Fact Finds

Lumee Street Café Discover more of Bahrain with FACT finds – every month we’ll bring you our favourite eatery, activity or interesting find from around the island. Calling all foodies in Bahrain, there’s a brand new café in town with a cool and creative concept as well as a delicious and affordable menu boasting Middle Eastern flavours for you all to try. That’s right; Lumee Street Café has just opened its doors at Al Aali Mall. The venue is the brainchild of Al Abraaj Restaurants Group, the company behind some of Bahrain’s most popular restaurants such as Al Abraaj, Al Bindaira Cafe and NuAsia Restaurant. Lumee Street Café’s unique concept is inspired by Middle Eastern street food, and captures the exciting foodie experience of traditional street eateries in a buzzing, contemporary setting. Further inspiration comes from the region’s street cafes and restaurants, from the legendary street grills in Bahrain to the colorful falafel carts in Egypt and the fresh tea and coffee houses of Turkey. This cafe-cum-deli is to take traditional dishes and add a contemporary twist to give diner’s a whole new experience. The menu is filled with classic options such as hummus or Bahraini tikka as 14.

fact magazine

well as new dishes such as spicy mattai salad or quinoa kebbe. Visitors have the option to dine in or take home the food of their choice. The name Lumee is Bahraini slang for lemons and lime and is directly related to the food concept at Lumee, which is flavour-packed, fresh and zesty. It also highlights the fact that lemons are an integral part of many dishes in the region. The menu at Lumee Street Cafe has been created in consultation with award winning chef, Chris Barber, who adds a European slant to classic Middle Eastern grills, breads, salads, and mezzes. The warm and rustic decor of the place gives you a homely feel while the seating has been designed to allow for a cosy, comfortable and sharing experience. In addition to the menu, Lumee offers an amazing array of local products and produce: pickled lemons, authentic spices and pastes and other deli staples.

ARTS

Self-Taught Talent With elaborately realistic visions in mind, self-taught Bahraini artist Leena Al Ayoobi paints on a canvas to express her love for the culture she holds close to her heart. Adding vibrant colour to her everyday life, Leena masters her paintings in her spare time. FACT’s Pallavi Ramesh chats with the beautiful young artist about her artistic past, colourful present and ambitious future… She picks up her canvas, puts it on the stand and starts painting. She doesn’t stop until her creative process is fulfilled. And that’s the artist within Leena; passionate and dedicated with a special love for painting traditional and folk art that explores the diverse Arab culture. The first thing we noticed while scanning Leena’s paintings on instagram was – women! We’re curious to learn more about her thought-process and choice of subject. “It’s fun to sketch a woman’s face,” she says simply. “The features, curves, eyes. All my paintings are creations of my imagination. So to put down a beautiful imagination on canvas is fun!” she explains.

After completing an MA in Business Management at the University of Bahrain, Leena now works as a consultant at Ernst & Young.“I never had the chance to study art as I was busy with work and taking up courses related to my field of work,” she tells us. So how does she balance her passion for art with the demands of professional

work life? “Art is therapeutic for me, it makes me happy, it challenges me as a person and it’s a stress-buster,” Leena explains. “These elements are a part of daily life, and that’s how the balancing act happens by default.” Leena paints whenever she feels like it, sometimes even at 2am. In her eyes, there’s no such thing as “dedicated time to art.” It’s this free-spirited approach that has allowed Leena the artistic freedom that so many other trained artists may crave. Not only does Leena paint, she’s a big fan of digital art too. “Sometimes I sketch an animated image on paper and my mood is not to paint, but throw colours digitally, so I do that,” she says. fact magazine

