YOU might have noticed the rather funky cover on the magazine this month (well, I’d hope so anyway, considering you’re reading it right now!), featuring the artistic skills of the talented young artist Perryhan ElAshmawi. You can find out more about her, and see more of her work, in our Arts Lead this month, but this is by no means all that’s going on in the artistic world in Bahrain this June. There’s also the World Poetry Festival, being held by the Second Circle, an offshoot of the Bahrain Writer’s Circle dedicated solely to poetry, being held in line with the Manama Capital of Culture campaign’s month of poetry this June. There’s also an exhibition entitled M-theory, by Frances Arlene Stafford. Frances is the Exhibition Specialist for the Ministry of Culture, and former curator of Al Riwaq gallery, so it’s only

fitting that she should be holding an exhibition of her own work this time round! And then we have the biggest event of the summer, the Bahrain Summer Festival, kicking off in June. This year’s event brings us eight fantastic acts performing throughout the month, with something for all ages, so I’m really looking forward to catching some of those. Aside from the arts, it seems this month that many of the venues around Bahrain are staging their last hoorah before a summer/Ramadan hiatus, so this might be your last chance to get some partying in before Bahrain hunkers down for the summer months and things get really quiet. Make the most of June, because I seriously doubt there’ll be quite so much to write about during July and August!

Because you don‘t get a second chance to make a first impression. Some effortlessly catch the eye. Like the new Volkswagen CC. It combines elegance and sportiness – a sedan and a coupé in one. The fact that it drives the way it looks is not that astonishing, thanks to its DSG dual clutch gearbox and three engines with up to 3.6 litre and 300 horsepower. What‘s more surprising is that beneath its dynamic design lurks a fully-fledged sedan: spacious, functional and equipped with numerous assistance systems, including Driver Alert System (standard) and rear view camera (optional). The Bahrain Summer Festival Returns! S

et to begin on June 14 and last until July 16, this year’s Bahrain Summer Festival carries the slogan “Manama, the City of Joy”. The events will all be held at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre (BIECC). Designed to cater for local and regional audiences, the programme this year falls in line with the mission of the Ministry of Culture’s Capital of Arab Culture programme to provide multi-cultural disciplinary learning opportunities and cultural exchanges. Undertaken by the Arab League under the sponsorship of the UNESCO Cultural Capitals Programme, every year a different Arab capital is awarded the chance to engage in a cultural dialogue with local and regional audiences. In 2004, Manama was elected as the Capital of Arab Culture during the meeting of Arab ministers. The Ministry of Culture spent a great deal of time and effort developing an agenda for 2012, which seeks to invite Arabs and residents to discover the cultures, heritages and identities of different parts of the Arab world. The year-long programme is broken up into 12 different cultural themes according to the months of the year. June represents the month of poetry, and a number

of events, such as The Colours of Life Poetry event from the Second Writers’ Circle, are taking place. The idea of the Capital of Arab Culture is to foster an environment of multi-disciplinary learning with an appeal to all sectors of society. After such a huge success last year that was broadcasted on Bahrain TV and covered by Elements Productions, HE Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Minister of Culture, said “Our programme this year is lively and interactive, dedicated to the future of children, families and all guests. We have compiled a varied agenda to ensure that all tastes are catered for including musical events, cultural and educational events and activities from the region and beyond.” This year there are eight performances set to take place, all representing the talents and skills from a host of actors, musicians, children and cultures. Be sure to keep an eye out for the festival’s mascot, Nakhool, who will be returning in full force with a range of activities and workshops designed for children from 2pm to 7pm every day. THE SCOPE

LOVE IT ! Breakthrough for Travel Ban Expats

SO OBVIOUS!

MPs Reject Gulf Air Bailout Bahrain Embraces Solar Energy

In a pioneering pilot project, certain areas of Awali could soon be powered by solar energy thanks to a 5MW solar power station being built to test the viability of the technology. If the project is successful, Bahrain could see a bigger solar power project being planned for the future to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and improve its environment. In a country that enjoys as much sunshine as Bahrain does, this is only a logical move!

It’s absolutely ridiculous that Parliament rejected the government’s financial bailout of Gulf Air, saying that Gulf Air needs to fix its own problems. Sure, Gulf Air isn’t perfect, and has been struggling for years, but just as it was clawing its way back from the brink its problems have been compounded by the global recession, and the local unrest that has affected the whole of Bahrain’s economy. Cutting them off now is a stupid move. Aside from the fact that it is both directly and indirectly responsible for employing thousands of Bahrainis, it’s an important part of Bahrain’s national identity. It must be supported during these difficult times!

CAN’T BELIEVE IT

Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel for the hundreds of expats suffering under the ridiculous travel ban laws in Bahrain. Immigration authorities have agreed to renew the residence permits of expats hit by travel bans, so that they are able to find work and attempt to pay off their debts. This is a step that should have been taken years ago, as the combination of banning expats from travelling and not allowing them to work is an illogical situation that offers no solution to the problem.

HATE IT! Tony’s Question of the Month:

O

Why Do We Want a Unified GCC?

ne of the major discussions at the recent GCC Summit was the prospect of a GCC Union, the foundations of a political and economic zone emulating that of the European Union. One of the states pushing most heavily for that was Bahrain, who suggested an initial union of Bahrain, Saudi and Qatar. While Bahrain will obviously benefit most from becoming more closely tied to two of the most resource-rich countries in the world, the ramifications for all those involved are only positive. In order to create this union Bahrain and Qatar will have to finally resolve their differences over the disputed islands that sit between them, and push the plans for the Friendship

8

Bridge ahead more rapidly, which will ultimately benefit the economies and relations of both countries, which is no bad thing. However, the wider ramifications of a union are much more important. In the face of increasing sabre rattling and aggressive posturing by Iran, a powerful and resource-rich country with nuclear aspirations (whether peaceful or not is irrelevant, as there is a fine line between the two), a unified GCC will create a balance of power that will resist Iran’s attempts to become the dominant force in the region. Again, the tiny state of Bahrain is eager for this, as Iran has made no secret of its ambitions to annex the country. The GCC countries aren’t perfect, not by a long shot, but politically they

are hugely importantly on a global scale for one main reason. They are one of the few examples of where Muslim states and the rest of the world are cooperating well, and where Muslims and people of all creeds and colours are living together happily and peacefully, in mutual respect and tolerance. This is an example that could be followed by societies in many countries around the world, and this must be protected and allowed to prosper. The GCC is a gateway between East and West, and therefore a unified, peaceful, stable and economically powerful GCC benefits the whole world. Unfortunately, the results of the discussions at the summit were inconclusive, but the idea is at least gaining momentum.

Poetry Festival

After the release of My Beautiful Bahrain earlier this year, The Second Circle, part of the wider Bahrain Writers’ Circle, is set to host a great new creative festival…

A

s a part of the Manama Arab Capital of Culture 2012, The Ministry of Culture has invited The Second Circle poetry group to an evening of local and international poetry presentations, which is to be directed by Bahrain’s pre-eminent Western poet David Hollywood. Currently with 44 members, The Second Circle is the largest poetry group in the Kingdom, of which a impressive 25 percent are Bahraini. This Circle is also part of the wider Bahrain Writers’ circle, which hosts a further 126 members making it by far the largest writing group in the country and potentially through the whole of the Gulf region. The night is to be held on June 21 at Qal’at al-Bahrain, otherwise known as Bahrain Fort. June marks the month of poetry for the Manama Arab Capital of Culture and this specific date is also the Summer Equinox. So what can you expect to see? The festival, entitled “The Colours of Life” will deal with the variety of experiences we all engage within a lifetime and there are currently 15 poets from 10 countries programmed to perform. 60 poems covering all spectrums of mood and perception will be read out to the crowd and the aim of the event is to depict how Bahrain still very much remains as a shared community of people. Each of the poems has been written by its performer, many of whom have had no educational background in creative writing. The standard of the poetry is pretty astonishing and 30 percent of the poems will be read in Arabic. The location of the fort was chosen due to the significance of its heritage and history – this and the combination of the lapping tide and warm weather, the evening is going to be one-of-a-kind and hopefully the start of things to come. GO: To get involved with the Bahrain Writers’ Circle go to www.bahrainwriters.circle.com or call David Hollywood on 3920 7624

Bahrain Science Centre Education is the key to success, and what could be better for education than a brand new centre designed to teach the younger generations?

