How You Brewin'?

Take life one coffee cup at a time.

I

f I was going to write a love letter to coffee, it would go something like this… Coffee, you’re the reason I get out of bed most mornings. Your smell, your taste, everything about you is just so brew-tiful. If Idris Elba was a drink, he’d be you. Dark and strong, hot and rich, smooth and sweet, all the reasons why you are the most reliable love affair. I simply must espresso how much you bean to me. You’ve always got my back; making sure I don’t look like a zombie and keeping me wired until the early hours to hit all those pesky deadlines. In fact, you’re here right now. In an oversized tourist mug from Canada. This is my favourite way to consume you. Though I must apologise because, sometimes, I like to have a lie-in and I’m a little latte for our daily meetings. But, coffee, you are the one. I like you in every shape and form – sometimes with extra foam – and I’m overjoyed that you are accessible in so many flavours and sizes, you truly are the best friend that never leaves. You are best enjoyed at your purest but, occasionally, the flat white and cappuccino are worthy stand-ins. What about macchiato you say? No, I would never do you like that. Well, except for Spanish latte, he’s irresistible. Whatever mood I’m in, you’re there to cheer me up with your best shot. Sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet, you are the coolest of all the beans. And I love that I get to share you with my friends, for me, it’s the perfect blend. Coffee, thank you for being a part of my daily grind. You keep me grounded. Though you costa my bank account heartbreak, you’re forever the star and I’ve got the bucks for you, my good friend. Let’s vow to always keep each other happy – it’s a fair trade, don’t you think? I promise to choose you over lesser beverages in an instant. All those other libations are just wannabes; weak and ineffective liquid concoctions. You, coffee, are robust, the gift that keeps on giving, and I am eternally yours. Why so intense? Well, I have never known another place the size of Bahrain that is home to so many of the most incredible coffee hotspots, selling quality drinks and great food. So with a dose of caffeine in the system, I set out to find the best joints in town for an insta-guide to coffee culture in Bahrain. Turn to p27 and begin the journey. Let me know where you like to get your perfect cup of liquid kryptonite, and if I missed any of your favourites! Hospitality is, of course, what it’s all about in Bahrain. There is no other place in the world where I’ve experienced service quite like here. From food to hotels, the high standards carry into all areas of life. So, rest-assured that we've got your monthly fill of dining, arts, culture, foodie deals, exciting events and more happenings in Bahrain. Plus, there's plenty more to discover in our March issue with fashion, beauty, tech, motoring, and news from around the country for the month ahead. For now, I’m on a mission to find the BEST coffee place in Bahrain (there's at least five tied for first place). Until next month; don't worry, be frappe. ☺

Call it a Miracle A MIRACULOUS EXPERIENCE IS COMING TO BAHRAIN THIS MONTH AT THE HAVANA CLUB IN THE JUMEIRAH ROYAL SARAY BAHRAIN. FACT EXPLORES…

I

t’s a small red berry that tastes of very little, ever-so mildly sweet. But it’s not the taste of the berry itself that matters, it’s its ability to make sour foods taste deliciously sweet. Pop a “miracle berry” in your mouth, let it melt on your tongue and swirl it around for about a minute – then let the palate-awakening begin. Your taste buds will now register any sour mouthfuls as sweet ones. Eat lemons and grapefruits as if they were candy – magic. The amazing Havana Club adds the magical berry to their cocktail menu and makes the new flavor-tripping experience now possible in Bahrain. We believe the best way to encounter the berry is in a group, for the berry means fun and fun is rightly shared! Take your friends to the 8

fact magazine

Jumeirah Royal Saray and enjoy a fantastical party together, as any cocktail or mocktail comes with the magical berry and some sour dishes. Can you guess which dish you have in your mouth, when you’re blindfolded after eating a miracle berry? Try it out! Every day from 4pm to closing, for only BD10 net per person including one cocktail or mocktail plus the miraculous berry! Absolutely THE must try for all foodies and curious minds. ✤

