I
can hardly believe that it’s already time for Ramadan. May will mark the start of the Holy Month when Muslims all over the world observe fast from surise to sunset. As I try and get ready for my own Ramadan journey with changing my sleeping pattern, eating consciously and general mental prep for the 30 days of fasting, I’m learning more and more that this special time is one of celebration, reflection and, most of all, sharing and giving. With that said, I’m constantly appreciative for calling the Gulf home, where Ramadan is the most spiritual and beautiful occasion of coming together with family, friends and neighbours to be thankful for all the great things we have in life. And if you keep up with me on instagram, you’ll see that food is absolutely on top of my list of things to be grateful for, so isn’t it a coincidence that some of the best dining experiences, whether at home or in a restaurant, are served up in Ramadan? The delicious spread at the end of the day is really the most humbling part for someone who fasts - and a lovely feast for those who are joining in the festivities for a taste of what it’s all about. Turn to p25 for Ramadan 101, our extensive round up of Bahrain’s top tents, iftars, and ghabgas to check out from mid-May onwards. Tag us (@factmagazine) on instagram when you’re posting from any of the gorgeous offerings - we’d love to see where our recommendations have taken you! If our cover is the reason you picked up this issue of FACT, look no further than the mystical talent of Amina Ayubova, a Bahrain-based artist whose creative talents take all sorts of amazing forms. I caught up with the lovely lady herself to talk tools and techniques, the local art scene and what keeps her so transfixed to keep sketching and painting (p47). Though I’ll do my best to behave with bad eating habits before (and during) Ramadan, I can’t promise that I won’t be on the hunt for the best Kunafa in town. If you think you’ve found it, just holler. Wishing all of our readers who are celebrating, Ramadan Kareem. See you next month to talk Eid escapes, World Cup and more...☺

ELEVATED LUXURY DINING Mahonia is Bahrain’s first fine dining degustation restaurant, redefining gastronomic brilliance with its exceptional menu. MAHONIA, BAHRAIN’S FIRST EVER fine dining degustation restaurant, has opened in Adliya. Mahonia leads the way to a new era of fine dining with its gastronomic degustation menu concept, distinctively different from anything else in Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf. Daringly exclusive with only seven tables, three times Michelin-starred Executive Chef Herve Pronzato spent over a year developing the menu, meticulously designing and perfecting Mahonia’s offering. The restaurant delivers an authentic epicurean journey with a choice of a 16-course or 7-course degustation menu with exclusive beverage pairings. In addition, an exquisitely planned à la carte menu will be soon introduced, increasing the choice of delectable dishes available for the food connoisseurs. Owner, Sawsan Baluch, explains her inspiration for Mahonia: “During my culinary travels in Europe and elsewhere, I realised that Bahrain is missing a true degustation restaurant. “I also realised that Bahrain is not short of appreciative gourmet lovers wanting to expand their palates, but there was no place for them in the kingdom. I was driven to change that and introduce true gastronomy to Bahrain by creating Mahonia,” she says. Chef Herve’s brigade of 40 chefs create each dish as if it were a priceless work of art. Perfectly presented in imaginative tableware, each dish is prepared with the best ingredients utilising the finest European gastronomic techniques. With impeccable service standards, Mahonia’s hand-picked service 10

team and skilled sommeliers complete the sophisticated culinary journey. The restaurant uses only the finest produce from around the world, from Japanese Kobe beef to French quail eggs, with no expense spared sourcing the best, rarest and most special ingredients. Mahonia prepares many ingredients in-house, from cured and smoked meats to cheeses, butters, breads and even micro-greens, consistently ensuring the finest quality and taste. Mahonia also has a magnificent cigar lounge that offers an enviable array of special cigars to accompany the finest beverages selected by the expert sommeliers. A first-class assortment of gastronomic snacks delicately designed to complement Mahonia’s cocktails, graceful and tiny, yet explosive in flavour and complexity, feature on the menu of the lounge. Introducing a new level of epicurean exclusivity to sophisticated and discerning gourmet lovers, Mahonia offers a carefully orchestrated culinary experience in the haven of its luxurious premises. It’s the perfect setting for intimate dinners and celebrating special occasions, leaving diners with unforgettable memories. ✤