T

he new Bahrain Science Centre (BSC), prior to its official launch where the centre will be open to the general public, opened its doors to school groups who were formally invited to check out the facilities. The aim of the centre is to promote cross-generational learning between every age group, whether it is children to their parents or to their grandparents. The centre also endeavors to promote social engagement across different cultures, where its ethos highlights the necessity of lifelong learning. Located at 697 Riyadh Avenue in Isa Town, the science centre has six interactive exhibition galleries, an auditorium, four laboratories and a café. The role of the BSC is to promote the awareness of science and technology, complement the school curriculum, stimulate curiosity and innovation whilst also creating a forum for public debate on science and technology issues. There are a number of different topics that are to be covered by the BSC, however the current exhibitions include junior engineering, human health, the five senses, earth sciences and biodiversity. The centre is the perfect place for children (and adults in this case) to learn in an entertaining

manner. The hands-on learning approach, with the use of interactive displays and peoplecentred programmes, such as science shows, is a great way to get visitors involved. Said to be ‘an ideal edutainment destination’, the Assistant Undersecretary of Community Development Khalid Ishaq said, “The Bahrain Science Centre provides a platform for young people to enjoy science through interactive exhibits, and exchange ideas. It is an interactive educational facility that targets children, youth and families of Bahrain. We are delighted with the success of the school group visits to date and hope to see it as a thriving venue for innovative learning through workshops and events.” The BSC falls under the Ministry of Human Rights and Social Development and plays a leading role in science education. What is great about this new centre is the fact that it is providing a new, fresh and fun branch onto the existing educational tree. Bahrain has started to take considerable steps to improve the knowledge opportunities for its younger generations – this new centre is certain to be a successful and refreshing addition to the learning resources of Bahrain.

K

nown for her great professional work for the Ministry of Culture, Frances Stafford’s artistic side can now be praised with her new “M-Theory” Exhibition. Opening on June 9 at the World Beat Café, the exhibition is a selection of ink drawings, mixed media and video installation that the artist has been working on since her arrival to Bahrain. The concept of her work is based on the musings of her small understanding of the actual M-Theory, suggested by Edward Witten of the Institute for Advanced Study in 2008, Quantum Physics and her observation of psychological relationships. Born in 1984 in Edmonton, Canada, Frances was raised in a Ukrainian cultural community. Completing a BA Honours Degree in Art History, before moving to Toronto and the Netherlands, where she wrote five screenplays for Elbe Stevens, she moved to Bahrain in 2012 and was the resident curator of Al Riwaq Art Space. Frances is now an Exhibition Specialist for the Ministry of Culture. GO: To see the exhibition, drop by the World Beat Café on June 9.

Happy Snappers Get Happier! 2012 has already seen a number of photography competitions in Bahrain. With our own ‘Natural Bahrain’ finishing up in March, photography fanatics can now get excited about not one, but TWO more competitions that are taking place in June. Here’s a little bit more about them both...

Canon UEFA Euro 2012

F

ootball fans will be on the edge of their seats this month due to the kick off of the UEFA Euro Cup. To celebrate the tournament, Canon Middle East is offering the chance for all budding photographers to get their talents seen. They’ve launched a Middle East and North and East Africa-wide photo and video competition across 45 countries, inviting everyone to share their passion for football. The new initiative is in line with Canon Europe’s sponsorship of the Euro 2012, as well as being part of the 10th anniversary of Canon Middle East, where last month was dedicated to the power of family and friendship. The theme of the competition is entitled “Celebrate your passion for football”, and offers fans the chance to win a travel package for two to a city of their choice including flights and accommodation – what more could you want! Mai Youssef, the Corporate Communications Manager of Canon Middle East, said, “We are pleased to launch this Middle East, North and East Africa-wide competition which will serve as a platform for us to share our passion for the captured image. Without a doubt, football is one of the most loved sports across the Middle East, North and East Africa and through this competition we want to inspire people’s creativity and innovation by using the medium of photography and videography.” The competition will be hosted on the Canon Facebook page, and entries can include videos or pictures. Canon fans can select the best submissions by ‘liking’ their favourite uploads and the first, second and third winners will walk away with pretty exciting travel prizes. GO: To find out more about the competition, please visit www.facebook.com/CanonME.

Urban Photographer of the Year

T

he Urban Photographer of the Year competition has opened its submissions for the fourth year in a row, where for the first time applicants from all over the globe can submit their images. First launched in 2007 by the leading global real estate services firm CBRE, the contest initially focused on Europe and the Middle East and Africa. The competition is now the largest of its kind in the world, and last year saw 10,000 entries from more than 74 countries. This year’s theme is “Cities at Work”, and is designed to challenge amateur and professional photographers alike to capture what they consider to be the essence of urban life at any time of day, whether the content is inspirational, entertaining or poignant. The overall winner of the 2012 competition will get to choose a luxury photo safari from a range of exotic locations sponsored by CBRE. Two runners up will also be given prizes. The rules are that each individual may submit one image for each hour of the

competition, making it a maximum of 24 images. Past winners have drawn inspiration from a vast spectrum of city sights including cycling commuters in Hamburg to an urban desert storm in Saudi Arabic to a city fireworks display in Hungary. Last year’s overall winner was taken by Victor Melo from Portugal, who submitted a picture of a Tunisian stallholder at work in Tunis’ ancient souq. The Chairman of the judging panel, Martin Grahame Dunn, said, “Urban photography is a much neglected part of our social heritage. It is not an accidental by-product of modern life but a deliberate and creative activity. This competition has opened a new and stimulating door in the photography world and its format allows all manner of photographers to bring every hour of the day alive from thousands of different perspectives.” GO: Photographers have until June 30 to submit their entries. The full list of winners will be announced in August. To get your images seen, log on to www. cbrephotographer.com.

Calvin Klein Fragrances

EVERY guy likes to smell good, and every girl loves a man who smells good. Next up for a perfect gift are two fragrances from Calvin Klein. The first one is ckfree blue - fresh, clean and masculine - this is a bright scent which embodies the modern and energetic man. Packed with notes of mandarin, spearmint, ozone and white leather, this is a great day scent for a man out and about in the summer sun. The second fragrance from CK is the limited edition Eternity Summer, which is much more of a romantic and serene scent. More floral than the ckfree blue, this one is ideal for those ‘sundowner’ moments. With hints of orange blossom, Japanese pear martini accord, white musks and tonka bean, let your dad smell his best this summer with this winner.

Kempinski Spa Day

The Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel is offering Dads the chance to sit back and enjoy some well-deserved pampering. With five treatment rooms dedicated just to gentlemen, men can choose from a choice of stimulating and refreshing Classic, Thai and Swedish massages together with a Gentlemen’s Rescue Facial, tailored to the needs of their skin. TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Chronograph

UNVEILED at the recent Monaco Grand Prix, this watch is one to be proud of. TAG Heuer has partnered with the Monaco Grand Prix (probably the most glamorous one of them all) and the Automobile Club de Monaco due to their shared wealth of shared values and history. With motor racing and sports timing indented in TAG Heuer’s blood since it invented “Time of Trip”, any one who doesn’t own a TAG Heuer watch is seriously missing out especially when Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton are the Brand Ambassadors. This limited edition of just 1,200 pieces has silver sub-counters with “gras-de-boise” finishing and a black alligator strap with orange stitching. Your dad’ll love it (if you can get hold of one!)

NOTEWORTHY

JJ’s Euro 2012 Line Up One of THE sporting events of the year is just around the corner and where better to watch it than at Bahrain’s favourite pub?

T

he UEFA European Football Championship 2012 – Five words that have probably got the majority of the male population of Bahrain jumping off their seats and hugging everyone in sight. Either that or the queue going into JJ’s has already started in preparation for what is set to keep football fanatics dizzy with excitement. Having pulled out all the stops for the World Cup two years ago, where the Irish pub’s basic policy was to “Make watching the matches during the World Cup as enjoyable as it could possibly be,” JJ’s showed their huge appreciation for the game with a special launch day – with food and drink deals galore! This year is no different, with special f&b promotions during the games, and a full table service so that you don’t have to go to the bar and miss any of the action. So why JJs? Well, if you haven’t been before, you are about to set foot into a place that epitomizes the word ‘atmosphere’. Bustling with punters most days of the week, and absolutely buzzing on the weekends, JJ’s rings true to the traditional Irish saying “Cead Mile Failte”, meaning “A hundred thousand welcomes”. Bahrain’s largest

16

and only authentic Irish Pub, this place really knows how to keep you laughing, dancing and having fun all night long. This June, don’t miss a single goal or minute of action in the Euro 2012. With live coverage on four large screen TVs and a further 10 TVs located throughout the two floored venue, there is also a viewing lounge dedicated to those looking to move away from the riff raff and watch the games in piece (well some sort anyway!). And thanks to the venue’s impressive zoned sound-system, you can can enjoy live commentary playing in one part of the pub whilst the DJ plays music on the dance floor, and another match plays upstairs. The opening games take place on June 8, with Poland playing Greece at 7pm and Russia vs. Czech Republic at 9.45pm. There will be live commentary, live music and punters living the dream here this month. So get down to Adliya this June to follow your nation’s route to the final and live every moment of this summer festival of football.

Live coverage on four large screen TVs and a further 10 TVs located throughout the venue.

