Creative Minds

“There’s nothing wrong with staying small. You can do big things with a small team.” - Jason Fried.

E

ntrepreneurial spirit is well and truly alive in Bahrain, and that’s what the March issue of FACT is celebrating. More specifically, small businesses born out of one idea; be that personal interest, passionate hobbies or, simply, a smart idea that connects and works well in Bahrain. Starting p25 we speak to five women, and founders of a small business in Bahrain to learn more about their individual entrepreneurial ventures. We also round up some other home-grown pursuits, highlighting individuals who have taken one creative idea, teamed with tons of dedication, and set up a small business (p36). Reading all about these different stories might just be the inspiration you need to take that leap towards your own entrprise. Staying on the road of all things small, we’ve picked some of Bahrain’s best hole-in-the-wall-style food joints where you can savour amazing cuisine (p41). These places prove that you don’t have to be part of a huge franchise to offer big plates, great tastes, and a welcoming atmosphere to enjoy good food! Our travel offering this month takes you on a culinary journey around the world, with globally-famous dishes to try on your visits (p45). We’ve even found the best places in Bahrain where you can find these dishes, so there’s no excuse, you’ve all got to get out there this month and do a food hop! Though we might be on a small island, there are some really BIG things kicking off in March. I mean, how many of you scrambled to get tickets to see John Legend? And how awesome is it to have such a prominent name in the music industry visiting Bahrain? Pretty cool, right? This is all thanks to the 10th edition of the annual Spring of Culture festival, which never fails to impress with its programme of events. Check out are picks of the festival line-up on p20. It’s International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day this month, so make sure to show some well-deserved TLC to all the special ladies in your life! You’ll find happenings, dining promotions and lots of gift ideas throughout the magazine. My goal this month is to cook up a worldly dinner of epic proportion (here’s to wishful thinking). If you want to see how that goes down, keep an eye on our instagram @factmagazine and share your food pics with us. Happy feasting all!

Oishi Sushi

Discover more of Bahrain with FACT Finds. Every month we’ll bring you a new hotspot, our favourite happening, eatery, activity, or interesting find from around the city. Oishi Sushi is the new gem of a Japanese restaurant tucked away on the famous “American Alley” in Juffair. Being sushi-lovers in the FACT office, we decided to head over there for a late lunch and see what all the noise was about. The décor of the restaurant screams authentic Japanese, with wooden flooring, deep maroons and browns on the wall, contemporary wall art and beautiful Japanese fans decorated at each corner of the restaurant. On the ground floor there’s bar-style seating, perfect for a quick and casual bite to eat. Upstairs, you’ll be greeted with a cosy dining area, with a tatami-style or zashikiinspired traditional Japanese seating area, all decked out with plush cushions and tableware. The menu was vast and the variety was amazing! Sushi, Sashimi, Salad, Temaki, Chirashi and Teppanyaki; Oishi Sushi has it all. For the starters we opted for the popcorn shrimp and ebi tempura; crispy and flavourful. We went on to try the sushi platter – Box ‘B’ which includes all the types of makis you can think of! The sushi platter is great for sharing if you’re in a big group of friends! Finally, the dessert selection was difficult; we managed to narrow our selection down to banana tempura with ice cream. Biting into all the different textures of soft and crispy, this tempura-twist dessert was definitely the right choice to make. Our visit to Oishi Sushi was bliss! The staff, ambience and food was perfect – cute and quaint! If Japanese food is your thing then this place should be next on your eating-out list. Creator and founder of Oishi Sushi, Bousy El Khoulani, has definitely done an impeccable job of putting together an authentic Japanese food experience. GO: Oishi Sushi is located at The Mall Juffair. This non-verbal performance is great entertainment for the entire family.

The Makeup Manual “We conduct the classes in our studio and teach basic tips, like eyes, contour and party makeup, focusing on non-artists for their personal knowledge”

Mai Al Moayyed

GO: Visit www.themakeupmanual.com for more information.

26

fact magazine

Mai’s obsession with makeup is intense. She decided to explore and share her love of all things beauty by starting a dedicated makeup tutorial site; The Makeup Manual. “I completed Bachelors and Masters in Investment and Finance from Newcastle University in the UK,” Mai reveals. With an already vast knowledge of products and techniques, Mai pursued this interest further and developed a firm grasp of all things makeup related. “I started taking classes, where I taught non-artists ‘how to apply makeup on their own,” she tells us. There was no looking back after that, and the outcome was The Makeup Manual. “It is a manual for any woman to learn the A to Z of makeup,” Mai explains. “We teach, train, sell and apply makeup, on the blog.”

Mai started this as a simple beauty blog, and, eventually, with the tremendous public response, it changed into a more professional blog with reviews and other interesting beauty essentials. Curious to know more about her classes, we quizzed Mai about how they work. “We conduct the classes in our studio and teach basic tips, like eyes, contour and party makeup, focusing on non-artists for their personal knowledge,” Mai reveals. So, any of you looking for some real beauty tips from a local expert, head to The Makeup Manual today. With tons of beauty looks for women to experiment with, we ask Mai what her favourite signature look is. “I prefer an extra simple look with full coverage yet very natural; glamorous but non-cakey,” she describes. And what sets Mai apart from other makeup tutors? “We let clients choose what they want rather than convincing them on what we desire,” she says. “Honesty is the key to success,” she says. “For example, you get sponsored by a brand and you have to say nice stuff about their products. I don’t do that. I say what I feel and that is how I gained familiarity and respect.” A successful entrepreneur and growing in her field, Mai is an inspiration for many. Especially for anyone looking to get into the world of beauty, she advises: “Makeup is a talent which you might have or not, with practice you will know if you are destined for it. Don’t force yourself into it; accept your talent the way it is!” Well said!

When it comes to creative talent, Wafa Alobaidat is a role model entrepreneur in Bahrain. She’s the Editor-in-chief at Sketchbook Magazine, the Founder and Creative Director of Obai & Hill and the Founder of Bahrain’s newest creative space – Malja. A successful young entrepreneur, Wafa is a woman with many talents and ideas and one who dares to explore the dimensions of her ability. “I began my career working with renowned fashion designer Liza Bruce, and her husband, interior designer and artist, Nicholas Bruce, while I was a student at Chelsea College of Art and Design, in London,” she recalls. Wafa learned all the different aspects of the fashion business, while working with this established duo. She picked up skills like sales, PR, product buying, merchandising, and pricing, having helped in all areas of their business. Wafa has taken her creative knowledge at the helm and catapulted herself into one of the country’s most prominent businesswomen. She launched Sketchbook Magazine, an online guide to design and illustration, in 2009: “I was looking for a raw sketchy magazine, rich in illustrations and drawings; more like my own sketchbook,” she says. She has contributed to various magazines including High Life Dubai, Borderline, and Prim Magazine in New York, as a fashion journalist. The next logical step 28