Leena’s anime creations are in fact digital dolls; nostalgic of her childhood when she was into cartoons, a memory that she often visits and one that takes her to a different zone when painting. Leena draws her inspiration from cartoon characters, specifically Japanese anime and Manga, as well as beauty and jewellery. She says: “Certain things catch my attention and get etched in my mind. I make it a point to go home and start painting that very thing, but in my own style.” We soon take a trip down memory lane, and Leena excitedly jumps at the chance to tell us all about the first time she held a paintbrush. “I was three and I used to paint on the walls of my house, random images that came to my mind,” she laughs. Leena took part in all the art competitions at school level and developed her skills step-by-step, teaching herself and enjoying her artistic journey on her own terms. And this includes technique and use of different materials. “I use Acrylic paint for most of my paintings, and I use painting rolls for layering; to give a certain effect to the piece,” Leena explains. “For the perfect texture, I use acrylic mediums and gels.” With a keen interest in traditional art, Leena’s raw artistic talent allows her to express through many different dimensions, and one of her artistic goals is to create visuals of Arabic tradition and showcase them on an international platform. “Arab culture in the form of artworks, needs to be taken on a global platform and made known to people abroad,” Leena says.

Being self-taught, she also wants to take part in more residency programmes in the near future. “I will be heading to Morocco in November for a month-long residency programme; concentrating mainly on traditional art and socialising with the Moroccan art community, and also introducing my art which speaks a lot about Bahrain‘s traditions.”

The Imitation Game

What’s it about:

Set during the darkest days of World War II, this is a British biopic of mathematician and WWII code breaker Alan Turing. Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, the nail-biting story follows Turing and his team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, as work relentlessly to decrypt enemy communication.

Director: Morten Tyldum Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance. Why it’s worth watching? Let’s not forget that Alan Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code, and whose genius saved thousands of lives during WWII. But, Turing lived a troubled life with just as many personal tragedies to go alongside his professional triumphs. It’s this life of alienating others and repeatedly clashing with bosses that Norwegian director Morten Tyldum renders with such accuracy and taste. All the ups and downs of Turing’s life arrive right on schedule in a plot that’s so well told that audiences will be drawn into its manipulation without question. Benedict Cumberbatch’s masterful performance will definitely get even the most highbrow of critics talking. The Imitation Game is compelling from start to finish and we’re convinced it both looks and feels like another serious awards season contender.

Highlights “Benedict Cumberbatch’s masterful performance will definitely get even the most highbrow of critics talking” “The Imitation Game is compelling from start to finish and we’re convinced it both looks and feels like another serious awards season contender.”

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 What’s it about: Katniss Everdeen and her most trusted friends are back and this time they’re hold up in District 13 as rebels. After Katniss and a few others were extracted from the Quarter Quell, where Peeta was left behind under control of The Capitol, her courage and fight for justice is called upon by those who want to help overthrow the cruel ruling President Snow.

“…though we love that the final part has been split into two films, there’s a sense of underwhelming from the trailer…” Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks. Why it’s worth watching? Though we love that the final part has been split into two films, we’re slightly underwhelmed by the trailer which screams ‘predictable’. Don’t get us wrong, we’re pretty big into the world of The Hunger Games, but now that the initial suspense, of being a tribute and getting thrown into a world where it’s kill or be killed, is over we’re finding it hard to get excited. Here’s hoping that Katniss and her new-found rebel family will bring just as much assault, emotion and drama to the film as audiences expect. fact magazine .67

KNOWLEDGE/HUMOUR

What If? - Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions By Randall Munroe

ROCK/ALTERNATIVE/ GRUNGE DANCE/ ELECTRONIC

Motion

By Calvin Harris

In the world of modern-day music,

it’s becoming rather difficult for artists to retain their signature sound without being too generic. This is, however, not the case with Calvin Harris. Enter Motion, a 15-track record that has, so far, produced a string of hits for the Scottish Producer/DJ. Yes, Calvin Harris seems to be on a bit of a roll. And after 2014’s massive hit Summer, it seems this will be a banner year for one of dance music’s finest. We’re loving the instrumental rave-house track Slow Acid, packed with mid-tempo energetic beats and pulsating jolts of a prodigy-like, high-pitched “Wooo!” in the vocals. Where he really wins is with the visuals for this song (if you haven’t already, go and watch the video on YouTube now!). And it’s no secret that Calvin Harris has earned himself major music credentials these last few years - this only gets better on Motion. Perhaps the most anticipated track on the LP is Together, which features Gwen Stefani on vocals, and then there’s Outside with Ellie Goulding (his phone contact list must be every guy’s dream). Blame is another standout, a more fuller and structurally rounded track – maybe this is a new era for Calvin Harris.