NATURE MEETS GASTRONOMY The epicurean community in Bahrain is rejoicing: Nikkei cuisine is making a foray into the country and it offers more than just the usual dining experience. Clay, the newest restaurant concept by Food Fund International (FFI) opened its doors at the funky The Terminal building in Adliya… THE RESTAURANT DOES NOT only satisfy the appetite but also provides an escape, albeit momentarily, from the trappings of modern life. Inviting guests into a cosy environment at the crossroads of nature and ethno-pluralism, the restaurant’s warm and distinctively earthy colour scheme offers the right setting for a relaxed evening. Havelock One Interiors was responsible for creating this new Japanese- Peruvian hotspot, completing the turnkey fit-out and in-house manufacturing of the restaurant’s select pieces of furniture and design features. “We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with FFI’s in-house design team. Their restaurants boast of interior designs and décor that enliven the senses and prepare the palate for the exquisite cuisine they serve,” says Jihad Raad, Division Director, Bespoke Hospitality Manufacturing and Fit-Out in Bahrain at Havelock One. Covering 7,500 sq. ft on the fifth floor of The Terminal building, Clay certainly lives up to similar brand qualities. The restaurant features natural materials, wooden furniture, and the combination of parquet flooring and marble lets guests feel at ease and be grounded in the moment. “Our joinery and upholstery department in Bahrain produced 10

the intricate wood carvings and the tufted banquettes that allow guests to talk comfortably while dining,” adds Raad. The craftsmanship of Havelock One’s glazier and metalworking teams can also be seen in the kitchen and bar countertops, and the doors and windows in textured and tinted glass, offering hypnotic views of the city. A standout feature of the restaurant is a hand-painted ceramic mural depicting traditional Japanese art and a mesmerising ceiling art with hanging clay balls and paper lanterns at the bar area. Havelock One also installed waterproof layers, new steel structure, thermal insulation, sun reflective solar coat paint, complete MEP, foot rail, antique mirror and the aluminium façade. If you happen to visit the restaurant (and you should!), don’t forget to take a few moments to look at Havelock One’s elaborate artisanship. ✤

BIG SCREEN Bloodshot

Highlights

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Bloodshot alias Ray Garrison is a superhuman-soldier who was killed and brought back to life by a group of scientists. Using advanced technology, the scientists transformed him into a human killing machine that is able to heal from injuries quickly and interface with technology. Initially Bloodshot doesn’t remember anything from his former life, but when this changes, he has only one thing in mind: Revenge.

DIRECTOR: Dave Wilson CAST: Vin Diesel, Toby Kebbel, Eiza González, Sam Heughan, Guy Pearce

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Based on the bestselling comic book, this upcoming American superhero movie is set to make its big screen debut in March and promises us 100+ minutes of action at its finest. It’s none other than Vin Diesel who brings the comic character Bloodshot to life ― and this alone guarantees a movie worth watching. When elite-solider Ray Garrison and his wife get killed, a group of scientists bring Ray back to life, stronger than ever before. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s now an unstoppable human killing machine. But to be able to control him, the scientists have deleted Ray’s memories completely. When Ray regains the memories of his old life, he hunts down the man who killed him and his wife, and uncovers a larger conspiracy. As Valiant comics’ first movie, Bloodshot will be something very different compared to Marvel or DC movies and promises all superhero fans a new character to celebrate.

My Spy

As Valiant comics’ first movie, Bloodshot will be something very different compared to Marvel or DC movies and promises all superhero fans a new character to celebrate. – Bloodshot

The tough CIA agent JJ gets demoted and assigned to surveil a family’s home. But nine-year-old Sophie spots the cameras in her apartment and manages to follow the clues to JJ’s hideout. She makes a deal with him: she won’t blow his cover if he teaches her how to be a spy.

DIRECTOR: Peter Segal CAST: Dave Bautista, Kristen Schaal, Chloe Coleman

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Packed with different tones and genres, My Spy is a movie that adults AND kids will enjoy to the fullest. Entertainment specialist Peter Segal, whose career has to date brought him within sniffing distance at the Oscars, created a formulaic yet eccentric family action-comedy. His star in My Spy is the former Wrester, Bautista, who’s in the role of the CIA agent JJ. It seems like Bautista is picking up the reins from Dwayne Johnson as the lovable tough guy with a heart of gold and we love how his character develops over the story from the tough guy to the caring one. With plenty of laugh out loud moments, expect some rude humor, crude jokes, and dangerous explosions, gunfire and fist fights.

