THE EDITOR
Life in the Fast Lane... “ You never really know how quick you are before you reach F1.” – Jean Alesi
T
alking of all things fast, we’re back round to the event of the year – the 2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix – and it’s set to be an immense weekend. If you want to be in the know about everything that’s happening, FACT has your Formula 1 fix with the hottest afterparties, concerts and entertainment offerings from April 1st to 3rd. Let me start by giving a huge shout-out to the main organiser, Bahrain International Circuit, and sponsor, Gulf Air – for, yet again, bringing some of the world’s biggest music stars to Bahrain for the F1 weekend. Personally, I’m excited to see Avicii take to the stage. Turn to p37 and check out the full line up. It’s party galore for F1 fans this year, as venues all over town are hosting some of the biggest bashes for the race weekend. We tell you about just some of these awesome events from p44 onwards. Staying on the F1 theme, more specifically cars, my favourite feature this month is the arts interview with local sketch artist Hamad Bin Daina (p57). He hand draws every kind of car that you can think of, and he even drew this month’s incredible front cover for us, with a little touch of Bahrain, of course. His amazing talent is sure to get you into the F1 spirit! Before we reach F1 weekend, Bahrain is set to get an artistic boost with the annual Spring of Culture festival. Entertainers from all over the world, as well as regional and local talents, will be putting on lectures, exhibitions, live performances, and so much more over the 2016 spring season. Turn to p25 and start noting down all the events you want to attend this month. On the topic of spring, this month also welcomes the fashion change over to SS16 and we’ve got a BIG trend report starting p99, which is sure to inject some style into your wardrobes this season. It’s already starting to get a little warmer out there, so this month might just be the last of the real al fresco wining, dining, and enjoying the outdoors – make the most of it! ☺

The 2016 F1
Championship Season As the most accurate signals of what’s to come, all eyes were on the results of the recent F1 test sessions in Barcelona, and it would seem it’s the news we’ve all been waiting for!
Even the most ardent of F1 fans will grudgingly admit that the 2015 season was pretty boring by most standards. While there were some decent midpack battles, and the occasional upset from Ferrari, it was really just a case of seeing which Silver Arrows car would cross the line first. Once Hamilton had secured the Championship in the USA with three races to go, it got even less interesting, as Rosberg was seemingly handed the last three races by the team to romp home taking the total Mercedes victory tally to 16 of 19 races. Promising results coming from Barcelona indicate that things might not be quite so easy for Mercedes this year. Though Lewis Hamilton racked up an incredible 157 laps on the first day of testing, demonstrating that the Mercedes powerplant is still impressively dependable, it was Vettel who topped the lap times by over half a second for Ferrari. Red Bull seem to be back in business too, as Daniel Ricciardo clocked the third fastest time of the day, which will be a relief to the team after their dramas looking for a new 52

engine during the off season. They complained bitterly about being given no choice but a Renault engine, but the powerplant seems to have improved. Talking of Renault, the Renault F1 works team returns to the sport for 2016, and will be bringing considerable
experience with them, as these guys won the championship twice with Alonso back in the 2005-06 seasons. Driving for Renault are Kevin Magnussen and rookie Jolyon Palmer, who will both be looking to make their mark with the prestigious outfit. ➻

McLaren-Honda fans will be rejoicing in the fact that things are looking up for those guys too. On the first day of testing the team racked up a decent 84 laps, and a lap time only 1.8 seconds behind Vettel’s, meaning that both the pace and reliability of the 54
fact magazine
Honda engine seem to have drastically improved. An exciting new prospect comes in the form of Haas F1, an American team headed up by NASCAR boss Gene Haas. Haas F1 have secured the considerable talents of Romain
Grosjean, alongside the dependable skills of Esteban Gutierrez for the season, as well as purchasing as many customer parts as the rules allow from Ferrari for their F1 car. So we can expect, if not, spectacular results, at least some decent challenges from the new team. Determined and well-backed new teams, hungry young drivers, more pace and reliability from the Honda and Renault engines, and Ferrari back to its rapid old ways all point to a challenging season for the reigning champions, Mercedes F1! Here’s to a more exciting 2016 Formula One Championship. ✤ GO: The 2016 Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix takes place from April 1 to 3. Visit www.bahraingp.com for more information.

fact magazine
As the 2016 Formula 1 bahrain Grand Prix is set to take place on the first weekend in April, we thought it only fitting to find an artist that embodies a unique love for cars in their work. Lo and behold, after some hashtagging and searching on social media, 33-year-old Hamad Bin Daina aka @bh_vision came onto our radar. From BMW to Maserati, Mercedes, Jeep, Porsche and every other car make and model you can think of - this guy has sketched and drawn it all - and the end result is nothing short of amazing. Hamad is completely self-taught and began with sketching cartoons, caricatures and all types of animation. But something changed. He became aware that when it came to drawing, his hand to paper pressure was quite heavy, and so he chose to start drawing cars. “I decided to choose what I thought would be, for me, the hardest thing to draw,” Hamad says. “Especially sports cars, they’re very difficult to draw, but I taught myself to recognise the lines and the different angles and reflections, and
now my drawings are done in my own unique way.” The first car he drew was the Ferrari F50 – aged 18. He has somewhat of a deep appreciation for Italian cars. “I love the shape and the way they are designed,” he adds. Something we found to be really fascinating is that, unlike traditional motoring enthusiasts, Hamad’s interest in cars is sparked purely from a visual point of view. “I’m into the body of the car and the way it looks, more than the way it drives and the internal aspects like the engine,” he explains. “I just like looking at them, I’m very drawn to how attractive a car can be. His dedication to his art form is constantly present in every part of life, especially when he’s out driving. “Sometimes I’ll see a car on the road and I’ll forget about everything else,” Hamad tells us. “I’ll have to stop and study the lines of the car so that I can start imagining how it will come to form on paper.” ➻