for Wafa was to launch another more involved creative platform. So came Obai & Hill, a bespoke agency providing creative services and solutions in areas of design, PR, marketing, and digital. “In Bahrain our client portfolio includes brands like Al Haddad Motors and Vapiano, and local brands like Bahrain Flour Mill and Green Diamond,” Wafa reveals. Her newest baby is Malja Bahrain; a spacious warehouse to bounce innovative ideas: “Malja is like an open space for creative individuals from a diverse selection of artistic fields, to come together to cultivate and perfect their talents,” she explains. With a secured location in Amwaj Islands, on lovely green ground, Malja – a Red Bull space – opened its doors just weeks ago, bringing culture and arts to the forefront of Bahrain’s creative community. Wafa has a lot planned for the future: “I am hungry to achieve more, and there is still so much to do,” she says. “I am publishing a book this year, and launching two new products as part of the Obai and Hill brand,” she adds. She also has power-packed advice for youngsters: “You need to be unrealistic to pursue what you want. BED & Biscuits BOUTIQUE PETS HOTEL “Your passion for something should be the reason you open the business, not just because of the money.” You may have heard the buzz about Bed & Biscuits, a one-of-a-kind concept that caters to many people’s best friends – their pets! That’s right, a place to take your pets for a holiday of their own in a friendly, fun, homely and professional environment. The brain behind Bed & Biscuits is Julija Krivickaite. Together with a team of trained animal-lovers the pets hotel provides a sanctuary for dogs and cats, whilst the owners are away on vacation or when pets need a little escape to hang out with other furry friends. So, where did the idea for Bed & Biscuits come from? “Well, actually it started at home,” Julija says. “At that time we had four dogs, and whenever we had to travel we didn’t really have anywhere to keep them so we would ask our friends to take care of them. And all our friends know that we love animals, so they would ask us to do the same when they travelled,” she explains. “In the end, we thought, ok let’s make this an official business.” Bed & Biscuits, clearly an entrepreneurial venture with passion, opened in summer 2014 and has space for seven large dogs, nine small dogs and room for 10 cats. There’s a vast recreation area outside with plenty of dog-friendly toys to keep the pawed guests happy. There’s even a small swimming pool for the pets to cool off, and everything from feeding time to playtime, grooming, and bath time is well taken care of by the 30

team, which includes handlers from India with degrees from the Dog Whisperers training school. And it’s not just dogs and cats that need looking after. Julija tells us that the hotel has already cared for turtles and parrots too, having an aquarium and birdcages to house these pets. “This is why it’s a boutique hotel,” Julija says. “We don’t like to be called a kennel, because we want to make sure that we can take care of all of the pets that we have in, at any one time – not just to collect pets. “There might be some pets that are on medication or they have specific diet requirements, so we have to be careful about the food we give to them,” she adds. “We take care of each pet based on their individual needs.” Julija’s attentive and caring nature towards animals is something that goes all the way back to her childhood. “For me, since I was a little girl, we always had cats and small dogs back at home in Lithuania, so it’s always been a big part of my life,” she recalss. “It’s just something that’s very natural. We have seven dogs now – four

Jack Russell Terriers and three German Shepherds.” These happen to be the same highly-trained German Shepherd dogs that make up a part of Bed & Biscuits’ security team (in addition to CCTV and roundthe-clock presence from staff ). We love Julija’s outlook on the whole concept of Bed & Biscuits: “Your passion for something should be the reason you open the business, not just because of the money,” she says. “The best thing is when people come in with their pets and they say ‘my friend recommended this place to me,’ then you know that you really have been helping.” Bed & Biscuits is giving pet owners in Bahrain something that they desperately need, that is, a place that offers peace of mind in the knowledge that pets are safe and looked after well, while the owner is away. In some ways, it’s a lot like a vacay for the pets too. If word of mouth is anything to go by, Bed & Biscuits is sure going to be a busy place and expansion plans may happen quicker than Julija would have expected!

Chawan: Authentic Japanese Tea House “I want people to come here and feel like I’m taking them on a trip to Japan… I wanted people to come in and feel like they’re in a home, not visiting a business.”

Budoor Al Murbati

You often hear of life-changing travels, where people are inspired to do something brand-new. When a journey that took them out of their comfort zone and into a whole new way of living pushes them to share that experience with others. We found one of those people right here in Bahrain. Enter Budoor, a young lady who spent three years teaching English and living in the suburbs of Sasebo, Japan, the place where her entrepreneurial vision for creating an authentic Japanese tea house, in Bahrain, came alive. “I love art and I love porcelain,” Budoor says. “I lived near Imari where chinaware originated, so I got a chance to see the art of Japanese porcelain. “Everything they [the Japanese] do is very artistic and the way they preserve, 32

and hold onto their culture and history is what’s inspiring,” she adds. You can see it in everything from their homes, to the restaurants, I wanted to bring that here and incorporate it with a little bit of Bahrain.” Budoor turned what began as an idea into reality with Chawan (meaning tea bowl in Japanese), which opened at The Lagoon, Amwaj Islands, in July 2014. This place is pretty impressive; Japanese instrumental music plays as you take a seat on the tatamistyle flat chairs and wide tables. There’s even a corner dedicated to the real traditional floor seating for those who want the ultimate Japanese experience. Budoor will greet diners in her beautiful Yukata, and everything from the tableware, the cutlery, the tea cups, the teas, and most ingredients, are all from Japan. In fact, Budoor would visit a huge annual porcelain festival, while living in Japan, to buy the selected dishes she wanted to use for Chawan. She even took cooking classes with local housewives to learn the art of Japanese cuisine, and she, also, speaks fluent Japanese. But the biggest feat of all is that Chawan is truly a one-woman business; Budoor is the behind the scenes and the front of house here. She takes orders, prepares the food, serves the delicious dishes and teas, and cleans up too. Wait, did we tell you she also works a full time job designing on-air graphics for Al Arab News channel? Now, THAT’s dedication. “I want people to come here and feel like I’m taking them on a trip to Japan,” Budoor explains. “I wanted people to come in and feel like they’re in a home, not visiting a business.” Budoor also wants to promote conscious eating through Chawan. “People

Everything is made inhouse and I try to substitute every ingredient to make it healthier.” We love that Budoor has included menu items like Mochi ice cream and onigiri (anime fans will know all about these rice balls with filling) – completely authentic Japanese dishes that you can’t find anywhere else in Bahrain, last we checked anyway! Budoor is also introducing some of the cultural things that are big in Japan, like karaoke nights on Sundays; a yukata dining experience; and a hands-on Japanese calligraphy session too. Budoor is a great example of a young entrepreneur with a hard work ethic and pure passion for her love of a distant land. We’re amazed by her commitment and enthusiasm to share her adoration for Japanese culture. On behalf of all foodies in Bahrain, we say Arigato Budoor, and tachidomaru na (keep going!).

MAMA INSTANBUL Now this is one those stories that really makes you appreciate all the different cultures around the world. Why? Because Necla Albayir is the woman behind the new hole-in-the-wall foodie hotspot, Mama Istanbul, located at The Lagoon, Amwaj Islands.