Sonic Highway

By Foo Fighters This album had thousands of reviews months before its release date – how, we hear you ask? The honest answer is, we don’t know, because the Foo Fighters didn’t release a single track in the months leading up to the album release. BUT, does that matter? The obvious answer is no, it doesn’t! It’s the hardcore, loyal fans that built up such a hype for this eight-track record (and we’re not surprised, the Foo Fighters are awesome) without having even the slightest idea of what it sounds like! Now that’s a fandom you don’t want to mess with. Just like these hundreds of thousands of eagerly awaiting music minions, we too were unable to get a real glimpse of Sonic Highway, BUT, let’s be honest, the Foo Fighters wound up being the one band to survive the 90s alt-rock explosion unscathed, and we’re sure that their eighth studio album is going to bring them crazy amounts of success.

Ponder the hypothetical with the creator of the widely popular web comic – xkcd; Randal Munroe. He answers the fuzzy and strange questions put forth by his fans, ranging from unusual to out-and-out diabolical. Questions like, What if a Richter 15 earthquake hit New York City? Or horrible ways you could die while building a periodic table out of all the actual elements. These weird and wacky questions are met with Munroe’s well-researched answers. He’s come up with a magnum opus, including never-before-answered questions with a spoon of wit and information!

HUMOUR/DRAMA

“…let’s be honest, the Foo Fighters wound up being the one band to survive the 90s alt-rock explosion unscathed…”

The story of Douglas Petersen deals with middle-age, relationships, parenthood and youth. Douglas’s wife Connie decides to leave him as she falls out of love with her husband, and begins to comprehend that fact that their son is all set to leave for college after the summer holidays. The family embark on their last vacation together – a trip around Europe – where marriage issues, parenting challenges, and personal relationships are tackled. A heartfelt read!

fact magazine

I

t seems that, with the latest generations of Maseratis, the exotic Italian automaker has finally got their act together to produce cars that are as complete as they are beautiful. We saw it with the Ghibli, and now we’ve seen it with the Quattroporte. Maseratis have always been beautiful, but in previous years they were often let down with minor details such as dated looking infotainment software and interior finishing, rattles and squeaks that shouldn’t be there, and poor resale value. Thankfully, all of these details have now been addressed. While the exterior is still pretty as a picture, it’s the interior that really takes your breath away – it’s absolutely superb. Intensely stylish, it’s the little things that make it stand apart from the rest, such as the grained instead of polished surfaces on the wooden trim that really adds a touch of style. And the best part is that there wasn’t

a single noise that shouldn’t be there – not a rattle anywhere, just the lovely racy sound of the V6 featured in our model, and the luxurious sound from the premium stereo system, operated via an excellent, modernlooking driver interface. Which brings us to the other new detail that has been introduced to the latest generation of the Quattroportes and the Ghiblis, which is the company’s great new V6 engines. The new V6, as featured in the Quattroporte S model we drove, is a 3.0l twin-turbocharged unit that puts out 410hp and 550Nm torque, so even though it’s the more economical, and therefore ‘sensible’ option, it’s still an highly powerful car. It’ll go from 0-100km/h in just 5.1 seconds, and on to a top speed of 285km/h. The twin-turbo V8 in the GTS boasts a whopping 530hp, which takes it to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds, and on to well over 300km/h! Ride quality and handling, on the

ISLAND RIDES

other hand, were never problems for any Maserati we’ve driven, and that goes for the new Quattroporte too. In normal driving mode, it glides along with the refinement of any other premium model on the market, and in sport mode, everything firms up to provide a more dynamic and engaging drive. Throttle and steering response both tighten, and it makes the Quattroporte a whole lot of fun to tear up the streets in, and then a sublime sedan in which to cruise home after a long day. The combination of a sensible new engine option and the improved quality is going to add to the desirability of the Quattroporte considerably. In previous years, anyone looking for a premium barge would consider a Quattroporte an exotic luxury – a choice driven by desire rather than sense – whereas a sensible choice would be something German or even Japanese. However, the new Quattroporte, with improved build quality, super-stylish interiors, a stunning infotainment system and more economical model options, all allowing the cars to better hold on to their value, mean that the Quattroporte will now begin to steal more customers away from the Germans!

