Differences simply act as a yarn of curiosity unraveling until we get to the other side.” - Ciore Taylor

H

aving lived out most of my 20s in Bahrain, one of the most rewardng things about my time in this warm and welcoming country has been to witness its evolving and growing cultural events and exchange with other nations all over the world. What many might see as a very normal aspect of life in Bahrain, that is, being open to people, entertainment, food and ideas that represent far-reaching corners of the globe, to others this is what makes Bahrain the very special place it is today. Our little island nation that has become home to many, certainly doesn't do things by half when celebrating cultural differences. And that's why Bahrain continues to be a pioneer in the Gulf, especially when it comes to showcasing worldly talents alongside its own heritage. With that said, the fabulous lineup for the annual Spring of Culture festival is looking mighty strong for 2019. FACT takes a closer look at all the cool events on offer; from film and music to exhibitions, lectures, street theatre and so much more, all covering countries including Azerbaijan, Japan, Korea and others, you can mark something new in your calendar for each day. Turn to p23 and take it away... Taking a turn towards a more delicious path to all things tasty, this month’s dining features are an absolute treat. Our Culinary Spotlight takes place at the everpleasing Downtown Rotana where a seafood focus on Lobster & Crabs makes for a yummy Friday feast (p83); whereas things move into a cooler, casual realm with the newest NYC joint in town, Black Tap at Jumeirah Royal Saray Bahrain (p87); and our Foodie Corner leaves so much to envy with an exclusive, private setting at CUT by Wolfgang Puck in Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay (p91). Find everything from food to fashion, tech, beauty, travel, motoring and wellness throughout the issue. Choose from our favourite picks of Mother's Day treats and gifts, or start planning your F1 weekend with the bffs - we've got it all! I can hardly believe it's March already but that only means one month closer to the return of GoT and planning binge-watch snacks - the anticipation is REAL. Who's with me? ☺

Hotel Mumbai WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

There’s amazing action sequences with a hint of comedy. Sidestepping from the traditional origin story concept, this allnew energetic adventure definitely gets a yes from us. – Captain Marvel

After a series of terrifying terror attacks take place all over the city of Mumbai, things will never be the same for the people of India. The film follows the heartbreaking story about the victims and survivors of the 2008 Mumbai attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

DIRECTOR: Anthony Maras CAST: Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

A chilling look inside the true events of 26/11, Hotel Mumbai is an unlikely crowd pleaser. An event that changed India’s approach towards terrorism forever, Anthony Maras does a great job of depicting the events sensitively while also keeping it very raw. Hotel Mumbai aims to present a reliable narrative of what happened during the three-day ordeal. Based on interviews of survivors and witnesses, the film introduces the viewers to the overwhelming terror and tension that everyone involved experienced. Showing the impact of the attacks on locals and visitors in equal measure, Maras gives much of the narrative space to the four gunmen. Straying away from the traditional notions of heroism, Hotel Mumbai puts no one in the heroic spotlight. Stunningly framed and photographed, the film is the perfect tribute to everyone affected by the terrible tragedy.

ARTBAB 2019 The 4th edition of the Middle East’s youngest and most promising art fair will take place from March 6 to 10 at the Bahrain Exhibitions & Convention Centre.

IN 2019, THE THEME OF the exhibition will be ‘Legacies’ which will explore the nearly 50 year-old Bahraini contemporary art scene and its foundation in the Kingdom’s rich art heritage. Kaneka Subberwal, Fairs and Programme Director of ArtBAB 2019, said: “The art fair’s 2019 edition would be an exciting amalgam of Bahraini art and cutting-edge trends discussed during the conference. This year, in a first for the region, ArtBAB will take visitors beyond the canvases of the gifted artists of Bahrain and the gallerists who bring some of the famous contemporary artworks to showcase at the fair and take them not just across borders but across time-frames too.” At the same time, the exhibition is pushing boundaries and will offer visitors a truly multi-layered and multi-dimensional experience through exposure to a Virtual Reality Corner that allows exploration of some of the world’s leading private museums and a diverse Speaker’s Programme that will bring together art foundations, cultural districts and museums with fintech, blockchain, AI and VR specialists. “We are proud of the unique conversations that we have started about Bahraini art around the world – in 2018 alone, our supporting project Artists Across Borders has taken 25 Bahraini artists to Paris, Moscow, Singapore and the U.K.,” said Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Director of the Office of Her Royal Highness Wife of the King of Bahrain. 42