So Where Now? As thousands of highschool graduates in Bahrain are finishing their exams, many of you will be wondering to yourselves, “What happens now?” Perhaps you are already going to university or jumping straight into your dream job. However there are undoubtedly many of you who are still unsure. Education is not a decision to be made hastily. It is not a summer camp for three years, nor is it a place to go if you are looking to delay your embarkation into the big bad world. University is where you go to extend your skills, improve your knowledge and specialise on a particular area of study that could determine the entirety of your career. For many people, the financial strain of continued education is a serious issue so make sure you are certain of your choice and degree. Here is a guide to some of the best educational establishments on the island.

Royal University for Women What? General Education Best For: Fashion Design Tell Me More: Existing as

the first private, purpose-built, international University in the Kingdom dedicated solely to educating women, the RUW stands as an educational environment dedicated to creating leaders, developing vibrant personalities, dynamic decision makers, independent thinkers and community conscious individuals. The main focus of the RUW is on academic excellence and personal development. The initial degree programmes were designed in collaboration with two establishments, Middlesex University in the UK and McGill University in Canada. The curriculum is designed to meet internationally recognised standards, and this year the university proudly sees the graduation of its fourth cohort of students. The main aims of the RUW are to help increase the aspirations of young women in the country. Very much playing a huge part in Bahrain’s future, the Chairman, of the RUW Board of Trustees and Board of Directors, Fahad Al Zamil said, “We believe the RUW is truly a place where women excel.” The Faculty of Art and Design is one of the most popular aspects of the university. There are three Bachelor degree programmes including Fashion Design, Graphic Design and Interior Design, all existing as a three-year courses, once a year-long Foundation Diploma in Art & Design has been fulfilled. A Q&A With RUW

FACT talks to Dr. Mazin M.A. Juma, President of the Royal University for Women to find out more...

How many students graduated this year? 131 students.

What did most students graduate in? The graduates include 80 from the faculty of Business and Financial Sciences, 31 from the Faculty of Arts and Design, eight from the Faculty of Information Technology, in addition to 12 graduates from the Faculty of Education.

What are the most popular courses?

All RUW courses are popular, including the courses in Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Banking & Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business and Information Technology, depending on student interest and future plans.

What courses are most recommended by the university based on the demand of the economy?

All courses and majors that RUW offers are designed to the needs of the Bahraini market and economy. Our courses, internships and projects educate and prepare future women leaders with the necessary skills that empower them to compete in the labour market and contribute to it.

How many students are you expecting next year?

We do not have an exact number yet but our numbers definitely keep increasing every year and as you know we have a diverse and multi-cultural atmosphere. We also witnessed great

prospective students’ interests in fairs this year, so we are really looking forward to calculate the number soon.

How is the Royal University for Women different to other educational establishments in Bahrain?

Also RUW offers its students the opportunity to acquire internationally recognised credentials as well as to enable its students to develop the personal skills and confidence necessary to excel in every area of their personal and professional life. All RUW education is in English and our Faculty of Business and Financial Services received a full confidence rating in their program review from the Quality Assurance Authority for Education and Training (QAAET). RUW students are also given the opportunity to go on educational trips every year. Only this academic year, educational trips were taken to different places like China, Belgium, France, New York, London and Kuwait. RUW’s custom-built campus houses studios, lecture halls and technology labs to optimise the learning experience. In addition to its educational facilities and two fully furnished dorms, the Student Centre facility includes a variety of dining options as well as a “Mini Market”. Student Council offices as well as the Clinic are located in the Student Centre. The dedicated Sports Centre includes a swimming pool and fully equipped Gym as well as saunas and shower facilities. DON’T be fooled!

Many students decide to pursue university degrees in finance or business management, believing that this is the fastest way to a top-earning job. However, the simple fact of the matter is that you’ll only be one of thousands of similar graduates competing for a limited number of jobs. You may have to spend years working hard for peanuts just to get experience before securing a well-paid job. The best way to earn big bucks is to pick a specialised field in which there is a high demand for Arabic graduates, ideally in a new but fast-growing sector in the region, such as logistics or engineering. That way, firms are competing to hire YOU, not the other way round!

W

hen first entering Perry’s house, her studio is most probably the cleanest and neatest one we’ve ever seen. Bahraini Perry is just 24, but her overwhelming enthusiasm and obvious talent is enough to make you think otherwise. So how did it all start? “Art has always been a part of me. My grandmother is an artist and I think I just needed that push to be like her,” said Perry. Having studied Fine Arts in Montreal, Canada for four years, Perry decided to venture back to the island to pursue her passion. With “extremely supportive parents” and a tremendously tight bond with her sister, who now lives in Dubai, Perry is enthusiastic, energetic and undeniably excited about her future prospects.

When it comes to naming her work, Perry’s titles are extremely original. “Without giving too much away, I choose a title that the viewer can understand but at the same time, doesn’t give too much away. Being an artist, it is hard to hear criticism but you have to accept it. Every artist is bound to get criticism and I guess that makes you stronger and more confident.”

“I would say painting and drawing are my favourite, especially portraits and faces. I have never really tried landscape but I find there is so much emotion in drawing faces. My style? Many people say I am ‘pop art’ because I like using bright colours. I am definitely not modern art.” When asked whether there are any methods she prefers, Perry said, “I like to use spray paint as it makes the pictures look young but, as you can imagine, they are very hard to source now. The colours are very limited and it isn’t worth the hassle of buying them.”

With Perry’s work first being noticed at the World Beat Café, as well as a serious amount of networking at any event possible, it is a dream come true for this young talent that she now has been given the chance to show off her work at her first solo exhibition. Starting in June, art lovers get the chance to admire Perry’s work in an exhibition entitled “Have You. Need You”. Having been considered to take part in Al Riwaq’s previous exhibition “The Other”, Perry was asked to continue an idea of her own and ultimately came up with this new series.

Bahrain’s Response

“Bahrain has a small market for artists - it is also unfortunately similarly quite small-minded,” said Perry. “There is also a certain taste here, which makes life a bit harder as you really have to push your own. There are a lot of young artists here now, so the market is much better than it was before, but it also makes it so competitive.”

Pieces that deserve serious attention are “You are the only thing that can fix me right now”, “Tied up” (a piece based on the strong relationship with her sister) and a personal favourite “Man’s Best Friend”. Each of her pieces take less than two weeks to finish, which is astonishing when you see just how large each canvas is, and how much detail and attention goes into each piece.

Perry’s Advice

“Believe in your work, always put yourself out there and make it clear where you stand.” GO: To see Perry’s work, Al Riwaq Art Space will be showing her series “Have You. Need You” from June 2.

Making Mirrors

By Gotye WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This is actually the third studio album from the Belgian/Australian artist Gotye, though you would be forgiven for thinking it’s his first. And this is largely thanks to the wild success of his breakout single ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’, the second from the album. The success was helped in no small part by a small group of independant musicians in Canada called Walk Off the Earth, who released a YouTube video of their cover of the single featuring all five musicians playing the song on the same guitar. However, they can’t be given ALL the credit (despite the fact that this particular journalist admittedly had never even heard of Gotye until he saw that cover version), as Gotye was already enjoying a certain measure of success prior to that video. It must have certainly widened his fan-base though, as it wasn’t until after this video that we suddenly heard the song being played endlessly on the radio! But there’s no denying that ‘Somebody That I Used Know’ is an extremely infectious song - powerful, touching and full of raw emotion, it captures that sense of wounded indignance that a messy break up often leaves. And the rest of the album follows suit, with some good and original pop that showcases his singing talents - think Sting for the 21st Century!

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

By Lara Scandar

Lara Scandar is an American-born Arabic singer of Italian, Egyptian and Lebanese descent who rose to prominence after reaching the semi-finals of the Lebanese TV talent show Star Academy, representing Egypt in the competition. Scandar is playing the very difficult game of attempting to straddle the Arabic and Western worlds of music, to limited effect. She was criticised in the talent show for not being ‘Arabic’ enough, though her singing still earned her a decent place. She’s got the looks, and her voice is better than some British and American pop stars who’ve enjoyed much more success. The album is well-produced, but does however lack originality, with a collection of oriental-flavoured dance tracks overladen with Scandar’s vocals. Think Inna with a Middle Eastern touch. It’s going to take more than that to be a global hit these days!

C

28

By Rihanna

By Madonna

This is the twelfth studio album from the Queen of Pop, and as usual, some of the industry’s finest have rolled out to produce it - most notably William Orbit, Benny Benassi and Martin Solveig. Which is lucky, really, because without the talents of these producers it’s possible there would be nothing worth talking about here. The album feels hugely hit and miss, with some parts being truly inspired and others absolutely cringeworthy. For example, ‘Turn Up the Radio’ is a fantastic track where the dance music backing track complements Madonna’s vocals to create something truly special. On the other hand, on ‘Gang Bang’ the only thing wrong with the song is Madonna - her laborious and cliched lyrics sound like something a twelve year-old would rap over a dance track. There’s enough on there to make it a worthwhile purchase, but only for Madonna fans.