Throttle and steering response both tighten, and it makes the Quattroporte a whole lot of fun to tear up the streets in, and then a sublime sedan in which to cruise home after a long day.

2015 nissan sunny The new Sunny is a plucky economy sedan that punches well above its weight in terms of comfort and features.

74.

fact magazine

For this model year the Nissan Sunny has undergone a complete redesign both inside and out, offering improved levels of comfort and interior space. There is more legroom both front and back, more headroom, and more storage space than in the outgoing model, as well as more features coming as standard. First off is the plucky new 1.5l inline-four engine. At 99HP, it isn’t going to win any races, but its definitely nippy enough for city driving. What’s great about it is the fuel consumption – the needle hardly moved in the several hours we had the car, and we fully believe the claimed 13.7kg-m figure. Next up is the revamped interior. Aside from the larger amounts of space, there’s a redesigned dashboard boasting a nice centre console with a simple and yet stylish design that shows just because cars are inexpensive, it doesn’t mean that they have to look cheap! Ride comfort and interior noise levels are both as good as you’d expect from a decent compact car, and the handling on the SL model

we drove was pretty good thanks to the grippy 185/65 R15 tyres. However, what impressed me most about the new Sunny is the list of features that come with the car. Standard on all models are the safety features including dual front-row airbags, ABS with brake assist and EBD, all of which are lifesaving technologies. Also standard is the CD/MP3 stereo system with auxiliary MP3 and USB jacks. But then we get to the extra features as included with the top-of-the-range SL spec model we drove, and it just gets better. I mean, where else in a compact economy car would you get rear airconditioning, Bluetooth hands-free for your phone, steering-wheel mounted audio controls AND front and rear centre armrests with cup holders in the rear? The icing on the cake, though, was the intelligent keyless entry and start feature, something that used to only be seen on premium vehicles. Just walk up to the car, put your hand on the door handle to unlock it, and push a button to start, without even taking your key out of your pocket!

With this Nissan has drawn a line in the sand for all car manufacturers. If they can offer this feature on an inexpensive car like this, then never again will we be satisfied by having to use a key to enter and start anything considered mid-to-high end. Take note automakers of the world – the bar has been raised for all of you!

“The icing on the cake, though, was the intelligent keyless entry and start feature, something that used to only be seen on premium vehicles. Just walk up to the car, put your hand on the door handle to unlock it, and push a button to start, without even taking your key out of your pocket!

interview

“The weekend-long event kicked off on the first night with a dinner for the riders at Coral Bay, on the Al Fateh Corniche. The next day was a ride around Bahrain which ended at the Bahrain international circuit, where all the fun and entertainment was set up for visitors, families and friends, or for anyone interested in Harley-Davidsons or motorbikes in general.”

1st Bahrain HOG Rally a Success! The first ever Bahrain Harley-Davidson Owners Group rally took place last month, and it was a storming success, with riders coming from all over the world to take part! The Harley-Davidson Owners Group (HOG) is the official group for owners of these classic and world-famous American Motorcycles. The Bahrain HOG Chapter hosted its first HOG rally last month, and the event was a storming success, attracting riders from across the region and beyond, and incorporating a full day of family fun with exhibition, entertainment and off-road demonstrations courtesy of sponsors Jeep. We caught up with Bahrain HOG Chapter Director Abdullah bin Ahmed bin Ebrahim al Khalifa to find our more about the day. “It went very well, far better than expected,” said Abdullah. “The rally was non-rider friendly, we wanted people and families to come and see what Harley is all about, and we had an exhibition, with the history of Harley-Davidson, and the different names and families of the bikes.” Part of the reason for the success is that the event received huge support from the government, as well as sponsors, which allowed the Bahrain HOGs to really stage an event that Bahrain could be proud of! “What was a pleasant surprise was that the Ministry of Tourism was very interested in the idea, and they backed us up, and the Municipality backed us up, in the car parks and public areas, and the police helped with traffic management, and so on, because the amount of bikers that came into the country was huge,” said Abdullah.