Now this is one those stories that really makes you appreciate all the different cultures around the world. Why? Because Necla Albayir is the woman behind the new hole-in-the-wall foodie hotspot, Mama Istanbul, located at The Lagoon, Amwaj Islands. Necla moved to Bahrain around six months ago to be closer to her daughter, Melek, and to share her culinary skills for hearty Turkish cuisine. With 28 years hospitality experience under her belt – Necla lived and worked in Australia, running a Turkish restaurant – this lady has some serious home-grown cooking talent that dates back to her childhood days. “I grew up in a village in Turkey and was always helping my mum in the kitchen,” Necla says. “She would say ‘do this’, and I would do it. The dough, for example, I learned from my mum. “When I moved to Australia, I didn’t know any English,” she recalls. “The Turkish community there helped me to get a job working in the kitchens at a local kebab shop, so that’s where I started.” Necla has come a long way from her humble beginnings, and after serving up delicious Turkish dishes to diners in Australia; it is now the turn of the people in Bahrain to taste her homely fare. Mama Istanbul isn’t your regular kebab joint – it has an interactive service where you tickpick your mains, toppings and sauces (a great concept that makes sure you’re order is always correct). There’s mouth-watering doner kebab, shish wraps, pizza, and our absolute favourite – the traditional Turkish pide – a classic flatbread dish with a huge choice of toppings. We’re impressed to learn that Necla, along with her daughter, created the whole menu, 34

“I grew up in a village in Turkey and was always helping my mum in the kitchen.” and that this mama doesn’t cut any corners when it comes to cooking. She instils in her kitchen staff exactly the same values, work ethic and methods, as she did in Australia. “I tell the guys in the kitchen here ‘you have to marinate the chicken my way, you have to do the pide dough my way,’ everything is done as we worked in

Australia,” she says. For Necla, Mama Istanbul is a venture very close to her heart, as she explains that the support of her daughter and family in Bahrain really helped the business idea turn into the cosy food joint it is now. She says: “Melek pushed me to come here and open the business so that I can work here doing the same thing but closer to her. I wasn’t sure because I don’t know the Middle East very well but Melek said, ‘mum you have an opportunity here, and you’ll be ok’.” She makes the dough, she marinates the meat, and she even creates an excellent version of Australia Masterfoods’ chilli sauce, all while training the chef and working the front-of-house too. Entrepreneurs 101 Bahrain is booming with creative individuals who have pursued entrepreneurial projects to create their own small business. We have a snapshot of some of these exciting ventures…

Bader Mattar, Supremo

Hala Al Khaldi, Diet Delight

Bader has always wanted to be in the food industry and after finding the perfect location in Riffa, he started construction of Supremo in September 2014, with the pasta and pizzeria opening a few months laster in December last year. Bader’s ultimate goal was to make his mark in the food sector in terms of providing top quality cuisine to the customer. Balancing a healthy lifestyle and eating ‘junk’ was always a problem for Bader, so he decided to choose a type of cuisine that he loved and which would appeal to many others. Naturally, for Bader, this was Italian! His vision with Supremo is to provide healthy homemade recipes to the customer, allowing diners to eat yummy food that is fresh and cooked with healthy ingredients. Supremo serves tasty Italian food such as pasta that is handmade to perfection. The famous pizzas are all cooked in a brick chamber, which is something new to Bahrain’s dining scene. His outlook to the future is very bright, and he hopes to open a few more branches of Supremo across Bahrain.

Since childhood, Hala always had an interest in food and loved to explore different cuisines. She always knew that one day she would end up in a career that was surrounded with food. While growing up, she became more aware of foods that were good and bad for you, which made her curious to learn more about eating habits. After studying Public Health, Dietetics, and Nutrition at university, Hala worked in a hospital and at the same time started her own private business, Diet Delight, to help people make the right choices to live a healthy life. The concept included combining healthy low calorie recipes that you can actually enjoy, and lose weight at the same time. Clients have personalised assessments after which a meal plan is designed to fit individual needs. All meals are delivered every day to the client’s home or office, hassle-free. Three years since its conception, Diet Delight has proudly achieved what it had promised, “Eat Great and Lose Weight”. For Hala the most rewarding feeling is when a client is happy and healthy. After discovering a whole world of sophisticated beauty brands that were purely organic and all natural, and especially as these worked well for her, she wanted to share her findings with the GCC region and so The Jamila was born. Fit4Life is a 7-day all-inclusive fitness retreat programme based in Bahrain. From Thursday-to-Thursday, groups of six to 20 guests will join up to four certified fitness instructors in luxury resort accommodation for a daily programme of varied exercises, five healthy meals per day, daily optional lectures and seminars about fitness and nutrition, and more. Two of the trainers, Ali and Mohamed have their own stories that led them to Fit4Life. Ali had struggled with weight loss for most of his life. At the age of 17, when he moved away for university, he got on a treadmill and jogged for 10 minutes, and those were “the hardest 10 minutes” of his life. But, since then, he’s been hooked on exercise. Ali has grown to enjoy the immense rush that you feel after even a tiny little workout. Mohamed’s story begins in third grade when he was a part of the school’s gymnastics team, going on to participate in the West Riffa Club ‘under 14s’ football team and the West Riffa Club ‘under 16s’ basketball team. He’s had aptitude and passion for fitness from early childhood and decided to focus on individual sports, so joining in with Fit4Life seemed like a natural fit. Between Ali and the other amazing trainers on the Fit4Life programme you’ll be in good hands. Imagine a 7-day ‘stay-cation’ where you lose weight, meet awesome like-minded people and feel great! What could be better than that?

FOOD CULTURE

With it being the entrepreneurs’ issue, we thought it only right to celebrate small businesses in Bahrain with a list of our favourite ‘hole-in-the-wall’ type food venues in the country. Some of these were picked for cuisine, some for atmosphere, and others for their unique foodie concepts and lesser-known locations. They were all, however, chosen by the FACT team to celebrate our love for small foodie places… forget the franchises, you’ll want to try these dining joints by the time you reach the end! Happy eating… with Eggs, Mathrooba and Liver. However, this place has been made famous for its exceptional selection of teas, like Chai Karak, Chai Darseen, and Mint Chai. There’s also a wonderful variety of tasty traditional breads, bagels and roti sandwiches to whet the appetite. Pizza Margherita - Italy The margherita is a humble combination of dough, tomato sauce and cheese, and if cooked with good, fresh ingredients, it can prove a highly satisfying meal. Though the pizza all over Italy would be more than palate-pleasing, it’s the birthplace of the margherita – Naples – where you’ll find the most appetising choices. It was in 1889 when chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi, created a pizza resembling the colors of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil), for Queen Margherita of Savoy, when she visited Naples. Since then, the modest pizza has grown into one of the most recognisable symbols of Italian food culture in the world. Try it: Pizza Express, The Lagoon, Amwaj.

Huevos Rancheros - Mexico Huevos Rancheros translates to “eggs ranch-style” in Spanish, and this yummy-looking dish has Mexican breakfast favourite. The basic Huevos Rancheros is made up of eggs, beans, tortillas, and sometimes various meats. It’s the dish that was traditionally served mid-morning, in substantial quantities, when ranchers would take a break. Born out of Mexican farms, this mouth-watering breakfast has spread lat rollercoaster speed across Mexico and The Americas. On your plate is fried eggs served with a lightly fried tortilla, covered with a tomato chilli sauce or salsa, refried beans and condiments like sour cream and guacamole. It’ll be the only thing you’ll want for breakfast when visiting Mexico! Try it: Organic Food & Cafe, Seef Mall.

Bibimbap - Korea As far as the saying ‘you eat with your eyes’ goes, bibimbap is a true visual feast – and it tastes pretty darn good too! This is a Korean comfort food with up to five different colour toppings to go with the rice – for nutrition and aesthetics. It’s a one-bowl wonder of steamed rice and sautéed vegetables with a fried egg on top. Chicken, seafood, or meat may be added. Bibimbap ingredients are rich in symbolism. Black or dark colours represent North and the kidneys; red or orange represents South and the heart; green represents East and the liver; White is for the West or the lungs; and yellow represents the centre, or stomach. In Korean households it’s a traditional way of using up day-old rice and leftovers.Try it: Da Rae Jung, Adliya. 46

The history of this small and sweet dessert treat dates back to the 18th century when Catholic monks used leftover egg yolks to make cakes and pastries. The filling is delicious, and now, some prefer the cream slightly “curdled” to give it a rustic appearance. Try it: Tuga, The Lagoon, Amwaj.

