W

hat’s your favourite thing about Ramadan in the Gulf? Is it the opportunity for intimate dinner gatherings to eat all the cheese sambusek you could dream of, or maybe it’s the calmness that falls over the city where a slower pace of life sets in, and how about those shorter working hours (admit it, it’s a bonus) and more time to do the things you love? Personally, Ramadan in this region has become one of my favourite times of the year. For those who find themselves soul searching or in need of a break from the superficial pressures of society, this time of year really allows people to put things into perspective. Whether you’re fasting or not, this is a great chance to get back to basics with everything from your nutrition to giving in the community and also reflecting on what’s important around you.

For me, the simplicity of this time and observing fast is a true test of willpower and one that I thoroughly enjoy. But, do you know what else I enjoy? Eating. And with that in mind, it’s amazing to see the huge variety of Iftar and Ghabga experiences on offer for Ramadan 2019. Turn to p15 and let us help you to start making those all-important plans with family, friends and colleagues – there’s everything from sprawling buffets to private settings, set menus and so much more. The choice is yours.

he sophisticated restaurant-café hosted an exclusive launch, “The Tea Party”, where invited guests were treated to an extravagant afternoon of 18th century European-themed entertainment and delicious food in an elegant garden party setting at the Shakespeare & Co. venue in Zallaq Springs.

MAN’OUSHE STREET Man'oushe Street, a popular Middle Eastern restaurant, opened two new stores in Bahrain, marking the brands 3rd and 4th locations in the Kingdom.

MINT TRADING PARTNERS, a retail investment group focused in F&B businesses within the GCC, holds the franchise of Man’oush Street in Bahrain. It had earlier signed a franchise agreement to develop eight new Man’oushe Street branches in Bahrain and seven in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the next ten years.

Man’oushe Street debuted in Bahrain last year when it opened its Central Production kitchen with a delivery service in Riffa.

Serving traditional and home-styled street food, it quickly garnered popularity which lead to the opening of its second branch in Almoayyed Tower in Seef.

Marking a strategic move, the concept has expanded their presence to Juffair and Saar, areas populated with an expatriate and strong local demographic, targeting a customer base with an appetite for tradition, innovation and Lebanese cuisine.

Man’oushe street was born in 2010 right out of tradition. It is a celebration of love depicting how mothers lovingly prepare food, the manāqīsh, for their children. Bahrain embraces 12

tradition and from that Man’oushe Street draws inspiration to carry that tradition and authenticity of the mothers who would wake up early in the morning just to make a manoushe.

Upon our first examination of the exterior, we immediately noticed the sedan’s modern design and sporty proportions, highlighted by precise lines and beautifully contoured surfaces. All of these features ensure that the aerodynamics of this model are fully optimised. The new interpretation of the LED headlights blends effortlessly into the front end as do the T-shaped air intakes. The slim, L-shaped, three-dimensional rear lights are another improved feature whilst the twin-pipe exhaust system not only improves performance, but also adds to the car’s already proficient appearance.

Still nodding our approval over the exterior, we slid inside the cabin to find out what the interior had to offer. Needless to say, we were not disappointed by what we discovered. As mentioned earlier, BMW is known for its style, comfort and quality. These attributes are prominently displayed throughout the inside of this 3 series sedan. All of the materials and trimmings used are of a premium standard and the pristine nature of the workmanship is obvious. The entire arrangement of this BMW has been precisely designed to maximise practicality and performance. The large surface screen, the grouping of the instrument cluster as well as the quality of the control display all stand out, whilst the clear surface layout and driver-focused cockpit both add to the hugely impressive style of this 3 series sedan. With plenty shoulder and leg room throughout the vehicle and a boot with a capacity of 480 litres, space would never be an issue.

The on-road performance of this BMW more than matched the quality of its appearance and parts. This sedan houses a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine that produces 258 hp (190 kW). This engine boasts BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that allows the 330i to bullet from 0 – 100km/h in just 5.8 seconds. The Electric Power Steering (EPS), ample grip on the corners as well as the hugely efficient braking system kept this power in check and helped to ensure a safe driving experience throughout.

We had an enormous amount of fun driving around in this extremely capable vehicle and ultimately agreed that it would be great to have this model in the home garage.

A number of features have been added to or improved upon for this model. Highlights of these include the Head-Up display with a 70% larger projection surface, the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant as well as the extensive selection of driver assistance systems. These systems include Collision and Pedestrian Warning with Braking function as well as a Lane Departure Warning system. The driving stability systems include an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction 46

Control (DTC), Corner Braking Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Performance Control and Dry Braking Function.