“In the 2019 edition of the Fair, we shall explore not just the heritage and legacies that inspire Bahraini contemporary art but also the new directions of art on the global stage. We shall also have a beautifully curated Artisanal Room featuring special installations and large masterpieces rooted in the traditional skills of Bahraini crafts heritage.” In its effort to decode the intersection between art, culture and technology, ArtBAB 2019 will host an impressive array of speakers through a series of panel discussions, debates and interviews. Kaneka added: “Our Virtual Corner at ArtBAB 2019 truly takes the art experience beyond borders – the public will be able to have three different VR experiences using Vive Pro Headsets and literally ‘touch’ celebrated contemporary Chinese art collections, 17th century Dutch and Flemish masterpieces as well as millennial VR artwork.” Another major impactful move from ArtBAB 2019 will be the redefining of Bahrain’s rich crafts heritage through a contemporary design input. Visitors can view large modern installations of Bahraini crafts seen from a fresh perspective and explore chic, contemporary modernized Bahraini crafts that will take to the world a new portrait of Bahrain as a country which is open to contemporary thought and where the timeless old traditions adapt to new thought without losing their essence.

“We have taken the talent and the historical memory of craftsmanship that sustains Bahrain’s crafts, passed it through the prism of contemporary sensibility and created a chic, artbased version of Bahraini craft pieces that will have global appeal,” Kaneka explained. “We have applied the same skills and rules but to create very different things. We believe that our ‘Artisans Across Borders’ initiative will open new creative channels and is an important step in nurturing a sustainable economy for the creative energy of the Kingdom, making the arts and crafts relevant in the new millennium.” ✤

ver brunch at Flair No.5, The Ritz-Carlton DIFC’s foliage-filled rooftop restaurant, our dining companion tells us that she has a high-rolling friend who practically lives at the hotel. She’s tried countless competitors in the area but comes back every time because of the unbeatable service. American tycoon and founder of J.C Penney, James Cash Penney, famously said: “Courteous treatment will make a customer a walking advertisement.” It is evident, during our two-night stint at the five-star hotel located in Dubai’s Financial District that this ethos beats at the heart of every member of The RitzCarlton DIFC team. But first impressions first, which begin as our taxi swings into the hotel’s impressive black marble entrance courtyard – to the right a cluster of alfresco tables are filled with the buzz of locals and visitors enjoying coffee and freshly-baked treats at casual ground floor café Cake. In the gleaming lobby, a small gaggle of guests are lining up to

check in but, to our surprise (its 2pm on a Friday – AKA peak tourist time), we’re waiting barely ten seconds before we’re ushered to the front and embark on the first of many delightful encounters with the efficient and friendly staff. Our 7th floor Premier Room is probably the only part of The RitzCarlton DIFC experience that doesn’t feel entirely polished. Its size (huge bed decked with that five-star linen that never feels the same at home, imposing dark-wood desk, silk-lined window-seat flanking one wall) is more than generous, and the cleverly designed bathroom gleams with the luxury of stainless steel and marble, but the décor feels a bit… tired. Like everything in Dubai, it’s hardly old (the hotel is currently celebrating its 8th anniversary) and although it's a beautiful space, there is certainly room for décor revamps. That being said, we sleep like a baby on a mattress fit for a princess and love the bathrobe so much we mourn having to get out of it and down to breakfast on both mornings. fact magazine

Which brings us nicely to the cuisine, an area where The Ritz-Carlton DIFC team earns every corner of those five stars. Our two-day hotel restaurant safari begins with The Secret Garden Brunch at Flair No.5 (helpfully named for those, like us, who never listen when they tell you which floor a restaurant is on). Taking place every Friday from 12pm to 5pm, this is very much a party brunch, which becomes clear the moment you step into the urban garden and hear it before you see it. The visuals might be delayed by the insistent beat of the Resident DJ, but they are worth the wait – the al fresco bar-cumrestaurant is teaming with photo-ops, from suspended floral garlands to oversized pots filled with wide-leafed plants creating an evergreen backdrop - stunning. Brunch at Flair No.5 is a high-octane few hours, a steady parade of sharing dishes served straight to the low-tables of raised lounge seating. It’s a format of which we