Fish & Chips - England Definitely the most famous of all food in England. This great comfort food can be enjoyed as a greasy takeaway, traditionally wrapped in white paper, or in a more upscale environment at restaurants too. We recommend a trip up north to English counties like Lancashire or Yorkshire, where fish and chips is still the go-to dish and mostly enjoyed with a side of mushy peas, and this is also where you’ll find some of the best ‘chippies’ in the country to pick up your own bag of this hearty, hot dish. Here’s a tip – sprinkle loads of salt and malt vinegar all over and tuck in! Try it: Cafe Amsterdam, Adliya.

Biryani - India By far India’s ultimate rice dish! Be it with chicken, lamb, prawns, or vegetables, this is a lavish dish that visitors to India absolutely need to try. It is speculated that the Mughals introduced the modern biryani to India, which is made up of rice, a number of spices and condiments, and your chosen meat and/or vegetables. This is a rather sophisticated and skilled dish to prepare; you can make it pakki, meaning cooked, where the cooked meat and cooked rice are layered, or you can prepare biryani the kacchi way, where raw marinated meat is layered with raw rice before being cooked together. Our favourites include the delicious Hyderabadi biryani and the super spicy Memoni biryani. Try it: Nirvana, Ritz-Carlton Bahrain.

Pad Thai - Thailand

Paella - Spain

Some might consider this nothing more than a regular noodle dish – even its origins come from China, not Thailand. However, the popularisation of the dish is credited to Thai authorities and in particular the late Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who introduced and promoted pad thai in his campaign to establish Thai nationalism and modernise the country. Well, if Thai restaurants and food vendors worldwide are any indication, the campaign definitely worked. Pad Thai is made with chewy, stir-fried rice noodles, vegetables, bean sprouts, peanuts, and egg, among other things like dried shrimp, garlic, shallots, red chilli pepper, and even more unusual ingredients like banana flowers. In Thailand it’s the most commonly served street food, and even in many world cities you’ll find it in a number of Asian neighbourhoods. It’s packed full of flavour and a great option for a fast and filling meal.

A hearty, lavish dish with a real home-cooked dinner feeling, Paella is by far Spain’s most famous food offering. The Spanish rice dish includes different combinations of vegetables and meats or seafood, and is normally seasoned with saffron, but also has other spices depending on the recipe and area in Spain it comes from. That’s all due to the numerous variations and authentic flavours that can be added to this heavy main. Paella was originally farmers’ and farm labourers’ food, cooked by the workers over a wood fire for lunchtime. It was made with rice, plus whatever was to hand around the rice fields and countryside like simple veggies and, occasionally, rabbit or duck, and on special occasions, chicken. Now, one of the most popular paella combos has to be the seafood variety! This is a colourful dish and the fun part is that you have to eat it straight out of the pan. You’ll find Paella in pretty much any area of Spain! Try it: La Vinoteca Barcelona.

Try it: Nu Asia, Seef.

Borscht - Eastern Europe This deep-red soup is a winter warmer in many parts of Eastern Europe including Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and other Slavic countries. It’s a beet soup, and its name is said to derive from the Slavic word for cow parsnip. It can be eaten hot or cold, with some of the servings being clear and light like a broth, whilst others like to eat it thick and substantial. It’s a simple dish with a characteristic rich red colour from the palatable beetroots, that also contains ingredients like kvass, a sour ale made from bread, to counterbalance the sweetness of the beets. Vinegar, lemon juice, or citric acid can be added to achieve a similar effect. Ukrainian borscht is more of a hearty soup of beef and a variety of vegetables along with the beets. Borscht without meat can be made with a stock flavoured with forest mushrooms; this Polish version is served with tiny dumplings, called uszka. Just one of the great dishes to try if you’re visiting Eastern Europe. Try it: Shop the ingredients and find a Borscht recipe online, then get cooking! fact magazine

Sushi - japan Don’t be mistaken though, sushi is still one of those dishes that people either REALLY love, or really don’t like. Sushi looks so simple and pretty, but it is in fact an intricate dish in terms of presentation and knowing which flavours work well together. One thing’s for sure though, sushi is causing a dramatic shift in dining habits the world-over. The nigiri and tuna rolls we eat today are a far cry from the pungent, rice-less, barrelfermented stuff that originated in the 3rd century B.C. Now we have pinwheel-shaped rainbow rolls and sushi masters trading their raw fish skills with culinary connoisseurs. Trying sushi in Japan is a must, but we have to say, this region does sushi and maki rolls, excellently. Try it: Ruka, Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa.

Meat Pie - Australia A trip down under is incomplete until you’ve feasted on one of the country’s biggest foodie favourites – the meat pie. This hand-sized pastry with savoury goodness has been described by many in Australia as the national dish. Containing largely diced or minced meat and gravy, often with onion, mushrooms, or even cheese, the meat pie is heavily associated with Australian sports, in particular, Rugby League and Australian Rules football, as it’s one of the most popular foods to eat whilst watching a game. Traditionally, the meat pie is eaten with a big dollop of tomato ketchup on top or on the side. Try it: Polo Gastro Pub.

Tagine with Couscous Morocco On our last visit to Marrakech, everyday was a foodie adventure and the most appetising dish is definitely the tagine with couscous. Tagine is a historically Berber dish, named after the type of earthenware pot in which it is cooked. The tagine way of cooking is similar to a stew, whereby Moroccan tagine dishes are slow-cooked savory stews, typically made with sliced meat, poultry, or fish together with vegetables or fruit. Though tagine is usually served with bread, it tastes amazing when it comes with a side of couscous. Try it: Dar Al Tajine, Hoora.

Serena

What’s it about:

Set in 1930s North Carolina, we’re in the depression era when the future of George Pemberton’s (Bradley Cooper) timber empire becomes complicated when he marries Serena (Jennifer Lawrence). His go-getting wife is both intelligent and insecure, obsessed with expanding her husband’s brutal logging business and the desire to give him a male heir. Beleaguered with her contradictory personality, George gets more than what he bargained for.

Highlights “ In Serena, the duo lacks that ferocious spark, and whilst expectations are high, the reality of duplicating the same success as their previous hit, is slightly, if not, very, bleak.”

Unfinished Business What’s it about: A hard-working small business owner and his two associates travel to Europe to close the most important deal of their lives. But, this routine business trip soon turns into a sequence of (unplanned) events that could really make or break this deal.

Serena Director: Susanne Bier Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Rhys Ifans, Charity Wakefield Why it’s worth watching? Oscar-winner Susanne Bier’s cinematic offering has been on the shelf for two years now, and though Lawrence delivers a fierce performance (this lady can act!) Serena feels like, how shall we put it, a depression-era Gone Girl (for those of you who’ve seen that global hit, you’ll get what we mean). The plot is melodramatic in epic proportions and, at times, seriously weird; a beautiful blonde captures the heart of a cute, successful guy, only to switch and become the high-maintenance other half of his nightmares. Lawrence’s execution of a luminously beautiful, yet completely contradicting character is what’ll make you watch this ‘til the end. When Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence gave us Silver Linings Playbook, the world was in awe at the two’s onscreen chemistry. In Serena, the duo lacks that ferocious spark, and whilst expectations are high, the reality of duplicating the same success as their previous hit is very bleak. With that said, if you’re into twisted screenplay then this one’s for you.