CULTURAL HAPPENINGS All the cool events organised and hosted by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities… WHAT: Al Fann, Art from the Islamic Civilization from the AlSabah Collection, Kuwait WHEN: Ongoing – June 30 TIME: 8am to 8pm WHERE: Bahrain National Museum The exhibition introduces the public to the great and multifaceted nature of Islamic culture through the spectacular al-Sabah collection of Islamic Art. Broadly divided into two parts, the display illustrates a chronological progression broken into four stages (from the very beginnings of the Islamic period up to and including the three great empires of the sixteenth century) and tackles themes that run transversely through Islamic art; mainly, calligraphy, geometric decoration, arabesque and figurative art and Jewellery. WHAT: The Stamp Seal: Hallmark of Dilmun and its Hidden Art WHEN: Ongoing - 20 September 2018 TIME: 8am - 8pm WHERE: Bahrain National Museum Seals were a main administrative tool used to regulate trade and organise society. Hardly bigger than few centimetres, they were used on official documents, tags attached to goods and on buildings gates to certify authenticity and ownership. In addition to their main administrative function, the seals might have had some metaphysical connotations. With a shape and iconography unusual to the Near East, the Dilmun seals illustrate more than any other category of artefacts, the most original material representation of the Dilmun culture and its only surviving art. 'The Stamp Seals: Hallmark of Dilmun and its Hidden Art’ draws on the permanent collection of the Bahrain National Museum and some highlights from the National Museum of Kuwait. The display illustrates an exceptional selection of seals spanning the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE and examines the use, techniques, diversity and splendour of the Dilmun seals. WHAT: International Museum Day WHEN: MAY 18 WHERE: Bahrain National Museum Launched by ICOM in 1975, International Museum Day is held every year on May 18 to promote the role of museums around the world, creating unique, enjoyable and free activities around a specific theme that changes every year and that is at the heart of the international museum community’s preoccupations. It provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them as to the challenges that museum face. In 20

T
he artistic talent in Bahrain continues to blow us away. In every corner of this beautiful island, you’ll find artists and dreamers living out their passion, either on a canvas in a gallery, on the street walls around cool neighbourhoods or in the comfort of their own homes in a sketch book. Wherever the creative flow takes them, they go. One such individual who has been making a mark in the local art scene is 26-year-old Amina Ayubova. Having recently showcased some of her work at events like Bahrain Comic Con, the versatile artist is proof that you don’t need to be constrained to one type of artistic discipline in order to share your skills with the viewer. ““I do not stick to one style,” Amina explains. “Imagine going to the amusement park and only riding on the Ferris wheel, it's certainly amusing, but on the fifth time it will turn into a routine and become boring. “My style is riding the Ferris wheel then the rollercoaster and so on. If you happen to see a bunch of my works, you wouldn’t guess they were all mine,” she continues. “Recently, I’ve been trying out linear illustrations in a mixture with watercolour sketches.” As Amina transcends her abilities between different art mediums, she shares with us some of the tools and techniques of her trade. “I like to experiment with techniques and material,” she says. “Recently, I discovered the delights of ultraviolet paints and how the picture changes under different lighting. But, the main materials in my studio are watercolour, oil paints, ink, ultraviolet paints and acrylic.

“Though I must say, 90 per cent of the materials I bring are from different countries, most often from Russia,” Amina adds. “For me, it’s like food, I use watercolour when I feel like something light, ink is like coffee, acrylic is like lunch with friends and oil painting I like an amazing family dinner but you should clean the dishes afterwards. And that’s why I always mix them!” We’re surely falling in love with Amina’s metaphorical explanations of her artistic journey, and it’s no wonder that she has such strong connotations to refer to having grown up in the Southeastern Russian territory of Dagestan. Amina recalls what ignited her interest in art: “I started doing art in high school and because I was interested in psychology, and in particular tests where you give a child the task to draw their family. By this, one would have an indication about what kind of a relationship reigns between the parents and the child. “Having done dozens of these tests on my friends, I began to understand how our subconscious mind affects the final result of the picture,” Amina explains. “Not so long after, I decided to go even deeper into art; having picked up the paint brush, I could not let it go again.” Years of hard studying at the University of Moscow Academy of Art followed. Amina remembers getting just three to four hours of sleep per day and sometimes not sleeping at all – a routine that went on for five years. “It got to the point where if I were to be woken up in the middle of the night and asked about the art of ancient Mesopotamia, and to sketch the figure and talk about the human anatomy, I would be able to do it all at once with my eyes closed,” she says.