approve wholeheartedly, meaning we can perch happily watching expert-waiters whip up impressively named cocktails at the bar and sharply dressed regulars abandoning the eating part to dance and mingle in the melee. Highlights from the menu include crisp balls of arancini rich with mushroom and oozing with sharp Taleggio, firm lamb koftas kicked into gear by a sauce singing with cumin and mint, a selection of brightly-flavoured salads – one with burrata that is impossible to leave alone – and some seriously spicy and deliciously sticky chicken skewers. To finish, try to stop talking long enough to sample the fun ice pops (we didn’t and ended up with brain freezes from trying to save passion fruit stains on our skirts). A different experience but equally compelling, was Saturday Brunch at Le Cirque. Billed as a New York-based modish eatery and sister restaurant to its same-named Big Apple counterpart, it’s a classy affair and one that does bring to mind previous visits to NYC’s Upper East Side. Like any fine-dining restaurant worth its stark white table cloths, the service is immaculate – the black waistcoated waiters clearly trained to be charming, swift and completely unobtrusive. Wondering past a decidedly more refined clientele than the day before (no pumping music here, the Resident DJ is replaced with a resident clown as part of Le Cirque’s circus themed brunch) we spot wealthy doyens of Dubai and elegant families chattering cheerfully. Everything we sample from a set menu of eggs, main dishes, pastas and decadent desserts is top notch – a basket bulging with still-warm croissants, fluffy muffins and pastries oozing with fruit being an excellent start. Still full from the previous day, we kept it light with a sunshine yellow asparagus frittata and crunchy tuna fact magazine

As to be expected by now, the wellness team is thorough and thoughtful – checking genuinely that any preferences are noted. The treatment itself is faultless, our small but powerful therapist determinedly kneading away any stress-induced knots with expert hands. Floating out in a cloud of lavender, we make the most of the steam room and serene relaxation area to maximise on detoxing time. The next morning, after another deep slumber, a farewell breakfast and an internal struggle not to steal that bathrobe, we find ourselves being speedily checked out by the same smiling team member we encountered 48 hours earlier. She’s not only as efficient as we remember, but genuinely concerned that our stay has been everything we wanted it to be. Leaving the lobby for the reality of our own apartment, we feel a tinge of envy for that lucky lady that lives there and can’t help but agree with JC Penny: if courteous treatment is the answer to good PR, then we should all be talking about the excellent team and service at The Ritz-Carlton DIFC. ✤

RAM AHEAD

THE ALL-NEW 2019 1500 LIMITED RAM PROVE THEY ARE SEGMENT LEADERS WITH THEIR LATEST PICKUP DESIGN

51

• ISLAND RIDES At Fact Magazine we have test driven a vast array of vehicles produced under a variety of brands. This month however, we got to test drive our very first RAM Pickup Truck and as we had hoped, it was a memorable experience to say the least. There is nothing bashful about the RAM 1500 Limited and it delivers a huge statement from the moment eyes are laid upon it. Despite this model being 102kgs lighter than its predecessor, it is also longer and wider, ensuring its hugely domineering presence exudes both power and prestige. The “in-your-face” design of this vehicle is headed by the chiselled Ram’s head logo and the R-A-M grilles. No one will ever mistake the brand of vehicle you have chosen to drive. It also boasts a new LED Adapted Front-lighting System (AFS), including twin bifunctional projector headlamps, fog lamps and tail lamps. 20inch aluminium wheels and power running boards give the Ram even more attitude, whilst the storage capacity of 151-litres is almost 100 percent greater than its closest rivals, placing it in a league of its own when it comes to transporting goods. This model is the strongest Ram 1500 ever produced with the most advanced frame in the segment that features an exclusive front splayed rail design. Despite the rugged good looks of this impressive machine, it is however the interior that reveals its luxurious nature. This all-new top of the range 2019 Ram 1500 features a lavish interior that has been crafted for ultimate comfort and convenience. The premium leather, ventilated bucket seats are 8-way power adjustable with memory for both the driver and passenger. We loved the commanding view of the road we held from this seated position and found them to be very comfortable. Leather and real wood trimmings are found throughout the cabin, including the stylish wood and leather wrapped steering wheel. The Ram Limited houses the award-winning fourth-generation Uconnect® and class-exclusive, 12-inch (305mm) reconfigurable touchscreen display with navigation and split-screen capability for dual-application operation. Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ are fitted as standard, as is the wireless charging pad. The designers of this vehicle have ensured an interactive, userfriendly setup with the reimagined centre console allowing for a whopping 12 different storage configurations. Slipping into the second row, we were greeted by slide reclining seats, a true flat-load floor with integrated RamBins complete with tie-down rings and expandable seat storage. Every aspect of this vehicle seems to have been designed with functionality and practicality in mind. The extra length of this model translates to a truly spacious interior meaning more leg room for all occupants. This 2019 model is powered by the legendary 5.7 litre HEMI® V8 with variable valve timing (VVT) that provides greater efficiency and performance. This engine delivers 359hp at 5600 rpm, 410 lb-ft of torque in a smooth, broad power band that avoids the hesitation and peakiness of turbocharged engines and is linked to a smooth 8-speed transmission. So, although the power of this vehicle is hugely apparent, it is delivered in such a way that it is not overbearing or unnecessarily noisy. In fact, this engine does not sound or feel like a V8 until you want it to. With the windows up on the highway, it runs crossover 52