ALTERNATIVE/ROCK

Coming Up For Air By Kodaline

If the Irish modern rock quartet’s 2013

debut, In A Perfect World, was a festival-puller, then Kodaline’s sophomore offering is a radioready, guitar-led album with slamming choruses and 12 potential future anthems, created for the sole purpose of breathtaking stadium performances. That’s right, for their second album, Kodaline has done something that many musicians don’t, they’ve stuck to the band’s blueprint, bringing us a bigger sound and bold attitude for fans, old and new, to love! Some of our favourite tracks on the album include Honesty, with its soaring chorus and soft-rock nature; the soothing rhythm of The One; the menacing clamour of Human Again; and the jaunty pop sounds of Coming Alive and Love Like This. There’s acoustic subtlety in most tracks including the melodious lullaby of the album closer, Love Will Set You Free. Each track has a backbone and lyrics that endorse Kodaline’s altrock talent and reputation - they no longer need comparing to the likes of Coldplay or Oasis – the Irishmen put forward a mature collection of sway-along tunes and we think Coming Up For Air will well and truly help the foursome make a lasting impression in the music world this year.

Title

By Meghan Trainor Because you know it’s All About That Bass (HOW catchy is that tune?), and a boat-load of sharpwitted lyrics, bubbly hooks, and smart songs, when it comes to the playful sound of Meghan Trainor. This lady was one of the most exciting newcomers of pop in 2014 with her up-tempo beats and straight-up word game. Check out the songs Bang Dem Sticks, My Selfish Heart and Lips Are Movin’ to get a real feel for her musical vibe. There’s the John Legend duet Like I’m Gonna Lose You and the playful fusions of R&B, hip-hop and dancehall on Mr Almost and Walkashame. When she slows it down for What If I, we hear a little of the crooning voice of Etta James – damn, this girl can pretty much sing about anything and make it sound fabulous. She has her own style; she’s lovable and she’s “bringing booty back!” and she’s also reminding you all that “every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top” – what’s not to love? Meghan Trainor ain’t no one-hit wonder. Watch out for this savvy singer, she’s going to be making moves and shaking up the music industry, for sure.

112 countries and one million miles of travel! This memoir is the story of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s inside account of the crises, choices, and challenges she faced during her four years as America’s 67th secretary of state, and how those experiences drive her view of the future. In the aftermath of her 2008 presidential run, she expected to return to representing New York in the United States Senate. To her surprise, her former rival for the Democratic Party nomination, newly elected President Barack Obama, asked her to serve in his administration as Secretary of State. Secretary Clinton and President Obama had to decide how to repair fractured alliances, wind down two wars, and address a global financial crisis.

Be Careful What You Wish For By Jeffrey Archer

Archer being the bestselling author that he is, this book is filled with loads of twists and turns, making sure you don’t put the book down for any reason. Kicking off with a personal tragedy, with Harry Clifton and his wife Emma rushing to the hospital to learn the fate of their son Sebastian, who has been involved in a fatal car accident. Thus begins a tale of ambition, betrayal and vengeance. Since it is the fourth novel of the series, not many details of the plot background and are elaborated. It is highly recommended that you read the first three books of the series before tackling this one. The book ends at a cliff-hanger, with you edgily waiting for more!

ISLAND RIDES

We take a ride into the desert in Toyota’s TRD-spec FJ Cruiser, a dedicated off-roader with everything you need for dominating the dunes… Toyota’s quirky retro lowfrills, high thrills off-roader gets a makeover courtesy of the Japanese automaker’s performance division, TRD (Toyota Racing Development). TRD recently launched its UAE base late last year, and now offers aftermarket parts and TRD-spec versions of Toyota’s passenger car range, the FJ being the most recent addition. For most of the range, the modifications are almost purely cosmetic, with aero kits, alloy wheels, chromed exhausts, and so on. However, 54

fact magazine

the FJ Cruiser’s mods go much more than just skin deep. Sure, there are the cosmetic touches, such as the rather nice-looking black 17-inch alloys, the chromed TRD exhaust, shift-knob and fender flares, which do all add to the overall visual effect. But then there are some serious additions which are dedicated specifically to the fine art of desert driving. For example, there are the special TRD shocks and coil springs that add ground clearance, and underbody

protection in the form of a skid plate and side sill protectors. There’s the compass/inclinometer setup on the dashboard (an inclinometer is that ball floating in liquid that tells you whether you’re upside down or not…). And then there is the built-in air compressor for inflating your tyres after you’ve let them down for desert driving, which is probably the most useful feature of all. Not so useful, but cool anyway, is the TRD flagpole that screws into a mount on the roof, so that people can spot you from a distance when traversing the undulating dunes of the desert! Other standard features on the TRD FJ which add icing to the cake are the navigation system and rear parking camera on the infotainment screen, as well as cruise control. The engine for the TRD FJ remains the same – Toyota’s 4.0l V6, which

ISLAND RIDES

puts out 268hp and 380Nm of torque through the five-speed automatic transmission, which itself can be manually shifted between 2WD, 4-High and 4-Low. Being geared more towards torque than horsepower, the FJ is not the fastest SUV on the road, but the considerable torque will churn through or over most obstacles with little fuss, helped along by the FJ’s relatively lightweight design. There are also such useful driver aids

Other standard features on the TRD FJ which add icing to the cake are the navigation system and rear parking camera on the infotainment screen, as well as cruise control.

as the A-Trac Active Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and differential lock. The TRD FJ suffers from the same complaints as the standard FJ Cruiser, namely a budget-looking plasticky interior, cramped rear seats and unrefined on-road ride comfort. However, for serious 4WD enthusiasts, these issues are secondary to off-road performance, and in that regard, few SUVs offer as much bang for your buck as the TRD FJ. Indeed, most of the parts that come standard are only available as aftermarket or third-party parts on most 4WDs. At around BD15,500, the TRD FJ is pricey compared to the standard FJ Cruiser, but in our opinion, if you like to hit the desert, you won’t be disappointed. fact magazine

Talking 500X With Fiat Last month, we were whisked away to The Shard in London for the launch of the Fiat 500X, where we were treated to a magic show by UK magician Dynamo, and a sit-down with Gianluca Italia, Head of Fiat Brand EMEA, to learn more about their plans… With derivatives like the 500L and 500X, are you developing 500 as a sub-brand of Fiat, and is there more planned? Yes, we are, but for the time being this is it. We are launching the 500L Trekking in the Middle East soon, and the 500X towards the end of the year, but that’s it, because we believe there is a limit to which you can stretch a brand. Who are you targeting with the 500X? The segment crosses many audiences, so in terms of the customers, I don’t think there is a specific age or gender or social position. When it comes to the 500 world, in most cases we talk about upper-mainstream, premium customers. Last weekend we launched the 500X in Italy, and we saw more than 50% of people visiting us coming from different brands, even brands like BMW and Mercedes. Originally, we expected Nissan 56

fact magazine

Juke or MINI Countryman customers, but we were seeing people currently driving models like the 1 Series and A Class as well, which was quite interesting! Why did you choose Dynamo as a brand ambassador? We went through a list of possibilities, and in Dynamo we found a good fit, because he is incredibly well-known amongst young people between 17 and 30 years-old, and this group is more active on the web, they make everything viral very quickly if they like what they see. On top of that, Dynamo is a very credible professional. Behind everything he does is a long study, and we wanted to team up with someone who was serious, and credible, and full of substance, like our car, and I have to say it is working in this case incredibly well. When he posted something on social media linked to Fiat, we

got 1 million views in five hours, so I think the magic show tonight will give us another tremendous boost. Being an SUV, are you expecting the 500X to capture a bigger share of the Middle East market? Yes, very much so, though it’s going to be a niche market share, but we have the opportunity to establish the brand in the proper way. We are not forced to do incredible volumes, we just want to position it among the right audiences and establish ourselves.