But all this was preparation and training, as Amina’s REAL experience with art began when she started travelling. As she roamed the globe, her artistic frustrations eased and she found inspiration in different people, cultures, nature and dialects. Having accumulated so many wonderful experiences throughout her journeys, Amina decided that she needed to take a breather, and so she came to Bahrain during Ramadan 2017 and began to transfer all the emotions and knowledge etched into her being onto canvas and paper. Even when we first came across Amina’s work, we couldn’t really describe it under one umbrella. So, we’re intrigued to know how she feels when creating her sketches and paintings. “You know when you meet with a close friend and you tell each other everything, from the most interesting and intimate stuff that happened to you, to all of the events and thoughts, failures and successes?,” Amina says. “You are waiting for this moment, waiting for this meeting and want to share your world and your universe. I feel the same when I sketch pictures, I tell you my story.” 40

Having been in Bahrain for a year now, Amina believes that the island’s art scene is an inspiring one. She says: “One of the main reasons why I decided to stay in Bahrain is the people here who genuinely love art and are engaged in its different manifestations. I am inspired by the people who carry an interest in the world around them. For example, I have never seen so many people sign petitions to arrange live concerts in order to save the gallery Al Riwaq, even though the gallery could not keep its house,” she continues. “But people made its closure a kind of a masterpiece. The community here is very gallant. I never thought I could draw in public either, but I feel so comfortable here that wherever I draw, I feel that this is where I should be and do what I do.” Amina admits that it’s hard for her to explain the meanings behind her work simply because she doesn’t want to restrict the viewer’s own perceptions. “It's hard for me to explain my message in the picture, because the picture itself is the message,” she says. “And everyone will see it through the prism of their experience and perception. I do not want and cannot label my own pictures. Each person can change the message and perception; if today for you it's just lines, then tomorrow you can see space and time.” Some would say that Amina is truly discovering her own style and identity, producing art in her prime. So, what’s her advise for young, budding creatives? 42

“I want to say that it is not easy,” she admits. “Art is not to sit in Starbucks and draw amazing works. Art is a night without sleep, art is an eternal dissatisfaction with the final result, art is a struggle with yourself, and if all this does not scare you, but rather fascinates you, then draw every day, even if there is no inspiration, even if there is no idea. just start and everything will come by itself,” she adds. “Skill is honed by time.” There are some cool things in the pipeline that Amina is working on, for example, if finances permit, an art space in which all kinds of art, music, games, conversations, films and fine art will be combined; a home of art for all residents of Bahrain. “I want it to be a place where people can get acquainted with others who share similar interests and know that they are always welcome there,” Amina says. “To be accurate, I dream of creating a space in which I would be happy and where many other people will share the same happiness.” And on that note, we’ll leave you to follow Amina’s rise and grind motivation, all the way to the top! ✤ 44

Dirty Computer
By Janelle Monae
A scintillating amalgamation of synthladen soul, rubbery funk and sugary R&B, Janelle Monae is a true musical treasure. Adding a distinct festive Southern bounce to the music scene, Monae has successfully secured her position as a true icon in music, fashion and film. Her fourth album and first “emotion picture”, Dirty Computer is an artistic progression we have been so excited to witness. Deep, personal and straight from the heart, the album sheds light on Monae’s story like never before. Evoking the style and flair of Kiss, Make Me Feel might be the strongest Prince tribute we’ve heard since his death. Packing a ton of 1980s nostalgia, the liberated jam carries a feeling of raw sensual energy all throughout the song. With personal liberation as the key theme of the album, it is all about the celebration of one’s self as well as strength and unity. A diss record aimed at haters, Django Jane is a bold step away from her previous work. The perfect balance of grace and reverence, Dirty Computer is definitely one of our favourite records of the year!
Electric Light By James Bay
James Bay’s stellar rise to pop stardom has been the subject of fascination for fans and critics alike. Attempting a major creative reinvention, Bay embraces electronic beats and woozy atmospherics while citing Prince and Frank Ocean as his inspirations. A world away from his signature guitar driven sound, Wild Love sees the Hitchin-born singer-songwriter experiment with warped synths and subtle guitar lines. Combining carnality and gospel music, the futuristic track takes his sound to a new place. Armed with a brand new image and sound, this audacious change of direction marks a significant turning point in the singer’s musical journey. Pink Lemonade continues his bold transformation with pulsating rock breakup ballad you need to soothe your lovelorn heart! Playing with different styles of production of delivery, James Bay offers a new and improved sound while still sticking close to his roots. We can hardly wait for what’s next!
Chronicling the rise of the female show runner, this book is about how the role of women has radically transformed the television industry. From Shonda Rhimes and Lena Dunham to Tina Fey and Mindy Kaling, the Press examines how these extraordinary women have revolutionised the entertainment landscape.