C+

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

Nowhere can the ever-creeping influence of UK and European dance music on US RnB be more felt than on this, Rihanna’s latest album. Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris produced two of the tracks, and dubstep makes an appearance thanks to Chase & Status. The good news is that the result, by and large, is a successful blend of Rihanna’s soulful and powerful vocals and backing tracks that manage to be dance-floor friendly without being too cheesy. ‘We Found Love’ was a summer smash hit, and ‘We All Want Love’ is a pleasant ballad. In other parts, the not-so-subtle sexual metaphor can get a bit tiresome, but this is more of an issue with the genre as a whole, though Rihanna does seem to spout more than her fair share. Whilst not as good as Rated R, it’s still a decent offering that will maintain her status as one of the industry’s most successful RnB singers.

TOP FILMS SHOWING THIS MONTH IN BAHRAIN

ON SCREEN The camera caught the exact moment that she realised they’d put itching powder in her space suit...

Prometheus D: Ridley Scott C: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

After discovering clues on Earth to an alien culture in another galaxy, a team of scientists follow the clues to a distant corner of the universe, believing them to be an invitation. However, when they get there, they find the truth to be far more terrifying. Which is lucky, really, because otherwise the film might’ve been a bit boring...

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

So many reasons, but the main one would be Ridley Scott. The legendary producer/ director of the original space horror flick Alien (amongst many other classics) has alluded to loose connections with the old Alien movie and its sequels, although the famous ‘Xenomorphs’ themselves do not make an appearance in this movie. Then we have the actors, most notably Michael Fassbender (300, Inglorious Basterds, X-Men), Noomi Rapace (Girl With a Dragon Tattoo, Sherlock Holmes)

and Charlize Theron (Hancock, The Road, Monster) among others. And then there is the involvement as a co-writer of Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the mystery series Lost, who is sure to bring some real mystery and plot twists to the project. Garnish it with some stunning CGI effects and some good ol’ fashioned alien-related horror, and you have what looks to be one of the most exciting sci-fi thrillers in recent years.

Safety Not Guaranteed D: Colin Trevorrow C: Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, Mark Duplass

Waiting for the lights to turn green in Bahrain when a traffic cop is flicking the switch... That’s when a time machine would REALLY come in handy!

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

After seeing an ad in the paper from a man seeking a companion for time travel, three magazine journalists are sent to investigate the ad for a potentially amusing story about a crazy inventor. However, what they find isn’t what they expected - the man who placed the ad doesn’t seem crazy at all. In fact, he is rather convincing...

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING:

The deliciously off-beat premise for this indie movie is a good start, as the advert itself is hilarious: “Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.” Then you have the acting skills of one of the queens of deadpan off-beat comdey herself, Aubrey Plaza (Funny People, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), which adds an exciting element. What makes the whole thing even more entertaining is that the story stems from a real ad that was placed in a newspaper in the US! You just know Tom Cruise loved playing this part, and that most of the female population of planet Earth (and some of the male) will too!

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World follows the story of a man (Steve

Carrell) in a world facing annihilation thanks to a massive meteor, who embarks on a road trip to meet his high-school sweetheart after his wide leaves him in a panic. However, when his beautiful but crazy next-door neighbour (Kiera Knightley) comes along for the ride, his plans are disrupted somewhat... Playing the harmonica... Yes, that’s the first thing we’d take up if the world was about to end!

Rock of Ages

D: Adam Shankman C: Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: A small-town boy and a country girl head to Hollywood to pursue their dreams of becoming famous, and meet each other on the infamous Sunset Strip, where the hedonistic and decadent 80’s glam metal scene is in full swing. They get caught up in the crazy world of The Bourbon Room, a rock venue fighting for survival from developers who want to knock it down. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: Well, we couldn’t fit any more names at the top, so we’ll put them here instead: Catherine Zeta Jones (who has already proven her musical credentials in Chicago), Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti, and the character of Stacee Jaxx in all his drug-addled, boob-signing glory played by Tom Cruise looks absolutely superb. The movie, based on the smash hit Broadway musical, is a rip-roaring journey through 80’s glam metal, and looks like really good fun. Bring it on!

To Rome With Love is a quirky comedy a la Woody Allen about the lives of a group of Italian and American people living in Rome, and the complicated romances, friendships and affairs between them. Thanks to Allen lots of famous people are in it, including Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jessie Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin.

The 100m dash for dandies was always a popular event...

Through the Keyhole By Stephen King

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

The Wind Through the Keyhole sees the main protagonist, the gunslinger Roland Deschain, and his group forced to pause their travels and take shelter from a fierce storm. Whilst waiting it out, Roland begins to tell a story to the group to pass the time, which forms the basis for the novel. In the story, Roland is a young man, who is sent by his father to a small town to help them against the Skin-Man, a shapeshifter who is terrorising and butchering the townsfolk. The difficult part is finding out who the Skin-Man is, as he never goes on killing sprees in his human form. Together with the town’s sherriff, Roland seeks to expose the Skin-Man and capture or kill him.

This is the eighth book in Stephen King’s Dark Tower series - what he describes as his magnus opus, and is definitely his attempt at high fantasy. Whether you consider it so or not, you can’t deny that the scope of the series is immense, with mythological figures and heroic characters. Though it’s the eighth book, this one isn’t in chronological order, actually taking place between volumes four and five. While it’s a good story on its own, it’s much better appreciated as part of the whole, so if you’re not B+ familiar with the Dark Tower series, it might be best to read up before taking on this book.

Dead Scared

1Q84

The Expats

By S.J. Bolton

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Set in England’s famous Cambridge University, Dead Scared follows the story of Detective Constable Lacey Flint, who is recruited by an old colleague, DI Mark Joesbury, to go undercover on the campus to investigate a spate of apparent student suicides. However, the similarities between the students, who are all socially unconfident and lonely personality types, leads the investigators to believe that someone is preying on their insecurities to either compel them to suicide, or committing the murders themselves...

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This is the second of a planned series of books featuring the same two characters by Bolton, but there’s absolutely no need to have read the first to enjoy this one. Bolton is very good at building the suspense through the plot and the characters, and the added drama comes from the elitist and exclusive environment of one of England’s poshest universities. The two characters have a great chemistry together, and you become especially closely involved with DC Flint, whose own B+ vulnerabilities are exposed by the situation she’s facing.

32

by Haruki Murakami WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Self-defence expert and part-time assassin Aomame finds herself in a weird alternate reality after following a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion. Simultaneously, aspiring writer Tengo finds his reality becoming distorted when he takes on a ghost-writing job for a mysterious author. Eventually the two stories converge, and the two characters are bound together by many strange events over the course of a year.

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

The massively-hyped release of this celebrated writer’s latest offering created massive anticipation, to the point where people queued for a copy outside bookstores. Does it live up to the hype? Well, this really depends - this book is NOT for everyone. Casual readers might find the 900+ page book a laborious read, but more dedicated enthusiasts will lap up the intricate storyline, rich characters and ever-present surrealism with relish. The book does, however, seem to lose some momentum towards the second half, but this is most certainly one of those books that leaves a gaping hole in your life B+ once you’ve turned the last page!

By Chris Pavone

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

Washington resident Kate suddenly finds herself as a housewife when her husband Dexter is posted to a lucractive new job in Luxembourg. Initially, it seems like a boring life for her, until her boredom drives her to start noticing odd things about her neighbours and the other expats she meets. A little bit of snooping begins to uncover further strange behaviours, and soon she begins to suspect that everything around her is not all that it seems. Finally, we begin to see revelations about Kate herself, and a whole bunch of mystery and intrigue ensues...

WHAT’S IT LIKE:

This book requires a certain amount of dedication to begin with - strange facts and suspicious occurrences only hint at hidden secrets at first. However, the book rapidly builds pace about halfway through, and the revelations keep on coming, until you literally can’t stop turning the pages. The ending is quite explosive, as layer upon layer of secrets are peeled away to reveal the true nature of all the B characters within. Not exactly high fiction, but a fun read nevertheless!

Smartphones with LABELS

Smartphones are no new thing – once the staple of important businessmen and spoilt rich kids, now the whole world is getting connected these days, with iPhones, BlackBerrys, Samsung Galaxies and HTCs keeping people online whenever and wherever they are. However, what do the rich kids and CEOs buy now in order to stand out? Well, they buy one of these…

Porsche P’9981 We love all things Porsche Design, from their sheesha pipes (yes, really!) to their shaving kits and even sportswear. Porsche Design already had a range of mobile phones, with cases cut from solid blocks of aluminium alloy, but this is the first time they’ve turned their hands to a smartphone, with amazing results. This particular phone, the result of a collaboration with BlackBerry, recently won “Smartphone of the Year” for 2012 at the prestigious Plus X Awards, chiefly due to combining BlackBerry’s excellent functional capabilities and Porsche Design’s cutting-edge design. Running on the latest BlackBerry 7.1 OS, the phone boasts an enhanced 1.2 GHz processor and 8GB of onboard memory, with an additional 16GB micro SD card included in box. Capable of 720 HD video, the phone boasts both front and rear cameras. Further enhancing the exclusivity of the phone, you’ll be able to show off with a very distinctive limited edition PIN Series only available to Porsche Design P’9981 users – a feature that is extremely exciting to BlackBerry aficionados, but completely irrelevant to everyone else!