quiet, thanks in part to expanded active noise cancellation and cylinder deactivation. All of this power on offer is kept in check by the largest brake rotors in the segment at 14.9-inches (378mm). This definitely helps to provide a feeling of complete control when on the roads. A unique link-coil rear suspension system adds to the smooth ride and also allows the driver, via a separate button on the key fob, to lower the truck, allowing for easier passenger entry. The Frequency Response Damping (FRD) shocks also helps to deliver a fantastic combination of ride and handling. Fuel saver technology has also been utilised to ensure this vehicle is lighter on the pocket. Important safety features of the RAM include Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind-spot monitoring, Forward Collision WarningPlus, Ready Alert Breaking, LanseSense Lane Departure Warning as well as ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Par and Hill-start Assist. All-in-all, our first RAM Truck experience was a novel one and we were most impressed by the performance, comfort and luxurious feel of this well-constructed Pickup. ✤

Ted’s florals are inspired by handpicked flowers with a dark side. Vibrant hues of red, orange and turquoise are clashed on his bold Fantasia print, while light meets dark on his Oracle print. He’s also woven geometric prints throughout the season, with bright greens and flashes of fuchsia creating ‘70s inspired patterns, romanticised with Ted’s signature individuality. Ted’s a charmer, and his unparalleled eye for detail continues to create pieces that captivate, from individually placed embroideries to pops of bright red trim. Modern hemlines feature throughout the collection, from structured jumpsuits to trans-seasonal outerwear. Ted has fallen in love with glamorous georgette, adding his modern take to drop-waist dresses, shirts and skirts with delicate gathered, frilled and pleated details. LEADING HOSPITALITY VERY RECENTLY APPOINTED AS THE NEW GENERAL MANAGER OF THE ICONIC INTERCONTINENTAL REGENCY BAHRAIN, PHILIPP JOHN ECONOMOU BRINGS OVER TWO DECADES OF EXPERIENCE TO THE POSITION. HOSPITALITY Q&A •

What have been your first impressions of Bahrain and its hospitality market? I have found Bahrain to be very family oriented and very easy to adapt to. As per the survey done by HSBC, Bahrain is among the top 10 places where one can settle in quite fast. And I am a standing example of that. With its simplicity, I believe it is one of the best countries to live in. Bahrain has a vision of bringing in more international events and conferences which in turn increases the demand for rooms. The InterContinental Regency Bahrain has set a benchmark for quality accommodation in Manama. What’s your vision for the hotel during your management? Our vision and dream is to bring back the glorious Regency days. Modernise & enhance the Regency image without forgetting legacy. We have guests who have been visiting the hotel for more than 30 years. They’ve met here, married here and even their children are now getting married here. There’s a lot of history in this property and I would like to incorporate its rich heritage, tradition and luxury in all our future plans. Share with us your past experience that has geared you up for this role. What has kept you so loyal and dedicated to the hospitality industry? I grew up in a hotelier family and from a young age, I already knew that I wanted to work in the hotel industry. Simply because I love the interaction I get from people; it is something I always look forward to. When you receive fact magazine