Some of the many safety features include airbags for the driver and front passenger, side airbags for the driver and front passenger, head airbags at the front and rear, crash-active front head restraints, a crash sensor as well as a tyre pressure indicator. To aid the driver with parking, Parking Assistant with automated longitudinal and lateral guidance, Reversing Assistant, Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera and 360-degree cameras are all fitted as standard. You shouldn’t be scraping your car on anything anytime soon.

Overall, we found the all-new BMW 3 series sedan 330i to be a well-constructed, comfortable, good looking vehicle that was not only a joy to drive, but designed to be practical and performance orientated whilst ensuring the safety of both you and your family. ✤

MCLAREN READIES RULE-BREAKING GRAND TOURER

McLaren has removed the shape-changing, additional body panels previously used to hide the form of its imminent, rulebreaking ‘Grand Tourer’. The car’s sleek and boldly elegant design can now be discerned although the lightweight body remains covered by a shrink-wrapped livery that suggests the number of established rules the McLaren of Grand Tourers will break. The company is promising it will begin to peel off this disguise this May. The application of the shrink-wrap will also enable the Development Team to enter the closing stages of the car’s extensive evaluation programme, which has already encompassed thousands of miles in hot and cold climates across the globe. The ‘Grand Tourer’ has proven its ability to cover long distances in supreme comfort, but always with extra shapechanging and noise-inducing panels applied. Now that these have been removed, the Development Team will run further validation tests, including a 1,600km drive from McLaren’s development base near Barcelona, Spain, back to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. To be completed in one stint with two occupants and a full complement of luggage, this is one of many long-distance drives that will help the team to confirm the new model is both comfortable and refined over the long distances a grand tourer is expected to consume … one rule that McLaren won’t be breaking.

The McLaren of Grand Tourers was announced by McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt, during last month’s press presentation at the 89th International Geneva Motor Show.

He promised that the fourth car to be launched under the company’s Track25 Business Plan will combine competition levels of performance from a twin-turbo V8 engine with

continent-crossing capability and a level of agility never experienced before in the luxury Grand Tourer segment. He stated that the McLaren of Grand Tourers will be the most usable mid-engined car yet. The McLaren of Grand Tourers will also be the only one to share its DNA with a Hyper-GT: McLaren’s Speedtail. Mike went on to say that the car - a name is yet to be announced – won’t be part of any of the company’s existing model Series and will be a unique, tailored model. LOCATION

The Maldives is situated in the Indian Ocean some 400 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, making it a relatively short flight of less than five hours from Doha. Qatar Airways has two daily non-stop flights from Doha to Male; a redeye departing shortly after midnight and a daylight flight departing early morning.

We were greeted by Atmosphere Kanifushi Island staff at Male airport and taken for light refreshments at the property’s arrival lounge, while waiting for our seaplane ride.

The coral atolls of the Maldives are scattered across the Indian Ocean, just north of the equator. Kanifushi Island is just a 30-minute scenic flight from Malé International Airport via Sea Plane with Trans Maldivian Airlines (a return transfer is US$490, including taxes).

On arrival to the Island, we had a very warm welcome filled with music and lots of smiles

BEACHFRONT VILLAS

Imagine rustic-chic Beach Villas with direct access to the silky white-sand blue lagoon and surrounded by coconut trees and lush tropical vegetation.

The entire resort is built with natural materials, timbre, granite and stone, the resort style is the perfect fusion between traditional and modern architecture.

We checked into the lavish Sunset Junior Suite with direct beach access and sunrise

views. There’s too much to take in, but we were especially blown away by the open-air bathroom which takes up the space of an entire garden, the huge whirlpool bathtub was stunning and tropical plants line the walls of this heavenly space.

Our next favourite area is the private deck which leads right onto the beach. Sun loungers have got our names written all over them – we spent so much time here relaxing and topping up the tan.

Inside, it’s very spacious, you have plenty of storage room, a comfortable king size bed as well as a beautiful sofa to lounge on.

However, the standouts of this room were in the little details. These included an array of high-tech toys and gourmet treats. The mini bar is replenished twice a day and you have your own personal room butler that will make sure you get everything you need to make your experience even better.

SERVICE AND FACILITIES

The service is faultless. Guests have their own personal butler to look after them throughout their stay, and the rest of the staff will soon feel like old friends. Facilities include the Akiri Spa by Mandara, Dive and Sail centre, Kids Club, Club House and five amazing restaurants to dine in! Daily snorkelling trips, excursions and adventures are also available upon request.