For Hamad, drawing relaxes his mind. He can spend up to four hours a day sketching, especially if it’s a detailed piece. When it comes to tools and technique, he’s very sure of the type of pens and pencils to use. “The most important thing with my drawings is to choose the thinnest of pens and pencils,” he says. “I do my drawings on A4 so the tools have to fit in with that. For example I use a .3 pencil and as I get deeper into the details, I’ll use .03.” Hamad puts a quirky spin on some of his drawings, giving the car a character and bringing it to life. “If I’m only drawing “reality” cars, people can get bored of those drawings quickly,” he says. “So, I developed a unique style of sketch, incorporating my Arabic culture and background. I take the image of a gutra and the Arabic eyes and apply them into my drawings.” ➻

In bringing cultural aspects into his drawings, Hamad makes his work original, catchy and definitely his own. It’s certainly very different from anything we’ve seen before! The father-of-two talks about his artistry with great enthusiasm, and he takes it seriously. Before starting a drawing, he’ll spend an ample amount of time researching different angles, the best reflections, and all the little details about any one car. “For me, to start a drawing without research is the wrong step,” he says. “Imagine if you draw something from any angle just because you love the look of the car and it comes out very dark or the reflections are not correct – how are you going to fix this afterwards? That’s why I research and look at as many pictures of the car beforehand. “Sometimes, I can spend hours looking through magazines and searching on Google about the shape and the design, and the history of the car,” he says. ➻ 62

"My advice to anyone who likes drawing and sketching is just to really take your time. Forget about social media and don't just hurry to put your signature on anything. The McLaren P1 has been one of the most difficult cars to draw for Hamad. But, the one that really took some serious pen to paper action was the 1989 Batmobile. Hamad explains: “It’s like a very big fan at the front and then the bat wings. There were so many angles and lines to study – it was very difficult,” he recalls. And what’s his favourite car to draw? “I love all of my art,” he says. “There are thousands of cars out there and I get to pick any one I want to draw – this is really exciting for me. There is, however, a car that’s very special to me. From the beginning, it’s very close to my heart – the dodge viper. I really really love this car, especially the lines and the colours. I spent around five days drawing it.”

Due to his demanding day job, Hamad’s biggest challenge is finding the time to create more drawings and take the next step towards things like exhibitions and art fairs, though he did take part in a local exhibition as part of Visionaries in Bahrain, where some of his drawings sold to VIP visitors and the social elite. So, what keeps Hamad hooked? “The good thing is that you’re challenging yourself, and whenever you post your work on social media, many people from around the world can see it, like it, comment on it, and appreciate it,” he says. Hamad clearly has a deep and personal connection with his drawings, and more so with the practice and concept of hand sketching – a rare quality in this modern day of technology. He draws and sketches for himself, because he enjoys it. “Each artist has their own way, it’s like their fingerprint,” he says. “And drawing cars, this way, is definitely mine.” ✤ GO: Hamad is available for freelancing and special projects. Big Screen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice What’s it about: We’re in Metropolis and the battle of the heroes is on as Batman takes on Superman, fearing that some actions are going unchecked. Whilst they’re busy fighting, Lex Luthor creates a new threat – Doomsday – and the two heroes are forced to work together to save the city.
Director: Zack Snyder cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams Why it’s worth watching? This film, or more so the concept, has been a long time coming. The project was first announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2013, and it has since been developed by a mega-talented team. You’ve got Man of Steel director, Zack Snyder at the helm and with the help of The Dark Knight and Argo screenwriters – David Goyer and Chris Terrio, respectively – it’s no wonder that Warner is nervous about the $400 million plus spend on the film. And we haven’t even got to the cast list yet. Money aside, the plot pits DC Comics’ three biggest heroes against each other, and the story is expected to lay groundwork for multiple DC films, including a Justice League movie. For us, if it lives up to the high standard of any DC Comics’ TV shows (hello, Arrow and The Flash fans) then Warner will be laughing all the way to the bank. If not, we’ll probably just like it for the beautiful cast parading in superhero outfits.

The Brothers Grimsby What’s it about: Two brothers are adopted by different families when they’re young – one turns out to be MI6’s greatest spy, whilst the other is a football frenzy doofus with nine children. When they’re reunited after 28 years, the super serious secret spy is forced to work with the soccerloving simpleton on a dangerous plot.