• HOSPITALITY Q&A a good review from a guest about their stay and experience, the feeling is indescribable. Being the General Manager of a hotel that is an institution in Bahrain can mean a lot of pressure. Tell us more about your expertise and lessons learned over the years that have helped you prepare for this job? Over the years I have learned that our people and guests are what keeps us going. Our staff is the lifeblood of our hotel. Leading a high-performing team is therefore less about driving performance and more about inspiring & creating an environment where team members feel valued, energised and supported; and therefore able and motivated to perform to their full potential and delight our guests and over-deliver on results. You’ll need to proactively stay on top of anything that could potentially affect your hiring and development processes and be sure to make whatever changes are necessary to optimise your staff accordingly. In properties of this high calibre where not much really needs changing, how do you keep yourself challenged and continuously ahead in the hospitality game? We live in a fast-moving world; the greatest challenge is to keep up with new trends and to adapt to them. Our business is constantly evolving, for example, everything has gone digital including the way guests are booking. Guests have many choices nowadays; we have to keep up with the changes and understand what is important to today’s generation. Who would you say is the 2019 clientele of the InterContinental Regency Bahrain– describe the person who walks in through the hotel doors… Affluent, experienced traveller who is passionate about authentic experiences.

=The responsibilities of General Manager could get overwhelming at times. How do you manage your time, expectations and the need for attention to detail? Having a goal without a plan is just a wish … so planning is extremely important for the success in our business. Empowerment is another key word for me ...part of the culture at the InterContinental Regency is to create a “psychologically safe environment” which allows colleagues for moderate risk-taking, speaking their mind, creativity and taking decision without fear… Planning and Empowerment equals... more time for all of us to focus on the attention to details which will differentiate us from the competition. What’s your approach to everyday motivation for your staff – how do you make sure that everyone is on the same page, everyday? I generally start my day with a walk through of the property, touching base with the various departments and just making sure there aren’t any big fires that need to be put out first thing. Being visible to the staff and guests in this way shows you are both interested and approachable. Plus we have a morning briefing with the department heads to make sure I’m up to speed on how things are going in their department and what needs they have. Can you tell us a little bit about any upcoming promotions or strategies you will utilise for appeal to both business and leisure travellers? We are looking forward to the launch of some of our newly renovated rooms with their modern technology and luxurious settings that will cater to both our corporate and leisure travellers. The other highlight for this year is the new visual identity for InterContinental hotels which reflects the affluent and indulgent lifestyles that our guests live. ✤

MARKETING MOGUL FACT CAUGHT UP WITH MARYAM JAHRAMI, MARKETING MANAGER AT GBL GROUP TO TALK SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES, BRAND IDENTIT Y AND WHAT MAKES BOTH FLORENCE L A MAISON MÉDITERRANÉENNE AND HAZEL ROOFTOP LOUNGE A HUGE SUCCESS ON BAHRAIN’S FASTGROWING FOOD AND BEVERAGE SCENE…

fact magazine

75

• HOSPITALITY Q&A Hi Maryam! Tell us more about your day to day role at GBL Group and the tasks involved with running a busy marketing department at Hazel, Florence and Dar Zowayed? The food and beverage industry rely heavily on the image created by the marketing of said brand. As a restaurant, your reputation is critical to your success. Word of mouth trumps any kind of strategic marketing. That’s why it is all about creating a memorably outstanding experience for the customers. My role is to manage and deliver marketing tactics for the brands to help establish GBL’s mark in the hospitality sector, by creating unique and locally founded brands that will challenge Bahrain’s expectations when it comes to dining and nightlife. What are some of the strategies and marketing tools that you implement in everyday material to promote the two venues to their full potential? Food and beverage marketing is a gold-mine opportunity for creative marketing professionals. For one, food and beverage represents consumables: these are not luxury items that marketers must convince consumers they need to have. Instead, they are essentials, and the role of marketing professionals is to convince consumers that they need one item over another. So, food and beverage marketing revolves around a number of elements that draw customers to a product. The key is to build strong brand recognition through establishing a brand presence in and outside the restaurant venue. From print marketing such as packaging to creating a digital presence through mobile marketing with the usage of social media, viral marketing and search engine optimisation. As a Marketing Manager, what are the most challenging factors you face and how do you overcome these? In this industry, it’s safe to say that you are constantly working when consumers are relaxing. Creating memorable customer experiences is a combination of great service and entertainment, which means a lot of work during holidays and being very involved and hands-on with all your brands. Another challenge I enjoy is working with diverse brands and tailoring each brand identity to target the correct audience and create a demand for your product to encourage brand awareness and build a longstanding reputation of culinary excellence. Both Florence, Hazel and Dar Zowayed have a strong social media presence - tell us some of the ways in which you have been able to achieve this? The marketing professionals in our team work hard to create fresh and exciting social content that is engaging and promotional at the same time. We develop a social feed that is exciting and visually pleasing to our target audience. Through utilising research and development, our team keep up with the latest market trends and opportunities. Describe your working style - do you like to stay more on top of the latest trends or do you prefer to think out of the box and be extra creative? Trends are always a great way to capture your desired target 76