FOOD AND DRINK

Just because you are in the Maldives, at a

5-star resort in one of the most secluded spots in the Indian Ocean, doesn’t mean that the gastronomy is slacking. It’s very much the opposite at Atmosphere Kanifushi, where the food game is so STRONG. World cuisine is represented through the resort’s five dinning outlets. Here goes:

The main restaurant on the island serves a wide variety of international cuisine, buffet style and live cooking stations are available here. The spectacular beach-side breakfast buffet caters to all tastes with American, Asian Continental and local Maldivian speciailties including ‘Mas huni’ (tuna with onion, coconut and chilli), or ‘Faro Mas Riha’ (a spicy reef-fish curry).The breakfast is a delectable spread. Flaky pastries, tantalising egg dishes, cereal bars, fresh fruit, healthy juices and so much more. They also serve lunch and various themed evenings such us Indian Ocean Night; a Culinary Journey featuring virtuoso cooking displays from around the Indian Ocean. The Passage to India soirée is a fabulously exotic buffetbanquet of curries, tandoors and dosa, with steamy cooking stations.

The restaurant has a beautiful terrace that overlooks the beach. From the extensive breakfast to lunch and dinner, The Spice is infinitely beachside indulgence at its best.

THE LIQUID

The main bar of the resort serves an array of exotic mocktails and cocktails. Strategically located next to the pool, it is probably one of the most favoured locations on the island to unwind and absorb the stress-free Maldivian environment. fact magazine

Our absolute favourite food experience at Atmosphere Kanifushi had to be the venue that whipped up the most exotic flavours and unusual dishes. A masterpiece crafted vegetarian menu specifically for Jain Cuisine capable to convert the most committed carnivorous guests.

On our morning ride out to sea, our instructor and the boat’s captain go over safety procedures and reassure us that this is going to be one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Little did we know how true this was until hopping over the edge of the boat and starting our soothing snorkel session. We spot intricate bouquet of coral and groups of colourful fish.

SUNSET CRUISE

Possibly one of the best excursions we embarked on at Atmosphere Kanifushi.

Get ready for an unforgettable evening. The attentive staff had some canapes ready for the trip alongside the expertise to keep an eye out for the dolphins at sea. You will sail the blue water all the while watching the dramatic sunset and how the Maldives does day to night. It’s a spectacular view that you will surely want to capture on camera.

WATER SPORTS

A MONSOON MEDLEY

When we think of far-eastern cuisine, what comes to mind is a colossal mix of tastes, textures and ingredients. From delicately delicious dim sums and spicy fried rice to tangy orange chicken and some oh-so delicious Pad Thai; Asian food is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant cuisines the world has to offer. FACT’s Aanchal Duggal went to discover the array of dishes that Monsoon restaurant has to offer… fact magazine

aking authentic far-eastern cuisine to a whole new level, Monsoon has been serving Bahrain’s discerning diners with decadently delicious food for almost two decades now. Entrenched in tradition and innovation, the restaurant is a tribute to the palaces of Bali and temples of The Orient. FACT’s go-to destination for bona fide cuisine from the Far East, Monsoon serves Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese food in a traditional Asian setting. As their ever-so friendly staff ushered us in, the majestic doors and breathtaking interiors enticed us for what was to come.

We started our culinary expedition with a scrumptious platter featuring some of the best Thai delicacies; Wang Ruam. A mouth-watering medley of Kanom Pang Na Kung (crunchy shrimp toasts), Toon Tong (golden prawn money bags), Gai Hor Bai Teur (pandan chicken bites) and Poh Pia Tod (crispy spring rolls) all made up this beautifull-presented platter and each component tasted just as delicious as it sounds. The shrimp toasts are perfectly golden and packed with flavour, while the pandan chicken bites are like little nuggets of heaven. So good!

If you’re a poke enthusiast, our next dish will be right up your alley. A bowl of freshly diced tuna akami with tangy chukka wakame, spicy mayo, pickled cucumber, fried shallot and edamame beans; the refreshing and tantalising blend of textures and flavours had us oohing and aahing from the very first bite.

The fish was super fresh and flawlessly seasoned, while the spicy mayo provided just the right amount of kick. Definitely one of our favourites of the meal! As we (not so) patiently waited for our next dish of Edo (mixed sushi and sashimi platter), we were informed that Monsoon imports ingredients from all over the globe to serve up the freshest, flavourful and most authentic dishes. Our next plate was a true testament to their philosophy.