Prada Phone by LG The Prada by LG 3.0 is the third handset from LG’s collaboration with the Italian fashion house. Aimed at the fashion-conscious consumer, this handset comes adorned with Prada’s signature Saffiano pattern. Besides its pretty looks, the smartphone packs formidable specs such as an 8-megapixel camera ,8GB of user memory, and a dualcore/dual channel 1GHz processor and dual band Wi-Fi. The smartphone runs Gingerbread (Android 2.3) with a scheduled Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update to come by Q2 2012, and coupled with a huge 4.3-inch NOVA High Brightness Display, this puts it almost on a par with Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Nexus (but not quite). With every detail designed for chic simplicity, this handset also boasts LG’s signature Floating Mass Technology, optically enhancing the thinness of its already impressive 8.5mm depth, with minimal hardkeys completing the sleek simple finish. While not the most heavily stylised phone featured here, nor does it boast the most premium materials and build, it is the most impressive in terms of software and specs.

Vertu Constellation Quest Ferrari Smartphone Take one astronomically pricey phone, brand it with a supercar badge, add an overly elaborate name, and slap it with a price tag that would make Carlos Slim raise an eyebrow, and what do you have? A Vertu smartphone is what. Not that we’re saying the Vertu smartphone is not a good phone – the device boasts a sapphire crystal keypad, a titanium battery cover, and the Ferrari link isn’t just skin deep, with a Ferrari engine coating finish, Ferrari leather trim and a tachometer-inspired clock. However, it does seem to be more form over function. While the hardware is unsurpassed, it bafflingly uses the outdated Symbian S60 OS – software which has been dropped by Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson. The OS has, on the other hand, been heavily modified by Vertu to include a whole range of exclusive features. Buyers also get Ferrari-related services, such as a dealer locator and notification of upcoming Ferrarirelated events. Even the ringtones are Ferrari-oriented, as buyers get three variations of a track-flogged 458 Italia to assign to contacts.

Aston Martin This is one that’ll get the James Bond fans and petrol heads among you really excited. The Mobiado Aston Martin Grand Touch is essentially a Samsung Nexus S (note: NOT the flagship Galaxy Nexus) dressed up in an extremely stylish Aston Martin design with a staggering list of customised luxury materials. For starters, the Grand Touch Aston Martin comes with 139 carats of sapphire crystal, an insert which is actually made out of gold mother of pearl, and a stunning CNC machine-anodized aluminium body. The buttons themselves are sapphire crystal, while the screws are all made out of gunmetal stainless steel. Not only that, Mobiado adds more class to the battery cover by using a single piece of sapphire crystal. Other hardware specifications include a 4-inch display at 480 × 800 resolution, a 5-megapixel camera, but unfortunately, it only runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and not the latest Ice Cream Sandwich. This is a truly exclusive phone that you won’t find in any mall in the Gulf. If you really want one, you’ll have to contact Mobiado directly, and hope that your spending clout bags you one of this limited run.

Tag Heuer We featured Tag Heuer’s MERIDIIST mobile phones last year, and while we absolutely loved these extremely stylish smartphones, aside from having a ridiculously long battery life they were a little limited in features. Not so any more, as Tag have now released this stunning smartphone, called the LINK. Featuring a 1 GHz processor, Google Android 2.2 operating system, and software customizations, this luxury smart phone is designed in Switzerland and hand-assembled in France. Made of high-end materials like steel, 18k rose gold or titanium paired with rubber, alligator skin or leather trim, it runs a skinned (modified in a special Tag Heuer style) version of Android Froyo which, while somewhat outdated, does allow you access to the hundreds of thousands of apps available on Android, and the User Interface looks very good with the Tag Heuer customisation. It also boasts two applications exclusive to the LINK: So Apps and TAG Heuer Mobile Security. And, most impressively, like the MERIDIIST it boasts a standby (can remain on without any use) time of up to 330hrs, or around a fortnight!

LAB TEST

WACOM CINTIQ 12WX Available: Major electronics retailers

AIMED squarely at the graphic designers and digital artists out there, the Wacom Cintiq 12WX is a pressure-sensitive tablet and display on which you can directly edit, with the help of a stylus, vector art and digital illustrations on Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, or other digital imaging software. It’s really for anyone seriously interested in digital graphic design, but completely useless for anyone else, so if you’re not a designer, you might as well turn the page now. If you ARE a graphic designer, the big question is, how does the 12WX fare against other similar tablet and stylus setups? In terms of hardware, not so good – there are better looking tablets out there that do the same job, with thinner edges that make them less bulky. In addition, the extremely bulky cables that provide the power and link the tablet to your desktop make matters worse. The 12-inch screen isn’t a bad size, however, and there are bigger options available, with the 20-inch 20WSX and the 21.3-inch 21UX. Be prepared to pay for them, though, as all three options are relatively expensive. However, when you actually find the room on your desk for the 12WX, and get it all set up, that’s when things get better. The quality of the picture on the screen, and

the responsiveness to your actions, are both excellent. It’s a smooth and engaging experience, and will prove satisfying for artists who do a lot of brush-based digital graphics. However, a minor gripe is that the responsiveness of the stylus on the edges of the screen decreased somewhat, and this is where all the menus and tabs are, so that changing functions and so on can be really fiddly. On the side of the screen are programmable clusters of buttons that can be given different commands depending on your preferences. It also has a programmable switch on the pen, and customiSable pressure sensitivity for the pen and the eraser.

All this means that the tablet can be set up and customised to your own personal needs to a large extent, improving the usability a great deal. And the biggest bonus? Well, the makers have wisely recognised that many ‘artistic’ types tend to be lefthanded, and so they’ve given the 12WX a symmetrical design, with button clusters on both sides, that can be used by both right and lefthanded people. Smart! Overall, the tablet itself works very well as a graphic design instrument, but as a display, it’s a little small. If you have the space and the money, we’d recommend going for one of the larger options, so you don’t have to keep zooming in and out all the time.

SAMSUNG DV300F Available : Techno Blue

HOW many times has it happened? You’ve stood next to a friend, arm outstretched, desperately trying to hold the camera steady and point the lens towards you as you attempt to take a shot of yourselves, only to turn the camera round after the flash to find that you have a lovely picture of the tops of your heads? Well, fear not… In a seemingly endless parade of new digicams, the Samsung Dual View line differentiates itself by boasting two displays - as well as the normal 3-inch LCD screen, there’s a front-facing 1.5-inch screen, allowing you to see the picture you’re about to take when you have the camera pointed at yourself. This isn’t their first Dual View camera, but it is by far their best. For starters, it boasts a resolution of an impressive 16MP, which is big for any happy snapper. However, in addition, it offers a 25mm wide angle lens, which is good for ANY camera, SLR or otherwise, as well as 5x optical zoom. As far as software goes, there is the usual range of shoot settings, but there are also some photo templates and on-board image manipulation functions, so that you can edit the images directly on the camera. The reason for this is thus; the DV300F has in-built Wi-Fi, so that you can upload pictures directly to Picasa, Facebook and YouTube

(for videos) straight from the camera, without having to transfer them to a computer first. However, when you do want to back up images on a computer or Samsung smartphone, the Wi-Fi comes in handy again, as you can transfer them without messing around with cables (which often get lost!). There are even kids games using both the front and rear screens in “Children Mode” to keep the little one’s busy on car journeys, which is a nice feature. Another cool feature is motion photo, where you can add action to sections of still shots. This is demonstrated by a YouTube user called Shuffelle doing the ‘Melbourne Shuffle’ on still shots of busy streets in a rather cool example of the technology! Overall, the sheer list of features on the Samsung DV300F makeS it one of the most impressive digicams out there today. It takes serious steps towards closing the gap between digital cameras and smartphones, which are rapidly taking over as the casual snapper’s camera of choice these days, largely because of the Wi-Fi option.