HOSPITALITY Q&A •

audience. The focus is to create a conversation among an influential group and use that group to spread the word. This can be through buzz marketing and trends. However, I find that thinking out of the box is better at helping create a distinctly special brand and offer each guest a bespoke and unforgettable experience. What are some of the things that you love about working in marketing for some of Bahrain's most successful F&B concepts? Networking has always been one of my strongest attributes, I am a people’s person and I enjoy being involved in growing brands that challenge our country’s expectations when it comes to dining and entertainment. You meet a lot of dynamic and established like-minded individuals with great business ethics and goals. The relationships formed in this industry are competitive yet fun, which keeps me passionate while my work drive is rising. Share with the readers what makes both GBL Group’s outlets unique in comparison to their competitors... Hazel is unlike any other lounge in Bahrain. We aim to promote the local live music scene, by inviting talented artists to our stage several times a week from guitar jams with our resident DJ Eric to a full six-piece band. Also known for our signature cocktails and our conversant mixologists, that have the whole block buzzin’. Every day at Hazel is meant to be a different experience and a fusion of great things including cocktails, food, music, service and an unforgettable friendly crowd. Florence exceptionally merges the taste of the Middle East and the best of the Mediterranean. Florence’s garden was quick to become Adliya’s favourite gathering place. Suitable for families, friends and loved ones wishing to share a great dining experience in our beautifully decorated Mediterranean eatery. Live music is also an essential part of each customer’s experience with our exceptional line-up of live jazz and classic music throughout each week. Dar Zowayed is a traditionally Bahraini eatery with a modern twist, and, is the first of its kind in Adliya. With an oldschool, cosy and familiar atmosphere. What are some of your professional goals for the rest of 2019 with GBL Group? My goal for the rest of the year is highly focused on research and development. That is quintessential to developing new and unique restaurant and nightlife brands that are guaranteed to shake up Bahrain’s entertainment scene. Viola, a Caribbean oasis in the heart of Adliya, is the next exclusive brand to open from GBL Group. Expect some cool new outlets opening (very, very, very) soon near you! ✤

s the elevator door opens on the second floor to Flavours on 2, you are welcomed by the sweet buffet; beautifully structured desserts in every colour and shape. And what’s more tempting than a milk chocolate fountain surrounded with freshly cut cubes of fruit and marshmallow for a never-ending sweetness. I spot the lady entertainer and she is wearing the cutest dress covered with musical notes; what a perfect match! As hungry as I am, I land my bag on the chair and immediately started cruising the buffet attempting to discover what it has to offer. The theme is Lobster & Crabs but the usual corners are still available to satisfy all tastes: two choices of soup, salads of which so many incorporated seafood, lamb roast, sushi, bread and cheese, and the famous Indian corner. And here is the sight I was excited to see; baskets flooding with fresh fish and seafood on both sides of a huge glass tank displaying the biggest, freshest lobster I have ever seen on the island! I decided to skip the soup as I felt a crave for freshness, so, I went picking and choosing from the wide selection of creative salads such as the mango and lobster, compressed watermelon and feta cheese, rocket with pomegranate seeds, and many more. I am back at my table after a few minutes and a welcome drink awaits; I am already appreciating the service! My companion almost started writing poetry on how good the lobster soup was as I enjoyed my big and colourful salad platter. Next, a few pieces of sushi to get us started. Focusing on the highlight of this brunch “the great Canadian lobster”, we made our orders and amused ourselves while waiting with samples of the hot dishes on offer. Too many great choices but mostly with seafood; if I was not so eager to indulge in the huge, juicy, lobster, believe me I would have been easily satisfied by the fantastic vegetable noodles and spicy fish stir fry. Shortly after, seafood goodness started arriving at our table. The first platter was all shrimps: deep fried and grilled with a couple of different sauces to alternate in between and my friend found pleasure in the corn on the cob! Plate number two was grilled Omani lobster topped with melted cheese. Nicely cooked and an apt choice for people who love cheese over everything. Then comes the star of the show: a fill lobster per plate cut in half and grilled to perfection served with lemon and butter sauce – stunning. I would have ordered another one for sure if I was not 84