T.L.O.P THE LIFE OF PABLO

By Kanye West
Even though it was pulled from being released on Apple Music, it’s SO worth getting your hands on Yeezy’s new record. Whether you love him, hate him, think he’s a little eccentric, or that he’s the biggest celebrity snob (let’s be honest, Kanye is his own worst enemy at times) it’s undeniable that this college dropout makes good music. His previous albums, Yeezus, gave this one plenty to live up to. Thankfully, T.L.O.P aka The Life of Pablo is a solid follow-up; Wolves is a bass-filled, chilled-out track featuring vocals from Sia and Vic Mensa, whereas Fade is a complete 180 - upbeat and much more punchy. No More Parties in LA is a favourite from the album, taking us back to Yeezy’s original sound and showcasing his lyricism, perfectly. After much hype, and a Twitter spat with Wiz Khalifa (we have an inkling it was a publicity stunt), we’re happy to say that this album was entirely worth the long, long wait.
After the disappearance of his brother during a filming expedition near Mount Everest, Charles Whittington takes a dangerous and illegal journey from India to Tibet in the hope of finding his sibling. Along the way he encounters a woman with a deadly secret which sees the novel take a thrilling turn. The Rose of Tibet is Lionel Davidson’s second novel, although you would never believe it; he writes with the experience of a seasoned novelist, yet keeps the flare and excitement that comes with a junior such as himself. This has to be one of the best thrillers we’ve encountered this year!
After a slightly confusing Twitter post last year instigating that the band was about to part ways (thankfully a huge misunderstanding!) The 1975 is back with a new album and a new sound. Yes, it’s the longest album name ever, and the music is just as catchy. Love Me and UGH! are firmly pop records, rather than the heavy guitar sounds that we were used to from the previous album, and has plenty of psychedelic elements throughout. Although, The Sound had us pining

If the name Shay Butler rings a bell, it’s probably because you’ve come across it on YouTube. By 30, Shay weighed 300lbs and decided to get in shape and document his 100lb weight loss on YouTube. In this book, he tackles the debate of whether a parent’s weight issue is mirrored in their children by documenting a 30-day weight-loss and fitness regime taken on by both him and his eldest son in order to maintain his new weight and help improve his son’s health. Both funny and compelling, this account shows it’s never too late to change your eating habits.
taking us right back to The 1975 we know and love. With their new sound, this might be their make or break album, and although we’re fans, we have to say that we can’t help but wish they’d injected a little more of their original style back into their new work.

Paradise Perfect Scenic, stunning, otherworldly, magical, breathtaking and amazing are words not strong enough to describe the Seychelles. ifferent sources give you different answers when you search for how many countries there are on planet earth – but there are 197 independent nations – and as far as bucket lists go, the Seychelles should definitely make your top 10 destinations to visit before you die. Etihad Airways and Seychelles Tourism Board joined forces and took hospitality to a whole new level when FACT magazine accepted their generous offer to traipse the luscious islands. Admittedly we thought the Seychelles was purely a honeymoon destination where all there is to do is sunbathe, drink colourful cocktails, sunbathe some more and enjoy sprawling sunsets with your love. That may be so, but there’s so much more to the Seychelles than the postcard stereotype. Over the years the growing number of hotel resorts alongside the influx of tourism has put the Indian Ocean jewel at the heart of the international travel map. Travellers from all walks of life – lovers, soul-searchers, botanists and families come to this enchanting destination. We are positive that one of the 116 coral and granite islands will bring you a sense of peace and calm to your soul – that or the beauty will just blow your socks off. Situated in the western Indian Ocean near the equator, the climate in the archipelago is delightfully tropical; the perfect combination of sun and rain that will not leave you too bored of either. You’ll find that June, July, and August have the least amount of rain and is therefore the best time to visit – especially, for a relaxing retreat after a school year, with the family. Yet, with temperatures ranging between 27 and 33 degrees Celsius, the Seychelles is never out of season. We took to the main island of Mahé - defined by its whitesand beaches and lush green nature. Victoria, the capital, is the epicenter of all that’s lively and touristy. The elegant replica of London’s Big Ben clock makes the heart of the city a must see. From there, walking down the busy streets of Victoria is a pleasure, as long as you carry your trusted umbrella - provided by your hotel. There are plenty of shops and kiosks to choose from, but if I had to pin down the best, the busy market of Sir Selwyn-Clarke is ideal for a good bargain. ➻

Tropical fruits, exotic vegetables, and lots of fresh fish are sold side by side with a local variety of spices such as cinnamon, bay-leafs, nutmeg, vanilla, and their famous homemade curry sauce. From beachwear to handmade accessories and souvenirs, everything is inspired by the azure waters and tropical treasures. There’s a plethora of items to choose from: corals, shark tooth necklaces, coconut shell bracelets, coconut oil, soap, magnets and key chains, there are so many beautiful souvenirs to gift your family and friends. We were eager to see Le Coco Do Mer, the eroticallyshaped fruit that represents the country’s trademark forbidden fruit. It once grew only on two tiny isles and is now protected by the government. It’s fairly expensive and to take one back home, you require an export license. And when in the Seychelles, a fishing trip is in order. It’s super easy to arrange – either independently or through your hotel, it’s absolutely worth it – and OH EM GEE the taste of that fresh catch grilled on the shores of the nearby island is just heavenly. Be sure that your local companion knows his way around the spices! If you get the chance to visit Eden Island, the only man-made island in the country, you must try dining in one of its luxury restaurants. Foodies and the culinary curious, like us, will not be disappointed. Surprisingly we found the Seychelles’ curry to be very different from the Indian and Thai variety. The octopus curry is a traditional dish that you may want to try; but if you are not up to the challenge, you may want to ask the chef to go easy on the chili! But no worries, there’s always a hot mix of grill items for you to try if the aforementioned doesn’t work out. Whatever your reason for visiting the Seychelles – you’ve just got hitched, you want a mini break from city life, you want to top that tan, you want to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature or you want to indulge in a gastronomic journey of spice and more spice – there’s so much to love here. Not to mention, there’s heaps of luxury to be found everywhere you go – namely in those relaxing massages where you lie in wafts of lemongrass and ginger essences or when you sit under a full moon with a passion fruit cocktail in your hand. Perfection? We think so! That’s why we urge you to tick the Seychelles off your list. While we were lapping it up in the Seychelles we got to stay in two luxury resorts, lucky us. ➻ fact magazine