• HOSPITALITY Q&A
The Gulf Hotel Bahrain is the country’s longest-standing 5-star hotel with so much to offer guests. What’s your vision for the hotel during your management? Gulf Hotel has built an excellent reputation; across the years it was known as the first five-star hotel operation and its F&B operation led the market for many years. Today, with the opening of international players in the market and many restaurants in Bahrain, the challenge is getting bigger, so we need to maintain our position and reputation by being innovative and creative to keep attracting the young crowd. Give us a snapshot of your industry experience over the years, which has helped you prepare for this job? After graduating from the Swiss hotel management school Les Roches I’ve been moving between Spain, UK, Canada, and Lebanon where I worked with several hotel chains including Melia, IHG, Metropolitan, Habtoor Grand, and currently the Hilton where I was a part of the opening team of two hotels and a theme park. That was just before landing in Bahrain in 2007 to join The Gulf Hotel for four years. I later joined Accor Hotels and took the challenge to be part of the opening team of Sofitel Zallaq as a hotel manager for two and a half years before joining Sofitel Al Khobar as General manager for the last five years. How do you keep yourself challenged and continuously ahead in the competitive hospitality field? In the hospitality industry you need to be innovative and keep your eyes towards creating activities and novelties that will keep people coming back. You make sure that you will be surprising them on each occasion with something new or special. The responsibilities of General Manager could get overwhelming at times. How do you manage your time and expectations? You need to organiSe yourself, there is time for the guest, time for the team and time for the office work. You need to also learn how to delegate while keeping focus on guest satisfaction and attention to details. What’s your approach to everyday motivation for your staff – how do you make sure that everyone’s on the same page? First you need to create a positive atmosphere at work, team members should be recognised for their efforts and performance, communication is key so all are well informed on the happenings and share a common goal. What makes The Gulf Hotel Bahrain continue to stand out from its competitors? We capitalise on our legacy; The Gulf Hotel has been known for its quality service and our commitment to exceed our guests’ expectations with our personalised approach and ongoing innovation along with our wide choices under one roof. Are you the type of GM who does things from his office, or is your working style more interactive where you walk around the hotel often? I believe in the old saying “hospitality is not simply a job it is a lifestyle” so it cannot be in an office where you sit behind your desk, you do your hours and you go home. A true hotelier needs to be a people’s person and that cannot be done from the office, that will require your presence in the hotel and a continuous 52

interaction with the guests and the team. For the rest of 2018, what are your professional goals with the hotel – what do you hope to achieve before the year ends? With the several ongoing and upcoming projects in the hotel we hope that we will be able to position ourselves as one of the prime products in the market. The renovation of The Gulf Convention Centre will allow us to have one of the best ballrooms and meeting facilities in town with the latest technologies catering for both social and corporate events that will be in addition to the rebranding and refurbishing of La Pergola, our legendary Italian restaurant which will become La Pergola by Pebellini with Gian Carlo Perbellini, a Michelin Starred Italian Chef. Our Famous British Bar Sherlock Homes in undergoing a full refurbishment and will be reopened for the World Cup. Our roof top Fusion restaurant will be fully refurbished with the addition of an outdoor facility and will be rebranded to become Fusion by Tala, our talented Bahraini Chef. Lastly, our all day dining, Al Waha will be remodeled to accommodate more guests. ✤

BEAUTY AND BUSTLE IN BAKU
MODERN ARCHITECTURE, OLD CITY WALLS AND THE WARMEST PEOPLE ARE WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN AZERBAIJAN’S CAPITAL, BAKU. FACT CHECKS INTO THE CITY’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER ADDRESS, THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL BAKU TO EXPLORE A DESTINATION THAT STILL REMAINS LITTLE-VISITED BUT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON EVERY TRAVELLER’S BUCKET LIST…