T h e U lt i m at e Ad v e n t u r e R i d e In January, eight Bahrainis set off on an epic motorbike journey spanning 4000 kilometres across four countries, bringing a message of friendship and solidarity along the way.

The group, who became known as the Super Adventure Riders, set off on what they called the Ride of Unity, heading first across the wide expanse of Saudi Arabia, before stopping at two refugees camps for those fleeing war-torn Syria in Jordan. There, they distributed clothing and food items, before heading off to Egypt for the final leg of their journey. In Egypt, their trip culminated in a meeting with the Ambassador of Bahrain in Sharm El-Sheikh, where they raised the Bahraini flag to send a message of unity to the world The group rode a combination of BMW R 1200 GS and BMW K1600 GTL adventure bikes, and were provided with technical support by Euro Motors for the journey. We caught up with Sheikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa, chief organiser of the trip and head of the Super Adventure Riders, to find out about their experience. What inspired the journey of the Super Adventure Riders? We embarked upon this incredible journey for two reasons; the first was to show the world how Bahrain supports people who are most in need. We brought this to life through visits to refugee camps in Jordan, in which together with his Royal Highness Prince Hamzah bin Al-Hussein we handed over urgent supplies and aid provided by the Royal Charity Organisation, including winter clothing, tents, shelter and food. We also presented traditional Bahraini halwa sweets to each of the 9,000 students of the Kingdom of Bahrain School, which was one of the refugee camps’ dedicated schools. The second was to bring a message of unity. 58

As a group of eight Bahraini riders from different backgrounds, we came together to ride across 4,000km in the Middle East to show the world that we are united in Bahrain. Our ride culminated in reaching His Majesty King Hamed Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Road in Sharm Al Sheikh where we lifted the Bahraini flag together. How much preparation was involved for the trip? We wanted to make this trip about the rider and his motorcycle, so we did not take much with us other than what we could keep in our bikes and the one pick-up truck that also had the extra motorcycle. What needed the most preparation was all the activities we had planned along the way, from visiting the refugee camps to meeting the Ambassador of Bahrain in Egypt. With all the meetings we had we needed to keep to a tight schedule meaning any delays had to be made up on the road.

“ What needed the most preparation was all the activities we had planned along the way, from visiting the refugee camps to meeting the Ambassador of Bahrain in Egypt.”

Can you tell us a bit about your fellow riders? How did the team come together, and how did you get on during the journey? The team and I were planning this trip for more than eight months. We knew that there were going to be some points that we will face tension. We all decided to always communicate and make sure we are all united. The team is the best that I have ever travelled and worked with. We all worked together and came through it a stronger team. Why did you choose the BMWs, and how did they fare? “To have been able to show our passion and love for our country made it a very happy moment and one that I will never forget.”

What was the hardest moment of the trip for you? The hardest moment would have to be when we got to Jordan, only to realise storm Huda had hit the country badly, we were faced with snow and black ice on the roads and temperatures reaching -2 C, it pushed us to the limits, but we made it to our destinations on the scheduled times.

machine with the terrain we had to overcome. The motorcycle has two riding modes, Rain and Road, which helped to tackle the various conditions we came across. A tank volume of 30 litres helped us to not have too many breaks along the way, and the on-board computer helped us to have perfect navigation and other information such as speed and fuel level. The other choice was the BMW K1600 GTL, a true touring bike. It is designed for trips like ours in mind, with the handlebars reaching far back, which allows to have a relaxed seating position which is highly recommended for a 4,000km journey!

What was the happiest? There were a number of moments that made us happy. The two moments that stand out the most for me was when we met with the kids from the refugee camps and seeing the hope and strength they had. To be able to give them some support in such a difficult time made the trip worthwhile. The next highlight of our trip must be when we finally reached His Majesty King Hamed Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Road in Sharm Al Sheikh, where we came together as a group of Bahraini riders to lift our flag – it was a once in a lifetime experience. To have been able to show our passion and love for our country made it a very happy moment and one that I will never forget. Overall, how would you summarise the experience? It is best described as a life changing experience, traveling the long distances with my fellow riders and touching many peoples lives along the way, we feel like we have made a difference and achieved our goals of unity and charity. With the help of sponsors like Euro Motors, we are sure to continue our cause and look to doing another adventure to continue spreading our message, and helping as many people as we can. fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

“I love plating the dish, and I experiment a lot with it. The presentation of each dish differs every time. The customer needs to look at the dish and say wow, then taste it and say perfect!” - Chef Karine

W

e as a team love Le Chocolat, so we were very excited for the lovely meal we were about to eat. Chef Karine greeted us with a beautiful smile, excited to share her passion for food and cook for us. “Are you ready,” she asks? Of course Chef, we’re always ready for good food. Born and raised in the stunning island of Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia, Chef Karine had an interest in cooking since childhood. “Both my parents are chefs and I have grown up in an environment of that sort, where cooking comes naturally,” she explains. She was particularly fond of preparing desserts, and soon took her step into the culinary world as a Pastry Chef. She did a Professional Elementary Diploma for two years at Hospitality School of Tahiti in French Polynesia. “My first job was in my hometown and I had the pleasure to work with Chef Serge Halbardier, who is my mentor,” she recalls. “I worked under him for one and a half years, after which he retired and I took over as the Pastry Chef. There was no looking back after that. As we spoke our appetiser was plated and brought to the table. It’s the healthy quinoa and mix leaves salad with balsamic and sun dried tomato dressing, along with radish, carrot, cauliflower and asparagus. This veggis treat was fresh, crunchy and packed with textures that we relished with every mouthful. This was just the beginning, however, as next came the roasted beetroot napoleon. A huge beetroot fan, this dish

came was a pleasant surprise; oven roasted beetroot layered between herbed goat and ricotta cheese, dressed with fresh thyme and lemon zest, along with arugula salad, red onion and sweet peppered vinaigrette. The taste of the peppered vinegar really topped of the zingy flavour, beautifully. We could tell that Chef Karine really has a skill for knowing which flavours work well together. Chef Karine revealed her favourite part in her cooking process: “I love plating the dish, and I experiment a lot with it. The presentation of each dish differs every time. The customer needs to look at the dish and say wow, then taste it and say perfect!” she explains. Our main course dishes were served together; charboiled lamb chops, and baked Norwegian salmon steak. Digging into the roasted hazelnut lamb chops we loved the crunchiness on top with the tender coated meat. With oriental bulgar extra virgin olive oil, fried cherry tomatoes and creamy garlic sauce, this was truly an amazing dish. The baked Norwegian salmon steak, with baby potatoes and asparagus, accompanied by a delicate blend of gingered red beetroot sauce, really was a standout choice. The