The McLaren 650S was one of the most exquisite supercars we’ve ever had the pleasure of driving. We were therefore worried that the 570S might pale in comparison. We needn’t have been concerned…

O
ne of the latest additions to the McLaren line-up, the McLaren 570S falls into the company’s entry-level Sports Series, alongside the 540C. This is below the Super Series, boasting the 650S and 675LT, and the Ultimate Series consisting solely of the mighty P1. Now, when we say ‘entry-level’, don’t take that to mean ‘cheap’ or ‘boring’. The biggest mistake you could make when looking at this car is to consider it a ‘baby McLaren’. We’re still talking about a BD75,000 vehicle here, with a mighty 3.8l twin-turbo V8 with 570PS (562hp) and 600Nm torque. You’re also looking at a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds (only 0.2 slower than the 650S), a 0-200km/h time of 9.5 seconds, and a top speed of 328km/h. These figures put the 570S on a par with the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan, the Porsche
ISLAND RIDES
911 Turbo S or the Audi R8 V10. So as you can see, a ‘baby’ it is not… So what does one do when one is handed the keys to a McLaren in the UAE? Well, one takes a drive up one of the world’s best new roads, doesn’t one? So, off to Jebel Jais it was, and a glorious twisting mountain road that snakes its way up towards the country’s highest point on a rainy, misty day that lent some sense of drama to the occasion. Though a little more concentration was needed on the slightly damp road, in the 570S it felt truly enjoyable, and not at all scary. It doesn’t have the furious, blistering speed of the 650S, granted, but don’t for a second think it’s a soft touch either. The 570S is seriously fast, but in a way that is manageable. With the 650S, as capable as it was, with that kind of ferocious power, you kind of felt like you were hanging on for dear life. The 570S, on the other hand, is more accessible to the layman, with enough power to thrill, and take you to the outer limits of your comfort zone, but never beyond into the dark regions of terror! Amazingly, despite the fact that the 570S now features more conventional springs and roll-bar suspension rather than the interlinked hydraulic suspension as seen on the 650, it still has the almost supernatural agility, balance and precision of its elder sibling – it is still a McLaren, after all – and this allows you to really extract the utmost from the roaring V8. The difference comes in laying down the power on the exits. It only took a very short time for me to decide I wasn’t man enough for the 650S on track mode (no ESC). The 570S, on the other hand, was far more within my skill set, and flooring the throttle and correcting the power slides with a flick of the wheel became almost a routine, albeit a hugely exhilarating one. Like the 650S, it also features excellently weighted hydraulic steering with good feedback that gives you almost cerebral control over the car. It’s just awesome, awesome fun. ➻

ISLAND RIDES
Not every day involves a mountain drive, though, so how is the 570 on normal roads? In our humble opinion, the 570S is better as a daily driver than the 650S, as the interior is that little bit more accommodating, and they’ve cut a section out of the carbon tub to allow for easier ingress/egress. It’s also got a new ‘hanging’ centre console instead of the ‘flying’ one, which 88
fact magazine
has a gap in the middle so that you can access the cup holders more easily, rather than having to reach awkwardly around the back of the one in the 650S. The Iris infotainment system has been improved slightly, and works better than it ever has before, and the new completely digital instrument cluster looks superb, changing configuration depending which settings you have the car in.
Overall, the 570S feels more usable than the 650S in almost every way, even though it also feels less extreme in every way as well. If you’re looking for that vicious thrill that only a supercar can give you, the 650S is what you want. However, if you’re looking for an awesome sports car that can realistically function as a daily driver, then the 570S is small compromise! ✤

ISLAND RIDES
A stylish little French compact CUV with big space, big storage, and a five-star EuroNCAP rating for a very affordable price – what’s not to like?
The Captur is part of that ever growing and somewhat strange segment known as the mini-CUV, being essentially marketed as small ‘urban SUVs’. It includes cars like the Nissan Juke (with which the Captur shares a platform), and the Mini Countryman. However, they’re usually based on the chassis of their hatchback brethren (the Renault Clio, in the Captur’s case), they’re rarely four-wheel drive, and their off-road capability is practically zero. What they really are, if we’re being honest, are hatchbacks with bigger space and a higher stance, making them more practical and easier to get in and out of. If we can just call a spade a spade and consider the Renault Captur from this perspective, we can appreciate it for what it is, which is a stylish and practical urban family run-around. From the outside, the Captur boasts those European good looks that Renault seem to do so well, and inside, there’s plenty of room and comfortable seating. In terms of storage there’s a goodsized boot that is easily accessible. In the passenger cabin, there are plenty of cubbyholes and pockets to stash things in, and a unique feature is the drawerstyle glove box that also makes for very easy access, especially for the driver. The back seats slide back and forth for extra legroom, which is a great feature, and also fold flat for big cargo space. When it comes to the exterior, the interesting thing about the Captur is the level of choice available for the detailing. You can opt for painted alloys, two92