F
or GCC residents, Baku is an east-meets-west destination that offers the best of both worlds. Its historical core firmly keeps a foothold in the orient whilst its beautifully refreshing promenades and sky-high Flame Towers take one step towards picturesque European life. With a visa on arrival for Gulf nationals, and a brand new ASAN e-visa system for citizens of 81 countries, including the UK, Australia, and US (making it quick to apply and receive a visa via email), visitors can now take full advantage of a place that blends cosmopolitan living with old-world charm. As with every trip we embark on for the first time, location is key to getting the most out of your break. And so, the Beaux-Arts style luxury hotel that we chose was everything – and more – than what we’d hoped for (and seen online). Enter, Four Seasons Hotel Baku…
ALL THE CHARACTER
There’s a reason why we love the Four Seasons as a hospitality brand. They go above and beyond to embrace the essence of every destination in which they open a hotel. Here, there couldn’t be a more picture-perfect property to showcase the distinct sides to Baku. Its exterior is classic, reminiscent of luxury neighbourhoods in cities like London and Paris, with a white-washed stone front that quickly adds a palatial elegance to the façade. Inside, we’re greeted by marble everything with sophisticated flower arrangements, cosy sofas, and stylish chandeliers – and that’s just the lobby. We’re soon 56
fact magazine
taking note of the décor because it’s every interior maven’s dream, and all the things that we’d want in our own home. The feeling is one of being in a large living room with all your friends from all over the world gathered in one place, for the staff and guests that we came across had at the very least a friendly smile to share, if not, great conversation about Baku and their visit. If the hotel’s goal is to make your surroundings comfortable on a homely level, they’re doing things just right!
PREMIER LIVING
You have to pinch yourself when the hotel room you’re staying in is bigger than your entire apartment. Not only is the Premier Room a huge space, it has THREE balconies; one looking directly into the Old City, the second with an instagram-worthy shot of the famous Flame Towers and the third boasting far-reaching views of the promenade along the shores of the Caspian Sea. Yes, it was hard to tear ourselves away to go out and explore the city every morning when seeing all its different sides from our room was a beautiful cultural experience in itself. With the option of either a king-sized or twin beds, our accommodation is filled with light. It’s airy, neutral tones and indulgent décor reminds us that Four Seasons is truly a tasteful brand. The beds can only be described as what we imagine it would be like to sleep on a fluffy cloud, and the ottoman-style furniture means there’s a place to do everything.
Large arm chaired seating is perfect to sink into after a day of walking, the work desk with executive leather office chair is a laid-back space to catch up on emails without compromising on relaxation, and the huge bedside table means that aside from the very large walk-in closet, you’ve also got plenty of room to store things in the bedroom. The highlight of the room, however, had to be the mind-blowing bathroom which extends to reveal a set up that wouldn’t go out of place in a 5-star spa. We’re talking one very BIG marble bathroom that includes double vanities; mirror embedded television, a deep soaking tub, separate rain shower room and a separate toilet with bidet. When you’re ready for full-on luxury downtime, slip into a sumptuous terry cloth bathrobe and enjoy the high-speed internet access for multiple devices, fully stocked private bar, in-room movies on the 42-inch LCD television with a Blu-ray player, iHome for your iPod and iPhone, and a room service menu of the most delicious food. Do you even need to leave?
ELEGANT EVERYTHING
It’s often the case when you stay at a hotel that at least one area is in need of improvement or attention. Not here. Down we go to Zafferano, the signature all-day dining restaurant, which is named from the Italian word for “saffron,” the spice that grows abundantly in Azerbaijan. The Italian-themed menu highlights delicacies from Central Italy (we find that Italian cuisine has a stronghold in the city’s food scene). fact magazine

• GLOBETROTTER
In warmer weather, the restaurant opens to an outdoor terrace at the edge of the new Philharmonic Park. What convinces us almost immediately about the restaurant is our first foray down to breakfast. Having just ordered our beverages, a gentlemen on the table next to us bids good morning and proceeds to say “this is the best hotel breakfast in Baku” and with lots of nodding and smiles, we get up to explore. Think pastries galore, an Azeri breakfast station, eggs cooked to order, healthy juices, an extensive cereal counter, hot foods like sausages, sautéed mushrooms, beans and more, plus all the beverages you need for a wake up call or morning boost. The hotel’s version of the local egg with tomatoes breakfast main is definitely worth a try – you might even go for seconds like us! On our last day, we enjoy a leisurely breakfast followed by a quick nap and then a visit to what I can only describe as the most sophisticated spa of any city hotel we’ve every visited. It’s the only spa in Baku with a view of the sea and for that alone it’s worth a visit. The luxurious Jaleh Spa and Health club has treatments dedicated to advanced skin care and body therapies with ancient traditions of Turkey and Persia. There are nine relaxing treatment rooms as well as the sensual bathing retreats known as hammams. Separate changing rooms for men and women offer showers, saunas, steam rooms, ice fountains and heated loungers. The indoor pool is unlike anything we’ve seen before and it takes we can’t stop taking pictures of it – though no phone screen can do this grand space justice. Most of all, it was the small touches by the staff who replenished our water and offered complimentary tea and dry fruits and nuts as relaxation snacks, regardless of not having a treatment booked – and this is just some of the finer benefits you get to experience as an hotel guest.
SEND ME YOUR LOCATION
You’ll be that annoying person on your insta and Facebook feeds who spams everyone with all their checkins because the Four Seasons Hotel Baku is the most ideally-located hotel you’ll find. It’s just seconds from the Old City where trinket treasures, local vendors, quaint homes, and the most incredible authentic Azeri food await (highly recommend lunch at Tandir – a small tavern with the best Azeri bread, ever). This means that souvenir shopping is right on your doorstep. On the other side, you can cross the road and tackle the stairs up to the Flame Towers and Marty’s Lane where the best views of the entire city will give you real hashtag travel goals. Turn left out of the hotel and cross over to the promenade or keep going until you reach the bustling Nizami Street where a more modern approach to shopping, cafés and monuments is evident. Also, just across the road is the stunning Carpet Museum. 58