TECHNOLOGY year warranty and service package, five years GCC Roadside Assist, 12 years rust warranty and first year registration for your money, lowering your long-term costs and reducing the rate of devaluation. Add to that the fact that it’s an SUV (albeit a small one) and you have a winning formula for the Middle East, where we love our SUVs. Now, gripes, because we haven’t found a perfect car yet! Our main gripe with the Q3 is the D-pillar – it creates a huge blind spot on your right rear side which means you have to really crane your neck before changing lanes or merging into traffic. This is mitigated somewhat by the blind-spot warning indicators on the top-spec Q3, but these aren’t included on the model we drove, so you’re on your own there! Our second gripe is the massive difference in the two specifications of the model. You basically have two options; the normal spec Audi Q3 2.0 TFSI 170hp S tronic for BD16,500, and the 2.0 TFSI 211hp S tronic with S-Line trim for BD19,950. Sure, the model we drove is one of the most affordable Audis out there, but do you really have to pay BD3450 to step it up a notch? You’ll

Who is Ali Driver?

always look at the higher spec with something akin to jealousy, and feel like a pauper for not being able to afford it. Couldn’t they have slotted another model somewhere in the middle? Or at least given them both the keyless entry and start? I mean, I have that on my Nissan, for crying out loud! This is an Audi, after all… However, if you’re willing to spend the extra BD3450, you get the true Audi premium feel – the S-Line styling package makes all the difference, and you get a sexier set of 19-inch alloy wheels, BOSE surround sound speakers, keyless entry and start, panoramic glass roof, and so on. You also get the 211hp engine, and considering how much fun we had with the 170hp engine, this one will be an absolute hoot! So what it boils down to is this – if you really want a compact crossover, and you’re willing to spend a little extra, you won’t be disappointed with the normal-spec Audi Q3. It’s a safe, comfortable and practical car that’s hugely fun to drive. However, if you really want that Audi ‘premium’ feel, then you’re going to have to pay the extra cash and go for the top-spec S-Line model. Either way, you’ll enjoy it!

aunched for the first time in the region, the Micra is already a successful model in Europe and Asia, so it’s an extremely important model for Nissan to be launching in the GCC. Which is why they recently flew FACT over to Dubai for the regional launch, where we were treated to a glamorous dinner at the Armani hotel in the Burj Khalifa, with a performance by none other than the famous Arabic singer Nancy Ajram. Which might not have been the smartest idea, as during the event you can bet that not many of the guys were looking at the car much… This was followed by a stay in the Kempinski Mall of the Emirates hotel, and a mornings snowboarding in Ski Dubai (which wasn’t part of the official programme of events…). The Micra was later officially launched in Bahrain in April at a spectacular event at Seef Mall (which was, unfortunately, without Miss Ajram), in the Chili’s parking lot, where there was a colourful laser music show and live DJ. Speaking at the event, Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons Automotive Group General Manager, Declan John McClusky, said, “The Micra, with its sporty and trendy exterior, has a unique character that appeals to young and old alike. We would like the customers to test drive the vehicle and decide on their choice. This car is fun and stylish, and is an exciting option for the buyers in this segment. In addition to its slick looks, it also boasts of a high level of performance within its class, which makes

Among the Micra’s key features are its efficient, largest-in-class 1.5-liter engine, its high levels of safety equipment, including dual airbags and its user-friendly and convenient equipment and interior design, with highly versatile interior seat/stowage configurations. It has also been specifically engineered to provide the driver with nimble handling and a best-in-class turning circle, which is ideal for city driving. VENUE REVIEW

Déjà Vu

Block 338, Adliya (Tel: 1365 7772) BD15-20 per person

DÉJÀ VU has been open for over a year now, so it’s inexcusable that we haven’t yet been to visit this almostnew restaurant and lounge. Tucked away as it is behind the Gulf Hotel, it’s not right in the heart of Block 338, but stands alone as a venue, which is why they’ve gone to all the extra effort to attract punters through its doors. Its biggest news recently was poaching DJ Dave Hayes, the muchloved former Cocoon resident, who now drives the beating heart of the venue’s popular upstairs lounge throughout the week. However, it’s not the lounge we’re talking about here – if you want to find out more about that, see the Venue Spotlight on page 74. Déjà Vu’s downstairs restaurant is a cosy and intimate venue boasting a unique blend of colours and a distinct Mediterranean vibe thanks to the framed photographs adorning the walls. The menu is a varied combination of European and Mediterranean dishes with a number of classic favourites and some not-so-wellknown treasures that will bring you back for further visits so you can be sure to try them all! On this particular visit, we went for the Stuffed Mediterranean Mushrooms and the Watermelon Feta Salad to start. The stuffed

66

mushrooms were excellent, with a deliciously spiced filling topped with melted cheese, and comes highly recommended. The Watermelon Feta Salad was ideal for someone looking for a lighter starter – it’s a refreshing and tasty salad with the added sweetness of the watermelon. For main course it was poultry all the way, with Chicken Gorgonzola (such an unusual dish we couldn’t resist!) and the Déjà Vu Duck. The chicken breasts are marinated in gorgonzola and presented on a bed of potato, and is both delicious and succulent, and doesn’t go the way chicken dishes often do and end up dry. The duck is also very tasty, done in a more classic style with an orange marinade. We were coerced into trying two of the desserts too, so we had the dessert of the day, which was chocolate brownies with vanilla ice cream, and the apple and rhubarb crumble. Both were great, though the crumble was an unusual take on the dish that, while delicious, might disappoint traditionalists! Having seen some of the other dishes on the menu we will be returning to Déjà Vu to try them out, most notably the Cob Salad with blue cheese and apple, and Paidakia Thedrolivano, which is lamb chops with sweet potato puree and spice mango salsa – bring it on!

Sizzling Spices With flavours flowing out through the front doors, the Crowne Plaza has a lot to boast about this June…

Hello to Vapiano

ALREADY well-known to the residents of Bahrain, the Crowne Plaza is definitely a place to go if you are looking to fill that empty stomach of yours. Head down to Spices, the hotel’s Indian restaurant, where you can enjoy the exotic flavours of Hyderabad. The hot biryanis are guaranteed to entice your taste buds. There are also vegetarian options, where all dishes are accompanied by a vegetable salad and mixed vegetable raita. What’s better is that it only costs BD3.950. To finish the meal, head over to Cappuccino’s for some Mango Delights. Cakes, pastries, desserts and drinks are all available and are the perfect way to end a meal. GO: Call 1753 1122 to book your table.

It is always exciting to learn of new places to grab a bite to eat. So, it was with some excitement that we heard about the new Italian eatery at Bahrain’s City Centre…

PART of the SunCity Ventures’ brand, Vapiano is already known in over 100 locations worldwide, including the whole of the US, Europe and the Middle East. What the restaurant itself considers to be ‘the best spot to enjoy a fresh and casual dining experience’ (but then, they would, wouldn’t they?), the food on offer looks pretty tempting. So what’s on the menu? Well for starters, you can try out the typically Italian dishes, such as Bruschetta and Carpaccio, light on the palette and a perfect start to a meal. The hand-tossed salads are one of the specialities, with goodies like Insalata Nizza, consisting of lettuce, tuna, olives and onions, or perhaps the Insalata Mista, where you can add on some filet of beef or king prawns. There are a huge amount of made-to-order fire roasted pizzas – all separated into different price ranges, starting from BD3 to BD4.5, where simple eaters can enjoy a Margherita and the more adventurous of you can sample the Vitello Tonnato, a pizza consisting of roasted veal slices, tuna cream, capers, tomato sauce and mozzarella. Yum yum! There are also a huge number of pasta dishes on the menu and some even more delicious ‘Dolci’ (puddings) such as ‘Death By Chocolate’ and Crema Di Fragola, mascarpone cream with fresh strawberries. What makes this restaurant stand out from the rest is the way that all the food is cooked live in front of you. There is also an innovative way of paying – diners are given a ‘Chip Card’, where they can personally order their drinks and food from the bar and once you have finished your meal, you can give the card back in at reception and your bill will be issued. Definitely try this one on for size, with typically delicious and extremely well-priced Italian dishes. GO: Book your table on 1749 1391 or take a look online at www.vapiano.com.

Wine, Cheese and Conversations @ Déjà Vu

Set in the heart of Adliya, the little gem is pulling out all the stops to make sure you spend hours on end eating, drinking and dancing… DÉJÀ VU, one of the Mediterranean spots in town, is known by its diners as being the place to go to enjoy fresh food made with fresh ingredients and packed with the multi-cultural heritage of the Med. Already bustling every night of the week with events, this venue now has a new night called, yes you guessed it, Wine, Cheese and Conversations. For just BD10 per head, you can spend four hours sampling the best bottles from around the world, indulging in a large variety of special and well-known cheeses and even better, have a natter with your closest friends. with

Chef Alfred Zuberbühler

This month we dine at the table of the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain’s Executive Chef Alfred Zuberbühler, who gives us some insight into great cooking you can even do at home…

C

hef Alfred has been at the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain since January of this year. Having taken on an already successful concept, with the hotel’s different theme nights a popular mainstay of Bahrain’s dining scene, Chef Alfred didn’t want to fix something that isn’t broken. “We keep the formula, but adjust it slightly according to the seasons,” explains Alfred. “For example, as we move into the summer and the hotter weather, we replace nights like the Swiss Fondue night and the Brazilian BBQ with lighter concepts like steak and salad nights. The fondue is more of a winter concept, made for cooler weather. The brunch, on the other hand, only undergoes very minor changes, as it is already so popular.” However, it’s not all more of the same, as certain aspects are being significantly revamped, most notably the Italian night. “We are introducing some very nice new antipasti. We have also portionized a lot of it, with mini dishes of set portions of mixed ingredients rather than trays of food, as we find these are very popular. We have also increased the number of sauces for the freshly cooked pasta to six.” Chef Alfred takes on an interesting concept, as whereas most hotels have several different outlets each serving a particular cuisine, the Mövenpick has one outlet serving several different cuisines. They key to its success, he states, is simple: Quality. “The hotel had to find a concept that worked, and this works well for us. The buffets always feature a very international selection, but always using ingredients of a very high quality, such as Black Angus beef, to ensure that guests are always satisfied. That is why our concept is so popular.” However, this role isn’t entirely