so full. I could not even try the last platter on the chef’s menu for us: the grilled crab meat with cheese served in the crab’s shell – though my companion said it was something truly special. It’s safe to say that this one is really for all the seafood lovers in town – it’s high quality food and a fantastic ambience. For your next brunch escapade, think Downtown Rotana and the beautiful Bab Al Bahrain location – you won’t regret it. ✤

BLACK TAP: THE FOOD TURN UP

From humble beginnings in Downtown New York City, Black Tap has spread its wings across the globe. After taking in parts of Europe and Asia, as well as a hugely successful joint in Dubai, the venture has finally reached our shores. L

ocated at the Jumeirah Royal Saray Bahrain on the Seef coastline, Black Tap is situated elegantly at the rear of the hotel, overlooking the majestic pool area and the calm waters of the Arabian Gulf. Stepping foot into the restaurant takes you back to the early 90s. The black and white chequered floor and the graffiti clad walls have the semblance of an old school hip hop music video. The décor pays homage to the great American luncheonette experience, a theme that runs through every Black Tap throughout the world. The menu is double sided to make selections that little bit easier; we all know there is nothing worse than cycling through the equivalent of a novel to make our culinary choices. We decided to grab a couple of items off the snacks menu to set our taste buds tingling. We opted for the Teriyaki Broccoli and the Atomic Shrimp. Let me first say that my partner is not the biggest fan of his greens, but he absolutely wolfed down the broccoli, so much so that I was in slight disbelief at what I had just witnessed. I used this as an excuse to devour the shrimp. I think it is safe to say that we were delighted with our starters. We then moved onto the world famous craft burgers. After perusing the menu, we were at such a quandary as to what to order that we had to use the expertise of the waiting staff to assist us in our decision. We were gently nudged towards the award-winning Greg Norman and the aptly titled Mexico City. Possibly Australia’s greatest ever golfer, Greg Norman has since became a hugely successful businessman, with one of his flagship enterprises being his own brand of prime wagyu beef. Black Tap utilises this 350-day grain-fed wagyu to make a truly magnificent burger. A real hole in one! The Mexico City has the kind of spicy kick you would expect but it is the construction of the burger, which is spectacular. Sitting on top of a prime US beef patty is jack cheese which is in turn topped by a huge onion ring, a ring filled with jalapenos and chipotle mayo. If you’re a fan of a spicy burger then this is the one for you. All burgers come with a side of either French fries, sweet potato fries or if you are trying to be good, a house salad. It’s not just burgers that tickle the taste buds; there are other menu options available as well. The Black Tap wings are magnificent. Smothered in spicy Korean BBQ sauce, these wings are melt-in-themouth good. Another choice, a Keto option, would be the tacos which are available in a lettuce wrap to reduce the carb intake. Coming in beef, chorizo or fish, these flavoursome tacos are perfect if you

Whether you are feeling like a unicorn and fancy the Cotton Candy or it’s your birthday and you opt for The Cake Shake, there is a shake to fit every single mood. Having a slice of cake on top of a milkshake is a pretty cool concept. A concept which sums Black Tap up perfectly, willing to push boundaries to make lasting memories. Black Tap does great deals through the week, with happy hour on craft hops running from 5pm to 8pm on Sundays to Wednesday. They also have a large screen which is perfect for Premier League, La Liga and Champions League football as well as all other major sporting events. STEP INTO THE KITCHEN

As a diner, you hardly ever get to come face to face with what’s going on behind the scenes. We all know that the kitchen is a chef’s sanctuary, where they experiment and plate up some of their best work. Now, imagine you could take a loved one and dine right inside the kitchen of CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay? That, our foodie friends, is exactly what FACT’s Layal Al Mahmoud went to experience… fact magazine