salmon was cooked to perfection and we welcomed the succulent flavours of this tasty dish. Our bellies were full, yet we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to savour a sweet treat. And so, out came dessert. Chef Karine served us rangeena, a traditional bahraini sweet made with dates and a selection of homemade italian gelato, plated with roasted banana and chocolate waffle. We loved the desserts and the lovely conversation we had with Chef Karine. We walked out of Le Chocolat with big smiles, happy to have discovered this fabulous menu and the woman behind it! We’ll be back for another round of food very soon. GO: Le Chocolat is located in the Diplomatic Area, call 1753 0666 for more information. fact magazine

the dishes quickly pulls us into the buffet area, and we spend ample time browsing all the different dishes on offer. There’s an extensive sushi station, salad selection, hot and cold mezzeh, a live tempura station, and a delightful dessert area made up of fresh fruits and other sweet treats. The entire restaurant had a mix of artdeco style interiors, with trendy tables and chairs, funky lighting fixtures, and striking wall art. The restaurantis spacious and the mainly white walls add brightness to the venue’s two seating areas. This interior style usually includes delicate geometric elements with contrast colours and elegant materials, and IL Giardino is a perfect example of this look; stylish yet subtle. Without wasting too much time, we headed to the buffet and filled up our plates with appetising starters. Of course, our first stop was the Sushi station, and trying a piece of each different sushi was our strategy here. The california maki, the shrimp, the crabstick, the avacado and the tuna-filled sushi were absolutely delicious, so much so that we went for a second round. A hot plate of freshly prepared tempura was served on our table; the assortment included

shrimp, hammour finger, calamari ring, eggplant, mixed peppers and onion rings – these were all finger licking good. The standout at the salad bar was the tuna salad! We were excited to taste the famous Seafood Jambalaya Rice; a mixed seafood and rice combo, with heavy flavours, this one is an absolute must-try. Next was a marathon tasting of all the hot dishes; the hammour harra sauce, beef terriyaki with mushroom, roasted potato, chicken with pineapple and mixed seafood with saffron puree blanc. Every dish has its own tasty component, and we’re happily full. Finally, after a little respite, we headed for the desserts; which included the chocolate mousse, the yummy tiramisu, healthy fresh fruits, and the ultimate fave – Umm ali, and an assortment of pastries. A cup of green tea with mint was the perfect way to end our meal. On the whole the seafood and sushi night experience at IL Giardino, Elite Seef Residence was a pleasant one. B

MMI Group’s Café Amsterdam and La Vinoteca Barcelona have become two of the coolest dining venues in Bahrain, and now the two restaurants have put together a combined Saturday Brunch where diners can enjoy the best of both. We opted for the outdoors seating; linking the two outlets, especially because now is the time to enjoy the beautiful weather. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive, and we’re greeted with warm smiles. The chefs and waiters were walking around to continuously check the food stations and that every table was well catered for. Good service makes for a very comfortable brunch experience! The brunch comprises of Brunch a-lacarte, which will be served on the table and stations across the two outlets. This includes a meat corner, serving chicken, spicy beef, lamb and chorizo sausages, as well as sirloin

steak; there’s a cheese and chocolate fondue station, paella stall, breads and pastries, an extensive salad bar and an exceptionally yummy dessert station.

Our Recommendations Our waiter brought us the ‘On the Table’ menu, which consisted of some rather delectable dishes. There were two sides to choose from; Café Amsterdam‘s menu offers ‘Breakfast’ which includes the Viennoiserie (pastries),specialties and of course the various egg dishes. We began with the Danish rolls and the Brioche with Nutella; a scrumptious start! It’s breakfast time and pancakes are an absolute must! The pancakes with vanilla ice-cream and sweet maple syrup were lip-smacking; fluffy and yummy. The French toast follows; crisp on the outside and soft in the middle, plated with fresh fruits, this is another winning menu item.

Foodie Corner

For the Poached eggs, we had a choice of three; Classic Benedict, Florentine and Arlington. We tried the Arlington; divine smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce on a toasted muffin, it was amazing! Very tempted to try the other two, we decided against it as the mouth-watering Tapas Menu of La Vinoteca drew us in. Beginning with the Manchego Cheese Lollipops – cheesy and crunchy. Then came the boneless chicken wings, veal meatballs with mash potato, and chicken croquettes – each being a palate-pleasing choice. The Spanish

Omelette was packed with flavour, just like you’d expect to eat in Spain for a traditional brekkie. Another mouthwatering choice was the tender wagyu beef cheeks with wild mushrooms – the textures and earthy flavours of this dish had everyone at the table smiling. Next, we took a little trip to the meat station and picked up one of each sausage and the sirloin steak, cooked to our desired preference. We also picked up a plate of seafood paella, the famous Spanish main – it was delightful. A cheese platter followed, with chunks of blue cheese, manchego, sancho el fuerte and flor de guadamur, with a basket of assorted breads and some yummy jam. The best was yet to come; the desserts! We were stunned by the choice of desserts; from pastries to tiramisu, various colourful fruits and mousse, the station had it all. For us, the standouts included the sticky toffee pudding, tiramisu, mango mousse, chocolate

cake, and of course the chocolate fondue, that arrived on the table with strawberries and marshmallows. What a fantastic experience we had at the Saturday Brunch! We highly recommend it to friends, families, colleagues and anyone who wants to make the most of this warm weather. The food is spectacular, the setting fabulous (you’ll feel like you’ve been transported out of Bahrain and straight to Europe), and the service is impeccable. Not to mention, a Spanish guitar duo will serenade you with soothing sounds later in the afternoon. What’s not to love?

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Healing the Senses at SPA InterContinental Take a moment to recharge and relax at SPA InterContinental, where it’s treatment galore on a specially tailored menu. FACT’s Pallavi Ramesh experienced the spa’s brand new remedy; the Senses Candle Massage...

A

fter a hectic month, a relaxing massage is a big YES! So I decided to drop by SPA InterContinental to unwind and rejuvenate from head to toe. Spa InterContinental is a destination spa located on the tenth floor of InterContinental Regency Bahrain. With a cosy atmosphere and friendly staff, this place really has a homely feel. After having a brief talk with my therapist about my skin type and skin regime, I was ushered to the treatment room by the Spa Manager. All set for my pamper session, I was looking forward to trying the Senses Candle Massage, which not only sounded unique, but also, turned out to be one of the most amazing massages I’ve ever had. The Senses Candle Massage includes 100 per cent natural essential oil, and unlike other conventional candles, these ones do not contain paraffin. They are formulated with Soy and Coconut Oil which provides a lower melting point. When this candle reaches a favourable temperature, the wax turns into silky oil, which is perfect to use for a massage because of its warmth – it’s not too hot, rather very comforting. After the massage, you’ll have reached the ultimate point of relaxation, while the skin is left soft, moisturised and lightly perfumed.