“And, especially for this event, riders were allowed to ride from the GCC across the Saudi causeway. Normally this isn’t allowed, but we applied for the special permission from both sides, and we managed to get it approved.” In the end, there were a total of 380 riders registered for the rally, but even more showed up on the day, so the organisers estimate that there were well over 500 bikes taking part in the ride, which created a problem for logistics and management. “We had riders from all over the Gulf, even from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, but even Europe, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece! These guys saw it on the HOG international website, and came and showed their support, and it was amazing. The people who came from Europe came and rented bikes for the ride.” A special treat came from the guys from Riyadh. “The Chapter of Riyadh did a fantastic Top Gun skills show, where riders have to take their bikes around tight courses marked out by cones whilst being times, to demonstrate their manoeuvring skills,” said Abdullah. All the riders who attended were gifted a rally pack that included a special Bahrain HOG Rally patch. Most Harley riding events make a special patch, that riders can attach to their jackets to show that they were there. “The event was better than we ever expected, and we hope to do it again next year,” finished Abdullah. fact magazine .77

Fitness Forefront: Nike+ Fuelband

Stepping up your health regime? We tell you why the Nike+ Fuelband is a great choice for monitoring, influencing, and improving, your fitness and exercise habits…

Design On Point

There are a number of trendy colours like neon green, pink, yellow and red to choose from, as well as plain black too. It has a rubbery matte finish, which doesn’t irritate the skin and looks great too. We love the 100-dot LED display, which can be read in full daylight, and the band comes in three different sizes so you can get the best fit for your wrist.

Feature Frenzy

The features and capabilities of the Nike+ Fuelband are enhanced with its link to the Fuelband app. A built-in 3-axis accelerometer delivers instant feedback on daily steps, calories burned and Nike’s activity metric currency, Fuel points. Whether it’s walking to the shops or running 10 miles a day – the idea is to make everything you do count towards getting fitter!

82. fact magazine

Battery Life

Thanks to an energy-efficient Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) radio, the Nike+ Fuelband has a much-improved battery life compared to its predecessor; after a week of solid use, you’ll likely have to charge once only, and USB charging takes a little over an hour (pretty impressive, huh?).

Smart Bluetooth Competitive Circles

It’s all about yesterday’s score or outperforming a friend on Facebook. Take the ‘Win the Hour’ feature, which aims to get you active every hour of the day for just five minutes – an LED flash acts as a reminder, as well as a notification popping up on your phone. Perform well and share the results on your social media!

The best thing about the Nike+ Fuelband is that, like many top-ofthe-line, wearable-tech products, it adopts the Bluetooth LE (also known as Bluetooth 4.0). This enables devices to connect and disconnect and sync automatically in the background, with less strain on the battery.

The collection showcases a charismatic mix of textured knitwear, satin and sequins, proving that the arrival of autumn is anything but dull when it comes to the trend stakes. This eclectic vibe embodies a mix of muted palette and rich jewel tones, which add a luxe edge to your outfit. Crop tops and co-ords are here to stay; adorned in sequins or satin florals, they are ultimate for slick, put-together dressing. CHEF paul gindra

The Royal Golf Club is fast stepping up its culinary game, with a brand new foodie concept recently introduced for diners in the form of Repartee. We meet Chef Paul Gindra, the main man in the kitchen, for an insight into Bahrain’s newest dining destination…