Changes

Supervision

By Justin Bieber After a musical hiatus of four years, Justin Bieber’s latest album Changes was released on Valentine’s Day and while we can consider it as a present to all the ‘Beliebers’ out there, we can also be sure about it being a Valentine’s present for his wife Hailey, as the album is all about Justin’s love for her. Talking about his marriage with Hailey, the lyrics of all 17 tracks give an insight into the superstar’s matured and emotional psyche, and the personal growth that he has experienced over the last few years. Especially Intentions, featuring Quavo, which serves the many praises of Hailey and proclaims Justin’s intentions to marry her. He compliments her looks, her kindness, her cooking, and her parents for the way that she was raised. While Intentions has a romantic vibe, Yummy is more fun and funkier and has definitely taken over the radio waves. So, whether you’re looking for a melodic backdrop to an intimate dinner or you’re just wanting to shake your hips on the dance floor, there’s really something for everyone on Changes. Guest appearances include Post Malone, Travis Scott, Kehlani and more, and we couldn’t agree more with Bieber, when he said that this is the music he loves the most out of anything he’s created to date.

By La Roux

The Grammy-winning and BRIT and Mercury-Prize nominated artist who gained worldwide fame with her debut album is back on the scene. After the generation-defining hits ‘In For the Kill’ and ‘Bulletproof’, La Roux releases her third album Supervision and delivers, once again, a throwback to a retro 80’s world - one that we find ourselves rather fond of. The Album highlight is Do You Feel, a track that reminds us of Janet Jackson’s 1986 smash hit record ‘Control’. Automatic Driver has a sweet and poppy beat and International Woman of Leisure is reminiscent of ‘Bulletproof’, with icy vocal tones and stabbing synth beats. In general, Supervision is a bit samey and repetitive compared to La Roux’s second album ‘Trouble In Paradise’, but she has still created something remindful of an era of music that we truly love whilst her unique overall sound remains intact and that’s why we love it!

As Vesta walks through the forest, she stumbles upon a handwritten note that says, “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body”. Determined to figure out the murder, Vesta searches for answers that eventually lead her to more questions. A novel that serves a truly twisted reality, suspense and dark humour.

NON- FICTION

You’re not listening: What you’re missing and why it matters By Kate Murphy The process of true listening these days is undoubtedly forgotten. How do we feel when we leave a conversation feeling like the person wasn’t paying attention or didn’t care? How do we feel when we leave a conversation feeling like the person genuinely absorbed what we shared with them? Kate Murphy lays out why listening to each other is the key to truly connecting with someone. An impactful and meaningful book that can renovate our conversations and relationships for the better.

HOSPITALITY FIRST AS THE NEW COMPLEX GENERAL MANAGER OF THE WESTIN CITY CENTRE BAHRAIN AND LE MERIDIEN CITY CENTRE BAHRAIN, HOTEL VETERAN SAMMY GANI TALKS TO FACT ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR TWO OF THE COUNTRY’S TOP HOTELS… 60

fact magazine

HOSPITALITY Q&A •

Congratulations on your new role as General Manager. Both The Westin and Le Meridien have become such iconic brands in Bahrain. What’s your vision for the complex during your management? I hope to further excel the reputation of both hotels with the aim of taking two great brands and making them even better. What have been your first impressions of Bahrain and its hospitality market? People make the place! I have seen nothing but amazing hospitality from the people of Bahrain, whether it is Bahrainis or the expats that have made Bahrain their home. Tell us a little more about your hospitality background and what led you to this current position… I started my career 24 years ago in Long Beach California USA at The Westin Long Beach. I have moved nine times within the company and my career has taken me to five different states including the Caribbean. My first Middle East post was in 2013 as Executive Assistant Manager for Sheraton Mall of the Emirates, followed by the launch of the Aloft brand in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Aloft Riyadh in 2015 as General Manager. My last role was as opening General Manager for the Aloft City Centre Deira. My ninth move in August 2019 fact magazine