We’d recommend taking a food break at the Cookshop Baku where our request for a non-menu item (the local kuku – eggs with herbs) was fulfilled by a friendly waiter and a happy chef! In simple terms – we couldn’t have picked a better hotel as the base for our very first trip to this mesmerising city! There are very few traits left of the country’s soviet past, bar the odd old-school car – which actually adds a sense of nostalgia and realness to the place. Azerbaijan makes most of its money from oil and gas, though grains, grapes, cotton and livestock are also a good contribution to its economy. You will learn more about the country’s many different revenue streams as well as its familyoriented culture just by talking to locals around the city. They are a gracious people – men carry a gallant attitude, holding doors open and addressing passers-by politely, whilst the women will stop to have conversations about everything from your outfit to your beauty regime and, as we encountered, to offer you fresh baked local desserts straight out of their grocery bags. As Baku is in the early stages of becoming a tourist hotspot, we found that the local people welcomed us with genuine intrigue and an eagerness to learn and share stories. With a cup of Azeri black tea soaking in the lemon slice flavours, which is served at every seated spot, we happily obliged and made new friends and memories of our own! ✤

EVOLUTION OF THE SUV:
2018 BMW X2
fact magazine
63
• ISLAND RIDES
Hate it or love it, the SUV holds top spot here in the Gulf, and car manufacturers are well aware of the easily bored crowd who constantly crave the next best thing. Raising the stakes is BMW’s newest entry, the exciting X2…
Y
ou know those charts that depict human evolution, beginning in the days of the Australopithecus who grow and morph into the Homo habilis, the Neanderthals and hey presto, the Homo sapiens of modern day movement – who agreed that walking is so last millennium and decided to build four-wheel machines that would carry them to places? The development of SUVs could inspire its very own chart, starting with sturdy army-issued Dodges, to the primeval post-war Utility Wagon with Jeep mechanics and the metal-top Land Rovers that soon transformed into familyfriendly Explorers, hustling Hummers and time-travelling crossovers from manufacturers like Lexus, Porsche and Jaguar to name but a few. In other words, if an SUV wants to draw attention in 2018, it had better bring its A-game… and then some. As the BMW X2 came around the corner for us to test drive, its extrovert exterior had us intrigued. Oozing understated confidence; this 2018 model cuts a sublime figure from any angle – like a finely-tuned athlete taking position at the starting line. There’s an essence of rugged refinement that gives the X2 extra pep with a touch of BMW’s signature sporting grace of a coupe. With a sporty suspension set-up, the BMW X2 pushes back boundaries, puts a firework under old habits and brings previously uncharted levels of driving pleasure to this vehicle segment. If there’s one thing that we are absolutely sure of at first glance, it’s that the BMW X2 was made for the young, urban crowd. Social butterflies who make their car a second home and live for all things digital – this is the car that’s going to keep them connected in all aspects of life, especially with the cool kids of instagram. That’s not to say that the BMW X2 wouldn’t appeal to any motoring fan who is young at heart either! Let’s begin with details, the BMW X2 has wheel arches with a squared-off look, striking exhaust tailpipes and accentuated side skirts, not to mention an elegant roofline, slick lines and slim window graphic. If you’re looking for a car with its very own unique character that still stays
64
fact magazine
true to its maker’s roots, the BMW X2 won’t betray on this. Two design features, in particular, catch the eye. The X2 turns BMW’s familiar trapezoidal kidney grille form on its head, and it now broadens as it heads south; this is the first time a modern BMW has gone about things this way and it certainly works to emphasise the car’s width and sporty stance. And the additional BMW roundel on the C-pillars references a much-loved detail of classical BMW coupes, such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL, further highlighting the sporting DNA of the BMW X2. It’s all well and good to please the eyes, but what about the thrill-seekers looking for extra oomph? BMW TwinTurbo engines transfer the X2’s attractive genes to the road in suitably dynamic style. Three variants are available from launch; the BMW X2 sDrive20i petrol model, the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant, and the X2 xDrive25d diesel. Both diesel cars come as standard with xDrive intelligent allwheel drive and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while the petrol model is fitted with the sporty seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission. All combinations turn every journey – on any terrain – into an adventure. Some of the best drives in this car, and journeys that really played into the strengths of the BMW X2 included the leisurely treks from Amwaj all the way down to Sakhir – or any open road for that matter. The handling of the car is smooth and enjoyable, and with the right playlist on repeat – you’ll be in automobile heaven. Of course, on-road safety is a concern as with all vehicles and the BMW X2 doesn’t do things by half. It offers customers cutting-edge technologies when it comes to driver assistance systems. For example, the Traffic Jam Assistant eases the driver’s workload in tedious stop/start traffic on congested motorways. The optional Parking Assistant is likewise designed to make life easier for the BMW X2 driver, automatically identifying suitable parking spaces and, if desired, taking over steering duties for the parking manoeuvre.