ISLAND RIDES
“The Renault Captur makes up for what it lacks in excitement with its good looks, comfort and economy.” tone paint jobs, coloured light or grille surrounds and more, so you can really create something of your own making. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we highly recommend that you don’t stint and opt for the top-spec LE model, as this is the only one that offers the two-tone paintwork, seven-inch touchscreen on the dash and the snazzy 17-inch alloys. Take all those away and you’ve really lost much of what there is to love about this car. The Captur has decent handling thanks
to its wide track, with the wheels pushed to the corners of the car, though the steering is a bit too light, and could do with more weight and feel. The 110hp 1.2l turbocharged engine isn’t exactly high on thrills, but it does boast excellent fuel economy, with a fourhour jaunt around the city barely making a dent in the fuel gauge. The six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic gearbox is commendable too, with smooth and quick changes.
The Renault Captur makes up for what it lacks in excitement with its good looks, comfort and economy. It’s a high frills, low thrills kind of deal, so if you want something safe, stylish and sensible to run the family around in, then this is your car. ✤ The Captur is available in Bahrain from YK Almoayyed & Sons Renault Showroom. Infiniti Making Big Moves Japanese premium automaker Infiniti are making big moves globally, demonstrating their commitment to growth and development. They’ve strengthened their role in the world of Formula One, having discontinued their relationship with the Red Bull F1 team to establish a close technical partnership with the new Renault Sport F1 team, an agreement put in place thanks to the global RenaultNissan Alliance.
They’re committed to strengthening their product line-up as well; having recently launched the new Infiniti Q60 sports coupe and the Q30 premium active crossover at the Geneva Motor Show. This comes as Infiniti Global President Roland Krueger completed a tour of the Middle East last month to show a further commitment to the region and to highlight the astonishing sales successes of the GCC’s dealerships. Stunning New Ferrari ‘Shooting Brake’ The next iteration of the Ferrari FF four-seater has been unveiled ahead of its official global launch at the Geneva Motor Show. The Ferrari GTC4Lusso hails a major evolution of the sporting Grand Tourer concept by integrating rear-wheel steering with fourwheel drive for the first time. The name references illustrious predecessors, such as the 330 GTC or its 2+2 sister model, the 330 GT, and the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. The number 4 alludes to the car’s four comfortable seats. The GTC4Lusso’s V12 engine delivers smooth, consistent power, punching out a massive 680hp at 8,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 697 Nm at 5,750 rpm with 80% already available at just 1,750 rpm for superb responsiveness even at low revs. Inside, generous wraparound seats guarantee all four occupants exceptional comfort and room, and the GTC4Lusso also debuts the new Infotainment platform featuring a 10.25” HD screen with capacitive touch technology. Slinky Slip On
Rainbow Clashes
It may just be Spring’s most sensual suggestion, taking lingerie out of the “underwear” category and onto the street as “outerwear” this season. That’s right, the slip dress is back and it’s slinkier, silkier and sultrier than ever. Some were trimmed and adorned with scalloped lace details, others carried a chiffon charm, while some designers went all-out with a layered look. This earthy elegant look was too good to sleep in, anyway. We welcome the slip on with open arms.
Vivid colours were all the fashion rage on the SS16 runways with sweet and sour shades being worked into a single look. Designers proposed their pantone hits in starburst and acid brights, some with graphic effects like patchwork details and others with the most revered design codes with clashing shards of fabrics to give a crash and repair attitude. Think dramatic fuchsia pinks, and deep oranges and purples!

Mirror Shine
Graphic Lines
SS16 fabrics are going to be shinier, brighter and cooler than ever before. Designers have tested the fashion waters with everything from embellished classic sweaters with broken mirror pieces, to futuristic ruched foil dresses, and grungy gowns. This look works best in the evening, when you can don the brightest sequins and full-on gem-stone shine for unapologetic glamour – go on, have your high-impact metallic moment.
The super stripe struck once more on the SS16 runways as a majority of designers went horizontal, vertical, thick and thin, experimenting with chopped, curled and scattered lines in many hues or monochromatic. The stripe proved to be oh so right as it emerged from the fray of Spring prints as a clear victor on the catwalks – this season, you’ll be hard-pressed to shop without seeing the sheer graphic appeal of a good striped design. Going Green
Oriental Influence
Bottle green, military green, paintbox brights, and shades of lime; in all its glory, green was all the rage on the men’s SS16 runway. There are no rules with this one – go delicately light, strongly bold, or mix and match layers of green for a trendy look. We’re thinking generously cut, well-tailored pieces like trousers, shirting and outerwear to nail the all-green style. Opt for pieces in sea and jade greens to keep your Spring wardrobe looking fresh.
This season saw designers looking eastward towards China and Japan for style influence, tapping into the rich aesthetic heritage of the two nations. Oriental prints and fabrics play an important role in relaxed styling, mixed with sportswear silhouettes like the bomber jacket in luxe fabrics and intricate embroidery. This is a unique and daring trend that, if worn right, could make you the showstopper in any fashion crowd.