68

new to him, having also managed the kitchens at the Mövenpick Hotel Doha, in Qatar, which had a similar set-up. Other than Bahrain and Qatar, Chef Alfred has worked at Mövenpick Hotels in Egypt, and in Tunisia, which was his first Mövenpick job. Prior to Tunisia, Alfred worked at a luxury resort in the Maldives, which was one of his favourite posts simply due to the sheer beauty of the place. “Despite what people might think, it was never boring being there for a long time, even though it is very remote. A chef never gets bored, because there is always something to be done, so we keep busy. I also had my wife and young son with me there, so I was able to go home to my family at the end of the day, which was very nice.” Chef Alfred was actually there when the tragic 2004 tsunami hit the hotel, but thankfully, the resort didn’t suffer any casualties. It was, however, forced to close down, and Alfred moved to Tunisia. Alfred’s family are also here with him in Bahrain, where his ten yearold son, and now his seven year-old daughter, attend St Christopher’s School. “They both love living in Bahrain, they’ve already made that very clear!” he says. The chef ’s table is actually a concept that isn’t so new to Chef Alfred, having seen it first during his time as a sous-chef in St. Moritz, Switzerland. “In Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, there was an actual chef ’s table,” recalls Alfred. “This was a stainless table in the kitchen where all the chefs from the kitchen would sit and eat and have meetings. Then the GM came into the kitchen one day, and he had seen the ‘Chef ’s Table’ concept in Asia, where guests were invited into the kitchen, so he decided to bring the

FACT BAHRAIN JUNE

june issue bahrain.indd 68

31/05/2012 09:16

concept to the hotel, and it was very popular.” As for our dining experience, we started with pan-seared scallops with grilled watermelon and pineapple salsa. This is a light, refreshing and delicious dish that is perfect for the summer. The scallops are delicate and succulent, and there is a unique smoky flavour from the grilled watermelon, all complemented by the delicious tangy flavours of the pineapple salsa. The trick to cooking the watermelon is to cube it and freeze it first, so that it doesn’t break up when you grill it. Overall, it is a great summer dish – refreshing, and not heavy at all. For the main course, we had beef tenderloin cooked sous-vide style with roasted Mediterranean vegetables and potato espuma (foam). This is the third time we’ve seen foam cooking here at FACT in as many months, having never seen if before, so we asked if there is some sort of trend developing. It seems that while the idea isn’t new (even whipped cream, meringue and mousse are all “foam”), it has been made popular in recent years as a technique of molecular gastronomy. “Foam cooking is actually not a new concept, it has been around for years. I remember my mother cooking with it when I was a little child. But now it’s very a la mode, and people are applying it to practically everything,” explains Alfred. “It’s all about changing and creating different textures and flavours with food to create something unique and new. It’s also about making something light, such as mashed potato, so that you get all the flavour without the heavy feeling.” The meat itself comes out VERY tender, and fully infused with the flavours from the gravy. It’s still very pink in the middle, but it’s NOT rare, as the blood doesn’t run out of the meat when you cut it. Absolutely delicious! “The beef is a very convenient dish to cook for guests at home, because you can pre-prepare everything, and then just plate it up.

You sear the beef, and pack it in a sealable plastic cooking bag with the gravy (which can be bought pre-prepared from supermarkets). Then cook the bag in water at 70 degrees for 20 minutes, and then if you want to keep it warm you can take it out, put the water down to 50 degrees, and put the bag back in until needed.” Even the foam potato can be made at home, as it’s just normal mashed potato, but made more liquid by adding a little more cream and melted butter than usual, and some water too. It is then put in an Espuma foamer, which can be bought from specialist kitchenware stores. “It’s amazing the cooking equipment that is available to anyone who likes to cook at home,” says Alfred. “For example, I was looking for a dehydrator, but my equipment supplier couldn’t provide one, but then I found one in Lakeland, in City Centre mall! You could buy for the home something that wasn’t even available to a hotel kitchen.” So there you go – if you’d like to try these things at home you have all you need, but if you just want to eat it without having to make it yourself, you’ll have to go to the Mövenpick! KICKING off Bushido’s events this month on June 7 is none other than Bushido’s third anniversary! This year, there are three special DJs performing on one night to mark the success of one of the best nightspots in Bahrain. Having had a pretty busy few months with the Formula One, June 7 is the nominated day for the celebrations. The DJs are all from Bushido’s sister properties. First up we have DJ Ravin from BuddhaBar Paris. Then for a mix of world and Latino vibes say hello to Carlos Campos from Barrio Latino Paris. Last, but not least, is DJ Dara Singh of Bushido States – all these DJs have played a pretty big role in the success of Bushido and if this year’s anniversary is anything to go by, we look forward to seeing how big the 10-year celebrations will be! The second event of the month celebrates the Fête de la Musique. Also known as World Music Day, it was first broached in 1976 by the American musician Joel Cohen and then employed by the national French radio station France Musique. Since that point, it was taken up by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture Jack Lang in 1981. Marking a 30-year point since it first took part in Paris, the festival is set to take place at Bushido this year on June 21, where jazz enthusiasts can marvel at the talents of Eric Seva. Having recorded more than 80 albums, he has spent the past 25 years discovering musicians, cultures and musical styles. With a strong reputation already built, he has collaborated with Chris Rea (on his European tour), Celine Dion and Michel Jarre, to name a few. Packed with emotion and intense style, Eric is a genius on the saxophone and the vocals. Unique and soulfully addictive, this man is worth a watch. The night is also going to hear the sounds of saxophonist Franky Flowerz, who will be showing off his musical skills, while Block 338’s own DJ Kaz will play at the start of the night and prepare you all for some wild tunes from DJ O. You can check out some of his music at www.djobot.com. The final part of the summer finale will be on June 21 at Mezzaluna. Headed by DJ Hassan Ghazzawi, this man started off his career by DJing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2008 by performing in private house parties, beach parties and Redbull events in the city of Jeddah. He then went on to continue his journey to perform internationally, including the UK, USA, Lebanon, Bahrain, Qatar and Egypt. Known for his electronic madness, excitement and passion, he specializes in House, Electro, Tech House, Progressive and Minimal styles. As usual these are private events for X-Clusive members and their guests, so make sure you latch onto someone who is already a member! GO: Doors will be open at 9pm and will be closed by 1:30am so make sure to come early to grantee an entry. To find out more, call 3662 0460.

Let Cocoon Be Your Salvation! The Balearic brand Salvacion Ibiza Republik is hitting Cocoon once more this month with special guest DJ Inaki Santos on June 29…

SALVACION Ibiza Republik is proud to present to Bahrain Inaki Santos. A man who started spinning records on nights at local bars and nightclubs in his home town was pretty quick to develop his own style. After a short while, this musician moved on from the average nights in his hometown Tudela in Spain, to playing at some of the biggest nightclubs in town. Once the idea of really ‘making it’ became more realistic, Inaki started producing tracks and remixes to take his DJ sets to the next level and really making them his own. His first released remix was called ‘Auditorium’, and came out on Selecta Recordings in 1999. Over the next year, he continued his DJ dominance in Spain and started playing alongside people like Abel Ramos, Simon & Shaker, Angel Sanchez and DJ Neil. His tracks have also been supported by some of the best DJs in the world – Luciano, Pablo Ceballos, David Tort, Roger Sanchez, Sergio Fernandez and Mario Ochoa. This musical man seems to be going from strength to strength, now with releases on Toolroom Records, Nervous Records, Sphera Records, Hotingers, Deepperfect Records, Ole Music, Musik X-Press, Musak Records, Distini Recordings, Real4Play and Streetside Records. Last year saw Inaki continue to create in-demand tracks and some pretty electrifying sets in Spain. People of Bahrain and keen Cocoon visitors, if you are looking for a man of motivation and the need to succeed, then write this date in permanent pen into your diaries.