has brought me to Bahrain as Complex General Manager for The Westin and Le Meridien City Centre Bahrain. Tell us some of the ways in which you keep morale and motivation high - what’s your approach to making sure that people are happy and on the same page every day? I always remember a training I attended years back about the Human Truths. We all want to have a sense of belonging, we want to be in control of our lives and decisions we make, we want to be understood, we strive to reach our potential, and we all want to feel special. Balancing all these elements effectively with the team is something I strive for daily. The responsibilities of General Manager could get overwhelming at times. How do you manage your time, expectations and the need for attention to detail? I believe the lucky General Managers are the ones who are blessed with effective and experienced team members. The great thing about the complex is that I am fortunate enough to have inherited a really great team. Describe your day-to-day role and working style - are you the type of GM who does things from his office, or do you prefer to walk around the hotels and be more hands-on and interactive with staff and guests? I can never get away from the office work no matter how hard I try. I prefer the walk around which gives me an opportunity to keep my hand on the pulse of the operation. The best part 62

is talking to associates and guests, it’s kind of boring if you did it from the office. Do you have a message for your guests – why should they choose either of these two Marriott properties as their hotel of choice when visiting Bahrain? Three things: 1. Location, 2. Lifestyle Brands, 3. Unique Offerings. I can tell you a story of a guest who recently stayed with us and has experienced both brands. She travels extensively around the world and is a frequent customer of the complex. Her statement resonated with me. “You can’t beat the convenience of being attached to the City Centre mall, a short drive from the airport, and easy to get anywhere in Bahrain.” Le Meridien offers guests a chance to unlock the destination through the local art inspirations. Westin lives up to the promise of wellness in travel, and to top it all off the enhancements of adding Salero, an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant, and Nasmat shisha and sports lounge by the pool, even if I was a guest, I would not stay anywhere else. Do you have a philosophy that you use to approach work? Everything is possible, and “One hundred per cent responsibility, and zero excuses”. Have you got any advice for young people in the hospitality industry who would like to work their way up the ladder? When I started my career as a front desk agent, I always carried a philosophy that I wanted to be the best at any job I held; the best front desk agent, the best supervisor, the best

manager, the best leader. So, my advice would be no matter what job you hold - even if it is a stepping stone to achieve your ultimate dream job - strive to be the best at what you do. Finally, share with us some of your goals that you wish to make a mark with at the hotel in 2020… We’ve got a lot of projects on the way this year, all scheduled for Q2 of 2020. Our new Spanish Restaurant “Salero Tapas & Bodega” alongside our Westin guest rooms refurbishment and Nasmat Sports Lounge and Shisha located at the 3rd floor of The Westin City Centre Bahrain. ✤

V

olvo is a globally trusted vehicle manufacturer, highly renowned for its intuitive design and immaculate safety record. Founded in 1927, the brand has gained huge popularity over the decades with 642, 253 cars being sold in around 100 countries, in 2018 alone. With an ever-improving array of models being produced, this label is sure to keep attracting fans for many years to come. This month, the fact magazine team were delighted to test drive Volvo’s new mid-sized premium sedan, the 2020 S60 R, compliments of Motorcity. The overall exterior design of the S60 R is definitely an improvement on the previous generation. It exudes an athletic dynamism, combining refinement, high-end materials and clean, shapely lines. The high gloss black, R-Design grille with horizontal mesh adds to the car’s already appealing presence, whilst Thor’s hammer headlights add a further attractive touch to the front end. The 19-inch, five-spoke, matt black, diamond cut, alloy wheels look superb and augments the vehicle’s already distinguished appearance. The rear spoiler may be small, but it enhances the elegance and sporty demeanour of the S60 R and looks particularly good from a side view. Entering the vehicle, we were greeted by comfortable contour seats and fine Nappa leather upholstery. The designers have taken a classic Scandinavian minimalistic approach without leaving the driver wanting for anything. Metal mesh aluminium inlays can be found throughout the interior and all materials have a premium feel to them. There is enough space in the rear to seat three people with class leading legroom and ample headroom on offer. The boot provides 442-litres of space, with its wide design allowing for the easy loading of large items. The infotainment system is fast, responsive and user-friendly and includes a 9-inch, upright screen that is both well placed and reactive to voice commands. This tablet-style touch screen interface combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment apps. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G. It is also one of the few systems where you can access other features whilst CarPlay is open. Our 2020 Volvo S60 R came with the T5 AWD, four-cylinder, direct injection, turbo petrol engine, complete with an eightspeed Geartronic™ automatic transmission. This capable engine produces 250 hp (183 kW) and 350 Nm of torque. This enables the S60 R to race from 0 - 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds as well as to generate a top speed of 240 km/h. The power on offer always seemed instantly accessible whilst the smooth gearbox provided perfect shift points. This car with its lowered chassis, hugs the road well and inspires confidence in the driver. These features combined with the breaking abilities of this model make the S60 R extremely fun to drive. As you would expect from a Volvo, the safety features included are impressive and extensive. These include Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Distance Alert, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, City Safety with Steering Support, Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control, Electronic Stability Control, Brakes with Hill Start Assist & Automatic Hold, automatic breaking