Top Pockets
Psychedelic Style
For a more masculine military-inspired look, go for pocket detail this season. Pockets took centre stage and became the hallmark of function for Spring; you’ll find them on everything from the outside of coats and jackets, cargo pants, gilets and even tank suits, giving the illusion of an intrepid explorer while still actually being very practical. This is the fantastical man pocket - the perfect example of both style and substance.
Whether it’s prints, fabrics or colours, things got very vibrant on the men’s SS16 runways. Some designers referenced the 80s with bright “rave-ish” hues, while others went for straight up optical illusion prints and elegant botanical riffs. Wear this look head-to-toe for maximum impact or with either a smart waistcoat or tailored trousers for a high fashion look. For those who dare, try colour blocking with many tones for extra on-trend points. fact magazine

STYLE
Denim Decoded No spring style is complete without a touch of denim; in all cuts and shades, denim returns to the forefront of menswear this season. With a 90s throwback taking shape, a true blue look has never been more on point. Oversized denim jackets are layered over lumberjack shirts and white tees, and faded tones bring a thrifty feel. Skinny jeans are still in, but a looser tapered fit is introduced. Team with a bomber jacket and Chelsea brogues for a truly stylish outfit.

CHEF’S TABLE
It’s unlikely you’ll meet an executive chef like Michael Sang-Kyu Lee – the self-proclaimed crazy chef of Meisei who puts his heart and soul into every dish and thrives on his mad style of cooking. We had a ball of a time with this Chef’s Table at bahrain’s popular japanese fusion restaurant…
“My expression comes from street food. It’s natural, affordable and for the population,” Chef Michael says. “A lot of people think it’s bad for you and unhealthy. But if you go to Japan and South Korea (where his roots are) you’ll find that it’s so fresh and seasonal.” Chef Michael is brimming with passion. With every word he says, his eyes widen, his hands have a life of their own and his animated chatter on food is addictive – his energy is palpable and you could sit and listen to him for hours. “Everything is nostalgia for me,” he says as he demonstrates how to consume the wildly fun Candy Passion drink where you push the plume of cotton candy above the rim of the champagne into the glass – “it’s like a lava lamp.” His motto around the art of cooking is to have fun and go off-piste with tradition because then it becomes a much more enjoyable experience. It’s all about the people and happenings of the past that create his interpretations. Having had a hybrid of cultures around him growing up, where he was raised in Toronto with Asian roots; he is able to bring a real flavour of styles to the table. His culinary background also lends itself to where he is today: “I was taken under the wings of phenomenon ally talented Japanese, Korean, Cantonese chefs,” he tells us. They, were the bedrock for his career which later took him around the Caribbean for over a decade before coming to Bahrain 14 years ago. But, interestingly, (yet somehow unsurprising given chef ’s 118 fact magazine
dynamic and unpredictable nature), cooking was not something that was on the cards – coming from a family of scholars, he calls himself “the black sheep of the family, but cooking just happened for me.” And it is with this experimental, ‘let it happen’ attitude with which he cooks. When asking him what are the three main ingredients he most likes working with, he doesn’t have a definitive answer except: “anything fresh and vibrant. I’m not the type to say I want something from the land or the sea. When it comes to my recipes, I have no idea how they work, something just clicks with them.” Chef Michael is extremely precise when talking about his dishes. As we dive into the Crispy Duck Salad, he highlights all the elements in both a haphazard and careful way to show how layered his dishes are. With Sakura mix truffle oil, roasted fig and shallot vinaigrette, black Hawaiian salt, yuzu grape seed oil, toasted pine nuts, dried berries and assorted citrus, this dish screams with flavour.
Menu Crispy Duck Salad Hamachi Salsa Grilled Serrano Baby Chicken Vegetaraian Dol Sot Kalbi Gim Grand Meisei Indulgence
“There’s no special way of eating it,” he assures us. He doesn’t want us to be shy or worry about being ‘proper’ whilst eating his creations. When we “mmmm” he applauds our “howling and grunting noises, I love it, that’s what I aim for.” As far as eating experiences go, you have so much fun at Meisei with Chef Michael - no rules, no frills. We had a glorious selection of dishes including a Hamachi Salsa: marinated yellow tail, wasabi tobiko and jalapeno vinaigrette followed by a Grilled Serrano Baby Chicken: apple wood salt, Peruvian mash (such a great novelty), Thai basil puree, fresh spicy Serrano micro cress and Aji Amarillo chilli along with a Vegetaraian Dol Sot (wonderful presentation) which included black wild rice, grilled shitake, spring onions, zucchini, carrots and spicy gochijang sauce. The one dish that got us endlessly “ooing and aahing” was the Kalbi Gim: braised beef short ribs, scalloped potatoes, roasted vegetables and pine nuts. As Chef Michael states: “This is a special dish, my mother’s recipe.” We’ve never actually tasted anything softer and insanely mouthwatering ever! But if you really want to be wowed at the end of all that, the Grand Meisei Indulgence is a feat of sweet delicacies, in both presentation and taste. L
et’s get our glad rags on, shall we? When an invite comes from the likes of Le Chocolat, with all its excellent food, a certain degree of etiquette is required. The Seef District’s Le Chocolat has enjoyed many years of success with the most well-heeled members of society tucking into elegant cakes and fabulous teas – as well as gourmet mains, too. Le Chocolat has always served as a space for all day meetings, catch-ups between mothers and for those with an indulgent sweet tooth! Saar, being a major hangout on the island, is the perfect location for Le Chocolat and the fact that it’s always bustling with people, is no surprise. As we arrived on the ground floor of the two-storey Le Chocolat, at Saar Mall, we were ushered to the more roomy second floor – the lifts open onto a regal looking reception area with a grand table and a gold rimmed mirror – it almost inspired us to chant that old “mirror, mirror, on the wall” line as it’s very charming. The main seating area is all about making you feel your best self with oodles of sophistication, courtesy of the plush, lordly seats and the floor-to-ceiling windows allow floods of light through, so it’s very airy and open. The chandeliers drip with crystals and the pillars are, again, another feature that give this venue a kingly touch. We were set to taste a host of new items on the menu, from salads to fish to their sinfully good desserts. For starters we had a Quinoa and Rocca Leaves Salad with Avocado, Cherry Tomatoes, Feta Cheese, Bell Peppers, Asparagus and Pomegranate dressing. The salad is loaded with flavour, particularly from the dressing, where you get both a sweet and tarty aftertaste and the rocca gives a nice kick. It has to be said, the freshness is amazing and it’s very filling too. Up next was a Grapefruit and Kiwi Salad which includes Green Oak Lettuce, Kale Leaves, Fennel Bulb, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Kiwi and, the best part, Crispy Cooked Beef Bacon served with a Grapefruit Vinaigrette. It might seem like an unlikely pairing but biting into a piece of juicy grapefruit followed by a crunch of bacon is, honestly, the stuff of dreams. Again, this is a very vibrant salad in both taste and appearance. The menu includes a Crazy Water Fish of 122 fact magazine