A treat for our senses, the gorgeously decked sushi and sashimi platter had our cameras and chopsticks at the ready. Featuring everything from Sashimi (maguro, shake, samachi, suzuki) and Makisushi (California) to Nigiri (hamachi, ebi, shake, unagi, suzuki, hotate, tako, tuna), we were in sushi heaven! Bringing our love for this Japanese gem to the very fore, the decadent Makirolls, to-die-for Tuna Nigiri as well as the luscious Hamachi Sashimi, all transported us to the streets of Japan itself.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we were introduced to our first main of the day - Soy Braised Short Rib. This was no ordinary short rib; it came with truffle dashi foam and pickled shiitake mushrooms for an added oomph! The ribs are juicy and tender, and richly flavoured, while the creamy truffle foam and mushrooms truly bring the earthy nature of the dish together.

Apart from the serene ambiance and some of the most amazing staff we’ve had the pleasure of being served by, what makes Monsoon one of our favourite restaurants in Bahrain is its immense attention to detail and quality. As our next dish of Khao Pad Sapparod was presented to us in an actual pineapple shell, we knew that the culinary team at Monsoon takes their food and its presentation seriously. Pineapple rice with prawns, calamari, sea bass and aromatic curry powder and onion, this dish is unlike anything we have ever had before. Oozing with delicate flavour, the rice is sweet without being too overwhelming, while the 82

onion and curry powder add a spicy twist to the mix.

Satiating all our curry cravings, Gaeng Kiew Waan is a must-try for all curry lovers out there. It’s a light, vibrant Thai green curry of fresh green chillies, garlic and sweet basil. Juicy tender chicken swims in creamy, flavourful curry - we had to go back for seconds!

As we were on the verge of diving deep into a very fulfilling food coma, our dessert of Khao Niew Mamoung was brought out.

Needless to say, we did not say no! Thai sweet mango sticky rice served with coconut ice cream, the dessert is an explosion of tastes and textures. From the rich and creamy ice cream to the super fresh mango slices, this is what dessert dreams are made of!

Apart from some tasty culinary masterpieces, Monsoon also serves some really unique and refreshing beverages. We highly recommend the Coco Lychee Slush as well as the Tropical Delight.

Mastering the art of preparing, presenting and pioneering authentic far-eastern cuisine, Monsoon does the cuisines of Asia complete justice. We already know where we’ll be headed when our next exotic food craving strikes! ✤

hen it comes to inviting guests for a Ramadan gathering, a sprawling buffet may not always be your first choice. For those of you looking to blend intimate and entertaining in a venue that is both sophisticated and satisfying, look no further than The Merchant House. A Campbell Gray Hotel, this artfully decorated property in the heart of Manama is also home to the beautiful Indigo, a stunning rooftop garden terrace-cumrestaurant that has plenty to sink your teeth into for the Holy Month ahead.

Even on a regular day, Indigo fuses Mediterranean and Asian authentic delicacies to offer the finest dining experience with exceptional blends and flavours. With an emphasis on sharing, Executive Chef Robert Shipman, has designed a menu that draws from his experience throughout southern Europe and time working with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Combining fresh bold seasonal produce with delicate unmistakable flavours promises to leave a lasting impression.

The same philosophy and attention to detail has been provided by Chef Robert and his team in creating a Ramadan Iftar menu. Head to Indigo as the sun sets and get ready to experience some of the freshest food being served up during this special time of the year. Iftar at Indigo is a combination of a few small dishes set on the table, a variety covering everything from the smoothest chickpea hummous, labneh with zaatar, and delicate muhammara, to name but a few whilst a lovely mini-buffet takes centre stage, boasting what can only be described as pastry heaven. Chef Robert highlights 86

his many years of culinary experience with a medley of sweet and savoury pastries, inspired by Mediterranean classics from Greece and Crete as well as a few more familiar choices covering Morocco and the Middle East.

The highlights for us had to be the famous Spanakopita (filo pastry stuffed with spinach and cheese), the Moroccan Lamb Briouat, which had everyone at the table singing their mmmhs and aaahs, alongside another crowd-pleaser, the light yet tasty Chicken Pastiya. However, it was the perfectly-made Ravani that had us in awe. The moist and flavourful Greek semolina cake is an instant hit – it’s delicate and filling without being heavy – guaranteed to prove a winning formula for Iftar.

A menu of hot dishes will be available from which diners will be served made-to-order food, freshly-cooked to ensure the tastiest ingredients shine through. One of the focal points of

Iftar at Indigo is the melt-in-your-mouth tender braised lamb shank which is cooked for 18 hours to achieve the ideal fall-off-the-bone meat to satisfy all those Ramadan cravings. The dish is certainly one of great quality, served with raisin and almond rice and lamb jus - delicious.

If you fancy something to warm you up that is equally tasty, the roast chicken cooked in Chef Robert’s very own mix of baharat spices and laid neatly on top of creamy, cheesy gratin dauphinois, will be a sure palate-pleaser with every bite feeling like a home-cooked meal. Hearty soups like the Moroccan Harira will also be available to start the epicurean evening with a touch of warmth.