CHEF’S TABLE

“The way I cook - I don’t overcomplicate my dishes. If I don’t have good ingredients you’ll pick it up straight away.” When we heard that Repartee at the Royal Golf Club (RGC) was opening its doors after a massive refurb, we were more than eager to meet the man behind the venue’s new and exciting menu. When you walk into Repartee, the changes are a sight for sore eyes; it’s bright, spacious, casual and welcoming. Big windows, bold reds and subtle creamy browns, with large tables and comfy chairs and sofa seating, teamed with simple yet trendy lighting, all make up a dining area that’s simply a breath of fresh air. A sophisticated bar area draws our attention – it’s definitely the focal point of the room. Out comes Executive Chef Paul Gindra who has been working at RGC for around seven months now, and the few changes he’s made really show. “When I first arrived the biggest issue here is that things weren’t as fresh as I would have liked them to be,” he says. “So, I’ve been focusing a lot of time and effort into getting the right products in.” Great! Let’s see how the food tastes. First up is the Vegetables & Cheese platter made up of onion bhaji, grilled halloumi & cabbage wraps, and Vietnamese spring rolls with house hot sauce. Everything is delightfully presented and each dish has a winning component. Our favourites were the beautifully crisp onion bhaji and the light and tasty Vietnamese spring rolls. We notice that the menu at Repartee is very diverse and quickly turn to Chef Paul for further explanation. He says: “It’s 100. fact magazine

what I call new Asian or modern Asian. It’s simple food with a twist.” A twist it is, as we learn with the spectacular second dish - Seared Salmon and Sweet Chili Crab with cucumber and rocket salad and lime dressing. The Salmon is fresh and cooked perfectly – every piece we cut comes away smoothly and is packed with subtle flavours. The presentation gets a thumbs up as well, though, admittedly, isn’t Chef Paul’s number one concern. “It’s definitely more about the taste,” he says “Something can look pretty but if it doesn’t taste good people won’t return. Presentation is evolving and it will come, but I’m focussing on things like seasoning with the chefs in the kitchen and getting them to taste their own food.” Chef Paul hails from Durban in South Africa, but his culinary journey has taken him from humble beginnings working on strawberry farms and potato farms all over the UK, to opening up hotel restaurants in Nigeria, Ireland, Ethiopia, and more recently in Namibia at the Hilton. So, you can only imagine the wealth of experience he brings to the RGC kitchens. As we casually conversate about his work, it’s dessert time. With more than one sweet tooth at the table, we’re intrigued and pleasantly surprised when the Green Tea and Coconut Panna Cotta arrives. WOW! It’s sweet but not sickly, filling but not heavy, and an absolute palate pleaser for dessert fans. We also try the Wonton Kisses – Banana and chocolate filling with a five-spice custard dipping sauce – yum! For someone who never thought he’d be a chef, but instead a marine biologist (aren’t we glad THAT didn’t happen!), Chef Paul has exceeded in the world of professional cooking. He’s experienced, knowledgeable, sure of his skills in the kitchen and knows what he wants for RGC. “I don’t want Repartee to be a formal place or a big party venue – it’s more of a lounge-y, pub vibe,” he says. After spending a couple of hours here, we absolutely agree!

GO: Visit Repartee at Royal Golf Club. Call 1775 0777 for reservations or more information.

Dressed in traditional Sri Lankan style, the manager welcomed us to the laid-back venue, furnished with special wooden tables, chairs and lights that are specially flown in from Sri Lanka and designed by Sri Lankan architect Nandika Dennipitya. The décor offers an urban space; it’s a rural mix of stylish metro seating, complimented by replica windows, giving a rustic feel to the place. Prepared using ingredients native to Sri Lanka, the menu includes options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. interview

FACT Meets Mr. Aqeel Raees The Gulf Hotel Bahrain is celebrating 45 years in the hospitality industry this month and one of the people who has been there since almost the very beginning is The Gulf Hotels Group Chief Executive Officer & Board Member, Mr. Aqeel Raees. FACT sits down with this trailblazing CEO to learn more about his journey with The Gulf Hotel Bahrain and exactly what makes this property a popular choice with guests …