mmaculately decked up in rich colours and majestic Indian relics, the traditional setting of Rivaaj induces sweet nostalgia for some while leaving everyone completely awestruck. From its stunning ethnic chandeliers to the vibrant drapery, the restaurant provides a traditionally mystical set up that beautifully reflects the true spirit of India. But what makes Rivaaj truly stand out from all the other Indian restaurants on the island is its strong liaison with ageold Indian customs and traditions. Building on the Qureshi culinary legacy, Chef Javed Qureshi is all set to introduce the unparalleled recipes of his ancestors to the people of Bahrain. We couldn’t wait to dig in! As we reveled in the glorious interiors of the newly-opened restaurant, we were introduced to our first dish of Paya Shorba. An aromatic clear soup with lamb trotters, the dish envelops our taste buds in a distinctively rich flavour. The lamb is perfectly cooked and succulent while the broth is brimming with spicy goodness. We knew we were off to a great start! “The food and hospitality are meant to represent the cultures and traditions of ancient India,” Chef Javed says. “Shifting away from the concept of modernisation of Indian cuisine, we want our diners to experience authentic food in its truest form,” he adds. Our next dish of Anar Garam Ke Aloo was love at first bite. The exotic blend of herbs and spices truly elevates the flavour of the humble potato while the pomegranate adds a pleasant and refreshing tartness to the mix. A delicious amalgamation of contrasting flavours, the dish transported us to the mesmerising streets of India! “Flavour is the true essence of any dish,” informs Chef Javed. “I love experimenting with a variety of spices in my cooking. Ingredients like cardamom and pathar ke phool are definitely some of my favourites to work with.” As we tucked into our next dish of Murgh Al Rivaaj, there was no denying Chef Javed’s immense love of spices. Served on a charcoal grill to retain its flavour, the dish was an instant favourite for everyone at the table. Oozing a pleasant smokiness and just the right amount of spice, we couldn’t keep ourselves from going back for seconds! Coming from a family that is deeply rooted in the art of cooking, Chef Javed knew from the very beginning that food is where his heart lies. “Recognising the local palate is very important to create a successful dining experience,” Chef Javed tells us. “While Rivaaj plans to stick to basic Indian cuisine, diners can expect a hint of local influence in some of the dishes.” Deeply entrenched in the Qureshi culinary tradition, our next dish of Nihari Al Subbo is a delicacy in its own right. A thick, fragrant stew infused with an array of spices consisting of decadently prepared lamb, the dish is a gift that keeps on giving! Another one of our favourites, Chooza Makhni is the ultimate flavour bomb. Melt-in-your-mouth tender chicken dunked in luscious creamy gravy, Rivaaj’s take on the classic Butter Chicken is unlike anything we have had on the island. Definitely our newest obsession! 88

As the super friendly and attentive staff acquainted us with the history and ingredients of our menu for the day, we were presented with our final dish, the decadent Lamb Biryani. A hearty treat for our senses, the delicate recipe of juicy lamb and flavourful, perfectly done rice is what foodie dreams are made of! Apart from some AH-MAZING savoury delicacies, the restaurant also offers an array of refreshing fusion and classic beverages as well as some scrumptious Indian-inspired desserts. We highly recommend their Gajar Ka Halwa. SO GOOD! For a more personalised experience, diners also have the choice to either indulge in fine dining with Maharaja, a splendid yet intimate dining area or truly relax and unwind with Zameen, a more laidback and casual setting. The food represents the flavours of India in all its brilliance. Armed with Chef Javed’s exemplary culinary genius, gorgeous ambience and some of the friendliest staff ever, Rivaaj is sure to become your number one destination for exquisite Indian cuisine. ✤