the Day and, for us, it was a Sea Bass Fish Casserole with Cherry Tomato, Potato, Bell Peppers, Fennel, Kalamata Olives and Herbs – served with a stick of toasted bread. It’s very much a winter-warmer dish that will give you energy – and you can really taste the top-quality ingredients used. All the dishes come in hearty bowls with more than enough to fill you up, Le Chocolat does not skimp on quality or quantity! A trip to Le Chocolat is definitely not complete without a round of cakes – we have celebrated many a birthday with Le Chocolat’s amazing offerings of cake! Let’s
start by saying how unreal the oversized Raspberry Macaroon is! The temptation is real, people. It’s gooey on the inside and brittle on the outside and, basically, we demolished it in about three minutes. The Milk Chocolate Dome, Red Velvet Cake, Lotus Cheesecake and Cortado (coffee) all do a fine job finishing off our meal, leaving us to do an internal happy dance. An afternoon tea or lunch spent at Le Chocolat is an absolute pleasure. l Abraaj has always been a mainstay in Bahrain’s restaurant circuit – much so for its family friendly environment and exceptional grills. As far as Arabic food goes, it’s a fantastic entry into a deliciously layered cuisine. It tends to be the first pick for newbies on the island who haven’t had a chelo kebab before – let’s be honest, most don’t know what it is – but when they do get acquainted, OMG! This whole healthy eating kick is no longer just a fad; everyone is on board with it now. And while Al Abraaj has never been considered unhealthy, they have now introduced a “Lighter Menu”. Fear not though, it’s not a complete 180 on those drippy kebabs and insanely smooth chicken breasts (I mean that’s healthy as it is) but there’s more of an emphasis on the greens, sweet potato (never complain) and the buzzword of all clean eaters: quinoa. We got to try all eight dishes from the new menu. Full disclosure: every single dish has a distinctly Al Abraaj touch, be it that char grillness or the herbs, these healthy options are simply “lighter” than their counterparts from the main menu. We all know and love that Mix Grill, yes? Well in the lighter menu you can still look forward to the chicken breast and lamb kebab (low fat) but also, grilled salmon. The pinky salmon was succulent and very complementary to the other meats. Of course a mix grill isn’t complete without rice, but here, it’s brown rice. A lighter menu wouldn’t be so without its trademark salads. You’ve got a Quinoa and Almond Salad with Torn Chicken Breast – the sprinkled nuts are a very interesting addition and add an earthy flavour. There’s also the Brown Penne Pasta with Torn Chicken Breast which is amazingly soft to chew –

sometimes healthy pasta is made far too al dente but at Al Abraaj, they’ve got it right. By far the most crowd-pleasing dish was the Baked Vegetables with Grilled Chicken Breast – both in presentation and in taste, it gets our firm favourite vote. On a bed of juicy grilled veggies including: sweet potato, tomatoes, and aubergines (perfectly sweet, owing to its berry roots), this dish seems to never end in goodness. There’s just something so unbeatable about that chicken. However it arrives on your table, as breast or sheesh tawook, it’s going to be something else. In between our mains we nibbled on the Light Hummous with Brown Flat Bread and Light Fresh Yoghurt. You can never go wrong with a plate of creamy, spreadable hummous. We’re not sure about you but we get all jittery if we haven’t had our hummous fix within 48 hours. You definitely won’t be feeling too stodgy afterwards with this slightly dialeddown-on-the-tahini hummous. You’ll definitely be in feel-good mode with Al Abraaj’s lighter menu especially if you visit their Hamala branch, where we had our light feast, as the venue has a vintage Bahrain feel with black and white images of palm trees dotted about as well as ornate coffee pots and brass mounted chests. In all, we thoroughly enjoyed our dishes and can safely safe Al Abraaj has added another string to their bow. ✤ GO: Try the new lighter menu at any Al Abraaj branch. #Chinese #New #Year #at #Four #Seasons #Hotel Members of the media were invited for a special tasting in an intimate setting at re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck to savour the venue’s Chinese New Year menu. The menu was made up of a whole jumbo headon prawn, which represents family togetherness; cumin-soy marinated lamb chops with a five vegetable stir-fry , which stood for the five blessings of the New Year including longevity, riches, peace, wisdom and virtue; and monkey bread sticky cake with tangerine ice cream, chosen because the pronunciation for the word “tangerine” sounds much like the pronunciation of the word “money” in Mandarin. 130 fact magazine