after collision, a safety cage in high-strength steel, the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS™), a collapsible steering column, side airbags, dual-stage airbags for both the driver and front passenger, head restraints, the Whiplash Injury Protection System (WHIPS™), protective front seats with energy absorbing seat structure as well as an energy absorbing interior. These, along with others, including child-specific safety features, may also be inlcluded on the S60 R. The mid-size premium sports sedan segment seems to house some rather stiff competition these days, with several established brands producing models, all contending for the consuming public’s attention. Volvo however has managed to distinguish itself and generate interest in its offerings with its continuous design upgrades, unwavering dedication to the advancement of its safety features, as well as its everreasonable price tag. We strongly recommend that anyone looking to purchase a capable and classy compact sedan, book a test drive at Motorcity, to experience for themselves, what the S60 R has to offer. ✤

FEELS LIKE NIRVANA FACT’s Elanur Sengel visist the masters of Indian cuisine located in The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain. She takes a seat at Nirvana and can’t get over the food – this isn’t your regular butter chicken, as she finds out with every bite… fact magazine

83

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

A

s we enter Nirvana, we are welcomed by smiling staff and an elegant fine dining setting. With beautiful arches, intricately carved wood screens and jewel-toned fabrics, the interior is designed to provide a royal atmosphere, pertinent to the royal flavours that are about to grace our taste buds. And while we watch Chef Mahipal in the open kitchen preparing our plates, we lose ourselves in the splendid traditional music of the two talented and enthusiastic musicians. Our Indian adventure begins with tandoor-made Dum Ki Kebab— skewered minced lamb kebab spiked with fresh and flavourful herbs. There is no end in sight when it comes to the taste of the soft meat, but we continue (to not be unfair to all the other worthy dishes) with the Erha Kari— crispy gulf prawns simmered in the creamiest coconut curry, tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Yum! Nirvana’s immensely popular Murgi Makhanwali is our next star of the show and fulfills our food dreams with its boneless pieces of tandoori cooked chicken, coated in a rich tomato buttery gravy – a definite winner at the table. We wash down the spices with a velvety mango lassi and continue with two plates that are SO delicious that they easily tie for the title of the best dish at Nirvana (in our opinion that is): Butter Chicken and the Lamb Biryani.. Both are special by being tastefully distinct without losing the integrity of the original ingredients of Indian cuisine. You can’t have enough of this, ever! And while it is very hard to describe the divinity of the Biryani, we still put the Butter Chicken on the very top, for this one isn’t your regular butter chicken. This dish is out-of-the-worldtasty. The chicken sits in the silkiest, creamiest sauce which we can’t express the delectable aromas of. Let’s just say, you would forget your name and cry and beg for more! The fluffy and fragrant rice it comes with is so good, you can easily eat it alone without anything (but all you really need to know is it’s an exceptional accompaniment to an exceptional butter chicken). As we think that after THIS butter chicken nothing else can impress us anymore, the Dal Makhani follows on the table and proves us wrong. We are enjoying perfectly cooked black lentils and red beans, simmered overnight over charcoal with tomatoes and spices, finished with a luscious dollop of home-made churned butter. An impressive taste it is. And because dessert makes everything even better, we’re not saying no to our final round: the Kulfi. This traditional pistachio flavoured ice cream comes with pristine vermicelli falooda on top and is dressed with delicious rose syrup. A combination you will crave again, and again. One of the best ways to get a taste of what Nirvana has to offer is with their divine Thali experience; nine plates filled with different flavours of Indian cuisine to combine the way your taste buds want it — this Thali experience is nothing less than a grand feast. Nirvana serves you its thali experience now for lunch and also dinner at only BD18 including two selected drinks. 84