We are welcomed into the office of Mr. Aqeel Raees with a warm smile and a gentle voice. From the moment we shake hands with Mr. Raees and take our seats right up until the end of the last question, it’s clear to see why he is hailed as one of the region’s most accomplished leaders in hospitality; his vast experience, his hard work, his genuine care for the company and its employees, his humble nature, and his future outlook, these are all the inspiring qualities Mr. Raees possesses… Tell us about your journey into the hospitality industry, in particularly, with The Gulf Hotel Bahrain… We are talking about 40 years ago - I joined the Gulf Hotel in August 1974, almost five years after the hotel was opened. There was an ad in the newspaper saying that the Gulf Hotel was sponsoring trainees to study hotel management in the UK, and if you apply you go through interviews and exams. I applied and I was lucky to be selected. In August 1974 I joined the hotel and in September I was in the UK, doing a hotel management and catering course. That was the beginning! And when you returned… I started as a trainee and in November 1976, I was the night manager of the hotel for one

year, which was a tough phase, because you’re expected to be awake all the time and on foot, to go around and check if your staff is awake and alert and your guests are happy. After one year I was appointed as Guest Relations Manager. Gradually I worked my way into the front office, I became the Front Office Manager for a few years, then Rooms Division Manager, and in 1987 I became the Resident Manager, who is number two in the hotel. I was in that post for three years and in 1990, I was appointed as the General Manager of the Gulf Hotel, I stayed in that post for 12 years and in 2002 I was appointed as the CEO of the group. What are some of the challenges you face in the hospitality industry… With newcomers to the market, you have a lot of pressure with the room rates. It’s difficult if we look at the competition and say ‘yes, we can compete with the rates’, of course we can

“I have been blessed with an understanding wife, although she was working, she also went back and supported the children’s learning and was able to reach success.” fact magazine .113

INTERVIEW

“What made The Gulf Hotel popular is the people working with us - we kept our good staff even in the years we did not have a good turn-over. If you have loyal dedicated staff working with you, you are assured that your customers will come back to you.”

compete with the rates as we have a very strong brand name. But also, we have heritage, history and a high standard of restaurants. Another challenge is technology. Before, people used to call, or book through travel agents, now you can tell them go check the hotel on the website, or Tripadvisor. In these cases it can be a good and bad situation because on social media people can post anything - sometimes things, which are not true. It will affect you, as the damage is already done. In face of these challenges, what has kept The Gulf Hotel Bahrain going… The policy of The Gulf Hotel was always to reinvest. Reinvesting happens when you have far-sighted Directors who didn’t take all the money to give to the shareholders. If you don’t improve your property, you can’t compete with other hotels. What made The Gulf Hotel popular is the people working with us we kept our good staff even in the years we did not have a good turn-over. If you have loyal dedicated staff working with you, you are assured that your customers will come back to you. These are the people who make the hotel and this is what kept us at the forefront of the 5-star hotels. Even with more hotels coming in, it’s a healthy challenge, which makes you stay on your toes, not making you complacent and over confident. 114. fact magazine

What has kept you going towards your achievements all these years at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain… For the hotel industry, you need to have a very understanding partner, not many marriages in the hotel industry are very successful, because of the demanding hours. You leave in the morning and work late. Also you have to have understanding children. I have been blessed with an understanding wife, although she was working, she also went back and supported the children’s learning and was able to reach success. I wouldn’t have acquired my success if it were not for her. If you have someone nagging you at home, you can’t concentrate and won’t be able to stay for 12 hours in the hotel, so I give a lot of credit to my wife and children for my achievements. What is your future vision for The Gulf Hotel and yourself in the hospitality sector… We have plans that we will always add to complete and complement what we have. We started with 130 rooms and now we have 370, and apartments; Gulf residences with 98 apartments and 160 rooms. We have added the multi-storey car park with office. We have a spa, which is under construction, and will open in 2015. I have been here 40 years so there will be a day when I say thank you very much. I am now a member of the Board of Directors and I have an obligation towards my family, grandchildren and myself as well. I have not taken a decision yet, and I am still very passionate about what I am doing, as there are a lot of things happening now with The Gulf Hotels Group growing and expanding. We have a hotel in Amwaj islands, which is an apartment hotel, which will open in 2015. We are in the final stages of signing a management contract with two hotels in Manama, which we will be managing hopefully by early 2015. We also have the K hotel, which we are managing, and it’s very successful. We also have the Ocean Paradise in Zanzibar, which is ten years since we started operation there and it’s also very successful.

Ali Fareed Ali Fareed is a blogger with a passion for food, movies and local happenings around Bahrain (Ask Ali Fareed).