I

want to shout it from the rooftops, stop strangers at the mall, and brag about it to every single friend – that’s the kind of dinner experience I’m about to report on. It really is extraordinary news for all the gentlemen, especially, who are searching high and low for an out-of-the-box gift or date night for their one and only love; Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay has come up with the perfect dining-out concept that every partner will admire. The hotel has opened up its professional kitchen at the one and only CUT by Wolfgang Puck for only two to four guests per night. That’s right, your very own one-on-one dinner in an unprecedented, warm and inviting ambience. If there’s one thing I’ve ever been confident about, it’s this: you’ll be served up the most luxurious, celeb-worthy food whilst getting comfortable and catching up with your other half or plus one. But, if you’re anything like me, you’ll spend most of the evening admiring the skills and expertise of the amazing chefs and conversing with them about the dishes – something that they are more than happy to oblige. Choose between a seven-course and five-course menu of great food paired with the most exquisite matching sommelier collection, or if you prefer, work your personalised touch with the executive chef’s magic on a tailored menu to make sure all the dishes are served to your liking. Every menu is designed for each special guest. It is the culinary team’s pleasure to create dishes totally off the restaurant’s menu to match your distinct taste. Even the flower arrangement and drinks can be customised only for your dining experience. You’ll certainly be the topic of conversation for guests dining out in the restaurant, especially as the CUT team treats you like 92

you’re at a reunion with old friends. I step into the restaurant’s reception and the hostess calls me by name asking how I am. She escorts us in the elevator and bids us good evening. After a warm welcome from the restaurant’s manager, we took a seat at the waiting corner where we can have our first drink. Soon, the bar man came with his magical carriage and concocted something special that he has never done before, and he even asked us to give it a name… I'm in awe! We sip our perfect drink with a small amuse bouche and then we move to the kitchen. It is pretty much an open space of constant action. A wide high counter in an L shape surrounds the main space and right there, two high bar chairs are set for us. They’re super comfy and I can’t stop smiling! Bright white tablecloth, a small flower arrangement at the centre in my favourite shades of yellow and orange, and a big welcome from the friendliest staff ever – first impressions are mega.

FOODIE CORNER •

Executive Chef, Brian Becher, walk us through the whole experience, explaining what lies ahead. Seven courses including two desserts; any of which can be changed if not liked and it is up to us to stop at any point. Yay to casual control! And the journey started with an appetiser that perfectly balanced salty verses sweet: Burrata Cheese with roasted figs and duck pastrami – what a combination – it’ll be a real OMG moment with the first bite you take. One after the other, the dishes kept coming, and boy we could eat this meal for an entire month, every single day. Lobster Pasta, Steak, Grilled Fish on Cauliflower Mash, Roasted Bone Marrow with Pulled Beef… every dish has more depth, flavour and gives more satisfaction than its predecessor. I mean, how anyone can say no to a beautiful, delicious meal prepared with the utmost care and served especially for you with love!? I would say yes every time. I can’t even begin describing the well-structured heavenly desserts; thank you Executive Chef Pierre Chambon! It goes without saying that this evening, dining in the CUT kitchen, very easily makes it into the top five meals of my entire life. Perfect and memorable in every way – I couldn’t fault anything. Whether it is or isn’t a special occasion, this is one hidden gem that you need to book right away. ✤

Why Are You Working Out? Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Have you ever really sat down and thought about why you’re really working out? Whenever I meet a new client, I always ask at the consultation stage why are they doing this and what do they want to get out of their change of life journey; and believe it or not, a lot of people don’t have an answer. Some do it because their friend was doing it, or their husband or wife thought it might be a good idea. This is why so many people fail in their health and fitness pursuits and just give up because they aren’t doing it for themselves. Recently a client just stopped in the middle of the session, looked at me and said: “I have to do this Yvonne, I have a child now; I need the energy to be able to run and play with my son, I can’t carry on like this.” I could see this statement really came from the heart as the realisation at that moment hit her that actions have consequences. She realised that all her illnesses were coming from her bad lifestyle choices and if she wanted to see her son grow up and get married, things would have to change. She knows that, ultimately, she must work out for herself but the consequences of that will be a ripple effect, which will spread and affect others around her in a positive way as everything in life is interconnected. ✤