The brunch showcases the way in which the team employs top notch ingredients and extant technique to produce a variety of steamed buns, pan fried oriental classics and noodle dishes perfect for diners wanting to sample an array of delights for an impeccable day out. The dishes were both innovative and surprising, and the meal can be likened to that of an artistic performance. We genuinely tingled with anticipation. As we sipped on our handcrafted muddled mocktails we were presented with wagyu beef Potstickers that danced alongside black vinegar and chilli oil to provide the perfect unity. The Crispy ‘Salt and Pepper’ Squid with red Thai curry sauce had us but quite literally ‘digging-in’ to the moreish spectacle that befell us. Hand-Cut Chow Fun ‘Crazy Noodles’ seasoned with Hon Shimeji, Thai chillies and black pepper was served and it proved itself as nothing short of exceptional! Their Thai Style Wagyu Short Rib, known for its tender texture, is a true taste sensation. The Mr and I devoured every final morsel as we smacked our lips and refrained from licking the dishes further. There is nothing ‘typical’ when it comes to this gastronomic hub - you’re forever guaranteed a fabulous meal no matter the occasion. There’s a real delight in the honest and unpretentious dishes that are served by their knowledgeable staff. A fusion of flavours further met with my taste buds as we were introduced to the Chicken Yakitori served as a quintet of skewers. Growing-up with a Mother who is a chef has definitely allowed for an appreciation to high quality ingredients and fresh produce over the years; something that unfortunately is a bit, well, hit-and-miss across the culinary scene in Bahrain… 88

t’s no secret that the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is well ahead in the food game. As one of the most iconic dining destinations on the island, here is where you’ll find merry crowds of family and friends gathering to celebrate their love of good food, entertainment and, of course, great service. After a long hard week at work, there’s no better place to take a seat and ring in the weekend! Be sure to skip breakfast and save yourself for the Mövenpick’s extensive variety of food (one of the largest offerings in Bahrain) spread across The Gallery Lobby Lounge and Silk’s Restaurant – both of which have had an extensive makeover during the hotel’s stunning renovations. Walking into Silk’s Restaurant is like walking into a European manor house in the countryside – it’s laid-back, sophisticated and absolutely stunning. There is an entire forest wall which adds a woodlands vibe to the eatery, which stretches into a bright conservatory with cosy seating. It feels intimate yet inviting. The Gallery Lobby Lounge is accentuated by beautifully-placed indoor plants and an aviary-inspired lounge, there is a real greenhouse feel where the sun shining in through the tall glass windows gives the illusion of being under the open skies. Already, the whole set up feels more open and fresher. Lo’ and behold, the food is a mighty spread of varied delicacies that we can’t wait to indulge in. Word of advice: skip breakfast if you’re coming for brunch here. Bringing some of the finest global gastronomic delights right to your table, the mouth-watering multiple buffets and live cooking stations will set your taste buds on a tantalising journey. Is Ergonomics Important?

Enough is Enough! Time For Change...

Pearl Wasif is an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner. She aims to provide evidencebased management to relieve pain and restore function and movement.

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

The purpose of ergonomics is to make sure that work tasks, equipment used, information and the environment suit each employee in order to maintain health and safety standards. Why is Ergonomics Important? Ergonomics can roughly be defined as the study of the worker in their working environment. Workplace setup and practices can vary on an individual basis and that is why an ergonomic assessment for every individual worker is important. The goal is to eliminate discomfort and risk of injury due to work. In other words, the employee is the first priority in analyzing a workstation. A few tips that you can put into practice straight away to help improve your ergonomics. This obviously depends on your environment. Let’s take a desk-based worker. We recommend people have a good lumbar support. We also recommend that people have their monitor top at approximately eye level. Everything also needs to be symmetrical. We generally work on a rule of 90 degrees. Elbows 90 degrees, knee’s 90 degrees. Try to implement these steps to ensure you are sitting in good posture. However, last point, and probably the most important. Move as much as you can! Do not sit in the same position for more than 30 minutes at a time. Movement is key as we are not built to sustain any position for too long! ✤