For dessert, the gorgeous chocolate brownies stole our taste buds and made for the most apt sweet ending of our Ramadan tasting at The Merchant House.

What Chef Robert manages to do with this style of Iftar offering is blend together cultures and cuisines that draw on both local tastes and traditions alongside influences from the wider region and beyond. For something that’s a little more detailed and scattered with variety, stepping away from your usual Arabic and International buffet set up, we’d highly recommend booking a table at Indigo for a Ramadan Iftar experience unlike anywhere else in town. ✤

With the feeling of dining in a 19th century estate house in the country side of France, La Table Krug by Y will take the most discerning of palates on an epicurean eight-course journey of the senses.

“With every bite, a ‘rough luxury cuisine d'author’ experience unfolds into a symphony of flavors, leaving diners in pure levitation,” says General Manager, Bernard de Villèle. “This is my second La Table Krug to open after the St. Regis Mexico City, and I can’t wait for our guests and our members to experience the region’s most intimate fine dining experience yet.”

Rough-Luxury is Maison Krug universe with this art of playing with contrast. Every year, following the dream of Joseph Krug, founder of the House, whom believed in outstanding creations as a source of pleasure, Maison Krug offers the very best, regardless of climate variations. Joining the official Krug Ambassade program, represented in 27 countries all over the world, La Table Krug by Y at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain will mark the 151st Ambassade, the first-ever in the Middle East and the fourth La Table Krug restaurant concept within the community after Vienna, Mexico City, and Berlin.

A play on words of ‘experiment’ and ‘experience,’ the EXPeRiMENCe 0.1 menu by Executive Chef Yann Bernard Lejard unveils a sensual eight-course journey with every bite awakening both the palate and mind. With each dish artfully plated in a Picassolike form, the menu highlights the most elegant cuisine including signatures like the: Hamour lemon ginger, light foie gras and Oscietra caviar; Local Bahraini vegetables with confit lobster and mango emulsion; and the Elbow Pasta cooked in a risotto style with unctuous coriander, truffle and quail.

Desserts will also surprise like the Blueberry Parfait in chocolate crust with coconut coulis and more.

Executive Chef Yann Bernard Lejard, says: “The menu EXPeRiMENCe will be like a never-ending story with each menu numbered in order to create a unique dining experience for each guest that is never the same. The dishes will change daily based on my inspiration and feelings, and I will ensure a menu that is always daring, playful, unexpected, and most importantly, without limits.”

The table setting will be equally unique. Inspired by the nouveau high fashion concept of ‘rough luxury,’ guests will dine using only the finest of settings with silver tablware by Christofle, plates by Bernardaud Ecume, crystal glasses by Reidel and even the chef’s

Ramadan doesn’t mean you have to lose the gains you’ve made, nor is it a time to make poor food choices like “fried samosas”. Here are just a few tips to keep on top of your fitness game this Holy month…

Plan Ahead Make sure you have as much carbohydrates as possible.

Carbs give you energy. These should be good carbs such as whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and nuts and seeds.

Break your fast with healthy foods like lots of water, dates, fruits and soup.

Continue Working Out You should continue working out but remember this is not the time to try something new but do enough to preserve your fitness level.

Intensity During this time, you should cut down the intensity of your workouts if you’re working out before you break your fast as you will not have the energy to do really intense workouts. Try more body weight and resistance training.

Change Your Workout Times Change the times of your workout so that they are closer to when you've eaten or are about to eat. This way if you workout just before fast is broken you can replace your energy reserves.

Be Conscious of What You Eat Unfortunately, this is a time when a lot of people gain weight due to bad food choices i.e. fried foods and sweet desserts. This is the time to choose foods with high nutritional values to fuel your body with all the nutrients it needs.

Share with us some of your favourite cultural hotspots to visit in Bahrain and why...

The old Souq of Manama is the first place I would recommend. Having breakfast at Haji Cafe, strolling around the narrow alleyways of the old quarter for unique finds after sipping tea at a traditional cafe in the company of locals, is an experience you wouldn't want to miss. In the evening, the vibrant Block 338 is the place to be for a fun night out with a variety of dining options to choose from and beautiful artworks by Bahraini artists all around the area - it's the perfect spot to capture artistic photos.

What are some of your professional goals to achieve at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay in 2019?

My timeless professional goal is to always let my work speak for itself. 365 days from today, I'd like to look back and be proud of the knowledge I have gained, how far I have reached in my current role and move forward towards the next step in my career.