I
have always been fascinated by the creativity of the human mind and the ability of people to innovate. I see that in all aspects of life, and more often in the culinary business. Working for a magazine and being married to a man who loves his food just as much as I do, I ‘ve been blessed to visit almost every restaurant around Bahrain, and have tried, by now, a big variety of the globe’s magnificent cuisines. Downtown Rotana in Manama, houses many of the masters of this creative action story. Their Friday brunch changes themes on a regular basis, and they continue to amaze me at every visit! After an extravaganza of seafood with the world’s best lobsters to giant crabs all the way from Alaska, it is the turn of the red meat to take centre stage. The meat has been cooking for 24 hours to be served in an abundance of ways that is guaranteed to satisfy the pickiest of tastes. Apart from the regular corners that accompany all brunch buffets, such as the cheese bar, pickles and olives, chilled seafood counter, Arabic mezze, fresh salads, grills, and, of course, dessert, we witness appealing twists that match the new theme. But you can always mix your own salad that suits your unique taste with an array of greens and a couple of different dressings. The Indian corner is a must and is always up to the standard. I just have to try that delicious Biryani every single time! On this particular occasion, it’s the Vegetable Biryani with a tender piece of that slow-cooked lamb that leaves me drooling. And who doesn’t like a quick visit to the sushi bar? Always fresh and inviting. Two different kinds of soup are always there to choose from. To complement the different kinds of roast selections, I tasted, for the first time ever, the most delectable roasted garlic soup! Yes, there is no typo here! It is garlic, and it is REALLY good. A wide range of dishes were on offer for main course. or pepper sauce, a full lamb was kept warm over hot stones and was great with the Jordanian mansaf (rice), in addition to roasted fish and turkey and many more mouthwatering creations that were equally as delicious as the next. Steamed vegetables and roasted potatoes or gratin are the best companion of a roast in addition to a variety of different kinds of mustard and sauces – this brunch HAS IT ALL. The dessert corner is packed with flavours from coffee in tiramisu, to chocolate tart and um ali, or maybe go for a bowl of fruit salad after the mighty meat mains. A scoop of ice cream will be amazing on a freshly-made crepe au chocolat and kids will love the fruits dipped in the chocolate fountain or a pink cloud of cotton candy.

A time for family, traditions and a whole lot of feasting, the Holy Month of Ramadan has a truly special place in my heart. So much more than just refraining from food and drink, Ramadan is a chance for spiritual and emotional cleansing as well as contributing to the less fortunate. After last year’s extremely delightful and enriching Ramadan celebrations, I was extremely curious to delve deeper into the meaning of this joyous occasion. As I got around to talking to locals as well as expats, I realised that Ramadan meant something to everyone. While to some it brought a lingering feeling of nostalgia, to others it meant a time to start over and repairing their relationship with God. No matter what Ramadan means to you, there’s no denying that it brings out the best in you. Everybody is a little more patient, kinder and humbler during this time of the year. As a non-Muslim trying to understand the meaning of this important time, I was able to experience a culture and customs that opened a whole new world to me. The act of fasting and feasting introduced me to a sense of empowerment and solidarity that I had never known before. With the month of blessings and giving upon us, I’m extremely excited to welcome another round of epic celebrations as well as learning a whole lot more while gorging on some AH-MAZING food! Here’s wishing everyone a happy and blessed time. Ramadan Mubarak! ✤
As a rule, I don’t talk about my eating habits but if someone asks me about what I eat, and I reply that I don’t eat meat, fish or any dairy; first they look shocked then comes the question “are you vegan?” And when I reply “yes” - the look of shock is still there, followed by a pause as I can see their brain working to ask the same old question: “But where do you get your protein?” A smile comes across my face and I think to myself “why does me not eating meat, fish or dairy upset so many people? It really has nothing to do with them.” It reminds me of when I used to be an athlete and didn’t drink alcohol or smoke, and people would ask why, like I offended them in some way. But I answer anyway. I say there are an abundance of foods out there to get your protein and the king of these are Legumes such as beans, lentils, nuts and peas. You can also get protein from some of the following: tofu, tempeh, edamame, nutritional yeast, hempseed, quinoa, oats and oatmeal, and chia seeds. not forgetting avocados, apricots, kiwifruit, blackberries, bananas, peaches, brussel sprouts, spinach, broccoli, and potato, just to name a few. when i then ask the question “where do cows, chickens and sheep get their protein from?” i get an uncomfortable silence. So, for those that aren’t vegan or on a plant-based diet, there is no need to worry. ✤