Things to Consider When Choosing a Personal Trainer
Are You Living in the Grey Zone?
Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…
Christal Dennis, Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist, is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...
There are many personal trainers out there and the majority of them are great and will help you achieve your goals but, unfortunately, some are just not, so here are a few things to look out for when choosing a personal trainer for your fitness needs. - Quick Results: With all the magazines telling people you can have these abs in two weeks or you can get this butt in two weeks - run for the hills, as this is just not true. What you need is a trainer who is honest with you and will tell you the truth about what it really takes to achieve your goals: - Bad Information: If you come across a trainer that is telling you women shouldn’t lift weights, cardio is best for weight loss or doing 1000 abdominal exercises will get you a flat stomach, once again, run for the hills. - Education: Now, by this I mean, as much as you may like your trainer, their goal is to teach you everything you need to know in a safe way with proper technique so that you will eventually be able to work out by yourself. I could go on and on about this subject but, one things for sure, hiring a personal trainer is a good way to make working out enjoyable. You should feel comfortable and motivated with your trainer as you’re going to be spending a lot of time with them, but trust your gut and get referrals from friends if you’re unsure. ✤
Do you feel like you are just sleep walking through life that you can’t see the meaning in the life you are leading right now, and that life does not seem to have much pleasure? Do you feel like the things that are supposed to be high points in your life are not very different from those things that are low points in your life? If any of this sounds familiar then you are most probably living in the grey zone. Notice how aware you are of your emotions. Do you know what you are feeling and are you able to trust what you are feeling to the point that it can be your guidance system? Many people get out of touch with this guidance system because emotions can get painful and uncomfortable. So they think that if we can just get emotions out of the way, we don’t have to experience the pain. Unfortunately, when we get rid of the pain, we also get rid of the good stuff, our ability to enjoy life. So here is a challenge. It’s not for the faint of heart, but for those courageous souls out there. Face what is inside like a warrior. Face what is in there with compassion for yourself. Welcome what is in there knowing that it will open up a life of experiential richness far beyond what we can imagine right now, if we are still in the grey zone. Take the challenge. It really is worth it! ✤

How I Feel About F1... Georgina Jennsen is the blogger behind the popular lifestyle blog, Blonde in Bahrain. Georgina loves all things beautiful and luxurious.
While I was holidaying in Melbourne last week, I spent the good part of a day in the BMW showroom, waiting patiently while my sister treated herself to a brand new beemer. Lucky girl. Anyhow the salesman’s name was Sam, and he was super-smooth. He was also a massive F1 enthusiast. And while I was making the most of the luxury carmaker’s complementary coffee and croissants, super-smooth Sam talked to me about all things F1. He told me that the race track in Melbourne is reassembled annually, costing many millions of dollars. He explained that digital technology created for the F1 has been adapted for medical use. He also told me that Bahrain hosted the first race of the season a few times, but now hosts the third. Yep, super-smooth Sam loved his F1, and was very well-versed in it. I’ve only been to one F1, back in 2012. Some parts were fab. The excitement leading up to the start, the cool headset I got to wear, and the hair-raising Gulf Air flyover. Oh, and the lounge in which you could drink bubbly and watch the race on TV, just like you were in your own living room. Loved that. There were also parts I wasn’t into. The noise of the engines, the traffic to and from the circuit, and the relentless heat even though it was only April. Overall I would say that it was interesting and I’m glad I went, but it wasn’t really my thing. Regardless of how I feel about the F1, there’s no denying it’s been hugely important for Bahrain. For many people around the world, it’s put this country on the map. And it’s always refreshing when you tell a foreigner you live in Bahrain, and they say “Oh yes, I know a bit about Bahrain...” ✤ GO: Keep up with Georgina at www.blondeinbahrain.com and on instagram @blondeinbahrain.

island insider What makes Bushido stand out in Bahrain’s dining scene?
Describe your ideal day off in Bahrain...
Three things t0 look forward to at Bushido for 2016…
The versatility of our venue is unique in Bahrain. Being on one side a trendy Japanese Restaurant with Teppanyaki and Sushi counters as well as a cosy lounge for drinks and a famous Shisha area. Transformed on a monthly basis to one of the hottest clubs in town with international acts hosting up to 1600 guests - with this unique concept we are able to offer a variety of options for a great evening out. We’re constantly reinventing ourselves to be the ultimate dining spot on the island and keeping up the Samurai spirit.
There’s nothing better than spending a relaxing day with my family at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Followed by a casual dinner in one of the many great dining spots in town. Since I arrived on the island, Arabic cuisine has become one of my favorites. I’m always looking forward to tasting new dishes, spices and flavours and I’m always thankful for any new recommendations from my local friends.
Being a part of the Buddha Bar network we have the privilege of working with the highly recognised Japanese Chef, Shigeki Limura who is developing exciting new creations and unique presentations to add to our popular menu. Our upstairs lounge has a strong presence in Bahrain’s nightlife scene, to offer more variety to party goers, we will be welcoming top DJs from our Buddha Bar sister properties around the world. Our Shisha are has become so popular that we will be expanding the area this year and offering Arabic live music on a weekly basis.