Bruno Vassari’s

Senses Candle Massage (45 minutes)

The therapist lit the candle before the exfoliation process, to have the massage oil reach an adequate temperature, but also to make sure that enough oil was produced to use for the treatment. With the climate change, my skin was typically winter dry, so the oil used for my massage was Tahiti Monoi, an exotic maceration of the Tiaré Flower in Pure Coconut Oil. After the exfoliation, the therapist gently poured the candle oil onto my skin and began the full body massage. The oil is perfect for dry skin because of its high concentration in moisturising, and nutritive and soothing qualities. I could feel the suppleness of the skin pushing through as my therapist used various massage techniques to ease muscle tension and help me to relax. The oil makes the skin more flexible, and this means it can retain moisture and stay hydrated for longer. 92

fact magazine

HEALTH & WELLNESS

The other available candle oil is the Jasmine essential, which has antiseptic and stimulant properties, providing muscle relaxation. There’s also the Fleur D’Ambre oil, which has great moisturising and nourishing benefits. Therefore, depending on your skin type, the perfect oil will be selected for your massage. The treatment on the whole was therapeutic and I felt completely refreshed by the end. In fact, I wish it had lasted a little longer so that I wouldn’t have to get up from the peaceful nap I fell into! Alas, the the soothing massage was over. I highly recommend the Senses Candle Massage treatment for its intricate and effective method and techniques, used during a simple oil massage, to make a world of difference to your body and overall wellness.

PEP TALK

Celebrating Female Entrepreneurs If you’re wondering what the word on the street is, the country’s own Blonde in Bahrain, Georgina Jennsen, has her finger on the pulse. This month she’s discussing creative women and business minds…

Beauty Fix: Do’s & Dont’s

Making the right product choice and knowing the correct techniques while applying makeup can make you look your best. Here are Reshu Malhotra’s do’s and dont’s…

DO: USE A MAKEUP BRUSH TO APPLY YOUR FOUNDATION

Georgina Jennsen Georgina Jennsen is the blogger behind the popular lifestyle blog, Blonde in Bahrain. Georgina loves all things beautiful and luxurious. If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that the entrepreneurial spirit amongst women in Bahrain is alive and kicking. In many ways, we have social media to thank for this. Platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have encouraged the breaking down of boring old barriers that had previously stopped us from being exactly who we wanted to be; strong, successful, and supportive of our sisters. I’ve learned a million things about entrepreneurship since starting my blog in 2012, and one of them is this. Building a positive online presence is a great way to make the most of the entrepreneurial opportunities out there. It’s superfun and mostly free, and you can’t ask for more than that now, can you? Developing my own personal brand has allowed me to meet and collaborate with some wonderfully talented and interesting people. I get a real kick out of communicating and building community. So finally, a little advice for all you lovely ladies looking to widen your world through the web. Find something you love, work out the best way to share it, and then just jump right in, heels and all! 94

fact magazine

Use a foundation brush to apply foundation as it not only applies the right amount of product to your face but it allows you to properly buff it out leaving an even coverage on your skin.

DO: FILL IN THE EYEBROWS

A fuller eyebrow is always more appealing for the complexion and many of us need a little help in the volume department. Don’t apply too much filler, use an easy hand and choose a shade that is slightly lighter than your natural hair colour.

DO: USE MASCARA

Mascara has an undeniable affect that enhances and elongates lashes. It allows your eyes to look bigger and more awake. My favourite Mascara is Lancome Hypnose.

DON’T: NOT MATCHING THE LIP LINER WITH LIPSTICK This is the most common makeup mistake. Make sure you choose lip liner that is the same shade as your lipstick and it should be blended well. For best results use a lipstick brush.

DON’T: WEAR THE WRONG FOUNDATION SHADE

Foundation is supposed to create a perfect smooth complexion and cover-up any imperfections. This is why you should always use a foundation, which blends in with your skin and is a shade closest to your complexion and no lighter.

DON’T: APPLYING MAKEUP ON DRY AND FLAKY SKIN

Applying makeup on the dry skin will only enhance the dry flakes and fine lines. It is very important to prep the skin by using the right primer and a moisturiser before applying the makeup. Keep up with Reshu, a UAE- based make up artist and beauty blogger on www.reshumalhotra.com

PEP TALK

The Power Inside

Bad Diets Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…

Christal Dennis is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...

So a few of my clients have had me rolling my eyes lately with regards to their eating habits; regardless of what I say it’s always “my friend’s aunt’s, sister’s cousin’s friend is doing this or that diet and they lost bla bla amount of weight.” Every trainer out there will tell you diets don’t work which is why the diet industry makes billions each year as they know people will jump from diet to diet once they’ve finished their four week or six week programme, and see the weight they have just lost come back (plus some more). This is because doing these awful diets you learn nothing about good nutrition and a balanced diet. What some people seem to forget is “Food is fuel”. It’s not about being hungry and feeling deprived it’s about nourishing your body with real whole foods so that you are consistently satisfied and energised to workout properly and live life to the fullest. You wouldn’t starve your car of fuel and expect it to run efficiently would you? You need to build a good

In honour of women having their own businesses and owning their own personal power I would like to reintroduce to you a side that has always been there but one that many of us tend to forget about. Do you remember when you were a child? When life felt magical and you were playful. Didn’t it sometimes feel like you could do absolutely anything? Maybe then you said to yourself if I was bigger and had more resources I could do so many things. Now as an adult you may have all the resources, you’re bigger but that feeling of I can do anything may have disappeared. Some of us may feel powerless and some may feel empty inside with no idea of how we got to this point. My suggestion is that all you need is right inside you and perfectly accessible. You can feel alive again and you can start to have that sense of whether you are on the right path or not. Women are more naturally intuitive and although, often, our femininity is perceived as something that holds us back, our ability to

relationship with food and make each of your meals taste amazing but still be healthy, that way you’ll still be full and satisfied and not crave anything more. Remember there is a reason that every year a new diet centre opens or a new weight loss book comes out; the ones that came before didn’t work but all promised that they would! access our intuition can give us a head start in so many ways. Although I’m specifically speaking to women, this is something men can do too. We all have that little child we used to be inside of us. We think that because we’ve grown up we need to forget about that child. What we actually need to do is speak to that child every day and start to take care of it and protect it. This is what will wake us up to our inner power and joy. To find out more have a look at www. innerbonding.com. Here’s to the success of women in Bahrain!

Mohammed Fakhro Chairman for SunCity Ventures & Director of Fakhro Group

Tell us more about the market share in Bahrain for Sun City Ventures’ dining outlets and any growth plans for 2015... Bahrain is an expanding market and Bahrainis are very adventurous with their food. The food business is still at a nascent stage here and there is tremendous scope for many more brands. We currently operate Zayt Zaytoon , Gloria Jean’s , The Yellow Chilli, Vapiano and Fakhro Catering. We have had a growing market share each year. 2015 has begun with a bang for us and we have a very aggressive expansion plan in place not only for our existing brands but also for new brands that we are looking at bringing into the fold in Bahrain and the GCC. 98

Recommend your three favourite dining venues to try in Bahrain and why...

What are your personal and professional goals for the year ahead?

Different cuisines are best treated at different restaurants. Also it’s not just the food but also the service and ambience that make it a wholesome magical experience for a guest. For Indian food I love The Yellow Chilli, for Italian I strongly recommend Vapiano and for Lebanese you must try Zayt Zaytoon. Not because they are SunCity restaurants but because they are committed to quality and authenticity and we make sure we never let our customers down. All brands we operate are best in class and cater to varied tastes.

In today’s demanding life my personal goal is to be able to spend some quality time with my family. Work and business tend to encroach into our much valued personal space but I always encourage my employees to take time out too. A balanced life is always a productive life. Professionally, I would want to work on my employees. I strongly believe that a quality work force directly impacts the efficiencies and morale of the organisation. Talent building and augmentation will be our motto this year. We intend to continually grow and invest in our business but more importantly to invest in our people!