How tired do you have to be? How tired do you have to be before you say, “enough is enough”? How tired do you have to be for you to realise that if you don’t start putting things into motion your life will NOT change and you will stay in your unhappy state? Continuously complaining about your life is meaningless; the only person that can change it is you. Sit down and have a good hard look at yourself and don’t just tell yourself you’re going to make changes, actually do it; start putting things into motion and act upon them. If you’re prediabetic and you know that exercise and a change of diet will change your life for the better DO IT. If you’re unhappy in your job CHANGE IT. If you’re unhappy with your body find a Personal Trainer, take up Pilates, Boxing, Pole Dancing or join a running club but stop complaining about the state of your life if you haven’t taken any steps to change it. The worst thing you can do is sit back and see people pass you by as they decided to take a chance. It can be scary starting a new chapter in your life and age is not a factor, but if you don’t at least try you will never know what could be. So, once again I ask “How tired do you have to be before you say, “enough is enough”? ✤

irst up, in case you’re wondering what Cryotherapy is – let me break it down. It is actually not a new practice. If you’ve ever applied ice to an injury, congrats – you’ve employed cryotherapy without even knowing it! That being said, Cryotherapy is an intense form of cold therapy, but for the whole body! In the whole-body cryotherapy you walk into a chamber that exposes your body to extreme temperatures (up to -140 °C) for a few minutes. The list of benefits from the therapy runs long - from better sleep; collagen stimulation and cellular regeneration; weight-loss; pain relief to treating muscle soreness and reducing inflammation, up to more energy and a better mood, and some even claim cellulite reduction. Knowing all these benefits, it’s easy to understand why even celebrities like Will Smith, Jennifer Aniston, and Mandy Moore take a step into the freezer. How a few minutes in the °CRYO chamber can make all these nice benefits possible? Well, cryotherapy works to reduce the body’s temperature evenly with dry cold, which can achieve a significant reduction in inflammation, and a decrease in cortisol in only a few minutes. Yes, you are only a few minutes away from slimming, or even getting an energy boost – how cool is that? (pun intended!). Arriving at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, I walk into the °CRYO to hop in their beautifying chamber. Also, on the menu: cryo facials. Not knowing if I can stand the subzero temperatures on my whole body, I’m saving the chamber-experience for

last and begin with the glow facial. The glow facial is all about activating the collagen production in the deeper levels of your skin, increasing its capacity to rejuvenate itself and regain elasticity, to bring forth the glow you want. I lie back on a couch in the bright-white treatment room and brace myself for the cold. A nice lady from the cryo team places a warm towel over my body and as soon as that happens the treatment starts! Following a quick cleanse, cryogenically cooled air strokes my cheeks. First, it’s a nice cold breeze, but after only a minute the chill gets more intense— not in a painful way, but quite strong it is. I brave the cold for 10 minutes and soon enough, it’s over. “Is everything fine?” the nice lady from the cryo team asks. I nod my head yes, a little frozen, yet excited for the next facial¬— the energising light therapy. Especially the combination of the cold glow facial and the warm red light is supposed to bring great results as the mix of cold and warm stimulate the skin even more. Now baking under the heat lamp, wearing eye protecting shades, I feel a bit like in the solarium. I feel great, relaxed. After 15 minutes of baking I touch my face and sure enough, everything feels tighter. Wow, wait! That fast?! I’m looking in the mirror and kind of can’t believe how fast the results show up. My face appears brighter and fresher, and my cheeks look beautifully plump and pillowy. The sweet lady from the cryo team tells me that these results will look even greater in the coming 10 days and that’s something I love to hear. Apart from the beautifying effect, I also feel energised and ready for more: the wholebody treatment. I head to the chamber and remove all metal jewellery. I also put socks and booties on to protect my feet, as well as gloves and the cryo underwear. Ready for the tundra! “You will feel great after this! It will give you a jolt of energy!” the cryo team tells me. Alright then, I want that. I step into the chamber and as soon as the door closes the three minute-tundra already begins. Smoke from the liquid nitrogen starts pumping out and hey, it was freezing cold… but totally bearable. ‘Freed from desire’ starts to play and motivates me to start dancing in the chamber, and that’s what’s needed when being put into a -140°C chamber. It is really, really cold. Finishing the mix of dancing and freezing for three minutes, the music stops and the machine shuts off, and I briskly walk my freezing thighs over to a seat. After shaking off the cold feels, I became an espresso cup myself. I don’t remember having that much energy in ages! I feel awake, charged - like I just woke up from a deep sleep in some kind of faraway glacial land. The following days, the results just seem to get better, and even my loved ones would continuously compliment my complexion. It’s safe to say, I find myself longing to feel the big chill again - and sooner rather than later. ✤