Marvellous Mexican Try something new this month with some mouth watering dishes at the Elite Crystal…

WE have all dreamt of disappearing to some exotic places - countries packed with cultures, smells and amazing landscapes. One place that has all three of these is Mexico. Renowned for its spices, flavoursome food, music and a slightly more toxic beverage starting with T, which many of us may be acquainted with one too many times, Mexico is definitely a ‘go-to’ place on everyone’s travel list. Well now you don’t have to fork out your entire salary for a trip there to sample the delights! The Elite Crystal Hotel is putting on a Sombrero Night every Wednesday, where from 9pm onwards diners can add some spice to their week and start to look forward to the weekend! Those of you heading down will be treated to a fully decorated eating area, with typical Mexican themed designs, including wild cacti, serapes, Mexican hats (of course - no party would be complete without them) and mouth watering margaritas. The Bora Bora indoor and outdoor seating, which overlooks the water lace cascade, will be the hosts of the Wednesday nights, where diners can choose from Texas BBQ feasts or the Latino favours of Mexico. What’s more is that there will be live music that will truly whisk you away into the complete Mexican experience. So come, grab all your amigos, get your salsa dance moves perfected and get your best Mexican outfits. Entrance is just BD9.9 per person (a bargain if you ask us) and head on down to the Wild Wild West. GO: Book your table on 3602 0630.

A Health Tip from bni

High heels could save knees!

H

igh heels, as favoured by Sarah Jessica Parker, may actually be good for you, it seems. Researchers at Warwick and Oxford Brookes universities discovered that wearing high heels may make women less likely to develop arthritic changes in their knee joints as they age. At the very least, they were no worse off than those who opted for lower footwear. The study comprised 111 women aged 50 to 70 and it’s thought that by exercising the muscles of the leg, heel-wearers may build up better support for their knees. Especially if they regularly hit the dance floor. Professor Margaret Thorogood, from Warwick University, says, “Women who wear stiletto heels will be reassured to learn that their choice of fashion-before-comfort footwear will not lead to joint problems and may even prevent them.” -Bahrain National Life is the only local

// The Dream Body

Centre is Back!

After several months absence while a new venue was renovated, the Dream Body Centre returns, offering their highly specialised weight-loss programmes to the people of Bahrain. FACT catches up with the Dream Body Centre’s founder Suhail Al Gosaibi to find out more about the new facility…

Why did you decide to relocate the Dream Body Centre to Sanabis? The reason we moved was because of high demand. We’ve been receiving complaints for a very long time that we are “too far” for many people. I’ve recognised that we needed to open closer to Manama for a long time, but could never find the right location. It’s really hard these days to find a good showroom space in a busy area with enough parking. When we finally found the space in the Bahrain Mall, we went for it! What new facilities and features does the new location have that the old one didn’t? Our concept is based on doing

78

circuit training on unique and easy to use hydraulic machines. We have two training areas, one for men and one for women, as well as changing facilities, showers, lockers, etc. It’s the same as the old one, only bigger and better. Are you still offering the same specialised weight-loss programmes that you did before? The DBC is not a diet centre or clinic. You lose fat and tone muscle by training on specially designed circuit-training equipment. The training area consists of a circuit of 23 sections (or stations) arranged in a circle, which, as mentioned, includes several specialised hydraulic

is

machines. These machines do not have weight stacks and are filled with fluids. They are completely different from regular training equipment. The machines use “double positive resistance”, this means that two muscles can be targeted at once, in opposing directions - you feel resistance when you push, and when you pull the machine. Basically, you get double the benefit of regular machines in just half the time. The resistance on the hydraulic machines adjusts automatically to the speed at which you use the machines. The faster you push or pull, the harder the resistance, and the slower you push or pull, the lower the resistance. The machines automatically adjust to each person’s strength and ability level. No other training equipment does that for you. When you enter the equipment area of the Dream Body Centre you will see a circuit that contains the hydraulic machines. You start at any machine and use it continuously for 30 seconds. A timer will alert you when you should go to the next station. You spend about 30 seconds on each machine, and go around the complete circuit twice, thus having exercised your whole body in 23 minutes! I’m very proud of the fact that we are the only people on the planet - as far as I know - that offer two money back guarantees, including a “double your money back” guarantee! If you don’t get your Dream Body, I’ll give you your money back! Do you have any special packages on offer to attract customers to your new location? Yes, we are offering two months free to anyone who joins us before the end of June. Do you have more expansion plans for the near future? Absolutely, God willing we plan to open one more location in Bahrain. Most likely Muharraq, if we can find a good location. I’ve also been wanting to get into Juffair for ages, but there are no good showrooms there. Furthermore, we plan to franchise next year, which will make us the first Bahraini company of its kind to franchise its system, and one of very few Bahraini franchises overall. I hope to have dozens of DBC’s in the GCC and Asia in the next five years! GO: For more information, log on to www.dreambodycentre.com, or call 17 582 982.

Health Fitness

vs.

Our Health Columnist is fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, who believes that a more back-tobasics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle…

IT’S a common thought today that health and fitness go hand-in-hand. They do not. It is possible for somebody to be very fit yet very unhealthy. The average professional NFL player dies at fifty-eight today but the average life expectancy in the USA is seventy-eight years. Stories like Piermario Morosini, a professional footballer who died recently at age 25, appear to be on the rise. These athletes are classic examples of fit but not healthy. The World Health Organization states that, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (1946). Many professional athletes are under enormous amounts of chronic stress, their nutrition is often pro-inflammatory and they are physically and mentally busted. Google the number of NFL players who have committed suicide recently and the numbers are startling. Okay, I’ve made my point, but how does this affect you and your family? In one’s quest to be fit we are simply trying to improve our physical capacities and some key mental attributes. To live a long and prosperous life we need to focus on our health first. Above, the ‘WHO’ states that health includes an “absence of disease or infirmity”. If you are negatively and excessively influenced by stress, depression, poor nutrition, a weak social circle or inactive lifestyle then you are not healthy. In a nutshell this leads to a shorter life expectancy and a poorer quality of living. The person who has officially lived the longest on this planet is the late Jeanne Calment. She was a French woman who lived to 122 years old! She was present when the Eiffel Tower was unveiled and for its 100-year anniversary! She also claims to have met Vincent van Gogh. Calment was no super athlete but she did keep her mind and body active. She cycled everywhere and took up fencing at 85! It is also claimed that she consumed vast quantities of olive oil and high-quality chocolate. At Tribal Fitness we work to improve our people’s fitness capabilities but returning them to their healthy roots is our number one priority! GO: For more information, or to get involved with Tribal Fitness, email craig@tribalfitness.com, or call 3947 3710

BEING happy in life does not happen by accident, and a more constant sense of happiness does not come through the things we own or the fun things we find in life to entertain ourselves with. To be happy and fulfilled is an art that we need to learn and master. The way we think affects the way we feel, so to have positive thoughts about life will take you a long way. Meditation is an extremely important part in creating a life of joy, ease and energy. We are fortunate that so many different opportunities abound for us to create this life I am talking about. In Bahrain we are so lucky to have the opportunity to be able to choose from different ways in which we can enrich our lives. Just this past month I found what has got to be one of the most beautiful ways in which we can create a joyous peaceful life. It is most aptly called: “The Art of Living”. “The Art of Living” is based on the practice of Sudarshan Kriya. It involves using very specific breathing techniques which harmonize the body, mind and emotions. Studies show that certain types of breathing are related to certain emotions. For example short fast breaths are related to the emotion of anger. By using this breathing technique one actually releases the negative emotions which do not serve us. It has been found that the hormone prolactin, which is a feel-good hormone, increases after practicing Sudarshan Kriya. In short, you feel absolutely fabulous! What impressed me very much too was the gentleness and kindness of the instructors. So, a few weeks after completing the course life looks even better than it did before, so I see where they were coming from. If you would like to attend a course you can call Dr. Bhramara at 39837475, or log on to www.artofliving. org. They are, in fact, holding a course from June 2 to 7, so why not contact them and enroll yourself? Happy Breathing! GO: For a personal consultation call 3669 6666

FINAL WORD

What’s your

BAHRAIN

IQ

S.A.T’s? M.B.A’s? Pah! In Bahrain, only one test score really matters: your Bahrain IQ!

Many venues around Bahrain are throwing their last parties this month before a summer hiatus until September. Do you:

a attend each and every party, racking up hundreds of dinars in bar bills, because they all close for a month in July anyway? carry on as usual, as you’re not a big party animal anyway? ignore them all completely, because you’re going to Ibiza for a month this summer, and nothing else even comes close?

b c

The Bahrain Summer Festival kicks off this month. Do you:

a attend each and every event, as this might be your only chance to get some culture and

entertainment before the summer really kicks in? attempt to hide it from your kids so you don’t get dragged along to see Barney the Dinosaur, or something like that? Ibiza, remember? Stupid…

b c

It’s Father’s Day this month. Do you:

a treat your ‘old man’ to a great day out with lots of pressies to show your appreciation for all

the things he’s done? wait until the last minute, and in a panic randomly choose something from our father’s day guide and rush out and buy it? wait expectantly to be showered with gifts, because YOU’RE the dad now, and after all the bloody birthdays and Christmases and ferrying round of hyperactive kids, it’s about time YOU got some presents, and if you don’t somebody won’t be borrowing the car this weekend…?