If you’re wondering what’s the word on the street in Bahrain, two of our favourite bloggers have their fingers on the pulse. This month they’re discussing all things food and dining out…

it’s amazing how different exercising outside feels, when it’s not 40+ degrees and 100 per cent humidity!”

Let’s face it. Having a good time in Bahrain revolves around a dining table in most scenarios and doing it outdoors is even harder without involving food. So this time I’ll try & show you how to do just that! (If you insist on a more gastronomical experience then check out my article from last month’s issue) Kicks start your day with a truly traditional Bahraini breakfast - I know what I said - at one of the many traditional coffee shops in Souq Muharraq. From there start your walking tour down the souq passing by The Pearl Route, Sh. Isa bin Ali’s house and wrapping up within the walls of Sh. Moh’d bin Ebrahim Center. Manama has an equally visual walking tour to offer or you could simply create your own! Maintain a healthy lifestyle by spending a relaxing

After a long, hot, steaming-sunglass of a summer, we’re finally being treated to some beautiful weather. It really is the best time to be in Bahrain. Still warm enough to wear whatever you want, but cool enough to be able to sit in the shade and not end up in a pool of your own perspiration. And we all know how that feels! It’s also the perfect time to get that body moving. Early morning walks, horse riding at sunset, or a late evening stroll with my dog is some of my favourite things to do right now. It’s amazing how different exercising outside feels, when it’s not 40+ degrees and 100 per cent humidity! At night of course you really can’t beat rooftop dining. There’s something quite magical about spending your evening under the stars. The food tastes better, the music sounds groovier, and we all seem to look a whole lot prettier. And I’m just so into that.

How To: Kick Start Your Exercise Routine

Making The Most of What Nature Has To Offer

Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…

and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...

Once people find out I’m a Personal Trainer I always get the question other than “Don’t look at my plate” “What is the best way to get into an exercise routine”? As everyone on this earth is different the best way is to come up with a list of things that suits you best to get you off that sofa. Start by making an appointment and schedule it into your diary just as you would if it were an appointment at the hairdressers, dentist or a bikini wax, because if you

don’t it will not happen. Write down the goals you want to achieve whether it be getting stronger, thinner or fatter then think about how you’re going to achieve them. Going to the gym may not be for you so try different things like Horse Riding, swimming, joining a running club or taking up a new sport like Netball, Taekwondo or Football. Try different things until you find something that you really like and stick with it. Don’t forget your goals; once you’ve achieved them set yourself new ones to keep you motivated. If you feel afraid of starting on your own bring a friend with you or call a Personal Trainer to help guide you and achieve those goals and set new ones. The start of anything new can always be a little bit scary but remember, every person who is good at something was also a beginner once, so keep at it. It’s getting breezier in Bahrain. The weather is starting to cool ever so slightly every day. The evenings possess a magical feel to them making any kind of outdoor activity all the more enticing. This may be a good time to make the most of what nature we have access to in Bahrain. Being outdoors has several health benefits as I’m sure many of us know. Just being outside in the sun means that we’ll get an excellent source of vitamin D which in turn means that our immune system will be stronger. We’re more likely to avoid getting osteoporosis, cancer and Alzheimer’s to mention only a few. Being on the computer and constant

exposure to artificial light has been found to create a myriad of eye related issues. Being outdoors and getting at least two hours of sunlight a day has shown to decrease your chances of getting eye issues like near sightedness in the future. Exposure to sunlight has also shown to improve the function of our circadian rhythm, which means that we can get a better night’s sleep. The journal of alternative and complementary medicine has stated that having the bare soles of our feet touch earth has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Just by walking outdoors with your feet in the grass or squishing your toes in the sand, you can improve your mood and health. For me there is no better place to practice being present than when you are outdoors and you become aware of the breeze on your skin. Three reasons FOR moving What do you hope to achieve to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, for The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa... Hotel & Spa? I did not think twice. First because The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa has a stellar reputation. The second motivation was the challenge to take a well-established hotel and make sure it remains fresh and relevant for the years to come. We have the chance to work closely together.
